“moments to remember” Top 5 Culture Moments #5 – Pinsel at the Louvre: Ivan Pinsel, better known as Johann Georg Pinsel, was a dynamic late Baroque sculptor in Galicia. He was responsible for many of the spectacular 18th-Century works, including Lviv’s wonderful St. George’s Cathedral. His outstanding works are still admired today – not only at Lviv’s Pinsel Museum, but also at a special 2013 exhibition at the world’s most famous museum: The Louvre. Unlike his works, Pinsel’s name was nearly lost to history. It was only in 1993, with the discovery of the Buchach Roman Catholic registries, that this distinctive artist’s identity was discovered. #4 – Ukraine Shines at Eurovision: Ukraine is a nation that is loaded with talent and perhaps nowhere has it been recognised as often than at Eurovision. The popular European pop music spectacle has made household names of many of Ukraine’s modern musical heroes. The list is a ‘who’s who’ of Ukrainian music – Oleksandr Ponamariov (2003), Ruslana (2004), Verka Serduchka (2007), Ani Lorak (2008), Svetlana Loboda (2009), Alyosha (2010), and Jamala (2016). Despite participating in only 13 contests, Ukraine has nine Top 10 placements, six Top 5 finishes, two runners-up (Serduchka & Lorak) and two champions (Ruslana & Jamala. #3 – Patriotism Becomes Chic: Ukraine has been in the forefront of international thought a lot recently (and not for particularly pleasant reasons), but its reach has extended far beyond the front page— whether you were aware or not, the Ukrainian influence has fully arrived in our closets. Whether it’s festival girl, wearing an embroidered peasant shirt hailing from the Eastern European region with a pair of denim cut-offs, or the Slavic red patterns on the runway at Valentino spring 2015 couture, Ukrainian traditional costume has knowingly and unknowingly

permeated fashion for years, and now the spotlight on the country’s aesthetic is in full swing. The comeback of the traditional designing roots of Ukrainian culture is somehow connected to nationalism and patriotism. Many Ukrainian designers have been feeling the necessity of showing their distinct peculiarities and cultural directions to the world. Lviv’s Oksana Karavanska have been using the ethnic motifs for years, including famously at New York Fashion Week in 2003. Another great tribute for the positive inspirational plague over the fashion world should be given to the newly set brand and design house Vyshyvanka by Vita Kin. It’s worth considering whether the rise of Ukrainian traditional costume in fashion is more than just au courant street-style bait. Historically, Ukrainians have attempted to separate themselves from the perception of their country as only “Little Russia,” especially now, when the political state is one of unrest (from the demonstrations in EuroMaidan to Russia’s invasion of Crimea).

There is a thought that the recent use of Ukrainian dress isn’t just a fashion statement, it’s a unifying statement. Today such fashion symbols as the vyshyvanka (embroidered shirt), tryzub (trident), and oseledets (Cossack hairstyle) have become mainstays of the fashion world. From the capital of Kyiv to the patriotic city of Lviv, vyshyvanka is the staple uniform for women, men, and children, who sport traditional and modern incarnations of the sartorial piece of history. #2 – Ukraine at Cannes: As noted above, Ukraine seems to have an unfair advantage when it comes to talent and when you look at the country’s success at the world-famous Cannes Film Festival, you can begin to see why. From Igor Strembitskyy’s impassioned short film Wayfarers that took the 2005 Palme d’Or in the short film competition, to Marina Vroda’s Phys. Ed. Class memoire that took the 2011 Palme d’Or in the same category, to Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy’s visionary

no-subtitled, sign language drama feature that walked away with the Canne’s 2014 Gan Foundation Support for Distribution Award along with a slew of other prizes.

The modern Golden Age of Ukrainian filmmaking continues to make the world take notice. #1 – The Okean Elzy Phenomenon: No discussion on modern Ukrainian culture would be complete without the mention of Leopolitan rock legends Okean Elzy.

Not only popular in Ukraine, the group is quite possibly the biggest musical act to come out ofany post-Soviet country – including Russia. Formed in the early days of Ukrainian independence in Lviv in 1994, the band has released 9 studio albums, 2 compilation albums, and a slew of popular songs to both critical and commercial success. The band continues to sell out stadiums – including 70,000+ in Kyiv and 50,000+ in Lviv – as part of their world tour in support of their newest album – 2016’s Bez Mezh. These are must-see events, so be sure to check out these modern legends as soon as you get the chance!

Top 5 Technology Moments #5 – iBlazr Blazes Trail: Conceptor, a Ukrainian start-up that specialises in mobile phone accessories, hit it big with their very first design – a smart LED flashlight for smart phones named iBlazr. Described as “the world’s most ultimate wireless flash”, the technology is now available in 108 official Apple retailers worldwide. The flashlight was funded through Kickstarter, a popular crowdfunding initiative, and has been so successful that they have launched another new technology – a super energy efficient LED case for iPhones. The technology harnesses electromagnetic energy from your phone, so no wires or charging is necessary. Keep your eyes open for more amazing products from these technological wizards!

#4 – Video Game Zombies Rule! When Ukrainian video game developer GSC Game World came out with the first-person shooter survival horror game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl in 2007, little did they know they’d developed a title that would become one of the most popular games of 2007 and spawn two hit sequels (Clear Sky & Call of Pripyat). Loosely based on the 1979 film Stalker, itself an adaptation of the novel Roadside Picnic, the game is set near the Chernobyl accident site and has players dealing with an alternate reality where a second explosion at the doomed reactor causes unusual changes to the surrounding environment. The game was praised for its visuals and gameplay and still has an 8.2 rating at IGN. #3 – Ukraine’s Antarctic Outreach: The National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine purchased the aging Vernadsky Research Base (formerly Faraday Station) from the UK in 1996 to establish programmes on meteorology, upper atmospheric physics, geomagnetism, ozone, seismology, glaciology, ecology, biology, and physiology research. Bought for the token amount of 1 British pound, the base employs 12 Ukrainian scientists.

In addition to all of the research, the base is known for having the “Southernmost Bar in the World”, where visitors can purchase shots of vodka for $3 USD. There is also a souvenir shop and post office, where you’ll need a $6 stamp to send the memento to your loved one.

The first Ukrainian to fly to the great beyond with the blue and yellow flag on his spacesuit was Leonid Kadenyuk in November 1997, when he hitched a ride with the US space shuttle Columbia. Ukrainian space scientists also worked as part of the Sea Launch consortium alongside counterparts from Norway, Russia, and the USA. Sea Launch was a service that launched commercial payloads from a mobile maritime launch platform near the Equator. The project was awarded the Space Foundation’s Space Achievement Award in 2000..

#2 – Ukraine in Space: Ukraine inherited a proud Soviet space heritage after gaining independence, with the Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk one of the primary cities for the development of missile and rocket

#1 – Biggest Plane in the World: Although the Antonov An-225 Mriya aircraft was designed in Kyiv in the late 80s – before Ukraine gained its independence – it gained its fame long after the fall of the

Soviet Union. Powered by six turbofan engines, it holds records for the longest and heaviest aircraft ever assembled. Codenamed “the Cossack” by NATO, the aircraft was initially designed to transport the Buran spacecraft. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the aircraft was refurbished and now acts as a commercial airline specialising in carrying oversized payloads. It holds world records for airlifted single item (189,980 kg), airlifted total payload (253,820 kg), and longest piece of air cargo (two 42 m wind turbine blades).

