MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS It’s 2017 and as we take a look back at the year that was in Lviv in 2016, I’d like to take a look at the year ahead in my second-annual “Crystal Ball” predictions. Like in many other places in the world, Ukraine in 2017 is full of questions. How will the new anti-corruption laws hold? Can President Poroshenko continue to hold together his government coalition? What affect will Donald Trump’s new relationship with Russia have on Ukraine? Will the EU finally grant visa-free access to Ukrainians? Ukraine has worked hard to shed its image as a corrupt, former-Soviet nation since the events of 3 years ago. Will the country be able to take another step forward in 2017? Here’s what you can expect in Ukraine in 2017:

1. Travel Will Get Easier Sure, I said this last year, but there are many reasons for hope. First, the government has rid the country of those pesky, Soviet-era “internal passports” – replaced since November by the new ID cards. Second, Ukraine has met all of the EU’s requirements for visa-free travel to the Schengen Zone, including implementing a biometric passport system. The new passports are sleek, as one Ukrainian friend noted to me “It’s the first document given to me by the government that makes me feel Western”, but it’s the visa-free regime that has Ukrainians salivating. The EU has been stalling as they wanted to introduce a “suspension mechanism” apparatus first. Ukraine was set to see the need for visas dropped at the same time as Georgia, but that, unfortunately, doesn’t look like it will come to fruition. The current timeline is for Spring, but don’t be surprised if that date gets punted back again once or twice. In the meantime, budget travel options for Leopolitans should increase substantially next year as both Hungary’s Wizz Air and Ireland’s Ryanair look to move into the market. Slowly but surely…

2. Politics Will Get Messier OK, I’m not being cynical here. Nor am I piling on. But 2017 is shaping up to be an interesting year in Ukrainian politics. First, no one has yet to be held responsible for the killings during the Revolution of Dignity. Expect this issue to come up repeatedly this year. Second, while the next Ukrainian Presidential election isn’t set for 2019, many observers would be surprised if the government lasted that long. While President Poroshenko has managed to hold on to his coalition, there are several names being bandied about that could look to manoeuvre politically this year. The list of names are as diverse as they are powerful and include at least two Leopolitans: former Odesa Governor and Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili; current Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko; former Dnipro Governor and one of Ukraine’s richest men Ihor Kolomoisky, Mayor of Lviv Andriy Sadovyi, and even the frontman of legendary Ukrainian music group Okean Elzy, Lviv’s Svyatoslav Vakarchuk. As an added intrigue, with the introduction of the EDeclaration system and Anti-Corruption Bureau last year, don’t be surprised to see some powerful people ‘thrown under the bus’ in all the manoeuvring.

3. There Will Be Movement in the East (ATO Zone) The bloody war in Eastern Ukraine, which has already claimed nearly 10,000 lives, has remained moreor-less stable for the last two years. Even though there is a “ceasefire” in place, under the terms of the socalled Minsk Agreement, violations are nearly a daily occurrence. However, there are a couple of factors

in play that might allow some movement on a political solution to this terrible war – and they mostly have to do with factors outside of Ukraine’s control – namely, the election of Donald Trump in the USA and the forthcoming Russian Presidential election. While it remains to be seen how much leeway the Republican Congress will give the President-elect when it comes to US-Russia relations, that he’s publicly considering dropping sanctions on Russia could force a political settlement of sorts in the region. And it couldn’t come at a better time for the Russian President, who while unlikely to see a serious opposition movement to the re-election bid he hasn’t formally announced, is still faced with diminished coffers after years of low oil prices, two foreign wars, and a struggling economy. If the sanctions remain, it might be the Russian President that is forced into some kind of political settlement.

