ere you watching when Ukraine’s Oleksandr Abramenko became Ukraine’s first male Winter Olympic champion? Did you see Olena Pidhrushna walk into Olympic Stadium proudly waving the Ukrainian flag? Those moments were electric – Olympic champion Pidhrushna leading a group of athletes hoping to follow in her footsteps, or Abramenko discovering that, despite their best efforts, not a single person on the planet was superior to the 29-year-old from Mykolaiv.

Moments like those can inspire a generation of young athletes to pick up sport. Of course, Lviv had many athletes competing in Korea as well, although none so successfully as Oleksandr. And Lviv is well set for the future, as you can see by the impressive crop of athletes regularly featured in this magazine.

LVIV’S WINTER OLYMPIC STARS

Nearly one-third of Ukraine’s athletes in PyeongChang were born or educated in Lviv. Ten athletes competed in five sports, giving young Western Ukrainian athletes plenty of heroes to look up to. Credit goes to the Lviv State University of Physical Education, which trained many of the athletes.

Obolonchyk starred for the city. Shkhumova fared particularly well, finishing 21st – 14 positions ahead of her current World Cup rank. Olha Knysh (Alpine Skiing), Tetiana Petrova (Freestyle Skiing), Annamari Dancha (Snowboarding), and Viktor Pasichnyk (Nordic Combined) also honourably waved the Galician banner while in Asia. In addition, Lviv-born Vladislav Bykanov skated for Israel in short track speed skating.

LVIV’S SUMMER OLYMPIC STARS

Don’t mess with Lviv! Our city’s finest summer Olympic athletes do their best in combat competitions – whether hand-to-hand (karate and wrestling), with a gun (shooting), or with a sword (fencing). Ukraine may not exactly be known as a Winter Olympic powerhouse, but the country has fared far better at the Summer Games. Lviv has seen many of its own Olympic champions, including Yana Shemyakina (Fencing – London 2012) and Oleksandr Petriv (Shooting – Beijing 2008).

The city also sports world champions in sports like wrestling (Yuliya Tkach – 2014), archery (Veronika Marchenko – 2014), and karate (Stanislav Horuna – 2017). Their successes have inspired a new generation of Leopolitan superstars and Lviv has become Ukraine’s go-to city for fencers, shooters, wrestlers, and karatekas.

LVIV’S NEXT GENERATION OF STARS

Take fencing for example. Lviv sports two of Ukraine’s top 2020 medal hopes in the sport in Ksenia Panteleeva and Olena Kryvytska. Ksenia was part of Ukraine’s bronze medal-winning team at the 2015 world championships, while Olena won bronze at last year’s event and is currently ranked No. 4 in the world. Karateka Kateryna Kryva won European championship gold last year and is currently ranked No. 6 in the world, while World Games champion Horuna is ranked No. 2. Hoping to join former world champion Tkach on the mat in 2020 is 23-yearold Tetyana Kit, already a world and European championship medalist. Marchenko, cyclist Roman Gladysh, and rhythmic gymnast Khrystyna Pohranychna have also all seen success at the international level. Yes, 2020 is shaping up to be a very good year for Lviv’s Olympians. Who will pick up the mantle from Shemyakina, Petriv, and Abramenko to become the next in line from Ukraine’s City of Champions?

Lviv will play host to the glamorous Lviv Fashion Week at the D. Halytskyi International Airport and locations throughout the city from 22–25 March. The event will feature some of Ukraine’s most renowned designers, including: Vozianov, Kateryna Karol, Couture de Fleur, Ivanna Yukhymchuk, and J. Perekriostova. LFW will kick-off at the Lvivarnya Cultural Complex on 22 March with the Art Space creative project and presentations by young designers.

Other events will see presentations of collections by DIYA, Zahara, Blunt, and Polish brands Eklectic and K&M. New collections will also feature the best of Kristina Prokopiv, Olena Levynska, and Muzyka&Sas. Special guests to the event include A-LAB Milano and Piccione Piccione, an Italian label that has developed a reputation for its colourful prints. Pieces from this brand are not

intended to change the way women dress, but to enhance what is already there, building on beauty and intrigue by way of cut, colour, fabric, and finish. The brand designs for women who enjoy daring fashion, want to be different, and are not afraid to try something new.

It is impossible to imagine our way of life, housing interior, or public spaces without the beauty of artistically processed glass. Invented long ago, glass has for centuries improved manufacturing technology, artistically enriched its forms, and expanded the process line. In some countries, such as Italy, Sweden, and the Czech Republic, glass manufacturing has become part of the national identity. In fact, one might consider glass art as a ‘window on the world’. Lviv’s lovely Glass Museum will host an exhibition of artistic glassware featuring the best entries for the Andriy Bokotey Award, initiated by China’s Wuxi Greenwave Fine Arts Gallery. Bokotey is a graduate of the ceramics

department at the Lviv State Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts (now the Lviv National Academy of Arts). He chaired the Art Glass Department (1994-96), was a professor and vice-rector (1996-00), and was the Academy’s Rector (200015). The founder and organiser of ten International Blown Glass Symposiums in Lviv, he also founded the city’s wonderful Glass Museum. A National Artist of Ukraine since 2007 and a member of the National Academy of Arts since 2001, his works have been exhibited in galleries all around the world. кераміки Львівського державного інституту декоративно-прикладного мистецтва (нині Львівська національна академія мистецтв). Він очолював відділ художнього скла (1994-1996), був професором і проректором (1996-2000), а також ректором академії (2000-2015). Засновник та організатор десяти Міжнародних симпозіумів гутного скла у Львові, він також заснував Музей скла. Він має звання Народного художника України з 2007 року, а з 2001 року – є членом Національної академії мистецтв; його роботи виставлялись у галереях по всьому світу. Одним словом, А. Easter is an especially festive time of year in Lviv, which has long been a city where the wide range of religious identities present in our population have more of a reason to celebrate.

Lviv has always been a crossroads where the historic empires of the Orthodox and Christian churches have met, but given the diverse ethnic makeup of ancient Lviv, Easter has traditionally been a time of year when different denominations have been conciliatory as they celebrate the miracle of resurrection according to their own beliefs. In Ukraine, Easter is called Velykden (Great Day) and is the Ukrainian Orthodox Church’s most important holiday. Easily, the most famous symbol of Ukraine’s ancient and unique Easter celebrations is the distinctive decorated Easter Egg. With Orthodox Easter taking place on 8 April, Ukrainians around the country will indulge in decorating eggs with their families. From 15 March to 15 April, Leopolitans and guests of the city will want to see these beautifully adorned eggs and learn about the centuries-old art form at one of many workshops. The pysanky-decorating process is relatively simple, although keeping a steady hand can sometimes be a challenge. The highlights of the Easter celebration program will take place on 8–9 April in the city center and in Shevchenkivskyi Hay and will delight visitors with various concerts, contests, and other entertainment. Чернеча Гора, 1) Великдень – це особлива святкова пора у Львові, який є містом, де здавен мирно співіснували представники різних народів та релігій. Львів завжди був перехрестям, де зустрічались історичні імперії різних церков, але, беручи до уваги різноманітний етнічний склад стародавнього Львова, Великдень традиційно був часом, коли різні конфесії примирялись, святкуючи чудо воскресіння згідно з їх власними переконаннями. В Україні Великдень є найважливішим святом української православної й греко-католицької церкви. Найвідомішим символом давнього і неповторного свята Великодня є яскраво оздоблена писанка. Курячі (й не тільки) яйця прикрашають різноманітними кольорами, лініями та візерунками залежно від регіону України. Цього року Великдень в Україні та інших країнах Східної традиції святкують 8 квітня, і, традиційно, українці по всьому світу будуть займатися фарбуванням та оздобленням писанок зі своїми сім'ями. Від 15 березня до 15 квітня мешканці Львова та гості міста зможуть побачити безліч писанок та крашанок і ознайомитись з цією древньою формою мистецтва на одному з багатьох майстеркласів для всіх бажаючих. Процес оздоблення писанки є відносно простим – для цього потрібно мати тверду руку, найпростіші матеріали та інструменти, і трішки фантазії. Основне святкування Великодня відбудеться 8–9 квітня у Шевченківському гаю та в центрі міста, де буде багато виступів музикантів та співаків, конкурсів та інших розважальними програм. Ukraine’s preeminent P. Virsky National Folk Dance Ensemble is bringing their spectacular show to Lviv’s beautiful Opera & Ballet Theatre on 16 April. Virsky’s repertoire includes old and modern dances from different Ukrainian regions, as well as dances from other cultures. They present a choreographic picture of pre-revolutionary and modern life, including the Hopak, the Zaporizhian Cossacks, the Povzunets (Crawler), and Chumak’s Joy. The magnificent artistic group has embraced the beauty of its native Ukraine, the wisdom of its people, and the folk tradition of humour and optimism. Every performance is a romantic, passionate, and

