Beginning this summer, Leopolitans will have a number of new low-cost air options for those looking to explore their own country or head abroad. New Ukrainian low-cost / charter airline SkyUP is set to go wheels up this month, while Ireland’s behemoth Ryanair finally looks ready to take off in late summer. The introduction of Europe’s biggest airline to an air market that is already booming is set to bring far more tourists – and of a different mould – to Western Ukraine’s most important centre. less route options than the initial launch plans last year, Lviv can expect to see visitors from places such as London, Munich, and Krakow looking for a budget weekend getaway gem. Hungary’s Wizz Air resumed service last year to great acclaim and already brings visitors from places like London, Berlin, and Wroclaw, while Turkey’s Pegasus Airlines and Ukraine’s UIA, bring tourist dollars from cities like Istanbul, Rome, and Madrid. Last year marked the first time that the Lviv International Airport reached the one million passenger marker. That’s nearly double the passengers in 2015, and nearly quadruple 2012’s prerenovation passenger load. This is despite the interference of Kyiv’s Boryspil Airport’s management team in their successful bid to delay the launch of Ryanair in the Ukrainian market. The demand for air routes in Ukraine meant that Ryanair wouldn’t stay away for long, and despite offering

UIA has held a monopoly on Ukraine’s domestic air market since the demise of Aerosvit in early 2013, and it shows. A flight between Lviv and Kyiv is at least three to four times the cost of an Intercity train ticket, making domestic air travel the domain of the country’s business and political elite. There is some hope that the launch of SkyUP will shake up the market and force UIA to look at its pricing, but with just one route from Lviv beginning this summer (to Odesa), it seems Ukrainians will have to wait. Still, with Ryanair on record stating that they eventual hope to compete in the domestic market, it’s only a matter of time before more average Ukrainian tourists start to arrive through the city’s booming airport.

The rapid growth of Lviv International Airport has a direct impact on the tourism bottom line of Western Ukraine’s most populous centre. The airport nearly doubled its passenger load last year, while at the same time the city reported a 50 percent increase in tourism. New routes from new destinations will continue to fuel these numbers, allowing a new class of people to discover the charm of one of Europe’s last undiscovered gems. Their tourism dollars will, in turn, enable more and more Leopolitans to explore other parts of Europe, allowing for a true exchange of culture and ideas. IN LVIV LVIV CITY DAY 5–6 May in the City Centre As the thriving heart of Western Ukraine, Lviv comes alive each May with a diverse and exciting range of events and activities to ignite national pride and unity and to encourage a sense of community. The events draw hundreds of thousands of locals and visitors to the Western Ukrainian capital to celebrate as a collective what it means to be a Leopolitan. If you’ve been putting off a trip to Lviv, the beginning of May is the time to take it as the city will celebrate City Day with an extravaganza of over 50 events, including concerts, tours, sporting activities, and workshops. There will be plenty to see and do, from eating delicious Galician food to listening to hip concerts to buying traditional products to dancing the Spring away! The city expects that at least half of all Leopolitans, and many more guests of the city, will participate in the celebration that truly offers something for everyone – except, of course, peace and quiet. With City Day occurring on the first Saturday in May, the festive events will take place from 5-6 May. Preparations have already begun to make this year the best event yet. With great entertainment traditions, impressive street parades, magical theatre performances, and entertainments to fit any taste, be sure to be in Lviv for City Day!

FLUGERY LVOVA JAZZ & FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL 5–6 May in the inner yard of Lviv City Council (Rynok Square) One of Lviv’s trademark events, the Flugery Lvova Jazz & Folk Music Festival provides a stage for both eminent jazz groups and those just starting out. Every year since 2003, the event has grown with new initiatives and more prominent groups. This year’s festival will feature performances by more than a dozen international groups from in a variety of musical genres, including jazz, blues, rock, indie, reggae, electronic, and experimental. The festival’s resident bands – Shokolad and DagaDana – will work together to bring out the new joint show, while the Lindblad & Friends band will delight with the best examples of old-school jazz and rock. The “Lviv School of Jazz” will introduce new projects and musicians that are set to become the torchbearers for city’s deep-rooted jazz heritage. One of the festival’s highlights is sure to be Poland’s Projectu Arboretum’s premiere of the Mazurs and Podilia programme, featuring musical heritage from these two regions. The traditional Awakening concert is set for the morning of 6 May with a performance by Ukraine’s preeminent a capella group Pikkardijska Tercia. The ensemble’s light and sophisticated arrangements of traditional folk songs and internationally-renowned pop hits have earned them the claim as one of Ukraine’s most popular post-Soviet groups. Lviv’s beautiful Opera & Ballet Theatre will play host to the amazing Great Gatsby Ballet Show on 23 April. Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s popular novel and Baz Luhrman’s Oscar-winning 2013 film, the show brings to life the riotous and pleasure-seeking world of 1920s America. Featuring dancers from renowned international ballet companies, the characters embody the jaded society of the filthy rich, living in a frenzy

