It’s time to say bye

to superstitions

Ukraine’s superstitions are too numerous to name.

As the country moves toward Europe, maybe it’s time to lose some of them.

C

hances are, if you’ve lived in Ukraine long enough, you’ve encountered your fair share of superstitions. Whether you are told that you can’t shake hands through a door, to put your glass on the table when someone pours you vodka, or to not sit at the corner of a table – just to name a few – Ukrainians swear by them. Many of these beliefs date back to pagan times, meaning the advent of Christianity over 1,000 years ago has done little to shake their hold. With a 1,000+ year history, superstitions in Ukraine have become something else altogether – they’ve become traditions. Ask your Ukrainian friends why they adhere to the superstitions, or where they came from, and you’re likely to get an answer along the lines of ‘because that’s just the way it is here’. With Ukraine about to enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen area, it’s time for Ukrainians to take stock of which of these traditions should stay, and which should go the way of paganism, and become obsolete.

If it can’t be explained, it shouldn’t be maintained Ukrainians are not alone in following superstitions. Many Western countries find black cats, walking under ladders, or even the number 13 to be “unlucky”. In fact, some buildings refuse to use a 13th floor for this reason, to the chagrin of noble firefighters. Yet, these ideas are usually greeted with at least a tacit understanding that they are not based in fact. Ukrainians, on the other hand, take their superstitions seriously. Some for good reason: you don’t pour vodka in a glass in the air so that the person drinking (who may very well be drunk) doesn’t spill. Some for a not so good reason: an unmarried girl that sits at the corner of a table will not get married for seven years

because the corner represents “bad energy”. Still, that ‘bad energy’ will ensure that a game of musical chairs ensues so that the unmarried lass is positioned in a place with better energy, i.e. not the corner.

How are pagan beliefs still a thing?

Some traditions could easily be dropped without affecting the fabric of Ukrainian identity. The superstitions of not shaking hands through a doorway and not whistling indoors can both be traced to the pagans.

Shaking hands could upset the house’s original (and long-dead) owner, while whistling could summon evil spirts. Clearly ridiculous, you’ll likely still offend your Ukrainian friends by breaking these rules. Worse yet is when these superstitions become beliefs that are commonplace – like old wives tales. If you’ve never discussed the science behind the Ukrainian term ‘protyah’ (translates as the drought between two open windows) with a babushka, you haven’t yet completed your Ukrainian experience.* As Ukraine continues its march towards Europe, perhaps now is a good time to drop some of the more ridiculous superstitions. * The discussion goes something like this: “Close the window or you’ll get sick.” “Why would I get sick?” “Because of protyah.” “What is protyah?”

Lviv’s majestic Opera & Ballet Theatre will be the site for the third annual Ballet Fest choreography festival from May 27–28. The event aims to discover and promote contemporary choreographers. The Ballet Fest project began earlier this year and has seen choreographers and dancers selected at different stages. The annual competition is known to attract talents from across Ukraine and has become one of the most recognised choreography competitions in Western Ukraine. Choreographers attempt to impress the festival’s jury in the hopes of presenting their work to the audience at the gala concert in May. The goal is that the exposure from their Ballet Fest performance will help launch the careers of many talented artists. The Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre provides the dancers for the festival. LEOPOLIS GRAND PRIX 2017 June 2–4 at various locations around the city The Leopolis Grand Prix is an international vintage car festival that delights Leopolitan car lovers and guests of the city each summer. This year’s event will see the beautiful vehicles take centre stage from June 2–4. The event is designed to mark the first Leopolis Grand Prix, held in 1930 before Lviv was even part of Ukraine. The first track used is still known as the ‘Lviv Triangle’ and runs along the streets from Vitovskoho to I. Franko to Stryska and Maidan Heroes. The track is known as one of the most difficult in Europe because of the cobblestone streets and considerable elevation. The Leopolis Grand Prix was one of the earliest in Europe, with only the Monaco Grand Prix being organised earlier in 1929. The event attracted teams from across Europe, but was unfortunately cancelled in 1934 due to political and economic problems. The race was revived by ZAZ-Kozak, the auto club for Zaporozhets ZAZ-965 owners. In addition to the races around the ‘Lviv Triangle’, the Leopolis Grand Prix also features rally racing outside Lviv, a classic car show, and a parade of the vintage vehicles. Перегони 2017 року проводяться, щоб відзначити перші змагання у Львові в 1930 році та другі – після Монако. Перегони проходитимуть знаменитим "Львівським трикутником", що проліг сучасними вулицями В. Вітовського, І. Франка, Стрийською та Героїв Майдану. Ця траса відома, як одна з найскладніших у Європі, маючи покриття з бруківки та значний перепад висот. Як відомо, перші перегони Гран Прі вулицями Монако відбулись на початку 1929 року, а гонорові львів’яни не хотіли пасти задніх і організували подібні перегони у себе. Тоді у змаганнях взяли участь команди зі всієї Європи, але, на жаль, організаторам вдалось протриматись лише до 1934 року через політичні та економічні проблеми у Європі. Leopolis Grand Prix був відроджений вже у ХХІ столітті зусиллями ентузіастів авто-фан клубу "ЗАЗ-Козак". В наш час до перегонів на трасі "Львівського трикутника" додались ралійні перегони за межами Львова, виставка і парад античних автомобілів вулицями Львова та багато супутніх заходів.

