On May 5, the Leopolis Grand Prix Race will be held, featuring over 60 participants with cars over 100 years old. The event organizers plan the event will promote motor tourism in Lviv and Ukraine, and popularize restoration of classic cars. The goal of the event is to restore awareness of the historic racing route, the “Lviv Triangle.” This competition is included on the Automobile Federation of Ukraine schedule of official events for 2012. The Polish Motor Union has also officially recognized parts of the event for vintage cars classifications. МІСЦЕ ЗУСТРІЧІ – ДУБЛІН Сьогодні Дублін – одне з найпопулярніших туристичних міст Європи. Щороку його відвідують мільйони гостей, щоб поміж усього іншого, відвідати знамениті паби й посвяткувати день покровителя Ірландії – Святого Патрика. Туристам, і не тільки буде цікаво довідатись дещо про це місто. Батьківщина чорного пива Гіннесс: у 1759 році Артур Гіннесс уклав найвигіднішу угоду свого життя. Він узяв в оренду броварню в центрі Дубліна за 45 фунтів на рік терміном на 9000 років! І саме тут тепер виготовляється найвідоміший ірландський алкогольний напій. Десять мільйонів кухлів пива Гіннесс виготовляється щодня у світі. Самі дублінці дуже полюбляють своє пиво і випивають його 9800 пінт (1 пінта = 0,473 мл) щогодини, починаючи від 17:30 в п’ятницю і до приблизно 03:00 в понеділок. MEETING PLACE – DUBLIN Dublin has become nowadays one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in Europe. Every year millions of tourist visit its famous pubs and dress in green to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day. Here are ten trivia facts about Dublin’s fair city: Home of Guinness Black Beer: in 1759 Arthur Guinness made the deal of his life. He leased a brewery in the center of Dublin for 45 pounds annual rent and took it for 9,000 years! It is now where the most famous Irish alcoholic drink is made. Ten million glasses of Guinness are produced daily all around the world. Dubliners love beer, they drink 9800 pints every hour between 5:50 pm on Friday and around 3 am the following Monday. Also a donation to the Blood Bank in Dublin is paid with a pint of Guinness since it is recommended to replace the iron lost during the donation. One city, two names:Dublin has actually two different names! Baile Atha Cliath meaning•Ford of the Reed Hurdles” and Dubh Linn, which in Old Irish Gaelic means “Black Pool”. It refers to a pool that was once on the site of the Dublin Castle Garden. Curious Bridges: Dublin has two very curious bridges. The first one, O’Connell Bridge, go through the Liffey River and it is the only European bridge that has the same width as its length. It was built in 1863 to replace a wooden bridge built in 1801. Before that it was only a rope structure that could only carry one person at a time. Then we have the Ha´penny Bridge. It is named this way because you have to pay a toll of half a penny to cross it. Irish Pubs: surprisingly Dublin has fewer pubs per head than any other European capital. The oldest pub in Ireland is called the Brazen Head and it comes from 1198 Famous People: Dublin has a renowned list of celebrities since many famous people were born here. Writers such as George Bernard Shaw (the only person in the world who has won an Oscar and a Nobel Prize), James Joyce, Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker, creator of Dracula, are Dubliners. By the way, the title “Dracula” is said to come from the Irish words “Droch Ola” which means bad blood.

