Lviv a Tourist Mecca Now More Than Ever W

hile Western media continue to highlight the dreadful situation in Eastern Ukraine, it is easy for Westerners to forget that life still goes on for much of the rest of the country. While the war certainly continues to affect the lives of all Ukrainians, many Westerners seem to have no idea just how far away the conflict is from the Western Ukrainian capital of Lviv. To put it in context, Lviv is over 1200 km from Donetsk; or the same distance as Lviv to London. For our American readers – that is about the same distance as from New York to Chicago. While the situation in the east remains volatile, there is little chance that the personal security of tourists to Lviv would be in any more danger than in any other European city of a similar size. As the trees begin to bloom, pubs and restaurants open their outdoor patios, and skirts and high heels replace, well, skirts, high heels and jackets – a look at this month’s issue shows that Lviv remains one of Europe’s hidden jewels for a weekend getaway. From our look at unique holiday getaways around

Western Ukraine, to the beautiful ladies of Lviv Fashion Week, to – as anyways – next month's rich schedule of artistic and musical performances and festivals, it's important to let our Western friends know that Lviv is still a thriving, cultural capital. For the travellers that count their quarters, there is unlikely to be a city on the entire continent that is friendlier to your pocketbook. The current exchange rate has made purchasing already inexpensive accommodations and meals even more inexpensive. What’s more, unlike many other popular destinations, you won’t need to book weeks in advance to find a premiere place right in the heart of the city overlooking the picturesque Ploshcha Rynok. So this summer, let your friends know that Western Ukraine is safe, Lviv is welcoming, and a wonderful Western Ukrainian adventure awaits them. And if they don’t know where to begin – I’m sure you know just what magazine to show them. Lee Reaney

Batyars on Bicycles – Lviv’s First Tweed Run May 2nd, 12:00 in Rynok Square “Batyars on Bicycles” is Lviv’s first retro bike ride with a bit of style. Modelled after London’s famed “Tweed Run”, participants will take to the streets in their well-pressed best to cycle through the city’s iconic landmarks. Along the way, riders will stop for tea time and a picnic. Now look here – proper attire is expected. The term “overdressed” simply does not exist in the vocabulary of Lviv’s true batyars. What is a batyar you ask? Well a batyar is a witty, gallant, and romantic bloke that dresses in a hat and bow tie and finds himself in many crazy adventures and romantic affairs, especially with all of Lviv’s sharply-dressed kobitas around. Batyars and kobitas alike will be dressed in their best tweed suits, plus furs, bow ties, and jaunty flat caps, so do your best to win the Best Dressed Man and Woman prizes. Suggested attire for the ride include: woollen jumpers; coats; jerseys; tweed jackets; cycling skirts and perhaps a sporty cycling cape for the ladies; with cravats or ties for the gentlemen; and a sneaky hip flask for some post-ride sustenance. While event organizers are hoping to avoid inclement weather, Mother Nature can sometimes throw horror in our faces. A full-sized umbrella can be tricky on a bicycle, but a sturdy Macintosh or cape might not go amiss. Be sure to dust off your vintage velocipede for the ride, as there will be prizes awarded for the Best Vintage Bicycle. Being a city known for its fine coffeehouse culture, riders in Lviv will surely stop for a cup of coffee along the way. Remember not to rush yourself, as afternoon coffee is one of life’s great luxuries! Of course, dining al fresco is an art form all its own and we encourage you to pack a beautiful picnic basket for our Picnic Break at Ivan Franko park. Dispense with the good silver, but do remember to pop a colourful blanket in the basket! We encourage everyone that’s interested to sign up at: www.roverchic.com/tweedrun

Slavik’s Fashion on Display April 22 – May 9 at Dzyga Gallery (35 Virmenska St.) You don’t need to be rich to be famous. The homeless, despite the many difficulties they face, can become welcomed or even celebrated personalities in their own neighbourhoods and cities. Slavik – a 55-year-old fashion-conscious homeless Leopolitan – is one such character. Slavik is a homeless gypsy. Yet he is quite special as his lifestyle differs from many other outcasts – he does not carry many bags or rummage through trash cans; he does not talk to other homeless people and other gypsies don’t have business with him. No one seems to know much about the mysterious Slavik. While it doesn’t seem like he has a place to call home, he has quite the collection of found and received clothes – enough, in fact, for him to change at least once a day. Besides every day’s outfit change (sometimes twice daily!), he regularly changes his hairdo and keeps his beard and armpits shaved. Slavik roams Lviv’s cobblestone streets asking for change, but tries not to annoy anyone. He regularly drinks alcohol – mostly beer – but yet does not seem to be an alcoholic. It is essential for Slavik that nobody interferes with or ruins his internal peace. Slavik first came to the attention of local photographer Yurko Dyachyshyn, who began shooting Slavik after a chance encounter and has created a 100-photo series entitled “Slavik’s Fashion”. During the two years that he collected the photos, Slavik got used to the photographers attention. But it wasn’t about scheduled daily meetings, just about the special occasions when the two of them happened to meet. This evolved into an interesting relationship until Slavik mysteriously disappeared from the streets of Lviv early in January of 2013. The entrance is free of charge.

