National Chocolate Festival October 17–19, Lviv Art Palace (17 Kopernika St.) If you are looking for a romantic event to take your special someone to, look no further than the 2014 National Chocolate Festival, set to be held at the Lviv Art Palace from October 17th–19th. This tasty event is an all-around great experience not only for couples, but for friends, families, and guests of the city alike to discover the fascinating story behind this ‘food of the gods’. Lviv is famous for its chocolate and event visitors will be ‘treated’ to a wondrous variety of this divine delicacy and will even get to try their hands at making it themselves. This year’s program features several events designed to celebrate the snack, including: the ‘Chocoland’ chocolate fair, featuring fun games and competitions for the little ones; the ‘Choco Fashion’ fashion show by designers of Lviv Fashion Week; chocolate dessert-making workshops; and a bevy of tasting sessions. Leopolitan cinema-lovers and fans of the German language across Galicia are set to be treated to an exciting selection of modern German movies during the German Film Fest from October 10th-19th. This year’s festival is set to be held at the Lviv Art Palace and will feature the finest films from Germany over the past 12 months. The films, making their Ukrainian premieres at the festival, represent a variety of genres. Hit films to be featured include: Die Geliebten Schwestern, a romantic drama centering on the love triangle between a rising poet and two aristocratic sisters; Edgar Reitz’s historical drama Die Andere Heimat – Chronik Einer Sehnsucht; Benjamin Heisenberg’s comedy Über-Ich und Du; and Andreas Prochaska’s western Das Finstere Tal. Special attention is expected to be drawn to the showing of Juliano Ribeiro Salgado’s biographical documentary The Salt of the Earth, which takes an in-depth look at the life of legendary Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. This October, Lviv is expected to plunge into the world of acoustic rock as the greatest acoustic festival in Ukraine – Lviv Acoustic Fest 2014 – is set to rock the city from October 18th–19th. Lviv has always prided itself as being one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan classical music centres and in recent years this reputation has increasingly attracted more quality performers. A case in point is conductor Georg Kugi’s excellent K&K Philharmoniker Orchestra, which will perform at Lviv’s S. Ludkevich Philharmonic Concert Hall on November 19th. Born in Austria, Kugi received his first diploma as a flutist at the Klagenfurt Conservatory. Continuing his studies at the Vienna University of Music, he finished his Masters in Music Education with emphasis on the flute and piano. From 1985, Kugi was the music director at Vienna’s Bretterhaus Theatre and Young Austrian Music Theatre (with Menotti’s ‘Medium’), and additionally took part in a production of the Vienna Chamber Opera. He has held the position of Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the four-nation International Danube Philharmonic Orchestra since 2003 and has been working with DaCapo since 2004. As a long-time member of the VIENNA FLAUTISTS ensemble, Kugi has devoted his time and intense energy on the field of chamber musice, appearing all over the world and recording several CDs. He also has been a Professor at the Vienna Musikgymnasium since 1994. The K&K Philharmonic Orchestra is an ensemble of over 70 top European musicians. The group was brought together back in 2002 and have been making a name for itself ever since. Their concert in Lviv will offer a taste of Verdi’s immortal music – his inspiring and soul-stirring melodies. Георг Кугі народився в австрійському місті Філлах, свою першу музичну освіту флейтиста отримав у консерваторії м. Клагенфурт. Продовжив навчання у Віденському музичному університеті по класу флейти і фортепіано. З 1985 року Георг Кугі був музичним керівником Віденського театру Бреттерхаус, Молодого австрійської музичного театру і брав участь в постановках Віденської камерної опери. З 2003 року обіймає посаду головного диригента та художнього керівника Міжнародного оркестру Дунайської філармонії, а з 2004 року співпрацює з агентством Dacapo. Виступаючи тривалий час з ансамблем VIENNA FLAUTISTS Георг Кугі працював переважно в області камерної музики, гастролюючи по всьому світі і записуючи численні компакт-диски. З 1994 року Георг Кугі був професором Віденської Musikgymnasium. До складу оркестру входять понад сімдесят найкращих європейських музикантів, які познайомились ще в 2002 році і відтоді їх майстерність і слава лише зростають. Boombox: 10 Year Anniversary Concert October 25th. Concert begins at 20:00. Ukraine Sport Palace (18 Melnyka St.)

