It’s 1930s New York, a time when it was easy to “play gay,” but dangerous to be gay A headliner called “The Nance” was usually played by a straight man who would portray a campy homosexual in musical vaudeville parodies However, in this play, Chauncey Miles not only plays a gay man but is a homosexual himself. The Nance will take you into the wild world of burlesque and tell the backstage stor y of Chauncey and his fellow performers Winner of three Tony Awards

Dir ector ’s Notes
M a r y C h a se wa s i n sp ire d t o w ri t e H a r v e y d u ri ng Wo r l d Wa r I I . S h e described t he genesis of t he play in her final interview: “As I was leaving home every morning, a woman would emerge from the door of the apartment house and go to the bus to go downtown to work. …I didn’t know the woman, but I heard that she was a widow with one son who was … a bombardier in the Pacific. One day, I heard that her son was lost. Things like that were happening to so many people then, that wasn’t what jolted me so much as the fact that in a week or 10 days, I saw the woman leaving the apartment house, going a little more slowly, to catch the bus to go back to her old job. I couldn’t endure it. She began to haunt me. And the question began to haunt me. Could I ever think of anything to make that woman laugh again?” Chase t hought about t he woman day and night; she had a vision of a psychiatrist walking across her bedroom floor, pursued by a large white rabbit. Harvey was born.
Harvey, at t he center of Chase’s Harvey, is a pooka from Celtic myt hology, plopped into t he middle of an American family’s struggle to fit into society. C h a se , l i ke m a n y f irst - g e n e ra t i o n A m e ric a n s , w o v e

Elwood is rejecting (or maybe ignoring) t he world as most of us live it in favor of a much more pleasant place where people are genuinely interested in each ot her, and where t hey find happiness and satisfaction in simpler t hings.
