Living Like a Local Having spent several years in Ukraine, I am always amazed when I meet a foreigner that lives here and has yet to try a “truly Ukrainian” experience. I’m not talking about a bowl of borshch and plate of varenyky somewhere on Rynok Square, but of the way your average, run-of-the-mill Ukrainian spends their day. If the words marshrutka, Dzidzio, and salo mean nothing to you – then you might want to keep reading. For nearly 8 years, Lviv Today has been showing Leopolitans, guests of the city, and foreigners living among us just what is going on in our great city and this month is no different – American lawyer Bate C. Toms looks at how the new British-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce office in Lviv will impact the city, and British author Alex Stemp discusses the train journey to Budapest. But if you are looking for a truly unique Ukrainian experience, you should learn to live like a local.

GET AROUND LIKE A LOCAL Ukraine is actually a pretty easy place to get around in. There are plenty of options to choose from – busses, taxis, tramways, trains – and they all offer good value. The majority of Ukrainians don’t make much money each month, so penny-pinching is important. In that regard, the cheapest forms of transportation are the tram (2 UAH), marshrutkas (mini city busses, 4 UAH), and elektrichkas (suburban trains, prices depend on distance). These are highly popular, very busy, and nearly always come with a great story – from the breakdancing Gypsies to brunching babushkas. If you want to meet locals, or have a truly Ukrainian experience, using public transport is essential.

CHILL LIKE A LOCAL Like anywhere else, Ukrainians have many different ways to relax during their free time. Many have to do with the outdoors and are “must-try” experiences on their own – like mushroom-hunting and shashlik (shish kebab). But one activity that Ukrainians really enjoy is singing. If you go to a local’s home, chances are that a music show like X Factor or Voice of Ukraine will be on the tube. In that regard, try finding a couple of Ukrainian bands that you really enjoy – and Lviv’s-own Okean Elzy and Ruslana don’t count. All you need to do is turn on a music channel here – don’t worry, they actually play music videos – and find a sound you like. Some of the more popular contemporary singers include: Vera Brezhneva, Dzidzio, The Hardkiss, Onuka, SKAY, Druha Rika, Jamala, and Tina Karol. Ukrainians will love that you know about their music.

PARTY LIKE A LOCAL There are so many reasons to celebrate in Ukraine – Eastern holidays, Western holidays, and special days for names, professions, and anniversaries – there is no shortage of different ways to celebrate either. While many foreigners have already checked out one of Lviv’s many hopping clubs, Ukrainians prefer to party in a slightly different manner. If you’ve not yet been to a wedding or other large celebration, you are missing out on one of the most cultural experiences the country has to offer. You can tell you are at one if the table has no room for another plate, there is more alcohol on the table than nonalcoholic drinks, and if someone stands up every few minutes to give a toast. As Ukrainians love to sing, a great place to find one of these is at a karaoke club. If you drink, be sure to keep eating – and be sure to try some of the local delicacies. While outside Ukraine, the country is known for its borshch (beet soup), varenyky (dumplings), and holuptsi (cabbage rolls), Ukrainians view their national dish as salo (bacon fat). It comes in all shapes, sizes, and seasonings – and you’ll surely be a local for enjoying it.

SPEAK LIKE A LOCAL Finally, to truly experience Ukraine as a local, you’ll need to pick up a little bit of the language. And while Russian will be understood by any local you meet in Lviv, if you really want to impress Leopolitans, you should learn a little bit of Ukrainian. This means more than just the basic ‘Good day’, ‘Thank you’, and ‘I don’t understand’ phrases. Ukrainian is a rich and poetic language with plenty of interesting and useful phrases that are not too difficult to learn. Some of my favourites are: ‘hroshi na veeter’ (money in the wind / waste of money); ‘ya prosto zhartuyu’ (I’m only kidding); ‘ne pilikai’ (stop chirping / be quiet); and ‘ty perebilshuyesh’ (you’re exaggerating). There are plenty of classes and tutors available in the city that will be happy to teach you some more, or you can pick up a book or even download an app to your phone (Duolingo is popular). You’ll be amazed at just how much more you’ll experience after picking up just a few words of Ukrainian. It’s the best way to learn to live like a local. Lee Reaney, Editor of Lviv Today

Curious Leopolitans and guests of the city should mark March 4th on their calendars as a special “Jolly Holiday of Spring”, featuring Chinese artists and musicians, event will be held in Ukraine’s cultural capital at the spectacular Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre. This festive event is being held to mark the Chinese New Year, which the city – and the world – celebrated on February 8th. Don’t worry if you don’t know a thing about China! ITALIAN CINEMA WEEK Beginning March 3rd, Lviv Art Palace (17 Kopernyka St.) Leopolitan cinema fans and guests of the city can get ready for some of the finest films in Italian cinema as Italian Cinema Week returns to Lviv for the sixth time. Starting from March 3rd, festivalgoers will be able to get acquainted with modern Italian cinema, which is quite popular in the city since 70s. Organisers hope to continue the tradition of cultural interaction between the two nations, so have also organised festival events in cities across Ukraine in addition to Lviv’s festival. Some of Italian Cinema Week’s most anticipated arrivals include: the 2015 Marco Bellocchio drama Sangue del mio Sangue (Blood of My Blood); the thriller La Foresta di Ghiaccio (The Ice Forest); and Nanni Moretti’s 2015 Franco-Italian drama Mia Madre (My Mother), which was selected to compete for the coveted Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Audiences also won’t want to miss Ferzan Özpetek’s 2014 comudrama Allaciate le Cinture (Fasten Your Seatbelts), whose stars – Kasia Smutniak and Paola Minaccioni – won the Nastro d’Argento Awards for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively. MIKHAIL YEFREMOV IS “MR. GOOD” March 23rd, 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Legendary actor Mikhail Yefremov will be in the city on March 23rd to present his special stage show “Mr. Good” at Lviv’s popular Opera & Ballet Theatre. Yefremov is a Russian film and stage actor that made his debut in the mid-70s and was awarded Russia’s prestigious Meritorious Artist award in 1995. Developed in the 2010s along with Dmitry Bykov and Orlusha (Andrei Orlov), “Mr. Good” features Yefremov reading a series of poems that put a satirical spin on contemporary Russian society, politics, and culture. It was originally broadcast on Dozhd TV, but the project was shut down after the commentary became too critical of the Russian government. The show can now be found in audio format on the Echo of Moscow radio station. Performances of “Mr. Good” always attract large crowds, so if you don’t want to miss out on this spectacularly clever performance, you’d better hurry up and book your tickets! March 26th, 19:00 at Ukraine Sport Palace (18 Melnyka St.) Druha Rika – one of Ukraine’s most popular rock bands – is set to perform at Lviv’s Ukraine Sport Palace on March 26th as part of their Supernation album tour. Druha Rika has been performing since 1996 and has released five studio and two compilation albums. The band has changed significantly since the release of their last album, Metanoia P.1. ALESSANDRO SAFINA IN CONCERT March 5th, 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) The Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre is proud to present one of the most famous Italian vocalists in the world today, Alessandro Safina, in concert on March 5th. Safina possesses a commanding tenor voice and is equally at home singing both pop and opera – often blurring the boundaries between the two. Born in Siena, Italy in 1963, Safina achieved fame with his biggest hit to date, Luna (Only You), part of the Portuguese TV series O Clone (The Clone) soundtrack. He is also notable for his collaborations with such artists as: British pop star Elton John, Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, and famed sopranos Sarah Brightman, Barbara Hendricks, and Sumi Jo. Safina was forced to cancel two planned concerts in Crimea after the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture announced that it would ban him from playing in Ukraine. Not wanting to upset his Ukrainian fan base, the towering tenor announced on January 22nd that he had cancelled his Crimean concert dates. In Lviv, Safina will treat his fans not only to the songs that brought him the love and recognition of fans from around the world, but also some of his new musical compositions. LAIMA VAIKULE IN CONCERT March 25th, 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Latvian singer, actress, and director Laima Vaikule, best known in Europe and the former USSR for such hits as ‘Vernisage’ and ‘Charlie’, will grace the illustrious stage of Lviv’s lavish Opera & Ballet Theatre on March 25th. Originally trained as a nurse, the lovely Latvian first started out performing at local clubs and restaurants in the Latvian capital of Riga before moving to Moscow in the 80s to study acting and directing. She scored her first pop hit in 1985 and has since become an icon in the former Soviet Union and its successor states. During the 80s and 90s, Vaikule was a regular at European musical festivals and the recipient of many awards and recognition. She was designated a National Actress of Latvia in 1996 and awarded the Grand Prix for her unique contribution to the Latvian musical and cultural scenes. She promises to perform for Leopolitan fans and guests of the city not only those songs that brought her popular fame and recognition, but also some original compositions. LVIV’S HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS Lviv’s Christmas and New Year’s season was, as always, full of bright and festive events right across the city that lasted until the Epiphany on January 19th. The day, when the Orthodox Church marks the baptism of Jesus, is celebrated by Ukrainians by cutting holes in the ice of rivers or lakes – often in the shape of a cross – to bathe in the freezing water, which is believed to be holy and imbued with special powers for the occasion. Neither the snow nor the sub-zero temperatures could stop Canadian instructors and the American paratroopers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade from celebrating the final day of the Christmas season by taking a dip in the freezing water. The brigade is in Ukraine as part of the Joint Multinational Training Group.That wasn’t the only fun event that day, as Lviv closed out the holiday season in style with an Ice Sculpture event. This spectacular and artistic show saw four talented sculptors turn the

