Lviv Welcomes Students From Eastern Ukraine A midst the dramatic events of the last few months, events that have threatened to pit Ukrainians against one another, have spawned a set of initiatives designed to prove that whatever differences exist between East and West Ukraine, there is more in common than different between inhabitants of the two regions. But how exactly are Ukrainians to know that? Nearly 77% of Ukrainians have never had the opportunity to travel abroad, while fully one in three Ukrainians have yet to leave even their own region! With Russian propaganda filling the airwaves of Eastern Ukrainian with nonsense that fascist gangs from Lviv are soon to take over Eastern Ukrainian cities and towns, one initiative organized by Leopolitan students is designed to overcome these fears of difference. “From the East to the West” is a programme to encourage Eastern Ukrainian students that have never had the chance to visit Lviv, to come visit our fine city for themselves and meet its wonderful citizens, all at a subsidized cost. The first students, 80 young men and women from Donetsk and Mariupol, arrived in Lviv on March 21st.

Where Are All the “Fascist Gangs”?

Yulia Hnativ, a Ukrainian Catholic University alum and organizer of the campaign, believes that it is “necessary for eastern and western Ukraine to better understand each other.” Indeed, several participants spoke of the recent turmoil they are experiencing back home. Dasha, a student from Donetsk, explains that “the situation in Donetsk is more tense than in Lviv. Suspicious and aggressive individuals prowl the streets. Many locals are simply too scared to leave their homes.” Yet as dangerous as the region may currently be, many from Donetsk and other Eastern Ukrainian cities believe that it would be more dangerous for them in Lviv. Valeria Svischuk, a 4th-year journalism student at Donetsk National University, explains that she practically “ran away from home to come to Lviv since her parents would not let her go, claiming that Lviv was a scary place to visit.” This is exactly what organizers had in mind to combat when planning the initiative: “everyone who comes here is an achievement in and of itself”, explains Hnativ, “In coming, a person overcomes his or her own fear and LVIV TODAY | April 2014

Lviv OPINION does something new which he or she will take home with them.” She concludes that Eastern and Western Ukrainians need initiatives like “From the East to the West” to better understand one another. First Time Experiencing the Western Ukrainian Capital Participants were treated to a jam-packed weekend, as organizers kept them busy with a variety of activities to facilitate the cultural exchange. As a requirement for participation, it was the first visit to the Western Ukrainian capital for every person involved. Participants were treated to a variety of activities in order for them to learn about the traditions of the city, its architecture, and even its local cuisine. They took part in sessions designed to bring the students together, competed in a quest called “Unite Ukraine”, and even had the opportunity to meet with Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi. Lviv businesses, it should be noted, have thrown their support behind the initiative by offering discounts at hostels, restaurants, and cafes, while tour guides provided city excursions free of charge. Ruslan, a 4th-year Political Science major at Donetsk National University, enjoyed Lviv’s ancient architecture – especially staying in a centuries-old stone building. Bohdan Karasyov, another student participant, was struck by how Leopolitans were accepting of his Russian language: “no one even made a fuss about me speaking Russian all the time although I can also speak Ukrainian. I never felt albeit the slightest hint of animosity or aggression.” Natalia Klymovska, a student from Lviv, was excited at the opportunities that might arise from such an exchange. She noted that the students from Donetsk are “now ready to work … in order to create a civil society there. This simply underscores the fact that the east needs to be in contact with the west and vice versa.”

