The 44 Days of Christmas… The holiday season in Ukraine is long, action-packed, and like nowhere else on earth. So get ready for weeks of eating, drinking, and celebrating – Ukrainian-style. While in the West, the 12 Days of Christmas might be little more than an antiquated reminder of days of yore in the face of the modern onslaught of never-ending Christmas commercialism, with all of the celebrating required of Ukrainians during the holiday season, they’d be forgiven for finding the number 12 just a touch quaint. Lying as it does at the crossroads of several worlds – European and Slavic, Catholic and Orthodox, modern and pagan – Lviv remains the perfect crucible for all the traditions to come together. This might explain why the holiday season in Ukraine is so long, and so jam-packed. But really, if you’re fortunate enough to be in the country during this time of year – there is no other place in the world that celebrates the holidays quite like Ukraine. Double the Fun Lying at the crossroads of civilisations has its advantages. Hundreds of years ago Lviv first prospered by acting as a trading post along the Spice Road between the East and West. Nowadays, perhaps the clearest reminder is that Ukrainians, during the holiday season follow two calendars – the Gregorian and the Julian. This is one reason why the holiday season lasts so long – some Ukrainians follow the Gregorian calendar, like those in the Western world; others follow the Julian calendar, like much of the Slavic world. So for some Ukrainians, the holiday season begins with St. Nicholas Day on December 6th, like in Europe. For others, it falls on December 19th, like in Belarus and Serbia. Ditto for Christmas (December 25th & January 7th) and New Year’s (December 31st & January 13th). Like a step-child that celebrates Christmas with both her parents, Ukraine doubles the fun by celebrating each day twice. The More the Merrier Ukraine is a country that knows how to celebrate. Throughout the year there are days to celebrate your name, your city, and even your occupation. There are also special days to mark religious, communist, and even pagan traditions. The Christmas season is no different. When the country

converted to Christianity in the 9th-Century, pagan beliefs were so widespread that instead of rooting out the practices, early missionaries allowed for pagan and Christian doctrine to be mixed. This means that today, in addition to the many religious holiday celebrations, a number have their roots in pagan festivities. Yet Ukraine is also a modern country, and has adopted some of the more popular modern traditions, including Christmas trees and Santa Claus. So in Ukraine, you can see a wheat sheaf (didukh) – a traditional Ukrainian symbol of the holidays – in the same living room as a Christmas tree, and it could be either St. Nicholas, Did Moroz (Grandfather Frost) or Santa Claus that brings the gifts. Lviv – the Grand Melting Pot of Christmas Traditions Looking through the pages of this month’s Lviv Today, you can get a taste of the variety that Lviv has to offer over the holiday season. There are festivals like Blaze of the Christmas Star and the Pampukh Holiday, old-fashioned Ukrainian carolling concerts and modern pop stars in holiday-themed shows, and there is the spectacular Christmas tree (yalinka) in front of the Opera & Ballet Theatre (be sure to look for the spider web – check out our story on this totally unique Ukrainian tradition) and there is the festive Christmas parade that winds along Lviv’s cobblestone streets on January 7th. The parade, in fact, is a large version of a popular tradition of holiday house-to-house carolling in Ukraine. The tradition is wonderfully representative of the holidays in Ukraine. A group of young men and women go house-to-house to perform a Christmas play. While the play is usually centred around the Christian nativity story, a goat will always be present; the goat, of course, representing the pagan god of fertility. The same play might also feature Did Moroz and Santa Claus, the grim reaper and an angel, and Angela Merkel and Yuliya Tymoshenko. East and west, pagan and religious, traditional and contemporary – the holidays in Ukraine have it all. Christmas Season in Lviv It is easy to see why the holiday season is considered to be the most wonderful time of the year. The sound of Christmas carols echoing down the street, the smell of cookies and other sweets wafting through the air, delightful gifts nestled underneath wonderfully decorated Christmas trees – there is simply no better time of the year! It’s all the more special to celebrate this time of year here in Western Ukraine’s Christmas capital. Make your holiday season all the more extraordinary by checking out some of these must-see holiday celebrations. Is there a better place to begin your holiday adventure and get into the Christmas spirit than at Lviv’s yalinka (City Christmas Tree)? The focal point of Christmas celebrations across the country, each city has its own. And Lviv’s is impressive – decorated with hundreds of lights and located directly in front of the city’s picturesque Opera House, there simply is no alternative for a traditional Leopolitan holiday picture. As local businesses across the city get into the holiday spirit, join the endless flow of tourists at one of the city’s many cafés and restaurants and discover your favourite traditional holiday dish. Christmas shopping in Lviv can be an absolute joy. From litup trade malls to Christmas markets dotting the cobblestone corners – there is no shortage of places to pick up all of your gifts and souvenirs. The best place to start at is Lviv’s biggest Christmas fair, which will run from December 12 – January 17. Let the sweet aromas of traditional Cossack honeys, soft gingerbread and hearty bratwurst lure you to the wooden chalets conveniently located along the main boulevard from the Yalynka to the Shevchenko monument and around central Rynok Square. All kinds of festive foods, gifts, and treats are to be found on your arrival! As always, Christmas season in Lviv offers up many interesting traditional and contemporary Christmas festivals, including the always popular Blaze of the Christmas Star. Preserving an ancient tradition, this festival sees Ukrainians make large (1.5-2 metre) Christmas stars that serve as the main symbols for the festivities. The event will be held at the Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life (1 Chernecha Hora St.) on January 7th and in the City Centre (Rynok Sq., Prospekt Svoboda, St. George Sq.) on January 8th. Fans of holiday music will not want to miss the Great Carol (Velyka Kolyada) concert in January at the St. Eucharist Church (3 Museina Sq.). The internationally famous ‘Carol of the Bells’ (Shchedryk), initially a Ukrainian folk song, will be sure to be among the traditional Ukrainian songs, customs, and carols to be featured. A more recent addition to the advent calendar is the tasty Pampukh’s Holiday! This annual event, returning for its ninth season from January 7-11, offers Leopolitans and guests of the city the chance to learn about these tasty Christmas donuts. Festivalgoers will get to learn the history of this popular Christmas dish, discover how they are made, and – of course – taste the different kinds of pampukhs. If you’re looking for something a little more active, why not head over to Rynok Square’s gorgeous open-air ice rink. Little Leopolitans and guests of the city that need some support on the ice can lean on one of the instructors, who will gladly help new skaters of any age. Don’t worry if you left your skates at home – you can always rent a pair directly at the rink. A great way to defrost afterwards is with a steaming mug of hot chocolate and cake in any one of the adjoining coffeehouses. Another popular activity is trekking to the top of High Castle (Vysoky Zamok). The park area is great for building snowmen and at 413 metres above sea level, the scenic viewpoint at the top offers a simply stunning panorama of festive Lviv. Just be sure to bring some hot gluhwein with you to keep you warm at the top!

