E U R O P E ' S " OT H E R " MIG R A N T C R ISIS HOW UK R AINE IS HELPING WIT H E UROPE ’S MIGR ATION CRISIS – A ND WH Y IT SHOULD BE REC OGNISED FOR IT. “Italy has caused a meltdown”. “Germany’s migrant crisis continues”. “Migrant crisis threatens to tear Europe apart”. If you read the headlines from the last month, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Europe’s ‘migrant crisis’ – now in its third year – is ready to tear the continent apart. Italy is refusing boats of refugees. Germany is conceding to shipping refugees to holding centres. And countries like Turkey receive billions of euros to process their asylum applications before they even reach Europe. Meanwhile, Ukraine is dealing with Europe’s “other” migrant crisis, with nearly two million people displaced from their homes due to the conflict in the east. Despite not requiring visas to cross into neighbouring Europe, Ukrainians have yet to flood Europe. Indeed, it is the Ukrainian government that has borne the brunt of the cost of refugee resettlement. In so doing, it has prevented Europe’s “other” migrant crisis from spilling into the EU. Maybe its time it got some assistance for it? to settle elsewhere. These people haven’t flooded Europe; they have settled in other regions of Ukraine, including more than 12,000 here in the Lviv region. Less than 25,000 Ukrainians have applied for asylum in Europe since 2016 – just one percent of Ukraine’s displaced population. In fact, the number even dropped last year – from 12,650 to 10,300. This despite more than 555,000 Ukrainians visiting the EU after visa requirements were waived. Several European countries, in fact, moved Ukraine to their ‘safe countries’ list last year, effectively ruling out asylum applications for any Ukrainians outside of Crimea and Donbas. Essentially, Europe has told Ukraine to take care of their own. And Ukraine, for the most part, has.

That’s 1.8 million fewer people that the EU needs to deal with. To date, Ukraine has received no additional funding or favours in doing so. Ukraine is not the main destination for music fans, however it is rapidly becoming an epicentre of cool events as it launches a couple of new festivals every year. Another key advantage of planning a trip to Ukraine is that local festivals are way cheaper here than in Europe. The diversity of performers and music genres has always been impressive, and this year isn’t any different. Music fest, holiday celebrations, traditional markets and art events – check our list of best summer festivals in Ukraine and make your festival road map.

FAINE MISTO MUSIC FESTIVAL 19–22 July at the Ternopil Hippodrome Faine Misto is one of the few Ukrainian festivals that features nearly all musical genres – from folk, rock, and alternative to pop, dance, and even reggae. Returning for its sixth year, Faine Misto attracts only the biggest Ukrainian and foreign musicians to one of its seven festival stages! This year more than 50 groups from as far away as South America will be in Ternopil to perform. Among the many groups you’ll want the check out include Finland’s The Rasmus, Sweden’s Adept, and the USA’s The Gitas. Popular Ukrainian groups performing include Onuka, Pianoboy, Sasha Boole, and Megamass. Organisers promise that this year’s event area will morph into a real megalopolis, with streets, squares, and gathering spaces with unique locations and architecture. TUSTAN MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL 3–5 August at Tustan Fortress in the village of Uruch, Skole region It was back in 2006 when one of Ukraine’s most successful medieval festivals was launched at the Tustan Fortress in the village of Urich. Taking place from 3-5 August, this year’s event will offer visitors a rich and informative programme on Ukrainian medieval culture while honouring its heroic past. Festivalgoers will be able to enjoy many colourful events throughout the festival, like workshops in archery, dancing, and medieval instruments and classes on ancient folk crafts like blacksmithing, clay sculpting, weaving, and horse riding. Feel the excitement of the knights’ tournaments by taking in fight re-enactments from the 9th to 19th Centuries. WOODSTOCK UKRAINE 9–11 August in the village of Zavereshchytsa (30 km from Lviv) The Woodstock Ukraine summer festival will take place near the village of Zavereshchytsa from 9–11 August. As always, the music holiday will feature workshops, theatrical performances, music, and competitions on three stages. Festival fans likely know that they first Woodstock in 1969 became an act of protest against the war in Vietnam and this reincarnation has become a rallying cry for peace considering the situation in Eastern Ukraine. Festivalgoers will hear from over 60 artists, including new and more established Ukrainian bands. Aiming to promote peace in Ukraine,

