anuary has returned, and along with it comes our annual ‘Year in Review’ issue. Flip through to discover all the reasons that made Lviv such a special place to be in 2017. But if you want to know what the city and country has in store, keep reading.

Ukraine is on the brink – but of what, is anyone’s guess. Is it on the brink of an expanded war or another revolution? Or maybe it’s on the brink of a boon in foreign direct investment or developing a cuttingedge alternative energy sector? We know that next year will be pivotal – for both Lviv and Ukraine – and while we don’t know what’s in store just yet, you can expect that: 1. FEDERAL POLITICS WILL RETURN TO THE FOREGROUND

The year ahead will see major political issues once again return as the main topic of conversation. The war in the East could be on the brink. With the withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria and the allowance of Canadian and US companies to sell lethal weapons to Ukraine, there is a real sense that the sides are rearming. Set this against widespread domestic discontent at the pace of reforms. With just over a year before the next Presidential election, President Poroshenko is under increased pressure to reform the health sector and establish anti-corruption courts before a new – and potentially less-friendly – Verkhovna Rada is elected. Add in a dash of rabble-rousing by a former Georgian President, and you can see why the political situation is so dangerous.

2. LOCAL POLITICS WON’T REMAIN IN THE BACKGROUND

The general political discontent will not leave our local leaders untouched either. The most pressing issue – as it has been since June 2016 – is the need for a new garbage disposal plant. Despite assurances from local government that this issue would have been dealt with already, there has been little movement. It takes years to build one of these things, so Lviv City Council needs to get on it! Speaking of years to build, where is the promised stadium that was supposed to hold events like EuroBasket, Eurovision, and the Olympics? If you don’t build it, they won’t come. With the heightened state of political awareness next year, expect local politicians to get called out on these (and other) issues. 3. LVIV WILL WELCOME FAR MORE FOREIGNERS

Perhaps Ukraine’s greatest achievement of 2017 was getting visa-free status to the EU. More than 380,000 Ukrainians have already traveled visa-free to the EU since June, and more than 5 million have received their biometric passports that allows them to do so. Ukraine is making it easier for foreigners to get here too, having added countries like the UAE and Albania to the visa-free list, while introducing an e-visa system for Egyptian travellers and a visa-on-arrival system for the Chinese. Expect this trend to expand in 2018. With aggressive overtures from Lviv International Airport to lure more low-cost air options, and the city’s reputation as Europe’s “last undiscovered gem”, you can be sure that the Western Ukrainian capital sees a lion’s share of these new tourist dollars.

4. LVIV WILL WELCOME FAR MORE LOCALS

Whether its the draw of Carpathian eco-tourism, the unmistakeable culture of the Boykos and Hutsuls, or the myriad mega-events in Ukraine’s most European city, Lviv’s internal tourism numbers are growing and you can expect that trend to continue. Even during Soviet times, travelers would visit Lviv for a ‘taste of Europe’. Now, Lviv and area have picked up the slack for the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian tourists that lost their ‘go-to’ locale following the occupation of Crimea. More than just Bukovel’s ski chalets and Lviv’s bustling cafés, Ukrainians now also travel West for eco-tours, music festivals, and new destination resorts, like the rejuvenated Soviet-era resort in Slavske. This has regional air carriers salivating, and you can expect to see some competition in the domestic air market as SkyUP will offer new, low-cost domestic routes. All this is good news for the Ukraine’s unquestioned leading travel destination – Lviv. 5. LVIV WILL CONTINUE TO SHOW WHY IT’S THE ‘SOUL OF UKRAINE’

With top-notch food festivals for culinary connoisseurs, world-class jazz festivals for the musically-inclined, refurbished architectural gems for the history buffs, and a dizzying variety of hip nightclubs, swanky art shows, and chill cafés – why shouldn’t Lviv remain the ‘Soul of Ukraine’? THIS FRENCH CINEMA NIGHTS 2018 Starting 25 January at Planeta Kino Cinema (Forum Lviv, 7A Pid Dubom St.) Beginning 25 January, Leopolitan cinema lovers and guests of the city will be able to enjoy some of France’s finest films of 2017 at the French Cinema Nights festival. All films – including Le Redoubtable, Happy End, Cherchez la Femme, and Rodin – will be shown in French with Ukrainian subtitles. Screenings will also take place in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and Vinnytsia. Le Redoubtable is Michel Hazanavicius’ rom-com of famed French film director Jean-Luc Godard’s love affair with 17-year-old actress Anne Wiazemsky, who he met on set while filming and went on to marry. Sticking with the romance theme, Jacques Doillon’s biographical drama Rodin is the story of a famous French sculptor’s romance with Camille Claudel. Cherchez la Femme is another romantic comedy. Written and directed by Sou Abadi, it premiered only a few months ago. Michael Haneke’s Happy End is a 107-minute drama that focuses on a family in Calais against the backdrop of the European refugee crisis. Starring Isabelle Huppert and Jean-Louis Trintignant, it was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival last year and premiered in the USA just last month. In early February, Lviv’s charming Opera & Ballet Theatre will host three amazing shows of the ‘When the Fern Blossoms’ opera and ballet. Unique in both genre and stage history, Yevhen Stankevych’s 1977 musical was banned by the Soviet regime and never performed. Why the Soviets were so afraid of folk art is unclear. Maybe it’s the deep origins of modern Ukrainian culture, which from the time of pagans have served the people of this country in times of need. This is explored during the show. Featuring a huge mosaic of contrast, scenes, sketches, and episodes, the concert is an imprint of 20th Century mosaic thinking in the form of poetic cinema.

In collaboration with the composers, choreographers Honoured Artist of Ukraine Sergiy Naenko and Artem Shoshyn, art director and People’s Painter of Ukraine Tadey Ryndzak, conductor Volodomyr Sirenko, and director Vasyl Vovkun, manage to combine avant-garde folklore with present-day technologies to create a new understanding of the essence of neo-folkloric thinking at the end of the 20th Century. The show’s ‘breakthrough’ during its premiere run in December was triumphal, thanks in no small measure to People’s Artist Nina Matvienko. На початку лютого у львівському театрі опери та балету відбудуться три дивовижні оперно-балетні вистави під назвою "Коли цвіте папороть". Унікальний як за жанром, так і за сценічною історією, мюзикл Євгена Станкевича був заборонений у радянські часи і ніколи не виконувався. Причини такої заборони й досі незрозумілі. Можливо, цензура боялась, що, спектакль відкриває історію походження сучасної української культури, яка з прадавніх часів допомагала народу у тяжкі часи. Саме на таку думку наштовхує перегляд вистави. Поєднання мозаїки контрастів, різноманітних сцен та епізодів є відображенням мозаїчного мислення 20-го століття у формі поетичного кіно.