Усі співають колядки, над містом линуть запахи найсмачнішого печива, мандаринок і ялинок - традиції свята займають особливе місце в серці кожного. До Львова на свята традиційно прибудуть тисячі гостей з усіх усюд, хто вперше, хто вдесяте – але все одно з задоволенням і приємними спогадами. Пориньте в цю атмосферу свята під чудовою величезною ялинкою, яка горітиме сотнями різнобарвних вогнів на площі перед Оперним театром. Навіть якщо ви ніколи не замислювалися про кар'єру у фігурному катанні, безумовно, варто спробувати хоча б раз, і чому не в цьому сезоні? Традиційно цей святковий сезон пропонує до уваги львів’ян і гостей міста чимало цікавих подій, як от фестиваль "Світло різдвяної зірки", який оновлює давню українську традицію робити велику (1,5–5 метри) різдвяну зірку, основний символ свята. З такими саморобними зірками (які ще можуть світитись зсередини) учасники фестивалю ходитимуть в Музеї народної архітектури та побуту (вул. Чернеча гора, 1) 7 січня та вулицями Львова 8 січня в центрі міста (пл. Ринок, пр. Свободи, пл. св. Юра). Інший традиційний фестиваль – "Велика Коляда", під час якого можна буде почути безліч старовинних і сучасних колядок у виконанні професійних й аматорських творчих колективів, проходитиме протягом січня в домініканському соборі (пл. Музейна). Традиційне львівське Свято пампуха відбудеться 7-11 січня, де ласуни усіх країн об’єднаються, щоб на власні очі побачити й запам’ятати (щоб повторити у себе вдома) як виготовляються ці смачні ласощі, познайомитись з їх рецептами та історією, і неодмінно скуштувати усі (або майже всі) види пампухів. Різдвяні закупи у Львові можуть принести багато задоволення і дітям і дорослим. Від прикрашених святковою ілюмінацією торгових центрів до невеличких святкових базарів – усюди ви можете вибрати подарунки та сувеніри для друзів, родичів та знайомих. І, звичайно ж, не забудьте відвідати найбільший різдвяний ярмарок Львова, який розташується з 12 грудня 2015 р. до 17 січня 2016 року на алеї від Оперного театру до пам'ятника Т. Year of the Monkey Exhibition From January 20th,16:00 at the Hurshevsky Jazz Improvisation Cinema (28 Shevchenka Ave.) Lviv’s legendary Hrushevsky Jazz Improvisation Cinema will play host to a unique exhibition dedicated to the upcoming Year of the Monkey beginning from January 20th. In China, the Year of the Monkey is considered to be ideal for a quantum leap forward in life! It offers the opportunity to shake things up, create change, and begin a new life path. In many Chinese cities, pictures of monkeys are placed to invite good fortune. Organised by the Lviv Art Doll Club, the exhibition presents over 20 celebrities in

comical images of monkeys. Exhibition-goers will be able to enjoy the likes of singers Svyatoslav Vakarchuk and Jamala, athletes like Olympic champion Oleksandr Usyk, or even politicians like Yulia Tymoshenko or Lviv’s-own mayor Andriy Sadovyi, all in the form of a monkey doll – monkeys are, after all, considered to be a very clever animal. MALANKA (OLD NEW YEAR) January 13–14, Right Across Ukraine! Ukrainians are known for hosting wild and jovial celebrations and among the most popular holidays in winter is Malanka (Preberia) on January 13/14. Also known as Old New Year, it’s a special celebration in the old Ukrainian style, featuring national humour and spontaneous joviality. Celebrations and traditions differ from region to region, but the day remains full of entertainment, lavish merrymaking, and public enjoyment, making for a true carnival atmosphere. There was a time when Malanka was celebrated in virtually every small town and village in Ukraine, but nowadays only a few places retain the traditional celebrations. Among the most interesting and spectacular celebrations are those held in the town of Vashkivtsi in Bukovyna, which is considered the capital of Malanka merriment. The term ‘Malanka’ is actually taken from ancient Ukrainian folklore where romantic yarns tell of a girl named Malanka that marks the coming of spring. Indeed, despite the usual sub-zero weather that generally accompanies the holiday, it isn’t unknown for locals to jump into freezing water to ‘drown their troubles’ and bring good luck in the coming year. We could go on telling rich and entertaining stories about wild Malanka celebrations, but it is so much more interesting to experience the event yourself. Malanka celebrations, like so many other Ukrainian traditions, enhance the traveler’s experience and require visitors to step off the beaten tourist path and take the road less traveled into the mysticism that is rural Ukraine.

МАЛАНКА, АБО СТАРИЙ НОВИЙ РІК 13–14 січня по всій Україні Українці, як відомо, люблять і вміють святкувати, і одним з найпопулярніших зимових свят є Маланка, (Переберія), в ніч з 13 на 14 січня. Це особливе свято, також відоме як Старий Новий рік, сповнене гумору, веселощів і радості. Вигляд і масштаби святкування, особливо на вулицях міст і сіл, відрізняються залежно від місцевості, але всюди веселяться нестримно, зокрема, кепкуючи й жартуючи з тих, хто «прославився» минулого року в житті громади, у веселій карнавальній атмосфері. Були часи, коли «Маланку» святкували практично в кожному містечку і селі в Україні, але тепер залишилось лише кілька таких місць, де збереглась ця традиція. Серед найцікавіших і найяскравіших варто відзначити святкування в містечку Вашківці на Буковині, яке вважається столицею «Маланки». Іменини Маланки (Меланії) в календарі відзначають 13 січня, а саме святкування сягає корінням ще в язичницькі часи і знаменує прихід весни. Незважаючи на справжні зимові морози, які зазвичай супроводжують це свято, ще ніхто з місцевих хлопців, перебраних за Маланку не захворів після купання у крижаній воді під вечір 14 січня – навпаки, вважається, що це допомагає змити з себе всі проблеми та печалі й приносить удачу в наступному році. Про веселе святкування можна розповідати довго, але набагато цікавіше побачити все це на власні очі. id you know that the Galician capital was already a popular winter sports destination by the 1910s? For example, figure skating was already well-established by the end of the 19th-Century thanks to the efforts of the Lviv Skating Association (LSA) and the Sokol Ukrainian-Polish Gymnastic Association.

The LSA began to teach ice skating at Panienski Pond dating back from January 1874. Panienski Pond was a popular place for Leopolitans to skate and attracted large audiences that skated late into the evening. Stanislaw Sztylinksi, a member of the local police and gymnastics teacher at Sokol, was the LSA’s first instructor and helped organise events, including Lviv’s first ice skating competition in 1874. By the following winter season, many changes were noted. A Christmas programme complete with military band was added, afternoon skating lessons were offered, and free public skates were launched. Even better – the LSA Board was entrusted to run the buffet with drinks and sweets from Lviv’s finest confectioneries! The LSA remained the only skating organiser in the area until the mid-1880s. In addition to the public skating that took place from late November to early March, the LSA organised great performances on the ice in the form of festivals. For example, back in 1884, the city welcomed a ‘Medieval Tournament’ to the ice! As the sun went down in the late afternoon, electric lights were lit that attracted many spectators. In the middle of the ice was a giant ship, around which skaters with torches – dressed in medieval costuming – circled around. A “polar bear” hunt tournament followed, and of course the military band. According to reports at the time, the tournament was great and the skaters were “greatly applauded for their full of elegance skating”.

At the time, outfits for girls that like to skate consisted of a bodice, a long skirt, and a hat; they were introduced at the beginning of the 20th-Century and didn’t change for many decades. Men also wore conservative outfits, including coats, medium-to-long pants, and skates. At first, the sport only attracted Lviv’s elite – it was even impossible to purchase skates in the city until well into the 20th-Century. Skate blades just had to be attached directly to shoes or boots. Thankfully for Leopolitan lovers of skating, this changed in the 1920s when three stores opened in Lviv’s city centre offering a wide variety of wooden skates. Metal skates with thin blades appeared in the 1960s. Obviously, Leopolitans benefitted from the many rinks available on local ponds, but only the LSA organised public skating – both Panienski Pond and Pelczynski Pond. Over the years, the LSA organised many skating festivals, masquerades, and competitions. They were popular places to be on holidays, as they were presented in artificial light with the backing of a military band, which made for a sensational Galician winter experience. SOCIETY City Council Deputies Take Oath The first session of the newly elected Lviv City Council was held on November 24th. Lasting less than an hour, the meetings saw the newly elected deputies take an oath to serve in the best interests of Ukraine. The text was read out by council’s eldest deputy – Yuiry Kuzhelyuk, representative of party “Hromadska pozytsia”. The new council features 64 deputies – down from 90 – and includes now 3rd-term mayor Andriy Sadovyi. To congratulate mayor on his first day came many Leopolitans including mayor’s spouse and mother.