KOKTEBEL JAZZ FESTIVAL 16–19 August in Chernomorsk (Odesa region) The popular coastal holiday destination of Chernomorsk, with its well-developed shops, pubs, restaurants, and markets, will be the host for this year’s Koktebel Jazz Festival from 16-19 August. Dating back to 2003, Koktebel has become famous far beyond Ukraine for its sparkling acts and laid-back vibes. This year festivalgoers will be delighted with its audience-oriented atmosphere and outstanding gigs. The lineup features English vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Martina Gillian Topley-Bird, iconic Jamaican reggae group Inner Circle, new Swedish group Koop Oscar Orchestra fronted by Oscar Simonsson, and influential English electronic band Morcheeba, who will present their new album Blaze Away. The hypnotic and charismatic Lithuanian duo Beissoul & Einius are said to sound like “the future of music” and are sure to cause quite a stir as their extraterrestrial and soulful vocals are so seductive and unpredictable that you will lose the sense of the ground. Named Lithuania’s No. 1 electronic band, their hit ‘Yak ty i Skazav’ (As You Said) is sung by the audience at every venue in Ukraine. With over 50 groups on three stages over three days of non-stop partying, ZaxidFest has earned its place as a major fixture on the European festival calendar. One of Ukraine’s premier music events and hottest summer festival tickets, this year’s lineup features bands like Sepultura, the Guano Apes, Bullet for My Valentine, Adam Gontier, and We Butter the Bread With Butter. THIS SUMMER UKRAINIAN SONG PROJECT 18 August at 18:00 at Arena Lviv (199, Stryiska str.) Arena Lviv will be the site for the Ukrainian Song Project on 18 August. This grand musical event aims to find talented, young artists in the hopes of distributing and promoting Ukrainian music from different genres across Ukraine and abroad. The goal of the competition is to promote artistic expression, national pride and Ukraine’s diverse culture. As this musical delight is dedicated to the 27th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence, festive program will feature performances by 27 artists. The Ukrainian Song Project is a ground-breaking initiative that will be broadcasted by several TV and radio stations in Ukraine and other countries. Headliners include acts already famous in Ukraine, like Vopli Vidopliassova, Tayanna, Kadnay, Dilemma, Navi, Alyosha, О.Torvald, which represented Ukraine at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv as well as Melovin, Ukraine’s representative at 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Special attention is expected to be driven to performance by Polish rock band CHEMIA guitarist of which is Wojciech Balczun, former CEO of Ukraine's state rail monopoly Ukrzaliznytsia. INTERNATIONAL HUTSUL FESTIVAL 27–29 July in Yaremche (Ivano-Frankivsk region) Ukraine’s annual International Hutsul Festival will take place from 27–29 July. Traditionally held in one of Ukraine’s eight Hutsul districts in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, and Transcarpathia oblasts, this year’s event will be held in Yaremche in the IvanoFrankivsk region. Amateur artistic groups from across the Hutsul areas will compete for prizes on stages of several genres, including song, music, theatre, and choreography. Additionally, each district will present an exhibition of folk artists to showcase the region’s finest achievements in crafts like embroidery, wood carving, and other applied arts. A handcraft fair featuring authentic products and national souvenirs will highlight Hutsul folk art, customs, and culture. The annual Authors’ Reading Month – the largest literary festival in Central Europe – will be held in Lviv from 1 July to 4 August. First held in Brno, Czech Republic in 2000, it soon spread to nearby centres: in 2011 to Ostrava, Czech Republic, in 2012 to Wroclaw and Kosice in Poland, and in 2015 to Lviv. The focus of the festival is twofold: on one hand, it concentrates on presenting the national literature of the hosting countries; on the other it selects a neutral country each year to become the ‘guest of honour’. This year’s guest is Turkey. Each day throughout the festival two authors are introduced – one visiting and one local. In all, each city will host 62 writers throughout the festival, as well as over 300 authors’ readings. This year Leopolitan bookworms and guests of the city will have the wonderful opportunity to meet some of Turkey’s greatest contemporary writers, like Nedim Gursel, Iskender Pala, and Ozgur Mumcu. European authors include the Czech Republic’s Katarzyna Boni, Poland’s Weronika Gogola, and Slovakia’s Dusan Vicen. Ukraine will be represented by the talents of Marjana Savka, Oksana Bula, Dmytro Lazutkyn, Viktoriya Amelina, and Ostap Drozdov. All readings are broadcasted live in their original language and available online with Ukrainian subtitles. У Львові з 1 липня по 4 серпня відбудеться щорічний Місяць авторських читань – найбільший літературний фестиваль у Центральній Європі. Вперше він відбувся 2000 року у чеському місті Брно й незабаром поширився у найближчі центри: 2011 рік – Острава, 2012 рік – Вроцлав та Кошице, а з 2015 року – у Львів. Мета фестивалю подвійна – з одного боку, він зосереджений на представленні національної літератури країни-господаря а з іншого – кожного року вибирається нейтральна країна, яка стає "почесним гостем". Таким гостем цього року є Туреччина. Кожного дня протягом усього фестивалю тут представляють двох авторів – одного гостя й одного місцевого. Lviv’s Parajanov Festival, held in the post-industrial, multiethnic suburbs of Lviv, aims to revive the work and philosophy of one of the 20th Century’s greatest directors, Serhiy Parajanov. Born in Georgia to Armenian parents, Parajanov felt at home equally in Armenia, Georgia, and Ukraine. He gained international acclaim for the visual intensity of his films, like the rhapsodic celebration of Ukrainian folk culture, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (Tini Zabutyh Predkiv) or his masterpiece on Armenia poet Sayat Nova, The Colour of Pomegranates (Nran Guyne). His brilliance went unrecognised at home due to his critical film content and he was banned from working and imprisoned several times until the early 1980s.

