THIS MONTH IN LVIV EASTER FESTIVAL April 1–27 Easter may still be several weeks away, but starting from April 1st Leopolitans and guests of the city will have the chance to get into the spirit of the season by seeing some beautifully decorated eggs and learning about a centuries-old cultural art form as Lviv is set to host the annual Pysanky (decorated eggs) Festival from April 1–27. This year the traditional eggs will be substituted with egg-shaped figures made of flowers, branches, wood, polyester, chocolate, and even air balloons. The festival will be located at various city landmarks throughout the city as event organizers hope to encourage festivalgoers to see the best sites that Lviv has to offer. The highlight of the event will be the exhibition of all of the unusual pysanky made from the different materials together under one roof. The beautiful eggs, featuring traditional Ukrainian motifs decorated by hand, make for an integral part of Easter celebrations in Ukraine. With Orthodox Easter taking place on April 20, Ukrainians from all around the country will indulge in the ancient tradition of decorating eggs together with their families. LYAPIS TRUBETSKOY IN CONCERT

April 6th at 19:00, “Ukraine” Sports Palace (18 Melynka St.)

Renowned Belarussian group Lyapis Trubetskoy will give a live show on April 6th to promote their new album “Matryoshka” that was released on March 1st 2014. The internationally-acclaimed Lyapis Trubetskoy was created in 1990. Their most well-known hits include: Zelenoglazoye Taksi (Green-Eyed Taxi), V Platye Belom (In a White Dress), Yabloni (Apple Trees), Capital, and Au. Midway through their career the group shed their pop-star sound in favour of music that became known more for its social and political satire. Today, Lyapis Trubetskoy fills venue after venue in Ukraine, Russia, and other Eastern countries, conquering audiences with both their older pop hits as well as their newer, heavier punk music. The front man himself, along with the band’s unique style, gets punk lovers energized through jumping, singing, and dancing, while still maintaining an enviable pop following. In 2009 they won the RAMP (Russian Alternative Music Prize) for Best Alternative Band. Wild as punks and subtly politically incorrect, the group never misses a chance to poke fun of even the most dogmatically-held taboos. Contagious rock melodies tinged with punk, together with lyrics that are riven with dark humour, have charmed even the most ardent critics of Western music who, until now, have rarely given Eastern European rock music a second thought. Tickets range from 120–250 UAH. For more information, please call: (093) 000-0791 or visit webpage www.karabas.com

EXPLORING Lviv

Lviv’s treasures

of danish sculptor A

mong Ukrainian cities, Lviv stands alone as a place where one can find important architectural landmarks of all kinds of styles representing many different eras standing right next to each other. Works from many recognized architects and artists can be found decorating churches, adorning art galleries, or specially displayed in one of our many museums. For example, one can just as easily find some of the splendid Baroque works of 18th-Century sculptor Johann Geog Pinsel at the Museum of Sacral Baroque Sculptures as it is to see the Neo-Classical treasures of Bertel Thorvaldsen – one of Denmark’s best known artists. Thorvaldsen, living in early 19th-Century Rome, is one of the most important European representatives of Neo-Classical sculptural art. Thorvaldsen was born in Copenhagen to poor parents in the late 18th-Century. The young boy entered Copenhagen’s Art Academy at just 11 with an unusually bright talent and learned the craft of sculpting for the next 12 years. Soon after he was lucky enough to travel to Rome as the Academy’s scholar to be further educated for another three years. At the time, Rome was the cultural centre of Europe and attracted art collectors from across Europe that could afford works in marble or bronze. And so the stars aligned for the talented Bertel, and after receiving numerous orders he ended up staying in Rome to become one of Europe’s best known artists. He is probably best known for his sculptures working with motifs from Classical mythology, such as Venus, Mercury, Cupid, or Psyche. He is also renowned for sculpting monuments of important historical figures, such as Pope Pius VII (a grave monument in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome) and Jozef Poniatowski (an equestrian statue in Warsaw). Thorvaldsen also crafted large orders for Denmark, of which the most famous are the statues of Christ and the Apostles (in Vor Frue Kirke – Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen). Over time, he gained more and more employees and at the height of his career had no less than five