Engineering Job Fair

Hot Air Balloon Festival

Lviv Polytechnic National University (12 Bandera St.)

Each year, the southwestern resort town of Kamianets-Podilskyi welcomes balloon pilots, crews, and spellbound spectators to Western Ukraine’s largest hot air ballooning festival. For three days every May dozens of colourful balloons float high above the city each morning as dawn breaks over the majestic Smotrych River. It’s no wonder that this visual feast is considered to be Ukraine’s most-photographed event. “Mass ascensions” – where dozens of balloons lift off into the morning sky, are held each festival day after “dawn patrol” has carefully examined the morning’s weather conditions. When dawn patrol gives the green light, balloons rise together in one harmonious and awe-inspiring liftoff. The sight of dozens of balloons in the sky is just as inspiring for first-time visitors as it continues to be for more seasoned Kamianets-Podilskyi hot air balloon festivalgoers. In addition to the mass ascensions, many other events are held during the balloon fiesta at the fortress city. Balloon enthusiasts fill the launch field and walk among the tethered balloons of every colour, shape, and size. As the propane burners slowly inflate the multi-coloured balloons against a dark sky, they seem to flicker like giant, psychedelic light bulbs. More than 5000 visitors attend the hot air balloon festival each year, so be sure to make your plans early to join the fun. You’ll want to make sure to book your hotel in advance, so that you don’t miss out on your chance to experience this one-of-a-kind event – there really is no other hot air balloon festival like it. Lviv’s annual Gorgany Half Marathon is set to take place on Sunday, April 26th, with its start line in front of the city’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre. The half marathon is a road running event that distinguishes itself from its Olympic cousin (the full marathon) by being run at half the distance: 21 kilometres. Participation in the sport has seen a resurgence in the last few years as it has become known as a challenging distance that doesn’t require the same level of time and training commitment as a full marathon. In fact, Running USA has called it the single, fastest-growing type of race. Lviv’s Gorgany Half Marathon was first held in 2010 and aims to popularize active sport and leisure activities among Leopolitans and guests of the city. Participants will be divided into several categories based on age and gender, and will then run 21 kilometres through the heart of Central Lviv, some of our most picturesque parks, and the forest in Vynnyky. The Gorgany is one of spring’s most popular sports activities in Lviv and is expected to attract both amateurs and seasoned sportspersons from around the city and across Western Ukraine. Lviv is set to host the Ukrainian Duathlon Championship on May 10th, where the route will begin and finish near the city centre’s centrepiece – the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre. Consisting of running and cycling, the sport is often used as training for its more famous Olympic cousin, triathlon. Without the need for the latter’s swimming, duathlon can be contested on nearly any terrain, although it is often raced on tarmac. While there are many duathlon specialists, the sport is usually used during the triathlon off-season for athletes to improve their run speed and bike power. This leads to duathlon events usually being held in spring or autumn to not clash with the summer triathlon season. The event, which is officially named the 2015 Lviv Duathlon Cup , will feature a 5 km run, followed by 20 km of cycling, and another 2.5 km run. This is half the distance used at the annual ITU Duathlon World Championships, where the elite athletes are also allowed to draft in the cycling portion. As the event is open to amateurs and professionals alike, Lviv Today encourages everyone interested – professional athletes, running and cycling enthusiasts, or just those interested in viewing – to visit this wonderful spring display of sport and health to enjoy charming Lviv’s relaxing atmosphere and be greeted by the warm hospitality of our citizens!

Lviv Duathlon Cup 2015

April 27th, 19:00 at Picasso Club (88 Zelena St.)