Депутати міської ради прийняли присягу Перша сесія новообраної Львівської міської ради відбулась 24 листопада. На засіданні, що тривало менше години, новообрані депутати склали присягу служити народу України. Текст присяги зачитав найстарший депутат Юрій Кужелик, представник партії "Громадська позиція". Новообрана міська рада складатиметься з 64 депутатів, що значно менше, ніж було раніше – 90. Також урочисту присягу склав заново обраний мер Андрій Садовий, який посів цей пост вже втретє. Привітати мера у перший день його нового терміну прийшли багато львів’ян, у тому числі дружина і мати А. Садового.

Ukrainian President Pays Working Visit to Lviv Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko paid a working visit to Lviv on November 14th to meet with Slovenian President Borut Pahor and discuss the security situation in Europe, particularly in the context of the recent terror attacks in Paris. Mr. Poroshenko also took part in a ceremony at the International Peacekeeping Centre in Yavoriv where the Armed Forces of Ukraine received U.S. radar stations. The President also found time to meet with personnel at the Canine Training Centre (CTC) of the State Board Guard Service. He emphasised that the CTC plays a significant role in helping protect Ukraine’s borders from the importation of prohibited goods. Detector dogs are used for their unobtrusive and non-discriminatory screening capabilities and are able to screen large volumes of people and goods quickly and efficiently. They are an important compliment to other screening technologies, such as x-ray and trace particle detection. Finally, the President caught the European Championship Qualifying playoff match at Arena Lviv, which saw Ukraine defeat the visitors 2:0 on their way to qualifying for this summer’s EURO 2016 in France.

У ході візиту Президент зустрівся з президентом Словенії Борутом Пахором і обговорив ситуацію безпеки в Європі, зокрема, в контексті недавніх трагічних подій в Парижі. Також П. Порошенко взяв участь у церемонії передачі американських радіолокаційних станцій Збройним Силам України. Церемонія пройшла в міжнародному миротворчому центрі на Яворівському полігоні. У другій половині дня президент зустрівся з персоналом кінологічного навчального центру Державної прикордонної служби України. Президент підкреслив, що кінологічний навчальний центр відіграє важливу роль у наданні допомоги для захисту кордонів України, зокрема, від ввезення заборонених товарів. Собаки-шукачі використовуються для непомітної вибіркової перевірки осіб та вантажів, що перетинають державний кордон України. Добре навчені собаки здатні перевіряти велику кількість людей і товарів швидко й ефективно. Вони чудово доповнюють високотехнологічні засоби, встановлені в пунктах перетину кордону, такі, зокрема, як рентген чи детектор слідів часток. The event aimed to generate interest in Lviv as an attractive investment destination and provided information to those looking invest right now.

Classic for Peace The INSO-Lviv Academic Youth Symphony Orchestra played a special ‘Classic for Peace’ concert at Kyiv’s prestigious Taras Shevchenko National Opera & Ballet Theatre on November 15th. The event was organised by the Belgium embassy and the Lviv Philharmonic Theatre to mark the Belgian holiday King’s Day. Each November 15th since 1866, Belgium has celebrated King’s Day to mark its linguistic, political, and cultural diversity. This year’s events were meant to show that intercultural understanding and acceptance are vital for peace and sustainable development. The ‘Classic for Peace’ concert represents a peaceful response to the violence in both Paris and Ukraine, and was dedicated to all the victims of terrorism around the world.“The title speaks for itself – Classic for Peace”, says conductor and composer Dirk Brossé, “It is a symbol of understanding between people of different cultures and nationalities that contributes to [the] further spreading of peace and mutual goodwill [and] strengthening the ties of friendship.” The “Classic for Peace” concert was a unique opportunity to enjoy music conducted by the Maestro Brossé and performed by the Academic Symphony Orchestra “INSO-Lviv.” The program included works of Dirk Brossé and Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council (2010-2014). The concert also featured talented soloists Artem Shmahaylo (Ukraine) and soprano Hanne Roos (Belgium).

"День Короля" святкується в Бельгії 15 листопада з 1866 року і символізує єдність бельгійської нації в її мовному, політичному й культурному розмаїтті. Останні події у світі показують, що міжкультурне порозуміння і терпимість є життєво важливими для миру й сталого розвитку. Програма "Classic for Peace" є мирною відповіддю на насильство в Парижі і Україні, присвячена всім

жертвам терору в світі. Дірк Броссе, диригент і композитор говорить, – "назва концерту говорить сама за себе – класики за мир. Це символ взаєморозуміння між людьми різних культур і національностей, що сприяє подальшому поширенню миру і взаємної доброї волі, зміцнення дружби між народами". Lviv Nights Once again night owls from across the city painted the town red under a wonderful moonlit Leopolitan sky as the popular Lviv Nights festival returned to the city from December 4-6. From its inception, the Lviv Nights program has garnered plenty of well-deserved attention and recognition and has now become one of the single-most anticipated tourist draws in Lviv. Leopolitans and guests of the city had plenty to choose from, as over 100 establishments stayed open until the wee hours to give the Western Ukrainian capital a festive buzz to kick off the holiday season. One of the festival’s most popular draws was the Mysteries & Masterpieces of the Bandinelli Palace theatrical excursion. The glorious palace was opened after an extensive restoration especially for Lviv Nights. Participants learned about the incredible history of the 400-year-old Bandinelli Palace. It was purchased in 1634 by Florentine merchant Roberto Bandinelli who, in addition to giving the building its moniker, also founded the first post office in Eastern Galicia. Soviet authorities gave the house to the Lviv Historical Museum, after which the building was thoroughly restored. Another highlight of the festival was the chance for children to visit St. Nicholas’ residence. Festively opened at the Kavalier Boutique Hotel on Dec. 4th, kids and adults alike could feel the spirit of Christmas in the air while exploring the fairytale house and chatting with St. Nicholas himself. And what did Old St. Nick have to say to the children? “If you are honest and respectful all year long, I can make the most fantastic wishes come true!”

Учасники цієї захоплюючої екскурсії вислухали розповідь про палац Бандінеллі, який побудував у 1589 році фармацевт Ярош Ведельскі, а в 1634 році його купив флорентійський купець Роберто Бандінеллі, відомий як засновник першої поштової контори у Східній Галичині. Після другої світової війни будинок був переданий львівському історичному музею, який капітально відремонтував і реставрував цю споруду. Найцікавішим для дітей було відвідування львівської резиденції Святого Миколая, яка урочисто відкрилась 4 грудня у приміщенні готелю Kavalier Boutique. Діти й дорослі могли відчути атмосферу Різдва в казковому будинку і побалакати із самим Миколаєм, який стверджує, що може здійснити найфантастичніші бажання. With a Scandinavian Flavour authentic look and taste of a dish. I mean that cooks will try to use local goods, adapting them to their own cooking style. For Ukraine, it is still coming – work on the quality and accuracy of food production technologies still needs improvement. The more entrepreneurs that understand this, the better the country’s restaurants will be. Is there a special Lent menu at the restaurant? Do you have any vegetarian dishes? The restaurant’s menu offers many dishes for those that are fasting. As any fasting menu should be well-balanced, guests can choose from salads without meat, light appetisers, and fish dishes. Panorama also offers a delightful Christmas menu. How often does the restaurant change the menu? Are there any “Chef’s Specials” on the menu? Speaking about the menu, I can assure you that the whole menu is the “Chef’s Special” as it was personally created by the Head Chef! In my opinion, all dishes should not only be created, but also personally prepared, by the Head Chef.

