IN LVIV LvivMozArt Festival 18–25 August at Theatres and Open-Air Stages around the city The spectacular LvivMozArt is a festival of classical music and opera and is the newest addition to Lviv’s busy festival scene. The festival is dedicated to the musical heritage of Mozart’s youngest son, Franz Xaver, who lived and worked in Lviv for 30 years (1808-38) and actively promoted music in the city. He was the founder of Lviv’s first music union, the St. Cecilia Choir Society, which put Lviv on the map alongside other European music centres. Leopolitans are proud that Franz Xaver Mozart is a part of the city’s history and to honour his legacy, are adding this innovative musical tradition as the newest chapter in the city’s rich musical heritage. As part of the festival’s programme, Leopolitan classical music lovers and guests of the city can enjoy concerts by famous European orchestras and opera singers. In addition to the concerts, the festival will offer a series of workshops and lectures for professional musicians, directors, actors, and people who work in classical music and theatre-related spheres. The programme includes events at Lviv’s Potocki Palace, Dominican Cathedral, St. George’s Cathedral, St. Peter & Paul Garrison Church, Phiharmonic Society Theatre, Opera House, Rynok Square, Art Palace, and even at the Tram Depot. As it was mentioned by the festival’s art director Oksana Lyniv: “It will be an art project uniting top musicians from Ukraine and all over the world”. Lyniv, who left Lviv to become the General Music Director at the Graz Opera in Austria, intends to make LvivMozArt an annual festival. TUSTAN MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL 4–6 August at Tustan Fortress in the village of Uruch in the Skole region The Tustan Fortress, located in the village of Urich, has a special historical aura and has always been a link to Ukraine’s past. So it’s no wonder that back in 2006 one of Ukraine’s most successful medieval festivals was launched here. This year’s Tustan Medieval Festival will take place from 4–6 August and will offer visitors a rich and informative programme on Ukrainian medieval culture while honouring its heroic past. Festivalgoers will be able to enjoy many colourful events throughout the festival, including workshops in archery, dancing, medieval instruments, and ancient folk crafts such as blacksmithing, clay sculpting, weaving, and horse riding. Feel the excitement of knights’ tournaments by taking in fight re-enactments from the 9th to 18th Centuries, thanks to some of Ukraine’s most innovative re-enactment societies. BOYKIVSKY FESTYNY ETHNO-FEST 2–6 August in the village of Yavora

СЕРЕДНЬОВІЧНИЙ ФЕСТИВАЛЬ ТУСТАНЬ 4–6 серпня, Фортеця Тустань, с. Урич, Сколівський р-н Фортеця Тустань, яка знаходиться в карпатському селі Урич, має особливу історичну ауру і завжди нагадувала про славне минуле України. Цілком закономірно, що саме тут в 2006 році розпочався один із найуспішніших середньовічних фестивалів України. Цьогорічний фестиваль "Тустань" відбудеться 4–6 серпня і запропонує відвідувачам багату та інформативну програму про середньовічну культуру та героїчне минуле українського народу. До уваги гостей фестивалю – численні барвисті події серед яких, зокрема, майстер-класи з танців, стрільби з лука, верхової їзди, середньовічних музичних інструментів, а також стародавніх народних ремесел, як от ковальство, гончарство чи ткацтво. Тут можна буде відчути атмосферу лицарських турнірів 9-18 століть, яку відтворять учасники українських товариств історичної реконструкції. А ще можна буде скуштувати страв, приготованих за давніми рецептами, послухати старовинної музики у виконанні музичних колективів. The sixth Boykivsky Festyny Ethno-Festival – which is held only once every five years (!) – will take place in the Turka region of Lviv Oblast from 2–6 August. The Boykos are an ethnographic group of Ukrainian highlanders that live along the slopes in the middle of the Carpathian Mountains in the Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Transcarpathian obasts. The event’s diverse programming features lectures on green tourism, literary readings, workshops, and an exhibition of locally-crafted goods. But the event really becomes entertaining and merry at the folk concerts, fairs, and when savouring the Boyko traditional cuisine. Festivalgoers from across Ukraine, Europe, North America, and even Australia will surely not want to miss the re-enactment of a jolly Bokyo wedding.