“Easter Together” The campaign, which is set to run through Easter until the end of May, has turned out to be wildly popular among Eastern Ukrainian youth. The initiative received 800 applications during the first week after it was announced on social media and quickly grew to over 2000 applications, forcing organizers to introduce a quota (only those that have never been to Lviv are eligible). “We didn’t expect so many … to respond to the invite to Lviv,” says Hnativ, “We are aware that, considering the situation in the country, each participant who comes to Lviv is performing a great feat.” In the coming months Lviv students are set to host counterparts from across Eastern Ukraine, including: Donetsk, Zaporizhiya, Luhansk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Mariupol, Kryvyi Rih, and Crimea. One highlight that students here are looking forward to is “Easter Together”, where Lviv students will introduce their Eastern guests to the Western Ukrainian traditions of celebrating the Feast of Christ’s Resurrection. It is hoped that the connections made between the students will lead to visits from Lviv students to their new friends in the East to better familiarize themselves with that region of the country. “From the East to the West” organizers understand that hosting even 2000 students from Eastern Ukraine will not directly impact the events that are currently shaking the country, but they hope to break down the stereotypes and misinformation that persist among Ukrainians and help to reduce the number of Ukrainians that have yet to leave their own regions. The City of Lviv, in 2014, celebrates 758 years since its foundation. Festivities are set to take place from May 1–4 and are already now fullspeed ahead with preparations. The program, as usual for Lviv Day celebrations, is extensive and varied. The holiday has great entertainment traditions, including an impressive street parade, theatre performances, concerts, and festivals to fit any taste. From May 1-2, the Lviv Day celebrations will highlight the jovial traditions and culture of the ancient city by presenting the ‘Batyar Day’ festival. Jokes, songs, and traditional jester-style entertainment – all this and much more await anyone who meets the original ‘Galician phenomenon’ – the Batyar. A Batyar, with his audacious words and his deep-bellied laugh, and who is impossible to mistake for anyone else, is a man you’re likely never to forget. Taking part in the Batyar Day programme, Leopolitans and guests of the city will easily catch the spirit of medieval Lviv and its old city humour. Some things to look forward to during the events are concerts from Batyar bands, entertaining competitions and quizzes for the kids, Batyar song & dance workshops, and tasty refreshments and drinks everywhere for all the participants of this festive city holiday. Ukrainian Easter, a national holiday in Ukraine, falls on April 20th this year (with Easter Monday on April 21st). The majority of Leopolitans belong to the Greek Catholic Church and typical Easter activities in Lviv include Easter bread (paska) blessing, which is usually done on the Saturday before Easter Sunday, the Easter Sunday mass, and various concerts following mass that continue into Monday and even Tuesday. Try not to get wet on Splash Monday in Lviv, where the local custom is to throw water on each other. This is usually done by children, but sometimes by adults too. Instead of typical greetings such as ‘hello’ or ‘good afternoon’, the typical Easter greeting used by Leopolitan Christians from Easter Sunday to Ascension Day is ‘Khrystos Voskres!’ (Christ has Risen!), while the expected answer is ‘Voistynu Voskres’ (He has Risen, Indeed). The Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life hosts the annual ethnographic festival ‘Velyka Hayivka’ that offers a wonderful opportunity for visitors to learn about the springtime traditions of our region and take part in Easter celebrations. Festivalgoers will find workshops on pysanka (Ukrainian Easter Egg) crafting, as well as traditional Easter entertainment for children and adults alike. Some events include ‘Kryvyi Tanets’ (a continuous dance that takes place on the central lawn of the museum), the ‘Pysanka for the Beloved’ contest, authentic dance workshops, and ‘Swing’ amusements. Spring songs and ‘hayivkas’ (special songs heard only during this period – like Easter carols) can be found throughout the day at the event’s main stage. There will also be plenty of competitions, entertainments, and even a pysanka auction. A special children’s area will be available where the little ones can play and have fun all day, all the while learning folk customs and traditions. Цього року в Україні Великдень припадає на 20 квітня і «поливаний» понеділок 21 квітня також оголошений державним святом. Традиційно у Львові ще в суботу напередодні свята люди несуть до церкви святити кошики з пасками, а в неділю після відправи у храмах всі виходять на вулиці, йдуть у гості, на концерти чи до Шевченківського гаю. Для гостей міста, не знайомих з місцевими звичаями – особливе попередження, беріть обов’язково з собою парасольки в понеділок, бо в цей день обливають майже всіх, особливо дівчат. Вітаються у ці дні знайомі й незнайомі (якщо ще хтось не знає) «Христос Воскрес!», а відповідають – «Воістину воскрес!». На галявинах музею народної архітектури й побуту щорічно відбувається етнографічний фестиваль «Велика гаївка", де самодіяльні колективи з різних міст і сіл України знайомлять глядачів з традиціями, піснями й танцями свого краю. Гостей фестивалю чекають майстер-класи з писанкарства і традиційні великодні забави для дітей та дорослих. Обов’язково відбудеться "Кривий Танець" – живий ланцюг, який проходить на центральній галявині музею; конкурс "Писанка для коханої", майстер-класи народного танцю, будуть гойдалки до неба та інші розваги. Протягом дня на головній сцені будуть виконуватись веснянки та гаївки, які співають тільки в час Великодніх свят. Також на всіх чекають різні веселі змагання, розваги та аукціони писанок. XIII LVIV FASHION WEEK May 7–11 Lviv Danylo Halystskyi International Airport 168 Lyubinska St. Lviv is set to host the 13th season of the popular Lviv Fashion Week from May 7–11. The event will be held in a totally distinctive location – the Lviv Danylo Halytskyi International Airport. For five days in May Leopolitan fashionistas and fashionados, as well as guests of the city, will be assessing many collections from leading Ukrainian and foreign designers. Some of the renowned designers to feature at the event include: Marta Wachholz, Mykytyuk & Yatsentyuk, NOVANA Studio, Ivana Yukhymchuk (Lutsk), Lidya Yanitska (Ternopil), Tetyana Kalita, and winners of the SABOTAGE fashion contest – Risych. Special guests to make appearances during the event include the organizers of the Belarus Fashion Week and Belarussian designer Karina Galstyan, who will present her latest Autumn/Winter 2014 collection. The program also features a charity fashion show by Ukrainian designer Olena Golets. Proceeds from the show will be forwarded to the Dzherelo rehabilitation centre. Events slated for May 8th will see 5 collections by 8 talented, young designers from Belarus – participants of the Belarussian ‘Gallery of Style’ contest – as part of the “OFF Schedule”. AUSTRIAN CINEMA FESTIVAL April 25–29, Lviv Art Palace (17, Kopernika St.) Аpril is a big month for Leopolitan lovers of Austrian cinema. The festival’s program is sure to delight the palate of even the most demanding cinematic gourmets as it includes selections of recent Austrian blockbusters that are sure to be hugely popular among Lviv’s cinema lovers. Selections from the festival include three popular dramas: Katharina Mückstein’s “Die Fälscher”, starring Lili Epply, EvaMaria Gintsberg and Philipp Hochmair; and Johanna Moder’s “High Performance”, starring Marcel Mohab, Manuel Rubey, and Katharina Pizzera. Another not-to-miss film is Florian Flicker’s “Grenzgänger”, starring Edmund Jäger, Andreas Lust, and David Miesmer. The story tells the tale of two men and a woman that get tangled in a triangle of love, passion, transgression, and betrayal. Maybe the highlight of the festival will be documentary “Das große Museum”. This feature showcases Vienna’s Museum of Art History – one of the most important museums in the world. It takes a unique, behind-the-scenes look at this fascinating institution while focusing on several charismatic protagonists and their scholarly professions all while unfolding the special world of the museum: as an art institution as well as a vehicle for stately representation. MISS LVIV 2014 May 7th, show begins at 20:00 Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) The Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre is set to host the grand finale of the Miss Lviv 2013 beauty contest on May 7th. The annual competition brings together prominent businessmen, politicians, media representatives, fashion designers, artists, and others that decide who will represent Lviv at the Miss Ukraine 2014 national beauty contest in Kyiv. Several popular musicians are expected to perform at the event, including Erica and Oleksandr “Fozzi” Sidorenko from the TMNK band, while local singers Vladyslav Levytsky and Natalya Karpa will join Ruslana and the Lviv choir for the feature performances during the grand finale. Several hundred of Lviv’s finest young women attended the original casting, of which 14 of the most beautiful were selected to compete in the final competition.

