Lviv Puts the ‘World’

into ‘World Class’ City So what is it that makes a city world class? Is it spectacular architecture and interesting museums? Or maybe it’s bustling sidewalk cafes in an historic city square? Lviv Welcomes the Sporting World A true world class city has the ability to attract some of the world’s most sought after sporting competitions. After Lviv was put on the world’s sporting map for hosting matches during the EURO 2012 football tournament, the future of sport in the city looked bright. But the city’s plans to host part of the EuroBasket tournament and to host the winter sporting world during the 2022 Winter Olympic Games were put on hold after the events of 2012-13. That hasn’t stopped the city from attracting world class sporting events though – just this month Lviv’s-own Mariya Muzychuk defended her World Champion crown at the Women’s World Chess Championship at the dazzling Potocki Palace, while Lviv’s adopted football stars from Donetsk Shakhtar continue to romp through the Europa League, dispatching Germany’s Schalke and cruising past Belgium’s Anderlecht here at Arena Lviv. LVIV FASHION WEEK: AUTUMN / WINTER 2016 SHOW Lviv Fashion Week’s Autumn/Winter 2016 edition is all set to roll its red carpet into town from March 24-27. This glamorous staple of Lviv’s fashion calendar will once again take place at the Danylo Halytskyi International Airport, as well as at locations across the city, including: the Astoria Hotel, the Leopolis Hall, and the Under the Arsenal market. Events are set to kick off on March 23rd with the presentation of Kateryna Karol’s latest collection at the Under the Arsenal market. This season Lviv Fashion Week welcomes its newest host location, as the Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum will host its first event with a Tata Kalita fashion show on March 25th.

As always, the event will feature many of Ukraine’s most renowned designers, including: Roksolana Bogutska, OKSANA MUKHA

by Kateryna Yalova, Lesia Semi, and Marta Wachholz. Other Ukrainian designers to be featured at the event include: Kyiv’s Chernika, Ivano-Frankivsk’s Chernikova, Odesa’s Sofitie, Mykolaiv’s Natalia Grechana, Vinnytsia’s Snezhana Gorobets, and Lviv’s-own NAT. Once again, in partnership with the Fashion Philosophy Fashion Week Poland, LFW will present collections by famed Polish designers Waleria Tokarzewska-Karaszewicz and Klaudia Markiewicz.

Belarus’ Anastasiya Rozova, a finalist at the SABOTAGE Young Designers Contest, will present her debut collection during the festivities.

Other Belarussian designers, such as Natalia Ligorova, Kira Algina, and Anton Yaroshchyk, will participate in the OFF Schedule fashion shows, scheduled for March 24th at the Under the Arsenal market. Another highly-anticipated event will feature the presentation of the latest collection from Georgia’s VASKA, slated for March 25th at the Astoria Hotel.

UKRAINIAN EASTER EGG FESTIVAL April 1st – May 8th, 1 Muzeina Square Just in time for Easter, Leopolitans and guests of the city have the wonderful opportunity to explore the art, symbolism, and joy of creating pysanky – the Ukrainian Easter Eggs that are decorated by using beeswax and dyes applied in layers. Festivalgoers will have the chance to see some of the country’s most beautifully-adorned eggs as well as to learn about this centuries-old art form at a variety of workshops.

The symbolism of pysanky is marked by its blend of ancient rituals and Christian traditions. Spring is a time for release from the

confines of winter and the physical rebirth of nature, while Easter celebrates the Resurrection of Christ and the spiritual rebirth of man. With Ukraine’s acceptance of Christianity in 988, the pagan ritual of pysanky became part of the tradition and ritual of Easter in Ukraine and later in other Slavic nations.

The decorated eggs came to be treasured as religious mementos. Today, the traditional Ukrainian motifs drawn by hand on eggs have become an integral part of the Easter celebration in Ukraine. With Orthodox Easter taking place in the country on May 1st,

Ukrainians all around the country will again indulge in the ancient art form and cultural experience of decorating eggs together with their families. The pysanky decorating process is rather straightforward, although keeping a steady hand can be a challenge unto itself. Festivalgoers will have a variety of artistic and interactive activities to take part in, although surely the highlight of the festival will be when all of the pysanky created during the festivities are displayed in an exhibition. Popular Ukrainian singer and spinto soprano Jamala, who will represent Ukraine at EuroVision this May, will bring her unique combination of jazz, soul, rhythm & blues, and classical music to Lviv’s dazzling Opera and Ballet Theatre on April 12th. The singer is well known in Ukraine, having starred in ‘The Guide’ – Ukraine’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2014 Academy Awards – and having nearly represented the country at 2011 EuroVision contest with her catchy hit ‘Smile’. She won this year’s national competition with ‘1944’, a song inspired by the tragic story of the deportation of her great-grandmother and many other Crimean Tatar families that shared the same fate. The song is set to be the first to ever feature the Crimean Tatar language at the event. Today Jamala lives in Kyiv, but she was born in the city of Osh (Kyrgyzstan).

