ou’ve picked a great time to be in Ukraine. The days are getting longer. Flowers are about to bloom. And it is the season of love. You’ve also picked the perfect place to visit in Lviv – Ukraine’s ‘City of Love’. SEE THE LOVE There’s a reason why Lviv is known as Ukraine’s City of Love – there is no shortage of romantic nooks throughout the lovely city. Perhaps none is as lovely as the Venice (Korniakt) Palace in Rynok Square. Once owned by Polish king Jan Sobieski, this Renaissance palazzo will send you back to the days of Romeo and Juliet and if you’re lucky, you might even get to see the play about the star-crossed lovers on site. ARTISTIC GLASSWARE ON DISPLAY 05 March – 01 April at the Glass Museum (2 Rynok Square) Ningbo Glass Museum and Glass Museum in Lviv are encouraging Leopolitans and creative guests of the city to take a part in Andriy Bokotey Award for young glass artists. This award was initiated by Wuxi "Greenway" Art Gallery in China. Bokotey is a graduate of the ceramics department at the Lviv State Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts (now the Lviv National Academy of Arts). He chaired the Art Glass Department (1994-96), was a professor and vice-rector (1996-00), and was the Academy’s Rector (2000-15). The founder and organiser of ten International Blown Glass Symposiums in Lviv, he also founded the city’s wonderful Glass Museum. A National Artist of Ukraine since 2007 and a member of the National Academy of Arts since 2001, his works have been exhibited in galleries all around the world. In short, he is one of Ukraine’s great modern artists. First Prize winner will receive the opportunity to take a part in the Ningbo International Glass Art Conference, China (organizers will cover the expenses for travel, accommodation and food in China). II and III prize winners will receive UAH 20000- and 10000 accordingly. All three winner's works will enrich the collection of Ningbo Glass Museum. Entries by Ukrainian artists and students up to 35 years are welcome to enter the competition till February 25. During March 05 – April 01 Lviv’s lovely Glass Museum will host an exhibition of the best entries of artistic glassware for the Andriy Bokotey Award. ВИСТАВКА ХУДОЖНЬОГО СКЛА 5 березня – 1 квітня в Музеї скла (пл. Ринок, 2) Музей скла з китайського міста Нінбо та Музей скла у Львові запрошують львів’ян та гостей міста відвідати виставку лауреатів премії Андрія Бокотея для молодих майстрів художнього скла. Цю премію ініціювала художня галерея провінції У Сі "Greenway". А. Бокотей – випускник кафедри кераміки Львівського державного інституту декоративно-прикладного мистецтва (нині Львівська національна академія мистецтв). Він очолював відділ художнього скла (1994-96), був професором і проректором (1996-2000), а також ректором Академії (2000-15). Засновник і організатор десяти міжнародних симпозіумів гутного скла у Львові, він також заснував чудовий міський музей скла. Народний художник України з 2007 року і член Національної академії мистецтв з 2001 року, він є одним з найвидатніших митців України. Його роботи експонуються в галереях по всьому світу. Лауреат першої премії отримує можливість взяти участь у Міжнародній конференції художнього скла у китайському місті Нінбо (організатори покриють витрати на проїзд, проживання та харчування в Китаї). Лауреати II і III нагород отримають 20 000 та 10 000 грн. відповідно. Всі три твори переможців збагатять колекцію Музею скла Нінбо. Запрошуються українські художники та студенти віком до 35 років. Термін подачі заявок – до 25 лютого. У період з 5 березня по 1 квітня у Львові відбудеться виставка найкращих творів художнього скла на здобуття премії Андрія Бокотея. SMOOTH JAZZ BY KEIKO MATSUI 11 March at 19:00 at the M. Zankovetska Drama Theatre (1 L. Ukrainka St.) With a career spanning over three decades, Japanese pianist Keiko Matsui is a citizen of the world, touring the planet relentlessly to bring her music to virtually every corner of the globe. With over 1.2 million albums sold in the USA alone, she is one of the most recognised artists in the world of jazz. Her sound is best described as a mix of Western and Oriental musical influences and she takes pride in crafting music that universally connects people on a spiritual level. Her music transcends boundaries with a unique melting pot of influences that has earned her a devout following. At home in many genres, Keiko borrows seamlessly from such diverse styles as jazz, rock, blues, classical, and traditional. ALESSANDRO SAFINA IN CONCERT 11 March at 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Italian tenor Alessandro Safina rose to fame by combining his opera roots with modern-day pop music to create a striking, hardto-categorise style. Safina became interested in opera at an early age and sang as a child in productions across Europe, like Puccini’s La Boheme and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. It wasn’t until his late teens that Safina became interested in pop and rock music. Inspired by groups like Genesis, the Clash, Simple Minds, and U2, he began to fuse the styles together shortly thereafter. Leopolitan music fans and guests of the city won’t want to miss his mesmerising live performance at Lviv’s picturesque Opera & Ballet Theatre on 11 March. Tickets range in price from 500–2600 UAH. ALYOSHA IN LVIV 6 March at 20:00 at the Malevich Night Club & Concert Arena (2 Chornovola Ave.) Alyosha (Olena Kucher) – one of Ukraine’s most famous singers and songwriters – will play at Lviv’s hopping Malevich Night Club on 6 March. The winner of many prestigious awards, including the YUNA, Golden Gramophone Ukraine, Viva!, and Song of the Year, the talented songstress will present her new ‘Poruch’ (Near) tour at the concert. After graduating from the National University of Culture and Arts in Kyiv, she signed with Catapult Music in 2008 and released her first Englishlanguage album in 2010. That year she came to the attention of an international audience after representing Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo, Norway. She performed her hit ‘Sweet People’, a dark and gloomy social commentary on the state of the modern world and environment (that was inspired by the Chornobyl disaster), where she finished in 10th place. FRENCH CINEMA FESTIVAL From 28 February at Planeta Kino Cinema in Forum Lviv (7A Pid Dubom St.) From 28 February, Leopolitan cinema lovers and guests of the city will be able to enjoy some of France’s finest films of 2018 at the French Cinema Festival. Screenings include the romantic comedy ‘Gaspard va au marriage’ (Gaspard at the Wedding), the drama ‘Amanda’, the comedy ‘L’homme fidèle’ (A Faithful Man), the crime comedy ‘En Liberte!’ (The Trouble with You), and the historical drama ‘Un people et son roi’ (One Nation, One King). All films will be shown in French with Ukrainian subtitles. ROMANTIC ICE SKATING WITH RAFAELLO 14 February – 20 March at B. Khmelnytsky Park of Culture & Leisure (Vytovskoho St.) Perfect for a romantic date, family weekend, or spending time with your friends, skating is a universal winter entertainment – and Lviv has plenty of places to enjoy it! This year, in addition to traditional options like the central rink on Rynok Square, the Medyk ice rink (24 Horbachevskoho St.), the Fortress skating rink at Europe mall (36 Schyretska St.), and the family skating rink at King Cross Leopolis shopping centre (30 Stryiska St.), there is another place in a premiere location. The Ferrero Ukraine company, producer of Raffaello candies, has set up a rink in the middle of the B. Khmelnytsky Culture & Leisure Park. The circular rink is branded in the red and white colours and logos of Raffaello, alongside various winter and romantic adornments, to create a fairy tale-like atmosphere of an icy lake hidden within the thick of trees. The rink offers skates in the sizes of 25–47 and doesn’t allow visitors to use their own skates. Skating is free, although you’ll have to leave an ID or deposit in order to use the skates. Even more, there are plenty of photo zones for those that enjoy their selfies and lots of places to enjoy a warm drink right by the ice. NATIONAL MOGULS CHAMPIONSHIP 20–24 February at Slope 1B at Bukovel Ski Resort (Ivano-Frankivsk Region) As Ukraine’s biggest and most popular ski resort, it’s no surprise that Bukovel Ski Resort will host the National Moguls Championships from 20–24 February. The term ‘mogul’ comes from the German word ‘mugel’, meaning ‘mound’. They are a series of bumps on a piste formed either naturally, from skiers following similar paths down the mountain, or artificially, which are generally used in competitions. The sport of moguls is a freestyle skiing event consisting of one timed run down a steep, heavily-moguled course that stresses technical turns, aerial manoeuvres, and speed. Mogul skiers compete in the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships and the Winter Olympic Games. Bukovel will prepare a special, Olympic-standard course for the National Championships that will feature two ‘trampolines’ (jumps where athletes perform aerial manoeuvres). Parallel moguls, an event added to the championship program just last year, will be featured at the National Championships for the first time. У "Буковелі" буде підготована траса спеціального олімпійського стандарту, на якій будуть встановлені два трампліни, на яких спортсмени зможуть виконувати різні трюки в повітрі. ST. PATRICK’S DAY IN LVIV! 17 March from 18:00 at numerous pubs and restaurants around the city St. Patrick has long been considered the patron saint of Ireland and that’s why the country throws its biggest party in honour of him. On St. Patrick’s Day, you’ll see parades, festivals, festive masses in churches, and – in perhaps the most Irish way possible – the coming together for a bottle of beer with friends at the pub. The world has adopted St. Patrick’s Day as a celebration of everything Irish, and while this tradition is relatively new in Ukraine – Ukrainians have embraced it as another reason to have fun, listen to good music, and drink beer! This year, why not dress up in green and head over to one of Lviv’s many pubs and brew houses to drink some beer and learn some Irish dances? инулий рік був великим роком для українського кіно. Державне агентство з питань кінематографії України витратило майже 17 мільйонів доларів на виробництво вітчизняних фільмів, а українські любителі кіно зможуть оцінити їх, коли ті вийдуть у прокат. Зокрема, це музична комедія "Гуцулка Ксеня" за мотивами оперети Ярослава Барнича. Ця стрічка, режисером якої стала львів'янка Олена Дем'яненко, розповідає про молодого американського українця Яро, який подорожує Карпатами у 30-х роках минулого століття в пошуках "справжньої української дівчини", щоб одружитись з нею. Покійний батько був дуже стурбований тим, що Яро не повністю розуміє своє коріння, і призначив термін для одруження протягом року після своєї смерті. Якщо тому це не вдасться, спадщина перейде до його далекої родички Марії, яка разом зі своєю матір'ю також їде до Карпат, щоб запобігти одруженню Яро. HUTSULKA KSENYA

