The 2016 Crystal Ball – The Year Ukraine Turns West While much of this month’s issue takes a look back at the year that was in 2015, I thought I’d take a look into a crystal ball to see what 2016 has in store for Lviv and Ukraine. Just as last year was a year of stabilisation for the country, 2016 looks to be a year of renewal. By embracing English, erasing communism, and facing visa liberalisation in Europe, Ukraine looks poised to finally ‘turn West’. Here’s what you can expect in Ukraine in 2016:
renaming of public places – such as streets, buildings, and parks – that were named in honour of communist heroes. This includes city and town names, and nearly 900 have already been identified, including oblast capitals such as Dnipropetrovsk (Grigory Petrovsky) and Kirovograd (Sergei Kirov). Be sure to collect some tourist maps from your travels this year, as they’re likely to be collector’s items by this time next year!
Life will get easier for English-speakers
No more elections!
President Petro Poroshenko has declared 2016 to be the “Year of English Language” in Ukraine. What does that mean? If you speak English, there will be many more opportunities for you here – from more English classes (meaning more English teachers) to more English TV and radio programs to even English-language movies in the cinemas (!). Best of all – the President promises to simplify procedures for English speakers to stay in the country.
For only the second time since 2009, the country will not be faced with an expensive and divisive electoral process (2011 had no elections, 2013 had 5 special runoff elections). It is estimated that the Presidential and Parliamentary elections in 2014 cost around $125 million USD and last year’s Municipal (Local) elections cost around $50 million, so the stability will be welcomed not just politically, but on the country’s bottom line as well. [Note: Elections are slated to be held in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts this year, but it is unclear what role the Ukrainian government will have in them.]
Travel will get easier for Ukrainians It has been a long time coming for the EU to open its doors to visa-free visits for Ukrainians, one of the key demands of protesters during the EuroMaidan. Ukraine opened its doors to European citizens in 2005, following the Orange Revolution, as a sign of goodwill and the country’s intention to turn West. However, it took a further revolution, a drastically different political make-up, and a Russian invasion or two for Europe to get on board. Well that, and increased security measures, border trainings, and biometric passports. The EU announced in December that Ukraine has met the requirements and has indicated that 2016 will be the year you can finally travel with your Ukrainian friends to EU (Schengen Zone). Lviv will remain the ‘Soul of Ukraine’ In maybe the easiest prediction of them all, I predict Lviv to remain the cultural ‘Soul of Ukraine’ in 2016. Leopolitans and visitors can once again look forward to world-class music festivals (including Jazz Bez, ZaxidFest, and Alfa Jazz), special events (such as Lviv Fashion Week, Lviv Coffee Festival, and the Days of Chocolate), and sporting events (like Europa League and World Cup qualifying football action). Of course there is much more going on in the city than those above, so be sure to keep reading Lviv Today each month to see just what wonderful things are going on in the Western Ukrainian capital. THIS MONTH IN LVIV CROWNS ON DISPLAY Lviv Historical Museum (6, Rynok square) At the premises of Lviv Historical Museum (6, Rynok square,) was put on display the spectacular “Crowns of the World” historical exhibition. Leopolitan history buffs and guests of the city have the unique opportunity to admire more than 60 original and replica masterpieces from spiritual and secular leaders from around the world, including the crowns of Napoleon and Danylo Halystkyi (the first King of Rus), and the ceremonial headpieces of Nefertiti and Tutankhamen. Special attention should be paid to the reconstructed Mayan crown of their halach uinics, or supreme rulers. Following its run in Lviv, the exhibition will travel around Ukraine. Exhibition will be available till June.

WORLD-CLASS FOOTBALL RETURNS TO LVIV: SHAKHTAR SET TO FACE GERMANY’S SCHALKE IN EUROPA CUP ACTION February 18th, 22:05 at Arena Lviv (199 Stryiska St.) Following their 3rd-place finish behind elite squads Real Madrid and PSG at the Champion’s League group stage, Lviv’s adopted team, Shakhtar Donetsk, earned direct qualification to the Round of 32 in the secondtier Europa League competition. The 9-time Ukrainian champions,
who captured the Cup back in 2009, are set to face German squad Schalke in a home-andaway set beginning on February 18th at Arena Lviv. The teams have only met once before – at the same stage of this tournament in 2005 – when Shakhtar prevailed 2:1 in the two-game set.
Shakhtar will look to continue their pre-winter break form when they return, having won their last 11 league matches. They will face a Schalke squad that hasn’t been in top form recently, having won only 3 of their last 10 Bundesliga games. This marks the 3rd-time The Pitmen have qualified for this

A
s another action-packed year in Ukraine’s cultural capital comes to an end, the Lviv Today team would like to look back and honour the people, places, and events that have helped make the past 12 months in Lviv so memorable. 2015 was both an exciting and a challenging year in Lviv; one which ended with the Western Ukrainian capital being named as a UNESCO City of Literature. Despite a general global economic downturn that has hit some of Lviv’s trading partners particularly hard, 2015 has seen more and more international companies looking to invest in the region and establish offices in the city, especially in the tourism and outsourcing sectors. The international carrier Atlas Jet added Lviv to its list of destinations last year, marking a symbolic step for Lviv Airport towards its increasing role as a regional air travel hub. Culturally, 2015 has been another hectic year in Lviv as Leopolitans and guests of the city have had no shortage of activities to enjoy amongst our evergrowing festival and holiday calendar. Among the most popular last year were the spectacular Alfa Jazz Fest, the iconic Jazz Bez festival, and the always-popular Chocolate Days, Coffee Fest, and Cheese & Wine Holiday. The Lviv Today team would like to congratulate all of this year’s Lion Award winners and thank them for their contributions to making Lviv such a great place to live.

