CANINE DESIGN: A CASE STUDY

DESIGN GOES TO THE DOGS A fast growing company in the pet pharmaceutical industry, Vetsource needed a larger office to accommodate current employees while allowing for future expansion.

But they also wanted a workplace for their four-legged support staff.

CREATIVITY UNLEASHED Though dogs are eager to please and incredibly adaptable, designing a workplace for them is more challenging than one might think. The LRS design team had to balance the programming requirements of the client with the particular needs of their furry friends. Open offices are ideal for collaboration and workflow, but they present challenges for dogs, who might like to explore.

Delicate furniture and soft wood flooring may look beautiful, but it can’t endure a barrage of puppy paws. Casters on furniture make it easier to move around, but can catch on tails and leashes. By studying their own pets and unleashing creativity, LRS designers implemented a variety of unique solutions for Vetsource’s Headquarters.

A pet playroom also functions as a collaborative workspace for informal meetings.

Most of the chairs do not include casters, which could catch on puppy tails or paws.

DAYLIGHTING

Great for animals and humans, natural lighting makes it easier to see in dark offices, preventing unexpected spooks and giving dogs easy entertainment.

In high traffic areas, concrete floors prevent wear and tear from dog claws and “ruff� housing.

These pull out gates help create a contained area for dogs to relax while their owners work.