БОЙКІВСЬКІ ФЕСТИНИ 2–6 серпня у с. Явора, Турківський р-н Шості "Бойківський фестини", що проводяться лише один раз на п'ять років, відбудуться з 2 по 6 серпня в с. Явора Турківського району Львівської області. Бойки – це етнічна група українських горян, які проживають уздовж схилів Карпатських гір у Львівській, Івано-Франківській та Закарпатській областях України. The Etnovyr Folklore Festival, which highlights the bright, beautiful, sensual, magical, inspirational, and unforgettable nature of cultures from around the world, has become an enormous success since launching a few years ago. PARAJANOV FESTIVAL IN LEVANDIVKA 20–27 August in the Levandivka district of Lviv Taking place in one of Lviv’s more remote and industrial districts – Levandivka – the Parajanov Festival kicked off the whole new cinema art movement in Ukraine. The festival takes its name from a Ukrainian legend of cinematic art, Sergey Parajanov. One of the 20th Century’s greatest masters of cinema, Parajanov was born in Georgia to Armenian parents. It was never likely that his work would conform to the strict socialist realism that the Soviet authorities demanded, so he carved out his own unique cinematic style. Through films like ‘Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors’ (Tini Zabutyh Predkiv), a rhapsodic celebration of Ukrainian folk culture, and ‘The Colour of Pomegranates’ (Nran Guyne), a masterpiece about Armenian poet Sayat Nova, Parajanov became an international celebrity, even as his films were banned at home and he was imprisoned. His films were just beginning to hit the foreign film festival circuit when he died in 1990. The lavish Parajanov Festival programme includes film screenings, theatrical displays, visual projects, literary meetings, discussions, musical performances, and workshops. Throughout the festival, Levandivka will be transformed into a fine arts hub, where artists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Poland, and Ukraine, will work together to create an unforgettable atmosphere of limitless creative synergy, guided only by the ultimate rule of freedom. Organisers are planning a great holiday concert for Independence Day on 24 August and hope to establish a flea market in Levandivsky Park – something that Parajanov would have loved. The festival is organised by Lviv City Council’s Department of Culture in partnership with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw, the Ernst Schering Foundation Program, and the MitOst Association. ФЕСТИВАЛЬ ПАРАДЖАНОВА НА ЛЕВАНДІВЦІ 20–27 серпня, Левандівка На Левандівці, в одниму з найвіддаленіших районів Львова, з 20 по 27 серпня відбудеться Фестиваль Параджанова, присвячений розвитку нового кіномистецтва в Україні. Фестиваль отримав свою назву на честь легенди українського кінематографа Сергія Параджанова. Один з найбільших майстрів кінематографа 20 століття, Параджанов народився в Грузії у вірменській родині. Від самого початку його творчість не вписувалась у рамки обов’язкового тоді для всіх соціалістичного реалізму, тому він створив і розвинув свій власний унікальний кінематографічний стиль. Через такі фільми, як "Тіні забутих предків", справжнє свято української народної культури та "Цвіт граната", шедевр про вірменського поета Саят Нова, Параджанов став всесвітньо відомим, навіть коли його фільми були заборонені на батьківщині, а сам він перебував в ув'язненні. Його фільми тільки починали виходити на міжнародні кінофестивалі, коли він помер у 1990 році. Програма фестивалю Параджанова включає фільми, театральні вистави, візуальні проекти, літературні зустрічі, дискусії, музичні вистави та майстер-класи. Протягом усього фестивалю Левандівка перетвориться на центр образотворчого мистецтва, де художники з Вірменії, Азербайджану, Білорусі, Грузії, Молдови, Польщі та України будуть працювати разом, щоб створити незабутню атмосферу безмежної творчої синергії, обмеженої лише власною свободою. Організатори планують провести чудовий святковий концерт на День Незалежності 24 серпня та створити тимчасовий блошиний ринок у Левандівському парку – який Параджанову, напевно б, сподобався. AUTHORS’ READING MONTH 5 July – 4 August at Dzyga Culture & Arts Centre (35 Virmenska St.) Beginning: 19:00 and 20:30 The annual Authors’ Reading Month (ARM) – the largest literary festival in Central Europe – will be held in Lviv from 5 July to 4 August. First held in Brno in 2000, the event quickly spread to other cities, first in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, then Poland, and since 2015 in Lviv. The event’s focus is twofold: on one hand, it concentrates on presenting the national literature of the hosting countries; on the other, it selects a fifth country each year to become the ‘Guest of Honour’ and feature its literature – this year it is Georgia. The festival launches on 1 July every year and participating cities host various events for the next month. Two authors are introduced each day – one visiting and one local. In all, every city hosts 62 writers over the month as well as over 300 authors’ readings. All readings are broadcasted live in their original language (with Ukrainian subtitles) and recordings are available online. Leopolitan literature lovers and guests of the city will have the chance to meet some of the best contemporary Ukrainian and Georgian writers. Eventgoers can check out Tanja Maljartschuk, Olena Huseinova, Mykola Ryabchuk, Yuliya Musakovska, and Sergey Osoka (and others) from Ukraine, as well as Dato Turashvili, Aka Morchiladze, Paata Shamugia, Mariam Tsiklauri, and Beso Khvedelidze (and others) from Georgia. МІСЯЦЬ АВТОРСЬКИХ ЧИТАНЬ 5 липня – 4 серпня, культурно-мистецький центр "Дзиґа" (вул. Вірменська, 35) Початок: о 19:00 та о 20:30 Щорічний "Місяць авторських читань" – найбільший літературний фестиваль у Центральній Європі – пройде у Львові з 5 липня по 4 серпня. Відбувшись вперше у словацькому місті Брно 2000 року, ця подія швидко поширилася на інші міста, спочатку в Чехії та Словаччині, потім у Польщі, а з 2015 року – і у Львові. Акцент робиться на два аспекти: з одного боку, це представлення національної літератури приймаючої країни; з іншого – кожного року вибирається п'ята країна, яка стає "Почесним гостем", і представляє свою літературу. Цього року цією країною стала Грузія. Фестиваль стартує 1 липня кожного року, а в приймаючих містах протягом цілого місяця проходять різні заходи. Кожен день презентують двох авторів – одного гостя та одного місцевого. В цілому, в кожному місті за місяць виступлять 62 письменники, а також відбудеться понад 300 авторських читань. Всі читання транслюються в прямому ефірі мовою оригіналу (з українськими субтитрами), а записи доступні в Інтернеті. Львівським любителям літератури та гостям міста буде надана можливість зустрітись з найкращими сучасними українськими та грузинськими письменниками. MODEL GLIDERS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 23–29 July at the flying field near Lviv (13 km from the city centre) The 2017 FAI F3K Model Glider World Championships is coming to a flying field near Lviv from 23-29 July. Leopolitan aviation lovers and guests of the city are welcome to attend this spectacular event that will include breathtaking glider flights and plenty of entertaining outdoor activities. A radio-controlled glider is a type of aircraft that normally doesn’t have any form of propulsion. They are able to sustain continuous flight by exploiting the lift produced by slopes and thermals and are controlled remotely from the ground with a transmitter. They can be constructed from a variety of materials, including wood, plastic, polymer foams, and composites, and can vary in wing loading from very light to relatively heavy, depending on their intended use. International radio-controlled glider competitions are regulated by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), although many countries have their own classes. The 2017 Model Glider World Championships will welcome more than 300 competitors from 30 teams around the world to the Western Ukrainian capital. Eventgoers can see teams compete from as far away as China, Japan, Canada, and the USA. ЧЕМПІОНАТ СВІТУ З АВІАМОДЕЛЬНОГО СПОРТУ 23–29 липня, аеродром біля Львова (13 км від центру міста) Чемпіонат світу з авіамодельного спорту FAI F3K відбудеться з 23 по 29 липня на випробуваному полі поблизу Львова, де вже проводились міжнародні змагання з ракетомодельного спорту. Усіх, хто цікавиться авіацією та моделюванням, львів’ян та гостей міста запрошують відвідати цю цікаву подію, де будуть і польоти на висоту й дальність, і безліч розважальних заходів на свіжому повітрі. Радіокерована модель планера – це тип повітряного судна без механічного приводу. Ці моделі утримуються в повітрі завдяки підйомній силі, що створюється завдяки висхідним термічним потокам і дистанційно управляється з землі за допомогою радіопередавача. Вони можуть бути виготовлені з різних матеріалів, як от дерево, пластик, полімерні піни та композити та можуть мати навантаження на крило різної величини, залежно від їх конструкції та призначення. "MUSIC IN OLD LVIV" INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 13–31 August at Locations around city centre Some of the biggest names in classical and fine music will converge in Lviv’s historic centre as part of the ‘Music in Old Lviv’ international festival from 13-31 August. The idea first occurred in 2014, as Lviv’s Virtuosos Academic Chamber Orchestra celebrated its 20th anniversary. THE MUSICAL DELIGHTS OF LYUDKEVYCH FEST 8–17 September at locations around the city Lviv – the Ukrainian festival capital – will host a new musical festival called Lyudkevych Fest from 8-17 September. Dedicated to famed Ukrainian composer, teacher, and musical activist Stanyslav Lyudkevych, the festival will be held at 10 locations and feature 30 artists from across the country at 20 extraordinary musical events. Leopolitan music lovers and guests of the city won’t want to miss out on the concerts, workshops, roundtable discussions, or educational excursions that the festival will also have to offer. Lyudkevych was born in 1879 in present-day Poland before studying philosophy at the Lviv University until 1907. He worked as a teacher in Lviv and Przemysl before earning his PhD in musicology in Vienna in 1908. Ludkevych was active in the city’s musical scene during his time in Lviv, including as the editor of the city’s ‘Artistic Bulletin’ magazine before finishing his studies. After graduating, he returned to Lviv to help found the M. Lysenko Higher Musical Institute and remained its director until 1915. He stayed on in different roles and worked with the Boyan, Bandurist, and Surma choirs. By 1936, the influential musician became head of the musicological commission of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and finished his 33-year teaching career at Lysenko Institute in 1972. He died in Lviv at the age of 100 and is now buried at Lychakiv cemetery. The announcement of the new festival came during a special concert in the garden of Lyudkevych’s former house during the Lviv Nights festival. The concert featured a performance on the antique Austrian Franz Wirth grand piano. As Ludkevych was said to be very fond of cats, organisers invited guests to bring their own feline friends. Lviv Was Always the Home