NINO KATAMADZE & INSIGHT May 28th at 19:00 at the Malevich Concert Arena & Nightclub (2, Chornovola Ave.) Lviv’s Malevich Concert Arena & Nightclub will host a fabulous concert by Nino Katamadze& INSIGHT on May 28. Katamadze& INSIGHT feature a complex and otherworldly musical experience for lovers of serious art. The performers have played more than 100 sold out concerts in prestigious halls in Ukraine, Russia, the Baltics, and the USA. Today, Katamadze& INSIGHT are legitimate global stars and feature at many festivals and musical projects. Katamadze insists that there was no magic bullet; that she just had to sing so that she was heard. Audiences love Nino for her ability to go down to the most primitive level of melody and to pour her soul out in simple but powerful lyrical melodies based on Georgian motifs. LVIVKLEZFEST INTERNATIONAL JEWISH MUSIC FESTIVAL May 15 – June 4 at locations around the city Lviv will host the ninth annual LvivKlezFest international celebration of Klezmer music from May 15 – June 4. The Western Ukrainian capital is known as one of the country’s most important and beautiful cultural centres.

The city hosts over 100 festivals annually and LvivKlezFest is one of the most unique and well-established. The festival isn’t just about Yiddish and Jewish music, song, and dance – it’s an encounter of languages, styles, cultures, creativity, and good vibes. On one hand, the festival represents an attempt to recreate the Jewish musical culture that was lost during the Holocaust as well as to revive that part of the Galician multicultural capital. On the other, the festival attracts and unites tourists from all over the world, confirming Lviv’s reputation as “the city of all cultures and peoples”.

Symbolically, all musicians are of Ukrainian origin. For example, Polina Shepherd is a direct descendant of famed Ukrainian philosopher Hrihory Skovoroda. Each year the festival attracts some of the world’s most renowned Jewish music and art professionals, including Grammy Award winners. There are plenty of other activities to go along with the musical programme, including artistic and historical exhibitions, Jewish quarter tours, theatrical performances, workshops on Jewish dance, music, and song, and lots of activities for your kids. The final gala concert will take place at Rynok Square on June 4 and feature performances by many Ukrainian and foreign artists.

ONUKA RETURNS TO LVIV May 30th at 19:00 at the Malevich Concert Arena & Night Club (2 Chornovola Ave.) Lviv’s Malevich Concert Arena & Night Club will host one of Ukraine’s hottest rock groups – ONUKA – in concert on May 30th. The band was formed in 2013 when Eugene Filatov (aka The Maneken) partnered with Nata Zhyzhchenko, the former vocalist of Ukraine’s Tomato Jaws. In Ukrainian, Onuka means ‘granddaughter’. It is a tribute to Zhyzhchenko’s grandfather and renowned folk-instrument maker, OleksandrShlionchyk. She started Tomato Jaws with her brother, and remained active for 11 years. Many of their songs were remixed by Filatov – which led to their collaboration on ONUKA. The band’s sound includes electronic drums, trombones, French horns, and the Ukrainian folk instruments bandura and sopilka. Zhyzhchenko believes that old traditions and classic folk instruments – like the ones she uses – disappeared under the Soviet Union. ONUKA’s debut album was released in October 2014 and quickly became the best-selling record of the month on iTunes Ukraine. Their first EP, ‘Look’, debuted at №1 and they released their second, ‘Vidlik’, last February. Zhyzhchenko cites the Chornobyl disaster and its impact on Ukraine as a major influence on the album. lava Salyuk, a Leopolitan artist and Lviv College of Technology graduate in fashion design, recently showcased her ‘Geography’ jewelry exhibit at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York. The exhibit featured Salyuk’s intricate and ornate necklaces based on global motifs. An introspective journey through time, the artist takes the viewer on a path from Ukraine’s Carpathian Mountains, across the Arabian Peninsula, through the African Serengeti, to the jungles of South America.

She explores the mystical relationships between the distinct cultures whose ethnic and spiritual paths have yet to cross – until now. The event was organised and curated by the institute’s art director, Walter Hoydysh, and ran from 18 March to 2 April. Salyuk founded the ‘Sececcion’ fashion studio collective in Lviv in 1994 and regularly exhibits her creations at Lviv’s Iconart Contemporary Sacred Art Gallery. Her wearable designs are highly sought-after in Ukraine and abroad. She was first introduced to jewelry design by her father – Leopolitan poet, actor, artist, and jeweler Lyubart Lishcynskyi. Together they crafted unique interpretations based on hutsul-inspired zgarda. After his death in 1998, Salyuk developed her own voice and style by incorporating international motifs into Ukrainian designs. Salyuk became interested in the similarity of women’s jewelry from different cultures and periods. She noticed, for example, that an 18th Century Ethiopian cross could easily be mistaken for a cross fabricated in Kyiv in the 13th Century, or that a Coptic cross might bear similar detailed motifs to those found on Hutsul-carved architectural detailing or decorative chests. ьвівська художниця Слава Салюк, випускниця львівського технологічного коледжу за спеціальністю "дизайн одягу", недавно презентувала свою виставку прикрас під назвою "Географія" в Українському інституті Америки в Нью-Йорку. На виставці представлені складні й багаті намиста роботи Слави Салюк, з використанням світових мотивів. Створюючи інтроспективну подорож у часі, художниця проводить глядача шляхом від Українських Карпат, через Аравійський півострів, Африканську рівнину Серенгеті до джунглів Південної Америки. Вона досліджує містичні відносини між різними культурами, чиї етнічні та духовні шляхи ще не перетинались. Організатором і куратором заходу, що проходив з 18 березня по 2 квітня, був художній директор інституту Уолтер Гойдиш. Слава Салюк заснувала театр-студію “Сецесія” з моделювання одягу й проведення показів у Львові ще в 1994 році і регулярно демонструє свої творіння у львівській галереї сучасного сакрального мистецтва "Іконарт". Її прикраси мають великий попит як в Україні, так і за кордоном. До їх виготовлення її залучив власний батько – львівський поет, актор, художник і ювелір Любарт Ліщинський. Разом вони створювали унікальні інтерпретації на теми традиційної гуцульської прикраси згарди. Після його смерті в 1998 році Слава змогла створити свій власний стиль, що включає міжнародні мотиви в українські проекти. Художницю зацікавила схожість жіночих прикрас з різних культур і епох. Вона зауважила, що, наприклад, ефіопський хрест 18 століття був дуже подібний до хреста, виготовленого в Києві в 13 столітті, або те, що на коптському хресті можуть бути мотиви, дуже подібні до тих, що оздоблюють гуцульські будівлі або декоративні скрині. Ці спостереження переросли у проект "Географія" – результат трирічних досліджень етнічних мотивів жіночих прикрас. Hemingway’s books