Serhiy Parajanov knew that freedom remains the foundation of everything. The concept of ‘freedom’ has its own measurement, weight, and even price. What are its limits? How were they understood in Parajanov’s time? How are the understood now? This festival is the ideal way to find answers to these questions through a mix of artistic events and educational platforms. The goal is to inspire young Leopolitans to engage in these conversations and activities with Parajanov’s collaborators, national and international artists. Events include film screenings, readings, workshops, and extensive educational and discussion programmes for children and adults at the Sputnik Cultural Centre and Levandivski Park. Львівський фестиваль Параджанова, який проходить у постіндустріальному передмісті Львова, має на меті ознайомлення широкого загалу з творчістю й філософією одного з найвидатніших режисерів ХХ століття Сергія Параджанова. Народжений в Грузії у вірменській родині, Параджанов відчувався вдома однаково у Вірменії, Грузії та в Україні. Він здобув міжнародне визнання за фільм "Тіні забутих предків", знятий на українській кіностудії ім. О. Довженка у 1964 році, а також за його шедевр про вірменського поета Саят Нова "Цвіт граната". Його творчість залишалась неприйнятою в СРСР через критичний зміст фільму, йому було заборонено працювати, і він кілька разів був ув'язнений на початку 1980-х років.

Сергій Параджанов знав, що свобода – це основа всього. Поняття "свобода" має свій власний вимір, вагу та навіть ціну. Які її межі? Як їх розуміли в часи Параджанова? Як їх розуміють сьогодні? Цей фестиваль є ідеальним способом знайти відповіді на ці запитання через поєднання художніх подій та освітніх майданчиків. Метою є натхнення молодих львів’ян брати участь у цих розмовах та заходах зі співавторами Параджанова, українськими та зарубіжними митцями. Eurofanz – the traditional fan-fest for football supporters from across Europe – will be held in Lviv for the 12th consecutive year from 13–15 July. This year’s event will see 21 teams of international and club teams’ fans. Supporters from France, Sweden, Ireland, Scotland, and Bulgaria will join counterpart fans of clubs like England’s Newcastle, Sweden’s AIK, the Netherlands’ Feyenoord, Belarus’ Dinamo Minsk, and Finland’s Helsinki. Two Ukrainian teams will also take part in the competition. Each fan delegation brings humanitarian supplies like sportswear, toys, and sweets for children at Lviv’s orphanages and a special ‘From European fans to Lviv children’ charitable act will be held on 15 July. Lviv hosted one of Europe’s most popular open-air jazz festivals last month as the sixth annual Leopolis Jazz Festival was in town. World-class jazz musicians from all over the world attract over 40,000 visitors each year to the festival’s three stages – in Rynok Square, in Potocky Palace Yard, and in the B. Khmelnytsky Park of Culture & Leisure. In addition to the concerts, many other fun events were held throughout the festival, like workshops, jam sessions, and autograph sessions with the famous musicians. Festivalgoers also enjoyed the Street Music by Leopolis Jazz Fest project, which saw bands and musicians of all styles performing on street platforms throughout the city. This year was headlined by acts like American jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, two-time American Grammy winner Marcus Miller, and the highly-regarded collaboration between Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin featuring Melvin Lee Davis and Wes Ritenour. Leopolitan music lovers and guests of the city were also impressed by Swedish bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson and his fantastic performance with the INSO-Lviv Symphony Orchestra. Jacob Collier, the 23-year-old multi-instrumentalist and internet star popular for his home videos, attracted huge attention to his performance. Jamie Cullum, author of the multiplatinum album Twentysomething, also charmed festivalgoers with his marvelous ability to combine musical genres like jazz, pop, and rock. The Leopolis Jazz Fest’s Eddy Rozner Jazz Music Award has become one of the most esteemed awards in jazz and has become an annual tradition since its introduction in 2012. Awarded to respected jazz musicians who have made a considerable contribution to the development and promotion of jazz throughout the world, this year’s recipient was none other than 87-year-old jazz legend Ahmad Jamal. The American jazz pianist is one of the most popular composers and arrangers in the world.

VIETNAM DAY IN LVIV

Lviv celebrated Vietnam Day on 21 June as part of Vietnamese Cultural Year activities in Ukraine. The event was sponsored by the Embassy of Vietnam, the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, the Vietnam-Ukraine Friendship Association, and local authorities. Organised in Lviv for the first time, the event saw Vietnamese people from across the region in the city to celebrate. There were plenty of activities, including a Vietnamese goods and cuisine fair, seminars on tourism cooperation, and a photo exhibition of Vietnam’s landscapes and people. One of the highlights was the concert featuring Vietnam’s traditional instruments performed by Vietnamese expats. Ambassador Nguyen Anh Tuan said the event was designed to introduce Vietnam to their Western Ukrainian friends to deepen the traditional Vietnam-Ukraine friendship. It also aimed to enhance the mutual understanding of people and businesses of the two countries and foster the connection of Vietnamese localities with Leopolitans and other Ukrainians.

Організаторами заходу виступили Посольство В'єтнаму, Міністерство культури, спорту й туризму В’єтнаму, Товариство в'єтнамсько-української дружби та місцева влада. Організована у Львові вперше, ця подія привабила в'єтнамців з усього регіону. У програмі було багато різноманітних заходів – виставка в'єтнамських товарів й традиційна в'єтнамська кухня, семінари з туристичного співробітництва та фотовиставка ландшафтів і народів В'єтнаму. Серед найцікавіших подій варто відмітити концерт традиційної В'єтнамської музики у виконанні в'єтнамських самодіяльних артистів. Посол В’єтнаму в Україні Нгуен Ань Туан на церемонії відкриття сказав, що цей захід був розроблений, щоб представити західноукраїнським друзям В'єтнам для поглиблення традиційної дружби між країнами. Він також покликаний покращити взаєморозуміння між людьми та сприяти встановленню зв'язків в'єтнамських міст з мешканцями Львова та інших українських міст.