exciting show in which dancers move with swivel-smooth grace into a mosaic of changing patterns. STARS OF ARGENTINIAN TANGO 29 March at 19:00 at the M. Zankovetska National Drama Theatre (1 L. Ukrainky St.)

THE EXTRAVAGANT DAKH DAUGHTERS

Lviv’s lovely M. Zankovetska National Drama Theatre will host the Stars of Argentinian Tango for a concert in the Western Ukrainian capital on 29 March. Fans of the world’s most passionate and romantic dance style will be delighted by the wonderful choreography of Simone Facchini and Gioia Abballe and the beautiful compositions of the famed Tango Spleen Orquesta under the guidance of Argentina’s Mariano Speranza. Introduced to tango at the age of 11, the talented couple of Facchini and Abballe are now considered some of the finest tango dancers in the world. Leopolitans and guests of the city will also enjoy a performance by Emilio Cornejo, considered one of the world’s foremost Malambo dancers. 16 April at 19:00 at the M. Zankovetska National Drama Theatre (1 L. Ukrainka St.) Ukraine’s always intriguing Dakh Daughters are bringing their new show to Lviv’s M. Zankovetska Drama Theatre on 16 April. Named after the theatre from which it evolved, the Dakh Daughters is a music and theatre ensemble founded in Kyiv in 2012. The band consists of seven women that play various instruments and sing in multiple languages and dialects. Their musical style can best be described as a combination of Ukrainian folk music with elements of punk, rap, and rock. Finding inspiration in 20th Century avant-garde theatre and cabaret, critics have compared the group’s poetic style and expressive hyperbole with British cult band The Tiger Lillies. First gaining wider recognition after performing on Kyiv’s Maidan in December 2013, their civic and political engagement has made them one of the leading symbols in Ukraine’s fight for democracy. Thanks to their civic engagement, the Dakh Daughters performances are an urgent call for reconciliation, freedom, and love among people. SPRING BUSINESS FORUM 19–20 April from 9:00 at Arena Lviv (199 Stryiska St.) Lviv’s Spring Business Forum will take place at Arena Lviv on 19–20 April beginning from 9:00. Event participants include representatives of local authorities, leading banks, successful entrepreneurs interested in Ukraine’s economic development, and foreign financial and investment firms interested in implementing business projects in Ukraine.

This year’s main topic is ‘Changing the trajectory of development: new strategies, instruments, and markets’. Some of the key issues the forum will tackle are: defining the state and prospects of short- and medium-term economic development in Ukraine by means of export studies; qualitative analysis of elements affecting the conduct of business in Ukraine; and establishing cooperation between entrepreneurs, foreign investors, and political authorities from across Ukraine.

AGROPORT WEST 19–21 April from 10:00 at Lviv’s D. Halytskyi International Airport Held in three cities, Agroport is one of the biggest agrarian events in Eastern Europe. This international farming development forum focuses on the individual interests of local agricultural producers. Held in terminals, airfield platforms, and other exhibition areas, Lviv’s forum will centre on Western Ukraine, while forums in Kharkiv and Kherson will look at Eastern and Southern Ukraine. Organised by the Lviv Region State Administration and Aviabrand, the event is supported by Ukraine’s Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food.

Lviv’s Agroport West forum will highlight small and medium farmers. Key topics will include animal husbandry, crop production, growing organic products, growing vegetables, horticulture, berries, and fisheries. Famers from Volyn, Rivne, Ternopil, Khmelnytsky, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Zakarpattia will join Lviv’s farmers at Agroport West. Special attention will be paid to the problems of adapting agriculture to climate change, increasing productivity, and transitioning to safe and accurate technologies. In honour of the event’s fifth anniversary, a new project will be launched. The International Council Meeting of Law Students will be held in Lviv from 15-22 April. Organised by the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA), an independent, non-political, non-profit organisation, the event is expected to draw more than 400 participants. The ELSA is a unique network of nearly 40,000 law students from over 350 universities in 43 countries in Europe and Asia. The group organises a variety of academic and professional events, of which the International Council Meeting is one of the largest. Representatives of local organisations receive professional training and important decisions on future ELSA activities are taken. ast year Ukraine released more than 30 films – shorts and features, dramas and documentaries, Ukrainian films and co-productions, wide releases and limited releases. The majority were privately funded without any aid from the government. No one can guarantee that will happen again in 2018, but it is already confirmed that one film – Legend of the Carpathians – will be released at Lviv’s Planeta Kino on 29 March. The film was first presented at last May’s Cannes Film Festival and later at a festival in the Spanish city of Marbella, where it took second place for Best Feature Film. Serhey Skobun’s historical action story is inspired by the legend of Oleksa Dovbush, a Carpathian folk hero with excellent fighting skills and the ability to predict the future.

Oleksa was born in the Hutsul village of Pechenizhyn in the Carpathian Mountains in the early 18th Century and later became leader of a band of 50 members (leheni). Many Prykarpattian folk songs and poems still survive and portray him as a protector of the poor – a Ukrainian Robin Hood. It is believed he is from an area near the Ivano-Frankivsk city of Bolekhiv, and a rock complex nearby that is named after him (the Rocks of Dovbush) was named as one of Ukraine’s seven natural wonders.

Legend of the Carpathians was planned to be a TV series, but it was later decided that a feature film would be a better fit for the story. Shooting began in autumn 2014 and the film hit the festival circuit last year. Valeriy Kharchyshyn, frontman of popular Ukrainian rock group Druha Rika, and Mariya Yaremchuk, Ukraine’s Eurovision entry in 2014, have starring roles in the film. The film tells the story of Marichka (Yaremchuk), who is unable to go against the will of a strict father and is forced to marry a man she doesn’t love. She later flees to Oleksa in the woods where their romantic affair begins.