Цей рік був одночасно і цікавим, і складним для міста та його громадян; й, на завершення, міжнародна організація ЮНЕСКО визнала Львів "Містом літератури". Незважаючи на загальний глобальний економічний спад, який вразив деяких із торгових партнерів Львова, у 2015 році все більше й більше міжнародних компаній бажають інвестувати у регіон й створювати тут свої представництва, особливо у сфері туризму та аутсорсингу. Міжнародний авіаперевізник Atlas Jet додав Львів до свого переліку напрямків минулого року, що стало символічним для львівського міжнародного аеропорту у його зростаючій ролі регіонального центру авіаперевезень. Минулий рік також був насичений культурними подіями – у його календарі практично не було вільних днів без фестивалів, виставок, форумів тощо. Серед найбільш популярних у минулому році варто відзначити, як завжди, прекрасно організований Alfa Jazz Fest, зимовий (хоч і без зими) Jazz Bez фестиваль, і завжди популярні свята шоколаду, кави, сиру й вина. Наша редакція вітає всіх переможців конкурсу Lion Award у цьому році і висловлює подяку за їх внесок у піднесення популярності та розквіту Львова.

After more than two years since the EuroMaidan revolution began, most Ukrainians can agree that the pace of reforms has been largely disappointing. While many former civil society activists now hold key positions in government and parliament, corruption continues to plague the country and some state institutions cannot provide basic services. Amid the scepticism, one area where there is agreement that positive change has taken place is with the new patrol police in Ukraine’s major cities, including Lviv. The law on the new national police force came into effect on August 23rd – Ukraine’s National Flag Day holiday – and was marked in Rynok Square by 400 police officers swearing an oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people. The ceremony was attended by Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Internal Affairs Minister Arsen Avakov, First Deputy Interior Minister Ekaterina Zguladze, and other high-ranking local authorities. The new, US-style cops are a breath of fresh air in Ukrainian law enforcement, a department that, according to many, was previously notorious for bribetaking and inefficiency. It is one of the few visible reforms undertaken by state authorities in their quest to achieve European standards in policing.

Багато хто з колишніх активістів громадянського суспільства сьогодні займає ключові позиції в уряді та парламенті, але корупція не зменшилась, і деякі державні установи все ще не можуть забезпечити основні послуги. На цьому тлі є одна область, де майже всі згодні, що позитивні зміні відбулись - це нова патрульна поліція у великих містах України, у тому числі й у Львові. Закон про нову національну поліцію набув чинності 23 серпня – у День національного прапора України – що було відзначено на площі Ринок за участю 400 нових поліціантів, які склали присягу на вірність українському народові. У церемонії взяли участь прем'єрміністр України Арсеній Яценюк, міністр внутрішніх справ Арсен Аваков, перший заступник міністра внутрішніх справ Катерина Згуладзе та інші високопоставлені особи. У нової поліції нова форма, на зразок американської, всім вони подобаються, а дехто їх навіть боїться. Нова поліція – це наче ковток свіжого повітря для українських правоохоронних органів, які, на думку багатьох, раніше були сумнозвісними за своє хабарництво та неефективність. Це одна з небагатьох видимих реформ, що проводяться органами державної влади у їх прагненні досягти європейських стандартів.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg made his first visit to Ukraine in September when he met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Lviv to inaugurate the International Centre for Peacemaking and Security training ground near Yavoriv, Lviv Region. The two were on hand to observe a joint disaster response drill that Poroshenko hailed as evidence of Ukraine’s ‘enhancement of our special partnership with NATO’. NATO has expressed firm support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, but alliance member states have declined its request for offensive weapons. Instead, some member states have provided special military trainers, including Lithuania, Canada, and the USA. The September drill that drew Stoltenberg and Poroshenko featured over 1100 rescuers from 34 countries and was meant to test the capacity of the state to respond to a mine explosion and collapse, and the resulting earth tremors.

Ever since it hosted three games at the UEFA EURO 2012 tournament, where it was one of eight venues and the only one in Ukraine constructed especially for the event, Arena Lviv has become Western Ukraine’s premiere entertainment destination. As a 34,915-capacity performance venue, Arena Lviv is simply unmatched in Western Ukraine. 2015 proved to be a very busy year for sports at Arena Lviv, as it hosted numerous Champions League Games (Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, PSG, and Sweden’s Malmo), Ukrainian national football team games both during EURO 2016 qualifying (Ukraine vs. Luxembourg, Belarus, and the playoff vs. Slovenia) and friendly games (against Georgia and Latvia). 2015 will also be remembered as the year that Arena Lviv cemented its role as the ideal venue for the most iconic performers to host electrifying events. Arena Lviv also emerged as a dynamic venue to host world-class international conferences. Located on the outskirts of the city, the venue annually hosts hundreds of corporate and social events – from business meetings and trade shows, to team-building events, galas, receptions, and spiritual gatherings, and even glamorous fashion shows and weddings. Also on location is a fan café, a go-karting club, and an official Shakhtar Donetsk fan store.

