ince our first issue in 2008, Lviv Today has proudly promoted the city as ‘The Heart of Europe’. We were here when the Western Ukrainian capital welcomed the continent to the EURO 2012 football championships. We applauded the audacious bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. We watched as events like Alfa Jazz grew into world-class celebrations that draw Europeans and guests from all over the world. And we welcome the many start-ups and foreign companies that are driving the city’s booming IT industry. Yet it is 2017 that Lviv will really see its reputation as Ukraine’s ‘most European city’ pay off.

Ukrainian Reforms Lead to EU Visa Liberalisation It has been a long, hard slog since the dramatic events of 2013-14 when 100 protesters paid the ultimate price for their beliefs in a less corrupt, more European Ukraine. Reforms have been slow to come along, but the international community is recognising their enactments. The Association Agreement with the EU was implemented last year, a free trade deal with Canada will go into effect this year, and the International Monetary Fund continues to provide cash as their requirements for reform continue to be met. This will lead to the EU dropping the visa requirement for Ukrainian citizens as early as June of this year – a very tangible reward for the hard

work undertaken in recent years. In light of these developments, some EU countries – including Poland – have aggressively targeted Ukrainians as both workers and students.

European Airlines See Big Opportunity The rosy outlook is attracting some of Europe’s most attractive airlines to the city. Wizz Air returned to Lviv last month with a flight to Wroclaw, Poland and Ryanair looks set to join them this summer. The airport is actively recruiting other budget airlines, including AirBaltic, Czech Airlines, and Norwegian – which will soon offer trans-Atlantic flights for as little as 150 EUR from Western Europe. Lviv has already seen a large increase in air traffic and capacity in 2016 and 2017, so the attraction of these airlines is an acceptance of the reality that Ukraine is roaring back. The increased ease of trade and travel with the EU and Canada is a welcome sign for a community that counts its tourism, restaurant, and hotel industries as key economic drivers. Lviv Fashion Week – Autumn / Winter 2017 March 23–26 at Danylo Halytskyi International Airport and locations around the city

The Lviv Fashion Week (LFW) Autumn / Winter 2017 edition is all set to roll its red carpet into town from March 23–26. This glamorous event will be mainly hosted at the Danylo Halytskyi International Airport, as well as locations throughout the city. The event will feature some of Ukraine’s most renowned designers, including: Vozianov, Marta Wachholz, Lesia Semi, Oskana Piekna, and Couture de Fleur. LFW will kick-off at the Lvivarnya cultural complex on March 23rd with the presentation of Kateryna Karol’s newest collection, as well as fashion shows by up-and-coming designers. Shows that you won’t want to miss include Italy’s Balossa, Germany’s Rockmädchen, and Dutch designer Carmichael Byfield’s House of Byfield. Additionally, you might want to check out young designers Anastasia Rozova, Svetlana Ehrt, A.KIRA design (BLR), or Yaroshchyk (BLR). Kharkiv’s talented Famenki and Odesa’s brilliant Adamovskaya will also present collections.

In addition to the main shows, Leopolitans and guests of the city will get the wonderful chance to see the exclusive collections of Good Fellow men’s accessories and take part in the presentation by Bob Basset design studio, which is famous for their creative masks. There will once again be fashion-related lectures and discussions, including the ‘Fashion Incapacity: Industry of Limited Possibilities or Territory of Freedom?’ lecture by respected designer Fedir Vozyanov on March 24 at the Halytskyi Airport. Celebrate International Francophonie Day! March 20, beginning at 9.00, place to be confirmed later March 22nd at Lviv’s Mykola Lysenko National Music Academy (5 O. Nyzhankivskogo St.) While the word ‘Francophonie’ may sound like the name of a knock-off Gothic novel monster, it’s actually a term that refers to the diverse regions worldwide where people speak French. Spoken by 274 million people around the world, French is second only to English as the official language of most countries – 33 to be exact. It was French writer Onesime Reclus that first termed the term ‘Francophonie’ in the late 1880s, in reference to the global population of French speakers. An international Francophonie agency was established in 1970 to promote the language. Today, the International Organisation of La Francophonie continues to advocate for the unique linguistic and humanist value of the French language

across the globe. International Francophonie Day is celebrated every March 20th in commemoration of the 1970 Niamey Convention, where French-speaking states signed to align their mutual interest. In 2010, UNESCO established UN French Language Day on the same date in an effort to raise awareness about the value of French to furthering the UN’s work. Today, this important day celebrates the significance of French in helping diverse people come together toward global peace, understanding, and respect between cultures. A staggering half billion Francophones celebrate their common bond every year on March 20th. So whether you’re part of the French-speaking collective or simply aspiring to learn this

Symphonic Pearls of Vienna April 8th at 18:00 at Lviv’s S. Ludkevich Philharmonic Concert Hall (7 Chaykovskogo St.) Lviv has always prided itself as being one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan classical music centres and in recent years this reputation has increasingly attracted more quality performers. A case in point is the Symphonic Pearls of Vienna concert that will take place at Lviv’s S. Ludkevich Philharmonic Concert Hall on April 8th. The musical language of the Viennese classics is characterised by a well-defined form and clarity of harmonic structures and instrumentation. And who but the Vienna Conservatory graduate Georg Kugi, a person who cherishes and practices traditions of the Viennese classical school, can convey the true idea of his

outstanding countrymen, depicting history in music. Works of this period are a central part of every classical musician’s education. Mozart and Haydn’s immortal music is its own universe and, while founded on classicist ideals, is still being explored over 200 years after it was written. Each performance brings a new interpretation. This concert will be a unique event as the INSO-Lviv orchestra will be joined on stage by their younger colleagues – students aged 11-17 from the S. Krushelnytska Music School – to open the first-ever Ukrainian Orchestra Academy initiated by the INSO-Lviv. It will be quite an opportunity for the budding musicians to acquire practical

skills in orchestral playing and enrich their professional experience, as they will get to play under the baton of Viennese conductor Georg Kugi and accompany renowned Ukrainian pianist Andiy Dragan. The concert will feature overtures from three Mozart operas, including Die Zauberflöte and La Clemenza di Tito – some of the most performed operas in the world. Andrei Gavrilov at Lviv’s Opera April 13th at 19:00 at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Lviv’s spectacular Opera & Ballet Theatre will play host to a special musical delight on April 13th – a piano concert by internationally acclaimed pianist Andrei Gavrilov. The brilliant pianist came to the public’s attention back in 1974 when he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and he’s been playing to great acclaim ever since. In 1979 – at the peak of Gavrilov’s career – he was scheduled to record the Rachmaninoff concertos in Berlin, but did not show up. KGB Head Yuri Andropov, under orders from Leonid Brezhnev, had seized his passport and flight ticket due to critical remarks about the Soviet regime.

He was later put under house arrest and committed to psychiatric wards. Militia even showed him an official order that stated that a fatal accident would not be unwelcome. Only through Mikhail Gorbachev’s intervention in 1984 did Gavrilov receive a ‘free passport’ that allowed him to perform again in the West. He later lived in London and Germany. He took a two-year sabbatical from the active cultural scene in 1993, with no concerts or studio recordings. The break turned into eight years and he took the time to study the intentions of composers, ponder religious and philosophical questions, spend half a year in Fiji, and

fundamentally rework his piano technique. He moved to Switzerland in 2001 and resumed playing concerts. He began teaching classes in Madrid and London in 2012 and finished his 3-volume autobiography in 2013. He also released his first new recording in over 20 years – a CD of Chopin Nocturnes, which was completed especially to go along with the book. Свободи, 28) На сцені Львівського театру опери та балету 13 квітня відбудеться концерт всесвітньо відомого піаніста Андрія Гаврилова. Як вундеркінд, він проявив себе ще у 1974 році, коли став наймолодшим переможцем Міжнародного конкурсу ім. П. Чайковського у Москві, і відтоді з великим успіхом виступає на концертних майданчиках світу. Коли у 1979 році – на піку кар'єри Гаврилова – він повинен був поїхати на запис концерту Рахманінова до Берліна, керівник КДБ Ю. Андропов, за наказом Л. Брежнєва не пустив його через критичні зауваження стосовно радянського режиму. Пізніше піаніста помістили

