Bavarians are coming!
fc SHAKHTAR TO PLAY fc BAYERN MUNICH IN LVIV While Leopolitans might be delighted that Lviv’s adopted Ukrainian champion football team drew the globally popular Bayern Munich in their Round of 16 draw, certainly the team cannot be very happy. With 24 German Bundesliga titles, 10 European Cup championship appearances, and 5 European Cup championships, the perennial favourites from Bavaria pose a formidable challenge for Mircea Lucescu and his crew. Bayern has reached the European Cup championship in 3 of the last 5 years, has yet to lose this season in the Bundesliga, and had it not been for a late collapse against Manchester City in November, would have walked through the group stage unblemished. Shakhtar meanwhile, has only made it past this stage of the Champions League once before, has lost 3 times already in the Ukrainian Premiere League, and squeaked out of what was considered to be one of the easier divisions in the group stage with only 2 wins in 6 matches.

That being said, Shakhtar will not be a walkover and Leopolitan football fans can expect to see the strongest level of football in the city since the German national team defeated Portugal during EURO 2012. Led by Brazilian striker Luiz Adriano, who leads the competition with 9 goals, including back-to-back hat tricks against Belarus’ BATE Borisov, Shakhtar will be looking to build up a lead at ‘home’ before heading into Munich’s monstrous Allianz Arena for the return match on March 11th. Of course, the powerhouse German squad has no shortage of star power too, with the likes of Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Xabi Alonso, Mario Goetze, “The Golden Ball” award nominee as well as 2014 FIFA Golden Glove winner Manuel Neuer at their disposal. Mark February 23rd down in your calendars, as Lviv’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre will be the stage for German jazz group De Phazz – a downtempo ensemble that integrates modern turntabling with elements of Latin, soul, trip-hop, and bass to create one of the most unique lounge sounds in Europe. Founded in 1997, De Phazz has become famous for several lounge projects including their popular debut album Detunized Gravity. Following the success of their first album, the band released several other studio compilations, including, among others: 2001’s Death by Chocolate; 2007’s Days of Twang; and 2010’s Lala 2.0. The group is notable for featuring a wide variety of musical styles, including jazz, downtempo, soul, Latin, triphop, and lounge. Pit Baumgartner, a German producer, fronts the group and changes out his crew for each album. Some members however, such as Karl Frierson and Pat Appleton, make recurring appearances. De Phazz will appeal to fans of jazz and lounge, especially those that enjoy sample-driven tracks. The show begins at 19:00 and tickets cost 300-1000 UAH. В понеділок, 23 лютого на сцені львівського оперного театру виступлять музиканти відомого німецького гурту De Phazz, який вдало поєднує у своїй творчості елементи різних стилів – латина, соул, тріп-хоп, щоб створити саме те унікальне звучання, яке знає вся Європа. Створений у 1997 році, De Phazz прославився своїми лаунж-проектами, починаючи з дебютного альбому Detunized Gravity. Після успіху свого першого альбому, група випустила кілька інших студійних збірників, в тому числі: Death by Chocolate – 2001р.; Days of Twang – 2007 р.; і Lala 2.0 – 2010 р. Характерним для виконавців є широкий вибір музичних стилів, зокрема джаз, даунтемпо, соул, латина, тріп-хоп, і лаунж. They often call Lviv the ‘Paris of the East’, and maybe that explains the love affair the city has with all things French. This tradition continues this February with the annual Evenings of French Cinema film festival, brought to you care of Arthouse Traffic, the French Institute in Ukraine, and Citroen. French cinema lovers won’t be disappointed, as the biggest French films of 2014 are set to be on showcase; from Philippe de Chauveron’s hilarious ‘Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au Bon Dieu?’ to Pierre Salvadori’s dramatic ‘Dans la Cour’; from the famed Jean-Luc Godard’s ‘Adieu au Langage’ to Arnaud & Jean-Marie Larrieu’s thriller ‘L’amour est un Crime Parfait’, there is sure to be a film for everyone. Shown in their original language with Ukrainian subtitles, it is a great way to see the film both in its original splendor