If I Had A Million Dollars…

I’d Be a Ukrainian Government Official

I

f you live in Ukraine, I’m sure you heard of the recent E-declaration that Ukrainian officials were required to fill out in order for Ukraine to secure a $1 billion loan from the IMF. You might have heard that the average worth of a Deputy in the Verkhovna Rada is over $1.3 million USD. You might also have heard that the average Ukrainian barely makes $2,000/year while a soldier fighting on the front lines in Eastern Ukraine makes just $276/month. You may even have heard that 24 members of the Ukrainian cabinet declared a total of $7 million USD – in cash alone!

That Ukrainian officials possess this kind of wealth is hardly news to Ukrainians, but some of the things they have decided to spend their wealth on is. I am reminded of the popular Canadian folk song “If I had $1000000”, which sings about what a man would buy to win the affections of his partner. It is popular in Canada precisely because many of the objects desired are very “Canadian”, such as bacon and Kraft Dinner. You’d be hard-pressed to find a Ukrainian that would identify with what their own officials declared during the process…

“If I had $1000000, I’d Buy You a House” The very first line of the song croons “If I had $1000000, I’d buy you a house”. Rather than being a suggestion, it seems that Ukrainian public servants have taken this line as directions. And it seems that in the case of lodgings for Ukrainian officials – size does matter! For example, just look at Opposition Bloc MP Serhiy Sazhko, who in 2014 declared 17,414 Sq m of lodging – that’s half the size of Forum Lviv! Poroshenko Bloc MP Hennadiy Chekita has a lodging with a 450 Sq m basement or, as Channel 24 puts it, “probably the largest basement in Ukraine”. For others, it was the amount that matters. Just look at Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who was one of many that declared more than one dwelling (and over 100 companies). Still others had vast cottages (former Party of Regions MP Artem Shcherban’s 2013 cottage was 5,138 Sq m) or buildings (Renaissance Party MP Leonid Klimov declared 268,775 Sq m worth in 2014) to declare. But just as the song sings about other interesting dwellings like a “tree-fort”, Ukrainian officials didn’t disappoint with their creativity either. Perhaps the most interesting was Poroshenko Bloc’s Anatoliy Matviyenko, who declared his own personal 40 Sq m church.

“If I had $1000000, I’d Buy You Some Art” Later in the song, the lyric “If I had $1000000, I’d buy you some art” appears. This is followed by the line “A Picasso or a Garfunkel”. Again, Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov seems to have taken this line literally as he declared, among other things (including a 786-bottle collection of vintage wines) a Picasso. Art, in fact, was a common way for Ukrainian officials to spend their fortunes. Some preferred books, such as Opposition Bloc’s Mykhailo Dobkin (antique version of Anna Karenina worth $5,500), Radical Party’s Oksana Korchinksa (1840 version of Shevcheko’s Kobzar worth $7,820), and Poroshenko Bloc’s Ihor Hryniv (originals of the 1574 Apostol and 1581

Ostroh Bible, the first book and Bible to be printed in Ukraine). Others preferred something a little more ostentatious. Like Renaissance Party MP Hennadiy Bobov, who declared a Faberge egg – like some Soviet villain out of a James Bond flik (Octopussy)! Still others had more peculiar tastes, such as People’s Will MP Oleksandr Feldman’s collection of ritual masks. Clothing also features in the song “I’d buy you a fur coat”. Avakov again takes this literally, as his wife has four. But unlike the Canadian lyrics which sing “But not a real fur coat – that’s cruel!”, due to their value – Avakov’s appear to be genuine. Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodomyr Groysman also dabbles in rich tastes, as he declared a collection of 12 luxury watches (including 2 Rolexes). But maybe nobody takes clothing more seriously than People’s Front MP Ihor Kotvitskyy, who spent nearly $25,000 (including $5,000 on a Loro Piana coat) on the stuff just last year!

“If I had $1000000, I’d buy John Merrick’s Remains” If it doesn’t seem clear by now that many Ukrainian officials used the song as inspiration for their purchases, I give you Exhibit C: “If I had $1000000, I’d buy John Merrick’s remains”. This is a reference to lavish and bizarre purchases of the late pop superstar Michael Jackson, who did in fact buy the remains of the “Elephant Man” (Joseph Merrick). When it comes to lavish and bizarre, Jackson would have some competition with this current crop of Ukrainian officials. Take for example Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov, who purchased a $54,000 USD ride on a future Virgin Galactic flight to space, Radical Party Leader Oleg Lyashko, who declared a “peasant’s pitchfork” (the symbol of his party), or Opposition Bloc-aligned MP Dmytro Shentsev, who declared 170 separate samovars. The Radical Party’s Andrey Lozovoy has a thing for religious relics – his vast collection includes a 16th Century icon painting and a 13th Century encolpion cross with Holy relics. Some took the process in jest; Independent MP Volodymyr Parasyuk claimed his Samsung Gear S2 watch was a “gift from St. Nicholas”, while Radical Party MP and former Aydar Battalion commander Serhiy Melnychuk declared “a trillion hryvnias”. But the cash declared was no joke, especially the amount Ukrainian officials keep stashed at home – including those in the banking industry! Head of the State Fiscal Service Roman Nasirov has $2 million sitting at home while the Deputy Head of the National Bank Kateryna Rozhkova and Ukrainian Minister of Finance have 98% and 99% of their funds outside their own banking system!

So whatever you think your Ukrainian officials should be spending their money on (such as army wages, for example), there is one thing we can all agree on – and the final lyrics of the song agree:

“If I had $1000000, I’d be rich”.