CHILDRENS’ READING FESTIVAL – PUBLISHERS’ FORUM FOR CHILDREN 27–29 April, Lviv Art Palace, (17, Kopernika str.) The Childrens’ Reading Festival is one of only a few such events in Central/Eastern Europe. These important events focus on educational, entertainment, and cultural activities aimed at the popularization of reading and the development of Childrens’ books publishing. It’s hard to imagine a more positive and enjoyable way to spend time with your children. Young readers and their parents can enjoy a book fair, publishing house presentations, meetings with writers, master classes, book competitions and lotteries, and charity events and exhibitions. Publishing houses from Ukraine and abroad present and promote their books, and an award will be presented for the “Best Ukrainian Children Book,” and there and award for the winner of the national competition for “Best Readers of Ukraine 2011”– with lots of prizes and fun! For the first time the event will feature the Festival of Table games: “Play Sphere”, which will present the best creative table games, and feature a non-stop marathon for table games addicts. Making the event more current will be the “Book From a Showbiz Star”, where pop-stars will meet with fans and tell about their beloved books. The “Night at the Library” event will be held with support of Lviv’s Polish consulate, and is expected to attract many participants. The Annual International Children’s Art Festival, called “In the Circle of Friends”, is a highlight of Lviv’s Mother’s Day programme celebrated on the second Sunday of May. On this day children give personal and handmade presents to their mothers. Lviv citizens and guests have the opportunity to watch this beautiful occassion, while children and their mothers dance, sing, exhibit paintings and crafts, and take part in competitions and festivities. Many theatres prepare special performances devoted to Mother’s Day. To make things more exciting, performances by various folk music groups, Ukrainian traditional musical instruments bandura and sopilka (pipe) players, and dance and vocal ensembles will be featured. All participants will present folk art of his/ her country or region, featuring elements of national clothing and musical instruments. Performances by Bands from Croatia, Slovenia, Poland, and Ukraine are planned for this year’s festival. ANNIVERSARY JUBILEE PERFORMANCE OF SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA K&K PHILHARMONIKER May 03, Lviv Opera and Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.), 19:00 On May 03, the Ukrainian-Austrian symphonic orchestra “K&K Philharmoniker” and the K&K Opernchor is staging a performance of selected classical compositions for Leopolitans and their guests. The program is dedicated to the tenth anniversary of this symphonic orchestra, and feature selections from conductor/composer Matthias Georg Kendlinger and Ludwig van Beethoven. On April 25, Lviv’s night club – “Picasso” will host a concert by the well-known Polish band Budka Suflera. Band Budka Suflera was started in 1969 in Lublin by Krzysztof Cugowski, and after disbanding was resurrected by Cugowski and Romuald Lipko in 1974. They’ve remained active to this day. Best known for their rock ballads– such as “Jolka Jolka” and “Za ostatni grosz”– these songs are often cited as some of the best songs in all Polish rock music. In Lviv their performance will be actively supported by the General Consulate of Poland in Lviv. Ukraine and Poland are collaborating as hosts of the upcoming EURO 2012 championship, and are now strengthening their existing cultural-economical ties. This April Lviv’s “Arthouse” brings to Lviv an extensive program of movie screenings from the Austria. From April 26 – May 06, an first for Ukriaine in Lviv, there will be a winemaking event organized by the Hungarian Embassy in Ukraine. Collector of vintage clothing, Marina Ivanova, has plans to create a museum of fashion in Kyiv. But we won’t have to wait to see some of the precious items that will be there: Marina will present part of her collection of elegant European 18th, 19th, and early 20th century dresses and ladies accessories. Along with the exhibition there will be will be chamber music and dance performances, fashion shows, lectures on fashion history as well as a unique project by photogallery “Prostir” of Yuriy Titovets. Marina’s collection was already presented twice in Kiev – attracting huge interest from fashion lovers. Her private collection collection consists of three dozen dresses, about a hundred hats and bags, and a dozen umbrellas which were gathered by Marina over 30 years. The events is being organized by the Lviv National Museum, the Zankovetska National Academic Theatre, the Lviv Philharmonic Society theatre, gallery “Minus 4” (Kyev) and photogallery “Prostir” of Yuriy Titovets (Lviv) welcomes Lvivites and guests of the city to attend this unforgettable, rich and interesting exhibition. Колекціонер старовинного одягу Марина Іванова мріє створити музей моди у Києві. Але вже сьогодні широка публіка може побачити деякі шедеври її колекції – модні свого часу європейські сукні і дамські аксесуари 19го – початку 20-го століть. Паралельно відбуватимуться концерти камерної музики і танців тієї доби, лекції з історії моди, покази інших колекцій. Відомий львівський фотограф Юрій Титовець, власник галереї «Простір» представить свій проект «З любов’ю до жінки». Ця колекція вже двічі експонувалась у Києві й користувалась великим успіхом серед шанувальників моди. У приватній колекції Марини – понад три дюжини суконь, понад сотня капелюшків і сумочок, кільканадцять парасольок, які колекціонерка збирала понад 30 років. Організатори цього унікального проекту – Львівський Національний музей, Національний академічний театр ім. М. FESTIVAL OF ACTIVE TOURISM AND RECREATION: MANIVCІ

The aim of this festival is to revive the noble traditions of the Cossacks. During the festival, Leopolitans and guests of the city, together with their families, will get the unique chance to experience the atmosphere of the 16th-18th centuries, to learn the traditions of Ukrainian Cossacks and to listen to traditional Ukrainian folk musicians and to try traditional Ukrainian food. Many historical groups from Ukraine, Belarus, and Poland will participate in the festival. The Cossacks had their origins in the 15th century when refugees from religious persecution, outlaws, adventurers, and escaped serfs banded together in settlements for mutual protection. Under the tsars they were allowed considerable autonomy in return for protecting the frontiers; with the collapse of Soviet rule, Cossack groups have reasserted their identity. No. 13: Olena Kulchytska Art without borders