під домашній арешт, а потім – і в психіатричну лікарню. Йому навіть погрожували, що з ним може статись смертельний нещасний випадок. Тільки завдяки особистому втручанню М. Горбачова у 1984 році Гаврилов отримав право на виїзд за межі СРСР, що дозволило йому знову виступати на Заході. Пізніше він жив у Лондоні і Німеччини. У 1993 році А. Гаврилов вирішив зробити перерву на два роки у своїй музичній діяльності, яка затягнулась на вісім років, протягом яких він вивчав творчість різних композиторів, займався релігійними та філософськими питаннями, провів півроку на острові Фіджі

і докорінно переробив свою фортепіанну техніку. Музикант переїхав до Швейцарії у 2001 році і продовжив концертну та педагогічну діяльність, зокрема, класи в Мадриді і Лондоні, а у 2012 році закінчив свою 3-томну автобіографію. A Tribute to Czech Cinematography Each Thursday from March 30 – June 29, Kvartyra 35 Art Café (35 Virmenska St.) Dzyga, Lviv’s centre of culture and art, will delight Leopolitan cinema lovers and guests of the city as they bring Czech Thursdays – a retrospective of the best films of Czech cinema – to the city beginning March 30th. The Czech Republic has produced generations of wonderful screenwriters, directors, and actors. Czech films have not only won many prestigious prizes at international film festivals, but have also won film’s highest honour – the Oscar – several times. The screenings will cover three eras of Czech film. The first presents the Czechoslovak New Wave of the 1960s, where filmgoers will see the likes of Milos Forman, Jan Nemec, Pavel Juracek, and Otakar Vavra. The second part features movies from the 1990s, where fans will see works by Petr Zelenka, Jan Hrebeik, David Ondricek, and Jan Sverak. The third part highlights modern Czech films, where Jiri Krizan, Alice Nellis, Marek Najbrt, and Jan Prusinovsky follow in the footsteps of their illustrious predecessors. Organised by the Dzyga Culture & Art Centre, the Czech Thursdays initiative is dedicated to Czech director, screenwriter, actor, and professor Milos Forman – one of the most important directors of Czechoslovak New Wave. Easter Egg Festival April 1–23 at 1 Muzeina Square Every year, Leopolitans and guests of the city come from near and far to gaze at one of the nation’s cultural wonders. They surely leave in awe of the miracle they have witnessed and wonder – which came first, Easter or the Ukrainian Easter Egg? Organisers of the annual Easter Egg festival have cracked the answer just in time for Easter and welcome everyone to explore the art, symbolism, and joy of creating pysanky – Ukrainian Easter Eggs. From April 1-23 festivalgoers will have the chance to see beautifully-adorned eggs and learn about the centuries-old art form at a variety of workshops. The miracle of pysanky requires a hollowed egg, a metal stylus, wax, varnish, and dye. It also takes a steady hand and Zen-like discipline to tell a scrambled story that dates back more than 2000 years. Then, during the pagan times, the intricately coloured eggs symbolised fertility and seasonal rebirth. By the time Christianity took root in the 10th Century, the symbols changed to represent Christ and the rebirth of man, but the art form remained the same. Today, traditional hand-decorated Ukrainian motifs are an integral part of Easter celebrations in Ukraine. As Orthodox Easter approaches on April 16th, Ukrainians around the country will indulge in decorating eggs together with their families. The pysanky decorating process is relatively simple, although keeping a steady hand can be a challenge. The highlight of this year’s holiday will be the “egg-celent” open-air exhibition of Easter Eggs created by local artists. Фестиваль писанок 1–23 квітня, пл. Музейна, 1 Щороку, львів’яни та гості міста мають нагоду полюбуватись однією з прадавніх традицій українського народу – розписом великодніх писанок. І не лише полюбуватись, а й особисто взяти участь у цьому древньому ритуалі, взявши в одну руку зварене яйце, або дерев’яну чи гіпсову заготовку, а в другу – писачок з гарячим воском і нанести традиційний або власний візерунок. З 1 по 23 квітня гості фестивалю матимуть унікальну нагоду побачити безліч різноманітних писанок, оздоблених всіма барвами й способами, а також дізнатися, як створити це маленьке диво власноруч на численних майстер-класах. Де і коли виник цей звичай – не знає ніхто, але він виявився надзвичайно живучим і пройшов крізь віки. На поверхні яйця, що може символізувати й Землю і Космос, зображаються символи Сонця, Вогню, Води і стихій природи. Коли у Європі, приблизно у 10 столітті укорінилось християнство, цим символам надали релігійних значень, хоча головна ідея й форма залишились незмінними – циклічне відродження природи й людини. Сьогодні найкращі зразки писанок ручної роботи, прикрашені українськими мотивами головна частина святкування Великодня. Великодні свята православні та греко-католики святкуватимуть цього року 16 квітня, й українці по всій країні будуть розписувати крашанки разом зі своїми сім'ями. Процес розпису великоднього яйця доволі простий, хоча й потребує стабільної координації руки й ока. Родзинкою свята цього року стане виставка писанок створених місцевими художниками під відкритим небом. У програмі фестивалю також традиційно багато концертів, веселих конкурсів, розваг для дітей та дорослих і безліч мистецьких заходів для всіх гостей свята. The ballroom at Lviv’s House of Scientists will play host to a very special charity event – the First Galician Ball – on March 21st. The event is set to showcase an entertaining program highlighted with a live performance by Lviv National Opera soloist Oleh Lykhach and an Argentinian tango show and workshop by the masters at Barrio de Palermo dance school. Other activities at the Ball include a children’s fashion show by models from Julia Models, a presentation on car novelties by Club Tesla Ukraine, a creative studio courtesy the Divcha and Miss Princess boutiques, and an exhibition and auction of paintings and photos by notable artists and photographers Yolanta Klusowska and Sergiy Mykhalkiv. The event will raise funds for the purchase of medical equipment for the Harmony children’s rehabilitation centre, which cares for nearly 100 kids with special needs. Bukovel Kids Cup March 24–26 at Bukovel Ski Resort (Ivano-Frankivsk Region) Bukovel – Ukraine’s largest and most popular ski resort – will host the biggest and best-attended junior alpine ski competition in Ukraine, the Bukovel Kids Cup, from March 24–26. Bukovel has supported the Kids Cup for the last few years, actively contributing to alpine ski development in Ukraine. These competitions are vital for the future of the sport as they provide opportunities for juniors to start their careers early on and prove themselves on the competitive stage at a young age. All kids are welcome – from sport schools and colleges to NGO members and amateurs – you just need to be between 5-18 years old to participate. Kids will be divided into six age groups. ‘March Cats’ Erotic Art Festival March 24-26 in Uzhhorod Since the ‘March Cats’ festival first launched in 2006, it has become tremendously popular among Ukrainians and participants and guests from Poland, Lithuania, and Belarus. The ‘March Cats’ Erotic Art Festival is an experience quite unlike any other festival or gallery you have likely ever attended. Over the course of three days, a curated selection of some of the finest erotic art modern artists have to offer will be on display in the city’s galleries, awaiting your perusal and enjoyment. Visitors are invited to view the art and other daily entertainments – from poetry readings to pantomime and acrobatic displays. The festival is divided into three main themes: Visual – creative modern art and photograph exhibitions; Educative – roundtables, discussions, and flash mobs tackling issues of modern culture and art; and Literary – presentations, readings, and slams. The events will engage, titillate, and challenge you. Not every piece is to everyone’s tastes, but there is something there that will speak to you – and what doesn’t can lead to some fascinating conversations. This year’s headliner is Ukrainian poet, writer, and literary critic Oksana Zabuzhko. She gained popularity from her prose works explicitly addressing the themes of sexuality and women’s issues in Ukrainian society – often from a feminist point of view. “ Березневі коти” 24–26 березня в Ужгороді Арт-фестиваль “Березневі коти” вперше відбувся в Ужгороді 2006 року і відразу ж став надзвичайно популярним серед українців і гостей з Польщі, Литви та Білорусі. Ярослав Бринь Самобутній живописець, блискучий монументаліст, добрий чарівник Львівського оперного театру, яскравий феномен сучасного культурно-мистецького життя Львова – це далеко не все, що можна сказати про художника – постановника львівського оперного театру Ярослава Бриня.

