welcome Nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside is the warm and welcoming Mid Herts Golf Club As one of the oldest golf clubs in the country and with a golf course designed by five times Open Champion James Braid, Mid Herts offers a true test for any golfer.
THE 18-HOLE COURSE OFFERS A CLASSIC HEATHLAND TERRAIN WITH RIPPLED FAIRWAYS AND FIRM AND TRUE GREENS THAT ARE PROTECTED BY TRADITIONAL GRASSY HOLLOWS.
Combine this with a relaxed and friendly clubhouse and range of excellent off course facilities, Mid Herts provides golfers with a memorable experience for members, their families and all visitors.
5
Our History In 2017 the club was 125 years old and celebrations were held throughout the year to commemorate this event Mid Herts Golf Club was first established in 1892 when permission to play golf on Gustard Wood Common had been granted by the Lords of the Manor and seven months later the 9-hole course was opened for play. Horace T Rawlins who worked as a caddie at the Royal Isle of Wight Club, moved to become Mid Herts’ first Groundsman and Professional at the age of 18. Two years later Horace emigrated to the United States working as a Professional and in course design, including Springhaven Club in Philadelphia with which
6
Mid Herts has a twinning arrangement. Horace T Rawlins occupies a unique position in the golfs history books: he was the winner of the very first US Open Championship in October 1895 at Newport Rhode Island and was runner-up in the 1896 US Open. He died in 1935 at the age of 60 and the statue of Horace by sculptor Ben Twiston-Davies, was placed near the Clubhouse as part of the 125th anniversary celebration. The clubhouse was constructed in 1897 on the current site and the course was enlarged to 18
holes in 1923 under the guidance of James Braid extending beyond The Slype and Kimpton Road. In 1935 the Club purchased Manorial Rights and became the owners of Gustard Wood Common, although the public retain the rights of ‘fresh air and exercise’ over the land. By the early 1960s golf became more difficult on the north of the Common due to increasing road traffic and the Club purchased 21 acres of farmland to accommodate three new holes and a practice area.
The tees and greens on the Common were redesigned and came into play in 1968 and apart from some later modifications, the layout is the course we play today. The original wooden clubhouse was replaced by a brick building during the same period, with further extensions in the mid-1970’s.
Since our 100th anniversary in 1992 there has been considerable investment in all aspects of our course, with the clubhouse extensively redeveloped and refurbished in 2000.
The refurbished Clubhouse was opened by Sir Terry Wogan, who was an honorary member of the club.
Recent Times In recent times the Clubhouse bar and dining area has been completely refurbished together with the locker rooms. We have also moved away from having a traditional Pro Shop and now have ‘The Hub’ model which is widely used on the Continent and in the United States. Our electricity comes from our own solar panels and in 2020 we installed our own borehole for water to be supplied to the course.
On the course, many of the “humps and hollows” that are typical of the James Braid design have been restored, with further works planned. Many of the copses have been cleared allowing the natural grasses and heather to re-grow and this work in ongoing.
HERE AT MID HERTS WE CONTINUE TO IMPROVE OUR GRASSLANDS AND ENCOURAGE BACK THE NATURAL WILDLIFE TO OUR RARE AND ACID HEATHLAND COURSE.
7
The Course Founded in 1892 Mid Herts Golf Club is one of the country’s original golf courses steeped in beauty, style and challenge Maintaining its original heathland feel combined with a contemporary warm welcome and modern facilities, makes it a favoured and well-loved course for local golfers and visitors alike. Mid Herts Golf Club was fortunate to benefit from the input of renowned golfer and course designer, James Braid, when
8
the course layout was extended to 18 holes in 1923. The result is an established, varied course offering a dynamic and challenging round from tee-off until you complete the 18th hole. The course never disappoints with undulations and various natural hazards including encroaching trees and thick rough, combined with designed hazards such as strategically placed greenside
and fairway bunkers. From both the white and yellow tees, Mid Herts Golf Club is Par 69 for men and from the red tees Par 71 for ladies. However, don’t think you’re without a challenge as with the new World Handicap System we have been given a slope rating of 136 off the white tees, 129 off the yellow and 130 off the red based on our topography.
to be c on t i n u ed
All your skills will be put to the test as it plays around 6,000 yards off the white tees with five exciting and varied Par 3’s. Putting surfaces at Mid Herts Golf Club are well-established and maintained ensuring they are firm and well-draining with no need for temporary greens to come into play. Three of the holes incorporate two-tier greens designed to challenge even the best. Elsewhere, long hitting will give you the edge over your competition.
This is a course designed with the aspiring and accomplished golfer in mind, one who likes to be presented with challenges and decisions in order to achieve a low score. Your skill on both long and short recovery shots will be tested and honed. Mid Herts is fortunate to be able to place considerable ongoing major investment into the beautiful heathland course ensuring a course both for today and future generations. The heathland has naturally excellent drainage meaning you can enjoy a game whatever the time of year.
The course is laid out across one of Hertfordshire’s few remaining lowland heathlands and acid grasslands. It is species rich, with tracts of heather, grasses and wildflowers, as well as a home to a range of woodland fauna. Over 90 bird boxes have been installed in recent years by the Club and the red kite, great spotted woodpecker, tawny owl and nuthatch are regularly seen, as well as bats.