ast year was a big year for Ukrainian film. Ukraine’s State Film Agency spent nearly $17 million USD on producing homegrown films and Ukrainian cinema lovers are set to reap the benefits this year, when many of the productions are released. Take, for example, Hutsulka Ksenya – the musical comedy based on Yaroslav Barnych’s operetta. Directed by Lviv’s own Olena Demyanenko, the film tells the story of Yaro, a young Ukrainian-American man that travels to pre-WWII Carpathian Mountains in search for a “true Ukrainian girl” to marry to satisfy the wishes of his late father. His father, concerned that Yaro didn’t fully understand his roots, left him a fortune on the condition that he marry that “true Ukrainian girl” within a year of his death. If he doesn’t succeed, the fortune transfers to his distant relative Mary who, along with her mother, travels to the Carpathians to prevent Yaro from marrying. Add in a bunch of strong, fun-loving women at his hotel, a dose of an eccentric professor and, of course, the Hutsulka Ksenya, and hijinks ensue. Will Yaro fall in love in time? Will he honour his father’s wish and learn about his roots? Set for release on 7 March, the film stars Varvara Lushchyk, Maksym Lozynskyi, Ihor Ciszshkewycz, and Oleh Stefan and sees freaky cabaret performances by the inimitable Dakh Daughters. Вже 10 років поспіль "Медичний центр фізичної терапії та медицини болю "Інново" сприяє покращенню якості життя людини та її фізичного стану та є лідером у дитячій реабілітації в Україні. В центрі працює два відділення – доросле та дитяче. Головний фізичний терапевт дитячого відділення Захар Козій знайшов вільний час та розповів Lviv Today детальніше про роботу центру.

Захаре, як почалась твоя кар’єра, як терапевта? Моє професійне становлення розпочалось у центрі "Джерело", де я пропрацював 3 роки. Саме там я зрозумів, що робота з людьми – це моє. У всіх фізичних терапевтів, що навчаються є непереборне бажання зарадити всім хворим: поставити на ноги після інсульту, вилікувати після перенесених травм, але насправді мало бажаючих працювати з дітьми. У "Джерелі" я відчув, що з дітьми мені дуже просто, вони щирі, справжні, і я знайшов спосіб взаємодії з ними, відчув контакт, і це стало для мене опорою в майбутній праці. У центрі я працював з дітьми

у побуті – одягання, туалет, гра, але мені бракувало власне фізичної реабілітації, я відчув, що вигораю і прагнув змін. І вони не забарились! Мені запропонували працю у щойно створеному реабілітаційному центрі "Інново". Спочатку було лячно – серед працівників багато студентів – всі питали у мене поради, адже я вже мав певний досвід, та знав я далеко не все. Саме тут, в "Інново" я навчився багатьом речам – спілкування з батьками, консультації та співпраця з лікарями. Я відчув, що мені вдається, я отримую результат, мною задоволені. Це дало мені неймовірну наснагу! Все, про що я тільки мріяв 5 років тому в професійному плані – стало реальністю! А формула успіху проста – "Інново" – це велика команда однодумців, людей, що мають спільну мету і роблять усе, щоб її досягнути. Якими якостями повинен володіти фізичний терапевт? Попри професійні навики обов’язковою умовою для роботи фізичного терапевта є любов до людей, вміння слухати, розуміти, взаємодіяти. Не всім це вдається – протягом роботи центру "Інново" багато людей не пройшли випробування, адже робота складна й специфічна. Але