NINO KATAMADZE & INSIGHT November 21st at 19:00, the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Georgian jazz artist Nino Katamadze and the Insight band will bring their incredible talents to Lviv’s lovely Opera & Ballet Theatre with a special concert to promote her new ‘Yellow’ album on November 21st. Katamadze began her career in 2000 alongside Insight founder Gocha Kacheishvili and has won a host of awards since, including Best Vocalist (2002 & 2003), Best Original Music (2002), Show Business Person of the Year (2003), and Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Georgian Music (2004). STARS OF ARGENTINIAN TANGO December 4th 19:00 at the Maria Zankovetska Ukrainian National Drama Theatre (1 L. Ukrainky St.) Lviv’s lovely Maria Zankovetska Ukrainian National Drama Theatre is pleased to host the Stars of Argentinian Tango for a concert in the Western Ukrainian capital on December 4th. Leopolitan fans of the world’s most sultry and sassy dance style and guests of the city will be delighted by the wonderful choreography of Neri Piliu and Yanina Quinones and the beautiful compositions of the famed Italian tango orchestra Tango Spleen Orquesta. Renowned worldwide, Neri and Yanina won the pre-mundial scenario tango and tango salon in 2006 and 2007 and placed second in the 2008 Buenos Aires mundial. The 16th annual British Film Festival will satisfy even the most demanding British cinema critics with its selection of recent British film hits appearing in the Western Ukrainian capital from November 24–28. Lviv’s Picasso nightclub is proud to host former Lyapis Trubetskoy and current Brutto frontman Siarhei Mikhalok on November 12th. His Lyapis 98 concert will celebrate “The best hits of [the past] 25 years” and will feature reggae, rock, gypsy, and music performed by the pioneers of “radical chanson”. Mikhalok is primarily known for his work with Lyapis Trubestskoy – perhaps the most popular group in modern Belarussian history. The group was especially popular in Ukraine, as they performed at the EuroMaidan and their hit Voiny Svetu is recognised as the unofficial anthem of the revolution. In fact, this support led to the singer facing problems in Russia, where he was accused of supporting nationalists. Alongside producer Anton Azizbekyan, Mikhalok applied for (and received), permanent residence in Ukraine in 2015. Before founding his current punk rock group Brutto in September 2014, Mikhalok announced that Lyapis Trubetskoy would be calling it quits and they gave an emotional farewell concert at Kyiv’s Dynamo Stadium in August 2014 – right next to spot of one of the biggest standoffs of the EuroMaidan. Lviv’s hopping Picasso Club is pleased to present popular DJ Sonya Sotnik for a special concert program with the GurtYoGhurt band on November 18th. Born and raised in the Western Ukrainian capital, Sotnik spent over a decade as a radio presenter, station manager, and even couch host of Internews-Ukraine before venturing into DJ work. She developed a following while working at Music Radio and became a hit after winning the title of “Best Morning Show Ever!” while working with Sergiy Kuzin on the ‘Come Together’ show on Radio ROKS. She took over as Director at the Dacha radio network and soon began her solo DJ career. She released her debut album ‘God Save the Queen’ in 2014 and performed over 50 shows alongside Kuzin for soldiers in the ATO zone. Her concerts are known as much for their unique mix of singing, poetry, and memorable improvisations as they are for their intriguing costuming. Tickets for the show cost between 150-250 UAH. ЛЯПІС 98 І СЯРҐЄЙ МІХАЛОК 12 листопада о 19:00 в клубі "Пікассо" (вул. Зелена, 88) У популярному львівському нічному клубі "Пікассо" 12 листопада виступить колишній фронтмен гурту "Ляпис Трубецкой" і теперішній фронтмен гурту "Брутто" Сярґєй Міхалок. У концерті під назвою "Ляпіс 98" прозвучать найкращі хіти минулих 25 років у різних стилях – реггі, рок, циганському а також музика, яку виконували піонери "радикального шансону". Міхалок в першу чергу відомий своєю роботою з гуртом "Ляпис Трубецкой" – мабуть, найпопулярнішим колективом в сучасній білоруській історії. Група була особливо популярна в Україні, вони виступали на Євромайдані, а їх хіт "Воины свету" був визнаний неофіційним гімном революції. Через цю підтримку музикантами революції гідності вони стикаються з проблемами в Росії, де він їх звинуватили в підтримці націоналістів. Разом з продюсером Антоном Азізбекяном Міхалок попросив (і отримав) постійне місце проживання в Україні 2015 року. Перед тим, як заснувати свою нинішню панк-рок групу "Брутто" у вересні 2014 р. Міхалок повідомив, що "Ляпис Трубецкой" завершує своє існування, і вони дали емоційний прощальний концерт на стадіоні київського "Динамо" в серпні 2014 року – саме там, де розгортались найгарячіші події Євромайдану. CANDLE FESTIVAL TO LIGHT UP LVIV November 11–13, 1 Muzeina Square During November 11–13 Lviv’s Candles Festival will be back for the third time and is expected to draw many visitors due to its interesting and attractive program. SUMO – LVIV OPEN CUP November 19th, 12:00 at the Halychyna Sport Complex (8 Kerchenska St.) Lviv’s first, largest, and surely heaviest sumo tournament will storm into the Halychyna Sport Complex on Saturday, November 19th as nearly eight tons of sumo wrestlers begin preliminary matches from noon. Sumo is a full-contact, competitive wrestling sport where a wrestler attempts to force another wrestler from a circular ring or into touching the ground with anything other than the soles of their feet. The sport has its origins in Japan, where it continues to be the only country where it is practiced professionally. The Hardkiss is known as one of Ukraine’s top acts, having won 5 national Yuna Awards

(including for Best Album, Best Song, and Best Video), for being nominated for Best Ukrainian Artist at the 2012 MTV Europe Awards, and for finishing as runner-up at last year’s national Eurovision song contest with their hit ‘Helpless’. More than that, Sanina was named one of the 30 Most Successful Ukrainians Under 30 by Ukrainian Forbes. In honour of their 5th anniversary, the group will travel

This will not be your first time performing in Lviv. Has The Hardkiss already conquered the hearts of Leopolitan music fans?

You always choose outfits by Ukrainian designers for your concerts and as far as we know you do that out of principle. Have your stylists ever considered cooperation with Lviv’s designers? What should young and upcoming designers need to do to be able to work with The Hardkiss?

Lviv is one of our favourite cities. Maybe you don’t know our funny story already… So, it was just a few days before approving the schedule of our Perfection Tour when the Lviv concert hall we had planned to perform in was closed. We ended up giving the date in Lviv to Ternopil and then received a tonne of messages from our fans and friends. That is why we decided to present the tour’s final concert here in Lviv – at the Sports Palace. So it will be our first concert at the Lviv Sport Palace. If that doesn’t confirm our great relationship with the city, I don’t know what would!

All of your song lyrics are in English.

Does that mean you are more oriented to the Western market? Do you get a lot of criticism for not singing in Ukrainian?

I’ve answered this question many times. We are not oriented anywhere in particular – we just do what we like and play good music. We are happy that our music is loved and gets a lot of support in our native country. The fact is that I find it easier to write songs and sing in English. But mostly, it is more a question of inspiration. At the end of October, we presented our first Ukrainian-language song, “Antarctica”, and our Lviv audience will hear it on December 9th.

One should make progressive, interesting, and most importantly, comfortable outfits. We truly enjoy complementing our music with outfits made

by Ukrainian designers. We work actively with such well-known brands as Frolov, Przhonskaya, Elena Burenina, Monstra, Bobkova, and others. In Ukraine, everything seems to be doing well not only in music, but in other fields of culture as well!

Lviv is often used as a film set for the shooting of artistic movies, TV shows, and advertisements. Have you ever thought of shooting a The Hardkiss video here in Lviv?

We have already started working on our new video, some of which will be made during the concert here in December. You’ll know more details a little later on – right now it’s a secret.

In your youth, you graduated from a jazz school and were even a jazz vocalist.

For the present time, I don’t have any time for solo projects or programs – there is a lot of work to do with the band! For my solo ambitions, I work with the X-Factor show, which takes up a significant part of my time.