‘SLONIYA’ INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL May 15–18, Lviv Art Palace (17 Kopernika St.) The International Children’s Festival ‘SLONiYA’, a children’s literature festival, will be held at the Lviv Art Palace from May 15-18. The festival began in 2002 as the Children’s Reading Festival at the annual Publisher’s Forum and quickly became one of the few festivals that worked together educational, entertainment, and cultural activities in an effort to popularize the development of children’s book publishing. Starting from 2014 the festival was rebranded to its current name: the ‘SLONiYa’ International Children’s Festival. The festival is dedicated to children’s literature and provides an excellent platform for national and foreign publishing houses to present and promote their books. In fact, one of the publishing houses will be awarded with the ‘Best Ukrainian Children’s Book’ prize. With young readers and their parents in mind, events at the ‘SLONiYa’ festival include: a book fair, presentations of children’s literature publishing houses, literary tasks, meeting with authors from Ukraine and abroad, workshops, book competitions and awards, charity events, and exhibitions. Kids are especially excited about the ‘Book from a Showbiz Star’ feature, which sees pop-starts meet with fans and talk about their favourite books. Another exciting event is the ‘Best Reader in Ukraine 2014’ awards ceremony that will see winners of this national contest be presented with prizes and is generally an all-around good time. As another highlight wil come ‘Play Sphere’ event, which offers creative board games and features a non-stop marathon for board games enthusiasts. Several sporting events will also be part of the ‘SLONiYa’ activities, including lots of open air fun and entertaining tasks led by recognized athletes. FOLK DANCERS TO AMAZE LVIV April 28th, Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Concert begins at 19:00 Ukraine’s iconic P. FLUGERY LVOVA May 1–4, Inner Yard of Lviv City Council (Rynok Square) The ‘Flugery Lvova’ Festival has improved every year since it was launched in 2003 by adding to its programme with new literary events, presentations, performances, and multimedia projects. Over its 12 years of existence, Flugery has involved over 150 bands (over 500 musicians) from across Europe and Scandinavia, North America, and the Middle East. The 2014 programme promises to be very rich and exciting and will feature performances by 17 bands from Ukraine, Poland, Israel, Canada, France, Romania, Russia, Azerbaijan, Mexico. TNMK CONCERT 19 May, beginning: 19.00 Lviv Philharmonic Concert Hall (7, Chaykovskogo str.,) On May 19th, Lviv’s Philharmonic Concert Hall will host concert by TNMK. Tanok na Maidani Kongo (or TNMK, meaning Dance in the Square of Congo), is a popular Ukrainian hip-hop/rock group, founded in the early 1990’s by Oleh Mykhailiuta (Fagot) and Oleksandr Sidorenko (Fozzi). The band’s sound is a nice mixture of hip-hop, funk, jazz and rock. The group also uses real instruments, and not only on their albums but also in their live shows, which isn’t that typical for hip-hop genre. What makes this unusual is that TNMK comes from Kharkiv, which is also known as the cradle of Ukrainian hip-hop, which many say is due to TNMK and its leader Fagot, who helped promote the genre. It was during 1990ies time that Fagot met Fozzy at a casino where both worked as croupiers. By that time Fozzy had been performing with rock band Novye Doma (New Houses) for five years. In 1996, Fozzy wrote "Congo Square Dance," dedicated to Congo Square, a former slave market in New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. The band eventually decided to rename itself after that place. From its inception, the band has had a difficult time being taken seriously and even the city of Kharkiv occasionally tried to censor the band’s lyrics and antics. However things changed when the band won first place at the prestigious all-Ukrainian festival competition "Chervona Ruta," where its single "Zroby Meni Hip-Hop" (Make Hip-Hop For Me) was honored as the smash song of the festival in 1997. Чайковського, 7) «Танок на майдані Конго» (або ТНМК) – один з найпопулярніших українських хіп-хоп/рок гуртів, заснований на початку 1990-х років Олегом Михайлютою (Фагот) та Олександром Сидоренком (Фоззі). Їхня музика – це хороша суміш хіп-хопу, фанку, джазу і року. Музиканти також використовують реальні інструменти, не лише в своїх альбомах, але і в живих виступах, що не характерно для жанру хіпхоп. Цікаво відмітити, що ТНМК походить з Харкова, який відомий як колиска українського хіп-хопу, розвиток якого, на думку багатьох, пов'язаний з діяльністю ТНМК та її лідера Фагота. Саме в 1990-х Фагот познайомився з Фоззі в казино, де обидва працювали круп'є. Тоді Фоззі виступав з рок-групою «Новые Дома» протягом п'яти років. У 1996 році Фоззі написав пісню "Танок на майдані Конго", присвячену площі Конго, як колись називався невільничий ринок в Новому Орлеані, на батьківщині джазу. Пізніше гурт вирішив присвоїти собі саме цю назву. З моменту створення гурту, його музикантів не завжди сприймали серйозно навіть в їх рідному Харкові, де іноді намагалися навіть ввести цензуру на тексти пісень. Проте все змінилося, коли гурт зайняв перше місце на престижному всеукраїнському конкурсі «Червона рута» 1997 року, де їх сингл "Зроби мені хіп-хоп" був визнаний найпопулярнішим. THE HISTORY OF FASHION IN LVIV A

