TOCRA’S ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM AND PARK
ACADEMIC GRADUATION PROJECT
Heritage preservation
2021
The project was designed to safeguard one of the neglected famous archaeological sites in Libya and one of the Pentapolis cities, which is Tocra’s Ancient City-Taucheira-.
In order to achieve preservation, the project addressed designing a museum that integrates with the site and hosts the ancient city’s artefacts, as well as designing a master plan that narrates the history of the site, while providing a variety of activities. In other words, it transforms the neglected site into a preserved tourism destination.

The master plan design focuses on providing leisure and educational activities that relate to the history of the ancient city and teleports the visitors to ancient times. The master plan also solved the challenge of facilitating tourists’ accessibility throughout the site as
the site has a slightly contoured land with many ancient quarries. In response, the master plan provided paths that make it easier to walk on the harsh land, as well as varying ramps that facilitate accessibility to all.
| 11
Archaeological Museum and Park
The project spans an astonishing area of 57ha., making it relatively hard for visitors to enjoy their tours solely on foot. Accordingly, varying types of transportation were integrated and strategically planned in the master plan to create a more accessible environment for visitors of different ages and conditions.

AR TECHNOLOGY
The master plan teleports the visitors to the life of ancient civilization, as it includes 4 loops that follow a reverse chronology while they pass through the major ancient remains in the site. These 4 loops are of different lengths allowing different experiences depending on the visitors’ desire.
The master plan also divides the site into zones providing different activities and addressing a large array of visitors to ensure a pleasant and engaging visit to anyone in the park, all while including important amenities such as WCs and specifically drinking water fountains.

To aid in the interpreation of the site information panels around major attractions were provided and many of them used AR technology for further interpretation as the majority of remains are severly destructed.

The heart of the building hosts a Roman-inspired courtyard, which provides a varying array of activities and connects the building to the surrounding site. This courtyard also provides a summary of Tocra’s diverse landscape - Terracota lands, Petrified sandstone and the Mediterranean. Additionally, it is centred by a multi-use arena designed for flexibility and
diversity allowing temporary exhibits In efforts to integrate inspirations from
activities such as hologram shows, live enactments, exhibits and displays of large artefacts.
integrate with the site, the museum facades presented many architectural elements in the historic site.

Avoiding museum fatigue was a major factor in the interior design, diversity in the exhibition space between natural light and artificial light, exhibition spaces and reflection spaces, enclosure and openness to the outdoors, create varying atmospheres, which makes the visitors trip more relaxing and exciting. And in response, they are encouraged to spend more time within the museum.
Inspirations from the ancient archaeological site were also reflected in the interior design, such as arches and Latin engravings.

Mixed-use/Urban design
2021
The waterfront of the city of Benghazi is an iconic and historically significant part of the city that hosts most of the historical buildings in the city and serves as the city center of Benghazi. However, it encountered damage during the war that took its toll on a lot of these valuable buildings.
This project addresses the urban revitalisation of a portion of Benghazi’s waterfront by preserving and adapting the historic build-
ings to correspond to modern use while providing some modern structures that relate to the identity and architectural elements of the waterfront historic buildings.

In efforts to revive this iconic area, various activities that encourage pedestrian traffic were introduced, such as commercial use. Additionally, buildings of great value were suggested to be renovated and either maintained their original use or adapted to a more modern one, they will also be presented with a new surrounding landscape that promotes activity, such as the old cinema building, which was accompanied by a landscape for artists and musicians.
A new hotel tower was also presented in the area to play as a gate that identifies this location in the city, this building was inspired by the architectural elements of the surrounding historic buildings from a modern perspective.
Most importantly, the complex had major issues with pedestrian connectivity due to the roads surrounding it, which were mitigated by the use of tunnels and bridges connecting the site to the waterfront.

The hotel tower aims to transform the area into a business, commercial and tourism centre, that invites people to visit this historic area subsequent to the abandonment it witnessed after the war. In that sense, it hosts diverse activities, that attract people for both leisure and business.
Not to mention that it introduces greenery to this area, by using a set of roof gardens on different levels.

AL-JUMHURIYAH MATERNITY HOSPITAL ACADEMIC PROJECT
Al-Jumhuriyah Hospital is a project designed to provide a hospital specialized in maternity treatment. It is designed as a replacement for the previous hospital that was located on the site. However, contrary to the previous one, the new design aims to provide a healthier and more home-like environment for its patients. Accordingly, the project utilises many strategies for future hospitals.

Interior design 2023
As part of the efforts taking place to renovate the campus of the University of Benghazi after the unfortunate damage due to the war, I was part of the design team responsible for designing the interior of the main administration building on the campus to adapt it for modern use.
In this project, I participated in conceptualising the overall theme of the interior design, the materials, and the colour scheme. As well as, the interior design and rendering of the entrance foyer and the cafe.

Subsequent to developing the design, I was responsible for developing shop drawings of the cladding materials and furnishings, and revising that the supplier is providing them according to our drawings.
Currently, I am the coordinator that follows up on the installation of these claddings in the site to ensure they match the design we requested from the supplier.

La Scoula Per L’Italia di domani, is a competition
I took part in when I was interning in Rome, Italy. The competition brief provided locations in Italy where new schools are required, which follow nowadays standards.
In this project, I was part of a team where I worked in the initial conceptualising phase of the idea, and subsequently in the visualisation of the project.
The design focused on providing a playful environment for students where they are motivated, while also portraying a playful inviting exterior, and following a budget.
The project was successfully shortlisted for the second phase of the competition.

Renovation competition
Tommaso Pedrotti Refuge is a refuge built in the early 1900s on a rocky ledge in the Adamello Brenta Natural Park and is considered a historic figure that has gone under maintenance over the years to preserve. However, after careful analysis by the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini, it was realised that it needs a partial renovation intervention that requires the demolishing of the top level and reconstructing it to bear the environmental conditions of the site and also enhancing the function of the interior.
I was part of the design team that participated in this renovation competition, as well as being responsible for the visualisation of both the renders and diagrams.

The design idea was to create an installation that makes a statement, which contrats with the existing without compromising the authenticity of the building. In that sense, the design aimed to create a top level that relates to some of the materials used in the refuge facades, but used shapes that interpret the previous top level in a more modern way, with a modern metal roofing.
The new interior also introduces a viewing gallery that aligns with the corridor axis and overlooks the mountain ledge, creating an interesting interior space that opens to nature. The top level also introduces environmental sustainability by using solar panels in the inclined roof.

Greeko Moderno is a hotel apartment building designed with respect to the privacy required in the Libyan culture by utilising courtyards for each apartment. The project also values reflecting the architectural style of the Mediterranean with a modern interpretation in both shapes and materials. In this project, I was responsible for the conceptualization, design, drafting and visualization.

Moderno Hotel Apartments
The hotel apartment replicates attached housing to avoid a bulky huge form and also provide diversity in the facade.
It was also an essential concept in this design to create the least number of openings to the street as a response to the Libyan culture that values privacy. For that reason, a set of courtyards were included to provide connectivity with nature without compromising privacy.

The first phase included the general functions of a vacation home, while the second phase included a guestroom with a toilet, upgrading this vacation home into a potential small villa for the grandparents. Relaxation and openness to the outdoors were important design aspects, it can be interpreted in the plans, as great attention is paid to the living space that overlooks the garden and swimming pool. More importantly, the living space can be extended to the terrace when opening the sliding door. Thus connecting it to the outdoor dining and built in BBQ area.
