Ukraine Gains Visa−Free EU Access: Historic post-Soviet breakthrough as Ukraine ends decades of international isolation

visa requirements faced a long and often intrusive application process with no guarantee of eventual success. Visa-free EU access marks an end to this extended period in the post-Soviet wilderness, making it hugely symbolic for all Ukrainians.

Ukraine celebrated the beginning of visa-free travel to the European Union’s Schengen Zone 10 June with a gala concert in the heart of Kyiv. Fittingly, festivities took place just yards from Maidan Nezolezhnosti – the scene of the Euromaidan Revolution that set the country on the road to greater European integration just three years earlier. In his official address to the crowds in central Kyiv, President Poroshenko said the country’s visa-free breakthrough marked Ukraine’s final break with the Soviet past and return to the European family of nations.

This symbolism comes together with numerous very practical advantages. As well as the obvious tourism convenience of visa-free EU travel, Ukrainian business people will now be able to visit industry events and schedule meetings with potential European partners without having to go through the considerable effort and expense of applying for EU visas. The difficulties in travelling to EU member states has previously served as a considerable barrier to greater business bridges between Ukrainian and EU companies. Thanks to visa liberalization, the Ukrainian business community will now be in a much better position to make the most of the opportunities presented by the free trade components of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.

For most ordinary Ukrainians, visa-free EU travel is the single most tangible result to come from the 2013-14 Euromaidan Revolution and the biggest breakthrough in EU relations since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukrainians have remained isolated from the rest of Europe by a visa barrier that prevented many from travelling outside of the former Soviet Empire. Even the relatively few Ukrainians who could meet EU

exchanges, leading many to predict a coming golden age in Ukraine-EU communication. Ukraine’s relative unfamiliarity with the realities inside the EU had previously left the population vulnerable to Russian information attacks and fake news campaigns seeking to sully perceptions of the European Union and take the shine off Ukraine’s European ambitions. Greater exposure to the EU will now help to counter the threat posed by Kremlin disinformation and allow Ukrainians to judge the relative merits of EU standards for themselves. Ukrainians are currently rushing to secure the biometric passports necessary to take advantage of visa-free travel, with airlines bracing for a surge in demand on EU routes. Budget carrier Ryanair has already unveiled plans to start flight services from Kyiv and Lviv to a range of EU destinations beginning in September. K&K PHILHARMONIKER JUBILEE CONCERT 29 June at 19:00 at the S. Ludkevich Philharmonic Concert Hall (7 Chaykoyskoho St.) Ukrainian-Austrian symphonic orchestra K&K Philharmoniker invites Leopolitan musical lovers and guests of the city to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the group with a special jubilee concert at the S. Ludkevich Philharmonic Concert Hall on 29 June. Under the bouncing baton of charismatic conductor Mathhias Kendlinger, the show will feature Mozart’s The Magical Flute, a philosophical

opera about the utopian world of goodness and wisdom and dark and light forces. Kendlinger, born in Austria in 1964, received his first accordion lesson at the age of 5. Later as composer and conductor he performed on stages across Europe until he founded the DaCapo music marketing firm in 1994. He then started his own symphony – the K&K Philharmoniker – in 2002 and the K&K Opera

Choir the following year. The symphony orchestra features 70 musicians and performs nearly 100 concerts across Europe each year. ‘SHOW PROMISE’ EXHIBITION Till July 16 at Lviv Art Palace (17 Kopernyka St.)

The Lviv Art Palace will be home to the Zenko Foundation’s ‘Show Promise’ exhibition beginning from 13 June. The show aims to erase the borders between reality and fiction, and to show that despite all the disturbances, the only constant thing is that human nature strives for a better future. The instability and collapse of plans and relationships that knock our feet out from under us opens more space for the immaterial – faith, nihilism, doubts, hopes, fears. In search for support in this shaky and unpredictable place is art – one of the most reliable and accurate instruments to serve as both a reflection of the past and an explorer of the future. Without laying the route along the strait, comfortable, predictable path, in art one can define the reference points.

