Estamos lejos del movimiento de pueblos y ciudades, tenemos una planta solar de electricidad que nos proporciona luz algunas horas de la noche, para cocinar juntos, si quieres, nuestros platillos típicos y compartirlos en la cena.

Y dos horas de nuestro hostal se encuentra uno de los teleféricos más largos del mundo, desde donde puedes admirar la belleza de la barranca del Cobre en toda su magnitud.

We are moving away from towns and cities, we have a solar power plant that gives us some light at night, cooking together, if you like our dishes and share them over dinner. The night is yours, and you live under a

sky so close you never imagined.

If we go through an hour of dirt in my old truck, we arrived in San Rafael, the largest urban center in the area. There you can stock up and buy Tarahumara crafts and visit its attractions.

There are good restaurants and scenery worth visiting.

And two hours of our hostel is one of the world’s longest cable car, where you can admire the beauty of the canyon in all its magnitude.

A la parte de la Sierra Madre Occidental que se localiza en Chihuahua se le llama Sierra Tarahumara, por el grupo indígena que lo habita.

Es un territorio de 60,000 kilómetros cuadrados, escarpado y contrastante. Las altas montañas son atravesadas por ríos que han formado espectaculares desfiladeros de gran profundidad llamados Barrancas del Cobre. Son seis sus cañones principales, con una profundidad media de 1,700 msnm: Candameña, Batopilas, Sinforosa, del Cobre y Urique; además de Huápoca, Choruyvo, Oteros, Chínipas, Septentrión y Tararecua que son más pequeños y se unen a los grandes, formando un laberinto de 16 mil kilómetros de espectaculares desfiladeros en la roca volcánica. El conjunto es el más profundo de América, más que el Cañón del Colorado en Arizona.

Viajar por la Sierra Tarahumara es una experiencia inolvidable para personas de espíritu

aventurero. Las enormes extensiones de bosque invitan a detenerse en algún mirador al lado de la carretera a disfrutar la tranquilidad que brinda la naturaleza.

Desde esos miradores es posible ver alguno de los cañones que integran un conjunto de espectaculares formaciones geológicas llamadas Barrancas del Cobre que se despliegan en un área de casi 26 mil kilómetros cuadrados de bosque de pino-encino.

La sierra Tarahumara está ubicadas en México, en el norteño estado de Chihuahua, fronterizo con los estados norteamericanos de Nuevo México y Texas.

Tarahumara es el nombre de uno de los cuatro grupos que habitan la sierra de Chihuahua: pimas, guarojíos, tepehuanes y rarámuris. El rarámuri «el de pies corredores» es el más numeroso de ellos. Su población se calcula entre los 75 mil.

Tienen autoridades y leyes propias. El gobernador imparte justicia con el auxilio de un puñado de hombres; los domingos, en audiencia pública, se tratan sus problemas. Se castigan con rigor el adulterio y el robo, por el cual sienten repugnancia. Por votación nombran sus autoridades.

Las faltas graves las someten a las autoridades mestizas, para lo cual el gobernador es el enlace entre su pueblo y las instituciones «blancas».

En torno al templo, el jueves de Semana Santa se reúnen para dar inicio a la mayor celebración pagano-cristiana del pueblo rarámuri, con ritos ancestrales, procesiones y música de violines y tambores; danzantes de piel pintada con tierras de colores y lodo blanco, armados de lanzas coloridas. Portando máscaras de ancianos con largas barbas de fibras vegetales, dos bandos entablan una lucha que culmina con el sacrificio de un Judas a golpes de vara, entre las burlas y los insultos de la concurrencia. El tesgüino, bebida

elaborada con maíz germinado y fermentado, acompaña y añade euforia a la celebración.

Ante alguna amenaza natural, los tarahumaras plantan una cruz –su único símbolo de veneración, sin relación con la cruz cristiana)– en el patio de la casa, y bailan el yúmare, danza colectiva de hombres y mujeres entre cantos monótonos y el sonido rítmico de guajes rellenos de semillas.

Los tarahumaras se reúnen el Sábado de Gloria en una competencia que llaman mamoaca: dos grupos, en ágil carrera, patean una pelota de madera por un circuito accidentado, entre lomas y arroyos, y que sobrepasa con frecuencia los 50 kilómetros. La carrera se desarrolla sin descanso; a lo largo de la ruta van cayendo de fatiga muchos de los competidores. Las mujeres juegan al yagual, deporte que consiste en ir empujando con una vara, también en carrera, un pequeño aro forrado de estambre de lana.

En diciembre celebran dos grandes fiestas: el día 12, día de la Virgen de Guadalupe, y la Noche Buena, el 24. En el templo se baila la Pascola, entre cánticos, violines y maracas. Varios toretes, regalados por miembros de la comunidad, son sacrificados para preparar el tónare: parten al animal y lo vacían en ollas donde

se cuece hasta formar una masa espesa que comen sin sal, acompañada con tortillas de maíz.

Because of its isolation, the Tarahumara have preserved over the centuries, a purity of blood and culture perhaps more than any other indigenous group in Mexico.

