Director’s Notes
I came to the story of Grey Gardens in the 1980s when I attended a Halloween party where a partygoer was dressed as Little Edie. Here was this person with a strangely constructed accent and an a la carte wardrobe holding court with a magnifying glass and a can of cat food, asking other partygoers if it was paté. Who was this person, Little Edie? I eventually found the Maysles documentary about Grey Gardens, and I was taken in. What a sad and heartfelt story about Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edith Bouvier Beale.
Fast forward 30 years and this story has been made into a musical, and I get a chance to stage that musical at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. What a gift! I have the chance to tell this story of the two Edies, relations of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who unknowingly created a scandal in the 1970s by living in squalor at their dilapidated Hamptons estate known as Grey Gardens.
The musical takes the dialogue and situations in the documentary and builds a story that shows the lives of the two Edies from two distinct points in time: Act 1 is 1941 and Act 2 is 1973. It shows their social status from upper-crust society to their eventual lives as destitute eccentrics in a crumbling house. While the house shows the glory and decline of the pair, the story’s center focuses on the relationship of love and struggle between a mother and a daughter. Sad, happy, touching and brutal, this musical explores human nature and how our choices lead to who we are, what we become, and what we accept, especially as we grow older. At its heart, Grey Gardens is the story of love between a mother and daughter and how it came to be—albeit a strange one.
I’ve been blessed with a stellar production team and cast to present Grey Gardens for you. They have created a setting and characters for both periods of time, working hard to make sure that the humanity of the story shines through. The cast, nearly all of whom are creating two characters, has been a gem to work with: talented, focused and creative. Hats off especially to Nicky, Kate and Jennifer—three actresses playing the two Edies. It’s quite a journey to be in the room with your younger self and collaborate on creating characters who need to be part of each other in order to explore the question of how they became that way.
When you think of this show, think of mothers and daughters and the special bonds they have. No family functions perfectly—we all have a little bit of Big Edie and Little Edie in us or in our family.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
