This Month In Lviv

The spirit of Christmas is coming to Lviv and bringing with it lots of hope and anticipation of a merry and (let’s hope) peaceful season. Now it’s time to take a break and just enjoy your time shopping, dining, and socializing. Christmas fairs will be scattered all around the old downtown square offering everything from sparkly Christmas tree decorations to the finest local confectionaries that will simply melt on your tongue. Explore your way through the holiday fairs that lure Leopolitans and guests of the city with their sweet aromas of natural soaps and perfumes, traditional Cossack honeys, and delightful doughnuts (pampuhy). Words do not do justice; you just need to see for yourself. There may be no better place on earth to enjoy the Christmas season than in Lviv, with its romantic charm, Christmas fairs, and festive festivals. One such festival is the ‘Blaze of the Christmas Star’, which renews an ancient Ukrainian tradition. Ukrainians used to make large (1.5-2 metre) Christmas stars – the main symbol of the festivities. This event will take place on January 7th at the Museum of Folk Architecture & Rural Life (1 Chernecha Hora St.) and on January 8th in the city centre (Rynok Square, Prospect Svobody, St. George Square). Another traditional Christmas event in Lviv is the ‘A Great Carol’ festival that takes place at the St. Eucharist Church (3 Museina Sq.) in January. This event is dedicated to presenting longstanding Ukrainian customs, songs, and carols in particular. Wouldn’t it be nice if you there was one place where you could find all of your beautiful Christmas gifts while escaping the shopping mall crowds? Then why not visit Lviv’s biggest Christmas Fair, which takes place from December 10th to January 20th along the pedestrian mall from the Opera & Ballet Theatre to the T. Shevchenko monument as well as on Rynok Square. Indulge in the ideal Christmas shopping experience while soaking in the warmth and beauty of the Lviv holiday experience while purchasing your gifts from an eclectic mix of goods where you’ll be sure to find something for everyone on your gift list.

РІЗДВЯНИЙ СЕЗОН У ЛЬВОВІ Як всім відомо, зима – це Новий рік і Різдво. Можна трохи розслабитись, відпочити в колі родини, навідати друзів і знайомих, з якими давно не бачились, безжурно пройтись магазинами, вуличними ярмарками, зазирнути в кнайпу чи цукерню... На різдвяних ярмарках в центрі міста можна знайти все, починаючи від блискучих ялинкових прикрас до найкращих кондитерських виробів, які просто тануть на язиці. Над імпровізованими прилавками здіймаються аромати гарячого шоколаду, глінтвейну, неодмінних шашликів і смажених ковбасок, традиційного козацького меду, усього, чим можна привабити туриста, який вже все бачив, чи навіть, поважного львів’янина. Жодними словами – сказаними, чи написаними не можна передати цієї святкової атмосфери, її просто треба відчути самому – й запам’ятати. Традиційно до уваги львів’ян та гостей міста - чимало цікавих заходів, як от фестиваль «Світло різдвяної зірки», на якому оживає давня традиція українців робити великі (1,5-3 метри) різдвяні зірки, які обертаються і, навіть, світяться. Фестиваль проходитиме 7 січня в Музеї народної архітектури та побуту (вул. Чернеча Гора, 1) і 8 січня в центрі міста (площа Ринок, проспект Свободи, площа св. Юра). Інший традиційний фестиваль "Велика коляда", на якому можна буде побачити відтворені старі українські звичаї, почути пісні й колядки пройде в січні в церкві св. Євхаристії (кол. домініканський собор). Увесь центральний проспект – від оперного театру до пам’ятника Т. Шевченкові, а також площа Ринок перетворюються у дні зимових свят у найбільший Різдвяний ярмарок Львова – з 10 грудня 2014 аж до 20 січня 2015. Мабуть, кожному вдасться знайти тут щось особливого для своїх близьких чи друзів, вже не кажучи про гостей міста з усіх усюд – з України та з усього світу – і поділитись своєю радістю і добрим настроєм зі знайомими й не знайомими і зберегти його на ввесь наступний рік.

Skating Returns to Rynok Square December – March, Rynok Square, near City Hall As skating is one of the most popular winter activities in Europe, Lviv has established its own tradition – the Rynok Square Rink. For the past 6 winters, this popular attraction is mounted right in the heart of the picturesque, UNESCOrecognized heart of our city. The central location attributes to a smaller rink, but the intimate atmosphere ensures the rink is fully of happy Leopolitans and romantic couples. Leopolitans and guests of the city will be able to enjoy this active open air activity from December until March. But don’t worry if it gets too warm, special high-tech freezing equipment is used to ensure that the ice will work even in temperatures as high as +15. The Rynok Square Rink will be open from 10:00 to 22:00 and the prices won’t break your budget either – from 60–80 UAH an hour. Don’t worry if you have never skated before or don’t have any skates; there is skate rental on site and the rink is supervised by an instructor that would be happy to help you learn how to enjoy this wonderful winter past time.