The Leopolitan sky became a little more crowded in 2015 with the arrival of Atlasjet Ukraine, which made the welcome decision to make Lviv’s Danylo Halytskyi International Airport its base. Starting from late October, when Atlasjet Ukraine introduced regularly scheduled flights between Lviv and Istanbul, the company has claimed a confident stake in the domestic air transportation market. MARIA MUZYCHUK
2015 was a very big year for Maria Muzychuk, a 22-yearold chess school student from Stryi in the Lviv Region. This two-time Ukrainian women’s chess champion was a worldbeater in 2015 – literally. Maria was crowned the 15th Women’s World Chess Champion after defeating Russian Natalia Pogonina in the final. Along the way, she earned the coveted Grandmaster designation, and became one of only 33 women in the world with that distinction (and one of 5 in Ukraine, including her older sister). On her magical run to the world crown, Maria didn’t drop a match to the likes of Yuanling Yuan, Monika Socko, Dronavalli Harika, former World Chess Champion Antoaneta Stefanova, and #1-seeded Humpy Koneru. In the final, she knocked off Pogonina with a score of 2½–1½. In addition to earning the Grandmaster title, she also qualified directly for the 2015 Chess World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan. You can catch this amazing young woman as she attempts to defend her title against two-time former World Chess Champion Hou Yifan in the 2016 Women’s World Chess Championships, expected to take place right here in Lviv in March 2016. Минулий рік був дуже успішним для Марії Музичук, 22-річної студентки зі Стрия. Дворазовий чемпіон з шахів серед українських жінок стала чемпіонкою світу 2015 року. Марія здобула шахову корону 15 чемпіонату світу з шахів серед жінок, перемігши росіянку Наталію Погоніну у фіналі. Також вона здобула звання гросмейстера і стала однією із 33 жінок у світі з таким званням (і однією з 5 в Україні, серед яких її старша сестра). На своєму шляху до світової корони Марія не зазнала жодної поразки у матчах з такими сильними претендентками як Юаньлін Юань, Моніка Соко, Дронавахаллі Харіка, колишня чемпіонка світу Антоанета Стефанова, і посіяна під номером 1 Хампі Конеру. У фіналі вона перемогла Н. Погоніну з рахунком 2½ : 1½. На додаток до титулу гросмейстера, вона також кваліфікувалась безпосередньо на Кубок світу з шахів 2015 у Баку. Нашу молоду чемпіонку можна буде побачити у Львові у березні 2016 року, коли вона захищатиме свій титул за шахівницею у матчі проти колишньої двократної чемпіонки світу Хоу Їфань.

BACH MARATHON In 2015, the whole world united on March 21st to celebrate the 330th anniversary of the birth of the remarkable musical genius Johann Sebastian Bach. Lviv eagerly and proudly joined the worldwide initiative ‘Bach in the Subways’ to celebrate and promote the immortal musical legacy of J.S. Bach. Leopolitan classical music lovers were in for a special treat – a 24-hour live performance of Bach’s greatest works, hosted at three of Lviv’s finest ven-
ues: the historic Lviv Philharmonic Hall, the reverent House of Organ & Chamber Music, and the magnificent Potocki Palace. Beginning at midnight with one of the greatest pieces of the Baroque era – High Mass, and finishing at 2am on March 22nd with the genius Easter Oratorio, there was not a dull moment throughout the entire event. In order to do justice to the legend’s diverse musical legacy, more than 600 musicians from across Ukraine and
abroad participated in the Marathon’s 20 concerts! The day also featured Bach’s music being played in a number of non-traditional venues in Lviv, including coffee shops, restaurants, and trams. For the entire month, in order to mark the occasion, Leopolitans and guests of the city were able to enjoy riding the “Bach Tram” – a Bach-themed tram that travelled from the Central Railway Station to the city’s central Rynok Square.

Святкування 330-річчя з дня народження музичного генія Йоганна Себастьяна Баха у всьому світі було призначене на 21 березня 2015 року. Львів з нетерпінням і з гордістю приєднався до всесвітньої ініціативи "Бах в метро" з метою святкування цієї дати і популяризації безсмертної музичної спадщини Й.С. Баха. Львівські любителі класичної музики могли, (якщо мали час, звісно) прослухати 24-годинний живий концерт з найвідоміших творів