Top 5 Sports Moments #5 – Ukraine at the World Cup: Ukraine had a proud football history before the break-up of the Soviet Union, including famously starting 7 of 11 players for the USSR runners-up squad at EURO 88, but were forced to start from scratch after gaining independence. Despite developing world class talents such as 2004 Ballon d’Or winner (for European Footballer of the Year) Andriy Shevchenko, the team couldn’t manage to take the last step of qualifying for a major tournament, falling out at the playoff stage three separate times (1998, 2000, 2002). Finally, in late 2005 in Dnipropetrovsk, midfielder Ruslan Rotan scored an 86’ minute equaliser to win the group and put Ukraine in its first World Cup. The team didn’t disappoint either, dropping a 0:4 match to Spain before knocking off Saudi Arabia (4:0) and Tunisia (1:0) to set up a playoff date with undefeated Switzerland. After a 0:0 draw, Ukraine went through to the quarterfinals after not conceding a single penalty kick.

The magical run would end there, with a 0:3 defeat to eventual champion Italy. #4 – Baiul Wins 1st Olympic Gold: While Ukraine had become independent well before the 1992 Olympics, the country was unable to register in time with the IOC to compete under their own colours – much to the chagrin of 1992 men’s figure skating champion, Odesa’s Victor Petrenko (who still considers himself the first “true” Ukrainian Olympic champion). By the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, Ukraine was competing as its own country with Petrenko as its flagbearer. But the darling was 16-year-old Oksana Baiul, who had shocked the skating world by winning the 1993 World Championships. Baiul had to overcome a difficult life – she was orphaned 3 years earlier and was living with Petrenko and his coach in Odesa. In the highly anticipated women’s event (due to the Tonya Harding / Nancy Kerrigan fiasco), Baiul became Ukraine’s first Olympic champion.

Church. The popular Pope spoke about the need for Ukraine to embrace the West and for Kuchma to push forward with pro-Western reforms. He also reminded Ukrainians of “the terrible years of Soviet dictatorship” and that Ukraine’s natural identity is Western European. The Pope visited sites in both Kyiv and Lviv as part of his only trip to the country.

#3 – Ukraine Hosts EURO 2012: Many observers were sceptical when Ukraine and Poland decided to launch a bid to host Europe during the EURO 2012 competition. The tournament had never before been held so far east, neither team was a traditional European powerhouse, and there were plenty of other quality bids to choose from. In fact, the bid barely made it to the final round, collecting a single vote more than the eliminated Turkish bid. Italy was the frontrunner going into the bid, but Ukraine & Poland secured the tournament in April 2007. Lviv was one of 4 Ukrainian cities chosen to host, while Kyiv was chosen as the site for the final. Ukraine scored a memorable 2:1 comefrom-behind victory over Sweden in their opening game, thanks to two markers by aging captain Shevchenko, but fell to France (0:2) and England (0:1) to bow out. Improved roads, fast trains, new airports, and refurbished stadiums – including Lviv’s sparking new Arena Lviv – remain as reminders of the tournament’s legacy. #2 – Bubka’s World Records: There are few athletes in the last half century that have been as dominant as Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergei Bubka. For most of his career, his closest competitor was the record book. An Olympic champion and 6-time world champion, Bubka broke the world record an astounding 35 (!) times during his career (outdoor 17x, indoor 18x). From 1984 until 2014, Bubka held both the indoor and outdoor records for all but a few seconds (it was bested once, but he reset the record on the very next jump!). He was the first person to jump 6.10 metres, which he did in 1991 – no other athlete cleared 6.07 metres until 2014! In fact – he is responsible for nearly half (45%) of the times that 6 metres

has been cleared by all athletes! 15 years after his retirement, he still holds the world outdoor record (6.14 metres). He has won all kinds of awards and has become nearly as dominant in sports politics, as an effective and influential member of both the IAAF (athletics) and IOC. #1 – Klitschkos Own the Boxing World: It’d be difficult to overstate the impact that Ukraine’s Klitschko brothers have had on boxing. For 16 years, from 1999-2015, at least one of the brothers was World Champion for all but a few months. Even before they were dominant world champions, they were dominant amateurs – Wladimir winning the 1996 Olympic gold and Vitaliy a world championship runner-up. Not only were they the first brothers to be co-World Champions, but they managed to hold all 6 World Champion titles between them for nearly 2.5 years (2011-13). Their complete dominance of the world heavyweight division led to a Ukrainian boxing revolution that saw the sport become one of the most popular in the country and produce boxers like two-time Olympic champion Vasyl Lomachenko and Lviv’s-own Olympic champion Oleksandr Usyk – who won the WBO inter-continental title in Lviv in 2014 fighting for the Klitschko brothers’ K2 Promotions.

Top 5 Honourable Mention Moments #5 – The Ukrainian Bond Girl: Ukraine is quite well known abroad for producing some of the world’s most attractive singers, dancers, models, and actresses – but until Olga Kurylenko came along, none had been chosen to play the lucrative role as a ‘Bond girl’. Casted in 2008’s Quantum of Solace alongside Daniel Craig as James Bond, Berdiansk, Ukraine’s Kurylenko played Camille Montes, a Bolivian intelligence officer looking to seek revenge on the man that killed her family. Her success in that role, and the fame that it brought her, has allowed her to continue to feature in big-time films, including 2013’s Oblivion with Tom Cruise and 2014’s The Water Diviner with Russell Crowe. #4 – The Pope Visits Ukraine: Back in 2001, just 10 years after Ukraine gained independence, Pope John Paul II made a somewhat controversial visit to Ukraine at the behest of President Kuchma and Bishops of both the Greek and Roman Catholic Churches.

The Pope was hoping to facilitate cooperation between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches during his visit, but was boycotted by leaders of the Russian Orthodox

#3 – Police Get Complete Revamp: While there have been many reforms enacted since the fall of the Yanukovych government in early 2014, among the most easy to recognise is the change in the country’s police services. By abandoning the militaresque Soviet uniforms of the past and adopting chic American-style uniforms in their place, Ukrainian police now have the look of their European counterparts. More than that, an emphasis on youth and vitality has made these officers a photogenic hit for selfie-takers. With the force getting a complete revamp in 2016 – with all former police needing to re-apply and pass probation – there is hope that finally this much-maligned service in Ukraine will finally instil the confidence Ukrainians so desperately desire. #2 – The Budapest Memorandum: When Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, it immediately became the owner of the world’s 3rdlargest nuclear arsenal. While the command control of those nukes remained in Russia, the presence of the weapons in the country proved both an obstacle and an opportunity. So by late 1994, a decision was made on what to do with them – give them to Russia in return for security guarantees for Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. Signed by the 3 newly independent states alongside Russia, the US, and the UK, it was a major coup for peace and stability in the region – at least until the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014. The agreement will now serve either as evidence in an upcoming international law case or as a stark reminder that words on paper are no match to nuclear weapons in hand. #1 – UNESCO Recognises Lviv: Lviv received major recognition when in 1998 its historical centre became the first place in Ukraine to be recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since independence. The site was chosen for its mix of Eastern European, Italian, and German architectural styles and for the number of ethnic groups, including Jewish and Armenian, that lived interdependently in the area. Today, the Lviv Historic Centre Ensemble covers 120 hectares of the Medieval and Old Rus parts of the city right up to St. George’s Cathedral. This region features some of Lviv’s most iconic spots, such as Rynok Square, High Castle, the Dormition Church, the city’s Arsenal fortifications, the Armenian Church, and the Church of the Assumption. Since the recognition, Lviv has matured into one of Ukraine’s leading tourist destinations.

