BO’s mega-hit miniseries ‘Chernobyl’ isn’t timely. Nor is it especially provocative. So, why has it created such a sensation over a retelling of an event that happened over 30 years ago? Because it’s the first time it’s been done properly. WHY WASN’T THIS DONE EARLIER?

This isn’t to take away anything from other documentaries (or especially books) on the subject. But HBO’s treatment of the event has people asking something that no other media about the Chornobyl disaster has forced people to ask – why wasn’t this done earlier? It’s hard to quantify the impact that a cultural heavyweight like HBO has on a subject, but based on its other highly-rated miniseries, like ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘Angels in America’, there’s at least a faith that the network will treat the subject properly. Then there’s the writing. The show does an admirable job of both telling the stories of ‘liquidators’ (those that were charged with cleaning up the mess, often at the expense of their own lives) and providing insight into the Soviet system that contributed to the design flaw that ultimately led to the disaster. That the show has viewers frantically Googling about personalities or events after each episode is aired is a welcomed and long overdue tribute to those heroic acts.

WHY DIDN’T I KNOW ABOUT THIS BEFORE? The five-part dramatic series about “the world’s greatest nuclear accident” also has people asking – why didn’t I know about these things before? For example, over 30 years after his suicide, the wider world is just now becoming familiar with the name of Valery Legasov and his role in containing the disaster. Even seasoned Ukrainophiles are speaking about events they weren’t aware of, such as the heroic actions of three plant workers to prevent a second explosion (see episode two). The scenes of family pets being executed or the pregnant wife of a firefighter risking everything to stay with her husband as he died are as devastating as they are real. The show paid tremendous attention to detail. That’s why it has become the highest-rated show in IMDB history (even ahead of fellow HBO giant Game of Thrones) with a 9.7 (out of 10) rating.

in Ukraine. If you can, watch it with a local. They will marvel at the settings and props and tell you which things they used to have in their own houses when they were growing up. But they will also inevitably ask – why didn’t WE do this? Perhaps the Moscow Times put it best, “The fact that an American, not a Russian, TV channel told the story about our own heroes is a source of shame for pro-Kremlin media”. Fair or not, that this impressive miniseries has stirred the world’s attention to remember those that were affected by the event – many of whom are still living today – is a timeless reminder of the sacrifices those very people made so long ago. THIS MONTH IN LEOPOLIS JAZZ FEST ‘19 26–30 June with stages at Rynok Square, Potocki Palace Yard (15 Kopernyka St.), and B. Khmelnytskyi Park of Culture & Leisure (4 Bolgarska St.) Attracting world-class performers from all over the world, the Leopolis Jazz Fest has become Lviv’s signature summer event. Immersing the city in an atmosphere of jazz since its inception, the five-day event attracts over a hundred of the world’s top jazz musicians to perform on three stages in the city centre. Now in its eighth year, the event attracts over 100,000 visitors each year and more than 200 accredited press. If you are fond of the music of Bobby McFerrin and Lisa Stansfield, be sure to mark your calendar and pick up tickets for this year’s festival, which runs from 26-30 June. The festival takes place on three stages: on Rynok Square, at the Potocki Palace Yard (both with free entrance), and on the Eddie Rosner stage in B. Khmelnytskyi Culture Park (ticket required). FESTIVAL HEADLINERS The main events, including performances by Leopolis Jazz Fest headliners, will take place at the Eddie Rosner main stage. You won’t want to miss the world-famous pianist and 22-time Grammy winner Chick Corea with the My Spanish Heart Band or talented Canadian singer and pianist Diana Krall. You’ll also be able to catch the legendary Bobby McFerrin, a 10-time Grammy winner and one of the world’s best-known vocal improvisers, and Kenny Barron, a jazz legend known simply as “the most lyrical pianist of our time”. Young French jazz pianist Adrien Brandeis is attracting a lot of attention, as is the concert by the iconic English songstress and actress Lisa Stansfield. Three-time Grammy winner Snarky Puppy is expected to be among the most popular performers. The group won the Best R&B Performance Grammy in 2014 and is regularly named ‘Band of the Year’ by prestigious jazz magazines like Downbeat and Jazztimes. Each of the group’s up to 25 musicians has their own solo projects and work with some of the biggest names in the industry, like Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Erykah Badu.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE JAZZ Leopolis Jazz Fest fans already know about the special Eddie Rosner awards ceremony. The award was established to honour musicians that have made a significant contribution toward the development of jazz music. Each year the winner is selected by a wide range of international experts, including music critics, prominent members of the jazz and arts communities, public officials, and journalists. Another unique aspect of Leopolis Jazz Fest are video screenings of rare jazz films, including new material from the extensive private collection of Ukrainian jazz luminary Leonid Goldstein. Jam sessions, workshops, and autograph sessions are also in store for festivalgoers, who won’t want to miss out on the Street Music initiative, which sees bands and musicians of all sorts playing on street platforms throughout Central Lviv. MORE THAN THE MUSIC Jazz fans with an appetite will want to head to Yunist Stadium in the B. Khmelnytskyi Park of Culture for the delicious Vsi.Svoi (All Ours) food court. CHARLOTTE: A TRI-COLOURED MUSICAL PLAY 27 June at 19:00 at the Voskresinnia Spiritual Theatre (5 Gen. Grygorenka St.) Lviv’s theatre-going public and guests of the city will be delighted with ‘Charlotte: A Tri-Coloured Musical Play’, the ambitious, genre-bending chamber musical based on the life and artwork of Charlotte Salomon. ‘Life? Or Work?’ is the name that Berlin-born, Jewish artist Salomon gave to nearly 800 paintings accompanied by text and music that she produced between 1940-42. Before being deported to Auschwitz at age 26, she gave the work to a local physician telling him “Take good care of this … it is my whole life”. Miraculously, the extraordinary work has survived to today. Charlotte was a playwright without a stage; a graphic novelist before such a thing existed; a young woman struggling to claim her voice and affirm her existence. Through painting, text, and music, she chronicled the inner life of a young woman coming of age during the rise of Nazism and under the shadow of family tragedies. ‘Charlotte: A Tri-Coloured Musical Play’ is a multinational collaboration by the Theaturtle theatre production company with a core creative team from Canada, the UK, and the Czech Republic. The essential quality of Theaturtle’s vivid production is the synchronicity of word, image, and music. It is conceived as an art installation inhabited by seven actor-singers and four musician-performers. The 1-hour 45-minute performance will be performed in English with Ukrainian subtitles and is sure to amaze and delight any devoted theatre fan. LVIV NIGHTS FESTIVAL 12–14 July at Museums and Galleries around Lviv It’s that time of year again! ШАРЛОТТА: TРИКОЛЬОРОВА ВИСТАВА З МУЗИКОЮ

