FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT'S DESK

D

ear Cub Community,

In the early days of the COVID-19 stayat- home order that ultimately closed schools for the remainder of the academic year, I messaged our community and said, “Strong families make great schools. The days and weeks ahead are unpredictable, but together we will be fine. If we stay focused on helping and supporting each other, we will be stronger and better than ever. There is nothing we can’t accomplish together.” As a member of the Cub community for over 16 years, I knew that we would rise to this historic and unprecedented occasion! The ULS transition to virtual instruction and learning was immediate. Our faculty, students and parents joined forces, often quite creatively, and ensured that our academic endeavors continued with the rigor and relevance to which our students are accustomed. Equally as important, we proved that no amount of social distancing could keep us apart in spirit. In this issue of Cub Roar, you will read about the many ways our community embraced one another over the past several months and faced this unforeseen challenge with Cub determination and total effort.

6

As we reflect on the past months and look forward to the future, let us celebrate how members of our Cub family have stepped up in uncertain times to make a fundamental difference. To frontline workers,

cub roar | spring/summer 2020

we cannot thank you enough. To those who stepped in to protect the front line workers, like parent and LSU Medical Physics Program Director Wayne Newhauser who began the University’s gown project to address shortages of PPE and alumnus Dane Lejeune ’01, senior vice president of Owen Biosciences Inc., whose company transitioned to producing hand sanitizer to address the shortages of hygiene/cleaning supplies, we offer you a heartfelt thanks as well. Amidst the COVID-19 crisis, our nation has been shaken by the realities of racism. Let us move forward with courage in critical discussions based on listening and learning and actions that bring forth social justice and solutions to racism in America. Please join in taking necessary steps to advance progress on diversity and inclusion efforts that benefit all of our students. I encourage you to visit the ULS website at uhigh.lsu.edu to read the leadership team’s message of hope and reflection and our pledge of definitive change. In anticipation of the 2020-21 school year, the administrative team is preparing for a number of possibilities with our community’s health and wellbeing as the first priority. Also, full consideration of maintaining a comprehensive ULS experience in all areas of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Athletics, & Math) is critical. No matter what our immediate future holds, I stand by my prior message - “I consider it a blessing and a privilege to be a part of this journey, and I look forward to the challenges we will overcome and the victories we will celebrate – TOGETHER.” Stay well and best,

Amy Barham Westbrook, Ph.D. Interim Superintendent University Laboratory School

ULS FOUNDATION | COMMUNITY MESSAGE

C

ub Family,

Your support and care for each other and our school these past few months has blown me away but not at all surprised me. Each day has brought stories of Cubs helping, encouraging, and giving what was needed to keep our community strong and thriving. The ULS Foundation is facing 2020 with the same level of focus and commitment that we always strive for on behalf of every Cub. Inside this issue of the Cub Roar, you will find how we pivoted our efforts to celebrate the Class of 2020. Likewise, we missed the opportunity to welcome our grandparents to campus and are eagerly looking forward to Grandparents Day 2021. We are fortunate and grateful for the love that permeates our school, and this year has proven that it extends far beyond our buildings. Our volunteers pulled together to ensure that milestones like faculty retirements and valued programs like Teacher Appreciation Week continued with a creative spin that kept everyone safe and healthy. Now, as we all look toward next school year, the ULS Foundation is reflecting upon the generous service and support of our Board members whose terms are ending. The philanthropic work that this Board drives is a powerful resource for ensuring that our school motto of “Total effort in every endeavor” describes every aspect of the

well-rounded education we provide in and out of the classroom. As you anticipate your family’s next chapter with ULS, I hope you feel pride and enthusiasm. I want to thank our families for your generous spirit, selfless service, and words of encouragement. If you have not yet become involved as a donor or volunteer, I hope you will consider doing so. Together, we will make the 2020-21 school year our brightest yet.