Lviv’s Pampuh (Donut) Fest January 7–9 , Rynok Square (North Side) Leopolitans and guests of the city with a sweet tooth will not want to miss Lviv’s Pampuh (Donut) Fest – one of the most original and colourful events on Lviv’s winter calendar – set to run January 7–9 on Rynok Square. Returning for the 8th consecutive year, this festival celebrates Leopolitans love of the fried, sugary dough with a competition of the deep-fried, battered treats in the heart of historical Lviv. Over a dozen of Lviv’s cafés and restaurants will put their very best pampuh recipes to the test, but only one will walk away with the honoured title of ‘Best Pampuh in Lviv’. Throughout the 3-day festival in Rynok Square, visitors of Donut Fest will have the chance to learn the history of pampuhs, a few tasty recipes, and of course, how to bake the beloved Christmas pastry. As part of this year’s Donut Fest programming, visitors will be treated to premium street theatre, children’s ensemble performances, several fun competitions, and many surprises. Ковзанка на Ринку Грудень - Березень, пл. Ринок (позаду Ратуші) Як відомо, у Європі головною міською розвагою взимку (якщо дозволяє погода і клімат) є ковзанки, тож і Львів не пасе задніх – щороку протягом останніх шести років у центрі міста, на площі Ринок встановлюють штучну ковзанку для дітей та дорослих. Спеціальне обладнання дозволяє користуватись цим задоволенням навіть за температури +15 С. Не надто великі розміри (30х40 метрів), відповідні до розмірів історичного центру міста, не впливають на постійне заповнення крижаного майданчика щасливими любителями активного відпочинку. Отож, з грудня по березень наступного року львів’яни та гості міста мають прекрасну можливість відчути радість руху під відкритим небом. Весела ковзанка працюватиме з 10:00 до 22:00 і навіть позичатиме ковзани з черевиками для тих, хто немає своїх або забув їх вдома. Ціни – в межах розумного – 60–80 грн. за годину. Malanka Festivities!

Malanka festivities, the annual Ukrainian New Year’s carnival featuring distinctive folk music and costumes, is set to take place across Ukraine on January 13–14, but is especially interesting in the village of Vashkivtsi (Chernivtsi Oblast). Traditionally the festivities begin on January 13th – New Year’s Eve according to the Julian calendar – and is a time when all manner of ghosts, goblins, bears, horses, and witches take to the streets in celebration. Officially, the festival commemorates the Feast of St. Melania, but it has as many faces as villages in Ukraine. One feature that is common to all festivities is young men donning masks and costumes going from house to house, having fun and making trouble. They tend to travel in packs and are led by a character known as the ‘Malanka’ – usually a young man dressed in drag to look as much as possible like a local girl he’d like to parody. Nowadays, these roving bands of merrymakers will visit nearly any home they stumble across, although the traditional custom was to only go to the houses of young, unmarried women. Malanka characters are pranksters at heart and while a crowd of characters performs for the members of the household, one performer secretly hides or misplaces household items. While between houses, the rowdy groups stop around bonfires and wander through towns mocking onlookers and each other. At the end of the night, all the performers gather for one large party. Bonfires can burn all night and, as part of the ancient tradition, frequently see spoiled masks burned and performers jump over the fire. On New Year’s Day, villagers gather in the town centre to watch a “bear fight” with young men dressed as the wild creatures battling to protect Malanka and preserve her chaste dignity.In some rural villages, women bake ritual bread called ‘malanka’ or ‘vasyl’ and the villagers visit their gardens to ask the trees to bring more fruit come spring. New Year’s Eve – the night of the Malanka celebration – is believed to be magical, where plants and understand human speech and animals have conversations with each other. Malanka celebrations, like so many other Ukrainian traditions, enhance the traveler’s experience and require visitors to step off the beaten tourist path and take the road less traveled into the mysticism that is rural Ukraine.

Свято Маланки відмічають 13–14 січня по всій Україні (а особливо в селі Вашківці Чернівецької області) веселим карнавалом, піснями та гучною музикою. Традиційно свято починається 13 січня (Новий рік за старим стилем) час, коли, за народними повір’ями, усяка нечиста сила, відьми та чорти виходять, щоб накапостити людям, і тому їх треба розігнати. Сама фігура “Маланки” та її оточення виглядають в кожному селі по-своєму. З настанням темряви, гурти молодиків, перевдягнених у власноруч зроблені найрізноманітніші маски й костюми, ходять від хати до хати – колядують та роблять збитки господарям. Той, хто перевдягнувся в “Маланку”, як правило, намагається пародіювати якусь конкретну дівчину, характерні риси її поведінки та вбрання. В наш час веселі колядники завітають майже до кожної хати, а колись звичай був ходити лише по хатах молодих, незаміжніх жінок. Справжня “Маланка” ніколи не обходиться без жартів, і поки натовп персонажів співає і танцює для господарів, хтось з них так заховає предмети домашнього вжитку, що їх потім тиждень будуть шукати. Блукаючи цілу ніч по селу колядники зігріваються біля вогнищ, і хто чим може. Наприкінці ночі всі сходяться навколо однієї великої ватри, в якій спалюють використані маски і перестрибують через вогонь, щоб пройти очищення. У перший день нового року, мешканці збираються в центрі села, щоб подивитися "Ведмежі бої", в яких хлопці, одягнені у вивернуті кожухи, зображають ведмедів і борються, щоб захистити Маланку від "нечистої сили". У деяких українських селах жінки печуть ритуальний хліб, що називається "Маланка" або "Василь" і йдуть з ним до саду просити дерева, щоб рясніше родили в наступному році. Під Новий рік, напередодні святкування "Маланки", в народі здавна вважають, що рослини і тварини розуміють людську мову і навіть самі можуть розмовляти. Свято "Маланки", як і багато інших українських традицій, дає нагоду мандрівникові побачити і зрозуміти більше, якщо вийти за межі стандартних маршрутів через великі міста з їх історичними пам'ятками та музеями, змінити маршрут в прямому й переносному значенні, краще відчути людей і цю землю, що зветься Україна.

