Will the Lviv Mayor

Step Down From Verkhovna Rada? Ukrainians are getting pretty used to having elections. Consider this – this month’s local elections will be the third in just the last 17 months. It’s as if Ukraine has an electionindustrial complex; that the easiest form of job creation is creating jobs for new governments. Except the problem is that it is the same people get elected to more than one position. The country is dotted with politicians that seem to be “double-dipping” by holding two separate offices at the same time. For example, when Vladimir Klitschko became Mayor of Kyiv, he was head of the UDAR (Punch) Party. Gennadiy Trukhanov, the Mayor of Odesa, was elected to the federal parliament before running for city council. Examples like this can be found right around the country, including right here in Lviv. Indeed, being a federal parliamentarian is far from being considered a detriment to local duties, it seems to be a requirement. The current mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyy, has come under criticism for leading the national Samopomich (Self Reliance) Party. Critics accuse him of being too busy with his federal duties to concentrate effectively on his local ones. Whether this is true or not, he declined to take a seat in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) when his party finished 3rd in last year’s elections in order to

focus on local issues. While Sadovyy may have declined his seat, many that are challenging him are current members of parliament. Of the 10 challengers, 5 current members of the Verkhovna Rada and one was until he was defeated last year: • Dmitriy Dobrodomov – Poroshenko Bloc (but running for People’s Control) • Oksana Yurynets – Poroshenko Bloc • Ihor Vasyunek – Popular Front • Victor Halasyuk – Radical Party • Ruslan Koshulynskyy – Svoboda (and Lviv City Council) • Oleh Balyash – Formerly Party of Regions That leaves just 3 candidates without a significant time commitment conflict with their national duties (Volodomyr Hirnyak, Oksana Zholnovych, Ihor Zinkevych). This situation – having the same representative for both local and national issues – is unheard of in the West and unfair to Ukrainian citizens. Imagine your mayor having to advocate for a local issue that is against their federal party’s position. What would s/he do? Which political role would take precedence? While this issue is by no means unique to Lviv, it would be interesting to hear if those candidates will step down from their federal duties if elected mayor, or how they plan to manage their conflicting roles. Stepping away to concentrate on local issues would be the right thing to do for Leopolitans. Lee Reaney