The illustrious Panorama restaurant – located on the 7th floor of Lviv’s Panorama Hotel overlooking the city’s spectacular Opera & Ballet Theatre – recently welcomed their new Head Chef: Mr. Gints Osis. Hailing from the Latvian capital of Riga, the new chef brings a touch of exquisite Scandinavian flavour to the restaurant’s already delicious Mediterranean menu. Lviv Today recently sat down with the city’s newest big-name chef. LT: How did your cooking career begin? I became interested in the profession at an early age, in kindergarten even, when I tried to steal some pork chops from the cooks. (laughs) When I was in first grade and was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I honestly answered “a cook”. During the summers, starting from third grade, I worked in the kitchen – peeling potatoes and onions, washing dishes, etc. After I finished secondary school, I began my professional education as a culinary technologist. After graduating, I found work at some of Latvia’s finest restaurants. What does cooking mean to you? Are there some boundaries, or is there room to fulfil your cooking fantasies? Of course there are certain rules when cooking dishes! However, it is a kind of mixture of fantasy and taste. The culinary field is the type of art where the cook is the artist and his perception is the key factor. The most important thing is the authenticity of the taste, as food should be perceived by all senses.

Your menu offers many exquisite dishes. Could you tell us which ones deserve special attention? Which are your best? Creating the perfect menu is a work in progress, as there are always new ideas and technologies popping up, so it is difficult to pick something special. Considering that I’m from a Baltic state, I would say that I like cooking fish. I am sure that future guests at Panorama will have the chance to taste more fish dishes alongside even more Scandinavian plates, but let us not ruin the surprise. How often do you use Ukrainian goods while cooking? Surely we use some Ukrainian goods, but they are mostly produced following Western technologies. We buy meat abroad, as the quality of local meats still needs improvement; same with fish. It is possible to work with the local market, but there is always some instability to it. Let us talk about culinary trends. In the past, many cooks were fascinated with molecular cuisine. What is the popular trend today? New culinary trends appear all the time. Somewhere in the world some trend is a novelty, while in another place it is already a well-forgotten thing. Presently there is a tendency to unite various styles while preserving the

Can you give a piece of advice to someone that is inviting someone home to dinner for the first time? Some tips for a “romantic dinner” operation? On such an occasion, the last thing to worry about is the food! (laughing) A few main tips – the food should be light and delicate, with minimum alcohol – maybe just some wine. The most important thing is that both should feel comfortable and the evening will definitely be fine! What are your interests besides work? The Head Chef profession is not one that leaves you with very much free time. However, when I do have some, I like to spend it with my family somewhere outside of the city. I am fond of fishing and just love the mountains and taking walks in the forest. I like calm, relaxing leisure, where there is no need to hurry. And finally, here is the traditional question about your plans for the future? And I also have a traditional answer – I have grand plans! I would like to use more high-quality goods from local producers and give more emphasis to Scandinavian cuisine, fish dishes, and forest foods. Він приїхав до Львова зі столиці Латвії, Риги, і тепер середземноморська кухня, якою віддавна славиться “Панорама”, отримала дещо скандинавський присмак. Про це та інше ми сьогодні поспілкувалися із новим шеф-кухарем “Панорами” Гінтсом Осісом. LT: Як починалась ваша кар’єра кухаря? Зацікавленість цією професією з’явилася у мене ще в дитячому садку, коли я пробував поцупити котлети в кухарів (сміється – авт.) А в першому класі, коли мене запитували, ким я хочу стати, я відповідав, що кухарем. Із третього класу на літніх канікулах почав працювати на кухні – чистити картоплю і цибулю, мити посуд. Після середньої школи розпочалося професійне навчання на кулінарного технолога. Після закінчення працював у кращих латвійських ресторанах. Скажіть, будь ласка, готувати – це для Вас перш за все певні рамки, канон, якого слід дотримуватися, чи скоріше простір для втілення кухарської фантазії? Звичайно, є певні закони приготування страв, але здебільшого це політ фантазії і поєднання смаку. На мою думку, кулінарія – це певний вид мистецтва, де бачення кухаря, як художника, є ключовим та основне – це натуральність смаку, адже їжа повинна сприйматися всіма. У вашому меню чимало вишуканих страв, але які з них заслуговують особливої уваги? Чи є страви, які у вас виходять найбільш вдало? Робота над меню ніколи не завершується, завжди є нові ідеї і технології приготування невпинно йдуть уперед, тому важко щось виділити, але оскільки я із Прибалтики, то мені подобається працювати з рибою. Впевнений, що у найближчому майбутньому гості ресторану матимуть змогу скуштувати більше рибних та інших скандинавських страв, але нехай це залишиться інтригою… LVIV TODAY | December 2015

Як часто використовуєте українські продукти при приготуванні страв? Так, ми використовуємо деякі українські продукти, але переважно вони вирощені за західними технологіями. М’ясо ми купуємо закордоном, тому що над якістю м’яса тут ще працювати і працювати, це саме стосується і риби. З місцевим ринком працювати можна, але тут спостерігається деяка непостійність. Давайте поговоримо про тренди в кулінарії. Раніше всі кухарі захоплювалися молекулярною кухнею, а що зараз на піку популярності? Нові тренди в кулінарії з’являються постійно, десь у світі це новинка, а в іншому місці про це вже забули. Зараз все більше намагаються об’єднати різні стилі і при тому не забувати про натуральний смак і вигляд страви. Я це веду до того, що кухарі стараються використовувати локальні продукти, адаптуючи під свій стиль приготування. В Україні все ще попереду – робота над якістю і правильністю технологій вирощування продуктів. Чим більше стане підприємців, котрі це зрозуміють, тим якіснішою в країні стане ресторанна культура. Чи є в ресторані страви пісного меню, зокрема під час посту? Що можете запропонувати для вегетаріанців?

Захоплююсь риболовлею, люблю гори та піші прогулянки по лісі. Найбільше подобається спокійний, виважений вид відпочинку, коли не потрібно нікуди спішити. І наостанок традиційне питання: про плани на найближче майбутнє? На це питання у мене також традиційна відповідь – грандіозні. Дуже хочеться в майбутньому більше використовувати якісні продукти місцевого виробництва, а ще хотілось би торкнутися скандинавської кухні, рибних страв із різними дарами лісу. Ресторан «Панорама» гостинно запрошує вас познайомитись з новим шеф-кухарем та оцінити смак його кулінарних шедеврів.

У нашому меню можна знайти страви для тих, хто дотримується посту. В піст меню повинно бути збалансованим, тому ви можете обрати для себе салати без м’яса, закуски або легкі рибні страви. Також у “Панорамі” гостей буде тішити особливе різдвяне меню. Чи часто оновлюється меню? Чи практикуєте ви “Страви від шефа”? Якщо взяти меню, то можна сказати, що все меню від шефа, оскільки його створював шеф-кухар! Я схиляюся до того, що страви повинні бути не тільки придумані, а й приготовані шефом! Порадьте, що приготувати, скажімо, коханій людині, вперше запрошуючи його/її до себе додому? Як провести операцію «Романтична вечеря»? У такий вечір про їжу, на мою думку, думають найменше! LVIV social Проект “Спеціальна олімпіада – Львів”

На даний момент найважливішій напрямок діяльності Андрія Породко це розвиток спорту для людей з особливими потребами. Основною метою у цьому напрямку є те, щоб кожна дитина чи молода людина з особливими потребами могла вільно займатися спортом у будь-якій спортивній школі чи клубі міста, не шукаючи собі приватних тренерів. З цією метою ним було засновано проект “Спеціальна Олімпіада- Львів” якій діє в рамках всесвітнього руху Спеціальних Олімпіад. На премії “Люди Львова 2015” проект "Спеціальна Олімпіада – Львів" навіть був відзначений як краща соціальна ініціатива року. Починаючи з 2010 року проектом було фінансово та морально підтримано безліч заходів, які дали змогу українським та перед усім, львівськім дітям, прийняти участь у змаганнях в рамках руху Спеціальні Олімпіади, як в Україні - змагання з бадмінтону у Київі, всеукраїнський турнір по футболу у Херсоні, так і за кордоном в Польщі, Греції, Південній Кореї, Бельгії та США. Серед важливих досягнень проекту треба назвати організацію таких заходів в рамках руху Спеціальних Олімпіад, як перший обласний фестиваль спорту проведений у 2013 році, перші міжнародні змагання з плавання для 70 учасників з України та Польщі проведені також у 2013 році, а також перші у Львові Special Olympics Open Games у 2014 році, які зібрали більш ніж 200 учасників з Польщі та України, які змагалися у 4 видах спорту: футбол, флорбол, плавання, настільний теніс. А вже цього року у були проведені другі Special Olympics Open Games у Львові з 350 учасниками з