Legend of the Carpathians will be presented in South Korea, Hong Kong, and many other countries around the globe. Невідомо, як складеться ситуація в українському кінематографі у 2018, але вже відомо, що одна стрічка українських митців – "Легенда Карпат"- демонструватиметься в кінотеатрі "Планета Кіно" з 29 березня. Фільм вперше був представлений на Канському кінофестивалі в травні минулого року, а потім – на фестивалі в іспанському місті Марбелья, де він зайняв друге місце за найкращий художній фільм. Сергій Скобун зняв історично-пригодницький фільм на основі легенди про Олексу Довбуша, карпатського народного героя, відважного воїна та провидця. Олекса народився в гуцульському селі Печеніжин у Карпатах на початку 18 ст., а пізніше став ватажком опришків. В багатьох народних піснях та поемах його зображують як захисника бідних – українського Робін Гуда. Все його життя вкрите легендою – досі збереглись так звані Скелі Довбуша розташовані Івано-Франківській області поблизу Болехова, які названо одним з семи природних чудес України. "Легенда Карпат" була запланована як телесеріал, але пізніше було вирішено, що художній фільм буде відповіднішим для цієї історії. Зйомки розпочались ще восени 2014 року, а в минулому році кінофільм вийшов на фестивальну орбіту. Головні ролі у фільмі зіграли соліст популярного українського рок-гурту "Друга Ріка" Валерій Харчишин і Марія Яремчук. Фільм розповідає історію про Марічку (М. Яремчук), яка не може протистояти волі суворого батька і змушена вийти заміж за чоловіка, якого вона не любить. Потім вона тікає в ліс до Олекси, де починаються їх романтичні пригоди. "Легенда Карпат" буде показана в Південній Кореї, Гонконгу та багатьох інших країнах світу. he Cannes Film Festival held a major animated film market at last year’s event where Ukraine’s Animagrad studio presented its latest feature. The Stolen Princess received much positive feedback and will be launched this month in Ukraine and many other countries worldwide. Animagrad is one of Ukraine’s premiere studios and The Stolen Princess is its first of a set of animated features designed to popularise Ukraine and its stories on the international market.

Oleh Malamuzh’s The Stolen Princess is a 3D animated fantasy film loosely based on Russian poet Alexander Pushkin’s fairy tale ‘Ruslan and Lyudmila’. This wonderful story takes place in the age of valiant knights, beautiful princesses, and battling sorcerers. Ruslan is a wandering artist that dreams of becoming a knight. He meets and falls in love with the beautiful Mila, even though he doesn’t realise that she is the prince’s daughter. Unfortunately, the lovers’ happiness doesn’t last long, as the evil sorcerer Chоrnomor steals Mila right before Ruslan’s eyes and transforms her power of love into his own magic power. Not to worry! Ruslan sets out on a chase after the stolen princess and overcomes all obstacles to prove that real love is more powerful than magic.

The story’s main characters include the capricious and charming Princess Mila, her love – the traveling actor Ruslan, his friend Nestor, a plump and simple-minded hamster, the evil sorcerer Chоrnomor, and Mila’s father, none other than Prince Volodomyr of Kyiv. Many Ukrainian celebrities lent their voices to the project. Mila and Ruslan are voiced by Nadya Dorofeeva and Postiff (Oleksii Zavhorodnii) of Vremya I Steklo, the Wise Cat and Nestor are voiced by TV hosts Yuriy Gorbunov and Serhiy Prytula, and Fahot (Oleh Mykhaylyuta) voices Fin the Sorcerer. Merited Artist of Ukraine Mykola Boklan speaks for King Volodomyr, while iconic voice artist Yevhen Malukha lends his talents to the charismatic villain Chоrnomor. You might recognise his voice from Ukraine’s dubbing of unforgettable Alf, The Simpsons, as he speaks for Homer Simpson, among many other pop culture icons.

The film’s second trailer was officially released in February and shows the world through the eyes of Princess Mila. Keep your eye out for the scene featuring the Ukrainian folk holiday of Ivana Kupala Day! The national release of the cartoon is scheduled for mid-March.

Стрічка "Викрадена принцеса" отримала багато позитивних відгуків і вийде на екрани в березні в Україні та багатьох інших країнах світу. "Анімаград" – одна з нових українських студій, а "Викрадена принцеса" – це перший з низки мультфільмів, які мають популяризувати Україну та її казки й легенди на міжнародному ринку. "Викрадена принцеса" режисера Олега Маламужа – це 3D-анімаційний фантастичний фільм, який переспівує казку російського поета Олександра Пушкіна "Руслан і Людмила". Ця дивовижна історія відбувається в часи доблесних лицарів, прекрасних принцес, і войовничих чаклунів. Руслан – це мандрівний артист, що мріє стати лицарем. Він зустрічає красуню Мілу і закохується в неї, не знаючи, що вона принцеса. На жаль, щастя закоханих не триває довго, бо злий чарівник Чорномор викрадає Мілу просто на очах Руслана і використовує її силу любові для зміцнення своєї власної магічної сили. Та не хвилюйтесь! Руслан вирушає в погоню за викраденою принцесою і долає всі перешкоди, щоб довести, що справжня любов сильніша за будь-яку магію. Основні персонажі цієї історії – це примхлива але чарівна принцеса Міла, вона любить мандрівного актора Руслана з його другом, пухким і простодушним хом'яком Нестором, Чорномор – злий чаклун, а батько Міли, ніхто інший, як київський князь Володимир. Багато українських відомих акторів надали свої голоси героям фільму. Ukrainian Book Wins Bologna Ragazzi Award Romana Romanyshyn and Andriy Lesiv’s duet of books titled ‘Loudly, Softly, In a Whisper – I See That’ won the non-fiction Bologna Ragazzi Award for 2018. One of the most prestigious in the world of children’s publishing, the award recognises excellence in graphic layout, format innovation, and ability to capture a young reader’s attention. Winners will be presented their prizes at an awards ceremony at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in late March.

Published by Lviv’s-own Old Lion Publishing House (Vydavnytstvo Staroho Leva), the books were also awarded the 2017 BIB Plaque Award at the Biennial of Bratislava (BIB), one of the oldest international honours for children’s book illustrators. Цю нагороду присуджують ілюстраторам дитячих книжок за досконалість графічного макету, інноваційність формату та вміння захоплювати увагу юного читача. Наші переможці отримають свої нагороди під час урочистої церемонії на Болонському дитячому книжковому ярмарку наприкінці березня. Опубліковані львівським видавництвом "Старого лева", книжки також отримали нагороду BIB Plaque 2017 на Братиславському бієнале (BIB), одну з найстаріших міжнародних відзнак для ілюстраторів дитячих книжок. LVIV SOCIETY WOMEN’S MARCH FOR EQUAL RIGHTS The feminist movement has always been about equality for all women, but there are many paths to that goal. One of them featured hundreds of feminists wielding colourful posters at the annual Leopolitan Women’s March on International Women’s Day on 8 March. Over 200 participants demanded an end to gender-based violence and discriminatory policies.

International Women’s Day was a popular holiday in the Soviet Union and is still one of the most widely marked celebrations in Ukraine, but activists say that the emphasis on flowers and compliments to women runs counter to the concept of gender equality. Some of the participants suggested getting rid of the IWD holiday as it is controversial and instead replace it by celebrating Mother’s Day. Most of the attendees brought out their own posters and shouted slogans like “Women’s rights are human rights”, “Don’t give flowers, give safety”, and “Honey, take maternity leave”. Protesters said they were marching to highlight domestic violence, mistreatment of women in maternity hospitals, and bullying in the armed forces.