What did you take from the experience of participating in the national competition for the Eurovision contest?

Will you try again?

We’ll see. For this year, we have other plans. Participation last year introduced us to a brand new audience. For our 5th anniversary, we gathered two huge crowds in Kyiv – over 10,000 fans came out to congratulate us! The majority of the concerts on our Perfection Tour are sold out. The audience is the biggest and dearest award for any artist.

In October you celebrated the band’s 5th anniversary. What are the key events over this period?

The launch of a new video or song and each concert is a great moment for us. All of our key points are connected more or less with our creative work.

ON The Hardkiss вже не перший раз у Львові з концертами. Як Ви думаєте, Ви вже завоювали львів'ян? Львів це одне з наших найулюбленіших міст. Ви ж знаєте нашу історію?! За кілька днів до оголошення графіка Perfection Tour у Львові закрили концерт-хол, в якому повинен був проходити концерт. Ви завжди виступаєте в костюмах від українських дизайнерів. Наскільки ми знаємо, це принципово. Чи не планували Ваші стилісти «спробувати» когось із львівських дизайнерів? І що потрібно молодому дизайнеру-початківцю, що б з ним захотіли співпрацювати The Hardkiss? Потрібно створювати прогресивні, цікаві і, головне, зручні речі. Нам цікаво і приємно ілюструвати свою музику речами українських дизайнерів. Ми активно співпрацюємо з такими брендами, як Frolov, Przhonskaya, Elena Burenina, Monstra, Bobkova та ін. В Україні все прекрасно не лише з музикою, а й в інших культурних сферах. Львів досить часто виступає в якості майданчика для зйомок художніх фільмів, серіалів, рекламних роликів, чи не виникало у Вас ідеї зняти один з кліпів The Hardkiss у Львові? Ми вже почали роботу над нашим новим відео, частина якого буде знята на концерті в грудні. Всі подробиці – пізніше. Це поки секрет. У дитинстві Ви закінчили джазову школу і співали в джазовому біг-бенді, наскільки ймовірним є те, що львів'яни, які обожнюють джаз, зможуть почути Юлію Саніну на одному з джазових фестивалів? Наприклад, Alfa Jazz Fest? У мене зараз немає часу на сольні проекти і програми – вистачає роботи в групі. “Сольно” я зараз себе реалізую в шоу “Х-фактор”, яке займає у мене чимало часу.

Основний висновок, який зробила група після участі у відбірковому турі Євробачення? Ще раз не будете пробувати? Поживемо – побачимо. У цьому році у нас зовсім інші плани. Участь у минулому національному відборі дала нашій команді нову аудиторію. На своє п'ятиріччя ми зібрали дві Stereo Plaza в Києві – привітати нас прийшло близько 10 000 чоловік. На більшу частину нашого Perfection Tour усі квитки розпродані. Глядач і слухач – головна нагорода для будь-якого артиста. У жовтні ви відзначили п'ятиріччя групи. Які події можете назвати ключовими? Вихід треку або відео, кожен концерт – це для нас подія. Всі наші інфоприводи пов'язані з творчістю, і кожен з них є для нас ключовим. Що в найближчих планах у групи The Hardkiss? Куди і на що зараз спрямовані творчі прагнення вашої команди? Творчість – вона циклічна. Нові треки, нові кліпи, нові території. А ще я хочу знятися в якомусь гарному кіно. Фентезі! Нехай навесні ця моя мрія вже нарешті здійсниться.

SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC FORUM “LVIV REGION – FACTORY OF EUROPE” Lviv played host to the “Lviv Region – Factory of Europe” international economic forum from November 3-4. The two-day event drew over 700 entrepreneurs, foreign investors, and diplomats, as well as representatives from business associations, banks, and international foundations.

Among the notable people in attendance included: Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Stepan Kubiy, Minister of Infrastructure Vladimir Omelian, and Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi. The forum featured 9 panels and nearly 20 leading experts and practitioners from both the public and private sectors. The first day saw participants discuss the economic and geographical advantages of Ukraine that contribute to a positive image of the country, as well as topics such as attracting investments, opening industrial parks, and effective personnel management. The second day’s programme was divided into 3 areas: agro-industrial development, energy conservation, and trans-boundary cooperation.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko also took in part of the economic forum during a working trip to the Lviv region on November 3rd. He emphasised that investment forums were being held and thousands of new jobs were being created all over Ukraine in 2016. At the same time, he noted that Galicia was always among the leaders in Ukraine in terms of foreign investments. “Today is the right time and place to invest in Ukraine” he said as he summed up his speech to participants. The President also took part of the opening ceremony of the Bader Ukraine plant as part of his trip. He called the opening a “striking example of [the] revival of Ukraine”. Later he visited the Kolodnytsya gas field in the Stryi District of the Lviv Region to participate in the launching of a gas production plant. The Ukrainian Head of State emphasised that energy independence and the work of power engineers is as important as the “courage of Ukrainian men on the front line and [the] work of Ukrainian diplomats on the formation of a pro-Ukrainian global coalition.”

Президент України Петро Порошенко також взяв участь в економічному форумі в ході робочої поїздки до Львівської області 3 листопада. Він підкреслив, що завдяки таким інвестиційним форумам були створені тисячі нових робочих місць по всій Україні в 2016 році. В той же час він зазначив, що Галичина завжди була одним з лідерів в Україні за обсягом іноземних інвестицій. «Сьогодні дуже вдалий час і місце, щоб вкладати гроші в Україну", сказав він, підводячи підсумок своїй промові до учасників. Глава Української держави наголосив, що енергетична незалежність і робота енергетиків настільки ж важлива, як і "мужність українських чоловіків на лінії фронту і робота українських дипломатів з формування проукраїнської глобальної коаліції».

LVIV HOSTS POLISH FILM FESTIVAL ДНІ ПОЛЬСЬКОГО КІНО Leopolitan cinema lovers and guests of the city were thrilled last month when the Under the High Castle modern Polish film festival rolled through the city from October 7-16. Organised by the General Consulate of Poland alongside the Polish Institute of Cinematic Art, the festival featured over 20 film screenings, as well as several other cinemathemed events, including discussion panels, exhibitions, concerts, and even a quest. Festivalgoers even had the opportunity to meet with leading Polish actor Marian Dziedziel and director/screenwriter Waldemar Krzystek – best known to Leopolitans for his cold war romance Little Moscow (Mala Moskwa), which won him a Golden Lion at the 33rd annual Polish Film Festival. Among the more popular screenings during the festival were Filmowy Lwow Prasowy, which looks at Lviv-based newspaper reviews of Polish films from 1896-1939, and Co Pisze Gabriela, an entertaining picture on Polish playwright, novelist, and actress Gabriela Zapolska. Other popular screenings included the retrospective of Krzysztof Kieslowski, the award-winning and highly-respected Polish art house director and screenwriter best known for his films Dekalog, The Double Life of Veronique, and the Three Colours trilogy.