хтось повинен її виконувати! Тому дуже важливо знайти себе в професії, бути на своєму місці, тоді працювати легко. Які методики фізичної реабілітації використовують в "Інново"? Насправді, не потрібно нічого вигадувати, існують світові практики реабілітації. Потрібно навчитись користуватись ними й отримувати позитивний результат. Робота терапевта "Інново" базується на доказовій медицині, що десятиліттями перевіряє ті чи інші методи роботи та їх ефективність. Звісно методики постійно зазнають змін – ми також змінюємось, вчимося і шукаємо нові способи, щоб отримати найкращий результат для пацієнта. В "Інново" робота з дітьми проходить у формі гри. Адже всі діти люблять бавитись, це є природнім для них. І саме під час гри терапевт може зробити дуже багато речей, що і є терапією, хоча зовні виглядають наче невинна гра чи розвага. Саме під час гри ми тренуємо функції та фізичні якості дитини: вчимо тримати голову, перевертатись, ходити, стрибати, бігати. Наше завдання – зробити дитину максимально соціалізованою та самозарадною. Є й дуже важкі діти – які залежні від тих, хто LVIV TODAY | February 2019

COVER STORY поруч, тоді йде мова про те, щоб навчити сім’ю (середовище дитини) компетентному догляду за нею і знову ж таки грі, адже дитина не завжди може заявити про свої бажання. Чи залежить результат реабілітації від віку дитини? Швидке виявлення і втручання в проблему дає кращий прогноз в подальшому. Важливим є залучити одразу всіх – невролога, психолога, педіатра, логопеда, фізичного терапевта, і всією командою займатись дитиною, сім’єю. Зараз спостерігається тенденція – більше звертаються сім’ї з дітьми 1,5 – 2 рочки, а ще кілька років тому це були в основному діти з 4 – ох, 5-ти років й старше. Це свідчить про довіру батьків до нашого центру, адже дитина – це найдорожче у світі. Як фахівці ми раді цьому, адже наші спеціалісти можуть першими втрутитись у проблему і дати все, що вони мають та вміють. На сьогодні існує чимало реабілітаційних центрів, у чому особливість "Інново"? В Україні працюють різні реабілітаційні центри. Але наразі саме "Інново" надає найкращу фізичну реабілітацію. Ми не конкуруємо, наприклад, з центром "Джерело", адже це місце перебування та навчання дітей з особливими потребами. Центри такого типу потрібні не лише для кожного міста, але й району. Ми виконуємо вужчу ділянку реабілітації – фізичну, і дійсно досягнули успіху у цьому. Зараз в "Інново" 4 команди фізичних терапевтів, з дитиною працюють кілька людей одночасно, бо це дає більш ефективний результат, робить гру (працю) цікавішою та безтурботною. Наша команда "Інново" постійно розвивається, на сьогодні у штаті центру працює психолог, соціальний педагог, зараз шукаємо логопеда. А починалось все тільки з терапії. Завдяки керівництву центру спеціалісти "Інново" постійно навчаються, наприклад, у травні 5 терапевтів і психолог центру відвідають Міжнародний конгрес з нейрореабілітації в Парижі. Це чудова нагода перейняти досвід та поспілкуватись із колегами з цілого світу, а також переконатись, що ми на правильному шляху. Практичні семінари, лекції, нові знайомствами – це завжди шлях до розвитку.

ЗАРАЗ В "ІННОВО" 4 КОМАНДИ ФІЗИЧНИХ ТЕРАПЕВТІВ, З ДИТИНОЮ ПРАЦЮЮТЬ КІЛЬКА ЛЮДЕЙ ОДНОЧАСНО, БО ЦЕ ДАЄ БІЛЬШ ЕФЕКТИВНИЙ РЕЗУЛЬТАТ, РОБИТЬ ГРУ (ПРАЦЮ) ЦІКАВІШОЮ ТА БЕЗТУРБОТНОЮ. є не настільки обнадійливим. Ми противники такого підходу, адже хочемо надати кожній дитині доступний рівень незалежності – для когось це навчитись ходити, а для когось – пересуватись на візочку чи з допоміжними засобами. Ці речі теж роблять дітей самостійними. Та батькам часом важко змиритись з реальністю. Важливим моментом є прийняти вольове рішення – адже час втікає, і дитина не вчиться бути незалежною. Наукові дослідження кажуть нам, що ступінь важкості захворювання людини не є прямо пропорційним до рівня якості її життя. Людина на візку чи лежача може бути більш щасливою, ніж людина, яка пересувається самостійно. Все залежить від потреб цих людей і міри їх реалізації (задоволення). Хто є, в основному, вашим пацієнтом? Ми не обираємо пацієнтів, будь-хто може прийти на консультацію до нас. Ми намагаємось допомогти, не залежно від прогнозованого результату. Звісно, існують й протипокази до фізичної реабілітації – тоді в команді з лікарями приймаємо стратегічні рішення. В "Інново" дуже багато пацієнтів з цілої України, адже спеціалісти зі Львова є на доброму рахунку. У нас реабілітуються клієнти з Білорусії, Польщі, Грузії, Вірменії, у літній період багато американців, українського походження, що поєднують свій візит в Україну з можливістю реабілітації. На базі "Інново" створено курси англійської мови, тому знаходимо спільну мову зі всіма!

Часом люди надають перевагу лікуванню закордоном, в надії на вищий рівень медичних чи реабілітаційних послуг. Чи варто це робити? Недавно ми запросили в "Інново" викладачів з ерготерапії (спеціальність схожа до фізичного терапевта), що проводили навчання в УКУ. Всі наші гості кваліфіковані фахівці: віце-президент Всесвітньої федерації ерготерапії, старший ерготерапевт- професор з австралійського університету, канадійські та британські колеги. Нам була цікавою їхня думка про центр, адже тут ми на практиці використовуємо ті речі, яким вони приїхали навчати до Львова. Насправді, ми дуже хвилювались, але потім зрозуміли, що закордонні колеги у захваті від нашої праці, вони й гадки не мали, що такий центр існує в Україні – з прогресивним підходом роботи, а не пасивними процедурами; підбором візка та інших допоміжних засобів. Насправді професійний рівень центру "Інново" цілком відповідає європейському. Звісно люди пробують усі варіанти, щоб зарадити дитині. Та побувавши закордоном, повертаються, бо у нас нічим не гірше, але краще тим, що немає мовного бар’єру. Ти у себе вдома, в Україні! Також команда "Інново" докладає всіх зусиль, щоб рівень фізичної терапії зростав не тільки у нас, але й в цілій Україні. З цією метою я викладаю в Innovo Academy навчальний курс для фахівців та розповідаю їм про сучасні методики й пояснюю їх застосування. NOTHING'S HARD IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO IT! For ten years already, the Innovo Medical Centre of Physical Therapy & Pain Medicine improves the quality of life of people and their physical condition thanks to the hard work of both its children’s and adults’ departments. Along the way, Innovo has become Ukraine’s leader in the field of children’s rehabilitation. Lviv Today met with Zakhar Kozii, chief physical therapist at children’s department who told more about centre’s everyday life. Please tell us, how you started your medical career as physical therapist? My professional career started at Lviv’s Dzherelo Children's Rehabilitation Centre in which I worked for 3 years. It was in this place where I realized that I like working with people. While studying all physical therapists gain burning desire to help all patients: to make people walk again after blood stroke, make feel healthy after injuries, however not many of them want to work with children. At Dzherelo Center I clearly understood that for me working with kids is very easy as they are sincere, authentic and I quickly find method of communicating with them, received feedback and all that became solid foundation for my future work. At this medical institution I was also involved with kids in everyday routines – helped to put clothes on, go to the lavatory, played, but I needed to work more with physical rehabilitation. At some point I felt like I’m burning out and need some changes. And those changes came! I was offered job at newly founded Innovo Medical Centre of Physical Therapy. At the very beginning it was a bit scary – among centre’s employees were a lot of students, who constantly asked for my advice as I already had some experience, however I for sure didn’t knew everything. It was at Innovo centre, where I learned many new things – talking to parents, providing consultations and co-operating with other resident physicians. I start feeling successful, as I saw that I am getting good results and I satisfy my position. I felt inspired as everything that I dreamt of during 5 years in professional aspect became real! And the recipe for success is very simple – Innovo is a big team of like-minded people, who work hard for same goal. What are the perfect qualities for physical therapist? Alongside professional skills for physical therapist is obligatory to have sympathy for patients, being good listener, understanding and cooperative. Not everybody can manage it as along the way many people who came to work at Innovo failed as the job is very demanding and complex. But somebody should do it. That is why it is very important to feel comfortable at what you are doing, to love your job, be appropriate and then everything will come easy.