The exhibition’s curators, Ihor Abramovych and Oleksandr Solovyov, will present Leopolitan art lovers and guests of the city with the works of many of Ukraine’s most cutting-edge artists. Експозиція прагне стерти кордони між реальністю та вигадкою і показати, що, незважаючи на всі потрясіння, єдиною постійною рисою людської натури є прагнення до кращого майбутнього. Нестабільність і крах планів та відносин, які вибивають грунт з-під наших ніг, відкриває більше простору для нематеріального – віри, нігілізму, сумнівів, надій, страхів. GLOBAL MUSIC DAY 21 June at venues and open-air stages around the city The Fête de la Musique, AKA ‘the worldwide celebration of music’, is an annual music festival that takes place each 21 June in cities around the world. Created back in 1982 by French Minister of Culture Jack Lang, the event has become an international phenomenon, celebrated in more than 740 cities in 116 countries around the world – including Ukraine. Fête de la Musique is a musical space that resonates all around the world. It’s an opportunity to listen to and play live music, an opportunity to perform in open areas such as streets and squares, and it’s a time for being an amateur, a professional, a fan, and simply a listener. LVIV ON A PLATE ART EXHIBITION 1–30 June at 1 Muzeina Square Decorative plates are a common travel souvenir all around the world. While plates are normally used for eating, some are actually created for decorative purposes. You can mount them on your wall or place them on a stand to display the beautiful artwork at your own home or office. Throughout June, Leopolitans and guests of the city will have the wonderful chance to visit the open-air Art Plate gallery that features the finest examples of locally-styled decorative plates by some of Lviv’s most renowned artists. Italian Cinema Week kicks off in Lviv – and across Ukraine – on 22 June. The program features films that participated in the prestigious Cannes, Venice, Berlin, and Tokyo film festivals. Classic Italian films from the 1970s were quite popular in Ukraine at the time and organisers hope to introduce Ukrainian audiences to modern Italian cinema in order to continue the tradition of cultural exchange between the two nations. Four films will be presented as part of the festival and all will be shown in their original language with subtitles. With 24 different teams from across the continent competing, Masters-Bet Eurofanz 2017 will be the largest event of its type in Europe. UKRAINIAN STREETBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP 8 July, location TBD Streetball, or street basketball, is a variation of basketball featuring significantly less formal structure and enforcement of the game’s rules and typically played on outdoor courts. This allows players to better display their individual talents. Considered an extension of hip-hop culture, streetball can even refer to other urban sports played on asphalt. It is particularly popular in larger cities, with some organising streetball programs similar to midnight basketball programs. Weekend-long tournaments are also held, and Lviv is no exception. The Ukrainian Streetball League Championship started in May and will see teams compete all summer in cities across Ukraine for the title in a number of events – men’s 3x3, junior, 1x1, and women’s. Leopolitan sports fans and guests of the city will want to mark 8 July on their calendars, as this is when the competition comes to the Western Ukrainian capital. The top 40 men’s teams, top 20 junior teams, top 16 1x1, and top 16 women’s teams will all qualify for the finals to be held in late August. early 100 musicians in the orchestra, about the same amount of concerts every year on Europe’s top stages, over 40 studio recordings, and thousands of fans eagerly awaiting their next live concert – that’s how best to describe the K&K Philharmoniker orchestra, founded in Lviv in 2002 by Austrian Matthias Georg Kendlinger. In addition to creating his own symphony orchestra, this Tyrolean native is its conductor and composer. With the stated goal of becoming one of Europe’s top orchestras, the K&K Philharmoniker touring schedule is planned nearly two years in advance. Tickets often sell out even when the group has two concerts on the same day, so it looks like the orchestra has nearly reached their goal! Lviv Today met up with Mr. Kendlinger to learn more about the man, his orchestra, and a new musical festival coming to Lviv very soon.

When did you start creating music and who influenced you in this decision? I created my first musical compositions at age 17. My father influenced me greatly, as he was an excellent accordion player himself. My grandfather also. I also learned a lot by listening to Tyrolean folk music.

Did you initially expect the K&K Philharmoniker orchestra to prove to be such a hit with international audiences? Yes, for sure I predicted that success! (smiles) Frankly speaking, I am very happy that we are successful and popular.

You work with many Ukrainian musicians. Has this helped you learn something new about Ukrainian culture? Sure, I’m constantly interested in Ukrainian music. I often listen to performances by Ukrainian choirs and travel around the country to discover something new again and again. Also, for me, a tremendous cultural experience comes through connection with people who listen to my music. As far as the Ukrainian musicians that I work with are concerned, this cooperation gives them quite a lot as well, as they gain European experience and personal development from the touring.

You are celebrating K&K Philharmoniker’s 15th anniversary with a special jubilee concert for Leopolitans on 29 June.

What was the idea behind the orchestra when you first started it in 2002? It wasn’t so easy to create the orchestra as I had no connections in Ukraine at the time and people were very sceptical about some Austrian that wanted to start his own orchestra here. Despite that, over 300 musicians came out for the first audition, of which we picked only 30. We conducted the second audition three months later and attracted 120 musicians – mostly Leopolitans, but also some from Kyiv, Ternopil, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa, Khmelnytsky, and Chernivtsi. Each year we conduct new auditions and each time we discover new musical talents.

As a musician that has performed all over the globe in some of the world’s most prestigious venues, have you noticed any interesting traits among the different audiences? Of course there are differences between concerts here and in Europe! The main difference is the quality of the acoustics in concert halls. That’s one thing that needs to become better in Ukraine. As far as audiences are concerned, people like what we do and listeners very eagerly attend our concerts in Europe and in Ukraine.

The Lviv event will be the very first concert performance of the show! From 13–15 July, there will be a new music festival in Lviv featuring my own compositions. Leopolitan classic music lovers will be delighted by performances from the K&K Philharmoniker, the K&K Symphoniker, the Ukrainian National Choir Lviv, and chamber ensembles under the guidance of Ukrainian and foreign conductors. In the next few years, we hope to expand the duration of the festival to 7–10 days as I continue to write music. Our main goal is the continued development of skills, the enlargement of the existing orchestra, and the introduction of new musical programs.