Спільними зусиллями композиторів, хореографів – заслуженого артиста України Сергія Наєнка і Артема Шошина, художнього керівника та народного художника України Тадея Риндзака, диригента Володимира Сіренка та режисера Василя Вовкуна вдалося об'єднати авангардний фольклор із сучасними технологіями й створити нове розуміння сутності неофольклорного мислення наприкінці ХХ століття. NOTRE DAME DE PARIS SHOW 24 February at 16:00 and 20:00 at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Lviv’s beautiful Opera & Ballet Theatre will host the amazing Notre Dame de Paris music show on 24 February. Taking the world by storm since its creation in France in 1998, the musical spectacular has been seen by more than 10 million people worldwide! Lviv’s GameDev conference, a large-scale event for game developers, will take place at Arena Lviv on 27 January. The event is slated to bring together more than 50 speakers and thousands of participants from across Ukraine. GameDev will feature seven streams during the day and will cover all stages of creating a game – from coming up with the idea to entering global markets. You’ll hear success stories, useful tips, and life hacks from developers; you’ll learn how to create your own studio and how to design nice graphics and high-quality sound for your game; and you’ll learn which game mechanics and marketing strategies are best to use. Activities will include panel discussions, workshops, and – what everyone is most excited about – the Yoda Game Award, a competition for game developers that will finish at the conference and where 2017’s Best Studio Game and Best Indie Game will be awarded. Rostyslav Kisil, the founder and President of the Meest Group international postal logistics company, shares his ideas about the formula for success and his company’s innovative projects with Lviv Today.

With 28 years of international experience, the Meest Group has seen success in more than 20 different countries. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT: VISA−FREE REGIME WITH THE EU Ukrainians celebrated a monumental moment in their shift towards Europe when the EU introduced visa-free travel to the 30 Schengen Zone countries on 11 June. Since then, Ukrainians wishing to travel to Europe for tourism, business trips, visiting relatives, or attending events like conferences, concerts, festivals, sports competitions, or beach recreation, no longer need to go through the expensive, time-consuming, and frustrating process of getting a visa. While vi-

sas are still required for places like the UK and Ireland, other countries like Norway and Iceland are included. Visa-free travel was approved after long delays in implementing Ukraine’s embattled reforms and fulfils a EU promise to cement ties with the country following the broad trade and political association agreement sealed in 2014. Lviv is now working on boosting European integration through cheaper rail links and more lowcost air connections to EU cities.

BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR: TETYANA ROMANOVSKA, General Director at Lviv’s International Airport Since her appointment in 2016 as the General Director of Lviv’s D. Halytskyi International Airport, Tetyana Romanovska has made quite a name for herself. The results of her active work have empowered Lviv’s potential for business growth through the increase in new flights and frequency of existing flights. In addition to increasing options to such European destinations as Rome, Madrid, Thessaloniki, Munich, and Vienna, she was able to attract Italian low-coster Ernest Airlines in October. The airline added flights to Venice and Bergamo to its Naples route last month. Her continued

negotiations with airlines across Europe brings hopes that more low-cost airlines are on their way in 2018, like Romania’s Blue Air, which will fly to a number of European centres, including Rome, Milan, Barcelona, Brno, and Brussels. Summer routes to Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia are also on their way. Considering that the airport’s renovated 3.3 km runway is fit for larger planes that serve longdistance routes, Romanovska is in the process of opening up two transatlantic routes – to New York, USA and Toronto, Canada, destinations with large Ukrainian diasporas. She is also look-

ing to attract Britain’s EasyJet, a Spanish airline, and the crown jewel of low cost airlines – RyanAir. She had a deal in place last spring with the behemoth airline before it was scuttled by greedy higher-ups at Boryspil Airport / UIA. Not forgetting Ukraine’s eastern neighbours, Romanovska hopes to once again attract visitors to the Soviet-era spas (since upgraded) at Morshyn and Truskavets. She is actively looking to open more flights to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. It looks like 2018 will finally be the year that Leopolitans can travel in comfort without breaking the bank.

Socks. They go on feet. They exist under shoes and below pant legs. They’re for wicking sweat and avoiding blisters and for making the everyday act of putting one foot in front of the other generally more pleasant. And so, aesthetically, they usually lean utilitarian. Not so in the case of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This guy has fun with his socks and often dresses his feet to theme. Case in point – he wore brightly coloured Eid Mubarak socks to an event that fell on the Islamic holiday marking the end of Ramadan, and NATO socks to a recent NATO meeting. Some even go so far as to call it “sock diplomacy”. When a government delegation visited Canada in late October, PM Volodymyr Groysman enlarged the Canadian PM’s collection with a gift of socks by Lviv’s-own Accent and Dodo Socks. These colourful socks represent the recent free trade relations between the countries and – carrying the inscription ‘Lviv’ on them – are the city’s best promotion of 2017!

Так, він підібрав собі яскраві шкарпетки, відзначаючи з канадськими мусульманами свято Рамадану, і шкарпетки з емблемою НАТО на нещодавній зустрічі членів цієї організації. GROWING INDUSTRY ЗРОСТАЮЧА OF THE YEAR: ГАЛУЗЬ РОКУ: ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES

АЛЬТЕРНАТИВНІ ДЖЕРЕЛА ЕНЕРГІЇ

Due to our fortunate geographical position, the introduction of new government policies aimed at reducing Ukraine’s fossil fuel use, and a favourable legal framework, Western Ukraine’s alternative energy sector is considered to be one of the fastest-growing and most attractive industries for investment in the country. The latest trend is the increase of solar panel installation in the region, says Ukraine’s Agency for Energy Efficiency and Savings. September saw the opening of LLC Syntez Solar’s new solar power plant in the town of Boryslav in the Lviv region. The most powerful in Ukraine, the plant consists of two parts – a surface and roof – and is furnished with solar modules. October saw the Eco-Optima Group launch two power plants in the region, at a cost of more than €36 million – a solar plant in Yavoriv and a wind power station, featuring 10 windmills, in Starosambirsky. Finally, December saw the Leo Solar Energy photovoltaic station open in Malekhiv, with a capacity of 1000 kW. As solar power plants increase the share of alternative energy and reduce the use of hydrocarbons in the production of energy, look for this trend to continue in 2018. For instance, the Atlas Global Energy group will complete the first 20 mW stage of a wind power plant near Skole, with a further stage increasing its capacity to 50 mW.

Остання тенденція – це збільшення кількості встановлених сонячних панелей в регіоні, як вважає Державне агентство з енергоефективності та енергозбереження України. У вересні відкрилась нова сонячна електростанція ТОВ "Синтез Солар" у Бориславі. Найпотужніша в Україні, вона складається з двох частин – наземної та дахової. У жовтні група Eco-Optima запустила дві електростанції в регіоні вартістю понад 36 мільйонів євро – сонячну електростанцію в Яворові та вітрову електростанцію з 10 вітряками у Старосамбірському районі. Нарешті, в грудні було відкрито фотоелектричну станцію Лео-Солар-Енерджі в Малехові під Львовом потужністю 1000 кВт. Оскільки електростанції на сонячних батареях збільшують частку альтернативної енергії та зменшують використання вуглеводнів у виробництві енергії, ця тенденція буде продовжуватись і в 2018 році. Так, група Atlas Global Energy завершить перший етап вітрової електростанції потужністю 20 мВт біля Сколе, з подальшим збільшенням її потужності до 50 мВт.