Turn on any TV channel, open any book, or look at any newspaper in the world, and you are likely to see media and culture that is created predominantly by men and centres around men’s stories. It’s the same for sports – women’s sports make up just 7 percent of all sports coverage in the world – and politics, where only 23 percent of the world’s parliamentarians are women. Participants marched through city centre attracting a lot of attention and were even accompanied by police officers to guarantee their safety.

Феміністський рух завжди виступав за рівність для всіх жінок, але є багато шляхів до цієї мети. Один з таких заходів зібрав під своїми прапорами та гаслами сотні феміністок на щорічному жіночому поході на честь Міжнародного жіночого дня 8 березня. Понад 200 учасників вимагали припинення гендерного насильства та дискримінаційної політики. Міжнародний жіночий день був популярним святом у Радянському Союзі і залишається одним із найпопулярніших свят в Україні, але сьогодні активістки кажуть, що дарування квітів та компліменти жінкам суперечить концепції гендерної рівності. Деякі учасниці пропонували ліквідувати це свято, оскільки воно суперечливе, а замість того святкувати лише День Матері. Більшість учасниць йшли з плакатами та вигукували гасла "Права жінок – це права людини", "Не давайте

квітів, дайте безпеку" та "Коханий йди… у декрет". Протестантки заявили, що виступають проти домашнього насильства, поганого поводження з жінками в пологових будинках та залякування у збройних силах. Феміністки кажуть: якщо увімкнути будь-який телевізійний канал, відкрити будь-яку книгу чи будь-яку газету будь-де у світі, можна побачити, що засоби масової інформації та культура створюються переважно чоловіками та обертаються навколо чоловічих тем. Така ж ситуація і зі спортом – статті про жіночі виступи на змаганнях становлять лише 7% усіх спортивних новин, а в політиці лише 23% парламентарів у світі – жінки. Марш пройшов через центр міста, привертаючи до себе увагу перехожих та гостей міста і навіть супроводжувався працівниками міліції, щоб гарантувати безпеку та громадський порядок.

MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS VISITS LVIV Pavlo Klimkin, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, payed a working visit to Lviv on 2 March to meet with Lviv Region leaders, as well as teachers and students at Lviv’s I. Franko National University.

While visiting, he laid flowers at the burial places of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes (who were killed during the Revolution of Dignity in early 2014) and ATO soldiers in the city’s Lychakiv Cemetery. He also paid his respects to soldiers of the Ukrainian Galician Army and Polish military graves.

On 3 March, he traveled to Poland to take part in events commemorating Ukrainians killed by Polish self-defence units in the village of Pawlokoma in March 1945.

І. Франка. Під час відвідування він поклав квіти на могили героїв Небесної Сотні, що загинули під час Революції Гідності 2014 року та полеглих воїнів АТО на Личаківському цвинтарі. Він також відвідав поховання солдатів Української Галицької Армії та польські військові могили. Після цього 3 березня він поїхав до Польщі, щоб взяти участь у заходах, присвячених пам'яті українців, що загинули в бою з польськими підрозділами самооборони в селі Павлокома у березні 1945 року.

LVIV TOUR GUIDE FORUM Lviv’s FESTRepublic Club played host to the Lviv Tour Guide Forum from 27-28 February. The platform for tour guides, operators, and agencies to share ideas and experiences was initiated by the Lviv Tourism Office and featured several panel discussions, including ‘Centre of life outside the centre’, ‘Successful cases of tourist decentralisation’, and ‘Transformation of Sykhiv’s A. Dovzhenko Cultural and Educational Centre’. Other panels looked at regional centres, like ‘Dnipro – a new tourist destination on the map of Ukraine’, and ‘Ternopil – tourist hub in Western Ukraine’.

Special attention was paid to the topics of ‘Tourism and branding of territories in the Age of Technologies: Digital Routes of Ukraine’ and ‘Painful history and negative heritage of the 20th Century: How to talk about the complex and controversial’. The forum attracted many talented speakers, such as journalist and cofounder of ‘Radio Skovoroda’ and ‘The Ukrainians’ Volodymyr Beglov; Head of the Dnipro Development Agency Anna Kolyeda; Founder of the ‘Ukrainer’ project Bohdan Lohvynenko; and Head of the culturology master’s program at Lviv’s I. Franko National University Irina Starovoyt.

В програмі форуму відбулось кілька групових дискусій, зокрема, "Центр життя поза центром", "Успішні випадки туристичної децентралізації" і "Трансформація культурноосвітнього центру ім. О. Довженка". Також відбулись дискусії на теми туристичного розвитку регіональних центрів: "Дніпро – новий туристичний пункт на карті України" і "Тернопіль – туристичний вузол у Західній Україні". Особливу увагу було приділено темі “Туризм та брендинг територій в епоху технологій: Цифрові маршрути України” і «Болісна історія та негативна спадщина ХХ століття: як говорити про складне і суперечливе”. На форумі виступили, зокрема, талановиті оратори, як от журналіст та співзасновник "Радіо Сковорода" та проекту "The Ukrainians" Володимир Бєглов; керівник агенції розвитку Дніпра Анна Коледа; засновник проекту "Українець" Богдан Логвиненко та керівник магістерської програми культурології Львівського національного університету ім. NAPALM DEATH METAL GIG IN LVIV Lviv’s !FESTRepublic Club was the scene for British extreme metal band Napalm Death’s concert on 23 February. Formed back in ’81, the group is credited as pioneers of the grindcore genre by incorporating elements of crust punk and death metal. Theirs is a noise-filled sound that features heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars, grinding bass, high speed tempo, blast beats, and sociopolitical vocals that consist of incomprehensible growls or high-pitched shrieks. Their debut album Scum (1987) was incredibly influential in the global metal community. Napalm Death have released 15 studio albums and are listed by Nielsen SoundScan as the seventh best-selling death metal band of all-time. According to Guinness World Records, their song ‘You Suffer’ is the shortest in the world at just 1.316 seconds long. Leopolitan metal fans got exactly what they expected.

THE ART OF ARTURO SANDOVAL Lviv’s central Opera & Ballet Theatre played host to the concert of Arturo Sandoval, one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, on 26 February. The accomplished artist, classical pianist, and composer has won 10 Grammy Awards (19 nominations), an Emmy, and six Billboard Awards. Sandoval possesses virtuoso technical ability and a speciality of high notes, but is probably more recognised for his ability to lyrically improvise a ballad on the piano. One of the most brilliant, multifaceted, and renowned musicians of our time, his compositions range from standard jazz to Latin jazz and classical. With the Opera & Ballet Theatre filled with hundreds of fans for his solo concert, Sandoval dazzled the crowd with his suave and expressive lyricism. There were, of course, many standing ovations, but none as thunderous or prolonged as that which ended the concert.

About the interviewee: Vitaly Sych is Chief Editor of Novoye Vremya media holding

Vitaly Sych first made his name as the long-serving editor of Ukraine’s top current affairs weekly, but he cemented his reputation by resigning rather than bowing to Yanukovych era censorship. He is now back at the helm of a new journalistic empire that aims to challenge the media monopoly of Ukraine’s oligarch elite “We don’t feel under any pressure from the government,” says Vitaly Sych, the chief editor of Ukraine’s most ambitious and editorially independent media holding. “Sometimes we have a dialogue with the authorities, but that is healthy. We recently published a lead article that was highly critical of Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko. He contacted me personally and we met for a long discussion about his work and his background. I do not see anything wrong in that.

