Why Sidewalks Matter:

What You Can Do For Your Community Well, another one bites the dust. Recently former Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced his resignation, due to his lack of popularity that in no small part derives from his perceived inability to crack down on corruption. Political turmoil hasn’t escaped us more locally either, as Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi has had his feet held to the fire for his poor handling of violence at a LGBT conference staged in the city last month. Yes, while Ukrainians have never been known to trust their political leaders, it seems that support for elected officials has reached an alltime low. Two years after the EuroMaidan protests were supposed to usher in a new era of transparency and honest government, two-thirds of Ukrainians still view corruption as a serious problem and more than 1 in 5 say they’ve personally witnessed a bribe in the last two years. So what is an average Ukrainian to do about it all?

There are several problems when it comes to driving in Ukraine – everything from having (or being able) to pay bribes to get out of a ticket to purchasing a licence without ever taking (or passing!) a driver’s exam – there really is no shortage of things to complain about. Yet maybe the most infuriating problem is the complete lack of courtesy that drivers show toward each other. Those that have spent any time on the road I’m sure can recall a time (every time?) when a line of cars decides to speed up when they see the light change to red. These scoundrels end up getting caught in the intersection, blocking traffic from every direction getting anywhere, and holding up all of their fellow drivers. It’s a selfish move to be sure, and perhaps indicative of a larger problem in the country.

The Differing Sets of Rules in Ukraine

What Does Your Sidewalk Look Like?

As anyone who has spent any amount of time in Ukraine knows, there are two different kinds of rules – rules that you can break, and those you can’t. I recall the story of patronising a certain swimming establishment and had a good chuckle over seeing the phrase “severely forbidden” on the list of rules. After explaining to my Ukrainian friends that forbidden is word that just can’t be quantified, they thought about it and – over a half hour later – explained to me that in Ukraine, things CAN actually be “severely forbidden”. In their words, “In Ukraine, some things are against the rules, while others are REALLY against the rules”. Take, for example, smoking on a train. By law it is illegal; but does that stop anybody? Bribes are also against the law; but they aren’t just accepted – they are often expected. But what does this have to do with anything?

A friend of mine offered me a very interesting piece of advice: “You can tell a lot about a country based on its sidewalks”, he says, “You see, a sidewalk is a community issue. The federal government won’t fix your sidewalk. It’s up to committed citizens to see that it’s done.” Unfortunately, in Ukraine, that’s not always the case. While individual apartments may be beautifully renovated and modern, stairwells, building exteriors, and yes, even sidewalks, often leave much to be desired. Sure it’s easy to lambaste Ukrainian politicians for their failures, shortcomings, or even criminal actions. But if we want to make a difference, maybe it’s better to look inwards, at ourselves. Am I one that races through a yellow light only to find myself blocking traffic? Have I paid a small bribe to anyone recently? Is my sidewalk outside in good condition? We can’t let the politicians get off the hook. But we also need to be holding ourselves to account in the same manner.

Lviv is all set to celebrate its 760th birthday this year and festive events will take place around the city from May 1st–9th. Lviv City Day is a holiday of great entertainment traditions and this year is no exception. Additionally, from May 1st-3rd, celebrations will showcase the jolly traditions and culture of the ancient city during the annual Batyar Day festival. Jokes, songs, and traditional rascal-style entertainment await everyone looking to be introduced to the original “Galician phenomenon” – the Batyar. With his audacious words and whole-hearted laughter, this is a young man that you will never mistake for another, nor will you ever be able to forget. FLUGERY LVOVA INTERNATIONAL JAZZ & FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL May 6th–9th in the inner yard of Lviv City Council (Rynok Square) The Flugery Lvova International Jazz and Folk Music Festival, which since 2003 has become a staple of Lviv’s cultural calendar and a Leopolitan trademark, returns from May 6th-9th. In over 10 years, more than 150 bands and performers have graced its stage and the festival has developed its own unique traditions and culture. In addition to the concerts and impromptu musical sessions, the festival stages theatre shows, multimedia presentations, and literary events. This year, Flugery Lvova 2016 will serve as a continuation of the ‘Lviv Month in Wroclaw’ cultural project and will offer Leopolitans and guests of the city fantastic cultural programming, including 20 musical acts from Ukraine, Poland, Israel, Iran, Italy, the USA, and even Azerbaijan. Festivalgoers

will not want to miss Rykarda Parasol Project, one of the event’s headlining acts that showcases American energy and Polish jazz traditions. Other popular performers include: Ukraine’s melodic AtmAsfera, who will present their new Mantra Diving program; Gych Orchestra, who will charm audiences with a dynamic set of their newest hits; and Lemkyvshyna’s Angela Gaber Project, which is a jazz interpretation of Serbian, Polish, and Ukrainian songs. The festival’s closing day on May 9th will be dedicated to Wroclaw, a European City of Culture in 2016, and will feature a joint project between Ukrainian writer, poet, and essayist Yury Andrukhovych and the Karbido band. Audiences will also want to catch the spectacular musical performance Leningrad by the Teatr Piosenki we Wroclawiu. Featuring songs by notorious Russian rocker Sergiy Shnurov, Polish artist Lukasz Czuj has managed to create a fabulous story about the Russian underground and its philosophy of constant hard drinking. MENUHIN-100 CONCERT April 18th, 19:00 at the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Lviv’s majestic Opera and Ballet Theatre is pleased to celebrate the 100th birthday of legendary violinist and humanitarian Yehudi Menuhin with a special concert on April 18th. FRENCH SPRING 2016 RETURNS

The rich and colourful events of the popular French Spring festival will return to Lviv on April. Once again, this spectacular festival is organised by the Embassy of France in Ukraine in cooperation with the Alliance Française French Cultural Centre. This year the festival will showcase several conferences, exhibitions, theatre performances, film screenings, and concerts. French Spring 2016 kicked off on April 1st with Claude and Marie-Jo Carret’s remarkable “The Gypsies, People of Europe” photo exhibition at Lviv’s Museum of Ethnography and Crafts and continued with a series of film screenings. One of the highlights of the festival is sure to be the charity performance of Oscar and the Lady in Pink. This play by Belgian dramatist, novelist, and fiction writer Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt will be brought to life by the Ivano-Frankivsk Academic Theatre at Lviv’s Mariya Zankovetska Drama Theatre and will include a creative meeting with the author himself on April 21st. With the festival running through until April 29th, you still have a chance to catch some of the upcoming