ФЕСТИВАЛЬ "ЛЬВІВСЬКІ НОЧІ"

Львівська театральна публіка матимє нагоду переглянути амбітний, різножанровий камерний мюзикл "Шарлотта: трикольорова музична гра" на підставі історії життя й творчості Шарлотти Саломон. Вона народилась 1917 року і жила в Берліні у 1940-1942 роках перед тим, як її забрали до табору смерті Аушвіц. За ці неповні 2 роки вона створила понад 800 малюнків гуашшю, у яких виклала всю історію свого життя, додаючи до багатьох з них підписи та назви музичних творів для супроводу. Художниця пронумерувала і прошила всі малюнки а на титульному листі написала – "Життя чи театр? Зінгшпіль". Відчуваючи, що їй доведеться загинути, вона передала – свої роботи сімейному лікареві зі словами "Збережіть це… тут все моє життя". Дивом, надзвичайна робота збереглася до наших днів. Шарлотта була драматургом без сцени; графічним романістом ще до того, як такий жанр виник; молодою жінкою, що прагне висловлюватись вголос і стверджувати своє існування. За допомогою живопису, тексту й музики вона створила хроніку внутрішнього життя молодої жінки, яка досягла повноліття в часи піднесення нацизму і в тіні сімейних трагедій. "Шарлотта: трикольорова музична гра" – це інтернаціональне співробітництво театральної компанії Theaturtle з основним творчим колективом з Канади, Великобританії та Чехії. Постановка задумана як арт-інсталяція, де співіснують семеро акторів-співаків і четверо музикантів-виконавців. Спектакль виконується англійською мовою з українськими субтитрами на окремому екрані. ‘Ukrainian Haute Couture’ by famed Ukrainian designer Oksana Karavanska is all set to charm Leopolitan fashionistas and guests of the city on 28 June. Already one of Lviv’s chicest traditions, this year’s show will be a special event as part of the Leopolis Jazz Fest programme. Usually hosted in a very special place, the jubilee will be held at the Metropolitan A. Sheptytskyi Gardens, which are usually closed to the public. Karavanska helped launch the restoration of this cultural monument of ancient Lviv by regularly hosting the event there. The place’s heritage and air of aristocracy are seen through its spectacular landscape design, which works exquisitely with Karavanska’s regal fashions.