Баха, що виконувались на трьох найкращих концертних майданчиках міста: у Львівської філармонії, Будинку органної та камерної музики і величному палаці Потоцьких. Опівночі розпочалась "Урочиста меса" - один із найвеличніших творів епохи бароко, а на завершення о 2 годині ночі 22 березня прозвучала велична Великодня ораторія. Щоб віддати шану музичному генію, що належить всьому людству, понад 600 музикантів з усієї Україні
та з-за кордону взяли участь у 20 концертах марафону. Протягом усього дня музика Баха також звучала у багатьох нетрадиційних місцях у Львові, серед яких були і кафе, і ресторани і навіть трамваї. Протягом місяця львів’яни та гості міста також могли насолоджуватись геніальною музикою у спеціальному "Бах-трамваї", який курсував із Головного залізничного вокзалу до центру міста. TRADITIONS REVIVAL: CHYCHEREE BRAND
Talented designer Anastasiya Vasylyk successfully launched Chycheree in 2015, a new, ethno-brand of clothing. The main source for inspiration for her dazzling outfits, dresses, and accessories were ancient Ukrainian traditions featuring different eras of the country’s history. The key idea of Vasylyk’s first collection, KSENYA, was a modern interpretation of Ukrainian noblemen and women from the Renaissance era. Her second collection, Children-Flowers, was driven by motifs from Ternopilarea embroidery – in particular, floral arrangements from the Village of Zalyschyky. In addition to creating new collections, participating in Fashion Weeks in Uzhgorod and Ternopil, and also at the Kraina Mriy festival in Lviv, 2015 saw Chycheree present a new artistic project alongside the TRETY PIVNI Photo Studio (Dominika Dyka). The project aimed to create an image of a charming Ukrainian girl for use in Chycheree’s newest collection. All of her fashion shows, Vasylyk complements with historical retrospective stories about complexity of Ukrainian traditional costuming. She believes that it is necessary to accustom children at an early age to the heritage of their native culture. She also believes that it is important not to restrict our perceptions to the “Ukrainian girl-in-wreath” image that was so popular in Soviet times. Her brand instead endeavours to create an elegant and exquisite image of a modern Ukrainian woman with a touch of rich, colourful, and melodic adornment of Ukrainian folk motifs. SERHIY PETLYUK’S “UNTITLED” Leopolitan Serhiy Petlyuk, a 34-year-old new media artist, was announced as the grand prize winner of the UK/RAINE: Emerging Artists from UK and Ukraine competition – the first open competition for emerging artists from the two countries. Conceived by the Firtash Foundation in collaboration with London’s Saatchi Gallery, the contest aimed to identify and support talented artists between the ages of 18 and 35 that live and work in one of the two countries. Petlyuk walked away with both the £20,000 GBP first prize as well as the £10,000 GBP prize in the New Media category for his “Untitled” video, which projected naked male and female bodies onto outerwear to create what Petlyuk describes as a “unified moving mechanism”.

2015 was a lively and fruitful year for LESIA SEMI, the young Ukrainian women’s clothing designer. In March, she debuted her Autumn/Winter collection at a swanky event at Arena Lviv before showcasing it in April at Fashion Philosophy Week in Lodz, Poland. LESIA SEMI is known for her laconic forms, complex constructions and cuts, and simplicity in style and comfort. All of her collections are sourced solely from natural materials. She has also launched a line of stylish accessories. In May, the LESIA SEMI resort collection was presented at the Zamok Leva hotel, along with her new perfume line SEMI by Lesia Semi. By summer, the new Lesia Semi fashion studio was festively opened. The studio combines office, showroom, dress-making, and tailoring services. The LESIA SEMI Spring/Summer 2016 collection was presented at Paris Fashion Week at the trendy NOMET Showroom before appearing, along with a second perfume “DIVINE" by the designer, at Lviv’s-own Lviv Fashion Week. Lesia Semi – is country’s first fashion designer, who fruitfully works with Ukrainian producer to create spectacular perfumes, and also is one and only Ukrainian designer who presented advertizing video promoting brand’s perfume. In mid-December, at Arena Lviv media-center the designer presented her capsule collection of evening gowns designed exclusively for the New Year and Christmas holiday season. The creativity of this young and dynamic designer was on display at the opening of the first Lesia Semi brand store in Lviv. МИСТЕЦЬКЕ DZYGA ART ASSOCIATION ОБ'ЄДНАННЯ "ДЗИГА" Leopolitan art fans have plenty of options to enjoy ‘old world’ art and culture. But where do modern art aficionados head? The answer is Dzyga (The Spinning Top), which has been an oasis of creativity in Lviv since 1997. In its 19 years of existence, Dzyga has not only been a vibrant gallery of contemporary art, but has also hosted more than 400 exhibitions, 1250 concerts, 26 festivals, 360 literary presentations and other, often unusual attractions. Stashed away near the quarters of the former Dominican monastery, the club has attracted over 1.5 million visitors since it first opened. Some of the highlights of Dzyga’s cultural calendar include: the Flugery Lvova music festival; the Week of Contemporary Art exhibition; the Fort Mission cultural initiative; and, of course, the always-popular Jazz Bez festival, which celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2015.

MODEL OF THE YEAR: IVA Iva (Olya Ivat’), the 179 cm teenager from a small Potelych village in Zhovkva region of Lviv Oblast, saw her international modelling career skyrocket in 2015. The 16-year-old went from walking the halls of her Potelych village school all the way to walking the runways of Paris. It was in December 2014 when she found the courage to write to the director of the influential OK’S Models management agency to see if she had what it takes it to make it in the world of fashion modelling so that she could feel positive about her lanky body. She started studying intensively at the OK’S models school, which allowed her to polish her modelling skills and build her profile. After just two months, she began to book small jobs around Ukraine. Soon she would get her first glimpse of the international fashion world, as she travelled to Tokyo in July for the Fendi Haute Couture Fashion show and the Brilliage cosmetic campaign. By September, Elite Model Management scouts named her a ‘local gem’ and booked her – without so much as an interview! – for the dazzling Alexander McQueen, Comme Des Garcons and Alexis Mabille shows at Paris Fashion Week. Today, the tender and astoundingly beautiful Iva is spreading the fame of Ukrainian models worldwide. Look for her brilliant career to continue to flourish as she conquers the catwalk in 2016.
МОДЕЛЬ РОКУ: ІВА Жила-була собі дівчинка у невеличкому селі Потелич, Жовківського району неподалік Львова. Спочатку вона була непомітною, але коли їй виповнилось 16, вже ніхто в містечку не міг не зауважити її струнку, наче очеретина фігуру. І стала вона замислюватись, а чи не годі їй ходити шкільними коридорами і чи не вийти їй на яскраво освітлені подіуми Парижа чи Лондона. У грудні 2014 року вона, немов пресловуте "гидке каченя" відважилась написати директору модельного агентства OK’S Models, щоб довідатись свою долю, чи не приймуть її в товариство красунь, що величаво походжають у розкішних сукнях під захопленими поглядами публіки та спалахами фоторепортерів. А вже у вересні менеджери Elite Model Management назвали її "місцевою перлиною" і запросили – навіть без інтерв'ю! – на покази колекцій Alexander McQueen, Comme Des Garcons і Alexis Mabille на Тижні моди в Парижі. Сьогодні, ніжна і дивовижно красива Іва поширює славу українських моделей по всьому світу. Ми з приємністю спостерігатимемо за розвитком її блискучої кар'єри на світових подіумах у 2016 році.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION MARATHON As always, this year’s Christmas celebrations in Lviv were both rich and colourful. Beginning from mid-December, Leopolitans and guests of the city immersed themselves in the seasonal market on Rynok Square and along the Opera House alleyway. This festive and popular meeting place offered a wide
range of delicious and delightful folk crafts and traditional Christmas treats, while theatrical performances such as the Christmas Fairy Show from the artists of Voskresinnya theater kept holidaymakers entertained. Some of the most well-liked events this year included the annual Blaze of the Christmas Star parade,
The Great Carol festival, the Christmas at Hay celebrations, and the colourful New Year at the Park event with 3D-mapping and Gatsbystyled fire shows. Of course, you can’t forget the delicious Pampukh Holiday, where festival goers were able to celebrate this tasty, donut-like, Leopolitan delicacy.