LONG NIGHTS OF SHORT METRE COMMENCE IN LVIV April 23rd, 23:00 at Planeto Kino in Forum Mall (7A Pid Dubom St.) Extremely popular since the first French Spring festival in Ukraine back in 2004, the annual Long Nights of Short Metre will be back in Lviv on April 23rd. The idea is steadily gaining momentum: 6-7 hours over a single night to enjoy a selection of some of the finest examples of short French cinema the world has to offer. Notably, each of the selections is fresh out of the cinematography oven. Most of the films that Leopolitan cinema-lovers and guests of the city will have the opportunity to view were first released to the public at prestigious French and international film festivals just last year. GORGANY HALF MARATHON April 24th, 10:00 in the square in front of the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Lviv’s 6th annual Gorgany Half Marathon is set to take place on Sunday, April 24th, with its starting line in front of the city’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre. The half marathon is a road running event that distinguishes itself from its Olympic cousin (full marathon) by being run at half the distance – 21 kilometres. Participation in the sport has seen a resurgence in the last few years as it has become known as a challenging distance that doesn’t require the same level of time and training commitment as the full race. In fact, Running USA has named it the single, fastest-growing type of running event. Lviv’s Gorgany Half Marathon was first held in 2010 and aims to popularise active sport and leisure activities among Leopolitans and guests of the city. Participants are divided into several categories based on age and gender and then run 21 kilometres through the heart of Central Lviv, through some of our most picturesque parks, and through the scenic Vynnyky forest. CHILDREN’S READING FESTIVAL May 12–15, Lviv Art Palace (17 Kopernika St.) Lviv’s Children’s Reading Festival is one of the few of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe, a one-stop-shop comprising of educational, entertainment, and cultural activities aimed to popularise the reading of and development of Children’s book publishing. On May 12th, Lviv’s hopping Picasso Nightclub is pleased to bring you an acoustic concert by former Lyapis Trubetskoy frontman and current lead singer of Brutto, Sergey Mikhalok. Born to a Soviet military family in East Germany, he travelled often with his parents and grew up in Siberia. When his family returned to Minsk, he became interested in the arts and graduated from the Belorussian State Academy of Arts. He created the iconic Belorussian rock group Lyapis Trubetskoy in 1990 which led him to superstardom. He has also worked with Liavon Volski’s Krambambul since 2003. Throughout his musical career, Mikhalok has publicly and repeatedly expressed his criticism of Belorussian authorities. By 2011, he and his band hit the so-called “Black List” of musicians who are banned from performing in the country. The band performed at EuroMaidan in 2014 in support of the revolution and their hit ‘Voiny Svetu’ became the unofficial anthem of the revolution. This led to him having problems in Russia, as he was accused of supporting nationalists. In spring 2014, he announced that Lyapis Trubetskoy would disband and the band played its emotional farewell concert, including the EuroMaidan anthem, on the 26th of August, 2014 at Kyiv’s Dynamo Stadium. In 2015, Mikhalok and his producer were granted permanent residence in Ukraine on humanitarian grounds. Tickets range in price from 150-350 UAH. Зелена, 88) У клубі "Пікассо" 12 травня відбудеться акустичний концерт колишнього фронтмена гурту "Ляпіс Трубецкой", а тепер провідного співака гурту "Брутто", Сергія Міхалка. Народився він у родині радянського військовослужбовця у Східній Німеччині, часто переїжджав зі своїми батьками і виріс в Сибіру. Коли його сім'я повернулася до Мінська, став цікавитися мистецтвом і закінчив Білоруську державну академію мистецтв. Він створив культовий білоруський рок-гурт "Ляпіс Трубецкой" у 1990 році, з яким став суперзіркою. Також працював з Лявоном Вольським у проекті "Крамамбулі" з 2003 року. Протягом усієї своєї музичної кар'єри Міхалок публічно і неодноразово висловлював свою критику білоруської влади. Вже в 2011 році він і його група потрапили в так званий "чорний список" музикантів, яким заборонили виступати в країні. Група виступала на Євромайдані у 2014 році на підтримку революції, і їх хіт «Воїни свету» став неофіційним гімном революції. Через це Міхалок мав проблеми в Росії, де його звинуватили у підтримці націоналістів. Навесні 2014 року він проголосив, що "Ляпіс Трубецкой" буде розпущений, і група зіграла свій емоційний прощальний концерт, в тому числі гімн Євромайдану 26го серпня 2014 року на стадіоні київського Динамо. Lviv’s New Art Hub A

n exclusive new art hotspot – FiligranaEtnica – opened up in Lviv’s central Opera Passage (27 Svobody Ave.) last month. This place is filled with some of the most interesting modern ethnic styleclothing from Ukrainian designers, as well as Andrey Kurilo’s one-of-a-kind hot-glass art pieces and Yuriy Nikitin’s masterful icons. Although glass has been popular for some 4,000 years, it still charms people today – especially when you see Kurilo’s original works and techniques. The glassmaker has taken the technology of pottery-making and made it his own for glass modelling. He draws sizzling hot threads out from glass mass and overlays one over another to weave an exquisite and exceptional artistic piece every time. His works are found in collections of presidents, while a replica of his Angel sculpture – whose original was presented to Pope Francis by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko – is available for purchase at FiligranaEtnica .