Although most live in the Sierra Tarahumara, there are numerous groups in the cities of Juarez and Chihuahua, where they have moved in search of work.

They live in small communities, consisting of several huts occupied by families of parents, children and grandchildren.

They are dedicated to growing corn, beans, squash, peas, as they have for centuries.

It is believed that when the Spanish arrived, in the region lived in settlements. The invasion caused enormous conflict, as the missionaries tried to group them around the Missions founded with the intention

of catechize and serve as a labor mines and haciendas. Tarahumara people rejected this way of life and destroyed 20 Missions and fought for their territories during the seventeenth century. Being defeated decided to retreat to more remote areas of the highlands, where actually they preserve their culture.

Because of its isolation, the Tarahumara have preserved the purity of blood and culture over the centuries, perhaps more than any other indigenous group in Mexico. Peaceful eternal migrants enjoy an excellent physical strength. Patients turn to traditional healers or sorcerers to remove the disease from the patient suctioning it with the mouth. Women are not required to deliver aid, and rejoins the everyday life the day after the delivery.

They have their own laws and authorities based in the main towns. On sundays, the governor (Síriamae) dispenses justice with the help of a handful of men, in a public hearing, where they treat their problems.

They punish hardly adultery and theft, for which they feel disgust. They elect the authorities by a vote. Serious offenses subject them to the mestizo authorities, for which the Siríame is the link between his people and the mestizo institutions.

Although quiet, lonely and isolated, the rarámuri is friendly and ceremonious. He does not like visitors, but is generous and share his food. The tarahumara don’t visit friends or family if he is not invited, The visit only occurs if there is a very important reason.

El hostal de Guitayvo se encuentra a 1,700 msnm, enclavado en un bosque de pino-encino. El lugar es precioso, tranquilo y por las noches se puede contemplar un increíble cielo azul con miles de estrellas; en el día el paisaje es espectacular porque en este lugar la barranca de Urique se une con la barranca del Cobre.

Durante el día lo más recomendable es caminar por los senderos que han diseñado los tarahumaras para admirar los paisajes; se pueden ver guacamayas, cotorras serranas, guajolotes, trogones, tecolotes, lechuzas, correcaminos, codornices, águilas, golondrinas... Uno de los senderos conduce del hostal a un mirador desde donde se observa la barranca de Urique y al fondo el río; cualquier persona con condición física regular puede hacer el recorrido.

Los de espíritu más aventurero y buena condición física pueden hacer una caminata al fondo de la barranca, donde hay pesca.

El recorrido de ida y vuelta es de 4 días y en el trayecto es posible

La construcción y manejo del hostal lo realizan indígenas tarahumaras de la comunidad de Guitayvo, agrupados en una sociedad de producción rural, como una manera de diversificar sus actividades económicas de manera sustentable, pues han respetado el entorno.

Las festividades más importantes en la comunidad se relacionan con las actividades agrícolas, el día de San Isidro Labrador (15 de mayo) siembran y el 29 de septiembre, –día de San Miguel–, celebran la cosecha de maíz, frijol y ejotes.

The Guitayvo hostel is located more than a mile above sea level, nestled in a pine-oak forest along the Urique Canyon.

Trips During the day you can walk the trails that tarahumara have designed to admire the scenery. You can see macaws, parrots, turkeys, trogones, owls, roadrunners, quail, eagles, swallows... One path leads to a viewpoint where you look at the Urique Canyon and the river on the bottom. Anyone with regular physical condition can make the trip.

The more adventurous spirit and good physical condition can, with a guide to hike to the bottom of the canyon, where you can fish for catfish and camping. The round trip is 4 days and the way it is possible to find birds, squirrels, coyotes

The hostel is built and managed by Tarahumaran indians from Guitayvo community, grouped in a society of rural production as a way to diversify their economic activities sustainably, because they have respected the environment.

With the hosts you can to prepare traditional food of the Tarahumara: corn tortillas, beans, mushrooms, and flower of the maguey, and you can go together look at the field. You also can to learn to make sandals or traditional tarahumara dress.

The most important celebrations in the community relate to agricultural activities: San Isidro Labrador day (May 15) and San Miguel day (September 29), tarahumara celebrate the harvest of corn, beans and green beans.

Cómo llegar Para llegar a Guitayvo existen varias opciones, la primera es viajar en el único tren de pasajeros de México, el Chepe, desde la ciudad de Chihuahua hasta la estación de San Rafael, donde los anfitriones Teodoro y Rafaela pueden ir por ustedes para trasladarlos al lugar.

Otra opción es llegar en camioneta; de la ciudad de Chihuahua se dirigen al oeste del estado para tomar la autopista de doble

carril a Cuauhtémoc (100 kms), de ahí toman la carretera a La Junta, luego a Creel y a San Rafael (208 kms), pasando este poblado siguen rumbo a Batopilas, después de 6 kms. se desvían a la izquierda por la terracería que va a Cuiteco, y recorren 18 kms. para llegar a la comunidad en unos 50 minutos. Este camino tiene partes difíciles y en mal estado, porque para construir algunos tramos de esta terracería se tuvo que romper la roca de la montaña; se recomienda viajar en vehículo de doble tracción o muy alto.