Lviv’s charming Lesya Ukrainka Drama Theatre is pleased to host a concert by Blaise Malaba, the 25-year-old bass dynamo from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Malaba has already been in Ukraine for four years and is currently studying in the Faculties of International Relations and Culture & Arts at Lviv’s Ivan Franko National University. He started his vocal career as a soloist in the church choir, continued with the student choir at university, and later with Lviv’s male choir. He began his vocal training in earnest in January 2012 under the tutelage of Leopolitan Orest Sydyr. Only a few months later he hosted his first recital and took part in the Mykola Lysenko International Music Competition. He became especially well known after qualifying for the semifinals of the popular “The Voice” television show in 2013. Malaba continues his vocal training under Professor Bogdan Bazylykut and continues to participate in music festivals and competitions. Leopolitan music lovers will be treated to a multilingual musical concert, with songs performed in five different languages: Ukrainian, English, Italian, French chanson, and Congolese rumba. A small band featuring piano, classical guitar, drums, and percussion will accompany this young talent. Malaba’s performances are noted for their powerful energy and his interactions with the audience, reminiscent of a young Bobby McFerrin. His direct and profound approach to music leaves the audience filled with a sense of wonder and harmony. Tickets run from 10-140 UAH. Onuka Concert April 29, 20:00 at KINO Event Hall (2 Chornovola Ave.) ONUKA is an up-and-coming Ukrainian band founded by Yevhen Filatov, the frontman for Maneken, and Nata Zhizhchenko, the former vocalist of Tomato Jaws. After working together on a few projects, the two decided to form ONUKA, and a short time later were able to build up an audience and achieve some success on the Ukrainian scene. The band debuted in 2013 with the single “Look” and released their premiere album, featuring 10 songs (8 in English, 2 in Ukrainian), just last October. The tracks showcase authentic Ukrainian folk instruments – such as the sopilka, bandura, and trembita – in a number of traditional Ukrainian melodies. Electronic adaptation harmoniously unites the music and vocals and led the disc to becoming one of the fastest selling albums on Ukrainian iTunes. ONUKA, meaning granddaughter, is a tribute to the vocalist’s grandfather (Oleksandr Shlyonchyk) – a recognized master of musical instruments. According to Nata, the man “defined for me [an] understanding and love for [the] motherland.” Currently the group has released two videos – 2013’s “Look” and 2015’s “Time”. In March, the group was awarded with the Yuna Ukrainian Music Award for “Discovery of the Year”. ONUKA promises to treat their Leopolitan fans with a spectacular show that will be like no other. Tickets range in price from 150-300 UAH. For more information, or for ticket booking, please visit www.gastroli.ua or call (080) 050 75 77.

"Look" і у 2015 р. – "Time".

interview with

onuka

ONUKA is a breath of fresh air for even the most experienced electronic music fans. The union of live instruments and “digits” infuses Ukrainian traditions with trendy beats to create a whole new sound that it is entirely impossible to forget. Nata Zhizhchenko, the lead vocalist of ONUKA, is a musician that simply cannot allow herself to be limited by boundaries. She is not afraid to experiment, whether it her work with the traditional Ukrainian instrument of the sopilka or her vocals, which she can completely change or sample during a performance. Prior to her arrival in Lviv, Ms. Zhizhchenko took time out of her schedule to answer some questions for Lviv Today.