She majored in opera singing at Kyiv’s Tchaikovsky National Music Academy while at the same time experimenting with other musical genres, including: jazz, soul, and ethno (Crimean Tatar, Armenian, etc.). The turning point in her career came with her performance at the New Wave 2009 international contest for young pop singers. Jamala walked away with the grand prize, wowing the jury with her outstanding vocal talent and confident stage presence in a variety of musical styles. Lviv’s hopping hotspot Picasso Nightclub is pleased to present Ukrainian painter, poet, playwright, and performer Les Poderviansky on March 27th in a witty performance of his plays that is sure to both challenge and delight Leopolitans and guests of the city. Poderviansky is famous for his absurd, highly satirical, and at times politically incorrect and obscene short plays. His works are highly regarded due to his attention to detail and guests will be able to recognise themselves in one of the characters’ easily recognisable behavioural models. The general absurdity of their situations makes their bizarre actions more acceptable, and although the language can be risqué, the humour is generally neutral. Poderviansky’s works have often been criticised due to his use of vulgar language. Sometimes his plays include so much swearing and obscenities that it appears as though they have been written by an uneducated person. This, of course, isn’t the case as he cites Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Taoism, and even Zen Buddhism in the different intellectual layers of his works. A number of Poderviansky’s expressions have entered the Ukrainian lexicon, as he uses crude language to show the flaws and grotesqueness of his characters. He has a cult following among Ukrainians – in particular among Leopolitan intellectuals – and maybe after this concert, you’ll join them! Зелена, 88) Знаний український художник, поет, драматург Лесь Подерв'янський 27 березня у клубі "Пікассо" потішить львів’ян і гостей міста виконанням своїх дотепних п'єс. Лесь Подерв'янський відомий своїми абсурдними, сатиричними, а часом політично некоректними і непристойними короткими п'єсами. Твори Подерв'янського високо цінуються за його увагу до деталей. Багато його персонажів просто типові, і люди впізнають себе у спектаклях. Загальна абсурдність ситуації робить дивні дії персонажів більш прийнятними, і хоча деякі фрази є надто цинічними, його гумор, як правило, нейтральний. Творчість Подерв'янського часто зазнавала критики за використання вульгарної нецензурної мови. Іноді у п'єсах звучить багато лайки і непристойностей, і може скластись враження, ніби їх писала людина неосвічена, однак це не так. Численні цитати з Шекспіра, Ніцше та східної філософії відкривають глибинні шари у його творах. Низка виразів Подерв'янського, які він використовує, щоб показати недоліки і гротескність своїх героїв, увійшли в сучасну українську мову, мову інтелектуалів, що прагнуть самовираження бодай же чужим коштом. LVIV OUTSOURCING FORUM March 26th, Dnister Hotel (6 Mateika St.) The 9th annual Lviv Outsourcing Forum, which brings together owners and managers of outsourcing companies with freelancers from across Ukraine, is set to be held at Lviv’s Hotel Dnister on March 26th. The event will be preceded by the Lviv Freelance Forum which will bring together freelancers and companies with up to 20 employers on March 25th. INTERNATIONAL STUDENT MEDIA SYMPOSIUM March 31 – April 1, the Ukrainian Catholic University (35A Khutorivka St.) The Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU)’s School of Journalism and Media Communications invites you to take part in the 3rd annual International Student Media Symposium (SMS) to be held in the city on March 31 – April 1. This year’s theme is “Media in the Conflict Area: Changes & Challenges”. The SMS is an academic platform for the exchange of ideas, projects, and results of media research among young scholars, journalists, and leading media experts from Ukraine and abroad. LVIV REGION BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS April 2nd, 15:00 at the G. Hotkevych Palace of Culture (1 Kushevyscha St.) Some of Western Ukraine’s strongest and fittest athletes will be in the city on April 2nd to compete in a bodybuilding showdown to determine the winner of the Lviv Region Bodybuilding Open Cup Championship. Bodybuilding was a relatively unknown pastime in the Soviet Union, but it has been enthusiastically embraced since the collapse of the USSR. Ukrainian bodybuilders and fitness performers have made their mark at the world level and the country remains among the most competitive in the modern sport.

Perhaps the most striking star of the local bodybuilding school is Oksana Brygidyr.

After winning the European Championships and Olympia Prague events in 2015, she travelled to Budapest for the IFBB World Fitness Championship. There she won both rounds to claim the gold medal and has since become a great inspirational example for all beginner bodybuilders. ICON JAMALA SET TO REPRESENT UKRAINE AT EUROVISION The Russian occupation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula looks set to become one of the talking points of the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest after Ukrainian TV viewers selected Crimean Tatar singer Jamala’s haunting ballad ‘1944’ to represent the country at this year’s event.

Although ostensibly a tribute to the victims of the 1944 Soviet mass deportation of the Crimean Tatars, the song will inevitably draw international attention to the ongoing plight of the Crimean Tatars, who have suffered a range of human rights abuses since the Russian seizure of Crimea in early 2014.

A NATION OF EUROVISION CONNOISSEURS Ukrainians take Eurovision seriously. The annual race to see who will represent the country attracts significant media attention and is the subject of heated debate. Many of the country’s top pop performers compete for the privilege of singing Ukraine’s entry, and they tend go on to do well in the finals. Lviv legend Ruslana famously won Eurovision in 2004 with her ‘Wild Dances’, while drag act Verka Serdyuchka became the most memorable runner-up in the competition’s history with his iconic 2007 eurotrash disco classic ‘Russia Goodbye’.

The 2016 national competition was particularly heavily laden with expectations. The hyper-patriotic Ukrainian response to Russia’s ongoing hybrid war helped amplify the excite-

ment surrounding this year’s selection process, with millions tuning in to the televised semi-finals and final of the 2016 contest. Jamala eventually won by virtue of overwhelming TV viewer support, claiming the largest share of almost 400,000 individual phone votes.

Her victory in the national selection process should guarantee Ukraine a generous share of the limelight at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden. While Eurovision is supposed to be completely apolitical, Jamala’s thinly veiled political anthem will attract considerable attention in the buildup to the contest. Eurovision organizers have ruled that the song does not breach the ban on political content, setting the stage for a flurry of press coverage as the May event draws closer.

SHOWCASING THE NEW UKRAINE The international media coverage Jamala is already attracting could well prove a significant PR victory for Ukraine as well as a considerable embarrassment for the Kremlin. As a practicing Muslim and a member of an ethnic minority, Jamala is in many ways the ideal person to represent the multicultural tolerance and inclusiveness of the new Ukraine.

She is also the perfect antidote to Kremlin scare stories about marauding Ukrainian Nazi hordes.

From a Russian point of view, she could hardly be less suitable. Russian politicians have already called on Eurovision to ban Jamala’s song. It is not difficult to see why they object so strongly. As well as debunking the myth of fascist Ukraine, Jamala’s presence as Ukraine’s representative at Eurovision 2016 will also serve to remind European audiences that not everyone in Crimea cheered the Russian takeover. The deteriorating plight of the Crimean Tatar community in the occupied peninsula has already become a focus of international concern. The attention Jamala garners will only add to this process.