This Month In Lviv Spring Summer 2016 October 29 – November 1 The Spring/Summer 2016 edition of Lviv Fashion Week is set to roll its red carpet into town from October 29 – November 1. This glamourous event will once again be hosted at the Danylo Halytskyi International Airport as well as at locations throughout the city – Astoria Hotel, George Hotel, Leopolis Hall, and the Under the Arsenal market. The event will feature some of Ukraine’s most renowned designers, including: Roksolana Bogutska, Oksana Mukha, NovaNa Studio, Mykytyuk&Yatsentyuk, Kateryna Karol, Lesia Semi, Uliana Nedoshytko, Steblakizm (Lviv); IDoL, Cher-nika (Kyiv); KEKA, Godis, Osipov (Odessa); GraNat by Natalia Grechana (Mykolaiv). As special guests will come designer Natasha TSU RAN (Belarus) with latest collection and Alicja Czarniecka (Poland) who will present collection for brand SAX35TH. Once again, the LFW programme will feature the SABOTAGE Young Designers Contest, where 10 finalists from across Ukraine and Belarus will compete. The International Contest of Fashion Designers is partnering with the event and will award the winner with qualification to Poland’s Zlota Nitka (The Golden Thread) competition finals. Lviv Fashion Week is set to kick off with the presentation of Lesia Semi’s newest perfume, which will take place on October 28th at the Astoria Hotel. The presentation of Zenovia Tkanko’s new book ‘Fashion in Ukraine of the 20th-Century’ will take place as part of the festivities, as well as a lecture by noted fashion critic Zoya Zvynyatskivska. Visitors to the showroom from October 31 – November 1 at the Danylo Halytskyi International Airport will have the opportunity to browse stylish clothes, bags, shoes, and other fashion accessories which will be on sale. Star-Studded Cast for №13 or All-Inclusive November 16th, 19:00 at the Mariya Zankovetska Drama Theatre (1 L. Ukrainka St.) On November 16th, Lviv’s Zankovetska National Theatre is pleased to host the №13 or All-Inclusive performance, based on the 1990 farce Out of Order written by English playwright Ray Cooney. As with many other Cooney plays, it features a lead actor (in this case a junior UK Minister) who has to lie his way out of an embarrassing situation (in this case a planned affair with a secretary) with the help of an innocent sidekick (in this case the Minister’s personal secretary). The sidekick gets more and more embroiled in the increasingly tangled tale as events unfold. The action takes place in a suite in a posh London hotel and revolves around accidents caused by a defective sash window. The starstudded cast features People’s Artist of Ukraine and beloved movie star Vladimir Goryansky, famous film star Alexey Vertinsky, Ukraine’s Merited actress Larisa Rusnak, TV hostess Snezhana Egorova, TV presenter Liliya Rebrik, and other talented actors. Nina Matvienko – Ukraine, The Soul November 7th, 19:30 at the Mariya Zankovetska National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theatre (1 L. Virsky Ensemble in Concert October 20th, 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Ukraine’s iconic P. Virsky National Folk Dance Ensemble is bringing their spectacular talents to Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre on October 20th, in a special, festive concert dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the ensemble’s creator – Pavlo Virksy. Over the past 75 years, the ensemble has become a calling card of Ukrainian culture, having gained popularity and admirers in not only the folklore and modern choreography circles, but among the general public as well. "Discovering Paderewski" Festival November 5th–15th, Lviv Philharmonic Hall (7 Chaykovskogo St.) and Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) This unique festival, being held for the fourth time, showcases the exceptional nature of the creative Ignacy Jan Paderewski and highlights the value of his musical heritage. The festival aims to popularise and commemorate the joint Polish and Ukrainian heritage of the famed musician. The figure of Ignacy Jan Paderewski is closely associated with Lviv. An honourary citizen of the city, the virtuoso musician, legendary pianist, and famed composer was popular among the Leopolitan public of the time, who were fascinated by his artistic lifestyle. The festival kicks off on November 5th with a special opening ceremony and concert dedicated to Krzysztof Penderecki, which will see him honoured with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Lviv National Academy of Music. The premiere concert will also showcase last year's "From Paderweski to Penderecki" project, which highlights a few of the significant achievements of these two great composers with

similar-sounding names, but completely different artistic worlds. The festival remains a valuable promotion of Polish music over the last century. The festival's programme also includes a string of classical concerts featuring many renowned musicians, including: Polish maestro Krzysztof Penderecki, American pianist Adam Wodnicki, Polish conductor Andrzej Bauer, the Ukrainian quartet DAGADANA, and many others. The festival will also see the awards ceremony for the

Battle of the Orchestras October 22nd, 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Lviv’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre is pleased to host the intriguing Battle of the Orchestras concert on October 22nd, which will pit the Lviv Academic Youth Symphony Orchestra against Odesa’s worthy Hardy Orchestra. The Hardy Orchestra is familiar to Ukrainian music lovers for winning the first Battle of the Orchestras tour by defeating a group from Kharkiv. Known for its cutting-edge performances, the Hardy Orchestra always searches for new ways to vitalise presentation classical music in concert. Each of their concerts uncovers a renewed depth of meaning in the traditional orchestral repertoire for both musicians and audiences alike. The INSO-Lviv Academic Youth Symphony Orchestra