What methods of physical rehabilitation are implemented at Innovo centre? In reality there is no need to invent anything new, as there are lots of world’s proven rehabilitation practices. It is necessary to learn how to implement those practices and get positive results. At Innovo physical therapist’s job is based on evidence based medicine, that during decades checks various methods and their effectiveness. Of course, with time being methods sustain changes, so are we as we also change, learn, search for something new in order to get best results for the patients. At Innovo we work with children via games, as all kids love to play, it is natural for them. It is during playing games, when therapist can do a lot of things, providing therapeutic treatment in form of jolly pastime or entertainment. During those games we train children’s functions and physical qualities: we teach how to hold

head up, roll over, go, jump, run etc. our main task is to made the kid maximum socialized and selfreliant. Sometimes we have very complicated patients – kids that are completely dependable on family members, so in such cases we must teach them how in best way to provide care and give tips how to play games, as kids not always can express their needs and emotions. Is the result of rehabilitation dependable on child’s age? Quick diagnostic assessment and intervention to the problem gives better prognosis in the future. It is also important to bring as much help as possible – neurologist, psychologist, pediatrician, speech-language pathologist and physical therapist and together with family, provide treatment to the child. For the present time I notice

COVER STORY tendency that more families with kids 1,5–2 years old come for consultations, in comparison with kids mainly 4-5 years old who came couple of year ago. That tendency confirms level of trust from the parents to our centre as for them their child is the most precious person in the world. Professionally we are very happy with this tendency as being specialists we can be the first ones to tackle problem and provide all help and knowledge that we possess. Nowadays there are numerous rehabilitation centres, so what’s so special about Innovo? Yes, in Ukraine exist many different rehabilitation centres, however it is Innovo that provides the best physical rehabilitation. We do not compete with such centers as Dzherelo, as it is the place where children with special needs live and are. Such types of medical institutions should exist not only in each city but be several in each part of the city. We work in very specific area of rehabilitation – we provide physical rehabilitation and are proud to gain excellent results in this field. For now at Innovo works 4 teams of physical therapists so that with each kid works several specialists simultaneously as such practice is more effective and makes treatment in form of game more interesting and easy. Team of employees at Innovo is constantly developing, for the moment at centre works psychologist, social care teacher, and we are about to fill in vacancy of speech-language. Considering that we started only providing therapy we did pretty good. Thanks to our management team, Innovo’s specialists improve their skills, for example, five therapists and psychologist will take part in the International Congress on Neurorehabilitation which will take place in Paris in May. That would be excellent opportunity to share experience and communicate with colleagues from around the globe to make sure that we are following the right path. Practical seminars, lectures and new acquaintance are always the best ways for development. What difficulties you as physical therapist have faced? There are some specific problems, with which we are constantly dealing, for example ideas from other specialists, who consult patient’s parents. Some specialists provide parents with unrealistic hopes in cases where prognosis is not so positive. We are against such approach as we want to give each child possibility to get to accessible level of independence – for some kids it is learning how to go,

for others it is possibility to move in wheel-chair or with the help of other means. Such options make children feel independent. However for parents it is sometime very hard to face and accept reality. It is important to make final decision as time is of essence for children who need to learn how to be self-dependent. Scientific researches show us that the severeness of an illness of the person is not directly related to quality of life. A man in wheelchair or bedridden patient could be more happy than a person who can go freely. Everything depends on necessities of those people and level of their implementation or satisfaction. Who are mainly your patients? We do not choose our patients, anyone can come to us for consultation. We do our best to help patients, despite predicted results. Surely there are physical rehabilitation contraindications and in such cases we jointly, with other doctors, take strategic decisions. At Innove come many patients from around Ukraine as centre’s specialists are well known. Also come patients from Belarus, Poland, Georgia, Armenia, in summer come many Americans of Ukrainian descent, who combine their visits to Ukraine with physical rehabilitation. We even launched English language courses at Innovo, in order to communicate freely with everybody! Sometimes people choose treatment abroad, hoping that level of medical or rehabilitation services will be higher. Is it worth considering? Recently we invited teachers of Ergotherapy (Occupational therapy), who provided courses at Ukrainian Catholic University to visit Innovo. Among those visitors were highly qualified specialists: the vicepresident of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, ergotherapy professor from Australian University, Canadian and British colleagues. We were very interested to hear their opinion about our centre, as we practically implement those knowledges that they came to Lviv to share with. We were very anxious until we realized that foreign colleagues are truly fascinated to see our work, as they had no idea that such centre exists in Ukraine – with progressive

approach to treatment, with no passive time consuming procedures; with possibility to select best wheel-chair or any other additional means. Frankly, professional level of services at Innovo is completely in accordance with European requirements. It is understandable that people use all alternatives in order to help their child. However after being abroad they come back, as they realize that we are on same level, even better as here there is no language barrier. They are in Ukraine, at home! Team at Innovo puts a lot of efforts to improve level of physical therapy not only at the centre, but in Ukraine in general. With such noble goal I personally teach at Innovo Academy educational course for specialists and tell them about all the latest methods and their implementations. LVIV SOCIETY EVENT INDUSTRY FORUM 2019 Arena Lviv hosted the Event Industry Forum 2019 last month – the biggest event designed specifically for the event management industry in Ukraine. The program was designed to widen the understanding of an event manager’s work, highlight new possibilities, set a new pace for the market, and inspire a new creative impulse for the industry. Well over 1,000 attendees saw speakers like Jenny Bjorkloff (Event Jenny,

Belgium), Salvatore Sagone (BEA World, Italy), and Kartyna Nekleva (S*EVENT, Ukraine) and networked with influential festival and business forum organisers, producers, designers, PR managers, and CEOs. The two-day event also saw the EventEXPO – a trade show featuring trendy technologies and services that will help industry professionals promote and optimise their event management activities. Event highlights

included panel discussions on the proposed Lviv Event Hall, which could become a national hub for the Ukrainian event management industry, and the popular ‘How to develop the international business events market in Ukraine’ discussion. With its large audience, the Event Industry Forum again confirmed its large impact on the city and secured its position as the leading and most influential forum in the event.