When you first visited Lviv, what impressions did the city make on you? My first impression was a great surprise – I felt as though I was at home, as if I’d already visited this city some time ago.

Which piece of classical music best captures the essence of Lviv? It’s quite difficult to give a simple answer. But one thing I know for sure is that Lviv is a tonal city. In modern art, there is some trend to atonality, while

лизько сотні музикантів і стільки ж виступів щороку в найкращих залах Європи, 40 студійних записів і тисячі постійних слухачів, які з нетерпінням чекають концертів, щоб почути виконавців на живо. І все це оркестр K&K Philharmoniker, котрий 2002 року заснував у Львові австрієць Маттіас Георг Кендлінгер. Окрім заснування власного симфонічного оркестру, виходець з Тіролю М. Кендлінгер встиг зробити кар’єру успішного диригента і композитора. Розпочинаючи роботу у Львові Кендлінгер поставив собі за мету створити один із найкращих оркестрів Європи. Сьогодні розклад гастролей його K&K Philharmoniker розплановано на півтора року вперед, а квитки на концерти розкуповують заздалегідь навіть тоді, коли концерти проходять два рази поспіль в один день, отже на шляху до мети, виконано, напевно, всі 100% роботи. Журналісти Lviv Today зустрілись із Маттіасом в одному з львівських ресторанів, де композитор розповів про себе, свій оркестр та новий щорічний фестиваль у Львові.

Коли ви почали писати музику, і що або хто вплинув на це рішення? Свої перші твори я почав писати у 17 років. Великий вплив на мене мав мій батько – він грав на акордеоні, як і мій дідусь. Також багато чому я навчився, слухаючи тірольську народну музику.

Чи очікували ви, що музичний проект K&K Philharmoniker вийде на світовий рівень та стане міжнародним хітом? Так, я передбачав це (сміється)! Насправді, я дуже тішусь, що у нас все вдається і ми популярні. LVIV TODAY | June 2017

Ви успішно співпрацюєте з багатьма українськими музикантами, чи допоміг вам цей фактор відкрити для себе щось нове про українську культуру? Так, я постійно цікавлюсь українською музикою, слухаю багато виступів українських хорів, також багато подорожую Україною і відкриваю її для себе знов і знов. Також для мене величезним культурним досвідом є зв'язок з людьми, які слухають мою музику. Щодо українських музикантів, що співпрацюють зі мною, то думаю, що це дає їм також чимало – вони переймають європейський досвід і розвиваються особистісно.

Цього року оркестр K&K Philharmoniker святкує 15-річчя та потішить львів’ян ювілейним концертом, який відбудеться 29 червня. А як все відбувалось, коли ви вирішили створити оркестр у 2002 році? Створити оркестр було непросто, адже я нікого не знав в Україні, і всі скептично ставились до невідомого австрійця, що хоче заснувати оркестр. Але, незважаючи на це, на перші прослуховування прийшло понад 300 музикантів, з яких ми обрали 30. Через 3 місяці відбувся наступний відбір, та прийшло 120 осіб. В основному наш склад – це львів’яни, а також музиканти з Києва, Тернополя, Одеси, Харкова, Дніпра, Хмельницького, Чернівців та інших міст України. Ми щороку проводимо додаткові прослуховування й щоразу відкриваємо для себе нові таланти.

Як музикант, який гастролює цілим світом та виступав на найпрестижніших музичних сценах, скажіть чи відчувається різниця у сприйнятті слухачами? Звісно є різниця між концертами тут і в Європі. Й головна відмінність – це якість акустики у залах. Це те, до чого потрібно йти і що покращувати в Україні. А щодо публіки – то їй подобається

те, що ми робимо, й глядачі охоче відвідують наші концерти як в Європі, так і в Україні.

Розкажіть трохи більше про нові музичні проекти 2017 року, особливо про фестиваль, який відбудеться у Львові у липні. Новим нашим музичним проектом є концертне виконання “Чарівної флейти” Моцарта, що відбудеться 29 червня у Львові, 6 грудня в Кьольні, 7 грудня в Берліні – це перше концертне виконання опери “Чарівна флейта” у Львові. Також 13–15 липня у Львові вперше відбудеться Фестиваль музики, на якому звучатимуть мої власні твори. Для шанувальників класичної музики на різних сценах виступатимуть артисти симфонічних оркестрів K&K Philharmoniker, K&K Symphoniker, Українського національного хору Львів, камерних ансамблів під керівництвом українських та зарубіжних диригентів. В наступні роки ми плануємо збільшити тривалість фестивалю до 7–10 днів, і я продовжуватиму писати музику. Наша мета – безперервно розвивати майстерність, збільшувати оркестри та створювати нові програми.

Коли ви вперше відвідали Львів, яке враження на вас справило це місто? Це було великою несподіванкою для мене: перші відчуття були, ніби я вдома. Або ніби я вже був в цьому місті до того.

