What an achievement! O
ur 100th issue. In print media. In Ukraine. It’s quite an achievement – no matter how you look at it. When Lviv Today was launched 100 months ago, internet was just coalescing into its modern form. Staple sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Google News were in their infancy. Newspapers and print magazines were still years away from their swan songs. And Ukraine was withering somewhere between the failed promise of the Orange Revolution and the wide-eyed wonder that came along with EURO 2012. It was summer 2008 and scrappy little Lviv Today shook the Western Ukrainian media market by becoming its first Englishlanguage journal. Our first issue featured a beautiful blonde model on the cover, an interview inside with Ruslana – one of Lviv’s most famous modern residents – and beautiful spreads of sports, fashion, and concerts on every page. Some things stay the same. The model worked then, and thanks to you, it still works today – 100 issues later!
The death of print media They say that “video killed the radio star”, but that’s just not as accurate as saying that ‘internet killed the print newspaper’. Since Lviv Today launched in 2008, some of the world’s most prominent newspapers and journals have stopped going to print – from National Geographic to Newsweek to UK’s The Independent (just last month). Kyiv’s lifestyle magazine – known as What’s On Kyiv – also ceased operations in late 2013. Throughout all of that turmoil, Lviv Today has never failed to miss a beat, this issue marking the 100th successive issue since our launch. We’ve been there for the highs – like when Karpaty FC qualified for the 2011 Europa League or when the city hosted Europe during EURO 2012. But we’ve also been

around for the lows, like when the Yanukovych government had protesters shot or when Ukraine’s economy plummeted due to ongoing war. And while the deflation took a serious bite out of the magazine’s advertising budget – and the staff’s salaries – the dedication of the extraordinary people at Lviv Today has made sure that you, our wonderful readers, have something new to read each month.
Long live local print journalism! Is there a better place in Ukraine to do print journalism? In Europe? In the world? Lviv is a vibrant city, with plenty of cafes, restaurants, and events to keep even the busiest Leopolitans entertained. We’ve watched some of the city’s festivals – like Alfa Jazz Fest and Lviv Coffee Fest – grow into legitimately world-class events. We’ve seen Lviv’s UNESCO-recognised central square slowly transform back into the grandeur of old. And we’ve witnessed a new generation of Leopolitans take the mantle of protecting the city’s role as “the soul of Ukraine”. And we’ve had a blast doing it. We couldn’t have done it without you! MONTH IN LVIV LVIV CITY DAY May 6–7 in Central Lviv Where can you feel alive, exhilarated, and entertained all at the same time? Why, only in Lviv – and especially during the Lviv City Day celebrations! The heart of Western Ukraine comes alive at the beginning of May each year as Lviv comes to life to celebrate its City Day. With a diverse and exciting range of events and activities to ignite national pride and unity, Lviv City Day encourages a sense of community. The events draw thousands of locals and guests of the city to the Western Ukrainian capital to celebrate together what it means to be a Leopolitan. This year Lviv will celebrate the 761st anniversary with an extravaganza of over 100 events. Festive celebrations will take place across the city and include concerts, tours and excursions, activities in all the city’s parks, a parade, and hundreds of other workshops, pageants, and other things to do – not to mention all the eating, drinking, dancing, singing, and people watching! The city expects about half of all Leopolitans and many guests of the city to participate in this celebration that truly offers something for everyone – except peace and quiet, that is! ДЕНЬ МІСТА 6–7 травня, центральна частина міста “Бо де ще всім людям так добре, як тут?“ питають у старій львівській пісні – і завжди відповідь буде одна: “Тільки у Львові“ – а саме, під час святкування Дня міста. Львів є серцем Західної України і щороку на початку травня разом з весною місто оживає й чепуриться щоб відсвяткувати свій день. У святкових заходах завжди беруть активну участь сотні тисяч місцевих жителів і гостей Львова, які хочуть відчути, як це бути львів’янином. Цього року програма святкування 761 річниці міста Лева налічує понад 100 заходів, серед яких численні концерти, тури та екскурсії, розважальні заходи у всіх міських парках, а ще майстер-класи, веселі паради та ярмарки, де можна купити сувеніри, поїсти щось смачненьке, послухати музику чи потанцювати. Місто очікує, що принаймні половина населення й численні гості міста візьмуть участь у святі, на якому буде щось для кожного – окрім, звичайно, тиші та спокою. The Flugery Lvova Programme
April 29th – May 1st in the centre of Rynok Square (inner yard of Lviv City Council) Over the past 15 years, the Flugery Lvova Jazz & Music Festival has become sort of a Lviv trademark. The ever-growing event provides the stage for jazz bands of all kinds – from beginner to world-class. More than 280 groups have appeared on its stage over the years and the festival has developed its own traditions and customs. Flugery Lvova has grown from a simple jazz celebration to a full festival featuring concerts, theatre performances, multimedia presentations, and literary evenings. This year’s programme will see 15 bands
from across Europe play a wide range of musical genres. Leopolitan music lovers and guests of the city will be able to hear jazz, blues, rock, indie, reggae, electronic, and experimental music. BG SYMPHONIA IN LVIV May 16th, 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Lviv’s wonderful Opera & Ballet Theatre will be the scene for the special musical delight of BG Symphonia, featuring the revered Boris Grebenshchikov, on May 16th. His success and fame – especially the lasting popularity of his band Aquarium (1972-present) – have earned him the moniker “The Grandfather of Russian Rock”. Grebenshchikov, alongside Milos Jelic of Lviv super-group Okean Elzy, joined the BG Symphonia on a Ukrainian national tour last November. Every concert sold
out and organisers decided to add an additional two dates in Kyiv and at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre. The BG Symphonia programme will feature some of Aquarium’s best-known hits, newly adapted by Jelic, who will serve as conductor. Past BG Symphonia participants will also feature, including guitarist Alexei Zubarev, flutist Brian Finnegan, and percussionist Liam Bradley. In addition, Grebenshchikov will present the author’s instrumental piece, written especially for the symphony
orchestra. Over his long career, Grebenshchikov has penned more than 500 songs – most of which have been performed publicly. He has 21 studio albums, 12 “unofficial” discs, and many more live records. Свободи, 28) Знаменитий поет і рок-музикант Борис Гребенщиков виступить на сцені львівського оперного театру у супроводі симфонічного оркестру 16 травня. Коли у далекому 1972 році молодий тоді музикант заснував рок-групу "Акваріум" він не міг собі навіть уявити, що через кілька десятиліть його величатимуть "дідусем російського року". Гребенщиков разом з клавішником і саундпродюсером "Океану Ельзи" Мілошем Єлічем вирушив у гастрольний тур Україною в листопаді минулого року. Квитки на всі