On December 22, 2014 at Lviv Philharmonic Concert Hall Ukrainian-Austrian symphonic orchestra “K&K Philharmoniker” will perform concert featuring selection of compositions by Johann Strauss under the baton of its charismatic conductor Matthias Kendlinger. Born in 1964 in Austria, Matthias Georg Kendlinger first began receiving accordion lessons at the age of 5. From 1981 to 1994 Kendlinger appeared as a performing musician on stages throughout Europe. In 1994 he founded the private classical music marketing firm DaCapo in Kufstein. In 2002 he created his own symphony orchestra, the K&K Philharmonic and one year later he formed the K&K Opera Choir. On December 23, 2014 Lviväs opera and ballet theatre will host second concert featuring Strauss masterpieces, as conductor will come Austrian Georg Kugi. Born in the city of Villach, Austria, Georg Kugi received his first diploma as a flutist at the Klagenfurt Conservatory. Continuing his studies at the Vienna University of Music he finished his master in music education including flute and piano. From 1985 Georg Kugi was music director of the Bretterhaus Theatre, Vienna, the Young Austrian Music Theatre (with Menotti´s “Medium”) and took part in a production of the Vienna Chamber Opera. Since 2003 he has been holding the position of a principal conductor and artistic director of the four-nations-orchestra International Danube Philharmonic and since 2004 he has been working with DaCapo. K&K Philharmoniker – a group of seventy musicians who perform around 100 concerts each year at European concert halls such as Herkulessaal Münchner Residenz, Tonhalle Zürich, Konzerthаus Berlin, Wiener Musikverein and traditionally come to Lviv several times a year. Українсько-австрійський симфонічний оркестр "K & K Philharmo-niker" 22–23 грудня 2014 дає два концерти з творів Йоганна Штрауса. Перший концерт під керуванням диригента Маттіаса Кендлінгера, відбудеться у приміщенні Львівської філармонії 22 грудня. Маттіас Кендлінгер народився у 1964 році в Австрії, перші уроки гри на акордеоні отримав ще у 5 років. З 1981 по 1994 рік Кендлінгер виступав як музикант на сценах по всій Європі. У 1994 році він заснував приватну маркетингову фірму Dacapo в м. Куфштайн для популяризації класичної музики. У 2002 році він створив свій власний симфонічний оркестр K & K Philharmoniker, а рік потому заснував ще й K & K Opera хор. Другий концерт, диригентом в якому буде Георг Кугі відбудеться 23 грудня у Львівському театрі опери та балету. Георг Кугі народився в австрійському місті Філлах, свою першу музичну освіту флейтиста отримав у консерваторії м. Клагенфурт. Продовжив навчання у Віденському музичному університеті по класу флейти і фортепіано. З 1985 року Георг Кугі був музичним керівником Віденського театру Бреттерхаус, Молодого австрійської музичного театру і брав участь в постановках Віденської камерної опери. З 2003 року обіймає посаду головного диригента та художнього керівника Міжнародного оркестру Дунайської філармонії, а з 2004 року співпрацює з агентством Dacapo. Lviv’s young and talented singer Oksana Mukha invites Leopolitans and guests of the city to her “Christmas at the Opera” concert on January 13th at Lviv’s magical Opera & Ballet Theatre. The festive concert program will feature old-time folk songs, seasonal carols, and other holiday favourites. Oksana Mukha was born in Lviv and studied at the local Solomyia Krushelnitska music school. After graduating from the Lviv Music Academy in 2005, she released her first album – Halychanka – together with the Dudaryk Nazavzhdy art union. By 2010 she had released her first solo album – RE:SHETO – featuring creatively-arranged folk songs and classics. Soon after she was crowned champion of the Kvitka Cisyk International Vocal Competition of Ukrainian Romances. At the Christmas at the Opera concert, Mukha will showcase traditional folk songs, but in her own unique way. In each song, her rich voice will flow through the lyrics and resonate with each passing melody to deliver a truly unique Ukrainian acoustic experience. And – as a special bonus – the Yunist dance ensemble and Trembita Ukrainian choir orchestra are set to accompany the young singer. Ranging between upbeat and romantic, folk songs and religious carols, this concert program is sure to have a little something for everyone! You’re sure to love it! Lviv Hosts Rock Orchestra feat. Ukrainian Folk Instruments December 26th, 19:00, Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Lviv’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre is set to host a special rock orchestra concert featuring Ukrainian folk instruments on December 26th. Tango Remolino DJ FestivalF December 27th – January 7th, Hotel Dnistr (6 Mateyka St.) Leopolitan tango fans get ready – Lviv’s Hotel Dnistr is set to host a series of tango-flavoured events over 12 days this month as part of the 2014 Tango Remolino DJ Festival. The term “remolino” refers to the swirl or whirlwind of the dance. Several milongas (a place or event where a tango is danced), scheduled both during the day and at night, will feature some of the top DJs from throughout Ukraine and across Europe. Ukraine’s Alexandra Kotelnitskaya, Yuriy Cherenkov, Nick Shaforostoff, and Valentina Mitrieva will be featured alongside disc spinners from as far away as Argentina, Finland, and France. The prince of Ukrainian lyrical music – Lviv’s own Garik Krichevsky – will perform in Lviv this month with a special concert program dedicated to his 50th birthday celebration. This singer, composer, and Honoured Artist of Ukraine (2004), was also awarded the Lyrical Song of the Year awards in both 2004 and 2008. Born in Lviv in 1963, he began piano lessons by age 5 and had organized his first band at age 14, where he played bass guitar and wrote the songs. He graduated from the Lviv State Medical Institute and pursued his musical career while simultaneously working in an ambulance. He began to record his own CD’s by the late 80s and from 1992-94 he recorded his Kyivlyanka and Pryvokzalnaya albums in Germany. He returned to his motherland in 1995 to tour and recorded several subsequent albums, including among many others: The Streets of our City, Liberty, and Clouds. Krichevsky and his band frequently tour the USA, Canada, and Israel and regularly perform at concerts and events in Ukraine. У 1968 він почав вчитись грати на фортепіано в музичній студії і в 14 років організував свій перший музичний колектив, в якому грав на басгітарі і написав перші свої пісні. Після закінчення школи і Львівського медичного інституту, працював на "швидкій допомозі", одночасно граючи в різних музичних групах. В 1989 – 1990 роках Кричевський записав свої перші домашні концерти, які, щоправда, не збереглись. В 1992 – 1994 роках він записує альбоми "Киевлянка" і "Привокзальная". Тоді ж переїздить на постійне місце проживання до Німеччини, проте в 1995 році повертається в Україну, щоб виступати з гастролями. З 1995 по 2007 рік виходять його альбоми "Выходной", "Улицы нашего города", "Пальчики", "Свобода", "Родная", "Календарная Осень", "Облака" – всього Кричевський записав 10 альбомів. High Castle Autumn Art Exhibition Lviv’s Art Palace hosted its annual High Castle International Autumn Art Exhibition last month, gathering over 250 contemporary artists from across Ukraine and around the world. On display were more than 300 works of art, including: paintings, graphics, sculptures, ceramics, and textiles. Much of the featured art was dedicated to patriotic and anti-war messaging, reflecting the latest events in Eastern Ukraine. The High Castle exhibition is considered to be the single most dynamic independent art event in Lviv as it provides young artists with the unique opportunity to compete with recognized artistic maestros.