of jazz and opportunity, but whose world is superficial and empty of real emotion. This breathtaking show was adapted into a stunning modern ballet in Kyiv in 2014 by choreographer Dwight Rhoden and world-famous dancer Denis Matvienko. The Great Gatsby is the result of the remarkable and unlikely collaboration between Ukrainian, American, and Russian artists at a time of war and ordeal for Ukraine.

The main concept of the show is to go beyond the confines of existing genres to create a new trend unconstrained by rules or boundaries. The Great Gatsby team consists of those who have already reached the pinnacle of their fields and are striving to go further by creating something entirely new. Lviv’s popular Razomfest Literary & Music Festival returns for a fifth event on 12-13 May. Razomfest is a forum for artists, scholars, writers, musicians, and anyone interested in the fusion of music and literature. Ludkevich Philharmonic Concert Hall will host a concert by Kyiv-based cover band the B&B Project (Bandura & Bayan) on 22 April. The group is famous for their covers of classical and modern songs using Ukrainian folk instruments like the bandura, which is similar to a lute but with 31 to 68 strings, and the bayan, which is a buttoned accordion. KVITKA – FAMILIAR, AND YET STILL UNKNOWN 28–30 April at 17:00 and 19:30 at Lviv’s M. Zankovetska Drama Theatre (1 L. Ukrainka St.) A special concerts dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the birth of the incredible Kvitka Cisyk will take place at Lviv’s charming M. Zankovetska Drama Theatre on 28–30 April. Born in the USA to a family of Ukrainian emigrants, Cisyk studied at the New York Conservatory, where she mastered vocal technique and perfected her voice – a very rare coloratura soprano timbre. She was also known for her ability to sing in the peculiar way known as ‘white voice’. She achieved widespread fame in the USA under her stage name of Cassie (KC) and was known for singing TV and radio jingles for companies such as Coca-Cola, American Airlines, McDonald’s, and Ford, and backup for artists like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Her vocals appeared on American radio stations more than 22 billion times! She was even nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1990. Never forgetting her roots, she recorded two albums of Ukrainian songs – Kvitka, Songs of Ukraine and Kvitka, Two Colours. She was planning to give a series of concerts in her home country before succumbing to breast cancer in March 1998. This special celebration concert will feature Lviv’s-own talented Oksana Mukha alongside the Rock Orchestra Symphony performing some of Cisyk’s most popular hits. Заньковецької 28–30 квітня відбудуться спеціальні концерти, присвячені 65-річчю з дня народження відомої української співачки Квітки Цісик. Вона прийшла на світ в сім'ї українських емігрантів у США, навчалась у нью-йоркській консерваторії, де освоїла вокальну техніку і розвинула й вдосконалила свій унікальний голос – колоратурне сопрано. Khmelnytsky Culture & Recreation Park (4 Bolharska St.) Lviv’s renewed Unist Stadium will play host to the Rugby Europe Conference game between Ukraine and Hungary. The Europe Conference is the thirdtier rugby union competition behind the Championship and Trophy leagues. LVIV CENTURY BIKE RACE 5 May from 8:00 at Rynok Square The Lviv Century is a major cycling event organised by local clubs both as a social event for cyclists and as a fundraiser for their other activities. On 5 May, cyclists will set out on a 100 km race from city centre. The race will be completed within 10 hours and will feature a number of rest stops along the way, where riders will find food, water, and toilets. On a supported century ride, the route will be patrolled by a sag wagon to assist riders with bike maintenance or transportation back to the starting line for those unable to finish. CITY OF PROFESSIONS 19 May from 12:00 at Ivan Franko Park (between Lystopadovoho Chynu & Krushelnytskoi Streets) Lviv’s picturesque Ivan Franko Park will morph into a City of Professions on 19 May, a place where children can try their hands at over 60 different professions. The mini-city will offer children city passports and their first ’fun’ money to experience some role-playing fun while their parents relax in the park. It’s certainly a game-changer for children’s entertainment, but it’s also as informative as it is fun. Instead of tranquilising kids with video games, or suckering them in with themepark rollercoasters, the City of Professions will create workplaces such as theatres, plane cockpits, shops, sausagemaking factories, radio stations, and banks. INTERNATIONAL DOG SHOWS 12–13 May from 10:00 at Pivdenny-EXPO Exhibition Centre (36 Schyretska St.) Lviv will be the place to take in two international dog shows on 1213 May – the Lemberg Cup and the Olga Nizova Memorial. ещодавно відомий у Львові й далеко за його межами арт-салон “Велес”, що на Фредра, 4А відсвяткував своє 5-ти річчя. Lviv Today зустрівся з власницею галереї Галиною Тринцолин, щоб дізнатись про творчі здобутки більше.