Forty-two year old Sych speaks with authority when it comes to the considerable potential for rough and tumble in the Ukrainian media industry. He first cut his teeth in the late 1990s as a reporter at the English-language Kyiv Post newspaper before rising to national prominence as chief editor of Russian-language weekly Korrespondent magazine. Sych spent over a decade running Korrespondent, gaining a reputation as one of the most influential and innovative media managers in the country. All that changed overnight in summer 2013 when members of President Yanukovych’s inner circle sought to censor him

by purchasing his publication. Faced with the prospect of selling out or walking tall, he resigned.

Since 2014, Sych has headed up the Novoye Vremya (literally “New Time”) holding, a new and rapidly expanding post-Maidan multimedia platform backed

by Ukraine’s leading investment bank, Dragon Capital. Novoye Vremya makes no secret of the fact that it aims to set the standard for professional journalism in the country, while also serving as a flagship for the values that drove Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity.

MAINTAINING THE MAIDAN MOMENTUM Sych has spent the first few months of 2018 somewhat preoccupied with preparations for the launch of a nationwide talk radio station. This new radio station is the latest addition to his growing empire, joining Novoye Vremya’s existing portfolio that consists of a weekly Russian-language current affairs magazine and bilingual news website. This expansion into radio is part of a conscious effort to chip away at the

dominant position enjoyed by the handful of oligarchs who control the lion’s share of Ukraine’s media market.

The Novoye Vremya project is very much a child of Maidan. Conceived during the revolution at a time when Kyiv was in flames, the first edition of the print publication hit the streets in late spring 2014 as Russian hybrid forces were overrunning towns and cities across eastern Ukraine. The debut cover page of the magazine featured a machine-gun toting Vladimir Putin in full combat gear with Ukraine’s fugitive ex-president Viktor Yanukovych in street thug attire crouching by his feet. This baptism of fire set the tone for four years of no holds barred current affairs coverage that has left nobody on Ukraine’s political Parthenon unscathed.

His departure was widely interpreted as evidence of the rapidly deteriorating media climate under President Yanukovych. Sych’s prospects at the time looked bleak, but events would soon overtake the government and throw Ukraine’s political arena into turmoil. Within weeks of Sych’s resignation, Ukraine witnessed the start of the protest movement that would eventually become the Revolution of Dignity.

Although nobody knew it, Yanukovych’s days were numbered. The demise of the Yanukovych regime paved the way for the emergence of the Novoye Vremya project. It also allowed Sych to begin the process of rehiring the Korrespondent staff members who had resigned alongside him.

Looking back at the situation he found himself in during the twilight of the Yanukovych era, Sych now sees the incident as indicative of the corrupted thinking

EBA ROUND TABLE DEMOGRAPHIC SITUATION AND HUMAN CAPITAL IN UKRAINE For the last few years businesses have faced a shortage of skilled labour in the labour market. Recruiters confirm that it is becoming more and more difficult to find the specialists that employers request.

Why does this trend exist in Ukraine? Do Ukrainian professionals really go abroad to find new opportunities? What re the main things that businesses and the state can do to keep professionals in Ukraine? We discussed these issues during the European Business Association Roundtable “The Demographic Situation and Human Capital in Ukraine”. This is what we discovered.

Experts agree that businesses should pay particular attention to the following points:

At the same time, promising scientists prefer to go to Europe or the United States for understandable reasons – Ukraine simply lacks the logistical and technical support for high-quality and modern researchers.

Yes, people are moving. And naturally they go to richer and more successful countries. For example, in Poland we have more than two million Ukrainians. Mostly young people leave the country. At first, they go there to study, but after graduation the majority do not return to the homeland.

According to statistics, the percentage of arrivals in the country are growing. Here the situation is a bit different, but it is also natural. People come mainly for poorer countries in Asia and Africa.

The wage level in Poland compared with the same positions in Ukraine in many specialities is 4-10 times more. An increase in wages will be an effective motivational factor if the level of pay is increased substantially and can be maintained for several years. If the increase is insignificant, and taxes and fees are deducted from that, then a financial stimulus will not solve the problem.

We are experiencing an information revolution and can currently find many excellent professions in the IT industry. However, after 20 years, even these specialities are likely to become antiquated – all types of technical activities will be replaced by work. Safety Without a doubt, the escalation of the conflict in the East is frightening people, because many are rather pessimistic about the possibility of a quick conclusion. Additionally, there is a need to improve the justice system, restore confidence in law enforcement, and create conditions for the protection of citizen’s rights in general. Another important issue is safety in the workplace as, unfortunately, statistics in Ukraine are disappointing.

What should businesses do and what can be expected from the state?

Typically, employers can entice staff by raising wages. In this case, companies can give raises every few years, although they should be substantial. The transition to a “white” salary will help reduce the shadow economy share and give employees confidence and loyalty in the company’s brand. One more valuable incentive can be the provision of medical insurance for workers. It is also worth taking care of working conditions and safety, allowing employees the opportunity to study and develop.

It is important for the state to stimulate business through a variety of steps, such as creating conditions for a noticeable increase in the minimum wage, to free the salary from all deductions, to create conditions for the provision of social packages from businesses, to increase the level of security (effective police and army), and to improve the legal environment and justice in Ukraine.

On February 26, EBA Western Ukrainian Office Regional Coordination Council had a meeting with Oleh Syniutka, the Head of Lviv Regional State Administration and the Heads of Controlling and Law Enforcement Authorities in Lviv region. The main discussion

topic at the meeting was security of business. It has been agreed by the participants to organize a joint meetings for further discussion of protection of businesses, as well as conduct joint preventive measures. Future meetings are scheduled to be held in March.

Taking into account the importance of good marketing knowledge in Ukraine and growing trend of brain approach in business, EBA Western Ukrainian Office together with the University of Sheffield International Faculty organized a special workshop by Nikolaos Dimitriadis, certified NeuroMarketer, CEO of Trizma Neuro, strong advocate of brainbased solutions to business challenges.

Nikolaos Dimitriadis delivered to the participants the following key messages: 1. Currently, marketing research, surveys and focus groups do not work. Because the information received has already been rationalized and customized

to the given question. If you would like to know why your customers chose a specific product, use a brain approach. Our brain contains the true information about the decision. Your brain prepares a decision 7 seconds earlier than you, and you only broadcast its choice.

3. Marketing is a science and art. Neuromarketing is a scientific component of marketing; it is a collection of data on brain reactions, eye movement, cardiac response, micro-mimics and the adoption of managerial decisions based on data. And then it is time for art.

L AW STUDENTS FROM LVIV TO COMPE TE IN WASHINGTON

On 11 February, law students from Lviv won the Ukrainian National Championship of the oldest and most prestigious moot court competition – Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. This marks the first ever victory of the team from Lviv Ivan Franko National University in the Jessup Ukrainian National Championship since 1994 when the competition first took place in Ukraine. Students from 10 Ukrainian law schools competed in Kyiv on 9–11 February. Following two days of preliminary rounds the team from Lviv faced last year’s champion – team from Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University (institute of international relations). Having won the national championship, Lviv law students also won the right to represent Ukraine during international rounds of the Jessup competition, which will take place April 1–8 in Washington, D.C. Commenting on the team’s victory, one of its coaches, Volodymyr Solohub, a ‘Jessuper’ with more than 10 years of competition experience said: ‘The moot court competitions, such as Jessup, are an important education tool. At the same time, those Ukrainian teams that advance to the international rounds, are from the outset in a very disadvantageous position. While teams from other countries are busy preparing for the international rounds, Ukrainian teams, having qualified, start fundraising to finance their trip. Unlike in other countries, where the government or the law school cover team’s expenses, Ukrainian teams are responsible for covering their travel expenses on their own’.