Charming conductor from Finland – Ms. Dalia Stasevska
CELEBRATING JEAN SIBELIUS’ 150TH ANNIVERSARY 2015 saw the world music community celebrate the 150th anniversary of the great Jean Sibelius, a Finnish composer and violinist of the late Romantic and early-modern periods. To mark the occasion, musicians and artists around the world honoured the genius by organizing a variety of cultural events, including concerts, festivals, photo exhibitions, and even cinema viewings. The Lviv Regional Philharmonic Theatre hosted a gale event to commemorate the jubilee on December 5th. Lviv’s INSO-Lviv Youth Academic Symphony Orchestra was led during the concert by the guest baton of Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska. This talented young musician made her debut at the National Opera of Finland just last year after studying orchestra conducting at the Royal Music Academy of Sweden and the Sibelius Musical Academy. The concert was organised by the Embassy of Finland in Ukraine to mark Finland’s Independence Day on December 6th – the day Finland declared independence from the Russian Empire in 1917 – and was opened with a welcome by Mr. Juha Virtanen, the Finnish Ambassador to Ukraine.

СВЯТКУВАННЯ 150-РІЧЧЯ ЯНА СІБЕЛІУСА Світове музичне співтовариство 2015 року святкувало 150-річчя великого фінського композитора і скрипаля пізнього романтичного та раннього модерного періодів, Яна Сібеліуса. Цю подію музиканти й артисти в усьому світі відзначали проведенням різних культурних заходів, включаючи концерти, фестивалі, фотовиставки, і навіть кіно-перегляди. У Львівській філармонії 5 грудня відбувся урочистий захід на честь ювілею Сібеліуса. Львівський молодіжний академічний симфонічний оркестр ІНСО-Львів виступав під керування фінського диригента Далі Сташевської. Як талановитий молодий музикант вона дебютувала на сцені Національної опери Фінляндії минулого року після закінчення навчання по класу диригування в Королівській музичній академії Швеції та музичній академії Я. Сібеліуса. Концерт був організований посольством Фінляндії в Україні з нагоди Дня Незалежності Фінляндії 6 грудня – саме в цей день Фінляндія оголосила незалежність від Російської імперії в 1917 році. З привітанням виступив пан Юха Віртанен, посол Фінляндії в Україні.

MONUMENT TO AUTHOR OF UKRAINIAN ANTHEM
ПАМ'ЯТНИК АВТОРУ ГІМНУ УКРАЇНИ
Lviv festively unveiled a monument to Mykhailo Verbytsky, the author of the Ukrainian national anthem and one of the earliest professional composers in Galicia, on December 27th. Using donations from Leopolitans and Ukrainians from across the country, the monument to this Ukrainian-Greek Catholic priest and composer was the finishing touch to Lviv’s Year of the Composer, celebrated in 2015 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Father Mykhailo. The Nadsyannya NGO held a nationwide competition for the design of the monument, raised the nearly 1 million UAH necessary for its design and construction, and selected the 2.9-metre sculpture by Volodomyr and Andriy Sukhorsky out of 21 different proposals. Leopolitan fans of Verbytsky and guests of the city can find Lviv’s newest monument at the corner of Bandery and Henerala Chuprynky, near the street named after him (Myhaila Verbytskoho).
У Львові 27 грудня урочисто відкрили пам'ятник Михайлу Вербицькому, автору гімну України та одному з перших професійних композиторів у Галичині. Створений на пожертвування львів’ян і громадян всієї України, цей пам'ятник став яскравим акцентом у святкуванні 200-річчя з дня народження композитора, який відзначався у 2015 році. Громадська організація "Надсяння" провела загальнонаціональний конкурс на проект пам'ятника і зібрала майже 1 млн. грн. для його проектування і будівництва. Переможцем конкурсу, на який була представлена 21 пропозиція, став проект скульпторів Володимира та Андрія Сухорських, висотою 2,9 метра. Галицькі шанувальники Вербицького та гості міста можуть покласти квіти до підніжжя пам'ятника на розі вул. Бандери і ген. Чупринки, недалеко від вулиці, що носить ім'я Михайла Вербицького.