Які проекти вдалося реалізувати за цей період? За цей час було організовано понад 70 виставок львівських (українських) художників. Окрім персональних виставок ми організовували різноманітні проекти: “Nude”, “Flora”, “Кабінет”, “Казки Андерсена: ляльки та акварелі” та ін., були учасниками міжнародного проекту “Мистецтво в інтер’єрі”. Провели у вересні 2017 року велику виставку (було презентовано 12 художників, 60 робіт) львівських митців в Пекіні, в музеї ім. Тараса Шевченка. Саме “Велес” був одним з виставкових майданчиків Міжнародного симпозіуму гутного скла, що проходив у Львові. Окрім цього, формуємо приватні колекції замовників, видаємо каталоги, надаємо арт-консультації.

Як відбувається пошук авторів? Хто “ваш” художник? Головний напрямок салону “Велес” – сучасне мистецтво. Галерея презентує творчість відомих українських митців, які творять в різних стилях і жанрах (живопис, графіка, скульптура, декоративно-прикладне мистецтво). Ми працюємо як з відомими митцями сьогодення, так і з молодими перспективними авторами, при цьому ми постійно перебуваємо в пошуку нових імен та відкриті до співпраці.

Які плани салону “Велес” на цей рік? Окрім локальних проектів, ми активно працюємо над виходом на міжнародний ринок. Адже у нас надзвичайно талановиті майстри, й мені б дуже хотілось, щоб про Україну, зокрема про наших львівських художників, дізнався увесь світ. Ми маємо ким і чим пишатись!

viv’s popular Veles Gallery (4A Fredra St.) recently celebrated their fifth anniversary. Lviv Today was on hand to mark the occasion and sat down with gallery owner Halyna Tryntsolyn to speak about the gallery’s creative achievements.

What projects have you brought forward during your time? We have organised over 70 exhibitions of Leopolitan and Ukrainian artists. In addition to personal exhibitions, we have initiated a number of creative projects, including ‘Nude’, ‘Flora’, ‘Cabinet’, and ‘Andersen’s Fairy Tales: Dolls and Watercolours’. We also took part in the international ‘Art in the Interior’ project. Last year we organised a big exhibition featuring 60 works by 12 artists at the Taras Shevchenko Museum in Beijing, China. Veles was one of the hosts of the International Stained Glass Symposium, which took place here in Lviv. We also print art catalogues, organise private collections, and provide art consultations.

How do you choose artists for the exhibitions? Who is “your” artist? We focus mainly on contemporary art. Veles presents the artistic legacy of famous Ukrainian artists that work in quite different styles and genres – painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative and applied arts. We also present works by talented, young artists alongside the works of more established artists. We are always in search of new names and always open for fruitful collaboration and new talents.

What are Veles’ plans for this year? In addition to local projects, we are actively looking to enter the international market. We have many very talented artists and I would very much like Ukrainian artists – and Leopolitan artists in particular – to become recognised worldwide. ritish novelist Alex Shaw is one of the few English-language authors to achieve international recognition for stories set in contemporary Ukraine. The former Kyiv expat has scored a string of successes with novels revolving around the escapades of Aidan Snow, a fictional former British Special Forces soldier with an affinity for all things Ukrainian. Shaw was first inspired to write while living and working in 1990s Kyiv. Despite leaving Ukraine some years ago, he has maintained his links with the country, using Ukrainian backdrops to great effect in his literary endeavours and visiting the country at every opportunity together with his Ukrainian wife. “I grew up in England,” he says, “but in my heart I feel Ukrainian.” Shaw is a member of the ITW (The International Thriller Writers organisation) which boasts Lee Child as its President, and the CWA (Crime Writers Association). His Aidan Snow novels, partly set in Ukraine, have become international Kindle bestsellers and been nominated for the ITW’s “best original ebook” award. Shaw spoke to Business Ukraine magazine about his new book deal and discussed the challenges of writing Ukrainian spy stories at a time when the hybrid war facts on the ground are often stranger than fiction. You have recently changed publishers. What will that mean for the Aidan Snow series?