NYT Best-Selling Author Surprises History Students with Class Zoom Bomb

New York Times best-selling author and historian Alex Kershaw was scheduled to speak about his latest book, The First Wave: The D-Day Warriors Who Led the Way to Victory in World War II, at ULS in March to both students and the public as part of the LSU College of Human Sciences & Education Quality of Life Lecture Series. Unfortunately, along with most events throughout the world this spring, that event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students in Instructor Ryan Empson’s History of the Americas II course had been provided a copy of Kershaw’s book with annual appeal funding through the ULS Foundation and after reading it, had been looking forward to discussions with the writer. Technology to the rescue! Empson and Kershaw coordinated a surprise Zoom class visit last month that went so well, Kershaw has offered to return via Zoom for a class visit again next year. Kershaw can be seen on the fourth row, fourth from the left. Empson is pictured on the first row, second window. Of the visit, Empson said, “Students these days are incredibly interested in World War II. The reading of The First Wave, in conjunction with our World War II unit, really helped bring

the history to life and made the lesson much more engaging with the students. Diving into the stories or heroism and self-sacrifice in Mr. Kershaw’s book was a fresh new way of teaching one of the most important days in world history: the D-Day landings in Normandy. When the author visit had to be cancelled, my seniors were crushed. They have missed out on so much these last few months because of COVID-19, I didn’t want them to miss out on

visiting with Mr. Kershaw, too. The students were shocked at first but then dove in asking some great questions. They were extremely curious about how he conducted his research, how he chose what topics to write about, where did his inspiration to become a historian come from. Through all of these questions, Mr. Kershaw was able to talk about The First Wave and included neat side stories of WWII veterans that he has spoken with about this book and others.”

Having finished high school at the young age of 16, Horton set out to reach her dream of one day becoming an astronaut. But after an ROTC physical, she learned that she had a genetic disorder resulting in hearing impairment in the ranges of human speech. Although the devastating news meant she could never be an astronaut, Horton was still determined in some way to one day work for NASA. Initially, her life took a different path. She got married, became a mom of three and experienced a series of ups and downs, including a divorce. All the while, her aspirations of participating in space exploration in some way continued to flicker. Finally, at age 27, she received her first pair of hearing aids, enrolled at LSU and never looked back. Horton currently serves as the Space Launch System quality engineer in the NASA Residential Management Office at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans She and her team are an integral

the ultimate goal of landing the first woman and next man on the Moon by 2024. Horton was elected president of the National Society of Black Physicists in 2016. She is the second woman to hold the office. She served as a member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Women in Physics Working Group. In 2019, she was named a fellow in the NSBP - the highest honor that can be bestowed on a member. Horton was an invited speaker for the first International Women and Girls Day at the United Nations and has traveled internationally to speak in South Africa, Brazil, South Korea, Canada, Mexico and the Virgin Islands and serves as a mentor to young people throughout the world interested in STEM careers. In addition to her work at NASA, Horton has authored three children’s books: “Dr. H Explores the Universe,” “Dr. H and Her Friends” and “Dr. H Explores the ABCs. Dr. Horton’s visit was sponsored

by funds raised from the ULSF Annual Appeal.

ULS high school history students had an extraordinary experience this spring by connecting with World War II veterans on a basic human level through the National WWII Museum’s Operation Footlocker program. The traveling trunk that made its way to ULS included a variety of actual artifacts from World War II, including a ration book, V-mail letters, dog tags, sand from the beaches of Normandy and Iwo Jima, wartime magazines and even a high school yearbook from the early 1940s. Instructor Beth Shoenberger coordinated the Footlocker visit with funding from the ULS Foundation. “The high school yearbook was immediately relatable because it conveyed the point that many of these soldiers were just about the same age as our students. Other items like the letters and dog tags, which included the name of the owner, also brought the overarching history of World War II down to a personal level,” Shoenberger said. “Thanks to generous donations to the ULSF Annual Appeal, our students are able to engage in hands-on experiences, like this one, that create a much deeper understanding of and appreciation for subject matter being taught in the classroom.”

Operation Footlocker Provides Personal Perspective on WWII for High School History Students

Arts education provides opportunities for children to develop skills in written and oral expression, teamwork and critical thinking. In fact, studies show that school children exposed to the arts are often more proficient in reading, writing and math. At ULS, the arts are a core element of the academic curriculum. Support of the ULS Foundation’s Annual Appeal ensures that on a daily basis, students may continue to engage with and develop an understanding of both visual and performing arts through painting, sculpture and mixed-media projects, writing and vocal and instrumental music.