Який класичний музичний твір найкраще передає дух Львова? Важко відповісти однозначно. Але єдине, що я знаю напевне, що це абсолютно тональне місто. В сучасному мистецтві є тенденції до атональності, але

Triumph of Elegancy & Style The venue boasts of books everywhere – on shelves, in alcoves, as wall decorations – even the stairs feature book covers! Except for the cage lamps, all of the interior elements, such as the furniture, forged units, and decors, were made right here in Ukraine, so you can proudly call ‘CABINET’ a completely made-in-Ukraine product. Kostyshyn sees the project as extremely important as it is located in the historical part of the city across from the famous Hlyniany Gate. Studio’s client was eager to create the best confectionary in Lviv, which will feature the glorious spirit of the end of 19th-beginning of 20th centuries, when Lviv was the fifth most important city in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire right after Vienna, Budapest, Trieste and Praha.

The ARSIDEA Design Studio is well known in Ukraine as it has worked on over 150 projects since its inception in 2004. This creative studio is also a winner of one of the most prestigious international contests – the International Property Awards, which took place in London in November 2016.

One of the ARSIDEA studio's newest projects is the luxurious STARFIT sports complex in Vynnyky. The complex features a modern gym with Panatta fitness equipment and Intensa cardio exercisers. The spectacular swimming pool has three levels of water purification alongside a wading pool, huge Jacuzzi, and three saunas. You can take boxing, fighting, and MMA training at the centre, which also has its own squash court, pool bar, and sports bar with cool drinks and a Wi-Fi zone. For the little ones, there are specialised sports groups and entertainment programs. This awesome sports facility was built primarily for locals, but as noted by project investor Hryhoriy Kozlovskyi, “I hope to see future Olympic champions be brought up here!”

Lviv’s ARSIDEA interior and architectural design, under the guidance of Arsen Kostyshyn, was recently awarded first prize in the “interior of a public premises” competition at the INTERIUM 2017 international interior design contest for their ‘CABINET’ project located at 12 Vynnychenko St. in Lviv. Theming the venue as a reading room was simple as the mansion oozes with the aura of old and new books. Working together with architects and constructors, ARSIDEA helped modernise the venue with a shining splendour thanks to the spectacular new design and numerous additions to the décor, like cage lamps, books, and candleholders.

Останнім з реалізованих об'єктів компанії ARSIDEA є Cпорткомплекс STARFIT у Винниках. Його тренажерний зал обладнаний тренажерами фірми Panatta та кардіотренажерами Intensa. THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF THE DNIESTER CANYON The Dniester Canyon is a picturesque area of the Dniester River Valley, located between the Zolota Lypa and Zbruch Rivers. Known for the steep slopes that hang over it, the river meanders along the route, never knowing which way to curve. The 100-200 m valley is framed by long wall of cliffs stretch along the left bank that sees a number of unique natural formations, including the 500 million year old fossilised remains of flora and fauna and ancient rock deposits. Some cliffs resemble cheese, thanks to the large number of mysterious caves that pierce them. According to legend, pagan altars were placed there, and later hermit monks occupied the spaces. Amazingly beautiful waterfalls make the Dniester Canyon inimitably charming. They join the river below by falling from mountain streams high above. he positive vibes among international visitors to the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv confirmed once again that people who actually come to Ukraine tend to be very pleasantly surprised. This favorable reaction is partly due to the low expectations most first-time visitors to Ukraine bring with them. They generally expect to find a drab and dreary nation wallowing in poverty and, for the past few years at least, ravaged by war. These unwelcome recent associations with armed conflict have joined a long list of negative stereotypes that serve to undermine Ukraine’s international image, including everything from the Chornobyl disaster to sex tourism.

high and bid for the right to stage top tier events like Formula 1, the football World Cup and the Olympic Games. This may sound somewhat fantastical, but doubters would do well to remember that Ukraine successfully co-hosted the UEFA European Championships just five years ago. Kyiv certainly has many of the natural attributes for a spectacular Summer Olympics, with water sports events on the Dnipro River serving as a particularly attractive option. Meanwhile, a Winter Olympics in the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains would do wonders for the region’s profile as a winter holiday destination while also improving infrastructure.

As Eurovision amply demonstrated, the best way to beat these clichés is to let people see for themselves. The song contest sparked a flurry of enthusiastic international press reports about Kyiv, with gushing tourism articles appearing everywhere from CNN and British tabloid newspapers to the hipster press. Taken together, this media blitz represented the most intensive blast of positive Kyiv coverage in living memory.

A Ukrainian World Cup is certainly an enticing prospect but it would have to wait until the final settlement of the ongoing hybrid war with Russia. Donetsk would be an obvious host city, much as it was during Euro 2012, while Dnipro, Odesa, Lviv, Kyiv, and Kharkiv would all be strong candidates to stage World Cup ties. Luckily, Kyiv will be able to test itself out as a leading football destination in spring 2018 when the city plays host to the UEFA Champions League Final. This prestige game will attract tens of thousands of visitors including a glittering array of VIPs and the global sporting media, making it the perfect opportunity to highlight Kyiv’s credentials as a major sporting destination.