of Polish Star Bogdanska Rena’s life changed forever after striking a friendship with Polish Jewish singer Gwidon Borucki, who persuaded Wars to audition her. She was hired and joined this amazing orchestra. During the next year, she toured the Soviet Union three times with it, recording a song in Russian in Moscow and marrying Gwidon in Kyiv. The rest is the stuff of legends. Stranded in Soviet Central Asia by the German invasion, she, along with Borucki and Wars, ended up in the Polish army with other deportees freed as a result of Churchill’s and Roosevelt’s interventions with Stalin. The unit was named “Anders Corps” after its leader, General Anders. They crossed Iran, Iraq, and Egypt before finding glory at the Battle for Monte Cassino in central Italy in 1944.

THE POLISH STAR RETURNS TO HER ROOTS

enata Bogdanska-Anders may be a Polish diva and national icon, but did you know that this remarkable woman was actually Ukrainian? Her marriage to Poland’s legendary military and political leader General Wladyslaw Anders turned her into the First Lady of the postwar Polish anti-communist diaspora, but her birth 100 years ago (12-May-1917), formative years, and rise to stardom were all spent right here in Lviv.

GETTING HER START IN THE GALICIAN CAPITAL In the late 1930s, she was the love of Bohdan Vesolovsky – Lviv’s pioneering composer and musician that, along with his Yabtso jazz band, revolutionised Western Ukraine’s music scene with their trend-setting tangos and other popular dance music. It was Bogdanska, known then as Irena or Rena Yarosevych, that was the singer of this iconic Ukrainian band. By day, she was a student at Lviv’s Lysenko Higher Institute of Music, training to be an opera singer or classical pianist. By night, alongside Vesolovsky and Anatoly Kos-Anatolsky and Leonid Yablonsky, she provided a Ukrainian public constrained by Polish political rule with the new sound and entertainment that helped serve as an antidote to Polonisation. Rena came from a prominent patriotic Western Ukrainian family that settled in Lviv in the 1920s. Her father

served as a Ukrainian Catholic priest and chaplain at a mental hospital and uncle was celebrated priest and composer Ostap Nyzhankivsky – executed by Polish forces in 1919 after subduing the West Ukrainian People’s Republic (ZUNR). Like her older brother Anatol, Rena was an active member of Plast, the Ukrainian scouting organisation. Her brother was in Plast with Roman Shukhevych, the future leader of UPA, the Ukrainian underground resistance. She studied music with his brother Yuriy.

Anders fell in love with Rena and they married in London in 1948. Before this, she starred in two Italian films alongside Italian cinematic legends like Vittorio De Sica and Anna Magnani. She later become a star of exile Polish stage broadcasts by the BBC and Radio Free Europe and recorded scores of songs in Polish. Although a Polish celebrity, she never disavowed her Ukrainian origins. After her husband’s death in the early 1970s, Rena recorded several Ukrainian songs in London. A few years before her death in 2010, she defied age and fragility by returning to the city she loved and where her parents are buried. Rena, the decorated Polish star, returned to Ukrainian Lviv to remember, reflect, and say goodbye. Bohdan Nahaylo, Ukrainian historian

WAR CHANGES HER FATE The upheaval in the late 1930s separated Rena from Bohdan, who ended up in Canada after the war. She worked at the Lviv Opera House in the dangerous days of Soviet rule following the Nazi-Soviet partitioning of Poland in September 1939. This is where she took the stage name Renata Bogdanska – in memory of her beloved Vesolovsky. In late 1939, Lviv’s life was transformed not just by the imposition of Soviet rule, but also by the arrival of thousands of refugees fleeing Nazi rule, including many leading figures of Poland’s vibrant cultural life. Stars of film and stage – many of them Jewish – made their way to the Galician capital, including film score, popular song, and classical music composer Henryk Wars, who was allowed to create the Lwow Tea (Theatrical) Jazz band. GOOD UNIVERSITIES ARE BUILT AROUND A GOOD IDEA Stefan Behnisch, together with his partners from the firm Behnisch Architekten, has designed dozens of buildings during his successful career. His most recent project, the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Centre at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine, will open September 10, 2017. In terms of design and concept, the Centre is a unique structure in Ukraine which has generated great excitement in advance of the grand opening and consecration of the new Centre. We met with architect Stefan Behnisch and spoke with him about the project, and the specific challenges he faced designing the Centre. Mr. Behnisch, I would like to begin with a question about your decision to become an architect. As a student in Munich, you first studied philosophy and economics and only later studied architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe. Why did you change the initial track you were pursuing and choose to pursue architecture instead? Thank you for that question. Architecture had always been an important part of my life. My father was a well-known architect in Germany. He was an architect for the Olympic facilities in Munich, for example. When I finished school, everybody expected me to become an architect. Therefore, initially, I decided not to become an architect. I wanted to be a journalist. So what education does one need to be a good journalist? You try to find a field in which to be an expert. The most general field of study I found was philosophy. At the same time, I began my studies in macroeconomics – the political side of economics. That direction was more interesting for me than microeconomics. However, in reality, I was not free from architecture. I deeply understood the principles and purpose of architecture, good design. During my childhood, all our family vacations were about visiting interesting places, discussing buildings. As a result, I had already started my education in architecture from basics.

Can you describe the evolution of your work? Of course, when you begin a career, you are more naïve, maybe more idealistic, than when you are 60. This does not mean better or worse – just means different. I think the most important idea for me in terms of career and development is to really understand and resist the temptation to think that you know it all. I genuinely believe that the more you learn, the more you understand how much you still do not know.