viv’s-own Old Lion Publishing House is set to release two of famed American author Ernest Hemingway’s most popular titles – ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ and ‘Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises’ – as part of the Arsenal International Book Festival – the largest annual event in Eastern Europe dedicated to art and literature. The festival aims to promote the Ukrainian literary environment and book market through the international exchange of best practices. This will be the first time that Hemingway’s literary masterpieces will be published in Ukrainian since the country’s independence in 1991. Hemingway is considered one of the 20th Century’s finest writers.

He won the 1952 Pulitzer Prize and the 1994 Nobel Prize for Literature for ‘The Old Man and the Sea’. The novel was translated by Volodomyr Mitrofanov, while Kharkiv’s Sasha Schulz provided the publication with spectacular illustrations. Leopolitan artist Oksana Yorysh provided the visuals for the Victor Morozov-translated ‘Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises’. The publishing house also plans to release Hemingway’s ‘Men Without Women’ short story collection, translated by Hanna Leliv, before the year’s end.

of Ukrainian animation greatness New movie about a Ukrainian forest nymph makes a splash at the prestigious Cartoon Movie festival in Bordeaux, France.

T

here was a time when Ukrainian animation was considered to be among the best in the world. From hits as early as 1927’s ‘Ukrainianisation’, 1966’s Golden Shoe-winning ‘Little Bear and the One that Lives in the River’ and the spectacularly successful and long-running ‘Cossacks of the Zaporizhia Sich’, to more recent hits such as 1983’s multi-award winning Sirko (Once Upon a Dog) and this year’s inaugural Ukrainian Dziga (Oscar) winner for Best Animated Feature, Mykyta Kozhumyanka (The Dragon Spell) – Ukraine has a long and rich history of animation. It looks like they’ll have a new film to join them after Animgrad Studio’s Mavka: The Forest Song wowed audiences during a pitch at Bordeaux’s influential Cartoon Movie festival.

The forest nymph falls in love

Still in production, and not set for release until late 2018, the movie is about Mavka, a beautiful forest nymph that faces an impossible choice between her duty as guardian of the forest and the love of a human, a talented young musician named Lukash. “Since time immemorial, the vast Ukrainian forests have harboured countless secrets and unfathomable mysteries”, the film’s sleek website explains. “Will Mavka and Lukash be able to defend their feelings for each other? Will Mavka be able to save the forest and protect her love?

Will each of the two young lovers from different worlds make the right choice?”

The festival falls for the forest nymph The production team at Mavka certainly looks to have made a few right choices of their own. Mavka became the first-ever Ukrainian project selected by the Cartoon Movie European animation forum to be selected to pitch their film, and the team didn’t disappoint. Presenters wore traditional Ukrainian outfits by designer Olga Navrotskaya and film footage was accompanied by original music by ethno-rockers Dakha Brakha. Representatives from Disney called the presentation of Mavka the highlight of the forum and are in negotiations on joint production, while forum participants named Mavka as one of the best 50 pitches, citing the high-quality visuals and strength and originality of the leading character as reasons. Mavka herself made it to the cover of Animation Magazine, which as an event partner, ensured her face was omnipresent throughout the event. The magazine also listed the project as one of the most important upcoming animated

projects. The Cartoon Movie festival has attracted some of the biggest animated movies over the last decade, including 2003’s ‘The Triplets of Belleville’, 2010’s ‘A Cat in Paris’ and ‘Chico & Rita’, 2012’s ‘Ernest & Celestine’, and 2015’s ‘Shaun the Sheep’ – all of which have been nominated for or won Academy Awards.

A breakthrough for Ukrainian animation?

Mavka is based on a Lesya Ukrainka play of the same name, as well as on traditional Ukrainian myths and cultural traditions. The team has worked with many of the country’s leading ethnography institutions to ensure a beautiful interpretation of Ukrainian myths, legends, customs, and rituals and has received a grant by the

Ukrainian State Film Agency towards 30 percent of its total budget of $3.7 million USD. Animigrad Studios was founded in 2012 and is developing several animated features for foreign markets, including Stolen Princess (2018), Snow Republic (2020), and Roxelana & Suleiman (2021). These film projects have yet to attain the polish or generate the buzz that Mavka has, but if the level of talent and commitment shown in Mavka can be applied to the other features, Ukraine looks to have a major player in European animation on its hands – a return to the glorious past of Ukrainian animation. LVIV SOCIETY LVIV’S 761st ANNIVERSARY Lviv celebrated 761 years in style with a jam-packed programme of festivities – including public concerts, street performances, parades, sports events, exhibitions, cultural initiatives, and holiday markets – from 5–9 May. Leopolitans kicked off the celebrations by honouring the patron saint of Lviv, St. Yuriy (St. George) with divine services at nearly all of the city’s churches and temples. To mark the holiday, Lviv’s Metropolitan Chambers launched an art exhibition of paintings of the St. George Cathedral, a rightful UNESCO Heritage List item. Eventgoers were able to get their postage stamps featuring the cathedral stamped with a special postmark.