У жовтні, а саме 7-16 числа любителі кіно і гості міста могли відвідати покази фестивалю сучасного польського кінематографу "Під Високим замком". Протягом організованого генеральним консульством Польщі разом з Польським інститутом кіномистецтва фестивалю було представлено понад 20 стрічок, а також кілька інших супутніх заходів, серед яких були, зокрема, дискусії, виставки, концерти, і навіть гра-квест. В рамках фестивалю гості мали нагоду зустрітися з провідним польським актором Мар’яном Дзєдзєлем та режисером і сценаристом Вальдемаром Кшистеком – відомим львів’янам своєю мелодрамою про часи холодної війни "Мала Москва", яка принесла йому Нагороду "Золотий лев" на 33 щорічному фестивалі польського кіно. Серед найбільш популярних заходів фестивалю була, мабуть, виставка Filmowy Lwow Prasowy, експонатами якої були львівські газети з описами польських фільмів періоду 1896-1939 років, а також розважальний фільм "Що пише Габріеля" (Co pisze Gabriela) про польського драматурга, романіста і актрису Габріелю Запольську. ANDREY KURKOV PRESENTS NEWEST BOOK IN LVIV Lviv’s famed Virmenka coffeehouse (19 Virmenska St.) played host to bestselling author Andrey Kurkov on October 21st, when he stopped by to present his latest novel – Schengen History, Lithuanian Novel – to Leopolitans.

The 700-page tome – published in the Russian language – will be available for purchase beginning in November, while the Ukrainian translation will be released in Spring 2017. The meeting at Virmenska was followed by a booksigning and concert by saxophonist Yuriy Mashtalir. Kurkov’s presentation was just the latest in the continuing series of literary and musical events at Virmenska dedicated to remarkable events and world-famous personalities.

Kurkov is a well-known Russian-language author, having written several screenplays, novels, and children’s books. Raised since early childhood in Kyiv, he is one of the best-known writers in Europe and one of Ukraine’s most successful. His satirical novels are filled with dark humour reflecting the wild times of a 90s-era Ukraine in transition. His works often present a pathetic character, thrusted from a dead-end and mundane lifestyle into a tumultuous adventure involving shady characters from a chaotic and crimefilled background. Kurkov’s works are known for their penetrating look into Ukrainian society and for his treatment of serious present-day subjects.

Зустріч у "Вірменці" супроводжувала автограф-сесія і виступ саксофоніста Юрія Машталіра. Ця презентація Куркова – лише одна із серії літературних і музичних подій, що відбуваються у стінах "Вірменки" та присвячені різним світовим подіям та відомим особистостям. Курков – добре відомий російськомовний автор, написав кілька сценаріїв, романів і дитячих книг. Народився і виріс у Києві, він є одним із найвідоміших письменників у Європі та одним з найуспішніших в Україні. Його сатиричні романи наповнені чорним гумором, відображають дикі часи 90-х в Україні. Його героєм часто може бути якийсь нещасний, якого витягло з глухого кута і нудного щоденного життя та кинуло у бурхливі пригоди за участю тіньових персонажів з не менш темним минулим. CHEESE & WINE FESTIVAL One of Lviv’s most-anticipated culinary events on the calendar took place from October 21–23 as Lviv hosted its annual Cheese & Wine Festival. Leopolitan cheese-lovers and guests of the city had over 200 cheeses to choose from, provided from over 30 companies and local artisan cheesemongers. Thirsty visitors had a bevy of beverages available, including reds, whites, and a hearty selection of homemade spirits. To compliment these treats, a selection of artisan chutneys, breads, and cheesecakes were also on location. One of the most popular events was the pressing of over 1 tonne of grapes (with specially-provided rubber boots). The juice from the press will be turned into wine for next year’s celebration! In addition to the delicious tastings, the event also featured musical concerts and fun games for the kids. Organisers hope to teach festivalgoers about cheese-making culture and wine-making traditions.

СВЯТО СИРУ І ВИНА Одна з найбільш очікуваних гурманами кулінарних подій у Львові проходила 21-23 жовтня під назвою "Свято сиру і вина". Місцеві любителі сиру і гості міста могли скуштувати понад 200 ґатунків цього чудового продукту, виготовленого майже 30 великими й малими сироварнями. До сиру був широкий вибір червоного та білого вина, а також міцніших напоїв домашнього приготування. Найбільше людей, мабуть, зібралось довкола величезної діжі, у якій вичавлювали ногами (у спеціально передбачених гумових чоботях) близько тонни винограду. З усього того соку мають приготувати вино для святкування наступного року! Крім смачних дегустацій, на фестивалі відбувались виступи музикантів, співаків і танцюристів, а також веселі ігри для дітей. Метою цього щорічного фестивалю є ознайомлення гостей з традиціями і культурою виробництва й споживання вина й сиру.

GRAND PRIX LVIV HALF MARATHON 2016 Lviv was host to the wonderful Grand Prix Lviv Half Marathon 2016 sports event on November 6th, sponsored by Molokija. The event was festively kicked off by Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, who greeted the over 1300 runners, including many celebrities. Among the notable athletes involved were Maryna Filatova (spouse of Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov), MP Yehor Soboliev, 1+1 TV personality Marychka Padalko, and players from Lviv’s favourite football team – FC Karpaty. The Grand Prix Lviv Half Marathon 2016 was the final stage of the Run Ukraine Running League and featured 3 different categories: the 10km Molokija Healthy Run, the 5km Grand Prix Lviv Run, and the 2km Grand Prix Lviv Run. Additionally, children had the opportunity to run in the 1000m McDonald’s junior run, the 500m McDonald’s kid’s run, and the 100m McDonald’s baby run. The event featured over 60,000 UAH in prizes, including 5,000 UAH for the winners of the Half Marathon categories and – as in all Run Ukraine events – prizes for the top 3 athletes in seven different age categories. Each runner that completed the 21.0975 km distance received a memorable medal.

ПІВМАРАФОН GRAND PRIX LVIV 2016 У неділю, 6 листопада у Львові відбувся масштабний міжнародний півмарафон GRAND PRIX LVIV HALF MARATHON 2016, генеральний спонсором якого виступила – ТМ “Молокія”. Урочистий старт змаганням дав міський голова Львова Андрій Садовий, який привітав понад 1300 бігунів з різних міст України та інших країн. Серед учасників події були також і віп-гості – Марина Філатова, дружина мера Дніпра, Єгор Соболєв, народний депутат України, Марічка Падалко, телеведуча 1+1, гравці ФК "Карпати". Півмарафон був завершальним етапом бігової ліги Run Ukraine Running League 2016, та складався з таких

дистанцій: Молокія Healthy Run – 10 км, Grand Prix Lviv RUN – 5 км та Grand Prix Lviv RUN – 2 км. Участь у заході взяли також діти у дитячих дистанціях: McDonald’s junior run 1000 м, McDonald’s kid’s run 500 м та McDonald’s baby run 100 м. Загальний призовий фонд змагання склав майже 60 000 грн. Переможці в абсолюті на півмарафонській дистанції отримали по 5 000 грн. Традиційно для заходів Run Ukraine грошові призи отримали і перші три атлети на півмарафонській дистанції у семи вікових категоріях. Кожен фінішер дистанції 21,0975 км отримав пам’ятну медаль на фініші.