YOU UNDERSTAND THAT ARCHITECTURE IS NOT FOR THE ARCHITECT, BUT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WILL USE THE BUILDING. I consider that the most important aspect of learning is that it opens a gate for more knowledge. Learning is like an iceberg – you see only the top of it. We may grow wiser and more knowledgeable, but the crucial part is to understand that you will never and can never know everything. Therefore, you must remain open. I have found that with age I have become more inquisitive. If you must work simply to feed yourself and your family, then there is not much room for curiosity. My team and I are in a privileged situation where we can

afford to be and remain inquisitive. I have an idea to open a new office in Berlin that will do only research. Which of your projects were the most special for you? There are key projects that have opened new horizons for us. One of them was a pilot project in sustainable architecture in the early 1990s. This opened a new world for us. Then there was the Genzyme Center in Cambridge, our first project in America. However, some of the most interesting projects were never built. They were well researched and fantastic, but never reached the pragmatic phase of realization. The Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Centre of UCU visually reminds us of a stack of books. What is behind this design concept? Architecturally, it was interesting for us to rethink the role of a library in the university of the 21st century. A traditional understanding of library defines it as a big storage area for books, where students could go and read, do research, most often, individually. With the development of electronic media and technologies for more and more universities, libraries become broader centers for learning and communication. The library of the new age is a place where people work and study together.

What were the main influences that shaped your design principles and philosophy? I think it is rather a mix of different experiences. Past experiences shape us, how we think, how we make decisions. I had always shared the humanistic ideals of my father. Also, studying philosophy influenced a certain way of thinking – to design a building with respect for our environment, nature, for society, for people as a whole, as well as individuals in particular. You understand that architecture is not for the architect, but for the people who will use the building. Fundamentally, my design philosophy is about respect. And while I have people whom I consider to be my architectural heroes, I always tell my students this: if you have a hero, please make sure that he or she has been dead for at least for 50 years. Do not declare a living person to be your hero, at least not publicly. Otherwise, you will constantly be compared and always be seen and perceived as a reflection of that person.

LVIV INTERVIEW This is your first project in Ukraine, with a Ukrainian partner. How was this experience?

The library is less about the pure storage of books, it is more about a place of communication. However, books continue to symbolize knowledge, the essence of a library. There are many mistakes made during the last 30 years from which we should learn. Many libraries have not really functioned well because they continued to follow an outdated concept. In this design, we wanted to get it right. Our goal was to create a building that is flexible enough to adjust over time to the different needs of the university, students, and faculty. Architecturally, that had some implications - the ground floor is very public, allowing the community to gather. The other floors are designed for study, and there is a more restrained administrative floor on top. We decided to create the facade that makes a distinction between the need for light, and the need for visual contact with the outdoors. You can almost sit in the window to read, to be part of landscape outside, and from the outside, see what is happening in the library. On the exterior, a part of the university church is reflected on the façade, as well as the green park and blue sky. The building will be a good neighbor. The building will have its own identity, but will also absorb its surroundings. Apart from the changes in media in libraries, we also see that we now have a different generation of students than the generations before. How was that reflected in the building concept? I belong to the older generation. Now we have the generation that does not remember Soviet times. Now we have a generation that, probably, is more oriented to Central Europe than to the East, especially here in Lviv, in Western Ukraine. There are people from Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania on my team. We have become very international. For my generation, it made a difference where you came from. For this younger generation, it is more important to know how old you are. Their peer attitude is more international than that of my generation. Now we are talking about the so-called Generation Z, for example. It is the highest educated generation on this planet. While they are very strong individuals, who know what they want, they also are more into projects and working together as good collaborators, and they are loyal to brands and companies. They have a more assertive self-definition than my generation. This change has a big implication on how LVIV TODAY | Summer 2017

universities will function in the future and the types of facilities that we will have to provide. I think, the learning center is exactly the right thing. There is room for individual study, but more than ever before, there is emphasis on various types of common working spaces where people can meet and work on projects in groups, work and learn collaboratively.

I find that it is always rewarding to work with intelligent people and in a university you meet the most intelligent people. I did not come with specific expectations. I understand that this is Central Europe, which has a different history than Western Europe, and I know there is a GermanUkrainian past, which, to be honest, is a very difficult one. There is the new Ukrainian-Russian experience that influences society greatly. I think I knew what to expect, and I understood the necessity to both acknowledge and overcome the separation of generations. It is important to have these separations of generations to grow. Honestly, I did expect more problems than I encountered. I expected a sadder overall situation than it is. Lviv is a welcoming city, interesting, unspoiled. We decided to work with Julian Chaplinsky and his bureau because our experience has shown that this type of partnership will work well. We have found that it is always better to work with someone, who has not had much experience, but who considers a project to be very interesting, rewarding and a step forward. I find it to be a big mistake to work with someone who has had a huge amount of experience. They think that if they have built ten libraries, then they know everything about libraries. However, a library at the Ukrainian Catholic University is different from a library in Toronto. We had an excellent partner, one who was excited, believed that this was a good project for them, not just routine. Therefore, our working relationship was very good.

I am an architect, so therefore maybe not the right person to advise any educators about what to do. I think they know better than I do. I work for many universities in the United States. I think that a big misunderstanding, especially in the US, is the thought that a university is about the building environment. A university really is more a spiritual entity, it is an idea. A good university is not good only because it has great buildings, although great buildings may help raise a university’s popularity. Buildings are important, but, in general, good universities are built around a good idea, evolve around a good concept, a good teaching concept. Education should respond to the needs of society, of young people. A student is a person who will transform our societies in the future. It is not necessarily about influence, but about how can we give them the best opportunities to develop what is in them, rather than changing them. That, I think, is the main difference between classical and modern education. During the last ten years, we have had more innovation, more patents than in all of the 6,000 years before. So, how can we hope even to foresee how the future will develop, a challenge we may not fully meet? I have read that 60% of the professions that will exist in 2050 are not yet known. We have no idea what these professions will be. How can I teach young people about a new profession, if I do not even know what will exist in 60 years? Therefore, all we can do is prepare young people to be open and to develop their inner resources, give them tools, confidence to meet change and new challenges.

What are the main challenges that architects face these days? The primary challenge is that the building and construction industry is the most conservative industry, probably next to lawyers. The industry is very inflexible. People always want to do what they have done for the past 20, 30 years. For example, builders are trained to install air-conditioning automatically, even if not necessary. Mechanical engineers think we should not open windows, instead, just crank up the AC. Another challenge is that older people are being asked to think about and decide what younger people might need, often with little or no input from the young. That is a challenge. I consider myself fortunate. I am in a profession where we always work for different clients. We have to be flexible. There are people in my office who are the same age as my children. Therefore, I know what they are thinking. To overcome some of these obstacles, I think it is important not to focus only on what you have been trained to do, do not focus only on your previous experiences and repeat, but be critical of your experience. Understand what went right, but also what went wrong. That is the challenge in the building industry that we must meet. Interview by Mariya Chubata

Please tell us what’s so special about your work at the fashion channel. Well, it’s the intrigues, scandals, and fact-finding – these are the greatest specialities of working for the fashion edition on the channel. You should know about all of the latest trends in the fashion world, follow new names and new ideas. And I’m not just talking about clothes. “Fashion” also means lifestyle, so it becomes part of your life as well as a great deal of your work and leisure time, including sport, social media, charity foundations, etc. In short, you need to know a little something about everything if you want to be part of the fashion industry. Another important rule is that you must be friends with everyone! Sure, you can gossip, tell some secrets, and make deals. But when you attend a social event – you must keep smiling and take selfies with everyone!