Extremely popular since first hitting Lviv cinemas in 2004 as part of the French Spring Festival, Long Nights of Short Metre returns to Lviv on April 29th. The concept is steadily gaining momentum – 6-7 hours to enjoy a selection of the best French short films during the night. INTERNATIONAL CAT SHOW May 13–14, Lviv’s S. Gzhytskyi National Academy of Veterinary Medicine (50 Pekarska St.) What do you call a gathering of more than 250 cats for two days of competition? Well, you could call it a “cluster of cats” or maybe even a “knot of kittens”, but here in Lviv we call it the International Cat Show. The event will showcase the best unneutered purebreds (known as “whole”), neutered purebreds (or “altered”), and mixed breeds (the “household” class). Judging a cat show is a strange and wonderful thing. Judges compare each cat according to a list of standards for the perfect specimen in each breed, but their methods – waving a feather wand around their faces or
holding them in the air by their haunches – admittedly look a bit comical to the uninitiated. As strange as it seems, the International Cat Show – which draws cat-contestants from around the world – is a serious business. GORGANY HALF MARATHON! April 23rd at 10:00 in front of the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Lviv’s annual Gorgany Half Marathon returns to the Western Ukrainian capital on Sunday, April 23rd with its marquee starting point in front of the city’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre. The half marathon is a road running race that distinguishes itself from its Olympic cousin full marathon by its distance: 21 kilometres. Participation in the sport has seen a resurgence over the last few years as it is known as a challenging distance that doesn’t require the same level of time and commitment as a full marathon. In fact, Running USA calls it the single, fastest-growing type of race. Lviv’s Gorgany Half Marathon has aimed to popularise active sport and leisure activities among Leopolitans and guests of the
city since it was first held in 2010. Participants are divided into categories based on age and gender and then run 21 kilometres through the heart of the Western Ukrainian capital and through one of the city’s most picturesque parks – Pohulyanka and back for finish to the square in front of Opera & Ballet Theatre. This year, there will also be a 4-kilometre race dedicated to charity fund raising. All participants receive memorable medals and winners are awarded with special prizes and certificates. Specifically, Active Weekend hopes to create opportunities for different generations to share experiences together by playing sports and games and having fun. Organisers scheduled the event for a Sunday, so that as many family members as possible could attend.

‘TOWARDS THE SUN’ HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL & PODILYA CUP 2017 May 18-21 in Kamyanets-Podilskyi (275 km from Lviv) Have you ever kicked back on the grass and experienced the beauty of a blue sky filled with hot air balloons gently gliding by? Their bright jewel colours expanding to create a panorama that takes your breath away? It’s moments like these that you want to capture with a photograph – and now you can! The ‘Towards the Sun’ and Podilya Cup 2017 are among the Khmelnytskyi region’s most photographed spring events. If you’re looking for some brilliant shots to up your social media game, then look no further! Each May, pilots, crews, and
spectators from all over Ukraine are drawn to Kamyanets-Podilskyi for western Ukraine’s largest hot air ballooning event. For several days, dozens of colourful balloons float above the city each morning as dawn breaks over the Smotrych River. Mass ascensions, when dozens of balloons lift off into the morning sky, are held each festival morning at 5:30 am, but only after “dawn patrol” carefully examines the morning’s weather conditions. When dawn patrol gives the green light, the balloons rise together in a harmonious lift off. The evenings are also
exciting during the balloon fiesta in Kamyanets-Podilskyi. Balloon enthusiasts fill the launch field and walk among the tethered balloons of every colour, size, and shape. As the propane burners inflate the balloons against a dark sky, they flicker like giant psychedelic light bulbs. Over 1000 visitors attend the festival each year, so make plans early to join in the fun. Don’t forget to book a hotel in advance! Sakura Fest
April 18–30 in Uzhhorod (265 km south of Lviv)
Among the things that Uzhhorodians are most proud of is their unique valley of rare sakuras (cherry trees). Found on both sides of the Uzh River, the area is Europe’s longest and most amazing alley with more than 1000 Japanese cherry trees. Their soft, pink blossoms begin blooming in late April to early May and turn the city into a fantastic, fairy-tale garden. Delicate cheery flowers and delectable aromas attract thousands of tourists to Uzhhorod every spring to admire this cheerful and tender miracle. These unique trees grow in only three places in the world:
exotic trees became very popular due to their pleasant smell and the beautiful pink colour. This is just one of the many legends of how Uzhhorod came to have its sakuras and many have little to do with reality. The official version is that the trees were brought to the city in 1923 when local authorities began actively developing Central Uzhhorod. Back then, the area was a swamp and its soil not suitable for the majority of trees, save the sakura. Since then, the sakura trees have not only taken root in the mild, Transcarpathian climate, but have become a
Japan, the United States, and Uzhhorod. How were these exotic trees brought to Western Ukraine? Legend has it that a Japanese delegation went to present Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I with the gift of a sakura and spent the night in Uzhhorod before the meeting. Of course, news of the visit of the Japanese delegation spread quickly around the city and at night – while the Japanese were sleeping – locals stole the cheery seedlings and planted the exotic trees to await their miraculous fruits. While the trees didn’t give any fruits as the locals had hoped, the