The Wonderful Musical World of Pianoboy November 13th, 19:00 at KINO Event Hall (2 Chornovola Ave.) Dmitriy Shurov is a sophisticated musician and composer. He knows exactly what he’s doing and where it will lead. Leopolitan movie fans are on the edge of their (theatre) seats, waiting with anticipation for the exciting selection of modern German films that will be presented as part of this year’s German Film Festival on October 22. The films will feature in Kyiv and other major Ukrainian cities for the first time, including at the Lviv Art Palace, and will feature some of the top German films of the last 12 months representing a variety of genres. Andrey Makarevich & Yiddish Jazz November 8th, 18:00, November 9th, 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Lviv’s grandiose Opera & Ballet Theatre is pleased to host two concerts by outspoken and iconic rock star Andrey Makarevich on November 8-9. The longtime leader of the legendary Russian rock group Mashina Vremeni (Time Machine) is bringing his new Yiddish Jazz programme to Lviv. Over the past year, Makarevich has gotten into trouble for speaking out against the annexation of Crimea. He even performed a concert in the Ukrainian city of Sviatohirsk (Svyatogorsk) to raise funds for refugee children from Donetsk. Russian nationalists loudly disapproved. A number of Makarevich’s concerts were then cancelled while others were broken up by activists who threw eggs and heckled him as a “traitor to the homeland”. It’s not just the cancellations – Mashina Vremeni is now in danger of breaking up due to internal disagreements over the Ukraine crisis. Drawing a parallel between Klezmer music, created by Jewish immigrants, and traditional big-band jazz, Makarevich will perform wellknown favourites in Yiddish, English, and Russian. He will be backed by a live band of internationally-renowned jazz musicians and vocalists including: Alexandr and Dmitriy Bril, Irina Rodiles, Eugeniy Boretz, and Polina Kasyanova. Spectacular Hiromi in Concert November 2nd, 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Lviv’s famed Opera & Ballet Theatre is pleased to announce that Japanese jazz composer and pianist Hiromi Uehara, known professionally as simply Hiromi, will appear in concert on November 2nd. She is known for her virtuosic technique, energetic live performances, and for blending together musical genres – including post-bop, progressive rock, classical, and fusion – in her compositions. Hiromi started learning classical piano at the age of five and was later introduced to jazz by her piano teacher Noriko Hikida. At 14, she played with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. When she was 17 she met Chick Corea by chance in Tokyo and was invited to play with him at his concert the next day. She then moved on to write jingles for a few years for Japanese companies such as Nissan and then enrolled to study at Boston’s Berkley College of Music. There, she was mentored by Ahmad Jamal and signed with influential jazz label Telarc before graduating. Since her debut in 2003, Hiromi has toured the world and appeared in numerous jazz festivals. She performed live at the

Newport Jazz Festival in 2009 and at the Paris Olympia in 2010. She toured with the Stanley Clarke Band in 2010 and performed at this summer’s Alfa Jazz Fest in Lviv. No other jazz pianist – contemporary or historical – sounds quite like Hiromi. And it’s not just because she mostly performs her own utterly unclassifiable compositions. sinuous manner. Champions League Action Returns to Lviv: Shakhtar vs. Malmo November 3rd, 21:45 at Arena Lviv (199 Stryiska St.) Shakhtar Donetsk will face off against Sweden’s Malmo in a Champions League group stage matchup on November 3rd, in a game that both will be looking to win after dropping opening round matchups to Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germaine. Both hope to keep within striking distance of the two powerhouses that top Group A and get a leg up in the race for a Europa Cup position that is awarded to the 3rd place finisher. The first flight will start from Istanbul on Sunday, October 25 at 23:10 arriving to Lviv on Monday at 1:10 am. Reverse flights begin on October 26, taking off from Lviv at 2:30 am and arriving to Istanbul Ataturk Airport at 04:40 am. In addition to night flights on Mondays, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday airliner will take off at 11:30 from Istanbul arriving to Lviv in two hours and departing from Lviv at 14:20, landing in Istanbul at 16:35.

Collections of aphorisms, sometimes known as wisdom literature, have a prominent place in the canons of many ancient societies. These collections also make up an important part of the work of some modern authors. The aphoristic genre developed together with literacy and, after the invention of printing, aphorisms – or short sayings embodying greater truths – were collected and published in book form. The first noted published collection is Adagia by Erasmus of Rotterdam. Two influential 20th-Century examples include Itch of Wisdom by Mikhail Turovsky and Unkempt Thoughts by Stanislaw Jerzy Lec.