mLet’s start our story of Lviv’s fashion trends from the end of the 19th-Century, a period when the entire world was driven by a passion for beauty, the arts, and novelties in everything. By the end of the 19th-Century, Leopolitan ladies were interested in the “Modern” style, which could be found in every sphere of everyday life – from hats and scarves to furniture and carpets. Ideal clothing among the elite and intelligentsia, the “Modern” style reflected the ‘le bon ton’ principles of conservative and respectable outfits. Representative examples included wide-brim hats decorated with bows or feathers, wide dresses, winter fur with muffs, veils, and thin gloves. Those that did not reflect the ‘le bon ton’ clothing and behaviour were unwelcome in high society. The rise of feminism, along with its ideas about lifestyle in general and clothing in particular, led feminists to becoming leading fashion trendsetters in the 1920s. These women adored formal dresses in dark colours, without decorations or cleavages. During this period, Leopolitan ladies were passionate readers of ‘Nova Hata’, a popular magazine about arts and fashion. Nova Hata featured articles and fashion reviews about the hottest trends in Europe, which greatly influenced local designers and dressmakers. Interestingly, it was in

Lviv that Nova Hata columnists proposed to integrate ethnic motifs into western-style women’s clothes. Decorating the wear with Ukrainian folk sewing patterns, they created an interesting fusion of western and local fashion styles. Among the many western fashion styles popularized by the fashion magazine was the so-called “Garson Style”, which also appeared in the 1920s. “Garson Style” was oriented toward the active ‘boyish’ woman that was able to master any man’s profession, including sport and dance. “Garson Style” jackets and dresses were designed to highlight the slimness of figure by prolonging it, leaving the figure as visually nearly flat. Another fashion trend that caught on with middle-class Leopolitan ladies was the “Practical Style” that featured modest, but elegant everyday outfits. Women dressed in the “Practical Style” were often seen in long trousers and sweaters, made of plain materials.

It wasn’t only Leopolitan women that saw changes in fashion during the early 20th-Century; male clothing also became less strict, which allowed some ‘sporty’ elements and interesting combinations. One of these, which can still be seen today, is striped trousers with a black suit jacket that went well together with a stylish scarf. At the time, the high silk hat gave way to the more informal and romantic felt hat. Throughout WWII, when fashion was geared toward military outfits and formal style, there was little change to the tastes of local ladies. Europe was concentrated on other priorities, so there was no time to introduce new fashion trends. Following WWII, the majority of the population of the former USSR had just one ‘politically correct’ fashion style – “Soviet”. Local fashionistas were at a loss for what to do – to follow the popular slogan of the time “to be like everyone else”, or to follow Western fashion icons. Through the Stalin and Khrushchev periods, Leopolitans were prone to dressing in the style for workers: boring caps, grey head scarves,

funny caps with ear-flaps (vushanky), and wide canvas trousers. Leopolitan ladies, long used to dressing with Western elegance, were now forced into wearing boring outfits, mass produced and worn in all corners for the USSR – from the Carpathians to the Urals and further. But our local beauties did not give up; they began creating original outfits by adding new patterns, ornaments, and models to the local fashion industry. By the 1960s, one of the main characteristics of Leopolitan fashion became the introduction of ethnic ornaments in outfits which led to the wildly popular fad of wearing vyshyvanka (embroidered shirts). Initially party leaders tried to suppress the tendency, yet by the 70s and 80s the majority of Leopolitan citizens had already become in-

terested in “Western” fashion with its jeans, sports jackets, and sneakers. During those times, many cooperative dressmaking and tailoring establishments offered various shirts, jeans, and jackets copied from Western fashion magazines. Over time, those cooperatives were driven out of business as Leopolitans turned to clothing produced in Turkey and later, by China. Presently, Leopolitan ladies are primarily oriented toward a comfortable style; no longer does one see long, tight dresses or hats with feathers. Despite Lviv never having had its own “100% Leopolitan Style”, the women of Lviv have always done their best to dress elegantly and tastefully. In fact, since early 2008, Lviv has even received its own fashion holiday – “Lviv Fashion Week”. The event has grown into a twice-a-year international festival attracting some of the most famous personalities in the world’s fashion industry. As one of the largest fashion events in Eastern Europe, Lviv Fashion Week has welcomed such personali-

ties as legendary Japanese designer Kenzo Takada (the founder of Kenzo brand), Libya’s first and most prominent fashion designer Rabia Ben Barka, and senior eminence of the fashion world Donald Potard (founder of the Jean-Paul Gaultier company). Some of the many other renowned designers to have been featured at Lviv Fashion Week include Russian couturier Vyacheslav Zaitsev, French catwalk icon Christophe Guillarme, and Livia Stoianova – the designer of “On Aura Tout Vu”. Currently West Ukraine’s twice-yearly fashion focus continues to expand its international appeal with every event. Leopolitans and guests of the city will be delighted with the Autumn/Winter 2014 exhibition of Lviv Fashion Week which is set to be held from May 7–11.