Звичайно ж, новина про візит японців швидко розлетілась містом, і вночі спритні закарпатці підмінили заморські саджанці, а оригінали висадили у своїх садках і стали чекати дива. Дивовижних плодів вони не дочекались, зате квітучі дерева надзвичайно

The symbol of the festival is the romantic magician Count Sakura, who appears at all the events to entertain Uzhorrodians and guests of the city. Another event to try to catch is at the beginning of May, when Uzhhorodians do their best to preserve and enlarge Sakura Alley by planting new seedlings. According to Japanese legend, those that personally plant the sakura are sure to find good luck and fortune.

Символом фестивалю є романтичний чарівник граф Сакура, який з'являється на всіх заходах, щоб розважати ужгородців і гостей міста. Кожного року кожен, хто бажає, може власноручно висадити саджанець сакури на цій алеї, яка таким чином постійно розростається на радість місцевих мешканців та гостей міста. COMES TO UKRAINE Over 230 million eyes from around the world will focus on Ukraine next month as the Eurovision Song Contest rolls into Kyiv from May 9 – 13. Ukraine won the right to host the event after Jamala won last year’s contest in Sweden with her haunting “1944”, about the Stalin-era deportation of Tatars from Crimea. Kyiv won the right
to host the event after beating out five other Ukrainian cities, including Lviv. The event will be the largest-ever, as 43 countries will send a representative to Kyiv. Poltava’s O. Torvald will represent Ukraine after winning the Ukrainian national selection contest in February with their song “Time”. While tickets to the main show are sold
out, there are still some available for the semifinal shows and the dress rehearsals. In addition, Kyiv will transform its central Khreshatyk Street into the “Eurovision Village”, a fan zone that will feature live performances, themed watch parties, and a food and beverage area. The event is expected to draw over 20,000 tourists.