Olena Kulchytska is indisputably one of the most prominent Ukrainian artists of the 20th century. During her lifetime her paintings were exhibited at nearly sixty shows in Ukraine and abroad in cities including Kyiv, Lviv, Berlin, Brussels, Warsaw, Vienna, Helsinki, Cracow, Moscow, Paris, Poznan, Prague, Rome, Toronto, and Chicago. A 1987 UNESCO resolution, commemorating the 100th anniversary of her birth on an international scale, points to her outstanding talent

he Olena Kulchytska Art Memorial Museum was founded in 1971 in the former apartment and studio of the paintress. According to the will of O.Kulchytska the apartment and all her creative work was bestowed to the Ukrainian people in the form of a gift to the National museum in Lviv. The highlights of her variegated work are displayed in the four spacious rooms of the museum. Her early works were characteristic of Modern Secession, a movement where artists threw off the bonds of academic judgment. She then integrated elements Ukrainian folk art and thereby formed an artistic individuality with a strong national character whose creativity ranks with the best artists of the world. Oil-paintings, graphics, samples of decorative and applied art, personal writings, memorial pieces and archives, showed on display, manifest multifaceted talents and achievements of this great Ukrainian artist of the 20th century. Olena Kulchytska demonstrated her talent in a variety of artistic mediums. Her output in oil paintings, watercolors, graphics, weavings, clothing designs, sketches for ceramics, carpets, and interiors, enamel, metal, and smallform sculptures shows the depth of her talent. While this variety could result in weaker works when attempted by a lesser artist, Kulchytska demonstrated an uncanny ability to achieve mastery in all these mediums. Kulchytska was born in Berezhany (Ternopil region) on the 15th of September 1877 in the family of a clerk. She received her primary art education in the private studio of popular Lviv artists Stanislav Batovskyj and Roman Bratkovskyj from 1901–1903. After 5 years study at the art-and-trade school in Vienna she received her diploma. She then travelled around Western Europe, getting acquainted with the museums of Paris, London, Munich. But soon she returned to Lviv, where her parents lived. In Lviv she got acquainted with the best representatives of the Ukrainian intelligentsia, such as Ivan Trush, Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka, Vasyl Stefanyk, Mychailo Kotsiubynskyj. She couldn’t devote herself to her art work because of her family situation. Her parents were old and needed every kind of support from her. So in

1909, when her father died, she started to work as a teacher of drawing first in a Lviv gymnasium for girls and later in Peremyshl’. Kulchytska is known for her great achievements in the book illustration, examples of which are also part of the Lviv exhibit. She illustrated many books written by Ukrainian writers, both contemporary ones and those which were already considered classics of Ukrainian literature. These included illustrations for Vasyl Stefanyk’s short story “The Road” (1917), and Ivan Franko’s long poems “Fox Mykyta” (1922) and “Moses” (1939). Kulchytska also did the illustrations to Ukrainian Demonology by Volodymyr Hnatiuk and Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky. Besides creating numerous bookplates, the artist did portraits of the most outstanding Ukrainian writers, such as Hryhorii Skovoroda, Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko, Ivan Kotliarevsky, Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, Lesia Ukrainka, Ivan Franko, and Taras Shevchenko.

She did the illustrations for children’s books including Bukvar (ABC Book) and Chytanka (Reader) and was also responsible for the design of the Svit dytyny (Children’s World) magazine (1919-39). This magazine’s first illustrator was Kulchytska, and has now been revived. A special issue will feature her illustrations. This may be the best way to promote Kulchytska and familiarize children with her works. Even though she never married, much of her life was linked with children and young people, and for many years she worked as an educator. In 1938 Kulchytska started to work in the museum of ethnography, developing her artistic views and deepening her knowledge. Ten years later, in 1948 she became a Professor of the Ivan Fedorov Lviv Polygraphical Institute. Her pursuit of creativity in a variety of mediums seems tireless: together with her sister Olga they worked on national furniture, improving its decoration and also engaged in carpet-making thus contributing to Ukrainian national decorative art. Her works were exhibited both in Europe and America. Throughout the decades various researchers and admirers of Kulchytska’s art bestowed many superlatives on her: creator of unforgettable images, master of treasures, master of Ukrainian etchings, artist-ethnographer, and people’s artist. The last description was bestowed on the artist not because she received a corresponding title (People’s Artist) in 1956, but because to a large extent her creative work was based on folk art. Olena Kulchytska died in 1967 when she was almost 90 and was buried in Lviv in Lychakiv cemetery. She left a rich heritage of her works, changing Ukrainian art forever: oil canvases, water-colour, graphic works, engravings and even hand-made carpets. She bequeathed them to the people through the Lviv State museum of Ukrainian art. You can see her work of this great artist here in Lviv. ew can resist the compelling charms of Catalonia and Barcelona – both first-class Spanish tourist destinations. The beautiful beaches of the Costa Brava, an inexhaustible trove of artistic treasures and the lively activity of a city like Barcelona are set against a background of exquisite architecture including Romanesque churches. One could spend a lifetime here and, regretfully, never see it all. Just a few immortal names associated with the area: Dali, Gaudi, Miro, and Picasso. And for sports fans, this is the homeland of also FC Barcelona’s football team – reigning Spanish La Liga, UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Club Cup champions. By the way FC Barcelona, considered to be one of the best three soccer teams in the world by sports pundits, travels to Champions League away matches with Turkish Airlines as The Official air carrier of the Spanish club. Las Ramblas, Barcelona’s premier promenade, is also one of Europe’s best. Stretching for one mile from the Plaça Catalunya to the Plaça Portal, near the waterfront, this broad boulevard is divided by a center pedestrian walkway and contains a lively mix of cafes, shops, flower stalls, and street performers. It’s a place where you might spot an organ grinder cranking out music for his dancing dogs, or a mime covered from head to toe in silver paint frozen like a statue. At La Boqueria, a popular produce market just off the Ramblas, fruit vendors proclaim the merits of pyramids of ripe grapefruit and cherries, and fishmongers prepare slabs of salmon and haddock. Montjuïc, was the site for some 1992 Olympic events; Barri Gòtic, the old city; and the revitalized waterfront are more sights to see. A funicular takes visitors from seaside to the hilltop sites of Montjuïc. Rising 699 feet above the city, the large urban park is a mix of greenery and museums. The Fundació Joan Miró is filled with the witty and colorful paintings, graphics, and sculptures by the Spanish master. Highlights of the hilltop Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya are the Roman frescoes, icons, and other religious art of the 13th through 15th centuries. Also on Monjuïc, more than 100 structures by Poble Espanyol show Spanish archi-

