Sue:

How many TV channels have you got? About thirty, I think. We’ve got cable TV. So do we, but we’ve only got fifteen channels. My dad says it’s enough, because he thinks we watch too much TV in our family. Really? My mum thinks so too! She calls me a couch potato and she says I have to do my homework first before I can watch any TV. Wow, your mum sounds really strict! What kind of programmes do you usually watch? I watch soap operas and I really like Friends ... it’s my favourite! Why is that? I think it’s funny and I like the characters in it. What’s it about? Oh, it’s about some boys and girls who live together in New York and they’ve got all sorts of problems. When is it on? Every weekday at eight o’clock. Do you watch soaps too? No, I don’t. I like reality shows like Big Brother because they’re about real people and not phony characters. One of my favourite shows was Forever Eden – did you see it? Yes, parts of it. Who was your favourite person? I liked Adam. He was a really nice guy and I’m sorry he didn’t win. Do you have any favourite series? Yeah, my father and I have watched all episodes of 24 ... You know the series about agent Jack Bauer at CTU and the American president. Of course! That’s the best series of them all! phony opdigtede

How many TV channels have you got? What kind of programmes do you watch? Why is that? What’s it about? When is it on? Who is your favourite person?

Wow! 2 Your own TV habits Work with a friend. Interview each other about what TV programmes you like to watch. Try to use some of the questions and phrases that Roy and Sue use in the dialogue. Record your interviews on video or on your cassette tape in My Collection.

Score table 1-4 points No, you’re ok. 5-7 points Well, you have some bad habits that you need to change. 8-10 points Yes, you’re definitely a couch potato! You’ve got problems. Life in front of the TV is not the real world.

3 Are you a couch potato? Have a friend ask you the questions. You answer the questions and get 1 point for each “yes”.

1. Do you watch TV in your pyjamas before you go to school? 2. Do you lie down on a sofa or a bed when you watch TV? 3. Do you ever spend the whole day on the couch watching TV when you aren’t sick? 4. Do you often eat dinner and watch TV at the same time? 5. Have you got more than five programmes a week that you feel you must watch? 6. Do you watch a lot of sports programmes and never exercise yourself? 7. Do you often fall asleep when you watch TV? 8. Do you usually eat crisps or popcorn when you watch a film on TV? 9. You’re watching your favourite TV programme and your friend comes for a visit. Do you tell your friend that you have to watch the end before you can talk to him or her? 10. You’re watching TV and want to phone a friend, but you don’t know the phone number. Do you phone information to get the number instead of getting up from the couch and look it up on the Internet?

Now add your score. Look at the score table and find out if you are a couch potato.

LET’S DISCUSS IT!

4 Agree or disagree! Work in a group and take turns reading the statements. Do you agree or disagree? Why? / Why not? What do the other people in your group think?

Why?/ Why not?

I always watch the news. There is too much sport on TV. Soap operas are boring. Children should only watch TV one hour a day. All films should be dubbed into Danish. There are not enough music channels on TV. I love reality shows! Watching too much TV is bad for your health. There should be more cartoons on TV.