Skyrpka’s Jazz-Cabaret November 4–5, show starts at 19:00 Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Oleh Skrypka, frontman of the iconic Ukrainian folk rock band VV (Vopli Vidoplyasova) and founder of several popular music festivals including Kraina Mriy and Rock’N’Sich, will visit Lviv for a set of two concerts on November 4th and 5th. Each concert will be divided into two exciting, but different styles. The first will feature the traditional jazz-cabaret soirees of Leopolitan émigré Bohdan Veselovky, who lived in Lviv in the interwar years before seeking political asylum in Canada. The famous composer is considered to be one of the innovators of Ukrainian popular music and his light and rowdy tracks were commonly heard at cafés and restaurants around Lviv. Indeed, his songs were so popular that they were played all over Galicia and Bukovyna. A few even became to be considered folk songs, including Brown Eyes. Skyrpka managed to uncover these irreplaceable materials in Toronto and decided to reproduce the arrangement and performance. In this sense, Leopolitan audiences will be delighted by the evening’s atmosphere, which promises to be full of elegance and light humour as they are shipped back in time to an interwar Galician pub. The second part of the concert will feature legendary world hits such as Fever, Tombe La Neige, and Hotel California. One of Ukraine’s most popular bands – Boombox – is set to perform in Lviv as part of their 10th-anniversary tour on October 25th at the Ukraine Sport Palace. The always-entertaining Dakh Daughters are coming back to Lviv for a concert at the Mariya Zankovetska National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theatre on November 10th. The Dakh Daughters are a Ukrainian music and theatre project started in Kyiv in 2012 that consist of 7 women that play various instruments and sing in different languages and dialects. "Brothers Hadiukiny" November 07, beginning: 20:00 Sport Palace ‘Ukraine’ (18, Melnyka str.) The legendary Brothers Hadiunkiny are coming to Lviv for a concert at the Ukraine Sport Palace on November 7th to promote their new album Made in Ukraine. Brothers Hadiunkiny (Braty Hadyukiny), or simply Hady, was one of the most successful Leopolitan bands during the Ukrainian Soviet era. Their musical style fuses many different musical genres, including rock, blues, punk, reggae, funk, and folk. Their ironic lyrics are known for their use of local idioms, slang, and surzhyk (mix of Ukrainian & Russian language).The band was most active between 1988 and 1996, but they made a memorable appearance in January 2006 when they held a giant solo concert in Kyiv that was a major media event that attracted several famous Ukrainians, including the Prime Minister at the time (Yulia Tymoshenko). The band held a tribute concert in 2011 following the death of the band’s leader – Serhiy Kuzminskyi – and was joined by prominent Ukrainian rock stars like Okean Elzy, VV (Vopli Vidoplyasova), and Komu Vnyz. The Brothers Hadiunkiny have released their first album since 1996 – Made in Ukraine – and Leopolitan music lovers are waiting in anticipation for their return on November 7th at 20:00. Lviv Book Forum 2014 Leopolitan literature lovers were treated to Lviv’s literary event of the year in September as the annual International Lviv Book Forum was held from the 11th-14th. This major event, held now for the 21st time, featured publishers from over 20 countries in Europe and North America. The four-day forum was dedicated to the 440th anniversary of the first book printed in Ukrainian and featured a number of events, including the ‘Third Age: The Pleasure of Reading’ charity event for the elderly and an enormous book fair. The first day was dedicated to the Lviv Library Forum – organized by the Lviv Library Association – and featured the ceremony for the Best Forum Book awards. Other events part of Lviv’s International Literary Festival included the ‘Taras Shevchenko in Time & Space’ project dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the poet’s birth, and the ‘Intermezzo’ festival of short stories dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mykhailo Kotsubynskyi. There was plenty to keep forum patrons busy, including the chance to enjoy the night of poetry and nonstop music featured during the Young Poets Republic, the Lviv – City of Literature exhibit, and the Woman in a Changing World project.

Увагу книголюбів з усієї України і багатьох зарубіжних країн привернув львівський Міжнародний книжковий форум, який пройшов з 11 до 14 вересня. Ця найважливіша подія українського книжкового ринку, на якій побували видавці й автори з понад 20 країн Європи та Північної Америки, відбулась уже 21-й раз. Чотириденний форум був присвячений 440-річчю книгодрукування в Україні; на ньому відбулась низка різноманітних культурних заходів, в тому числі й благодійна акція «Третій вік: задоволення від читання» і традиційний книжковий ярмарок. У перший день цього свята книги відбувся бібліотечний форум, організований Львівською бібліотечною асоціацією, під час якого вручали нагороди переможцям конкурсу на найкращу книгу. The Rapid Trident 2014 joint-military Situational & Field Training Exercise was held in the City of Yavoriv (Lviv Oblast) from September 16th-26th. The exercise was opened with a special ceremony at the Petro Sahaidachny Army Academy’s International Peacekeeping & Security Centre on September 15th. Rapid Trident is designed to support the interoperability of Ukraine’s forces with those of the United States, NATO, and other Partnership for Peace member nations. In all, 1,200 personnel from 15 nations took part in the exercises. The exercises, which come at the request of the Ukrainian government and military, featured a combined, internationally-staffed battalion focused on peacekeeping and stability operations. Participating nations included: Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Canada, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, and the USA. Спільне українсько-американське тактичне навчання Репід Трайдент-2014 проходило на полігоні у Львівській області з 16 по 26 вересня. Урочиста церемонія відкриття відбулась в Міжнародному центрі миротворчості та безпеки Академії сухопутних військ ім. гетьмана Петра Сагайдачного 15 вересня. Завдання навчань – відпрацювання і підтримка взаємодії збройних сил України з підрозділами інших держав-учасниць НАТО та інших учасників програми «Партнерство заради миру». Загалом понад 1200 військовослужбовців з 15 країн взяли участь у навчаннях. Навчання відбулось на запрошення українського уряду і й міністерства оборони; його метою було створення комбінованого батальйону міжнародних сил для виконання миротворчих операцій. Військовики з Азербайджану, Болгарії, Канади, Грузії, Німеччини, Великобританії, Латвії, Литви, Молдови, Норвегії, Польщі, Румунії, Іспанії та США знайшли спільну мову зі своїми українськими колегами та змогли навчитись багато чого один в одного.