‘Ukrainian Haute Couture’ will premiere Karavanska’s newest collection, of which she closely collaborated with famous Leopolitan artist Yurko Koch. Eventgoers will also see unique handmade accessories by Georgian brand Boo Jewellery and its designer Tamuna Jikia. Musical guests include Maryna Krut and Shpylyasti Kobzari, finalists of last season’s Voice of Ukraine TV show. The soundtrack for the event was compiled by Volodymyr Yakymets, a member of Lviv’s legendary Pikkardiyska Tertsiya a cappella group. MATTHIAS KENDLINGER MUSIC FESTIVAL 9–13 July in Mirror Hall at Lviv National Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) and S. Ludkevich Concert Hall at Lviv National Philharmonic Society (7 Tchaikovsky St.) Now in its third year, the Matthias Kendlinger Music Festival is one of Lviv’s most important cultural events. Organised by Austrian conductor, composer, and impresario Matthias Kendlinger, the festival draws world-renowned artists to the Western Ukrainian capital each summer to perform selected pieces by Maestro Kendlinger. Leopolitan classic music lovers and guests of the city are always delighted by performances by the K&K Philharmoniker, and the Ukrainian National Choir Lviv, and will be pleased to see all these groups at this year’s festival. Some of the world’s most successful classical stars will wow audiences in the heart of Leopolitan summer, from 9–13 July. Festivalgoers will be able to see the premieres of the concertos ‘The Lost Son’ and violin concerto ‘Galaxy’. July 9. The festival kicks off on 9 July with the Galaxy Concerto for violin and orchestra performed by the K&K Philharmoniker. The young musicians have filled European concert halls with their transparent sound full of nuances and fine dynamics. Concertgoers can also look forward to the performance of conductor Taras Lenko and Armenian-French violinist Robert Stepanian, known for his beautiful performances with the Austrian orchestra. July 10. Music lovers won’t want to miss the The Priest ouverture and Song of Life for piano and bass on 10 July, at Mirror Hall at Lviv’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre which will also host the world premiere of The Lost Son symphonic poem for piano. That performance will feature the splendid Andrii Zarytskyi (bass) and rising Austrian pianist Philipp Scheucher, who recently won first prize at the University of Cologne’s ‘Karl-Robert Kreiten Musikwettbewerb” piano competition. July 11. Music aficionados will get another chance to admire the skills of Philipp Scheucher on 11 July during the concert featuring the Larissa concerto for piano and orchestra, the Healing meditative poem for string orchestra, and the Manipulation symphony alongside the Ukrainian National Choir Lviv and the K&K Philharmoniker, led by young conductor Maximillian Kendlinger. A talented accordionist and percussionist, Maximillian made his conducting debut in 2016 and has since become a regular at the rostrum at concerts across Europe. July 13. The final day of the festival (13 July) will see Matthias Kendlinger himself conduct the K&K Philharmoniker at Lviv’s famed Philharmonic Concert Hall in a superb concert featuring The Lost Son symphonic poem and Human Rights symphony for orchestra, choir, and soloists – Anna Shumarina (soprano), Oleg Lanovyy (tenor), and Stepan Drobit (baritone). Kendlinger took after his father by picking up the accordion at age five, explaining why his early works feature waltzes and polkas for the accordion. AUTHORS’ READING MONTH: ROMANIA 1 July – 4 August at 19:00 at Dzyga Culture & Arts Centre (35 Virmenska St.) The twentieth annual Authors’ Reading Month – the largest literary festival in Central Europe – will be held in Lviv from 1 July to 4 August. First held in Brno in 2000, the event soon spread to other cities, including Ostrava (2011), Wroclaw and Kosice (2012), and Lviv (2015). The focus of the festival is twofold: on one hand, it presents the national literature of the host countries; on the other, it presents the literature of a ‘Guest of Honour’ country each year – this year it’s Romania. Beginning each 1 July, participating cities host various events over the next month. Two authors are introduced each day – one visiting and one local. All in all, each city will host 62 writers throughout the month as well as over 300 authors’ readings and accompanying programmes. All readings are broadcast live and recordings are available online. Readings are in original language with Ukrainian subtitles on special screens. Alongside a host of other literary activities and projects, the event will allow Leopolitan literature lovers and guests of the city to get acquainted with the best of modern Romanian literature. ‘PEOPLE & PUPPETS’ PUPPET THEATRE FESTIVAL 21–23 June from noon at theatres around the city Lviv will host the ‘People & Puppets’ puppet theatre festival from 21-23 June. Puppetry is a rich, incisive, and paradoxical art form that calls on inanimate objects to remind us of our shared human experience. Вірменська, 35) Двадцятий щорічний Місяць авторських читань – найбільший літературний фестиваль у Центральній Європі – пройде у Львові з 1 липня по 4 серпня. The Multiplex cinema located at the newly opened Spartak sports & entertainment centre will screen some of the world’s best Oscar-nominated short live action films starting from 20 June. The Oscar shorts are always a mixed bag, but this year’s nominees are unusually similar, offering challenging – yet wellmade – stories of children in peril. The Academy skewed dark in its choices this year, selecting films to slit your wrists by – each one featuring child endangerment in a different form. A fifth, about a diabetic on her death bed, finds a glimmer of hope from a far more mature character. EUROFANZ 2019 June 28–30, Progress Stadium (1 B. Yanusha St.), Upper Field near Ukraina Stadium (5, Lypova Aleya St.), Agrarian University Stadium (1, V. Velykoho St. in Dublyany), Ukraina Stadium (5, Lypova Aleya St.) EuroFanz, the international fan-festival for football supporters from different nations, returns to Lviv from 28–30 June. Sponsored by Lifecell, this year’s event has attracted supporters from Belarus, Chechia, France, Latvia, Moldova, Sweden, and Ukraine. GRAN FONDO UKRAINE 14 July at 10:00 from Lviv to the town of Staryi Sambir Lviv will see the start of one of summer’s most exciting bicycling events on 14 July as Gran Fondo Ukraine rolls into the Western Ukrainian capital. Part personal challenge, part serious competition – Gran Fondo Ukraine leads riders along country roads with challenging climbs and incredible scenery. There are 90 km and 120 km courses so participants can choose a distance that matches their goals and ability. Each rider is assigned an electronic timing chip to keep track of their progress throughout the course and to allow riders to compete for top times in certain course sections. There are no traditional start/finish times; instead riders will have 7.5 hours to complete the 90 km course and 9 hours for the 120 km race. Змагання для любителів і професіоналів (але варто мати гірську шосейну підготовку) – Gran Fondo Ukraine запрошують велосипедистів вирушити сільськими дорогами зі складними підйомами і неймовірними пейзажами. LVIV OPEN ARM-WRESTLING TOURNAMENT 23 June at 11:00 at Malevich Night Club & Concert Arena (2 Chornovola Ave.) Arm-wrestling is a fierce and highly addictive combat sport. So many factors come into play – hand grip size, arm length, sheer strength, and hunger to dominate. After months of training, a battle can be over in just a few seconds, or it can stretch into painful minutes, where muscles ache and breath is short. It’s like a marathon on fast forward. One of the world’s oldest combat sports, arm-wrestling dates to the times of the Pharaohs, where it was used to establish dominance over rivals and entertain royalty. As an organised sport, it only emerged in the mid-20th Century, with the first world championships held in California, USA. By the late 80s, the sport had made its way to Europe, with national federations joining to form the European Arm-Wrestling Federation. The Lviv Open tournament is based on double-elimination, so when a competitor tastes a second humiliating defeat – they are out. Participants will be divided by gender into weight classes and left- and right-hand divisions. Over 200,000 UAH are up for prizes, with the open division winner receiving 15,000 UAH. Entrance fee is to compete is 500 UAH (300 UAH for one hand, 50 UAH for junior). Чорновола, 2) У змаганнях з армрестлінгу один-на-один все має значення – і розмір рук, і їх довжина, їх сила і тактика, і стратегія. Після довгих місяців тренування поєдинок може завершитись всього за кілька секунд, або розтягнутись на довгі хвилини, до болю в м'язах і втрати дихання. Це ніби прискорений у багато разів марафон. Дехто вважає цей вид спорту одним з найстаріших у світі – він згадується ще в часи фараонів, де силачі змагались на потіху можновладців. Як організований спорт, він з'явився лише в середині 20 століття, коли перші чемпіонати світу проходили в Каліфорнії, США. До кінця 80 років спорт прийшов у Європу, а національні федерації об’єднались у Європейську федерацію армрестлінгу. Турнір у Львові проводиться до двох поразок – на виліт. Timur, what prompted you to open branch of law firm in Lviv? There seems to be enough lawyers there… besides that, some other law firms from Kyiv also tried to enter the local market, but encountered significant obstacles. What is the secret to Arzinger’s success? In the early 2000s businesses started to develop actively both in Ukraine and abroad. Moreover, foreign businessmen began to look at Ukraine from a new point of view, with a business interest, taking into account its unique potential: geographic location, natural resources, political and economic situation within the country etc.