as well as to pick up a few phrases in the language of love. Vive La France! February 10, 19:00 at Lviv’s S. Ludkevich Philharmonic Concert Hall (7 Chaykovskogo St.) On February 10th, Lviv’s S. Ludkevich Philharmonic Concert Hall is pleased to present VIVE LA FRANCE! – a joint cultural initiative of French and Ukrainian artists. For this special French cabaret, Ukrainian musician, vocalist, and composer Oleh Skrypka has invited Ms. Patsy & Jonathan Dassin – son of the late Joe Dassin – for a special presentation of songs made famous by his father. Special guest Vasyl Popadyuk, a Canadian violin virtuoso, is also set to perform. This will not be a clichéd cabaret full of nameless dancers doing the cancan; it is will be a mature musical showcasing the talents of the performers. Lviv Celebrates Chinese New Year February 18–22 at venues across the city Celebrating China’s Lunar New Year has become a well-established tradition for fans of Oriental culture in Lviv. This year, Leopolitans and guests of the city will be delighted with the events in store to celebrate Chinese New Year in Lviv 2015. The events are organized by the Lanhua Cultural Research Centre of Ukraine & China and will take place at venues city-wide between February 18th-22nd. This colourful festival features traditional and contemporary Chinese cultural activities, including: singing, dancing, arts & crafts, laser
shows, kung-fu workshops, and much more. One of the highlights of the festival is sure to be the ‘Live Fire Dragons’ carnival parade. The Lviv Startup Club will host their annual GameDev Conference, which is set to bring together over 300 game developers and others involved in the gaming industry to Lviv’s Ukrainian Catholic University on January 31. GameDev is the place to learn about an industry which entertains over 300 million people around the world each month. All kinds of developers will be represented at the event, including those that produce games for iPhone, Android, Flash, Social, Browser MMO, and Download Games. Expected to be in attendance in addition to the developers are owners of game studios, indie game developers, and publishers. Designers, musicians, freelancers, and others looking to gain an understanding of the gaming industry are also invited. Event activities will include: guest speakers, panel discussions, workshops, and – what everyone is most excited about – game launches. Lviv Lion AWARDS 2014 Honouring the best in the capital of Western Ukraine
W
hen a year starts with a country in the throes of a revolution and ends in what can only be considered a war, it can be difficult to look back on the year and remember the good. The year 2014 had a significant impact on Lviv – city Mayor Andriy Sadovyi become a household name nationwide; Arena Lviv emerge as a cultural hub for both sport and music; and Leopolitan talent recognized both throughout Ukraine (Andriana Khasanshin wins Miss Ukraine) and across Europe (Old Lion’s Publishing House wins prestigious children’s book award). Of course, prominent among these events the whole year was Leopolitan living legend Svyatoslav Vakarchuk – the front-man for Ukraine’s iconic Okean Elzy – who not only toured the country to record crowds, but also used his influence to support the principles of the EuroMaidan and to raise money for the injured from the war in Donbass. So as 2014 draws to a close, Lviv Today presents you with our annual awards for the people, places, and events that have helped make the past 12 months in Lviv so memorable.

Рік 2014 став особливим для Львова – мер міста Андрій Садовий з партією “Самопоміч” вийшов на політичну арену; стадіон “Арена Львів” перетворюється в культурний центр для спортивних і музичних подій; львів’янка Андріана Хасаншин здобуває титул “Міс Україна”; львівське “Видавництво Старого Лева” отримує престижну нагороду на міжнародному конкурсі дитячої книжки. І, звичайно ж, не можна оминути серед цих подій живу легенду українського року Святослава Вакарчука – фронтмена знакового для України гурту “Океан Ельзи” – який на своїх концертах не лише збирав рекордну кількість глядачів, але й використовував свій вплив для підтримки принципів Євромайдану і для збору коштів для постраждалих від війни в Донбасі. Команда Lviv Today приготувала перелік щорічних нагород для людей, місць і подій, які допомогли зробити останні 12 місяців у Львові по справжньому незабутніми.

