Director’s Notes
The 2015-16 season is our Director’s Dream Season, which features shows that our directors have long wanted to do. This is my choice…
On Friday evening of the 2010 Presidents Day weekend, I chaperoned the Bishop Ireton High School Drama Club on its annual field trip to New York City. That night we saw In the Heights, which was taking Broadway by storm and which opened my eyes to the future of American musicals and excited me and moved me in so many ways that I knew I had to share its magic with the LTA audience. This is a five-year dream come true.
It is the story of bodega owner Usnavi de la Vega, his grandmother (abuela) Claudia, and their close-knit barrio of Washington Heights in the northern tip of Manhattan. This section of NYC has always been home to immigrants, beginning with the Jews and Irish. Later, when Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory, Latinos and Hispanics came to call it home. Now Washington Heights hosts the largest population of Dominicans outside the Dominican Republic, followed in number by Puerto Ricans and Cubans. This melting pot of Spanish-speaking people with every shade of skin color possible is strongly united in their language—and their journey.
Its familiar theme of finding home and belonging has been seen before in musicals such as Fiddler on the Roof and West Side Story, but it has never had such an authentic voice. Composer Lin-Manuel Miranda and writer Quiara Alegría Hudes share, in many ways, the story of Usnavi and his community, because they themselves have had to wrestle with identity, belonging, fitting in, and finding home.
For some of you, it may take a minute or two to reconcile musical theater with the sound and vernacular of today’s Latin America. But hang on, have patience and faith. You will find the reward very satisfying and moving. I did.
Finally, I would be remiss not to mention the elephant in the room. America is at the center of a big national debate on immigration. Who belongs here? Who qualifies? Who doesn’t? I am not going to turn my notes into a political forum, but I will say this. As part Cherokee, I often ask myself those questions.
¡Disfrute!
Frank

Some of the favorite shows she has worked on include Cabaret (DS and LTA), Hair (LTA), Into the Woods (LTA) and Avenue Q (LTA). Cristina would like to thank everyone working on this show and her wonderful husband, Matthew.
Alexandra Mees (Co-Wardrobe) is very excited to return to LTA for yet another show. Alexandra came to the D.C. area a year ago and joined LTA last August. She has helped out with props and wardrobe and as an ASM at LTA, PCP and ACCT. Alexandra wants to thank cast and crew alike for their effort and is looking forward to a great show.
Claire O’Brien (Hair and Makeup) is usually found on the stage rather than behind the scenes. Her recent roles at LTA include Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime, Lucy the Slut in Avenue Q, Estelle in The Full Monty and Marcy Park in The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee. Other credits include Serena in Legally Blonde (RCP), Natalie in Next to Normal (TFTC), Sheila in Hair (KAT), Janet in The Drowsy Chaperone (MCP) and recently at DS in Bachelorette.
Leslie Reed (Set Painting) was enchanted by LTA’s warmth and creative genius the first time she was asked to help with the props of Blithe Spirit. A magical door had opened to reveal the world of make-believe fabricated from hard work, imagination, superb talent and a super abundance of cooperation and creativity. Gathering props, painting sets, calling volunteers, researching, details, cleaning, sweeping, and sewing are all building blocks of a production. Being able to do it in the LTA community is truly a gift.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