frozen ice into wonderful creations, which were then colourfully lit up at night to add an enchanting touch to the transparent masterpieces. Leopolitans and guests of the city were unanimous in selecting Myroslaw Dedyshyn’s Tree of Life figure as the winning carving.And just when Leopolitans thought the celebrating was over, citizens were treated to one final, festive holiday event. The city has made it a custom to celebrate China’s Lunar New Year and the festivities have become a highlight of the calendar for fans of Oriental culture in Lviv. This year, Leopolitans and guests of the city were delighted by a colourful celebration featuring traditional and contemporary Chinese cultural activities, including: singing, dancing, arts & crafts, and even culinary workshops. But festivalgoers, undeniably, were delighted by the vibrant and entertaining Live Fire Dragons carnival parade.

ЗИМОВІ СВЯТА ТРИВАЮТЬ... Сезон різдвяних та новорічних свят, був, як завжди, сповнений яскравих і святкових заходів по всьому Львові і тривав аж до Водохреща 19 січня за календарем православної церкви. Вважається, що саме на Водохреща вода стає святою і набирає особливих властивостей. У цей день, традиційно, українці вирізали ополонки в кризі озер і річок, часто у формі хреста і купалися в крижаній воді. Цього року ані холод, ані сніг не змогли перешкодити скупатися в крижаній воді американським та канадським воякам. Пірнули в ополонку інструктори, які проводять вишкіл українців на Яворівському полігоні та десантники зі 173 повітряно-десантної бригади США. Також 19 січня у Львові відбувся конкурс крижаних скульптур, які вражали фантазією авторів у захоплюючому і по-справжньому художньому шоу. Протягом двох днів в центрі міста чотири скульптури були створені й представлені на суд журі. Увечері усі крижані скульптури були барвисто освітлені, що додало чарівності прозорим шедеврам. Львів’яни й гості міста одностайно обрали переможця – більшість проголосувала за скульптуру Мирослава Дедишина "Дерево життя". І коли українські свята нарешті закінчилася, наші китайські друзі запропонували відсвяткувати разом з ними місячний Новий рік, що вже стало доброю традицією для любителів східної культури у Львові. Цього року, усі були в захваті від барвистого фестивалю, де були представлені традиційна і сучасна китайська музика, спів, танці, мистецтво й ремесла, кулінарні майстер-класи і багато іншого. Одним з основних моментів фестивалю став парад "живих вогняних драконів".

SPECTACULAR ART ON DISPLAY Lviv’s Andriy Sheptytsky National Museum hosted the opening of an exhibition devoted to some of Ukraine’s most outstanding sculptors on February 4th. The exhibition showcases the spectacular artistic works of a group of artists responsible for introducing Ukrainian traditions into their creative works at the turn of the 21st Century. Leopolitan art fans and guests of the city will have the opportunity to gaze upon some of the masterpieces of Petro Antyp (Horlivka/Kyiv), Alexander Dyachenko (Kyiv), Volodomyr Kochmar and Valeriy Pirogov (Kharkiv), and Lviv’s-own Oleh Kapustyak and Vasyl Yarych. Their efforts led to a renewed

vigour among Ukrainian artists and sculptors in the Ukrainian plastic art of the Trypillian culture. The charming exhibition features sincere, warm, and living compositions that will truly surprise visitors with their depth and vitality. BESKID TUNNEL STAGE COMPLETED Frequent travellers to Western Ukraine’s Carpathian and Transcarpathian regions will be happy to hear that the first phase of construction of the new double-track at Beskid Tunnel has been completed. The most difficult part of the construction along the Carpathian Beskid – Skotarske route – the top ledge of the tunnel – was finished on January 21st. The new two-way Beskid Tunnel will replace the existing single track that dates back to 1886 and limits trains to just 15–40 km/h along the only remaining ‘narrow’ track left between Lviv and Chop. The renovation will see the capacity of the route more than double, from 100 train pairs per day compared to previous 47, as trains will now be able to negotiate the area at speeds of up to 70 km/h. The Beskid Tunnel is of strategic importance to Ukraine as it acts as the fifth corridor from Ukraine to Italy and handles 60% of western border cargo traffic. The new tunnel will be equipped with modern working and emergency lighting, ventilation, video surveillance, fire and corrosion protection systems, and control sensors to monitor harmful gas emissions. The total cost of the project is nearly 2.2 billion UAH and is financed through loans by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). One of the most ambitious construction projects in modern Ukraine, the Beskid Tunnel renovation began in 2013 and is expected to be finished in late 2017, with the first trains using the new tunnel in mid-2018.

