UK’s Jamie Cullum, American Grammy-winner Marcus Miller, and Swedish cellist Lars Danielsson. The city’s venues star as well. Whether it’s charming ambiance of Rynok Square, the stately wonder of Potocki Palace, or the relaxing groove of the E. Rosner main stage in B. MONTH LEOPOLIS JAZZ FEST '18 27 June – 1 July at Rynok Square Stage, Potocki Palace Yard (15 Kopernyka St.) and main stage at B. Khmelnytskyi Park of Culture & Leisure (4 Bolgarska St.) Debuting in 2011, the Leopolis Jazz Fest has become the city’s premiere event, a natural fit for the architectural and cultural capital of Ukraine. The Guardian named Leopolis Jazz Fest one of Europe’s top 10 jazz festivals in 2016, putting the event on par with world-famous festivals like France’s Jazz a Vienne, England’s A Love Supreme, and Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival. Still gaining in popularity, this year’s event will attract hundreds of thousands of guests to the Western Ukrainian capital to enjoy the high-quality music of over 200 musicians from 15 different countries. As always, the festival will be held on three stages – the free stages at Rynok Square and Potocki Palace Yard, and picnic area at B. Khmelnytsky Park of Culture.
This year’s headliners include: • Jamie Cullum, one of the UK’s most successful jazz artists with over 10 million albums sold and a Grammy, three BRITs, and the Ronnie Scotts Jazz Award; • Ahmad Jamal, American jazz pianist that is one of the most popular composers in the world; • Marcus Miller, two-time Grammy-winning American jazz multi-instruentalist, composer, and producer; • Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin feat. Melvin Lee Davis and Wes Ritenour, all renowned musicians and multiple winners of many prestigious awards; • Lars Danielsson, Swedish double bass player, cellist, and composer, who will perform with Lviv’s-own INSO-Lviv Symphony Orchestra. Devoted fans are already looking forward to the Eddie Rosner Awards ceremony. Established to honour musicians who have made a significant contribution to the development of jazz music, the winner is selected by an international panel of experts. Past winners include: Chucho Valdes (2017), Pat Metheny (2016), Herbie Hancock (2015), Charles Lloyd (2014), Charlie Haden (2013), and John McLaughlin (2012). Jazz video screenings of rare jazz films have become a tradition at Leopolis Jazz Fest as each year Leonid Goldstein, one of the luminaries of Ukrainian jazz, prepares new material from his extensive collection of jazz videos, which are accompanied by interesting stories about the musicians. Since B. Khmelnytsky Park has some of the city’s finest outdoor acoustics, as well as giant video screens throughout the park, these films will be shown throughout the free area of the park. The ticket-only main stage area will be open
from 19:00 until the last note and guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the comfortable parterre in front of the stage or the park’s iconic picnic areas. Throughout the festival, Ukrainian musicians will have the opportunity to participate in many workshops, jam sessions, and autograph sessions with famed musicians and composers. Festivalgoers can also enjoy the Jazz Fest’s Street Music project, which features bands and musicians of all kinds performing on street platforms throughout the city centre. ATMASFERA SET TO DELIGHT LVIV 23 June at 15.00 on Rynok Square Atmasfera, one of Ukraine’s most popular indie yoga bands, are set to delight Leopolitan music lovers and guests of the city with an intimate concert in the heart of the city on Rynok Square on 23 June. The group’s name is a portmanteau of ‘Atma’, a classical Sanskrit word meaning ‘a person’, and ‘sfera’, which refers to the internal feelings and experiences that surround a person. Their unique music, both soothing and energising at the same time, can be described as a blend of authentic melodies from all over the world accompanied by a modern orchestral sound. In fact, their motto is ‘World music – world peace’. Due to their deeply personal approach to their work, each of their performances is a different and special experience. The band uses more than 16 musical instruments at every concert, ensuring an exclusive sound that is difficult to confuse with any other group. GROVE FEST 14–15 July from 12:00 in Velyky Mosty (45 km from Lviv) Leopolitans and guests of the city are invited to come to Grove Fest on the 14–15 July weekend to share in good music, dance, and performance art. Attendees will be able to enjoy some of Ukraine’s most popular modern bands, including O. Torvald, DC Train, Patronychy, Detach, and Melancholy Drive. AQUARIUM TO FLOOD LVIV WITH ROCK’S GREATEST HITS 26 June at 19:00 at Malevich Night Club & Concert Arena (2 Chornovola Ave.) Lviv’s Malevich Night Club will host Boris Grebenshikov – one of the founding fathers of Russian rock music – on 26 June. Hardly a music lover in former USSR hasn’t heard Grebenshikov and his legendary underground rock group Aquarium. During the 70s and 80s, Aquarium created an entirely unique musical and social aesthetic. Influenced by a variety of music styles and cultures, the group’s sound nevertheless remained recognisable – whether performing quiet love ballads, light dancing reggae, or powerful rock anthems. Grebenshikov is no stranger outside Russia; his albums were recorded and released throughout Europe and North America and he’s widely respected in Western music circles. Volumes can be written about the influence Aquarium had on the Russian musical scene, but a concert speaks better than a thousand words. FÊTE DE LA MUSIQUE 2018 21 June at venues and open-air stages around the city The Fête de la Musique, also known as the worldwide celebration of music, is an annual music festival taking place in cities around the world on 21 June. Created by French Minister of Culture Jack Lang in 1982, the festival has become an international phenomenon, celebrated on the same day in more than 740 sites in 116 cities worldwide, including Lviv. Each year, professional and amateur musicians and groups partner with musical institutions like philharmonic halls, opera houses, musical theatres, schools, and cafés, to organise free open concerts. Fête de la Musique is fundamentally different from other cultural and musical events in that its image is created jointly be everyone participating in the event who is looking to promote music. Even the slogan ‘Faites de la musique’ (Make music) – a homophone of Fête de la Musique – was created to promote this goal. Чорновола, 2) У Львівському