Nikitin is one of Ukraine’s leading icon-painters and is well-known for his originality. The artist continues to develop the icon-painting tradition from the Cossack days and employs the ancient Ukrainian folk icon technique of applying gesso and laying images on a board. The author complements the classical representation of saints with his own visions. An icon dedicated to the Heavenly Hundred (the protesters killed during the EuroMaidan protests), features an image of Ivan Sirko, the symbol of Ukrainian chivalry, who serves as a mediator between heroes of the past and today. The icon, which is available for purchase, features Sirko praying for the souls of departed heroes of the Heavenly Hundred in front of a crucified Jesus. odern fashion isn’t just about clothes, shoes, haircuts, or makeup. Design of the environment also has its own changing tendencies, styles, and trends that pop up from time to time. And it’s not so easy to successfully design an interior. It’s been 12 years already since ARS-IDEA Interior and Architectural Design Studio first opened their doors in Lviv, and they’ve handled over 150 projects since then. Their team of experienced professionals brings to life whatever project is given to them – regardless of complexity – according to the current trends and modern technologies in the fields of architecture and interior design. The firm’s cutting-edge creativity has been acknowledged with many different prizes and awards, the latest being the Grand Prix in the House Interior category at the Interium 2016 international contest for its Classic Cottage project. The market for interior design is growing; just 10 years ago the services were accessible to only a few people, but now more and more people are using a designer’s services to create cosy and stylish living spaces. Arsen Kostyshyn, the founder of ARS-IDEA, sat down with Lviv Today to tell us more about studio’s creative achievements and future plans, as well as the influence of interior design on our lives in general.

LVIV PROMOTION How did your professional career begin? How did ARS-IDEA come to life? It all started in 2004 when I clearly understood it was time to start my own business and to do something new and creative. It’s also when I started getting my first small design orders in Ukraine, which is really the birth of ARS-IDEA. I knew that “one cannot conquer alone”, so I developed a team. To avoid the triviality of naming the studio after my last name, I came up with ARS-IDEA – ARS is Latin for Art and Idea is for the sense of creating something new. After a few years of hard work, we developed our first exhibitions, started to participate in contests, and launched our webpage.

At first glance, interior design seems pretty simple. There are plenty of ads for shortterm courses to become an interior designer. Is it really that easy? One can’t simply become a designer; you must be born a designer! To better understand who is a designer, we should first clarify what is design itself. Design is everything – all the things that surround us. Each item has its own design: a soccer ball, a bicycle or car, your clothes, even your interior. An interior designer is the person responsible for the aesthetics of your life at home, your comfort, and your cosiness. A designer is a kind of a combination of a psychologist that analyses a person’s needs and lifestyle and a composer that carefully chooses the notes and creates very personal music. Of course, in addition to creating everyday comfort, a designer is also the mentor of taste. A well-established designer can forge tastes and influence mindsets on a subconscious level. People who find such a designer are fortunate indeed, as their level of significance in society is greatly enhanced!

What knowledge and skills are the most valuable for an interior designer?

Skills come with experience and include hard work, industrious studying, learning from mistakes, and most importantly – self-belief. I’m a big believer in continuous personal growth and discovering something innovative on each project, which is the reason why I often attend design exhibitions, forums, and workshops in Ukraine and abroad. The modern world changes very quickly and lack of progress will surely lead to lack of success.

Each creative person has a source of inspiration that leads to new energy and ideas. Who or what inspires you? As a person that gets restless easily and finds it difficult to sit in one place for a long time, my biggest inspiration comes from travel. I need, from time to time, to change the scene. That brings me great pleasure and a feeling of creativity and innovation. As someone that is very attentive to details, I note everything around me on my journeys, and in one way or another I interpret those details into my projects.

ARS-IDEA has developed a well-deserved reputation not only in Lviv, but throughout Ukraine. Will you share which projects you are most proud of? I am proud of all of our projects as we have invested a lot of work and emotion in each of them. Each project is special in its own way and no matter whether it is for a private residence or public establishment, each is still truly unique and exceptional. That being said, Leopolitans without doubt are well-acquainted with our work at establishments such as the Kumpel restaurant and brewery, Celentano Ristorante, and Ibis Styles hotel. Much of our work has been recognised within Ukraine and abroad, including the Grand Prix at the prestigious Interium 2016 contest. Our other project of private house was also noted and became 3rd place winner, while redesigned "Celentano ristorante” got to finals. LVIV TODAY | April 2016

What are the advantages of working with ARS-IDEA Interior & Architectural Design Studio? A unique aspect of working with ARS-IDEA is that you are working with a studio that understands “the soul”, which is to say that we not only implement our studio’s ideas, but we are able to incorporate the customer’s own ideas and wishes. This makes each interior a real masterpiece. We are a young and well-conditioned team with each member possessing their own original skills and talents.

What trends are popular in interior design in Ukraine and around the world? Ukraine is a very strong and talented country and Ukrainian designers hold their own at the global stage. Design, like people, changes all the time and need to be renewed from time to time according to world trends and individual tastes and moods.

Your interior should “live” with you which is to say that just like people, your walls enjoy new “clothing, accessories, and make-up” including furniture, art objects, and decors. In my opinion, future interiors will morph depending on the mood, season, event, or other factors.

What are your future plans? I have tonnes of paper sketches as ideas pop into my head each day. Presently our team is undergoing a period of confident maturity and there is no project which we could not bring to life. In the nearest future, we plan to surprise Leopolitans with a unique project at the city’s biggest restaurant. This project, which will be located in Lviv’s city centre, will allow guests to taste the dishes of five international cuisines. The one thing that never changes at ARS-IDEA is our commitment to hard work, continuous development, and aspirations to conquer new heights.

З чого почалася Ваша професійна діяльність? Як з’явився проект "ARS-IDEA"? Все почалось у 2004 році, коли я зрозумів, що настав час створювати щось своє, розпочинати самостійну творчу діяльність. Тоді і з’явились перші невеликі замовлення в Україні. З того часу, власне, і функціонує студія дизайну ARS-IDEA. Коли постало питання назви, я розумів, що без команди – "один в полі не воїн", і, щоб не називати студію банально своїм прізвищем, я придумав назву ARS-IDEA (ARS з латини – мистецтво, Idea – створювати щось нове). Після чого були перші участі у виставках, конкурсах, реєстрація власного вебсайту і роки клопіткої роботи.