THE GREENKEEPING TEAM Jody Wilson is the Course Manager who has been at Mid Herts for 15 years. His team are well qualified to carry out the majority of the work in house and he only needs to use external support for the very specialised work.
The ongoing plan at Mid Herts is to continue to open up woodland areas to encourage the heathland, manage the grassland in such a way as to further encourage wildlife, the seeding of wild flowers and to regenerate and encourage new growth of rare examples of Juniper that can be found around the golf course.
With modern and well-maintained machinery they are able to present the golf course to a high standard with attention to detail and showcase a ‘hidden gem’ within a village location.
MID HERTS GOLF COURSE IS A BEAUTIFUL HEATHLAND COURSE AND A HAVEN FOR WILDLIFE.
Using a Resource Management system Jody maintains the golf course in a costeffective way and keeps abreast of new and approved products on the market, as well as sharing ideas with his colleagues in the industry.
The Club continues to create heather features with intensive leaf collection and with regular turf stripping, more and more heather is appearing. With a total of 43 bunkers refurbishing is ongoing and will continue with reshaping,
remodelling and introducing bunker linings that will give longevity and quality to the playability of the bunkers. Pathways play an important part in the aesthetics of any golf course and improvement to several is underway and will be ongoing. Work has also been planned to upgrade and enhance the practice facilities for the benefit of the members and the Mid Herts Coaching Team. With the gradual increase in rainfall over the past 10 years that has doubled from 549mm to over 1000mm, golf courses are now having to deal with drainage issues and action is being taken with a drainage program to keep the course open as much as possible. The greens are most affected and these will be drained outside of the main golfing season with an ongoing plan to continue this throughout the golf course.

Course Tour Hole One
Hole Two
Hole Three
A testing start as the large tree beckons when you stand on the tee! Ideally, keep your ball up the left half of the fairway as this gives you the best line for your approach to the green, which is beautifully framed by trees, humps and the hollows. A longish green that slopes left to right means that pars are hard to come by.
Mid Herts signature hole is one of golf’s great pleasures. Playing from an elevated tee the enticing prospect of making the green below is made all the more interesting by the narrow tree-lined approach. Accuracy is key to avoid the bunkers protecting this green and if you can’t carry the bunkers, lay up or aim for the gap!
Thread your drive through the funnel of trees. A tee shot too long or too short will leave you a difficult approach on this dog leg par 4, but get it just right and you’ve a good chance of scoring. A deep hollow on the left and a bunker on the right guard this compact green.
13
con t i n u ed
Hole Four
Hole Five
Hole Six
Plenty of space to play with on this long par 4. A good tip here when playing match play is never to give a putt on this tricky, left to right sloping green. A challenging hole where high handicappers will welcome that extra shot.
The fifth hole requires a solid shot to a two tiered green. A tee shot slightly left or right will be punished on this tree lined fairway. It’s best to lay up if you can’t carry the carefully placed bushes that protect the green. Whether you take one shot or two to reach the green, remember to look back for a beautiful view. This is a ‘call up’ hole.
Stay right with your drive if you can, but beware the perfectly positioned fairway bunker! Make sure your approach has enough oomph to cope with the two tiered green. There is a tree just left of the green and a pot bunker to the right just waiting to snaffle up any shot not perfectly struck to this compact target.
14
Hole Seven
Hole Eight
Hole Nine
A tough tee shot for gentlemen that must be threaded between the bunkers on the right and the trees on the left. The ladies get a good head start here and an opportunity to pick up some points. The approach runs left to right with a green side bunker waiting to gather up anything short. Enjoy the view to the right, which changes with the seasons.
A nice, easy par 3 that’s definitely a favourite with the ladies. The prevailing wind tends to help here. See if you can emulate the amazing feat of one of our Lady members who hit a hole in one here in two consecutive games!
This left to right dogleg par 5 offers the longer hitters a birdie chance, but for high handicappers it often plays harder than the stroke index would suggest. Take an extra club for your approach to this two tiered green when the pin in on the top tier.
15
con t i n u ed
Hole Ten
Hole Eleven
Hole Twelve
Pond to the left, trees to the right! From the gentlemen’s tee you need to shape your drive right to left but from the ladies tee it’s got to be straight down the middle! Consider laying up with your approach shot as missing this green presents all sorts of chipping challenges from the grassy hollows.
This long, straight par 4 has priority over the 13th Green and 14th Tee and the men’s tee invites you to open your shoulders. Be mindful of the bunker 40 yards short of the green on your approach. As a par 5 for ladies and with a large flat green this hole is a good opportunity for birdie.
A classic par 3 with a well protected target. A short hole from the ladies tee means you can easily reach the green but a good tip here for all, is to club up as all the problems are short of the green.
16
Hole Thirteen
Hole Fourteen
Hole Fifteen
A generous fairway with a couple of strategically placed bunkers either side just to keep you concentrating. Stroll past the pretty pond to the ladies tee. The green is surrounded by some tricky mounds and a devilish pot bunker, a real James Braid feature that will test your short game!
At under 300 yards, big hitters may be tempted to clatter a driver as close as you can, but beware; the hole becomes narrower the further up you go! Heather to the left and two fairway bunkers to the right are well placed to catch the ladies tee shots. With humps and hollows to the left of the green and a bunker on the right, you then find a sloping green that makes for a challenging putt.
This long par 4 justifies its position as stroke index one on the gentlemen’s card. A slight left to right dogleg, so stay left or you can easily become blocked out with your second shot. A par 5 on the ladies card but still a difficult hole, especially the drive through a narrow alley between trees and heather. Once you make the green, you will be rewarded with a large, receptive putting surface.