Польщі, Литви, Латвії, Данії, Румунії та 18 областей України, та розширеною програмою змагань з п`ять видів спорту: футбол, флорбол, плавання, настільний теніс, об’єднаний баскетбол. Це були найбільші змагання за всю історію України для дітей та молоді з вадами розумового розвитку. Виключно завдяки наполегливій праці та шаленому ентузіазму Андрія та його команди проекту тільки за останні роки було організовано декілька десятків змагань з різних видів спорту, а також низка унікальних за своїм змістом семінарів за програмою Спеціальних Олімпіад, проведених вперше в Україні - семінар з каякінгу, (проводила семінар розробник світової програми з каякінгу Роза Банасік-Заранська (Польща)), семінар з плавання у відкритій воді, (проводила семінар Марина Дворак (Україна), семінар з бочча (проводила семінар Надія Страздіна (Латвія) та семінарів для батьків, що виховують дітей з особливими потребами та організацій що працюють в цій сфері. Львівські діти завжди гідно представляли свій край та Україну на закордонних змаганнях, про що свідчать результати:

Приємним особистим досягненням команди проекту можна вважати такий факт, що як міська, так і регіональна адміністрація нарешті звернули увагу на рух Спеціальних Олімпіад та не одноразово відзначали дітей спеціальними преміями-стипендіями, а тренерів грошовими нагородами та подяками.

Надія на майбутнє

Андрій впевнений що у житті нічого не відбувається просто так, усе має якесь значення. “Можете допомогти хворим дітям у лікарнях – допоможіть. Можете допомогти і підтримати хлопців та дівчат у сиротинцях – зробіть це щонайшвидше! Завжди пам’ятайте: будьякі ваші проблеми рано чи пізно минуть. Треба перетерпіти – терпіть. Треба зачекати – зачекайте. Не впадайте у відчай. Нині – сум, завтра – радість. Ніколи не нарікайте на життя! Цінуйте кожен прожитий день! Робіть якомога більше добра щодня – і будете щасливими!” Діяльність проекту стала можливою завдяки підтримці людей та підприємств Львова, які стали надійними партнерами та особистими друзями. Man of Action, Man of Hope Andriy Porodko is at the same time the Director of the SAMI charitable organisation, Head of the organising committee of Charitable Lvivshyna, a member of the Ukrainian Benefactors Association, a caring father, and simply a very positive person. He understands full well the value of life, as he managed to beat a serious oncological disease early in life. That is why he dedicates himself so wholeheartedly to children in Lviv and the region. Andriy helps many children at orphanages and boarding schools. He arranges art therapy workshops for children with leukemia, organises festivals, and brings to life many different social projects and initiatives to help children in need. Many students at Lviv’s specialised boarding schools are grateful to Andriy for the always entertaining Special Olympics sports competition and the Lutyn youth social festival. Andriy began his active involvement in social projects in 2009 when he founded the SAMI charitable organisation. He began supporting Lviv’s Horihovyi Hay Park in 2012 and took charge of the Lviv Cinema Centre this past year. For all of his work in social initiatives, Andriy Porodko has been recognised with many certificates of merit, acknowledgements, and honorary diplomas by the Mayor of Lviv, the Lviv City Council, the Lviv Oblast administration, and other officials. He also consistently tops the rankings of ‘Most Active Leopolitans’ conducted by various local media.

Special Olympics

Perhaps the most important of Porodko’s many notable activities is his support for the development of sports for people with special needs. He strives to see the day when children and youth with special needs can attend sports clubs or schools without the need for private coaches. Andriy organises trips abroad for these children, so that they can take part in Special Olympics competitions in other countries. Special Olympics – Lviv is a highly respected organisation and was recognised as the Best Social Initiative of the Year at the People of Lviv 2015 awards ceremony. The Special Olympics – Lviv project, which arranges numerous activities and events that promote sport among children and youth with mental disabilities, started back in 2010. Thanks to its efforts, dozens of children have taken part in various national and international competitions, including a badminton competition in Kyiv, a football tournament in Kherson, and international competitions in Poland, Greece, South Korea, Belgium, and the USA. It’s possible that the most important achievement, however, was hosting the first regional sports festival in 2013. Over 70 participants from Ukraine and Poland travelled to the city to take part in swimming competitions. The event led to Lviv’s first ever Special Olympics Open Games in 2014, which attracted over 200 participants competing in 4 events: football, swimming, table tennis, and floorball. This year’s Games saw 350 participants from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Denmark, and Romania join Ukrainian representatives in a 5-sport programme, with joint basketball added to last year’s events. This became the biggest competition ever held in Western Ukraine for children and youth with mental disabilities. Thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of Andriy and his project team, dozens of competitions were organised in various sports. In addition, they introduced Ukraine’s first series of seminars showcasing the program of the global Special Olympics movement. Sessions included: kayaking, hosted by Polish specialist Roza Banasik-Zaranska; open water swimming by Chervonograd-native Maryna Dvorak; and bocce, hosted by Latvia’s Nadiya Strazdina. Seminars were also held for parents of special needs children, as well as for representatives from other interested organisations. Leopolitan children have always proudly and successfully represented our region and Ukraine in

general at these competitions, as can be clearly seen by the results: • International swimming competition (Riga, Latvia): 2 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze; • Gothia Cup (Sweden): silver medal; • Jubileuszowych Pomorska regata kajakowa Olimpiad Specjalnych (Sztum, Poland): 1 gold, 1 silver; • Special Olympics European Floorball Masters (Liechtenstein): 1 gold; • Special Olympics Summer Games (Los Angeles, USA): 1 gold, 3 silver; • Special Olympics Europa Open Swimming (Sneek, Netherlands): 1 gold, 2 silvers; • Special Olympics World Winter Games (Pyeong Chang, South Korea): 3 gold, 2 silver; • Special Olympics European Summer Games (Anrwerp Belgium):2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze; • Special Olympics Baltic Bocce Tournament (Kuldiga, Latvia): participants • Special Olympics Young Athlete Family Training Ski Camp (Zakopane, Poland): participants The Special Olympics – Lviv team was pleasantly surprised and proud to be presented with special scholarships, gratitude certificates, and financial awards for the coaches by representatives of city and regional administrations as a reward for the results of their hard work and dedication.

Hope for the Future

Andriy is sure that in life, nothing happens by chance – everything has its meaning. “If you can help sick children who are at hospitals, please do it,” he implores, “If you somehow can help those boys and girls who are at orphanages and boarding schools, do it as soon as possible! Always remember that all your problems will be solved sooner or later. If you need to wait, so just wait. If you need to have some patience, so be patient! One day is filled with joy and another day is sad. Never curse your life! Learn to appreciate each day. There is a great deal of responsibility laid on the medical staff as they have to interpret correctly manifestations of a disease in order to define character of health problem and ways of its treatment. “Center of physical rehabilitation “Innovo” (translated from Latin as “renovation”) was founded in 2009. In 2014 the center received medical license and started providing services as “Physical therapy and pain management center” in both children’s and grown-ups departments. The main goal of the center is to contribute to the improvement of people’s life quality and physical condition.