How is your channel different from public television? In the broadcasting industry, fashion television is different as it totally craves a different approach to the work. I would say a glossier approach. On a news channel, it’s very important to confirm facts via official sources and present the latest news quickly and efficiently, with beauty and aesthetics coming in second place. As far as fashion is concerned, you should put more effort into creating catchy backgrounds. For example, one time we had to reshoot an entire show from the very beginning just LVIV TODAY | Summer 2017

because some road repair workers were in the background. Fashion television resembles glossy magazines, so the images in each video must be perfectly picturesque.

What is the future for such channels? Speaking about general public television, which we all have at home, I can’t see the purpose for such a format in the future. The latest trends show that a channel needs to find a target group and work for them. The task is not to attract everyone, from grandparents to children, to the screen. It’s more logical to give your “own” audience the information that is especially interesting to that group. Keeping in mind that the list of bloggers, vloggers, and YouTube channel presenters grows by the hour, I can see success for fashion channels existing not as part of public television, but as online resources. For example, our channel cooperates with the online HoReCa platform, where we cooperate to select popular restaurants, hotels, sport centres, and hotspots in the city, allowing us to connect our content to even more screens. When you are deep into the clubbing scene, you quickly discover that those so-called celebrities are really quite ordinary people. One of my first interviews was with (former Ukrainian President) Leonid Kuchma at some art exhibition. I was extremely excited that evening! It was not just the beginning of my journalism career, but also such a prominent public figure! So as you can imagine, I managed to ask two questions and mumbled something in the end. Later, as I gained more experience, I interviewed many famous people from different spheres of life. I can’t say that everyone made a pleasant impression. For example, after meeting some of my favourite actors in person, I stopped watching their movies altogether! As far as world-famous celebrities go, I have interviewed designers like Donatella Versace, Alberta Feretti, Philipp Plein, the brothers Dean and Dan Caten of the Dsquared brand, and famed fashion nonconformist Jeremy Scott. For my TV show, I have interviewed well-known bloggers, models, and actors like Chiara Ferragni, Natalia Vodianova, Natasha Poly, Jourdan Dunn, and Milla Jovovich. I even once managed to take a photo of Suzy Menkes – one of the world’s most influential fashion critics and journalists – after she had fallen asleep at a fashion show!

What are the advantages of fashion channels for advertisers? These channels are ideal for advertisers. Firstly, the advertising rates differ greatly from public television rates. Secondly, it doesn’t matter if you want it or not, but when you are eating at a restaurant or getting a manicure at a beauty salon, you are a captive audience – you will see the screen and the ad. Maybe you won’t be interested at first, but you will still remember the image subconsciously. And the most important thing to remember is that today those 15-second ads will never sell the goods. Nobody wants to just buy goods – people want to know what celebrities use the same goods or to see if the purchase will improve their image. People want to buy image, to become closer to the trendsetters and celebrities, to become more like their idols. From this point of view, fashion channels are an extremely important venue. These channels have no direct advertising blocks, but they have the possibility to advertise indirectly by showing what outfits celebrities choose, what makeup they use, or what coffee they drink. You just need to put the goods that you want to sell in the picture.

FAINE MISTO MUSIC FESTIVAL 20–23 July at the Ternopil Hippodrome Faine Misto is one of the few Ukrainian festivals that combines almost all musical genres – rock, alternative, folk, pop, dance, and even reggae. Held annually since 2013, the festival attracts only the biggest Ukrainian and foreign musicians to one of its five festival stages – the Main Stage, the UFO Stage, the Reggae Stage, and the Light and Dark Stages. This year, more than 50 groups from across Ukraine, Europe, and South America will perform. In addition to the

RESPBULICA FEST 2017 1–3 September at Virmenska Square in Kamyanets-Podilskyi (270 km from Lviv) Respublica FEST is a festival of modern street art in all of its manifestations: music, photography, dance, graffiti, and more. With more than 10,000 visitors each year, it is considered to be one of the biggest music and street art festivals in Ukraine. In fact, Traveling Marketing 3D named it one of the “100 best events for Ukrainian tourism” and it is the only Ukrainian representative of Google’s Street Art Project. The festival aims to popularise public activism and volunteering through the step-by-step transformation of depressed city districts into museums of social and territorial art. KOKTEBEL JAZZ FESTIVAL 24–27 August in Chernomorsk (Odesa Region) The popular holiday destination of Chernomorsk in the Odesa region is the host for this year’s chic Koktebel Jazz Festival from 24–27 August. From its roots as a private initiative of founder DmitriyKiselev back in 2003, Koktebel has become a huge movement that greatly influences the world of European jazz music. Traditionally held in Crimea, the festival was forced to relocate to the Odesa region in 2014 after Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea. Lviv’s Alfa Jazz Fest, the international open-air jazz festival held on three downtown stages every June, has grown to be one of the city’s largest and most popular events, drawing hundreds of press and over 40,000 spectators each year. First held in 2011, this is the story of how Alfa Jazz Fest became Lviv’s festival gem. The festival traditionally takes place on three stages: the Eddie Rosner Main Stage in B. Khmelnytskyi Culture Park, the Rynok Square Stage, and the Pototski Palace Square Stage. The main events, including performances by Alfa Fest headliners, take place at the Main Stage. The park features some of the city’s finest outdoor acoustics that, along with the giant video screens located throughout the park, allow Leopolitan jazz lovers and guests of the city to enjoy the magnificent sounds of some of the world’s best jazz stars from even the most distant corners of the park. Festival headliners have included China Moses, Herbie Hancock, Chucho Valdes, Gregory Porter, Buika, and Avishai Cohen alongside the INSO-Lviv Academic Symphony Orchestra.

The Eddie Rosner Alfa Jazz Fest Awards are held each year in conjunction with the festival. The awards were established to honour musicians who have made a significant contribution to the development of jazz music. The winner is selected by an expert international jury that includes music critics, cultural celebrities, government officials, journalists, and entrepreneurs. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi presented this year’s award to Cuban pianist and composer Chucho Valdes. Valdes has won six Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammys and is considered one of the most influential Afro-Cuban musicians in history. This year’s festival was closed out by Ukrainian singer and musician Khrystyna Soloviy. Performing primarily folk music, especially Lemky songs with modern arrangements, Soloviy treated concertgoers with a special preview of her nationwide debut tour ‘Living Water’. Of course, there are plenty more activities on the Alfa Jazz Fest programme, including workshops, jam sessions with leading musicians, and even a number of jazz film screenings from the collection of Leonid Goldstein, a legend in the Ukrainian jazz movement.