LVIV CELEBRATES CANADA DAY Lviv’s Rynok Square and Italian Courtyard were overrun by maple leafclad Canadians for Canada Day festivities on 1 July. The event featured a delicious pancake breakfast served up by Canadian troops in Ukraine and members of the Canadian Embassy. There was a street hockey tournament on the square with teams from Canadian troops and police, Ukraine’s Invictus Games team, and Ukraine’s women’s hockey team. Canadian musicians even took over the Leopolis Jazz Festival stage on Rynok Square with performances by world-renowned artists like John Stetch, Jake Koffman, and Alex Goodman. Leopolitan Canada-lovers and guests of the city were drawn to the special Canada House exhibits, which included a maple-infused sugar shack, retail stands, a photo expo, documentary films, a book expo, educational promos, and a VR exhibit. Organized jointly by the Embassy of Canada in Ukraine and DikArt Creative Marketing Company the event was attended by Canadian Ambassador Roman Washchuk, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sami Jo Small, and Canadian Paralympic gold medalist Billy Bridges.

MISS LVIV 2018 Lvivâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s splendid Opera & Ballet Theatre hosted the grand finale of the Miss Lviv 2018 beauty pageant on 21 June. The glamorous event featured dazzling contestants in eye-catching swimsuits and gorgeous evening gowns. Hosted by Oleksandra Kucherenko and Timur Miroshnychenko, the programme was complimented by performances by popular Ukrainian artists like Tayanna, Melovin, Osadchuk, and Kazka. Fourteen talented Leopolitan ladies were selected from over 200 hopefuls to compete in the event. In the end, 23-year-old Nataliya Bolyukh was crowned Miss Lviv 2018, while Nataliya Overchuk and Sonya Hrytsak were named Vice Miss and Second Vice Miss, respectively. The lovely Bolyukh will now represent Lviv at the Miss Ukraine 2018 pageant in Kyiv later this year.

Hosted at the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky’s gardens, this 18th Century park was opened exclusively for guests of Leopolis Jazz Fest. The Ukrainian Haute Couture show dazzled guests with stunning one-of-a-kind outfits featuring intricate embroidery and richly textured appliques on uniquely cut blouses and dresses combined with dramatic make-up. The stunning models strutted down the catwalks showcasing Karavanska’s exquisite collection accompanied by the music of the INSO-Lviv Symphony Orchestra.

fter years of sending children with operable brain tumours more than 700 km away to Kyiv, the Lviv City Children’s Clinical Hospital has started performing life-saving pediatric neurosurgery in its own operating rooms. The capability eases the practical and financial burden of families by allowing children with brain tumours to receive treatment close to home. This is thanks to the Ukraine Pediatric Fellowship Program (UPFP) at Toronto, Canada’s Hospital for Sick Children (aka SickKids), itself a partnership between the Children of Chornobyl Canadian Fund and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.

Teams of SickKids doctors have come to Ukraine, and Lviv in particular, since 2013. Led by neurosurgeon Dr. James Rutka, the Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto and co-director of the Brain Tumour Research Centre at SickKids, and Dr. Myroslava Romach, a Medical Director and CCCF board member, these teams deliver lectures at conferences and provide clinical consultations on difficult cases. Many of the lectures are telecast across multiple regions to ensure they reach as many doctors

as possible. Dr. Rutka also operates at Lviv City Children’s Hospital using equipment provided by the Temerty Foundation, including a high-speed drill, microscope, and loupes, allowing procedures that were not possible before. Because of their repeated visits to Ukraine, the SickKids UPFP teams have been able to identify other opportunities for knowledge sharing, as the program has expanded its focus to include urology, cystic fibrosis, and perinatal maternal mental health care. Almost a dozen Ukrainian doctors have gone to SickKids as UPFP fellows since 2013. While there, they were able to observe how practitioners such as neurosurgeons, neurologists, oncologists, and radiologists work closely together, while also learning valuable minimally invasive techniques for removing brain tumours. After attending SickKids and working with Dr. Rutka, these Ukrainian doctors now have the confidence and knowledge to perform better operations today.