EURO 2016 qualifiers: Ukraine’s national football team against Slovenian Lviv’s magical charm once again worked its enchantment on Ukraine’s national football team, as the home side knocked off Slovenia 2:0 in a crucial EURO 2016 qualification match at Arena Lviv on November 14th. The national team was looking for any help they could find after falling at the playoff stage in qualifying at the previous five (!) major tournaments. Having never dropped a game in the Western Ukrainian capital, the team turned to the city in the hopes of improving on its sparkling 12 wins and 2 draws in Lviv (including 6 wins and 2 draws at Arena Lviv). The important match drew a large and raucous crowd of over 32,000, including Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and his Slovenian counterpart Borut Pahor. The crowd was treated to a dominant performance by Ukraine, with the visitors lucky to escape with conceding only 2 goals. The Ukrainians finished off the Slovenes 3 days later in a nervy 1:1 draw to advance to this summer’s EURO 2016 in France on a 3:1 aggregate. Ukraine was led by Dynamo Kyiv forward Andriy Yarmolenko, who slotted 6 times in the qualification campaign. The finals draw is set to be held in Paris on December 12th.

Кваліфікація до ЄВРО 2016: Збірна України - збірна Словенії Українська футбольна збірна перемогла збірну Словенії з рахунком 2:0 у вирішальному відбірковому матчі ЄВРО-2016 на стадіоні Арена Львів 14 листопада. Історія така, що наша збірна досі жодного разу не перемогла у чотирьох зустрічах зі збірною Словенії (два програші і двічі нічия). Але наша збірна не програла досі жодного матчу в столиці Західної України, де вона здобула 12 перемог і 2 нічиї (серед яких, зокрема, 6 перемог і 2 нічиї на Арені Львів). На матчі були присутні понад 32000 глядачів, у тому числі й президент України Петро Порошенко та його словенський колега Борут Пахор. Наша збірна з такою підтримкою відразу ж пішла вперед і можна сказати, що словенці легко відбулися цього разу. Basketball: Halychyna Off to Torrid Start Lviv’s Halychyna basketball team continued its torrid start to the Ukrainian Super League season with victories over Odesa (83:68) and Zaporizhia’s Khortytsia (81:74). The wins pushed the team’s record to an impressive 6-1, good for second place behind undefeated Dnipro. The team’s American shooting guard Larry Hall improved on his personal assist record and now leads the Super League in assists. Halychyna forward Omar Briggs impressed against Khortytsia, earning a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Illya Shemosyuk, Volodomyr Gurtovyi, and Dennis Tyutyunnik have all been impressive recently, each averaging 15.5 points a game. Halychyna sees a busy home schedule in December with games against Kharkiv (Dec. 15), Kremen (Dec. 25), and Odesa (Dec. 27). All games are held at the Halychyna Sports Palace (8 Kerchenska St.).

Lviv’s powerhouse Halychanka ladies handball team will have to deal with a little adversity if they hope to improve on last season’s silver medal in the Ukrainian Super League and semi-final appearance in the European Cup after the unexpected departure of Head Coach Vasyl Kozar. With the team sitting in second place in the Ukrainian league with an 8-2 record, and following a hard-fought 30:30 draw with Turkish team Muratpasa Belediye, Kozar was forced to resign due to “personal circumstances”. Halychanka President Roman Fedyshyn accepted Kozar’s resignation and announced that Vitaliy Nadich and Tetyana Shtefan will lead the team until a new coach is hired after the New Year holiday season. Nadich has worked with the team since 2008, including as an assistant coach to Kozar and most recently as club manager. Shterfan played with the team from 2007-09 – which included two runner-up finishes – and has been acting as an assistant coach with the club since 2010. The Halychanka most recently hosted the 5th-ranked Real Mykolaiv at the Palace of Sports (8 Kerchenska St.) and won over their eastern rivals with scores of 41:16 and 33:15.

While the result of Shaktar’s final home game of the Champions League group stage against top-ranked Real Madrid was never really in doubt – if not going into the match, certainly after the team fell behind 0:4 on Cristiano Ronaldo’s second strike at 70’ – Lviv’s adopted team certainly went out in style. Needing all 3 points from a win to keep their near impossible dream of qualifying for the playoffs alive, the team came to life in the game’s final 15 minutes. The scintillating finish began when Brazilian midfielder Alex Teixeira – who had an incredible 19 goals in 13 league matches this season going in – slotted a 77’ penalty. The goal was the first that the starstudded Spanish squad had conceded in 470 minutes of Champions League action. The Miners poured forward in the game’s dying minutes and were rewarded on an 83rd minute marker by Dentinho and a second from Teixeira at 88’. While the team couldn’t quite cap its magical 15 minutes with a game-tying miracle marker, the 34,000 on hand for the game at Arena Lviv were still buzzing with excitement when the final whistle was blown. The result, while eliminating Shakhtar from Champions League playoff contention, seems sure to secure their qualification for the second-tier Europa League Round of 32. Those games begin in February 2016.

Мало хто ставив на Шахтар у його заключній домашній грі групового етапу Ліги чемпіонів проти мадридського Реалу, особливо якщо зважати на те, що в Іспанії донеччани програли 0:4. Аж до 70 хвилини матчу, коли Кріштіану Роналду забив два голи у ворота наших футболістів, гра проходила з явною перевагою гостей. І лише на останніх 15 хвилинах поєдинку (5 з них – додані) футболісти Шахтаря нарешті показали публіці й собі, як треба грати по-справжньому. Чудово проявився талант бразильського напівзахисника Алекса Тейшейри, у якого на рахунку 19 забитих голів у 13 матчах цього сезону - на 77 хвилині він забиває перший гол у відповідь зі штрафного. Це був перший м’яч, пропущений воротарем Реалу за останні 470 хвилин ігор у Лізі чемпіонів. Шахтар продовжує розвивати наступ і на 83 хвилині Дентіньйо знову добивається успіху, а Тейшейра забиває свій другий гол на 88 хвилині. Усі вболівальники (а їх було того вечора понад 34000) української команди, не перестаючи, гаряче підтримували наших хлопців до останньої секунди матчу. І, хоча й Шахтар вибуває з плей-офф Ліги чемпіонів, він, майже напевно, залишається у основному турнірі, де гратимуть 32 команди. Ці ігри почнуться в лютому 2016 року.

Львівський жіночий гандбольний клуб Галичанка отримав нових тимчасових тренерів – Віталія Надича і Тетяну Штефан після драматичної відставки попереднього тренера Василя Козара. Після другого матчу проти турецької команди Muratpasa Belediye, що завершився з рахунком 30:30, тренер Василь Козар вирішив піти у відставку через особисті обставини. Президент клубу Роман Федишин відставку прийняв і заявив, що новий тренер буде призначений після новорічних свят. Віталій Надич працює з Галичанкою з 2008 року, протягом декількох років він був помічником Василя Козара, а пізніше став менеджером клубу. Тетяна Штефан була гравцем команди в сезоні 2007-2009, а з 2010 року займала посаду другого тренера. У сьомому раунді жіночої Суперліги 4-5 грудня Галичанка зіграла у Львові проти команди Реал (Миколаїв). У першому матчі Галичанка перемогла з рахунком 41:16, а в другому – 33:15. Отже перед початком 8 туру наша команда посідає. 2 сходинку у турнірній таблиці.

Football: Shakhtar vs. Karpaty

Odesa was the uncharacteristic home to Karpaty Lviv’s final game before the winter break on December 3rd, when Shakhtar Donetsk welcomed their cross-city rivals for the third Lviv Derby. The game was played in Odesa as Shakhtar wanted to preserve the Arena Lviv pitch for their own Europa League run this spring. Historically, Shakhtar has owned the series between the two teams, winning 27 and drawing 8 of the teams’ 44 meetings. That, however, couldn’t prevent a rousing 2-goal, second half comeback by the boys in white and green the last time the two teams met. While Karpaty has been riding a strong start to the season, including a vital away victory against Olimpik Donetsk as part of a 4-game undefeated stretch leading into the encounter, the Lions were always going to be in tough against league-leading Shakhtar. Two late Shakhtar goals sealed a deserved 0:3 win in the 3rd Lviv Derby and ensured that the hottest team in the league would go into the break riding an 11-game win streak. Karpaty has much to look forward to when play resumes in spring. The team currently sits in 8th position with 6 wins and 3 draws from 16 games, including a sparkling 4 wins and 2 draws in 7 home games. Lviv’s Gratsya Sport Complex at Pvidenny played host to the Lviv Open Cup 2015 dance sport competition from November 21-22. The event drew over 800 dancers from across Ukraine to compete in the various age categories in the Standard and Latin programmes. Valentyn Torkot & Anastasiya Kvurt from the Crystal Dance Club took home top honours in the Latin programme, while Roman Kozhenevskyi&Yulia Podolynna emerged victorious in the Standard program.