LVIV TODAY  |  April 2015

How would you describe the music of ONUKA? In my point of view, ONUKA is the modern sound of Ukraine. Genres and formats are not of any importance. Emotion is the main thing created by music. Who is behind the stage image of ONUKA? Who invented it? And are there any plans to change it in the near future? The credit for the visual part of the group’s image goes to Patoka Studio, and Lesya Patoka in particular. She was the first person to believe in me and to inspire me to try this solo project. Of course our image will change – nothing is constant in this world. This is your first big solo concert in Lviv. However, you have been here before. Please tell us about your impressions of the city. Well, I would have to disagree with you. I played a concert here on December 13th which was also huge. At that concert the band was presented in extend format together with a brass trio. The experience was incredibly inspirational and the atmosphere was truly fabulous. Actually, all the time we spent in Lviv was for all of us somehow like a gift after hard work. The holiday spirit was already in the air and we all have very pleasant impressions. We know that you have dedicated the song Misto (The City) to your native Kyiv. What musical genre would you associate with Lviv? What would “the sound of Lviv” sound like by ONUKA? If such a song ever existed, it would be even more electronic with authentic sounds – probably something like Pierre Bucci or Nicolas Jaar. Lviv is often chosen as a shooting location for movies, TV series, ads, and videos. Have you ever thought about making a music video in Lviv? Not yet, but maybe sometime in the future. For now, we work on an urban and realistic video set in Kyiv. Leopolitans are very fond of jazz – the city regularly hosts jazz festivals. Would it be interesting for you to participate in one of them? Sure! It’s interesting as ONUKA could fit into the style of such festivals, where division into formats and genres is important. By the way – ONUKA will be taking part in ZahidFest 2015. It will be cool! What pleasant surprises do you have prepared for your Leopolitan fans? In your opinion, does our local audience differ from audiences in other cities? The Leopolitan audience has the opportunities to listen to not only Ukrainian artists, but also foreign ones. Leopolitans are experienced listeners with so many concerts and festivals, so it is not easy to surprise the local audience here. However, we hope we’ll manage as we are set to present a couple of new songs and play several new folk instruments! I will not reveal all of our secrets here, as there will be no surprises left for the concert! :) Some musicians complain that the tense situation in the country greatly influences their creative processes. What about you? Does the socio-political mood interfere with your work? Of course it plays a great role! Musicians are very sensitive people; they can’t stop feeling the general energy and mood of the country. I was greatly influenced by the events of 2014, which resulted in the creation of the songs Misto and Zavtra. Your debut album features 10 songs: 8 in English and 2 in Ukrainian. Is it possible to say that from the beginning, you are aiming to bring this Ukrainian group to the foreign market? Or maybe the English language is smoother for electronic music? Choice of language is, probably, just following my own traditions. In my previous groups of Tomato Jaws and KOOQLA, I also wrote songs only in English. However, ONUKA made me look differently at many other things. That’s how the songs from my native language came to life. I’m proud to say that in the future will be many more songs in Ukrainian! What are your personal plans for the near future? And tell us about ONUKA’s plans. Right now, my personal plans are the same as ONUKA’s plans, as this group has taken up all the time in my life from the moment it was created. We have started on a national tour, which includes stops in: Ivano-Frankivsk, Kharkiv, Chernivtsi, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovograd, Odesa, Rivne, Lutsk, Poltava, here in Lviv, and ending in Kyiv on June 6th. Presently, we are in discussions with a few other cities, but we have already confirmed those 11. The festival season starts in June and ONUKA plans to take part in the Poland’s European Stadium of Culture, Kyiv’s Krayina Mriy, Lviv’s ZahidFest, and Minsk’s Mirum, among others. We are also trying to finish up and release the video for Misto in time for City Day – we’ve been working at it for months now. And in autumn, we will release our new EP. LVIV TODAY  |  April 2015

LVIV’S UNSIGHTLY GRAFFITI ADDICTION L

viv is a beautiful city with an ugly problem. That problem is graffiti. Leopolitan buildings, storefronts, alleys, monuments – even cars – are crawling with tags, stencils, throwies, and other unsightly and unwanted graffiti. And as anyone who has ever sought addictions counselling before will tell you, the first step to kicking an addiction is admitting that there is a problem. This step is always the hardest, and maybe nowhere more so than in Lviv. Graffiti in Lviv is generally looked upon as an art form to be celebrated, rather than an illegal and unsightly rash of vandalism blotting our storied streets. Events such as ‘Lviv Graffiti Jam’ and ‘Respublica Street Art Fest’ celebrate the art of graffiti with competitions and workshops. The line between ‘graffiti’ – which by definition is an illicit activity – and ‘street art’ becomes so blurred that, like an alcoholic that refuses to seek help or even admit to having a problem, Lviv needs an intervention. So Lviv Today invites all those who have an interest in the beauty of the city, those who share the financial burden in graffiti vandalism, and those wanting to protect the expression of true artists while keeping unskilled scribble-hooligans away from UNESCO protected heritage sites, to join us for an intervention for Lviv’s addiction to graffiti.

Perspective 1: peer perceptions My dearest Lviv: We have been together such a long time. You know, from an early age I was drawn to your charming character and artistic ambition. I marvel at how you’ve grown from a quaint village full of hope and determination to a sprawling metropolis that swaggers with pride and patriotism. I remember some of your earliest artistic triumphs, like Ivan Franko and Solomiya Krushelnytska. And I can’t get enough of some of your modern treasures, such as Okean Elzy and Pik-

symbols, and inane tags. I’ve seen you binge-graffiti, leaving your mark on any flat surface you can find. It has become such a problem, my dear, that your addiction threatens to blight nearly every avenue that you have so skillfully constructed! But Lviv – I know the real you; the one that overflows with artistic talent. I’m telling you that it’s time you put down your bottle of spray-paint, cut up those stencils, and admit that you have an addiction to graffiti. I understand that your artistic side needs to get out, so I ask – no, I implore – you to use your talents for true ‘street art’ in designated areas only. The Lviv I fell in love with so long ago would understand this and work towards assigning more areas for this form of art instead of allowing the greatest number of buildings in the city centre to be defaced. Am I getting through to you?

