Director’s Notes

Drawing on his personal history and the poem by the same name by Howard Starks, Tracy Letts set out to write the next great American family drama in the tradition of Arthur Miller, Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams. Letts modernizes certain elements by interlacing prescription pill addiction with alcoholism and divorce. But the classic elements of family members struggling to survive without destroying each other remain. Isolated on the Oklahoma plains, the Westons are forced to deal with the question of how we become who we are by unraveling their past, only to learn that we can never escape it. I am grateful to have explored this story and these characters with producer Lloyd Bittinger, co-stage managers Joan Lada and Sherry Clarkeand the talented designers, dedicated crew and courageous actors.

SHOW SYNOPSIS

When the family patriarch vanishes, the Westons return to rural Oklahoma to care for their afflicted, manipulative mother, Violet. Armed with prescription drugs and paranoid mood swings, Violet reigns over the home as family secrets unfold. This powerful family drama by Tracy Letts won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best New Play.

Volunteers are an important aspect of LTA. There are many opportunities to be a part of LTA with a variety of events and times! All are welcome to participate regardless of experience.

LTA is one of the oldest community theatres in the Washington D.C. area thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. A successful stage production requires many volunteers working behind the scenes before and during the run of the show. Everyone performing in and nearly everyone you see working on an LTA show is a volunteer.

As a volunteer community theatre group, LTA welcomes anyone interested in becoming involved. There are lots of opportunities at LTA, for all experience levels! So, come play with us.

Meet the Cast

Carlotta Capuano (Ivy Weston) is thrilled to be making her LTA debut. Some of her favorite past performances include In the Heights (ASGT), The City of Conversation (CPA)and Cabaret (KAT).Carlotta is a student at the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. She has an A.F.A. in dance and a B.S. in business administration. When she’s not working in theater, she serves as a library associate and early literacy specialist at the Crofton Community Library. Enjoy the show!

Paul Donahoe (Sheriff Deon Gilbeau) has performed at LTA as the Equerry in The Audience and Bob Ewell in To Kill a Mockingbird.He was recently seen as the Male Greek Chorus in How I Learned to Drive (DS). Other credits include Wilhelm Furtwangler in Taking Sides (PCP), for which he received a WATCH nomination, and as the Detective in A Dream Within a Dream: Madness (Through the 4th Wall) at the Torpedo Factory. Paul received an M.F.A. in acting from Ohio University.

Michael Fisher (Bill Fordham) was last seen on the LTA stage in Nude with Violin and Leading Ladies. Previous productions include Angel Street (GAC and OTC), Any GivenMonday (DS), Blithe Spirit (PTC), Expecting Isabel (SSS), RoughCrossing (RLT), Kind Lady (CCP), Dearly Departed (ACCT), All My Sons (PCP) and Judgment at Nuremburg (SCT). He has also been seen on Investigation Discovery Channel productions of Evil Stepmothers, Evil Kin and Nightmare Next Door, among others.

Tom Flatt (Charlie Aiken) happily returns to LTA, where he appeared in Laughing Stock, Cabaret, Proposals, Last Night of Ballyhoo and The Sisters Rosensweig. Other local favorites include Shining City (PCP); Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Weir, Accomplice, Love! Valour! Compassion! and Caroline, or Change (ESP, now NextStop Theatre Company); Avenue Q, Take Me Out and Reefer Madness (DS); A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Rumors (MCP); and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Curtains (RCP). To Shani, your love makes everything possible.

Katarina Frustaci (Johnna Monevata) is honored to be cast in her first LTA show. She grew up dancing Russian ballet with the Virginia Ballet Company and later joined Fusion Dance Team at Virginia Tech, where she graduated in May 2017. She loves the theater and is very excited to be a part of this amazing production. Katarina would like to thank her parents, boyfriend and close family and friends for their constant support.