При швидкому перегляді пропозицій, пов'язаних із спеціальністю дизайнера інтер'єрів, може скластися враження, що вчитися тут особливо немає чого: в газетах повно оголошень про короткотермінові курси з підготовки кваліфікованих спеціалістів. Чи насправді так легко стати дизайнером інтер'єрів? Дизайнером потрібно народитися, ним не можна стати. Напевно, щоб зрозуміти, хто такий дизайнер, потрібно для початку розібратися, що ж таке дизайн. Дизайн – це все, що нас оточує,

LVIV PROMOTION будь-який предмет має свій дизайн: футбольний м'яч, велосипед, авто, інтер'єр, одяг і т.д. Дизайнер інтер'єру – це людина, від якої залежить естетика середовища, у якому ви знаходитесь, ваш комфорт та зручність, це свого роду психолог, який, аналізуючи ваші потреби та стиль життя, підбирає відповідні ноти і складає з них ту музику, яка підходить саме вам. І, звісно, окрім створення побутової зручності, дизайнер є наставником вашого смаку. Правильно спроектований інтер'єр, у якому ви постійно перебуваєте, впливає на вашу підсвідомість, таким чином, формуючи ваші смаки і світогляд. Люди, які отримали такий інтер'єр є успішними, а рівень їхньої значимості у суспільстві постійно зростає.

Які знання і навички є найбільш цінними для дизайнера інтер'єрів? Знання приходять з досвідом, а для цього потрібно дуже багато працювати, вчитись на помилках і головне – вірити в свої сили. Я є прихильником постійного саморозвитку, пошуків чогось інноваційного для своїх проектів, тому я дуже часто відвідую дизайнерські виставки, форуми, майстер-класи як в Україні, так і за її межами. Адже сучасний світ дуже швидко змінюється, і відсутність будь-якого прогресу автоматично стає регресом.

У кожної творчої людини є так зване джерело творчості, звідки вона черпає нову енергію та ідеї. А хто чи що надихає вас? Для мене, як для людини, яка не може довго сидіти на одному місці, найбільшим джерелом натхнення є подорожі. Мені потрібно час-від часу змінювати "картинку" і тоді я почуваюсь комфортно, а отже можу творити щось нове і отримувати від цього задоволення. Я дуже уважний до деталей, тому під час подорожей я фіксую все, що мене оточує і в той чи інший спосіб інтерпретую це у свої проекти.

Студія дизайну "ARS-IDEA" відома не тільки у Львові, а й по всій Україні завдяки вдалим проектам у різних містах. Якими своїми проектами пишаєтеся найбільше? Чи проектували щось закордоном? Я люблю всі наші проекти, тому що у кожен з них вкладено дуже багато праці і емоцій. Кожен з проектів є особливим посвоєму, чи то приватне житло чи громадське місце, всі вони унікальні та неповторні. Проте, львів'янам однозначно відомі такі наші проекти як Ресторан-пивоварня "Кумпель", Celentano Ristorante у готелі Ibis Styles та ресторани Crazy Town. Багато наших робіт було відзначено як в Україні, так і за її межами, зокрема, нещодавно ми отримали гран-прі на Міжнародному конкурсі "Interium 2016" у Києві. Інший проект приватного будинку завоював третє місце. А проект "Celentano ristorante" нового формату також потрапив у фінал. Що LVIV TODAY | April 2016

стосується закордонних проектів, то зараз ми активно розпочали роботу з нашими партнерами з Великобританії.

Які тенденції спостерігаються сьогодні в дизайні інтер’єрів в Україні, а що модно у світі? новий "одяг", оновлену "зачіску" та аксесуари. Думаю, інтер'єри майбутнього будуть змінюватися та трансформуватися в залежності від настрою, пір року, подій, які там відбуватимуться та багатьох інших факторів.

Ваші плани на майбутнє? Ескізів, як на папері, так і в голові є безліч, нові ідеї з’являються щодня. На даний момент ми переживаємо етап впевненої зрілості нашої команди, і немає проектів, які ми не зможемо реалізувати.

Незабаром ми здивуємо Львів унікальним проектом найбільшого ресторану міста у якому можна буде скуштувати страви п'яти різних кухонь світу, і все це в самому серці Львова. Окрім цього, є ще багато планів та проектів, над якими ми зараз активно працюємо. LFW: FALL / WINTER 2016/17 Lviv welcomed back the wonderful outfits and beautiful ladies of Lviv Fashion Week on March 24-27, as fashion industry representatives, experts, consumers, designers, models, and media gathered to see what’s in store for Fall / Winter 2016/17. Designers from across Ukraine travelled to the city present their prêt-à-porter seasonal collections. Traditionally came designers from Belarus – young Anastasiya Rozova, finalist of the SABOTAGE Young Designers Contest, presented her debut collection, while other Belorussian designers – Natalia Ligorova, Kira Algina, and Anton Yaroshchyk – took part in the OFF Schedule shows. Leopolitan fashionistas and guests of the city were delighted with the presentation of the Georgian brand VASKA collections. Yet maybe the most wellreceived shows of the week were Roksolana Bogutska’s new collection, creative Marta Wachholz show, exquisite and refine Novana Studio outfits and Lesia Semi’s colourful colection. Львів’яни знову мали нагоду себе показати та на інших подивитись, під час Львівського Тижня Моди 24-27 березня, на якому зібрались представники індустрії моди, експерти, дизайнери, моделі, журналісти і блогери, щоб побачити нові модні тренди на осінь/зиму 2016/17. Дизайнери з усієї України з’їхались до Львова, щоб представити свої сезонні колекції прет-а-порте. Традиційно приїхали білоруси – молодий дизайнер Анастасія Розова, фіналіст конкурсу молодих дизайнерів "Саботаж", представила свою дебютну колекцію, а інші білоруські дизайнери – Наталя Лігорова, Кіра Альгіна і Антон Ярощик – взяли участь у показах OFF Schedule. Львівські модниці та гості міста були в захваті від презентації грузинської колекції марки VASKA. Проте, можливо, найкраще публіка зустрічала покази нових колекції Роксолани Богуцької, Marta Wachholz, витончену та жіночну Novana Studio та барвисту колекцію Lesia Semi. Приємне враження залишили по собі надзвичайно цікаві колекції польських дизайнерів Валерії Токажевської-Карашевіч і Клаудії Маркєвіч (спільно з Fashion Philosophy Fashion Week Poland).