Museum Square held a celebratory breakfast on 6 May where attendees were treated to delicious pastries and coffee to the sound of classical music performed by the chamber orchestra at musical school #10.

That day also saw the Lviv Hundred Rally, which saw over 600 cyclists embark from the city centre on a 100 km race in honour of City Day. Not to be outdone, the “Batyars on Rovers” bike ride was also held on the same day, which saw Leopolitans dive into the style and atmosphere of the Batyars’ jolly spirit. An impressive parade featuring over 2000 participants also marched through the centre of the city.

In the evening on Rynok Square, Leopolitans and guests of the city were delighted by Bohdan Soroka’s spectacular 3D mapping-based graphics and the accompanying Collegium Musicum orchestra. Leopolitan bikers threw a parade on 7 May to mark the beginning of biking season that drew over 500 participants, while Leopolitans and guests of the city discovered many other cultural delights, like themed tours, concerts, and open air performances for the rest of the long weekend.

761 РІЧНИЦЯ ЛЬВОВА Цього року 5–9 травня Львів офіційно відсвяткував свій 761-й день народження з обширною програмою публічних концертів різних музичних колективів, спортивних заходів, виставок, культурних ініціатив, святкових ярмарків та багато іншого. Урочистості розпочалися зі святкового богослужіння майже у всіх храмах і церквах міста. Львів’яни вшанували пам'ять святого Юрія (Георгія), покровителя міста і з цієї нагоди у львівських митрополичих палатах була представлена виставка картин з зображаннями церкви Юра, як її називають в народі. Цей собор внесений до списку всесвітньої спадщини ЮНЕСКО, і саме в ньому відбулося погашення поштової марки із його зображенням.

Вранці, 6 травня, на Музейній площі відбувся святковий сніданок зі смачною випічкою та запашною кавою. Захід проходив під звуки класичної музики у виконанні камерного оркестру музичної школи № 10. Також цього ранку у велоперегонах "Львівська сотка", головній велосипедній події цієї весни, присвяченій Дню міста, взяли участь понад 600 велосипедистів, що вирушили з центру міста на 100-кілометрову трасу. А протягом дня барвистий вуличний парад понад 2000 учасників пройшов через центр міста. Увечері львів’яни та гості міста могли побачити вражаючі 3D-зображення на фасаді Ратуші, які створив художник комп’ютерної графіки Богдан Сорока, в супроводі оркестру Collegium Musicum. Також 6 травня в центрі міста пройшов Велопробіг "Батяри на роверах" за участю багатьох львів’ян, які вирішили зануритися в стиль і атмосферу першої половини ХХ століття. У неділю 7 травня львівські байкери, яких було понад пів тисячі, відкрили сезон, проїхавши містом на своїх сталевих конях. Багато культурних заходів відбулось у Львові 8–9 травня – тут і тематичні екскурсії, і концерти, і виступи артистів під відкритим небом і багато чого іншого.

ROTARY SERVING HUMANITY IN LVIV

The Lviv International Rotary Club presented residents of the Lviv Elderly Home with 48 multifunctional beds along with new mattresses and sheets provided by Danish hospitals at an event on 22 April. The beds were donated from Danish hospitals by Danish Rotary Club Odense, and imported into Ukraine by the local charity “Nova Krayina.” At the event members of Rotary Clubs Lviv International and Odense, Denmark, the director of “Nova Krayina,” Lviv Oblast Governor Oleh Syniutka and other welcomed guests helped one of the residents celebrate her 97th birthday. A concert featuring a youth choir and folk musicians also entertained the residents. “I am thankful to our Danish colleagues and the help from Lviv residents”, said Syniutka. “Today they have done more than just give humanitarian aid – they have given their kindness and their hearts.” Lviv International Rotary Club president Lars Vestbjerg was on hand for the occasion. “Many elderly cannot walk or sit, but with the new adjustable beds, they are now able to sit to read a book or watch TV or enjoy dinner.”

Volunteers say that more assistance is needed, including food, clothing, books, and – most importantly – care and attention. Some residents no longer have family to come and visit them, so all assistance is welcome.

Це подарунок від датського Ротарі клубу в м. Оденсе, а доставила його в Україну благодійна організація "Нова Країна". На цьому заході члени Ротарі Клубу Львова та Оденсе, директор благодійної організації "Нова Країна", губернатор Львівщини Олег Синютка та інші гості взяли участь у святкуванні 97 дня народження одної з мешканців закладу. Відбувся також концерт за участю молодіжного хору і народних музикантів. "Я вдячний нашим датським колегам, а також львів'янам за допомогу", сказав О. Синютка. "Сьогодні вони не просто надали гуманітарну допомогу – вони поділились своєю добротою і теплом своїх сердець". Президент львівського клубу Ротарі Lviv International Ларс Вестб´єрг також мав слово. "Багато літніх людей не можуть ходити або сидіти, але з новими регульованими ліжками, тепер вони можуть сидячи почитати книгу або подивитись телевізор чи насолодитися вечерею". Волонтери кажуть, що потрібно більше допомоги, включаючи їжу, одяг, книги і – найголовніше – турботу й увагу. Деякі мешканці цього дому не мають родичів, щоб могли їх відвідати, так що будь-яка допомога вітається.