БЕСКИДСЬКИЙ ТУНЕЛЬ МАЙЖЕ ПРОЙДЕНО Ті, хто часто переїжджають через мальовничі Карпати у Закарпатську область, з радістю зустрінуть звістку про завершення першого етапу будівництва нового двоколійного Бескидського тунелю. Найважча частина будівництва цього нестандартного тунелю була завершена 21 січня. Тепер будівельники мають поглибити його ще на 4 метри, зміцнити стіни, виконати перепуски для гірських річок тощо. Новий двоколійний тунель замінить старий одноколійний, що служив вірою й правдою з 1886 року, швидкість потягів у якому становила 15-40 км/год, і який неодноразово руйнувався під час воєн. Тепер понад сто пар потягів за добу зі швидкістю до 70 км/год проходитимуть через тунель довжиною понад 1800 м там, де раніше проходили максимум 47. Бескидський тунель має стратегічне економічне значення для України, він є частиною п'ятого міжнародного транспортного коридору з України до західної Європи, і на нього припадає понад 60% вантажоперевезень західного напрямку. Новий тунель буде оснащений сучасним робочим і аварійним освітленням, системами вентиляції, відеоспостереження, пожежогасіння та захисту від корозії, а також датчиками контролю викидів шкідливих газів. Загальна вартість проекту становить майже 2,2 млрд грн., він фінансується за рахунок позик Європейського банку реконструкції і розвитку (ЄБРР) та Європейського інвестиційного банку (ЄIB). Будівництво одного з найбільш амбітних будівельних проектів в сучасній Україні - Бескидського тунелю почалось у 2013 році і, як очікується, буде повністю завершене наприкінці 2017 року, а перші поїзди пройдуть по ньому вже в середині 2018 року.

Lviv’s truffles ardour Recently, the city’s newest shopping centre, Forum Lviv, saw a new restaurant festively open its doors to Leopolitans. Tartufo Trattoria, an authentic Italian restaurant with cuisine prepared by Chief Cook Davide Lagomarsino, is located on the mall’s 3rd floor. This stylish and cosy eatery, with an original and delicious menu that allows customers to purchase Italian goods like the delightful tartufo mushrooms (truffles), was successfully upgraded with the addition of its own confectionary: Confiserie Just! Restaurant owner Olga Zhenchak kindly took time out of her schedule to answer some questions for Lviv Today: LT: Out of all the activities you could be involved in, you chose the restaurant business. Why? How did it all begin? I am a Leopolitan who from an early age tried to be independent and to put in all of my efforts to achieve my goals. I spent a lot of time studying here in the city. I have a degree in International Relations and a post-graduate education in Economic Sciences from the Ivan Franko University and followed that with an MBA from Lviv Management Institute’s business school. I then began teaching at the business school, but before long I understood that academics can’t be the only focus of my life. So I decided to bring to life another of my cherished dreams – to open a restaurant. This was a dream which I had for a long time! Opening a restaurant is one of the most attractive types of investments; however it also had to be a very responsible decision, one that requires a lot of attention and sacrifice. Of course, I knew that the operation would require a lot of investments – time, money, resources. It also had to be done with love, care, and passion.

Opening the Restaurant I travel quite a lot. But once, while visiting Croatia with my family, we stumbled on to this very little town of Motovun. This is where I first experienced and truly fell in love with truffle mushrooms, which in Croatia and Italy are called tartufo. It is then that I understood that I wanted to open up my own restaurant named after the truffle. Why? Because truffles are valuable delicacies and they would be something new in Lviv. I wanted to treat my guests with exquisite and delicious foods – delicacies – and the tartufo is second to none! On that

Навчалася у Львівському Національному Університеті ім. І. Франка на факультеті міжнародних відносин за спеціальністю міжнародні економічні відносини. Згодом навчалася на юридичному факультеті; а також закінчила аспірантуру нашого університету та отримала науковий ступінь кандидата економічних наук. Але на цьому не закінчилося моє прагнення розвиватися, і я спробувала отримати додаткові знання у сфері бізнесу. Навчаючись у Бізнес-Школі Львівського інституту менеджменту отримала диплом на базі міжнародної програми MBA – Master of Business Administration. Згодом я почала викладати у Бізнес-Школі ЛІМу й почала зосереджувати увагу на таких дисциплінах, як економіка ЄС, глобальний менеджмент та управління бізнесом, міжнародні відносини, лідерство. Продовжуючи наукову діяльність я вирішила спробувати те, що давно хотіла, а саме, відкрити ресторан. Це була моя мрія, яку я плекала протягом довгого часу! Організація ресторанного бізнесу вважається одним з найбільш привабливих видів інвестиційних вкладень, але й дуже і дуже відповідальним кроком! Це складний процес, який потребує багато віддачі. Звичайно, я розуміла, що піде багато інвестицій, часу, ресурсу, але найголовніше, що у цій діяльності потрібно все робити з любов’ю та пристрастю. Я багато подорожую. Одного разу, відвідавши зі своєю родиною Хорватію, ми побували в одному дуже маленькому містечку Мотовун, де я вперше познайомилася та закохалася у гриби трюфеля, а італійською та хорватською – це tаrtufo. Згодом скуштувала їх в Італії у регіоні Тоскана. Саме тоді я зрозуміла, що хочу відкрити ресторан. І він має бути саме з такою назвою. Чому? Тому, що трюфеля – це є цінні делікатеси, це є щось нове для Львова, і ми б хотіли частувати гостей саме такими справжніми та смачними стравами. Тоді на цій горі (у Хорватії) я загадала собі бажання, виношувала цю мрію близько 7 років, і ось зараз вона почала імпелементуватися в життя. У Львові чимало закладів, які пропонують італійську кухню, чим тратторія Tartufo відрізняється від інших? Яка ваша “фішка”? Шеф-поваром нашого ресторану є італієць – Давіде Лагомарсіно. Ця людина є живою енциклопедією. Він відкрив багато ресторанів в Італії, в Австралії, в Чехії, зараз планує відкрити ресторан у Лондоні. Майстер кухонної справи, шеф, який готував для Ніколь Кідман та Рассела Кроу та для інших відомих людей. Він – людина з великої букви, багато досягнув, і мене вразило те, як з ним легко спілкуватись. Він

справжній професіонал свого діла, дуже толерантний та розумний чоловік. Це наша муза, наш Маестро і тепер вже дуже близький наш друг. Я розповіла йому свій бізнес-план, і він приїхав до Львова й зробив висновок, що нашому місту дійсно бракує справжнього італійського ресторану. Давіде сказав, що допоможе мені лише запустити цей ресторан, але бачив як у мене горять очі й вийшло так, що ми з ним почали співпрацювати і працюємо й далі. Давіде надав нам одне правило, якого ми стараємося дотримуватися: “Всі є рівні, просто в кожного є свій обов’язок роботи, який повинний виконувати професійно”. Тобто офіціанти мають свої обов’язки, менеджер, директор також, і кожен повинен виконувати свою роботу на 100%, з повною віддачею. Я вважаю, що це дуже правильний підхід. І ще, він завжди наголошує, що: чи в особистому житті, чи в бізнесі, Ти завжди повинна бути на позитиві. І все що Ти робиш, Ти повинна робити з пристрастю! Десь підсвідомо, у мене ці думки завжди були, але чомусь, я не акцентувала на цьому уваги. І зараз, коли я кожного ранку проводжу тренінги для нашого персоналу я звертаю на це увагу більше, тому, що розумію на скільки це важливо! Коли офіціант, а це найперша людина, яка зустрічає нашого гостя, обслуговує його, він повинен бути завжди привітним, усе робити з посмішкою на обличчі. Оскільки, Європі це притаманно, а американці взагалі без цієї посмішки нікуди не йдуть. Тому, дуже важливо для ресторану мати правильну концепцію і, найголовніше, кваліфіковану команду, персонал, який повинен зажди розвиватися і тільки в кращу сторону.