n March 28, 2014 in New York at The National Arts Council took place fashion show by designer Oksana Karavanska “Ukrainian Haute Couture Fall 2014”. The National Arts Club is a private club in Gramercy Park, Manhattan, New York City, which was founded in 1898 by Charles DeKay, an art and literary critic of the New York Times to "stimulate, foster, and promote public interest in the arts and to educate the American people in the fine arts" Collection by Oksana Karavanska Haute Couture Fall 2014 showcases 50 models representing both pret-aporter, as well as haute couture outfits. Music for the exclusive fashion show was created by art director of the vocal formation “Pikkardiyska Tertsiya” Volodymyr Yakymets, while accessories were kindly provided by Talia Jewellery. The basic idea behind the collection is clothing which is so self-contained and so extraordinary that it may exist beyond time and fashion. “Its legacy may be inherited by future generations, as it is representing creative, peaceful, confident in it’s future Ukraine. This show is truly fashion for the peace” said Ambassador and Permanent Representative from Ukraine to the United Nations Yuriy Sergeyev in his complimentary speech before the show. The announcement of the upcoming presentation of Lviv designer ignited a lot of interest among American fashionistas - among event’s guests came editors of the recognized fashion magazines (Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, Town&Country, Harper’s Bazaar, ElegantNY, Flatt Magazine, Manhattan Luxury, NUTtiness, Wall Street Journal), representatives of New Yorks’s leading fashion boutiques and malls as well as wives of the UN Ambassadors.

THE JAPANESE SPRING During April 04–06, 2014 Lviv hosted a festival “The Japanese Spring”, organized by the Ukrainian-Japanese Centre of Kiev Politechnical Institute along with the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine and Lviv City Council. ICON EXHIBITION OPENS IN LVIV The “Dearest Image for the Heart” icon exhibition opened at Lviv’s Museum of H istory & Religion on April 4th. The exhibition showcases 50 different icons from the Gorka Castle Museum’s c ollection in Szamotuly, Poland. The collection features 18th and 19th Century icons from Italy, Germany, and Poland. The event was organized under a cultural cooperation program between Ukraine and Poland and was supported by the Department of Religion & Culture in the Regional State Administration. The coordinated performances took place at 13:00 at the airports, which included Lviv’s new terminal, as well as in Odessa, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and at both Kyiv’s Boryspil and Zhulyany airports. The action marked 40 days passed since the deadliest day of the three months of protests when Ukrainians revolted against former President Viktor Yanukovych’s pro-Moscow government. The event was organized by Iolanta Pryshlyak (Deputy Director of Lviv Philharmonic Society / Director of INSO-Lviv Youth Symphony Orchestra), Khrystyna Hranovska (Kyiv), and Olena Rofe-Beketova (Kharkiv), with the support of Bagels & Letters PR agency. At the Danylo Halytskyi International Airport in Lviv, pianist Markian Matseh combined to play with the INSO-Lviv symphony orchestra (conducted by Volodomyr Syvohip) and the Gloria chamber choir, to perform the famous tune. The powerful arrangement was doubly representative as the song is the anthem of the European Union. The event gathered over 1000 spectators who were proud to show their respects for the “Heavenly Hundred” – the 100 people that died during the protests.

У львівському міжнародного аеропорту ім. Данила Галицького академічний симфонічний оркестр INSO-Львів (диригент – Володимир Сивохіп), камерний хор "Глорія", піаніст Маркіян Мацех об'єдналися, щоб виконати знамениту мелодію, яка також є гімном ЄС. У заході взяли участь понад 1000 слухачів, які пом’янули «Небесну сотню», що віддала свої життя в протистоянні з антинародним режимом.

The Lviv Polytechnic University hosted their 7th engineering job fair on March 19th, organized by student organization BEST. Representatives from 12 companies in the information technology (IT), electronics, auditing, education, and engineering fields attended the event. The engineering job fair at Lviv Polytechnic University is an event offered to all students – traditionally, that’s over 2000 participants. Those in attendance were treated to an interesting and intense schedule that featured several presentations, workshops, engineering competitions, and related activities. Students in attendance were excited to meet several leading businessmen and other wellknown personalities, such as Anton BIletsky, Andriy Khudo, Valentyn Yaromenko, Taras Tarasov, and Oleksandr Bondar.