Hello for the 100th time! You may have noticed the “Our 100th Issue” graphic on the cover of this month’s magazine. There’s a story that goes with that… Who’d have thought back in May 2008 when Lviv Today was started that 100 months later we would still be here? Turning 100 is a big event in anybody’s life – and it’s no different for LVIV TODAY | April 2017
this magazine. We’re a little larger than before – not just around the waist – but we’ve gone from 52 to 64 crammed, colourful pages, with the lvivtoday.com.ua website now taking up the overflow each month! Apart from that, not much has changed – we are still paddling like mad to keep up with all of the cultural, culinary, LVIV TODAY | April 2017
artistic, sporting, and business events that this great city has to offer each month! We called the magazine Lviv Today when it was launched as we anticipated most of our readers to live in this city. But now we have readers across Europe – heaps of them! – and even have readers as far away as Canada and Australia! We’ve
had a brilliant time, met loads of lovely Leopolitans, and seen the city experience some amazing things over the last 100 months. We are truly grateful to everyone that has contributed articles, columns, and photographs. We also want to thank the many people that have worked for Lviv Today over the years and right up to the
present issue. We have many loyal readers – and advertisers too (!) – and we want to thank you very much for your support. Lviv Today, Ukraine Tomorrow Lviv Today Publisher Peter Dickinson reflects on Lviv's role as a model for Ukraine's European transformation
A
lmost every media outlet in Ukraine is financially dependent on a wealthy owner of one description or another. This applies equally to television, radio and print media. A handful of these outlets are periodically profitable. Most are not. Lviv Today is different. Ever since the magazine was launched in 2008, it has been a self-sustaining success story. This has been possible thanks to the efforts of an inspired editorial team, and the support of a wider business community that rapidly recognized the value of a city guide capable of introducing Lviv to international audiences. Put simply, Lviv Today has prospered because so many people love Lviv. I should know – I am one of them. When I arrived in Ukraine in the late 1990s, I spent my first year in Lviv. It was just as fairytale beautiful and dizzily romantic then as it is now, but it had none of the self-confident polish and modern tourist conveniences it now boasts.
1990s Lviv was a secret city cordoned off from the outside world and trapped in a traumatic past which seemed to hold the whole city hostage. It was still deeply troubled by decades of savage and stultifying Soviet occupation – an experience that had radically altered the demographics of Lviv and left deep psychological wounds throughout local society. Leopolitans were still a ridiculously sophisticated and bohemian bunch, but they struggled with issues of identity and had yet to find their place in an independent Ukrainian state that had itself failed to meet expectations. The Lviv of 1998 was a dark and sometimes dangerous place with an air of frontier town lawlessness always lurking just below the elegant and cultured surface. Habsburg facades spoke of the city's
quintessentially European pedigree, but the streetlevel ambience often bore a closer resemblance to an Asian bazaar. There were only a handful of bars and restaurants to choose from. This limited selection of leisure options catered almost exclusively to the new rich of the city. Venue owners had little notion of the possibilities presented by a middle class clientele, never mind an international tourism industry. I can still remember fruitlessly trying to convince numerous bar proprietors to put TVs in their venues in order to screen 1998 World Cup matches. They thought it was a weird and stupid idea. People can watch football at home, they told me. Over the intervening two decades, Lviv has grown and prospered in ways that would amaze anyone who last visited the city in the 1990s. Lviv is now Ukraine's undisputed tourism capital and an increasingly popular destination among international visitors. The city has so many cozy restaurants and coffee shops that some people refer to it as Europe's Cafe Capital. This process began in the early 2000s and gained considerable momentum following the arrival of Mayor Sadoviy. It was Lviv's transformation into a tourist magnet that served as the inspiration behind the launch of Lviv Today magazine. My post-Lviv career had focused on the English-language media in the Ukrainian capital. For the first time, there now appeared to an opportunity for English-language media to prosper outside Kyiv. I had moved from Western Ukraine to Kyiv in 1999, but I never lost my love for Lviv and would frequently return to visit old friends. By the mid-2000s, it was obvious that major changes were finally taking place in the city. Confidence was high amid the national renaissance following the 2004 Orange Revolution,
while the removal of visa restrictions for European and North American visitors had opened up a whole world of new opportunities. Lviv Today was launched in spring 2008. The initial response was hugely gratifying, with the local authorities, cultural and business communities welcoming the publication enthusiastically. This overwhelming local support has been a constant feature ever since. We have always aimed to show the very best of life in Lviv, and this optimistic perspective has provided inspiration for others to innovate and improve the city. Our ultimate objective has always been to share our passion for Lviv with international audiences. Over the years, the magazine has enjoyed a reputation as an unofficial calling card for the city. This is a role we take great pride in and regard as a huge responsibility. Representing Lviv in a positive light is not difficult when there is so much that is progressive taking place in the city. Today's Lviv is a model for the whole of Ukraine. It is an internationally known city with a growing middle class, rising levels of international investment, a thriving tourism sector, and a self-confidence rooted in a strong sense of identity. All the ingredients for this success are also present elsewhere in Ukraine. Hopefully the rest of the country will catch up with Lviv in the coming years. I look forward to the day when every Ukrainian city has a publication introducing it to the world. We at Lviv Today will be happy to share our experience with anyone looking to boost Ukraine's profile by adding to the country's English-language offerings. But there is actually no great secret to our success – it is all about loving Lviv.
LVIV SOCIETY RYANAIR ARRIVES TO UKRAINE Europe’s #1 budget airline – Ireland’s Ryanair – announced its first Ukrainian flights at a press conference at Lviv’s D. Halytskyi International Airport on March 15th. Ryanair CCO David O’Brien, Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Volodomyr Omelyan, D. Halytskyi International Airport Director Tetyana Romanovska, and Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyy attended the press conference. “Ryanair is pleased to announce that low fares have finally arrived in Ukraine, our 34th country of operation”, said O’Brien. “We will launch 4 new Kyiv routes to Eindhoven, London, Manchester, and Stockholm, and 7 new Lviv routes to Berlin, Budapest, Eindhoven, Krakow, London, Munich Memmingen, and Wroclaw. JETRO DELEGATION VISITS LVIV Japanese business representatives from 21 companies visited Lviv on March 16th to discuss opportunities for trade and investment cooperation between Japanese and Ukrainian companies. The visit was organised by the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO). A business seminar was held at Lviv City Council for the delegation to meet city officials and Ukrainian business representatives. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi spoke of the importance of increasing Japanese investment in Ukraine as the country is now an attractive place given the macroeconomic stabilisation and growth in all key sectors of the economy, especially industrial production. He stressed the need to create new and expand existing production capacities. “We are extremely pleased to have this delegation in our city”, said Chief Investment Officer Olha Syvak. “We already have examples of successful Japanese investments and are now ready to present them to representatives of leading Japanese companies. It is a powerful message for potential investors, because we do not only declare some potential investment opportunities – we show that business is being built here and now.” After the seminar, participants had the opportunity to meet informally. Students from Lviv’s Polytechnic and Catholic universities presented projects to acquaint the delegation with their creative IT ideas. The delegation also visited the factory of Japanese country Fujikura, which opened a production facility in the Yavoriv district of Lviv region.

FRANCE’S EGIS SIGNS MEMO ON GARBAGE RECYCLING PLANT Representatives of Lviv City Council and France’s Egis company signed a memorandum on March 17th that the company will design a reclamation project at Lviv’s Hrybovychi landfill as well as a new waste recycling plant. Egis has worked in Ukraine in the public transport, roads, and utilities sectors since the 1990s. France’s Ambassador to Ukraine Isabelle Dumont and Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi attended the signing ceremony. “The memorandum with Egis is signed for nine months” said Sadovyi. “I am sure that we will see the first
results in May. This is a comprehensive work to be carried out. We are handing all of our preliminary studies over to our French colleagues.” He also mentioned that Egis has designed Europe’s largest reclamation project – at the Marseille (France) landfill. A 650,000 EUR grant by the French government will finance the works.