STALIN'S CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY The song’s subject matter is also an awkward choice for the Kremlin. Vladimir Putin has made the glorification of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany one of the cornerstones of his efforts to rebuild Russian national pride in the wake of the 1991 communist collapse. This has necessitated the partial rehabilitation of Stalin. As a result, new monuments to the Soviet dictator are currently popping up across Russia, while his portrait is on prominent public display throughout the Kremlin’s puppet republics in east Ukraine. Jamala’s powerful ballad will highlight one of Stalin’s many industrial-scale atrocities – the mass deportation of approximately a quarter of a million Crimean Tatars in 1944. Jamala’s family were among the victims, adding extra poignancy to her performance. Relatively few Europeans are fully aware of the Soviet Union’s crimes against humanity, but Jamala’s song may lead to greater interest in the subject. At the very least, it will introduce a new generation of viewers to the idea that Hitler was not the only genocidal maniac terrorizing Europe in the 1940s.

KEEPING OCCUPIED CRIMEA IN THE SPOTLIGHT Can Jamala’s historically pregnant and geopolitically loaded tune actually win the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest?

Critics have argued that it is the wrong fit for a competition better known for its kitsch glamor and bubblegum pop. This assessment may prove to be true, but as columnists across the continent look for material to fill their Eurovision 2016 previews, Ukraine’s Crimean Tatar entry is likely to be a particularly popular theme. This will be a victory in itself, raising Ukraine’s international profile and reflecting the country’s diversity while highlighting the realities of Putin’s hybrid war.

Taking Flight LVIV'S-OWN ULYANA BARABASH ON PLANES, POLOS, AND PATRIOTISM

F

or some, Lviv is known as Ukraine’s capital of chocolate, for others it’s coffee; but make no mistake – Lviv is also the country’s fashion capital. The city is home to some of the nation’s most respected fashion designers, including the young, talented and beautiful Ulyana Barabash. Already having made a name for herself in the Ukrainian fashion world – her lines have been a staple at fashion shows for years – Barabash set out to create something intensely personal: a high-end, made-inUkraine fashion line that would promote Western Ukrainian values abroad.

She banded together with several others that shared a love of the sky to form Aviatsiya Halychyny (Galician Aviation), a brand inspired by the modern Ukrainian Air Force that offers a full array of fashionable polo shirts for men, women,

and children. Each collection is made of firstrate material, is manufactured right here in Ukraine, and includes embroidered patches and information about Ukraine’s air forces. Subtly featuring the logos and technical or historical information about Ukrainian air brigades, the shirts have a sleek and modern feel while still paying homage to Ukraine’s flying warriors. Other collections prominently showcase names of major Ukrainian cities, including Lviv, Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Odesa, making them worldclass gifts for friends and family that travel to or live in one of the centres.

This month, in advance of the national rollout of the Aviatsiya Halychyny brand, Lviv Today sat down with this cutting-edge, home-grown fashionista and talked about planes, polos, and patriotism.

Western Ukraine isn’t widely known for its powerful air force, so why choose the aviation theme? How was Aviatsiya Halychyny created?

Last May, some friends and I – in particular Yurko Nazaruk, the co-creator of the !FEST Emotions Holding – decided to launch the brand for those people that want to “spread their wings”. Yurko is a huge aviation fan – he often flies a paratrike and simply adores the sky – so theme wasn’t random, it was really part of our lives. At the beginning, we were hoping to take it easy and have fun, with clothing featuring gags and jokes, but the circumstances in the country changed so the beginning wasn’t easy at all. Our team managed to create original polos from scratch that are truly unique in modern-day Ukraine. We completely design each polo and stitch it together using the LVIV TODAY | March 2016

В травні минулого року ми разом із друзями, зокрема зі співзасновником Холдингу емоцій !FEST Юрком Назаруком, вирішили створити бренд одягу Aviatsiya Halychyny, для тих, хто відчуває крила за спиною, або хотів би. Тим більше, Юрко сам не байдужий до авіації – багато літає на паратрайку, любить польоти і небо. Тож тема не випадкова, це частинка нашого життя. Спочатку ми хотіли, щоб це було весело, з жартами і каламбурами, але потім обставини змінилися. На початку не все було легко й просто, адже майже з нічого команда змогла розробити унікальні поло, що не мають аналогів на сьогоднішній день в Україні. Ми повністю розробили дизайн поло, самі пошили його вручну з тканини, яка є тої ж якості, що шиють поло всесвітньо відомі бренди. Коли люди, які вперше чують про нас, одягають наш одяг, то часто не вірять, що це справді зроблено в Україні.

Кожна колекція виробляється в Україні і виготовлена з високоякісних тканин, а також прикрашена авторською вишивкою та шевронами з інформацію про українські ВПС. Емблеми українських авіаційних бригад й технічна або історична інформація, якими оздоблені поло й футболки, мають сучасний вигляд і в той же час віддають данину захисникам нашого неба. У інших колекціях використовуються назви великих міст України, зокрема, Львова, Києва, Івано-Франківська та Одеси, що робить їх особливими подарунками для друзів і рідних, які відвідують або живуть в одному з цих міст. Цього місяця, напередодні національної промоції бренду "Aviatsiya Halychyny", наша редакція зустрілась із цією молодою дизайнеркою та поспілкувалась про літаки, поло та патріотизм.

Наш логотип – це крила. І це вже дуже символічно! Разом з нашим одягом люди одягають крила. Наш одяг має сенс і має мету: він для тих і про тих, хто літає чи мріє літати. Наші колекції поло присвячені авіапідрозділам Західної України: 114-й бригаді тактичної авіації (ІваноФранківськ), 7-му (Бреславльському) окремому полку армійської авіації, 7-й бригаді тактичної авіації імені Петра Франка, 16-й бригаді, а ще Міжнародному аеропорту “Львів”, галицькому повітроплаванню і напівлегендарній Гуцульській космічній програмі. Останне, найновіше поло – “Серафим”, розроблено спільно з відомим українським художником Андрієм Єрмоленком. На сьогодні створено чоловічу і жіночу, а також дитячу колекції поло. Робота над новим одягом, натхненним авіацією, і не тільки, триває. Які складнощи чекали на Вас на початковому етапі – добір тканини, створення фасону чи можливо щось інше? Я напевно могла б написати книгу про труднощі, з якими ми зіткнулись при розробці кожної нової колекції – як було потрібно знайти українського виробника, який постачав би якісний матеріал, як були змушені купувати тканину гуртом, як у першій партії виробів втратила колір фірмова червона стрічка на комірці. Але я пишаюся проведеною пошуковою роботою, високою якістю матеріалів і тим, що в команді є справжній пілот. Показовим періодом для розвитку бізнесу був 2015 рік, коли стрімко зросла популярність одягу з колекцій Aviatsiya Halychyny. Це був найважливіший рік в моєму житті і він дався мені не легко.