Цього року захід, присвячений темі “Зміна траєкторії розвитку: Нові стратегії, інструменти і ринки” зібрав понад 150 учасників з провідних банків і фінансових установ, державних і громадських служб, а також підприємців. Організований юридичною компанією HD Partners цей неполітичний, некомерційний форум спрямований на поліпшення бізнес-середовища в Україні. Мер Львова Андрій Садовий та керуючий партнер HD Partners Володимир Глащенков відкрили захід вітальними промовами. Учасники обговорили поточні стратегії, методи й регіональні проекти розвитку

The sparkling Arena Lviv played host to city’s longestablished Spring Business Forum on April 27th, with a business breakfast with the Ukrainian Union of Entrepreneurs (SUP) held the next morning on the summer terrace at Citadel Inn Hotel & Resort. This year’s event was dedicated to the theme of “Changing the Trajectory of Development: New strategies, instruments, and markets” and drew over 150 participants from leading banks and financial institutions, government and public services, and entrepreneurs. Organised by the HD Partners legal company, this apolitical, non-profit forum aims to improve the business environment in Ukraine. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi and managing partner at HD Partners Volodymyr Glaschenkov opened this year’s event with welcoming speeches. Attendees discussed current strategies, techniques, and regional development projects with potential investors. Discussion panels focused on key issues like the state of Ukraine’s financial sector, examples of building successful Ukrainian companies, and expert analysis on Ukraine’s economy from a medium-term perspective. The highlight of the forum was the signing of the guaranteed contract to implement e-tickets on public transport and to promote environmentally-friendly public transport between Sadovyi and EBRD director Shevki Acuner. VIP speakers represented a wide variety of Ukrainian and foreign companies, like the National Bank of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Association of Manufacturers, the Kyiv National Economic University, Nova Poshta, and independent analysts.

TURKISH UKRAINIAN BUSINESS & INVESTMENT FORUM The Turkish Ukrainian Business and Investment Forum took place in Lviv on April 27–28. The first day saw Turkish business leaders visit Lviv-area enterprises with foreign investments, including Veon (Netherlands), Spheros-Electron (Ukraine-Germany), Onur Insaat (Turkey), and Onur Grup LLC EFE-Concrete. The delegation learned about the economic and investment potential of the Lviv region and made contacts with their Ukrainian colleagues.

The second day drew the group to Kavalier Hotel to meet with Ukrainian government officials such as Deputy Prime Minister Stepan Kubiv and Head of Lviv State Administrations Oleh Synyutka. Other attendees included Ruşen Çetin,President of the Turkish-Ukrainian Business Council DEIK (Foreign Economic Relations Board

of Turkey), Burak Pehlivan, President of the Association of Turkish and Ukrainian businessmen (TUİD), Shevki Acuner, Director of the EBRD office in Ukraine, Holham Ydyrym, President of the World Institute of Sustainable Energy (WSEIN), Dr. Orhan Komlek, CEO of TUBİTAK MARMARA TEKNOKENT. The primary focus of discussions at the hotel were on the Turkish Ukrainian Free Trade Agreement. “Now is the best time to invest in Ukraine”, said Kubiv. “The economy has stabilised, there is a cheap labour force, and the corruption factor has been significantly reduced. The free trade agreement between our countries will be concluded by this autumn or spring 2018 and will accelerate the investment processes and boost cooperation between Ukraine and Turkey.”

MOLOKIYA: FAIR, HEALTHY, AND TASTY Ternopil’s Molokiya dairy factory can boast of having 60 years of long production activity. Following the 1999 appointment of factory manager Vitaliy Kovalchuk, who successfully preserved production facilities, the company went on to modernise its technology. Today, the factory is recognised as one of Ukraine’s top 10 in terms of fresh dairy products. Being one of Ukraine’s top five dairy products brands, the factory produces the popular fresh dairy products and well-known Molokiya milk. Each day, the factory serves more than one million Ukrainians by producing over 350 tonnes of Molokiya milk to distribute 400,000 packages of milk to thousands of shops in 14 regions. In addition, the factory provides thousands of jobs for residents of Ternopil and is the largest taxpaying company in the area. If we take into consideration that average family consists of three members, it will turn out that over million of Ukrainians each day consume goods produced by “Molokiya”. The factory is also the biggest tax payer in local budget and provides jobs for over thousand employees in Ternopil.

The high quality of Molokiya dairy products is ensured by the quality of raw goods received from local farmers. Freshly drawn cow milk goes into a special vessel where it is chilled to a temperature of less than 4°C. The milk is then tested by an ultrasonic analyser and purified by a special German device known as a ‘bactofuge’. Molokiya is Ukraine’s first factory and Europe’s fifth to use FreshMilk milk purification technology.