ісля того, як декілька років дітей з оперативними пухлинами головного мозку відправляли зі Львова до Києва, Львівська міська дитяча клінічна лікарня почала проводити нейрохірургічні операції дітям у своїх операційних. Така можливість полегшує практичний та фінансовий тягар сімей, дозволяючи дітям з пухлинами головного мозку отримувати лікування недалеко від дому. Це відбувається завдяки програмі української педіатричної стипендії (UPFP) у канадській лікарні для дітей у Торонто (так звана SickKids), яка сама є партнером канадського фонду "Діти Чорнобиля" та Українського канадського конгресу. Колективи канадських лікарів приїздять до України та Львова зокрема з 2013 року. На чолі з нейрохірургом доктором Джеймсом Рутка, завідувачем кафедри хірургії Торонтського університету та співдиректором Центру досліджень пухлин головного мозку SickKids, і доктором Мирославою Ромач, медичним директором і членом правління CCCF, ця команда проводить лекції на конференціях та клінічні консультації у складних випадках. Багато лекцій проводяться за допомогою

телемостів у кількох регіонах, щоб забезпечити їх доступність для якнайбільшої кількості лікарів. Доктор Рутка також працює у Львівській міській дитячій лікарні з використанням обладнання, наданого Фондом Темерті, у тому числі високошвидкісним дрилем, мікроскопом та лупами, які дозволяють проводити процедури, які раніше не були можливими. Завдяки частим візитам до України команди UPFP SickKids змогли визначити інші можливості для обміну знаннями, оскільки програма розширила свою програму питаннями урології, муковісцидозу та перинатальної материнської психіатричної допомоги. Починаючи з 2013 р. майже двадцять українських лікарів побували у лікарні SickKids в якості стипендіатів UPFP. Там вони могли спостерігати, як нейрохірурги, невропатологи, онкологи та радіологи працюють в тісному співробітництві, а також вивчають сучасні мінімально-інвазивні методи видалення пухлин головного мозку. Після відвідин SickKids та роботи з доктором Рутка ці українські лікарі сьогодні мають впевненість і знання, щоб виконувати кращі операції вже сьогодні. LVIV TODAY | Summer 2018

Rotary Saving Children's Lives in Lviv On 26 June 2018 Lviv International Rotary club held Global Grant Donation Ceremony of diagnostic system Vivid IQ to the children’s hospital “Ohmatdyt” within the framework of the charity project “Save children’s lives”. Project was initiated by Andriana Malska, Assistant Professor of Department of propaedeutic of pediatrics and medical genetics of Lviv national medical university of Danylo Halytskyy. It is another great example of cooperation between the department and the hospital. Project lasted over 2 years. Rotary clubs all over the world teamed up to help save lives of newborns in Lviv by donating for modern equipment that helps diagnose congenital heart defects, including critical ones that have to be operated during the first days of child’s life. According to the regional children’s cardiologist Dr. Olga Kuryliak every year in Lviv region are born approx. 30 000 children and 250-280 of them have congenital heart defects. This device is extremely needed. Until now diagnosis has been conducted by a device without Doppler without which it is impossible to observe blood flow. The device will be used in neonatal intensive care, where all children from Lviv region with suspicion of congenital heart defect are referred. Even on the day of donation 3 kids with critical heart defects were born. They were diagnosed with new device and the same day they were referred to specialised center in Kyiv for surgery. The project was initiated under the presidency of Lars Vestbjerg with active support from James Joeriman, Paul Vanderhoven and his wife Oksana Boboshko-Vanderhoeven, who organized charity concert by inviting famous opera singer Oksana Krovytska and fundraised $12 000. Project was completed under direction of current president Dmytro Symovonyk. It is also important to mention about the support and involvement in fundraising of parents who faced the problem of congenital heart defects themselves. They also received Paul Harris award – highest Rotary recognition. The ceremony was attended by Lviv philanthropists, in particular by president of Lviv International Rotary club Dmytro Symovonyk, President of Danish Business Association Lars Vestbjerg, who presented the Paul Harris awards of Rotary International Foundation.

Ротарі-клуби по всьому світу об'єдналися, щоб допомогти рятувати життя новонароджених у Львові, пожертвувавши кошти на сучасне медичне обладнання, за допомогою якого можна діагностувати складні вроджені вади серця, зокрема критичні, які необхідно оперувати протягом перших днів життя дитини.

Зі слів обласного дитячого кардіолога – Куриляк Ольги Борисівни щороку у Львівській області народжується близько 30 000 дітей і близько 250–280 із них мають вроджені вади серця. Цей апарат є надзвичайно потрібним, до цього діагностика проводилась апаратом без допплера, без якого неможливо оцінити кровоплин. Апарат буде використовуватись на базі реанімації новонароджених, куди скеровуються усі діти із Львівської області із підозрою на вроджену ваду серця. Навіть у день, коли було подаровано апарат народилося 3 дитини із критичними вадами серця, які були діагностовані вже новим апаратом і які вже вночі були скеровані на хірургічне лікування в спеціалізований центр у місті Києві.  Проект було розпочато за президенства датчанина Ларса Вєстберга, за активної підтримки James Joeriman, Paul Vandеrhoven та його дружини Оксани Бобошко-Вандерговен, які організували благочинний концерт запросивши оперну співачку п. Оксану Кровицьку, яка безкоштовно заспівала у філармонії і на якому було зібрано 12000 доларів. Проект було завершено під керівництвом теперішнього президента Дмитра Симовоника.  Важливо зазначити, що до збору коштів також долучились і батьки, які у свій час самі стикнулись із проблемою вродженої вади серця у власної дитини і також отримали нагороду Пола Гаррісона – найвижчу ротарійську нагороду.  У церемонії взяли участь львівські достойники, зокрема, президент Львівського Ротарі-клубу Дмитро Симовоник та президент Датської бізнес-асоціації Ларс Вестб'єрг, який вручив нагороди Пола Харріса від Фонду Ротарі Інтернешнал.