Багато творів були присвячені патріотичній і антивоєнній тематиці, що відображає останні події в східній частині країни. Chinese art in Lviv On November 26, 2014 a personal exhibition of glass paintings “Orient” by Lviv’s National Art Academy post-graduate student Hao Xiao Hua opened at Pory Roku gallery. Hao Xiao Hua is a talented young artist whose work is closely connected to both Ukraine and her native China. Exhibition showcases the author’s personal perception of everyday life in China as well as presents artistic paintings of Buddha loaded with positive energy. Among the most characteristic features of art by Hao Xiao Hua is her incredible glass painting techniques, dynamic use of color and contrasts together with an inventiveness and ironic emotional observations.

Талановита молода художниця, чия праця тісно пов’язана і з Україною, і з рідним Китаєм презентувала картини, які представляють авторське сприйняття повсякденного сучасного життя Китаю, а також різні іпостасі Будди, які несуть заряд позитивної енергії. Tradition Revival:

Lviv candles manufactory Today, Lviv is world-renowned for its tasty coffee and sweet chocolate. But did you know that in medieval Lviv it was the art of making candles where the city carved out a niche for itself?

The Golden Age of Chandlery During the Middle Ages, Lviv was a small and quiet town surrounded by fortified defensive walls and towers. Most medieval Leopolitans engaged in trades and crafts. Artisans from than 35 different crafts were represented among the city’s many guilds. However, as candles were critical necessities in pre-electric Lviv, this made chandlery an important and lucrative trade. There were two types of chandlers in medieval Lviv: tallow and wax. Tallow chandlers twisted or braided cotton strings (wicks) into melted and strained beef or sheep fat. Often a side business of butchery, tallow chandlery was considered much less desirable than beeswax chandlery as it retained much of the smell of the animal both during the production of the candle, as well as when it was burned. For those with the financial means, beeswax candles were much preferred to tallow as they burned with very little smoke or odour. As both the Church and the aristocracy insisted on them, this made beeswax chandlery a very lucrative business. Yes, during the Middle Ages candles were even more important than soap and the church played an important role as a major consumer.

By the 16th century, the financial might of the influential chandler and soap-makers guild was such that it financed the building of the Strumilow Tower, located across the Mariya Snizhna church near the Krakiw Gate. The Lviv city treasury would spend nearly 1 zloty (golden coin) a month for candles made especially for the mayor. Festive religious celebrations at the Latin Cathedral would see the Church spend 5-9 zloty for the purchase of candles alone, while candles for the altar at the City Hall Bell Tower cost upwards of 18 zloty!