26

studios in Rome. His works can be found all across Europe, including two here in Lviv – the Monument to Countess Jozefa Dunin-Borkowska and the Gravestone of Poniński's Children. Built in the 18th-Century, the Dominican Cathedral is a remarkable example of Baroque architecture and certainly one of the most interesting relics at the Cathedral is the Gravestone of Countess Jozefa Dunin-Borkowska. While the grave of the Countess can be found at Lviv’s Lychakiv Cemetery, her famous gravestone – crafted by Thorvaldsen in 1816 – can only be found on display at the Dominican Cathedral. The Gravestone of Poniński's Children In the early 17th-Century, in the small town of Chervonohorod, a local castle was built as a seat of the Danilowicz family. By 1778, Prince Karol Poninski acquired the castle – nearly in ruins – from the Habsburgs and had it demolished. He built a new princely residence in its place and his daughter, Helena Poninski, inherited it. It was she that in 1835 had Thorvaldsen craft a marble gravestone to commemorate the tragic death of her children. By 1842 Thorvaldsen had completed the work and the gravestone was placed in the Palace Chapel of Poninski’s castle at Chervonohorod. Chervonohorod declined in importance during the 19th-Century and its population was reduced to just 500 by the time of 1939’s ‘September Campaign’. During the Soviet times the Poninski Palace was dismantled, save from the two towers, and Chervonohorod was even removed from the map of the Ukrainian SSR. The site became a city of ghosts and ruins. We have Lviv Art Gallery director Boris Voznitsky to thank for bringing back to life the forgotten work of this talented sculptor. During one of his archeological expeditions to the ruins of the castle, Voznitsky and his team came across the gravestone, which they brought back to Lviv for analysis. After restoration, the marble gravestone was put on display at the Lviv Art Gallery.

5 Reasons

Why Shevchenko is Still Cool Lviv Today Recognizes Ukraine’s ‘Poet-in-Chief’ on the 200th Anniversary of his Birth

I

t is impossible to live in Ukraine and not know Taras Shevchenko. To be honest, it’s practically impossible to live in this country and not see Taras Shevchenko on a daily basis. For Ukrainians, he remains a constant presence; a common thread throughout their lives much like an old friend or a wise uncle. For tourists and expatriates though, little is known about the man other than he wrote poems and every town in Western Ukraine has a statue that bears his likeness. So, in honour of the anniversary of our national poet’s birthday, Lviv Today looks at 5 reasons why the man is still revered in Ukraine and around the world 200 years after his birth.

impressed, and sentenced Shevchenko hard time in a Siberian prison – forbidding him from even writing or painting. He spent the next decade in prison and wasn’t released until years after the tsar’s death. A condition of his release was that he was forbidden to travel to his beloved homeland, although he did make it back once more before his death. He was promptly detained and sent back to St. Petersburg, where he lived out the rest of his days. His life work – his poems, writings, and paintings – are considered to be the foundation for modern Ukraine literature and language and his themes are considered to have inspired the modern Ukrainian consciousness. 2. He’s Intellectual

1. He’s the Father of Ukraine Shevchenko is often considered the Father of Ukraine. Not really in the same sense as say George Washington in the USA or Vladimir Lenin in the USSR, who used politics and revolution to birth their nations, but more in the sense of defining and expounding a national consciousness. His works derived from his own extraordinary (and well-known) story: he was born as a poor and illiterate surf and found his break when a local churchman taught him to read and his owner noticed his artistic abilities. After an artist friend purchased his freedom, Shevchenko began to life the high life – studying, painting, and writing all the day (including his most famous collection of poems – Kobzar). He returned to Ukraine and travelled the land extensively to collect folkloric and ethnographic materials. After meeting with his serf friends and family, Shevchenko returned a changed man. His writings and paintings took on a more political tone, often at the expense of the tsar and the imperial system. One famous example is how he uses the allegory of a Russian officer impregnating a beautiful Ukrainian girl before abandoning her to represent Russia’s imposition of serfdom on Ukraine. When the tsar read his works he was not