VIP GUEST OF THE YEAR: JAPAN It has been 25 years since Japan and Ukraine established diplomatic relations, so to mark the occasion 2017 was named as the ‘Year of Japan in Ukraine’. With the aim of improving Ukrainian-Japanese relations, and strengthening business and tourism ties, festivities kicked off in Lviv in March with the World of Kabuki, an elegant art exhibition presented by the Japanese Embassy at the Sheptytsky National Museum. The exhibit highlighted a unique part of

the heritage of world art – authentic prints of Kabuki theatre. The Japan External Trade Organisation brought a delegation of 21 Japanese companies to the city in March to discuss trade and investment opportunities. April saw the Japanese Ambassador and his wife visit the Western Ukrainian capital to plant 20 sakura trees in St. John Paul II Park alongside Mayor Sadovyi. Later, he joined Lviv Region Head Oleh Synyutka in planting six more at

the Lviv State Administration building. May saw Lviv Polytechnic University host ‘Japan Days’, a series of lectures by the Japanese Embassy. The institution was an appropriate choice, as linguistics students at the university have been required to study Japanese since 2000. September was the grand opening of the Global Japan Office at Lviv’s I. Franko National University, an initiative designed to increase student exchanges between the countries.

частині світової мистецької спадщини – понад 100 творів японської графіки ХІХ століття. Делегація Японської зовнішньоторговельної організації прибула до Львова в березні з представниками 21 японської компанії для обговорення торгових та інвестиційних можливостей. У квітні японський посол та його дружина відвідали західноукраїнську столицю, щоб висадити 20 сакур у парку Івана Павла II разом із мером Львова А. Садовим. Пізніше високі японські гості висадили такі ж деревця біля

будівлі Львівської обласної держадміністрації разом з її головою Олегом Синюткою. У травні в приміщенні Львівського політехнічного університету відбулись "Дні Японії" з циклом лекцій японського посольства. Потрібно зазначити, що студенти Політехніки вивчають японську мову з 2000 року. У вересні відбулось урочисте відкриття Global Japan Office у Львівському національному університеті ім. І. Франка, ініціатива, спрямована на збільшення обміну студентами між нашими країнами.

ANNIVERSARY OF THE YEAR: 60 YEARS OF LVIV TV During the day, Lviv has its many monuments, churches, and statues to keep your interest. But when the night falls, the city’s most remarkable feature becomes its multicoloured TV tower – which, at 192m, is Lviv’s tallest building. After it was illuminated in 2007, locals nicknamed it Lviv’s Eiffel Tower. Television has a long history in Lviv, with the television centre and the broadcasting tower in the High Castle were built in 1957. The TV studio was built on the site of the former Austrian gunpowder depot, and broadcasting began shortly thereafter. Initially in those Sovietera days, only the programs of Lviv television were broadcast – mainly in Ukrainian. From 1962, Lviv TV was connected to Kyiv and Moscow and local programs were gradually replaced with others. At the same time, Lviv became famous for it TV-set production, which manufactured sets for the entire USSR, and a new media-era began in

the city. The cost of each set covered the cost of the broadcasting; in other words, television was partially funded at the expense of producing the TV equipment. Lviv TV was broadcast to much of Western Ukraine, but occasionally Lviv-produced programs could get USSR-wide coverage. The station produced musicals, concerts, and music shows, launching the careers of many Soviet pop stars. It was also a tool for propaganda and presented the city in a Socialist light. TV viewing was an important activity in the life of the city and many Leopolitans would gather outside to watch broadcasts in the street. People would visit each other just to watch TV. It was a way to socialize, communicate, have fun, and learn about the rest of the world. Many things have changed over the past 60 years, but Lviv’s television tower stands as a marker of stability in the city centre.

РІЧНИЦЯ РОКУ: 60 РОКІВ ЛЬВІВСЬКОГО ТЕЛЕБАЧЕННЯ Якщо вдень у Львові можна побачити численні пам'ятники, собори й монументи, то з настанням сутінків і нічної пори найкраще видно яскраво підсвічену міську телевежу, яка, маючи висоту 192 м, є найвищою спорудою Львова. Після встановлення підсвітки на вежі у 2007 році, дехто в місті став називати її львівською Ейфелевою вежею. Телебачення у Львові має довгу історію, адже телевізійний центр і телевізійна вежа на Високому замку були побудовані ще у 1957 році. Телестудію звели на місці колишнього австрійського військового складу, і мовлення почалося незабаром після цього. Спочатку транслювалися лише програми львівського телебачення – переважно українською мовою. З 1962 року Львівське телебачення було підключене до Києва та Москви, і місцеві програми поступово відступили на задній план. У ті ж часи у Львові починається виробництво перших телевізорів – знаменитої "Верховини", "Огоньок", а пізніше – "Електронів", що прославились

на весь СРСР, і з ними в місті розпочалася нова медіа-епоха. Вартість кожного телевізора покривала вартість трансляції; іншими словами, телебачення частково фінансувалось за рахунок виробництва телевізорів. Львівське телебачення транслювало свої програми на більшу частину Західної України, а іноді львівські програми виходили на всій території Союзу. На Львівському телебаченні створювались мюзикли, концерти та музичні шоу, з яких розпочинались кар'єри багатьох радянських естрадних зірок. Телебачення було також інструментом пропаганди і презентувало досягнення соціалізму. ARRIVAL OF THE YEAR: ВІДКРИТТЯ РОКУ: METROPOLITAN ІНФОРМАЦІЙНО− SHEPTYTSKY INFORMATION ДОСЛІДНИЦЬКИЙ ЦЕНТР RESEARCH CENTRE МИТРОПОЛИТА ШЕПТИЦЬКОГО Lviv’s Ukrainian Catholic University – the first Catholic university opened in the former USSR – festively opened the Metropolitan Sheptytsky Information Research Centre in September. The first building of its kind in post-Soviet Ukraine, the centre includes a humanities library, academic and research spaces, and public spaces to serve the community. On the architectural side, ‘openness’ plays a major role in the design of the building and is reflected in the barrier-free ground floor. The area contains reading, exhibition, and conference areas in addition to a university bookshop and café. The upper levels are more academic in nature, and feature an open-stack collection, various reading spaces, quiet study areas, and group work rooms. Both the public and academic areas are organized around a vertical atrium that always affords a wonderful view to the beautiful Stryski Park located adjacent to the campus.

