Director’s Notes
Shortly after I had been selected to direct The History Boys for LTA, a couple of friends of mine bought copies of the script and began to study it. “How are you going to educate the audience about the thousands of literary references in this play, the hundreds of authors quoted?” they asked. “I’m not,” I replied. They both looked at me like I had lost my mind. Like with Shakespeare, it’s the story that matters. If the actors convey that, the audience will enjoy the show. My goal is to introduce the audience to this brilliant Tony Award-winning show and to light a fire within them to discover its richness. The failure of today’s educators is that they try to teach Shakespeare rather than taking students to well-crafted productions and letting them discover the Bard.
An American audience only needs to know that towards the end of what equates to their senior year in high school, English students are given an exam –“A-Levels”–to determine their aptitude for higher education. Students who do well will apply to universities and will interview with college dons. This show is about a particularly bright group of students at a mediocre private school who test well, but who, according to the Headmaster, lack the polish to interview well. He hires a young teacher to train the boys how to interview and how to write interesting essays. That’s all you really need to know going in.
Finally, and in a different vein altogether, I want to get personal. At the end of the show, Hector, the well-liked English teacher, tells his students to “pass the parcel.” I’d like to thank the teachers in my life who did just that, especially Dorthie R. Kogelman, theatre teacher at Groveton High School in the 1970’s, who instilled in me the love of theatre and who inspired me to teach myself what I didn’t know. She “passed the parcel” to me, and I only hope to pass it to my students. On April 15, 2016, I suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank those who helped me to recover and to continue with my commitment, namely this show: the doctors, nurses, and therapists at INOVA Mt. Vernon Hospital Rehabilitation Center; the cast of The History Boys; Joanna Henry, Kath Dillaber; Mary Beth Smith-Toomey; Russ Wyland; my sister, April; my cousin, Gene; and always –MYKE.
With love and appreciation, Frank

alphabetical order)
Michael Dobbyn (Irwin) This is Michael’s second show at LTA. He is honored to be part of such a great team, both onstage and backstage. Trained at several theaters across the country, he insists that his greatest teacher has been his wife, Kathleen. She taught him to listen to others and to himself, but especially to her. She is probably somewhere in the audience right now, being beautiful.
Jack Esposito (Rudge) is excited to be in his first LTA show, though flattered to be still playing high school age. He previously played Astrov in Tufts University’s production of Uncle Vanya and Cassio in the Hong Kong Arts Centre’s Othello. He thanks his friends and family for supporting him in this show, especially his fiancée for all her love.
Kate Ives (Dorothy Lintott) lives in Springfield. Although she has done community theater for years, this is her first time with LTA, and she’s thrilled to be a part of this wonderful production. Previous roles include the Reverend Mother (The Sound of Music), Ouiser Boudreaux (Steel Magnolias), Mrs. Fezziwig (A Christmas Carol: The Musical) and the Narrator (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat).
Joshua Mutterperl (Posner) is a student at Mark Twain Middle School. He has previously played the Cat in the Hat in Seussical, Humpty Dumpty in Alice in Wonderland and Daniel Adler in the student-directed film One for One. This is his first community theater show, and he is so honored and excited to work with such a talented cast.
Noah Mutterperl (Timms) Regional: Romeo and Juliet (Hayfield Drama), American Idiot (Beyond the Page Theatre Company—West Potomac High School), Cabaret (Theatre Lab), Rent (Metro Youth Arts Theatre), Next to Normal (Beyond the Page Theatre Company—West Potomac High School), Footloose (Metropolitan School of the Arts), Marvin’s Room (Hayfield Drama), Brighton Beach Memoirs (Hayfield Drama).
Kevin Nejad (Akthar), age 21, is very excited about his first LTA production! Before being cast in The History Boys, Kevin worked with various local opera companies, such as Bel Cantanti Opera and Shakespeare Opera Theatre. Although he is an engineering major at NOVA, Kevin holds a deep love for acting, singing, playing the guitar, conspiracy theories, and underwater basket weaving. He hopes you enjoy the show.

Locally, Bobby performed as Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing with MVCCT. Bobby is also a member of his school’s swim, fencing, debate, and model U.N. teams.