The Decline & Renaissance of the Candle Despite the widespread introduction of electricity in the 20th century, Lviv still managed to feature some small, private candle and soap making factories and, of course, the masters that produce them. Candles enjoyed a renewed popularity during the mid-1980s when interest in candles as decorative items, mood-setters, and gifts began to spike. Lviv Candles Manufactory located at 1, Muzeyna Square, was founded in 2013 with main aim of revival traditions of handicraft trade. At the Candles Manufactory we turn paraffin wax and beeswax turned into candles by giving those souls – wicks. Candle Festival

The centre of historical Lviv – Muzeyna Square – was home to the Candle Festival organized by Lviv’s Candle Manufacture from November 14-16. The event featured a colourful presentation of Lviv’s attractive promotional logo – “Lviv: Open to the World”. Enormous wax candles in the shape of each of the five coloured towers featured in the logo – the Armenian Cathedral Bell Tower, Kornyakta Tower, City Hall Tower, the Latin Cathedral Tower, and the Bernardino Monastery Bell Tower – were on display, in a wonderful and romantic show of the allure of our city. Muzeyna Square - is a very dear place to Leopolitans and it was an especially popular choice as host, noted the event’s organizer Andriy Sidor. With all of the twinkly lights, positive energy, and jolly atmosphere, the Candle Festival was a warm reminder that the Christmas and New Year holidays are right around the corner!!

Львівська свічкова мануфактУрА Сьогодні Львів всесвітньо відомий своєю запашною кавою і солодким шоколадом. Але чи знаєте ви, що в середньовічному Львові було розвинуте ще й мистецтво виготовлення свічок?

Золотий вік свічки У середні віки Львів був невеликим і тихим містом, оточеним фортечними оборонними мурами, валами й вежами. Більшість середньовічних львів’ян займалась промислами й ремеслами. Ремісники понад 35 різних цехів були представлені серед багатьох гільдій міста. У часи, коли ще не було ні газового, ні електричного освітлення, свічки були предметом першої необхідності в кожному домі, а їх виробництво і продаж були дуже прибутковим заняттям. Свічки в ті часи робили або з тваринного жиру, або – дорожчі – з бджолиного воску. Всередині свічки обов’язково мав бути гніт, скручений з рослинного волокна. Часто свічки були побічним виробництвом на бійнях, де жир і сало вважались відходами. Ті, хто міг собі це дозволити, купували воскові свічки, вони менше чадили, та й запах від них був дещо приємніший. Оскільки свічки масово використовувались в церквах і будинках аристократів, попит був значний – і пропозиція була теж достатньою. Прибутки виробників свічок були настільки значними, що їх цех фінансував будівництво Струмилівської вежі, розташованої навпроти церкви Марії Сніжної поруч з Краківською брамою. Львівська міська скарбниця витрачала майже 1 золотий в місяць на свічки, зроблені спеціально для міського голови. В період свят в Латинському соборі витрачали 5-9 золотих лише на закупівлю свічок, а свічки для вівтаря в дзвіниці Ратуші коштувати понад 18 золотих!

Фестиваль свічок Перед Домініканським собором, на Музейній площі, 14-16 листопада відбувся I Фестиваль свічок, організований Львівською свічковою мануфактурою. Головною подією фестивалю стала особлива презентація логотипу міста Львів - тепер його втілили ще й у такому, здавалось би, нетривкому матеріалі, як віск. Всі п'ять кольорових веж логотипу: дзвіниця Вірменської церкви, вежа Корнякта, вежа Ратуші, вежа Латинського кафедрального собору, дзвіниця Бернардинського монастиря - були зроблені з воску, як величезні свічки. «Музейна площа добре знайома й люба львів’янам і саме тому її вибрали місцем проведення цього свята.» – сказав організатор фестивалю Андрій Сидор. Мерехтіння вогнів, весела атмосфера і позитивна енергія фестивалю нагадала, що Різдво і новорічні свята таки наближаються.

LVIV SOCIETY Lviv Hosts Annual International Economic Forum Lviv played host to the 14th annual International Economic Forum – which gathers businesspeople, politicians, investors, academics, and other dignitaries – on November 27-28 at the Hotel Dnistr and Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. The forum, labelled as ‘Vision 2020: Strategies for Countries, Regions, and Business’, attracted over 300 participants – including 50 speakers from 12 different countries – to discuss two important issues for the development of Ukraine: decentralization / reform of state regional policy, and the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement as an opportunity to enact change in Ukraine. Lviv’s International Economic Forum has established itself as one of the major platforms for dialogue between representatives of Eastern

European business and government. The event traditionally brings together important foreign and local dignitaries along with regional business leaders in an effort to strengthen integration, stimulate investment, and generally increase ties between Ukraine and its European neighbours. Ukraine’s First Graphic Novel Lviv’s Art & Cultural centre – Dzyga – played host to a presentation of the graphic novel ‘Hero Against Own Will’, based on Ivan Franko’s revolution-themed novel, on November 1st. An exhibition of original paintings featured in the novel created by Mihai Tymoshenko and Cyril Horiszny was also part of the festivities. November 1st was a particularly noteworthy date, as it was on the same day in 1848 when revolution broke out in Lviv that spread to several other European countries. These events came to be known as the ‘Spring of Nations’ and were the main theme of Franko’s unrenowned novel ‘Hero Against Own Will’. The graphic novel – Ukraine’s very first, showcases Austro-Hungarian Lviv the way it is seen both by Franko as well as modern writers.