F/W 2016/17 BY LESIA SEMI The young and talented Ukrainian designer Lesia Semi presented her new and exclusive fashion collection F/W 2016/17 at last month’s glamorous Lviv Fashion Week. The gifted designer said she was inspired by interpreting the medieval attire in historical movies, especially from The Last Kingdom series. Semi’s collection showcases a full range of clothing: blouses; tops; jumpsuits; various pants; straight-, flared-, and pleated-skirts; dresses; overcoats; and even capes. To create the collection, the young designer used exclusively natural fabrics, including: cotton, wool, jersey, organza, and fur. Her outfits are well-complimented with additional removable elements, such as: fur collars, cuffs, and belts. The F/W 2016/17 line provides a rough, or even slightly aggressive, impression compared to her previous collections. We’re looking forward to seeing what Lesia Semi has in store for us next, as her design ideas don’t stand still – she’s always thinking and creating something beautiful for us all!.

ЛЕСЯ СЕМІ: КОЛЕКЦІЯ F/W 2016/17 Українська молода й талановита дизайнер жіночого одягу Леся Семі представила на Lviv Fashion Week чималу колекцію одягу F/W 2016/17. Натхненням стала інтерпретація костюму епохи середньовіччя в сучасному історичному кіно, зокрема, у фільмі "Останнє королівство". У асортименті : блузи, топи, водолазки, штани різних форм (широкі, звужені, прямі, кюлоти), спідниці – прямі, овальної форми, асиметричні з поєднанням гофре і плісировок, сукні, пальто, кейпи. Леся Семі вдало попрацювала з різноманітними матеріалами – котоном, органзою, трикотажем, крепом, вовною та хутром. Доповненнями до одягу стали зйомні елементи: хутряні комірці з ремінцями, пояси, манжети. Загалом настрій нової колекції – більш суворий і агресивний, ніж у попередніх. З нетерпінням слідкуємо за брендом Леся Семі – адже бачимо, що дизайнер не стоїть на місці й сміливо творить прекрасне для нас!

MISS LVIV CASTING Over 125 of Lviv Region’s most beautiful and talented ladies gathered at Lviv’s Glory Café on March 24th to try to win a coveted finals spot at the Miss Lviv 2016 beauty pageant to be held later this year. The lovely ladies tried to woo the jury with a combination of their beauty, wit, and modelling talents. The jury featured some of Ukraine’s most notable figures in the world of pageantry and some of Lviv’s biggest movers and shakers, including: Miss Lviv 2015 Maryana Skorynovych, Miss Lviv 2009 Valerya Nikiforets, Miss Ukraine Casting Director Valentina Velidchenko, Atlas Hotel owner Udo Heine, and Lviv Today Editor Lee Reaney. Also in attendance was Miss Ukraine 2013, Lviv’s-own Andriana Khasanshin. Fourteen lucky ladies were selected to compete for the chance to represent the Lviv Region in the upcoming Miss Ukraine national pageant. Congratulations to all the contestants!

The Embassy of Canada was warmly welcomed in Lviv during its Imagine Studying in Canada Fair. The event attracted over 2000 visitors who were able to learn about education opportunities at 17 participating Canadian universities, colleges, and language schools. The Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine, Mr. Roman Waschuk, joined local officials to welcome the participants at the opening ceremony. Conferencegoers were also happy to get a ‘taste’ of Canadian cultural life, nature, and even maple syrup!

КОНФЕРЕНЦІЯ ПРО ОСВІТУ В КАНАДІ Посольство Канади організувало у Львові, як і у багатьох країнах світу, конференцію-ярмарок Imagine Studying in Canada Fair, яку тепло зустріли Львів’яни. ECO POSTERS EXHIBITION Lviv’s central Rynok Square played host last month to an open air exhibition of environmental posters by graphical designers from 24 different countries. The works were united by two of the world’s worst technological disasters at nuclear power stations: the 30th anniversary of Chornobyl and the 5th anniversary of Fukushima. Lviv was the first city to present this eco-exhibition before its sets off to other Ukrainian cities, including: Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kharkiv. There are plans for the exhibition to tour major European cities, while satellite exhibitions are planned to take place in Russia and Belarus.

ВИСТАВКА ЕКО-ПЛАКАТІВ Минулого місяця на пл. Ринок у Львові під відкритим небом відбулась виставка екологічних плакатів художників-графіків з 24 країн. Роботи були об'єднані темою двох з найбільших у світі техногенних катастроф на атомних електростанціях: 30-річчя Чорнобиля і 5-ї річниці Фукусіми. Львів став першим містом, де була представлена ця еко-виставка, далі вона поїде до інших міст України, серед яких, зокрема: Київ, Одеса, Дніпропетровськ і Харків. UKRAINIAN DEFENCE MINISTER MEETS CANADIAN COUNTERPART Ukrainian Army General and Defence Minister Stepan Poltorak welcomed the Canadian Minister of National Defence, Mr. Harjit Singh Sajjan, to the International Centre for Peacemaking and Safety at the Yavoriv military training facility in Lviv Region on March 15th. Mr. Poltorak informed his Canadian counterpart of the current situation in Eastern Ukraine and of the ongoing reforms in Ukrainian defence. They also discussed the implementation of existing programs of military cooperation between Ukraine and Canada. During their visit to Yavoriv, Canadian instructors demonstrated exercises on small arms handling and on delivering first aid in combat. After the exercises an official ceremony was held where the Ukrainian Defence Minister awarded medals to both Ukrainian and Canadian soldiers for their service to Ukraine. The soldiers were also recognised by the Canadian Minister of National Defence.