Stanislaw Jerzy Lec was born in Lviv in 1909, and during trying periods throughout his life, he returned to the city several times. Lec had quite a life: he was involved in prewar political intrigue, was a soldier and a member of the underground movement during the wartime, taken prisoner and escaped from execution twice, immigrated to Israel, worked as a Polish cultural attache in Vienna, and became among the greatest writers in postwar Polish history. He is known for his lyrical poetry and skeptical philosophical-moral articles, often with a political subtext. But he is best known as the unrivaled master of paradoxes and aphorisms. His Unkempt Thoughts became folklore long ago and was repeated in various versions even without reference to the author. Intellect, lyricism, and even satire are at the roots of his aphorisms. Although the term

The Ukrainian Inventor of the X-Ray Puluj the Intellectual

When people speak about the origins of the x-ray, one man’s name usually comes to mind – German scientist Wilhelm Roentgen. Roentgen, of course, was the winner of the very first Nobel Prize for Physics for his work on the x-ray and has even had a periodic element named after him (Roentgenium – 111). What most are unaware of, however, is the contribution of Ukrainian physicist Ivan Puluj in the foundational discovery. In fact, it could be argued that Puluj himself was the original inventor of the groundbreaking medical technology. World history has never been just to certain individuals or certain nations. Small nations and their achievements are often neglected while the accomplishments of large nations are at times exaggerated. – Slavko Bokshan, Serbian scientist that worked with both Roentgen and Puluj

Ivan Puluj was a Ukrainian physicist, inventor, and patriot that was raised and educated in the village of Hrymayliv near Ternopil. His accomplishments – especially in the development of the x-ray – have been recognized throughout Ukraine, if not the rest of the world. Streets in Lviv, Kyiv, and many other Ukrainian cities have been named after him, as has the Ivan Puluj National Technical University in Ternopil. This month, on the 170th anniversary of the birth of one of Ukraine’s most prominent scientists, Lviv Today looks at the life and accomplishments of Ivan Puluj.

Ivan Pavlovich Puluj was born into a wealthy, well-educated, and deeply religious family in Austro-Hungarian Ukraine in February 1845. His father, in fact, even served as the town’s burgomaster (mayor) from 18611865. Ivan graduated with honours from the Ternopil gymnasium in 1864 and began his post-secondary education in theology/ philosophy at the prestigious Vienna University. He continued his academic work in investigating physical processes and phenomena and was awarded an Associate Professor Degree in Vienna. He spent over 30 years (until 1916) working as a Professor at the German Prague Polytechnic University, including stints as Rector and Dean of the Physical Faculty. But it was his contributions to the scientific community that earned him renown.

Puluj had even published his discoveries years earlier (1880-1883) in the Notes section of the Austrian Imperial Academy of Sciences. However, these weren’t given their due recognition of their influence on the discovery of the x-ray until years later when they were translated by the Great

The True Inventor of the X-Ray? Puluj focused much of his academic study on cathode rays, and published several papers on the topic starting from as early as 1880. The field of physics was an exciting place at that time and Puluj worked together with Roentgen in the same department at Strasbourg University under the guideance of the influential Professor Kundt. By this time, Puluj had already developed a series of experiments into the nature of “cold light”, including inventing an x-ray emitting device known as the Puluj Lamp to conduct those trials. Developed as early as 1881, this invention was the first foray into the groundbreaking world of x-rays and ended up being mass produced at the time. In fact, Roentgen was a frequent visitor to Puluj’s lectures and was even given a Puluj Lamp from Ivan Pavlovich himself. Indeed, it was Ivan Puluj who first demonstrated an xray photograph when he took a picture of his daughter’s hand with a pin lying under it. It wasn’t until a few years later that Roentgen would publicly repeat the same experiments and he would not, unfortunately, give the Ukrainian physicist any credit. By January 1896, both scientists would publish influential articles in the scientific journal World Illustration; Roentgen’s dealt with his ‘discovery’ of x-rays, while Puluj’s outlined a series of x-ray experiments he performed at the Prague Polytechnic Institute. Why then would Roentgen go on to get credit for the discovery of the x-ray? Puluj’s article (Luminous Electrical Matter and the Fourth