EBA EXPERT TALKS LEGAL CURE FOR INVESTMENT PROBLEMS: A SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE RECENT LEGISL ATION AMENDMENTS. authorities. Unfortunately, we have to admit that perception of Ukraine by the potential investors usually is based not exactly on the accurate data. Therefore, we would like to outline and summarize some of the most significant recent legislative amendments which positively influence doing business in Ukraine. 1. CHANGE OF THE CORPORATE LEGISLATION

It has been said a lot about the investment prospective of Ukraine lately, and Western Ukraine in particular. Lviv, as an economical hub of Western Ukraine, attracts potential investors by its location, availability of resources and highly educated employees. Ukrainian economy is growing and legal regulations are constantly being improved, however, apparently, not fast enough to resist existing geopolitical challenges and to boost a new investment wave. The reason for this, among other, is a necessity for legislative amendments aimed on securing the investments and formation of a transparent business environment in Ukraine. Nevertheless, a large number of existing problems have already received rapid and radical “legal cure” and are either solved or at least in the process of their elimination. As lawyers supporting foreign clients, we follow and welcome new legislative amendments aimed on investment support. Majority of our clients have already experienced these positive changes, as well as a highly transparent and pro-investment approach of the local

On June 17 2018, new and long awaited Law of Ukraine "On Limited and Additional Liability Companies" (the Law On LLC) entered into legal force. It provides the shareholders of LLC with wide flexibility in the corporate governance and increases control over the companies’ local management by the owners. Additionally, named Law reduces the list of grounds of exclusion of the shareholder from the company, which previously was very wide and unclear and could lead to unreasonable exclusion of the shareholder owning the share of less than 40% (in some cases even less than 50%). One of the most significant amendments was introduced a little earlier, on 23 March 20171 and was also reflected in the Law On LLC – possibility to conclude the shareholders agreement. Shareholders agreements allow not only setting up the rights and obligations of the shareholders, depending on their agreed role in business, but also to decrease possible corporate conflicts or at least provide the means of solving so-called “deadlocks”. Impossibility to conclude the shareholders agreements in Ukraine, was among the reasons (certainly, not the most crucial one) of structuring a joint business abroad, where such agreements are widely spread practice. 2. LIBERALIZATION OF A CURRENCY CONTROL Companies involved in the international trade and cross boarder deals are well aware

about a very strict currency control regulations, which were introduced in 2013–2014 and in majority continued for almost 4 years. However, year by year imposed currency control restrictions were slowly eliminated. Finally, 2017 was a year of currency control liberalization and this positive approach also continues in 2018. Thus, the obligatory sell of foreign currency was decreased from 65 % to 50 %, and certain operations, such as direct investment in the form of contribution to the charter capital are not subject to obligatory sell. Moreover, Resolution No. 192 of the National Bank of Ukraine (hereinafter – the NBU) adopted in March 2018 introduced possibility to pay the dividends in foreign currency (up to USD 7 million per month) irrespective of the period for which these dividends were accrued. Still, the biggest progress of 2018 so far in the sphere of currency control became the Law "On Currency" adopted by the Parliament on 21 June 2018, which shall enter into force after it is signed by the President and officially published and will fully applied within 7 month since then. The Law shall decrease a control over the foreign trade, credits and investment, and will provide a clear and stable legal framework of currency regulation. 3. JUDICIAL AND ENFORCEMENT REFORMS One of the most significant reforms aimed on adherence of the rule of law and assurance of the actual legal protection of business is the Judicial reform. In the course of this reform the structure of the court system was changed and procedural legislation was amended, but what is most important, it allowed to increase the transparency of the court process and to elect the well-recognized legal experts as judges of the Higher Court (a newly formed higher court institution).

The next and much awaited step, broadly highlighted in the media as a key condition for the IMF financial aid, is formation of a new Anticorruption Court 2. Together with National Anti-corruption Bureau and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office it shall serve as a reliable institution for diminishing corruption on the very top levels. In 2016 existing low effective enforcement system was turned on 180 degrees and restarted by adopting new laws introducing the private enforcement officers (bailiffs). So far new enforcement officers have already proved their efficiency and ability to execute the courts decisions without delay. 4. ANTI-RAIDING LEGISLATION On 2 November 2016, another important law came into force which was aimed on preventing of hostile takeover of the property and business (the Law On Anti-raiding) 3. In particular, the law returns previously cancelled notarization of the signatures on the shareholders decisions and Charters subject to the state registration, increases control of the owners over their real estate and corporate rights registered in the state registers 4, significantly strengthens the criminal liability for unlawful registration action.

*** Among other positive changes are: amendment of antitrust legislation by increasing financial thresholds for reporting merger to the Antimonopoly committee of Ukraine and obtaining merger clearance; continued moratorium for inspections of business by certain authorities; possibility to obtain the residency permits by the foreigners – UBO5 of Ukrainian companies and extension the validity period of work permits from 1 year to 3 years for certain foreign employees, general simplification of these processes; improvement of the protection of the business during the searches and dawn raids by requirement of video-recording of the whole process and provision of the exhaustive list of grounds to detach computers and other data processing devices.