The rich and colourful Chinese New Year celebrations took place in venues across Lviv, including Rynok Square, from 2–5 February. Organised by the Lanhua Cultural Research Centre of Ukraine & China, Leopolitan fans of Oriental culture and guests of the city were delighted by traditional Chinese food and activities. Festivalgoers tried authentic Chinese cuisine and different cultural activities, like singing, dancing, arts and crafts, and even kung fu workshops. Lviv’s Malevich Night Club hosted several concerts as part of the fun, but the highlight – as always – was the Live Fire Dragons carnival parade through Lviv’s picturesque city centre.

Львівські шанувальники східної культури та гості міста були в захваті від дегустацій китайської кухні, традиційних і сучасних китайських культурних заходів, де можна було почути китайську музику й пісні, побачити народні танці, вироби народних ремесел, лазерні шоу і навіть майстер-класи кунг-фу. В рамках програми відбулось кілька святкових концертів у нічному клубі "Малевич", та найцікавішим для публіки був традиційний похід вогняного дракона центральними вулицями міста.

"ENTERTAINING" EXHIBITION BY BOHDAN BILINCHUK Lviv’s Art Palace recently gave Leopolitan art lovers and guests of the city a reason to get out of their homes in the middle of winter by cheering them up with Bohdan Bilinchuk’s ‘Entertaining’ exhibition. The exhibition features over 50 sculptures of ceramic and bronze and more than 50 oil and pastel paintings designed to put a smile on your face. Bilinchuk’s funny and optimistic creations are wildly popular with people that have a sense of humour and many collectors are proud to show off his works in their own collections, including former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. A professional surgeon by trade from the Ivano Frankivsk region, he has spent the last 40 years as a sculptor and artist.

"КУМЕДНА" ВИСТАВКА БОГДАНА БІЛІНЧУКА Для тих, хто вже втомився від зими та негоди, чудовою нагодою підняти собі настрій стала виставка скульптора Богдана Білінчука, яка недавно експонувалась у Львівському палаці мистецтв. Оптимістичні та смішні твори художника мали величезний успіх серед людей з почуттям гумору. Твори Б. Білінчука можна побачити у багатьох приватних колекціях по всьому світу, зокрема, у третього президента України Віктора Ющенка та колишнього держсекретаря США Хілларі Клінтон, яка вподобала й придбала собі його фігурки бронзових кішок. Професійний хірург, Богдан Білінчук походить з Івано-Франківської області. Митець брав участь у 85 виставках і сьогодні є членом Національної спілки художників України. Протягом останніх 40 років він займався пластикою малих форм, проте з 2004 року він також зацікавився живописом.

HOCKEY DAY IN LVIV WITH #OPUNIFIER On 10 February as Lviv’s Rynok Square hosted the Hockey Day celebration. The day’s highlight was when our Galician Lions took on a joint team of Canadian troops representing #OpUNIFIER. The Ukraine National Army Academy got things rolling with rousing versions of both countries anthems and at the end of two 10-minute periods, our Galician Lions showed the Canadians a thing or two about the game by winning 9-6. After the game, fans were invited to dress up as a hockey player and enjoy delicious pampukhs (Ukrainian doughnuts) with traditional Canadian maple syrup.

Ринок відзначили День хокею, головною подією якого став хокейний поєдинок на міській ковзанці між гравцями хокейного клубу “Галицькі Леви” та командою Збройних сил Канади, представниками #OpUNIFIER. Перед матчем оркестр Національної академії сухопутних військ імені гетьмана Петра Сагайдачного виконав гімни обох країн. Хокеїсти зіграли два періоди по 10 хвилин кожен. "Галицькі леви" здобули перемогу з рахунком 9:6. Після гри кожен охочий міг спробувати себе у ролі хокеїста та скуштувати пампухів із традиційним канадським кленовим сиропом.

WINTER DOG SHOWS 2019 On weekend of January 26–27 Leopolitan animal lovers and guests of the city had wonderful chance to enjoy world-class displays of dog competitions at “Memory of Olga Nizova” & “Сup of Lemberg 2019” which took place at the Pivdenny-Expo Exhibition Centre. The event featured shows for Central Asian Shepherd Dogs, Bouledogue Francais, American Akita, Golden Retrievers, Chihuahuas, Siberian Huskies, and Welsh Corgi Pembroke breeds take centre stage. The canines were judged by an international jury –Stefan Popov (Bulgaria), Jarosław Grunt (Poland), Doncho Borisov and Pero Bozinovski (Macedonia), Savvas Hadjisavvas (Cyprus) and Galina Zhuk (Belarus).

Badminton: Leopolitan Wins Bronze The Badminton National Cup took place in Kyiv over the 30 January to 2 February weekend, where Lviv was represented by athletes from the Children & Youth sports school and local badminton club. Volleyball: Leopolitans among winners of the Super League After finishing of the 12 stage of men volleyball Super League, team “BarkomKazhany” continue to be leaders of the tournament table with 62 points, outrunning the next close team “Sertse Podillya” by 7 points. In the recent home matches, that took place on February 8-9th against Kharkiv’s “Yuracademia” team, coach of “Kazhany” used many various combinations and players sets. Both teams played their best games: the first match ended with score 3:0 (25:23, 25:20, 25:20) and 3:1 while the second match saw the results of 25:18, 21:25, 25:12, 25:14. There is still two stages of games to be played till the Play offs start. The final, 14th stage “Kazhany” will be playing on March 8-9 against Sumy’s “ShVSM-SumDU” team. Come and support your team!

Lviv's best Athlete of the Month: Olena Starikova Leopolitan cyclist Olena Starikova was named Lviv’s Athlete of the Month for January after starring in several international events. At the 5th round of the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in New Zealand, Starikova won silver in the individual sprint event. She won another silver in Hong Kong for the 6th round, this time alongside Lyubov Basova in the women’s team sprint. Congratulations Olena!

Snowboard: Ukraine’s triumphal silver in Parallel Snowboard Postgraduate of Lviv State University of Physical Culture Annamari Dancha won silver at the Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships that took place in USA from February 1 to 10. Annamari made her World Cup debut in October 2006. As of January 2018, her best finish is 8th, in a parallel giant slalom in Bulgarian Bansko in 2017–18 season. That season became the most successful for her: 1 finish in Top-8 and four more finishes in Top-16. 10 more times she qualified for knockout stage at World Cup predominantly in parallel giant slalom. Her best overall finish is 22nd, in 2010–11, when she thrice qualified for knockout stage. She qualified to represent Ukraine at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. In parallel giant slalom she finished 28th which was last place due to her disastrous first run. In February 2019, she ranked 6th in PGS event at the World Championships which was the best ever result for Ukraine at snowboarding competitions of the highest level. But the next day she surprised everybody by winning a silver medal in parallel slalom which was the first ever medal for Ukraine at international snowboard competitions of the highest level.

