Director’s Notes
“It had nothing to do with shocking people,” says Richard O’Brien ( The Rocky Horror Show creator). “I wrote Rocky for me. I didn’t write it with an audience in mind or for it to be a hit.” And here we are 41 years after the first production in London opened, celebrating a show that was adapted into the biggest of all cult classic films (and has the longest-running release in film history).
So how do you take something so popular and loved throughout the world, with fans who know every second of the script, and create an experience that is new and fresh without alienating those who are not Rocky “virgins”? Go to the beginning. At its core, Rocky is an homage to the B horror films of the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. When I thought of those movies, The House of Wax, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and others, one thing kept popping in my mind … 3D! Movie houses and drive-ins with audiences wearing those 3D glasses, eating popcorn, screaming and laughing at the screen. Live 3D theater is not an easy task, and I certainly did not want to pull focus from the actors, music, dancing and story being played on stage. I’m so proud of this amazing production team, which took this insane vision and ran with it, so many great ideas and the professionalism and talent to know how to execute everything I asked of them. So wear the 3D glasses if you like or not. Either way, you are going to have an amazing experience.
O’Brien wanted to write a show that rocked! As has rock music throughout the decades, the music of Rocky has transformed from the original London score to the film version to the 2001 Broadway revival to this production. I think that we have honored our creator’s vision with our music. Both Chris and myself agreed many months before production began that this show must rock, must be loud, must be felt by our audience. We knew we needed to find actors who could make each role their own, adding their talent and creativity, which we have found, and I could not be more excited.
But why is this show so popular? Personally, I believe it’s about celebrating who you are and not apologizing for it. “Don’t Dream It, Be It.” There is a reason why that line is repeated over and over. Seems like the right way to live, and this show has inspired millions to do just that. Hopefully, it inspires you.
Enjoy the show!

Rachel Alberts and Bobbie HerbstA murderously funny, witty and fast-paced comedy/thriller by Ken Ludwig. It’s 1936 and Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But when one of the guests ends up dead, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turns dangerous. Gillette takes it upon himself to assume the persona of his beloved Holmes, to track down the killer before his next victim appears. The danger and hilarity are non-stop in this glittering whodunit.

Meet the Crew
Susan Boyd (Hair and Makeup Designer) is pleased to work at LTA again. Recent costumes and/or hair/makeup designs include Witness for the Prosecution,The Woman in Black, Dial ‘M’ for Murder, The 39 Steps and Boeing, Boeing (LTA); The Importance of Being Earnest, It’s a Wonderful Life: the Radio Play, Frost/Nixon, Social Security, Rumors, Perfect Wedding and The Game’s Afoot (MCP); This (VTC); and The Dixie Swim Club (PCP). In her day job, Susan is a wardrobe stylist and image consultant.
Sherry Clarke (Props and Set Dressing) had as her first “dabbling in the arts” the typical neighborhood plays as a child, where she was usually able to bully the others into letting her play lead. Fast-forwarding to her late teens/early twenties, she was firmly ensconced in high school/college plays and musicals and began a very gratifying 13-year career as a vocalist based out of Seattle, traveling north to Alaska (quite literally) and south along the West Coast. Eventually wearying of chasing the ever-elusive fame and fortune, she settled in Alexandria, where, after raising two wonderful young men (well, of course, they are!), she discovered a home at LTA in which to explore her theatrical roots once again by way of props design/crew, sound/lights crew and stage manager positions. Sherry is very excited to be a part of this production of The Rocky Horror Show and is probing the depths of her creative abilities (and just a tad of her “dark side”) for set dressing and properties.
Jay A. Cohen (Co-Producer) is happy to be producing again for his fourth LTA production. Not a stranger to the area, Jay has been working in area-theater productions for 44 years. Jay’s last show was the spoof play of the Alfred Hitchcock movie The 39 Steps, and he won an award as best producer for the LTA production of TheTeahouse of the August Moon. When not producing, Jay works with other nonprofits and sits on the board of directors for BalletNOVA Center for Dance in Falls Church, Virginia.
David Correia (Sound Design) is leading sound design for his second musical of the year. David was happy to assist Janice Rivera in her first musical as the sound designer for Spamalot. Earlier in the year, David did the sound for Blues for an Alabama Sky (PCP) and LTA’s production of Proof. Last year, David did the sound design for A Chorus Line (TAP) and Anne of Green Gables (ACCT). David received a WATCH nomination for Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical for Avenue Q earlier this year at LTA. David received a 2011 WATCH Award for Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical and LTA Award for Sound Design for Hairspray.
Ken and Patti Crowley (Lighting Design) are excited to be working with Kris and Chris, along with a talented cast and crew, on this amazing and challenging production. Other noteworthy designs include 33 Variations, Picnic, TheSecret Garden, The Will Rogers Follies, Into the Woods, Blithe Spirit, Das Barbecü, The Teahouse of the August Moon and I Hate Hamlet. He is excited to be working with Kristofer and Stefan, our fantastic producers Jay and Dick, the outstanding stage managers Joan and Carlyn, and a very talented cast and crew. Chris has been honored to receive WATCH Awards for music directing past LTA productions of Hairspray, Cabaret, Das Barbecü and Tommy. He has also been the recipient of the LTA Demaine Award for Music Direction on numerous productions, as well as ACT Awards for Music Direction. Chris is looking forward to music directing LTA’s production of In the Heights in the summer of 2015. In addition to LTA, Chris is the music director for Bishop Ireton High School’s theater arts program.
Russell Wyland (Rigging) has been a member of LTA for 24 years and has served the theater in several capacities, including chairman of the Sound Department, head of the Selection Committee and three years as President. Russ is serving his third term as Governor for Production. He is the chair and only member of the LTA rigging department, a position he has held for over 15 years.

The Council of the Little Theatre of Alexandria is a support group of interested and dedicated people who support the theatre with special contributions. Additionally, the Council has three social events per year, provides for the winter holiday decorations for the theatre, and maintains the Council Memorial Garden. The Council was organized in 1961 and presently has about 80 members, most of whom are long-term and wellestablished LTA members. Past contributions include: a new range for the Council Green Room of LTA, folding chairs and tables throughout the theatre, brass plates for the new theatre seats, new draperies in the Council Room, the computerized box office system, several grand drapes over the years, and many varied technical enhancements. Contributions to LTA from the Council have exceeded $200,000 and we gratefully accept donations from friends and members to assist in our support of LTA. We welcome new members and if you would like to become a member of the Council please feel free to contact the theatre or any of the Council officers. We are very pleased and honored to be a part of the Alexandria artistic community and are proud to be supporting one of the best community theatres in America today.