Elizabeth Keith (Karen Weston) returns to the LTA stage and is honored to work with this talented cast and crew! Previous LTA roles include Proof (WATCH Award), The 39 Steps, Widdershins, Nude with Violin, A Christmas Carol and Picnic. Other area theater credits include 19 and A Dream Within a Dream: Madness (both at Through the 4th Wall), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Shakespeare Opera Theatre), Almost, Maine (PPF), The Glass Mendacity (Ruby Griffith Award) (PPF), The Great Gatsby (RLT), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (RLT) and An Inspector Calls (WATCH Award) (DS).

Eric Kennedy (Steve Heidebrecht) always knew his first LTA show would occur after he was no longer an Alexandria resident. Preferring to play nice, he regrets his contributions to the family dysfunction in tonight’s performance. Previous credits include John Worthing in The Importance of Being Earnest (CFTC), Geoffrey in The Lion in Winter (TAP), Guido Contini in Nine (TAP) (WATCH Award nominee) and Billy Flynn in Chicago (SMP). He thanks Susan for having the courage to tackle challenging theater, and Greg for his continued support.

Fred C. Lash (Beverly Weston) is extremely pleased to be returning to the LTA stage, this being his ninth show at his favorite theater. Between The Fantasticks and West Side Story (with Susan), he has performed in more than 50 productions with numerous community theaters in Northern Virginia. Often nominated for acting awards in various categories throughout the past 30 years, Fred truly thrives on his thespian experiences and considers himself very fortunate to have shared 50 years of marriage with his life partner, Donna.

Nicky McDonnell (Barbara Fordham) received her B.F.A. in acting from Emerson College in Boston. She has worked and toured in theater in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, DC and Europe. Favorite roles include Elizabeth II in The Audience, Diana in Next to Normal (WATCH nominee best actress), Maria Callas in Master Class (2003 WATCH Award best actress), Rose in Gypsy, Jane in Black Hole (WATCH nominee) and Big and Little Edie in Grey Gardens at LTA. In real life she is a top-producing realtor at TTR Sotheby’s International Realty. She lives with her much-loved and patient husband, Stephen, and two equally adored and patient boys, Joe and Dean. A huge thank you always to the cast and crew of LTA for this great opportunity to participate in August: Osage County.

Camille Neumann (Jean Fordham) is super excited to be performing in her second production with LTA, having previously appeared as Josie in Anne of Green Gables. Other recent credits include performances in the ensemble for Sweeney Todd (TAP), as Betty in As Is and as Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She thanks her mom and dad for being so supportive of her in her theatrical endeavors and Susan Devine, the director, for giving her this opportunity to grow as an actress.

Gayle Nichols-Grimes (Mattie Fae Aiken) is excited to be back at LTA with this wonderful show. She has received five WATCH nominations as Thelma/Mamma in ’Night, Mother (DS), as Vernadette in Dixie Swim Club (PCP), as Ann/Debra/Mom/Mrs. Marcangelo in Jeffrey (DS), as Dr. Gertrude Ladenbuger in 33 Variations (RCP) and as Mattie Fae Aiken in August: Osage County (RCP). Recent shows include How I Learned to Drive (DS); Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (RCP); and The Diary of Anne Frank (PWLT). She won the 2017 NVTA Best Actress Award for LTA’s A Fine Death. She has performed in numerous shows with NST, LTA, PCP, DS, RCP, PP and TAP. To Leta and Mark: May God always bless you—you are missed every day.

Diane Sams (Violet Weston) is delighted to be onstage for LTA again with such a terrific cast and crew and to be working with Susan Devine after doing Eleanor in The Lion in Winter (TAP). Other favorite performances include Carla in Comic Potential (PCP), Chris in Calendar Girls (MCP), Kate in The Cover of Life (BCT) and Hercule Poirot in Black Coffee (BCT). To Bob Sams: Love and appreciation for putting up with all the craziness for so many weeks.

Greg Wilczynski (Little Charles Aiken) is a recent transplant from Pennsylvania and is thrilled to be making his debut at LTA. Greg was last seen as Tick/Mitzi in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (KAT). Favorite past roles includeLefouin Beauty and the Beast, John Hinckley in Assassins and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Besides loving to perform, during his off time he enjoys being a nurse and exploring his new surroundings in the DMV. All my love to my family and friends.