My previous English language publisher, Endeavour Press, recently went into voluntary liquidation. Both former managing partners subsequently offered me publishing contracts with their new companies. However, I knew it was time to see what other opportunities were open to me, so I contacted six different publishers and two agents. Within a matter of days, I was extremely surprised to receive two confirmed offers and happily accepted a deal from HQ Digital, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. They will republish all three initial Aidan Snow books (Cold Blood, Cold Black and Cold East) in September. Where did you first take your inspiration for the Aidan Snow character?

I am not going to fib. When I first started writing Aidan Snow, he was me. We were both British expats living in Kyiv, we both even lived in the same flat and worked at the same place. However, unlike Aidan Snow, I was not in the SAS (“Special Air Service”, a Special Forces unit of the British Army). Aidan initially appeared in 1996 when I started trying to write my first book. As this was a hobby and I did not know if I could do it, the novel took twelve years to complete. Thankfully, the rest of my books have been a little quicker to write. Like me, Aidan loves Ukraine and feels an affinity for its people. He is outraged by external Russian aggression and internal corruption. In giving him these opinions I have tried to make him seem less like a cardboard cut-out action hero and more like a real, living person. LVIV TODAY | April 2018

How do you research the Ukrainian elements of your novels?

Much of my research has come from first-hand experience of my time in Ukraine and from speaking to family and friends who live in the country. I also tend to write “on location” meaning that I will sit in the place where a scene takes place and write it. This may sound like cheating but it does, I feel, add more authenticity. Of course, I also make extensive use of online resources and tools like Google Earth/Streetview. How important it is for you to provide an accurate portrayal of security and espionage issues in today's Ukraine and to what extent are you comfortable employing poetic license to fit your storylines?

Security and espionage issues have changed dramatically since I started to write about Ukraine. I have attempted to keep up to date by speaking to local contacts and friends within the international security community and inside Ukraine itself. I think it is extremely important that my depiction of the SBU and other security organs is realistic but at the same time, that it is not sugar coated. Sometimes authors can also make the mistake of including too much detail into their work. This slows the narrative and can bore the reader. I am very much aware of this potential pitfall. I have used poetic licence not so much with the storylines but with my central SBU character, Director Gennady Dudka. In my books, he is in charge of the SBU’s Anti-Corruption & Organised Crime Directorate, a branch that no longer exists under that name as far as I am aware. He has held this position for twenty years – something I know is not realistic as each new head of the SBU appoints new directorate chiefs. Despite all that, Dudka is an exceptionally fun character to write. He anchors each of the novels and is a fan favourite, which is why I have kept both him and his position unchanged. He has also appeared in his own short stories. Since 2014, Ukraine has served as a laboratory for Russia's entire hybrid war arsenal, including everything from "little green men" and social media troll offensives to cyber-attacks and fake news. Is this phenomenon something you are seeking to reflect in your novels?

My thrillers Cold East and Cold Shadow both sought to address Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine and the whole issue of the “little green men”. The opening scene of Cold East has Aidan escaping from DNR forces who are equipped with Russian military hardware. This will be something that I shall also look to reflect in future works. What kind of impact has Ukraine's position at the epicentre of Russia’s hybrid warfare activities had on perceptions of the country within the world of international thriller writers – is Ukraine now

playing a larger role in plotlines and becoming a more common backdrop to stories? When I first started to write about Ukraine no one else was doing so. Since 2014, I have noticed more thrillers have started to mention Ukraine in passing. I hope that some of these books may serve to inform their readers a little about Russia’s actions within Ukraine. I am not at all anti-Russian, but I am anti-Russian aggression and anti the architects of this aggression. I hope that one day the Russian people will say enough is enough. I would much rather have readers wanting to read about Ukraine for positive reasons. Facts are often stranger than fiction. Which reallife events during the past four years of hybrid warfare do you think publishers would have rejected as being too far-fetched to be believable?