ЗУСТРІЧ МІНІСТРІВ ОБОРОНИ УКРАЇНИ Й КАНАДИ Міністр оборони України генерал армії Степан Полторак зустрів міністра національної оборони Канади Харджіта Сінгха Саджана в Міжнародному центрі миротворчості та безпеки на Яворівському полігоні у Львівській області 15-го березня. Міністр оборони С. Полторак поінформував свого канадського колегу про поточну ситуацію у Східній Україні і проведені реформи в українській обороні. Міністри також обговорили хід реалізації існуючих програм військового співробітництва між Україною і Канадою. Під час свого візиту в Яворові канадські інструктори продемонстрували вправи зі зброєю і методи надання першої медичної допомоги в бою. Після вправ була проведена офіційна церемонія, на якій міністр оборони України нагородив медалями українських і канадських солдатів за їх службу Україні. Солдати також були відзначені міністром національної оборони Канади.

GREETINGS TO LVIV INTERNATIONAL ROTARY CLUB Lviv’s Opera Passage Hall played host to the Charter Party of the newly-established Lviv International Rotary Club on April 1st. Lviv’s Rotary pedigree dates back to the 1930s, but was cut short by the outbreak of WWII. The Rotary Club’s charitable ethos returned to the city in 1990 during the dying days of the Soviet regime when a ‘temporary’ branch was founded. Today’s newly-launched Lviv International Rotary Club community already boasts over 25 members drawn from across the city’s business community. Several specially-invited guests were on hand for the festive ceremony to charter the Lviv International Rotary Club with a distinct Charter Certificate from Rotary International, including the Director of Rotary International Per Hoyen, DG Barbara Pawlisz, and PDG Myroslav Haryliv. While the Lviv International Rotary Club was founded only this year, it has already become the leading one

in Western Ukraine. Thanks to the good work and organisational ability of club’s President Lars Vestbjerg, the organisation has managed to establish strong local relations in both business and social activities. The Lviv International Rotary Club is created from strong businesspeople and intellectuals that occupy distinguished positions in society. Members are required to have a strong professional background and knowledge of the English language. The organisation supports a number of international and local projects, including ongoing initiatives helping seniors’ homes in Lviv and region, the early diagnosis of congenital heart defects in children in Lviv, and an initiative aimed at saving the lives of children in traffic. Новий ресторан на площі Ринок, 28, і, як зазвичай, купа запитань: чому Чесне, які ціни, як там взагалі і т.д? Враховуючи густоту закладів на Ринку стає очевидним, що там мусить бути щось, що виділяє його серед конкурентів. Зазирнувши на сторінку переглянули схвальні відгуки, подивились відео і вирушили досліджувати новинку самостійно. Перше враження дуже позитивне - вишуканий і водночас стриманий інтер'єр, привітний персонал, але заклад ще працює в тестовому режимі, про що свідчить стікер на вході. В меню серед страв знаходимо розділ “Мангалиця” і тепер уже мусимо втамувати професійний голод – нам потрібні відповіді! Хоча офіціант достатньо впевнено розповідає про заклад, ми просимо закликати когось з керівництва. За якусь мить наш діалог продовжується в компанії приємної жінки Богдани – керуючої ресторації.

Нам довелось кілька років працювати над тим, щоб виростити достатню популяцію, бо вона живе й розмножується виключно у природних умовах. Цю свиню не потрібно щеплювати, бо у неї сильна імунна система, харчується тільки рослинною їжею, а це в час штучних кормів дуже суттєва перевага. Власне тому її м'ясо дієтичне та легко засвоюється, бо не містить холестерину.

IN SEARCH OF HONEST MEAT… Honest Meat – the recently-opened restaurant on 28, Rynok Square already has plenty of questions: Why is it called “Honest Meat”?; What are the prices?; Is it worth visiting?. Considering the number of venues on Rynok Square, the new restaurant on the block needs to offer something special to differentiate itself from its competitors. After reading many enthusiastic reviews, we decided to explore the venue ourselves and the first impression was very positive. It has a beautiful yet moderate interior and friendly staff, which is a good start for a place that still features a sticker that reads “test mode” on the restaurant’s front door. The menu offers an entrée entitled Mangalitca, which made us even more curious. I like to recommend the Pansky (lordly) Mangalica Steak. And for next time, the Veal Fillet on the Hot Stone.

This is a very popular question lately! We had several options for the restaurant’s name, but finally made up our minds on Honest Meat as it perfectly conveys our restaurant’s concept. We decided to skip inventing mysterious legends or attractive stories as we wanted to be honest with our guests from the very beginning! It is Honest Meat because we use natural meat! Honest because it comes from our own farm, is always fresh, and is ecologically-friendly.

Well, there is always room for perfection and our current dishes servings differ plenty from previous ones. We constantly work to improve everything – from our recipes to our cooking – and guests are a great way to learn as they are always sympathetic.

Mangalitca is surely a unique breed of domestic pig. Where do you buy it?

Tell us more about the culinary contest you announced. What do you aim to do with it?

That’s the thing – we rear the pigs ourselves, which is truly a very special and unique pig for Ukraine. For several years we worked to breed enough pigs as they live and breed only in a natural environment. The pigs need no vaccination as they have a very strong immune system. They also eat only plants, which is a great advantage in times of artificial fodders. The meat is healthy and easily digestible, as it has no cholesterol.

Bodybuilding & Fitness: Lviv Region’s Open Cup Championship Lviv’s G. Hotkevych Palace of Culture played host to the Lviv Region’s Open Cup Bodybuilding Championship on April 2nd. The event’s main judge – Lviv’s Ihor Lukachuk – had the tough task of determining the best competitors from over 200 participants. Some of Ukraine’s fittest musclemen and women flocked to Lviv – including from as far away as Donetsk – to present their personal skills and stunning appearances. Winners were chosen in several categories, including: Bodybuilding Juniors, BodyFitness, and Fitness-Bikini. The winners received their prizes from none other than Oksana Brygidyr – the Ukrainian champion of the IFBB World Fitness Championship in 2015.