For a city renowned worldwide as one of the ‘Coffee Capitals of Europe’, it’s no wonder the city knows how to host a party in honour of the famous bean. Lviv’s central Rynok Square was host to Lviv’s annual Coffee Festival from September 18th-21st. Now in its eighth year, the festival is a major event marked on the calendars of Lviv’s architecturally and thematically unique coffeehouses. This year’s entertaining festivities included the ‘Bikes Coffee Mile’ as well as the giant ‘Make Coffee, Not War’ mural made from coffee beans. Among the most anticipated events of the festival each year is the opportunity for Leopolitan coffee-lovers and guests of the city to select their favourite coffeehouses in a number of categories. Some of this year’s winners include: Glory Café for Best Coffeehouse 2014; the Coffee With History award went to the exquisite 17th-Century interior of Atlas Café; while the famous desserts at Black Coffee led to their award for Something Sweet With Coffee. Other winners included: Kredens Café for Best Takeout Coffee; Fiksazh for Best New Coffeeshop; and Na Bambetli for Lviv’s Best Turkish-Style Coffee (using a Cezve).

Серед найцікавіших подій, мабуть, варто відзначити «Кавову велоМИЛЮ» для любителів і кави і двоколісного транспорту, а також величезне панно з кавових зернят з силуетом Домініканського собору і написом MAKE COFFEE. NOT WAR. Серед найбільш очікуваних подій фестивалю щороку є голосування львів’ян і гостей міста за найкращу кав'ярню в кількох категоріях. Переможцями цього року стали: «Найкраща кав'ярня Львова» – Glory Cafe; «Кава з історією» – «Атляс», що на Ринку; у номінації «Кава і до кави» перемогла кав'ярня Black coffee. Lviv Fashion Week: Spring/Summer 2015 Some of Lviv’s finest and most popular venues were host to the Lviv Fashion Week: Spring/Summer 2015 fashion shows from October 3rd-5th. Keeping current events in Ukraine in mind, this season’s event was adjusted by organizers to become shorter, more open, and charitable. Some of Ukraine’s most promising designers had their collections of outfits and accessories featured through the OFF Schedule and SABOTAGE projects. The festival’s premiere event was the fashion show hosted at the Western Ukrainian Automobile House on October 5th. The audience was charmed through collections by Kateryna Karol, Inna Ihnatievska, and Kostel’ni, while all proceeds raised were to be donated for the needs of the Ukrainian army. Natalia Grechana

Book's / Книги Lviv, city of paradoxes The team from the Netherlands consisted of two architects, journalist (writing about Lviv since its preparation for Euro2012) and two philosophers presented a book 'Lviv, city of paradoxes'. The work at the book, which is a photo album of high quality containing detailed essays on various aspects of perception Ukrainian life by foreigners, lasted for two years. 'There have been many guides and photo albums about Lviv published. Mostly, they all reflect local natives' views and opinion on the city. The Dutch decided to present Lviv in the way foreigners see it', said Honorary Consul of the Netherlands in Ukraine Bohdan Pankevych, who also contributed to the writing of the book. The next day Casanova was seen at Lychakiv and since that he was feeling better and lifted in spirits. Recipe of Kalhanivka was found at the attic of one of the houses located at Lychakiv, so there is huge possibility that it was the same brew that restored Casanova’s health. Vytynanky: The Cutting Edge Craft

Vytynanky – the art of cutting paper designs – is just one of the many features of traditional Ukrainian culture. While not as prominent as its artistic cousins embroidery or pysankawriting (Ukrainian Easter Eggs), it is nonetheless an important part of the genetic memory of the nation and deserves to be promoted as an integral part of traditional Ukrainian culture.