EBA EVENTS SECURITY MATTERS: FIRST AID We cannot remain indifferent when someone needs medical help! However, sometimes we are passing by due to fear of making mistakes and lack of knowledge. On June 12 the experts of CAB, Vasyl Kashuba and Mykhailo Dumnych, refuted the most common myths on how to react in the life-and-death situations. The experts explained the appropriate action plan when providing first aid during unconsciousness, heart attacks, strangles, fractures, convulsions and in general focused on legal, physical and biological aspects of protecting a person who needs medical help. This knowledge could save lives and the “must know” for everyone! Also we are grateful to INGO Ukraine, DRUZI Café Lviv, CAB for supporting the EBA Security Matters initiative! Vasul Kashuba, Instructor and Head of First Aid Courses CAB, advised the following: 1. Remember that personal safety is a top priority and then first aid. 2. Always have a medical gloves with you. 3. Please leave unconscious person with a stable breathing in the recovery position until he/she will return to consciousness. When a person is unconscious and not breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation should be performed. 4. In case of seizures (epileptic seizure), the main thing is to protect person’s head. You do not need to open the mouth of the person and put things into the mouth, for example, a spoon – it will only worsen the situation. 5. In case of a stroke and a heart attack you need to act quickly and call an ambulance as soon as possible.

Also, to ensure due protection of the investors rights and business in Ukraine there are several special state and advisory institutions, such as Business Ombudsmen Council, Office of the National Investment Council of Ukraine ,Government Commission of business protection Interdepartmental Commission on investors protection against illegal takeovers under the Ministry of Justice, local department in each regional state administration. To summarize everything stated above, the reforms are being actually implemented and Ukraine becomes more and more investment friendly environment. Of course, it takes some time to actually experience the changes and not everything is perfect, but we strongly believe that Ukraine is moving towards the right direction. We are very optimistic in future prospective, and it seems that the approach of Ukrainian government and local authorities have never been as pro-investment as it is now. Therefore, we are looking forward to see even more rapid legal development supporting foreign investment. 1

Also, please advise if VAT applies to supply of software programs and corresponding services rendered on the territory of Ukraine. Kind regards, Alexandra. Dear Alexandra, Under Ukrainian tax legislation supply of goods and services on the territory of Ukraine are normally subject to VAT, however with certain peculiarities and exemptions. Nevertheless, export of the goods is taxable with 0% VAT rate unless a specific operation is a subject to VAT exemption. Supply of the services to the non-resident is VAT taxable if services are rendered in Ukraine, but for the certain types of services the Tax code provides a specific approach. Regarding supply of the software products Until 01 January 2023 supply of software products is a subject to the preferential tax treatment and such operations are VAT exempt. This approach applies to supply of the software products on the territory of Ukraine as well as to the operations on export of software products. Also, starting from 2018, the VAT exemption is applicable not only to supply of the software products, but also to other transactions with software products if such payments are not determined as the royalty. There is a special definition of the “software products”, which was extended in 2018 and according to the Tax code such are: • results of programming in the form of operation system or computer program (its components), web- sites, online services and access to such; • copies of computer programs or parts of such in material or electronic form, also codes or links for downloading such; • updates, changes, applications, extensions of the computer programs and rights to receive such within a specified period; • cryptographic information security tools. However, the law also does not clearly define how to distinguish price of software on already installed computer or other device from the total sum of the goods, as well as correct qualification of whether certain result of commercial activity is a software product or a service. VAT applies to the services that are provided on the territory of Ukraine and as a general rule the place of the supplier’s registration is defined as a place where the services are rendered. However, there are several exemptions of this rule, namely the place of rendering services is determined as the place of the client’s registration in case of provision of the services of software developing and testing services, data processing services, creation of the objects of the IP rights with sale of such IR rights, consulting and engineering services. Therefore, provision of the services which are normally called as the “IT services” (consulting, engineering, design of the software products, testing) by Ukrainian contractors to non-residents is not taxed by VAT. However, rendering such services in Ukraine in some cases would be treated as VAT taxable operations and therefore – subject to VAT. There are also several exemptions of this rule and each operation has to be verified on case to case basis. As an example, if in the process of rendering of particular service previously supplied and installed software program is modified such operations are free of VAT, if not – VAT applies on a general basis. 2011–2017

UKRAINIAN CUISINE? Imagine that you are presenting national dishes abroad. What dish would you prepare then? Varenyky, salo, and borsch are the first dishes that come to mind. And what about turtle in aspic, a daily dish in Kolomyia back in 1929? Everything new is a long-forgotten past. I fully realized this, when I started exploring Ukrainian cuisine. The trends of modern restaurant business were cooked in ordinary Ukrainian families of the 19th and 20th centuries. Then why do institutions that specialize in national cuisine try to impress us with pampushkas? Even before the USSR, Ukrainian recipes more resembled French or Italian cuisine. Fried oysters, turtle mix, eel, tenderloin with Madeira and truffle. After the October Revolution, oysters and home parmesan were replaced by shkvarky with potatoes. It's about time to revive Ukrainian culinary exquisiteness. A recipe for fried oysters from Olha Franko for housewives from 1929. Gently remove oysters from shells, boil them in wine, add salt and pepper. Add lemon juice and leave them to dry. Dip them in dough and then fry. Serve with lemon and green parsley. Let's discover new facets of Ukrainian cuisine together!