вою художню освіту Ярослав Бринь розпочав у стінах Львівського коледжу імені Івана Труша, після чого успішно продовжив навчання у Львівській академії мистецтв на факультеті монументального живопису. Молодому живописцю випала чудова можливість втілити здобуті навички – Ярослав розробляв розписи вітражів у іспанській компанії. З 2004 року він працює художником Львівського національного академічного театру опери та балету імені Соломії Крушельницької. Дебютував як художник-постановник, втіливши у життя декорації до балету “Білосніжка і сім гномів”. Також митець брав участь у створенні відомих опер і балетів з репертуару Львівського оперного театру. Створив проект і виготовив декорації до балету “Лебедине озеро” (Китай) – з властивим йому відчуттям емоційних потреб театральної публіки.

Окрім театральних постановок, Ярослав Бринь має значний доробок живопису, зокрема портретного. Також він один з небагатьох художників, який створює монументальні полотна у жанрі баталістики: “Бій під Хотином” (3м × 1,5м) та “Козаки на Турецьких берегах” (2,5м × 1,5м). Працював і над монументальними розписами церков та приватних будівель. Проте його реалізм має певну особливість – дихання лірично-фантастичного духу. Однак, як зазначає сам митець, власне освіта та робота в театрі сформували комплексне бачення живопису, синтезуючи сценографію з космічною енергією – вбачати буття у кожному предметі. Саме співпраця з видатними народними художниками України, братами Тадеєм і Михайлом Риндзаками мала значний вплив на становлення митця. Зазвичай комунікабельний і відкритий до світу, Ярослав відчув потребу передати здобуті знання. 2015 року відкрив художню студію “Театр пензля”, де не тільки навчає академічному живопису та рисунку, а й проводить тематичні майстер-класи і культурні проекти. Ярослав Бринь дивує сучасників і естетичними якостями своїх творів. Значний доробок його робіт перебуває у приватних колекціях і галереях, як в Україні, так і за кордоном – США, Китай, Південна Америка та Європа. Роботи художника вирізняються темпераментним письмом, в якому синтезувались суб’єктивно чуттєва настанова до світу та структурно-осмислений реалізм з пропорційними домішками футуризму і елементами арт-деко. aroslav Bryn began his art education at Lviv’s Ivan Trush Art College before studying in the Department of Monumental Painting at Lviv’s Art Academy. The talented young artist then took the opportunity to work on stained glass panel layouts at a Spanish company before moving to Lviv’s S. Krushelnitska Opera & Ballet Theatre in 2004 as the artistic director for scenery design of the ‘Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs’ ballet. He continued to work on stage sets for a number of operas and ballets and gained acclaim for his spectacular stage for the ‘Swan Lake’ ballet (China). In addition to theatre plays, Bryn has a tremendous art heritage – especially in portrait genre. He is one of Ukraine’s few artists to have created monumental battle paintings, including Battle Near Khotyn (3m × 1.5m) and Cossacks at Turkish Shores (2.5m × 1.5m). His works can be found on monumental mural paintings in churches and private residences across Ukraine. He imbues the lyrical-fantastical breath of spirituality into his realistic views. The artist attributes his education and work experience in theatre to his complex view of the painting process. He strives to synthesize scenography with cosmic energy and to see essence in every object. He attributes his cooperation with Ukrainian merited artists Mykhavlo Ryndzak and Tadey Ryndzak for his success. Being open to the world, Bryn felt the need to share his artistic knowledge with others and opened the Theatre of Brush (Teatr Penzliy) art studio in 2015. There he teaches not only academic art and paintings, but also conducts themed workshops and hosts cultural projects. Bryn impresses his contemporaries with the aesthetic qualities of his own works of art. You can find his pieces in private collections and galleries across Ukraine, as well as abroad in the USA, Europe, China, and South America. They are easily recognisable due to his emotional style where his structural-logical realism and subjective emotional approach to the world are touched with nuances of futurism and art-deco elements. It’s not every day you can see true monumental works of art, a form that continues to remain relevant after several epochs of art.

Good or Not – Bitter Harvest is a Must–See Movie

et’s get this out of the way right now – if you are a foreigner that lives or spends any amount of time in Ukraine, you have to see Bitter Harvest. The Canadian-made movie about the Soviet-manufactured famine in Ukraine in the 1930s has polarised the critics, but that shouldn’t stop you from this cinematic treatment of a subject integral to Ukrainian-Russian relationship that is not widely known in the Western world. The film tells the story of two star-crossed lovers struggling to survive the Holodomor, a genocidal famine in Ukraine caused by Joseph Stalin’s collectivisation policies. The film labours to be as meaningful as other cinematic treatments of horrific wartime atrocities, such as Schindler’s List’s take on the Holocaust or The Pianist’s portrayal of the Warsaw Uprising. Bitter Harvest doesn’t quite live up to it’s subject matter though, reminding viewers more of Passendaele – another Canadian wartime movie about a famed World War I battle. Both movies have $20 million budgets and plots that, despite the important subject matter, fail to sufficiently impact viewers. Despite this – or perhaps because of it – the films are required viewing. Good or not – Bitter Harvest is a must-see movie.

Love in a tumultuous time The film follows the story of young Yuri (Max Irons) and Natalka (Samantha Barks), lovers since childhood, who are separated shortly after marriage. Yuri is an artistic soul from a family of revolutionaries, including Barry Pepper and Terence Stamp as Yaroslav and Ivan. The brutal effects of Joseph Stalin’s (Gary Oliver) collectivisation

policy are brought to bear by a brutal Russian commissar (Tamer Hassan). Yuri and Natalka are forced to extreme lengths to stay alive and, predictably, manage to get by even as those around them are lying dead of starvation in the streets or shot dead by the Russians in the fields around them. While the plot pretends to be a love story, one never quite gets past the feeling that it is simply a ploy to present the politics of its producers.

The diaspora’s view of the Holodomor The topic is as important now as it is timely. Believed to be the second worst genocide of the 20th Century, the Holodomor is just not that well known in the West. This is what drove the Ukrainian-Canadian team behind the film. Coscreenwriter Richard Bachynsky Hoover, director George Mendeluk, and investor Ian Ihnatowycz – who funded the $21 million film in its entirety – all have connections to Ukraine. Mendeluk, in fact, even has family that survived the Holodomor. From scenes highlighting the ancient Ukrainian holiday of Ivana Kupala Day, to traditional wedding and funeral ceremonies, to old-fashioned harvesting songs, the film has a distinctly Ukrainian diaspora understanding of events. “I wanted to immortalise, resurrect, and preserve for posterity the ritual and culture for Ukrainian generations to come and for the world to see”, Mendeluk told The Ukrainian Weekly. There is even a scene where Natalka’s mother shows her a flyer offering free land in Canada – a policy that happened a generation earlier. The portrayal of Russian commissars is also decidedly

one-dimensional; in fact, the one time a Soviet officer is presented in a positive light, the screenwriters make sure you know that he is from Kazakhstan, not Russia.