4. There Will Be Movement in the West (2026 Olympic Bid) It wasn’t long ago that Lviv was the darling of the Ukrainian sporting world. Delighting fans as friendly hosts of EURO 2012, the city had begun work on a stadium to host the EuroBasket championships and the country’s Olympic committee tapped the city for Ukraine’s first-ever Olympic bid. Then the revolution rocked the country, work stopped on the new stadium, and Ukraine’s sports leagues were thrown into chaos. The city was frustrated after not being selected as the Ukrainian host for the 2017 Eurovision competition. And while the city’s infrastructure was greatly improved before EURO 2012 – with new highways, high-speed trains, high-quality hotels, a brand new airport, and a sparkling new outdoor stadium, the fact remains that the city has no currently suitable location to hold the event. Even the mayor had to answer questions, saying the stadium could be completed in less than 9 months and adding that it would be a“gem of the city”. Lviv 2022 organisers promised another bid in 2026 when they were forced to withdraw last time. Whether work begins on the new stadium in 2017, only time will tell, but alongside improvements at the world-class ski centre at Bukovel, and with bidding expected to begin after the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, you can expect there to be movement on Lviv’s 2026 Olympic aspirations. If the stadium does get built, expect Lviv to be a frontrunner the next time Eurovision inevitably comes Ukraine’s way.

5. Lviv Will Remain the ‘Soul’ of Ukraine Sure, this may be a cop out because I made the same prediction last year, but is it really so hard to predict that Lviv will remain the ‘Soul of Ukraine’? Last year saw the city selected as one of Lonely Planet’s Top 10 European destinations. At the same time, Ukraine’s Osnovy Publishing came out with a gem of a tour guide of the Western Ukrainian capital called ‘Awesome Lviv’ (absolutely worth the price, and a great gift for your English-speaking friends). This year will prove no different as Leopolitans and visitors can expect to enjoy even more world-class music festivals (like Alfa Jazz Fest), special events, (like the Lviv Coffee Festival), and hip hangouts (like the newly-renovated Virmenka) to rival any major European centre. The centre of Western Ukraine’s art scene – Lviv’s iconic Opera & Ballet Theatre – is set to host Kyiv’s popular Dakha Brakha foursome on February 22nd. The four ethnic music artists were all part of Dakh – a popular experimental theatre in Kyiv – when the group formed in 2004. The unique group name comes from the old Ukrainian language and means give/take. The bright, original, and unforgettable image of Dakha Brakha comes from adding rhythms from around the world to their own brand of Ukrainian folk music. Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian, and Australian traditional instrumentation, the group’s astonishingly powerful vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. "ZHYVA VODA" BY KHRYSTYNA SOLOVIY February 21, at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.) Beginning: 19:00 Lviv’s wonderful Opera & Ballet Theatre will host a concert by Ukrainian folk singer Khrystyna Soloviy on February 21st. Born in Drohobych to a family of choral conductors, Soloviy moved to Lviv and headed the Lemkovyna choir for three years. She also teamed with fellow-Leopolitan – OE’s Svyatoslav Vakarchuk – to reach the semifinals of Holos Krayiny, a Ukrainian reality talent show, before releasing her debut album Zhyva Voda (Living Water) in 2015. Soloviy doesn’t play by the rules of the pop music industry – she refuses to appear half-naked in music videos and won’t sing what she calls “commercial”

songs (those simple and catchy ones). She prefers to show off her talent with Ukrainian folk songs, and this strategy seems to be working – the 23-year-old is already a regular on Ukrainian radios and her videos have been going viral online. The secret to Soloviy’s success may lie in her emotional performance and strong voice that captures listeners from the very first bar of music. "ЖИВА ВОДА" ХРИСТИНИ СОЛОВІЙ 21 лютого о 19:00 у Львівському театрі опери та балету (пр. Свободи, 28) На сцені Львівського театру опери та балету 21 лютого пройде концерт виконавиці народних пісень Христини Соловій. Співачка народилась в Дрогобичі в сім'ї хорових диригентів, а пізніше вона переїхала зі своєю сім'єю до Львова і протягом трьох років співала в хорі "Лемковина". У 2013 році Христина взяла участь в українському шоу талантів "Голос країни" в команді Святослава Вакарчука і вийшла до півфіналу конкурсу. У 2015 році вона випустила свій дебютний альбом "Жива Вода", до якого увійшли 12 пісень (десять українських народних і дві власні). Христини Соловій не грає за правилами бізнесу поп-музики. Вона відмовляється з'являтися напівоголеною в музичних кліпах,