Top 5 Politics Moments #5 – Ukraine Turns Orange: Late 2004 was a time of turmoil in Ukraine. Political and economic reforms were slow, President Kuchma was barred from running for re-election due to term limits, and he was embroiled in the controversy surrounding the murder of Lviv journalist Georgiy Gongadze. The campaign was a bitter affair between the Kuchma’s Prime Minister and heir LVIV TODAY | Summer 2016

apparent Viktor Yanukovych and pro-European leaders Victor Yushchenko and Yuliya Tymoshenko. When Yanukovych was announced the winner despite losing the exit polls, widespread protest over the electoral fraud broke out around the country. Taking its name for the colour of Yushchenko’s party, the Orange Revolution became a major cultural affair. In the end, the protests were successful and the result of the fraudulent election was overturned. Yushchenko won the runoff vote and Yanukovych worked to rehabilitate his political career. #4 – EU-Bound: The defining geopolitical question of Ukraine’s first quarter-century was whether to develop closer ties with Russia and its neighbour states or with the European Union. At the same time, this question was the driving force behind most of Ukraine’s Presidential elections as well. The question came to a head in late 2013 when President Yanukovych decided to renege on a campaign promise and abandon signing the Association Agreement with the EU. Those events led to the EuroMaidan (see below), which culminated in his fleeing the country. In March 2014, just one month after he left, the Association Agreement was signed. The agreement is the first step in Ukraine’s desire to join the EU and will lead to increased trade, access to the European Investment Bank, visa-free travel for Ukrainians to the EU, equal rights for workers, and the modernisation of the economy. It was the culmination of 25 years of work and desire by the Ukrainian people.

#3 – Volunteer Patriots Protect the Motherland: While 2014 was a very difficult year for Ukraine, one thing is certain – there was no shortage of patriots willing to step up to protect the motherland. The year began with tens of thousands of Ukrainians congregating in Kyiv’s Independence Square, spending night and day in the cold, to stand up for their beliefs in a European-oriented Ukraine with a far less corrupt government. The many that paid the ultimate sacrifice in the protests were nicknamed ‘Heaven’s Hundred’. But they weren’t they only patriots to fight for their country that year. After the Russian annexation of Crimea and assistance to rebel separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk, many stepped up to fight in volunteer battalions, such as the Azov and Donbas battalions, to protect their country. To honour the sacrifice of the many volunteers that fought for (and still fight for) Ukraine, the government introduced a new title – Order of the Heaven’s Hundred Heroes – for civil courage, patriotism, and selfless service to the Ukrainian people and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. #2 – The Revolution of Dignity: Everything seemed to be going fine on the day of November 21st, 2013 – at least until President Yanukovych announced seemingly from nowhere that he would abandon Ukraine’s course for the EU in light of a closer relationship with Russia’s Eurasian Customs Union. The protests grew in size and intensity following his decision to forcefully remove protests from Kyiv’s Independence Square on November 30th, with protesters occupying central government buildings in Kyiv and across Ukraine

and toppling many statues of Lenin. Events became more dangerous after the passing of the socalled “Dictatorship Laws” in mid-January before culminating in the death of 100 protesters by Berkut police forces on February 18-20 – a brutal end to three months of protests. Yanukovych fled the country, a pro-European government was elected, and the country moved to solidify its ties with Europe while severing ties with its Soviet past. #1 – Ukraine Finally Gets its Independence: We couldn’t be celebrating 25 years, if there was no birth in the first place, right? After several aborted attempts at independence in the past, the Soviet reforms of the late 1980s finally brought about what many Ukrainians had until then only dreamt about – their own state. The first major event was in January 1990 when over 300,000 Ukrainians formed a human chain between Kyiv and Lviv in support of independence. A few months later, on August 24th 1991 – in response to an unsuccessful coup in Moscow – the Ukrainian parliament passed the Act of Independence. That proclamation was overwhelmingly supported by Ukrainians when over 92% voted in support in a referendum on December 1st. Majorities in every region, including Crimea and the Donbas, voted in favour. The secession of Ukraine – the 2nd-most powerful state in the USSR – ended any realistic hope of keeping the Soviet Union together. It is 25 years this August 24th since that momentous and courageous decision was taken by Ukrainian politicians. In light of that – happy 25th anniversary Ukraine!

This year the event will feature colourful performances from foreign ensembles, spectacular marching parades through central Lviv, national cuisine presentations, workshops on singing and dancing, and plenty more! This year’s event will feature dance ensembles from Serbia, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Italy, and Ukraine. The Etno-Fashion project is expected to be a highlight and will showcase national outfits from different countries as well as collections by Ukrainian and foreign designers in a fashion show format. You won’t want to miss out on this exceptional opportunity to get acquainted with the cultural and music traditions of so many countries though these bright and colourful shows, concerts, and events throughout the festival.

Zaxidfest – perhaps Western Ukraine’s largest music festival – once again returns to the Lviv Region in the Village of Rodatychy this August. Since its inception in 2009, Zaxidfest has become one of the most powerful art events in Ukraine. Festival organisers try to pull people away from offices and laptops in order to support modern Ukrainian art through music, literature, and theatre. Each year, they hope to take another step towards creating a conscious society – a new generation able to think deeply. The Tustan Fortress, located in the medieval village of Urich in the Skole region, has always maintained its link with Ukraine’s past. It’s no wonder that one of Ukraine’s leading medieval festivals was launched there in 2006. Woodstock Ukraine is a summertime festival that takes place on the territory of Lviv region’s Svirzh Castle. This musical getaway features workshops, theatrical performances, autograph sessions, sing-alongs, tea ceremonies, hatha yoga, a vegetarian food fair, and canoe competitions in addition to the concert performances that the festival is famous for.

The event’s slogan of “peace, love, and music” is more than just empty words – the festival has set out to be a meeting place for youth that do not want war. The event aims to unite people from different parts of our country in the name of peace, volunteer and charity development, and the popularisation of Ukrainian music and bands. Music fans are probably aware that the first Woodstock in 1969 became an act of protest against the war in Vietnam. The popular holiday destination of Chernomorsk town at Odesa Region is this year’s host for the chic Jazz Koktebel Festival from August 25–28. From its roots as a private initiative of founder Dmitriy Kiselev back in 2003, Koktebel has become a huge movement that greatly influences the world of European jazz music. RESPUBLICA FESTIVAL September 1–4, Virmenska Square in Kamianets-Podilskyi (270 km from Lviv) Respbulica is a modern street art festival in all of its manifestations: music, photography, dance, graffiti – it has it all. The main idea of the festival is to popularise public activism and volunteering by transforming depressed city districts step-by-step into museums of social and territorial art. UKRAINIAN-CANADIAN ROCKERS ‘TUT I TAM’ July 16–17, Rynok square The Ukrainian-Canadian rock band Tut i Tam (Here and There) – named after a popular children’s tale – are making two stops in Lviv on their 2016 Ukrainian tour. The band is set to play at the International Ukrainian Dance & Culture Festival – a one-time event being held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Ukrainian independence – on July 16th at 20:00 and in Lviv’s picturesque Rynok Square, along with Burdon, on July 17th at 19:00. Hailing from Saskatoon, Canada, the group has used a fusion of folk-rock, dance, ska, reggae, and village influences to become one of Canada’s preeminent Ukrainian-Canadian bands. WORLD SPACE MODEL CHAMPIONSHIPS COMING TO LVIV! August 22–30 in the Village of Velykyi Doroshiv (14 km from Lviv) The FAI World Space Models Championship will be held in Ukraine this year for the first time – namely in the Lviv region from August 22-30. Leopolitans and guests of the city are invited to attend this one-of-a-kind event that includes breathtaking rocket launches, hands-on activities for children, and other fun outdoor activities. The Championship will take place in the Village of Velykyi Doroshiv near the Western Ukrainian capital of Lviv.