Ukraine should now seek to build on the success of Eurovision by hosting further attention-grabbing international events that will bring foreign visitors and the international media to the country in large numbers. Ideally, Ukraine should aim

Hosting international events is an expensive undertaking, but it is arguably a better investment than equally costly advertising campaigns and other PR initiatives designed to improve unfavorable international perceptions of Ukraine. Investing in the country’s branding is a long overdue and crucial element in the struggle to attract international investment. Ukraine largely neglected the image issue for the past twenty-five years and is now living with the results of this neglect. The country’s low international profile left Ukraine uniquely vulnerable to Russian information attacks and unable to establish effective counter-narratives of its own. Even now, after three years of unprecedented international media coverage of Ukraine, the amount of factually inaccurate and outright false information published about the country remains staggering and deeply depressing. The event host route to better international perceptions of Ukraine also fits well with the country’s love of public holidays and the general readiness to engage in frenzied preparations that Ukrainians inherited from the Soviet past. Most of the major renovation and construction projects of the past twenty-five years have featured schedules designed to coincide with a particular anniversary or public holiday such Independence Day. This has proven an effective approach, providing the clarity of clear guidelines and non-negotiable deadlines.

V LVIV MEDIA FORUM

Arena Lviv was home to a spectacular 3-day media event packed with numerous speeches, public talks, and thematic streams, when the Lviv Media Forum came to town from 2527 May. With the overarching theme of “Search(wait)ing for new algorithms – media in the post-truth era”, the event attracted over 800 journalists, bloggers, experts, analysts, media managers, and students, including nearly 100 representatives from around the world. Some of the more well-known participants included: Polish documentary star Hanna Polak; British journalism professor George Brock; famed Georgian journalist Nino Ivanishvili, American foreign affairs journalist Michael Weiss, and Newsweek Polska editor-in-chief Tomasz Lis. Other notable attendees included Romanian investigator Paul Radu, Financial Times editor Tony Barber, and Russian journalist Elena Kostyuchenko. New this year was a public talk where Ukrainian journalists and experts interviewed a panel consisting of: Michael Weiss, the co-author of worldwide bestseller ‘ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror’; Katarzyna Kwiatkowska-Moskalewicz, the author of ‘To Kill the Dragon: Ukrainian Revolutions’; and Oleksandr Tkachenko, CEO of 1+1 Media. The event’s hectic program featured several streams, such as Investigations, Business Journalism, Media Management, Digital Journalism, Reporting, Storytelling, Cultural Journalism, and Regional Media. The Oleksandr Kryvenko Award was given to hromadske.ua co-founder and anchor at UA: Pershiy Channel Roman Vintoniv, while Ukrainian poet and public figure Boris Khersonsky gave the Freedom Lecture. Some of the event’s highlights included the screening of Polak’s ‘Something Better to Come’, the presentation of the ‘Mediadriver’ online tutorial – a media literacy tool for students, the minority rights panel, and the data journalism workshop provided by TEXTY.ORG.UA.

ЛЬВІВСЬКИЙ МЕДІА ФОРУМ На стадіоні ”Арена Львів” 25-27 травня пройшов V Медіа Форум з численними промовами, публічними виступами і тематичними потоками. Форум, з головною темою ”Шу(че)каємо нові алгоритми. Медіа в епоху постправди”, зібрав понад 800 журналістів, блогерів, експертів, аналітиків, менеджерів засобів масової інформації та студентів, в тому числі близько 100 представників зарубіжних країн. Серед найбільш відомих учасників були, зокрема: зірка польської документалістики Ханна Полак; британський професор журналістики Джордж Брок; відома грузинська журналістка Ніно Іванішвілі, американський журналіст-міжнародник Майкл Вайс, і головний редактор Newsweek Polska Томаш Ліс. Також мали слово румунський дослідник Пол Раду, редактор Financial Times Тоні Барбер, і російська журналістка Єлєна Костюченко. UKRAINE IS EUROPE’S SHIELD Lviv’s Armour Vehicle Factory played host to very special ‘Ukraine is Europe’s Shield” event – dedicated to the celebration of Europe Day – on 25 May. The event featured a colourful and varied program that presented Leopolitans and guests of the city with the latest achievements of the factory – a caterpillar-tracked firefighting vehicle and modernised armoured vehicles created especially for use in the ATO zone. The event attracted over 350 guests including EU Delegation to Ukraine Head Hugh Mingarelli, Ukraine Vice-PM for Euro-Atlantic Integration Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Lviv State Administration Head Oleh Synutka, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, and ATO soldiers. The vocal talents of Pavlo Tabakov, Iryna Dolya, and Lilya Vavryn highlighted the event. Many other artists performed, including opera soloists Oleh Lyhach, Petro Radeyko, Vasyl Panayda, and Oleh Lanovyi, the Galician Academic Choir, the INSO-Lviv orchestra, the Dudaryk male choir, the Hetman P. Sahaidachny National Army Academy orchestra, Zhyttya ballet dancers, and artists from the Lviv National Opera. Special thanks goes to event organiser Vasyl Vovkun, the stage director, scriptwriter, former Minister of Culture and Tourism in Ukraine, and current General Director of the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre.