нічному клубі "Малевич" 26 червня виступить Борис Гребенщиков, один з батьків-засновників російської рок-музики. Навряд чи хоч один любитель музики в колишньому СРСР не чув Гребенщикова та його легендарну рок-групу "Акваріум". У 70-80 роки "Акваріум" створив цілком унікальну музичну та соціальну естетику. Під впливом різноманітних музичних стилів та культур звучання групи все-таки залишалося впізнаваним – будь то тихі любовні балади, легкі танцювальні реггі або потужні рок-гімни. Гребенщикова знають за межами Росії; його альбоми були записані та випущені в Європі та Північній Америці, і його поважають у західних музичних колах. Багато можна сказати й написати про вплив "Акваріума" на російську музичну сцену, але один концерт скаже краще, ніж тисяча слів. LvivMozArt is a festival of classical music and opera dedicated to the musical heritage of Mozart’s youngest son, Franz Xaver, who lived and worked in Lviv for 30 years (1808–38) and actively promoted music in the city. Beginning just last year, this newest addition to Lviv’s busy festival scene celebrates Leopolitans pride in the place the younger Mozart played in the city’s musical heritage. This year’s festival will delight music lovers with a rich programme of famous orchestras and musicians, including the INSO-Lviv Symphony Orchestra, Lviv’s M. Lysenko National Music Academy’s Baroque Chapel Orchestra, Iranian-American violist Muriel Razavi, German violinist Tobias Feldmann, and Bulgarian Vivi Vassileva, one of the most distinguished soloists-percussionists in the world. You won’t want to miss Ukrainian opera singers Zoryana Kushpler, Vienna State Opera’s soloist since
2007; Iryna Zhytynska, Wroclaw Opera’s soloist; or Sofia Soloviy, who has performed operas in Vienna, Athens, Venice, Rome, and Luxembourg for nearly 20 years. There is plenty more in store than the concerts, with a series of workshops, exhibitions, and children’s activities planned as well. LvivMozArt events are scheduled to take place at some of the city’s most iconic locations – Potocki Palace, Dominican Church, St. George Cathedral, Saints Peter & Paul Garrison Church, Philharmonic Society Theatre, and Lviv’s wonderful Opera & Ballet Theatre. In addition, the Tram Depot, J. Pinzel Museum, and Svirzh Palace will host some events. Some concerts are free of charge, while others require tickets. EXHIBITION OF QING DYNASTY TREASURES 15 May – 30 September at Potocky Palace (15 Kopernyka St.) This summer Leopolitans and guests of the city will have the wonderful opportunity to learn more about the Qing dynasty – the last empire to rule China – at the ‘Treasures of the Qing Dynasty’ exhibition at Potocky Palace. After overthrowing the Ming dynasty, the Qing reigned between 1644 and 1912 and was only the second major empire ruled by an ethnic group other than the dominant Han Chinese. Spanning over 300 years, the Qing dynasty was one of the largest in history and is known for its flourishing art scene and innovations in printing production and weaponry. The Potocki Palace exhibition will focus on Puyi, the last Emperor of China and the 12th and final ruler of the Qing dynasty. As a child, he reigned as the Xuantong Emperor in China and the Khevt Yos Khaan in Mongolia until the Xinhai Revolution forced his abdication in 1912. The exhibition will feature jades and bronzes, silver and ivory religious art objects, porcelain and lacquer ware, precious dragon ceremonial daggers, palace furnishings, and much more. Династія Цін, поваливши династію Мін, панувала від 1644 до 1912 року і була лише другою великою імперією в історії Китаю, якою керувала етнічна група інша, ніж основна – хань. Династія Цін за майже 300 років була однією з найбільших в історії і славилась розвитком мистецтва, науки, технологій, зокрема, в галузі друкарства та озброєння. Виставка в палаці Потоцьких буде присвячена останньому імператору Китаю Пу Ї, дванадцятому і останньому правителю династії Цін. В дитинстві він носив титул імператора Сюань Тун в Китаї та Хевт Йос Хаан в Монголії, поки Сіньхайська революція не змусила його зректися трону в 1912 році. На виставці будуть представлені вироби з нефриту й бронзи, предмети мистецтва зі срібла та слонової кістки, порцеляна та лаковий посуд, дорогоцінні церемоніальні кинджали, оздоблення палацу та багато іншого. LVIV OPEN CUP ARM WRESTLING TOURNAMENT 24 June at 17:00 at Malevich Night Club & Concert Arena (2 Chornovola Ave.) Lviv’s Malevich Night Club is looking to find the region’s best arm wrestler when they host the Lviv Open Cup 2018 international arm wrestling tournament on 24 June. Popularised in this part of the world thanks to the 1987 Sylvester Stallone movie ‘Over the Top’, the sport remains very popular in Ukraine. Competitors will be divided based on age, weight, gender, and whether they are right- or left-handed. Those under 21 are welcome to compete but will require signed parental permission. The intense one-to-one matchups will take place on a small table. Competitors perform standing, with hands grasped together, under the supervision and direction of referees. AS A CHOICE In movies, symphony conductors are portrayed as unsmiling, intense men in coattails that lead a stuffy – but beautiful – musical performance by unsmiling, intense musicians. Mr. Kendlinger may have intensity, but he’s anything but unsmiling or stuffy. Tyrolean native Matthias Georg Kendlinger is conductor and composer as well as founder of own K&K Philharmoniker orchestra. Created in Lviv in 2002, today, this symphony orchestra is one of Europe’s top orchestras, as annually K&K Philharmoniker performes over 100 concerts on Europe’s top stages, while touring schedule is planned two years in advance. Traditionally Matthias Georg Kendlinger brings his orchestra to Lviv several times a year as a special musical present for all Lviv music lovers, and last year he even initiated own “Matthias Kendlinger Musik-Festival” in the city. Lviv Today met up with Mr. Kendlinger to learn more about second edition of the musical festival which became great success from the start and is eagerly awaited by Leopolitans and guests of the city. Last year in Lviv you have launched new music festival and this year you’ll return to delight Leopolitan music lovers with second edition of this festival. Did you initially expect this festival to become such a hit with Ukrainian audience? This is what I had hoped for. I am overwhelmed by the result. What was the main conclusion that you made after last year’s festival? I came to the conclusion that the audience loves my music, which allows me to continue my journey.