Living Leopolitan legend – and frontman for iconic Ukrainian rock group Okean Elzy (Elsa’s Ocean) – seems like a no-brainer in this category for 2014. 20 years after the formation of what would turn out to be the most popular post-Soviet rock group in the entire CIS region, the band – and the man – shows no signs of slowing down. Vakarchuk performed in his hometown three times this year: once as part of a tour to promote their latest record Zemlya (Earth); once to celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary; and again for a special Independence Day concert that was aired nationally on television. Okean Elzy continues to gain in prominence and popularity, as is evidenced by the recordsetting crowd of over 75,000 the group drew to a summer concert at Kyiv’s Olympiyskiy Stadium. By now Vakarchuk’s list of accomplishments outside music is well known. The theoretical physics-trained philosopher has served as an ambassador for the UN Development Programme and as a member of the Verkhovna Rada. He is recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in Ukraine (as his 750,000+ Twitter followers can attest) and was even the first winner of Ukraine’s ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’. But what sets this modern-day poet apart is his work in a variety of social and cultural projects and his outspoken support against corruption and for a European future for Ukraine. From founding charity organizations such as People of the Future, to performing at people’s rallies such as the Orange Revolution and EuroMaidan, to organizing charity concerts for causes he believes in – such as his December concert that raised $10 million UAH to rebuild a hospital in Zaporizhiya, whatever this likeable Leopolitan touches can be sure to turn to gold. Lviv Today congratulates Okean Elzy on 20 wonderful years and thanks our favourite Leopolitan for the service he’s given to the city and country over that time.

Вакарчук виступав у своєму рідному місті тричі цього року: вперше під час промо-туру на підтримку останнього альбому “Земля”; вдруге - на святкуванні 20-річчя гурту; і з концертом на День Незалежності, який транслювало національне телебачення. “Океан Ельзи” продовжує набирати популярність, про що свідчить рекордна кількість глядачів - понад 75000, що зібрались влітку на Олімпійському стадіоні Києва. Вакарчук займається не лише музикою. Фізик-теоретик за освітою, він був послом Програми розвитку ООН і депутатом Верховної Ради. Він визнаний одним зі 100 найвпливовіших людей в Україні (про що свідчать понад 750,000+ його послідовників у Twitter) і навіть першим переможцем української версії гри "Хто хоче стати мільйонером». Але він не лише сучасний поет – він працює в різних соціальних і культурних проектах і відверто підтримує боротьбу з корупцією і європейське майбутнє України. Він був засновником благодійних організацій, як от “Люди майбутнього”, виступав під час подій Помаранчевої революції і Євромайдану, організовував благодійні концерти в підтримку справи, в яку вірить - наприклад, грудневий концерт, на якому зібрали понад 10 мільйонів гривень на відновлення лікарні в Запоріжжі, він вміє перетворювати власний талант у золото. Cultural Art Project of the Year Musical Flash Mob at the Airport On March 30th, in honour of those who gave their life during the EuroMaidan revolution, flash mobs appeared at airports across Ukraine performing to Beethoven’s classic Ode to Joy. The performance at Lviv’s new Danylo Halytskyi terminal, was coordinated with performances at airports in Odessa, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and both Kyiv Boryspil and Zhulyany airports. The event was organized by in part by Iolanta Pryshlyak, the Deputy Director of the Lviv Philharmonic Society and Director of the INSO-Lviv Youth Symphony Orchestra. The performance of the famous tune at Lviv’s airport featured pianist Markian Matseh playing with the Volodomyr Syvohip-conducted INSO-Lviv Symphony Orchestra and joined by the Gloria Chamber Choir.