I think the idea of Russia illegally annexing Crimea from Ukraine would have sounded highly improbable as recently as five years ago, especially as Russia had vowed to protect Ukraine after she gave up her nuclear weapons stockpile (as per the 1994 Budapest Memorandum – Ed.). The fact that the world stood by and watched this happen is even more far-fetched. Nevertheless, it did happen and the world has rewarded the Russians by giving them the 2018 World Cup. Outside perceptions of Ukraine are often distorted both by historical and contemporary disinformation. Is this something you ever find yourself having to address when setting the scene for Ukraine-based elements of your books?

Readers have traditionally viewed Ukraine and Russia as part of the same family, almost interchangeable in fact. If they are family, it is Ukraine which is the older brother and not Russia. Prior to 2014, I think it was safe to say that many in eastern Ukraine did feel closer to Russia, but did they actually want to be Russian or leave Ukraine? In my opinion, they did not. This is the one biggest pieces of disinformation that I have had to counter. Will Aidan Snow be returning to Ukraine in your coming books?

Aidan Snow will always, one way or another, return to Ukraine. I am currently writing a new series and have just penned a scene that takes place in central Kyiv. When you began writing the Aidan Snow novels, Ukraine was still very much off the international radar. The country is now regarded as one of the world's geopolitical and military hotspots. Does this make it easier to generate audience interest in stories with Ukrainian plotlines?

Readers now seem to know where Ukraine is and what has happened to the country. In fact, my books have recently sold very well in Germany because of this growing awareness. Although having said that, one review did state that ‘Cold East’ was an advertisement for the Ukrainian Tourist Board. Now that did make me laugh!

FRENCH AMBASSADOR L AUNCHES FRENCH SPRING IN LVIV Lviv’s History Museum was the site for the official launch of French Spring 2018, an event designed to popularize French culture, from art and cinema to music and the culinary arts. Organised by the Institute Francais d’Ukraine, Alliance Francaise (AF), and the Embassy of France in nine Ukrainian cities including Lviv, the event was officially opened by French Ambassador Isabelle Dumont. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi and Lviv Oblast Head Oleh Sinyutka joined representatives of Lviv’s AF and other admirers of French culture in attendance. At the event, the French Ambassador awarded four Leopolitans with special awards. Former President of Lviv’s AF Natalya Demchuk was awarded with the Ordre des Palmes Academiques (Order of Academic Palms), while the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) was given to current AF President Vasyl Kmet, Dzyga Art Association Director Markiyan Ivaschyshyn, and Lviv History Museum Director Roman Chmelyk.

LVIV’S FIRST E THNOFASHIONDAY On April 15th the square in front of the Lviv’s Opera and Ballet theatre played host for the EthnoFashionDay, a fashion show featuring Ukrainian ethno outfits. The event attracted a lot of attention from Leopolitans and guests of the city as many recognized Ukrainian fashion designers presented their latest collections showcasing authentic embroidery alongside modern interpretations of this traditional clothing. The event was held for the first time and due to a lot of attention it has all chances to become annual. As event’s highlight came fashion defile by models dressed as Ukrainian rag dolls, who marched barefoot along straw filled catwalk accompanied by TroyeZilliа band’s ethno music.

Ukraine’s fashion capital hosted Lviv Fashion Week from 22–25 March – four days filled with buzz, gossip, shows, and of course, clothes! The glamorous event was mainly hosted at Lviv’s D. Halytskyi International Airport and featured the autumn and winter collections from some of Ukraine’s most renowned designers – Vozianov, Kateryna Karol, Couture de Fleur, Ivanna Yukhymchuk, and J. Perekriostova. Leopolitan fashionistas and guests of the city also took in a number of educational roundtables and enjoyed the main showroom, where they had the chance to purchase stylish clothes, bags, shoes, and other fashion accessories from over 30 popular Ukrainian and foreign brands. LFW was opened at the Lvivarnya Museum and Cultural Complex with a presentations of collections by young designers Kristina Prokopiv, Olena Levynska, Muzyka&Sas Ateliers, The Lace, and Twins Design. As one of Ukraine’s chicest fashion weeks, LFW brought muted colours, elegant patterns, and loose, flowing pieces. Each day was a reflection of the city, especially with the special appearance of Piccione Piccione – an Italian label that has developed a reputation for its colourful prints. After graduating from the European Design Institute in Rome, the Sicilian-born Salvatore Piccione won Vogue Italia’s prestigious “Who is on Next?” talent contest in 2014. At LFW, he presented a collection where he paid tribute to femininity and seduction with playful colours and masterful decoration. The four days of high fashion came to a close with Vozianov’s spectacular ARCHI show. Inspired by the works of Ukrainian artist and sculptor Oleksandr Arkhipenko, the show featured outfits with avant-garde cuts and exciting wearability tips.