Why Lviv was selected to become festival’s headquarters? Lviv has always been our headquarters, Lviv is home of our artists and Lviv has become my second home. What should expect music lovers from festival’s second edition? What in your opinion is a must attend event? We will be presenting 4 world premiers at this years festival. As an absolute “must-attend” I would strongly recommend Symphony No. 3, “Human Rights” at the opening concert. Another highlight worth attending is the closing concert, which will be conducted by my son Maximilian Kendlinger. Maximilian grew up with this music and has been part of it from the start. Does it feel easier to promote your own music?

There are many descriptions of the ideal state of mind for being creative. What is it like for you? What supports this ideal state of mind and what are distractions? Are there strategies to enter into this state more easily? My ideal state of mind when it comes to creativity and composing is during the night and half asleep. Being in contact with nature and catching some sleep during the day once in a while, enhances the ideal state of mind. Distractions whilst composing are interruptions from outside. … the occasional glass of wine can also do no harm. It is remarkable, in a way, that we have arrived in the 21st century with the basic concept of classical music still intact. Do you have a vision of music, an idea of what music could be beyond its current form? I believe that the basic concept of classical music will never die and that it will continue to develop. I do not believe in the concept of atonal music. What useful ideas for the development of cultural and artistic life Ukraine could borrow from Austria? I am convinced that the Austrians can learn as much from the Ukrainians, as the Ukrainians can from the Austrians. Perhaps classical music has been upheld and cultivated a bit more in Austria than in the Ukraine, but then again there are more young people in the Ukraine who have chosen musical education in comparison to Austria. Generally classical music should have more exposure and presence in the media, in order to enable everyone to have access to this wonderful form of art.
Could you tell us a bit more about specialties of your upcoming musical projects of year 2018? In my opinion our special features are performances that convince and enthuse. What is your creative/musical vision for yourself in 10 years? It is my aim to be one of the very best composers of the 21st century.
LVIV INTERVIEW Часом у кіно зображають диригентів, як незграбних, рухливих чоловіків у фраках, які вимахують диригентською паличкою перед сумними й невеселими музикантами. Але цей вигаданий образ не має нічого спільного зі справжнім диригентом оркестру K&K Philharmoniker Маттіасом Георгом Кендлінгером. Уродженець Тіролю Маттіас Кендлінгер – диригент і композитор, а також засновник власного оркестру K&K Philharmoniker. Створений у 2002 році у Львові, сьогодні цей симфонічний оркестр є одним з провідних оркестрів Європи і дає понад 100 концертів на найкращих сценах Європи, а їх гастрольний тур планується за два роки наперед. Традиційно K&K Philharmoniker декілька разів на рік виступає у Львові як особливий музичний подарунок для всіх львівських любителів музики, а минулого року тут навіть був заснований " Фестиваль музики Маттіаса Кендлінгера". Наш кореспондент зустрівся з М. Кендлінгером, щоб дізнатись більше про друге видання цього фестивалю, який відразу мав величезний успіх і львів’яни та гості міста з нетерпінням чекають продовження.
Торік у Львові Ви запустили новий музичний фестиваль, і, на радість львівських поціновувачів музики, цього року Ви знову повернетеся вже з Другим фестивалем. Ви одразу очікували, що цей фестиваль стане хітом для української публіки? Я сподівався на це. І я втішений результатом. Який головний підсумок Ви зробили після минулорічного Фестивалю?
Я зауважив, що публіка любить мою музику, і тому я можу продовжувати йти своїм шляхом далі. Чому Львів був обраний головним місцем проведення Фестивалю? Львів завжди був і є нашим осередком, оркестр є у Львові вдома, Львів також став моєю другою батьківщиною. Що любителям музики слід очікувати від Другого фестивалю? Що, на Вашу думку, потрібно обов’язково відвідати?

ЯК СТАН ДУШІ І Н Т Е Р В ' Ю З А В С Т РІ Й С Ь К И М КО М П О З И Т О Р O М ТА Д ИРИГЕНТОМ М АТ ТІАСОМ ГЕОРГОМ К ЕНД ЛІНГЕРОМ На цьогорічному Фестивалі відбудуться 4 світові прем’єри. Обов’язково відвідати я порадив би Симфонію №. 3 "Права людини", якою відкривається Фестиваль. Іншою важливою подією, яку необхідно відвідати, є заключний концерт, на якому буде диригувати мій син Максиміліан Кендлінгер. Максиміліан виріс з цією музикою і був із самого початку поруч. Чи в цілому простіше і легше проводити промоцію своєї власної музики? (...сміється...) Спочатку — дещо важче до того моменту, коли публіка вже знає, чого очікувати. Після цього це стає простіше. Що означає для Вас успіх і чи Ви почуваєтеся успішним диригентом? Успіхом особисто для мене є коли на концерті я можу дати публіці
щось позитивне. Звичайно, коли економічний аспект цьому сприяє. Так, я думаю, що я є успішним диригентом, але, можливо, ще успішнішим композитором. Існує безліч описів ідеального стану душі для творчості. Що це для вас? Що підтримує цей ідеальний стан і що відволікає? Чи існують які-небудь стратегії для входження в цей стан? Мій ідеальний духовний стан для креативності та компонування є вночі, в напівсні. Перебування в контакті з природою та інколи денний сон підсилюють цей стан. Що відволікає чи заважає процесу компонування... час від часу келих вина не може зашкодити… Примітно, що ми прийшли у ХХІ століття із незмінною основною концепцією класичної музики. У вас є бачення музики, уявлення про те, якою музика може бути поза її теперішньою формою? Я вважаю, що основна концепція класичної музики залишиться незмінною, і що вона продовжуватиме розвиватися. Я не вірю в концепцію атональної музики. Які корисні ідеї для розвитку культурно-мистецького життя Україна може, на Вашу думку, запозичити в Австрії? Я переконаний, що австрійці можуть так само багато навчитися в українців, як і українці в австрійців. Можливо, класична музика підтримується і культивується трохи більше в Австрії, ніж в Україні. Але в Україні є більше молодих людей, які обрали музичну освіту, ніж в Австрії. Взагалі класична музика повинна мати більше поширення та присутності у засобах масової інформації, щоб кожний мав доступ до цієї чудової форми мистецтва. Розкажіть, будь ласка, більше про особливості ваших майбутніх музичних проектів у 2018 році. На мій погляд, наша особливість — сценічні дійства, які переконують і захоплюють. Яке ваше творче / музичне бачення себе через 10 років? Я хочу бути одним з найуспішніших композиторів XXI століття.

LVIV SOCIETY UKR AINE DR AWS CLOSER TO EUROPE Ukraine took a major step in closer integration with Europe by opening the new Beskyd Tunnel in the Carpathian Mountains on 24 May. The new tunnel crosses the mountains between the towns of Beskyd and Skotarske and connects the Ukrainian rail network with Corridor V of the pan-European transport network through a double-track link. Corridor V stretches from Venice / Trieste in northern Italy to Lviv via Slovenia and Hungary. The tunnel will take on 60 percent of rail traffic between Ukraine and the EU. At the tunnel’s opening, President Poroshenko said, “This is a project thanks to which Ukraine becomes closer to the European Union, and the European Union – to Ukraine”. EBRD representative Sevki Acuner added, “The new tunnel
is a positive example of the contemporary relationship between Ukraine and Europe.” The construction was financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (34.23 million EUR loan) and the European Investment Bank (55 million EUR loan). The project was also supported by a grant provided by the European Union and technical assistance by the EU and Austria. It replaces a 130-year-old railway tunnel built under the Austro-Hungarian Empire and will nearly quadruple its capacity from 12 trains per day to 46. It will significantly increase facilities for the export of Ukrainian products, while also reducing journey times between Lviv and Chop, the Ukrainian border town near the Hungarian and Slovak borders.
УКРАЇНА СТАЄ БЛИЖЧОЮ ДО ЄВРОПИ Україна зробила значний крок до тіснішої інтеграції з Європою, відкривши 24 травня новий Бескидський тунель в Карпатах. Ця складна інженерна споруда перетинає гори між станціями Бескид та Скотарське і сполучає українську залізничну мережу з V коридором загальноєвропейської транспортної мережі. Цей коридор простягається від Венеції/Трієста на півночі Італії до Львова через Словенію та Угорщину. На цей тунель припадатиме близько 60 відсотків залізничних перевезень між Україною та ЄС. На відкритті тунелю президент Порошенко сказав: "Це проект, завдяки якому Україна стає ближчою до Європейського Союзу, а Європейський Союз – до України". Представник ЄБРР Севкі Акунер додав: "Новий тунель є позитивним прикладом сучасних відносин між Україною та Європою". Будівництво двоколійного тунелю було профінансоване Європейським банком реконструкції та розвитку (кредит 34,23 млн. євро) та Європейським інвестиційним банком (55 млн. Євро). Проект також був підтриманий грантом, наданим Європейським Союзом та отримав технічну допомогу ЄС та Австрії. Він замінить залізничний тунель, побудований 130 років тому ще за часів Австро-Угорщини і майже вчетверо збільшить його пропускну здатність – з 12 поїздів на день до 46. GERMAN PRESIDENT ВІЗИТ ПРЕЗИДЕНТА STEINMEIER НІМЕЧЧИНИ VISITS LVIV ДО ЛЬВОВА German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was in Lviv for an official visit on 30 May, where he met with Lviv Region Head Oleh Syniutka and representatives of Lviv Regional Council and Lviv City Council. Steinmeier noted that Germany has always been willing to support the process of Ukraine’s internal transformation and that “little has been done” in this regard over the past few years. Many large industrial facilities with German investments have been opened in the Lviv region, including Leoni Wires & Cables and others. Currently the Lviv Regional State Administration provides support for over 500 investment projects, including those with German capital. The meeting was held at Lviv’s Potocki Palace, where the German president viewed the exhibition and left a note in the book of honorary guests. Later in the day, he met with students of Lviv’s I. Franko National University, Jewish community representatives, and took a city tour.

