ith the Bugatti EB 16.4 Veyron “Pur Sang”, the company is continuing a tradition that produced icons like the T57 SC Atlantic and the numerous versions of the T41 Royale. Bugatti stands for a unique symbiosis of art, design and technology. This claim - manifested by company founder Ettore Bugatti and his son Jean - is reflected by the EB 16.4 Veyron Pur Sang, meaning “Pure Blood” in french, was presented in a world premiere in Frankfurt. Reduced to pure design and technology, a car was created here that again was not the means to an end, but in fact, had become a work of art in the sum of its parts. The EB 16.4 Veyron “Pur Sang” completely forgoes exterior paint. The idea for the EB 16.4 Veyron “Pur Sang” originated in the Bugatti factory in Molsheim. In what’s referred to as the studio where the high-tech components of the Veyron are assembled with painstaking precision. “When some of our designers were looking at production and once again became aware of the technical beauty of the structure,” says Achim Anscheidt, Head of Bugatti Design, “they came up with the idea of finishing the car in its pure material configuration. And that means without a coating of paint.”

The result is the “Pur Sang”, a study in which carbon and aluminum blend into a unique two-tone color, although no paint is involved. “Interestingly,” explains Anscheidt, “the pure materials used to underscore even more clearly the unified extremes of this car. Power combined with comfort, technical structure and organic bodies, light and dark. A closer look at the details reveals the techincal logic behind the stylish appearance. The innovatively designed monocoque carries all main structural components, including the W16 engine, the passenger compartment, the crumple zone and the suspension. It’s precisely this foundation determined by function, made of carbon fiber coated with clear paint, that lies open in view at the heart of the Veyron. The use of aluminum linings is equally forceful. Through the bold and muscular coverings of the wheels as a perfectly designed wing they lend the car its stature and the unique body sculpture. Polished to a mirror finish, these perfectly curved shapes make the facinating surface reflections visible that characterize the Veyron.” The balance of the visual impression is especially apparent when looking at the Bugatti from above. “These qualities,” says Achim Anscheidt, “merge into a unique appearance - almost like a painting by Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.” The outstanding representative of classical modern wanted to express the following in his art in the past century: “Beauty

across the line and harmony by the balance of relationships between lines, colors and surfaces. But only in the clearest and most powerful way.” A car can never be light enough. This principal applies all the more so for the Bugatti Veyron, because it was designed for a sporty high performance. This is why the battle for each pound of weight has been one of the big constants in the development history of the Bugatti. Special attention was paid

The monocoque is not just a rigid survival compartment, but can also ideally dissipate crash energy through elastic deformation. The main responsibility for this lies with the frames in which the carbon fiber monocoque is integrated - done in aluminum in the front and in combination of the carbon fiber and stainless steel at the back. The parts made of aluminum show the meticulousness and desire for perfection the Bugatti designers pursued in their work. And this doesn’t just apply to the body. The reason for this, is that aluminum is normally a recycled product, resulting in a variety of impurities in the alloys. This has no effect on the characteristics of the material, but on its appearance. After polishing and anodizing the aluminum there can be different degrees of gloss. However on the inside of the Veyron, where aluminum is used with the

material corresponding to the body shell: If you look closely, you can see that there are no differences in gloss here. Because a single, special alloy is used exclusively in the Veyron: AlMgSi 0.3 Vitral 42. No work is done with other alloys. The Bugatti EB 16.4 Veyron “Pur Sang” continues the legacy of the classic Bugatti sportscars: the “Atalante”, the Type 55, the Type 41 “Royale” – they all had a distinct and characteristic graphic signature. It is this precise division of performance components and body panelling that makes the EB 16.4. Veyron “Pur Sang” unique in the supercar world.

he Bentley Continental GTC is one of the most beautiful ways to drive “topless”. Nevertheless, Motorentechnik Mayer has a number of tuning enhancements which accentuate its strengths without distorting the vehicle’s character. For example, besides a compact attachment at the rear, no measures are implemented that might detract from the elegant appearance of the Continental GTC. MTM was not looking to alter the characteristic and unmistakable shape. To add the finishing touch, the Bavarian tuning specialist equips this British car with a set of large 21 inch Bimoto alloy wheels. However, a great deal more is going on beneath the bodywork of a Bentley Continental GTC from MTM. For this reason the Continental GTC is not only one of the most beautiful ways but also one of the fastest ways to drive “topless”. MTM supplies various performance kits. The spectrum ranges from optimized programming of the control electronics through to the complete conversion of the engine unit. All the versions have been developed by MTM on its proprietary dynamometers and thoroughly tested in road and racing use. Five hundred and sixty bhp as standard and a top speed of 197 mph should supply more than enough power for most highways. But MTM always aspires to the maximum. In an initial power class, MTM boosts the power of the 12 cylinder engine by recalibrating the engine electronics to 635 bhp and the torque to an impressive 575 lb/ ft. With the second performance kit, MTM conjures up to 650 bhp out of this large 6-liter W12 engine, which then generates a staggering 586 lb/ft. with ease instead of the already impressive