GRAND HOTEL LVIV’S STAR-STUDDED LAUNCH PARTY The official launch party for Lviv’s elite Grand Hotel had a bit of a Hollywood feel after American socialite Paris Hilton – the great-granddaughter of eponymous hotelier Conrad Hilton – was in attendance. The celebrity heiress and reality TV star arrived in Ukraine together with her fiancée actor Chris Zylka for the opening of a hotel where she also performed a DJ set. The history of the Grand Hotel dates back to the middle of the 19th Century, when Lviv’s first casino opened in a two-storey, Empire-style building in the city centre (13 Svobody Ave.). The building was later rebuilt in 1893 to acquire its present-day appearance. With periods of Polish and Soviet rule behind it, the hotel underwent serious renovations and several changes of ownership since Ukraine’s independence in 1991. The official reopening was designed to celebrate the fouryear, $30 million USD renovation, turning the site into a gem in the centre of the Western Ukrainian capital. The five-star venue offers 121 comfortable rooms in Standard, Advanced, and Luxury layouts. For VIP guests like Hilton, the Grand Hotel even offers a posh Presidential Suite, where the interior’s unique

design, spaciousness, and exquisite furniture immerse guests in an atmosphere of luxury. More adventurous guests might want to check into the Sado Mazo-themed room, which is dedicated to famed Leopolitan Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, who was born in the same building back in 1836. His works were translated into many European languages, have become very popular in places like France and Germany, and the term ‘Masochism’ was even termed in his honour. Guests are spoiled for choice when it comes to dining, as in addition to top-notch room service, the hotel offers the Grand SoLie restaurant, a 24-hour lounge bar, VIP lounge, roof terrace, and cigar room. More active guests will want to stop by the venue’s spacious gym, with over 107 square metres of modern workout equipment. Changing the company's vectors, the government's focus and effective cooperation with German-Ukrainian Chamber of Industry and Commerce allowed to return financial stability and provided the basis for further investment in Klingspor company in Ukraine. 2. What motivates you in your daily life?

On March 29, EBA members visited Klingspor located in Velyki Mosty, Lviv region as part of EBA networking and “Success in Action” project. Klingspor is a leading manufacturer of abrasives with German investments and more than 200 employees. During the meeting Klingspor management team shared company’s lifestyle and aspects of production process. All the participants had a tour inside the facilities and found out about some particularities of manufacturing processes of diamond cutting blades. Yuriy Reznyk, CEO of Klingspor Ltd.: 1. What challenges you faced with when you started your work as a director of Klingspor? I started working at Klingspor company in 2015. This was the year of economic slowdown, high inflation, a decline in production, as well as annexation of Crimea and the war on the territory of the Donbass. One of the main problem that I faced with was the suspension of falling sales trend in Ukraine and its withdrawal to the positive dynamics as well as integrated sales distribution system forming. However, the most important challenge for me was the return of the Board's confidence in the stability of the company development in Ukraine. At that time, the state had a significant debt to Klingspor on the return of income

From the perspective of doing business – Ukraine, on the one hand, is a country with high risks (because of economic instability, corruption, unstable political situation, etc.), and on the other – a fertile ground for opportunities. So, to achieve ambitious goals in commercial and financial terms, to create new jobs, and as a result to improve the conditions of life and comfort of workers – this is actually what I come for to work every day. 3. Please share several top management life hacks. It is necessary to be close to the customer and constantly look for new opportunities of improvement. SECURITY MATTERS: MEETING WITH OLEKSANDR TKACHUK On March 21, members of the Association initiated the meeting with Oleksandr Tkachuk, Head of Lviv Regional Department of the Security Services of Ukraine, and his colleagues. The meeting started with the following statement made by Oleksandr Tkachuk “In case you have any questions to inappropriate actions by employees of the Security Service, please contact me directly. Here is my phone number…”. During the meeting Head of the Security Services of Ukraine in Lviv region also said “We need to understand that situation in the East of Ukraine, concerns about emigres, weapon in hands of an average citizen, corruption in various levels of state authorities affect economic condition of Ukraine and Lviv region in particular”. Among other things, our invited guests also emphasized the fact that with the purpose of protection of Ukraine, Security Service monitors all the counteragents that in one way or another conduct business with the Russian Federation. Oleksandr Tkachuk assured all the attendees of the meeting that any representative of security bodies, Head of Department, or Deputy Head are the objects of anticorruption activity of Security Services of Ukraine.