LVIV HISTORY Britain Royal Society and recognized as one of the greatest achievements in the modern world of science. Even though Puluj was the first to understand, publish, and conduct experiments on the x-ray, it was Roentgen that would receive the credit and – in a controversial move at the time – the first ever Nobel Prize for Physics (1901). Puluj: Professor, Patron, and True Patriot Puluj is notable for several other important reasons, including discoveries, inventions, and contributions to Ukraine. He is particularly noteworthy for the invention of a device that determines the mechanical equivalent of heat that he first exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878. Even though his scientific notoriety usually kept him busy in what is now Central Europe – he

frequently lectured at universities and participated in opening power plants throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire – his true love was Ukraine. He actively supported the opening of a Ukrainian university in Lviv and frequently published articles to support the Ukrainian language. He is famous for his activities towards protecting the rights and political freedoms of the Ukrainian people through his incredible organizational, cultural, and educational work. He created a scholarship fund for Ukrainian students to study abroad, supported Ukrainian refugees over the course of World War I, and even helped complete a translation of the bible into Ukrainian. This groundbreaking scientist, wonderful humanitarian, and true Ukrainian patriot died in 1918 in Prague and is still buried there. Only recently have his contributions to the discovery of the x-ray become more

accepted internationally. This rise in popularity brings to mind the words of one of his colleagues, Ukrainian writer Panteleymon Kulish: “Not only Ukraine, but the whole world, will shortly talk about the man who enlightened science and spirituality with reason.” His inventions and scientific study are a great legacy to world science. Ivan Puluj now rightfully takes his place among the list of outstanding figures of Ukrainian culture. To commemorate the 170th anniversary of Puluj’s birthday, events will be staged across Ukraine. His homes of Hrymayliv and Ternopil, as well as Kyiv and right here in Lviv, are all set to host special events. While the international community has still to recognize his contributions to the development of one of medical science’s most important tools, Ukrainians know just how integral one of their own was to this groundbreaking achievement.

Publishers' Forum Publishers and authors flocked to Lviv in mid-September for the 22nd annual Publishers’ Forum; an extraordinary literature market and festival. Founded in 1994, it brings together not only writers, readers, and publishers, but also celebrities, athletes, famous politicians, journalists, educators, and NGOs. It is a great place to check out the newest publishers and to locate that scarce edition you’ve been searching for. With over 900 publishing houses and over 300 authors presenting their books in the scenic Lviv Palace of Culture, its yard, and in the city centre, it offered a great opportunity for young publishers. Forum was attended by publishers from Zimbabwe, Egypt, China, Belarus, Estonia, Brazil, Latvia, Israel, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Serbia, Finland. After being banned last year, Russian publishers were welcomed back and France was featured as a special guest

LVIV SOCIETY this year. Some of the main themes of the event include: women’s issues, culinary, historical truth, men’s club, children’s playground, and school. Leopolitans and guests of the city had the opportunity to sit in on author’s readings, lectures, workshops, and discussion clubs. One of the most anticipated releases of the event was Strong Name Nadiya, penned in a Russian prison by Ukrainian military pilot Nadiya Savchenko. Savchenko was abducted and has been illegally held in Russia since 2014. Her sister, Vira Savchenko, was on hand to present the book. Also in attendance was Ukrainian First Lady Maryna Poroshenko and her children. The presidential family participated in the presentation of a triptych from the library of the Day newspaper. They also took time to check out the book fair and joined in at the Children’s Forum. The family of the President bought dozens of books written by modern authors.