Anniversary of the Year 200 Years of Shevchenko In a year when thousands of Ukrainians have died fighting for an independent Ukraine free from corruption, it seems appropriate that the country – and Lviv in particular – celebrated the 200th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s most prized poet whose life and legacy are especially valued for the spirit of freedom imbued in his poetry. Among the many cultural events and initiatives that marked the anniversary, possibly the highlight was the original exhibition of colourful posters on display in Lviv’s city centre. The unconventional posters of the great Ukrainian poet were provided by prominent Ukrainian artists such as: Olena Staranchuk; Olga Tereschenko; and Taras Pastuschyuk.

Серед численних культурних заходів та ініціатив, якими відзначали річницю, можливо, одним з найцікавіших був показ оригінальних барвистих плакатів біля ратуші в центрі Львова. Плакати були виконані в нетрадиційній манері, але всі впізнавали великого українського поета в творах українських художників Олени Старанчук, Ольги Терещенко і Тараса Пастушика.

In spite of the ongoing political conflict and difficult business environment in the region, Ukraine continues to have a thriving startup industry as venture capital firms continue to invest heavily in the sector. For example, at the recent Investor Day Central & Eastern Europe (IDCEE) conference, no less than 19 different startups were awarded with cash, mentorships, and top honours. Among the winners included Petcube, Looksery, and LaMetric – which offers a device similar to a desktop alarm that works just like the ‘notifications’ function on your smart phone. The maker of this one-of-akind device is a joint UK/ Ukraine (Lviv-based) Internet of Things startup called Smart Atoms. A Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign exceeded their initial goal of $69,000 by already drawing in a contribution of nearly $400,000. This customisable ticker device is designed for both the home and office and is currently under production at the Foxconn factory, noted for its collaboration with such notable companies as Apple, Amazon, and Pocketbook.

Кампанія громадського збору коштів на Kickstarter вже перевищила їх первісну мету – 69 000 доларів і сягнула цифри близько 400 тисяч. Цей маленький пристрій призначений для дому чи офісу, і зараз його виробництвом займається фірма Foxconn, відома своєю співпрацею з такими відомими компаніями, як Apple, Amazon, і Pocketbook.

Sports Event of the Year Usyk Title Bout at Arena Lviv One of the main events that helped Arena Lviv emerge as a premiere place for both sport and music this year was the highly anticipated grudge-match between Ukrainian Olympic champion Oleksandr Usyk and South African cruiserweight champion “Billy the Kid” Bruwer for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) Intercontinental Interim Jr. Heavyweight title on October 4th. Usyk passed his first meaningful test in his still young professional career with flying colours, stopping the durable South African in 7 one-sided rounds. After defending his title in Kyiv two months later, the Ukrainian southpaw is now 6-0 (6 KOs) and the reigning WBO intercontinental jr. heavyweight champion. Look for bigger fights with more seasoned fighters in the future for this power-hitting Ukrainian patriot.