REAL ESTATE & CONSTRUCTION MARKETS SEMINAR The “2014 Prospects for the Ukrainian Real Estate & Construction Markets” seminar, hosted by HD Partners legal and “Aspect” construction companies, was held in Lviv on March 27th. Over the course of the seminar, participants learned about the development tendencies of Ukraine’s real estate and construction markets in 2014. Representatives from manufacturing, construction, and retail found the agenda particularly relevant, especially in regards to the expansion of production facilities and the construction of their own industrial projects. The event’s program was very informative thanks to presentations from representatives of companies with plenty of international experience in engineering and consulting, as well as from governmental institutions. Several presentations stood out, including: DTZ’s session on the development of office, warehousing, and industrial real estate in Ukraine’s regional markets; King Cross Leopolis’ session on the risks investors face when doing business in Ukraine; and Iypneva.com’s session on the new possibilities for the development of Lviv’s infrastructure and improved quality of living. Celebrated Ukrainian fashion designer Roksolana Bogutska, in cooperation with the “Ya Ne Odyn” (I Am Not Alone) Foundation, presented her newest collection on April 4th. All proceeds from the event were directed to the medical treatment of children. ‘Ya Ne Odyn’ is a modern and dynamic foundation that offers opportunities for accessible high-tech medical aid for children in Ukraine. The foundation has organized a number of large-scale medical operations, including 34 that were conducted outside of Ukraine for the first time. In total, 158 children have had surgery based on cutting-edge world practices under the supervision of some of the finest doctors that Europe and America have to offer. Roksolana Bogutska is one of the most popular and recognizable figures in the world of Ukrainian fashion. Her collections are always modern, unpredictable, and brilliant. Every outfit presented at the charity event was made of unique textiles and featured classical Ukrainian folkloric motifs.

OLYMPIC FINALIST’S BOXING GYM HOSTS YOUTH FIGHTS

ПЕРШІ БОЇ ДИТЯЧОЇ ШКОЛИ БОКСУ

Olympic finalist Andriy Kotelnik’s ‘AK Box Promotion’ youth boxing school held their first series of bouts between their trainees on April 5th. After training for the past six months, over 30 youth, aged between 9–16 years, took part in the event. Kotelnik’s boxing school opened up last year on the territory of TM Pivdenny with free training courses for youth. Several famous Ukrainian boxers are among the school’s coaches, including the head coach of the Ukrainian national team, Dmytro Sosnowski. A museum dedicated to Kotelnik was also opened in Lviv, featuring many of the awards and prizes he won during his long sports career, including: certificates of merit, championship belts, and of course, his Lightweight Boxing silver medal from the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

У дитячій школі боксу олімпійського чемпіона Андрія Котельника «АК Box Promotion» 5 квітня 2014 р. пройшли першу відкриті поєдинки на рингу між вихованцями школи. Понад 30 юних спортсменів віком від 9 до 16 років, які займались у школі протягом останніх 6 місяців, взяли участь у цьому заході. Школа боксу Андрія Котельника відкрилась торік на території "ТВК Південний" і від самого початку заняття в ній проводяться для дітей безкоштовно. Юних боксерів тренують відомі українські майстри, в тому числі головний тренер збірної України Дмитро Сосновський. Також у приміщенні боксерської школи відкрили постійну виставку нагород Андрія Котельника, які він зібрав протягом своєї довгої спортивної кар'єри – почесні грамоти, чемпіонські пояси і, звичайно, його срібна медаль літніх Олімпійських ігор 2000 року.

“SILVER EDELWEISS – 2014” LThe “2014 Silver Edelweiss” international sport dancing competition was held at Lviv’s Gratsya Sports Palace (TM Pivdenny) from April 5–6. The competition was held as part of the World Dance Sport Federation scheduled and was judged by Oleh Levytskyi. Qualifying competitions for the Cup of Ukraine championships in the junior division of the Latin-American category were held at the same time.

У той же час були проведені кваліфікаційні змагання юніорів у латиноамериканській програмі в рамках Кубку України.

HALYCHYNA ENDS TUMULTUOUS SEASON IN 9TH-PLACE Lviv’s BC Politekhnika-Halychyna limped to a 9th-place finish after losing 4 of its last 5 games. Following a strong finish in 2013 that saw the team finish 4th and challenge in the SuperLeague playoffs, the 2014 squad faced not only internal turmoil after seeing its coach and several of its top players depart from the team mid-season, but also external tumult as the season was postponed due to the events in Kyiv. To add insult to injury, the FIBA EuroBasket tournament – slated to be held across Ukraine in 2015, including Lviv – is now up in the air due to events in the country. The squad finished with a 1214 record, just ahead of Western rivals Hoverla, who finished in 10th with an 11–15 season.