So you know it that he’s a poet. And you now know he’s a writer and painter too. But did you know that he was also a talented folklorist, ethnographer, artist, and a pioneer in the field of etching? In addition to his many talents, he was a recognized public and political figure. Shevchenko has long been recognized for his greatness – even while he was alive. His first biography was published in Poland just one year after his death. Certainly Ukraine has long recognized his brilliance. After all, it is estimated that there are over 1200 Shevchenko statues throughout Ukraine, including on Lviv’s aptly-named Prospekt Svoboda (Independece Street). Ukrainians have come up with all kinds of manners to honour their hero-poet, including: naming a cruise ship after him, and a Kyiv metro station; gracing the 100 UAH bill with his image; naming one of Ukraine’s oldest and most reputable universities in his honour; bestowing a national arts prize in his honour; a national arts prize is named after him; even an asteroid was named after him (Kobzar 2427). Yet it’s not just Ukrainians that know how to honour the intellectual giant. 3. He’s Famous Worldwide From his monument in downtown Washington to his statues in St. Petersburg and across Russia; from a street named after him in New York City to his memorial in a Parisian park; from his likeness at Ukraine Square in Brazil to a Romanian high school named in his honour, Shevchenko is well-known and honoured all around the world. One of the themes of his poetry – for the oppressed to stand up to their oppressors – has long been recognized by revolutionary groups, while his impact on Ukrainian LVIV TODAY | March 2014

Lviv OPINION language and literature has made him an icon among Ukrainian diaspora groups worldwide. Many organizations and foundations throughout the diaspora have been set up in his name to either promote his works or to honour them. In addition, it’s likely just as easy to find a Shevchenko street or statue in North America as it is in small town Ukraine. There are even cities named after him in Canada and Kazahstan. Even UNESCO – the United Nations’ branch that is responsible for promoting and protecting culture – has invited the world to celebrate with Ukraine to mark the 200th anniversary of Shevchenko’s birth. The organization notes that events are planned to mark the occasion in, coincidentally, 200 countries around the world. 4. He’s Still Cool Don’t think that Ukraine has forgotten to mark the momentous anniversary of their hero’s 200th birth. The government has marked 2014 as ‘The Year of Taras Shevchenko’ and has a bevy of events planned to mark the occasion. The events kicked off with a 200th anniversary logo contest – won by a children’s art teacher from a small town in the Ternopil Oblast. The winning design, which netted the man 20,000 UAH, depicts a young Shevchenko above a stylized signature and the number 200. Other events tied to the celebrations include: the release of a 6-volume Shevchenko encyclopedia, the release of an education video series about his life and works, an international Shevchenko conference, renovations of the Shevchenko museums in Kaniv and Kyiv, and an international festival of choirs in Kaniv. In fact, the Shevchenko National Preserve near Kaniv, a park containing Shevchenko’s grave and a museum, is really the place to see in 2014. Plenty of exhibits, exhibitions, and events will be hosted there to honour Ukraine’s national bard. The anniversary itself, on March 9th, would have been a party had earlier events not soured the mood at the Maidan…

5. He’s Still Relevant Shevchenko’s works still enjoy immense popularity and relevance even 200 years after his birth. Children are taught to recite his poems from their first days in school and study them right through university. More than just a father to Ukrainian language and literature, Shevchenko’s poems still hold special appeal to the Ukrainian consciousness. He remains one of the few national figures with the ability to draw people from all areas of Ukraine together. Perhaps that was one reason for his immense popularity during the initial stages of the EuroMaidan protests. Yet by the time the Maidan celebrated the anniversary on March 9th, the image of Shevchenko at the Maidan had taken on a whole new relevance. Just days earlier Russia had occupied Crimea, reminding many Ukrainians of times past – distant, and not-so-distant. Poems read at the square, such as the popular Kavkaz, acquired a whole new meaning. The poem, invoking the poetic image of Prometheus to symbolize the eternal spirit of heroism, calls on all oppressed nations “from the Moldovan to the Finn” to stand up to Russia’s tyranny. Truly, there hasn’t been a time in Ukraine’s brief post-Soviet history that Shevchnko’s works have been more relevant. In the words of EuroMaidan martyr Serhiy Nigoyan, himself quoting from Shevchenko’s Kavkaz: “And glory, mountains blue, to you, In ageless ice encased! And glory, freedom’s knights, to you, Whom God will not forsake. Keep fighting – you are sure to win! God helps you in your fight! For fame and freedom march with you, And right is on your side!