LVIV FASHION WEEK – SPRING/SUMMER 2017 The always dazzling and glamorous Lviv Fashion Week returned to showcase the elegant outfits of the Spring / Summer 2017 collection from Oct. 26th-30that the Lviv Airport and other locations across the city. The event featured many of Ukraine’s top fashion designers, such as Odesa’s Sofitie, Mykolaiv’s GraNat by Natalia Grechana, Lutsk’s Ivanna Yukhymchuk, and Lviv’s-own Kateryna Karol. Special guests of the event included designers Fedir Vozianov (Vozianov) and Serge Smolin (IDoL), while the highlight of the event was surely the creative show by famed Italian brand Balossa. Leopolitan fashionistas and guests

of the city that visited the showroom at the airport were also able to purchase clothes, bags, shoes, and accessories from over 30 popular designers. The festival featured several other events in addition to the enchanting catwalk presentations, including the debut of Lesia Semi’s new REVIVAL perfume, Zhukova’s debut jewellery collection, and the “Ukrainian Fashion Since Independence: Main Myths of the Epoch” lecture by fashion critic Zoya Zvynyatskivska. In addition to the return of the popular OFF Schedule project that features fashion shows and presentations by emerging Ukrainian brands and designers, LFW introduced a new event – Brand Factory – that was packed full of fashion battles, a fashion school, and even pop-up stores featuring clothes, shoes, and accessories by Ukrainian brands. Roksolana Bogutska’s popular charity show took place outside of the main schedule this year, at the Mirotel Resort & Spa in Truskavets on Nov. 5th.

NEW FASHION NAME Among the most interesting collections of the Spring / Summer 2017 Lviv Fashion Week was the one from Pavlo Milcharek – the well-known owner of the Galychanka Galician outfits factory. The line features a new Ukrainian brand of outfits for both men and women, as well as a full range of accessories, including creative shirts, sundresses, shorts, pants, trench coats, and sleeveless longer outer jackets.

He used materials such as linen, jersey, and leather to create the unique collection, added by embroidery adorned shoes and transforming bags. Milcharek successfully combines a minimalistic approach and Japanese nuances with his trademark Ukrainian ethnic motifs – so recognisable in his Galychanka brand. But his new collection features only a hint of national motif as he displays his theme tastefully and delicately. Simply, his collection is modern, comfortable, and wearable. Fashionistas looking for a spectacular image that is both comfortable and stylish are strongly recommended to keep an eye on the Pavlo Milcharek brand.

Pavlo Milcharek – український бренд жіночого та чоловічого одягу, а також аксесуарів, що успішно дебютував з повним асортиментом: тут були і сорочки, і сарафани, штани та шорти, тренчі і видовжені жакети без рукавів. Trattoria Tartufo – Tasty and Stylish!

T

oday’s restaurant interior has practically become synonymous with the brand itself and is an integral part of any culinary experience. That’s why we wanted to let Lviv Today readers know about the prestigious Restaurant & Bar Design Awards – the only international award that features a contest for designers that create interesting and impressive interior concepts in restaurants and pubs around the world, from revered Michelin-starred establishments to the fleeting dynamism of pop-ups.

With over 5000 entries from the UK and 70 other countries in the past seven years, the Awards attract the world’s top designers, hospitality operators and experts of restaurant business. It’s considered prestigious to be even shortlisted for the award, and that’s why we’re proud to announce that Ukraine’s only representative among 217 worldwide projects is Lviv’s-own Trattoria Tartufo!

You might already know that Tartufo offers authentic Italian cuisine by chief cook Davide Lagomarsino on the 3rd floor of Forum Lviv. But did you know about our interior? Designers of Volodymyr Nepiyvoda’s YOD design studio decided to play with the classical stereotype of Lviv and left only those materials that represent the essence of the city: brass, white marble, and oak. The restaurant is divided into three parts: the main hall, a lobby zone with fast food courts, and the summer terrace that offers a spectacular view over the rooftops of Lviv’s city centre.

The focal point of the restaurant and centre of the interior design is the stone oven used for baking delicious pizzas.

These ovens are made of tufa limestone, specially brought over from the base of Mount Vesuvius, and are individually handcrafted according to ancient Neopolitan techniques. This allows the oven to create the optimal 400˚С temperature that is ideal for preserving all the richness and juiciness of the fresh

ingredients on Tartufo’s incredible pizzas. Tartufo’s interior features light colours, creating a light and airy feel. To intensify visual accents, unique decorative accessories and lamps were custom-crafted. Shades that resemble spaghetti twisted around forks were based on sketches by designer Andriy Galushko and placed over the original chandeliers.

The chandeliers themselves are contrasted by the rugged concrete lamps created by Kateryna Sokolova. Made from round wooden bars, the restaurant’s logo decorates one venue wall in a catchy and curious way. Another great idea is found at the restaurant’s entrance, where designers placed hand-wash stations that resemble small silos – but when you start to wash your hands, water comes from the taps instead of grain! By introducing all the colours, materials, and ideas chosen by the designers, we were able to create the atmosphere of a classical Italian trattoria.

Tartufo is a stylish and cosy place with exceedingly tasty cuisine. The restaurant also features an Italian goods shop that sells products such as delightful tartufo mushrooms (truffles) and – fortunately for our dessert-lovers – is conveniently-located next to the JUST Confiserie at TM Forum Lviv (7B, Pid Dubom Str.).