When it comes to suspension systems, Bentley has always drawn on unlimited resources. Nevertheless, to lend this highperformance car a sportier look, MTM is offering an electronically lowered suspension by means of a complex reprogramming of the software. In this regard, the calibration developed in Nardo and Hockenheim ensures a maximum level of ride comfort and the necessary residual spring travel is retained by the solution offered by MTM. The sportier look obtained by lowering the suspension harmonizes perfectly with the MTM “bimoto” wheel rims, which MTM supplies for the front and rear axle in the dimension 10.5” x 21” ET40 LK 5 x112 in the variants “Diamond Cut” and “shiny silver”. Needless to say, MTM also supplies the rims as a complete set of wheels. They are combined with Dunlop tires in the size 285/30. The MTM alloy rim has been developed to ensure the problem-free fitting of the MTM sports braking systems. MTM is currently working on performance kit for the latest Bentley model, the GT Speed, preparing a power upgrade resulting in 750 hp. This power should make a top speed of 211 mph possible!

helby Supercars (SSC), manufacturer of the ultra high-performance Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo, set the new “World’s Fastest Production Car” with an average top speed of 256.15 mph. Confident of the 1183 hp vehicle’s abilities, SSC set out to validate their top speed claim in accordance with the strict guidelines set by Guinness World Records. Among other requirements, in order to meet Guinness’ approval, a vehicle testing for the top speed record must drive down the course, turn around, and make a second pass in the opposite direction within one hour. The vehicle’s official “top speed” is calculated by averaging the top speeds of each pass in order to negate any favorable road or weather conditions. On a temporarily-closed 2 lane stretch of public highway in Washington State, the Ultimate Aero posted a top speed of 257.41 mph on its first pass and 254.88 mph on its return pass, yielding a new top speed record: a staggering 256.15 mph.

The data, collected by Dewetron’s world-renowned GPS tracking system, will be verified by Guinness before the Ultimate Aero is officially crowned the “World’s Fastest Production Car.” This breaks the current official record held by the Koenigsegg CCR at 242 mph by 11.83 mph and the Bugatti Veyron’s unofficial speed of 253 mph by 3.11 mph. SSC’s high-speed durability and aerodynamic test runs started in March on a 12-mile stretch of Highway 93 in Elko County, Nevada. After the scouting team discovered a more appropriate test site testing moved to open roads in SSC’s home state of Washington. Unlike these previous tests, which encompassed various durability trials of the Ultimate Aero’s drivetrain and powertrain, today’s session was dedicated solely to determining the vehicle’s top speed capabilities. A recently repaved two-lane section of Highway 221 in Washington was ultimately selected for the task, though navigating the road’s

slight elevation changes and mid-way S-bend proved to be a challenge. Test driver Chuck Bigelow, 71 of Richland, WA, had to pass through the S-bend at a minimum of 210 mph in order to attain record speed during the following straightaway (with only 1.5 miles before braking was required); after the record-breaking run, Bigelow stated “if there was additional straight pavement on which to accelerate, the top speed would have been considerably higher and if anyone challenges your record there is tons left on the table”. Lack of a dedicated test site, which many of the larger automotive manufacturers have at their disposal, was just one of the many obstacles in SSC’s way. Led by founder and lead designer Jerod Shelby, the SSC design team spent the past seven years creating, engineering, and testing the Ultimate Aero. “From the beginning, we felt confident that the Ultimate Aero was first in its class. Despite being designed to run at redline for extended periods of time, the Ultimate Aero remains remarkably drivable. The proprietary twin-turbo V8 power plant retains excellent idle characteristics, and thanks to a drag coefficient of just .357, wind tunnel testing calculates the vehicle to be aerodynamically stable to speeds up to 273 mph.