tecture throughout the ages. Young children tend to like the ersatz structures, inexpensive souvenirs, and festival atmosphere. The Museu Picasso displays many of Picasso’s early works, even some he did as a teenager. For real but fantastical architecture, check out renowned architect Antoni Gaudí’s buildings, especially his Sagrada Familia. Tourists always have something to say about the unfinished cathedral’s twisting shapes, spiral staircases, and otherworldly feel. Güell Park is known as one of Gaudí’s most colorful works and its playful architecture makes it one of Barcelona’s top attractions. The park was originally meant to be a housing development for rich socialites, but thankfully the wealthy decided not to move to the hilltop, leaving it a public playground. Gaudí spent the first 15 years of the 20th century constructing the numerous fountains, pedestrian walkways and benches in the signature style that are still enjoyed by today’s visitors. One of the most popular spots in the park is at the top of the hill, where one can sit in brightly colored mosaic tile seats and bask in a panoramic view of Barcelona – while capturing some great photos! Another must-see attraction in Güell Park is the Gaudí House Museum. This pink house near the base of the park is where Gaudí spent the last two decades of his life and it is filled with furniture and other works designed by the artist. The Barri Gòtic is a warren of narrow alleys lined with centuries-old stone walls, some of which date to medieval times. Visit the Catedral de Barcelona – begun in the 13th century – during the day, but come back at night when the cathedral’s lighting make the arches and the intricate stonework seem weightless, as if made from paper cutouts instead of stone. L’Aquarium de Barcelona, the biggest in Europe, anchors the city’s waterfront. Wall size tanks display colorful fish from the Red Sea and reefs of Australia and Hawaii. Walk through the acrylic tunnel and see sharks and fish zig-zagging all around you. For sand castle building or swimming, head to Barcelona’s beaches. Lviv Society UK AMBASSADOR VISITS LVIV His Excellency Leigh Turner, The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Ukraine, visited Lviv March 14, 2012. Ambassador Turner met with the Lviv regional state administration’s head Mykhailo Kostiuk and discussed issues of preparations for Euro 2012, as well as investment possibilities within Western Ukraine. Ambassador Turner also gave a lecture at Ivan Franko-Lviv National University, describing his diplomatic career and his duties as Ambassador to Ukraine. One of his visit highlights was a trip to the Сontinental Farmers Group in the Lviv countryside, where Mr. Turner and Governor Kostiuk toured the Farm facilities. They learned about the farm’s technology, viewed the farm fields and discussed possible co-operation between the farm and local authorities. In Lviv Mr. Turner made a visit to the Hetman Sagaidachny Military Academy and met with students from Lviv National University. Speaking about his impressions of the Ukraine, where he is near completing his diplomatic mission, Turner stressed that “Ukraine - the perfect state, but it could be better.” The official dinner for Ambassador Turner was organized by British-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce with active support by companies B.C. Toms & Co, Continental Farmers Group, KPMG, and PwC. The Dinner was attended by Lviv mayor Andriy Sadovyi and representatives of the media, business and government officials of the city.