У львівському католицькому університеті – першому такому університеті, відкритому на території колишнього СРСР, у вересні був урочисто відкритий інформаційно-дослідницький центр Митрополита Шептицького. До складу центру входить бібліотека гуманітарних наук, наукові та дослідницькі приміщення, а також громадські приміщення. З архітектурної сторони "відкритість" відіграє важливу роль у дизайні будівлі та відображається на першому поверсі без бар'єрів. Тут розташовані читальні, виставкові та конференц-зали, а також університетська книгарня й кафе. Верхні поверхи є більш академічними за своїм характером, містять відкриту збірку, читальні столи, тихі зони для навчання та кімнати для групової роботи. Усі ці приміщення розташовані навколо просторого атріуму, з якого відкривається чудовий огляд Стрийського парку, що знаходиться поруч із університетським містечком.

CULTURAL PROJECT OF THE YEAR: LvivMozArt FESTIVAL Considered to be the ‘festival capital of Ukraine’, Lviv has earned this enviable reputation by hosting numerous festivals that come in all shapes and sizes – from mouthwatering culinary feasts to world-class sports and music events to quieter, intellectual gatherings. With events for all kinds of interests and tastes, it can be difficult to stand out in the city’s exceptionally busy festival calendar. That’s why we recognize LvivMozArt – a spectacular addition to Lviv’s busy festival scene. Held in August, this festival of classical music and opera is dedicated

to the musical heritage of Mozart’s youngest son, Franz Xaver Mozart, who lived and worked in Lviv for 30 years (1808-38). Event-goers enjoyed concerts from some of Europe’s most famous orchestras and opera singers, while professional musicians, actors, directors, and classical-theatre aficionados attended a series of workshops and lectures. “This project gathered the best musicians of Ukraine – and indeed the world!” says festival director and conductor of Graz, Austria’s Opera and Philharmonic orchestras, ex-Leopolitan Oksana Lyniv.

BEST CULTURAL PROMOTION OF THE YEAR: "INSO−LVIV" (INTERNATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA) OF LVIV PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY The "INSO-Lviv" Orchestra, founded in 1998, is today considered to be one of Ukraine’s finest symphony orchestras. Each year the group travels Europe and each year the tour gets longer. The Radio Swiss Classic award-winning symphony takes part in many international events, both at home and abroad. So it was no surprise when in June, French production company Paramax Films recorded a live performance at the Alfa Jazz Fest alongside the world-renowned Avishai Cohen Trio for a 2018 broadcast on Mezzo Classic-Jazz TV. The group now serves as the

orchestra-in-residence at several international festivals and competitions and starred at Lviv’s LvivMozArt festival in August and Austria’s Johannes Brahms International Competition in September. Each year the orchestra brings to life some of Ukraine’s grandest and most unique musical projects, thanks in part to the hard work of its creative advisor Iolanta Pryshlyak. "INSO-Lviv" believes in the power of music, and strives to fulfill its mission of cultural diplomacy by making Lviv known to the world through the uniting power of music.

CULTURAL HERITAGE PRESERVATION: THE STATUE OF LIBERTY SCULPTURE Prospekt Svobody received a beautiful facelift in January when Lviv’s very-own Statue of Liberty sculpture on top of the Museum of Ethnography and Arts & Crafts was reopened after a €14000 facelift. Sitting atop the dome on the building, the statue is one of the world’s most unique reincarnations of New

York’s famed statue as 19th-Century Polish sculptor Leandro Marconi has her sitting. The University of Banking initiated the restoration in 2015 by partnering with students at Lviv’s National Agrarian and Polytechnic universities to hold an ‘Auction of Hope’ charity fundraiser. In the end, the group raised €9000,

with Lviv City Council pitching in the rest. In addition to Lady Liberty herself, the ‘Agriculture’ and ‘Industry’ statues that flank her were also restored, as well as the inscription on the shield beneath them. You can’t miss it now as the crown and flame on the statue have been gilded with gold leaf!

ЗБЕРЕЖЕННЯ КУЛЬТУРНОЇ СПАДЩИНИ: ЛЬВІВСЬКА "СТАТУЯ СВОБОДИ" Одна з найімпозантніших будівель проспекту Свободи засяяла відреставрованими фігурами на її фронтоні. Реставрація, яку провели молоді майстри, випускники Львівської політехніки і на яку було витрачено близько 14000 євро, була завершена у січні 2017 року. Творіння скульптора Леонарда Марконі є, мабуть, однією з найбільш унікальних у світі реінкарнацій знаменитої ста-

туї з Нью-Йорка. Ідею реставрації у 2015 році запропонував Університету банківської справи відомий львівський фотограф Сергій Смірнов, а потім її розвинули спільно студенти й викладачі Львівського національного аграрного та політехнічного університетів, провівши благодійний "Аукціон надії". Їм вдалось зібрати понад 9000 євро, а Львівська міська рада доповнила

необхідну суму. Поряд з центральною фігурою композиції, що символізує "Ощадність" на куполі теперішнього етнографічного музею також були відновлені фігури "Сільське господарство" та "Промисловість", а також напис на щиті під ними. Urban running has seen a spike in popularity in Ukraine – and in Lviv in particular – over the last few years as can be seen by the impressive number of participants competing in the numerous races organised in the city. April saw runners begin Lviv’s annual Gorgany Half Marathon at its marquee starting point in front of the city’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre. In May, Leopolitan runners competed in Red Bull’s Wings for Life World Run, a global charity event where everybody starts at the same time and the finish line chases you! Japan’s Fujikura Automotive Ukraine plant organised the second Happy Kilometre charity run in September and raised nearly €1250 – over one-fifth of the total cost for a surgical LED lamp luvis-L200 for the city’s Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital. And the Lviv Grand Prix Half Marathon – the final leg of the Run Ukraine running league – raced through the city in October, where Mayor Andriy Sadovyi greeted the over 2000 runners and many celebrities. Half of the money raised by entrants to the two kilometer race was donated to the needs of ATO veterans.

У квітні у нашому місті відбувся щорічний півмарафон "Горгани", який стартував на площі перед оперним театром. У травні львівські бігуни змагалися в забігу Red Bull's Wings for Life World Run – глобальній благодійній акції, де всі стартують одночасно, а фінішна лінія наздоганяє учасників. Японська фірма Fujikura Automotive Ukraine організувала другий благодійний забіг під назвою "Щасливий кілометр" у вересні, який зібрав 1250 євро – майже одну п'яту частину загальної вартості хірургічної світлодіодної лампи luvis-L200 для лікарні Охматдит. У жовтні відбувся півмарафон Гран-прі Львова – фінал змагань Ukraine, за участю понад 2000 бігунів, а також мера Львова Андрія Садового та багатьох знаменитостей. Половина грошей, зібраних учасниками на дистанції два кілометри, була передана на користь ветеранів АТО.