Since opening its first store not even a year ago, Aviatsiya Halychyny has grown from a small start-up to a serious business production.

What happened during this time?

In addition to the brand’s online store, Aviatsiya Halychyny has an outlet located right in the centre of Lviv. What else is done to promote the brand’s clothing?

Aviatsiya Halychyny’s motto is “clothing that gives you wings”.

What does that mean to you personally?

As the political situation in Ukraine changed, so too did the development of the line. In 2014, our country underwent major changes. Due to the conflict in Eastern Ukraine, our Army also changed and modernised and we wanted to represent those changes through our clothing. We included more patriotic packaging, along with taglines such

We had to work 24 hours a day just to sew everything! After launching a sleek, bilingual (Ukr/Eng) website for online sales, the brand’s popularity has soared. I’m particularly proud of the response of Ukrainian pilots and servicemen, who frequently purchase polos and T-shirts for themselves and as gifts for colleagues. The company is now set to open sales locations across Ukraine, including later this month in central Dnipropetrovsk and in Kyiv’s posh Ocean Plaza.

What is your vision for the future of Aviatsiya Halychyny?

What interesting surprises are in store for your patrons this year?

We have no shortage of ideas for the future. The sky is not for everyone, some people prefer the land or even the sea. To that end, the company is kicking around a few ideas, including a line based on the Leopolis Grand Prix and a sea-themed collection featuring cities such as Odesa and Mykolaiv. We hope to expand from polos to other clothing as well, including long-sleeved polos, hoodies, jackets, and pants – all aviation-themed and resemabout the sky and flights! Our collections are dedicated to Western Ukrainian aviation, including: Ivano-Frankivsk’s 114th Tactical Aviation Brigade; Breslavlskyi’s 7th Separate Army Aviation Regiment; the 7th Petro Franko Tactical Aviation Brigade; the 16th Army Aviation Brigade; Lviv’s Danylo Halytskyy International Airport; Galician Aeronautics; and the “legendary” Hutsul Space Program. Our latest polo, Seraphim, was created jointly with famed Ukrainian artist Andriy Yermolenko. Currently we have collections for men, women, and children but we continue to work on new aviation-inspired clothing every week.

What difficulties did you encounter at the beginning? Was it hard to find premium material, create designs, or something else entirely?

I could probably write a book about the difficulties our team faced in introducing the brand – everything was tough! From finding a Ukrainian manufacturer that provided sufficiently-quality material to being forced to buy materials in bulk to having the brand’s trademark red ribbon in the collar bleach during the initial run. But now I’m proud of our extensive research, premium materials, and having a pilot as part of the design team. Most importantly for the business was how the brand’s popularity “skyrocketed” in 2014 and Aviatsiya Halychyny polos became highly acclaimed. This was the most important year of my life, but it didn’t come easy.

We want the Aviatsiya Halychyny brand to be synonymous with high-quality Ukrainian clothing, to become something like the Ukrainian Ralph Lauren. Ukraine, and Lviv in particular, has many active, modern, and creative people that generate great ideas and make highquality goods. And this kind of quality needs to be shown to the world!

Починаючи з 2014 року у нашій країні відбулося багато змін, з початком конфлікту на Сході України, змінилась і оновилась армія, і це важливе повідомлення ми доносимо назовні через патріотичний одяг. З часом ми додали до поло і футболок упаковку з гаслами на кшталт "Свобода завжди в моді". Проте, наша команда ніколи не втрачала з поля зору своєї головної мети: виробляти першокласний одяг в Україні. Ми хочемо, щоб бренд "Авіація Галичини" став синонімом якісного українського одягу, наче український “Ральф Лорен." Українські вироби повинні мати не гіршу якість. В Україні, і у Львові зокрема є дуже багато активних людей, які вже давно відірвались від минулого, мають цікаві ідеї і роблять щось якісне. Треба це показати світові! Окрім затишної крамнички у центрі Львова та онлайн-магазину, як ще просувається (реалізується) одяг під брендом “Aviatsiya Halychyny”? Коли ми тільки відкрились, то розпродали все за тиждень. Я була вражена таким попитом. Нам доводилося працювати 24 години на добу, щоб все пошити. Після відкриття двомовного(укр/англ) веб-сайту для онлайнпродажів, популярність бренду ще зросла. Я також особливо пишаюся реакцією українських пілотів і військовослужбовців, які часто купують поло та футболку собі і у подарунок для колег. Зараз компанія планує відкрити магазини у різних містах України, в кінці цього місяця – у центрі Дніпропетровська, а також у торговому центрі Ocean Plaza у Києві. Як Ви уявляєте майбутній розвиток бренду “Aviatsiya Halychyny”? Що ще цікавого готуєте на цей рік? У нас не бракує ідей на майбутнє. Небо не для всіх, декому більш до вподоби земля або море. В цьому плані команда розробляє кілька ідей, які можуть бути втілені вже найближчим часом, серед яких, зокрема, колекція на тему Леополіс Гран-Прі, а також морська тематика з образами Одеси та Миколаєва. Звісно, в планах є й пошиття поло на довгий рукав, штани, худі, куртки – все що пов’язане з авіаційною тематикою та схоже на одяг справжніх пілотів, які надихають і роблять літунську професію популярною. Також команда готує цілу лінію аксесуарів: ремені, кепки, сумки та багато іншого з ідентикою української авіації. Авіація – це дуже широка тема, адже є багато людей, які показали Галичину світу саме як авіатори. Тим більше, ми живемо у Львові і маємо багато про що розповісти, отже небо не межа для нашої команди. CHESS CRAZE CHECKS INTO LVIV Lviv was host to the Women’s World Chess Championship between Lviv’s-own Mariya Muzychuk and Hou Yifan of China (former two-time World Champion) from March 1-18 at the city’s spectacular Potocki Palace. Muzychuk won the title last September by besting 63 of the world’s top women’s chess players at the World Championships in Sochi, Russia. Since former champion Yifan was unable to attend the tournament due to scheduling conflicts, this special World Championship duel was arranged in Lviv. The prize package for the 10-match series was 200,000 Euros, with the winner receiving 120,000.