More than $20,000 has been dedicated to new instruments for K-12 music and secondary band.

The Ceramics program has received more than $6,000 for clay and other materials.

$10,000 in funding was provided for transportation to the Cub Pride Band attending a recording workshop in Disney.

A graduate assistant music accompanist was funded ($15,000) for the Music Program.

Middle school program received $2,400 for iPads and iPencils to be used in teaching digital graphics and photography techniques.

Nearly $30,000 has been dedicated for a state of the art, portable, fullstage acoustical shell to be installed in the auditorium this fall.

Cub Club Hosts Reimagined

Teacher Appreciation Week Cub Club, the ULS parent organization, hosts a grand week for teacher appreciation at the end of every school year. But in April, it became evident that teachers and students would not be together to celebrate the occasion this spring. Right away, the Cub Club Teacher Appreciation Week (TAW) Committee got to work to reimagine a

socially distanced celebration. Together with U-High family owned restaurants who regularly support the school through fundraising dinners, a plan was enacted to provide faculty and staff meals to go from Bistro Byronz, Red Zeppelin and Walk-On’s on Burbank. Throughout the week, students and families also sent virtual flowers and notes of appreciation

to instructors and staff members via email. The TAW Committee concluded the week with a video of recognition and gratitude that included photos of each faculty and staff member along with their families and students from every grade, including graduating seniors, who shared special messages.

I can’t thank you enough for pulling off such a beautiful celebration during this insane time. I am such a proud Cub Alum and feel so honored to participate in the level of education the students get at U-High. Continuing to be part of the Cub Family means everything. Thank you all for making us feel so special! The Walk-Ons staff were standing out in the rain delivering meals yesterday! Everything was delicious and so appreciated. CUB CLUB PRESENTS PARENT SYMPOSIUM Cub Club hosted a parent symposium, “Considerations for Improving and Enhancing Focus, Attention, Learning and Behavior,” in early March. Speech-Language Pathologist and co-owner of Dynamic Therapy Specialists Vicky Roy, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, spoke to parents about how to help their children think and behave in a more organized way. Dr. Roy highlighted a number of factors to consider when a child is struggling with focus and attention and/or presenting as a struggling learner ranging from the quality of a child’s sleep to their ability to maintain good body posture and relationship with gravity in learning situations. Participants were provided with quick checks to consider and community resources available to help them explore an in-depth look at their child’s challenges. Dr. Roy’s presentation was offered again to ULS parents during the COVID-19 Pandemic via Zoom on May 19. To request a recording of that presentation, parents may email Dr. Roy at info@dtsbr.com. ULS parent Anne Thomas attended Dr. Roy’s presentation and encourages others to watch it as well. “Vicky’s

presentation was relatable to parents of all children… I found the material relevant for understanding what drives my children’s ability to focus and assisting with prioritizing the task at hand, whether it be schoolwork, athletics or chores. During the past two months of online school, parents have been afforded a bird’s eye view of their child’s strengths and weaknesses. Vicky’s expertise is especially valuable in this new light.”

We Don’t Keep the Pace.

We Set It!

Meeting top priorities means enhancing meaningful spaces. Our thriving Cub community has outgrown the Cub Complex’s facilities, a central hub for students, their families and alumni. An expanded homeside concessions and restroom building, pavilion and courtyard celebrating athletic championships will improve our growing Cub community’s experience cheering on our student athletes. Enhanced amenities will address one of our top priorities—safety—while

CAMPUS PRIDE helping our athletic directors effectively plan and coordinate athletic contests and manage crowds at sporting events. Improving safety features, increasing ease of accessibility and constructing a new sheltered area for visitors experiencing inclement weather will ensure we continue to provide the top-tier experiences for which ULS is known. Like you, we understand the importance of school spirit and camaraderie. First-class Cub Complex facilities are critical to fostering our Cubs’ sense of pride in their school, their classmates, teammates and themselves. For more information on how you can advance your family legacy and provide meaningful experiences for the entire Cub Community, please contact Mila Sexton, CFRE, senior director of development, at 225-578-3148 or msexton@lsu.edu.