Opera Passage hosts exhibition “100 years of Hennessy advertising posters” On March 16, 2012 Opera Passage Shopping Gallery held official opening of exhibition, called “100 years of Hennessy advertising posters”. The opening ceremony took place in Leopolis Hall, an exclusive event facility on the 4th floor of Shopping Gallery. Over 200 guests invited to the party were warmly greeted by Alina Radionova, representative of Hennessy cognac house, and Yuriy Pyvovarov, Opera Passage Commercial Director. The party was marked by the fashion show of Roksolana Bogutska featuring its Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Kolektsiya Jewelry Boutique presented its latest exclusive silver collection. Meanwhile, auto fans could have a closer look at Volkswagen Touareg, which was presented at the event by automobile partner AleksCo Company. To round-up this spectacular happening, a delicious festive cake was split between the guests, who also had a chance to participate in contest for prizes and presents from organizers and partners of the event. The exhibition was available for everyone to see all through during March 5-25, 2012. The history of Hennessy cognac house became alive in the walls of Opera Passage, with posters covering the period from 1909 till nowadays. The Nirvana of chocolate has been found, and it is here in Lviv! On March 21, 2012 the Chocolate Museum opened. Here you can learn the history, see the manufacturing process, and – don’t forget! – taste the rich flavors of this glorious treat. Visitors of the museum can trace chocolate’s history starting in ancient times (Information is available in Ukrainian, Russian, English and Polish languages); see how it came to Ukraine, and what Lviv chocolatiers did to it to make it so yummy. The exposition features lots of chocolate figures, from tiny up to human-size! Among the most interesting replicas include London’s Big Ben, the famous Eiffel Tower of Paris, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the Roman Coliseum depicted in 1:150 scale. Each chocolate masterpiece was created by experienced chocolatiers over a period of one to one-and-a-half months. Some of the exhibits of Chocolate museum are available for purchasing for moderate prices from 10 to 250 UAH, and will be a fabulous souvenir of Lviv’s sweet treats. Тепер українська столиця шоколаду має і свій музей цього солодкого делікатесу, який відкрився 21 березня 2012 року. Тут можна ознайомитись з історією шоколаду, технологією його виготовлення, і, що найцікавіше! – скуштувати його просто із шоколадного фонтану. Історія шоколаду сягає прадавніх часів, його шлях до України сягає тисяч кілометрів, а майстерність його виготовлення саме тут досягла своїх вершин. Уся інформація подається українською, російською, англійською та польською мовами. Експозиція складається з багатьох шоколадних фігур – від мініатюрних – до велетенських. Серед найцікавіших – копії лондонської вежі з годинником Біг Бен, знаменитих Ейфелевої вежі в Парижі та падаючої башти у Пізі, а також римського Колізею у масштабі 1:150. На виготовлення кожного шоколадного шедевру майстри-шоколатьє витратили від одного до півтора місяця. Деякі експонати можна придбати на солодку згадку про Львів, заплативши від 10 до 250 грн. НОВИЙ РОТАРІ КЛУБ ЛЬВІВ-КНЯЖИЙ

On March 29-30, Lviv’s Rotary club was attended by the President of the Rotary International, Kalyan Banerjee. On March 29, at Lviv’s National University of Ivan Franko was held meeting of Mr. Banerjee and representatives of 22 Rotary clubs of Ukraine and Poland. Lviv’s Rotary pedigree dates back to the 1930s, but this brief period of Rotary Club activity was cut short by the beginning of WWII. The Rotary club’s charitable ethos returned to Lviv in 1990 during the dying days of the Soviet regime, when the establishment of a ‘temporary’ Lviv branch was achieved. Today’s Lviv Rotary Club community boasts over 200 members drawn from across the city’s business community, with six separate branches. Visit of the high level Rotarian was marked with extremely important and solemn event – presenting of the Rotary Charts to Yury Furgala, president the newly created RC Lviv Knyazhyi. Official reception for Lviv Knyazhyi Rotarians, which took place at “Dnister”, where guests were delighted by fashion show of the latest collection of talented Marya & Ruslan Kostelni (designers of “KOSTELNI” fashion house).

Президент Rotary International Кальян Банерджі відвідав 29-30 березня Львівський Ротарі клуб. В перший день візиту К. Банерджі провів зустріч у Львівському національному університеті ім. І. Франка з представниками 22 Ротарі клубів з Польщі та України. Історія Ротарі клубу у Львові сягає 30-х років минулого століття, але цей недовгий період був перерваний Другою світовою війною. До Львова Ротарі повернувся лише у 1990 році, наприкінці існування СРСР. Тоді він отримав статус «тимчасового», а сьогодні вже налічує понад 200 членів і об’єднує у 6 відділеннях представників інтелігенції та бізнес-еліти. Під час візиту Президента Ротарі клубу відбулась урочиста подія – вручення Хартії РІ Юрієві Фургалі, Чартерному Президенту новоствореного Ротарі Клубу Львів-Княжий. Ввечері ротаріанці зібралися на офіційному прийомі у готелі «Дністер», де окрасою святкування стала презентація найновішої колекції талановитих Марії та Руслана Костельних (дизайнерів Дома моди “KOSTELNI”).