ytynanky can also be found in horizontal frieze-like bands and can be found to have one, two, or several axis of symmetry. Arrangements are often found in rhythmical sequences. Vytynanky varies from region to region, with some remaining monochrome while others are multi-coloured. Some are even adorned with beads or other colourful and shiny items. Even skilled vytynanky makers, after folding sheets of paper several times, can be unsure of what shapes will emerge as they cut out their fancy shapes. It is this unpredictability that creates a sense of playful lightness and ambiguity, like a mysterious fairy-tale. Certainly, this wonderful Ukrainian craft can be as limitless as its creator’s imagination . A New Art Form Emerges The history of paper-cutting in Ukraine dates back to the late 15thCentury, but it took some time before the art was considered an integral part of Ukrainian decorative arts. Originally, the paper cutouts were primarily used by the upper classes for sealing private letters or official communiqués with sealing wax. Incidentally, these were the same reasons paper cutouts were being used in many other European countries at the time. Paper at that time was very expensive, and it was only when the costs dropped that vytynanky became popular for decorative use in people’s homes. Throughout the 19th-Century decorative paper cutouts spread all across the Ukrainian countryside. In addition to the purely deco-

The word itself – vytynanky – gained currency only in the early 20th Century. Before that many other regional words were used to describe the art, like stryhuntsi, khrestyky, or kvity, to mention but a few. Vytynanky could be found in any size or shape and often represented stylized figures of people, animals, or plants. Ethnographers began to take an interest in the craft and artists started seeking inspiration for their own paper-cutouts. Articles and essays were published, and collectors began to form collections. Soon vytynanky could be found at exhibitions of Ukrainian decorative and applied arts, alongside traditional pottery, embroidery, rugs, and pysanka. Prominent collections of early 20th-Century vytynanky can now be found at the Museum of Ethnography & Applied Arts at the Institute of Folk Culture Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Lviv. Other collections can be found in Kyiv, Krakow, St. Petersburg and Moscow. As the craft is made of paper and is easily damaged or destroyed, preservation is difficult and only maintained if special conditions are undertaken. Most people that made vytynanky for home decoration would simply throw them away and create new ones each time they repainted their home interiors. Like other crafts of the time, it was mostly women that were responsible for their creation and special occasions, such as Christmas or Easter, called for particularly intricate crafting. Popular themes for weddings included doves, flowers, and trees, representing peace, prosperity, and new life. For a time in the 1970s it looked as though the art of vytynanky might die out, but the craft has experienced something of a revival and today children are taught the basics of the art at school, ensuring that it lives on and remains a truly Ukrainian cultural art form. Arrives in West Ukraine AMC Assist Lviv represents American Medical Centers' pre-opening clinic office in Lviv, providing 24-7 on-call family practice-based primary, specialty, diagnostic, emergency and acute care services to Ukrainian nationals and foreign residents, tourists, and business travelers. We caught up with AMC Assist's Managing Director, Alex Sokol, to speak about AMC, AMC Assist and their development in Lviv. Lviv Today: What made you chose to expand into the Lviv market? AMC: About a year ago we started thinking about our physician and referral network abilities and resources, and began looking at cities that we felt could support a physician office and a sizeable future clinic investment. As we have a number of different organizations and corporate clients that have employees and family in western Ukraine, we wanted to have a presence, not only to serve our resident health and insurance plan clients but to further our development to an increasingly relevant and growing market.

Lviv Today: What are your expectations in entering the Lviv market? AMC: We feel Lviv has tremendous potential for private health services in developing convenient and accessible concierge-care driven models. While disposable health spending is quite low compared to Kyiv or other CEE markets, we sense that demand for both private physicians, expert second-opinion, and EU hospital referral access will continue to grow as the city and its economy develop. Recent acquisitions and health service investments are a good harbinger for

Lviv Health continued investment. So we feel that Lviv represents a terrific opportunity to develop our model and increase the quality of primary and secondary health provider services in the area. We want to do that first with our AMC Assist model. Lviv Today: How does the Ukrainian healthcare market compare to other regional markets? AMC: We have been in Ukraine since 1996 in a provider, referral, insurance and assistance capacity. Of course it has not been the smoothest road, and the last year has been very challenging for most. Compared to other CEE markets, private healthcare in Ukraine is in its infancy, significantly under-developed and under-capitalized, lacking major public and private investment. Reassuringly, private care continues to drive investor interest. Recent foreign investments (2012- 2013) in larger hospital networks, or specialty clinics, specifically two target groups in Kyiv and Odessa, and a smaller investment in Lviv, are positive and will drive an increasingly competitive private market. We believe that given the choice, technology, opportunity, and affordability, private care, like some of our existing Lviv partner clinics, will drive demand, creating a better service in both the diagnosis of care, delivery, and ultimately, better health outcomes.