Breakthrough of the Year Samopomich When long-time Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi announced in late 2012 that he would be forming his own national political party, political observers saw it as a long-term plan for the mayor to enter national politics following his term as Mayor of Lviv. Samopomich, meaning Self-Reliance and taking its name from credit unions formed in Galicia in the pre-war period, aimed to govern based on “Christian morality and common sense.” Coming to national prominence for his actions during the EuroMaidan – such as announcing that the so-called ‘Dictatorship Laws’ would never be valid in Lviv – Sadovyi’s fledgling party saw early, somewhat unexpected success in the Kyiv local elections in May, when the party finished a strong 3rd with nearly 7% of the vote and 5 seats. Still, when President Petro Poroshenko announced the early parliamentary elections in August, the party was barely seen as a legitimate force even in its base of Western Ukraine. In a crowded political race that at least 10 parties with a legitimate chance of reaching the 5% threshold, and competing with at least 6 other parties that advocated for anti-corruption reform and a path towards the EU, Samopomich differentiated their message by highlighting that the party had no former parliamentarians on its party list, but instead medium-sized business owners and representatives from NGOs. Collectively holding its breath on election day, Samopomich surprised seemingly everyone to come out of nowhere to finish 3rd in the popular vote with 10.97%, 33 seats in the Verkhovna Rada, and representation in a coalition government . The future bodes well for the mayor, as he looks set to play a prominent role in national politics following his final term as Mayor of Lviv.
Прорив року Самопоміч Коли мер Львова Андрій Садовий оголосив наприкінці 2012 року, що він буде формувати свою власну національну політичну партію, політичні спостерігачі розцінили це як довгостроковий план мера увійти в національну політику після свого перебування на посаді міського голови. Самопоміч взяла свою назву від кредитних спілок, що діяли в Галичині в довоєнний період на засадах самоуправління. Садовий став відомий в Україні своїми діями під час Євромайдану – це, він, зокрема, проголосив, що так звані “диктаторські закони” ніколи не будуть діяти у Львові. Дещо несподіваний успіх партія здобула на місцевих виборах у Києві в травні, де Самопоміч зайняла третє місце з майже 7% голосів і 5 місцями. А на дострокових парламентських виборах в серпні партія, яку не вважали серйозною силою навіть на заході України, з-поміж, принаймні, 10 партій, які виступають за реформи, боротьбу з корупцією та шлях до ЄС і мали всі шанси подолати 5% бар'єр, Самопоміч заявила, що не мала жодного колишнього депутата Верховної Ради у своїх партійних списках, а лише власників середнього бізнесу та представників неурядових організацій. Несподівано для всіх, партія, що, здавалось з’явилася нізвідки, прийшла до фінішу третьою за підсумками голосування, набравши 10,97% голосів виборців і, відповідно - 33 місця у Верховній Раді і представництво в коаліційному уряді. Перед А. Садовим відкривається широке поле політичної діяльності на користь народу єдиної і неподільної України.

TRADITION REVIVAL: “Atlas” restaurant Just before 2014 Lviv saw witness a glorious event: the reopening of the iconic Leopolitan restaurant Atlas – a true masterpiece of Galician culinary delight – at 45 Rynok Square. This famed establishment – one of the most popular haunts in the Austro-Hungarian Empire – served as a hotspot for some of Lviv’s most creative minds. Just a few of the famous personalities that frequented the bistro included: Oleksa Nowakiwsky, Bruno Schulz and Jan Kasprowicz. Local artists, painters, and historians did a masterful job in the restoration of the venue that was at one time a prominent symbol of its epoch. Just as before, the restaurant is divided into several halls – in the Barrel Hall guests can sit on empty barrels and drink beer from mugs, just like in the Austro-Hungarian times (although the mugs were chained to the walls then!).The White and Green Halls are decorated with caricatures of members of the Polish Parliament by prominent local painter Kazimierz Sichulski.The warm atmosphere at Atlas, combined with the rich Austro-Hungarian history and tasty Galician culinary delights, make the establishment an easy choice for Lviv’s Best Traditional Revival of 2014!

Endorsement of the Year Stars & Poppy Seeds The Ukrainian book Stars & Poppy Seeds (Зірки і макові зернята) won the prestigious BolognaRagazzi Award in March at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. The awards recognize the best children’s books of the year in terms of graphic and editorial design. The BolognaRagazzi awards are among the most prominent in the children’s publishing field as publishers submit only their finest works, ensuring an exceptional standard of quality among the candidates. Published by Lviv’s own Old Lion Publishing House (Vydavnytstvo Starogo Leva), Stars & Poppy Seeds was selected by an international jury of children’s publishing professionals based in France, UK, and Spain. The book, written and illustrated by Romana Romanyshyn and Andriy Lesiv, explores the theme of mathematics through a girl’s desire to count everything in the world. Each page becomes a pattern of numbers and shapes, dots and symbols, and flows into a collage of visual accoutrements and scientific knowledge.