Perspective 2: sibling sadness Hey Brother: It’s been some time since we’ve had a real chat, eh? I see you’ve been busy over the course of the last nine months or so. So typical of you, fomenting revolution and such. You know, you were always the sibling we looked up to. You had this sort of style; this effortless swagger that we all tried to emulate. When the rest of us would wear a suit and tie, you’d be there, shades and scarf with your shirtcollar opened. This is the Lviv I like to remember. What happened to you, dude? I see your streets all tattooed with these pitiful little etches. Some of your finest features are plastered in ink, like your churches and your majestic monuments. You know that you gotta get yourself cleaned up, right? You are a tourism centre – you have a responsibility to look and to act on your best behaviour. Besides, little brother, I can’t be lending you any more money, OK? Not until you’re cleaned up at least. And you know how much it costs to get cleaned up, right? Take Oklahoma City – he’s roughly your shape and build – it costs him USD 1.5 million USD every year to keep clean. Could you imagine what you could do with that kind of money? Maybe that downtown river project you’ve been eyeing up could finally be yours. Or, could you imagine, nicer roads and sidewalks? All I’m saying dude, is that it’s time to kick your habit. I’ll be there to float you once I know you’re clean.

Perspective 3: parental pain

kardiyska Tertsiya. I’ve attended your beautiful exhibitions at your many art galleries. And I’ve marvelled at your wonderful murals as harbingers of the Ukrainian cultural heartbeat. However, it seems that your insatiable desire for artistic genius has led you down some dark alleys – alleys that you’ve decided to tag with untalented stencils, obnoxious political

Lviv. Lviv, Lviv, Lviv, Lviv, Lviv. What are we to do with you? You know that we’ve always tried to encourage your artistic growth. We supported your efforts to try different styles, like Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. We even stood by you when you experimented with that tasteless Soviet style. We were there, proud as parents could be, when your talent was globally recognized by UNESCO in 1998. But we can’t stand idly by while you systematically destroy your reputation as the artistic gem of Central Europe. We could look at imposing draconian prison sentences for this deviant behaviour. It seems to have worked for your messed-up cousin Minsk; not a sign of graffiti to be found there. But we figure that approach won’t work with your rebellious nature. That being said, we cannot let you continue to harm yourself the way LVIV TODAY  |  April 2015

exploring lviv you’ve been doing. It seems that you haven’t responded to other punitive measures either; certainly the fines starting at UAH 340 have done nothing to prevent you from harming yourself. So let’s look at other options. If you kick your graffiti addiction, we can work with you to find more legal places for your legitimate street art. We admit that there are tourists that enjoy this facet of your artistic side. We regularly hear compliments of your work near Ivan Franko Park. But we just as regularly hear of your more poorly thought-out scrawlings all over your scenic parks and buildings. If we catch you doing this sort of thing again in the future, we will be forced to make you clean it up. Lviv – remember we love you and are doing this for your own good. No more graffiti. You’re too talented for this dishonourable dependency.

Time to kick the habit In conclusion, on behalf of all of your loved ones – family, friends, visitors, and admirers – it’s time to realize that you have a problem with graffiti. We all love you very much and hate to see what has become of you. We are here to help you work through your addiction and to return to the healthy, happy, and beautiful Lviv we have all come to love and respect. Remember to honour your wonderful history and heritage, to embrace your role as the artistic gem of Central Europe, and to live up to the responsibilities of being a globally-recognized artistic wonder. A dose of creative street art can be part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. However, please remember that we can no longer accept this addiction that is destroying our beloved Lviv. We are here for you always. Article & Photography: Lee Reaney

Bach Marathon in Lviv

Iryna Gintova, violin

LVIV SOCIETY

The whole world united on March 21st to celebrate the 330th birthday of the legendary composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Like the rest of the world, Leopolitans music lovers joined the “Bach in the Subways” worldwide initiative designed to celebrate and promote the immortal musical legacy of J.S. Bach. Special delight for Leopolitan music lovers and guests of the city was Lviv’s Bach Marathon – a 24-hour live performance of Bach’s works. More than 600 musicians from Ukraine and abroad participated in the Marathon’s 20 concerts in an effort to promote the rich and diverse legacy of the renowned musical genius. The Bach Marathon in Lviv started at midnight with one of the greatest works of the Baroque mastermind – High Mass – and finished 26 hours later with the Easter Oratorio. The event, which became colorful highlight of Lviv’s cultural life set national record in nomination “Mass public events” for the longest performance of Bach’s music. The record was registered by official representative of Ukraine’s book of records and the certificate was awarded to the event’s organizers – lviv Philharmonic theatre administration. On March 21st itself, recorded Bach music could be heard in a number of ‘non-classical’ public places as well, such as coffee shops, restaurants, and even trams. For the entire month, starting from March 2nd, Leopolitans and guests of the city enjoyed riding the “Bach Tram” – an ordinary city tram serving the Central Railway Station – City Centre route that was Bach-branded to mark the occasion, in addition to other trams featuring Bach’s music on various routs.