Lviv Today: Which AMC Services are most indemand? AMC: Our urgent-care clinic network began in the early 1990s.Through the years we have operated a total of eight outpatient and dental facilities and a twenty-five bed specialty hospital, the American Hospital of Moscow. Today, we are the only Western-owned and managed health provider in Ukraine offering over 20 specialty services with laboratory, diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, assistance, insurance plans, and evacuation services. In Ukraine, we are first and foremost an urgent-care clinic and assistance network, and so most services tend to be primary or general specialist, family practice, or preventative car based services—consultations, diagnostics, specialty referral, and hospital coordination. In Lviv, and with our assistance office, we expect to work closely with existing individual and corporate clients and visitors as well as our national and international insurance and assistance affiliates and partners. Lviv Today: What do you see as the healthcare development priorities for today’s Ukraine? AMC: There is a great deal of work to do and in the current state, everything becomes a priority—health budgeting and procurement, education and training, privatization, fighting corruption, strong leader- ship, pharmaceutical regulation, accessibility and legislation, and more. Today, Ukraine spends near 4 percent of its gross domestic product on the sector, compared to the EU’s 8.5%, so spending, and its transparency and accountability, is essential. Transforming Ukraine’s massive State hospital and polyclinic behemoth and executing a mandatory national insurance model, I believe, must also be a priority, something our current Health Minister, Oleg Musiy, has demonstrated in his progressive reform agenda. Over 10 years of succesful Danish-Ukrainian performance Leading Danish business consultant Anders Johansen has been active in the Lviv Region since 2001 and has assisted a wide variety of international businesses to enter Ukraine. He has witnessed the growth of the international investment community from the inside but believes that there is still a lot that needs to be done to create an investment climate that will prove regionally competitive.

Lviv Today: What’s the story behind the startup of your consultancy company? My first business trip to Ukraine took place back in 2001. I was sent from Denmark to Ukraine to establish a textile company – a green field project in Novoyavorivsk. That period in Ukraine was especially appealing for foreigners as we saw an up-and-coming star in Ukraine’s economy and were willing to invest. Even before I finished the Danish project in late 2002, two other companies had already asked me to help them establish a business in Ukraine as I was already familiar with the market and knew how building a startup worked. I realized there was a big future for similar requests from foreigners since so many saw the great potential Ukraine offered. I decided to start my own consultancy company that would help attract foreign investors. Fortunately, that turned out to be a great decision and the business grew very quickly – from just 3 employees at the start to the fullysupplied office of professionals that we work with now. Lviv Today: What obstacles did you face when you were developing the market and how did you overcome them? Gaps in legislation have always been the biggest problem for any businessman to do business in Ukraine. There are a handful of unclear and uncertain regulatory acts that seem to have been created to make manipulations and misinterpretations easier, especially in favour of executives. Many such gaps remain unchanged. This is a stick with two ends because solving such regulatory conflicts and finding solutions is exactly what J&L does best. It was very difficult to find qualified people with experience, both for us and for our clients, as employees are always the main asset for any company. After more than 10 years of doing business here in Ukraine, I have managed to find qualified and devoted employees and business partners and we have developed trusting relationships that I can count on. As a professional team with a common vision, we are always looking for the most efficient solutions for our clients and to make sure we implement the best of our experience in every single case. Lviv Today: Can you give your overview on the general legal and business development changes in Ukraine over the past 10 years? There have been many positive changes in legislation over the last 10 years. Many permit and licensing procedures were simplified, there were noticeable changes in Tax & Customs legislation, a number of anti-corruption laws were adopted, and probably the most significant change was the signature of the Association Agreement between the European Union and Ukraine. Of course, these changes can’t be perfect right away and I believe that Ukraine has to make its way just like any other European country has. Now in the process of harmonization of Ukrainian legislation with EU norms, the Ukrainian business community will face lots of challenges associated with investments into the development and modernization of their production facilities in order to enhance the competitiveness of the businesses. But speaking from the experiences of other European countries, the process is going to be worth it.