міжнародна премія, яку щорічно виборюють автори самих цікавих й яскравих інтер’єрних концепцій ресторанів і барів по цілому світу – від вишуканих закладів з мішленовською зіркою до перспективно динамічних закусочних. За останні сім років понад 5000 номінантів з Великобританії та 70 країн світу прийняли участь в конкурсі, який приваблює найкращих світових дизайнерів, представників індустрії гостинності та знавців ресторанного бізнесу. Уже сам факт участі піднімає престиж, як авторів проекту, так і ресторанної культури цілої країни. Перелік фіналістів преміїї цього року налічував 217 проектів архітекторів і дизайнерів, що були представлені в 11 підрозділах. І ми тішимось, що власне цього року на Restaurant & Bar Design Awards номінувався наш львівський ресторан – траторія Tartufo – єдиний представник з України! Усім відомо, що Tartufo частує справжньою італійською кухнею від шеф-кухаря Davide Lagomarsino на третьому поверсі ТЦ Forum Lviv. Власне її місцезнаходження й вплинуло на концепцію дизайну. Автори проекту – YOD design studio Володимира Непийводи – відійшли від класичного і стереотипного сприйняття Львова, залишивши лише ті матеріали, що тісно повязані з духом та настроєм міста: латунь, білий мармур і дуб. Простір ресторану розділений на три частини: головний зал, зона лобі на фуд-корті і простора літня тераса з виглядом на дахи старого міста. Головний акцент ресторану

й одночасно центр дизайнерської композиції — кам’яна пічка на дровах, в якій й випікають справжню італійську піцу. Це перша у Львові неаполітанська пічка для піци Stefano Ferrara. Її особливістю є те, що складена вона вручну із туфового каменю за старовинними неаполітанським технологіям. Камінь для їх виготовлення везуть з підніжжя Везувію. Ці печі здатні створювати оптимальну для випічки піци температуру 400˚С, щоб піца приготувалася, і при цьому збереглися смакові особливості, насиченість та соковитість інгредієнтів начинки. В оформленні Тартуффо використані світлі тони, тому інтер’єр повітряний та легкий. Щоб створити візуальні акценти для ресторану спеціально розробили предмети декору та світильники. Зі стелі звисають оригінальні люстри з абажурами у вигляді накручених на виделку спагетті. Вони виготовлені зі шпону дубу за ескізами дизайнера Андрія Галушки. Одночасно з ними контрастують масивні бетонні світильники, створені Катериною Соколовою. На одній зі стін головного залу розташований логотип ресторану, що складається з круглих деревяних брусків. Це дуже цікава і незвична ідея. При виконанні усіх своїх задумок дизайнери обрали такі кольори і матеріали, котрі б змогли передати атмосферу класичної італійської тратторії. Іще одна цікава ідея реалізована на вході. Тут дизайнери розмістили умивальники, що виглядають як ємкості для зберігання зерна, але коли починаєш мити руки – з крану тече вода, а не зерно. Загалом ресторан Тартуффо дуже стильний та затишний, всі страви надзвичайно смачні, тут же можна придбати італійські продукти на базі грибів тартуффо (трюфелів) і завітати у власну кондитерську JUST, що розташована поруч у ТЦ Forum Lviv (вул. Під Дубом, 7Б).

Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrive!!!

The grapes are harvested by hand and, like olive oil, Beaujolais nouveau wine goes by the principle “the younger, the better”.

Chopin Restaurant’s light and airy, Provence-styled interior is the perfect place to sample this delicious wine. Taihō Kōki Ukraine’s Greatest Sumo Champion How a Ukrainian Ended Up in Japan Ivan’s father, Markian Boryshko, was born in Ukraine at a time when it was a province in the Russian Empire. In the late 19thCentury, many Ukrainians ventured to the Russian Far East to explore and settle and that is how Boryshko arrived on the Island of Sakhalin in 1900. He became a well-established businessman, at least until his enterprise was destroyed during the Russian Revolution of 1917. It is believed that he joined the White Army and fought the Bolshevik authorities in the Russian Civil War. He ended up in the town of Shisuka (now Poronaysk) where he met his future wife Kiyo Naya in 1928. They lived happily there until 1945, when the Soviets took control of the area. Kiyo fled south to Japan with her four kids in tow, while Markian was forced to stay behind.

After emigrating, Ivan became seriously involved in sports. He took his mother’s last name and even a Japanese first name.

That’s how the career of Taihō Kōki began. He became famous as early as the mid-1950s and was one of the biggest names in the sport until the early 1970s. Kōki became a living legend in 1960, when he became champion of the Emperor’s Cup. He would repeat the achievement several times and become the most popular sumo wrestler of his time. Nobody in Japan, or even in the USSR, had any idea that they were looking a halfUkrainian whose mind-blowing talents took root from the simple countryside. Despite his outstanding achievements, he remained unknown in the Soviet Union, especially as the authorities were not keen on glorifying the child of a ‘White Russian’. Once the USSR collapsed, this view changed, as did attitudes towards this previously unknown sport.

The Champion & His Legacy

hen hearing the word ‘sumo’, the image of a huge man in conjured – as unbeatable as a block of ice.

And he must have Oriental origins. “So what does Ukrainian ‘salo’ have to do with that?” you might ask. Well, as it turns out, quite a lot! Did you know that Ukraine gave Japan one of its most powerful athletes of all time! Few people outside Japan know about sumo wrestling legend Taihō Kōki, who won 32 tournaments between 1960 and 1971 – a record that was unequalled until 2014. Fewer still

Standing at about 1.85m and weighing 100 kg at the start of his career, Taihō was a sprite of a sumo, relying more on skill and speed than size and weight to win matches. Later on he competed at 145 kg, a size that was considered at the time to be unremarkable, and now, in an era where sumo wrestlers reach over 230 kg, would be considered negligible. A ruggedly handsome man adorned by a generation of Japanese women and girls (as well as Emperor Hirohito), Taihō retired in 1971. Following his retirement, the wrestler took interest in his roots, visiting his father’s homeland for the first time in 2002. He got in touch with Ukrainian rikishi (sumo wrestlers) and even allowed them to name a Cup after him. He continued to stay in touch with his second motherland right until his death in early 2013. know that his real name was Ivan Boryshko and he could trace his roots to Ukraine. Taihō (Ivan) was the son of a Japanese mother and Ukrainian father and is often held up as an example of what a mixed race person can accomplish in a traditionally conservative country. His dominance was such that he won six tournaments in a row on two separate occasions. He is the only wrestler to win at least one championship every year while a pro and he won 45 straight matches in a stretch in 1968-69.

Two years before, Taihō was recognised with the Third Class Order of Merit by the Ukrainian government. He was also honoured with a monument in Odesa, a city which he had never visited, but from where his father set out for Sakhalin to begin a new life. While an amateur sumo federation has been established in Ukraine, none have yet managed to achieve any notable success in the professional sport. However, the emerging interest in sumo wrestling in modern Ukraine is surely the best way to honour Taihō.

ри слові "сумо" в уяві майже кожного постає образ велетня з дивною зачіскою та в досить екзотичному вбранні, який обов’язково живе у далекосхідній країні. "Але, що до цього всього має українське сало?" – запитаєте ви. Виявляється, багато чого, адже Україна дала Японії одного з найсильніших спортсменів всіх часів.

Мало хто за межами Японії знає, що їхня легенда сумо Тайхо Кокі (по нашому – Іван Боришко), який у 19601971 роках виграв імператорський кубок 32 рази (рекорд, який залишався неперевершеним до 2014 року), має своє коріння в Україні. Вперше взявши участь у змаганнях, коли йому виповнилось 16 років, він покинув татамі, коли йому був 51 рік. Він єдиний борець сумо, який вигравав хоча б один чемпіонат щороку в топ-дивізіоні, і до того ж він виграв 45 матчів поспіль. Тайхо (Іван), син матері-японки і батька-українця, вважається прекрасним прикладом того, чого людина не японського походження може досягти в такій традиційно консервативній країні, як Японія.