A timely release Despite the quibbles, the film is still a solid effort and decidedly worth the time investment. It is clear that the actors and crew have invested a lot of themselves in the movie. The film was shot just outside of Kyiv at the time of the Revolution of Dignity, and several of the crew would spend their free time on the square. Their portrayal of the Holodomor, which many Ukrainians believe was a determined effort by Stalin to neuter any sort of Ukrainian independence movement, has obvious parallels with that revolution. While the love story to frame the events may be seen as cliché, the victory is bringing a movie of this scope to a Western audience. And it looks to be the first of a few. Polish director Agnieszka Holland, twice nominated for the Oscars, is set to bring the Holodomor-era story of Gareth Jones to the big screen soon. Jones was the Western journalist that first reported the famine. While Jones makes an appearance in Bitter Harvest, Holland’s feature is set to show how he stood in opposition to New York Times reporter Walter Duranty, who peddled the Soviet propaganda of the time. Now there is a story with parallels to today. Regardless, Bitter Harvest is a film that will introduce the uninitiated to one of Ukraine’s most important stories, and it does an adequate job of doing just that. Lee Reaney

LVIV SOCIETY Women’s March for Equal Rights Over 100 people marched through Lviv on International Women’s Day calling for women to rise up, fight domestic violence, and demand equality. The March 8th holiday was celebrated in the Soviet Union is still widely marked in Ukraine, but activists say a recent emphasis on giving women flowers and compliments is not what women really want. The action was tied to the International Day of Protection of Women and part of the International Women’s Strike that took place in more than 40 countries. Participants said that they stand for equal pay between women and men and noted that many men had joined the march. ”We want to remind the public that in Ukraine women are paid 1/3 less than men, even though it is mostly women that combine work for the benefit of society with domestic work”, said the organisers. ”We require 100% occupations for women, 100% pay, 100% of the career opportunities.” One of the main demands of the march was for the Ukrainian government to ratify the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing & Combatting Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence. The convention, which has been signed by 44 countries and came into force in 2014, aims to prevent violence, to protect victims, and ”to end the impunity of the perpetrators”. Свято 8 Березня широко відзначалось в СРСР і досі не менш жваво відзначається в незалежній Україні, але активістки кажуть, що квіти й компліменти – це не те і не все, чого жінки дійсно прагнуть. Ця акція стала частиною міжнародного жіночого страйку, який був проведений у понад 40 країнах світу. Учасниці маршу відзначили, що вони виступають за рівну оплату праці жінок і чоловіків. "Ми хочемо нагадати громадськості, що в Україні жінки отримують за роботу на третину менше, ніж чоловіки, проте, це ж в основному жінки поєднують роботу

на благо суспільства з домашньою роботою. Ми вимагаємо 100% професій для жінок, 100% заробітної плати, 100% можливостей для кар'єрного зростання, заявили представниці "Феміністського майстер-класу", організатори маршу. Однією з головних вимог маршу стала ратифікація українським урядом Конвенції Ради Європи про запобігання та боротьбу з насильством щодо жінок та побутового насильства, яка була відкрита для підписання 11 травня 2011 року в Стамбулі, і набрала чинності 1 серпня 2014 р. Метою конвенції є запобігання насильству, захист жертв торгівлі людьми і "покладення краю безкарності винних". Станом на травень 2016 року вона була підписана 44 країнами.

‘Professionals’ Exhibition The open-air ‘Professionals’ exhibition featuring women that have made great contributions to various areas of life – from art to physics – was put on display in Lviv’s city centre from March 8th to mark International Women’s Day. The exhibition aims to dispel the stereotypes about women, such as that science is primarily a “man’s world”, that women should stay home, that women shouldn’t work in ‘dirty’ jobs like mining or construction, and that women should make less money than men. The exhibition seeks to inspire Leopolitan ladies by seeing positive examples of women with successful careers. The exhibition’s slogan of “Invisible. Significant” was chosen to attract attention to unseen women professionals, who make life easier and the world a better place.

Виставка "Професіоналки" Виставка під відкритим небом "Професіоналки", що відкрилась на площі перед Ратушею 8 березня була присвячена Міжнародному дню жінок та розповідала про жінок, які зробили великий внесок в різні сфери життя – від мистецтва до фізики. Основною метою виставки є руйнування стереотипів, що наука – це в основному "чоловічий світ". Серед безлічі гендерних стереотипів про жінок, цей, безумовно, найбільш обговорюваний феміністками сьогодні. Застарілі уявлення про жінок, що жінки повинні займатись "чистою роботою”, заробляти менше, ніж чоловіки і т.д ще нерідко заважають прогресу людства. Основна ідея виставки – стати джерелом натхнення і позитивним прикладом жінок з успішною кар'єрою для львів’янок. Девіз виставки – "Невидимі. Значимі" був обраний, щоб привернути увагу до невидимих жінок-професіоналок, які роблять життя простішим, а світ кращим.

Lviv to Welcome New Airlines On March 10th representatives of Lviv’s Danylo Halytskyi International Airport, the Lviv Tourism Alliance, and Lviv City Council announced the creation of a special foundation that hopes to attract new airlines and flight destinations to Lviv. The foundation will raise money to be used to attract the airlines and increase budget air travel options to and from Lviv – an important stimulus to Lviv’s hotel and restaurant industries. “Generally, the financial stimulation of air carriers is a common practice around the world, while in Ukraine it will be implemented for the first time”, said Andriy Sydor of the Lviv Tourism Alliance. “The biggest European low-cost airline, Ryanair, and four more airline carriers are expected to launch flights to Lviv International Airport starting in 2017”, said airport CEO Tetyana Romanovska. “Ryanair will be a new entrant. This time, the Irish low-cost airline does not request a 100% service discount. They promise to pay us. So far, we don’t know the exact amount, as talks are ongoing.” She believes that the first Ryanair flights could connect Lviv with Polish airports, as the agreement to liberalise the air transportation market is already in force between the two countries.

The World of Kabuki The Year of Japan in Ukraine kicked off in Lviv on March 3rd with The World of Kabuki, an elegant and exquisite exhibition of art at the Sheptytsky National Museum. The Embassy of Japan in Ukraine presented a unique part of the heritage of world art – authentic Japanese prints of Kabuki theatre. In his welcoming speech, Japanese Ambassador Shigeki Sumi said that traditional Japanese Kabuki theatre has long been highly regarded around the world. He said he is always very happy to introduce the splendour of Japanese painting art to as many people as possible. Kabuki actors were superstars in the 18th and 19th centuries in Japan. Passionate fans admired them and had an insatiable appetite for their images. This fed a publishing industry that massproduced colourful woodblock prints of actors on stage that could be purchased as inexpensive souvenirs or as a substitute for a theatre experience. The World of Kabuki exhibition presents a selection of these dramatic prints that connected fans to their idols. Examples of the prints include off- or backstage portrayals that satisfied fans’ voyeuristic curiosity about their favourite actors’ lives, fantasy scenes of actors in unlikely groups, and even death portrayals of especially famous actors. The exhibition will be on display until March 24th at the A. Sheptytsky National Museum (20 Svobody Ave.).

Чарівний світ театру Кабукі У Львові Рік Японії в Україні розпочався 3 березня з художньої виставки "Чарівний світ театру Кабукі" в Національному музеї ім. А. Шептицького. Посольство Японії в Україні представило унікальну частку світової художньої спадщини – справжні японські гравюри, присвячені традиційному театру Кабукі. У своєму вітальному слові Надзвичайний і Повноважний посол Японії в Україні Шігекі Сумі сказав, що традиційний японський театр Кабукі є високо оціненим у всьому світі. Він також сказав, що йому дуже приємно представити красу японського образотворчого мистецтва якомога більшій кількості людей. Актори театру Кабукі були суперзірками у 18-19 століттях в Японії. Пізніше

фото знаменитих кіноакторів, барвисті гравюри акторів Кабукі на сцені були надзвичайно масово поширені серед їх прихильників та обожнювачів. Ці зображення були недорогими й продавались повсюди. На цій виставці представлений багато кольорових ксилогравюр з зображеннями сцен із вистав, а також закулісного життя японських знаменитостей, адже публіка дуже цікавилась подробицями життя своїх улюблених акторів. The Servant of Two Masters Premiers in Lviv Lviv’s Mariya Zankovetska Drama Theatre brought Carlo Goldoni’s ‘The Servant of Two Masters’, a popular comedy that has been adapted over and over again for the last 270 years, to the Western Ukrainian capital last month. In the wrong hands, ‘The Servant of Two Masters’ could be a complete disaster. But due to the efforts of Kyivian artist Violetta Makar, who created the sumptuous costumes, the play is an absolute triumph. The heart of this adaptation is in its acting and staging. The entire cast displays fresh and vibrant comedic talents. It takes a lot of effort to craft a comedy that feels this effortless. Revkevych’s version gives an antique theatrical style just enough of an update to make it feel lively and timeless. BOOMTOWN Lviv real estate boom: the elegant capital city of West Ukraine is experiencing a construction spike as the local economy surges ahead on the back of growing international investor interest together with easy access to EU markets and strong regional tourism and IT sector expansion Despite being only Ukraine’s seventh largest city (with an estimated population of 728,000 in 2016), a valid case could be made for Lviv as the country’s second most important city after Kyiv. When it comes to real estate in Lviv, prices in many segments such as new homes and yearround rentals are second only to Kyiv. To some observers this phenomenon can be a bit head scratching. “Where is the money and demand coming from?” they may ask themselves. If we want understand any real estate market, then it helps to look at the interplay of various macroeconomic factors and cultural influences for that market.