БК «ГАЛИЧИНА» ЗАВЕРШУЄ БУРХЛИВИЙ СЕЗОН Львівський БК Політехніка-Галичина приходить до фінішу сезону на скромному 9 місці, програвши 4 з останніх 5 ігор. Сезон минулого року команда завершила непогано - на 4 місці і заграла у матчах плей-офф суперліги, але в цьому році команда зіткнулась не тільки з внутрішніми змінами й перестановками, коли тренер і декілька її топ-гравців полишили команду в середині сезону, але й зовнішня обстановка не була найкращою, коли сезон був відкладений у зв'язку з подіями в Києві. На додачу, планований турнір ФІБА Євробаскет-2015, який мав відбутись в містах України, в тому числі й у Львові – тепер під сумнівом у зв'язку з обстановкою в країні. KARPATY ALUMNI MATCH PLAYED TO HONOUR AN “INDIVISIBLE UKRAINE” Arena Lviv, one of the finest venues in all of Ukraine, was the site for an alumni match between FC Karpaty and FC Dynamo on March 29th. Playing under the slogan “Football Veterans for the Indivisible Ukraine!”, the match is played in honour of Sotnia of Heaven. This is the 3rd alumni match between these two great clubs over the last 8 years, and the former heroes from Kyiv took the game 6:2. Honoured guests in attendance included the Kyiv Alumni Football Association, Lviv city council, and Mayor of Lviv Andriy Sadovyi. The Dynamo alumni squad featured such former greats as: Svyatoslav Surota, Volodymyr Bezsonov, Volodymyr Lozynskiy, Sergii Kuznetsov, Yuriy Moroz, Oleksandr Oskymets’, Oleksandr Radchenko, Ivan Iaremchuk, Oleksandr Pryzetko, Eduard Stychmeistryk, Srgii Nahornyak, Victor Leonenko, Oleh Salenko, Oleh Sobutskiy, and Victor Hlus. Leopolitan supporters were happy to such former greats as: Bohdan Strontsitskiy, Volodymyr Riznuk, Anatoliy Saulevych, Roman Tolochko, Andriy Pokladok, Eduard Valenko, Taras Pavlish, Volodymyr Vilchynskiy, Oleksandr Chyzhevskiy, Oleh Yaremyk, Volodymyr Ushvan, Roman Hnativ, Leonid Makovskiy, Volodymyr Sheremeta, Roman Zub, Mykola Lapko, Stepan Yurchyshyn, and Hennadiy Lychachov. FC Karpaty Lviv had a rough month, losing 3 of their last 4 matches. The slump began with back-to-back 1-0 losses to their Western Ukrainian rivals – at home to Volyn Lutsk and away at Uzhgorod Goverla. The team seemed to right the ship with a late March 2-0 home win over Sevastopol, led by strikes from Eugene Bohashvili and Alexander Smooth. The home match was highlighted by Leopolitan fans joining the fans from Sevastopol in their section for a joint rendition of the Ukrainian national anthem. The team followed up this positive showing with a listless in a 3-0 smackdown against Shakhtar in Donetsk. Karpaty currently, after April 12th match vs. Dynamo Kyiv and score 2:2, sits on the 11th-place in the Premiere League with a 5-8-8 record. Upcoming home matches, all hosted at Stadium Ukraina (5 Lipova Alley), include: April 16th vs. Illichivets Mariupol; April 26th vs. Metallurh Zaporizhya; and the final home game of the season on May 11th vs. Metalist Kharkiv.

Проте, наприкінці березня львів’яни здобули перемогу вдома над «Севастополем» – 2:0, завдяки влучним ударам Євгена Бохашвілі та Олександра Гладкого. На трибунах вболівальники гостей і господарів разом виконали український гімн. Але втримати позитивну тенденцію зелено-білим не вдалось - в Донецьку вони програли «Шахтареві» з рахунком 3:0. Attractiveness Index of Ukraine

The Index assessment included a performance evaluation of the investment attractiveness of the regions. Experts believe that the most attractive regions are currently the West and Centre of Ukraine (regional index values – 2.7 and 2.4 respectively), while the least attractive are the East and the South (the same values – 1.9).

“Great expectations” The results of the Investment

After the lowest Investment Attractiveness Index in the history of our research – 1.81 in the fourth quarter of 2013, the assessment of investors has increased significantly – up to 2.72 points, the highest level since 2011. The investigation of investor sentiment – Investment Attractiveness Index of Ukraine – was conducted by the European Business Association in March – April 2014, with the participation of 106 CEOs of EBA member-companies. How did business react to the revolutionary events of late 2013 – early 2014 and the change of the government? Assessment of the investment climate attractiveness for business has increased from 1.81 to 2.72 (out of five), and estimates of expected changes in the investment climate in the next 3 months were the highest for any period of index measurement – 3.6. It is noteworthy that the previous highest rate – 3.2 points - was observed in 2010 after the election win of Viktor Yanukovych, when business expected positive change as well. Business considers that the positive changes that took place at the beginning of 2014 were due to the change of government, the opportunity for an open dialogue between government and society and the expectations of the new, active, and professional team aimed at reforming the economy, overcoming the crisis and corruption, as well as getting assistance from European countries in dealing with financial problems. and related to this, the general economic and political instability, as being negative changes. Also the events in Crimea and the threat of expansion of military operations in eastern Ukraine are considered as negative. Negative Changes in Investment Climate during the last 3 months

Meeting with Vitaliy Naumenko – Deputy Minister of Revenue and Duties Thursday 20 March 2014, 10:00am – 12:00pm the EBA held a meeting with Vitaliy Naumenko, the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Revenue and Duties of Ukraine – in Hyatt Regency Hotel, Kyiv. Representatives of the business community gathered together to listen to the main priorities of the Ministry of Revenues and Duties. Firstly, Mr. Naumenko claimed that he understands the importance of his mission and he will try to do his best to improve the situation using his 19 years of customs legislation experience and his fruitful cooperation with the business community. Therefore, the main goals of the Ministry of Revenue and Duties were agreed as follows: 1. Establishment of a common information group; 2. Abolition of double standards (moving away from the “table system”); 3. Implementation of international experience. Another important point raised was the need for customs to become a service centre without a political agenda.