Guests of the Year Shakhtar Donetsk The political events that have shaped 2014 in Ukraine have touched nearly every sphere of life, including causing chaos in Ukraine’s world of sports. Ukraine’s Superleague basketball competition started a month late, Donetsk’s HC Donbass hockey team was forced to cease operations for the season, and Ukraine’s Premiere League football competition also faced several challenges. Besides losing two squads due to the annexation of Crimea, several other Persha Liga teams were forced to relocate due to their proximity to the conflict in Donbass. One of those teams is current Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk, who made the welcome decision to call Arena Lviv home for their 2014–15 campaign. The five-time reigning Ukrainian champions were quick to feel at home in Ukraine’s cultural capital, as Manager Mircea Lucescu remembers: “The team liked the city and the atmosphere here was great.” Indeed, the city was quick to support the powerful Eastern Ukrainian team, and seemed to revel in the high-quality football the team brought to city as part of the UEFA Champion’s League competition. In 3 near-sellout games, the team drew an average of 32,000 fans. Indeed, even in regular Premiere League play, the team drew an average of over 20,000 fans – more than 20x what the team drew in other “home” games played in Kyiv. It looks like the team, which Leopolitan fans have given the moniker ‘FC Shakhtar Lviv’ – is here to stay as the club recently opened a fan store at Arena Lviv. This is great news for Western Ukrainian football fans, who are excited to continue to see some of Europe’s finest football competition, including in February 2015 when they are set to face possibly the world’s best team in Germany’s Bayern Munich.
Гості року Шахтар Донецьк Політичні події минулого року в Україні торкнулися практично всіх сфер життя, в тому числі, змінюючи плани у світі спорту. Українська баскетбольна Суперліга розпочалась на місяць пізніше, хокейна команда Донецька була змушена припинити свою діяльність протягом сезону, і українська футбольна Прем'єр-ліга також зіткнулася з низкою проблем. Крім втрати двох команд внаслідок анексії Криму, кілька інших команд Першої Ліги були змушені переїхати через близькість до конфлікту в Донбасі. Одна з цих команд – нинішній чемпіон України – донецький “Шахтар”, прийняла рішення зробити стадіон “Арена Львів” своїм “домашнім” в сезоні 2014–15. П'ятикратний діючий Чемпіон України дуже скоро відчув себе як вдома в культурній столиці України. Менеджер команди Мірча Луческу згадує: "Команді сподобалось місто і атмосфера тут була чудова". Дійсно, місто підтримало українську команду, і вболівальники насолоджувались висококласним футболом, який можна було побачити в рамках Ліги Чемпіонів УЄФА. Квитки на 3 матчі були розпродані майже повністю, в середньому на гру приходили 32 000 уболівальників. На звичайні матчі Прем'єр-ліги команда збирала в середньому близько 20 000 уболівальників, а на матчі в Києві приходило вдесятеро менше. Львівські футбольні фанати вже навіть встигли вигадати жартівливе прізвисько – “Шахтар Львів” і донеччани починають пускати коріння у столиці Західної України – їх клуб нещодавно відкрив магазин своєї футбольної атрибутики на стадіоні “Арена Львів”. Це добра новина для футбольних уболівальників, які раді з такої нагоди побачити деякі з найкращих футбольних поєдинків чемпіонату Європи, серед яких довгоочікувана гра Шахтаря з легендарною “Баварією” Мюнхен в лютому.

beauty Story of the Year Miss Lviv Wins Miss Ukraine Little did Lviv’s darling Andriana Khasanshin know that she was in for the year of her life when she bested over 200 of Lviv’s most attractive and talented ladies at the Miss Lviv casting show at Rafinad back in February. The law student from Lviv Polytechnic National University would later qualify for Miss Ukraine after winning an elegant Miss Lviv pageant at Lviv’s opulent Opera & Ballet Theatre in May. The 20-year-old was named Miss Ukraine at a subdued event in Kyiv this summer that saw beauties from across Ukraine forego the traditional bikinis and evening gowns to instead bake sweets for soldiers in the hospital after sustaining injuries from fighting in the ATO. Khasanshin made Lviv and Ukraine proud representing our city and country elegantly at the Miss World pageant in London, UK.