Ukrainian Catholic University Theatre hosted the award ceremonies March 21, 2012 for the Lviv regional competition “Benefactor of the Year 2011.” This was part of the National competition for “Benefactor of the Year”. The SîftServe corporation won the Company Award for Benefactor of the Year for its long term financial support of the Dzerelo centre; businessman and patron of arts Mr. Petro Pysarchuk won the award for Individual Benefactor of the Year, and the Lviv Cooperation society Oselya won the award for Non-Profit Organization Benefactor of the Year. Special “Lviv Social” awards were given to: Sofi Mari Sedova (Ukraine’s youngest fashion designer), Yuriy Fedechko (organizer of the charitable concert- project “Present Child with Kilometer”), Yulia Prus and Khrystyna Stets of TRC “Lux” (organizers of the tele-project “Social Lviv”). Also, Viktor Tupilko (representative of foundation “Chornobyl – Help”), for twenty years financial support of people, who suffered from the Chornobyl disaster, Roman Soltys (sportsman, and forty times world champion) and Sergiy Vyshnevskyi (for active support and employment assistance for children of Chervonograd boarding schools). The Benefactor of the Year –Lviv Region Award was given to aquapark Plyazh for their generosity. Many times Plyazh provided support and free-of-charge services to orphaned children and students of the boarding schools.

Переможцями конкурсу «Благодійник року – Львівщина 2011» стали: В номінації: «Благодійник року – Підприємство» - компанія SoftServe, за тривалу підтримку дитячого центру «Джерело». В номінації: «Благодійник року – Фізична особа» - бізнесмен і меценат Петро Писарчук. В номінації: «Благодійник року – неприбуткова організація» - ЛМГО «Спільнота взаємодопомоги «Оселя». Спеціальними призами «ЛьвівSocial» були відзначені: Софі Марі Сєдова (наймолодший український дизайнер), Юрій Федечко (організатор благодійного концерту «Подаруй дитині кілометр»), Юлія Прус (РА «Люкс» ) і Христина Стець ТРК «Люкс») (за реалізацію телепроекту «Львів соціальний»). Віктор Тупілко, (ВГОІ «Чорнобиль-допомога» м.Донецьк) за двадцятирічну фінансову підтримку постраждалих від Чорнобильської аварії, Роман Солтис (лижник, 40 разовий чемпіон світу) за приклад для наслідування. Спеціальним орденом «Благодійник року - Львівщина» було зокрема відзначено: Аквапарк «Пляж», як соціально орієнтоване підприємство, що надало безкоштовні послуги дітям-сиротам та дітям із малозабезпечених сімей.

LVIV FASHION WEEK – 2012 The 9th Annual Lviv Fashion Week (LFW) occurred March 27 to April 01, 2012, attracting numerous fashion industry representatives, including fashion experts, buyers, designers’ clients and media representatives, who gathered to enjoy the Autumn/Winter 2012/13 preta-porter collections by various designers and brands including Felix Rodionov, Yulia Stakhiv, Igor Ivanyshyn, Bobkova, Ivanna Yukhymchuk, Lyuba Chernikova, Folotvych, Artem Komarov, Amina Gasem, Anna Yakovenko, Alexandr Ocheretny. Also, designers Golda, Sophie Maria Syedova, Nataliya Petrovska, Under Queen, Nedoshytko Uliana, Ksenia Serbin, Vozianov, and Roksolana Bogutska. The main events took place in the The Shuvar-Expo Exhibition Centre’s spacious hall. On March 28, 2012 everything started with a presentation by “Off Schedule” fashion shows by young designers, students and graduates of specialized academies and universities of Ukraine. Then on March 29 Avant Garde collections were shown, featuring outfits of non-traditional, challenging fabrics representing contemporary art fashion ideas. This year’s LFW international program has been headed by French fashion designers On Aura Tout Vu, who presented their latest Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2012 collection: Highlight Fire; whose premiere presentation took place in early January at Paris Fashion Week. This collection by On Aura Tout Vu combined professionalism and creativity: each piece radiated femininity and was met with a storm of applause. On Aura Tout Vu’s designers were enchanted by the hospitality and charm of Ukrainian people, as well as by the high quality level of LFW shows. Among the most anticipated collections was the charity fashion show by Roksolana Bogutska, who presented her new collection; once again proving her creative style skills. Another highlight of the event was the show by designer Fedir Vozianov, known in Europe for his “aesthetic avant-garde” style. Vozianov presented his latest collection of Autumn/Winter 2012 outfits, an exclusive for LFW. Alongside with spectacular catwalk shows, Lviv Fashion Week included hosted special events like exhibitions of contemporary art including painting, photography and jewellery.