I have always taken to heart words of one Polish producer, namely Kshishtofa Zanussi: “Always savour a high-quality meal. Take it easy. And do the same with good books and movies.” As far as the cuisine goes, we use real Italian products and offer reasonable prices as it is important for us that guests that visit for the first time plan to come back again. I believe that it is vitally important for the owner to be involved in all restaurant activities, including communicating with the customers and that is why I personally welcome restaurant’s guests. Do you have any advice for those brave enough to start their own restaurant business?

picturesque mountain in Croatia I made a wish, one which I cherished for seven long years, and now it has thankfully come true. There are many restaurants in Lviv that offer Italian cuisine. What does your restaurant have that the others don’t? What is your speciality?

The clear highlight of Tartufo Trattoria is the famed Stefano Ferrara pizza oven – the first of its kind in Lviv. These ovens are made of tufa limestone, specially brought here from the base of Mount Vesuvius, and are individually handcrafted following ancient Neopolitan techniques. What is your favourite dish on the menu?

The Chief Cook at our restaurant is Italian – Davide Lagomarsino. The man is a living encyclopaedia. He has opened many restaurants in Europe and around the world – in Italy, in Australia, in the Czech Republic. He is currently planning to open another in London. He is a master of culinary arts and has prepared meals for many celebrities, including Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe. I shared my business plan with him and after visiting Lviv he concluded that there were no authentic Italian restaurants in the city. We have continued to work together since then. Davide taught us one important rule, which we try to follow: “We all are equals, however each of us has own work responsibilities, which should be tackled professionally”. Waiters have own responsibilities, as well as managers and director, so we all should do our jobs 100% well, with complete devotion. In my opinion it is very good rule. Also, Davide often notes: “Doesn’t matter, in personal life or in business, You should always stay positive. Everything You do, should be done with passion!” Somehow, subconsciously I always knew it, but I never focused on it. Now, each morning, while conducting trainings for the staff I also mention this idea of being positive, as I understand how truly important it is! When waiter welcomes our guests, it is a must to be hospitable and smiling. It’s common feature in Europe, while in USA smiling is already a lifestyle. Restaurant should have the right concept from the beginning, and of course, well-qualified staff, which is eager to develop and get better. Our Chief Cook insists that our restaurant should differ from others. That’s the big issue for us – for example, we shouldn’t have famous Caesar salad on the menu as it’s very trivial. We should be different in everything, from menu to interior.

Every dish on our menu is special, but my personal favourite is the risotto. I noticed how it is cooked in different countries, from simple and high-quality raw goods. Risotto is not an easy dish to cook correctly; rice should be a bit crispy, not fluffy. If the rice in the risotto is not “al dente” then it’s not a real risotto. At Tartufo, we offer our risotto with ceps, and of course, the main ingredients are the truffles. A restaurant is not just about the food, but also the atmosphere. In Italy, the restaurant owner often meets guests and from time to time sits down to chat with them. What is your opinion of these customs? On one vacation to Italy I visited a tiny restaurant with just 4 tables. There were photos of celebrities on the walls and the man who served me was the owner himself. I was really quite surprised, and pleasantly impressed. SO when I opened the restaurant, I really wanted guests to feel comfortable and be welcomed as a “dear guest”, not just an ordinary customer. Many venues in Lviv are created for tourists that have a short amount of time, where they can eat quickly and go off. We focussed on creating an atmosphere that will encourage our guests to stay longer. We have Radio-Italia to create a relaxing and authentic atmosphere and plan to do some live-streaming directly from Italy in the future.

I’m only just getting started, but I believe that you need to have great faith in what you do and you must have the passion and desire to bring your dream to life. And don’t forget about love – you should do everything with love – that’s the secret to success! For your restaurant business to be successful, you need to do a market evaluation before you begin. Find out about your competitors, clients, suppliers, and also do a comparative analysis by estimating the quality of your service. This analytical research will help you to avoid the troubles and traps of the restaurant industry. If you face any problem, you need to discuss and solve it. Never give up! As Steve Jobs once said, “If you work only for the sake of money, you will never be successful. If you work for the sake of the future, and with passion and motivation, success will come to you!” In Italy, a restaurant is often a family business. What about your restaurant? Does your family help? I have huge support from my family in all of my activities. My whole family – father, mother and my husband. My family puts a lot of efforts into helping me. Many ideas we discuss and plan together. Sometimes we decide who will play which role – like good cop / bad cop – and honestly, sometimes it’s not easy. The right thing to do is to find compromise. It is important to remember that the most important parts of family relations are respect, mutual understanding, and support. If you are lucky enough to have such support, all problems will be solved quickly and easily. What are your future plans for the restaurant? What novelties will Tartufo offer next? Tartufo Trattoria has many dreams and plans for the future, but you’ll have to have patience. Let’s not ruin the surprise and reveal all our secrets! However, I can tell you that we recently opened a delicious Confiserie Just! – in which all the sweets are made from authentic ingredients. We use only high-quality 74% dark chocolate from France. LVIV INTERVIEW Наш шеф-повар наголошує на тому, що ми повинні бути іншими, не такими як усі. У цьому і фішка. В нас не має бути в меню, наприклад, ніякого салату “Цезар”, тому що це банально. Ми повинні відрізнятись всім і дизайном теж. Родзинкою тратторії Tartufo є перша у Львові неаполітанська пічка для піци Stefano Ferrara. Усі печі Stefano Ferrara складені вручну із туфового каменю за старовинними неаполітанським технологіям. Камінь для їх виготовлення везуть аж з підніжжя Везувію. Ваша улюблена страва з меню? У нас кожна страва особлива, але я дуже люблю різотто. Оскільки бачила в різних країнах, як воно готується – з простих та якісних продуктів. У нас воно подається з білими грибами, і туди входить головний інгредієнт Італії – тартуфо (трюфеля). До речі, якщо захочете перевірити, чи правильно приготовлене різотто, то це зробити легко. Рис має розсипатись і бути “аль-денте”, якщо ж ні, то це вже не різотто. Тому рекомендую продегустувати наше різотто. Ресторан – це не лише їжа, але насамперед атмосфера. В Італії дуже часто власник ресторану сам зустрічає своїх гостей, може присісти за столик поспілкуватись з ними. Як ви ставитесь до таких звичаїв? Якось, відпочиваючи в Італії я відвідала дуже маленький ресторан на 4 столики. Там, побачила фотографії з зірками з різних країн світу і коли я зрозуміла, що ця людина, яка мене зараз обслуговує є власником, я була дуже здивована. У нас в Україні є дуже багато амбіцій, і в людей швидко ”виростає корона”, людина розуміє, що вона стала кимось, і треба, щоб під нею був хтось нижчий. Так от, відкриваючи цей ресторан, ми робили акцент на тому, щоб люди хотіли до нас повертатись, щоб кожен відчував себе тут бажаним гостем, а не ”споживачем”. Адже Львів більше розрахований на туристів, які швидко прийшли, поїли і пішли. Ми ж хочемо створити таку атмосферу, аби людям хотілося тут бути довше. У нас звучить радіо-Italia, також плануємо зробити пряму трансляцію з Італії. Мені дуже імпонує фраза одного польського режисера, а саме Кшіштофа Зануссі, який наголошує: ”Завжди смакуйте якісну їжу не поспішаючи, і так само з книгами та кіно”. Щодо кухні, то ми використовуємо справжні італійські продукти і ставимо демократичні ціни, тому що нам важливо, щоб людина яка прийшла сюди вперше, захотіла повернутись знову. Я вважаю, що дуже велике значення має те, щоб власники були відкритими до спілкування й залучені у цілому процесі ресторану, тому ми особисто зустрічаємо та проводжаємо наших гостей.

