Breakfast at Tiffany’s

“Nothing very bad could happen to you at Tiffany’s”, said Audrey Hepburn with her elegant fragility in a scene from the classic film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. When evoking this 1961 classic, the collective memory is overwhelmed by the powerful glamour of a time long past. Audrey looked ethereal in the gown exclusively designed for her by Givenchy. From then on, the bond established between them was so strong that the actress became the designer’s muse.

he image of Audrey wearing that elegant haute couture jet-black satin evening gown is now part of cinematic history. The floorlength sheath skirt is slit on one side; the fitted bodice is closed at the front with an open back that leaves uncovered the shoulder blades and is closed by a semicircular piece of fabric; in the film by Blake Edwards, the actress accompanies the outfit with a pair of elbow-length black gloves, a pearl necklace, a white shawl, her hair gathered in a diamond tiara, a long black cigarette holder, and huge sunglasses. Givenchy made three identical dresses for the shooting, in case any of them got damaged. Audrey became one of the great brand ambassadors for the 5th Avenue jewellery store, together with the famous yellow diamond found in the Kimberley mine in South Africa. The company’s gemmologist George Kanz cut it to maximize its brilliance and turn it into a unique piece of 128.54 carats and 80 facets, 22 more than the standard ones. Some years later, for a Christmas advertising campaign, a window designer placed the diamond in the hands of a floating gold wire angel. The light reflected from the jewel could be seen from across the street. The gemstone has only left the store twice, one occasion being when Hepburn wore it during the promotion of the film. Givenchy readapted the black fourreau, also known as ‘little black dress,’ created by Chanel in the late 20s and early 30s, and made it foot-long. In the hands of the French designer, the black cocktail gown with a pearl necklace became synonymous with new luxury and international lifestyle. Subsequently, designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin, Zac Posen, Prada, and Stella McCartney have contributed to perpetuate the legendary black dress.

Audrey would have never imagined she would become such a media phenomenon. The author of the novel, Truman Capote, wanted the film to be starred by his friend Marilyn Monroe who, in turn, was to be directed by John Frankheimer. However, the producers imposed their will and eventually casted Audrey for the part, and she suggested Blake Edwards to direct the film. Edwards later married the great Julie Andrews, the star of ‘The Sound of Music’. But problems were not over: Patricia Neal and George Peppard were on very bad terms during the shooting.

Without any doubt, Audrey was one of the greatest fashion icons for women worldwide. In contrast to the sensuality and eroticism of other, more “ethnic” celebrities like Sophia Loren or Gina Lollobrigida, Hepburn opted for simpler, wearable designs and androgynous items like flat masculine-cut or square-toed shoes; ballet flats in different colours; black sweaters and, especially, the Capri pants, subsequently borrowed by another huge fashion icon of the sixties, Jackie Kennedy. Both of them set the trend also with kerchiefs tied around the head, shawls in different shades, gabardine trench coats, pearls as a symbol of simple luxury – as in the famous image of John Kennedy Jr. playing with his mother’s necklace –, and the huge sunglasses to add mystery and to avoid being recognized.

Hepburn’s characteristic fragility was the feature most favoured by her fetish designers: Givenchy, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, and Gucci, whose prints she wore like no other. She was a trendsetter for the ladies of the time with her stylish square fringe, her basket purse, boots, maxi coats and different 70s hippie styles; and she even set trend with pets, making Yorkshires fashionable. Nowadays, these little dogs can be seen all around big cities inside little baskets or bags and accessorized with little bows or knitted coats.