SPORTS PERSONALITIES OF THE YEAR: FUTURE STAR – KHRYSTYNA POHRANYCHNA

Looking to the future, Lviv’s junior gymnast Khrystyna Pohranychna has staked a claim to be one of the world’s most promising and successful rhythmic gymnasts. Her 2017 was quite remarkable, where she won 25 different gold medals at events across Europe! The 14-year-old dynamo walked away with titles from tournaments in Estonia, Hungary, Israel, Portugal, Slovakia, and Germany, as well as the Ukrainian Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship. She is an Olympic medal threat in every event, as her titles came in hoops, clubs, ribbon, ball, and the coveted all-around. Her incredible accomplishments in 2017 saw Lviv City Council recognize her as the youngest-ever ‘Leopolitan of the Year’. Still three years out from the Olympics, keep your eye on Khrystyna as she continues to line her trophy case with well-deserved awards!

PAVLO KOROSTYLOV It’s been quite a year for Leopolitan sharpshooter Pavlo Korostylov. At just 20 years old, he added two junior world championship gold medals – and five in total – to his previous two junior European crowns. Later he added two European championship golds, his first senior level titles. Then in September, he set a new junior world record on his way to a silver at the prestigious ISSF World Cup in India. Those accomplishments led him to be named Lviv’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ in both June and October. Already a Youth Olympics champion, Pavlo qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics based on an incredible 5th-place performance at the European Games in 2015 – when he was just 18! Keep your eye on Pavlo to become Lviv’s next Olympic champion!

Для 20-річного львівського стрільця Павла Коростильова цей рік був дуже успішним. Він додав дві золоті медалі чемпіонату світу серед юніорів – і п'ять загалом – до своїх попередніх двох юніорських нагород. Пізніше він здобув ще дві золоті медалі чемпіонату Європи – перші в розряді дорослих. Потім у вересні він встановив новий світовий рекорд серед юніорів, здобуваючи срібло на престижних змаганнях кубку світу ISSF в Індії. За ці досягнення він двічі був визнаний львівським "Спортсменом місяця" – у червні та жовтні. Будучи вже чемпіоном Олімпіади серед юніорів, Павло пройшов відбір на літні Олімпійські ігри 2016 року з неймовірним результатом – 5 місце на Європейських іграх 2015 року – коли йому було всього 18 років! Мабуть, ми можемо сподіватись, що Павло таки стане наступним олімпійським чемпіоном зі Львова!

Минулий рік склався вдало для неї – вона виграла 25 різних золотих медалей на змаганнях у Європі! Чотирнадцятирічна гімнастка здобувала титули на турнірах в Естонії, Угорщині, Ізраїлі, Португалії, Словаччині та Німеччині, а також на Українському чемпіонаті з художньої гімнастики. Вона прагне здобути золоту медаль у кожних змаганнях, виступаючи у вправах з об-

ручами, булавами, стрічкою, м'ячем та в багатоборстві. За її спортивні досягнення у 2017 році Львівська міська рада визнала її наймолодшою "Львів’янкою року". До Олімпіади ще кілька років, тож слідкуйте за успіхами Христини, яка продовжує поповнювати свою колекцію спортивних трофеїв.

Lviv’s talented karateka Kateryna Kryva has dreams of Olympic championships of her own after becoming a double European champion in May. In an off year for the world championships, the tournament was the biggest on her 2017 calendar. Not only did she march her way to gold in the kumite u50kg event, but she helped Ukraine triumph in the team event as well. Her results saw her win double honours as both Lviv’s and Ukraine’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ in May. Ever since her 4th-place finish at the European Games in 2015, the 25-year-old regularly sees podiums at Karate Premiere League events. This student of the Fencing, Boxing, and National Uniforms at Lviv State University of Physical Culture is a surefire favourite to capture karate’s first Olympic medal when the sport makes its debut at the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan.

KATERYNA KRYVA Талановита львівська каратистка Катерина Крива мріє про олімпійські титули після того, як вона стала подвійною європейською чемпіонкою у травні. Оскільки у 2017 не проводились чемпіонати світу, цей турнір став найбільшою подією у світі карате того року. Вона на лише здобула золоту медаль в категорії куміте до 50 кг, але й доклалась до успіху збірної Україні в груповому заліку. За ці успіхи на татамі в травні вона була визнана "Спортсменкою місяця" у Львові й в Україні. Розпочавши свою міжнародну спортивну кар’єру 4 місцем на Європейських іграх 2015 року, 25-річна спортсменка регулярно підіймається на подіуми Прем'єр-ліги карате. Студентка кафедри фехтування, боксу й національних одноборств Львівського державного університету фізичної культури – вона є справжнім фаворитом, щоб завоювати першу олімпійську медаль в карате, коли ця спортивна дисципліна дебютує на літній Олімпіаді-2020 в Токіо. ANIMAL−FRIENDLY INITIATIVES OF THE YEAR: UKRAINE’S FIRST PET ADOPTION CENTRE & DOMAZHYR BEAR SANCTUARY These are exciting times for people that care about LION AWARDS animals in Lviv! Thanks to the support of Leopolitan animal rescuers, volunteers, and the Lev public utility company, Lviv welcomed Ukraine’s first and only Animal Adoption Centre in June. As animal welfare takes a greater place in the consciousness 2017 of Ukrainians, Leopolitans have stepped up to fill a need. There are so many wonderful pets at the Lviv Adoption Centre – cats and dogs of all shapes, ages, and sizes are waiting for a loving home and for someone to share their lives with. Every pet is healthy, vaccinated, and has a veterinary passport. Future owners can get all the information about caring for their new pet right at the centre, as well as tips on how the family can adapt to the new arrival. International animal rescue company Four Paws opened up the Domazhyr Bear Sanctuary near Lviv in October. The shelter’s 20 hectares can accommodate up to 30 mistreated animals, an important step towards ending the captivity of bears used in bear baiting. As the result of a Four Paws campaign, a new animal protection law was passed banning the hunting of bears and wolves with the use of dogs. It also forbids the staging of bear baiting contests and the running of bear baiting stations. Aiming to put an end to this inhumane practice, the Domazhyr Bear Sanctuary provides a natural habitat for the abused bears. Led by hospitable and knowledgeable guides, visitors won’t want to miss the fantastic 40-minute guided tour. Beginning in April, tours start every hour and are free – but feel free to leave a charitable donation for the bears.