Evhen Kruk and Mariya Tkachyk, string lineup of the “INSO-Lviv” orchestra, conductor Natalya Ponomarchuk (Dniropetrovsk)

HOLIDAY GETAWAYS

TRIPS FROM LVIV U

krainians enjoy number of holidays throughout the year – there are religious holidays such as Orthodox Christmas, Easter and Holy Trinity, newly accepted Western holidays like St. Valentine Day, Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, plus those celebrating Ukraine’s relatively new independence – Independence Day and Constitution Day. Others, Labor Days and Victory Day have their roots in Soviet times. Under the Soviets, Labor Days was one of the greatest holidays of the year – with colorful demonstrations and celebration of the workers and collective farmers. Today, practically nobody bothers with parades, transparency and that entire Soviet staff (surely except for some energetic old people, who try to revive those "good old days"). People just stay at home and rest or use those holidays for short trips away from city as sometimes, it’s the best and the only way to unwind after a long week. But it can be daunting to decide where to dedicate your money when you only have a few days time. To help you choose the best destinations for maximizing your weekend, Lviv Today compiled places with just the right ratio of accessibility, affordability and entertainment to leave you rejuvenated and ready to return to the grind on Monday.

THE VALLEY OF NARCISSI

The Valley of narcissi, located in Kireshi Village in only few kilometers from Khust (Zakarpattia region), is the only place in Ukraine, where the narrow-leaved narcissus – Narcissus Angustifolius aka Narcissus poeticus – is blooming in natural environment. And it’s the biggest natural seat of Narcissus poeticus in Europe as it covers the area of 257 hectares. There are similar, but smaller Narcissi fields in the Alps and the Balkans and in Romania, but only here in Khust these

flowers grow at the amazing height almost 1,000 meters lower than elsewhere in Europe. Highlands are considered its natural environment, not valleys with their warmer climate. Researchers claim that the Narcissus appeared here back in the Ice Age, when mud poured into the valley from the surrounding mountains and brought the roots of the mountainous ecosystem. The Valley of Narcissi is protected by the government and makes part of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, which in 1992 was included into the international network of Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO. There’s no walking among the Narcissi, only along the paved roads. And it's forbidden to pick flowers in the Valley. Visiting time is crucial for the Valley; it only makes sense to come

38

here when it is in full blossom. Depending on the weather in spring, each year the blossoming period slightly fluctuates: it can be as early as in late April and up to mid-May. Most Ukrainians arrive to the Valley during May holidays of 1-9. So plan your trip and step into a Narcissi wonderland! Distance from Lviv: 270 km

"SAKURA FEST"

One the biggest proud of Uzhhorod is the unique alley of rare sakuras (cherries) planted on the both sides of the river Uzh. It is the longest and the most amazing alley in Europe with more than thousand Japanese cherries trees which with their soft pink blossom at the end of late April and in early May turn the city into the fantastic garden. Delicate cherry flowers and exciting aroma attracts thousands of tourists to visit Uzhhorod in spring and admire this colorful and tender miracle. These unique trees grow only in three places in the world: Japan, several U.S. states and in Uzhhorod. Moreover, in these days – roughly form April 25, the city launches the International Festival of Music and Creativity "Sakura Fest" and the symbol of it is the romantic magician Count Sakura, who appears in all events of Uzhhorod and entertains visitors and guests of the city. In Uzhhorod almost at the same time with "Sakura Fest" the festival of wine and honey “Sunny drink” takes place already for eight years in a row. At this festival not only Transcarpatia masters demonstrate their products but representatives of other parts of Ukraine and foreign neighbors are boasting their goods. Annualy, in the beginning of May city residents do their best to preserve and enlarge sakura alley, planting new seedlings, because according to Japanese wisdom to those who personally plants sakura comes good luck and good fortune. KRYVORIVNYA IN THE CARPATHIANS

For anyone who would like to explore the history of Hutsul traditions and who wants to enjoy one of the most picturesque destinations in the Carpathians, Kryvorivnya is the ideal location to explore. The village is most definitely not for the faint hearted, as it was not named Kryvorivnya meaning "Crooked Plain" without reason. Kryvorivnya's landscape is extremely mountainous, and to get to some of the homes would probably qualify as a strenuous hike for skilled hikers. Yet it has charm, historical attractions and sites that are so beautiful that it will leave visitors speechless. The Hutsuls are an ancient ethno-cultural community who inhabited the Carpathian Mountains, with the highest concentration LVIV TODAY  |  April 2015