В Японії Іван, позбавлений батьківської опіки, почав серйозно займатись спортом і прийняв японське ім'я та прізвище своєї матері. Ось так розпочалась кар'єра багаторазового чемпіона (йокозуна) Тайхо Кокі. Вперше він став чемпіоном 1961 року, а найпочеснішу нагороду – імператорський кубок – здобув 1962 року. Він повторював свої досягнення кілька разів і став найпопулярнішим японським борцем сумо свого часу. Тоді ніхто ні в Японії, ні в СРСР не міг навіть здогадуватись, що чемпіон, який бачив своїх супротивників наскрізь, мав українське коріння. Незважаючи на його видатні спортивні досягнення він був невідомий в Радянському Союзі, тут не могли згадувати "сина білогвардійця".

Після розпаду СРСР ситуація змінилася. Змінились погляди на минуле країни, як і ставлення до раніше невідомих видів спорту.

Чемпіон та його спадщина Маючи зріст близько 185 см і вагу близько 100 кг на початку своєї кар'єри, Тайхо Кокі брав не стільки вагою, скільки технікою, яку він зберіг і розвинув пізніше, набравши вагу до 145 кг. Для порівняння – деякі борці сумо сьогодні мають вагу понад 230 кг! Тайхо обожнювали всі – чоловіки захоплювалися видовищними поєдинками, жінки – його незвичною зовнішністю, а діти вважали його взірцем для себе. Кажуть, що, імператор Японії Хірохіто теж був його прихильником. Тайхо вийшов у відставку в 1971 році та почав проявляти інтерес до свого коріння. Він вперше відвідав батьківщину свого батька у 2002 та цікавився подіями в країні до самої смерті у 2013 році. У 2011 року український уряд нагородив Тайхо Кокі орденом “За заслуги” III ступеня. Пізніше того ж року в Одесі був споруджений пам’ятник українсько-японському сумоїсту Тайхо Кокі, адже саме з цього міста його батько виїхав до Сахаліну. Сьогодні в Україні їснує любительська федерація сумо, хоча українським борцям ще не вдалось домогтися якихось помітних успіхів в професійному сумо. Розвиток інтересу до цього старовинного виду боротьби в сучасній Україні, безсумнівно, найкращий спосіб вшанувати Тайхо.

Handball: Baltic League in action Lviv’s Halychanka ladies handball team continues to be one of the strongest on the continent. The team travelled to Grodno, Belarus to take part in first round Baltic League action and handled all five rivals from Belarus and Lithuania. Lviv hosted second round action and the home side didn’t disappoint either, defeating four squads and drawing Minsk’s BNTU-Byelaz. After two rounds of Baltic League action, our Halychanka continue to lead the table. Lviv Today congratulates the ladies on their fantastic accomplishment!

Rugby: Ukraine’s Rugby 15 Championship On October 29th, in Ukraine’s Rugby 15 Championship, Lviv’s “Sokil” played against “Podillya” (Khmelnitsky). Whole match was extremely tense, with several real fights between players, however local sportsmen were defeated with score 10–34, making main coach Yuriy Hrabovskyi truly very unhappy as the team lost chance to win bronze medal. In the first home match Lviv’s team won over “Podillya” with the score 22– 18, however according to results of two matches as bronze medalists came team from Ternopil. Hope the nest season will be more successful for Lviv’s “Sokil”.

Львівський "Сокіл" запинився за крок від медалей. Регбісти львівського "Сокола" не змогли вибороти бронзові медалі чемпіонату України.У повторному матчі за третє місце команда Юрія Грабовського програла хмельницькому "Поділлю" з рахунком 10:34. Нагадаємо, у першому домашньому матчі львівський "Сокіл" мінімально переміг подолян – 22:18. За підсумками двох матчів бронзовими призерами чемпіонату України стали регбісти хмельницького "Поділля". Сподіваємось, що наступний сезон львівяни проведуть більш вдало.

Львівська "Галичанка" продовжує залишатися однією з найсильніших жіночих гандбольних команд континенту. Наші дівчата вирушили до Гродно, щоб взяти участь в першому раунді Балтійської ліги і перемогли всі п'ять команд-суперниць з Білорусі та Литви. Поєдинки другого раунду відбувались у Львові, і господарі не розчарували своїх вболівальників, перемігши чотирьох суперників і зігравши внічию з Мінською командою БНТУ-Белаз. Football, UEFA Europa League: Shakhtar vs. Gent Lviv’s adopted football giants – Shakhtar Donetsk – returned to Europa League action in a Group B match against Belgian side Gent on October 20th. The fixture comes on the heels of a June 2016 friendly between the two squads that saw Shakhtarhandle their opponents 2:0. The Belgian side fared no better in Europa League action, being dispatched in a convincing 5:0 rout that left Shakhtar comfortably 5 points clear of their 2nd-place foes. It seems all but certain now that Shakhtar will return to the Europa League playoffs, where just last year they made a magical run to the semi-finals. New Manager Paulo Fonseca has the side firing on all cylinders as the team has yet to lose any of their last 17 matches in all competitions – they remain undefeated in both Ukrainian Premier League and Europa League action.

LVIV LEADS UKRAINE’S REGIONAL REAL ESTATE

RECOVERY The capital of western Ukraine is thriving as the country continues along path towards EU integration

U

kraine’s ongoing economic recovery is making itself felt in the real estate market throughout the country.

However, the scale of this recovery differs significantly from region to region. Local factors ranging from the presence of reformist municipal authorities to the proximity of Russia’s hybrid war all play a role in determining the robustness of each regional real estate sector. Beyond Kyiv itself, the real estate sectors in most Ukrainian cities continue to share a number of characteristics. Local developers and contractors tend to dominate, with one or two major companies generally accounting for around half of the local construction market.

These entrenched positions are often due to close ties with the city authorities and long-established networks that in many cases date back to Soviet times. Most of the current real estate activity in Ukraine’s regional capitals focuses on residential real estate, with a very limited number of retail and office development projects such as shopping centres in Dnipro, Lviv and Odesa. The regional balance is currently strongly in favour of western Ukraine, which is hardly surprising given continued Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine and the growing economic impetus on westward integration with the EU.

LVIV: Ukraine’s gateway to the EU Lviv is Ukraine’s most

quintessentially European city, both in terms of heritage and architecture. It is also the city to have benefited most from the country’s EU pivot. Located just over 50 km from the European Union’s eastern border, Lviv has proved an appealing option for a growing number of international investors seeking to capitalize on Ukraine’s attractive combination of competitive costs and closeness to EU markets. These geopolitical benefits have added to the solid foundations laid by long-term city mayor Andriy Sadovyi, who is widely credited with creating an investmentfriendly environment while strategically targeting

the IT industry and tourism sector as twin economic engines.