So now, Lviv law students are busy with the fundraising. During their meeting with Lviv city mayor Andriy Sadoviy, the

latter pledged UAH 10 thousand each.

Horodok town council provided UAH 43 thousand to Nataliia Savula – a town native. Law firms Avellum, Kinstellar, Pavlenko and Partners, Simplex as well as Turkish Airlines have also pledged their financial support to the team. Yet, these contributions did not cover the team’s budget completely and the students continue raising funds.

Jessup competition is a simulation of a trial in the International Court of Justice – the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. The 2017–2018 season marks the 59th year of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. Jessup is the world's largest moot court competition, with participants from over 645 law schools in 95 countries. Teams of law students compete against one another through the presentation of oral and written pleadings. While the case itself is moot – the issues raised there are quite real and timely. This year’s case deals with validity of interstate arbitral award, capture of underwater drone, nuclear disarmament and conduct of naval warfare.

Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. Це перемога є першою в історії Львівського університету з 1994 року, коли дані змагання вперше пройшли в Україні. 9–11 лютого у Києві 10 команд з різних українських університетів боролися за звання національного чемпіона. Після двох днів відбіркових раундів команда зі Львова змагалась у фіналі з минулорічними переможцями – Київським національним університетом імені Тараса Шевченка (Інститут Міжнародних Відносин). Здобувши національне чемпіонство, студенти також вибороли право представляти Україну на міжнародному етапі конкурсу, який відбудеться 1–8 квітня у Вашингтоні, США. Один з тренерів команди – Володимир Сологуб, з 10-річним досвідом участі у змаганнях, коментуючи перемогу, зазначив: “Судові дебати, такі як Джессап, це важливий навчальний інструмент. Водночас, ті українські команди, які потрапляють на міжнародні раунди, є в дуже невигідному становищі з самого початку. У той час як учасники з інших країн інтенсивно готуються до міжнародного етапу конкурсу, українські команди-переможці лиш починають збирати кошти на свою поїздку. Адже на відміну від більшості інших країн, де уряд або університет покриває

витрати, українські команди повинні робити це самотужки”. Тому наразі львівські студенти займаються збором коштів. На зустрічі із студентами мер Львова, Андрій Садовий, пообіцяв надати кожному члену команди по 10 тис. грн. матеріальної допомоги. Городоцька міська рада надала 43 тис. грн. Наталії Савулі – жительці міста Городка. Юридичні фірми Avellum, Kinstellar, Simplex, Павленко та Партнери, міжнародна авіакомпанія Turkish Airlines та інші також пообіцяли фінансово допомогти команді. Але ця підтримка не покриває витрати команди повністю, тому студенти продовжують збирати кошти. Навчальні судові дебати імені Філіпа Джессапа – це імітація судового процесу в Міжнародному суді ООН – головному судовому органі ООН. У 2017–2018 роках судові дебати ім. Ф. Джессапа проводяться у 59те. Ці змагання є найбільшими у світі, адже у них беруть участь понад 645 команд зі 100 країн світу. Команди студентів-правників змагаються між собою, представляючи свою позицію у формі письмових меморандумів та усних виступів. Хоча справа стосується спору між двома вигаданими державами, правові питання між ними є цілком реальними і актуальними. Цього року справа стосується чинності міжнародного арбітражного рішення, захоплення морського дрона, незаконного виготовлення ядерної зброї та правил ведення морської війни.

leading regional reinvention ECONOMIC AND LEGISLATIVE CHANGES ARE FORCING LAW FIRMS ACROSS UKRAINE TO RETHINK THEIR PROFESSIONAL FOCUSES The transformations taking place in Ukrainian society since 2014 have also left their mark on the country’s legal industry. The appearance of new state institutions, wholesale changes to legislation, and the emergence of entirely new economic priorities have obliged many Ukrainian law firms to rethink their professional focuses. This trend is evident across the country, with numerous regional nuances reflecting Ukraine’s diversity.

The overall picture in early 2018 is one of guarded optimism throughout Ukraine’s legal industry as law firms throughout the country complete their adaption to the new environment and begin to anticipate a return to growth. The economic shocks of the past four years are clearly subsiding. In their place are expectations of consolidation based on solid if unspectacular GDP growth and positive indicators in sectors as diverse as retail and IT outsourcing.

Lviv Leads the Way Lviv is leading the regional revival of the Ukrainian legal sector. A slowly rising tide of international investment in western Ukrainian is fuelling demand for new services and creating new markets for legal sector professionals. This comes as no surprise to those monitoring the regional breakdown of Ukraine’s investment appeal. Relatively speaking, Lviv has been one of Ukraine’s few post-2014 investment success stories. The city’s close proximity to EU markets, coupled with its strong academic traditions and business-friendly local authorities, have helped to attract a number of international investors and generate considerable demand for suitable legal services at the local level.

Lviv-based law firm Advice Group’s Managing Partner Anton Podilchuk says demand has been

strongest for one-stop-shop legal services ranging from company registration to launch. This mix can include everything from M&A, tax planning, personnel issues, land and real estate agreements, licensing and certification, to support in establishing the terms of cooperation with international financial institutions.

Fellow Lviv specialist lawyer Serhiy Matviyiv, who serves as Managing Partner at Matviyiv & Partners, concurs. He says the increasingly attractive investment climate in the Lviv region is contributing to the development of a new legal services market for international clients based on what he calls “a turnkey basis”. This growing demand for legal services is also helping to fuel the creation of so-called startup law firms in the Lviv region, some of which fall short of the standards international clients might expect LVIV TODAY | March 2018

compared to the simple struggle to hold on to sufficient personnel and keep the business afloat,” says Rostislav Pazyna, Managing Partner at Collegium law firm. He notes local frustrations with the quality of the region’s judges. Pazyna says this has led to fewer cases going to court locally.

Odesa Market Expansion Ukraine’s largest Black Sea port city Odesa has witnessed growing interest in legal services related to all things nautical over the past year. The city has always been a hub for legal practices relating to international trade and the protection of seamen abroad, but there has recently been a marked upturn in demand for legal support in areas connected to sea transport and infrastructure. This is in part due to rising international investment in Ukraine’s river port and seaport infrastructure as the country seeks to develop its international trade capacity. With local maritime expertize already in place, Odesa law firms are ideally positioned to take advantage as international companies and Ukrainian businesses alike look to upgrade the country’s nautical gateways and seafaring traffic.

With more and more international companies seeking to develop presences in Lviv, the city’s legal industry professionals are also finding themselves increasingly called upon to address issues of international compliance. “EU and US regulations encourage businesses to implement compliance policies and to adopt a zero tolerance attitude towards corruption. This leads to rising interest in these kinds of services. There is also a marked increase in demand for investigations to search for possible “white collar” crime within companies. Investigations of this nature have been the flavor of the month recently,” says Podilchuk.