Coffee Festival Perks Up Lviv Lviv, central Europe’s coffee capital, was home to the ninth annual Coffee Festival from September 24-27. The festival marked one of the most important events of the year for Lviv’s coffeehouses, who compete to impress Leopolitans and guests of the city with their unique themes, architecture, and blends. The festival also featured a grand entertainment program that included events like the Bike Coffee Mile, Cinema Coffee Nights, the KavaExpo Coffee Fair and much more. As has become a custom, Leopolitans and guests of the city voted for their favourite “Coffeehouse of the Year”. Several of the city’s finest cafés were awarded with coveted titles that

they can carry around all year. Svit Kavy took home top honours as the Best Coffeehouse 2015, Atlas, which features an exquisite 17th-Centure interior, won the Coffee with History award, and Pid Klepsidrovu, famed across Central Europe for its sumptuous desserts, walked away with the Something Sweet with Coffee title. Young Leopolitans Take Rescuer's Oath September 17th was a special day for dozens of Lviv’s finest, as first year cadets at Lviv State University of Life Safety took their oaths to serve Ukrainian people. The Lviv State University of Life Safety is a leading higher educational institution in Ukraine in the field of human safety. The university provides professional training for the Ukrainian State Service for Emergency Situations, as well as other ministries, authorities, and private organisations that deal with safety in all spheres. Mykhaylo Kozyar, the Rector of Lviv State University of Life Safety, asked all attendees at the ceremony to commemorate the Heavenly Hundred – the heroes of the Euromaidan revolution – as well as all ATO soldiers that have died while defending Ukraine, with a moment of silence. Lviv mayor Andriy Sadovyi was also in attendance and made a speech to the first year cadets. After the ceremony was over, a special concert was held by the university’s orchestra and dance group. Later in the day, cadets from the university hosted an “Open Doors Day”, where they showed the public some of the skills they’ve learned, such as fire extinguishing and resident evacuation.

NATO Secretary General Visits Lviv NATO Secretary-General, Mr. Jens Stoltenberg, made his first visit to Ukraine on September 21st, when he met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Lviv to help inaugurate the International Centre for Peacemaking and Security joint disaster response drill. Poroshenko hailed the exercise as more evidence of the “enhancement of our special partnership with NATO.” NATO has expressed firm support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia;

however member states of the alliance – including the USA – have declined repeated requests for offensive weapons. The drill, in which 1,100 rescuers from 34 countries participated, was designed to test the authorities’ capacity to respond to a mine explosion and collapse and the resulting earth tremors. During the twoday visit, Stoltenberg also held talks with Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

The event was presented by popular TV hostess Snezhana Egorova and featured musical performances by Pavlo Tabakov, Iryna Dolya, and Igor Volkov. Other highlights were a dance show by the Zhyttya ballet and the Couture de Fleur fashion exhibition by artist and designer Olena Onufriv.

Lviv-born Natalya Buksa went into the Russian town of Khanty-Mansiisk and defeated Russian player Alina Bivol by half a point to claim the Youth World Chess Championship. Zhansaya Abdumalik from Kazakhstan claimed bronze. Ukraine recently also saw success at the European Women’s Chess Championship In Georgia, where Natalya Zhukova was able to handle the stiff competition to claim victory. Earlier this year, Ukraine’s Mariya Muzychuk defeated Russian grandmaster Natalija Pogonina 2:1 to make the 22-year-old from Lviv Region the new Women’s World Champion. Львів'янка Олени Черняк вперше підкорила дистанцію

The Ironman Triathlon is a grueling World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) that consisting of a 3.86 km swim, a 180.25 km bike race, and a 42.2 km run – without a break. It is widely considered to be among the most difficult athletic competitions in the world. The name “Ironman Triathlon” comes from the original race that is now known as the Ironman World Championship. It has been held in Hawaii since 1978 and is preceded by several qualifying events. The Ironman Championships have become known for their grueling length and harsh race conditions. Today, there are over two dozen Ironman Triathlon races throughout the world that act as qualification for the World Championship. Professional athletes qualify through a point ranking system, while amateur athletes qualify by receiving allocated spots according to each age group’s top finishers at an event. One such race this season was hosted in the picturesque Mediterranean village of Calella in Spain’s Barcelona-Maresme region on October 4th. Lviv’s-own Olena Chernyak was one of the courageous athletes to attempt that ambitious challenge. The lone Ukrainian representative in the women’s 3034 age category, the first time participant finished in the Top 25. Lviv Today would like to acknowledge Olena on her amazing achievement.