і не співає те, що вона називає "комерційними піснями" – її мелодії прості і легко запам'ятовуються. VITALY MANSKY’S ‘CLOSE RELATIONS’ January 29th at 19:00 at Forum Lviv’s Planeta Kino Cinema (7B Pid Dubom St.) Vitaly Mansky’s new documentary ‘Close Relations’, where he personally investigates his family’s Ukrainian roots (or lack thereof) and discovers the definition of national identity, will premiere in Lviv on January 29th at Planeta Kino cinema. What is national identity – a passport or bloodlines? What happens when an army rolls up into your city and you suddenly live in another country? Mansky’s family are all former Soviet citizens and Russian speakers and don’t consider themselves of any particular ethnicity or origin. However, the fault lines of the post-Soviet era create cracks in the family that reached a breaking point with Putin’s military annexation of Crimea

and incursions into Eastern Ukraine. In the film, Mansky talks to relatives in Western Ukraine (Lviv) who consider themselves Ukrainian and oriented towards the West, as well as ones in Russian-occupied Simferopol and Donetsk who look to Moscow for support and guidance. ‘Close Relations’ explores the amusing, intriguing differences of opinion about the fate of Ukraine as it deals with warfare with its neighbour. The topic became even more personal for the director when Russian Ministry of Culture publicly withdrew its financial support for the film, which led to his move to Latvia where he know lives and works. Vitaly Mansky is one of the most acclaimed contemporary

documentary filmmakers. He has directed more than 30 films, which have premiered at more than 500 international film festivals. His last film, ‘Under the Sun’, was a behind-the-scenes exposé of the North Korea propaganda machine, employing footage Mansky and his team managed to smuggle out of the country. ‘Close Relations’ will be released across Ukraine on February 2nd, but Leopolitans and guests of the city will get an exclusive premiere on January 29th as well as a retrospective of Mansky films at the Lviv Film Centre (14A Volodymyra Velykoho St.) from January 30th-February 1st. Під дубом, 7Б) Прем'єра нової документальної стрічки російського режисера Віталія Манського "Рідні", в якій він досліджує українське коріння своєї сім'ї (або його відсутність) та встановлює визначення національної ідентичності відбудеться у Львові 29 січня в кінотеатрі "Планета Кіно". Що таке національна ідентичність – паспорт чи родовід? Що відбувається, коли чуже військо вторгається в твоє місто, і ти раптом опиняєшся в іншій країні? У родині Манських всі колишні радянські громадяни і російськомовні та не вважають себе належними до будь-якої конкретної етнічної групи. Проте, розлам пострадянської епохи пройшов через сім'ю разом з російською анексією Криму

і вторгненням російських військ у Східну Україну. У фільмі режисер спілкується зі своїми львівськими родичами, які вважають себе українцями, що поважають демократичні цінності, а також з російськомовними – в окупованому Сімферополі й Донецьку, які вважають, що з Москвою їм буде краще. Фільм "Рідні" досліджує розбіжності в поглядах на долю України в час війни з північним сусідом. Ukrainian folk band TIK will bring their national tour to Lviv for a jolly show at the city’s circus on February 7th. TIK goes all the way back to 2005 when then-history student Viktor Broniuk (vocals, accordion) and music student Denys Repey (bass guitar) met in Vinnytsia. They named the band TIK after the Ukrainian phrase “Tverezist I Kultura” (Sobriety and Culture). They released their debut album LiteraDura (Crazy Literature) in 2007 and their second disc tyHYI (Quiet) the following year. Their 2011 third album Vesilnyi (The Wedding One) won the group the reputation as one of Ukraine’s most festive, paving the way for a collaboration with the popular Irina Bilyk on Ne Tsiluy (Don’t Kiss). They continued to work together, releasing the new track Zyma (Winter) and heading out on a Best Ukrainian Hits tour that saw them perform a Ukrainianrecord 24 concerts in 30 days! The band does not shy away from the events that have rocked Ukraine in recent years. Among the group’s comic videos, there are some pretty serious ones devoted to Ukraine and those that struggle for it, such as: Zapah Viyny (The Smell of War), Lyuby Ty Ukrainu (Love YOUkraine), and IstoriYA (History). Lviv’s festive centre of the holiday season – the Lviv Opera & Ballet Theatre – will host a grand concert by the sensual and provocative vocalist Gaitana on February 13th. The artist of Ukrainian and Congolese descent began charming audiences in 2003 with her versatile personality and graceful mastery of voice. Her combination of jazz, funk, soul, and folk music would lead to several of her songs becoming smash hits. Over the years she has released 8 albums, more than 20 music videos, and has won several awards, including Best Female Artist at the Ukrainian Music Awards and ‘Face of the Francophonie Festival’ in 2010. Один з найпопулярніших українських гуртів "TIK" виступить у львівському цирку 7 лютого. А бувало, що Ви помилялись?