This cutting-edge equipment ensures that a mechanical process cleans the milk of 99% of bacteria and germs, which allows for the process of light pasteurisation (temperature lower than 80°C) instead of the more common 85°C pasteurisation. Known for its content and organoleptic qualities, FreshMilk tastes very similar to freshly drawn milk. All Molokiya products – over 50 of them – are made with FreshMilk, which is what gives them their unique tastes and health advantages. Molokiya actively works with German, Polish, Italian, and Danish companies and organises factory tours abroad for its employees to share their experiences and learn something new. The company is open to innovation and happy to share their own achievements with other Ukrainian dairy factories. This spring, the factory just finished its latest modernisation by becoming the first factory in Ukraine to introduce the innovative Pure-Pak Sense. This eco-friendly packaging consists of 75% cardboard that is easily folded to a smaller size in order to reduce the amount of rubbish. In addition, all Molokiya products recently received a new grass-green decoration that symbolises the freshness of the products as well as ‘milk drops’. The milk drops were photographed for the design usage and, due to variations in thickness, all have a different shape to make the design extra cool. Molokiya is a leader in the Ukrainian dairy industry by following the principles of cooperation with consumers, genuineness, high quality of goods, food safety, and the introduction of innovations.

"МОЛОКІЯ": ЧЕСНО, КОРИСНО, СМАЧНО ПрАТ “Тернопільський молокозавод” почав свою виробничу історію майже 60 років тому. У 1999 році завод очолив Віталій Ковальчук, що не лише зберіг підприємство, але й поставив виробництво на високий сучасний технологічний рівень. Тоді в Україні з’явилася торгова марка “Молокія”, що на сьогодні є одним з лідерів на вітчизняному ринку свіжої молочної продукції. Серед понад 200 молокозаводів країни “Молокія” впевнено тримається у десятці з переробки сирого молока. Його щодня тут переробляють до 350 тонн. Завод – п’ятий в Україні із виробництва питного молока. Приблизно 400 тис. упаковок щоденно розвозять у торговельні заклади 14 областей. Якщо взяти до уваги, що середньостатистична родина – це три особи, то понад мільйон українців щоденно споживають продукцію “Молокія”. Підприємство – найбільший платник податківдо місцевого бюджету та роботодавець (працює тут понад тисяча осіб) у Тернополі.

Цієї весни завод завершив черговий етап модернізації. Тепер “Молокія” свою продукцію виробляє на найсучаснішому обладнанні, за найбільш м’якими температурними режимами в інноваційній упаковці Pure-Pak Sense. Її в Україні поки що не використовує жоден з молочних виробників. Така упаковка більш екологічна порівняно з попередньою, на 75% складається з картону та легко складається до мініатюрних розмірів (інструкція на упаковці), що дає змогу зменшити обсяг відходів. Продукція марки “Молокія” отримала й нове оформлення. У дизайні переважають зелені (трав’яні) відтінки, які у першу чергу символізують свіжість продукту. "COLLECTION" ART EXHIBITION Lviv’s Art Palace launched the ‘Collection’ exhibition on 26 April, featuring works from the private collections of Petro Bagriy and Mykhaylo Kuchirka. The famed Ukrainian art collectors are also the founders of the Artania art foundation that promotes Ukrainian art and artists abroad. The exhibition is one of the most extraordinary artistic events of the Western Ukrainian capital’s cultural life as it features works by many of Ukraine’s most renowned artists – Borys Burak, Mykhaylo Demtsyu, Oleksandr Gnylytskiy, Lyubomyr Medvid, and Arsen Savadov, among many others. While the exhibition has over 1000 pieces, Leopolitans and guests of the city will have access to just 44 works by painters from Lviv, Kyiv, Ternopil, Kharkiv, and Odesa. This unique exhibition will introduce art lovers to the various schools of Ukrainian art while also supporting contemporary Ukrainian art and artists. The exhibition will run until 26 May at Lviv’s Art Palace (17 Kopernyka St.).

The inner yard of Lviv City Council on Rynok Square, and other locations around the city, played host to Lviv’s popular Flugery Lvova International Jazz & Folk Music Festival from 29 April to 1 May. Now in its 15th year, the event has become something of a Lviv landmark that gives the stage to beginner and prominent jazz bands alike. Over 280 bands have performed over the years, attracting more than 100,000 Leopolitan music fans and guests of the city to the splendid atmosphere and great music.

This year over 15 bands took the stage representing a wide range of musical genres – jazz, blues, rock, indie, reggae, electronic, and even experimental music. Among the highlights of the festival were the performances by Ireland’s Yurodny world-music band, Poland’s Siostry Lotry, Hungary’s Flop, and Ukraine’s-own QARPA. The traditional ‘Awakening Concert’ took place on 30 April and delighted eventgoers with a memorable performance by Sasha Koltsova and the Krykhitka band.

ФЛЮГЕРИ ЛЬВОВА 2017 У внутрішньому подвір’ї львівської Ратуші, а також на інших майданчиках по всьому місту з 29 квітня по 1 травня пройшов міжнародний фестиваль джаз і фолк музики "Флюгери Львова". Фестиваль проводиться вже 15 років поспіль і став знаковою подією як для початківців, так і для відомих джазових колективів. Понад 280 колективів виступили на фестивалі впродовж багатьох років, і понад 100000 львів’ян та гостей міста насолоджувались чудовою атмосферою і класною музикою. Цього року 15 гуртів виходили на сцену, представляючи широкий спектр музичних жанрів – джаз, блюз, рок, інді, реггі, електронну, і навіть експериментальну музику. Серед родзинок фестивалю були виступи ансамблю світової музики Yurodny з Ірландії, Siostry Łotry p Польщі, Flop з Угорщини і Qarpa з України. Традиційний "Концерт пробудження" відбувся 30 квітня і запам’ятався слухачам виступом Саші Кольцової і гурту "Крихітка".

The Cabinet of Ministers under the leadership of Volodymyr Groisman started its work a year ago. This period was very rich in events and reforms. Many important results have been achieved.