The situation regarding the 7 key issues that bother business, namely: the simplification of customs procedures, judicial reform, the fight against corruption, technical barriers to trade, VAT refunds, land reform, foreign exchange regulations, in Q1 2014, is the following: None of the indicators according to the business community have risen above the critical barrier in three points – i.e. has not shifted positively, remaining at the level of 2.6 - 3.1 points (the situation is neither favorable nor unfavorable for business). However, despite the fact that the estimates are still in the negative zone, there was some growth in indicators compared to Q4 2013, especially in relation to the judicial system (from 1.6 to 3 points) and corruption (from 1.5 to 3.2 points). EBA Events Tax and Accounting Committee On Tuesday 13, 2014 Tax and Accounting Committee meeting was held at the EBA office in Lviv. The participants of the meeting discussed topic: Influence of currency exchange rates on business in Ukraine. The invited speaker of the meeting was Ihor Pikhurko, Finance Direktor of Hafele Ukraine. Ihor Pikhurko prepared detailed analysis of changes on the currency market over the last period, as well as told about financial risks that companies may face in the year 2014 and provided useful recommendations for their avoidance and reduction. Mr. Pikhurko told about both macroeconomic risks and major risks of the company and professionally explained the financial mechanism of managing them. The participants expressed their observations on the current economic situation in uncertain environment and shared their own decisions in preparation for managing possible risks.

Master Class “Preventing Professional Burnout” On Wednesday, March 26, 2014, 5 p.m. at the EBA office in Lviv the Master Class “Preventing Professional Burnout” was held. Master class was held by business coach Volodymyr Horak, owner of Company "Training and Consulting." Volodymyr Horak told about professional burnout and what risks for the company it causes. Mr. Horak also analysed in detail the causes of the professional burnout, organizational techniques to overcome burnout and methods of reducing the influence of stress on the body. The participants got answers to the questions: how to increase your stress resistance in 2 weeks; how to stop being busy and start bringing tangible results; how your workflow affects your efficiency; and learned skills to properly respond to stressful situations and efficient workflow.

Yevgen Hlibovytskyy – founder of pro.mova, an expert company – an independent think tank dedicated to values research and focused on modernization issues in the former Soviet countries. Now pro.mova is a platform for initiative Krym_SOS, in 2008 during the war, the company created the Georgian press center in Ukraine. Mr. Hlibovytsky is a member of The Nestor group working on long term vision for Ukraine. He was part of the expert group which completed a similar project in the city of Lviv. He lectures at Kyiv-Mohyla Business School and Lviv Business School at the Catholic University. In early summer 2013 Yevgeny Hlibovytsky cofounded hromadske.tv. In 2002 co-foundedChannel 5. Between 1995 and 2005 he worked in journalism. In 2001 – one of the leading journalistic of resistance movement against censorship. Yevgen Hlibovytskyy began his presentation with an overview of recent economic and political changes in Ukraine and said that under the new balance of power in the global world, Ukraine is bound for fundamental changes and great reforms. These changes apply to both economic and social reforms at the state level and everyday business decisions. Mr. Hlibovytsky noted that the most promising resource of Ukraine is middle class and expansion of business activity is the most important thing for the growing of the middle class now. Without these processes it is very difficult to imagine any good prospects for the middle class.

Ukraine parliament supports anti-crisis law

Ukraine's parliament voted in favor of an anti-crisis law accepting austerity measures demanded by the International Monetary Fund as part of a $14-18 billion bailout package. On 1 April 2014 the Law of Ukraine “On the Prevention of Economic Catastrophe and Creating Conditions for Economic Growth in Ukraine” came into force. Adoption of law was due to the necessity to prevent financial disaster, to create conditions for economic growth in Ukraine, to increase revenues and to improve certain provisions of the Tax Code of Ukraine. Moreover, the Law is needed in order to implement measures for the economical and efficient use of public funds, to prevent loss of budget and to provide social support for the citizens, based on the financial capacity of the state. According to the Law, the following changes commence starting 1 April 2014: −corporate income tax rate has been permanently fixed at 18%, and the VAT rate – at 20%; −7% VAT applies to the supply of pharmaceuticals and medical products; −rates of subsurface rent for the mining of minerals have been increased; −0.5% contribution to the pension fund is applied to the purchase of cash and non-cash foreign currency by businesses and individuals; -rates for new cars and motorcycles with engine capacity exceeding 0.5 liters have been increased twice; -the total number of law enforcement agencies is reduced; -the accrual of special pensions in the amount of 80% of salary for judges, prosecutors and civil servants is canceled due to the transfer to general principle of calculating pensions equal to 70% of salary. Starting 1 July 2014 personal income tax will apply to passive income which includes dividends, winnings, prizes, as well as interest in excess of 17 times the amount of the minimum living wage established as at 1 January of the reporting year (currently – UAH 20,706) which means 15% for taxable income which exceeds 204 minimum living wages; 20% for taxable income which exceeds 204 minimum living wages but does not exceed 396 minimum living wages; 25% for taxable income which exceeds 396 minimum living wages. Another innovation concerns increased rates of excise tax that will apply to the import of beer (increased by 42.5% starting 1 May 2014); tobacco goods (increased by 25% starting 1 July); ethyl alcohol and certain alcoholic beverages, e.g., potent wine, sparkling wine, vermouth, cider etc. (increased by 25% starting 1 September 2014); passenger vehicles (double increase starting 1 April 2014). According to the Acting President, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov the adoption of anti-crisis package of laws by the Verkhovna Rada creates preconditions for economic growth, opens the way to holding of anti-crisis measures by the Cabinet of Ministers and therefore it is essential for the stabilization of situation in our country.