Quantity and quality of new Lviv housing My cousin in western Ukraine likes to tell me, “They’re building in Lviv like never before.” A quick look at the data from the State Statistics Administration for Lviv supports his statement. Total commissioned residential real estate in Lviv in square meters for the first 9 months of 2016, 2015, and 2014 was at least double the amount of newly commissioned living space for the corresponding period during the boom year of 2008. While this data include figures for single-family homes as well as apartment complexes, and some renovations are included, the strong upward trend is quite clear. What about the quality of this new housing in Lviv? In 2017, there are lots of offerings for the “economy” segment. Inevitably, some developers are cutting corners to serve price-sensitive buyers. Indeed, if you take a quick look online you’ll see non-renovated “core and shell” units in new complexes in Lviv that are being offered for as low as UAH 11,000 per square meter (about USD 400). In recent months, I have heard anecdotal accounts of buyers forced to replace the windows of their new apartments due to lack of quality. However, there are also new market players who are changing the quality and variety of properties offered on

the Lviv market. At present, TPF Ukraine is the only major residential real estate developer in Lviv owned and operated by Western investors. Their first project was Belgian Village, a complex of 9 “comfort class” buildings with 312 apartments on manicured grounds with a prime location about 300 meters from the new Forum Lviv shopping center and about a kilometer from the city’s downtown Opera House. The units are sold as turn-key properties with full renovations, something that is relatively rare in Ukraine. Seven of the nine buildings have already been commissioned and more than 95% of units have been sold. Current prices for remaining units range from UAH 25,000 up to UAH 32,000 per square meter (about USD 920-USD 1,175) depending on unit size, building and floor. TPF recently began sales on its newest project, a townhouse development in the suburban village of Pustomyty with 110 two-level buildings. Once again, they come fully equipped. The developer has two additional land plots for future real estate projects.

Real estate boom attracts diverse participation Lviv’s real estate boom is attracting all manner of players to the market. The Lviv IT Cluster is a non-profit that brings together IT companies, universities, and local authorities for the development of the IT industry. It is one of many groups to become engaged in real estate development. This organization is a unique participant in Lviv’s real estate market. As a non-profit, it cannot and does not seek to make a big profit on its projects. Instead, it must reinvest proceeds back into the fund. However, it enjoys a special status by virtue of its close relationship with many of the key players in Lviv’s most dynamic and profitable business sector, along with strong support from local government. The group’s first real estate project, “IT House”, is a 72-unit building located on land granted by the city. The project’s

goal is to provide high quality and affordable housing to employees of Lviv’s IT industry. Non-renovated “core and shell” units are currently on sale at USD 555 per square meter, with commissioning planned for the first half of 2017. IT House is a pilot project for the Cluster and interested buyers can register for future IT House projects online – this helps the Cluster estimate interest in new developments, such as the next project, IT Village, with 20 premium cottages. Each project holds a separate tender for designers, architects, and building companies. With its focus on quality design and affordability, the IT Cluster is hoping to “disrupt” Lviv’s housing market to spur other developers to improve the overall quality of their offerings. Lviv’s IT Cluster has even received requests for IT Houses from other regional cities such as Ivano-Frankivsk.

Lviv tourism trade If the 2012 UEFA European Championship was a catalyst for Lviv’s tourism industry, leading to the opening of several new hotels, restaurants, and a modern airport, then the devaluation of the hryvnia in recent years has been a windfall for Lviv’s tourist trade. The drop in value of the national currency has led to a surge in domestic tourists. Nearly five years after Euro 2012, new restaurants, cafes, and shops continue to sprout up like mushrooms after a rainstorm. As a result, commercial rents in Lviv’s historic core/Market Square area can be quite high and are highly sensitive to the volume of foot traffic they can command. Yet despite opening a sparkling new airport almost five years ago, Europe’s major budget carriers have yet to begin flights to Lviv. For the present, Lviv’s vacation rentals market largely still caters to local tourists, often with lower budgets. As a result, the renovation level and service quality of Lviv vacation rentals have not been raised to meet the needs of tourists from EU countries, who have yet to arrive en masse. Lviv’s daily

Lviv promotion rentals market will rapidly develop in the future when budget flights to Lviv begin from EU destinations. In anticipation of future demand, Lviv’s hotel sector is looking to add significant quantities of new hotel rooms over the next three to four years. Numerous international chains are on record as looking to open Lviv hotels. According to hotel expert Ivan Loun, plans exist to add about 1,000 new hotel rooms in the 3- and 4-star hotel categories in Lviv. However, he sees many of these projects as 50/50 propositions under their current ownership structures. Indeed, while some of these owners are interested in attracting international operators, several may lack the resources or experience to meet the demands of operating under an international brand. Many of these projects are still in their early stages of development and it is likely that several owners may look to attract equity investors or to sell their entire stakes. Lviv even has plans to attract business tourists for conferences by opening a 2,000-3,000 person convention center. To work on this project, the city has formed a Convention Bureau. It possible this project could be completed under a Public Private Partnership or similar structure, but so far, it is still in the early planning stages.

Lviv IT industry as key growth driver According to recent reports, Ukraine’s IT industry employed about 100,000 people in 2016 – around 12% higher than the previous year. The size of Lviv’s IT industry is rapidly approaching that of the country’s number two regional IT market in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city with a 1.4 million population, making it rough twice the size of Lviv. This growing army of Lviv IT employees are all potential real estate consumers. There was a time when IT outsourcing to Ukraine was all about lower costs via labor arbitrage. While IT salaries in Ukraine are still lower than in the West, they are rising rapidly, especially when one takes into account actual “take-home pay”. Many Ukrainian IT workers are comfortably middle class, while local owners and directors of these companies can be affluent. Some estimate the total number of IT workers in Lviv to be as high as 20,000 or even 30,000 people. That is a lot of potential homebuyers and real estate investors for a regional market like Lviv. Some IT companies in Lviv are growing so fast that they can even be difficult tenants for commercial landlords, because these companies quickly outgrow their offices and move out for larger spaces. Landlords renting to IT companies should plan ahead and include several months of advance notification for early termination of leases. To keep up with demand for office space and to provide a foundation for the sustainable long-term growth of Lviv’s IT industry, the Lviv IT Cluster is spearheading an ambitious project dubbed “The Innovation District IT Park”. This project envisions commercial space for 10,000 IT workers,

an “IT university” with innovation labs featuring participation from Lviv’s universities, which are important sources of human capital. There will also be a kindergarten, restaurants, and a 100-room hotel, all located on a prime location near Striyskiy Park and the city’s Tax Authority building. The IT Park will be investor-funded, and about 30% of available space has received commitments (Letters of Intent from IT companies that wish to have their own standalone buildings). Pending financing, construction of the IT Park could begin in late 2017. Assuming a 15-month construction period, stage 1 could be complete as early as late 2018/early 2019. In the meantime, fast-growing IT companies in Lviv will continue to need office space, and not all of them can wait for the opening of the IT Park.