At the same time, there are still many tasks remaining on the government’s to-do list So, what has been done and what issues are still outstanding? The EBA experts analysed the work of the Cabinet and identified the main technical issues for the Prime Minister and his team.

RETAIL, CONSUMER ELECTRONICS For a long time the Association maintained a position for cancellation of state regulation for prices and socially important food products – and these initiatives were finally completed in the framework of a pilot project. Now we are waiting for total cancellation of such regulations. The business community also welcomes the implementation of obligatory use of cash registers, including for payers of the single tax in selling consumer electronics which need warranty repair. Moreover, a huge issue for several industries is illegal online trading.

Companies that produce and import alcohol products also suffer from this problem.

HEALTHCARE One more important achievement this year was the launch of major work on reforming the healthcare sphere and realisation of certain steps in making medicines more available.

Namely, this refers to the program for refund of medicines to patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases, bronchial asthma and type II diabetes. Among the issues, which still need action include solution of the problem with implementation of a renewed National list of medicines and guaranteed standard pace of medicines procurement; guarantee of effective cooperation with the professional community for further development of reimbursement processes and rational use of state budget costs; cancellation of VAT for operations importing medicines for clinical trials and implementing the single tax rate for import and supply of medicines.

AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES TAXATION AND CUSTOMS Among the main achievements of the current government, business considers a dozen tax and customs innovations aimed at simplifying doing business in Ukraine. These include the new transparent mechanism of VAT refunds which was launched; the process of establishing the Service on Financial Investigations started; the “Single window” system at customs was also launched. Simultaneously, companies note that there is a lack of effectiveness with this system and insist on its further improvement.

LOGISTICS Key infrastructure achievements of the year – avoidance of port administrative cost increase; creation of a special Road fund of Ukraine; the opportunity for limitation of critical size of liability for carriers and ferries. At the same time, business points out the problems with railway cargo traffic in terms of security. One more important question in this field is verification of port costs rates as well as the quality of roads for automobiles.

A positive change for agricultural business, particularly in the grain sector, was the abolition of the ban on blending export grains of different classes, which will allow to optimise grain infrastructure. However, certain problems remain unsolved in the agrochemical sector, namely the inability of cross-border transportation of obsolete pesticides for further disposal; complicated procedure for approval of hygienic standards and regulations of safe application of pesticides. Also, there are a number of unsettled issues in the forestry sector – elaboration of a development strategy for the forestry industry of Ukraine; introducing effective and transparent timber measurement for all permanent forest users; creating an effective and transparent system of unprocessed timber sales and ensuring effective control over its implementation. The EBA expresses gratitude to the Cabinet of Ministers for a productive year and their willingness to listen to businesses’ opinions while making important government decisions. We would like to take this opportunity to draw the Government’s attention to pressing issues facing the business community that require a prompt response and we hope to speed up reforms and enhance the business climate in the nearest future.

EBA AD HOC MEETING From April 1, 2017 according to Article #201.16 of the Tax Code the system of tax bills / payments adjustments, registration termination started its work in a testing mode.

Anton Podilchak, Advice Group Managing Partner and Ivan Durkach, Advice Group Lawyer informed the participants about the criteria for evaluating the risk for termination of tax bill registration in Unified Register of Tax Bills and then a number of proposals for improving of this legal provision were drafted by the participants.

EBA LEGAL AND HR COMMITTEE "In order not to be afraid of HR audit from the appropriate regulatory authorities, company should always keep its HR documentation in order and check the coherence between different kinds of such documents beforehand and systematically”.

This was one of the suggestions from Tatiana Feschuk, Senior HR Consultant of Mazars Ukraine at a joint Legal and HR Committee Meeting on HR Audit and ways of preventing penalties.

EBA SQUASH TOURNAMENT WITH SPORTLIFE What to do in the sunny morning, when its +21C outside? Definitely, spend your time actively with colleagues. Thus, on 1 April participants of the mutual project of the Association and Sport Life in earnest were competing for winning places in the EBA Squash Tournament 2017. 16 representatives of EBA member companies took part in the Tournament. They trained for two weeks and, eventually, were playing in two leagues: men’s and women’s.

Men’s League, in turn, was divided into groups of beginners and amateurs.

Dear Martin, Please be informed about the following: on March 23, 2017 the Parliament of Ukraine in second hearing adopted the Law No. 4470 “On Amendments to Some Legislative Acts of Ukraine regarding Corporate Agreements” (the “Law”), which is to be signed by President. Adoption of this Law is indeed a huge step towards more effective corporate governance in Ukraine. Prior to adoption of this Law shareholders in limited liability companies or joint stock companies had no possibility to conclude shareholders’ agreements with an effective contractual constructions, typically used in corporate agreements in foreign jurisdictions.

Namely the Law provides the possibility of using the following instruments in shareholders’ agreements: • Deadlock resolution: the parties may prescribe the solutions for the situations when neither one of shareholders has the possibility to approve decisions without voting of another shareholder which is against such approval. The parties of agreement will be able to choose the scheme of solution which they seem the most convenient for them.

• Rules of the share transfer may be prescribed in shareholders agreements: lock up period, drag along, tag along, right of first offer, right of first refusal, involuntary transfer event, etc.

• Irrevocable power of attorney: such document gives the right to the shareholder in whose favor the shares are to be alienated to conduct all necessary actions on such alienation on behalf of another shareholder. Such power of attorney shall be notarized and will become invalid once the aim of it is reached • Obligations to vote in the prescribed manner specified in the agreement or abstain from voting on certain matters at the general meeting. Such manner may also prescribe a reserved matters voting – requirement to vote for all of the shareholders, such mechanism may be aimed at the protection of minority shareholders.