Футбол: Шахтар vs. Карпати Львівські Карпати провели 3 грудня останню гру перед зимовою перервою в Одесі проти донецького Шахтаря. Гра відбулась в Одесі, тому що Шахтар вирішив поберегти поле стадіону Арена Львів для матчів Ліги Європи навесні 2016 року. У 44 попередніх зустрічах двох команд Шахтар виграв 27 і звів у нічию 8 поєдинків. У останній зустрічі двох команд минулого року Карпати забили 2 голи у ворота Шахтаря і матч закінчився з рахунком 2:2. Цей сезон Карпати розпочали доволі вдало, отримавши життєво важливу виїзну перемогу над командою Олімпік Донецьк (28 листопада, 4:1). Перед цим білозелені мали своє пасмо удачі, не програвши жодного з трьох матчів підряд. В одеському поєдинку з Карпатами Шахтар здобув заслужену перемогу 3:0, яка стала його 11 в серії виграних матчів. Карпатам тепер буде що надолужувати, коли гра відновиться навесні. Сьогодні наша команда посідає 8 місце в таблиці з 6 перемогами і 3 нічиїми з 16 ігор, серед яких, зокрема, яскраві 4 перемоги та 2 нічиї в 7 домашніх матчах. EBA Annual General Membership Meetings This year EBA in Kyiv prepared something special for its EBA members by shaping high-caliber Annual General Membership Meetings discourse around the place of Ukraine in a globalized world. The event was held on 17th of November at the InterContinental Kyiv hotel. Distinguished global leaders of multinational companies and Ukrainian top government executives were invited in order to take an in-and-out view on our country. The panels organized in the framework of the meeting provided indepth insight into what global CEOs think about Ukraine and spot-on strategic advice for national executives. EBA Marketing Committee On November, 11 Marketing Committee meeting was held. Khrystyna Sirko, the Marketing Committee Head in Lviv has invited Marichka Artysh, Coach of the International Labour Organization to highlight the topic about effective messages. Marichka Artysh told more about the formation and submission of messages, showed some improper

EBA Thursday Talk On November, 5 at the Restaurant of the Chopin Hotel EBA Thursday Talk took place. Oleksandr Krasnov and Anastasia Stezhko, the representatives from DSV Logistic Company (Kyiv) were invited. Thus innovative logistic solutions in business and trends in logistics sphere were the main points for discussion during business dinner. Also the participants discussed pros and cons of different kinds of transportation, current difficulties faced by logistic companies while doing their business and shared their experience of working with Ukrainian and foreign logistic service providers. EBA HR committee On November, 10 at the NewBiznet office in Lviv HR committee members discussed compensation packages of the companies and medical insurance as an element of the package. The invited experts of the meeting were Alina Yurieva, Head of Adecco Company Western Ukraine branch and Dmytro Tatarinov, director of TBT- Insurance Broker Company with his colleagues. Alina Yurieva told the participants about the aim of the compensation package in the company, gave some examples of its elements and recommendations on how to create SMART compensation package. Then Dmytro Tatarinov with Marina Dayneko and Svitlana Vorona explained different aspects of the voluntary medical insurance that is one of the most popular elements of the package. They also presented the overview of the insurance market on the basis of the research made by TBT Insurance Broker and in addition Marina Dayneko showed the results of the discussion panel on how HR managers respond to different changes in corporate medical package components. Reduced quorum for LLC shareholders' meetings to 50% plus one share Markian Malskyy, PhD Partner at Arzinger Law Firm, attorney-at-law

Q: Dear Markian, I am a shareholder, owning 55% of the shareholder capital of LLC. However, due to the misunderstanding with my partners who jointly own 45% (25% and 20% each) I am not able to make any decision – even to dismiss a director who was appointed by my partners due to the 60% quorum established in the Charter of our LLC. I heard that new legislative changes were recently introduced reducing the quorum for the validity of the shareholders' meetings. Maybe it might solve my problem? Basically, the 60% + 1 share quorum disallowed the shareholder of LLC (limited liability company) owning majority of the shares (but not more than 60%+1 share) to fully control and operate the company. Even though the decision is taken by the majority of the shares, still the meeting will not be valid unless the required quorum of shareholders is present. On 24th of November Ukrainian Parliament has adopted the law No. 2757 on amending the law On Business Entities with respect to reducing the quorum for the shareholders' meetings of LLC from 60%+1 share to 50% +1 share. So the next step is signing the law by the President (which is most likely) and afterwards it will be officially published and will come into legal force. The law provides that the charters of limited liability companies shall be brought into the compliance with newly adopted amendments and till that time the charter shall apply in the part not contradicting to the law. At the same time the law provides that the charters of LLC with nonstate share may contain different provisions regarding the quorum. Thus in your case it is necessary to amend the charter, otherwise it will still be impossible to reach the quorum as the charter provides 60% and not 50% or 55%. The bad news is the fact that without the quorum you are empowered neither to amend the Charter on reducing the quorum, nor to take any other decision (like director’s dismissal, appointment of new director, etc.). Moreover, even if you would be able to have a quorum by negotiating and agreeing it with one of your partners, still it will be almost impossible to register new version of the charter in the State Registration Service without your other partner as all the shareholders have to sign a new Charter. Still this problem, unlike the difficulty with the quorum, might be solved via filing a claim to the state court.

new virtual currency Syrian-Ukrainian internet innovator seeks to spark online communications revolution with more value-based philosophy Lviv is fast emerging as the unofficial capital of Ukraine’s booming IT sector and the list of exciting online international initiatives taking shape in the city continues to grow. Syrian-Ukrainian businessman and philanthropist Hares Youssef is part of a growing number of international IT innovators looking to utilize Lviv expertize. Mr. Youssef is not a newcomer to the west Ukrainian market, having collaborated with Lviv IT companies on a number of projects over the past seven years. Together with his Lviv partners, he is now finalizing the preparations for an online virtual currency that he hopes will revolutionize the way the whole world communicates through social media. Hares Youssef’s Ukrainian connection stretches back to the early 1980s, when he first left his native Syria for Kyiv as part of a student exchange programme that reflected the close relations the Syrian government of the time enjoyed with the Soviet Union. He later returned to Ukraine in the early 1990s, building up a business empire with interests in a range of Ukrainian industries. His eponymous HARES Group Holding has since expanded to include assets and interests in a number of countries. As his business interests have diversified geographically, Mr. Youssef has maintained his ties to Ukraine. As the Syrian-born businessman has branched out into the IT sector, he has taken advantage of this association with Ukraine to develop productive partnerships with a number of IT companies in Lviv. His latest innovation is the ‘Golden Hearts’ virtual currency, which will allow social media users and other online audiences to make charitable donations and send monetary gifts across the internet via a fully convertible virtual currency backed by physical gold and pegged to global commodities market prices. Mr. Youssef is working on the ‘Golden Hearts’ initiative with the Lviv office of London-based IT company YouTeam. The electronic currency uses the sdk.finance engine developed by Cyberforce – a Czech-Ukrainian fintech development team. He has previously teamed up with YouTeam on a number of IT projects including the ‘Panda Club’ indoor positioning app (in partnership with Devabit) and ‘Hubbub.fm’ voice social network (with Intellias).