Anders Johansen Founder of J & L Сonsulting Lviv Today: What is the difference between doing business in Ukraine and Denmark? What would you suggest Ukrainian businessmen should implement? First of all, Denmark has been a member of the EU since 1972, so we have been used to working in a global market where competition grows year after year and you need to be innovative and competitive to survive. We have had much more time to adopt fair laws and fight corruption. Ukraine is still on its way, but I believe that the experience that the Danish community brought to Lviv, such as Danish technologies and innovation, are used more and more extensively. From what I’ve learned in my personal experience, we’ve been helping Ukrainian companies to implement innovative Danish technologies in startups and support successful businesses in their continued growth. A good example is agribusiness, especially improvements in pig farming (Danish pig farming is considered to be the best in Europe). Lviv Today: What is your personal attitude to Ukrainians as a nation? I have great expectations for the younger generation that is moving the country forward and making visible changes in the economic development of the country by triggering new initiatives, promoting pro-European vision, and promoting transparency in doing and establishing business in Ukraine. The revolution that recently took place is a clear example of it. People are finally opening their eyes, changing their mentality, getting new experience, and implementing it in their own companies, communities, organizations, and families. This is what I call the evolution of the nation. Lviv Today: What is your forecast for the investment climate in Ukraine/ Western Ukraine in particular? I hope the next 6 months will show that the new government is ready to make the needed reforms and fight corruption. The legislative system transparency will positively impact the inflow of European investment and bring the know-how to the country. The harmonization of Ukrainian legislation with EU norms will open opportunities for Ukrainian goods and services to become competitive and enter new markets – namely European markets that will promote economic development. I clearly feel that Ukraine is willing to move forward and I truly believe that the new government will make everything possible to implement all the necessary reforms for the further growth and development of the country. he Ukrainian National Museum in Chicago, USA hosted their annual Banquet & Fashion Show on September 28th, featuring prominent Leopolitan designer Oksana Karavanska’s ‘Vyshyvanka Couture’ collection of embroidered outfits. Lviv’s Karavanska has been one of the biggest names in Ukrainian fashion for over a decade after starring on the country’s most popular fashion TV show. Her collection fuses traditional Ukrainian vyshyvanky (embroidered shirts) with elements of high fashion that are designed for women of sophistication, confidence, and independence. As a prominent and highly sought-after Ukrainian designer, Karavanska utilizes a mix of soft, lightweight materials – such as silk, chiffon, and lace – to compliment the intricately embroidered details of her lavish garments. In addition to trendy ethnic folklore that has become a staple of contemporary Ukrainian fashion, the collection showcases glimpses of Ukrainian history, culture, and art from around the country. The event was a wonderful success and was warmly received by the over 400 guests. Karavanska’s show premiered the extensive ‘Stylish Century of Noble Clothes’ ethno-exhibition that opened at the Ukrainian National Museum in Chicago on October 3rd.

EBA General Meeting with Valeria Gontareva, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine On September 10 2014, the European Business Association held a meeting with the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine,Valeria Gontareva. The event gathered together representatives of business to talk on the importance of stabilizing the country, as well as improving Ukraineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s currency issues. During the meeting, Valeria Gontareva pointed out that the National Bank of Ukraine aims to stabilize the situation in the interbank foreign exchange market. Overall the discussion was focused around the following questions: exchange rate fluctuation, foreign exchange markets and possible ways to return the exchange rate to a sustainable level. Therefore, the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine also said that currency fixation could be predicted in approximately 4 months. EBA Events EBA General Meeting with Anders Aslund The European Business Association met Swedish economist â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Anders Aslund â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who holds a particular interest in the economic transition from centrally planned to market economies. Mr. Aslund served as an economic adviser to the governments of several post-Soviet countries and from 2003 was director of the Russian and Eurasian Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Moreover, Mr. Aslund was an advocate of early, comprehensive and radical economic reforms in Eastern Europe. During the Meeting all the attendees were able to join interactive open discussion with experienced expert in international relations and economics. In particular, the following issues were raised: the implementation of the economic part of the Association Agreement with the EU, educational reform in Ukraine, energy sector, the effectiveness of reforms' realisation and many other important questions. Mr Aslund describes Ukraine as a powerful country with huge potential, however, in modern conditions our country is not able to make out such improvements due to internal and external reasons. The meeting with outstanding economist was very informative as we discussed current economic situation in Ukraine as well as possible ways for overcoming the crisis as well as found out his evaluation of the Ukrainian economic and investment climate. Outdoor meeting of EBA Management Committee September 5th Outdoor meeting of EBA Management Committee was held at the Zablotskyy Clinic on "Recipes of successful business by Yaroslav Zablotskyy: from Ukrainian to European." The participant of the meeting could watch the clinic during the tour kindly guided by Yaroslav Zablotskyy. Mr. Zablotskyy presented the general overview of the clinic activities and specifics of the different department work. Also Mr. Zablotskyy told about the history and establishment of the clinic, and the future development plans of the business. After the tour the participants of the meeting actively discussed the above mentioned issues, asking questions to the speaker and hospitable owner of the clinic kindly answered questions, revealing his Recipes of successful business and sharing own experience. n this issue of Lviv Today Markian Malskyy, Partner of Arzinger law firm, Head of West Ukrainian Branch Office, attorney-at-law, PhD, is answering the following question: Introduction of additional mechanism to stabilize the monetary and foreign exchange markets in Ukraine.