ІНІЦІАТИВА РОКУ ЗА ПОКРАЩЕННЯ УМОВ ЖИТТЯ ТВАРИН: ПЕРШИЙ В УКРАЇНІ ЦЕНТР АДОПЦІЇ ДОМАШНІХ ТВАРИН ТА ПРИТУЛОК ДЛЯ ВЕДМЕДІВ ДОМАЖИР В наш час люди все більше починають по-справжньому піклуватись про тварин. Завдяки підтримці львівських рятувальників тварин, волонтерів та комунального підприємства "Лев" у червні в місті відкрився перший та поки що єдиний в Україні центр адопції тварин. У цьому новому центрі у Львові є багато чудових домашніх тварин – котів та собак усіх порід, віку та розміру, які чекають на затишний дім і когось, щоб пригорнутись. Усі тварини здорові, вакциновані і мають ветеринарний паспорт. Майбутні власники можуть отримати всю інформацію про догляд за своїми новими чотириногими друзями безпосередньо в центрі. Міжнародна організація порятунку тварин "Чотири лапи" відкрила в містечку Домажир притулок для ведмедів у жовтні. У притулку на 20 гектарів будуть розміщені до 30 тварин, яких звільнили з нелегальних приватних звіринців. В результаті кампанії, проведеною організацією "Чотири лапи", було прийнято новий закон про охорону тварин, який забороняє полювання на ведмедів та вовків із застосуванням собак. Цей закон також забороняє проводити ведмежі бої та бої з собаками. Прагнучи покласти край цій нелюдській практиці, Домажирський притулок для ведмедів забезпечує природне середовище існування для ведмедів, яких тримали у неволі. Гостинні провідники, які багато знають про цих тварин, проводять безкоштовні 40-хвилинні екскурсії. Починаючи з квітня, екскурсії проводяться щогодини, а наприкінці кожен може залишити благодійну пожертву для харчування та утримання ведмедів.

Yulia was first scouted by OK’S models agency at one of the popular social media pages when she was just 18. Her uniquely strong, classic look makes her a standout on the runway and the young Yulia has the potential to carve out a rock-solid career in fashion. She’s multitalented too – she studies at Lviv’s National Art Academy and likes to travel when she’s not on the runway.

REPROCESSING IN UKRAINE, 2018:

lot was said about Ukraine’s perspective to gain a position of a main European manufacturing outsourcer. The trend is caused by a lot of internal and external factors. Reasonable labor cost and high labor culture together with the customs regime of reprocessing available in Ukraine are among of them. For the information: the mentioned customs regime allows European companies to assemble, pack or reprocess the goods in any other way without paying any VAT or customs duties in Ukraine at all. By applying this approach, the goods produced remain the origin and a customs regime of a European country. Businesses save here greatly on the cost of the manufacturing. However, lately European businesses got another, more sophisticated, but much more promising possibility – to reprocess the goods in a way that a final product gains the Ukrainian origin. To distinguish the two options lets elaborate a little bit on the facts.

Option 1 (further to be called – “tolling”) provides for: • No import/export conducted; • The manufacturing process is physically moved to UA (independent company or an affiliated one); • No VAT, no customs duties; • Requires a permit from Ukrainian customs authorities. The Option 2 (let’s call it – “Ukrainian origin gaining”) foresees: • Import from European country; • The manufacturing of a product is done in Ukraine (independent company or an affiliated one); • Product gets the Ukrainian origin (why then one should call the option like that); • Export to final markets (European country); • Operation is a subject to VAT, customs duties to UA and from UA. What’s the benefit you will ask? How additional duties, VAT payment, export-import administration will help to reduce the price of manufacturing? 1 2

You might have heard (majority certainly had) about Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (“DCFTA”) between Ukraine and the EU, which has entered into force recently. The agreement lowered the customs duties on a tremendous list of Ukrainian goods, widely opening the EU market. Together with 0% duty rates on UA products, DCFTA introduced the origin rules between UA and the EU. To apply preferences while exporting from UA, one is required to prove UA origin of goods. Based on the origin of the raw materials and the extend the goods reprocessed, different approaches to the origin rules exist. As you also might have heard, Ukraine has a free trade agreement with EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland), setting the preferential rates for a list of goods and rules of origin similar to DCFTA. Off course, these rules could be (and should be) a subject of a separate article. To make the story short, we will talk only about so called ‘cumulation’ and ‘reprocessing that goes beyond the minimal operations’ (more than cutting, peeling, putting in cans, labeling etc.). This approach to the origin gaining allows to process the materials from the EU in Ukraine and gain the UA origin for the finished products as if the raw materials were taken from EFTA. On this stage the reader most probably will ask: “Ok, what is the difference between the tolling system and Ukrainian origin gaining? You still save on the labor cost, you set off VAT while exporting against paying while importing to UA1 (additional efforts), you (probably) pay no duty while exporting and possibly pay some while importing to UA. So, what is the benefit of reprocessing using this option?” The benefit is not obvious at first. To explain the point, we need to return to the latest happenings in Ukrainian European integration. On November 8, Regional Convention on panEuro-Mediterranean preferential rules of origin (PEM Convention) was adopted by Ukraine2. The PEM convention sets the origin rules for the EU countries, EFTA countries, participants of the Barcelona Process (Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Tunisia and others), Balkan countries. Now when you have recognized a wide geopolitical baggage of author, I would like to explain the influence of such on the Ukrainian reprocessing perspective. The PEM convention brings together all the European countries (not only the EU, which is important) with Ukraine under the same origin definition rules as we have with EFTA states and the EU separately. Let’s also keep in mind, that EFTA states and the EU have a lot of protective duties between each other. But, in case if the goods from the EU are reprocessed in Ukraine and

exported to EFTA states (and vice versa) with gaining of the UA origin – both free trade agreements (DCFTA and EFTA – UA free trade agreements) are applicable. The only missing point (till now) was the Ukrainian origin. Earlier, with the ‘cumulation’ rule you could produce the Ukrainian origin goods from EFTA origin raw materials. However, such would still be an EFTA states product while exporting to the EU (unless sufficient processing is applied which is not available for the group of goods – i.e. fish, meat, part of the dairy products). The same appeared to be with regards to the EU raw materials exported to EFTA states after being reprocessed in Ukraine. But now, PEM gathered all the European countries (and not only European) and the unified rules of origin definition. That allows the raw materials from one Party to gain the origin of the reprocessing Party while export to third Party of the Convention. To make it simple, I’ll provide the example based, for instance, on the Norwegian seafood: Norwegian raw material (i.e. mackerel) is imported to Ukraine with 0% duty. At the same time the similar mackerel is imported from Norway to the EU under the general duty – 20%. The customs duty of the reprocessed mackerel (dried, salted fillets in brine) exported from Norway to the EU is 14%. While the same ready product of the Ukrainian origin will have a 0 % duty being exported to the EU. As of today, most of the Norwegian fish is already being reprocessed in the EU saving on the manufacturing costs. At the same time, the EU is one of the key markets for Norwegian seafood companies. Thus, in case, the existing state of play (on the mackerel example) will be changed towards Ukraine as a reprocessing point, the exporter will save 20 % of duty on a raw mackerel and 14 % of duty on the finished product in addition to tremendous benefit from the manufacturing cost in Ukraine. This option is not promising, this option is an astonishing solution for reprocessing of the goods in Ukraine, when the source of raw material and the end market are situated in different European countries. Q: Dear Mr. Malskyy, I've recently heard about the fact that the State Labor Service focuses attention on combating shadow employment and in 2018 will strengthen the control. Could you please briefly explain how would this control look like? Kind regards, Otto. Dear Otto, the interest around the inspections of the State Labor Service of Ukraine was reinforced by high fines for violating labor legislation and the adoption of a new procedure for state control supervision over the observance of labor legislation, which defines a clear and structured procedure for such control. The fines are tied to the minimum wage (which is constantly changing towards the increase) and can reach up to 372 300 UAH (approximately 11 000 euros). They may be imposed for non-legalizing of an employment contract with an employee, for violation of the established time period for payment of wages to employees, for non-admission of an inspector or non-provision of the necessary documents for inspection, etc. Meanwhile, the new procedure determines the types of inspections (planned and unscheduled) and the legal basis for conducting them, documenting and deciding on the results of the inspection, the application of measures of influence regarding the violation of labor legislation, the procedure for appealing the inspection activities, advising employers and employees on the most effective ways to comply with labor legislation. Also, one of the novelties is the opportunity of the State Labor Service to exchange information with the State Tax Service and Pension Fund, about facts that contains indications of using non-legalized workers and violations of labor legislation.