LVIV’S SPECTACULAR BALLET FESTIVAL Lviv’s National Academic Opera & Ballet Theatre was proud to play host to the Ballet Fest Choreography gala concert on 28 May. The project began at the beginning of the year and consisted of several stages where different choreographers and dancers competed against each other to be one of the 10 choreographers featured at the gala. Lviv’s Theatre of Opera & Ballet provided the dancers, while an all-star jury selected the winning dances. The jury featured the likes of Italian choreographer Marcello Algeri, Austrian choreographer Alex Ursulyak, Lviv National Opera General Director Vasyl Vovkun and Art Director Igor Khramov, and last year’s winner – Kyiv’s Artem Shosin. Kyiv choreographer Ksenya Ivanenko was the jury’s first choice at the gala, while Kyiv’s Anna Gerus and Svitlana Krukova finished second and third, respectively. Congratulations to all the winners! For Leopolitan ballet lovers and guests of the city that missed this wonderful concert, an encore performance will be held on 21 June at Lviv’s National Academic Opera & Ballet Theatre.

ФЕСТИВАЛЬ ХОРЕОГРАФІВ БАЛЕТ-ФЕСТ 2017 На сцені Львівського національного академічного театру опери та балету 28 травня відбувся заключний гала-концерт конкурсу хореографів “БАЛЕТ- ФЕСТ 2017”. Проект почався у січні і пройшов у кілька етапів, де різні хореографи й танцюристи змагались на сцені, щоб потрапити у десятку найкращих, які виступлять у гала-концерті. Усі постановки виконували артисти львівського театру опери, а оцінювало учасників міжнародне професійне журі, до складу якого увійшли Марчелло Алджері (Італія), Алекс Урсуляк (Австрія), генеральний директор Львівської опери Василь Вовкун, художній керівник цього ж театру Ігор Храмов та переможець минулорічного конкурсу Артем Шошин. Перше місце посіла хореограф з Києва Ксенія Іваненко, а ще дві киянки – Анна Герус і Світлана Крюкова – відповідно друге й і третє. Вітаємо всіх переможців! Для львівських любителів балету та гостей міста, яким не вдалось побачити цей чудовий концерт, виступ на біс відбудеться 21 червня у тому ж оперному театрі.

UKRAINE’S FIRST PET ADOPTION CENTRE

Currently the only place of its kind in Ukraine, it was opened thanks to the support of Leopolitan animal rescuers, volunteers, and the Lev public utility company. These are exciting times for every person that cares about animals in Lviv. As animal welfare takes a greater place in the consciousness of Ukrainian communities and legislatures, the city’s – and your – opportunity to enact meaningful change has increased dramatically! LEOPOLIS GRAND PRIX 2017 Lviv’s stunning summer vintage car festival – the Leopolis Grand Prix – drew over 200 retro cars from across Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Austria, Belarus, Italy, Estonia, Czech Republic as well as from USA to the city from 2-4 June. The seventh annual event since its resurrection attracted representatives from over 48 auto fan clubs from around the globe! The event featured the exciting Leopolis Grand Prix race around the famed “Lviv Triangle” (Vitovskoho St .-I.Franko St.- Stryjska St. & Maidan Heroes St.). Alongside the dynamic race, Leopolitan auto lovers and guests of the city were thrilled by an open-air exhibition of retro cars, a vintage car parade through Central Lviv, and special auto-themed contests like the Elegancy Competition. The original Leopolis Grand Prix was held in 1930.

LEOPOLIS GRAND PRIX 2017 На фестиваль Leopolis Grand Prix з 2 по 4 червня прибули понад 200 ретро-автомобілів з усієї України, а також з Польщі, Литви, Австрії, Білорусі, Італії, Естонії, Чехії і навіть зі США. У цьому щорічному заході, що проводиться вже всьоме після його відновлення, взяли участь представники понад 48 авто-фан-клубів з усього світу! Головною подією стали перегони на знаменитій із самого початку трасі "Львівський трикутник" (вул. Вітовського – I. Франка – Стрийська – Героїв Майдану). Окрім динамічних перегонів всі, хто завітав на фестиваль, могли полюбуватись ще й виставкою ретро-автомобілів під відкритим небом, парадом старовинних автомобілів, а також прийняти участь у різних конкурсах, як наприклад конкурс Елегантності серед водіїв та їх пасажирів. CRUISE COLLECTION BY ROKSOLANA BOGUTSKA Lviv’s ‘Lvivarnya’ museum-cultural complex was the host for the glamorous presentation of renowned Ukrainian fashion designer Roksolana Bogutska’s 2017 ‘Cruise Collection’ on 19 May. The collection features a colourful mix of modern trends and authentic Ukrainian ethnic motifs. The designer’s main inspiration – the basis for the collection’s cuts and prints – came from ancient Borschivska embroidery. All of Bogutska’s outfits are made from exclusive natural fabrics like silk, chiffon, and leather, while the stunning embroidery and handmade leathery wickerwork make her pieces truly works of art. Eventgoers admired the combination of folk patterns with modern twists that make Bogutska’s collections so wonderfully feminine, romantic, and elegant!