SHEVCHENKO POETRY ON THE RETRO TRAIN Lucky passengers were able to take the special route retro train L 3535 from Lviv’s main railway station on March 5th in honour of the 200th anniversary of the birthday of legendary Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. Guests on the retro train enjoyed the picturesque landscapes of Znesynnya Park while being serenaded by Shevchenko’s brilliant poetry.

FESTIVE CELEBRATIONS OF T. SHEVCHENKO ANNIVERSARY The Lviv Art Palace hosted a series of creative events dedicated to iconic Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko on March 7th. The celebrations included concerts, literarymusical recitals, and several exhibitions. Maybe the most celebrated event was the personal exhibition of artist and architect Volodomyr Doroshenko, which showcased 60 paintings including 14 that were dedicated specifically to T. Shevchenko. Another interesting exhibition was “Lviv Artists: Following the Ways of Kobzar” that was created in 1997–2003. This joint exhibition featured local artists Orest Skop, Sergiy Mihnovskyy, Zenovyi Ketsalo, Oleksandr Krohmalyuk, and Evhen Manyshyn. The photoexposition by photographer Yosyp Marukhnyak was another popular event. The collection featured over 40 years of pictures of monuments dedicated to T. Shevchenko throughout Ukraine and in the Lviv Region in particular. The literary-musical composition “I Pray For You…” was another notable event of the festivities. This creative composition, directed by O. Gerasymenko and presented by M. Chumarna, was dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Taras Shevchenko museum.

OLYMPIC RECAP:

UKRAINE WINS FIRST GOLD SINCE 1994

F

rom the time former world bronze medallist cross-country skier Valentina Shevchenko, competing in her fourth Olympics, walked into Fisht Stadium in Sochi during the Opening Ceremonies with the Ukrainian flag to the rapturous welcome from the Russian fans, one could tell that the 22nd Olympic Winter Games would turn out to be something special for Ukraine. Led by our world class women’s biathlon team, the Ukrainian Olympic Committee had high hopes to end a 20-year gold medal drought and to put up a good showing in advance of the IOC’s decision to shortlist the 2022 Olympic bid cities (including Lviv) this summer. By the end of the spectacle, the Olympic Games in Sochi turned out to be memorable for the Ukrainian athletes … and not just because of the results in the events. Lugers Lead the Way; Semerenko Medals Early While the Olympics kicked off with the new Team Figure Skating event that saw Ukraine finish in 9th place, most Leopolitan Olympic fans were watching the lugers from Lviv compete during the first week. Lviv’s own Roman Zakharkiv and Oleksandr Oblonchyk finished a strong 17th in the men’s double event, while in the new mixed team event, the Ukrainian team, anchored by Lviv’s Andriy Kis in his

third Olympic Games, finished 11th. The highlight of week one was undoubtedly the bronze medal finish by Vita Semerenko. In an event where any one of the four Ukrainian women could have medalled, including sister Valentyna who finished 12th, it was Vita that came up with the performance to remember. Not missing a single shot, she narrowly missed out on silver by less than 2 seconds, guaranteeing Ukraine its first medal since 2006 in Turin, Italy and giving Ukrainian sports fans a reason to celebrate. mance at the Olympic Games in Sochi 2014". Our golden biathletes remembered those that gave their lives in Kyiv as well; reigning world champion Olena Pidhrushna at the press conference following their golden performance requested a minute’s silence to honour those that had perished.

Events in Kyiv threatened to overshadow the second week of events in Sochi, which saw most Ukrainian athletes complete their events against the backdrop of a revolution back home. Highlights included a 9th-place finish by former European champion Serhiy Semenov in the men’s individual biathlon and a career-best 6th-place finish for three-time Olympian Oleksandr Abramenko in the men’s aerials event. Those performances were just a precursor to what had to be the crowning moment of Ukrainian athletics at the 2014 Winter Games: the women biathlon team’s golden performance in the relay event. Their commanding performance, which saw them finish nearly 30 seconds ahead of 2nd-place Russia, was the first gold medal for Ukraine since Oksana Baiul won the 1994 women’s figure skat-