Успішним ресторанний бізнес буде тільки тоді, коли ви перед початком своєї роботи зробите абсолютний аналіз ринку – конкурентів, споживачів, постачальників, а також порівняльний аналіз щодо якості обслуговування. Такого роду аналітичне дослідження допоможе Вам уникнути підводних каменів і пасток, якими кишить даний сектор бізнесу. Якщо у Вас є якась проблема, її потрібно обговорити і вирішити, і ніколи не здаватись. Never Give Up!!!!!! Але важливо пам’ятати й про інше: одного разу прочитала Стіва Джобса, який говорив про те, що "якщо ви будете працювати тільки заради грошей, Ви ніколи не досягнете успіху, а якщо Ви будете працювати заради кращого майбутнього і з пристрастю, і з внутрішньою мотивацією, то успіх прийде до вас!".

В Італії ресторан – це дуже часто сімейна справа. Чи цей варіант – для вас? Є свої помічники? У сьогоднішній сфері діяльності маю велику підтримку з боку свого батька, мами та чоловіка. Задіяно багато зусиль та ресурсу моєї родини. Багато речей плануємо разом. Часом, ми вибираємо хто з нас яку роль повинний грати – хто поганий, а хто хороший поліцейський :). Скажу Вам чесно, це нелегко. Найправильніше – знайти золоту середину. І важливо пам’ятати, що головне у стосунках – це повага, взаєморозуміння і підтримка близьких людей. Якщо це є, тоді усі проблеми вирішаться набагато швидше та легше. Як з такою кількістю роботи знаходите час на відпочинок? Як любите відпочивати? Найголовніше для мене на сьогодні – це міцний сон. Зараз у мене дуже ненормований день. Але мене заряджають люди, з якими я працюю, яким я можу допомогти, які мене розуміють і слухають те, що я намагаюся до них донести. Заряджає підтримка мого чоловіка і родини, студентів, друзів. А у вільний час люблю кататися на лижах, море, гори, подорожі, а також зустрічі з друзями.

Box, World Series: Ukraine Tops Turkey in World Series The Lviv Circus was home to an entertaining sports event on February 12th when the World Series of Boxing (WSB) organised an event between The Otamans of Ukraine and the Turkey Conquerors. The home team took their name after the former army governors of the Cossacks, while the visiting team’s moniker was chosen to reflect a time of prosperity during that country’s rich cultural history. The WSB is a nation-based semi-professional boxing tournament. It is used both as a way to qualify for the Olympic boxing tournament (17 WSB boxers qualified for Rio 2016) and as a platform to develop before turning professional. The Otamans nearly captured the world title two years ago, falling to Kazakhstan in a tiebreak in the final. The Ukrainians were successful in Lviv, defeating the Turks by a score of 4:1. Nazar Kurotchyn (Light Fly), Oleh Dovhun (Bantam), Volodomyr Matviichuk (Light Welter), and Valerii Kharlamov (Middle) walked away as winners, while Denys Poyatskyka (Heavy) had to withdraw from injury, giving the Ukrainians there first loss so far this year. Coach Leonid Lokovksky was happy with the results, which left the team atop Group A above Cuba, Turkey, and China, and expects a repeat performance when they visit the experienced Cuba Domodores on March 31st.

Назви команд відображають славні періоди в історії обох народів, які часто не лише воювали але й торгували й обмінювались культурними цінностями. WSB – це міжнародна напів-професійна асоціація боксерів-любителів. Боксери, що виступають у цій асоціації можуть виступати на олімпійських іграх (17 боксерів WSB закваліфікувались на олімпіаду в Ріо де Жанейро 2016), а також готуватись до переходу у професіонали. "Українські отамани" ледь не здобули титул чемпіонів світу два роки тому, але програли команді Казахстану на тайбрейку у фіналі. Перемога Українців у Львові була переконливою, рахунок матчу – 4:1. Назар Куротчин (до 49 кг), Олег Довгун (до 54 кг), Володимир Матвійчук (до 64 кг) і Валерій Харламов (до 73 кг) здобули перемоги. У останньому поєдинку важковаговиків поступився наш Денис Пояцика: через травму не зміг завершити поєдинок проти Сейда Кесера. Головний тренер українців Леонід Лоївський був задоволений результатами, які виводять команду на перше місце групи А, де також знаходяться команди Куби, Туреччини й Китаю, і очікує повторення успіху в матчі з "Кубинськими приборкувачами" 31 березня. Sport Dance: Lviv Open Cup On February 14, Sport Complex “Gratsiya” played host to the Ukrainian Championship of Sport Dance – “Lviv – Lider 2016”. Lviv’s Lider Club of Modern Dance (director Irena Bous') brought together over 300 dance couples from around Ukraine together for this spectacular showing of the popular celebration of dance. Participants from Kyiv, Chernivtsi, Khmelnitsky, Odesa, Ternopil, Kharkiv, Sumy, Lviv presented dances in several age categories. As pleasant surprise came performances by dancers from Lviv region – Stryi, Drohobych, Boryslav, Zhovkva, Sambir, Chervonohrad and Zhydachiv. Experienced dancers vigorously competed for the “Lviv Open Cup” trophy. The most passionate dance duel was showcased in Standard program in which the final winners became Roman Bukhta and Mariya Galay (Sport club Eurodance)

Figure Skating: Lviv Region Open Championship The skating rink in Novoyavorivsk was home for the Lviv Region Open Figure Skating Championship over the January 28-30 weekend. Over 200 of the country’s finest figure skaters from across Ukraine’s 14 regions competed with athletes from Moldova, Belarus, and even Japan to claim the prestigious prizes. Skaters from a number of different age categories competed in events for: men’s singles, ladies’ singles, pairs, and ice dancing. The Leopolitan skaters were led by coach Susana Khachatryan and featured children who have recently moved to Lviv from Donetsk. The Lviv regional figure skating school is located in Novoyavorivsk and is open for children aged 3 to 15.