The volume of foreign investments in the Ukrainian economy increased significantly, which posed new challenges, first of all, in the consulting sector that always has to keep up with the business. In Ukraine, there was a need for corporate lawyers able to work according to international standards; this was a "requirement" of a client-foreign investor. Thus, legal advisor should have been prepared to support huge and often transnational transactions, to think outside the box and to respond quickly to changes, to efficiently provide services of high quality and to be able to speak with the client the same language: not only to speak foreign languages at the proper level, but also to understand the "language of business", which is sometimes crucial for our work. At that time Ukrainian legal market was at its early stages and many lawyers could know about international standards and complex legal products only from rumors, and were not prepared for such new tasks. And if in Kyiv the supply and demand ratio for such complex legal product balanced fairly quickly, that is, quite a lot of legal advisers adapted to new challenges, in the regions this niche still remained not filled. We understood the potential of Western Ukraine as a region with special investment attractiveness for both Ukrainian and foreign investors. And we also understood that there were no lawyers in the region, who were able to offer the client complex legal product.

We detected clients of our type in business environment of Western Ukraine and decided to be closer to them. This was the driving force behind the decision to open the Western Ukrainian branch. And we made the right bet – for over 10 years we have been successfully providing high-quality legal support to our clients and remain the absolute leader of the regional market according to legal researches and ratings.