LVIV TRAVEL of Hutsuls being in Ukraine and also spread into Romania. These highlanders are very well respected and the culture still lives on today. One of their most famous traditions is their immaculate craftsmanship skills, as their handmade goods show attention to detail and are always colorful. Some of the works include rugs, pottery, sculptures, metal work, woodwork, egg decorating and weaving. They are also known for their lively dances and music. Kryvorivnya lies along the banks of the Cheremosh River, and has been a place of refuge, tranquility and inspiration for historians researching the Hutsuls, as well as many famous Ukrainian writers, including Lesya Ukrayinka and Ivan Franko. Not only was the village a pilgrimage destination for many poets, politicians and writers but many also stayed in Kryvorivnya, leading to the village getting unofficial name of "Ukrainian Athens". This breathtaking village has a few very noteworthy attractions that visitors are recommended to explore, such as the old wooden church and belfry. The church was established in 1719 and the construction of this wooden structure was completed in 1818. It features magnificent nineteenth century painted murals. Kryvorivnya also features three wonderful museums that visitors can attend namely the M. Hrushevsky Museum, the Hutsul Grazhda Museum and the Ivan Franko Literary Memorial Museum. A TOUR OF SOKAL

In the Ukrainian language, the word sokal refers to a falcon, leading to the belief that the town of Sokal was named after this beautiful bird of prey. The town was mentioned in documents dating back to 1377, and was granted the Magdeburg Law in the year 1424, allowing the residents to cut trees down for the building and development of the town. The peaceful Buh river that runs through the town always supplied it residents with fish and today is a beautiful feature of the town. Located in the Lviv region, the town of Sokal is situated in a district of its own, namely the Sokal District. The town has a wonderful history and reminders of its past are scattered across the landscape. It used to fall under Poland during the years of 1918 to 1944, but as a part of Ukraine, the town has grown into a wonderful attraction, while remaining picturesque and quaint in certain ways. There are many attractions in the town of Sokal for visitors to enjoy and tourists will find the town to be fascinating and wonderful to explore. Some of the landmark structures featured in Sokal include the amazing St Peter and St Paul’s Church, a nineteenth century chapel, the sixteenth century St Nicholas Church, the Bernardine Monastery and the remains of a 1762 synagogue that is a significant landmark in the city. Sokal City Hall is another magnificent structure to visit, with its neatly painted and well maintained features, and its beautiful clock tower on the roof. Sokal might be one of the smaller cities in Ukraine, with an estimated population of approximately twenty-two thousand, but it is most certainly a picturesque and interesting destination. It is a recommended attraction in the country and visitors to this unique town will not be disappointed. Distance from Lviv: 85 km LVIV TODAY  |  April 2015

BUCHACH – A LESSER KNOWN BUT DELIGHTFUL DESTINATION

Like most towns and cities in Ukraine, Buchach is a historic town that survived war and battles. With a population of approximately twelve thousand, Buchach is not a very big town, but the community is close knit. With its location on the Strypa river, the town is a beautiful destination to visit while touring Ukraine. It is quaint and surrounded by natural wonders. Located near Lviv, in the Ternopil region, Buchach invites visitors to explore its rich history and discover the many noteworthy sights and attractions that it has to offer. It is uncertain when exactly the town of Buchach was established as it is only mentioned in documents for the first time in the year 1397. Galicia had been under Polish rule for almost fifty years by then, and it was while the area was ruled by Poland that many Jewish, Polish and other community members relocated to Buchach. It was viewed as a shelter, as the majority of the population that made the town their home was of the Jewish religion. A strong Jewish presence is still alive today, but many of the truly historic buildings have been destroyed to be replaced by new innovative structures, which many believe was a bid for residents to forget the past. However, there are still a number of attractions that will be of interest to international and Ukrainian tourists. The Buchach Old City Hall is definitely a noteworthy sight, as the building was collaboration between the well- known sculptor Johann Georg Pinsel and Bernard Meretyn, who was an architect. The St. Mykola Church is another place of interest, as is the Taras Shevchenko monument and the old castle ruins.