Based on her double-medal performance, making her Ukraine’s most decorated Winter Olympian of all-time, Vita Semerenko was honoured as Ukraine’s flag bearer at the Closing Ceremonies. Joining athletes from every other nation that competed, the diminished crew of Ukrainian athletes left in Sochi watched as the Olympic flag was handed over to the mayor of PyeongChang, South Korea – hosts

ing event and was the first time a nation other than Russia, Norway, or Germany had ever won the event. The win, as it were, came just days after scores were killed during the protests in Kyiv and on the same day that deposed former President Yanukovych fled the city. The events placed a great deal of stress on Ukrainian athletes still left to compete. After the International Olympic Committee refused Ukrainian athletes’ requests to wear black armbands to honour those who died in Kyiv, athletes responded to the events in different ways. Many athletes that had already competed – nearly half of the entire team – decided to skip the Closing Ceremonies and return home. Some athletes, including cross-country skiers Marina Lisogor and Kateryna Serdyuk as well as downhill skier Bogdana Matsotska, refused to compete. As Matsotska stated, “In solidarity with the fighters on the barricades of the Maidan, and as a protest against the criminal actions made towards the protesters, the irresponsibility of the president and his issues with the government, we refuse further perfor-

of the next Winter Games in 2018. Olympic fans in Lviv were sure to be thinking of what that ceremony could look like in four years, with the same mayor handing over the Olympic flag to Lviv. Visions of watching the Lviv’s lauded lugers compete on the first-ever urban Winter Games luge track in central Lviv danced in the minds of some, while others dreamt of the thrill of watching Ukraine’s national hockey team take on the superstars from Russia with the hopes of completing their own “Miracle on Ice”. But most dreamed of watching our biathlete heroines win the gold medal at home to the wild cheers of an adoring nation. “Great proof of how sport can unite the nation”, remarked Ukrainian Olympic Committee President and polevaulting legend Sergey Bubka following the women’s gold medal performance and in reference to the tragic events in Kyiv the previous days. Here’s to hoping that we can all witness that occasion, eight years from now on the glistening slopes of the Carpathians, in a united Ukraine.

UKRAINE’S WINTER CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lviv was host to the Ukraine Winter Cycling Championships from February 13–17, which featured riders competing in track cycling in several different age categories. The cyclists competed in both individual and team races, scratch, the group races, and other events. Volodymyr Naboyshikov looked after the events as chief judge. Several athletes from Lviv saw strong showings at the Championships, including Sofia Kuznetsova (2nd in Women’s Team Pursuit), Vitaliy Pidkivka (2nd in Junior 3km Individual), and Roman Gladysh (2nd in Men’s Team Pursuit). The headline race of the championship ended up being the Men’s Team Pursuit event, which saw the team from Donetsk – Maksym Vasilyev, Volodymyr Dzhus, Vitaliy Popkov, and Ilya Klepikov – triumph.

BASKETBALL It has been a difficult month for basketball in Lviv. First, events across the country disrupted the majority of the league’s matches. While at one point it looked as though the league would be suspended, the Basketball Federation of Ukraine eventually ended up deciding to extend the season to make up for the missed games. However, the political uncertainty in the country played havoc with several teams in the league as a number of Americanborn players decided to leave the country, including Halychyna’s star defender Kendall Dykes. Dykes, was third in the league in scoring when he left. To make matters worse, big Belarussian forward Dmitriy Poleschuk – who had filled in the rebounding gap left after Vladan Vukosavlevych left the team in December – ruptured his Achilles tendon in the match against Budivelnyk. Needing to put together a serious winning streak in February/ March just to get into the playoffs, the personnel-ravaged Halychyna team limped to a 3-2 record, with wins coming over lowly DniproAzot (14th) and SC Kryvbas (12th), as well as 4th-ranked Odessa. The team failed to beat Mykolaiv (10th) and defending-champion Budivelnyk (3rd). Stepping up to fill the scoring and rebounding holes in the team was centre Yaroslav Lemyk with three double-doubles and twice leading the team in scoring. The team currently sits in 7th-place with a 11–10 record. Sitting 3 games out of a playoff spot with only 5 games remaining means postseason action for Halychyna will most likely have to wait until 2015. Be sure to catch your Poltitekhnika-Halychyna team in one of its last two games of the season: March 17th vs. Cherkassy Monkeys and April 1st vs. 1st-place Khimik Yuzhne. All games take place at Halychyna Sports Palace.