This incredible event attracted the great interest of Leopolitans and guests of the city. Before each match of the series the first move for the players was selected by specially-invited Ukrainian personalities, including: Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi; Okean Elzy frontman Svyatoslav Vakarchuk and his father Ivan Vakarchuk, the former Ukrainian Minister of Education and Science and current professor at Lviv University; Karpaty FC players Volodymyr Kostevych and Ihor Khudobyak; President of the National Paralympic Committee Valeriy Sushkevych and others.

The organising committee worked with representatives from Lviv City Council to offer Leopolitans activities to attract both children and adults to the game of chess. This included the installation of a giant chess board and pieces in front of City Hall on March 4th to mark the opening of the series, where a dozen local chess-playing children gave workshops to promote the “King’s Game”. Other activities included chess films at the Lviv Cinema Centre, chessinspired flash mobs, chess-related menus at restaurants, and an enormous “Chocolate Chess Queen” sculpture designed by famous confectioner Valentin Shtefanyo, which was donated as a prize to ‘sweeten’ the pot for the winner.

У березні Львів став господарем шахового чемпіонату світу серед жінок між львів’янкою Марією Музичук і Хоу Іфань з Китаю (колишньою дворазовою чемпіонкою світу). Марія Музичук здобула чемпіонський титул у вересні минулого року, обійшовши 63 з найкращих шахісток світу на турнірі в Сочі. Оскільки попередня чемпіонка китаянка Хоу Іфань не змогла взяти участь в турнірі через конфлікт графіків, цей спеціальний поєдинок двох "королев" був організований у Львові. Усі 10 партій були зіграні у палаці Потоцьких, а призовий фонд турніру склав 200 000 євро, з них переможиця отримала 120 000. Ця надзвичайна шахова подія викликала великий інтерес львів’ян та гостей міста. У кожній партії перший хід за гравців виконували спеціально запрошені гості, в тому числі: мер Львова Андрій Садовий; фронтмен гурту "Океан Ельзи" Святослав Вакарчук і його батько Іван Вакарчук, колишній міністр освіти й науки України, професор Львівського університету; гравці ФК "Карпати" Володимир Костевич та Ігор Худоб'як; президент Національного паралімпійського комітету Валерій Сушкевич. Оргкомітет спільно з представниками Львівської міської ради, проводячи цей міжнародний турнір, мали на меті залучити дітей і дорослих до гри в шахи. Для цього 4 березня з нагоди відкриття турніру, зокрема, була встановлена гігантська шахова дошка з фігурами перед будівлею Ратуші, де юні шахісти давали майстер-класи цієї "гри королів". Серед інших заходів були фільми на шахову тематику у Львівському кіноцентрі, тематичні шахові флеш-моби, шахові меню у ресторанах, а також величезна шоколадна фігура шахової королеви, створена шоколат'є Валентином Штефаньо, яка стала додатковим призом для переможиці.

CHEERFUL CHINESE SPRING CONCERT Last month Leopolitans and guests of the city were delighted by a special ‘Jolly Holiday of Spring’ concert featuring artists and musicians from China. The event was organised by the Embassy of China in Ukraine and the Lanhua Cultural Research Centre of China and Ukraine to mark the Chinese New Year, which began on February 8th. Distinguished Chinese conductors and illustrious musicians appearing in beautiful traditional costuming performed both Chinese folk music as well as contemporary arrangements. The event also featured a colourful show by students of the Tagou Shaolin Martial Arts School of Dengfeng as well as a virtuoso performance on the Erhu – the two-stringed Chinese fiddle – and the Guzheng – the Chinese zither. The Jolly Holiday of Spring concert was designed to enrich the cultural exchange between East and West and to bring China’s rich, 3000-year-old history to Ukraine.

КИТАЙСЬКИЙ ВЕСНЯНИЙ КОНЦЕРТ Минулого місяця на сцені оперного театру відбувся унікальний концерт за участю артистів та музикантів з Китаю. Захід організували посольство Китаю в Україні та Культурно-дослідницький центр України та Китаю "Ланьхва" з нагоди китайського Нового року, який розпочався 8 лютого. Відомі китайські диригенти і прославлені музиканти в яскравих традиційних костюмах виконували китайську народну музику, а також сучасні аранжування. Глядачі також побачили й оцінили барвисте шоу учнів школи бойових мистецтв Шаолінь з міста Денфен, а також віртуозне виконання на ерху – двострунній китайській скрипці – і гучжен – китайському різновиді цитри. Веселий концерт, присвячений Святу Весни, покликаний послужити збагаченню культурного обміну між Сходом і Заходом та знайомству з багатою 3000-річною історією Китаю в Україні.

SWEET LVIV! Lviv’s Art Palace was home to one delicious festival last month as the X Chocolate Festival treated Leopolitans and guests of the city to a variety of chocolate sweets, chocolatier workshops, and some of the best chocolate-filled days of their lives! One of festival highlights was Valentin Shtefanyo’s huge “Chocolate Chess Queen” sculpture designed especially for the Women’s World Chess Championship that was being held in the city. However, the biggest sculpture was the Black Knight chess figure, which was made from over 1 tonne of finest chocolate! In total, the festival drew more than 20,000 chocolate lovers to taste original drinks and desserts, try the Festival cake, and buy chocolatethemed souvenirs. It is no secret that children are the greatest chocolate enthusiasts, so the Lviv Chocolate Festival built an entire city with chocolate buildings, railways, and trees – just for them.