How did you manage to get a powerful client base and start serving the major companies in the region? At that time, Arzinger was already a brand, which allowed to gain a lot of clients, who knew about us before and understood the quality level of the legal services offered by company, they gave a credit of trust. However, if to be recognizable in the market is enough to attract the attention of a potential client, it is much harder to keep such client because you have to guarantee the satisfaction from the received product and overcome their expectations. THE EU EASTERN PARTNERSHIP –

ALREADY 10 YEARS On 14 May 2019, Ukraine and the European Union (EU) celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Eastern Partnership with a High-Level Conference in Brussels attended by all its members. Launched on 7 May 2009 as a joint policy initiative between the EU and its Member States, on the one part, and Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, on the other part, the Partnership progressed significantly with the adoption of Association Agreements (AA) between Eastern European and their EU partners, and with the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreements entered into between the EU partners and Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia respectively.

SOME OF THE RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS The aims of the Eastern Partnership have remained unchanged since its creation and relate to building a common area of shared democracy, prosperity, stability and increased cooperation. The members of the Eastern Partnership have detailed specific aims and priority areas of cooperation in due course during the last 10 years. A series of actions have been identified for their delivery in 2020 at the Eastern Partnership Summit of Riga in 2015. As pointed out by the President of the EU Commission at the High-Level Conference, 125.000 loans have been provided to businesses in the

Eastern Partnership. More than 50% of these loans were granted in local currency, which benefits clearly non-EU parties. Globally, the Eastern Partnership countries are by now the EU’s 10th trading partner. AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL, IN 2018, EXPORTS FROM UKRAINE TO THE EU INCREASED BY 8% COMPARED TO 2017 AND UKRAINIAN IMPORTS FROM THE EU BY 10%. 2018 THUS BECAME ANOTHER YEAR OF RECORD HIGH EXPORTS FROM UKRAINE TO THE EU, WHICH REMAINS UKRAINE’S LARGEST TRADING PARTNER WITH 42% OF TOTAL TRADE.

EXPERT OPINION Recent achievements in the EU relations with Ukraine materialize specifically in the already mentioned Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area which became a reality in Ukraine already in September 2017. The four freedoms that characterize the EU model since its inception in 1956 target now also Ukraine’s citizens. To be more precise, the four freedoms relate to the free movement of persons, goods, capital and services within the territories of Ukraine. Free movement of persons materializes in the form of visa-free entry of Ukrainian citizens to the EU for short stays. Visa-free entry of Ukrainian citizens to the EU for short stays is probably the most tangible success of the Eastern Partnership from the national perspective and as such constitutes an extraordinary achievement on both sides. Enormous efforts and specialized expertise are nonetheless still needed in other areas, like the legal approximation process in Ukraine.

This process intends not only to modernize Ukrainian laws and regulations in line with EU, but also, by this same token, international standards, but to maintain a high level of convergence for the Ukrainian legal system as a whole. At present, up to 30 different public bodies of Ukraine are involved in this process. Training of officials constitutes also a need at present for the Ukrainian public administration and the EU provides support for this work program. Accordingly, the legislative roadmap for the implementation of the AA was updated in September 2018 in Ukraine. Legal approximation puts clearly an emphasis on trade-related matters and on other topics contemplated in the AA. Other important outputs include also the Government Action Plan for AA Implementation and a new format for the annual AA Implementation Reports.

AN OUTLOOK TO THE FUTURE But not everything boils down to legal and institution reforms. While the latter reforms fall under the category of implementing reforms to strengthen the rule of law, the judiciary and the fight against corruption, other challenges identified at the HighLevel Conference include, for instance, further protecting the environment and actively tackling climate change, and increasing societal resilience by countering hybrid threats and disinformation. On a different level, supplementary aims relate to strengthening the environment for civil society and a free and independent media, improving the lives of citizens affected by conflicts in the region and, last but not least, finding ways to further increase trade and business opportunities. As a matter of fact, initiatives to support infrastructures in the partner countries will yield not only positive results for their relationship with the EU, but also at the regional level. Reference is made here precisely to programmed investments for the construction or rehabilitation of 4.800 km of roads and railways by 2030 in the framework of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

VISA-FREE ENTRY OF UKRAINIAN CITIZENS TO THE EU FOR SHORT STAYS IS PROBABLY THE M O S T TA N G I B L E S U C C E S S O F T H E E A S T E R N PARTNERSHIP FROM THE NATIONAL PERSPECTIVE AND AS SUCH CONSTITUTES AN EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVEMENT ON BOTH SIDES.

In fact, in the Eastern European Partnership each Eastern European member country remains free to choose the level of cooperation in its relations with the EU in the following areas: • Economic development and market opportunities • Strengthening institutions and good governance • Connectivity, energy, efficiency, environment and climate change • Mobility and people-to-people contact. Thus, it should not be surprising to anyone that Ukraine is sitting in the pilot’s seat for defining the country’s future Eastern Partnership Agenda. The EU does not impose any reform agenda or values onto its six partners countries. Partner countries choose to align with EU standards autonomously, according their own governmental policies and objectives. Hence, it is solely up to the new Ukrainian government to take advantage now of the EU Eastern Partnership initiative.