LVIV TODAY | March 2014

2015 EUROBASKET IN UKRAINE IN DOUBT IFinally, the turmoil across Ukraine has called into question whether Ukraine will be ready to host the EuroBasket Championship in 2015; a tournament of which Lviv is set to be a host city. Construction delays have been noted all over the country, while there are obvious security risks in both Kyiv and Odessa. “FIBA Europe fully understands the problems and issues that the organisers are currently facing because of the political instability in the country,” the governing body said in a press release. “FIBA Europe will continue to stay in close contact with them as well as continue to monitor the situation independently. ”As not a single one of the six venues is yet to be completed, there is a very real risk of the tournament being moved to another location. This would be a big blow to the future of Ukrainian basketball, just at the time when the Ukrainian National basketball team is set to participate in its first-ever World Basketball Championships this summer in Spain.

futsal Lviv’s “Energy” futsal team hosted Rivne’s “Kardinal” squad in a Ukrainian Futsal Championship match at the Halychyna Sports Palace on March 2nd. This Western Ukrainian derby is always a passionate and entertaining affair and the game lived up to its billing. Down with only seconds to play in the match, Lviv’s Legchanov and Pavlenko scored late to level the score at 2-2. The teams remain near equal in the standings and both have an excellent shot at making the playoffs. The next “Energy” match, set for April 5th, will see the team take on Lugansk’s “Lug. T.K.”

UKRAINE DRAWS SPAIN, BELARUS IN EASY EUROS 2016 QUALIFICATION DRAW While every team in Europe has an easier road to qualify for the EUROs 2016 tournament in France thanks to UEFA’s decision to expand the tournament from 16 to 24 teams, it will be difficult to imagine a much easier draw for the Ukrainian National football team. The Ukrainians, ranked 10th in Europe, should be able to take one of the two automatic qualification spots in Group C after being drawn together with Spain, Slovakia (25th in Europe), Belarus (37), Macedonia (43), and Luxembourg (47). The two games against Spain, still ranked #1 in the world, will give the Ukrainian squad their only chances to gauge their preparation for the big stage in France. Originally Gibraltar, the newest team recognized by UEFA, had been drawn into the group, but they were removed as Spain opposes the membership of Gibraltar in UEFA. The competition is set to begin in September as Ukraine plays host to Slovakia at Olympic Stadium in Kyiv. Ukraine is set to host Spain on 12-October-2015 in Kyiv. In other EUROs- related news, it appears that the turmoil in the country is having an impact on the chances of Kyiv or Donetsk to be chosen as one of the hosts for the EURO 2020 tournament, which is set to be hosted in cities across the continent. As Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Sergei Palkin told BBC, "The political situation in our country will influence (the decision) and therefore, to be honest, I do not think they will give us anything," he explained. "UEFA will not risk it. No one knows when the crisis will be finished."

Т.К." LVIV TODAY | March 2014

Ukrainian Paralympians Excel Despite Turmoil at Home

A

mid the backdrop of the host nation invading its territory before the 2014 Winter Paralympics even began, Ukrainian paralympians turned in a fine set of performances. When the Ukrainian Paralympic Committee decided against boycotting the competition, the athletes found small ways to voice their displeasure with events back home. Whether it was Ukrainian flagbearer and Nordic skier Myhaylo Tkachenko wheeling himself in alone at the Opening Ceremonies or it was one of several medal winners covering their medals with their hands during medal ceremonies, Ukrainian athletes struggled with competing at a competition hosted by an invading nation. It didn’t, however, prevent them from excelling; with one day left of competitions, Ukrainian athletes had taken home 25 medals, including five gold – good for 4th place overall. Ukrainians medalled in 19 separate events in cross-country skiing and biathlon. Gold medal winners included: Vitaliy Lukyanenko (2), Oleksandra Kononova, Grygorii Vovchynskyi, and Lyudmyla Pavlenko. Lukyanenko added a silver and bronze for a total of 4 medals, while Kononova added a silver and Oksana Shyshkova took 4 bronzes. Overall, 11 of 31 Ukrainian athletes medalled in Sochi. The strong performance in Sochi improved on Ukraine’s performance at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver that saw the team finish 5th with 19 medals.