A real paradise for children as every little visitor could also take part in the making of their favourite sweet treats. The event also featured workshops from professional chocolatiers, an interactive ‘Museum of Chocolate’, and Chocolate Kingdom with the playground, confectionary and jolly children’s theatre.

СОЛОДКИЙ ЛЬВІВ У львівському палаці мистецтв на початку березня показували своє мистецтво найкращі шоколатьє й кондитери України, які створювали цукерки з начинкою, шоколадні фігури та солодкі композиції. Серед найцікавіших шоколадних фігур, мабуть, варто відмітити величезну шахову королеву, яку створив спеціально для чемпіонату світу з шахів серед жінок, що проходив в місті, відомий кондитер Валентин Штефаньо. Проте, найбільшою стала шахова фігура чорного коня, на виготовлення якої пішло понад тонну найкращого шоколаду. В цілому, гостями свята стали понад 20000 любителів шоколаду, які не відмовились скуштувати оригінальні напої та десерти, святковий торт і придбати різноманітні шоколадні сувеніри. Ні для кого не секрет, що найбільше шоколад люблять діти, тому на цьому святі було збудоване ціле місто з шоколадними будинками, залізничною колією, деревами й птахами – тільки для них. Особливістю було те, що кожен маленький відвідувач міг також взяти участь у створенні своїх улюблених солодких казок. Серед різноманітних заходів були ще й майстер-класи від професійних шоколатьє, інтерактивний «Музей шоколаду» і шоколадне королівство з дитячим майданчиком та дитячим театром.

RED BULL JUMP & FREEZE Sometimes skiers and snowboarders can take themselves just a little too seriously. But not at Bukovel on March 5th, when Red Bull’s Jump & Freeze – the craziest pool party of the season – stopped by.

This wild event draws some of Ukraine’s most daring daredevils who don wacky costumes and slide 150m down the slope to try to nail the best trick they’ve got before landing in the icy water! Each extreme 3-member team was judged on their fashion, artistry, and tricks by a “professional” jury comprised of radio DJ Andriy Chyzh, Mamahohotala comedian Rafik Rafikovych, and fellow extreme athlete – BMXer Vasyl Lukyanenko. The jury, of course, took their cues from the cheers of the crowd. Lviv’s-own ‘Fool Team’ topped ‘Hellboys 2’, Did, Baba & Targan’, and 16 other teams to walk away with this year’s bragging rights.

RED BULL JUMP & FREEZE Всі знають, що лижники і сноубордисти – люди дуже серйозні. Але раз на рік вони збираються в Буковелі і щосили намагаються позбутись цього стереотипу. Цього року ця весела подія відбулась 5 березня біля невеликого трампліна і басейну з крижаною водою. На ці веселі змагання збираються найсміливіші відчайдухи України, які надягають на себе неймовірні костюми і – гайда вниз по схилу, щоб продемонструвати ще й карколомний трюк перед тим, як гепнутись у крижану воду! Кожну команду з трьох чоловік оцінювало за їх стиль, артистизм і трюки "професійне" журі, до якого входили радіоведучий Андрій Чиж, комік Рафік Рафікович і представник братнього екстремального спорту BMX – Василь Лук’яненко. Переможцями стала львівська команда FOOL TEAM, на другому місці – Hellboys 2, третіми стали "Дід, баба та тарган", а учасники 16 інших команд зможуть похвалитись своїми "подвигами" перед друзями за чаркою чаю.

Lviv’s recently-opened Lviv National Art Academy Gallery (38 Kybiyovycha St.) played host to the spectacular and rather extraordinary exhibition ‘Reduction’ throughout March. From the beginning, this gallery was established to showcase creative experiments, original technology, and conceptual visions of the young generation of Ukrainian artists. The Reduction exhibition featured some of the country’s finest examples of their original creative sculptures, artistic ceramics, and other art objects. One of the main education goals of the Lviv National Art Academy is the continuous development and active creative research of art. The exhibition was another example of how to bring together those talented, young artists to showcase their unique personalities and ideas with art-loving Leopolitans and guests of the city. The gallery also serves as a stage for the students’ major project works and for graduates’ defences of their diploma works. With so many departments and faculties – including Textile, Ceramics, Glass, Woodware, and Metalware – the gallery will have no shortage of highquality and innovative art to display over the forthcoming months and years.

В приміщенні недавно відкритої галереї Львівської Національної академії мистецтв (вул. Кубійовича, 38) протягом березня відбулась незвичайна і вельми вражаюча виставка – “Reduction”. Ця галерея була створена, щоб стати платформою, на якій будуть представлені творчі експерименти, оригінальні технологічні, концептуальні бачення та роботи молодого покоління митців України. На виставці були представлені найкращі зразки творчих скульптур, художньої кераміки і оригінальні авторські твори. Одним з основних завдань навчального процесу у Львівській Національній академії мистецтв є постійний розвиток, активна творча науково-дослідна робота.Виставка "Reduction" була ще однією спробою зібрати разом талановитих випускників, з яких кожен став унікальною особистістю і кожен має багато ідей, щоб показати й поділитися із львів’янами та гостями міста, що цікавляться мистецтвом. Галерея, крім усього, надає свої приміщення для представлення проектних робіт студентів, а також для захисту дипломів випускниками. Академія має багато кафедр і факультетів, що охоплюють різні напрямки - текстиль, кераміку, скло, різьбу по дереву, ковальство тощо і тому ця галерея буде мати багато чого показати у найближчі місяці і навіть роки.

It was followed by a fashion show of Forum Lviv brands new collections together with a fashion show by Oksana Karavanska. Basketball: Politekhnika-Halychyna Finish 3rd Lviv’s Politekhnika-Halychyna basketball club saw its up and down season come to a crashing halt in the semi-finals against #2-ranked Kyiv Budivelnyk last month. The boys in green and white rocketed up the standings starting the season with a glittering 8-1 record, including a victory over their foes from Kyiv. The team’s fortunes then bottomed out as they lost their final 5 regular season games, punctuated by an embarrassing lost to last-place BC Odessa – their only win of the season. The losing skid continued into the playoffs, with the locals losing their first game to 6th-ranked Kharkiv (6-8) before salvaging the season with back-to-back wins. The team dropped both semi-final encounters with Budivelnyk, scoring a season-low 53 points in the first encounter and allowing a season-high 102 points in the rubber match. Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk won the 2016 SuperLeague championship with a 76:75 victory over Budivelnyk to take the final in two games, with Lviv finishing in 3rd position.