Ф. В. Штайнмайєр зазначив, що Німеччина завжди готова підтримувати процес внутрішніх перетворень в Україні та що "дещо було зроблено" в цьому напрямку за останні кілька років. На Львівщині було відкрито багато великих промислових об'єктів з німецькими інвестиціями, у тому числі Leoni Wires & Cables та інші. В даний час Львівська обласна державна адміністрація надає підтримку понад 500 інвестиційних проектів, у тому числі і з німецьким капіталом. Зустріч відбулась у Львівському палаці Потоцьких, де президент Німеччини оглянув виставку та залишив запис в книзі почесних гостей. Пізніше він зустрівся зі студентами Львівського національного університету ім. І. Франка, а також представниками єврейської громади та оглянув місто.

PRINCE OF LIECHTENSTEIN VISITS LVIV The Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein Alois and his wife Princess Sophia paid an official visit to Lviv on 7 June at the invitation of President Poroshenko. The visit was the first since the two states established diplomatic relations. The visit was used to discuss the deepening of political and economic ties between the nations and to discuss Liechtenstein’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Mayor Sadovyi noted the importance of having the Prince speak out on liberating Oleh Sentsov and other Ukrainian political prisoners. The Prince recalled that he has supported several projects in Ukraine in recent years, including those of both a humanitarian and reform nature. He also said that Liechtenstein community organizations have created an orphanage in Lviv, which he and his wife visited while in the city.

Під час візиту було обговоренно поглиблення політичних та економічних зв'язків між народами та підтримка Ліхтенштейном суверенітету й територіальної цілісності України. Мер Львова А. Садовий відзначив важливість того, що князь висловився за звільнення Олега Сенцова та інших українських політв'язнів. Принц зазначив, що він підтримав кілька гуманітарних та проектів реформ в Україні за останні роки. LEOPOLIS GRAND PRIX 2018 Summer season in Lviv officially kicked off with the running of the Leopolis Grand Prix on 1-3 June. Each year since 2011, Ukrainian retro car enthusiasts mark the first running of the legendary Leopolis Grand Prix, first held in the city in 1930 – before Lviv was even part of Ukraine. Today the retro car festival promotes motor tourism in Lviv and Ukraine and popularises the restoration of classic cars. This year’s event saw over 200 retro cars from 12 countries parade through the city centre, including the festival’s oldest model – a Leopolitan-owned 1912 Ford. The event’s highlight was the race around the ‘Lviv Triangle’, the classic route that runs along Vitovskoho to I. Franko to Stryska and Maidan Heroes. The team of Nazar and Yaroslav Bidnyk won this year’s race in their ZAZ Zaporozhets, aka ‘the hunchback’ (horbatyi). In addition to the race, other festival events included a classic car show, the ‘Elegant Driver’ competition, and a retro car parade.
ЛЕОПОЛІС ГРАН-ПРІ-2018 Літній сезон у Львові офіційно розпочався 1–3 червня під час проведення автоперегонів Леополіс Гран-Прі. Кожен рік, починаючи з 2011 року, українські ентузіасти автомобілів-ретро відзначають пробіг легендарного Леополіс Гран-Прі, який вперше пройшов у місті 1930 року. Сьогодні фестиваль ретро-автомобілів покликаний сприяти розвитку автомобільного туризму у Львові та Україні і популяризує рух за реставрацію класичних автомобілів. Цьогоріч до нашого міста з’їхались понад 200 ретро-автомобілів з 12 країн світу, серед яких, зокрема,
і найстаріша модель фестивалю – Ford 1912 року випуску, що належить львів’янину. Найважливішою подією стали перегони на трасі "Львівського трикутника", класичного маршруту, що проходить, як і колись, вулицями Д. Вітовського – І. Франка – Стрийською та Героїв Майдану. Команда Назара та Ярослава Бідників здобула перемогу в цьому сезоні на своїх "горбатих" "Запорожцях". Окрім перегонів у програмі фестивалю був також автосалон класичних авто, конкурс "Елегантний водій" та парад ретро-автомобілів вулицями міста.

BATYARS RIDE BIKES Batyar culture was on full display on 9 June as Leopolitans dove into Batyar style and culture on the annual Batyars on Bicycles retro bike ride. Participants cycled by the city’s most iconic landmarks dressed in retro outfits and took a short ‘tea time’ for a picnic in the park. Modeled after London’s famous ‘Tweed Run’, the event was designed to pay tribute to the city’s past and, especially, the Batyar culture that flourished here in the 19th and 20th centuries. Batyars on Bicycles showcases the essence of the Batyars’ world – jokes and fun, concerts from local bands, entertaining competitions like those for Best Dressed Man and Woman, and even a lottery! Tasty drinks and refreshments near the city centre made for an enjoyable and memorable experience for all.
БАТЯРИ НА РОВЕРАХ Невідомо, чи справжні львівські батяри їздили на роверах, але їх далекі нащадки 9 червня провели 5-й щорічній заїзд на ретро-велосипах – "Батяри на роверах". Учасники, об'їхали найзначніші пам'ятки міста, і навіть провели коротке чаювання на пікніку в парку. Наші батяри вирішили в цьому не відстати від британської столиці, де подібний Tweed Run проводиться з 2009 року. Загалом перегони Батяри на роверах, демонструючи сутність батярського існування, пройшли як належить – багато жартів, концерти місцевих музичних гуртів, веселі конкурси з нагородами за найелегантніше вбрану пані та пана, і навіть лотерея! Смачні почастунки з напоями чекали всіх на учасників, і ніхто не залишився сумним та байдужим цього прекрасного дня у Львові. LVIV TODAY | June 2018