Тріумфальне срібло України на чемпіонаті світу Аспірантка Львівського державного університету фізичної культури Аннамарі Данча завоювала срібло на чемпіонаті світу з фрістайлу та сноуборду, який проходив у США з 1 по 10 лютого. Аннамарі дебютувала на Чемпіонаті світу в жовтні 2006 року. Станом на січень 2018 року її найкраще досягнення – восьме місце у паралельному гігантському слаломі у болгарському місті Банско в сезоні 2017–18. Цей сезон став для неї найуспішнішим. Ще 10 разів вона претендувала на вихід у фінал Чемпіонату світу переважно в паралельному гігантському слаломі. Її найкращий загальний фініш – 22 місце у сезоні 2010–11, коли вона тричі пройшла відбіркову кваліфікацію. Аннамарі Данча представляла Україну на зимових Олімпійських іграх 2018 року в Пхенчхані. В паралельному гігантському слаломі вона посіла останнє 28 місце через падіння в першому спуску. У лютому 2019 року вона посіла 6 місце в паралельному гігантському слаломі на Чемпіонаті світу, що було найкращим результатом для України на змаганнях зі сноубордингу найвищого рівня. Western Ukraine’s air gateway Lviv International Airport continued to set the pace in 2018 among the country’s regional airports, posting a 48% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers. Traffic peaked in December 2018, with a monthly increase of 58% compared the previous year to reach 129,000 passengers. The number of airlines flying from Lviv also continued to expand, with 34% more flights in the last month of 2018 than at the end of 2017. Notably, over 1,000 of the airport’s 1,282 flights during December 2018 were to international destinations, mostly within the EU. These figures

place Lviv International Airport firmly at the forefront of an aviation industry boom that reflects Ukraine’s post-2014 economic recovery as well as the city’s growing international appeal as a tourism and investment destination. Lviv’s proximity to the EU and distance from the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine (the city is considerably closer to Berlin, Prague and Vienna than it is to the frontlines in Donetsk and Luhansk regions) have helped make it a relatively attractive option for international investors. Today’s Lviv boasts a growing manufacturing sector and a thriving IT industry that benefits from the human capital of the city’s large

student population. It is also enjoying increasing recognition as an international tourist destination, attracting more than two million visitors in 2018 thanks to a dynamic tourism industry centered on the cozy environs and renaissance splendor of Lviv’s historic city center. While Lviv International Airport’s recent experience reflects the progress made by the city since 2014, the absolute opposite is true of Donetsk. As the unofficial capitals of western and eastern Ukraine, Lviv and Donetsk both saw comprehensive airport overhauls as part of Ukraine’s preparations to co-host the UEFA Euro 2012 football championships. These upgrades transformed Soviet-era airport infrastructure in both cities into modern facilities designed to serve as international gateways for the new Ukraine. However, while Lviv airport has become one of the brighter aspects of Ukraine’s European integration efforts, Donetsk International Airport lies in ruins and has become a symbol of the undeclared war between Russia and Ukraine.

Russian hybrid forces seized Donetsk International Airport in late spring 2014 as part of the Kremlin-led takeover of the Donbas region that followed Moscow’s annexation of Crimea. Ukrainian troops were initially able to regain control of the airport, but it soon became a battleground. No commercial flights have landed in Donetsk since 26 May 2014 when large-scale military hostilities first erupted. Instead, Donetsk International Airport emerged as one of the key objectives of the fighting around the city, with increasingly outgunned and outnumbered Ukrainian forces remaining in possession of the airport until late January 2015. During months of intense daily clashes, the dogged Ukrainian defenders earned the nickname “cyborgs” from their exasperated adversaries. By the time this epic defense ended, the entire airport complex lay in complete ruins. It remains a wasteland today, stranded on the frontlines of a simmering conflict with no end in sight. The grim fate of Donetsk International

Airport mirrors the tragedy of the wider Donbas region. Meanwhile, booming Lviv airport offers a hint of the benefits Donetsk might also have enjoyed if the city had been able to embrace Ukraine’s European choice in 2014 rather than becoming a focal point of Russian aggression.

75% of CEOs anticipated development for their business in 2019. 58% of them planned to increase the number of their staff, while 42% planned to increase the salary by 10-20%. The anticipated rates of Ukrainian Hryvnia to US Dollar were at 30 UAH/USD. Such data was received as a result of the research "Business Forecast" conducted by EBA last year. That is to say, the majority of companies indicated that 2019 would be marked by growth. None the less, is there a necessity right now to adjust these predictions? It should be taken into consideration that IMF corrected the prognosis about the growth of the global economy. This issue was discussed on January 29 in Kyiv at the EBA Global Outlook 2019: Shaping the Future. Before the beginning of the discussion of the plans for 2019, Executive Director of the EBA, Anna Derevyanko, showcased 10 principal achievements, which were important for business during the last 5 years. The list included such achievements as: the establishment of a freetrade zone between the EU and Ukraine, a visa-free regime, the launch of the automatic VAT refund system, the liberalization of the foreign-exchange market, the clearing of the banking sector, the launch of Prozorro and public procurement conducted through this system, the cancellation of price regulations for socially important goods, the launch of a singlewindow system at customs, the testing of TSA for customs payments, as well as the start of judicial, pension, educational reform and health care reform. “This is, in fact, an excursion into the past, so that we can look into the future, in order to know what to expect and how to be successful in the year of double elections. In addition, for the first time, we decided to invite a small business representative to a discussion. This is a participant of the EBA project – Unlimit Ukraine. I think it will be interesting to look into the future development of the small business of our state in particular,” added Anna Derevyanko. General Director of Dragon Capital Tomas Fiala indicated that the inflation is expected to be at 7.5% this year. However, the tendency predicts that it will decrease. Next year, it is projected to be at 6%, and in further future it will be approaching the target of the NBU at 5%. In the last three years GDP has been growing, albeit at a slow pace. The next year its growth is expected to slow down a little bit. However, in general, GDP will grow at the expense of increased consumption. Among the main challenges, Tomas Fiala named the presidential and parliamentary elections, and the economic challenge – budget funding. LVIV TODAY | February 2019

Olena Voloshina, the Head of the IFC in Ukraine, stressed that 2019 will be difficult, because the Ukrainian economy is export-oriented and very dependent on external factors. “Therefore, it is important to keep monetary policy and independence of the NBU, to make reforms where possible, to continue the reform of the banking and gas sector. We must progress with land reform, privatization and concession. We should think about how to attract money that is outside the banking system and how to get them back to the financial sector, since they are commensurate with the amounts that we are trying to borrow. We have to create such conditions for young people so that they want to live in our country,” emphasized Ms. Voloshina. Among the challenges, she named the shadow economy and migration of labor resources. She advised to face such challenges through partnership, and through effectively building your business processes. And right now, cool projects are being born at the junction of fields, for example, agri-tech, and agro-IT.