Over 100,000 square metres will be divided into several zones for the competition, including a launch area, a guest area, and an exhibit zone. The event is set to welcome more than 300 competitors from 20 teams and 20

countries from all around the world, including Canada, the USA, China, and Japan. The ‘out-of-this-world’ event is set to feature over 1000 spectacular rocket launches! All participants will have designed their own rockets for launch and will be competing for a piece of the 1900 EUR competition prize. Prizes will also be awarded for: longest flight duration, highest launch, and most realistic rocket model. With Ukrainian Independence Day taking place on August 24th, a special competition of S2/P rockets will be launched carrying Ukrainian eggs. The winner will have to safely return their golden-centred cargo back to earth unbroken. Other activities will include

a Copter Race, paint fights, and rocket-making classes for kids so that families will find something to entertain them throughout the 4-day festival. LVIV TO HOST WORLD STRONGEST TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP July 17th, Arena Lviv (199 Stryiska St.) Leopolitan sports enthusiasts and guests of the city need to mark July 17th on their calendars as some of the world’s strongest men will gather for the World Strongest Team Championship. Sixteen teams of muscle-bound competitors from around the globe will battle for the title of “World’s Strongest Nation” right here in our own Arena Lviv. Ukraine will be represented by the enormous duo of Oleksandr Lashyn and Lviv’s-own Volodomyr Reksha. Lashyn is a professional strongman competitor that regularly competes in both the WSF World Cup as well as the WSF World Team Cup. He has also competed in the Strongman Champions League and won the title of Ukraine’s Strongest Man in 2011, while finishing 3rd at the 2008 World Log Lift Championships. Reksha was born in Lviv and began strength training at a gym near his house at an early age. He graduated from the Lviv State University of Physical Culture and became a member of the Ukrainian weightlifting team by 21. He started his strongman career in 2010 and last year became vice-champion in the 105kg division at the Arnold Strongman Classic – one of the world’s most prestigious competitions organised as part of the annual Arnold Schwarzenegger sports festival. Competitors will be expected to push their abilities to the limit with events such as the two-man log lift, the Atlas stones, a tug-of-war, and Conan’s wheel – where the athletes pick up more than 400 kilograms and walk around a track as far as possible. The event will also feature a rich and entertaining programme complete with sport-related exhibitions, workshops for both children and adults, and an exciting lottery where guests can win a new Ford Fiesta car! Як народилася ідея створювати вишиті вироби? Чи це ваша професійна спеціальність? За освітою я інженер-технолог харчової галузі, а ідея створення одягу виникла так: побачивши, що на ринку бракує продукції з вишивкою на той час я вирішив відкрити власне виробництво вишитого одягу. Весь процес почався у гаражі і став успішним – наші речі користувалися попитом. Стало зрозумілим, що потрібно розширюватись,

почала зароджувалась наша фабрика: орендували приміщення, підібрали кадри. На початку ми створювали лише футболки з вишивкою – вони й зараз найбільш популярні серед наших виробів – а на сьогодні “Галичанка” може запропонувати величезний асортимент блуз, сорочок, тунік, різноманітних суконь, пальто, домашнього текстилю. До того ж ще почали виробляти й вишите взуття. Кожен виріб від “Галичанки” зручний та практичний у побуті та довго служитиме, не втрачаючи первозданної естетики. Як виглядає процес створення нових візерунків для вишиванок? Щодня я і наш колектив працюємо над створенням нових моделей, це натхнений і творчий момент у житті кожного працівника. Щомісяця “Галичанка” розробляє біля 5 нових моделей. Серед тканин, що використовуються у пошитті одягу – льон та домоткане полотно. Коли до кожного із нас приходить ідея щодо створення певної моделі, ми обговорюємо усі моменти й деталі виробу. Саме у груповій динаміці колективу й з’являються гарні речі. З особливою уважністю ми ставимося до якості одягу та текстилю, адже впевнені, українське має бути найкращим!

Фінансова криза, охопила і нас, адже купівельна спроможність покупців знизилась, але на теперішній час ситуація покращилась, зросли обсяги продажів. Звісно, ми налаштовані оптимістично, тому бачимо успішне майбутне нашої фабрики і колективу. До речі, впевнений, що ще зовсім трішки й ми забудемо за минулі біди і проблеми, для України настануть золоті часи та відбудеться різкий економічний підйом.

Які ваші плани на майбутнє? Слава Богу, на сьогодніший день ми є лідерами з виготовлення модного одягу з елементами сучасної вишивки. Ми надалі є і будемо найкращими у своїй сфері! Цього року “Галичанка” буде Генеральним партнером LvivFashionWeek та представить на ньому колекцію одягу від Павла Мільчарека. Each day I work with my staff on new designs, and it is a very inspiring and creative process for all of our workers. Galychanka launches 5 new cuts every month. We use linen and homespun cloth for all of our outfits. When someone comes up with a good idea regarding outfit design, we sit together and discuss the details and production techniques. It is the dynamic of the team that leads to such wonderful outfits. We care about the quality of our clothing and home textiles and ensure that these Ukrainian goods are only the best!

How did Galychanka weather the financial crisis in Ukraine? Are you optimistic about the future?

Like everybody else, the financial crisis had an impact on us as well – especially as people’s purchasing power became very low. Today the situation is much better and are sales are going well. Sure, we are optimistic about the factory’s and staff’s futures. We hope that very soon we will be able to forget about all the troubles and that Ukraine will enter into a ‘golden age’ of rapid economic recovery.

What are your future plans?

T

he patriotic wave sweeping Ukraine has brought national clothing to the forefront, where Ukrainians are still trying to establish their identity. While travelling abroad, now we can recognise our fellow compatriots by their vyshyvankas (embroidered shirts), blue and yellow flags, and traditional floral wreaths. It’s only natural that Lviv Today presents readers with Lviv’s Galychanka brand, who specialise in the production of clothing and accessories in the ethnostyle. Here is our interview with Galychanka owner Pavlo Milcharek.

Thank goodness that today we are leaders in the production of stylish elements with elements of modern embroidery – and we plan to stay at the top of the field! This year Galychanka will become a General Partner of Lviv Fashion Week and will present a collection by Pavlo Milcharek.

How did you come up with the idea of the production of embroidered goods? Is it your primary professional specialisation?