ONE FINAL REMARK The Eastern Partnership initiative should however be clearly distinguished from EU Accession. Too many persons still believe that there is a link between the Eastern Partnership and EU Accession. This is not the case. Within the aid campaign for Poles in the East she met with Polish families at their residencies and met with children and student, who are studying Polish language. LEOPOLIS GRAND PRIX 2019 The Leopolis Grand Prix, a retro car festival held in Lviv to honour the city’s great motoring past, was held over the 31 May – 2 June weekend. This year’s event celebrated the 85th anniversary of the first Leopolis Grand Prix, held in 1932. The event offered Leopolitan car lovers and guests of the city the great opportunity to see vintage cars on parade, to passionately show their support during the races, and to choose their favourites in the ‘Elegant Driver’ contest, which featured drivers decked out in the era-appropriate

dress of their vehicles. Nearly 120 retro cars from 18 countries took part, which was highlighted by the 2 June Leopolis Grand Prix race around the “Lviv Triangle” (around Stryisky Park). The road, made of basalt pavement blocks, has remained virtually unchanged since the first official Lviv Grand Prix race in the ‘30s. Driving an Alfa Romeo BC-2300, Norwegian champion Eugen Bjornstad set the original track record of 2.02.5 at the 1933 event – and the record remains unbeaten. Better luck next year fellas!

MRS. EASTERN EUROPE 2019 Lviv’s ‘Park. Art of Rest’ leisure complex hosted the finals for the Ms. Eastern Europe 2019 beauty contest on 22 May. The event was organised by Ulyana Oksenyuk – Mrs. Ukraine Universe 2018 – and was themed after ‘Beauty in Action: Business, Parenthood, and Charity’. Mrs. Universe contests are open to married woman between 18-55 that have a family and career and are involved in a charitable cause. The colourful program was filled with performances, a beauty-show, a dance show, and the pageant itself. The finals saw 11 charming ladies show off national outfits, evening gowns, designer dresses, and swimwear, while short films about each participant

and the charity they are involved in were shown on big screens to the audience. Finalists showed their achievements in business and proved that in a modern world, women can successfully combine a professional career, happy motherhood, and unique femininity. 44-year-old Latvian business trainer Liga Garkusha was named the winner. The mother of four has lived in Lviv for the last six years and will now take part in the Mrs. Universe contest in Las Vegas later this month. 36-year-old interpreter and mother of four, Natalie Tropak, was named Mrs. Lviv 2019 and will take part in the Mrs. Europe contest in Spain in October. Congratulations to all the winners!

4th Molokiya Lviv Half Marathon Nearly 3500 participants from all over Ukraine and abroad were in Lviv to participate in the 4th Molokiya Lviv Half Marathon on 9 June. Leopolitan runners and guests of the city raced the 21 km main course as well as the 10 km and 4.2 km races. Besides the thousands of runners that the event attracts every year, business teams also took part in the fun for the 4x 21 km run as well as 4 x 5 km relay. This year Bohdan-Ihor Horodnytskyi won the men’s race with a time of 1:06:46, setting new record for the half marathon, while Olesya Smovzhenko ended up on top of women’s competition with the time of 1:16:54.

Water Polo: Lviv’s Dynamo Wins National Championship Lviv’s SKA sports complex hosted the 2019 Water Polo National Championship on 2 June, which was appropriate as both finalists hailed from Ukraine’s water polo capital. The final saw hometown favourites Dynamo top the Lviv School of Physical Culture 9-6 to claim the national championship. In what has become a Dynamo tradition after winning major tournaments, the overjoyed team tackled popular coach Oleksiy Shvedov right into the pool! Congratulations Dynamo!

4-й львівський півмарафон "Молокія" Близько 3500 учасників з усієї України та з-за кордону прибули до Львова, щоб взяти участь у 4 Львівському півмарафоні 9 червня. Львівські бігуни та гості міста змагались на головній дистанції 21 км а також на дистанціях 10 і 4,2 км. Традиційно щороку тут змагаються тисячі бігунів, а також, бізнес-команди в естафеті 4 х 21 км і 4 х 5 км. Цього року Богдан-Ігор Городницький став чемпіоном серед чоловіків з часом 1:06:46, встановивши новий рекорд півмарафону, а Олеся Смовженко посіла перше місце серед жінок з часом 1:16:54.