After falling at the Group Stage in the Champions League this season, the silver lining for Shakhtar fans was the automatic qualification for the knockout stage of Europe’s 2nd-tier Europa League tournament. The Miners drew a tricky opponent in the Round of 32 in Germany’s Schalke – the top-rated team to advance from the group stage.

Donetsk salvaged a home 0:0 draw in Lviv against the German side despite finishing the match a man down, before putting in a masterful 3:0 away performance behind goals by Marlos, Facundo Ferreyra, and Viktor Kovalenko to qualify for the Round of 16.Shakhtar had far more fortune in the Round of 16, drawing Belgian minnow Anderlecht, who had shocked Greece’s Olympiacos with two extra time goals to advance. The Ukrainian heavyweights were dealing with the defection of the team’s leading striker Alex Teixeira to Chinese club Jiangsu. The 26-yearold Brazilian scored 89 times for the Miners and netted the squad a record €50 million Euros. The loss hasn’t seemed to phase Shakhtar though, as the team has netted 13 goals in 5 games since – including three in a cool 3:1 Round of 16 win over Anderlecht in front of nearly 25,000 fans at Arena Lviv. Leopolitan fans could be in for a long ride as the transplanted Eastern Ukrainian team looks on form to equal their success from 2009, when the squad emerged as UEFA Cup Champions on Jadson’s memorable extra time goal in Istanbul.

Handball: Halychanka in the “Fantastic Four” Lviv’s Halychanka ladies handball team is set to compete with the “fantastic four” alongside Uzhgorod’s Karpaty, Kyiv’s Spartak, and Kherson’s Dnipryanka, in upcoming Ukrainian Super League action. The leaping ladies managed to upend the Dnipryanka twice in February with scores of 32:21 and 31:22. Currently the team sits second in the Super League, just four points back of Karpaty.

The ladies return to action in late March in Kyiv, before heading off to Kherson and Uzhgorod.

Cycling: Ukraine’s Winter Cycling Championship Lviv’s SKA bike track was host to some of the nation’s best cyclists from February 19-23 as the Ukrainian Winter Cycling Championships rolled into the city. Over 250 cyclists from around the country competed in a number of age categories and events in both individual and team competitions. One of the strongest events, and the Championship’s most exciting event, was the team pursuit, which saw Vinnitsya’s Vladislav Kreminskyi hold off Lviv’s-own Roman Hladysh and two cyclists from Ternopil (Taras Shevchuk and Vitaliy Hryniv) for the title.

10TH WAVE OF THE WESTERN UKRAINE LABOUR MARKET INDEX The EBA Western Ukrainian Office together with Lviv Consulting Group keeps monitoring the labor market of the Western Ukraine and is happy to share with you the latest results of the 10th Wave of the Western Ukraine Labour Index.

Compared to July 2015, Labour market Index in February 2016 went up by 0,09 and is at the level of 2,87. Thus, the labour market is still unstable for employers. Though the survey participants believe market salaries and employee related costs became more attractive for businesses due to hryvna devaluation and decrease of the single social tax rate.

The survey’s objective іs to identify major trends and dynamics of the labour market and to compare them with the previous wave indices.

The decrease of the single social tax rate down to 22% is an opportunity for businesses to save money. Around 47% of respondents will use this reserve to increase base salaries; 11% of respondents will allocate the money to pay bonuses; and 11% of production companies will finance additional employee benefits. 55% of respondents will not use the funds to increase pay.

During the past two waves none of businesses that participated in the survey reported pay decrease. Since January 2016 one third of survey participants have already reviewed pay with a 15% to 35% increase: production companies increased base wages, and providers of services increased a variable pay (bonus). 25% of respondents will consider 10-15% pay increase over a year. In total 44% participants plan to increase pay during the next three months, one third – by 10-15% (mostly production companies), two thirds - by 20-35% (providers of services). 30% of all respondents (IT, agriculture, logistics, sales, consulting and HR) will not review pay levels in the coming three months.

TAX & ACCOUNTING COMMITTEE Before the deadline for filing in of Declaration on income tax for 2015, the members of the Tax and Accounting Committee hold the productive working meeting. During the meeting, accountants and auditors discussed different key points of filling in the Declaration and shared their personal experiences on solving some problematic issues concerning it.

DELOITTE TAX AND LEGAL WORKSHOP Continuing the discussion of the Ukrainian Tax Code amendments, on 18 February in the framework of the Tax & Accounting Committee Deloitte Company conducted the tax and legal workshop on new challenges and solutions for managers and chief accountants. Together with Deloitte specialists the participants found out more about prospects for the introduction of electronic document flow, the current practice of the transformation of accounts payable and receivable on loans appeared to the founders (or Group companies) into the capital, key aspects of transfer pricing.

CUSTOMS COMMITTEE Considering the entry into force of EU-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement from 1 January 2016, on 9 February Customs Committee meeting with Lviv Customs SFS management was held. MARKETING COMMITTEE On February 5, 2016 we discussed Facebook as one the most modern accessible and cheap tools to promote the product. Kateryna Uspenska, the invited expert, independent internet – marketer, told the participants how to create and use Facebook profiles, pages and groups. We also found out more about paid advertising in Facebook and social media trends in 2016. Kateryna said that the good promotion on Facebook page cannot be free of charge, but money spent on promotion is minor compared to those invested in usual advertising. She also advised us to use 40% -40% -20% rule on creating useful and interesting content at the official Facebook pages of our company’s or product’s pages: product information (40%), informative posts related to business areas in which company operates (40%), entertaining posts (20%)

HR COMMITTEE At the end of 2015 in the first reading the draft Labour Code of Ukraine was approved with a fairly significant amount of innovation for both workers and employers. Thus on February 11 the joint meeting of the Human Resources and Legal Committees was conducted. During the meeting Natalia Anokhina, Legal Committee Head made a brief overview of legal issues of the proposed changes. In addition, HRs from members companies shared their opinions on how new Labor Code could affect directly on their activities.