А вже в травні 20-річна студентка юридичного факультету Львівського національного політехнічного університету з’явилась в розкішному театралізованому шоу – конкурсі “Міс Львів” на сцені львівського Оперного театру. На фіналі конкурсу влітку того ж року в Києві, де чарівна львів’янка здобула титул “Міс Україна”, претендентки на титул відмовились від традиційних показів у бікіні і вечірніх сукнях, натомість випікали солодощі в госпіталях для поранених учасників АТО. Андріана також з гордістю представляла Львів і Україну на конкурсі “Міс Світу” в Лондоні у грудні.

Astoria Hotel Celebrates 100 YEARS

viv’s famed Astoria Hotel celebrated its centenary jubilee in style on December 19th. Built in 1914 in the very heart of the city near the majestic Opera House, the hotel was named Astoria at the very beginning. The hotel was open even during the two World Wars, allowing visitors to literally witness the fall of empires and other unpredictable events in Leopolitan history. For much of its history the hotel took the name ‘Kyiv’; however, after its 2013 renovation, it reclaimed its original moniker. The hotel now offers guests 32 Classic rooms, 6 Comfort rooms, 3 Apartment rooms, and conference services to go along with a first-class menu at its onsite restaurant Mon Chef. Hotel Astoria hosted a series of events to honour this significant milestone, including a gala dinner for its business partners and dearest friends. This magical evening was captured by Lviv Today so that everyone could take a look at the amazing photos to see just how this iconic Lviv hotel honoured its guests, traditions, and legacy. Rhythmic gymnasts Lviv’s Halychyna Sports Palace was home to over 250 Ukrainian rhythmic gymnasts on December 20-21 as part of the Winter Fairytale competition that traditionally marks the beginning of the holiday season. Featuring nearly 40 teams from nearly every region of Ukraine – and even Poland – the Winter Fairytale competition has since 2004 attracted top rhythmic gymnasts to Lviv and continues to promote a healthy lifestyle for young athletes.
Художня гімнастика У львівському палаці спорту “Галичина” 20-21 грудня пройшов 10-й міжнародний турнір з художньої гімнастики “Зимова казка”. До Львова приїхали 40 команд майже з усіх областей України, а також з польського Кракова – загалом, понад 250 учасників. Ці змагання, що проводяться з 2004 і завжди збирають під своїми прапорами найкращих гімнасток, сприяють розвитку спортивної майстерності і пропагують здоровий спосіб життя серед молоді.

Lviv’s Halychanka women’s handball team, which is now contender to the title of gold medals winner defeated current Ukrainian Championship winners team “Karpaty” (Uzhhorod) with the score 25:23. Clever coaching by Vasyl Kozar helped players to grasp victory at match’s last minutes and now “Halychanka” tops the rating table of the SuperLegue. As best player of the match came Iryna Stelmakh who scored 11 points. The team now looks forward to meeting the Greek squad Amyntas Amyntaiou on February 14–15, in the Round of 16. Both matches are agreed to take place at local “Halychyna” sport palace.
It seems Lviv’s Politekhnika-Halychyna has hit rock-bottom as the team continues to ride a 10-game losing streak that saw the boys in green go winless in the calendar month of December. Combined with a 7-game losing streak to start the season, the team now sits in last place in the 11-team league with a woeful 1-20 record. In fact, the team seems to be performing progressively more poorly, as they have lost their last 6 games by an average of nearly 24 points. This includes a loss 16-point loss to 10th-place DniproAzot – the only team they have managed to beat yet this season. The team will need all the support they can get when they host Zaporizhiya’s Ferro-ZNTU at the Lviv Sports Palace on February 7th.