Lviv's First Bike Patrol Hits the Streets L
viv’s very first bike units set off on their maiden patrols of the city on 21 May. Equipped by the European Union Advisory Mission (EUAM) Ukraine, a civilian CSDP mission, the patrols are tasked with enhancing order and security on Lviv’s streets. The EUAM donated the bicycles, uniforms, and other equipment to Lviv’s police officers. The first shift was conducted together with participants of the Lviv Bicycle Marathon to celebrate the city’s annual VeloDay (bike day). Lviv becomes the 12th city in Ukraine to launch the police bike units. A team of 40 bike patrol officers were specially trained by National Police trainers – who themselves were trained by EUAM and Canadian Police experts – to prepare for the street patrols. The new team is tasked with patrolling public spaces, like parks and the touristfilled historic city centre, to be close to Leopolitans and easy to reach out to. Community policing is a philosophy that aims to strengthen the links between police forces and the communities they serve. It’s an effective crime-reduction strategy that helps identify and prevent hotspots where crime or other antisocial behaviour occurs.

EUAM надала працівникам поліції велосипеди, уніформи та інше обладнання. Перше чергування відбулось спільно з учасниками львівського веломарафону, щоб відзначити щорічний велосипедний день міста. Львів став 12 містом України, де працюватимуть велосипедні підрозділи поліції. Перші 40 патрульних на велосипедах були спеціально підготовлені інструкторами національної поліції, яких, у свою чергу, навчали експерти EUAM та канадської поліції. Нова команда має завдання патрулювати громадські простори, як от міські парки та історичний центр міста, щоб завжди бути доступними для львів’ян та гостей міста. ow many tourists visit Ukraine each year? The only honest answer to that question is that nobody really knows. The available state statistics suggest growing numbers of international visitors in recent years, with 14.8 million people crossing into Ukraine in 2017 compared to 13.6 in 2016. However, these figures include all foreign nationals entering the country. Moldovan citizens currently account for the highest number
of visitors, followed by Belarusians and Russians, which strongly suggests that this cross-border traffic does not represent tourism in any traditional sense. Instead, the key reasons for Ukraine’s post-Soviet neighbors to pay a visit tend to include work, shopping or family visits.
THE CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS ARE
One country from Ukraine’s neighborhood that does not currently feature on the list of the country’s top visitors is Romania. Despite sharing a border with four Ukrainian regions (Uzhgorod, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi and Odesa administrative oblasts), relatively few Romanians visit Ukraine for tourism purposes. The official stats for 2017 show just over three-quarters of a million Romanian arrivals, but this total does not reflect the reality of the situation. “The real figure is much lower and is possibly less than 100,000 Romanian tourists,” says

Ukrainian Deputy Minister for Economic Development and Trade Mikhail Titarchuk, who is responsible for the country’s tourism trade. He believes that the Ukrainian tourism industry must look to the country’s immediate neighbors as its primary non-domestic market, and is hopeful that closer bilateral cooperation and improved connections can help attract more Romanian tourists to Ukraine. Thirty-something Titarchuk represents the new generation of senior Ukrainian government officials, a role he underlines by arriving to chat with Business Ukraine magazine on a hipster-friendly electric scooter. However, there is nothing faddish or frivolous about his pragmatic vision for the Ukrainian tourism industry. Tourism is one of Titarchuk’s portfolios at the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, and it is a sector commonly regarded as brimming with potential. However, frustrations remain over the failure to upgrade outdated and inconvenient border crossing facilities along the Romanian-Ukrainian border. The EU had allocated significant funding for a project designed to modernize Ukrainian border crossings with Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland, but the almost EUR 30 million initiative was cancelled in early 2018 due to dissatisfaction with Ukraine’s failure to meet its commitments.
The Deputy Minister also identifies considerable scope for cooperation in the Black Sea cruise market. Both Romania and Ukraine can offer attractive Black Sea destinations for international cruise liners to consider. The challenge will be getting other Black Sea nations to join the initiative and present cruise companies with sufficiently diverse itineraries. The Russian occupation of Crimea creates considerable complications in this direction, but cruises often pass by geopolitical hotspots and contested regions in other parts of the world, so the Black Sea remains an interesting avenue to explore as Romanian and Ukrainian officials look for ways to boost tourism cooperation.

the only Ukrainian cities able to boast of anything approaching an international profile. Part of the problem is Ukraine’s lack of accessibility. “Logistics is always going to be a key factor for tourists,” says Titarchuk. “When we talk about boosting the numbers of Romanian tourists, we clearly need more flights between Bucharest and Ukraine, better border crossings, more convenient rail connections, and ferry crossings.”
WANTED: BETTER BORDER CROSSINGS The situation is already showing some signs of improvement. Titarchuk points to the recent progress made improving the Odesa Oblast highway linking the Black Sea port city with the Romanian border region. He says this is one example of how the two countries are gradually LVIV TODAY | June 2018
Titarchuk is hopeful that bilateral cooperation with his Romanian colleagues will help to energize the relationship and overcome the kind of institutional obstacles that derailed the planned EU-funded border crossing improvements. A Romania-Ukraine Economic Commission met in July 2017 for what was the first such meeting in a decade. This led to the establishment of a working group on tourism that convened in Kyiv in December 2017 for its inaugural meeting. The goals of the working group, says Titarchuk, include creating greater tourism flows in both directions and exploring the possibilities of putting together mutual tour packages. One of the focuses of the working group is the tourism potential of the Carpathian Mountains, which serve as one of the most attractive tourism assets for both Ukraine and Romania. Ukraine ratified the Carpathian Convention in May 2017, which promotes the idea of sustainable tourism and provides a framework for standardized tourism products across the many international borders of the Carpathian region. “The Carpathian Convention can serve as a platform for the development of Romanian tourism in Ukraine,” says Titarchuk. “We have not previously done a good job of promoting Ukraine among potential Romanian visitors, but the Carpathian Mountains are well-known and can help us to make the breakthrough.”