On January 12, Lviv’s art gallery “Green Sofa” hosted opening of the exhibition of paintings and dolls “Come from childhood” by Victoria Protsiv and Olena Tsiluyko. Young Leopolitan artists presented spectacular art works featuring original manner. Despite being grown-ups, artists focused on childhood emotions, on all funny moments, which they remember from the times when they were little. Each doll by Olena Tsiluyko is exclusive and one of a kind. Victoria Protsiv is so popular nowadays, that her paintings are often used for advertising, embroidery, printing on cups and clothes, even on passport holders! Exhibition will be available till January 31 at Lviv’s art gallery “Green Sofa” (7, Virmenska str.).

CINDERELLA PREMIERS Lviv celebrated the splendid premiere of the Cinderella ballet, based on Charles Perrault’s classic fairy tale, on December 26th at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre. Leopolitan audiences and guests of the city have been enjoying the Cinderella ballet since the 1970s, and this modern version was no different. The audience at the premiere raved about the costuming – thanks to the creative choices of Lviv’s own Maryana Hromysh – as well as Tadey Ryndzak’s choreography and Halyna Volovetska’s art direction. Fans of this world-class ballet can catch a repeat performance on January 31st.
ПРЕМ'ЄРА "ПОПЕЛЮШКИ" На сцені львівського театру опери та балету 26 грудня відбулась прем'єра знаменитого балету "Попелюшка" за мотивами казки Шарля Перро. Вперше цей балет був поставлений у Львові 1970 року, і ця найновіша постановка зберегла усі найкращі риси оригіналу. Як завжди, на прем'єрі театр порадував чудовими костюмами роботи Мар’яни Громиш, а також хореографією Тадея Риндзака під художнім керівництвом Галини Воловецької. CHRISTMAS MARATHON IN LVIV Forum Lviv shopping center has turned the pre-holiday anxiety of Lviv citizens into a real pleasure. The true spirit of European Christmas lasted in the shopping center for an entire month. Launch of Christmas marathon at Forum Lviv was celebrated with the official lighting of the highest in-house Christmas tree in Lviv on December 12th. The Official Ceremony of Lighting the Christmas tree was followed with Saint Nicholas visit on December 17-20th, Christmas traditions Day on December 24-27th, New
Year shopping quest on January 01-02 and Christmas caroling on January 07-10th. Forum Lviv presented an intense Christmas festivities program. The festive atmosphere for Forum Lviv shoppers was secured with master classes in candle making, Christmas Gingerbread decorating, creating dolls; free gifts wrapping; performances by famous Lviv bands – Rockoko; jazz carols with Shockolad, carols by the Dudaryk choir, DoShidSontsya and Kurbasy.

The third annual SALT® Restaurant Awards, which honour the best in Ukrainian restaurants, were held in Kyiv on December 7th. Like the Oscars for restaurants, this gala event attracts the leading Ukrainian restaurateurs and international professional experts. SALT Awards are given to restaurants selected by customers and judged by a professional jury. Selections are not limited in any way – they represent many different styles and tastes and come from cities across the country. All in all, 116 restaurants from 11 different cities were chosen as finalists from a record-breaking 1,140 restaurants nominated from 40 Ukrainian cities! Each finalist was visited by members of the awards jury at least twice. The jury of the SALT® Restaurant Awards is comprised of famous Ukrainian restaurateurs whose restaurants are not competing

in the competition. This year’s jury included such culinary icons as Maksim Khramov, Yakov Livshits, Taras Seredyuk, and Saveliy Libkin, as well as Leopolitans Vado Arzumanyan (Restaron Restaurant Company), Andrey Khudo (Holding of Emotions! FEST), and Mark Zarkhin (Fast Food System Restaurant Group). Basketball: Super League’s Cup Despite victory over BC Hoverla (Ivano-Frankivsk) in the second game of Super League’s Cup quarterfinals with the score 81-75, Lviv’s BC Halychyna terminated participation in the competition due to total score of two games (156-159). After first game’s victory there was still chance for both teams to get though to the finals, however the second game was not successfully for local team. The most efficient player of the game was Lviv’s Maksym Tyutyunnik with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Also within last match spectacular play presented guard Illya Shemosyuk with 22 points and 5 handoffs to team mates. Despite terminated participation in the Super League Cup, BC continues participation in Ukraine’s basketball Super League as leader.

On December 12-13th, Lviv’s sports palace “Halychyna” hosted XI Open National Tournament on Artistic gymnastics “Winter fairy-tale”. The event brought together over 300 participants in age from five years and older, which represented teams from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Rivne, Slavytych, Chernigiv, Lviv and others. Tournament was attended by several teams from Warsaw, Krakow and Bielsko-Biała. As competitions main judge came Halyna Kochergina.
У Палаці спорту "Галичина" 12-13 грудня відбувся XI відкритий національний турнір з художньої гімнастики "Зимова казка". У змаганнях взяли участь понад 300 учасників віком понад п'ять років, які представляли команди з Києва, Харкова, Дніпропетровська, Рівного, Славутича, Чернігова, Львова та інших міст. У турнірі також взяли участь команди з Варшави, Кракова і Бельсько-Бялої. Головним суддею змагань була Галина Кочергіна.