Dance: International competition “Silver Edelweiss-2016” Lviv’s Gratsya Sports Complex was host to the Silver Edelweiss 2016 national sports dance competition from April 9th-10th. Over 1000 children and adult dancers from every region of Ukraine competed in various age categories throughout the weekend. Dancers presented spectacular dance shows in both Standard and Latin programmes. The festivities were spiced up by the accompaniment of the professional LeoBand orchestra under the guidance of Mykola Orach, to the musical numbers.

Football: EURO 2017 qualifying match Ukraine VS Albania Lviv’s sparkling Arena Lviv hosted the EURO 2017 qualifying match between the national women’s teams of Ukraine and Albania on April 8th. The Ukrainian ladies defeated the Albanian side 2:0 to walk away with their 3rd victory in 5 qualifying matches. It was the second time the team defeated Albania, after winning 4:0 for their first qualifying victory on March 4th. The team can thank captain Daria Apanaschenko for the margin, as she opened the scoring in the 15th minute and increased the advantage with a 74th minute marker. Ukraine currently sits second in their division on 10 points from 5 games. France is first with 12 points in 4 games, while Romania (7p, 4g), Greece (6p, 5g), and Albania (0p, 6g) trail further behind. The winners of the 8 qualifying groups and the 6 best runners-up will join the host Dutch team in the EURO 2017 finals that will take place in July and August 2017. The other two second-place teams will meet each other in a playoff (October 17 & 25) for the last ticket to the Netherlands. The finals draw is set for September 23rd.

EBA COURT INDEX OF 1ST QUARTER 2016 The European Business Association presents the results of the 3d wave of the Court Index (December 2015 – February 2016). The EBA research initiated in 2013 identifies the confidence level of business representatives towards the current judicial system of Ukraine.

Other key numbers of the EBA Court Index: •50% of experts estimated access to commercial courts negatively •54% of court system experts believe that due to changes in the size of the fee, access to the administrative courts has become absolutely limited The direct or indirect factors, that have a negative impact on the level of confidence in the judicial branch of power: •91% – corruption in courts, •82% – inefficiency and duration of the execution of court decisions, •74% – high overload of the courts that leads to reduction in the quality of the solution, •71% – uncertainty of legislation, •46% – low level of legal awareness of society and absence of state actions in this area, •25% – privacy of the court process for citizens, •25% – uncertain procedures in court proceedings.

EBA Court Index consists of three equal ratings: 1.Rating of the confidence level of the judicial system by the heads of EBA member companies, the main consumers of legal support services for cases in judicial bodies; 2.The effectiveness rating (impartiality and objectivity) of the judicial system by the professional environment. This category of respondents includes lawyers from EBA member companies and lawyers from legal/consulting companies that provide professional services and legal support to clients in the courts; 3.The average rating of the 8 criteria of the organization of the Ukrainian judiciary that were highlighted as key ones and have significant impact on the confidence of the professional environment. It is worth mentioning that in 2015 the investors’ confidence in the judicial system has fallen considerably, even in comparison with 2013. Average of the level of trust to the court system in Ukraine for 4 quarters of 2015 is 1, 64 (1 – distrust completely, 3 – equally trust and distrust, 5 – fully trust). This is due to the situation in the country and the fact that the investor is waiting for qualitative and effective changes in the judicial system and protection of their rights.

EBA THURSDAY TALKS On March, 3 the members of the Association had a wonderful evening together in the framework EBA ThursdayTalks under the slogan "Lviv creative and innovative." at the Garmata Restaurant of The Citadel Inn hotel. Besides the members of the Association, Ilia Kenigstein, the owner of Creative Quarter and Vlad Voskresensky, the owner of Invisible CRM were the invited guests of the meeting. The participants agreed that innovation and

creativity are the leading trends in the 21st century and all that is created today must be created for the future of our children. Ilia Kenigstein shared information about his idea of modern hub in the old tram depot, told the story of building the depot in Lviv. In addition Vlad Voskresensky told more about bringing of 3G in Ukraine. Later on Yuriy Tamm, the Ambassador of Monaco in Estonia and Andriy Bilyy, Director of Elektromobil Marathon that will start this year in Lviv. The meeting continued in the direction of new electro car technologies and alternative fuels.

EBA WOMEN'S CLUB On March, 18 the members of the Women's Club met at the EBA office to talk about successful women and the price they pay for their success. Volodymyr Stanchyshyn, psychologist of the American Medical Center

in Lviv, mentioned five basic needs – love, safety, autonomy and recognition, expression of emotions, spontaneity and play. He also explained how and why meeting these needs in childhood and adulthood allows a person to

feel confident and successful or vice versa. Also there was a lively discussion about how important it is to be kind to yourself, allow yourself to relax, make mistakes and accept yourself as you are.

EBA COMMITTEES ACTIVITY IN MARCH The Community of EBA Western Ukrainian office Committees members continues to gather together in order to discuss critical and important issued of today’s business life.

HR COMMITTEE MEETING According to the results of the 10th wave of Western Ukrainian Labor market index employee education remains among the top priority for companies’ HR processes. So on March, 11 the HR Committee meeting initiated by ULIANA TERLETSKA, HR Committee Head was conducted. Practical tips for building of corporate training system were the main point for discussion. JULIAN VERSTA, the ideological founder and curator of the Lviv Chocolate Factory Training Centre shared his personal experience in this area. Participants discussed positive and

negative features of the different approaches to creating such educational system, shared different instruments of identifying the needs of personnel training, selection of training programs and trainers. Also, some HRs could turn to Julian Versta for individual advices on their companies’ cases.

MARKETING COMMITTEE On March, 15 at the Rockfellow AntyCinema active and creative members of the Marketing Committee met to review and discuss famous foreign and local video advertisings, including videos of the Association member companies. The idea of such creative event belong to KRYSTYNA SIRKO, Marketing committee Head. Each of the participants had an opportunity to express their vision of a successful video content based on revised. The majority agreed that video content should be clearly addressed to the appropriate target audience and has a clear message to the consumer. Also, one should pay attention to the duration of the video, using of humor, colors, music and inviting celebrities. According to the participants, the most popular videos are always dynamic, have some mystery and a call to action.