LOGICAL PARTNERS Ultimately, Titarchuk recognizes that much will depend on the practicalities of improving connections between the two countries. As we come towards the end of our conversation, he digs out his smartphone and searches for information on train services from Kyiv to Bucharest. “You see? The train journey currently takes twenty-seven hours,” he quips. This will have to change before Ukraine can expect to attract significant numbers of Romanian tourists, but the objective is a worthy one. Neighboring Romania is an obvious source of tourists for Ukraine. As Kyiv officials explore how to capitalize on the country’s untapped tourism potential, the immediate neighborhood would be the most logical place to start.
The Carpathian Mountains are particularly appealing to the tourism industry because they offer attractions throughout the year and are not limited to one particular season. “We can promote skiing throughout the winter months and outdoor activities for the rest of the year including everything from cycling and rafting to hiking and traditional camping holidays. Then there is the entire segment of health tourism. The spa resorts of the Carpathian region are already popular throughout post-Soviet markets.”
BLACK SEA CRUISES While the Carpathian Mountains can act as a gateway to greater Romanian tourism in Ukraine, Titarchuk sees it as only one element in a far wider process. Given the long history of Romanian involvement in southwestern Ukraine and in the Bessarabia region in particular, there

Counterparty evades its obligation and does not return the funds voluntarily, though most probably possesses necessary amount of money. Correspondingly, I would like you to advise how we should proceed in order to enforce the judgment in the most effective manner?
EXPERT TALKS On May 15, the morning started very productively for company members of the Association. As part of the new format meeting ‘Expert Talks’ and activities of Customs Committee, Levko Prokipchuk, Head of Lviv Customs of SFS, and Oleg Kyryievskyi, EBA Western Ukrainian Office Customs Committee Chairman, shared some advices on establishment of foreign economic activity. We have discussed risk management in customs issues area, protection of intellectual property of importers, export findings, customs value, features of product classification, customs and tax consulting, and also shared thoughts on possible changes in legislation. We would like to thank our experts for your time, practical tips and professionalism, and, of course, we are grateful to Advice Group for hospitality!
Enforcement proceedings in many of the cases was problematic and not very effective due to many reasons such as legislative gaps and reluctance of state officials to take all necessary measures for the tracing of assets and their further effective sale. Nonetheless, not long ago new legislative acts were adopted and since the last year first private enforcement officers, who do not belong to state authorities, started their activity in Ukraine. According to my experience, cooperation namely with them has proved to be effective. When enforcing the court decision, inter alia, the following issues are to be kept in mind: • Enforcement proceedings may be initiated by the place of debtor’s location or the location of its assets. An entity is free to choose the private enforcement officer in corresponding region, information on whom is available in the online register of private enforcement officers of Ukraine; • In case the amount of debt is higher than approx. 650 thousands EUR, private enforcement officer may not enforce corresponding judgment during the first year of his activity; • Enforcement proceedings may be initiated within 3 years period after judgment came into force; • Obligatory advance payment for initiation of enforcement proceedings constitutes 2% from the amount of debt, but may not exceed approx. 1200 EUR; • Not all property registers are available in electronic form in Ukraine, thus, tracing of assets is time consuming and needs the involvement of different state bodies; • In most of the cases the sale of debtor’s property shall be conducted through an electronic auction; • After initiation of enforcement proceedings, additional 10% from the amount of debt (as a remuneration of enforcement officer) shall be collected from the debtor. In case of debtor’s solvency and readiness for communication, such argument may be used within negotiations for possible voluntary recovery of the debt;
THURSDAY TALKS On the last day of spring, on 31 May, we were actively gossiping about money and disclosing the philosophy of the game on stock market, investing in real estate, possible contributions to various investment funds and the role of banks in this. Participants shared their own experience on passive sources of income, and talked about “failures” that helped many rethink their investment strategies in general. We hope that such an interesting discussion during the meeting motivated everyone to think over savings and expenses. We appreciate everyone’s participation! LOCAL OPTIMISM VS NATIONAL PESSIMISM These findings suggest that as cities have gained the ability to allocate more tax money for municipal projects, road repair works have improved markedly. As noted in IRI’s 2017 survey, travel between Ukrainian cities (with the exception of Kyiv) is still remarkably infrequent. This is at least in part due to the poor quality of roads and related infrastructure. This year’s improvements at the municipal level, together with last summer's intensive road repair works on several major inter-city highways, bode well for increased interconnectivity across Ukraine.
UKRAINIAN POLITICIANS MUST MAKE THE CASE THAT DECENTRALIZATION IS MORE THAN A LOCAL SUCCESS STORY In today’s Ukraine, pessimism at the national level is a well-established phenomenon and one that often obscures the very real progress that is taking place at the local level. In fact, since 2015 the local picture has often been strikingly optimistic across Ukraine, at least according to polling data compiled by the International Republican Institute (IRI). For the past four years, residents of Ukraine’s largest cities have consistently noted an improving municipal environment while expressing optimism in their local governments and voicing a more positive outlook for the future economic prospects of the locality. Many see this relatively positive but markedly localized perspective as the fruit of Ukraine’s decentralization reforms. Far-reaching financial and administrative decentralization legislation passed by the Ukrainian parliament in 2014 and 2015 is now allowing mayors and city councils across the country to work with greater shares of tax revenue than ever before. This is providing local authorities with the ability to spend on projects previously managed by appointed oblast-level administrators or handled even higher up the national administrative food chain. This decentralization reform process is in many ways a remarkable achievement worthy of far greater international attention,

especially as it is taking place despite the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, the continued occupation of Crimea, and an economy still trying to find its footing following the shocks of 2014-15. The International Republican Institute is in a good position to assess the impact of decentralization reforms on Ukrainian attitudes towards local government. With the recent release of its fourth annual Ukraine nationwide municipal survey, the IRI now has four years of tracking data indicating how these reforms are affecting Ukrainian municipalities. The annual survey, which has been carried out every year since 2015, sought the opinions of more than 19,000 Ukrainians from regional oblast centers across Ukraine. The survey results for 2018 include responses from Mariupol and Severodonetsk as proxies for the traditional regional centers in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. The results of the 2018 survey offer a window into the realities on the ground in regional centers that international coverage of Ukraine often overlooks. Understanding developments at the sub-national level in Ukraine is critical to understanding where Ukraine is heading at the national level. This is particularly important given the dominance in national
and international media coverage of large set-piece reforms such as the anti-corruption court, future IMF tranches and the persistently pessimistic national political outlook. In addition to highlighting local-level successes, the latest survey confirms long-term trends indicating that many of the reforms passed by parliament since 2014 are having a positive impact on communities throughout the country. Roads and kindergartens have been built and public spaces refurbished, while administrative services have been streamlined and made more efficient and transparent. All this is because of national government initiatives, but with the results taking root far from Kyiv, this progress tends to go largely unrecognized beyond the local communities themselves. Several interesting new findings from across Ukraine's cities include signs of cautious optimism that the economic situation may improve in the coming year. While high inflation and energy tariffs negatively impacted perceptions of the national trajectory, at the local level residents are clearly seeing the local economies of their respective cities improve. Additionally, in 17 out of 24 surveyed cities, residents noted a significant improvement in the quality of roads from 2016 to 2017, while only three cities felt that road quality had actually worsened.
Despite these successes, which are attributable to both local and national authorities, national leaders are not receiving any of the credit. Instead, local mayors and city councils have capitalized on the public credit they have received to proactively effect public change. With national elections scheduled for 2019, it is imperative that political parties at all levels, but particularly on the national level, communicate their successes to the Ukrainian people and make the connection clear between national decentralization reforms and improving circumstances at the local level. In doing so, political leaders at all levels should make it clear that decentralization is not just a victory for local government. Decentralization is both a product of a national initiative and a platform capable of building better outcomes for the entire country.