• Option constructions: parties may agree on acquisition or disposal of shares at a pre-arranged price and upon occurrence of pre-determined circumstances The procedure of the state registration of the property is defined in the Law of Ukraine “On state registration of the proprietary rights on the real estate and their encumbrances” as well as in the Resolution of the Cabinet of Minister of Ukraine of 25.12.2015 No. 1127 “On state registration of the proprietary rights on the real estate and their encumbrances”. According to the mentioned acts, state registration of the ownership of the property may be conducted by any state registrar within the corresponding region (including notary).

The list of documents to be submitted to the state registrar for the state registration is defined in the above mentioned acts and includes the certificate, technical passport, document confirming the assignment of the address etc.

Speedway: National Championship The first stage of the 2017 Open Individual Speedway National Championship started on April 18th in Chervonohrad. The event drew some of the fastest drivers from Ukraine alongside their Polish, Italian, and Argentinian competitors. Ukraine’s Oleksandr Loktayev finished ahead of Poland’s Dawid Stachyra and compatriot Stanislav Melnichuk to win the race. The competition features 20 different races.

Lviv’s April Athlete of the Month: Anastasia Wozniak Lvivyanka Anastasia Wozniak was awarded Lviv’s Athlete of the Month for April based on her performance as part of the Ukrainian rhythmic gymnastic team at the World Cup in Tashkent, Uzbekistan last month. Wozniak was part of the team that brought home the silver in the skipping rope / balls event and bronze in the five hoops event. The 18-year-old student cracked the 2016 Ukrainian Olympic team that finished 7th at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil. Lviv Today congratulates Ms. Wozniak and wishes her continued success in her already remarkable career.

1 етап національного чемпіонату Перший етап Національного відкритого чемпіонату 2017 року в індивідуальному заліку зі спідвею стартував 18 квітня в Червонограді. У заході, що складався із 20 заїздів, взяли участь деякі з найшвидших мотоциклістів України разом зі своїми польськими, італійськими та аргентинськими колегами. Українець Олександр Локтаєв фінішував першим, випередивши представника Польщі Давида Стахира і співвітчизника Станіслава Мельничука.

Львів’янка Анастасія Возняк був визнана спортсменкою квітня за її виступ у складі збірної України з художньої гімнастики на чемпіонаті світу в Ташкенті минулого місяця. Анастасія також була членом команди, яка здобула друге місце у вправах зі скакалкою/м’ячем і третє – у вправах з п'ятьма обручами. У 2016 році А. Возняк, тоді ще 18-річна студентка, входила до складу української збірної, яка зайняла 7 місце на Олімпійських іграх в Ріо де Жанейро. Lviv Today вітає Анастасію Возняк і бажає їй подальших успіхів у її спортивній кар'єрі.

Volleyball: Lviv sees silver at National Volleyball Championship Lviv’s Barcom-Kazhany volleyball team finished second at the National Volleyball Championship. The home squad fell in the dramatic and emotional final to Kharkiv’s Lokomotyv in four sets (22:25, 25:20, 28:26, 26:24). Since its formation in 2009, Barcom-Kazhany has also captured the Ukrainian Super Cup in 2016 and the Ukrainian Cup in 2017. For now, the Lviv players will have to be happy with their silver medals; but wait until next year, when the team has its sights set on its first National Championship.

Handball: Lviv’s Halychanka Ukrainian Handball Champs Lviv’s Halychanka women’s handball team capped off another remarkable season this month by defeating Kherson’s Dnipryanka and Uzhhorod’s Karpaty. Their superior play easily allowed the ladies to capture the Ukrainian Super League Championship on the third time. Our Halychanka have developed quite a dedicated following over the last few years and their fans, and Leopolitan sports lovers of all stripes, congratulate the girls on their incredible achievements.

У фінальному поєдинку львів’яни поступились лише після запеклої боротьби на майданчику проти команди "Локомотив" з Харкова в чотирьох партіях (22:25 25:20, 28:26, 26:24). З часу свого утворення у 2009 році, команда "Барком-Кажани" вже завойовувала український Суперкубок у 2016 році і Кубок України – у 2017. Наші волейболісти радіють срібним медалям та починають збирати сили для того, щоб перемогти усіх суперників і здобути золото наступного року.

Львівська жіноча гандбольна команда "Галичанка" увінчала перемогами ще один чудовий сезон, перемігши цього місяця своїх основних суперниць – команди "Дніпрянка" з Херсона і "Карпати" з Ужгорода. Потужна і досконала гра легко дозволила нашим гандболісткам стати три разовими чемпіонками української Суперліги. Дівчата з "Галичанки" останні кілька років грають рішуче й переконливо, їх майстерність зростає просто на очах їх прихильників. Всі львівські любителі спорту, а також наша редакція вітають "Галичанок" з їх чудовим досягненням.

ain diminishes life quality and is the main reason why most of the people visit doctors. There is a great deal of responsibility laid on the medical staff as they have to interpret correctly manifestations of a disease in order to define character of health problem and ways of its treatment.

“Center of physical rehabilitation “Innovo” (translated from Latin as “renovation”) was founded in 2009. In 2014 the center received medical license and started providing services as “Physical therapy and pain management center” in both children’s and grown-ups departments. The main goal of the center is to contribute to the improvement of people’s life quality and physical condition.