У матчі лідерів українського жіночого гандболу, головних претенденток на золоті медалі чемпіонату гандболістки львівської «Галичанки» у надзвичайно напруженому матчі здолали чемпіона України останніх років – ужгородські «Карпати» – 25:23. Підопічні Василя Козаря вирвали перемогу на заключних хвилинах матчу. Найкращим голеодором у львів’янок стала Ірина Стельмах (11 м’ячів). Зараз «Галичанка» очолила турнірну таблицю Суперліги. А вже 14-ого та 15-ого лютого гандболістки проведуть два матчі 1/8 фіналу «Кубка Виклику». Нагадаємо, суперником «галичанок» на цій стадії буде грецька команда «Амінтас Амінтау». За згодою обох сторін, обидва матчі пройдуть у Львові у палаці спорту «Галичина».
Здається, смуга невдач переслідує БК “Політехніка-Галичина” – до кінця року наші хлопці прийшли з 10 програшами і їх результати в турнірній таблиці вельми невтішні. Команда займає останнє місце серед 11 команд ліги з результатом 1-20. На жаль, проглядається тенденція до погіршення, останні 7 матчів були програні з розривом в середньому майже 24 очка. Львів’яни програли 72:88 навіть команді “ДніпроАЗОТ” (десяте місце) - єдиній команді, яку їм вдалось перемогти в цьому сезоні. Наша команда повинна зібратись з силами і мати всю необхідну підтримку для поєдинку із запорізьким клубом “Ферро-ЗНТУ” на своєму полі 7 лютого.

In this issue of Lviv Today Markian Malskyy, Partner of Arzinger law firm, Head of West Ukrainian Branch Office, attorney-at-law, PhD, is answering the following question: Special electronic accounts in banks for VAT taxpayers. Starting from 1 January, 2015 special electronic accounts in banks will be opened for VAT taxpayers. The Law "On amendments to The Tax Code of Ukraine and Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine (concerning tax reform)" was signed by the President and officially published in "Holos Ukrayiny" ("Voice of Ukraine") on 31 December, 2014 and came into force on 1 January, 2015. This law increases the "threshold" for obligatory registration of an entity as the VAT taxpayer up to 1 million UAH (earlier - 300 000 UAH). Besides, testing mode for appliance of the VAT managing electronic system is foreseen in the period from 1 February till 1 July 2015. It is specified in the chapter XX "Transitional provisions" of the Law, that all VAT invoices and offset calculations (including those that are not provided for customers, are issued for the transactions of goods/service delivery or are exempted from taxation) should be registered in the Unified register of tax invoices regardless the amount of VAT in each of them starting from 1 February, 2015. The penalty for the delay in the registration of VAT invoices in the Unified register will not be applied to taxpayers in the transitional period. The new system of the VAT electronic managing will provide exporters and importers with a possibility to recover VAT from the state budget automatically for one month earlier than it was. The establishment of the new system excludes the possibility of a paper credit formation and unlawful reimbursement VAT from the budget, that, in its turn, will contribute to the increasing of the incoming receivables. An additional point is that the rate of shadow economy and state support for VAT managing will decrease. The electronic system will include three main elements: the Unified register of tax invoices, the bank, where all VAT taxpayers will have accounts, and the data bases of the customhouse concerning information about goods import and export. Starting from 1 January, 2015 electronic accounts in the bank will be opened automatically for all VAT taxpayers. The bank will be established and controlled by the National Bank of Ukraine. All VAT invoices will be electronically registered in the Unified register. To do this a taxpayer should have sufficient amount of the tax credit, that is confirmed by the VAT invoices registered in the Unified register and by VAT, that is paid for the goods import. The establishment of the electronic management is expected to lead to the decrease of the pressure on business, reduction of the human factor influence and the decline of the corruption. The amount of different verifications, that are rather onerous for business, is supposed to decrease, such as the business verification of the whole "chain of deliveries to the manufacturer or importer".