I studied production engineering in the food industry, but I discovered the idea of creating embroidered goods when I realised that there were not enough embroidered clothes in the market. It all started in the garage and soon enough the business became successful – our goods sold well! The need for expansion became clear, so the factory idea started to take shape when we rented a premises and hired staff. At the beginning, we created only embroidered t-shirts, which are still very popular today despite the fact we now offer a huge assortment of dresses, blouses, shirts, tunics, coats, overcoats, and home textiles. We’ve even started the production of embroidered shoes! Each piece by Galychanka is comfortable and practical, with the focus on wearability, and of course – on eye-catching aesthetics.

What makes Galychanka different from other producers? What’s your key element?

Yes, the popularity of our goods is increasing – but so is the popularity of our competitors. We look at this situation as an opportunity to improve ourselves and come up with something new. Our clientele is diverse as we offer highquality alongside elegant looks. Ladies will be interested in not only our casual outfits, but also our elegant festive clothing. Men are happy to buy embroidered t-shirts that go well together with jeans and a jacket. Children are always enthusiastic about our floral and geometrical

The Lviv Tourist Alliance (LTA) was created to unite resources to attract more guests to the city, as well as to increases the incomes of usinesses and the municipal economy as well.

An open meeting was held on July 1st to discuss the tasks of the organisation as well as difficulties with airline connections.

Several new members joined the LTA, including: the Arzinger legal company, the Fromage d’Elise family farm, the SOTИ brand, and Hotel Taxi.

LVIV SOUVENIR This project will provide incentives to local artists to create highquality souvenirs that are produced locally.

LVIV TOURIST PASS This project will offer a unique package of services for those that travel to Lviv and area. Tourists will get all the necessary services, including free entrance fees to Lviv’s most famous artistic establishments, discounts on local transport, internet access, and plenty more.

SUPPORTING LOCAL PROJECTS: In 2016 the LTA will support the Etnovyr folk festival and the Win With the Lion tourist forum.

ALFA JAZZ FEST 2016 Lviv was buzzing from June 24th-28th as Alfa Jazz Fest – one of the most important open-air jazz festivals in Eastern Europe – jived into town. Attracting more than 40,000 visitors, this year’s world class entertainers performed at three stages throughout the city – Rynok Square, Potocky Palace Yard, and the Bohdan Khmelnytsky Park of Culture & Leisure. Headliners from around the world wowed Leopolitan jazz lovers and guests of the city throughout the festival, including Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves, and Cuban trumpet virtuoso Arturo Sandoval. It’s possible that this year’s most popular performer was famed American pianist Michael Abene, although Eurovision 2016 champion Jamala’s ‘The Soul of Jamala’ concert was also a highly sought-after ticket. the audience grooving to hits from her latest album Breath. The festival also saw the Eddy Rozner Alfa Jazz Music Award presented to “one who has made a considerable contribution to the development and promotion of jazz throughout the world”. This year’s winner was American jazz fusion guitarist Pat Metheny – among the most dominant guitarists of the last 40 years. This year also featured the introduction of the Street Music by Alfa Jazz contest, which featured musicians and bands of all kinds of styles performing on street platforms in the hopes of claiming the 15,000 UAH gift certificate for musical equipment. Congratulations to the winners – Kharkiv’s Heart Beat Brass Band and Dnipro-Kyiv’s Tetyana Honcharova Band, who was awarded a special prize.

UKRAINIAN HAUTE COUTURE As part of the Alfa Jazz Fest 2016 festivities, famed Ukrainian fashion designer Oksana Karavanska – one of the biggest names in fashion over the last decade – hosted a chic fashion show featuring her latest designs.

The elegant event was hosted at the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Gardens, normally closed to the public, but opened exclusively to guests of Alfa Jazz Fest. The Vyshyvanka Couture Fashion Show dazzled the audience with stunning one-of-a-kind haute couture fashions inspired by prominent Ukrainian women, such as: Anna Yaroslavna, Queen of France, Opera diva Solomiya Krushelnytska, and Sofia FredroSheptytska – the mother of the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Andrey Sheptytsky. Another source of inspiration Karavanska have found in spectacular “100 Fairytales” series illustrated by recognized Ukrainian artist Kateryna Shtanko and printed by well-established A-BA-BA-HA-LA-MA-HA Publishing house:

fashion designer managed to transfer fairytale images into dresses and skirts. In addition to the trendy ethnic motifs that have become a staple of contemporary Ukrainian fashion, the collection showcases glimpses of Ukrainian history, culture, and art from around the country.

Every piece was beautifully complimented by accessories made by Ukrainian jewellery designer Roksolana Shymchuk. The event attracted some of the country’s most influential people, where Ukrainian fashionistas rubbed elbows with entertainers and cultural icons. Just a few of the names on the guest list included: Ukrainian First Lady Maryna Poroshenko and her son, Vogue Ukraine Editor-in-Chief Masha Tsukanova, actress Olga Lavrenyuk, Ukrainian poet Marjana Savka, Leopolitan a cappella legends Pikkardiyska Tertsiya, musician Pavlo Tabakov, Ukrainian Catholic University President Borys Gudziak, and TV personalities Yuriy Gorbunov, Katya Osadcha, and Masha Efrosinina.

RAPID TRIDENT '16 Rapid Trident ’16 – an exercise involving NATO and Partnership for Peace nations, officially kicked off at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in Yavoriv (Lviv Region) on June 27th.

The exercise included nearly 2,000 personnel from Ukraine, the United States, Bulgaria, Canada, Georgia, Great Britain, Moldova, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden and Turkey. Over the course of the 2-week training exercise, the partner nations conducted a brigade-level command post exercise integrated with both situational and field-training exercises. The effort is aimed at enhancing joint combined interoperability among NATO, Ukrainian, and partner nations. This year’s focus was on defensive operations and providing experience for Ukrainian soldiers that had completed the 55-day Joint Multinational Training Group program.

RAPID TRIDENT '16 Rapid Trident '16 – спільні навчання збройних сил НАТО і Партнерства заради миру офіційно стартували в міжнародному Центрі безпеки та миротворчості в Яворові Львівської обл. 27 червня. У цих навчаннях взяли участь близько 2000 військовиків з України, США, Болгарії, Канади, Грузії, Великобританії, Молдови, Литви, Норвегії, Польщі, Румунії, Швеції і Туреччини. Протягом 2 тижнів навчань країни-партнери провели бригадні командноштабні навчання в поєднанні з ситуаційними і польовими навчаннями. Зусилля організаторів були спрямовані на розширення комбінованої взаємодії між військами НАТО, України та країн-партнерів. Головними завданнями цього року були оборонні операції і розширення досвіду українських військовослужбовців, які завершили 55-денну програму спільних багатонаціональних навчань.

BRITISHUKRAINIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HOSTS ANNUAL LVIV LUNCHEON The British-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce, along with the assistance of the Lviv Chamber of Commerce and in partnership with Alfa Jazz Fest, hosted their annual Lviv Luncheon & Reception at the Citadel Inn Hotel’s Garmata Restaurant on June 24th.

The event proudly featured special guests Rufat Alimardanov (Regional Head of IFC in Ukraine & Belarus), Francis Malige (Managing Director of EBRD in Eastern Europe & the Caucasus), and Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi. The former two spoke about the role international financial institutions play, while the Mayor spoke about investment opportunities in the city.

In addition to these special guests, the event featured local and regional government officials as well as media representatives and Leopolitan business leaders.