LEGAL COMMITTEE On March, 31, EBA Western Ukrainian office Legal Committee members together with the representatives from Lviv City Council met in order to discuss new City Centers of administrative services. Firstly, VALENTYNA BARTOSHYK, the Head of Lviv City Center of administrative services, presented the centers’ vision and then the participants discussed pros and cons of providing services by such centers. Also they stressed the need to increase the number of registrars and consider the possibility to learn from the experience of other countries in which exists the active e- system of registration. It was agreed to combine efforts with representatives of the Lviv City Council on the improvement of the Centers of administrative services work.

TAX & ACCOUNTING COMMITTEE On March, 31 Tax & Accounting Committee members together with invited experts OLENA VOZNYUK (Partner, Tax and Law Services) and TARAS POLYANSKYJ (Senior Tax and Law Consultant) from Nexia DK Company discussed different aspects of transfer pricing documentation preparation, problems that exists in defining controllability of business transactions and ways of avoiding them. Furthermore they cleared some problematic moments in defining the criteria of transactions comparability, the priority of comparable domestic transactions over external comparable transaction and in the order of filling in the controlled transaction report.

Q: Dear all, please advise what are the grounds for seizure of property in the framework of criminal investigation under the new rules Recent amendments to the Criminal procedure code of Ukraine amending the procedure of seizure of property were introduced in beginning of this year. In particular, on 28 February 2016 Law No.1019-VIII "On Amendments to the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine pursuant to the recommendations contained in the sixth report of the European Commission on the status of the implementation by Ukraine of the Action Plan for liberalization of the EU visa regime for Ukraine regarding the improvement of procedures for seizure of property and the institute of special confiscation came into force. The Law stipulates that seizure of property (arrest of the property) is a provisional remedy. So in other words it is a judicial decision which deprives a person of the right to alienate, dispose of and/or use the property regarding which there is a set of appropriate evidence sufficient to believe that it is a proof of crime or may be subject to confiscation or special confiscation (the rules of special confiscation were also amended by mentioned law). The mentioned changes consist in the legally enshrined requirements for the grounds for seizure of property. Thus, a mere whims or suspicions on the part of an investigator would not suffice to put a person’s property under a ban. Investigators will be obliged to properly and adequately argue in favour of their requests for seizure to the court and back up their arguments with evidence Another important change is the legal status granted to third parties, whose property is pending decision on seizure. Thus, the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine has been amended in Article 64-2, under which it is provided that a third party, whose property is pending decision on seizure, may be any individual or legal entity. The above status is granted to a person as soon as a prosecutor files a motion for seizure of property with the court. Therefore, legal entities and individuals, whose property is seized, are now able to assert their rights within the respective criminal proceedings to the fullest extent, in particular, to challenge the legality of the arrest; unlawful actions, decisions and omissions of investigator or prosecutors. It is also important that the mentioned persons are endowed with the rights and obligations provided for suspected and accused in terms of seizure of property. Accordingly, unlike before, the law grants them the right to an attorney and his/her participation in criminal proceedings.

FOREIGN POLITICIANS UNDERLINE UKRAINE'S CREDENTIALS

AS 'THE REAL RUS'

Mongol yoke, when Muscovy first rose to prominence by doing the bidding of the Khans. Indeed, Moscow did not appear on the map until the twilight years of the Kyiv Rus and played no role in the state’s heyday. Russia’s famously antagonistic and insecure attitude towards Europe is also at odds with the sophisticated continental diplomacy of the Kyiv Rus state, epitomized by Kyiv Prince Yaroslav the Wise’s marriage policies, which earned him the unofficial title ‘Father-in-Law of Europe’. Meanwhile, the ancient rulers of Kyiv Rus would have had little trouble understanding the desirability of Ukraine's current EU integration efforts.

Ukraine’s policy of appointing foreigners to senior government positions has been one of the boldest and most controversial steps taken by the country’s post-Euromaidan authorities. Critics have slammed the trend as an insult to the Ukrainian nation, claiming that it implies a complete lack of suitably qualified local candidates. Supporters have tended to counter this argument by pointing to the strong performance of most foreign appointees, and the absence of corruption allegations surrounding them.

AN EPIC INVITATION While the relative merits of recruiting foreign specialists into government remain the subject of heated debate, few observers have so far recognized the historical dimension behind the issue. After all, if we are to believe the ancient chronicles, the entire Kyiv Rus state arose thanks to similar experiments in governance. According to 12th century 'Tale of Bygone Years’, which is widely acknowledged as the primary source of information on the origins of East Slav civilization, the foundations of the Kyiv Rus state lay in an invitation to foreign tribal leaders to take over the running of what was a naturally wealthy but chaotic region. “Our land is great and rich, but there is no order in it,” recounts the chronicle. “Come to rule and reign over us.” This ninth century appeal to a group of Scandinavians would eventually result in the creation of the Kyiv Rus state, which in turn became one of the mightiest powers in early medieval Europe. There are clearly question marks over the credibility of this account, given the fact that it appeared centuries later and was written to order for Kyiv princes who traced their ancestry directly to the Scandinavian recipients of the alleged invitation. Nevertheless, it remains the founding myth of East Slav civilization and the cornerstone of the heritage which modern Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia all lay claim to.

The emergence of independent Ukraine over the past two and a half decades has sparked an ongoing battle with Russia over the Kyiv Rus legacy. Ukrainians accuse Russia of stealing their history, while Russians scoff contemptuously at Ukrainian pretentions. Like all historical controversies, this one has no definitive answer. Even so, Ukraine’s claim to be the heir to the ancient Rus state has very real contemporary political resonance because it provides the Ukrainian nation with a thousand-year inheritance that flatly contradicts Kremlin attempts to portray it as an ‘artificial nation’ with no history of its own. This is something opponents of Ukraine’s current crop of foreign-born ministers and state officials might want to bear in mind. Far from being a shameful departure from political norms or an indication of Ukraine’s inability to govern itself, the decision to recruit international experts is actually very much in line with the oldest traditions of Ukrainian statecraft.