Ми передаємо всі наші попередні дослідження нашими французькими колегам." Мер міста також зазначив, що фірма Egis вже розробляла найбільший в Європі проект рекультивації полігону у Марселі. PLAST CELEBRATES 105TH ANNIVERSARY Several hundred ‘plastuny’ (members of PLAST) traveled from across Ukraine to Lviv for a special celebration to mark the 105th anniversary of the founding of the National Scout Organisation of Ukraine – PLAST. Modeled on the international scouting movement, PLAST was established in Lviv in 1912, four years after England’s Robert Baden-Powell founded the scouting movement. It was April 12th of that year that the initial Lviv plastuny swore their First PLAST Oath. Co-educational from the beginning, PLAST adapts scouting ideals and combines them with a deep commitment to Ukrainian cultural heritage. The celebrations began with a liturgy on April 8th, where PLAST members were thanked for their active summer camps and received a blessing for their endeavours over the coming year. The celebration then continued in Rynok Square, where Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi gave awards to Bohdan Hasyuk, one of the founders of Lviv’s PLAST organisation in 1991, and Halyna Tkachuk, chief counselor of PLAST since its post-independence creation. After the ceremony, PLAST members marched through the city centre to Lychakiv Cemetery for a solemn commemorative ceremony in honour of past PLAST heroes.
ПЛАСТУ – 105 РОКІВ! Кілька сотень пластунів з усієї України приїхали до Львова, щоб відсвяткувати 105 річницю заснування Національної скаутської організації України – Пласт. Створена на зразок міжнародного скаутського руху організація Пласт була заснована у Львові у 1912 році, через чотири роки після того, як в Англії Роберт Бейден-Пауелл заснував рух скаутів. Львівські пластуни прийняли першу присягу 12 квітня 1912 року. У Пласті з самого початку вишкіл проходять хлопці й дівчата разом, поєднуючи ідеали скаутського руху з глибоким патріотизмом і вивченням української культурної спадщини. Святкування 8 квітня 2017 року почалося з літургії, де члени Пласту отримали подяки за проведення літніх таборів і благословення на їхні майбутні починання в наступному році. Свято продовжилося на Ринковій площі, де мер міста Андрій Садовий нагородив Богдана Гасюка, одного із засновників організації Пласт у Львові у 1991 році і Галину Ткачук, головного радника місцевого Пласту, починаючи з перших днів. Після урочистої церемонії пластуни пройшли через центр міста і пішли на Личаківський цвинтар, де відбулась урочиста панахида за героями Пласту. LVIV TODAY | April 2017
MISS AFRICA LVIV 2017 Lviv’s trendy Picasso nightclub hosted the exotic Miss Africa Lviv 2017 beauty pageant on April 8th. The pageant aims to give young African girls currently living in Lviv a platform to showcase not only their beauty, but more importantly their culture, talent, and creativity. The pageant enables the girls to shine the spotlight on Africa, to share their stories with Leopolitans and guests of the city, and to inspire one another to build self-esteem and feel beautiful both inside and out. All of the contestants are African students currently studying at one of Lviv’s universities or institutes. The rich programme saw lovely ladies from several nations compete in different contests in an effort to impress the jury. Congo’s charming 20-year-old medical student Rachel Matembe Mohilo was crowned Miss Africa Lviv 2017 and received her tiara from last year’s winner, Tolu Sivebukola. Other winners included: Nigeria’s Jennifer Nwakaego Okeke as First Vice Miss, Zambia’s Jean Kwangu Mbambiko as Second Vice Miss, and Nigerian Amy Precions Utuk in fourth place. Congratulations to all the winners!

CASTING MISS LVIV 2017 Lviv’s uber-trendy Gloria Café hosted the casting for the upcoming Miss Lviv 2017 beauty pageant on March 30th. The Miss Lviv 2017 pageant itself will take place later this spring at Lviv’s lovely Opera & Ballet Theatre. The casting attracted more than 100 Leopolitan and area beauties ranging in age from 16 to 24 years old. The young ladies spent several hours presenting their best skills and personality traits in an effort to impress the judges. The professional jury, headed by Miss Lviv pageant manager and Miss Lviv 2009 Valerya Nikiforets, had the arduous task of selecting 14 talented and lucky girls to take part in the grand finale. Miss Lviv 2017 is the largest regional heat for Miss Ukraine, so among the many amazing prizes the young women can win, the winner will represent the Lviv region at the Miss Ukraine 2017 finals.

LVIV FASHION WEEK Autumn / Winter 2017 Lviv Fashion Week’s glamorous Autumn/Winter 2017 edition took place in the city from March 23-26, attracting numerous fashion experts, buyers, designers’ clients, and media. Eventgoers saw pret-a-porter collections by designer brands such as Italy’s Balossa, Germany’s Rockmädchen, and House of Byfield by Dutch designer Carmichael Byfield. New collections were also presented by young designers Anastasia Rozova, Svetland Ehrt, Famenki, and Adamovskaya. Perhaps the most anticipated shows came from Lesia Semi and Marta Wachholz. Semi once again proved her unique style and creative skills. Marta Wachholz enchanted the audience with intellectual fashion for the young and intelligent, featuring high-quality outfits of cut and fabrics, well-thought forms, and exquisite colour combinations and her show was met with a storm of applause. Lviv’s D. Halytskyi Airport was the main host of the spectacular catwalk shows and featured special events like the presentation of Ushkalo & Rozova’s photography project Nouveau Prenom, the presentation of Komisarenko’s men’s fashion magazine NVRMIND, and the presentation of Zubchenko’s Mr. Idol / Bz_ Parfums fragrance. Leopolitan fashion lovers and guests of the city also had the wonderful opportunity to see the exclusive collections of Good Fellow men’s accessories and learn about the fashion industry through lectures by Ukrainian designer Fedir Vozianov, Design House founder Iryna Golovchak, and fashion blogger Leonid Martynchyk. Visitors to the showroom on March 25-26 were also able to browse an impressive selection of stylish clothes, bags, shoes, and other fashion accessories from over 30 brands. One of the event’s highlights was the surprising collaboration between Italian brand Balossa – known for its interpretation, deconstruction, and transformation of the basic article of clothing, a white shirt – and Ukrainian Bob Basset’s design studio. The studio makes art objects out of various materials, especially skin and bone, metal, wood, stone, and glass. Bob Basset created masks and other products for Givenchy, stylist Panos Yapanisa, RSA Films, members of the Metallica band, Slipknot, Korn, and Tantric. Vogue.com called Bob Basset one of the 9 phenomena of the Ukrainian fashion revolution. Especially for the Lviv Fashion Week, the studio created the extravagant Creature performance.