Понад 200 найкращих фігуристів з 14 областей України змагалися зі спортсменами з Молдови, Білорусі та навіть Японії за престижні нагороди. Фігуристи різних вікових категорій змагалися в різних розрядах: чоловічому одиночному, жіночому одиночному, пари і танці на льоду. Львівські фігуристи виступали під керівництвом тренера Сусани Хачатрян; до команди також увійшли діти, які недавно переїхали до Львова з Донецька. Львівська обласна школа фігурного катання має свою базу в Новояворівську і відкрита для дітей віком від 3 до 15 років.

Kudo: Lion Cup 2016 Lviv’s Gratsyia Sport Complex played host to over 140 fighters from across Ukraine for the Lion Cup 2016 Kudo tournament organised by the Kudo Federation of Ukraine. Kudo is a mixed martial art that comprises full-contact punching, kicking, throwing, and ground submission techniques. It has its origins in Kakuto karate (combat karate), but is not just a mixed martial art that focuses on competition – it is a life-long sport, system for youth education, method of selfdefence, and healthy lifestyle model for adults. The sport stresses the ‘reigi’, or respect and etiquette in its tradition, and is popular in more than 60 countries worldwide.

KARPATY Hires Legend Luzhny as Manager

itting just 7 points back of 4thplace Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on the Ukrainian Premier League table, and the coveted Europa League qualification place that comes along with it, FC Karpaty has tapped Ukrainian football legend Oleh Luzhny as Manager ahead of the second half of the season. The Lviv-born Luzhny is popular amongst Ukrainian football fans after successful stints with Dynamo Kyiv, Arsenal, the Ukrainian national team, and Karpaty. He captained the national side a record 39 times and was named to the Ukrainian ‘Team of the Century’, receiving the fourth most votes after fellow legends Oleh Blokhin, Andriy Shevchenko, and Anatoly Demyanenko. He replaces Croatian coach Igor Jovicevic after the latter’s contract expired in January. Born in Lviv, Luzhny made his Soviet Premier League premiere with Torpedo Lutsk in 1985 before playing his lone season with his home squad in 1988. He then moved over to the legendary 90s Dynamo Kyiv squad that featured Shevchenko and Demyanenko and went on to capture the

Soviet domestic double in 1990 and seven straight Ukrainian league titles between 1993-99. At the same time, he had a prominent international career, cracking the Soviet national team at 20 years old and playing 52 times for the Ukrainian national team. After captaining the Dynamo Kyiv squad that made it to the Champions League semi-finals in 1999, he moved over to English Premier League squad

Arsenal. He won a further double with Arsenal in 2002 before winding his playing days down and beginning his managerial career. Most recently, he led Tavriya Simferopol to an 11th-place finish in 2012-13. Luzhny will hope to guide Karpaty to its first European competition since 2011-12, when the team fell to Greek side PAOK in a playoff to qualify for the Europa League group stages.

The Man with the Plan: British-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce to Open Office in Lviv contemporary Ukraine faces. He doesn’t just complain about inconsistencies or lack of progress though; he has concrete ideas of where Ukraine can improve. He is, after all, the Man with the Plan.

Trains, Trade & Tourists: The 3-Point Plan

hen it comes to foreigners knowing a thing or two about Ukraine, few understand the country better than Bate C. Toms. Heading the oldest Western law office in the country, this Yale & Cambridge-educated lawyer has been working in the country for 25 years. In that time he’s rubbed shoulders with some of this country’s most powerful – from politicians to celebrities, from business leaders to athletes – and has stories to share about them all. He also has some well-researched ideas on what Ukraine should do next, including right here in Lviv. Lviv Today sat down with Toms in advance of the opening of the new British-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce (BUCC) office in Lviv.

The Man with the Plan: Bate C. Toms Bate C. Toms knows Ukraine. Having lived and worked in the country since before independence was declared from the Soviet Union, he’s seen all Ukraine’s ups and downs, experienced all of its stunted starts, and has the battle scars and sagacious stories that come along with it. Arriving in the heady days of Gorbachev’s glasnost-era Soviet Union, Toms fondly recalls being the first Western lawyer to open up a presence in the country. He can also share some of the trials and tribulations of working here at that time, including when a competitor went to the government in an attempt to get his visa revoked (it backfired). But he can also speak of real achievements – both in terms of the country, and in professional terms. He lists initiating and handling the largest oil and gas investment in the history of Ukraine, as well as its largest agricultural deal, and of winning the country’s largest arbitration. He speaks in detail and with conviction on the legal and economic issues that

It’s simple as to why the BUCC plans to open offices in Lviv and Odesa – they hope to see both centres turn into linked transportation hubs. “The quickest way between China and Northern Europe is through Odesa”, argues Toms, who also serves as BUCC Chairman. To that end, the BUCC has supported port reforms in the Black Sea city and is trying to facilitate the organisation of rail guage transfer stations and private freight railways in Lviv Oblast to handle the additional shipping that a reformed port is expected to attract. “This will be a big business for Lviv,” he added, before musing that “along with Lviv’s wonderful airport, it could turn the city into a freight hub.” But where the man really lights up is when he speaks about where he believes Lviv’s comparative advantage really lies, and that is in tourism.

Brits on the Rynok: How the BUCC can help Lviv While Leopolitans, and those that have visited our great city, know full well how much of a tourist gem Lviv already is, Toms argues that not only is Lviv relatively unknown in Europe, but that when it is known it tends to be unfairly tainted by Russian media propaganda as a dangerous place swarming with rightwing radicals. That view of one of the world’s most beautiful cities “needs to be erased”, argues Toms, while adding that Lviv should become a leader at projecting a positive image of Ukraine abroad. He offers a comparison with the Polish city of Krakow and rattles off numbers to support his view – 4.2 million through their airport last year, over $2 billion into their economy – “We think Lviv can do better”. He believes that tourism will inject “huge amounts” of money into both the Lviv and Ukrainian economies and knows just how the BUCC can help:

1. Help foreigners learn about Lviv; 2. Get foreigners to come here; 3. Organise direct flights from London and elsewhere to get them here. He explains that the BUCC is engaging the leading British travel PR firm to manage the project, and points out that this will be in cooperation with the Lviv City Administration and Lviv Chamber of Commerce – and funded solely by private fundraising – so that, importantly, there will be “no cost to Lviv”. “We want people to come to Lviv for the excellent accommodations, the delicious food, the incredible sights, all the cathedrals and churches, and the medieval city centre”, he explains, and “We feel we can make a great contribution because London is the biggest tourist market in Europe.”