Перший графічний роман Україні В культурно-мистецькому центрі "Дзига" 1 листопада 2014 р. пройшла презентація ілюстрацій графічного роману "Герой поневолі", разом з презентацією книги, створеної Міхаєм Тимошенком і Кирилом Горішнім за романом Івана Франка. Це було 1 листопада 1848 року, коли до Львова докотилась революція, що поширювалась в кількох європейських країнах. Ці події, відомі в історії як "весна народів" стали головною темою маловідомого роману Івана Франка «Герой поневолі". І рівно через 150 років в той же день 1 листопада відбулась презентація першого українського графічного роману, в якому зображено Львів часів Австро-Угорщини очима Івана Франка та наших сучасників.

“Dialogue of Cultures for the Sake of Peace” The Lviv State Academic Opera & Ballet Theatre was host to a unique cultural event on November 16th: “Dialogue of Culture for the Sake of Peace”. Artists from Ukraine, Poland, Germany, and Switzerland united for this festive concert that showcased a couple of spectacular performances by two masters of modern music: Krzysztof Penderecki – Poland’s greatest living composer; and Myroslav Skoryk – one of Ukraine’s most prominent composers. In addition to the show, several awards were handed out in conjunction with the We Open Paderewski international festival, including the Paderewski Award itself – a bronze statue awarded to recognize a significant contribution to Polish-Ukrainian unity. In addition, the Lviv Regional Council handed out its medal symbolizing the best representatives of the union of the two cultures.

"Діалог культур заради миру" У приміщенні Львівського державного академічного театру опери та балету 16 листопада відбувся унікальний культурний захід – «Діалог культур заради миру", який об'єднав артистів з України, Польщі, Німеччини та Швейцарії. Крім святкового концерту відбулась також церемонія нагородження в рамках III Міжнародного фестивалю "Відкриваємо Падеревського". "Премія Падеревського" у вигляді бронзової фігури була створена для відзначення значного внеску діячів культури у справу польсько-української єдності. Учасниками «Діалогу культур» були також два маестро сучасної музики – від Польщі – всесвітньо відомий Кшиштоф Пендерецький і від України – Мирослав Скорик, один з найвидатніших сучасних композиторів України. Також на концерті була представлена ще одна нагорода - медаль Львівської обласної ради, що символізує єднання двох культур та їх найкращих представників.

Western Ukraine’s coolest radio station – FM Halychyna – has introduced a new motto this season: “Ukraine has changed, and we have changed”. The station promises to offer new musical content, new programming, and interesting new personalities; however the station maintains that it hasn’t changed its love of Ukrainian traditions, customs, language, songs, and music. FM Halychyna continues to react to the changing reality in Ukraine, coming after adopting the previous mottos of: “Ukrainian is trendy” and “Do you hear Ukrainian? – It’s FM Halychyna”. The 3rd season will concentrate on national values and Ukrainian cultural content. The new season’s promotional campaign showcases the faces of the hosts adorned in red and black Ukrainian ornaments, symbolizing love, sadness, hope, and belief in a better future. The kickoff event was held at the newly-opened RIUS business centre & hotel and attracted a large crowd of partners, clients, media representatives, and anyone else that loves and listens to Ukrainian radio. The ceremony’s highlight was surely the award ceremony, where the Independent Association of Broadcasters recognized FM Halychyna as the #1 radio station among high-income Ukrainians aged 35+. Lviv’s First Street Food Market Premieres The first permanent Street Food Market in Ukraine opened last month on the premises of Lviv’s Arsenal museum. ‘Spiritual & Peaceful Night’ event from TM Roksolana" Performances by the Theatre of Shadows

Lviv Nights Lviv Nights – one of the most anticipated cultural events on the Lviv calendar – was held over them November 14-16 weekend. openhagen was the stage for the ‘Life is Always in Fashion’ charity fundraising event held on November 12th. The event, jointly organized by the Embassy of Ukraine to Denmark along with the Velvet Hearts charity foundation, Danish brand Naledi Copenhagen, and the London-based Fashion Politique Ltd, brought together renowned Ukraine designers who donated clothes and accessories in an effort to raise funds for medical equipment and medication for Ukrainian military hospitals treating soldiers from the ATO zone. Items from many of Ukraine’s most talented designers were featured, including: Olena Dats’, Elena Reva, TM “Stolichny”, and Valery Kovalska. Shows from DOMANOFF, LAKE, and PRZHONSKAYA were especially well received. Hosted by Salon K, the event attracted an A-List crowd, including politicians, diplomats, the business crowd, media, and of course, fashionistas. Leopolitan Anna la Germaine, director of Fashion Politique Ltd. and co-organizer of the event, was impressed with the tone of the shows: “After those fashion shows, guests came to me to share their emotions, express gratitude, and asked me to bring more of such spectacular goods. It was very nice to hear such kind words!” This was the first large-scale event to feature Ukrainian fashion in Denmark, but it certainly looks like it won’t be the last.