Mr. Youssef has a philosophical approach to internet innovation and sees his latest project as a way of promoting a more value-based culture of online communication. It is a vision that includes both support for international charities and opportunities for individual users to personalize the way they share their emotions and opinions in the global village. He is hoping his Lviv colleagues will be able to transform this vision into an international virtual currency capable of influencing the way we all interact online. What first attracted you to the world of social media innovation? The process of developing my ideas in the IT sector provides me with lots of answers to philosophical questions I have about how humans relate to each other and to the world as a whole. I see the internet as the only medium capable of promoting the key values of communication, transparency, and sharing – sharing ideas, sharing information, sharing emotions, sharing resources, and sharing money. Throughout my life, I have always been interested in the idea of a common consciousness for all humanity. The world contains so many different nations, different languages, and distinct groupings, yet there are ideas and emotions that unite us all. Internet communication is still in the early stages of development, but we are already seeing the formation of this common consciousness, which is capable of transcending the old borders and barriers. In IT terms, today’s internet fulfills the function of a common server for all humanity. Each and every one of us has access to this server. I find it very exciting and inspiring to be part of this historic process, and to contribute personally to the evolution of this common consciousness. Social media has become a core component of our everyday lives in a very short space of time. What do you see

as the shortcomings of today’s social media environment, and what is your vision for the future of social media? The values of the market are far too dominant in today’s social media. The owners of social media platforms treat users as raw material. We call them users, but in reality they are actually being used. They need to become more empowered, to become stakeholders in the places where they spend their time and invest their energies. My ultimate goal is to help foster a culture of transparency and promote the concept of sharing. My philosophy is, ‘the more you share, the more you get’. The ‘Golden Hearts’ concept is a gateway that can bring us towards this philosophy of sharing. As a philosophy, it is perfectly suited to the almost limitless possibilities of the internet. It can take us beyond the old models of communication and interaction that first developed and evolved in the street. Social media platforms are heavily dependent on their ability to attract users. Which demographics do you see as the primary participants in the ‘Golden Hearts’ initiative? Initially, the ‘Golden Hearts’ concept will primarily be of interest to people with large numbers of online followers and to female social media users, who generally place greater value on sincere displays of affection. Sending a ‘Golden Heart’ to a lady will mean more than simply making a more conventional money transfer. ‘Golden Hearts’ represent solid gold, and they can also include personalized messages. This will allow for more emotional input and interaction. As people share their ‘Golden Hearts’, they will share their emotions. Charities will also benefit from the ability to receive direct online donations. We expect to secure partnerships with a number of international charities who will then be able to receive ‘Golden Hearts’ donations worldwide. LVIV promotion appreciation without the interference of corporations or the market. There is a need for a more meaningful set of values governing internet communication. At present, all we have are Facebook ‘likes’, which are essentially empty gestures despite their popularity. With ‘Golden Hearts’, you will be able to show your support transparently and materially in a way that will be noticed by others. You have business interests across the globe but choose to work with Ukrainian IT companies. What factors influenced your decision to opt for Ukrainian IT development partners? Prior to the ‘Golden Hearts’ project, I had already developed a range of startups with Lviv IT companies over a number of years. The people I work with in Lviv are extremely skilled and are able to translate my concepts and ideas into functioning IT solutions. They are diligent workers who have the ability to focus on core ideas. Many major American and European IT companies now have offices in Ukraine, but it makes more sense for me to work directly with Ukrainian companies. I own shares in American IT companies but I choose to cooperate with Lviv companies because it is easier for me to find a common language with them and communicate my ideas. How does your experience with Ukrainian IT companies compare to your interaction with IT professionals in other countries? IT professionals are a separate nationality. Wherever they come from, they are all the same. I love this new type of people. If you go to Silicon Valley, you will see that there are no national or language barriers. You will find Americans, French, Ukrainians and South Americans working side by side and communicating in the common language of technology. Differences still exist from country to country in terms of access to capital and in management capabilities, and this is where American companies continue to excel. I will be working with American partners on the global marketing of ‘Golden Hearts’ following the official project launch at the end of 2015. Your ‘Golden Hearts’ initiative is global in scope. What role will associations with Ukraine play in the global promotion of the ‘Golden Hearts’ concept? I hope it will bring additional prestige to the Ukrainian IT market. From my point of view, associations with Ukrainian IT can only be a positive thing. The Ukrainian IT sector is already highly respected. It enjoys wide recognition internationally. I am convinced this reputation will continue to grow in the coming years. In the IT world, ‘Made in Ukraine’ is a strong brand. LVIV TODAY | December 2015

A Spider

for Christmas? Fastidious housewives usually shoo spiders and their webs from the corners of the house, or from their hiding places in furniture. But in Ukraine, what says Christmas more than a spider and its spider web? Well, considering that Ukrainian holiday traditions include such memorable and special seasonal symbols as poppy seeds, garlic, stalks of wheat, and even cross-dressing (for special travelling Christmas plays called Vertep) – why not include the “pavuk” (spider).

How the Spider Gave Us Tinsel The spider-web-covered Yalynka (Christmas tree) is now a standard Ukrainian Christmas story. Like all good folktales, it comes in many versions and has appeared in a number of contemporary children’s books. Basically, the story goes that there lived a poor, widow cramped in a hut with her children. One day, a pine cone dropped and

started growing outside the hut. The children tended to it lovingly until it grew into an extravagant tree. Knowing they did not have money to decorate the tree for Christmas, the family accepted the fact and went to sleep. Overnight, spiders heard the children crying and spun intricate webs on the tree. In the light of the morning, the threads shone like silver and gold and made the tree exceedingly beautiful. To this day, Ukrainians decorate their trees with fake spider webs to celebrate this Christmas miracle – which explains the tradition of tinsel on the Christmas tree. Different details and elaborate embellishments of the story all depend on the teller and the tale. Another version has the Holy Family hiding in a cave during their flight to Egypt. The benevolent spiders spin webs to cover the entrance to the cave. When Herod’s soldiers pass by, they don’t bother to search the cave as it obviously hasn’t been disturbed in quite some time – and the Holy Family is safe.

From Ukraine’s Wheat Sheaf to Germany’s Christmas Tree Prior to the arrival of the Christmas tree from Germany in the 19thCentury, the Ukrainian didukh (sheaf of wheat) was the symbol most associated with the winter holiday season. The spirits of ancestors came into the home in the form of the didukh during the holy days, as it was they that lived in the grain in the fields that led to such a beautiful harvest. While the didukh is symbolic, the yalynka can be considered as more decorative. Originally based on tree worship in early Germany, the yalynka over time morphed into a separate Christmas tradition. Trees were often ornately decorated with all kinds of unique and creative materials, like home-made paper and metallic ornaments, apples, walnuts, candies, and candles. Pavuchky (little spiders), made of paper or wire, and their webs (tinsel) are other examples of traditional tree ornaments.

The Spider: A Traditional Ukrainian Symbol While the story of the spider and its web on the yalynka probably arrived from Germany along with the Christmas tree itself, the pavuk as a special symbol is well-established in Ukraine. The arachnid has been held in high esteem since prehistoric times. In many cultures, it is frowned upon to kill a spider; “you will bring rain” or “you will call evil upon yourself” are well known in different areas of the world. The pavuk is often considered to be the centre of the universe, with its spider web contributing to the creation of the world. Spider and spider web motifs appear in Ukrainian folk art in many guises – on pysanky (Ukrainian Easter Eggs), embroidery, weaving, and other arts. These too are known as pavuchky (little spiders). Some Ukrainians will even hang a pavuchky woven of straw in the ceremonial corner of the home as a talisman, to protect from evil spirits. Interestingly, a chandelier in Ukrainian is called a pavuk – especially the hand-carved wooden ones found in old Hutsul and Boyko churches. So, as you hang your traditional and contemporary ornaments on your very own yalynka, you might now want to add a touch of Ukrainian folklore to your tree in the form of at least one small pavuchok. You know, just in case.