From Networking to Investing: BUCC connects companies Neither Toms nor the BUCC are strangers to Lviv. Toms has held a law office presence in the city for years, while the BUCC is proud to host the annual opening luncheon for the Lviv’s popular Alpha Jazz Festival. In addition to trains, trade, and tourism, he lists a number of ways the BUCC plans to be part of the Lviv community: from building links between companies, to attracting investment, to hosting regular networking events and information seminars, to educational events on business and business-related activities. In addition to the work in Lviv, the BUCC has a number of other objectives on their plate. One is to increase the availability of political risk insurance in the country, while the other is to introduce a Western-style legal ombudsman that can receive complaints on unjust legal decisions and make formal recommendations on disciplining judges responsible for hearing those cases. Without a more trustworthy legal system, he argues, it will be difficult to attract investments. And while speaking passionately – and persuasively – on both issues, you can tell his heart lies in the Western Ukrainian capital. “I expect to spend a lot of time in the city developing tourism,” says Toms, “Actually, I’m looking at buying some premises right now.” For more information on the British Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce, please contact Bate C. What opportunities does Unlimit Ukraine give for entrepreneurs? Firstly I would like to say that despite European Business Association great experience this project is new for us also. We usually work for large international and Ukrainian business, but this initiative is available for microbusiness. So while creating the platform for young entrepreneurs we will try to correspond to their requests. Now we propose two ways of common work – education and informational support. The project has a scheduled set of actions, measures and activities that will help business owners to more efficiently develop their operations. This support includes training and workshops, meetings with owners and managers of successful companies, consulting in finance, taxation, access to foreign markets and more. In order to promote our Ukrainian producers we also launched special competition in which 20 winners will have opportunity to get free internet advertising. We are preparing several actions during the following year. For whom is Unlimit Ukraine and how to participate? The project aims to support young, aspiring Ukrainian producers, who started their activities in the national market only recently but already show great potential. This initiative will stimulate the development of small businesses in Ukraine. To participate in the project, we invite young, high-potential entrepreneurs who produce quality goods on the territory of Ukraine more than 7 years and who want to improve the quality and scope of Ukrainian business. Applicant companies must be transparent and official businesses which are ready and willing to work with European standards in Ukraine. We want to support micro and small businesses in Ukraine, their development and to help them to survive. It’s difficult to set up your business but it’s more difficult to develop it. We hope to become reliable assistant for our entrepreneurs. Speaking about global goal of the project I should say that it is the same as the goal of EBA – make Ukraine a better place for business. Tell us more about the program: how long it will last? Currently this project is planned for one year. So we have a lot to do. We have already received a lot of letters with support and feedbacks on the relevance of the project and the willingness of our members to support this initiative, so now we are thinking about the possibility of its future extension. Where you will organize events for project participants? Only in Kyiv or all around Ukraine?

This question is critical not only for small businesses and indeed for the whole business in Ukraine in general. The European Business Association is always engaged and deals with these issues. As for the project Unlimit Ukraine, we have a clear rule of participation in the project. Each participant must have formal business. Each of our participants is officially registered entrepreneur. So we encourage micro-business to work legally and transparently from the beginning. What result can be considered as successful completion of the Unlimit Ukraine project? What will businesses get at the end of the project? It’s difficult to say about the concrete results. For each entrepreneur it will be measured in different terms. Some of them will find business partners, some will become more popular among consumers, someone will enter the foreign market, and some businesses will adjust their work from A to Z. The main thing is that our members will continue their activities and will reach a new higher level.

Yes, first of all we plan to cover Kyiv. We started on January 14th 2016 with our project so it’s quiet difficult and early to say something about other regions. We have EBA offices in Lviv, Kharkiv, Odessa and Dnipropetrovsk, and the applicant’s involvement in the project from other regions is very large so we will work in this direction. If it is ok, please share some numbers of project. How many applicants do you have now and how many you expect in future? We have already received over 200 applications from different companies, but as I said, we made a selection of participants, so only 60 companies were added to the catalog. How many we expect? We do not have any limitation on the number of participants so we invite all who will meet the criteria of the project and to whom it can be useful. EBA COMMITTEES ACTIVITY IN JANUARY In January EBA Western Ukrainian Office actively started its committee activities from the beginning of the year.

LEGAL COMMITTEE A lot of Ukrainian banks are in the process of bankruptcy now and both the debtors and creditors suffer from the uncertainty of this process. Thus Natalia Anokhina, Legal Committee Head, had conducted special Legal Committee Meeting and gave the participants general overview of the banks liquidation procedure and the role of the Deposit Guarantee Fund. In addition she pointed out the consequences of bank’s insolvency for the debtors, creditors and gave the examples of court practice and legal means of defense. Besides, the participants discussed possible ways of improving or clarifying the process within banks liquidation and protection of client’s rights.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Due to Alina Boychuk, Management Committee Head and Ruslana Rudnitska, co-head of Dutch-Ukrainian project on internal control and internal audit introduction in Ukraine we discussed the internal audit and internal control in the context of Ukraine’s obligations towards European integration at the Management Committee. Together we came to conclusion that internal control is the philosophy of manager or way of thinking but not an additional structure or external financial adviser. The internal audit is the process of analysing of the quality and effectiveness of internal control and special tool, which helps to prevent management risks, including financial.

TAX & ACCOUNTING COMMITTEE From the 1st of January 2016 new changes in the Tax Code of Ukraine came into force. The tax changes usually are the hot topic among the different business communities. All EBA companies had already experienced some pros and cons of these innovations. That is why Maksym Voytsekhovsky, manager of Lviv KPMG office together with his colleagues Nazar Halko and Halyna Bednarchuk were invited by Ihor Pikhurko, Tax & Accounting Committee Head to give an overview of the main issues faced by our companies at the Tax & Accounting Committee meeting. Despite some remarks on non-compliance of Tax Code adoption procedure and the need certain provisions clarification the participants mentioned some positive changes for companies, for example, reduction of Single Social Contribution.

New rules regarding Transfer Pricing issues Markian Malskyy, PhD Partner at Arzinger Law Firm, attorney-at-law

Q: Dear all, please advice on recent changes in tax legislation regulating transfer pricing issues introduced within the tax reform? In particular, I am conducting certain non-direct sales of production abroad through non-resident commissioners, which are non-related companies. Please, inform me if such operations deemed to be controlled and if the transfer pricing regulation issues are applicable to such kind of transactions? There actually were some changes introduced in Article 39 of the Tax Code of Ukraine regulating transfer pricing issues, which were set out in a new wording. The most urgent issue in the relevant area is that the threshold for recognizing transactions as controlled ones has been lowered. Thus, business transactions with certain contractors are deemed controlled, if the following conditions are satisfied simultaneously: • the total volume of income of a taxpayer and/or of its related persons from all types of activities allowed for in determining the assessment base for corporate tax exceeds 20 UAH million for the relevant fiscal (reporting) year; • the volume of the group of such commercial transactions of a taxpayer and/or of its related persons with one contractor exceeds UAH 1 million (net of VAT) or 3 % of income allowed for in determining the taxpayer’s corporate tax object for the relevant fiscal (reporting) year. The scope of related persons is expanded. In particular, individuals and legal entities shall now be recognized as related persons, if the total amount of all loans (borrowings) and repayable financial aid granted by them to a legal entity exceeds 3.5 times the amount of equity. At the legislative level, the "arm’s length" principle is introduced for transfer pricing purposes. The definition of this term stipulates that the volume of taxable income obtained by a taxpayer participating in one or more controlled transactions shall be deemed compliant with the "arm’s length" principle, if the terms of the above transactions are not different from those applied between non-related persons in comparable uncontrolled transactions. Please, also note that operations with non-residents from certain states (mostly offshores), included into the list of states determined by CMU, even if such non-residents are not related person are also considered as controlled ones. Under the amendments, the list of controlled transactions has been extended. Thus, business transactions on the sale of goods through non-resident commissioners (including those other than related persons) are considered as controlled ones as well.