His local credits include Shakespeare Theatre, Studio Theatre, Arcturus Theater, Capital Fringe Festival, and Source Festival, as well as TV, film, and industrials. His theatrical experiences began in middle school and have extended to multiple community theaters in the area. Brooke Angel (Co-Stage Manager) is excited to be working on her 31st show in the NOVA area. She has been involved in almost every facet of theater, from producer to props mistress to award-winning actress. Her most recent shows include PCP’s Fool for Love and LTA’s Tale of the Allergist’s Wife. Special thanks to her cast and crew, and Scott for his overabundance of patience and unwavering support.
Jamie Blake (Co-Wardrobe) is thrilled to be working with MEJ and this fabulous cast and crew. Over the past 30-plus years, she’s been on and off the LTA Board of Governors, has won Best Producer twice (a few years ago with Eileen Doherty for Widdershins) and long, long ago won Best New Member. Special thanks to her mom and sister Liz for keeping her balanced. And to Rocco, who gives her sweet kisses when he wants to go out in the early hours of the morning. Always to Dad and Beamer. At LTA, she has served on numerous crews backstage, produced, stage managed, choreographed, performed onstage and taught children’s theater classes. She is happy to join our talented director as alumni of the Broadway Teachers Workshop in Manhattan. Her French roots go back to her mother, a native of Rouen, France, and extended family (many cousins, uncles and aunts) from Rouen to Avignon, France. Merci. Je suis heureux de travailler avec une fonte si douée et de servir d’équipier.
Dennis Dubberley (Set Construction) joins The History Boys crew after being away from LTA for nearly a quarter-century and is excited to be back! In the 1980s and 1990s, he led the set construction crews for Oklahoma, Man of La Mancha, The Fantasticks and Driving Miss Daisy. Margaret Evans-Joyce (Co-Wardrobe) has a very long résumé at LTA. She has produced almost a dozen productions and stage managed almost twice that many. She served four years as LTA’s President and is currently the Executive Secretary of its Board of Governors. She recently received the Outstanding Service to LTA Award and shared the award for the 2014 Outstanding Production of the Year for Avenue Q. After a long career in special education, Margaret retired five years ago and is now an adjunct professor at Howard University in the area of speech and language pathology.
Anne-Elisabeth Halbert (Co-French Dialect Coach) is a French teacher at a local elementary and middle school. She has past experience in theater and has known Frank Shutts for years. She is very excited to be involved in the production of The History Boys and has enjoyed working with the cast!
David Hale (Sound Design) has won many LTA, ACT and WATCH awards for outstanding production and sound designs. David designed the LTA productions of Chicago, Greater Tuna and Gross Indecency and over 30 other past LTA plays and musical productions. His award-winning sound designs include Master Class, Das Barbecü, The Teahouse of the August Moon and Hot L Baltimore, among many others. David currently serves as LTA Treasurer and Building Governor and has been an LTA member since 1974.
Joanna Henry (Assistant Director) has directed more than 75 productions, most recently The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), the female version of The Odd Couple and the award-winning 33 Variations (LTA). She also directed Rabbit Hole (Ruby Griffith Award for Best Production of a Play), the premiere production of Black Hole (PCP) and too many musicals to name. Other directing credits include three benefits (BC/EFA, the Olney Theatre Center and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) and an acclaimed regional production of W;t on the Eastern Shore. Meet the Crew (continued)
Micheal J. O’Connor (Master Electrician) frequently works as master electrician at many local community theaters, including A Christmas Carol for LTA and Mary Poppins for RCP. He was the co-ME for LTA’s recent production of To Kill a Mockingbird with Pam Leonowich, a favorite partner. He can often be found backstage or in the tech booth, always in the dark.
Leslie Reed (Set Painting) was enchanted by LTA’s warmth and creative genius the first time she was asked to help with the props of Blithe Spirit. A magical door had opened to reveal the world of make-believe fabricated from hard work, imagination, superb talent, and a super abundance of cooperation and creativity. Gathering props, painting sets, calling volunteers, researching details, cleaning, sweeping and sewingare all building blocks of a production. Being able to do it in the LTA community is truly a gift.
Frank D. Shutts II (Director) is thrilled to introduce The History Boys, winner of the Tony Award for Best Play, to the LTA audience. He is happy to work, again, with Mary Beth, Kath, Cheryl, Ann-Elisabeth, David, Kit and Jean, Ken and Patti, and numerous others who tolerate his pickiness. And for the first time with Brooke, Jocelyn, Matt and the talented cast of The History Boys. Frank last directed the 2015 WATCH Award-winning In the Heights last summer at LTA. During his “free time,” Frank is the main-stage director for Bishop Ireton High School, now in his 11th year. Frank had the “parcel” passed on to him by Dorthie R. Kogelman at Groveton High School and hopes to pass the “parcel” of theater on to many generations.
Kit Sibley and Jean Schlichting (Co-Costume Design) generally work as a team and have costumed many shows at LTA and other local theaters. LTA costume design awards include Hairspray, 1776, Into the Woods, Ragtime and The Full Monty, with a WATCH Award also for Hairspray. Many thanks to Frank and Mary Beth for inviting us to explore the world of British prep schools with this talented cast, with the opportunity to brush up on French language skills as an added bonus! Nous sons enchantées, et nous esperons que vous appreciez le show.
Cheryl Sinsabaugh (British Dialect Coach) has spent her life in amateur (community) theater all over the world, mainly onstage, but in recent years she has worked backstage on stage managing, lighting, makeup, props, etc. She has worked for Frank as dialect/ accent coach on several plays, both at LTA and also at Bishop Ireton School. Other plays for which she has been the dialect/accent coach are A Christmas Carol (LTA) and Pride and Prejudice and The Miracle Worker (ACCT). Cheryl lives in Annandale with her husband, Michael, and two Siamese cats.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
