1900

history

F

ounded in 1900 by a small number of far-sighted businessmen, West Essex enjoys a wealth of history and tradition, as well as being an excellent golf course. The course, situated on the edge of Epping Forest, was originally leased from a ‘Mr. Melles’ for a fee of £140 per annum, as 80 acres of farmland gave birth to West Essex Golf Club. The parkland course was designed by legendary figure James Braid, a member of the Great Triumvirate.

6

During the early years funding was required to keep the club afloat and contributions from members raised £5000 and the club was safely in the hands of its members. In 1902 the original clubhouse was built by Mr. W. Gardener of Waltham Abbey at a cost of £3,663. 10s. 7d. By then, improvements to the rough layout of the course had started and in 1903 sand arrived and was placed in the newly dug bunkers. By 1912 a new ladies clubhouse was built at a cost of £392 but within a few years the First World War had become imminent and the start of it in

1914 led to a reduction in membership subscription and an increase in club outgoings, leaving the club struggling financially. During the war the club was active in raising funds for war charities while wounded soldiers, up to 100 at a time, were on several occasions entertained and given hospitality at the club. The end of the war in 1918 saw the resumption of normal club life and the stabilisation of its financial position.

The precise history of the gradual acquisition of more land during the 1920’s is uncertain, however, we do know that in 1925 a new lease was signed for the course land over a period of 21 years commencing at £140 per annum. During most of the next two decades the course was gradually developed along with the clubhouse, which included a lounge extension added between 1935-1939. However, no sooner had it been opened then blackout curtains were covering every window as a state of war had been declared.

During World War II the course and clubhouse were showered with bombs and a crater depression is still evident just beyond the bunkers on the second hole. Following the war, the club went from strength to strength and in 1954 the club brought 4.6 acres of land for £220, which now plays home to the 12th green and 13th fairway.

By the 1980s it had become inevitable that in order to progress the club needed more space for parking and development and the members approved a move to the present site and the construction of the new clubhouse in 1989. West Essex has evolved dramatically over a century and now stands proud as one of the premier clubs in Essex.

The following year saw the club finally purchase the land on which the course stood at a fee of £10,160. The course was again developed in the mid1970s with a land swap providing the opportunity to open new holes. 7

about the course

A

course of two distinctive halves, West Essex’s 6,373-yard championship parkland course provides 18 superb holes, playing to a par of 71. ‘The West’ is routed through the glorious Epping Forest at Chingford with picturesque views across the city of London, including landmarks such as Canary Wharf, the London Eye, the Shard and Wembley Stadium. Ranked in the top four best in Essex by top100golfcourses.co.uk, the course is a real test of accuracy and power.

The tree-lined front nine meanders through the forest, uphill and downhill, requiring accuracy and precision, while the back nine is flatter and longer, allowing you the opportunity to open your shoulders and let go. The toughest hole on the scorecard is the par four, 470-yard 13th. Hit too far to the left on this right to left dogleg and you will find your ball in the trees. Aim for the centre of the fairway for your best chance of par but beware of the bunkers lining the green when hitting the approach.

West Essex is also home to the smallest championship green in England. Nicknamed ‘the Frying Pan’ by members, the 159-yard 5th is a short downhill par three where you are trying to land your ball on a green that measures just 14 yards wide.

course tour

I

f you have never played at West Essex you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tours. Hole 1 - Par 4 - 272 Yards

Great opening hole to set your round off – the long hitters can drive the green, the more conservative golfer needs to drive the ball to the middle/ right half of the fairway, a short iron to a flat green will leave a birdie putt.

Hole 2 - Par 4 - 384 Yards

Hole 4 - Par 4 - 371 Yards

A blind tee shot over the ridge to the right half of the fairway will leave a medium to long shot into a narrow green; accuracy and distance control are the key here. When you find the green there’s a comfortable birdie chance.

Your drive must be placed to the right of the fairway, the slope will kick back every ball to the left, leaving you with a short iron to an equally sloping green. Club choice for your second shot is essential but make sure you favour the right half of the green.

Hole 3 - Par 3 - 160 Yards A short par three. Make sure you stay beneath the hole as this will leave you a good birdie chance. Anything long and you’re facing a challenging par.

Hole 5 - Par 3 - 159 Yards Another short par three – but don’t take this hole too lightly. Be positive with your tee shot to the left half of the green and the slope will gather the ball to the green to leave you with a possible birdie chance.

11

1900

12

course tour Hole 6 - Par 4 - 329 Yards

Hole 8 - Par 5 - 496 Yards

Hole 9 - Par 4 - 411 Yards

Play your tee shot to the left half of the fairway, this will leave you with a medium to short iron to an elevated green so make sure you take another club to reach the green. A slope from back to front will test your putting skills.

One of the best tee shots on the course. A relatively short par five but you must treat the hole with care. Play to the left side of the marker off the tee to leave yourself with a chance of going for the green. All the trouble is right on this hole so take care when you play across the slope. The green falls on the left and right so accuracy with the approach is needed.

A stunning tee shot to tempt you to open your shoulders but play safer to the left of the fairway as the slope will gather the ball into the fairway. Your second shot into a smaller target could be anything from a long iron through to a shortish iron depending on the wind direction, but favour the right half of the green.

Hole 7 - Par 3 - 150 Yards A challenging narrow par three. Your tee shot must find the green or you will have a challenging chip to save par. There is more room to the back of this green than you think so take enough club to get there.

13

1900

course tour Hole 10 - Par 5 - 559 Yards

Hole 12 - Par 4 - 349 Yards

Hole 14 - Par 4 - 315 Yards

A tight looking driving hole, there’s more room than you think so trust your line. A full fairway wood second shot will leave you with a straight forward pitch to the green. Make sure you stay below the hole to give you an easy birdie putt.