Премія Едді Рознера фестивалю "Альфа-Джаз" присуджується щороку музикантам, які зробили значний внесок у розвиток джазової музики. Переможця вибирає експертне міжнародне журі, до якого входять музичні критики, діячі культури, державні службовці, журналісти й підприємці. Мер Львова Андрій Садовий особисто вручив цьогорічну нагороду кубинському піаністу та композитору Чучо Вальдесу, який здобув шість нагород Греммі та три латиноамериканські Греммі і вважається одним з найвпливовіших афро-кубинських музикантів в історії джазу. На закритті цьогорічного фестивалю виступила українська співачка й музикант Христина Соловій. Головною темою її виступів є народна музика, особливо лемківські пісні в сучасній обробці. Христина Соловій цього літа має дебют свого всеукраїнського туру з програмою "Жива вода". Також у програмі фестивалю було багато інших заходів, включаючи майстер-класи, джазові сесії з провідними музикантами і перегляд фільмів джазової тематики з колекції легенди українського джазового руху Леоніда Гольдштейна. BUCC’S ANNUAL LVIV RECEPTION The British-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce (BUCC)’s annual Lviv Reception and Luncheon, held with the assistance of the Lviv Chamber of Commerce and in cooperation with Alfa Jazz Fest, took place at the Citadel Inn Hotel’s Garmata Restaurant on 23 June. The event saw the Leopolitan business elite mingle and dine alongside local and regional government officials and media to discuss issues of doing business in Ukraine, especially in Lviv and region. This year’s meeting focused mainly on tourism and infrastructure and was led by Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Viktor Dovhan. Other speakers included Bate Toms, who reviewed BUCC’s current activities including a tourism promotion project; new CEO of Alfa Bank Ukraine Ivan Svitek, who shared his broad international experience; Lviv Deputy Mayor Hennadiy Vaskiv; and First Deputy Governor Rostislav Zamlynsky, who discussed the current situation for encouraging investment and development.

FOOTBALL MATCHES IN MEMORY OF ANDRIY BAL As part of the Alfa Jazz Fest schedule, football events dedicated to the iconic Ukrainian footballer Andriy Bal took place near the city’s main sports venue – Arena Lviv – on 26 June. The idea to organise the events came from Bal’s coach and friend Oleksiy Mykhailychenko, another famous Ukrainian footballer. The events centred around a match in memory of Bal, Dyamo’s legendary “Number Eight”, and featured many of his friends – well-known footballers that have played in World Cups and for teams like Dynamo Kyiv, Karpaty Lviv, and other renowned clubs. Leopolitan football fans and guests of the city saw Oleksiy Mykhailychenko, Anatoliy Demianenko, Volodomyr Bezsonov, Vasyl Rats, and Oleh Luzhny take the field alongside Oleksandr Shovkovskyi, Volodymyr Yezerskyi, Viktor Rafalchuk, Anatoliy Saulevych, Andriy’s younger brother Orest, and other Leopolitans and Ukrainian football hall of famers. The day also saw a national record set: 100 kids from all over Ukraine played against a united team of the friends of Andriy Bal. To make this happen, Football24, the event’s official media partner, created a special website where parents could register their children to take part. The day also saw a match between Bal’s friends and the winners of the Andriy Bal Ukrainian Children’s Football Cup – including teams from Rivne, who won the cup last season, and Rozdol, Bal’s native city. After the matches, the young players had the wonderful chance to meet the football stars, attend an autograph session, and receive memorable football gifts.

ФУТБОЛЬНИЙ МАТЧ ПАМ'ЯТІ АНДРІЯ БАЛЯ У рамках програми "Альфа Джаз Фест" 26 червня на стадіоні "Арена Львів" відбулась футбольна подія, присвячена знаменитому українському футболісту Андрію Балю. Ідея організувати таку подію належить футбольному тренеру та приятелю Баля, іншому відомому українському футболісту – Олексію Михайличенку. В центрі уваги був, звичайно ж, матч пам’яті Андрія Баля, легендарного восьмого номера київського "Динамо", в якому прийняли участь багато відомих футболістів, які грали в матчах Кубка світу, а також за "Динамо", львівські "Карпати". Львівські футбольні вболівальники та гості міста змогли побачити на полі таких відомих гравців, як Олексій Михайличенко, Анатолій Дем'яненко, Володимир Безсонов, Василь Рац, та Олег Лужний поряд з Олександром Шовковським, Володимиром Єзерським, Віктором Рафальчуком, Анатолієм Саулевичем, молодшим братом Андрія Орестом та іншими відомими українськими футболістами. Також відбулось встановлення національного рекорду: 100 дітей з усієї України грали проти збірної команди друзів Андрія Баля. The dazzling ‘Ukrainian Haute Couture’ fashion show featuring outfits by famed Ukrainian designer Oksana Karavanska took place in Lviv on 24 June as part of the Alfa Jazz Fest programme. The show was staged in a very special place – the Andrey Sheptytskyi Metropolitan Gardens on St. George’s Hill. This unique monument of 18th Century architecture and the park, normally closed to the public, welcomes the local glitterati once a year especially to enjoy this extraordinary event. The event attracted Lviv’s first lady Kateryna Kit-Sadova, TV presenters Katya Osadcha and Oleksiy Diveev-Tserkovny, designer, Victoria Gres, and singers Pavlo Tabokov and Pikkardiyska Tertsiya. Lviv’s Karavanska has been one of the biggest names in Ukrainian fashion for well over a decade. Her collection fuses traditional Ukrainian vyshyvanky (embroidered shirts) with elements of high fashion and is designed especially for sophisticated,

confident, and independent women. In addition to the ethnic folklore trend that has become a staple of contemporary Ukrainian fashion, the collection showcases glimpses of Ukrainian history, culture, and art from around the country. The elegant event dazzled attendees with Karavanska’s spectacular haute couture fashion, which was well complimented with theatrical, artistic, and vocal performances under the direction of the Shevchenko National Prize-winning Ukrainian actress, singer, and teacher Nataliya Polovynka. Event guests were delighted with the exquisite mix of fashion and performance of ‘Wedding is the Blossom of the Earth’, which featured wedding songs from across Ukraine that were the inspiration for Karavanska’s newest collection. Held for the third time, Karavanska’s ‘Ukraine Haute Couture’ has no doubt become a symbol of modern Ukraine – successful, stylish, creative, and authentic.