Dear all, please advise whether it is possible to pay the dividends to non-residents abroad in euro since the Resolution of National Bank of Ukraine No. 863 dated of 04.12.2015 imposing respective limitation is not effective anymore or if there are new restrictions applied?

The restrictions provided by the Resolution of National Bank of Ukraine (hereinafter - NBU) No. 863 dated of 04.12.2015 were effective till 04.03.2016. Named Resolution established, among other, following limitations affecting foreign investors: • Obligatory sale of foreign currency in amount 75%; • No pre-term repayment (return) of the loans from non-residents; • Payment of dividends abroad.

At the same time, on 3rd of March 2016 the NBU issued new Resolution No. 140 “On Regulating the Situation in the Monetary and Currency Markets of Ukraine” which became effective from 5th of March 2016 and will remain in legal force till 8th of June 2016 inclusive. Unfortunately new Resolution does not only extend limitations mentioned above but moreover – imposes even stricter regulations.

In particular, the restrictions on sale of 75% of incomes in foreign currency are extended as it was estimated by the majority of all expects. The requirement of return of foreign currency or supply under the foreign contract within 90-day term is also extended to another 3-months period. Resolution of NBU has also established following limits for the purchase of foreign currency by individuals and withdrawal of cash from bank accounts: • the equivalent of UAH 50.000 in foreign currency and UAH 500.000 per day – for cash withdrawal from bank accounts; • the equivalent of UAH 6,000 per day – for purchase of foreign currency by individuals.

Answering on your question – it is still not allowed to purchase and further transfer foreign currency (in particular EUR) for payment of the dividends abroad to foreign shareholders. In respect to corporate relationships the restrictions are also extended on: (i) payment to the non-residents by residents the price of the shares sold in Ukrainian companies; (ii) payment to the non-residents as a result of decrease of a Ukrainian company’s charter capital or withdrawal of non-residents from the shareholders.

At the same time there are certain legal solutions in respect to repayment of the dividends and/or return of investment, which in each case shall be a subject to a separate analysis and individual legal advice.

DUTCH UKRAINE REFERENDUM COULD KILL DREAM OF PAX EUROPA Anti-EU forces seek to strike a blow against Brussels but the ultimate beneficiary of a 'no' vote would be Vladimir Putin The upcoming April referendum in the Netherlands over the EUUkraine Association Agreement is about much more than free trade ties between Brussels and Kyiv. Ukraine is guilty of nothing more than particularly bad geopolitical timing. The country finds itself an innocent bystander caught up in what is a far larger battle for the soul of Europe that sees advocates of greater continental union pitted against national forces intent on stopping what they regard as the undemocratic Brussels bulldozer.

The future of Europe is in the balance, and Ukraine's own integration ambitions are in danger of being relegated to the status of mere footnote.

ANTI-EU SENTIMENT BECOMING THE NORM The Dutch groups who initiated the referendum have millions of like-minded allies in every single EU member state. The influence of these anti-EU forces has increased enormously over the past decade of economic stagnation and mounting immigration angst. For the time being, they remain political outsiders, but the sense that the dam is close to bursting continues to grow. A breach in the Netherlands could easily lead to a systematic crisis throughout the EU. Empires have come crashing down over less.

Such doomsday predictions will be music to the ears of all those who view the European Union unfavourably, but it is worth considering what is potentially at stake when Dutch voters go to the polls. Opponents of the EU seem to think we can simply turn back the clock to the days of preBrussels national sovereignty while keeping all the economic and security dividends that the EU has secured for the continent. In this idealized tomorrow, the liberated nations of Europe would maintain free trade ties and continue living in peace and harmony while pursuing their own national interests.

You do not need to be a celebrated historian or international economist to find such expectations unrealistic. While it is unlikely that former EU member states would rapidly begin declaring war on each other, it does not take a great leap of the imagination to picture a future Europe of sealed borders, trade wars, arms races, and rival blocs. In other words, the kind of Europe that existed for hundreds of years prior to the advent of the EU.

DIVIDED EUROPE NO MATCH FOR RUSSIAN HYBRID WAR Nor do we necessarily need to speculate about potential future developments. It is enough to consider where Europe would be today if Russia had launched its hybrid war against Ukraine without having to contend with the EU. Unrestrained by the threat of a united EU response, the Kremlin would have been far more likely to attempt a full-scale occupation of Ukraine and to menace the immediate neighbourhood. Across the continent, divide and rule would have been the order of the day, with individual European countries wide open to the carrot and stick of Russian energy enticements and military blackmail.

Unopposed by a disunited Europe, Russian aggression would have succeeded in setting the political agenda for at least half the continent. The hopelessly exposed states of Central and Eastern Europe would have lined up to seek their own accommodations with the Kremlin, albeit in many cases through gritted teeth. The aftershocks of Russian military aggression would have reached all the way to the Atlantic and the shores of the North Sea, leading to the rising militarization of society, curtailed civil liberties, and the politics of fear.

We would now be witnessing the eclipse of the entire democratic value system that post-Cold War Europeans currently take for granted.

EU ACHIEVEMENTS OUTWEIGH IMPERFECTIONS The complaints levelled at the European Union are valid. Certain aspects of the EU are undeniably undemocratic, while economic diversity within the union encourages abuses that weigh disproportionately on the wealthier members. These concerns will be enough to persuade many Dutch voters to support the ‘no’ camp in the coming referendum, but they obscure the historic benefits the EU has brought.

The dream of a united Europe was born amid the ashes of WWII as a way of preventing the continent from ever descending into war again. Against all the odds, it has succeeded. Today’s Europe enjoys unprecedented peace and prosperity, and the European Union must take much of the credit for this historic success.

The EU is certainly a flawed institution, but the alternatives are infinitely less appealing. Anti-EU protest voters should be careful what they wish for.