KYLYM: CONTEMPORARY UKRAINIAN ARTISTS The Lviv Art Plalce will play host to the Kylym: Contemporary Ukrainian Artists exhibition, featuring the works of over 20 talented artists until July 24th.

Paintings, sculptures, installations, and video art by the likes of Roman Minin, Nazar Bilyk, and Tetyana Malynovska will be on display for Leopolitan art lovers and guests of the city. The exhibition showcases a combination of traditional art with modern artistic techniques and brings alive Ukrainian ethnic culture through the addition of folk symbols to modern-day art. It also provides a showcase to talented, up-and-coming Ukrainian artists. The exhibition was first displayed in the Carpathian region in April at the Zenko Foundation. Following its stay in the Western Ukrainian capital, the exhibition will travel to Kyiv’s Mystetskyi Arsenal, where it will be on display until August 19th, before finishing in Kharkiv’s Ermilov Centre.

КИЛИМ: СУЧАСНІ УКРАЇНСЬКІ МИТЦІ У залах львівського палацу мистецтв проходить виставка під назвою "КИЛИМ" Сучасні українські митці", на якій представлені роботи понад 20 талановитих художників, кожен з яких представляє своє бачення традиційного мистецтва у сучасному світі. Картини, скульптури, інсталяції, відео-арт авторів Романа Мініна, Назара Білика і Тетяни Малиновської зможуть оглянути любителі мистецтва, львів’яни та гості міста. Проект задуманий як мандрівний і вперше був представлений ще 8 квітня в с. Татарів, Івано-Франківської обл. завдяки зусиллям мистецької організації Zenko Foundation. В кожному місті проект буде розширюватись і змінюватись, додаючи до експозиції нові твори і нових авторів. Після свого перебування в Західній столиці до 24-го липня, виставка буде експонуватись в Києві в "Мистецькому Арсеналі" до 19 серпня, а потім її можна буде побачити у харківському "Єрмілов Центрі".

PROVOCATIVE EXHIBITION

BY ANNA KASHKADAMOVA Grybogolovi (Mushroomheads) is a series of provocative paintings by young Leopolitan artist Anna Kashkadamova. In her works she presents the feminine principle in an unexpected, yet bold and eloquent way.

Each piece in her Grybogolovi series features a separate story – just as each woman and each mushroom has their own. Kashkadamova was born and raised in Lviv and graduated from the Lviv Art Academy.

У своїх роботах вона представляє жіноче начало несподіваним, але сміливим і красномовним способом. Кожна робота в серії "Грибоголові" має свою історію – так само, як кожна жінка і кожен гриб має свою власну. Анна Кашкадамова народилась і виросла у Львові і закінчила Львівську академію мистецтв.

THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO PREMIERES The Marriage of Figaro, a comic opera in two acts by legendary Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, premiered at Lviv’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre last month.

While the opera remains a classic, the tale has always contained a hint of subversion.

Sung in its original Italian with Ukrainian subtitles, it’s been updated to a modern setting inside a privileged gated community where the servant subclass and the antics of a grabby, entitled elite still resonate. The Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre’s staff of art director Vasyl Vovkun, conductor Yuriy Berveckyy, costume designer Maryana Gromysh, and choreographer Sergiy Naenko worked with the Music Academy Opera Studio to deliver maybe their hippest, most experimental opera of the year. By updating the story and spectacle, but keeping the story’s lively, comic, and slightlycrazed aesthetic, the creative team has put together an opera that speaks to both a broader and younger audience. If you like theatre, but struggle to relate to opera – or if you like opera, but want to see it in a modern context – this is the show for you!

CHOPIN'S NEW MELODY! The Chopin restaurant has once again found a way to amaze its guests. As always, Lviv Today is cordially welcomed by restaurant director and sommelier Kostyantyn Chernenko, who introduces us to the venue’s new chief cook Anton Timchenko.

At 28, he is new to Lviv from Kyiv, but he’s already adding his own notes to the restaurant’s melody, and is eager to share with us his views and future plans.

How did your career as a cook begin?

Both my mother and grandmother were excellent cooks, so I was greatly impressed by the cooking atmosphere since my childhood. Inspired by the charismatic and creative British chef Jamie Oliver, who is both a restaurant owner and TV show host, I decided to study at a culinary college. Later I found my first job at Kharkiv’s Sushiya and spent half of my salary on culinary books and videos. Whenever a foreign master chef came to the city I volunteered to help out to get the chance to study something new. I started working at a new restaurant in Byelgorod in 2012 and later in Yalta and Voronezh before finally landing at Kyiv’s famed Mansarda. I finished courses at the Kyiv Association of Chief Cooks and am grateful to Mr. Igor Bragin for all of his support and fine education.

What exactly is your job at Chopin?

What specialities do you plan to offer to your guests?

The main job of any Chief Cook is to make the restaurant successful. Of course, I have my own favourite specialities – I’m fond of using local goods like parsnip, beet, and celery root, which are often underestimated by other cooks. Those vegetables are perfect for crème-soup or mousse. I’m also very eager to modify classical recipes. For example, dishes like ‘Buckweatto’ (like risotto, but with buckwheat) or Barleyotto (ditto, with barley instead). My main task is to show guests, including tourists, that local goods are well-suited for the creation of a chef’s cuisine. Also, we plan to offer seasonal dishes on the Chopin menu.

Chopin is already known for their open brazier.

What is to become of it?

To numerous mega-tasty meat dishes cooked on grill we plan to add fresh seafood delivered from Odessa, which within 3 days after fishing out will be served chilled on the table. We will delight with Ukrainian mussels, rapana, dog-fish, flounder, goatfish – all very fresh and on affordable prices.

I really don’t like cooking with deep freezed products, even vegetables. It looks like my mission in “Chopin” will be to build up important network between supplier-cook-guest. And if I’ll do it right everyone will be happy and content! I extend a warm welcome to everyone to come to “chopin” and taste our new European menu!

Моя перша робота – в Сушії у Харкові, півзарплати я витрачав на кулінарні книжки, відео; коли приїжджав шеф-кухар з-за кордону, я завжди просився в помічники на будь-яку роботу, тільки щоб навчитись чогось нового. У 2012 працював у новому ресторані в Бєлгороді, потім були Ялта, Воронєж та Київ (ресторан “Мансарда”). Я закінчив курси Київської асоціації шефповарів й дуже вдячний їх президенту Ігорю Брагіну за науку та підтримку. Яка ваша місія в “Шопені”? Які модні новинки чекають на ваших гостей?

Першочергове завдання шефкухаря, щоб ресторан був успішним. Звичайно у мене є свої уподобання – я дуже люблю локальні продукти, такі як пастернак, буряк, селеру, які насправді недооцінюють наші кухарі. З них можна робити надзвичайні крем-супи, муси. Також я люблю змінювати відомі рецепти, наприклад зробити гречотто чи перлотто замість різотто. Моя задача – продемонструвати гостям, у т.ч. туристам, що з місцевих продуктів можна творити авторську кухню. Також у новому меню “Шопена” будуть сезонні пропозиції. Особливість ресторану Шопен – відкритий мангал. Які зміни плануються тут? До численних мегасмачних мясних блюд, приготовлених нами на вогні плануємо додати свіжі морепродукти з Одеси, які вже через 3 дні після вилову в охолодженому вигляді будуть на столі. Це й українська мідія, й рапан, катран, барабулька, камбала. Окрім того, що це доступно за ціною – це в першу чергу свіжі продукти. Насправді не люблю використовувати заморожені продукти, навіть овочі. Головне моє завдання в “Шопені” – правильно вибудувати дуже важливий ланцюжок – постачальникшеф-гість. Якщо все вдасться – всі сторони будуть дуже задоволеними! Тому гостинно запрошую всіх у “Шопен” продегустувати нове європейське меню!