Bodybuilding: European Championships Lviv’s Malevich Night Club hosted the WABBA European Open Bodybuilding Championships on 19 May. Bodybuilding was a relatively unknown pastime in the USSR but has been enthusiastically embraced in the region since its collapse. Ukrainian bodybuilders and fitness performers have made their mark at the world level and the country remains among the most competitive in the modern sport. In Lviv, Donetsk region’s Serhiy Chernyak and Kamyanets-Podilskyi’s Anastasiya Samoylovych bested some of Europe’s finest musclemen and women to be named champions and will now compete in the world championships in Italy later this year. Lviv was well represented with Ihor Didyak claiming the junior title and Liliya Yatsyshyn winning the Miss Model category. Other Ukrainian winners included Kyiv’s Volodomyr Osnik in the men’s fitness category, Kateryna Kalchuk as Miss Bikini (over 165cm), and Donetsk’s 2008 national champion Yuriy Kovalev, in the up to 175cm category. Other winners include Greece’s Georgios Aihmalotidis in the super master’s division (50+ years old) and Italy’s Roberto Veloteri in the men’s model class.
Lviv's best Athlete of the Month: Anastasiya Voznyak Lviv’s Anastasiya Voznyak was named April’s Athlete of the Month for her medal-winning performance at the third stage of the Rhythmic Gymnastics Grand Prix series that took place in France in March. As part of the Ukrainian team, the 19-year-old twotime Olympian picked up a complete set of medals – gold in hoops, bronze in balls and hoops, and silver for overall performance. Lviv Today congratulates Anastasiya on her achievements and wishes her all the best in her upcoming competitions.
Бодібілдинг: Чемпіонат Європи У Львівському нічному клубі "Малевич" 19 травня відбувся європейський відкритий чемпіонат з бодібілдингу WABBA. Бодібілдінг був відносно невідомим заняттям в СРСР, але з ентузіазмом був зустрінутий з моменту його розпаду. Українські культуристи та бодібілдери зробили свій вклад на світовому рівні, і Україна залишається серед найбільш конкурентоспроможних у сучасному спорті. У Львові донеччанин Сергій Черняк та Анастасія Самойлович з Кам'янця-Подільського перевершили деяких з найкращих чоловіків та жінок Європи, здобувши звання чемпіонів, і тепер вони змагатимуться на чемпіонатах світу в Італії ще цього року. Львів представляв Ігор Дідяк, що претендував на титул серед юніорів, а Лілія Яцишин перемогла у категорії "Міс модель". Найкраща спортсменка місяця: Анастасія Возняк Львів’янка Анастасія Возняк була визнана спортсменкою місяця за свій успішний виступ на третьому етапі серії Гран-прі з художньої гімнастики, що проходив у Франції в березні. У складі української команди 19-річна дворазова учасниця олімпіади здобула повний набір медалей – золото за вправи з обручем, бронзу за вправи з м’ячем і обручем, а також срібло – у загальному заліку. Наша редакція вітає Анастасію з її чудовими досягненнями та бажає їй всього найкращого і перемог у майбутніх змаганнях.
Water Polo: Lviv Wins Ukrainian Championship Lviv’s Dynamo water polo club took home their third straight Ukrainian Water Polo Championship ahead of runners-up Kharkiv Slobozhanets and third-place Mariupol Illichevets. Lviv’s Dynamo water polo team won their third straight Ukrainian Water Polo Championship after finishing ahead of 2nd-place Kharkiv and 3rd-place Mariupol Illichevets. The achievement marks their fourth overall title in the Ukrainian Championship. The brilliance of coach Igor Zinkevych in leading the team to another glorious sporting achievement bodes well as the team looks to bring home even more titles next season. Lviv’s SKA sport complex hosted finals of the Ukrainian Championship on May 27th. The event saw hometown favourites Dynamo to start game against team of Kharkiv region with 5-1, however quite quickly the score became – 8:8, and penalty shoot outs decided the fate of the Champion’s title. After 2 years break, Leopolitan team got back title of Champions in the Ukrainian Super League. The brilliance of coach Oleksiy Shvedov led the team to their championship overall and resulted in what has become a Dynamo tradition after winning major tournaments – seeing overjoyed Dynamo players tackling their coach into the pool! This was a great gift for the team which this year is celebrating 70 years anniversary of its founding.
Водне поло: Львівські ватерполісти – чемпіони України! Львівська команда з водного поло "Динамо" виграла третій підряд чемпіонат України, перемігши команду "Слобожанець" Харків і залишивши на третьому місці "Іллічівець" з Маріуполя. Львів’яни таки стали втретє поспіль чемпіонами України з водного поло, випередивши того ж "Слобожанця" та Маріупольського "Іллічівця". А загалом наші хлопці вже мають чотири титули чемпіонів України. Фінал чемпіонату України з водного поло відбувся у львівському спортивному комплексі "СКА" 27 травня. У поєдинку з командою Харківської області львів’яни спочатку взяли ініціативу в свої руки – 5:1, проте досить швидко рахунок став 8:8, а за пенальті перемогли таки наші (4:2). Після дворічної перерви львівські динамівці знову стали чемпіонами Суперліги України. Це звання наша команда здобула в напруженій боротьбі під чуйним керівництвом тренера Олексія Шведова, за що його, традиційно після переможного завершення фінального матчу вдячні ватерполісти дружно вкинули в басейн. Це був своєрідний подарунок на ювілей 70-річчя команди, який святкуватиметься наступного року.