A short par four with a bite to it, play your tee shot safely to the right half of the fairway. Then take care with your second shot, play an extra club to this elevated and very narrow green. Leave the ball underneath the hole to give you a chance of birdie - play this hole carefully and it will reward you.

Your tee shot needs to favour the left half of the fairway which will leave you with a short iron into a firm green. Just play to the middle of the green as it’s easy to run the ball through.

Hole 11 - Par 4 - 428 Yards A good drive to the left side of the fairway will leave you with a medium to long iron into a flat green; accuracy is the key to both shots.

14

Hole 13 - Par 4 - 470 Yards A big tee shot with plenty of room to the left half of the fairway will leave you with another big shot into a big flat green – needless to say this is a big hole with a big reward if you par or birdie it.

Hole 15 - Par 3- 211 Yards A great par three, your tee shot needs to be struck firmly to the left half of the green, go too far left and the bunkers will catch you, leak it out right and a ditch will swallow up the ball. Once you find the green it’s not over as the slopes will challenge your putting skills.

Hole 16 - Par 4 - 385 Yards

Hole 17 - Par 4 - 432 Yards

Hole 18 - Par 5 - 455 Yards

A dogleg right hole. Simply play your tee shot to the fairway bunker, this will leave you with a medium iron to an elevated green. Take one or two clubs more than the yardage says as it’s all carry to a high green. The green has a Mackenzie slope through the middle so clubbing is paramount and make sure you take your time over your putt as the slopes can take the ball quickly off track.

An easy and inviting tee shot to a fairway well below you. The challenge here is with your second shot. You may have a medium to long second shot remaining to a very small green so accuracy is the key here.

An inviting tee shot to the middle of the fairway will leave you with a choice of either going for the green or playing safe before the fairway bunkers. Make sure you play to the middle of the green here as anything too far right will leave you with a difficult putt or chip and anything too far left will take the ball off the green into the bunkers.

custom fitting

T

here has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes. The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing.

This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics. Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at West Essex and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting. This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic improvement in ball striking. Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing

characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise. Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores. We are the leading Custom Fitting Centre in Essex and hold all personal fitting parts in stock and for more information please telephone the Pro Shop on 0208 529 4367.

practice facilities

W

hile some might argue that golf is never a game that can be totally mastered even by the best players who earn their living from the sport, there is no dispute that anyone can get better with a little time and application and the right practice facilities.

We are currently building what will be the best practice facilities in the area. These will include a covered floodlit driving range, with both astro and natural grass tees, a large short game green with practice bunkers. These facilities will accompany our current putting green, a fine practice putting green which mirrors the fine surfaces found out on the course and a great meeting point located behind our clubhouse.

We are also constructing a 6 hole academy course with holes ranging from 80 – 140 yards. This will be perfect for beginners, juniors and anyone who wants to improve that all important short game.

societies & corporate days

W

e are delighted to welcome societies to West Essex Golf Club where we offer the warmest of welcomes and do everything we can to make your day as perfect as it can be. From your initial enquiry through to the completion of your day, one or more of our events team will be on hand to help you every step of the way and is one of the many reasons we see groups returning year after year.

We can cater for small or large groups and offer a wide range of golf packages from 18, 27 or 36 holes of golf.

Prices are highly competitive and we guarantee you and your group a day to remember.

Choose from our premium package in the winter to the deluxe offering in summer, although we are totally flexible with the range of packages and catering that we offer.

Bespoke society packages can also be discussed if you have specific requirements.

We would recommend, however, that you choose the Nicklaus package to see why our kitchen has such an enviable reputation, with coffee and a Full English Breakfast on arrival, followed by 18 holes of golf and a light lunch.

We take care over every detail and deliver the complete package that consistently exceeds the expectations of visitors or guests. For more information on booking a society day please contact us on 020 8529 7558 or email sec@westessexgolfclub.co.uk

open competitions

est Essex is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1900. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions spread throughout the season aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities. The action generally starts in May with the West Essex London Amateur Open.

The London Open Golf Championships will return to West Essex Golf Club for 2019. This year will be see the event grow to 150 players with the South & East region merging for the first time. It will attract the regions’ leading professionals and some top names such as Simon Khan, Oliver Fisher, Raymond Russell, Robert Coles, Mark Davis, Lloyd Kennedy, Steve Cipa to name just a few. The field of 150 players will be playing over 3 days with a cut. We look forward to another great tournament and welcome anyone who would like to watch some great golf.

However, the highlight of every summer comes in the shape of the four-day West Essex Festival of Golf, which kicks off in August using the four ball better ball format featuring men’s, ladies, seniors and mixed competitions. We have a great reputation for our high value prizes and superb catering before, during and especially after the golf. You will find details of upcoming events on our website, www.westessexgolfclub. co.uk, together with information about how you can reserve your place.

wildlife at the west

S

ituated on the edge of Epping Forest and further surrounded by farmland and grazing fields, West Essex is home to a great variety of species. Many animals, reptiles and insects live on the course, such as rabbits, squirrels and foxes. Over the years we have spotted two types of snake, the adder and grass snake, while bats, moles, stoats, dragonflies and a variety of butterflies have made the course home.

Deer have become a regular visitor to the course and there is a steady feed of bees, wasps and hornets in the hard clay areas. Birds are by far the most numerous to visit ‘The West’ and there have been spotting’s of robins, woodpeckers, skylarks, tree creepers and nuthatches in recent years.

If you are unlucky enough to put your ball in the water during your round you may have the chance to see some of the species that live above and below the surface. Look out for swans, herons, gadwalls, wigeons and much more. Next time you head out for a round we hope you can enjoy watching out for our visitors and they can enhance your time on the course.