Zakarpattia Battles Brain Drain South of Lviv and across the Carpathian mountains in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region, legal innovation has taken a back seat to more immediate challenges presented by a local workforce that is shrinking due to the recent rise in economic migration to nearby EU countries Slovakia, Poland, Romania and Hungary. “For many companies, legal services have become a secondary issue LVIV TODAY | March 2018

The Odesa legal sector is also attracting additional market participants. Jurline law firm Managing Partner Volodymyr Zubar says one of the most prominent trends in the Odesa region legal sector over the past twelve months has been the appearance of new law firms. “This growing number of small and medium-sized law firms appearing in the city will inevitably affect the balance of power within the Odesa legal services market over the coming two to three years,” he says. Zubar believes this will add to the evolution of the market, a process that has already seen Odesa law firm clientele increasingly inclined to use the services of several law firms in parallel while also maintaining their own in-house legal teams.

Dnipro: Gateway to the Breadbasket As Ukraine’s agricultural sector goes from strength to strength and attracts growing levels of international interest, law firms in Dnipro are finding themselves faced with rising demand for agribusiness-related services. Although primarily seen as Ukraine’s industrial capital, Dnipro is also the largest city and biggest river port terminal in the heartlands of Ukraine’s famed breadbasket, making it a logical focus for many of the new companies entering the Ukrainian market and seeking agribusiness legal services. Evgeniy Smirnov, the Managing Partner of Smirnov, Tarasevich & Partners law firm, says services relating to agribusiness acquisitions were among the most popular in Dnipro throughout 2017. "Foreign investors tend to acquire Ukrainian agricultural enterprises that come complete with considerable volumes of long-term land lease agreements for agricultural purposes," he comments. Smirnov says that in line with recent market trends, many of the international companies investing in Ukraine’s agricultural sector tend to seek out regional law firms located closer to their assets. This has providing the Dnipro legal sector with additional business that might have previously gone to Kyiv-based law firms.

Another agriculture-related area of Dnipro region legal practice experiencing growing demand over the past year is protection against socalled raider attacks and illegal land grabs. “Despite the frequent statements made by various state agencies underlining their commitment to preventing raider attacks on agrarian enterprises, the protection of businesses throughout the agriculture sector remained just as relevant in 2017,” says Smirnov. “Over the past year, new raider schemes have emerged focusing on entire enterprises and also land banks under longterm lease.” This aspect of the legal services industry remains in high demand throughout Ukraine, where complaints over lax law enforcement remain all too common.

Kharkiv Wealth Management In eastern Ukraine’s largest city, one of the most striking trends of the past 12 months has been the growth in demand for wealth management services from law firms. Maksym Sheverdin, the Managing Partner at Sheverdin & Partners law firm, says that while requests of this nature are nothing new for the Kyiv legal sector, they are now becoming more commonplace in regional centers like Kharkiv as wealthy members of the local business community seek more secure and transparent ways to manage their assets. “Wealth management requirements tend to involve a complex cocktail of legal consulting services covering all aspects of the financial life of private clients with large personal fortunes. This can include advice on investments, taxation, long-term planning, and things like corporate rights management,” explains Sheverdin. “It is not yet time to talk about the emergence of an entirely new legal practice as wealth management tends to involve a synthesis of various different legal specializations. Nevertheless, it is becoming a more popular service in all of Ukraine’s regional capitals. This is true of Kharkiv in particular.”

pring is a time for regeneration and renewal, when we throw off the shackles of winter and walk confidently into the new day. It’s also the perfect time to get your body back on track and feeling fabulously balanced. The truth is, during winter, it’s easy to get out of whack. With lots of heavy foods, shorter days, not enough sunlight and the feeling of being strangled underneath all those winter woolies, it’s no surprise we come into spring feeling less than our best. But there is a solution, some simple things you can do to get back on top of the game.

Why just spring clean your house when you can spring clean your body?

As Spring blossoms, it presents yet another opportunity to hit the refresh button, come out of winter hibernation and begin anew. We’ve collected a variety of spring tips and tricks to get us healthy, refreshed, and fashionable, re-energizing your home, body, and self!

Tune Up Your

Body & Mind TH IS S P R I N G S E ASO N 1. Take A Moment To Yourself This is more mind than body, but the body is connected to the mind, so we’re going with it. After winter, it can be hard to change pace into spring and summer. The sunny seasons are, by nature, more active and faster-paced seasons, so it’s easy to feel like you’re getting left behind. Don’t stress! Instead take some time to sit and get yourself mentally prepared for the activities of spring and summer. This might be just five quiet minutes watching the sun rise in the morning, or drinking your coffee without interruptions (if possible).

Or it might be a structured 15-minute mediation window before bed, or before everyone wakes up.

2. Enjoy The Great Outdoors Nature has a profoundly healing effect on us, and we aren’t just talking in a ‘tree hugger’ kind of way. Being out in nature, and enjoying the great outdoors, is widely thought to be a mood booster. Also, getting out in the sun is a great way to boost your Vitamin D and feel better about yourself.

So before you let everything overwhelm you, take a walk outside and just live in the gorgeous moment.

3. Hydrate Spring cleaning is all about throwing out the old and embracing the new. The same goes for your body, especially when it comes to toxins. Toxins can collect in the body, and they make you feel terrible. But it doesn’t have to be that way. By staying hydrated and having a solid habit of drinking between 2 – 3 litres of water everyday, you can flush those bad boys out.

Think of it as an all-over clean up for your body, refreshing and very worthwhile.

4. Eat A Rainbow Winter can be a time of eating heavy, stodgy foods, often with a boring palette of vegetables. But spring is a new season and new habit should follow! Change up your eating routine to include lots of fresh, vibrant fruits and vegetables. It’s even better if you can get local produce that’s in season. This is fresher, hasn’t been in storage, and usually contains much less worrying extras. Remember that the food you eat is fuel for your body, and you only want to put the best fuel in to ensure you run on track.

5. Dump Your Excess You might think this means getting rid of excess winter weight, and certainly part of spring cleaning your

body is shaving off that additional warming layer you might have added. But we’re also talking about getting rid of the excess in your life, particularly to do with your body. Get rid of the extra jewellery you never wear, the makeup that’s definitely too old, and the clothes that just don’t look good on you. Start fresh, and feel fresh in your mind with a new minimalistic approach. It’s worth it.

6. Sweat Out The Bad As we already know, hydrating your body is a great way to flush out the bad toxins that might be making you feel less than your best. But so is sweating.

Getting a sweat on every single day of the week is just as effective at getting your body back into balance. Not only do you get rid of the yukky, you also improve your state of mind, and your health. Whether you’re losing weight, toning, or just enjoying the great outdoors, the benefits are clear. Plus, a good sweat makes your skin look lovely!

7. Wake up with an energizing morning scrub.

Coffee lover? Start your day by mixing a few tablespoons of coffee grounds and sugar with a little bit of shea butter. Take this mixture to the bath or shower and gently rub on your skin, the aroma will instantly wake you up and energize you for the day. The coffee combo with sugar removes stubborn dead skin that can accumulate on your body during the winter months and the shea moisturizes your body for a healthy glow.

8. Refresh your fragrances and go subtle.

Looking for a signature scent change? Spring is a lovely time to wear more green and floral notes.

Look for fresh citrus and flower blends to lift your spirits with the rising temperatures. Go subtle and look for single and dual note fragrances. Naturally, heavy, complex, cloying fragrances are out. The ability to wear pure and simple fragrances displays your confidence.