All Aboard! RIDING THE LVIV TO BUDAPEST TRAIN

ravelling from Lviv to Budapest with Ukraine Railways is a real pleasure. The international train and carriage itself carries a fine sense of romance and intrigue from a bygone era with its graceful, old-fashioned décor and charm. This daytime venture takes you through two contrasting lands – the spectacular Carpathians hills and valleys of Ukraine and the majestic Puszta flatlands of Hungary – before arriving at Budapest approximately 14 hours later. It is worth noting that in either direction the service no longer operates overnight, unless one travels to or from Kyiv.

There is generally no need to purchase tickets in advance, as it is usually sufficient to buy a ticket close to departure. The early morning Lviv to Budapest train service departs at 6:30am. After showing documents to the officials, you’ll be shown to your compartment. Tickets are available in three classes: 1st-class is called Deluxe (Liuks), which has larger beds and bathrooms

with all the fixings; 2nd-class is called Coupe (Kupe), and features four beds in a lockable compartment; and 3rd-class is called Platzkart and features an open compartment with 6 beds, with two located separately across from the others. Fresh linen and blankets are provided, and you can stretch out on the makeshift beds. Teas and coffees are also served, for a nominal price, by the hospitable cabin crew throughout the journey.

CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS: THE UKRAINIAN ROUTE Travelling southward through the Carpathians is an event at any time of year. The scenery is most spectacular as the sun rises over the gracious valleys and the incredibly tall alpine trees. Alongside the wooden houses and churches that dot the landscape from Skole to Volovets, locals work the land in more traditional ways, giving a traveller the sense of stepping back in time. LVIV TRAVEL and calm of the valleys, before arriving onto the Mukachevo flatlands with the picturesque Palanok Castle in full view. The train chugs into the Chop border near 11:00am. In terms of distance, one is about half way with the journey. In terms with the schedule, this is not so! As one must contend with the border. THE BORDER: THE JOURNEY WITHIN THE JOURNEY The Chop border guards and customs authorities will step on board and take your passport away for inspection. There is no need to get off the train – or even leave your compartment – as they will return your documents before the train embarks further south. The international carriages are disconnected and moved away from the station platform to go through a rigorous procedure of changing wheels to adapt to the narrower CET railway lines. For train enthusiasts this is fascinating, as one can see all from the window, as each carriage is lifted separately. This, understandably, takes time. Be aware that for safety and security reasons, passengers are not allowed to disembark the carriage. Be sure to bring enough food and water for the journey as this is a great time to have your lunch! THE PUSZTA FLATLANDS: THE HUNGARIAN ROUTE The train finally begins rolling out of the station to leave Ukraine and proceed toward the majestic River Tsva into Hungary at approximately 14:20. At this point, be sure to set your watches back one hour as you move into the Central European time zone. After about 15 minutes, the train arrives at the Hungarian

border town of Zahony. After a quick check of your documents by the Hungarian authorities, and after connecting the local carriages, the train departs around 14:00. There are further stops along the way at Nyiregyhaza, Debrecen, and Szolnok before sauntering toward the Budapest sunset. A few local suburban stops later and you should arrive at the Budapest Nyugati train station a little more than four hours later at 18:37. SIGHTSEEING TIP: CYCLING THE CARPTHIANS For those independent-minded travellers looking for an excellent sightseeing detour, I recommend exiting the train at Volovets and cycling 70 kilometres eastward to Lake Synevyr. Travelling deep into the quiet wilderness along meandering roads, you’ll arrive at this mystical wonder, steeped in history and atmosphere. Be sure to discover the Syn and Evyr legends that were once so familiar to Shakespeare – they will live with you forever! Three days should be budged to complete this tour round-trip. Accommodation is available by the lake, but reservations should be made beforehand. Careful planning, nice weather, and a good bicycle are also must-dos. Should the hills and valleys be too demanding, the Mukachevo to Debrecen flatland route, via the bicyclefriendly Berehovo border, is a fine replacement. The roads are rather quiet and it is great fun to cycle alongside the storks! If cycling is not your thing, you can always book a package tour to Lake Synevyr, or any of the Carpathians’ many other highlights, at any of Lviv’s tourist agencies. FOR MORE ADVENTUROUS TRAVELLERS… For those that are looking to save a little money, or are not interested in spending a few hours at the border, I suggest travelling from Lviv to Budapest with a series of local trains. Get a ticket from Lviv to Chop and, after arriving, purchase a border-crossing ticket to Hungary (Zahony). You’ll then go through customs before getting on the train to the Hungarian border, where the Hungarian authorities will check your documents while still on the train. Once the procedure is finished, pick up a Zahony to Budapest ticket and you’ll be on your way. It can be tricky to change Ukrainian hryvnias at the Zahony station, so try to bring some local currency (Hungarian forints), a credit card, or dollars or euros. Whether it’s Lviv’s distinguished architecture, the inspiring Carpathian mountains, the rolling Puszta flatlands, or the river city of Budapest, fine cultural wonders abound on this classic, fairy-tale journey. World’s First Egg-Shaped

Pysanka Coin T

he Royal Canadian Mint issued a 1 oz. pure silver “Traditional Ukrainian Pysanka” coin – the first egg-shaped coin issued by the mint – on February 20th. The colourful coin captures the intricate beauty of the pysanka – one of the most beloved forms of traditional Ukrainian folk art! Beautifully handcrafted, the carefully decorated Easter egg is a veritable trove of symbolism – each motif and colour carries a different meaning. The tradition predates Christianity and is a powerful protective emblem; for it is said that as long as pysanky are made, good will continue to prevail over evil.

The Canadian coin features large flowers at the top and bottom of the egg which are meant to symbolize love, goodwill and nature’s beauty. These are framed by bands of waves that speak to water’s life-giving properties and the idea of eternity. Beneath the waves at the top are stylised depictions of the sun and stars that indicate life, fortune, and growth. In the centre, there are evergreen boughs that represent eternal health and youth. The unique coin was designed by Canadian Pysanka artist of Ukrainian origin Ann C. Morash and is set to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian Settlement in Canada. This specially-minted collector’s coin has a face value of $20 CAD and sells for $114.95 CAD ($85 USD).