A few world famous people were also born in Buchach, such as the acting teacher Lee Strasberg, who was born in 1901, and the legendary Simon Wiesenthal, born in 1908, and better known as the man who demanded justice for many by pursuing war criminals. Buchach has numerous activities and landscapes to walk through, making the town of Buchach a recommended destination. Why not pay a visit to this place of history, myth and legend. LABOUR MARKET INDEX In this issue of Lviv Today Markian Malskyy, Partner of Arzinger law firm, Head of West Ukrainian Branch Office, attorney-at-law, PhD, is answering the following question: What is the quorum of the voting shares for Joint-Stock Company in Ukraine and is it established at the legislative level? A general shareholders meeting of Joint-Stock Company is eligible subject to the participation registration of shareholders jointly owning more than 50 percent of the voting shares. This requirement is regulated by the Article 41 of the Law of Ukraine on Joint Stock Companies. It is worth saying that this provision come into force on 27 March 2015 with adoption the Amendments to the Law on Joint StockCompanies dated 19.03.2015 No. 272-VIII (hereinafter, the Law). Before these Amendments the quorum for JSCs was 60 percent of the voting shares. Also, the Law empowers a JSC’s general shareholders’ meeting to decide on shortened dividend payment terms. If dividends are not paid in due time, shareholders are entitled to apply to notaries for writs of execution, under which debts are recovered without recourse. The list of such documents shall be set by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. The Law applies only to JSCs and does not change the quorum requirements for meetings of other legal entities, including limited liability companies. It should be noted that the Law will influence big companies, in which the minority shareholders have repeatedly blocked the conduct of general shareholders’ meetings, the change of management as well as the payment of dividends. In our view, the establishment of a quorum at the legislative level was not necessary. Thus, in some European countries the law does not set any quorum for general shareholders’ meetings. In the Anglo-Saxon law system, there are no quorum requirements for general shareholders’ meetings at all, while in the US and the UK the eligible number of shareholders is that of the shareholders attending the meeting. We believe that the most reasonable solution is to entitle shareholders to determine the quorum, while the relevant provision should be integrated in articles of association rather than at the legislative level. We would recommend that JSCs should amend their articles of association to bring them into line with the Law. The Law does not prescribe the term for such amendments or liability for failure to make them. However, the provisions of the Law prevail over JSCs’ articles of association regardless of whether the latter have been brought into line with such provisions.

Friendly match for Ukrainian football team

Just days after hanging with a world class Spain side in a disappointing 0:1 draw in Seville in UEFA Euro 2016 qualification action, our national team took on Latvia in an international friendly match hosted here at Arena Lviv. A confident Ukrainian side led by Andriy Yarmolenko and former FC Karpaty Lviv defender Artem Fedetskyi looked to hone their skills and practice their formations against a squad that has never defeated our boys in blue and yellow. The home side controlled the action for most of the night and

Yarmolenko’s 35’ goal sent the crowd into a tizzy. Leopolitan football fans were jumping and singing throughout and the mood was only dampered when Latvia’s Vitalijis Maksimenko scored from a corner on the final kick of the game. The 95th-ranked Latvians had previously lost both encounters with the 31st-ranked Ukrainians by scores of 1:0 back in the early Andriy Shevchenko era. Ukraine currently sits 3rd in Euro 2016 Group C qualifying and will face Luxembourg next on June 14th right here in Lviv..

In the beginning of April Lviv’s Halychanka women’s handball team played two matches within EHF Challenge Cup semifinals. On that stage the team played against Polish squad “Pogon Baltica”. In the first semi-final match, which was played on April 4th in Szczecin Lviv players were defeated by Polish team with minimal score 28:29. Unfortunately, second semi final match, which took place on April 11th in Lviv was also unlucky for our team – Halychanka lost with the score 21:25. However, each defeat adds experience and “Halychanka” is set to grow up in playing skills, so in the future we are expecting more interesting and hectic matches, in which Lviv’s team will come as winner.

Mariya Muzychuk, a 22-year-old student of a chess school in Stryi (Lviv Region), was recently crowned the 15th Women’s World Chess Champion after defeating Russian Natalia Pogonina 2.5-1.5 at the FIDE Women’s Chess World Championships. The result was never much in doubt; Mariya dominated the match, was never behind in any individual game, and nearly decided the set in the third game. Maria is a two-time Ukrainian Champion (2012 & 2013), played on Ukraine’s 2013 World and European Team Champions, and helped Ukraine to bronze in the 2012 and 2014 Chess Olympiads. She is the younger sister of Anna Muzychuk, a GM since 2012, reigning Women’s World Blitz Champion, and currently ranked 4th in the world. With the win, Maria also becomes a GM. Chess is hugely popular in Lviv and is regularly played in parks and on the streets. Popular tourist photographs are of old men playing along the city’s iconic Prospekt Svoboda. Lviv has a proud chess tradition and the sisters follow a long line of world-class chess players that hail from the area, including: Alexander Beliavsky, Oleg Romanishin, Vasily Ivanchuk, and the highly-regarded chess trainer Adrian Mikhalchishin. The event closed with a ceremony on April 6th that saw players receive their prize money ($60,000 for first place), medals by Adamas Fine Jewelry, and cups by the Imperial Porcelain Factory. Lviv Today would like to congratulate Maria on her remarkable achievement.