National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has provided clarification regarding the practical application of certain requirements of the Regulation No. 540 "On Introduction of Additional Measures for Stabilization of Ukrainian Monetary and Foreign Currency Markets". In particular, the National Bank of Ukraine stressed that the Regulation envisages measures aimed at increasing control, namely concerning import transactions of residents without importing goods on the territory of Ukraine. For instance, Regulation prohibits transactions in foreign currency on settlements regarding import transactions without the importation of goods on the territory of Ukraine. However, the requirements of the above-mentioned provision do not apply to the performance of settlements with non-residents regarding payment for the following operations: • tourism, transport and communication services to the residents if they have the appropriate licenses; • transport services by residents-forwarders; • own obligations by banks relating to the payment of funds to correspondent banks, international communication systems, including the following news agencies REUTERS, SWIFT, BLOOMBERG, for the use of their services; • own liabilities of banks - members of the international payment systems related to the organization and provision of settlements using these payment systems. Moreover, the Regulation establishes additional restrictions on cash and currency circulation. Firstly, it prohibits repayment of foreign currency credits, loans (including financial assistance) under agreements with non-residents before the term, stipulated by the contract. Thereby NBU does not register amendments to agreements on engagement by the residents-borrowers of credits, foreign currency loans from non-residents, related to reduction of obligations deadlines under such contracts or their early implementation for the residents-borrowers. Secondly, there are restrictions on cash withdrawal in national currency during a single day to a single client in the amount which exceed 150,000 UAH. Other aspect is that issue of savings (deposit) certificates is suspended. Cash withdrawals within Ukraine by electronic means of payment emitted by both residents and nonresidents should be carried out exclusively in UAH. The Regulation No. 540 has entered into force on September 2 and is valid until December 2, 2014, inclusive.

The Ukrainian girls are an emerging squad at the European level, increasing quality and improving results every year. The squad finished second in Group 6 qualifying and looks ready to compete with any side. The four best 2nd-place squads in European qualifying are attempting to take UEFA’s eighth and final spot in next summer’s World Cup in Canada alongside the group winners.

Cycling Championship of Ukraine Lviv’s SKA cycling track was home to the Championship of Ukraine from September 17th–21st. Over 120 athletes from across Ukraine took part in the competition, including those from Luhansk and Donetsk regions. Lviv can claim two champions among their own as Leopolitan cyclists Tetyana Klymchenko and Roman Gladysh took gold in their respective competitions. Other winners include: Olena Demidova (Kirovohrad-Luhansk), Inna Metalnikova (Kyiv-Luhansk), Dmytro Ponomarenko (Mykolaiv), and Vladyslav Kreminskyi (Vynnytsya).

Summer Biathlon Championships The Tysovets training base in the Lviv Region was host to the Ukraine Open Summer Biathlon Championship from September 15th-16th. Summer biathlon, which combines cross-country running with rifle shooting, comes in two formats – both featured at the championships – in Sprint and Pursuit. The event featured two Ukrainian Olympic champions, both Julia Dzhyma and Valentina Semerenko were bested by Olga Abramova in both formats. Twotime Ukrainian Champion Serhiy Semenov won both disciplines on the men’s side.

На львівському велотреку СКА 17–21 вересня 2014 р. відбувся чемпіонат України з велоперегонів на треку. У змаганнях взяли участь понад 120 спортсменів з різних куточків України, в тому числі й з Луганської та Донецької областей. Головним суддею чемпіонату був Володимир Набойщіков. Переможцями серед жінок стали – Тетяна Климченко (Львівська обл.), Олена Демидова (Кіровоград-Луганськ), Інна Метальникова (Київ-Луганськ), а серед чоловіків – Роман Гладиш (Львівська обл.), Дмитро Пономаренко (Миколаївська обл.) і Владислав Кремінський (Винницька обл.).

На тренувальній базі Тисовець, що за 32 км від м. Сколе Львівської обл., 15–16 вересня 2014 р. відбувся відкритий чемпіонат України з літнього біатлону. Літній біатлон, що поєднує в собі біг по пересіченій місцевості зі стрільбою з малокаліберної гвинтівки, був проведений у двох форматах – спринт і переслідування. Переможцями змагань стали Ольга Абрамова, яка виграла і в спринті, і в переслідуванні, перемігши двох олімпійських медалісток – Юлію Джиму і Валентину Семеренко. Також дворазовим чемпіоном України став Сергій Семенов, який також переміг у обох дисциплінах.

Usyk Stops Brewer in Seven Arena Lviv was the site of the highly anticipated domestic grudge-match between Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Bruwer for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WB) Intercontinental Heavyweight title on October 4th. The 2012 London Olympic heavyweight champion Usyk passed the first meaningful test of his still young professional career with flying colours, stopping the durable South African cruiserweight champion “Billy the Kid” Bruwer (24-6-1, 21 KOs) in seven one-sided rounds. The Ukrainian power-hitter is now 5-0 (5 KOs) and can call himself the WBO Intercontinental champion. He is expected to enter the WBO ranks in search of a greater challenge. Promoted by K2 Promotions, the event was televised on Inter and also featured former European and WBA light welterweight champion Andriy Kotelnyk (32-4-1, 13 KOs) in his swan song fight. One of the top Ukrainian fighters over the years, Kotelnyk ended his career in style with a win at home by outpointing Georgian journeyman Alexander Benidze (13-15-1, 6 KOs) over eight rounds with an unanimous decision.