Майже 20 років зі своїх 34 я займаюсь шоу-бізнесом, і ще задовго до “Квартал – Концерту” в мене вже була своя організація – концертне агентство “МастерШоу”. Скажу Вам навіть більше – я вже в 14 років працював у сфері шоу-бізнесу. Справа в тому, що я ніколи ні на кого не працював – завжди був сам собі хазяїн, планував власний режим роботи та вільний час.

Збрешу, якщо скажу “ні”. Безумовно, буває – не всі концерти проходять з повним аншлагом. Інколи здається, що від того або іншого артиста публіка буде в повному захопленні, але на практиці виявляється навпаки. Але ми не впадаємо в розпач – це ж нормально. Як мовиться, хто не ризикує…

Як Ви оцінюєте гастрольний ринок в Україні зараз? Чи можливо сказати, що він "віджив" після провального для сфери 2014 року. І що буде відбуватись у 2017 році? Важким був 2014 рік – всіх охопила паніка, концерти часто відміняли. Тільки у 2015 році ми поступово почали виходити з цього стану, а вже у 2016 ситуація більш-менш вирівнялась: стали проводитися концерти, оскільки платоспроможність у людей зросла. Мені здається у 2017 концертів в країні стане ще більше, ніж до 2014 року. Чи є концертна діяльність взагалі прибутковою сферою? Організація квиткових касових концертів – це дуже трудомісткий процес, дуже ризикований і дійсно, заробляти гроші та робити прибуткові концерти справа складна. Мало концертів, які проходять з прибутком для організаторів. Чому організатори не зупиняються, а продовжують організовувати концерти? Це можна назвати вже професійною хворобою. Як Ви шукаєте та обираєте виконавців? Чи орієнтуєтесь Ви на смаки та побажання публіки в кожному конкретному місті? Ми постійно проводимо опитування серед глядачів і потенційних глядачів, щоб взнати, кого хоче бачити публіка. Але ми також займаємося популярними артистами, яких в Україні з якихось причин не знають, підписуємо з ними контракти про ряд концертів. На жаль, на це не завжди вистачає часу й ресурсів. Тому правильно буде відповісти, що вибір артистів, що привозяться на 50% – це результат нашого моніторингу й очікувань мешканців міста і на 50 % – моє особисте рішення.

У цьому році Ви відкрили представництво "Квартал-Концерт" у м. Львів та провели досить багато концертів та турів в Україні. Якій концерт був найуспішнішим у 2016 році? Найбільш значущими в сезоні були концерти Хосе Каррераса, які відбулися 17 грудня в Києві і 20 грудня, – в Одесі. Вперше в Україні виступив Лондонський церковний хор, який співав з Мадонною, Стінгом, Тіною Тернер, Селін Діон і іншими найвідомішими вокалістами світу. Концерт відбувся 9 листопада на сцені Національного палацу мистецтв "Україна" в Києві. Подорожуючи Європою я відвідав концерт ансамблю Los Vivancos, що майстерно виконує