Водне поло: Львівські динамівці знову чемпіони! У басейні львівського спортивного комплексу СКА 2 червня відбувся фінал Національного чемпіонату з водному поло 2019 року, що й не дивно, оскільки обидва фіналісти прописані у столиці водного поло України. У фіналі турніру динамівці перемогли команду Львівського університету фізичної культури з рахунком 9:6 і стали чемпіонами вдруге поспіль і вшосте загалом. Dance Sport: Foxtrot Cup 2019 Lviv’s Halychyna Sport Palace played host to the Foxtrot Cup 2019 international ballroom dance competition from on 25–26 May. Organised with the support of Lviv’s ‘Foxtrot’ dance club and the Lviv department of the National Dance Sport Federation, the event attracted over 500 dance couples from across Ukraine and Europe. Lviv's best Athlete of the Month: Zhanna Naumova Young Leopolitan archer Zhanna Naumova was named May’s Athlete of the Month for her performance with the national team at the 2019 European Youth Cup 1st leg held in Catez, Slovenia from 13–18 May. Naumova helped the team capture gold in the Recurve Junior Women’s team event. The 17-yearold has been a member of the national team since 2017 and won bronze at the team at the Junior Indoor World Championships last year in the USA. She also finished 13th at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Congratulations Zhanna!

Dynamo Kyiv midfielder Viktor Tsyhankov got the party started with a brace of goals inside two exhilarating first half minutes, the second coming in spectacular fashion from distance. Ukrainian winger Yevhen Konoplyanka matched this feat in the second half, twice skipping inside from the left flank in trademark fashion before whipping the ball into the far corner of the Serbian net. After Baku (in 2015), I was calmer at all other competitions. It’s a pity that I only took 4th place, as I could have done much better. What are your goals for the 2019 season? I don’t want to make things up. I’m trying to work to the maximum this season. My main goals are the Second European Games and qualifying for the Olympics. You spend a lot of time working with children. How would you convince little girls to start competing in sports like karate? It should be noted that a lot of girls are already participating in karate. This is a sport that allows girls to develop both physically and mentally. Nearly 200 athletes from Ukraine will compete. Why are they important? For some sports, the European Games serves as the 2019 world champions. For others, athletes will have the chance to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Athletes from 10 sports can earn qualification, with Ukrainian athletes poised to earn spots in archery, athletics, boxing, cycling, shooting, and karate. Who should I watch from Lviv? Be sure to catch contenders Kateryna Kryva and Stanislav Horuna go for gold in karate on 29–30 June. Roman Gladysh and Olena Starikova are in top form and looking for medals in cycling from 27–30 June. Pavlo Korostylov is one of the finest young shooters in the world – he’s already qualified for next summer’s Olympic Games. He competes from 22–28 June. What else do I need to know? If you’d like to attend, Belarus has waived the visa requirements for most foreigners from 10 June to 10 July. All you need is to show an event ticket, which range in price from 2 to 20 EUR, and you can enter by land or air borders. The Old Tramway

t is difficult to imagine the city of Lviv without its charming trams. One of the city’s great symbols, its 125-year history is intertwined with the city. From its humble beginnings with its AustroHungarian horse-drawn carriages to the modernization of its electric cars during the Polish Republic, from withstanding the armed foreign invasions during the Second World War to its current, modern European low-floor carriages, Lviv trams have long inspired Leopolitan lovers and artists. Immortalized in song by Lviv’s own “Pikkardiyska Tertsiya”, let’s take a look at how this Lviv institution came to be.

GETTING THROUGH THE WAR

FREE-RIDERS

The Second World War nearly destroyed Lviv’s tram infrastructure, especially during the artillery and bombing of the Soviet assault in September 1939 and the Red Army’s seizure of the city in July 1944. While several lines needed to be closed for service, Lviv’s trams managed to roll on. The post-war years faired no easier for our lovely tramway as the Soviet annexation of the city and its subsequent policy of “population exchanges” between Poland and the Ukrainian Soviet Republic saw fully 80% of the tram’s management exiled to Poland. The city was forced to recruit railway personnel and experts from Eastern Ukraine before fully resuming transport.

Ukraine’s independence in 1991 brought radical change and had a major impact on the country’s tram systems. As huge numbers of private cars and minibuses reduced the need for trams in many cities, trams all but disappeared. For example, Lviv’s trams served nearly 140 million passengers during the year of independence; yet by 2002 this figured had dropped by 60 million (almost half!). While Lviv’s trams still attracted a large amount of customers, the system faced a problem with “free rides”. It is estimated that fully 65% of the riders neglected to pay for their trips, causing a considerable burden on the finances of the company and the government of the Lviv Oblast. Luckily for Leopolitans though, our entire tram network has persevered. Could you possibly imagine Lviv without its trams?

MODERNISING THE NETWORK After years of planning and stalled implementation, Lviv finally launched a tramline to Sykhiv in November 2016. Thanks to the financial support of the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD) and German grants, Lviv’s large residential district to the south now has a fast connection to the city centre. Ukrainian-German company Elektrotrans – based right here in Lviv – provides the newest trams in the network, the sleek Electron model, at the cost of one million Euros a pop. Older models are purchased from Germany or refurbished by Elektrotrans. Look for these to be retrofitted with automatic payment options (to prevent those pesky freeloaders!) soon. Holders of the Lviv City Card, launched just last October, get free rides on the trams. Another step in Lviv becoming Ukraine’s most European centre.