Meet the Crew (in

alphabetical order)

Beverley Benda (Costume Design), a professional singer by trade, recently retired from the United States Army Band (“Pershing’s Own”) as a vocalist and Public Affairs Office NCOIC. She has appeared in a variety of musicals, including Brigadoon, The Pirates of Penzance, My Fair Lady, The Music Man, Hollywood Pinafore, A Grand Night for Singing and the first revival of Call Me Mister. A private voice teacherand vocal coach, she teaches in the LTA education program. In her spare time, she works for LTA in Artistic Support and Front of House and is an award-winning costumer. Her costumes have appeared in shows such as The Fantasticks, Bug, Dirty Blonde, The Secret Garden and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Lloyd Bittinger (Producer) has been an active LTA member for the past 23 years, serving in numerous capacities, including Governor for Front of House and President. He has been the producer or co-producer for A Christmas Carol three times in the past. He regularly works on the light crew (he loves running the follow spot) and in the box office and front-of-house crew. He is very pleased to be working with such a talented cast and crew and especially with our excellent director, Susan Devine.

Margaret Chapman (Properties Design) is pleased to be designing properties for her second production with LTA after designing props for the spring 2018 production of Harvey. For the past few years, she has been designing props and producing shows for St. Mark’s Players and Fat and Greasy Citizens Brigade, including Sister Act: The Musical, Evita and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). Margaret also serves as the President of the SMP Board of Directors and is currently producing The Philadelphia Story, which opens in October.

Sherry Clarke (Co-Stage Manager) first “dabbled in the arts” with the typical neighborhood plays as a child. Fast forwarding to her late teens/early 20s, she was firmly ensconced in high school/college plays and musicals and began a very gratifying 13-year career as a vocalist based out of Seattle, traveling north to Alaska (quite literally) and south along the western coastline. She settled in Alexandria, where she discovered a new home in which to explore her theatrical roots by way of the wonderful community theaters in the area. Sherry is very pleased to be working under the creative direction of Susan Devine, along with the gifted cast and crew of August: Osage County.

Franklin Coleman (Lighting Design) has been nominated for WATCH Outstanding Lighting Design nine times and won it four, including for Hairspray at LTA. He has been nominated for the Patty Dillaber Mickley award 11 times and won it five, most recently for Proof. This is his 129th lighting design overall and his 21st at LTA, where most recently he lit West Side Story. His most recent lighting design was for Enchanted April (ACCT). Thanks to Susan, and to Micheal and all of the lighting crew.

Susan Devine (Director) is thrilled to be back home at LTA, where she previously directed West Side Story, Proof (WATCH nomination) and Chicago (WATCH award). Other credits include The Lion in Winter and A Chorus Line (WATCH nomination) at TAP, The Clean House at ESP and The Fantasticks at VCT. With love to Emma and Laura.

Charles Dragonette (Set Decoration) is delighted to be back at LTA with a set where nothing moves! He previously decorated LTA’s acclaimed Anne of Green Gables and Key for Two and is still up to his ears in wisteria from ACCT’s Enchanted April. Other theater activity includes stage managing (LTA, PCP, ACCT, DS), set design, lighting and props, with occasional accidental acting gigs thrown in.

Laura Fargotstein (Assistant to the Director/Assistant Properties Design) is delighted to work again with Susan. She worked with Susan most recently as assistant stage manager for The Lion in Winter. Laura produced Be My Baby and Proposals (VTC) and choreographed shows including The Thurber Carnival, The Fantasticks and Nunsense (VTC), TheSound of Music (Alden Theatre), Anything Goes (GTU), Guys and Dolls, ThePajama Game and Hello, Dolly! (TSP). She directed Mere Mortals (VTC)and Hero Worship for LTA’s One Act Play Competition.