Thanks to the generosity of distinguished Canadian entrepreneur, civic leader, and philanthropist James Temerty, Lviv City Children’s Clinical Hospital received significant equipment on 19 June to improve surgical care for the little patients. Canadian Ambassador Roman Waschuk headed the benefactors’ delegation and met with Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, while Lviv Children’s Hospital Head Physician Dmytro Kvit gave members of the delegation paintings made by kids saved through timely surgeries. Western Ukraine’s leading children’s neurosurgical department was created in 2013 at the Lviv Children’s Hospital thanks to a joint program between Ukraine and Canada. This department is equipped with innovative specialised facilities that provide tremendous assistance during neurosurgical operations as well as diagnosing sick children from across Western Ukraine. The same day saw another prominent Canadian – Program Director of the Ukraine Paediatric Fellowship Program (UPFP) and a neurosurgeon at SickKids Dr. James Rutka – conduct a series of complicated surgeries in Lviv alongside Leopolitan paediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Taras Mykytyn. Sick children in Ukraine have a greater chance for survival thanks to improved access to care through the UPFP, which cooperates with Toronto’s SickKids Foundation. The program better equips doctors to treat children that require advanced surgical techniques, and builds capacity through clinical consultations, surgical guidance, and educational trips led by SickKids medical experts. The UPFP was made possible thanks to the commitment and vision of the Children of Chornobyl Canadian Fund, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, SickKids, and many individual members of the Ukrainian-Canadian community. THAT N EVER HAPPEN ED : The Untold Story of How Canada Interned its Ukrainian Citizens and the majestic Rocky Mountains. The people-less shots and create a feeling of immensity and insignificance, that one is smaller than their surroundings. A feeling Boyko surely invokes to represent what the internees must have felt while they were shipped to some of the remotest parts of the Canadian hinterland. The film then moves into interviews with knowledgeable people from around the country – Dr. Bohdan Kordan, an academic that has written

The movie closes with a theme of hope, “In these times of ‘alternative facts’, xenophobia, and talk of registering undesirable ‘others’”, says Boyko, “this film has now become an urgent call to those who could easily repeat the mistakes of the past”.

magine a place where during the Great War, Ukrainian men, women, and children were rounded-up and transported to remote places far from their homes. They had committed no crimes, nor been charged or convicted. They were then forced to spend years living behind barbed wire and providing forced labour. Can you believe that place was Canada? At the time, Canada was at war with Germany and Austria-Hungary and interned over 8,500 Ukrainians at work camps (aka concentration camps). They were forced to work on projects like road- and railway- building or in mines or on farms. Most had their savings confiscated and some never returned home. The rest of Canada’s Ukrainian population – some 80,000 people – were forced to register as “enemy aliens”.

A LABOUR OF LOVE BY A CANADIAN INTERNMENT SPECIALIST In his feature directorial debut, Canadian actor Ryan Boyko looks at Canada’s First World War internment of Ukrainian-Canadians in Armistice Films’ documentary ‘That Never Happened’. Boyko is what you would call a specialist in Canada’s internment operations, having traveled to all 24 sites the Canadian government used to house the prisoners over the past seven years. He is the writer, director, and producer of the award-winning ‘The Camps’, a two season, 33-episode TV documentary series on the same subject. Like the TV series, ‘That Never Happened’ uses interviews with a number of knowledgeable groups to look at the subject, including descendants of internees, archaeologists, politicians, academics, and even the Canadian military. “My chief aim was to honour the innocent men, women, and children who were treated unjustly over a century ago, and all those who have suffered the ripple effects since”, Boyko told Lviv Today last month.

DISCOVERING CANADA’S INTERNMENT PAST ‘That Never Happens’ opens by showing stunning images of Canada’s disparate regions – an East Coast lighthouse, snow-capped forests, the brooding prairies,

‘That Never Happened’ is a “Coles Notes” version of the compendium that is ‘The Camps’. It’s a 78-minute exploration of a topic covered extensively in two seasons of the TV series. It serves as an excellent introduction to the subject of Canadian internment, a topic that is not well known – even in Canada. While the film would benefit by offering a counterpoint to the Ukrainian-Canadian community’s take on the subject (e.g. the camps were “make work” projects in a time of high unemployment), the film does feature an official representative

Boyko decided to work with Kyiv-based Kinotur in an effort to stimulate a co-production treaty between Canada and Ukraine. The company is Ukraine’s sole digital intermediate lab that offers finishing and mastering services and provided colouring services to ‘That Never Happened’. In addition, Oleksandr Kryshtalovych, the Ukrainian cinematographer of films like Firecrosser and the upcoming Taras Homecoming, served as the director of photography. The Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund and Armistice Films funded the film. “When we first started making this project, we thought we were making a historical documentary relevant to a few ethnic communities in Canada”, says Boyko. “We had no idea how incredibly relevant it would be today – not just in Canada, but around the world!” After ‘The Camps’, ‘That Never Happened’ is the second in a three-part audiovisual series Armistice Films is presenting on the subject of Canada’s internment of Ukrainians, culminating in 2018’s feature drama ‘Enemy Aliens’. That film has received partial funding from the Ukrainian State Film Agency and will be co-produced with Ukraine’s Pronto Films. ‘That Never Happened’ made its festival circuit debut in June in Canada and Boyko hopes to screen it at Ukrainian festivals as early as this summer. Owned by Google, this powerful app lets you edit and filter your photos as you go – all in a user-friendly manner. It also works with landscape photos, for those wanting to post their pics online when the get home. #8 – Sightseeing: LiveTrekker – This cool app will automatically track where you travel and geotag your photos, videos, audio, and everything else so that you can relive your trip when you return! #6 – Travel: Uber: While Leopolitans are likely familiar with this app, after the company’s widely publicised introduction earlier this year, the real ease of the app is how it synchs with other map apps to get you on your way (See #1 – Google Maps). Be warned though, in many countries a credit card linked to your account is required before using Uber (i.e. cash is NOT an option). EBA EVENTS INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON WOMEN ENTEPRENEURSHIP In June 23, for the first time, the International Women's Forum on ‘The Role of Women Entrepreneurship in the Turbulent Time’ was held on the platform of the EBA Western Ukrainian Office and Ievgeniia Diadko, a research coordinator at Precedent Academics and board member in the Interdisciplinary Research Foundation. The participants of the Forum discussed the results of a study on the challenges Ukrainian woman face running a business, made by John Johnson, the Professor of Colorado State University. Among

them is the lack of effective contacts, excessive bureaucracy, uncertainty in their abilities. EBA MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE WITH CREDIT AGRICOLE Each manager should be aware of current macroeconomic situation in order to be ready to change company’s strategy in aim to prevent some threats or catch opportunities. That’s why Alina Boychuk, Management Committee Chair and Andriy Kamenetskyy, Head of Credit Agricole MNC Desk, had invited Oleksandr Pecherytsyn, Expert in macroeconomics, finance and capital markets, Chief Economist at Credit Agricole Bank to answer the most frequently asked questions in this sphere.