Champions League Updates: Shakhtar Qualifies Lviv’s adopted Ukrainian champions – Shakhtar Donetsk – are very much feeling at home in Lviv after qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages with a 5-0 thumping of Belarus’ BATE Borisov. Shakhtar continued to show no mercy to the Belarussian squad, following up on their 7-0 demolition in Belarus with another thrashing at home in Arena Lviv. Leopolitan fans in attendance were treated to a record-breaking performance by Shakhtar striker Luiz Adriano – last season’s Ukrainian Premiere League scoring champion – who broke several records by scoring a second straight hat trick against BATE after registering 5 in the previous encounter. The current Champions League scoring leader (with 9), he had already equalled Lionel Messi’s record for most goals in a game (5) when he equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for most goals through 4 games. After qualifying for the knockout stages, Shakhtar fell flat in a 0:1 loss to Atletico Madrid that ensured the team qualifies as runner-up in Group H. They finish the group stages in Portugal with a Dec. 10 tilt against Porto before waiting until Dec. 15 to determine their opponent for the Round of 16. Those games are set for February / March 2015.

Після кваліфікації для плей-офф, "Шахтар" програв 0:1 у поєдинку з "Атлетіко" Мадрид, але зайняв друге місце в групі H. Lviv Takes Karate Bronze

From November 5-9, all eyes in the karate world were turned to the World Karate Championships in Bremen, Germany; where over 900 martial artists from 100+ nations competed in one of the 16 categories. By the end of the tournament, new World Champions were crowned in both the Kata (fixed practice) and Kumite (free fight) divisions. Ukraine was represented by 15 athletes that participated in either the World Championships, or the first-ever World Karate Championships for persons with disabilities. The Ukrainian team fared well at the tournaments, with Ulyana Smirnova taking gold in Kata Wheelchair, and Odessa’s Iryna Zaretska and Lviv’s own Stanislav Horuna (of the local Union club) both leaving with Germany with bronze medals. With the results, Ukraine now sits in 14th place in the official world rankings of the World Karate Federation.

Чемпіонат світу з карате відбувся в німецькому місті Бремені 5-9 листопада, де понад 900 спортсменів з понад 100 країн змагалися у 16 вагових категоріях. Каратисти традиційно змагались в обох категоріях – ”ката” (формальні вправи) і куміте (вільний бій). Україну представляли 15 учасників, які брали участь і в чемпіонаті світу, і в першому чемпіонаті світу з карате для осіб з обмеженими можливостями. Українська команда добре показали себе в турнірах - Уляна Смирнова завоювала золоту медаль у вправах “ката” на візку, а одеситка Ірина Зарецька і львів’янин Станіслав Горуна (з клубу ”Юніон”) залишали Німеччину з бронзовими медалями. З такими результатами Україна тепер займає 14 місце в офіційних світових рейтингах Світової федерації карате.

Handball Lviv’s Halychanka women’s handball team played host to the Dutch squad Virto / Quintus in European Handball Federation Round 3 Challenge Cup action on November 22nd. After defeating the Dutch girls 24:18 the week before, our hometown ladies needed only a loss by 5 or less goals or better to advance to the Round of 16. After losing in last season’s semifinal to the eventual champions – the best performance by a Ukrainian team since the tournament’s inception – the Halychanka are hungry to go even further this year. The team’s skill, desire, energy, and clever coaching by Vasyl Kozar have ensured that they have qualified for the next round, after defeating Virto / Quintus 27:23 in the return match at “Halychyna” sport palace . The team now looks forward to meeting the Greek squad Amyntas Amyntaiou in the Round of 16 that begins in February 2015.

Lviv’s BC Halychyna Continues Slow Start Lviv’s BC Politekhnika-Halychyna – only two seasons removed from a 4th-place finish in the SuperLeague – finds itself in last place in the 11-team league after a taxing 1-10 start to the season. The team began the season with 7 straight losses before squeaking by 10th-place DniproAzot 84:82 at home on November 21st. The team has continued to slide, posting 3 straight losses since the victory. A nice surprise for the team early this season has been the play of Ukrainian point guard Anton Davydiuk, who through the first 11 games is averaging 11.3 points and 4.5 rebounds a game. Due to the late start to the season, the condensed scheduled sees the squad play another 6 games in December, including home encounters with 8th-ranked BC Odessa (Dec. 5th), 1st-place Khimik (Dec. 19th), and 9th-ranked Hoverla (Dec. 28th). All home games are played at the Halychyna Sports Palace (8 Kerchenska St.).

Чорна смуга БК "Галичина" Ukrainian Chess Championship Lviv played host to the 2014 Ukrainian Individual Chess Championships for both men and women from November 10-22. The 83rd men’s tournament was topped by GM Yuriy Kuzubov and GM Pavel Eljanov on 7.5/11 points; however Kuzubov was crowned champion with a better tie-break score. GM Anton Korobov shared the bronze prize with former World Champion GM Ruslan Ponomariov on 6.5 points each. On the women’s side, GM Anna Muzychuk was crowned Ukrainian champion in the 74th women’s championship after scoring 6/8, leaving runner-up GM Natalia Zhukova a ½ point behind. The sensation of the tournament was surely 16-year-old WFM Yulja Osmak, who shared 3rd place with IM Mariya Muzychuk on 5 points but took the bronze on a superior tie-break score. After winning 62 ELO pints at the Yury Privalov Memorial earlier last month, she has now added 86 new ELO points to her rating leaving the young chess prodigy with a very impressive 2392.