Champions & Europa League Action in Lviv Lviv is home to some premiere football action as both Shakhtar Donetsk and Metalist Kharkiv are calling the city home for their respective Champions League and Europa League championship pursuits. In their first home action at the group stage of the Champions League, Shakhtar looked to be cruising after Luiz Adrian potted an insurance marker to make 2-0 in the 85’. However, an 89’ penalty and injury-time goal brought the visiting Porto (Portugal) side even, robbing Shakhtar of two valuable points. After a 0-0 draw in Spain against Athletico Bilbao, Shakhtar currently sits in 3rd with 2 points. The team will travel to Belarus to play BATE Borisov in October before returning to host the Belarussian squad on November 5th at Arena Lviv. Metalist Kharkiv fared no better in the late stages of their Group L Europa League match against Trabzonspor, conceding a secondhalf injury-time marker to fall 2-1 to the Turkish squad. A 61’ strike by Volodomyr Homenyuk (aka “The Wayne Rooney of Crimea”) looked to have equalled the match for the home side before the deflating injury-time goal. After falling 0-1 to Belgium’s Lokeren, Metalist is winless after two games. Metalist next hosts Poland’s Legia Warszawa at Arena Lviv on October 23rd.

Матчі Ліги чемпіонів і Ліги Європи у Львові В нашому місті відбулись два міжнародні футбольні поєдинки – в рамках Ліги чемпіонів – 30 вересня «Шахтар» Донецьк з «Порту» (Португалія) і в рамках Ліги Європи - 18 вересня «Металіст» Харків з «Трабзонспор» (Туреччина). У матчі з португальцями донеччани вели перед 2:0 майже до кінця гри, але штрафний удар у ворота «Шахтаря» реалізували гості, а потім, у доданому часі – ще один гол звів рахунок до нічиєї 2:2. Після нічиєї 0:0 в Іспанії проти «Атлетико» Більбао, «Шахтар» сьогодні займає третє місце у своїй підгрупі з 2 очками. Команда вирушить до Білорусі, щоб грати з командою «БАТЕ» в жовтні, а 5 листопада на «Арені Львів» прийматиме білорусів у себе. У «Металіста» справи не набагато кращі – в другій половині доданого часу «Трабзонспор» переміг 2:1. Коли на 61 хвилині Володимир Гоменюк (на прізвисько «кримський Уейн Руні») зрівняв рахунок, здавалось, усе ще могло вийти на краще, але все сталось, як сталось. Після програшу 0:1 в Бельгії проти команди «Локерен», ситуація в «Металіста» після двох ігор досить сумна. Lviv’s FC Karpaty is having a rough season as the team struggles to put together results with any consistency. Their October calendar got off to a poor start after a lifeless 0-2 result in Poltava against Vorskla. The boys in greenand-white seemed to be content with a draw before conceding two markers in the final 10 minutes. Their September 21st match versus Metalist Kharkiv was a much more entertaining affair as the two squads combined for 6 goals in a seesaw battle at Stadium Ukraina. After Metalist jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, strikes by Oleg Golodiuk and Denys Kozhanov levelled the match before half. The game had a wild finish, with Karpaty defender Gregor Balazic scoring a 94’ extra-time goal to delight the fans and level the match after an early second-half strike by Metalist. The team followed this effort up with a grim 0-1 loss to Donetsk’s Olimpik. Karpaty currently sits in 13th-place in the 14 team league and will be looking to string together some points to distance themselves from last-place Illichivets.

У Карпатах ходить осінь… У Львівського ФК «Карпати» видався нелегкий сезон з не надто втішними результатами. Перша гра жовтня проти полтавської «Ворскли» пройшла досить таки мляво і завершилась з результатом 0:2. Здавалося, зелено-білі вдоволяться нічиєю, але долю матчу вирішили останні 10 хвилин не на їх користь. Зустріч 21 вересня з ФК «Металіст» Харків була набагато цікавішою – обидві команди спромоглися забити разом 6 голів на стадіоні «Україна». «Металіст» відразу захопив ініціативу і повів перед – 2:0; удари Олега Голодюка і Дениса Кожанова вирівняли рахунок до завершення першої половини. Гра завершилась у шаленому темпі, коли захисник «Карпат» Грегор Балажіч забив останній гол на 94 хвилині додаткового часу, від чого вболівальники були в захваті. Невдача спіткала львів’ян 3 жовтня у поєдинку з донецьким «Олімпіком» 0:1. Сьогодні «Карпати» посідають сумне 13 місце серед 14 команд ліги і повинні докласти максимум зусиль, щоб збільшити розрив від «Іллічівця», що займає останнє місце.