У представлених моделях барвисто поєднались сучасні тенденції та українські етнічні мотиви. Основним джерелом натхнення дизайнера для створення колекції стали елементи унікальної стародавньої Борщівської вишивки. Всі моделі одягу, створені фантазією Роксолани Богуцької, виконані з ексклюзивних натуральних тканин – шовку, шифону і шкіри, а приголомшлива вишивка і ручне плетіння зі шкіри зробили їх справжніми витворами мистецтва. Шанувальники творчості дизайнери були в захваті від поєднання народних візерунків з сучасним стилем, яке робить колекції Роксолани Богуцької на диво жіночними, романтичними і елегантними.

MISS LVIV 2017 Lviv’s landmark Opera and Ballet Theatre hosted the glitzy grand finale of the Miss Lviv 2017 beauty pageant on 8 June. The finals featured plenty of glamour including the dazzling contestants in eye-catching swimsuits and gorgeous evening gowns. While the young ladies were the main attraction, Leopolitans and guests of the city were also treated to wonderful music performances from Mariya Yaremchuk, Andriy Kishe, Ivan NAVI, Tayanna, and the marvelous Khrystyna Soloviy. Event hosts Volodymyr Andriyevskyi and Timur Miroshnichenko questioned the contestants, allowing the girls to display their charm and intellect, in addition to their beauty. Several hundred Leopolitan hopefuls showed up for casting, of which 14 of Lviv’s most spectacular young women were selected to compete in the finals. In the end, 17-year-old Iryna Tkachuk was named Miss Lviv 2017, while Yulia Matkovska and Marta Shevchuk were named Vice Miss and 2nd Vice Miss, respectively. The lovely Iryna Tkachuk will now represent Lviv at Miss Ukraine 2017 in Kyiv later this year.

МІС ЛЬВІВ 2017 На сцені львівського театру опери та балету 8 червня відбувся грандіозний фінал конкурсу краси "Міс Львів 2017". Публіка мала на що подивитись, зокрема, виступи учасниць в купальних костюмах і розкішних вечірніх сукнях. Програма конкурсу супроводжувалась виступами артистів Марії Яремчук, Андрія Кіше, Івана NAVI, Tayanna і Христини Соловій. Ведучі цього шоу Володимир Андрієвський і Тимур Мірошниченко ставили питання конкурсанткам, щоб ті могли якнайкраще показати свій шарм та інтелект, вже не кажучи про їх вроду. Кількасот львів’янок були присутні на кастингу, де вимогливе журі відібрало 14 найчарівніших дівчат для участі у гранд-фіналі. Звання "Міс Львів-2017" отримала 17-річна Ірина Ткачук, а Юлія Матковська і Марта Шевчук отримали звання віце-міс і 2 віце-міс, відповідно. According to Article 12 of the Law of Ukraine "On Foreign Investment" free and prompt remittance abroad of investor’s profits, revenues and other funds in foreign currency obtained legally as a result of foreign investment is guaranteed to foreign investors (after paying taxes and other mandatory payments). The procedure for the return of foreign investment and profits, revenues and other funds received by non-resident investor in Ukraine is prescribed with the Resolution of the National Bank of Ukraine (hereinafter – the "NBU") dated 10.08.2005 No. 280. However, in recent years, taking into account the political and economic situation in Ukraine, NBU introduced a number of restrictions including on the issues you are interested in. Thus, according to Article 19 of the NBU Resolution dated 03.03.2016 No. 140, it is prohibited to purchase and transfer the currency to return abroad foreign investments and dividend payments to investors. This prohibition does not apply to cases of sale/transfer of foreign currency for the returning abroad dividends on corporate rights for 2014-2016 years starting from 13 June 2016 under compliance of the certain conditions. Until recently, the NBU also prohibited the purchase, transfer of foreign currency to return abroad the funds received by foreign investors under the transactions of sale of corporate rights of the companies, reducing the charter capital, withdrawal of foreign investors from the companies. However, with the NBU Resolution dated 25.05.2017 No. 41 this prohibition was lifted. According to Article 19 of the NBU Resolution No.140, starting from 12 of June of 2017, it is allowed to purchase/ transfer foreign currency to return abroad the funds received by foreign investors under the transactions on sale of securities, corporate rights, funds received as a result of the reduction of the charter capital of the companies, withdrawal of the foreign investor from the companies.

Lviv’s May Athlete of the Month: Kateryna Kryva Lviv’s Kateryna Kryva has put the entire karate world on notice that she intends to be on top of the podium when karate makes its Olympic debut in Tokyo, Japan in 2020. In Izmir, Turkey, at the first European Championships to be held under Olympic status, Kryva won gold in the kumite under-50kg event. The 25-year-old was simply brilliant on her way to becoming a double European champion as she helped Ukraine triumph in the team competition. Kryva has been steadily improving her results since a 4th-place finish at the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2015. She picked up a bronze in the Karate Premiere League later that year and won silver at the first karate event with Olympic status in September 2016. Her dazzling performance in Turkey earned her not only the Lviv National Olympic Athlete of the Month honour, but she was also named Athlete of the Month by the Ukrainian Olympic Committee. Lviv Today congratulates her on her achievements and wishes her the best as she marches toward Tokyo 2020.