The participants discussed the current state of affairs in the country, the drivers of changes, and conducted an excursion from the past to the future. According to Mr. Hrytsak, in the marathon for the achievement of well-being we have to overcome the last kilometer. "The political will already exists, but unfortunately there is no team that would implement it." Summing up, Mr. Hrytsak quoted Nasim Taleb: "big changes happen unexpectedly!" We are on the right track, we have to get together and reach the expected finish! Such activity of controlling authorities creates a number of risks for enterprises, where specialists are not employed on the basis labor contracts, but cooperate under the terms prescribed with civil agreements on execution of work or provision of services (as with Individual Private Entrepreneurs). The eyes of nearly two billion people will be on 40 of Ukraine’s finest winter athletes as they head to compete at the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in Korea next month. Not known as a traditional winter sports powerhouse, Ukraine pumps fully half of their winter sports funding into biathlon (€17.9 million). You’ll want to be sure to check out the women’s relay team as they try to repeat their 2014 glory while in Asia. With only seven winter Olympic medals in six Winter Olympics, there are few medal opportunities outside biathlon. Be sure to catch figure skating, cross-country skiing, and aerials freestyle skiing for Ukraine’s best opportunities. Lviv in Korea: Lviv is sending a number of experienced athletes to Korea this year, including lugers Olena Shkhumova, Roman Zakharkiv, and Anton Dukach, as well as snowboarder Annamari Dancha. This will be the third Olympics for Annamari and Roman, Olena’s second, and Anton’s very first experience. The reason so many lugers come from Lviv is because the national team is based in Western Ukraine. The team trains in Kremenets (Ternopil oblast), while Lviv’s Berkut sports school teaches the sport. ne of Ukraine’s most popular and successful athletes, biathlete Olena Pidhrushna has been a mainstay on the national team for over a decade. Over the years, she has won multiple World Cups, European and World Championships, and Ukraine’s second-ever Winter Olympic gold medal at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She was Ukraine’s sportswoman of the year in 2013, is the former Deputy Minister for Sport, and is even featured on a postage stamp. In short, there’s not a lot she hasn’t accomplished. “I’ve been fortunate to see so much success internationally over the last 10 years,” Olena tells Lviv Today. “And to raise the profile of biathlon in Ukraine to a new level.” Competing in her third Olympic Games, that level of experience has given her a different outlook on the experience.

REVOLUTIONARY GOLD Times were different in 2014. Pidhrushna was the reigning world champion in sprint, had medaled in both the pursuit and the relay, and was very focused on achieving Ukraine’s second-ever Winter Olympic gold medal. “We had six races that are stretched out over the course of the entire competition. I don’t even have a favourite story from the athletes village”, she recalls. “We were just trying to stay focused.” But staying focused was not as easy as it sounds. As Olena and her teammates prepared for the relay they’d go on to win, Kyiv was burning and dozens of protesters were being shot and killed by government snipers. "Of course we were upset, but we tried to focus our attention on biathlon”, she says. “On the last lap of the relay, I thought about the shootings and that gave me strength. I thought – how could I let fatigue overcome me when people are dying back home. No, I couldn’t allow that and I went even faster.” It’s that moment more than anything that defines her Olympic experiences to date. “I felt how the whole country was supporting us and in those moments they seemed to be carrying me on their wings”, she says. “After the race, we were finally able to let go of our emotions and let the tears flow. These were incredible feelings.”

A NEW GOLD TO REMEMBER Returning now as Olympic champion, Olena is looking to give Ukrainians another Olympic moment to cherish. With her three relay teammates all ranked in the Top 10 in the World Cup rankings, there is every reason to believe its in the cards. “All of our girls are very experienced and talented”, she explains. “And we have a great desire to realise our dreams.” Her fame and success has seen her named one of 40 Olympic athletes that Visa has sponsored worldwide. This has its advantages. “Thanks to the sponsorship”, she tells Lviv Today, “My parents and my personal trainer are able to join me.” But it also brings its burdens. “Success means responsibility to both our fans and are young athletes”, she says. “I want to be an example for them.” In the meantime, let’s hope Olena can find some time to mingle with the other athletes at the Olympic Village next month. "Мені пощастило, разом з командою, досягти багатьох успіхів на міжнародній арені за останні 10 років, а також підняти біатлон в Україні на новий рівень", розповідає Олена. Увесь цей досвід та вміння стануть в пригоді Олені на її третіх Олімпійських іграх, де вона має прекрасні перспективи.

Олена Підгрушна стала чемпіонкою світу в спринті, здобула медалі в гонці переслідування і в естафеті та була націлена на здобуття другої золотої медалі на зимовій Олімпіаді для України. "У нас був дуже напружений графік виступів протягом усіх змагань. Мені навіть немає що згадати з Олімпійського містечка", – розповідає вона. "Ми просто намагалися зосередитися". Але залишатися зосередженим було не так просто. Коли Олена та її товариші по команді готувалися до естафети, у якій вони хотіли обов’язково перемогти, у Києві палали шини і десятки демонстрантів гинули на вулицях. "Це не могло нас не турбувати, але ми намагалися зосередитись на біатлоні", – каже Олена. "На останньому колі естафети я думала лише, як відстрілятись, і це додало мені сил. Я думала, що не можу дати втомі подолати мене, коли на Батьківщині гинуть люди. Ні, я не могла цього допустити і я побігла ще швидше". Саме цей момент більш, ніж все інше, визначає сьогодні її олімпійський досвід. "Я відчувала, як вся країна підтримує нас, і в такі моменти, здавалося, я летіла на крилах", – каже вона. "Після гонки ми, нарешті, змогли відпустити свої емоції і дати волю сльозам. Це були неймовірні почуття".