Hole Sixteen
Hole Seventeen
Hole Eighteen
At first glance a fairly innocuous looking par 3, but a cunningly placed tree protects the left side of the green. A lengthways hollow towards the end of the fairway will gather up anything short, whilst the ground in front of the green will gather your ball towards the bunker on the right. If you hit the green, there’s a good chance of a birdie as the putts run straight and true.
Accuracy is key from the tee to avoid the two bunkers on the right and the mounds on the left of this narrow tree lined fairway. Club up for your approach shot to reach this punch bowl green, but don’t go too long as there’s trouble at the back!
An excellent par 5 to finish on. The drive is through a chute of trees to a fairway that becomes wider the further you go. A forward tee for the ladies offers a chance to carry the road to the open fairway. Your second shot needs to favour the right hand side to give you the best approach. It may be your last hole of the day, but this green is tricky, so our final tip is don’t give any gimmies here!

JUNIOR COACHING ACADEMY Mid Herts Golf Club has a small but growing Junior Section which accepts young golfers up to the age of 18.
Conor O’Grady is Head of Junior Academy Coaching and is driven to help Juniors get into golf and develop their game to become superstars of the future.
Our General Manager is the Club Welfare Officer whose role is to safeguard the welfare of children at the golf club and report any concerns.
The Junior Coaching Academy is a fantastic fun activity for children as they not only learn the technique, but also life skills to transform complete beginners into junior golfers ready for regular play or membership of the Golf Club.
At weekends and during the school holidays there are always Junior Coaching Programmes and ‘Summer Camp’ and we are now linking up with a local 9-hole course to be able to offer lessons out on a golf course.
As a Club we are also gaining accreditation to SafeGolf and working with England Golf and the Golf Foundation to offer The Junior National Passport, which is a structured learning programme for children aged 6-12, endorsed by the PGA.
After learning the game in the Academy, we help juniors obtain a Handicap Index and then introduce them to competitions.
In 2019 Mid Herts Golf Club hosted the Herts Junior iTour as well as the Girls Championship & Boys Under 14 Championship.

Our aim is to give you an outstanding golfing experience from the moment you arrive. That way we know you’ll want to come back.
28
What’s special about Mid Herts?
Is there a strict etiquette for visitors to observe?
We have several starting points on the course and no requirement to book tee times which means The Hub has great flexibility in getting members and visitors onto the course. We always suggest calling ahead in case there is a large competition or Society heading off – but our aim is to maximise our members, guests and visitors’ opportunities to play golf.
We try to strike a relaxed approach at Mid Herts and rely on our members and visitors to enjoy the course and the clubhouse by simply observing a common courtesy to each other. On the course we encourage everyone – members and visitors alike – to allow players to play through and to give priority to players on the tee over those putting out on an adjacent
green. For safety, golfers need to call a warning if their ball is heading towards someone in range, especially as we have footpaths and an access road running across three fairways. Whilst we have signs for ramblers and car drivers, they are not always observed. For comfort and practicality – if not always high fashion – golfers wear standard golf clothing and footwear. In the clubhouse we want you to come in, have a drink and a bite to eat and mull over the putt that got away.
We have a relaxed dress code with an accent on casual but smart – avoiding wet or muddy clothing in the lounges. It’s very low-key – but if you’re unsure – just ask – there is always a friendly member of staff to chat to.
We like to think that these are the small courtesies that make a good round an enjoyable one for all.
Who to call? If you are enquiring about a Visitor Green Fee then call The Hub on 01582 832242 Option 1. They will be able to suggest the best time to play and offer advice on green fees and clubhouse facilities.
If you are a small group of golfers or a Society then please call either Events on 01582 832242 Option 3 who will be able to help you arrange a really successful day whatever your requirements. We have a range of packages that start with just a Bacon Roll & Coffee on arrival and 18 holes of golf, to a full day with Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner with either 27 or 36 holes of golf. All societies receive a complimentary bottle of water & chocolate bar and there is a fleet of 7 buggies available for hire. On arrival you will be warmly welcomed by The Hub Team and larger groups will have a starter/marshal on the day to ensure your golfing experience is enjoyed to the full.