The Lviv real estate sector is currently by far the most robust of any regional Ukrainian market, with shopping centres, hotels, office complexes and other projects all reaching completion over the past 12 months alongside what is a booming residential market. Lviv currently has 214 residential projects on sale, both in the city and the surrounding suburbs. Many of these properties feature Europeanstyle architecture and facilities, with prices that are close to those found in Kyiv. Clients for these properties range from locals seeking upgrades from Soviet-era accommodation to Ukrainian economic migrants earning money abroad with a view to purchasing a family home. There has also been a significant influx of Ukrainians from the Donbas conflict zone, although this market probably peaked in 2014 and early 2015. Lviv’s tourism industry has become increasingly important for the regional economy, but while a steady flow of new cafes, bars, restaurants and souvenir stores has helped the city keep pace with the growing tourist trade, there is still a shortage of quality hotel and hostel options. This is likely to be one of the big growth areas in the coming five to ten years, with out-of-town leisure complex developments already proving popular options.

ODESA: Infrastructure obstacles Odesa occupies sec-

ond place among Ukrainian regional capitals in terms of residential real estate, with 116 new projects currently on the market.

The Black Sea port city’s residential real estate sector is currently proving popular for speculative purchases, with clients looking to capitalize on the appetizing combination of a growing tourist trade alongside limited hotel capacity. Odesa has seen the number of tourists visiting the city rocket in recent years, thanks in large part to the Russian annexation of Crimea. With the occupied Ukrainian peninsula effectively off-limits and the

devaluation of the Ukrainian currency making trips abroad prohibitively expensive, many have opted for Odesa instead. The city has thrived in the role of Ukraine’s summertime capital, but it still lacks the kind of international brand name hotels most people would associate with a major regional resort. This is partly down to infrastructure issues. The newly completed Odesa International Airport terminal building remains closed to the public and subject to endless delays, while the local roads are notorious bad, even by Ukrainian standards. If these issues are fixed, the real estate sector will experience a surge in investment.

KHARKIV: Underpriced investments? The entire

east of Ukraine has been hard-hit by the Russian hybrid war in the Donbas, with many regional development projects understandably put on hold in response to the conflict. Kharkiv has proved the most resilient market in the region. Located just a few dozen miles from the Russian border, Kharkiv was a key Kremlin objective in spring 2014, but a combination of local opposition and effective security counter-measures allowed the city to avoid the fate of Donetsk and Luhansk. Real estate activity in today’s Kharkiv is currently on a smaller scale than the development projects in Kyiv and western Ukraine, but there is nevertheless an active market that many analysts regard as significantly underpriced. There are currently 70 new residential real estate projects in the city, mostly falling within the economy segment. This is a particularly dynamic price range due to the arrival in Kharkiv region of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians fleeing the fighting in the Donbas. If the military situation stabilizes in the Donbas, prices for Kharkiv real estate will likely increase accordingly.

EBA LEGAL AND TAX & ACCOUNTING COMMITTEE MEETING On October 11, 2016, a joint meeting of Legal and Tax & Accounting Committee with the management of Main Department of SFS in Lviv region was conducted. The participants discussed the specifics of the tax audit by SFS Ukraine in 2016.

Ihor Kondro, the Head of SFS in Lviv region said that "despite the gradual transformation of the fiscal service in customer service for tax payers, control function still remains one of the key one.

Its attention when selecting entities for inspections is focused only on those taxpayers who are involved in various schemes, pay low wages, have a little tax burden. Those taxpayers who are in good

faith, fully pay their taxes, do not carry out risky operations cannot be checked during three, five and ten years. Compared with 2010 the number of planned inspections decreased by 10 times".

Iryna Gerega, Vitaliy Voytyuk and Anzhelika Lyubchenko, the Heads of related departments of SFS in Lviv region gave their answers to a number of questions concerning the criteria of enterprises selection for inspections, tax inspections in criminal proceedings, procedures of the audit and on tax laws.

EBA EVENTS INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT ECONOMIC FORUM IN IVANO FRANKIVSK On October 13, 2016, Alina Boychuk and Anton Podilchak, members of EBA Western Ukrainian Office Regional Coordination Council together with Maryana Lutsyshyn, regional manager visited II International Investment Economic Forum in Ivano-Frankivsk. The aim of the Forum was to activate partnership and share experience between the participants and to present the investment opportunities of the city. In welcome worlds and during panel discussions the delegation from EBA Western Ukrainian Office had an opportunity to share the instruments of successful practice of public-private partnership in Lviv Region and the main points of investors’ attraction and maintenance.

EBA SQUASH TOURNAMENT 2016 On October, 22 EBA Western Ukrainian Office Squash Tournament was successfully conducted. In the framework of the tournament the participants had a chance to train with the professional squash coachers during two weeks before.

Q: Dear Colleagues, I am a director of German company which is the main shareholder of Ukrainian LLC, working in the sphere of construction. During our 3-year existence on Ukrainian market our subsidiary company for several times faced with unfair counteragents which deliberately evaded fulfillment of their contractual obligations before our company. Please, advise whether it is possible and how to reveal unfair companies before entering into contractual relations with them?

In order to minimize the risks of suffering losses due to cooperation with unfair companies, first of all it makes sense to conduct at least an initial check of your counteragent. With the development of information technologies and disclosure during recent years of a big amount of free of charge information about physical and legal entities, conducting of such an initial check and estimation of possible risks of non-fulfillment of obligations by counteragent became not too complicated.

In particular, freely available resources allowing to conduct corresponding initial check are: • Unified state register of legal entities and entrepreneurs, which allows to verify the date of entity's registration, i.e. to verify whether it was not established recently with the aim of "cooperating" with your company, the list of entity's shareholders and its beneficiary, information about charter capital amount, entity's director and his limitation of authority (if exist), data on initiation of bankruptcy, liquidation or enforcement proceedings against an entity etc.; • State register of property rights for immovable property, which reflects property rights as well as encumbrances for entity's immovable property; • Registers of the state fiscal service of Ukraine, which provides the possibility to verify whether an entity was registered as a tax payer and whether it has a tax debt before the state; • Unified state register of court decisions, which allows to verify the history and the status of counteragent's involvement into court proceedings as a claimant, respondent or third party.

Except above-mentioned, before conclusion of each of the contract it is also recommended to receive counteragent's original of the Charter, shareholders' general meeting decision on signing the contract (in case it is prescribed by the Charter), power of attorney for an entity's representative to sign the contract (in case the contract is not signed by director), license for conducting corresponding commercial activity (in case it is prescribed by the law).

To sum up, one should keep in mind that every situation is unique, nevertheless, risks of starting commercial activity with unfair companies can be substantially minimized, inter alia, by following above stated advices.