Concerning the database and personal data protection, Roman Trukhin, representative of the UnderDefense Company, confirmed the fact that Ukraine is a testing area for different kinds of viruses and hacking attacks. In addition, Roman underlined that data protection is a responsibility of managers and company owners. Hence, business representatives are now aware of main tasks of the Security Services of Ukraine at the moment, possibility of reforming authorities involved in anticorruption sphere, business security issues, and possibility of cooperation to create a cybersecurity hub on the territory of Lviv region. It was the first ever meeting between the Association members and Security Services of Ukraine in Lviv region. On behalf of the Association members, we would like to thank Oleksandr Tkachuk and his colleagues for active participation and work they carry out to protect us and our activities.

EBA RESEARCH EBA SMALL BUSINESS SPIRIT INDE X 2018 Despite the unfavorable business climate, small business in Ukraine is actively developing and is optimistic about 2018. These are the findings highlighted by the Small Business Spirit Index conducted for the first time by the European Business Association in partnership with LIGA:ZAKON within the “UNLIMIT Ukraine” EBA project. The overall Small Business Spirit Index* showed 3.2 out of 5 which corresponds to neutral level. At the same time, such components of the Index as assessment of business climate and current state of business, dynamics of its development for the past 6 months, forecast of the situation for the next 6 months revealed dramatically opposite attitudes among entrepreneurs. The research showed strong optimism in business expectations about 2018: 76.2% of respondents expect improvement of business state within the next six months, and 87% predict an increase of income in 2018. Entrepreneurs are significantly optimistic about their business development plans this year. In particular: 54.2% plan to increase number of employees, 57.3% plan to raise the level of wages of hired workers, and 64.3% intend to increase the amount of financing of their own business in 2018. The research suggests that small businesses are becoming more export-oriented. 27% of the polled companies have already entered the foreign markets, and 30.3% are planning to enter this year. Companies are focused on developing their businesses and reinvesting their earnings in their own business. The difficulty in obtaining credits holds back the development of small businesses. According to the research 82% of companies need credit. At the same time, 65% of respondents have difficulties, of which 15.5% of gaining credit is impossible.

We have made sure that such insights are needed for small and microbusiness to stay afloat and lay a solid foundation for development. The next stage of the project development is the Small Business Sentiment Index in Ukraine. This study showed the issues faced by small entrepreneurs every day: inaccessibility of loans (65%), inflation (56.3%), tax burden (42.24%), high level of corruption (41.9%), lack of qualified specialists (39,3%) are the main factors of the negative assessment of the business climate. Knowing about the painful points of business, we can affect the situation, so that small entrepreneurs would feel more confident, and open and develop business in Ukraine was easy and safe.

Moreover, the NBU has raised the discount rate, which will increase the cost of funds. But still there is a reason to be optimistic. The president introduced the bill “On the Currency” instead of the outdated Decree “On the System of Currency Regulation” of 1993, which provides for a certain liberalization of foreign exchange operations that may remove certain administrative restrictions to attract real foreign investments. There are also some changes in the development of the tax system – the introduction of full and timely refunds of VAT; expected replacement of the tax on profit tax on the withdrawn capital; as well as, in case of adoption of the bill on the National Bureau of Financial Security, liquidation of the tax police. There are a number of macroeconomic factors for the recovery of the economy – the growth of demand for Ukrainian products abroad, the stabilization of the exchange rate and, consequently, the increase in the purchasing power of Ukrainian residents.” *The Small Business Spirit Index 2018 was conducted for the first time by the European Business Association in association with LIGA:Zakon within the “UNLIMIT Ukraine” EBA project. The purpose of the research is to cooperate with small and microbusiness, and analyze growth area that will stimulate its development. Within the framework of the survey, 278 owners and directors of small businesses in various spheres of activity were interviewed. About 40% of the companies surveyed were established in the period crisis in 2015-2017.

How do you estimate the economic situation in Ukraine?