Ukrainian Wife-Carrying Championship Most men will, at one point or another, complain about getting their wives off their backs – but not these fellows. No, these husbands were very specifically trying to get their better-halves onto their backs as they sprinted around the course during Lviv’s first-ever Wife-Carrying Championship. The event, held on the square in front of Ivan Franko University, attracted couples from around Western Ukraine that were willing enough to test their strength over the 254-metre course. Finland is the birthplace of this unusual sport and among the 6 couples that qualified for the finals were 5-time Finnish champions Taisto Miettinen and Kristina Haapanen. The experienced Finns proved too powerful for the rookie Ukrainian couples and took first place with a time of 49 seconds. Vyshgorod’s Andriy and Alyona Fedosenko were runners-up in 55 seconds, while Lviv’s own Volodomyr and Maryana Gula finished third with a time of 59 seconds. The winners took home the woman’s weight in kvas, the mildly alcoholic drink made from fermented rye bread, yeast, or berries (or, as some call it, Ukrainian root beer).”
Забіги з дружинами на плечах Часом деякі чоловіки скаржаться, що, їх дружини сидять в них на плечах - але це не той випадок. Навпаки, ці чоловіки дуже конкретно намагались втримати своїх половинок на власних спинах під час проведення у Львові першого забігу з дружинам на плечах. У цьому спортивному заході, що відбувся на площі перед університетом ім. І. Франка, зібрались сімейні пари з усієї Західної України, щоб випробувати свої сили на 254-метровій дистанції. Батьківщиною цього незвичайного спорту є Фінляндія і серед 6 пар, які вийшли у фінал, були 5-разові чемпіони Фінляндії Тайсто Мєттінен і Христина Хаапанен. Досвід фінської пари виявився їх перевагою, що дало їм змогу посісти перше місце з часом 49 секунд. Андрій та Альона Федосенко з Вишгорода посіли 2 місце з часом 55 секунд, а львів’яни Володимир і Мар’яна Гула - на третьому місці з результатом 59 секунд. Medical staff face a great deal of responsibility as they have to both correctly identify a disease and explain the ways for its treatment. The Innovo (Latin for ‘renovation’) Centre for Physical Rehabilitation was founded in 2009 and started providing physical therapy and pain management services for adult and children in 2014. The centre strives to contribute to the improvement of people’s quality of life and physical conditions.

EBA WESTERN UKRAINIAN OFFICE’S ANNUAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING On December 4th at the Leopolis Hall, the EBA Western Ukrainian office held their Annual General Membership meeting "Think globally, act locally". The purpose of the meeting was to discuss changes in the global economy and the influence of regional development on them. Tomas Fiala, the CEO of Dragon Capital and member of the EBA Board 2016, presented a detailed analysis of the dynamics and prospects of economic development of Ukraine in 2016. Honoured guests of the meeting, including Oleg Synyutka (Head of Lviv Regional State Administration), Olga Sivak (Head of the Department of Foreign Economic Relations and Investments of Lviv City Council), Igor Kondro (Head of SFS of Ukraine in Lviv region) and Levko Prokipchuk (Head of Lviv Customs SFS) stressed their willingness to cooperate with investors and encourage the development of effective regional business environment. Analyzing 2015, participants expressed a sincere gratitude to all who contributed to the activity of the Western Ukrainian EBA. Special gifts and certificates were presented to the EBA Western Ukrainian Office chairs of committees and to the Regional Coordinating Council 2015. During the meeting, the members of Regional Coordinating Council 2016 were announced. These are Alina Boychuk (PZU Ukraine), Oleg Drin (Leopolis Hotel), Markiyan Malskyy (Arzinger), Anton Podilchak (Advice Group), and Taras Yurynts (Guldmann-Ukraine). In addition to the fruitful and rewarding discussions, a business cards lottery was held. Another pleasant surprise for the participants was a musical gift from Khristina Shpeck, the violinist of the Kantabile Orchestra. Thanks to the partners of the meeting – Zaltech Ukraine, SoftServe, Kyivstar, IDS Aqua Service, Yarych, Bacardi-Martini, Pilgrim, Leopolis Hotel – we managed to positively surprise our participants during the Western Ukrainian EBA’s AGM.

Q: Dear Markian, I am a representative of Ukrainian company which is engaged in foreign economic activity and concludes numerous contracts with foreign companies. When performing such contracts, in our practice there were lots of disputes and misunderstandings which usually required quick and effective resolution. However, when legal actions were taken in Ukrainian or foreign national courts, we faced many problems. Correspondingly, as of today we consider the option of including an arbitration clause in our standard foreign economic contract. In this regard, please, inform which are main advantages and disadvantages of dispute resolution in international arbitration courts. International arbitration is one of the most popular alternative means of dispute resolution and its popularity grows with every year. The reason for this still remains with the distrust in state courts, defective, burdensome and outdated procedural law, which provides parties to the dispute with many possibilities of unfair actions, for example, directed at delay of proceedings. Except this, I would note the following main advantages of international arbitration: impartiality; possibility to choose the arbitrators, place of arbitration, applicable law; impossibility to appeal arbitral award on the merits; flexibility of the procedure; quickness and confidentiality. Beside this, Ukraine is a party to important international agreements, inter alia, New York Convention of 1958, which prescribes the possibility of recognition and enforcement of arbitral award in almost every country of the world. However, international arbitration has also some disadvantages: it is not always faster and cheaper; arbitrators have limited powers; participation of third parties is restricted; problems with recognition and enforcement of an arbitral award are possible. Except this, when a dispute is being considered in an arbitration, plaintiffs face problems with security for a claim and have no support in collection of evidences. One should also keep in mind that arbitration is a much friendlier procedure, which however ends in a binding and enforceable decision. It is much more common to remain in normal business relations with a partner after an arbitration. One should also note that not all disputes are “arbitrable” in Ukraine as for example corporate disputes are not. Generally, when deciding whether to conclude an arbitration agreement, country of counteragent's origin, price of potential dispute etc. should be taken into account, but in most cases international arbitration should be considered as the preferred mean of dispute resolution with foreign counteragents.