EBA MET THE MINISTER OF FINANCE The EBA member companies had an excellent opportunity to address their concerns and requests to Oleksandr Danyliuk, Minister of Finance of Ukraine, and his team. Business community had an opportunity to learn about priority plans of the Ministry with a special emphasis on the reforms of the State Fiscal Service and creation of Financial Investigations Service. The effective reform of the SFS is one of the top issues as for today. In particular, the Ministry is going to optimize tax and customs services, reduce the number of supporting personnel and increase the number of people dealing with operating activity, hold an audit at the regional level in tax service, reduce the number of internal customs, standardize requirements to the places of custom registration and unify approaches to the customs valuation. The Minister once more stressed the need to create a new analytic Financial Investigations Service, which will deal only with economic crimes against public interest in finance and other spheres. It is planned to concentrate functions of certain power units of the Security Service of Ukraine and National Police within the new Service. The Ministry insisted on subordination of a new body directly to the Ministry of Finance, that shapes a policy and has a competence in spheres related to the Service. Mr Danyliuk suggests

that the formation and full launch of the new Service will take place in a year. According to the Minister, from 1 April, the new procedure for the administration of the register of VAT refunds will become operative, under which the Ministry of Finance will be an administrator of the register, and the register will be formed automatically based on information from databases of the SFS Ukraine and the State Treasury. It should be noted, the VAT refund will occur on a daily basis. Another discussion issues were devoted to the exit capital tax, introduction of cash registers and concept of authorized economic operators. Mr Danyliuk
noted that the Ministry was working on bills regarding all three issues. In a short time, the working group on elaborating Draft Law on exit capital tax will start its operation. The experts will conduct all necessary calculations and analyze all pros and cons of this approach. Also, the Ministry supports the massintroduction of use of cash registers but with the minimal additional burden for business. As for authorized economic operators, the relevant Draft Law was already registered in the Verkhovna Rada, but it was not considered yet. The Ministry hopes to accelerate the consideration of this Draft Law.

EBA SUPPORTS CHANGES FROM NBU European Business Association welcomes liberalization in the licensing of operations of placing funds outside Ukraine. Now, individuals are able to place foreign currency sourced outside of Ukraine (salaries, scholarships, pensions, dividends, etc.) on the foreign accounts. Also, individuals can invest funds located outside Ukraine abroad without individual licenses of National Bank of Ukraine. For example, conduct investment from foreign accounts, reinvest
funds outside Ukraine, conduct trade with financial instruments on foreign markets etc*. However, the Association stresses the need to simplify the business environment in Ukraine by a liberalization of placing funds outside Ukraine also for legal entities. *The changes approved by the Resolution of the National Bank of Ukraine Board from February 23, 2017 №14 "On amendments to some legislative acts of the National Bank of Ukraine". They take effect from 25 February 2017.

There is no unique recipe on how to be an amazing boss. Each manager chooses its own path and uses its own mix of instruments. Coaching as management style, DISC, clear communication, individual approach to different generations based on motivation factors are the tools that enable the manager to lead a team better and achieve strategic company’s goals. This was the main point of the discussion at Management Committee on March 17, 2017.
EBA HR COMMITTEE On March 9, 2017, HR managers from EBA member companies were discussing major issues in human resource management at manufacturing companies and searching for solutions to them. For the majority of the companies, these issues seem quite similar. Among the key problems are recruiting of qualified employees for production, the outflow of workers abroad, retention and motivation of the staff. According to the participants, decent conditions and fair salary, company image, the values of the company, friendly atmosphere in the team, as well as training and development are essential for retention of staff and good advantage when seeking new employees. Among other things, as the result of the event, it was decided to create a working group in order to consider the aspects of the employment of people with disabilities, to deepen cooperation with vocational schools and employment centers.
ENTERING EU MARKETS: OPPORTUNITIES FOR UKRAINIAN BUSINESS ‘How can we help?’ – that is how Hugues Mingarelli, the EU Ambassador to Ukraine started the meeting with representatives of small, medium and big business enterprises on 28 March at Citadel Inn hotel in Lviv. ‘Agreement on Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) shall be implemented, the European market is open to Ukrainian businessman’ – said Mr. Mingarelli. Oleg Synyutka, the Head of Lviv regional state administration, in turn, opening the event, thanked the EU Delegation to Ukraine for active stand and willingness to help Ukraine in developing economy using the knowledge and practice of the EU. Organizers of the event also invited experts from various fields who shared their thoughts on the following: • opportunities and challenges of the Association Agreement for the Ukrainian socio-economic development, • advantages of Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) for Ukrainian businessmen; • European integration through economic reforms in Ukraine; • the program «EU4Business» was presented, it aims at helping small and medium enterprises; • peculiarities of foreign trade and effective export strategy, • and, in conclusion, Lviv businessmen who have experience in entering the EU market shared their success stories.