In general, 68.2% of surveyed believe that the economic situation in Ukraine does not contribute to the development of small businesses. Only 3% of respondents are fully satisfied with the business climate

EBA RESEARCH BAROME TER OF HAPPINESS IN UKR AINE Why young talents leave Ukraine to find better opportunities abroad? Why approximately 5 million Ukrainian citizens work abroad? How can we retain and encourage talents to stay in Ukraine? Factors like shortage of skilled and professional employees in both corporate and industrial sectors, migration, labour market instability are reflecting modern reality in Ukraine. We decided to find out reasons behind such problems and seek possible solutions. Our new research project “HAPPINESS BAROMETER” is focused on business and everyday practical activities without political slogans. We asked 683 respondents (internet audience) about their vision of life in Ukraine. Results of calculations index rate showed 2.47 points of possible 5 (Likert scale). Key figures: • The vast majority of respondents are more or less satisfied with their current jobs and work-life balance – 56% of respondents • 34% of respondents agreed that the level of their income is sufficient and 44% think that it is not quite sufficient • 48% of respondents think that our health care system is poor and 26% consider it as strongly unsatisfactory • Education in Ukraine: 41% think that it is poor and 35% pointed that it is satisfactory • Safety and security: poor – 46%, strongly unsatisfactory – 34% • Rule of law and human rights: poor – 43%, strongly unsatisfactory – 24% Possible solutions: • Government: Create conditions for significant increase in the minimum wage, separate wage amount from other payments, create conditions for the provision of social packages by businesses, increase security level (effective police and army), improve the legal environment and justice in Ukraine, continue the health care reform, and draw attention to the ecological situation in the state, etc. • Business: Employers should motivate personnel by increasing salary level, and significantly reassessing salaries at least once in several year. Switching to a “white” salary will help reduce the shadow market share and add confidence and loyalty to the company’s brand on the part of its employees. Another valuable stimulus may be the provision of medical insurance and other social guarantees for employees. In addition, it is worth taking care of the safety of working conditions and ability of employees to develop and non-formal learning. LVIV TODAY | April 2018

Chess: Lviv’s GM Anna Muzychuk wins European Blitz Chess Championship Lviv’s chess phenom GM Anna Muzychuk was once again named the European ACP women’s blitz chess champion after besting 78 of the world’s top chess players from 16 countries at the championships in Tbilisi, Georgia last month. Muzychuk won 10 points out of 13 games to claim the lion’s share of the 6,000 EUR prize. The reigning world rapid and blitz chess champion also claimed bronze in the rapid chess tournament held the same weekend, and a share of the 14,500 EUR prize for that achievement. Last year Muzychuk claimed the European rapid chess title, while finishing runner-up at the FIDE women’s world chess championships. Her sister Mariya won that title in 2016.

А. Музичук набрала 10 балів у 13 поєдинках і здобула левову частку призового фонду турніру, що склав 6000 євро. Маючи звання чемпіонки світу зі швидких та бліц-шахів, вона також здобула бронзу в турнірі швидких шахів, що проводився в ті ж дні, і частку призового фонду 14 500 євро. Минулого року львівська шахістка стала чемпіонкою Європи зі швидких шахів, а також займала другі місця на чемпіонатах світу з шахів ФІДЕ. Її сестра Марія здобула цей титул у 2016 році.

Sports dance: Lviv Rising Stars 2018 Lviv’s Gratsya Sports Complex hosted the Lviv Rising Stars sports dance competition on 14 April. Organized by the Foxtrot Dance Club and Lviv’s City Council’s sports and youth department, the event drew over 700 athletes from across Ukraine who performed 10 dance programs for the judges in the Standard and Latin categories. Kharkiv’s Vladyslav Tsykhanovskyi and Anastasiya Kucher went home as the top dancers and will represent Ukraine at the upcoming European championships in Moldova in late April.

Karate: International Lviv Cup Lviv’s SKA bike track hosted the International Lviv Cup karate tournament from 24–25 March. Organized by the Samurai Karate Club, the tournament drew over 1000 children, juniors, cadets, and adults from 12 countries. With 39 gold, 35 silver, and 63 bronze medals, Ukraine finished first at the competition, ahead of Slovakia and Belarus.

Kamyanets-Podilsky: E N J OY A H O T A IR B A L L O O N RIDE OV E R O NE O F U K R A INE ’S M O S T M AGI C A L CI T IE S Kamyanets-Podilsky, located just 275 km from Lviv, is known as Ukraine’s ‘Pearl-on-the-Stone’ thanks to its postcard-worthy architectural masterpieces on the banks of the Smotrych River canyon. A national monument since 1928, the river forms a natural moat, ensuring that the fortress wouldn’t look out of place on a Game of Thrones set.