American football: Western division American football returned to Lviv’s Yunist Stadium on July 8th, as our local Levy squad played host to match against Kyiv’s Stallions within Western division of Ukrainian Top League of American Football ULAF championship. The local team “Levy” made their triumph as expected, and team’s more experienced players defeated Kyiv’s players with a score of 46:6. In 2018, in the Championship are competing following teams: Kharkiv’s Atlantes, Kyiv’s Stallions, Mariupol’s Azov Dolphins, Lviv’s Levy, Mykolaiv’s Vikings, Kyiv’s Patriots, Dnipro’s Rockets, Kyiv’s Slavs, Odesa’s Storm, Dnipro’s Spartans and Hawks from Bila Tserkva. The next match for local team “Levy” will be on August 4th, against Kyiv’s Patriots.

Lviv's best Athlete of the Month: Khrystyna Pohranychna Lviv’s junior gymnast Khrystyna Pohranychna was named Lviv’s Athlete of the Month for May. The 15-year-old won gold medals in the ribbon and allaround events at the World Gymnasiade in Morocco in May. Earlier this year, Khrystyna qualified to compete in rhythmic gymnastics at October’s Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Congratulations Khrystyna and good luck in Argentina!

Львівська молода гімнастка Христина Погранична була визнана львівською спортсменкою місяця травня. Canoe: Leopolitan Canoers Win 4 Medals Eight athletes from Lviv were among over 700 canoers from 33 countries to take part in the European Junior Canoe Sprint Championships in Italy last month. The Ukrainian team took home four titles and 10 medals, including four medals for Leopolitan canoers. Dmytro Ozymok won two gold medals – in the men’s C1 200m event and as part of Ukraine’s junior C4 crew in the 500m race. Taras Mazovskyiji won a silver in the men’s C2M under-23 500m event alongside Denys Filatov, while Yuriy Zub won bronze in the men’s K1M junior 200m sprint. Congratulations to the athletes!

Aquabike: Ukrainian Championships The first stage of the Ukrainian Aquabike Championship was held at Shklo Lake on 22–24 June. Aquabike is one of the fastest, most spectacular, demanding, and entertaining sports on water. The edge-of-your-seat racing delivers improbable feats of artistry and insane aerial acrobatics. As the most prestigious personal watercraft racing series in the country, the event attracted Ukraine’s top riders to compete in several divisions. Each race combines speed, skill, and sheer raw power to produce adrenaline-fueled, non-stop action. Kyiv skiers were among the best on the weekend, with Danylo Bilyi winning the Open division title and Bohdan Sukhetskyi claiming the Master division crown. Congratulations to all participants and winners!

Аквабайк: Чемпіонат України Перший етап Чемпіонату України з аквабайків відбувся 22–24 червня на озері в с. Шкло. Аквабайк – це одна з водно-моторних екстремальних дисципліню Суть цього виду спорту полягає в гонках на гідроциклахб які мають з двигун понад 400 кінських сил, загальмувати яким дуже важко. Змагаються на аквабайках у різних категоріях, тут і кільцеві перегони, і слалом і фрістайл. На озері у Шкло виступали найкращі майстри України в кількох дивізіонах. Тут були і видовищні розвороти і боротьба на прямих, феєрія швидкості та спіненої води, спортивного азарту й волі до перемоги. Кияни були серед найкращих: Данило Білий переміг у Відкритому дивізіоні а Богдан Сухецький здобув у нелегкій боротьбі титул чемпіона дивізіону майстрів. Вітаємо всіх учасників та переможців!

Каное: Львівські гребці здобули 4 медалі В італійському містечку Ауронцо ді Кадоре 28 червня – 1 липня пройшли змагання юніорів ECA та Чемпіонату Європи U23 Canoe Sprint. На цих змаганнях, в яких взяли участь понад 700 спортсменів з 33 європейських країн, Україна здобула десять медалей, з яких чотири – золоті. До складу національної збірної увійшли також вісім спортсменів зі Львівщини, які зробили свій внесок – 4 медалі. Так Дмитро Озимок здобув 2 золоті медалі серед чоловіків у категорії C1 на дистанції 200 метрів і в складі екіпажу молодіжної команди України в категорії C4 на дистанції – 500 метрів; екіпаж Тарас Мазовський – Денис Філатов здобули срібну медаль у категорії C2M U23 на дистанції 500 м, а Юрій Зуб виборов бронзову медаль у категорії K1M Junior на дистанції 200 м. Olympic Day in Lviv Leopolitan athletes and guests of the city celebrated Olympic Day – a celebration of the Olympic Movement and the joy of sport – in front of Lviv’s picturesque Opera & Ballet Theatre on 23 June. Dating back to 1948, the event was initiated by the IOC to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on 23 June 1894. While the first Olympic Games weren’t held until two years later in Athens, Greece, it was that date when 12 countries unanimously approved Baron Pierre de Coubertin’s proposal to revive the ancient Olympics. This year’s festive event aimed to promote fitness, culture and education, while also observing the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect. Legendary Ukrainian pole vaulter and President of the Ukrainian NOC Serhiy Bubka – as well as many of the region’s most accomplished athletes – were on hand to greet participants who took part in events like artistic gymnastics, basketball, boxing, football, and judo.