Manufacturing and service sectors Boasting a large population of well-educated students and recent graduates, together with lower salaries compared to neighboring Poland and Slovakia, Lviv should be fertile ground for Business Process Outsourcing (“BPO”). However, when compared with Lviv’s IT industry, the development of BPO in Lviv has been a mild disappointment. A beachhead has been established by Nestle with its Shared Services Center. This has been followed recently by Vimpelcom, with a few small call centers. But Lviv is a long way away from the progress of nearby Krakow, which has at least 20-25 large Shared Services Centers. If you are a young person in Lviv with foreign language skills and not interested in working in the local IT industry, then you have relatively few attractive options available. Generally, entry-level jobs in the hospitality industry tend to be lower-wage and offer less room for professional development when compared with relocating to Kyiv to work at a multinational country office, for example. Wages in the BPO sector are not as high as those in IT, but are much better than most other currently available options in Lviv. BPO may not be as “sexy” as IT outsourcing, but with further development, it could become an important tool for Lviv to retain recent graduates, attract foreign investment, and stimulate demand for large commercial office spaces. Light manufacturing is often cited as another sector that could potentially flourish in Lviv and Lviv Oblast. It is not hard to see why – manufacturing wages in Lviv are currently lower than some coastal cities in China. With proximity to the EU 1-2 days by road, versus a month or more for container from China, logistics are especially favorable for things like apparel and footwear manufacturers. Today there are already a number of existing manufacturing projects in Lviv and Lviv Oblast, and in mid-2015, a subsidiary of major Dutch company CTP was selected to build Ryasne-2 industrial park that could house 20-30 companies and produce up to 3,000 jobs. However, today there is a growing shortage of land plots for factories within Lviv’s city limits. Many potential investors in new manufacturing

projects (especially larger ones) will need to look to Lviv’s suburbs or move further out into other parts of Lviv Oblast. Lviv’s proximity to the EU can also present challenges when it comes to finding employees for unskilled and low-skilled work. Neighboring Poland’s economy has cooled off in recent years, but remains attractive for Ukrainians, offering much higher wages. In recent years, Poland has issued several hundred thousand residency permits to Ukrainians, and about three-quarters of migrant workers in Poland are from western Ukraine, including Lviv. Over 70% of Ukrainian temporary workers, who participated in a recent survey by Polish staffing company OTTO, indicated that they are considering remaining in Poland permanently. This will act as a drain on human resources in Lviv itself, which will have a knock-on effect for the real estate market.

The future of Lviv real estate So what is the future of Lviv real estate? Where will future economic growth and demand come from? Where should investors be looking? Expect today’s prosperity in Lviv’s Old Town to continue to spread outward from the Market Square area. (Even if Schengen visa policy is liberalized, the hryvnia would have to strengthen substantially before domestic tourism to Lviv could be threatened.) Once major budget airlines open flights to Lviv, yields on vacation rental apartments downtown should increase, as should occupancy rates in hotels. Growth in IT services shows no sign of cooling off. This will continue to drive demand for office space, but demand could be much higher if Lviv succeeds in attracting more companies to open Shared Services Centers for business process outsourcing. Real estate in Lviv, like elsewhere in Ukraine, is the preferred asset class for savings, and this phenomenon provides a “floor” for prices. But if Lviv wants to raise the “ceiling” on real estate, then it must meet the challenges of building a broadly diversified economy that is more than just IT and tourism, by wooing investors, stemming the outflow of labor, and attracting talented workers from other parts of Ukraine. Traditionally in March issue we are going to talk with our Ladies leaders on the role of woman in business and the prospective of industries which they represent. How do you see the prospective of your industry?

What is the role of woman in business?

There are many changes in healthcare recently and which ones are the best – the question is very doubtful. There is no single direction of medicine development, and it is once again postpones the expected results and possible improvements. Therefore, healthcare managers have to make their way in an uncertain environment, relying more on the development of each individual company, not the industry as a whole.

The role of woman in business as much as in life is huge, but not easy. Woman inspires, woman gives vitality and woman as professional manager can effectively use her internal and external resources in business and as a result, make changes in society for the better.

For several seasons Ukrainian embroidery is on the crest of fashion! It has inspired national and international designers who innovationally interpret our ancient traditions. In the area of sales and service embroidery equipment on can observe such trends as production optimization, productivity increasing and active SMM.

The role of women in business is the same as the role of men. Increasingly necessary to have critical thinking, emotional intelligence, stress. These features should not have gender.

Insurance has taken a clear course for the digital transition. Insurance companies are becoming increasingly open to customers – both individuals and big business. It creates special mobile applications, tunable IT systems, launched online shopping for insurance. Leading market players are trying to simplify their internal processes most at the stage of selling services and in the process of settling insurance claims. Today they also started to work on the implementation of the electronic policy at the state level that will make the insurance market more secure and transparent. Leaders of the market launched a pilot project for direct loss adjustment system that makes it easier to obtain insurance payment. Soon to protect yourself or get an insurance payment the person will need only a smartphone to connect to the Internet. Some insurance companies already partially introduced digital technology. For a complete retooling, a little time and legislative changes are needed.

Big business has no longer take into account gender and does not assess the effectiveness of management from this perspective. The modern world offers many opportunities for anyone who can think and act outside the box, who is persistent and willing to evolve. And increasingly in some segments of business women are more successful than men.

Our company operates in the field of machinery for food and beverage sector. In 2017 we will face the following trends in the world of food and beverage, such as: growth of fresh-freezed food demand, transparency in labeling, environmentally sustainable packaging materials, packaging formats for pet products. Since our life style is getting faster and faster more machinery to be able to fill and seal pre made pouches will be needed. We will see another trend – drinkable breakfasts that act as meal.

I see a world trend of increasing a woman number in the top management and boards of private entities and governments. It is very positive and it means to me that we are proceding to a better social balance and better level of communication between men and women. EBA Meeting with justice Forewarned means forearmed. On February 21, 2017, under the initiative of the Main Territorial Department of Justice in the Lviv region the Association members discussed possible defenses actions against raiding. Among other things, the participants got the insights from the experience of the lawyer who defended the interests of the company, faced with a raider attack twice. The expert stressed the need to be careful with the preparation and signing of the founding documents, the selection of a notary and civil registrar.

Oksana Kumanska-Nor, Deputy Chief of Territorial Administration of Justice in Lviv region told about the new service from justice – SMS informing. This service will allow the owner of the estate or corporate rights to be informed promptly of any registrations that are committed with their property. It will greatly increase the chances of owners to protect property from raider attacks. In order to connect the above function one need to register at the website of the Ministry of Justice. Mr. Zamlynsky, the Deputy Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration once again confirmed that the Lviv Regional State Administration is ready to protect business within the law and within its competences. The key to such relations is transparency and integrity of the business. Participants had the opportunity to discuss combating raiding and innovations in the legal framework of rights in the cozy atmosphere of the Garmata Restaurant. EBA Women's Club March is the beginning of spring, when everything starts to blossom and come to life after winter snow domination. Member of EBA Women's Club also decided to start a season meetings in March. In a cozy Vintage Boutique Hotel café-restaurant ladies discussed life hacks of bringing up a happy child. Women's Club participants invited Natalia Koliadko, the certified organizational coach, Manager of 100% Coaching Centre in the Western Region who kindly supported the debate, drawing attention to some important aspects of the relationship between parents and children, using the theory of generations and coaching, well-known, but not widely used in family life. As a result of discussion and information received, the following conclusion was pronounced. Unfortunately, there is no universal recipe. Every child is a small microcosm, preservation and development of which requires an individual approach. Happiness of the child directly proportional to the happiness of the parents. We, as adults, should remember that children are our mirror, so by improving ourselves, we invest into our children's future happiness.

EBA Events EBA Labour market Investment index EBA Western Ukrainian Office together with Lviv Consulting Group keep monitoring the labor market of Western Ukraine and are happy to share with you results of the 12th Wave, Western Ukraine Labour Index, conducted in February 2017.

Labour market Index in February 2017 went down by 0.20 since 2016 and was at the level of 2,78 (5 – labour market is definitely favorable for employers, 1 – labour market is definitely unfavorabe). The labor market remained unstable or neutral for employers. The survey participants believe the pool of qualified candidates in the market is shrinking, the competition for talents increases and market salaries are going up as well. Key facts that describe labour market: 1. We observe an increase in number of companies competing for people with employers from abroad. 2. There is a pronounced and stable trend to increase personnel. 74% of participants have plans to increase head count. 3. Workers (skilled labour), core business specialists and non-skilled labour are currently on demand at the market 4. Increase of the official minimal salary level to 3200 uah has impacted only 17% of respondents: Metal working, Textile, Training and Consulting service providers. They had to establish higher salaries for certain groups of employees starting on January 1, 2017. Most of the companies paid their employees more than 3200 before that’s why this reform didn’t influenced on them. 5. Flexible working hours, subsidized meals and sport/recreation facilities become more popular benefits not only with service providers, but also among production companies. As I understand, to begin the construction we have to obtain some permits and to undertake some other actions. Could you please briefly describe this procedure? Adam.