General Director of Metro Cash and Carry Ukraine, Olivier Langlet, has highlighted the positive expectations for 2019. At the same time, he noted that new business tools should be sought for business development. For example, for the Metro network it means an online consumer solution. Small business at EBA Global Outlook was represented by co-founder of Woolkrafts, Oleg Mikhailov. He stressed that they had positive expectations for 2019, and noted that the key to small business development is the understanding of value. In Europe, small businesses account for about 40%. In Ukraine, in recent years, there is also a positive trend. So, hopefully, we will keep to this trend in the future as well. In general, we can say that the business does not expect something significantly different from what EBA Business Forecast had predicted, and that the main recommendation for 2019 is to hold the ground.

NEW CURRENCY LEGISLATION CAME INTO FORCE ON FEBRUARY 7, 2019 The new Law of Ukraine “On Currency and Currency Operations” dated 21 June 2018 ("the Law") finally becomes applicable

The new currency regulation will consist of 8 key NBU Resolutions. Starting from February 7, 2019 a number of restrictions in the foreign exchange (FX) market will be abolished or liberalized, in particular: • the time limit for settlements under export-import transactions is extended from 180 to 365 days; • supervision over export-import transactions for amount less than an equivalent of UAH 150,000 is cancelled; • registration of cross-border loans with the NBU is cancelled; • standard bank accounts with Ukrainian banks now available to nonresident legal entities for commercial activity in Ukraine; • the automated system of e-limits is introduced instead of individual licenses for certain FX operations. • Still, some important restrictions in the FX market are remained by the NBU, in particular: • EUR 7 million limit for repatriation of dividends per month; • EUR 5 million limit for repatriation of foreign investments per month; • ban for set-off under export-import transactions; • mandatory exchange of 50% of foreign currency proceeds of legal entities.

Oleh Kyryievskyy, Chairman of Customs Committee of EBA Western Ukrainian Office, Partner at Advice Group New currency legislation will make export/import activities in Ukraine more market-oriented. Not only because the term of payment within a foreign trade contract will be now 365 days (twice as was) and some archaic sanctions will no longer be applicable. But, mainly, because a new law acknowledges there should be no limitations in payments or supply of goods terms – only in certain exclusive circumstances. And while some substantive fines for terms breach are still there, the trend is surely to deregulate the field. What I also appreciate is a supervisory but not controlling approach over the business in this regard. We should also mention the risky moment that, I believe, is more a legislative mistake. It looks like, that with a new law introduced, services in foreign economic activity, will also be a subject of currency supervision. I really hope Cabinet of Ministers will clarify the issue with the forthcoming decision on the matter.

Ganna Kalinichenko, Maryna Korolkevych, Head of Currency Control Department at CREDIT AGRICOLE Bank The key to the bank will remain the KYC (know your client) approach. The new law provides the transition from customer control to risk-based oversight. Banks will not require documents more than it is necessary to clarify the purpose of the transaction. Significant changes will be mostly for small and medium-sized businesses, since export-import transactions are not subject to control of up to 150 thousand hryvnya in equivalents. Banks will ask for documents for the first transactions only to understand the essence of the transaction. Then all future operations will be simplified. Also, banks are waiting for requests from large business, because they have the opportunity to enter into currency forwards to hedge debt obligations. In addition, companies will be able to pay bonuses, compensation, open accounts and transfer funds abroad, because it was all under the subject of licensing. Among the innovations are the lending rates that banks will need to determine themselves, at the moment the billing mechanism is in line with the NBU.

Ukrainian business and foreign investors not without reason concern themselves with the last changes in Ukrainian currency legislation since they will have a direct influence on their activities. Among other things, foreign investors are particularly interested in the repatriation of dividends and capital. Basically, new currency legislation does not introduce anything new in comparison with the existing rules. For instance, the NBU extended EUR 7 million limit for repatriation of dividends per month and EUR 5 million limit for repatriation of foreign investments per month. The list of the documents to be provided to a bank for effecting respective payments remained more or less the same. For local companies as well as for individuals cross-border investments are of immediate interest. It is well-known fact that since adoption by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of the Decree On Currency Regulation And Currency Control in 1993 currency cross-border investments have been falling under the NBU licensing regime. With effect from 7th February, all individual licenses will be abolished. At the same time the individual licensing regime will be replaced with an e-limits system providing for annual limits within which companies and individuals will be able to make such investments. Please advise if I am entitled to do so, taking into account my status and if there are any peculiarities of such activity. Thank you, Tom Dear Tom, thank you for your inquiry. As a foreign citizen you have a right to acquire both residential and nonresidential property in Ukraine, however, further activities you anticipate to conduct have certain peculiarities. For purchase of the real estate ("RE") you will need your passport and Ukrainian tax code issued by the tax office on the basis of application. Sale and purchase agreement ("SPA") shall be executed at the notary’s office by you as the buyer or your representative (acting on the virtue of PoA). Payment of the purchase price might be conducted in UAH on the seller’s bank account or in USD or EUR via wire transfer (considering that you are non-resident). If the owner is married – the notary might require notarized consent of the spouse on the purchase/sale. All title rights are subject to registration in public online state register of immovable property rights. So, as soon as the property is registered at your name (usually – the same date as execution of the agreement, unless otherwise is provided by the SPA), this information is reflected on-line. Apartments in old buildings in the city center are usually the monuments of the local architectural heritage. If this is the case, the deal would require collection of the certain pre-transaction documents and certain additional obligation will arise for the new owner after the acquisition. In case the square of RE object exceeds 60 sq.m for an apartment and 120 sq. m for a house, the annual RE tax shall be also paid for extra square at the rate determined by regional counsels or by the tax code (if exceeds the maximum square (300 sq. m – apartment and 500 sq. m – house)). Sale of the RE property. The income received in the result of the sale of the RE property is subject to taxation by military tax (MT) (1,5%) and personal income tax (PIT) (18% – for non-residents and 5% – for residents). The tax is not applicable upon the following conditions: RE is owned by the seller for more than 3 years; its residential property; it is the 1st sale of RE property per corresponding year. For alienation (tax purposes) – property evaluation is always required. Taxes in jurisdiction of your residence shall be determined according to existing international double taxation treaties, but usually such are paid in jurisdiction where RE is located. Lease of RE property. Income gained by the individual from the lease of RE is also subject to taxation at rate 18% of PIT and 1,5% of MT. Please, note that RE owned by the foreign citizen is allowed for lease only through the representative – legal entity of private entrepreneur acting as a tax agent under a separate written agreement.

Despite the fact that a lot of limitations are still valid, it is expected that the anti-crisis provisions are to be abolished as soon as macroeconomic and macro-financial conditions are improved. In general – adoption of new currency legislation is a significant step towards simplification of the procedures, harmonization of Ukrainian legislation with EU and international practices and shifting of foreign trade on the new level. TO BE OR NOT TO BE? INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY IN UKRAINE

he 8th of March, or International Women’s Day (IWD), is one of the biggest celebrations in Ukraine. But for how long is the question. While the day has its roots in the American protest movements of the 19th and 20th Centuries, the celebration has long been associated with the Soviet Union, which largely popularized and politicised the proceedings. As Ukraine continues to tinker with its holiday calendar – to move away from traditional Russian celebrations to a more European schedule – it begs the question: is time ticking on International Women’s Day in Ukraine?