“THE OLD TRAMWAY” HUMBLE HORSE-DRAWN BEGINNINGS By the late 1860s, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire had already launched its first horse-driven trams and Lviv City Council was deliberating its first two tramway proposals. Lviv’s first routes were opened in May 1880, making Lviv only the fourth city in the Empire with a tram. The new transportation proved popular with Leopolitans, as around 1,867,000 passengers were pulled by horsedrawn trams along two separate routes. The system was not ideal though, as the animals were forced to work several hours a day and needed maintenance and care. Moreover, they left a lot behind to clean up. By 1894, Lviv City Council recognized that the horse-drawn trams could not manage passenger flow and while steam-powered trams briefly replaced the horses, it was the advent of the electric current that brought the greatest potential for developing this means of transport.

SWITCHING TO ELECTRIC The electric tram is the brainchild of genius engineer and inventor Werner von Siemens, as it was his company that opened the world’s first tram line between Berlin and Lichterfeld in 1881. The same company built Lviv’s electrical tram infrastructure and a 300 kW power plant to go along with it. Lviv’s electric tram line was launched in May 1894 with a dedication at Stryjsky Park and festivities that attracted many citizens. By 1908, Lviv’s trams were fully electrified.

THE ‘GOLDEN YEARS’ Lviv’s tram enjoyed its ‘Golden Years’ during the 1950s as the tram lines were updated to the trolleybus system and the network became Lviv’s main mode of public transportation. The tram played a great role in the life of Leopolitans, who used it not only to get to and from work, but also a place to make acquaintances and even fall in love. No history of Lviv would be complete without at least one amorous tale from its beloved tram. The 1970s saw some tram lines to the city centre shut down and by 1988, the first fast trams were introduced.

The tram may no longer be the number one choice of transportation in Lviv, but it remains the quintessential way to get around the city. At 5 UAH, it remains the most cost-efficient. The Lviv tramway has remained a constant fixture in the life of Leopolitans through political and military turbulences alike for the last 125 years and remains one of the most recognizable cultural brands of the Western Ukraine capital. Восени у ТЦ Victoria Gardens запрацює перша в Україні екомийка преміум класу Status. Про цей проект детально розповів Lviv Today засновник та ідейний натхненник Тарас Гульчук.

Тарасе, як виникла ідея створення екомийки? Я розпочав свою діяльність у цій сфері у 2015 році, і вже сьогодні ми стали найбільшою автомийною компанією серед портальних мийок (загальна кількість 31). Це автомийки, що працюють при заправках ОККО. Та я давно виношував ідею створення мийки преміум класу. І ось, це здійснилось – ТЦ Victoria Gardens довірив втілити наш проект саме у них. Реалізувати мою мрію мені допомагають партнери Наталія Пишна та Ілля Маковій.

Що означає мийка преміум класу, чим вона відрізняється від звичайної? Переважно таким терміном називають мийки, що мають облаштовану зону відпочинку. Але в нашому випадку ця опція поєднується

Ми будемо використовувати миючі екозасоби від шотландської фірми Angel Wax. Наші оператори пройшли спеціальне навчання від цього виробника та отримали сертифікати.

Як саме можна замовити ваші послуги? На рецепції вас вітатиме адміністратор й допоможе обрати потрібні опції з обслуговування за допомогою сенсорної панелі. А спеціальний мобільний додаток дозволить бронювати послуги та керувати замовленням онлайн. Це дасть змогу обирати персонального оператора-автомийника в зручний для клієнта час. Під час обслуговування ви можете здійснювати шопінг чи розважатись у торговому центрі й забрати своє авто вже зі стоянки для економії часу. Також на мийці Status власники електромобілів

протягом миття можуть скористатися електрозарядкою. Наші клієнти отримають клубні картки та зможуть брати участь у акціях та отримувати приємні подарунки. Навіть про чистоту лапок менших друзів ми подумали – до їх послуг будуть спеціальні порохотяги, паперові килимки, тощо.

Які ваші плани на майбутнє? На сьогодні вже є домовленість про створення першої у Львові автоматизованої мийки, так званого безконтактного порталу. Це швидкісна мийка, що дозволяє надати послугу за 10 хв. Це дуже важливо, адже в сучасному світі успішні люди шанують свій час. Територіально вона теж буде біля ТЦ Victoria Gardens. Наступна екомийка преміум класу буде до послуг львів’ян в ТЦ Спартак. Загалом у планах – створення мережі екомийок Status в Україні. Вони також будуть працювати при торгових центрах для зручності клієнтів. Обслуговування буде на однаково високому рівні, та кожна з мийок буде вирізнятись унікальним дизайном. Адже головне для нас – це задоволений клієнт!