Dear Adam, first of all, your company has to possess the proprietary rights for corresponding land plot where you are planning to conduct the construction. It may be ownership title as well as other right to use the land plot for construction (i.e. superficies, long term rent). The corresponding land plot has to be designed for construction. Please take into consideration that according to art. 82 of the Land Code of Ukraine, the foreign legal entity as your limited liability company established in Poland, may acquire the ownership title exclusively to the non-agricultural land plot and solely under the following conditions: • within settlement in case of purchase of immovable property or for construction of immovable property related to business activity in Ukraine; • outside settlement in case of purchasing immovable property. Based on the proprietary rights for corresponding land plot, according to the Law of Ukraine “On regulation of urban development”, your company has to submit to the corresponding local authority the statement on the intention to construct on the land plot. Afterwards the company will obtain the outgoing data for construction: city-planning conditions and restrictions; technical specifications; assignment on design. This is the first step to begin the construction. According to the outgoing data the architect may begin to develop the project documentation for the future factory. Please take into consideration that your future factory will apparently belong to 4th or 5th category of construction complexity (according to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 27 April 2011 No. 557). Therefore the project documentation has to meet all the special criteria defined for the buildings of 4th or 5th category of complexity. To begin the preparatory works on the corresponding land plot your company has to submit the notification on the beginning of preparatory works or construction to the appropriate territorial division of the state architectural control (architectural control authority). Afterwards the company has to submit the declaration on beginning of preparatory or construction works which shall be registered by the architectural control authority. Next step is to submit the application on obtaining of permit for construction to the architectural control authority. Construction of the building of 4th or 5th category of complexity is possible only after such permit is obtained.

Handball Super League: Halychanka Hammer Dnipryanka Lviv’s Halychanka women’s handball team roared back after the winter break to score two wins in their first Super League action of 2017. Coaches Tetyana Shtefan and Anzhela Savchenko had to rethink their strategy as the team dealt with four injured players that are still on the mend. The hometown ladies got by Dnipryanka 29:23 in the first affair before settling in for a comfortable 16:11 victory in the second. The two wins helped our Halychanka gain 8 points and increase their hold on second place. The next Super League home action take place on March 24-25 when Halychanka take on Ternopil’s Ekonomuniver.

Lviv’s February Athlete of the Month – Tatiana Klimchenko Up-and-coming Leopolitan cyclist Tatiana Klimchenko was awarded Lviv’s Athlete of the Month Award in February for her performance at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships. The 22-year-old beat all comers to take home gold in the 10km scratch event in Los Angeles. Her result ensured that she finished 2nd overall in the 201617 World Cup cycling season – an incredible accomplishment! The Lviv I. Boberskyi State University of Physical Culture grad had previously captured silver in the Junior Omnium event at the 2012 European Championships. She hopes to turn her success into a berth in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Lviv Today wishes her continued success.

Archery: Young Lviv Archer is European Champion Lviv’s young Archery phenom Veronika Marchenko crushed her Russian opponent 6:0 to capture gold in the Individual Recurve at the European Indoor Championships in Vittel, France. The 23-year-old Olympian cruised through the tournament defeating France’s Tiffany Bankert 6:0 in the 1/8 final, Poland’s Violeta Mischor 6:2 in the quarterfinal, and France’s Angelina Koende 6:2 in her semifinal. She also helped the Ukrainian women’s recurve team get by Russia on their way to a bronze medal. Marchenko has been on the radar since winning gold in the team event at the 2014 World Indoor Championships. She has since won gold in both the individual and team recurve events at the 2016 European Championships and bronze in the team event at the 2015 European Games. Congratulations to Ms. Marchenko on a wonderful achievement!

Стрільба з лука: Львів’янка Вероніка Марченко – Чемпіон Європи Молода львівська лучниця Вероніка Марченко здобула золоту медаль на змаганнях Чемпіонату Європи в приміщенні у французькому місті Віттель. У фіналі львів’янка перемогла суперницю з Росії Євгєнію Тімофєєву з рахунком 6:0, а перед цим Тіффані Банкер (Франція) – 6:0 в 1/8 фіналу, Віолету Міщор (Польща) 6:2 у чвертьфіналі, і Ангеліну Коенде (Франція) – 6:2 у півфіналі. Раніше у командному заліку наша команда здобула бронзу Чемпіонату Європи-2017. Одним з перших спортивних здобутків Вероніки стала її перемога у складі української збірної на чемпіонаті світу зі стрільби з лука у закритому приміщенні 2014 року. Потім вона завоювала золото в індивідуальному і командному заліку на чемпіонаті Європи 2016 року і бронзу в командному заліку на Європейських Іграх 2015 року. Snowboard: Ukrainian Championship With the gorgeous Carpathian Mountains situated in the western corner of our country, Ukraine has itself a real gem to offer ski lovers. Already famous with local tourists, Ukrainian skiing spots are slowly getting on the radars of more distant travelers. The Bukovel ski resort hosted the national competition for the country’s best snowboarders from February 27 – March 1. The event aimed to promote winter sports in Ukraine and featured as part of a series of alpine ski, snowboard, and freestyle competitions during the 2016-17 season. Competitions were held for men and women in both the PGS and PSL disciplines. Zakarpattia’s Anna Mari Dancha took first place in the women’s competition ahead of Ivano-Frankivsk’s Vita Bodnaruk and Kyiv’s Olga Fedak, while Kyiv’s Oleksandr Belinskiy took the men’s title ahead of Zakarpattia’s Yosyp Penyak and Kyiv’s Roman Aleksandrovskyi.

Сноубординг: Чемпіонат України Сьогодні українські любителі та професіонали гірськолижного спорту вже не мусять їздити за тридев’ять земель, щоб знати пристойні траси для тренування і змагань. У відомому не лише в Україні, а й за її межами гірськолижному курорті "Буковель" 27 лютого – 1 березня пройшли змагання найкращих сноубордистів України. Мета цих змагань – розвиток гірськолижного спорту, сноубордингу та фрістайлу в Україні у зимовому сезоні 2016-17 року. Змагались чоловіки й жінки в дисциплінах PGS і PSL. Срібна призерка Всесвітньої зимової Універсіади 2017 року у Алмати Анна Марі Данча із Закарпаття зайняла перше місце серед жінок, випередивши Віту Боднарук з Івано-Франківська і Ольгу Федак з Києва. Серед чоловіків перше місце посів киянин Олександр Бєлінський, на другому – Йосип Пеняк із Закарпаття, а на третьому – Роман Александровський із Києва.

Football: Arena Lviv Trades One Donetsk Tenant for Another

Lviv’s Halychyna Sport Complex played host to the Lviv – Leader 2017 Ukrainian Sport Dance Championship on February 2526. The 20-year event is now on the official calendar of the World Dance Sport Federation. The city’s Leader Modern Dance Club brought together 300 dance couples from around Ukraine – as well as dancers from Portugal, Turkey, Estonia, and Poland – for this spectacular show and popular celebration of dance. Participants competed in Latin and Standard programs in several age categories. The event’s most dramatic moment came in the finals when 5 experienced couples competed vigorously for victory in the Latin program. Poland’s Michal Miniewicz / Nastazja Sypulska came out on top, with Turkey’s Gokhan Zorluoglu / Elmira Apanasova and Kyiv’s Dmytro Pogybil / Alyona Kushnir finishing right behind them on the podium.