9. Go through your email inbox Delete any spam, emails that you no longer need or items that you have already responded to. Unsubscribe from any mailings that you are not reading or using on your computer, phone or tablet. On a mental and spiritual level consider that you are cleaning out old files that block your productivity and that are taking up useless space in your energy field.

Lviv’s Athlete of the Month: Stanislav Horuna Lviv’s killer karateka Stanislav Gorun was named Lviv’s Athlete of the Month for February after taking bronze in the World Karate Federation’s top-level Karate-1 Premier League in Dubai, UAE. This comes on the heels of his gold medal performance at the second-tier Series A event in Guadalajara, Mexico in November. A graduate of Lviv’s Army Sport School and regional high school for sports skill, Gorun is one of the top fighters in the world. He is currently ranked No. 2 in the kumite u75kg division and already has a European championship silver medal under his (black) belt. Sport Dance: Lviv – Leader Competition Lviv’s Halychyna Sport Complex hosted the Lviv – Leader Sport Dance championships last month. Organized by the Leader modern dance studio, the competition is now an official World Dance Sport Federation event. Over 500 dancers from Belarus, Moldova, Poland, Estonia, Romania, Lithuania and of course, Ukraine competed in Latin and Standard programs in several age categories. Now in its 21st year, the spectacular show and popular celebration of dance attracts many fans to Lviv – Leader every time.

Спортивні танці: "Львів Лідер-2018" У приміщенні спортивного комплексу Галичина 18 лютого пройшов чемпіонат зі спортивного танцю. Конкурс, організований клубом спортивного та сучасного танцю "Лідер", зараз є офіційною подією Всесвітньої Федерації танцювального спорту. Понад 500 танцюристів з країн Центральної та Східної Європи змагалися у латиноамериканській та стандартній програмах в кількох вікових категоріях. Традиційні змагання під патронатом Всеукраїнської Федерації танцювального спорту проводяться у Львові вже понад 20 років.

Львівський каратека Станіслав Горуна визнаний спортсменом місяця лютого за перемогу на дебютному етапі міжнародного турніру "Karate 1 – Series A" в іспанському місті Гвадалахара, а також у змаганнях Premier Leaguе Karate у Дубаї, ОАЕ. Випускник Львівської спортивної школи армії та обласної школи спортивної майстерності, Горуна – один з найкращих бійців у світі. Сьогодні він займає друге місце в розряді куміте в категорії 75 кг і вже здобув срібну медаль чемпіонату Європи маючи чорний пояс. Карате вперше буде представлене на літніх Олімпійських іграх 2020 року в Токіо, і наш спортсмен докладе всіх зусиль, щоб стати першим в історії українським чемпіоном карате. Так тримати, Станіславе!

Archery: World Indoor Championships A team of 12 Ukrainian athletes took part in the World Indoor Archery Championships in Yankton, USA from 14-19 February.

Seven archers on the team hail from Lviv and each one of them won a medal! Veronika Marchenko, Solomiya Trapeznikova, Georgy Ivanitsky, Oleksandr Pantsyr, and the women’s junior team of Orysia Didych, Zhanna Naumova, and Catherine Mazorchuk all came home with bronze medals. Chernivtsi region’s Ivan Kozhokar returns as a champion. Congratulations to all the winners!

Cycling: Ukraine’s Winter Championship Lviv’s SKA bike track played host to some of the nation’s top cyclists at last month’s Ukrainian Winter Cycling Championships. The event featured more than 250 cyclists competing in individual and team races. Several Leopolitans had strong showings at the event, including Lviv’s December Athlete of the Month Roman Gladysh, who beat Taras Shevchuk and Nazar Pokoyovyi in the men’s team pursuit, and Tetyana Klimchenko, who raced by Anna Nagirna and Oksana Klyachyna in the women’s team pursuit. Maybe the most exciting event was the track time trial, where cyclists compete individually against the clock over a certain distance from a standing start. Alla Biletska and Bohdan Danilchuk won gold in the 500m races, while Viktoriya Bodnar and Egor Korobov took home the 1000m crowns. Congratulations to the winners!

Велоспорт: Стрільба з лука: Чемпіонат світу зі стрільби з лука у приміщенні В американському місті Янктон 14-19 лютого відбувся Чемпіонат світу зі стрільби з лука в приміщенні, в якому взяли участь 12 українських спортсменів. З них семеро – зі Львова, і кожен здобув медаль! Вероніка Марченко, Соломія Трапезникова, Георгій Іваницький, Олександр Панцир, та учасниці команди юніорів Орися Дідич, Жанна Наумова та Катерина Мазорчук – усі здобули бронзові медалі. Іван Кожокар з Чернівецької області повернувся додому зі званням чемпіона. Вітаємо всіх переможців!

Зимовий чемпіонат України На львівському велотреку "СКА" пройшли змагання зимового велосипедного чемпіонату України в якому виступили понад 250 спортсменів у командних та індивідуальних перегонах. У турнірі відзначились і львівські велосипедисти, зокрема, спортсмен грудня Роман Гладиш, який випередив Тараса Шевчука й Назара Покойового в чоловічих перегонах переслідування, а також Тетяна Клімченко, яка прийшла на фініш попереду Анни Нагірної та Оксани Клячиної у жіночих перегонах переслідування. Мабуть, найцікавішими були змагання на час, коли велосипедисти стартують індивідуально через певні проміжки часу. Алла Білецька та Богдан Данильчук здобули золото в перегонах на дистанції 500 м, а Вікторія Боднар та Єгор Коробов – на дистанції 1000 м. Вітаємо переможців!

Oleksandr Abramenko BECOMES FIRST UKRAINIAN MAN TO BECOME WINTER OLYMPIC CHAMPION Ukraine’s Oleksandr Abramenko made Olympic history last month by becoming Ukraine’s first-ever male Winter Olympic champion when he topped the podium in Aerials at the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. It was fourth-time’s-a-charm for the 2015-16 World Cup champion, with his previous best performance coming four years ago when

he finished sixth in Sochi, Russia. It took our champ some time to get warmed up, as he finished ninth in the first qualification run and had to qualify for the finals with a solid run on his second chance. He comfortably qualified for the final six after finishing third and fourth on his next two runs, setting the stage for his epic final jump. He nailed a Back

Full-Full-Double Full that earned him 128.51 points, enough to edge out Chinese favourite Jia Zongyang by 0.46 points. Before Abramenko’s Olympic glory, the only Ukrainian man to ever win an Olympic medal was Ruslan Goncharov in the 2006 ice dance alongside Elena Grushina. Abramenko won Ukraine’s only medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

травма коліна надовго виводить його з ладу. Першу перемогу на етапі Кубка світу з фрістайлу після травми Олександр здобув лише 1 грудня 2017 року. На Олімпіаді в Кореї після неуспіху наших біатлоністів всі надії були покладені саме на нього і він їх з честю виправдав. Потрійне сальто з чотирма піруетами у майже ідеальному виконанні принесло йому 128,51 бала, що лише на 0,46 бала

краще, ніж у найближчого (і дуже серйозного) суперника китайця Цзя Цзуньяна. За роки Незалежності українські фристайлісти неодноразово вигравали етапи кубку Європи та світу, входили до десятки найкращих на зимових Олімпійських іграх і лише Олександру Абраменку поки вдалось виграти єдину золоту медаль для України на зимових Олімпійських іграх 2018 року.