Тож недарма ці змагання вважаються одними з найскладніших у світі, позаяк вони завжди відбуваються у надзвичайно важких умовах. Такі змагання, тепер відомі як Ironman World Championship, проходили на Гаваях ще з 1978 року і мають кілька відбіркових турів. Сьогодні існує понад два десятки змагань з тріатлону по всьому світу, які служать кваліфікаційним відбором на Чемпіонат світу. Для професійних спортсменів існує рейтингова система, а для спортсменів-аматорів кваліфікація відбувається за результатами в кожній віковій групі. В цьому сезоні такі змагання пройшли у мальовничій середземноморській місцевості Калелья іспанської округи Барселона-Маресме 4 жовтня. Львів’янка Олена Черняк була однією з тих, хто вийшли на старт цих нелегких змагань. Вона була єдиною представницею України в жіночій віковій категорії 30-34 років, і, виступаючи вперше, увійшла у ТОП-25. Lviv Today вітає Олену з її досягненням у спорті "Залізних чоловіків"!

The Ukrainian champions were outclassed early on by the #8th-ranked club in the world and fell behind early on goals by Serge Aurier and David Luiz inside of 25’. Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic added insult to injury when he added an injury-time marker to complete the rout. The defeat followed an opening match 0:4 demolition by Spain’s #1-ranked Real Madrid. “Now we have to fight for 3rd place in the group”, conceded Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu after the loss, “because no matter how well we play we will not match Madrid and Paris this season.” Shakhtar will next host Sweden’s Malmo right here in Lviv on November 3rd.

Ці змагання відрізняються від багатьох інших тим, що участь у них може взяти кожен, кому виповнилось 18 років і змагатись на дистанції можуть любителі з членами бігових клубів і навіть з діючими чемпіонами України. Традиційно, забіги проводяться на вулицях великих міст; у Львові було вибрано для цього проспект Чорновола, а дистанцію поділили на два кола по 5 км. Переможцями змагань стали Юлія Ігнатова з Миколаївської області та Сергій Лебідь з Київської області, бігун на довгі дистанції, який вже дев'ять разів вигравав чемпіонат Європи з кросу.

EBA Business Forecast 2016 The European Business Association collected prognoses from the CEOs of its member-companies related to the economic situation in Ukraine. In August and September 2015 directors of EBA member companies shared their own forecasts and plans for the future in the framework of EBA Business Forecast 2016 case study. We would like to present to you the generalized expectations of 95 CEOs on trends in their own business and in the general economic situation in the next year. The majority of respondents represents the service sector (61% including FMCG companies, preferably imported products) and the rest – industry (31%), construction (5%), agriculture (2%) and other sectors (1%).

• The fight against corruption must be a priority of the government according to the opinion of 86% of managers; • The majority of managers (52.6%) are not going to change the number of employees, 28.4% are going to increase the number of employees and 18.9% plan to reduce staff; • 93% of executives predict a rise in wages of existing employees; • Almost all the leaders – 95% expect a weakening of the hryvnia against the US dollar in 2016. • Average exchange expected rate is 24.8 UAH / USD., which is close to the forecasts of the Ministry of Finance.

EBA MEETING with the Head of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine in Lviv region On September, 14 Regional Coordination Council and Ihor Pikhurko, the Head of Tax&Accounting Committee of EBA Western Ukrainian Office met Igor Kondro, the Head of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine in Lviv region and his deputy Vasily Kresyak. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss specific steps to support foreign and domestic investors and to develop healthy business environment in Lviv region. "State Fiscal Service is interested in improving the investment climate, – assured the Head of State Fiscal Service (SFS) in Lviv region. During the meeting Markiyan Malskyy, the Chairman of the Regional Coordination Council of the Association in Western Ukraine assured that the Association continues its

active work in improving the investment climate and will gladly share its experience within the cooperation with Fiscal Service. Also Regional Coordination Council highlighted the particular cases faced by the EBA members in order to discuss the ways of their solutions. Participants mutually decided to continue the activities on the bases of Emergency Working Group on operational review of foreign investors’ applications and proposals. Joint action of SFS in Lviv and EBA Western Ukrainian office must ensure a significant contribution to the economy, and as a result – to convince investors that Ukraine and Lviv region in particular are attractive for investment. At the same time, as we know there were certain limitations on changing of the party to the loan with nonresident imposed in the end of August. Will they apply to our situation and how should we arrange a deal?