Leopolitan football fans will have a new team to watch after Olimpik Donetsk signed on to play at Arena Lviv for the remainder of the Ukrainian Premier League championship. The team replaces Shakhtar Donetsk, who moved their operations to abandoned Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv, empty since the former tenants folded last year. While Olimpik may not bring in the prime Champions and Europa League matchups that Shakhtar did, the team looks set to play in the Ukrainian League’s new “championship round” against the country’s other top 5 teams. Olimpik currently sits in 5th place on 29 points with 3 games remaining in the opening round. The top 5 of the 6 teams in the championship round will qualify for either the Champions or Europa League. Shakhtar bolted for Kharkiv due to lack of fan support at Ukrainian league games, despite running up an undefeated record at Arena Lviv in 2016. The team dropped their first game in Kharkiv – a 1:2 upset to Spanish side Celta Vigo – to crash out of the lucrative Europa League at the Round of 32 stage, just one year removed of making the Europa League semifinal. Olimpik hopes to replicate their Donetsk neighbours’ success at Arena Lviv. The team played the first half of the season at Sumy’s Yuvileiny Stadium and is led by midfielders, Anton Postupalenko, Ivan Matyazh, and Andriy Bohdanov, who together have scored 13 of the team’s 24 goals this season. The deal is good news for Arena Lviv, as the tenants will cover the costs of maintaining the pitch at the stadium. The team opened their Lviv schedule with a 0:0 draw against 9th-place Stal Kamianske. Olimpik Donetsk’s championship round schedule begins on April 1st.

Замість них на полі "Арена Львів" будуть грати футболісти команди "Олімпік", теж з Донецька, які сьогодні посідають 5 місце в турнірній таблиці, мають на своєму рахунку 29 очок і ще 3 гри до закінчення цього туру. Поки що "Олімпік" не може проводити матчі Ліги Європи, як це робив "Шахтар"; йому доведеться задовольнятись поєдинками з 5 іншими претендентами чемпіонату України. П’ять найкращих команд з 6 кваліфікуються до наступного раунду чемпіонату або до Ліги чемпіонів Європи. "Шахтар" пояснює свій переїзд до Харкова недостатністю підтримки вболівальників у іграх ліги України, незважаючи на всі свої безперервні перемоги на "Арені Львів" у 2016 році. Донеччани програли свій перший матч в Харкові з рахунком 1:2 іспанській команді Селта де Віго – і вилетіли з 1/32 Ліги Європи, лиш через рік після свого виходу до півфіналу Ліги Європи. "Олімпік" сподівається повторити успіх своїх земляків на "Арені Львів". Команда грала першу половину сезону на стадіоні "Ювілейний" в Сумах, а очолюють її півзахисники Антон Поступаленко, Іван Матяж і Андрій Богданов, які разом забили 13 з 24 голів команди в цьому сезоні. Угода з новими орендарями – це хороша новина для стадіону, оскільки орендарі будуть покривати витрати на підтримку якості газону. "Олімпік" зіграв свій перший матч у Львові внічию з командою 9 місця "Сталь" Кам´янське. Календарні ігри донецького "Олімпіка" розпочинаються 1 квітня.

Спортивні танці: Міжнародний турнір Львів-Лідер 2017 У Спортивному комплексі "Галичина" 25-26 лютого пройшли змагання зі спортивних танців – "Львів-Лідер 2017". Цей міжнародний турнір, що проводиться вже протягом 20 років, сьогодні внесений до офіційного календаря Всесвітньої Федерації танцювального спорту. Для участі в цьому видовищному святі танцю прибули понад 300 найкращих танцювальних пар з усієї України, а також танцюристи з Португалії, Туреччини, Естонії та Польщі. Учасники традиційно змагалися в латиноамериканській і стандартній програмах та в декількох вікових категоріях. Найдраматичнішим моментом цих яскравих змагань став їх фінал, коли 5 досвідчених пар енергійно боролися за перемогу в латиноамериканській програмі. World Chess Championship: Just One Step Shy of Victory

Чемпіонат світу з шахів: За крок до перемоги Чемпіонат світу з шахів ФІДЕ серед жінок, що пройшов у столиці Ірану Тегерані минулого місяця, був хорошою нагодою для львівської шахістки Анна Музичук позмагатись за шахову корону, щоб не відстати за кількістю титулів від своєї рідної сестри Марії. Кілька найкращих шахісток світу, серед яких і діюча чемпіонка світу китаянка Хоу Іфань, відмовились від участі у цьому турнірі. Хоу Іфань здобула свій титул, змагаючись з Марією Музичук минулого року у Львові, а відмовилася від участі в чемпіонаті через невдоволення системою проведення чемпіонату світу ФІДЕ. Марія Музичук – чемпіонка світу з шахів 2015 року, а також теперішня чемпіонка США з шахів Назі Паікідзе також відмовилися від участі на знак протесту проти проведення турніру в Ірані, де організатори поставили обов’язковою умовою для жінок носити хіджаб у громадських місцях. На турнірі, що тривав цілий місяць, виступили деякі з найкращих шахісток світу, в тому числі екс-чемпіонка світу Олександра Костенюк (Росія), Антуанетта Стефанова (Болгарія) і Анна Ушеніна з України, а також інші провідні шахістки, включно з минулорічною переможницею Гран-прі ФІДЕ Цзю Веньцзюнь (Китай), дворазовою чемпіонкою Європи Валентиною Гуніною і, звичайно ж, Анною Музичук – діючою чемпіонкою світу в категоріях "рапід" і "бліц". Анна Музичук пройшла до фіналу без жодного тай-брейку на свому шляху. Фінальний матч, що став найкращим з усіх чотирьох, виявився драматичним, сповненим емоцій, відступів, рішучих дій і з захоплюючим тай-брейком. Перша партія була спокійною, суперниці заробили по пів-очка лише за 20 ходів. Шторм почався у другій партії, коли китаянка Тань Чжуньі заскочила зненацька А. Музичук в дебюті. Українці довелося відчайдушно захищати невдалу позицію і так і не вдалось врятувати партію. Програш партії в такому короткому матчі зазвичай означає катастрофу, але відповідь нашої шахістки не забарилася. Вона зберегла спокій та витримку в третій партії і скористалась серією промахів китаянки, щоб вирівняти рахунок. Четверта партія закінчилась внічию, що вимагало розв’язання у тай-брейку зі швидких шахів – спеціальність Анни Музичук. Львів’янка була агресивною в першій партії, але змогла набрати лише пів-очка. На жаль, друга партія мала зовсім іншу розв’язку – Музичук помилилась на 39 ході, поступившись чемпіонським титулом представниці Китаю Тань Чжуньі.

It was one step short for Lviv’s Anna Muzychuk at the FIDE Women’s World Chess Championship in Tehran, Iran last month, as the talented Leopolitan player fell in a dramatic tiebreaker in the final to just miss out on following in her sister’s footsteps as world champion. Several top players skipped the knock-out tournament, including the reigning world champion and top ranked female player Hou Yifan. Yifan won her title by defeating Anna’s sister Mariya last year in Lviv and refused to participate at the event due to dissatisfaction with the FIDE world championship system. Mariya – the 2015 women’s world champion – and current US women’s champion Nazi Paikidze also refused to attend out of protest of the tournament’s location in Iran, where it is mandatory for women to wear a hijab in public. The month-long tournament featured some of the world’s top players, including former world champions Alexandra Kosteniuk (Russia), Antoaneta Stefanova (Bulgaria), and Ukraine’sown Anna Ushenina. Other top players included last year’s FIDE Grand Prix Series winner Ju Wenjun (China), two-time European champion Valentina Gunina and, of course, Anna Muzychuk – the current women’s world champion in both Rapid and Blitz chess. Anna Muzychuk cruised to the final, not needing a single tiebreaker on her way. The final match was a Best-of-4 that turned out to be a dramatic encounter full of turnarounds, emotions, strong chess, and a thrilling tiebreak. Game 1 was quiet, with the ladies splitting the point after just 20 moves. The storm began in Game 2 when Tan Zhongyi (China) surprised Muzychuk with her opening. The Ukrainian had to fiercely defend an unfortunate position and couldn’t salvage the point. Losing a game in such a short match usually means disaster, but Muzychuk’s reply was immediate. She stayed calm in Game 3 and took advantage of a series of Zhongyi blunders to equalise the set. Game 4 played to a draw to set up the rapid chess tiebreak – a specialty of Muzychuk’s. The Leopolitan was aggressive in the first game, but couldn’t find a way to a full point. Unfortunately for Muzychuk, the second game was a different story. She blundered on move 39, handing the world title to Zhongyi.