EBA TOP NETWORKING The EBA was pleased to bring together members from across Ukraine to the EBA Top Networking event on June 24th to experience jazz-crazy Lviv for one of the best business meetings organised to coincide with the popular Alpha Jazz Fest. The event featured the likes of Krzysztof Sidletskyy (EBA President, Astellas Pharma Europe BV), Alexey Kredisov (EBA Vice-President, EY), Taras Lukachuk (Jacobs Ukraine), and Volodomyr Lavrenchuk (Raiffeisen Bank Aval), who shared their managerial experience and thoughts on what to do today to have a better tomorrow.

EBA LVIV SUCCESS-IN-ACTION PROJECT The Eco-Optima management team invited EBA member companies for a special meeting under the EBA Lviv Success-in-Action project on June 10th. EcoOptima is a Ukrainian company that produces alternative energy resources.

Participants had the opportunity to question company owners and discover how the wind electricity station in Stariy Sambir works. We are grateful to EcoOptima for their warm reception and for broadening our horizons in the area of alternative energy production. EBA TAX & ACCOUNTING COMMITTEE MEETING The concept of BEPS plan implementation and the process of ‘de-offshorisation’ in Ukraine were the most talked-about topics at last months’ meeting in Lviv. The presidential decree “On measures to counteract the reduction of the tax base and moving profits abroad” (#180/2016), signed on April 28th

of this year, has initiated this process. So in order to clarify what businesses should expect to do to handle these changes, the Head of the Tax & Accounting Committee Ihor Pikhurko invited Olena Voznyuk and Taras Polyanskyi form Nexia DK to discuss the topic.

EBA WORKSHOP WITH DR. NIKOLAOS DIMITRIADIS Markian Malskyy, PhD Partner at Arzinger Law Firm, attorney-at-law Q: Dear colleagues, My name is Mark and I represent a company from England that owns 20% of the share capital of Ukrainian Limited Liability Company. As a foreign investor due to the restrictions of the National Bank of Ukraine my company could not get its dividends in foreign currency. But as I found out, recently these restrictions have been partially canceled.

Could you please advise me what is the current situation in Ukraine with the payments of dividends in foreign currency to the investors abroad?

EBA members started their Friday morning on June 16th with a unique workshop by Dr. Nikolaos Dimitriadis – the Development Director at the University of Sheffield.

The session spoke about leadership and effective use of employees in a company’s workflow by using the principles of neuroscience. Dr. Dimitriadis appealed to our brains, our feelings, and our personal management styles. While we had many insights from his speech, some of his thoughts were particularly interesting. For example, nowadays the most successful companies do not necessarily need hundreds of hectares of land, factories, or other assets; intellectual capital and human resources are just as important! Look at Google or Facebook. We cannot predict what will happen in the near future, so we should learn to be more flexible and to value our employees.

An important part of a successful company is its emotional capital, consisting of authenticity (real value or consistent behaviour), pride (genuine recognition), attachment (exchange of opinion), and fun (encouragement of innovation). The presence of these factors contributes to the loyalty of employees. We would like to thank Dr. Dimitriadis and Vasyl Buzhak (Country Manager in Ukraine, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield) for their enthusiasm and insights! Dear Mark, Indeed, recently it was prohibited to buy and transfer foreign currency to return the dividends to the foreign investors abroad.

It was a big problem for the foreign investors. Actually, they lost interest to invest in Ukraine. Consequently it caused huge problems for Ukrainian market so the Board of the National Bank of Ukraine had to take some measures to rescue the national market.

Thus, last amendments provided by the Resolution of the Board of the National Bank of Ukraine No. 342 from June 7, 2016 "On settlement of the situation on the money and currency market of Ukraine" have established some exceptions from the restriction on buying and transferring of foreign currency in order to return the dividends to the investors abroad.

According to para 18 of the above mentioned Resolution, since June 13, 2016, this restriction doesn’t affect the buying/transferring of foreign currency in order to return abroad dividends on corporate rights/shares for 2014 and 2015, if the following conditions are simultaneously observed: - the buying/transferring of foreign currency is performed by the issuer of these corporate rights/shares, depository institution that serves the account or directly by the foreign investor; - the total amount of the dividends bought/transferred by the issuer of corporate rights/shares, depository institution or foreign investor during a calendar month may not exceed the higher of the following limit values: 1 000 000 USD or 10% of the dividends that are/were to be returned abroad by this person (but not exceeding 5 000 000 USD).

- the issuer of corporate rights/shares, depository institution or foreign investor buys/transfers the foreign currency abroad through one authorized bank (by own choice). This bank can be changed on basis of a corresponding written request of the client to the new bank.

This is the first step of the National Bank of Ukraine towards the complete cancellation of this restriction. We expect the following actions of the National Bank of Ukraine to improve the situation of foreign investors in Ukraine.

SHOOT FOR GOLD IN RIO When the world gathers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 5th for the 28th Summer Olympic Games, over 10,000 of the world’s finest athletes – representing at least 207 nations – will walk into Brazil’s illustrious Maracana Stadium. Among them will be nearly 200 of Ukraine’s best sportspersons competing in 21 different sports, including – as always – several from Lviv. Ukraine has several serious medal contenders, including Lviv’s-own Yuliya

Tkach in women’s freestyle wrestling. But as you’ll discover below, this year’s Leopolitan Olympians are simply the next step in a long and distinguished line of world-class athletes to come out of the city. With 306 sets of medals to be awarded over just 17 days of competition, August is sure to be jam-packed with compelling sporting action. So here’s what you need to know about Lviv and Ukraine at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

LVIV’S PROUD OLYMPIC HERITAGE Lviv has sent over two dozen athletes to the Summer Olympic Games virtually since 1912 – although these talented young men and women have had to compete for five (!) different flags: Austria-Hungary (until the 1912 Stockholm Olympics), Poland (from Antwerp 1920 to Berlin 1936), USSR (from London 1948 to Seoul 1988), for the “Unified Team” of former Soviet states (Barcelona 1992), and finally for Ukraine (since Atlanta 1996). During that time, Lviv has welcomed home many champions – including two of Ukraine’s six gold medals in London 2010: women’s épée fencing champion Yana Shemyakina and heavyweight boxing champion and current WBO intercontinental champion Oleksandr Usyk. Over the years, Leopolitan athletes have excelled in many Olympic disciplines and have medalled in many of them, including: archery, athletics, boxing, equestrian, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, and wrestling.