JOINT EBA HR AND LEGAL COMMITTEE MEETING EBA HR and Legal Committees continue to discuss important issues in HR for production companies. This time on the platform of EBA Lviv office held a joint meeting of EBA member companies and representatives of the Lviv regional employment center, Lviv regional branch of the Fund of Social Protection of Disabled People. Participants considered key problematic issues in the employment of people with disabilities, namely colision in legislation, difficulties in the recruiting of workers with disabilities and 4% quota fulfillment by companies,noninclusive urban infrastructure, reluctance or distrust of people with disabilities in finding work and others. Taking into account these problematic aspects, participants suggested a number of initiatives on which, together with the local authorities we together will work in the future.
EBA MEETING WITH LODA ON FOREIGNERS EMPLOYMENT On March 15, 2017, in Lviv Regional State Administration the meeting on the employment of foreigners in Ukraine chaired by Rostyslav Zamlynsky, First Deputy Head of Lviv Regional State Administration was held. Representatives from the European Business Association, Lviv Regional Employment Center and the Department of Migration Service in Lviv region has attended the meeting. The main purpose of the meeting was to find the ways to solve problems in the area of employment of foreigners in Ukraine, including the technical barriers in continuation of certificates for temporary residence and work permits. As the results of the meeting, the participants agreed to prepare the memorandum between the involved parties in order to simplify the procedure of receiving the documents mentioned above. Simultaneously to Memorandum, also prepare draft amendments to the regulations of the relationship of the parties in the employment of foreigners. Adam Dear Adam, the procedure of the construction commissioning depends on the category of its complexity. Pursuant to Ukrainian legislation, there are in Ukraine 5 categories of construction complexity differing according to various criteria. Since you build a factory, we can assume that this construction belongs to 4th or 5th category of complexity. The procedure of construction commissioning is defined in the Law of Ukraine “On regulation of urban development” and Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 13.04.2011 No. 461 “Commissioning of the completed construction objects”. Construction that belongs to 4th or 5th category of complexity shall be commissioned based on the act of readiness of the construction object to exploitation by issuing of the certificate by the state architectural authority (at the place of construction). The date of issuing of the certificate shall be considered as the date of commissioning of the construction object. Based on the certificate you can: • conclude all contracts concerning i.e. water, gas, heat, electricity supply; • include the data about the construction object to the state statistical reporting; • register ownership of the property. The procedure of the state registration of the property is defined in the Law of Ukraine “On state registration of the proprietary rights on the real estate and their encumbrances” as well as in the Resolution of the Cabinet of Minister of Ukraine of 25.12.2015 No. 1127 “On state registration of the proprietary rights on the real estate and their encumbrances”. According to the mentioned acts, state registration of the ownership of the property may be conducted by any state registrar within the corresponding region (including notary). The list of documents to be submitted to the state registrar for the state registration is defined in the above mentioned acts and includes the certificate, technical passport, document confirming the assignment of the address etc. The state registration shall be conducted within 5 working days. The fee for the state registration amounts to 0,1 of the defined living wage (the fee may be increased if you want conduct the state registration in the shorter term).

Karate: KWF Kyokushing Karate Championship Ministry of Defense Summer Sports Training Center SKA played hosted the KWF Kyokushing Karate Championship for grown-ups, juniors and women on April 8th. The event was organized by the Lviv regional KWF Kyokushing Karate federation and personally federation’s president Volodymyr Rohansky (2nd Dan). The Kyokushing tournament drew over 170 athletes from all over Ukraine – Kyiv, Cherkasy, Dnipro, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Vyzhhorod, Zaporizhzhya and Zakarrpatya region. As main judge of the championship came Konstantyn Vysochynsky (5th Dan), while as general secretary of the event came representative of International KWF organization Shihan Andrzej Drewniak (8th Dan).
Lviv’s March Athlete of the Month: Veronika Marchenko Lviv’s European champion archer Veronika Marchenko was named Lviv’s Athlete of the Month for March for her dominating performances at the European Indoor Championships last month. Marchenko cruised through the tournament defeating her opponents by a combined score of 24:4, including a 6:0 thrashing of her Russian opponent in the final to be named European champion in the Individual Recurve event. Marchenko also assisted the Ukrainian team capture bronze in the Team Recurve event by dominating Russia 6:0. The 23-year-old had previously won the 2014 and 2016 individual European championships, the 2016 team European championship, and won bronze at the 2015 European Games. She finished 17th in the individual and 9th in the team events at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. Congratulations to Ms. Marchenko on her continued remarkable achievements!

Турнір залучив понад 170 спортсменів з усієї України – з Києва, Черкас, Дніпра, Івано-Франківська, Тернополя, Вишгорода, Запоріжжя та Закарпатської області. Головним суддею чемпіонату був Костянтин Височинський (п'ятий дан), а генеральним секретарем змагань – представник організації International KWF Шихан Анджей Древняк (восьмий дан).

Чемпіонка Європи львівська лучниця Вероніка Марченко була визнана спортсменкою місяця у березні за її виступ на європейському чемпіонаті зі стрільби у приміщенні. Марченко подолала своїх суперниць із загальним рахунком 24:4, в тому числі й російську суперницю у фіналі з рахунком 6:0, щоб здобути звання чемпіона Європи. В. Марченко також допомогла українській команді здобути бронзу в командному заліку, випередивши команду Росії з рахунком 6:0. Вероніка Марченко раніше перемагала у 2014 і 2016 роках у європейських чемпіонатах в індивідуальному заліку, у командному чемпіонаті Європи 2016 року, і здобула бронзову медаль на Європейських іграх 2015 року. Football: March was Magic for Karpaty FC March was a month to remember for Karpaty FC, as the team went undefeated in five matches and unveiled their new kits. It has been a trying season for Lviv’s beloved boys in green, as the team has been fighting relegation from early on due to a six point penalty imposed by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee for failure to clear their debts with former Bosnian midfielder Semir Štilić. After only two victories in their first 18 fixtures, March saw the team move out of the relegation position with wins over Stal Kamianske, Oleksandria, and rivals Volyn Lutsk. March was also marked by the unveiling of the squad’s sharp new green, white, and yellow kits. The white kit features the Lviv skyline along the stomach, while the green kit features a design based on ethnic vyshyvanka motifs. The club’s third kit is all yellow with green trim and features the Karpaty logo over the heart. Karpaty continues their bid to move up the standings this month with home games against Dnipro on April 9th and rival Volyn on April 22nd.