EBA & DELOITTE SEMINAR ON NEW CIT RULES AND ITS IMPACT ON TAX RETURNS On December 1st at the Leopolis Hall, a seminar from Deloitte on new CIT rules and its impact on tax return 2015 was held. Specialists told the participants more about the specifics of new CIT rules in general. They also spoke about accounting profit/loss as a basis for adjustments during tax return preparation and about IFRS profit/loss as a basis for tax accounting. Participants also used the event to speak about possibilities of transition and potential advantages, topical issues of the current Tax Code of Ukraine, and potential solutions. In addition, a focus was on the major changes in transfer pricing introduced by Law No.609-VIII in August. Finally, a law specialist from Deloitte covered the required connection of transactions with taxpayers’ business activities and court practice trends. On behalf of the participants we would like to express our gratitude to Deloitte representatives for the informative meeting and up-to-date knowledge shared.
EBA WOMEN’S CLUB On December 11th before the fabulous winter holidays began, a special workshop by Tetyana Furgalo (professional dolls master, teacher, and psychologist) was held for the Women’s Club. During the workshop, participants discovered more about the history of motanka-dolls in Ukraine, challenged existing myths, and made their own personal doll according to ancient Ukrainian traditions. We would like to thank Tatyana Furgalo for her inspiration and opportunity to express our own creativity and for her personal example of being enthusiastic in doing what she likes to do.
EBA ENGLISH COURSE On December 23rd, the English for Business Communications course, organised in a partnership with the Language Gallery Translation Centre, finished. The program was specifically created for EBA members and flexible according to the participants’ needs, wishes, and group dynamics. Over the 6 months of the course, participants improved their English by studying different topics in three major areas: grammar, vocabulary, and business English). At the final meeting, participants provided course feedback, received certificates, and made funny photos. Also, teachers and students had a lively discussion about how to maintain language levels. Patrol Police
as the face of the new Ukraine LAW ENFORCEMENT REVOLUTION OFFERS FIRST STREET LEVEL EVIDENCE OF POST-MAIDAN REFORM PROCESS Ever since Ukraine gained independence in 1991, the country’s law enforcement agencies have consistently ranked bottom in surveys of public confidence. For many if not most Ukrainians, the nation’s police officers were nothing less than symbols of corruption. These overwhelmingly negative perceptions make the success of Ukraine’s new Patrol Police all the more remarkable. The Patrol Police service was first unveiled in Kyiv in summer 2015, with subsequent launches in a range of Ukrainian cities. There are currently over 4,000 patrol officers operating in Ukraine. By mid-2016, this figure will rise to 16,000 patrol police officers covering every oblast in Ukraine, including Donetsk and Luhansk. They have replaced the country’s widely discredited traffic cops – long seen as the most corrupt of all Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies. The Patrol Police initiative has received considerable support from Ukraine’s international partners, with America taking a leading role in providing trainers drawn from within the U.S. police force. Recruits have received significantly higher salaries than their predecessors, along with a daunting mandate to serve as the public face of the new Ukraine.

From corrupt cops to selfie stars The public response to the Patrol Police service has been emphatically positive. Whereas Ukrainians used to joke that the only people to avoid late at night were the police themselves, the officers of the new service have found themselves in demand for selfie photos with members of the public. Stylish uniforms have contributed to this popularity, as has a recruitment policy that seems to have emphasized youth and physical fitness alongside more traditional academic qualifications. The photogenic appeal of Ukraine’s new cops has also proved a big hit internationally, with the Patrol Police garnering more photo features and column inches over the past six months than any other aspect of the Ukrainian reform process in the international media. As well as looking good, the Patrol Police have also set a new tone in relations between law enforcement and members of the Ukrainian public. The emphasis during training has been firmly on public service, with particular attention paid to the kind of interaction that leads to mutual respect. This message seems to have resonated – since the launch of the Patrol Police, Ukrainian social media has been awash with personal accounts from people who have engaged with officers and
found them to be polite, helpful and ethical – qualities that were rarely associated with the traffic cops they replaced. Initial surprise has since given way to respect. This has led to unprecedented levels of public confidence in the service, with surveys ranking the Patrol Police as by far the most trusted state body – no small achievement for a new institution that was basically rushed into service in an environment of national crisis.
New police force in 2016 Ukraine now aims to replicate the success of the Patrol Police as it overhauls the entire police service. The scale of the task is significantly larger, with officials looking to hire 130,000 new police officers to replace the existing force. This will require a vast recruitment and screening process, with former officers offered the chance of reapplying to join the new force and those accepted subjected to an extended trial period. Doubters continue to question whether Ukraine’s new law enforcement officers will prove any less corruptible than their predecessors, with cynics claiming that the changes are largely cosmetic. Nevertheless, the change in attitudes towards law enforcement that the launch of the Patrol Police has achieved is beyond question. LVIV TODAY | January 2016