Триденні змагання зібрали 70 спортсменів з усієї Центральної Європи і Туреччини, а також найкращі команди Волинської та Львівської областей, збірну України, команди Львівського державного університету безпеки життєдіяльності, Українського Національного університету цивільного захисту і Черкаського інституту пожежної безпеки ім. Героїв Чорнобиля. У конкурсній програмі були такі дисципліни: сходження по штурмовій драбині на 4 поверх навчальної вежі, подолання 100-метрової смуги перешкод, естафета 4х100 метрів і бойове розгортання. Збірна команда України зайняла перше місце, а команди Києва та Волині – друге й третє відповідно. Вітаємо всіх учасників і переможців!

Fire-applied sport: 30th international competition in honour of the firefighting heroes of Chornobyl Lviv was host of the 30th international competition on fire-applied sport – in honour of the firefighting heroes of Chornobyl – from 24–26 May. The 3–day competition brought together 70 athletes from across Central Europe and Turkey, as well as top teams from the Volyn and Lviv oblasts, an all-Ukrainian team, the Lviv State University of Life Safety team, the Ukrainian National University of Civil Defence team, and a team from the Cherkasy Fire Safety Institute named after the Heroes of Chornobyl. The competition program featured events such as: climbing the hook ladder to the 4th floor window of a training tower, overcoming a 100-metre strip full of obstacles, a 4x100 metre fire relay race, and combat deployment. In the end, the all-Ukraine team took top honours, while Kyiv and Volyn finished in second and third respectively. Congratulations to all participants and to the winners!

Football: FC Karpaty: season's final results A trying season for Lviv’s Karpaty FC came to a merciful end last month as the team narrowly avoided relegation. The team sat in last place in the 12-team league for the first 20 weeks of the 32-week season and was the final team to secure a spot in the Premiere League next season. Karpaty had to fight uphill all year after being docked six points for debts to former midfielder Semir Stilic. Dnipro however, had 15 points deducted for failing to clear their debts with a former coach, meaning they were relegated instead. The boys in green and white finish the season with 9 wins and 9 draws in 32 matches. Karpaty will have a new rival next season after the relegation of traditional foe Volyn Lutsk. A new rivalry will likely be struck with Western-based Veres Rivne, who will make their return to the elite level for the first time in 22 years. Karpaty’s junior football team, on the other hand, had a season to remember after finishing 3rd in the U21 Championship behind Ukrainian powerhouse clubs Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv. The future looks bright for Karpaty, as the juniors finished with 17 wins and 6 draws in 32 games to finish ahead of nine teams.

Футбол: ФК "Карпати": підсумки сезону Напружений сезон для львівських "Карпат" нарешті завершився минулого місяця, і команда залишилась в лізі. Протягом перших 20 з 32 тижнів сезону "Карпати" посідали останнє місце серед 12 команд ліги і останніми забезпечили собі місце в наступному сезоні Прем'єр-ліги. "Карпатам" довелося докладати добрячих зусиль цілий рік після того, як їм зняли шість очок за борг перед колишнім півзахисником Семіром Стілічем. У команди "Дніпро", однак, зняли аж 15 очок за борги перед колишнім тренером, тобто вони вилетіли з Ліги. Зелено-білі завершили сезон з 9 перемогами і 9 нічиїми в 32 матчах. "Карпати" отримають нового суперника в наступному сезоні після вильоту традиційного противника "Волинь" Луцьк. Ним стане, ймовірно, команда "Верес" Рівне, яка повернулась на елітний рівень вперше за 22 роки. Команді юніорів "Карпати" минулий сезон запам'ятається почесним третім місцем в чемпіонаті U21 після таких потужних команд як "Шахтар" Донецьк і "Динамо" Київ. Майбутнє виглядає перспективним для юніорів "Карпат", які завершили турнір із 17 перемогами і 6 нічиїми в 32 поєдинках і залишили позаду дев'ятьох суперників.

Lviv’s Halychyna Sport Palace played host to the Foxtrot Cup 2017 international ballroom dance competition from 20–21 May. Organised with the support of the World Dance Sport Federation, the event drew over 800 dance couples from across Ukraine and Central and Eastern Europe. During the weekend, Ukraine held its national rating and qualified in the Latin and Standard competitions. Congrats to all the couples!

There is a great deal of responsibility laid on the medical staff as they have to interpret correctly manifestations of a disease in order to define character of health problem and ways of its treatment. “Center of physical rehabilitation “Innovo” (translated from Latin as “renovation”) was founded in 2009. In 2014 the center received medical license and started providing services as “Physical therapy and pain management center” in both children’s and grown-ups departments. The main goal of the center is to contribute to the improvement of people’s life quality and physical condition.