Lviv Half Marathon Over 3000 participants from all over Ukraine and abroad were in Lviv to participate in the 3rd Molokiya Lviv Half Marathon. This year the half marathon has received the five-star certification from the European Athletics Federation, its highest. Leopolitan runners and guests of the city raced the 21 km main course as well as the 5 km and 2 km races. This year additional races were included, like the 1x10 km + 1x11.0975 km HeForShe Relay, the 3x5 km + 1x6.0975 km Under Armour Relay, and the 1000m, 500m, and 100m races for kids. There was also a 2 km charity race to raise funds to purchase rehabilitation equipment for the Yurii Lypa Lviv Regional Hospital for War Veterans. The hospital is a powerful medical diagnostic complex created for the provision of medical care to war veterans and disabled, children of war, liquidators of Chornobyl, the elderly, and their family members. For the second straight year Taras Salo won the men’s race with a time of 1:08:51, while Bukovyna’s Yuliia Profis ended up on top of a fierce women’s competition with the time of 1:19:18.
Lviv Half Marathon Третій півмарафон Molokiya Lviv Half Marathon 2018 зібрав понад 3000 учасників з усієї України, а також із зарубіжних країн. Цього року львівський півмарафон отримав найвищий рейтинг Європейської Федерації легкої атлетики – 5 зірок. Це найвищий рівень сертифікації та оцінки, розроблений провідними експертами Європи. Львівські бігуни та гості міста змагались на основній трасі довжиною 21 км, а також на 5 км та 2 км. Відбулись спеціальні забіги: 1×10 км + 1×11,0975 км естафета HeForShe Дніпро півмарафон та 3×5 км + 1×6,0975 км, естафета Under Armor та змагання для дітей на 1000 м, 500 м і 100 м. У програмі півмарафону відбувся благодійний забіг на 2 км для збору коштів на придбання реабілітаційного обладнання для Львівської обласного госпіталю ветеранів війни ім. Юрія Липи. Ця лікарня – це потужний медико-діагностичний комплекс, надає медичну допомогу інвалідам та ветеранам війни, членам сімей хворих воїнів, дітям-інвалідам війни, ліквідаторам Чорнобильської катастрофи. Другий раз поспіль переможцем серед чоловіків став Тарас Сало (1:08:51), а серед жінок перемогла представниця Буковини Юлія Профіс (1:19:18).
Motocross: Lviv's Open Cup Lviv’s legendary Mayorivka racetrack played host to a series of Lviv Open Cup motocross competition on 20 May. Formerly known as one of Europe’s most difficult tracks, the Mayorivka event drew competitors from across Ukraine, Lithuania, and Poland. Organised by Lviv’s Zazirya Moto Club, Lviv City Council’s sports and youth department provided over 100,000 UAH in funding. Participants faced off in many different categories, including open, amateur, adult, veterans, and children. European champion Dmytro Asmanov claimed the event’s most prestigious title – the open championship.

ising 8,850 metres (29,035 feet) into the sky, Mount Everest is literally located at the top of the world. Since being crowned the world’s tallest mountain, people have inevitably wanted to conquer it, and many have failed. More than 2,200 people have succeeded in their endeavours, while more than 200 have lost their lives attempting the climb. So why climb Everest? “Because it is there”, English mountaineer George Mallory famously said. On 25 May, that’s just what a team of Ukrainian
The Nepalese who live to the south of Everest have always known it was special. They call it ‘Sagarmatha’, which means ‘goddess of the sky’ or ‘forehead of the sky’. The Tibetans to the north call it ‘Chomolungma’, or ‘mother goddess of the world’. Politics prevented would-be climbers from attempting Everest for many years because neither the Nepalese or Tibetan governments welcomed strangers into their countries. But in 1921, after much diplomatic negotiation, Tibet opened its borders and the first of many expeditions began on the mountain’s north side. In 1953 New Zealand’s Edmund Hillary became the first person known to have reached the summit, alongside Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. Beginning in the 1990s, experienced climbers began organising group tours, which made Everest accessible to less experienced people for the first time.

Of the 2,200 people that have summited Everest, just 24 Ukrainians are on the list. Serhei Bershov and Mykhaylo Turkeyvych (from the Lviv Region village of Utishkiv) were the first Ukrainian’s to summit Everest in 1982, while Iryna Halay became the first Ukrainian woman to do it in May 2016. tional Ukrainian embroidered towel, while Ukraine’s Stella Shabliovska entered the Guiness Book of World Records in December 2017 when she did fitness exercises for 30 minutes. Not initially part of her plan, Shabliovska joined when organiser Lee Hart needed a sixth person to set the record. On their return, Horodechnyi, Semerenko, and Pozdnii were festively greeted by family members, fans, and politicians. Horodechnyi was even awarded Lviv’s Golden Coat of Arms for being the first Leopolitan to conquer the world’s highest mountain.
THE KING OF MOUNTAINS Everest hasn’t always been considered the king of mountains. It wasn’t until 1852 that a Bengali mathematician and surveyor named Radhanath Sikhdar determined that ‘Peak XV’ was indeed the highest point on earth (confirmed in 1865). The mountain was named after Sir George Everest, the Surveyor General that oversaw the original survey of the mountain.

ожен зі школи пам’ятає, що гора Еверест (Джомолунгма) – найвища гірська вершина світу і має 8850 м. Здавен відважні люди намагались цю вершину підкорити, хоча й не всім це вдалось. Понад 2200 альпіністів з усього світу таки ступили на омріяну вершину, а близько двох сотень знайшли останній притулок у крижаних ущелинах, так і не дійшовши до вершини. То чому ж людей так тягне на вершину Евересту? "Тому, що вона там є", – казав знаменитий англійський альпініст Джордж Меллорі. І от команда українських альпіністів у складі Романа Городечного зі Львова, Дмитра Семененка з Дніпра разом з керівником команди Тарасом Позднієм з Білої Церкви підкорили цю вершину 25 травня. При цьому Городечний став першим львів’янином, який побував на "даху світу". LVIV TODAY | June 2018
КОРОЛЬ ГІР Еверест не завжди вважався королем гір. Лише у 1852 році бенгальський математик і геодезист Раджанат Сіхдар визначив, що "Пік XV" дійсно є найвищою точкою на Землі (що було підтверджено у 1865 р.). Гора була названа на честь сера Джорджа Евереста, Головного геодезиста Індії, який керував геодезичним обстеженням гори. Непальці, які живуть на південь від Евересту, завжди знали, що це особливе місце. Вони називають гору "Сагарматха", що означає "богиня неба" або "чоло неба". Тибетці, що живуть на північ від гори, називають її Джомолунгма, або "мати богиня світу". Політична обстановка не дозволяла альпіністам намагатися підкорити Еверест протягом багатьох років, тому що ні
З усіх 2200 альпіністів, які підкорили Еверест, лише 24 українця. Сергій Бершов з Харкова та Михайло Туркевич з с Утішків, Львівської обл. були першими українцями, що побували на вершині у 1982 році, а Ірина Галай стала першою українською жінкою, яка зробила це в травні 2016 року. Через місяць Тетяна Яловчак залишила на вершині традиційний український вишиваний рушник, а Стелла Шабліовська увійшла до Книги рекордів Гіннеса, коли вона в грудні 2017 року займалась фітнес-вправами протягом 30 хвилин на висоті 5360 м. у складі групи з шести осіб під керівництвом британського фітнес-інструктора Лі Харта. Після повернення Р. Городечного, Д. Семененка та Т. Позднія святково зустріли члени їх сімей, вболівальники та політики. Р. Городечний навіть був удостоєний Золотого герба Львова, як перший львів’янин, який підкорив найвищу вершину світу.