Це був важкий сезон для зелено-білих, оскільки команда бореться за виживання з самого початку через шість штрафних очок, накладених дисциплінарним комітетом ФІФА на клуб за неврегульовану ситуацію із заборгованістю перед колишнім боснійським півзахисником Семіром Штілічем. Після всього лише двох перемог в своїх перших 18 матчах, команда в березні стала почуватися дещо впевненіше з перемогою над командами "Сталь" з Кам´янського, "Олександрія" і "Волинь" з Луцька. У березні були презентовані нові комплекти форми – зелений, білий та жовтий. На грудях білої майки внизу зображений силует Львова, зелена оздоблена елементами народної вишивки, третій комплект форми – жовтий із зеленими вставками та емблемою "Карпат" на грудях. Bodybuilding: Lviv Region Championships Some of Western Ukraine’s strongest and fittest athletes flexed their goods at Lviv Region Bodybuilding Open Cup Championships at Lviv’s G. Hotkevych Palace of Culture on April 2nd. The event attracted more than 100 athletes to compete in a variety of categories, including events specifically for juniors and veterans. Kyiv’s Mykyta Pustovit took home the honours in the most prestigious weight category of 90+ kg. Other winners included: Bikini: Lidiya Marusych (Donetsk), Body Fitness: Yulia Gombosh (Zakarpattya), Men’s Physique: Yuriy Yovbak (Zakarpattya), and Absolute Bodybuilding: Sergiy Bordenyuk (Khmelnytskyi).

WHERE THE HOCKEY IS H
ockey events always draw the best fans. Maybe you’ll meet a ‘super fan’, ringing a cowbell or beating a drum with their face-painted and wearing a ridiculous national-themed costume. But if you’re really lucky – you’ll get to meet Scott McKenzie – the Canadian nomad that is making his case to be the sport’s purest – and most well-traveled – fan.
You’ll get to meet “Dad”, as his friends affectionately call him, as he stops in at the World Hockey Championships in Kyiv later this month. Just one stop on his epic 6-month, 9-country tour that will see him catch 60 games at 9 events in 8 countries. In fact, this isn’t even his first stop in Ukraine on the tour – he popped into the country to catch a couple of Ukrainian Premier League games in January. The cordial Canuck is always happy to “talk puck” – especially over a beer – so if you see him in Kyiv, here’s what you need to know.
Becoming a “super fan” Scotty has never been very far from the game. He grew up playing defence in Edmonton during the dynasty days of the Edmonton Oilers – Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri et al brought 5 Stanley Cups to Edmonton in a 7-year span. He learned how to play the game and how to watch it. Canadians wear their teams’ jerseys to the game, often paint their faces, and can usually be found with a beer (or three) in their hands. Those lessons were well placed when he attended his first international tournament in Mannheim, Germany in 2010. He fell in love with the fans, the German beer halls, and the community aspects of the tournaments. Soon he found himself at more and more obscure tournaments in more far flung places, like the World Championships in Minsk, Belarus, the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland, the World Junior tournament in Ufa, Russia, the Ivan Hlinka U18 event in Breclav, Slovakia, or even the Challenge Cup of Asia in Bangkok, Thailand. But perhaps his most interesting experience was in Druzhkivka, Ukraine on January 29th.

in Ukraine to catch home games in Bila Tserkva (Bilyy Bars) and Druzhkivka (Ukrainian champion HC Donbas). Traveling to Ukraine’s east is simply a no-go for most foreigners, but Scotty is always on the lookout for a good game of puck. Rocking his trademark long hair and Canadian jersey, he quickly earned the name ‘Metallica’ and became an instant celebrity – taking photographs with the locals, signing autographs for the kids, doing interviews for the media, and even meeting with the players after the game. The best part, for him, was the postgame skate with the kids in Bila Tserkva and the post-game ceremony in Druzhkivka, “Bringing kids down for pictures with the team, giving them gifts, inviting the cadets for pictures, the post-game skate was fantastic!”, he said. “Every junior team in Canada should do the same thing.” He didn’t find out that nearby Avdiivka was bombed while he was at the game until the train ride back to Kyiv.
“Home is where the hockey is” He doesn’t quite know what to expect from the Ukrainian team at the championships in Kyiv, but he is looking forward to meeting the fans. “I think the #1 thing that excites me is to see the fans”, he said. “And also to watch the guys we met with in Druzhkivka represent their country on home soil.” For Scotty, the hockey is what draws him to a place, but it’s the people that make the memories. And Scotty is the one that
makes the memories for everyone else. From handing out Canadian flag temporary tattoos to the kids, to exchanging his Canadian jersey for a local one with a ‘super fan’, to enjoying a beverage with the parents of the players or the scouts – everybody remembers Scotty McKenzie. “No matter what country I’m in, or how far from home I am, or how few people I know – so long as there is a hockey game going on, I feel I’m home”. The stories come from there, and he’ll be sure to share them with you – from watching hockey in a war zone to playing hockey with his hometown hero Jari Kurri – Scotty McKenzie is as pure a fan as they come. В 2014 році центр отримав медичну ліцензію та розпочав діяльність вже як “Медичний центр фізичної терапії та медицини болю “Інново”. В центрі є окремі відділення – для дорослих та для дітей. Мета “Інново” – сприяти покращенню якості життя людини та її фізичного стану.