Mr. Zozulya mentioned that together with his team he would like to realize such projects as creating the patrol on bicycles, buying electro cars, using special CRM for the daily patrols operations, improving the English level of patrol officers etc. We would like to thank to Yuriy Zozulya and to the participants for such friendly and active discussion.

As you already know the loans obtained from non-residents by residents in foreign currency are subjects to obligatory registration in the National Bank of Ukraine (hereinafter – NBU) in a accordance with the Resolution of the NBU No. 270 dated 17 June 2004 “On the procedure of obtaining by residents of credits and loans in foreign currency from non-residents and provision loans in foreign currency by residents to non-residents”. Pursuant to its provisions amendments to such agreements, including changes on the substitute of the debtor/creditor or currency of the loan shall also be registered in the NBU. At the same time, on August 20, 2015 the National Bank of Ukraine (hereinafter – NBU) adopted the Resolution No. 551 “On Amending the Resolution of the National Bank of Ukraine dated of 03.06.2015 No 354” (hereinafter – Resolution No. 551) imposing a ban for registering the amendments to the loan agreements with nonresidents concerning change of the party to the contract. In particular, according to the named Resolution No. 551 the NBU will not be any longer registering amendments to the loan agreements with non-residents in foreign currency which are related to the change of creditor and/or debtor or assignment the rights under such agreement. Although, the NBU can make a decision on the registration of the agreements (amendments to the agreements) even in mentioned cases upon a separate decision and on condition that the debtor and creditor in such agreement are members to one group. But in case described above your company most of all will not have to apply for registration of these changes to the NBU, as when you substitute foreign creditor to a Ukrainian party and have no further need to perform repayment of loan abroad in foreign currency – such loan falls out the regulation of provisions of Resolution of the NBU No. 270. Therefore in case the amendments to the loan agreement on change of the creditor apply to all debt and all creditors’ rights are transferred to a new creditor – registration shall be just annulled under the provisions of p.2.11 of the mentioned Resolution. In case the creditor transfers the debt to a new creditor only partially and there will be further payments according to the loan agreement – those amendments shall be registered in the NBU by a debtor. In such case you might try to apply for a separate decision of the NBU despite the prohibition.

EBA Events EBA Master Class with Nataliya Pysarenko On September, 15 Master Class with Nataliya Pysarenko, MBA Professor at the International Institute of Business, “Changing world, Changing Business. Marketing strategies” took place at the Leopolis Hall. The master class was organized in a partnership with International Institute of Business. The participants of the meeting received valuable and useful information about marketing trends of our fast changing world. Nataliya Pysarenko gave a lot of examples on how different companies, in particular European, adjust their marketing strategies to these trends and local realities. She also mentioned that despite of widely spread tendency of “going online” it is better to mix online and offline activities because the majority of customers like to touch and then buy where it is more profitably. EBA HR Breakfast with Nataliya Romanenko On Septembers, 7 the EBA HR Breakfast with Nataliya Romanenko, the President of European Coaching Federation in Ukraine took place at the EBA office in Lviv. The main topic of the meeting was leadership in a coaching style. Nataliya told participants more about DISC and gave clear understanding what coaching is and how to use it properly. ain diminishes life quality and is the main reason why most of the people visit doctors. There is a great deal of responsibility laid on the medical staff as they have to interpret correctly manifestations of a disease in order to define character of health problem and ways of its treatment. “Center of physical rehabilitation “Innovo” (translated from Latin as “renovation”) was founded in 2009. In 2014 the center received medical license and started providing services as “Physical therapy and pain management center” in both children’s and grown-ups departments. The main goal of the center is to contribute to the improvement of people’s life quality and physical condition.