BORN OF PROTEST While IWD is popularly believed to have begun in 1909 when the Socialist Party of America first declared the day as “official”, it is known that women workers protested low wages and poor working conditions as early as March 1857. Regardless, it didn’t take long for the celebration to spread to Europe and the Socialist International adopted the holiday in 1910. The event drew over one million people to the next year’s rallies and by 1913 and 1914, millions of women across the northern hemisphere used 8 March to protest the coming of the First World War.

USSR: “THIS IS OURS” By 1917, women in Petrograd and other cities across the Russian Empire rallied on IWD for “Bread and Peace”. Just a week later Czar Nicholas abdicated, and the provisional government soon granted women the right to vote. The rest is Soviet history – Aleksandra Kollontai persuaded Lenin to make IWD an official Soviet holiday and by 1965 it was recognised as an official day of rest. It’s remained that way ever since – at least in Ukraine, Russia, and other postSoviet countries.

THE WEST: “YOU CAN HAVE IT”

PRESENTS OR PROTESTS?

At the same time, by the 1930s IWD was no longer truly international. The USA, where it all began, was one of the first to abandon the holiday as both Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day gathered steam. Much of Western Europe followed suit. And although IWD is formally recognised by the United Nations, only a dozen countries outside Eastern Europe officially recognise the day as a holiday – mostly nations friendly to the former USSR, like China, Cuba, and Vietnam. While not an official holiday, IWD has gained more influence more recently in Western countries, where protests and rallies in support of women’s issues are often held. Some efforts have been made to recognise the holiday, including in Berlin, which will observe the holiday officially for the first time this year.

Feeble attempts to reinvigorate the political background of the day have been met without enthusiasm. Last year, women’s marches were held across Ukraine, including Lviv, where participants rallied for equal representation in government, against the “patriarchy”, to abolish traditional gender roles, and to support the ratification of the Istanbul Convention (to prevent violence against women). IWD remains one of the few opportunities for public action on women’s issues.

UKRAINE: “CAN WE KEEP IT IF IT’S NOT SOVIET?” In Ukraine, IWD seems to have evolved to the point where it closely resembles a combination of Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day; the need to commemorate “the outstanding merits of women in communist construction” having long been forgotten. The holiday of the “equitable woman of the USSR” has metamorphosized into a holiday of beauty, flowers, gentleness, and spring. A day formally dedicated to women’s rights has now transformed into a reason for men to prepare a celebratory feast (perhaps for the only time in the year) and give presents – especially expensive ones – to eagerly awaiting women. For many, it’s one of the only days of the year where a woman can expect to get a little attention and appreciation simply for being a woman.

THE FUTURE OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY Each year Ukrainians debate publicly about reshaping the popular holiday or dropping it altogether. As Ukraine moves to drop its ‘communist’ public holidays as part of de-communisation, the question that remains difficult to answer is ‘how communist in International Women’s Day’? On the one side, nationalist-minded people advocate for its removal as a “foreign, enemy” holiday and to celebrate Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day like in the West. On the other – International Women’s Day remains one of the single, most popular holidays in the country and riots could accompany any changes.

іжнародний жіночий день 8 березня є одним з найпопулярніших свят в Україні. Але чи так буде завжди?. Зародившись в американських протестних рухах 19 і 20 століть, свято впевнено увійшло в життя Радянського Союзу, де воно було значною мірою популяризоване і політизоване. В наш час календар державних свят в Україні продовжує змінюватись, щоб більше наблизитись до європейського.

НАРОДЖЕНЕ З ПРОТЕСТІВ Хоча, як вважається, що це свято бере початок у 1909 році, коли Соціалістична партія Америки вперше оголосила його "офіційним", відомо, що жінки-робітниці протестували проти низьких зарплат і поганих умов праці ще в березні 1857 року. Незабаром святкування поширилось і в Європі, а Соціалістичний Інтернаціонал прийняв його у 1910 році. Ця подія зібрала мільйони людей на мітинги наступного року, а вже у 1913 та 1914 мільйони жінок у північній півкулі виходили 8 березня, щоб протестувати проти війни.

СРСР: "ЦЕ НАШЕ" У 1917 році жінки в Петрограді та інших містах Російської імперії згуртувалися 8 березня під гаслом "Хліба і миру". А через тиждень цар Микола ІІ відрікся від престолу, і тимчасовий уряд незабаром надав жінкам право голосу. Решта – це вже радянська історія – Олександра Коллонтай переконала Леніна зробити 8 березня офіційним радянським святом, а у 1965 році воно було був визнане вихідним днем. Відтоді так і залишалось – принаймні в Україні, Росії та інших пострадянських країнах.

Було докладено певних зусиль, щоб визнати свято, в тому числі і в Берліні, який вперше в цьому році буде відзначати його офіційно.

УКРАЇНА: “ЧИ ЗБЕРІГАТИ РАДЯНСЬКУ СПАДЩИНУ?” В Україні, здається, колишнє 8 березня починає дуже нагадувати поєднання дня святого Валентина та Дня матері; відзначення "видатних заслуг жінок у комуністичному будівництві" вже давно забуте. Радянське свято "рівноправ’я жінок" перетворилось на свято краси, квітів, ніжності та весни. День, офіційно присвячений правам жінок, тепер перетворився на привід для чоловіків приготувати святковий обід (можливо, єдиний раз на рік) і підносити подарунки – особливо дорогі – жінкам, які з нетерпінням цього чекають. Для багатьох це один з небагатьох днів у році, коли жінка може розраховувати на те, щоб отримати трохи більше уваги та вдячності просто за те, що вона жінка.

Таким чином, 8 березня залишається однією з небагатьох можливостей для публічних дій з питань жінок.

МАЙБУТНЄ МІЖНАРОДНОГО ЖІНОЧОГО ДНЯ Щороку українці публічно обговорюють питання про реформатування популярного свята або взагалі його скасування. Оскільки Україна йде шляхом декомунізації, мабуть, варто обговорити, наскільки комунізованим є Міжнародний жіночий день? Дехто виступає за скасування свята як "чужого, ворожого" і святкують лише день святого Валентина і День матері, як на Заході. З іншого боку – 8 березня залишається одним з найпопулярніших свят в Україні, і будь-які зміни можуть викликати реакцію. Очевидно, це свято переживає кризу ідентичності в Україні. Щороку уряд каже, що це буде останній раз, коли його святкують як національне свято. І щороку не зважується на такий крок. Навіть серед українських жінок немає єдності у цьому питанні – деякі відмовляються святкувати, інші бачать чудову можливість привітати інших жінок, своїх матерів, подруг та сестер. Втім, сьогодні Міжнародний жіночий день 8 березня залишається таким, яким він є – популярним днем вітання усіх жінок, а також чудовою нагодою відзначити повсякденну боротьбу жінок за свої права. Отож, якщо ви вирішили святкувати – вийти на мітинг за підтримку жіночих прав, або приготувати коханій коштовний подарунок чи просто обід з трьох страв – Lviv Today вітає всіх зі святом 8 березня.