НОВЕ ЗОЛОТО НА ЗГАДКУ На Олімпіаді в Кореї Олена виступатиме в ранзі олімпійської чемпіонки і збирається подарувати українцям ще одну мить олімпійської слави.

Разом зі своїми трьома товаришками по команді вона входить до десятки найкращих у рейтингу Кубку світу, тож у них є всі підстави сподіватись на успіх. "Всі наші дівчата дуже досвідчені й талановиті", пояснює Олена. "І в нас є величезне бажання реалізувати наші мрії". Міжнародна компанія Visa, відмічаючи успіхи Олени Підгрушної, включила її до переліку 40 олімпійських спортсменів, яким надається спонсорська підтримка. Це допомагає. "Завдяки спонсорству", каже Олена, "мої батьки та мій особистий тренер зможуть поїхати зі мною". Але це також накладає відповідальність. "Успіх – це відповідальність як перед нашими вболівальниками, так і перед молодими спортсменами", – говорить спортсменка. "Я хочу бути прикладом для них". Тим часом сподіваймося, що Олена матиме час, щоб поспілкуватись з іншими спортсменами в Олімпійському селі наступного місяця. Принаймні після жіночої естафети... Lviv’s Athletes of the Month: Tetyana Kit & Roman Gladysh Wrestler Tetyana Kit and cyclist Roman Gladysh won the final two Athlete of the Month awards in 2017 from the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine. Tetyana was named the November Athlete of the Month for winning a historic bronze medal in the U58 kg division at the under-23 world wrestling championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. She anchored the Ukrainian side to the team silver medal, falling just short of Japan. Trained at the Lviv School of Physical Education, the star athlete already has a world championship title (2015) and European championship silver medal (2016) in her collection. Keep your eye on Tetyana as she works her way toward the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Roman Gladysh is Lviv’s Athlete of the Month for December after picking up his second World Cup medal – a bronze at the fourth stage in Santiago, Chile. This comes on the heels of a bronze medal in November at the European championships in Germany. Roman has won several national championships and is perhaps considered the greatest cyclist in Ukraine. Another alum of the Lviv School of Physical Education, he has finished as high as sixth at the world championships. Тетяна визнана спортсменкою листопада, здобувши бронзову медаль у ваговій категорії до 58 кг на чемпіонаті світу з вільної боротьби до 23 років у польському місті Бидгощ. Вихованка Львівського училища фізичної культури, спортсменка вже має звання чемпіонки світу (2015 р.) та срібну медаль чемпіонату Європи (2016 р.) у своїй колекції. Тепер Тетяна готується до участі в Олімпіаді-2020 в Токіо. Роман Гладиш став львівським спортсменом грудня, здобувши свою другу медаль Кубка світу – бронзу на четвертому етапі в Сантьяго, Чилі. А перед цим він здобув бронзову медаль в листопаді на чемпіонаті Європи в Німеччині. Роман виграв декілька національних чемпіонатів і може вважатись одним з найкращих велосипедистів України. Він також є випускником Львівського училища фізичної культури, і посідає шосте місце в рейтингу на чемпіонатах світу. Lviv’s Halychyna Sports Palace hosted the national Winter Fairytale 2017 artistic gymnastics tournament from 18–19 December. Nearly every region of Ukraine were among the 300 participants aged five and up, as well as athletes from Poland, Moldova, and Norway. Traditionally timed to mark the beginning of Lviv’s holiday season, the competition takes place right before St. Nicolaus Day – a special holiday for Ukrainian children – and all participants went home with memorable sweets and prizes. Lviv was well represented with several Leopolitans winning their competitions, including Anastasiya Puhach, Khrystyna Pohranychna, Karolina Buchkovska, and Kateryna Pivtorak.

У Львівському палаці спорту "Галичина" 18–19 грудня пройшов національний турнір з художньої гімнастики "Зимова казка-2017". Серед 300 учасників віком від п'яти років були представники майже всіх регіонів України, а також спортсмени з Польщі, Молдови та Норвегії. Традиційно приурочені до початку святкового сезону у Львові, змагання відбуваються безпосередньо перед днем святого Миколая – особливого свята українських дітей – і всі учасники поїхали додому з солодкими подарунками та призами. Серед переможців були декілька львів’ян, зокрема Анастасія Пухач, Христина Погранична, Кароліна Бучковська та Катерина Півторак.

viv’s world rapid and blitz chess champion Anna Muzychuk decided to forego her chance to repeat – and win the substantial payouts that come along with it – to protest that the event will be held in Saudi Arabia, a country notorious for it’s weak women’s rights standards. She says she has no interest in wearing the abaya (the long, loose-fitting dark robe Saudi women are made to wear), in being accompanied when outdoors, or to “altogether not to feel myself a secondary creature”. Saudi Arabia was awarded the event, in part, for the substantial prize packages it is offering. The $2 million in prize money is nearly 350% more than when she won the titles last year in Doha, Qatar. “In five days”, she explains, “I was expected to earn more than I do in a dozen events combined.” Her sister Mariya – herself a former world champion (from Lviv) – boycotted this year’s World Chess Championship in Tehran, Iran, as she did not want to wear the hijab while playing. She will be joining her sister in boycotting this event. “The most upsetting thing is that almost nobody really cares”, Anna says. “For those few who care – we’ll be back!”

емпіонка світу з бліц шахів зі Львова Анна Музичук відмовилась від участі в міжнародному турнірі з призовим фондом 2 мільйони доларів, що відбувся у Саудівській Аравії, країні, відомій утисками громадянських прав жінок. Вона каже, що для неї принизливо носити обов’язковий одяг мусульманок, постійно бути у супроводі чоловіків, пересуваючись містом або "взагалі відчувати себе вторинною істотою". Провести цей турнір в Саудівській Аравії було вирішено, зокрема, через величезний призовий фонд, який більш, ніж втричі перевищує винагороди на подібному турнірі минулого року в м. Доха, Катар. Пропускаючи цей турнір, Анна втрачає два титули чемпіонки світу, але не бажає поступитись принципами. В цьому її підтримує сестра – Марія Музичук – сама колишня чемпіонка світу, яка вже бойкотувала чемпіонат світу з шахів в Тегерані, оскільки вона також не хотіла носити хіджаб (мусульманську жіночу хустку) під час гри. "Найбільше дратує що, здається, нікого, крім нас, це не хвилює. Це дуже сумно, але я все одно не відступлюсь від своїх принципів. Моя сестра Марія тієї ж думки, і я дуже цьому рада", – впевнено говорить Анна. "А для тих, хто небайдужий – ми ще повернемося!"