Some of Ukraine’s finest athletes hail from the Western Ukrainian capital, such as gymnast and professor at Lviv Institute of Physical Culture Victor Chukarin (top athlete at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, 1954 world champion, and 11-time Olympic medallist) and long jumper Igor Ter-Ovanesyan (5-time Olympian, 2-time Olympic medallist, with the world’s best jump in 4 different years), and Dynamo Lviv’s fencer Shemyakina (2-time Olympian, 2012 Olympic champion, and 2005 European Champion). LVIV HOPES LVIV AT RIO 2016 Perhaps Lviv’s best chance to see a homegrown Olympic champion in Rio this summer is in the woman’s wrestling competition, where Lviv will feature three athletes: Yulia Tkach, Alla Cherkasova, and Julia Havaldzhy. Tkach, the 2014 world champion in the 63 kg division, is the favourite going into the competition and remains Lviv’s brightest hope for an Olympic champion. Archer Veronika Marchenko might have something to say about that, as she has had a superb season capped by a QF run at the world championships. Ukraine will be solid in fencing this year as well, and Lviv will be sending three athletes with them – Ksenia Panteleeva, Anfisa Pochkalova, and Yana Shemyakina – hoping to repeat Shemyakina’s success in London 2012. Lviv has also become the Ukrainian hotbed of shooting, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see a champion come out of Oleg Tsarkov, Roman Bondaruk, or Pavlo Korostylov. Bondaruk, who trains at Dynamo Lviv, finished 12th in London but claimed gold at the European championships in 2013. Other athletes to watch include Andriy Fedechko in the modern pentathlon and Anastasia Wozniak in gymnastics.

Rugby Sevens: Europe Trophy The second leg of the Rugby Europe Men’s Sevens Trophy was played in Prague, Czech Republic from July 2nd3rd and saw the Ukrainian team walk away with the silver medal. This was one step better than the team’s 3rdplace finish in the first leg in Malmo, Sweden the month before. Congratulations to the Ukrainian players, especially Lviv Sokil’s Pavlo Chekhovskyi, Mykhaylo Tarasenko, and Artem Glynka.

Регбі-7: Canoe Sprint: European Championships The city of Moscow, Russia was the site for the 28th European Canoe Sprint Championships from June 24th-26th. Organised by the European Canoe Association, this international canoe and kayak sprint event featured athletes from 37 nations this year. Even though some of the sport’s biggest stars were absent as they prepare for the Olympic Games, many former European and World Championship medallists still made the trek to Moscow’s Krylatskoye Olympic racing course. The Ukrainian quartet of Denys Kovalenko, Denys Kamerylov, Eduard Shemetylo, and Lviv’s-own Vitaliy Verheles claimed silver in the C-4 1000m event on the first day of competition, while Kamerylov and Verheles picked up bronze in the C-2 500m on the final day of competition. Congratulations to all the Ukrainian athletes – in particular to Lviv’s Vitaliy Verheles!

Чемпіонат Європи На другому етапі чемпіонату Європи з регбі-7 серед чоловіків, що був зіграний в Празі 2-3 липня, українська команда здобула срібну медаль. Це на рівень вище, ніж 3 місце в першому матчі командного турніру, що відбувся у шведському місті Мальме за місяць до цього. Вітаємо українських гравців, особливо Павла Чеховського, Михайла Тарасенка і Артема Глинку зі львівського "Сокола"!

Байдарки і каное: Чемпіонат Європи У Москві 24-26 червня відбувся 28 чемпіонат Європи у змаганнях на байдарках і каное, організований Європейською асоціацією каное. Цього року у змаганнях взяли участь спортсмени з 37 країн. Хоча й деякі з найбільших зірок спорту були відсутні, зайняті підготовкою до Олімпійських ігор, багато призерів чемпіонатів Європи та світу виступили на знаменитому олімпійському комплексі у Крилатському. Український квартет Денис Коваленко, Денис Камерилов, Едуард Шеметило і львів’янин Віталій Вергелес здобули срібло в категорії С-4 на дистанції 1000 м в перший день змагань, а Д. Камерилов і В. Вергелес здобули бронзу в категорії C-2 на дистанції 500 м у заключний день змагань. Вітаємо всіх українських спортсменів - зокрема, земляка Віталія Вергелеса!

The Lviv-based EF-2007 NGO, together with its many partners, held the EuroFanz international fan festival for football supporters from different European countries in the Western Ukrainian capital from July 7-10. The 10th jubilee of this international tournament was won by the Ukrainian national fans team! The yellow-and-blues fans fought off a valiant Dinamo Minsk fans team from Belarus to claim their first-ever title with a 3:0 score. Symbolically, the game was played at Lviv’s Ukraina Stadium – perhaps this also played a role? Fans of Lviv’s Karpaty and fans of Slovenia were awarded with the bronze medals. Other awards went to:

Футбольні фани з усієї Європи з’їхались до Львова 7–10 липня на свій 10-й, ювілейний турнір, який раніше називався "Єврофан", але з 2016 року змінив свою назву на "EUROFANZ". Переможцями турніру "EUROFANZ 2016" стала команда фанатів національної збірної України. Їх супротивники у фінальному матчі, фани "Динамо" Мінськ боролися до останнього, але жовто-блакитним в кінці матчу вдалося забити три голи у ворота білорусів і, таким чином, стати чемпіонами турніру "EUROFANZ" вперше. Символічно, що назва легендарного стадіону, де проходили фінальні матчі турніру, також "Україна". Команди фанатів "Карпат" і національної збірної Словенії отримали бронзові медалі.

EURO 2016: Ukraine Falls Flat, Fans Kick Back

The Ukrainian national football team fell flat in a disappointing display at the EURO 2016 football tournament in France last month. The disastrous foray, didn’t do much to hamper the spirits of the incredible Ukrainian fans that made the journey west. Thousands of fans dressed in Cossack outfits and vyshyvankas, wearing floral headdresses or with their faces painted, and draped in the familiar blue-andyellow of the Ukrainian flag made the trek to the French cities of Lille, Lyon, and Marseille to watch the team in action. Some fans, such as British-Ukrainian supporter group known as ‘The Donetsk Way’, took it one step further. The group travelled over 200 km from London to Lille by bicycle to raise funds for those affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

They managed to raise nearly £4000 – over 250% of their goal! (To donate, please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Ridefor-Ukraine1) Other fans were sure to catch the sights, with many making a stopover in Paris along the way. But the best fans were at the stadium, tickets in hand, and singing patriotic Ukrainian songs despite the team’s poor performances.

ЄВРО-2016: Збірна програє, вболівальники – виграють

Національна футбольна команда України не досягла успіхів у турнірі ЄВРО-2016 у Франції минулого місяця. Наші програли всі три матчі. Але все це не зламало бойовий дух неймовірних українських уболівальників, які доклали багато зусиль, щоб потрапити на чемпіонат. Тисячі вболівальників, одягнених в козацькі костюми й вишиванки, з віночками на головах, з обличчями, розмальованими синьою та жовтою фарбами, загорнуті в українські прапори, виїжджали до французьких міст Лілль, Ліон і Марсель, щоб подивитися гру улюбленої команди. Деякі вболівальники, як от учасники англо-української групи підтримки під назвою "Донецький шлях", пішли у своєму ентузіазмі ще далі. Група проїхала понад 200 км від Лондона до Лілля на велосипедах, щоб зібрати кошти для людей, які постраждали від війни, що триває в Україні. Їм вдалося зібрати майже 4000 фунтів стерлінгів – у 2,5 рази більше, ніж сподівались (хто бажає долучитись, відвідайте: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Ridefor-Ukraine1). Інші вболівальники вирішили запастись враженнями від континенту і зробили зупинку в Парижі. Але справжні українські вболівальники були на стадіоні й не шкодуючи власного горла співали патріотичні українські пісні, щоб хоч якось загладити враження від виступу команди.