Їхній увазі було представлено колекцію Осінь/Зима 2012/2013 багатьох творців моди, серед яких були помітними: Фелікс Родіонов, Юлія Стахів, Ігор Іванишин, Бобкова, Іванна Юхимчук, Люба Чернікова, Фолотвич, Артем Комаров, Аміна Гасем, Анна Яковенко, Олександр Очеретний, Гольда, Софі Марія Сєдова, Наталя Петровська, Under Queen, Недошитко Уляна, Ксеня Сербін, Возіанов, Роксоляна Богуцька та інші. Другий день Тижня моди в розпочався презентацією “Off Schedule” молодих дизайнерів, студентів та випускників мистецьких вузів України. Показ колекцій Avant Garde одягу з нетрадиційних матеріалів, що відображають сучасні напрямки у світі моди, відбувся третього дня цього свята моди. З великим зацікавлення зустріла публіка довгоочікуваний благодійний показ однієї з найвідоміших українських дизайнерів Роксоляни Богуцької, яка представила нову, і як завжди, творчо багату колекцію. Дизайнер Федір Возіанов, відомий у Європі своїм стилем «естетичного авангарду» ексклюзивно представив публіці Тижня моди свою останню колекцію Осінь/Зима-2012. На завершення дев’ятого сезону Львівського Тижня моди у неділю, 1 квітня, у просторому залі експо-центру «Шувар» французька дизайнерська група On Aura Tout Vu представила публіці свою «вогняну» колекцію весна/літо 2012, прем’єра якої відбулась у Парижі в січні. Особливістю колекції, яку публіка зустрічала бурхливими оплесками, є яскраві та напівпрозорі сукні. Гості з Франції були зачаровані гостинністю і щирістю українців і високим рівнем показів Львівського Тижня моди. Крім показів колекцій на подіумах, протягом Тижня моди були представлені також виставки сучасного мистецтва, малярства, та ювелірних виробів.

Rafinad People: glitter & charm of Lviv Fashion Holiday “Rafinad People” Club, Lviv’s luxury night-life hotspot, associates closely with city’s top music and fashion events, so it seemed only fitting to be part of the glamorous parties within Lviv Fashion Week event. “Rafinad People” Club was proud to hold the exclusive party series during March 29-April 01, 2012 first of which – “Models Fashion party” brought LFW designers, models and other leading people in the world of fashion in a relaxing setting comprising live entertainment by “Destino” dance studio, vocal by Oleh Kovalchuk and fashion show by young designers Lida Matvienko, Olga Demkiv, Iryna Zhugel and Katya Dmytriv. On March 30, Lviv’s fashionstas enjoyed another official LFW event with witty host Andriy Fertsak at “RETRO Fashion Party” giving tribute to classic black&white dress code and admiring Retro outfits collections. The final party of April 01, entitled “Official LFW Party” saw celebrities, socialites and Lviv’s fashion royalty mingling and sipping stylish cocktails after the magnificent finals of fashion week shows, boasting, gossiping. As highlight of the party came interesting photo-exhibition dedicated to style and fashion.

EBA Personality Roman Klakovych General Manager, Raitex Ukraine Can we start with an introduction of yourself and an overview of your company? How do you position yourselves on the market? Raitex is one of the biggest Danish owned companies in Western Ukraine and has several business directions. The first one is sewing on tolling scheme. We make products, mainly for sleeping and hospitals, under the famous trade marks, such as Tempur, Barrington, Carpenter. The second one is production of fashion chairs. We sell our products all over the world, from USA to Japan. The third direction is rather new: we produce production pillows and mattresses under our own trade mark “Andersen”. Do you have any plans for expansion? What are your growth ambitions? Raitex puts efforts in each of the business directions. We try to have more “legs” for stability during the hard times. We have just bought advanced quilting machines, which make mattress’ covers nicer and attract more clients. We plan to extend Andersen and make it more known in Ukraine. Today we are selling pillows in all big Ukrainian cities, and Danish materials and our market knowledge makes us more confident in future expansion. What key market drivers are positively impacting your business? Goods, made out of “memory foam” are more and more popular in the world. So we have a great opportunity to increase production. Which business sectors present the most interesting investment opportunities in today’s Western Ukrainian market? I think agriculture and IT still have space for more investors. What is the most important management lesson you have learned? People must be busy. Otherwise they have time to think about harmful things for work :-) The EBA focuses its actions on 7 vectors of economic development- Corruption fighting, Court system and Land reform, Currency regulation, VAT refund activation, Customs Procedures simplification and Technical barriers to trade elimination. Which one(s) so you foresee as the most vital and why? On my opinion, VAT refund activation and Customs

Procedures simplification are the most important. Businessmen find out how to deal with the rest. What in your opinion can be done to improve investment attractiveness of Ukraine? Government has to guarantee that laws are working. Now I hear many rumors about raider attacks on private business – this for sure will push away investors from Ukraine. What are your personal recommendations for anyone who wants to be successful in business? For more than 8 years I worked in Tax Administration. Started in IT department and had grown to

Head Deputy. Afterwards I worked in JSC Biblios producing and selling stationeries. For the last 7 years I work in totally different business – in company which supplies sewing and furniture production. I understand people from business and government because I have been at both ends of barricades. I would advice Tax workers and other State institution not be afraid to change their job. If they want constant challenges they should go into business. Life will not stop, it will be more interesting! If you want to be successful, you should constantly learn new things and move in new directions. If you don’t use opportunity, somebody else for sure will use it!