Lorenna Hess (Assistant to the Director) is excited to be working with LTA for the first time. A graduate of George Mason University with a B.S. in creative communications, she has written two plays and directed adult and children’s theater in Fairfax and Virginia Beach. Onstage, she has played Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, Crystal Allen in The Women, and her favorite role: May in Fool for Love (NVCC).

Joan A.S. Lada (Co-Stage Manager) is happy to return to LTA and join Sherry Clarke as a member of the SM team. Steve Lada (Stage Combat Choreography) is a founding member of the Noble Blades stage combat troupe, and he has performed at the Maryland Renaissance Festival and in the Washington Opera’s productions of Tristan and Isolde and Julius Caesar. His stage combat has been honored with the WATCH Award for Outstanding Achievement in Combat Choreography for Richard III, Veronica’s Room, Romeo and Juliet, The Miracle Worker and Kiss Me, Kate. As always, he thanks the love of his life for getting him started on this incredible journey.

Matt Liptak (Photographer) has a degree in photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. He photographs local theater, head shots, portraits, products and events in and around the DMV. Micheal J. O’Connor (Master Electrician) works as master electrician at many local community theaters. He enjoys working with Franklin Coleman (lighting designer) along with the very talented tech crew at LTA. Micheal can often be found backstage or in the tech booth, always in the dark.

Dan Remmers (Set Design/Set Construction) is pleased to be working with such a great cast and crew. Dan’s previous set designs include The Nance and West Side Story at LTA and TheLion in Winter at TAP. Best of luck to the first bird to leave the nest.

Margaret Snow (Wardrobe Coordinator) likes managing a challenging wardrobe operation, and the vices and virtues of the manipulating characters of August: Osage County fill the bill nicely with a costuming plot progressing from good intentions to messy irrationality. Working with this show’s theme, cast and crew is perfect preparation for exercising appropriate behavior in the aftermath of attempting to cheer her sanctified Bal’mer Oily Boids to victory in this season.

Mary Speed (Set Painting) is a two-time WATCH Award winner for her scenic painting work on The Most Happy Fella (TAP 2014) and on Red (ESP 2013). She has also recently painted at NextStop for Amour (2018) and for Sweeney Todd (TAP 2018). Mary has been scenic painting in the Washington area since 2004.

Alan Wray (Sound Design) is excited to be working on this production with such a talented director and crew. Alan has designed sound for various LTA productions as well as for other theaters. He most recently co-designed sound for Jesus Christ Superstar Additionally for LTA he designed Ragtime, Picnic (WATCH nomination), Rabbit Hole, Harvey and the chilling Widdershins (LTA Award). Alan designed sound for TAP’s She Loves Me and The Seagull (WATCH nomination) and for DS’ Spring Awakening and The Boys in the Band(WATCH nomination). Occasionally he can be seen producing shows— his last co-production was Anne of Green Gables with Robert Kraus.

Russell Wyland (Rigging) is delighted to be rigging his first show at LTA…since The Nance and Jesus Christ Superstar. While some believe Russ spends all of his free time at LTA, he is also an active enthusiast of opera and hockey and a scholar of 19th-century British literature. Russell is the current President of LTA and recently co-produced The Audience.

Welcome to the “Shakespeare Garden” in The Little Theatre of Alexandria Courtyard! This beautiful garden was made possible with donations from LTA members and supporters who purchased bricks during the LTA Council’s fund-raising campaign February-April of 2017. We have planted floral species that figured prominently in the Bard’s writings. We invite you to check out our courtyard during intermission and see how many you can identify!

The Council of The Little Theatre of Alexandria, organized in 1961, is a dedicated group of about 80 members that supports the theatre with special contributions. While our “Shakespeare Garden” is our most massive accomplishment so far, our past contributions included: scholarships for high school students, a new range, draperies and ice maker for the Council Green Room, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for sponsored theatre seats, a computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements, including exterior defibrillators (AEDs) for safety. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $215,000. The Council conducts three business/social meetings per year, and decorates the theatre for the winter holidays. We are pleased to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and proud to support one of the best community theatres in America today!