Leave Meeting

In response to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards issued a stay at home order, which included the closing of K-12 schools state wide on March 15, 2020. In an unprecedented one-day pivot, University Laboratory School students and teachers shifted from classroom instruction to online teaching and learning. Thanks to generous donations to the ULS Foundation Annual Appeal, ULS was immediately able to loan nearly 90 laptops that had been purchased during the past few years to close the gap for those in need and to ensure every student could continue daily instruction and connection. Using Google Classroom and their creative talents, faculty quickly discovered new and inventive ways to instruct and, along with students, manage assignments from a distance. Through zoom discussions, google meets and a variety of newly introduced platforms, secondary students and teachers found themselves fast forwarding into new methods of teaching and learning, relying more than ever before on collaboration and interaction with material, information and data. Newly introduced mathematical concepts were reinforced through projects such as a parabola selfie assignment. Middle school students applied knowledge learned of the U.S. Constitution and researched current news stories in social studies class to create an argument for or against COVID-19 executive orders violating citizen rights. At-home science experiments and projects were carefully recorded and submitted to instructors via video or photographs, and English classes became a safe haven of expression as instructors skillfully wove news of the day into writing assignments and discussions. The remote daily lessons of elementary students were enhanced by instructors using platforms like Facebook to offer daily story time at Mrs. P’s Remote Library, adventures with Babcock’s Backyard Safari, online fun during Technology Time with Mrs. Dornier and more than a few rowdy jam sessions in Ms. Fowler’s Music Room. Elementary enrichment and P.E. instructors also created weekly virtual bingo

University Laboratory School is First Public School in Louisiana to Achieve STEM Certification University Laboratory School is the first public school in the state of Louisiana to earn STEM certification.

The school’s two-year STEM certification journey began in the fall of 2018. On March 12, 2020, Cognia (formerly AdvancEd) representatives completed a two-day site visit hosted by the ULS Foundation, the final step in the process, and awarded ULS with full STEM certification. The acronym STEM represents the subject areas of science, technology, engineering and math; but at ULS, student

investigations of scientific concepts also include inquiry and problem-based learning in the creative process (the Arts) and opportunities for social, physical and leadership growth and development through extracurricular Activities and Athletics, adding an “A” to the acronym.

High School Instructor Aimee Welch-James and Elementary Instructor Rebecca Svensson were co-coordinators of ULS STEM certification efforts. “STEM certification was the end goal, but the journey to

persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. The Class of 2020 entered their freshman year during the Great Flood of 2016 and graduated in the middle of a worldwide pandemic and persevered through it all! From academics to athletics and the arts, this year’s seniors took nothing for granted and lived the school motto “Total effort in every endeavor.” Together, they learned to rise above uncertain times and unusual circumstances with grace and strength, and the result is an impressive tally of collective achievements and accolades listed on the following pages. To the Class of 2020, thank you for being a reminder that as a Cub community, we are stronger together and remember – Once a Cub, Always a Cub! A special project funded by ULSF provided each member of the Class of 2020 with a yard sign to celebrate their upcoming graduation. Thank you to senior parent Chanler Holden Mittendorf for designing the signs.

Full STEAM Ahead

[continued from page 19] STEM certification is where the real transformation took place. Throughout the process, our teachers worked very hard to see their content through the STEAM lens resulting in more authentic, meaningful, and creative ways to engage their students in learning,” said WelchJames. Svensson added that because “inquirybased and interdisciplinary learning have always played a central role in our instruction,” incorporating the engineering design process on which STEM is based into the school’s elementary and secondary curriculums was a natural next step.

I cherish this memory of me and my grandfather. U-High has been a tradition in my family for 4 generations and a solid foundation academically, socially and professionally. I’m proud to be U-High alumni! #UHighGivingDay

“As a result, we are already seeing that our students are becoming even better at collaborating and problem solving,” noted Welch-James. “Overall, the journey to STEM certification enhanced our school’s proficiency to prepare our students for the ever-changing world.” In addition to STEM certification, ULS is nationally recognized as a Blue Ribbon School and earned renewed AdvancEd accreditation in 2017.