EBA Lviv Meetings MEETING WITH POLISH CONSULATE On 13 March 2012, in the premises of Consulate General of Poland in Lviv, General Membership Meeeting of EBA Western Ukrainian Branch members took place. Besides the representatives of Consulate General and EBA the meeting was also attended by the representatives of Lviv Regional Council, Lviv City Council and Chamber of Commerce in Lviv region. The meeting aimed to discuss relationships between Polish and Ukrainian business. Mr. Jaroslaw Drozd, Consul General of Poland in Lviv opened the official part of the meeting, stressing on the importance of such event. Mr. Drozd mentioned that Poland is opened for cooperation and for new business players both in Poland and Ukraine. Andrzej Grabowski, Head of Trade & Investment Promotion Department at the Embassy of Poland in Kiev told about the Polish-Ukrainian trade and investment cooperation in the years of 2010-11, noting that Poland is ready to continue to invest in Ukraine. However, during the crisis period the volume of investment may be lower than in 2011. In addition, Mr. Grabowski called Ukrainian businesses to consider possibilities of investing in Poland. Mr. Udo Heine, EBA Western Ukrainian Branch Chairman, in his speech said that EBA, as well as Consulate General of Poland have one goal - to promote creation of more harmonious investment climate in Western Ukraine, and to protect and support those who have already invested in Ukraine. At the meeting speeches were also made by Mr. Valeriy Pyatak (Head Deputy of Lviv Regional Council), Serhiy Kiral (Head of the Foreign Investment Department of Lviv City Council) and others. The meeting was closed up by the informal communication set, where participants had a chance to talk and discuss issues that arise in the relationship between business and the Polish Consulate, as well as to meet the representatives of Polish business, which expressed their interest in the Ukrainian market. EBA expresses gratitude to the companies that sponsored the event, namely PZU Ukraine, Ericpol, Kredobank.

MEETING WITH THE AMBASSADOR OF FINLAND In the premises of Hotel Leopolis, on 20 March 2012, at 15:00 a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Finland to Ukraine Ms. Arja Makkonen and the representative of the Finnish delegation to Lviv took place. Representatives of EBA member companies had a possibility to meet and to communicate with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, as well as with the directors of the companies which operate on Ukrainian market, but by its origin are with Finnish investments. Mrs. Arja Makkonen stressed out that Ukraine, and its Western part is very interesting object for investments and Finnish businessmen have long considered Ukraine as a partner in the development of a business here. The following companies were represented at the meeting: Finnish Trade Centre “Finpro”, company “Orion Pharma”, legal company “Kuzminskyy and Partners”, company “Nokian Tyres”, company “Awara Group” and company “Konecranes”. Participants had a possibility to receive all the interested in information concerning the peculiarities of doing business in Lviv region. It was also stressed out that Ukrainian business may consider entering the Finnish market. For this Ukrainian company must be transparent and have the image of a company that does business in accordance with European standards. The meeting ended up with the informal communication by cup of coffee and tea, where everyone was able to find a partner for discussion among the Finnish delegation representatives.

EBA Lviv Events HR Committee meeting 23rd of March 2012 EBA HR Committee meeting was held at the EBA office in Lviv. The participants of the meeting discussed the topic on Instructing vs. Delegating: What We Actually Do? The invited speaker of the meeting was Olha Sadokha, Head of Training Centre of “Lvivkholod”. Olga Sadokha made her speech as an interactive communication with the participants of the meeting. During the speech Ms. Sadokha clearly, based on illustrative examples, described the difference between Instructing and Delegating, as well as purposes of using them in working situations. Additionally, the invited speaker held a practical task on “Communication as a Key Skill in Delegating”. The participants of the meeting had an opportunity to try different roles of management process and delegating in this process. The practical task led to a lively discussion of the raised topic, which brought a new understanding of the necessity of proper communication in the delegating process.

EBA training center presented: On 20 March 2012, at Citadel Inn Hotel a Master-class from Kyiv Mohyla Bysiness School on “Psychology of decision making” took place. Nearly 120 managers and owners of small and midsized businesses participated in the meeting. The meeting started with a master-class from Yevhen Pentsak, Professor of Finance at kmbs; head of Master Program of Banking and Finance [MBF]. Yevhen Pentsak talked about reflex (on a subconscious level) and reflexive (by reflection and analysis) thinking. He mentioned the phenomenon of “lizard brain”, noted the main features of modern management: excessive selfconfidence, concentration on details and reaction to events. Later on, the expert described a psychology of investment and behavioral economics as the main trends in modern investment management: if planning the future, people tend to save money (China is a vivid example). The opposite phenomenon is “living for today”, and as a result, lack of investment. Also, psychological traps of human thinking, memory,

perception and their effects on management decisions were mentioned. Mr. Pentsak shared principles of successful and rich people’s psychology: not to be afraid of the magnitude of tasks and ideas, have a sense of total responsibility, develop abstract thinking, set simple goals, and ignore difficulties. The speaker stressed that main approach in doing business is to turn the idea into emotional dimension.