Команда почала сезон з 7 програшів підряд аж до скромної перемоги 21 листопада над "ДніпроАЗОТ" (10 місце) з рахунком 84:82. Але невдачі продовжували переслідувати львів’ян – знову три програші підряд. Приємним сюрпризом для команди на початку цього сезону став розігруючий Антон Давидюк, який протягом перших 11 ігор в середньому набирав 11,3 очка і 4,5 підбирань за гру. Через те, що сезон розпочався із запізненням, "Галичина" має провести ще 6 ігор в грудні, включно з домашніми матчами з командами БК "Одеса" (8 місце) – 5 грудня, "Хімік" (1 місце) – 19 грудня, і Говерла (9 місце) – 28 грудня. Всі домашні ігри проходять у Палаці спорту "Галичина" (вул. Керченнська, 8).

Український шаховий чемпіонат Львів приймав індивідуальний чемпіонат України з шахів 2014 року серед чоловіків та жінок 10-22 листопада. На чемпіонський титул 83-го чоловічого турніру претендували Юрій Кузубов (GM, Краматорськ) і Павло Ельянов (GM, Харків) з однаковим рахунком 7,5 очок; однак чемпіоном судді визнали Кузубова з кращими результатами тай-брейку. EBA Events Legal Committee On Wednesday, 26th of November 2014, 5 p.m. at the Faculty of International relations of Ivan Franko National University in Lviv the open meeting of Legal Committee of European Business Association in Lviv region on the topic of Lustration and newly adopted legislation Purification of Government was held. The invited speakers of the meeting were: Markian Malskyy – attorney-atlaw, partner of Arzinger law firm, Member of the Board of the Lviv Division of the Ukrainian Bar Association, Deputy Chairman of the European Business Association (EBA) Western Ukrainian Office in Lviv; Mykola Savelyev – journalist, social activist, chief editor of Newspaper “Ratusha”; Anatoliy Romanyuk – Doctor of Political Science, Professor, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv The purpose of the meeting was to get understanding of the provisions of named Law and summarizing of preliminary findings of its implementation. In the course of the meeting certain provisions of the Law of Ukraine “On Purification of Government” was analyzed, as well as its compliance with national legislation, first practice of its implementation and possible problems of its realization, political influence of newly adopted changes on situation in the state and analysis of public opinion in this regard. The participants of the meeting actively discussed the above mentioned issues and possible effects of realization of the law, asking questions to the speakers and sharing own experience.

EBA round table on Judicial Reform On 2nd of December 2014 EBA Western Ukrainian office together with the Department of Ukrainian Bar Association held the round table on Judicial Reform 2014: What it should be? The participants discussed judicial reform from different perspectives. One of the main feature of the round table was that scientists, heads of courts from the various levels and entrepreneurs met in one place and had a chance to share their worries about the judicial system. It was mentioned that elimination of one of the branches, for example the Commercial Court, will not become a driving element for the system. Automation, quality approach to the powers of a judge and of course judges’ responsibility were the main issues which supposed to be taken into account. LVIV TODAY | December 2014

n this issue of Lviv Today Markian Malskyy, Partner of Arzinger law firm, Head of West Ukrainian Branch Office, attorney-at-law, PhD, is answering the following question: Abolition of seals in business transactions.

According to the Law ‘’On Amendments to certain legislative acts of Ukraine on simplification of the procedure for establishing business’’ which came into force on November 1, 2014, the use of a seal in business transactions is no longer obligatory. A signature of a party suffices. The legislator made it clear that this conforms to the European practice and that a seal cannot eliminate the risk of raiding completely. Also, the requirement of seals supposedly hampers the development of electronic documents and its elimination will facilitate deregulation. Nevertheless, the novelty raises concerns. Some businesses already expressed fears of the increased abuse and fraud, since it is much easier to fake a signature than a seal. The risk of corporate raiding increases drastically. Also, the lack of the seals on the documents leads to distrust in documents, which may provide additional reasons for notarization of such documents or verification of the signature authenticity by an expert. Additional reasons for notarization of documents mean additional expenses for business activity. It will be not surprising when the number of legal claims for recognition of contracts as invalid or for their early termination will increase, adding up to the workload in courts. In general, the law seemingly does not take into account the mentality of the business people of Ukraine and the established trade customs, as well as potential consequences of the adoption of this law. Finally, the law does not answer some questions, for example, what are the companies expected to do with existing seals? The simplification of the procedure for establishing business is a necessary element of reforms in Ukraine. However, in our opinion the government should better try harder to simplify the procedure of obtaining licenses, permits and other approval documents, since it seems that business is not yet ready to abandon the use of seals completely.

EBA Family Day On Saturday, November 8, EBA members had gathered together with their families at the warm EBA Family Day. During the day kids and adults could find out more about the process of cooking pizza, took part in culinary family championship on cooking the tastiest pizza, tasted Italian cuisine and also visited new Vapiano Restaurant in Lviv. All participants of the event took home a peace of holiday due to the master class by Iryna Berdal-Shevchyk, who had taught each of them how to make doll-angels and also due to active participation in a children's card lottery. Presents for this lottery were given by Trefl company.