The meeting covered core macroeconomic issues that Ukrainian economy is facing currently. In particular, the essential question was the ability of economy to remain on growing track under volatile external environment and under potential temporary slowdown of the economy impacted by trade blockade effect. The analysis in the presentation highlighted strong points for domestic economy. Most of macroeconomic forecasts remained moderately optimistic. The speaker noted GDP recovery in 2016, strong support from investments, private consumption recovery, mostly balanced balance of payment, reserves coverage in comfortable zone, inflation slowdown. Despite of positive things it is still negative net exports, dependence on external markets and on external financing. The situation on currency control restrictions is changing very rapidly, could you please provide us with the latest significant updates in this field, so we could proceed with our activities in a due and lawful course. Dear Michael, Indeed during last several months National Bank of Ukraine (“NBU”) adopted a list of resolutions on the liberalization of currency control regulation in different their aspects, here we would like to indicate the most significant ones. 1. Liberalization of licensing of operation of individuals on investments abroad • Individuals do not have to receive the NBU license on placement the currency on foreign accounts in case such currency was received by them abroad (salaries, dividends, aliments, etc.); • Individuals are allowed to make investments abroad by using their own foreign funds (which are located outside the territory of Ukraine). 2. Decreasing the amount of obligatory selling of currency received from abroad Legal entities now have to sell 50 per cent of the funds they received from abroad (instead of previous 65 per cent). 3. Increased the possibility of selling of currency cash per one day Now it is possible for individuals and legal entities to buy currency cash in amount equivalent to UAH 150 000 within on day in one bank of financial institution (instead of previous UAH 12 000). 4. Increased the amount of possible operations for legal entities. Legal entities are allowed to carry out their operations on the basis of individual licenses of the NBU for investments abroad, provided that the total amount of such operations within the limits of one individual license within one calendar year does not exceed USD 2 000 000 (the equivalent of this amount in another the currency at the official exchange rate of hryvnia to foreign currencies, established by the NBU on the date of transfer). Previously such limit was established as USD 50 000 per one month. 5. Possibility for purchase/transfer abroad without confirmation/or limitation NBU cancelled: • A prohibition on the purchase of foreign currency by a resident (other than individuals) who owns funds in foreign currencies in the amount which exceeds USD 100,000 (in the equivalent of the official exchange rate of hryvnia to the respective currencies); • Restriction for the individuals on the funds transfer from the territory of Ukraine for non-trading operations (previously such restriction was indicated for maximum UAH 150 000 per month). We are looking forward for the new liberalization of currency control by the NBU.

Football: Masters-Bet EUROFANZ 2017 Lviv held the Masters-Bet EUROFANZ festival for football supporters from different countries for the 11th straight year from 29 June to 2 July. Teams of supporters from 24 different national teams and many other club teams came to Lviv to participate in a football tournament, donate gifts to charitable organisations, and to get to know one another. Participating teams this year included: National team fans: Belarus, Finland, France, Georgia, Ireland, Latvia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. Club team fans: AIK (Sweden), Copenhagen (Denmark), Dinamo Bucharest (Romania), Dinamo Minsk (Belarus), Dukla and Spartak Myjava (Slovakia), Feyenoord and Heerenveen (Netherlands), Flora (Estonia), Helsinki (Finland), Newcastle United (England), Slovacko and Zbrojovka Brno (Czech Republic), Zimbru (Moldova), and Karpaty (Ukraine). The tournament concluded with the supporters of Slovenia defeating the supporters of Belarus 2-1. This marks the second win for Slovenia, after claiming victory back in 2011. Fans of Lviv’s Karpaty claimed bronze alongside tournament debutants – supporters of France. Awards were given out for Best Forward – Mateus (Belarus fans), Best Goalkeeper – Nazar (Karpaty fans), Best Player – Blaz Vampl (Slovenia fans), and People’s Choice – Dukla (Banska Bystrica fans). In addition to the football, the players participated in the ‘From European Fans to Lviv Children’ initiative, which saw the teams deliver humanitarian supplies (sportswear, toys, sweets, etc.) to children at Lviv’s orphanages, boarding schools, and hospitals.

Lviv’s Pavlo Korostylov confirmed his place as one of the most promising up-and-coming pistol shooters in the world after winning five medals, including gold medals in the men’s junior 25 m Rapid Fire pistol and 25 m Pistol men junior individual competitions at the ISSF Rifle / Pistol Junior World Championships in Suhl, Germany. The 19-year-old native Leopolitan secured the title in the last series, edging North Korea’s Jang Ji Won 3–2 to take the final 26–25. Korosylov added a silver medal in the men’s junior 10m air pistol final and a bronze in the men’s junior 25m standard pistol final to complete his individual collection. Alongside Maksym Horodynets and Denys Vorona, he added another gold for Ukraine in the men’s junior 25m rapid fire pistol team event. An excellent air pistol shooter, Korostylov is not new to the podium. The two-time junior European champion made a name for himself at the ISSF World Cup last May in Munich by winning the men’s senior 10m air pistol final!

У німецькому місті Зуль 26 червня Коростильов на раз підтвердив, що він є одним з найперспективніших стрільців з пістолета у світі, здобувши золоті медалі у змаганнях у вправі МП-8 (швидкісна стрільба з пістолета серед юніорів на дистанції 25 м.). Дев’ятнадцятирічний львів’янин підтвердив свій титул в останній серії, перемігши стрільця з Північної Кореї Ян Джі Вона з рахунком 3:2, і фінальним рахунком 26:25. П. Коростильов також здобув срібну медаль серед юніорів у вправі ПП-3 (стрільба на дистанції 10 метрів з пневматичного пістолета) та бронзову у вправі МП-10 (стрільба зі стандартного пістолета на дистанції 25 метрів). Разом з Максимом Городинцем та Денисом Вороною він здобув ще одну золоту медаль для України у швидкісній стрільбі з пістолета серед юніорів на дистанції 25 м. Павло Коростильов вже декілька років виступає у міжнародних змаганнях. Минулого травня в Мюнхені на чемпіонаті світу ISSF двократний чемпіон Європи серед юніорів Павло Коростильов переміг у дорослих змагання зі стрільби з пневматичного пістолета на дистанції 10 метрів!

The outdoor pool at the city’s SKA sports complex played host to the final between the home side and Kharkiv Slobozhanets. After a hard-fought encounter, the dramatic final ended with Slobozhanets scoring three unanswered second-half goals to secure the title with a 5-2 score.

Ukraine won the 2017 CEV Volleyball European League championship by knocking off powerhouse FYR Macedonia 3-1 in the gold medal match in the Danish city of Gentofte last month. Coach Ugis Krastins’ team made their first appearance in the competition this season and proved too much for FYR Macedonia, who were playing in their third straight European League final. It was Lviv Kazhany’s Volodymyr Tevkun that put a dagger in their rival’s chances by closing the second set with a strong spike to win 25-22. In addition to Tevkun, Lviv players Yuriy Semenyuk, Gorden Brova, and Yevhen Kisilyuk starred for the European League debutants. Way to go boys!