фламенко і зацікавився цим колективом. Вони вже досить давно відомі за кордоном, а в Україні й, зокрема, Львові виступили вперше. Які у Вас в плани на майбутнє? Зараз ми успішно розвиваємо окремий напрям – "Квартал-концерт International", це гастрольна діяльність артистів за кордоном. Також в найближчих планах відкриття офісів в Ізраїлі, Німеччині і США. Ми вже працюємо в Канаді, Великобританії, Латвії, Греції, Іспанії, Італії, Білорусі, Грузії, Азербайджані. Квартал-Концерту лише два роки та агенція – хоч і молодий, але достатньо амбітний гравець національного масштабу. В чому секрет Вашого успіху? Секрет нашого успіху, напевно, в тому, що ми постійно працюємо. Потрібно постійно бути в колах, пов'язаних з шоу-бізнесом, спілкуватися з артистами, продюсерами. Звичайно, це безперервна велика праця. У компанії, безумовно, має бути успішна історія. Квартал-концерт вже третій рік займається своїм бізнесом і щороку відкриває нові ринки.

“MARRIAGE IN ONE DAY” PROJECT

ПРОЕКТ “ШЛЮБ ЗА ОДИН ДЕНЬ”

In August 2016, Ukraine launched the “Marriage in One Day” pilot project aimed at a simplified, one-day marriage registration process in six cities across Ukraine, including Lviv. The project allows Ukrainian citizens to forego the queues and bureaucracy associated with the former, Soviet-era method – which included a 30-day waiting period. Ukrainians can now choose to ‘tie the knot’ at such Leopolitan landmarks as the Shevchenkivsky Hai open-air museum, the Lviv Airport, or even Arena Lviv. The program is expected to available in all Ukrainian regions in 2017.

У серпні 2016 в Україні розпочато пілотний проект "Шлюб за один день", спрямований на спрощення процесу реєстрації шлюбу в шести містах нашої держави, в тому числі й у Львові. Проект дозволяє українським громадянам обійтись без довгих черг і бюрократії, що асоціюються з колишньою, радянською епохою, коли потрібно були чекати ще 30 днів до реєстрації. Тепер українці можуть "стати на рушничок" в таких оригінальних місцях, як, наприклад, музей під відкритим небом Шевченківський Гай, львівський міжнародний аеропорт чи навіть стадіон "Арена Львів". Очікується, що програма стане доступною у всіх регіонах України вже у 2017 році.

VIP GUEST OF THE YEAR: CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU In July, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid a quick visit to Canadian military trainers in the Lviv-region training base at Yavoriv. Trudeau was in Ukraine to finalise the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement and came to the base to show appreciation to the 200 Canadian troops from CFB Valcartier, Quebec that are stationed there. The Canadians, who arrived last year, train regular Ukrainian army troops on the finer points of combat and roadside bomb detection. The new Canadian Prime Minister has

made an effort to show Canadian solidarity with Ukraine – in addition to the Free Trade Agreement, Canada looks likely to extend the training mission, has announced over $8 million towards the training and equipping of Ukrainian law enforcement, and will be stationing troops and fighter jets in Latvia as part of NATO forces meant to provide a deterrent to Russian aggression in the area. Canadian International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland, who at one time worked as a journalist in Ukraine, met with media in Lviv.

CULTURAL PROJECT OF THE YEAR: “SPACE OF SYNAGOGUES” PROJECT In September 2016, the ‘Space of Synagogues’ project was launched in Central Lviv’s former Jewish Quarter. The cities Jewish buildings, including the 16thCentury Golden Rose Synagogue, the Beth Hamidrash House of Learning, and the Great City Synagogue, had all been destroyed, abandoned, and left in ruins. The project transformed these spaces into a memorial place for remembrance about the fate of the sites and the city’s Jewish community. The ‘Space of Synogogues’ memorial is a unique urban space that allows people to move freely around the area while reading the history of the sites or taking a casual rest for a moment on contemplation. The project was the work of historical research, public discussion, and collaboration between academics, city officials, and Jewish organisations in Lviv and elsewhere. The project aims to honour the centuries-old history of Lviv’s Jewish community and to foster a deeper understanding of the city’s shared history and heritage.

КУЛЬТУРНИЙ ПРОЕКТ РОКУ: ПРОЕКТ “ПРОСТІР СИНАГОГ” У вересні 2016 відкрився проект "Простір синагог" в колишньому єврейському кварталі, що у давньому центрі Львова. Єврейські будівлі міста, зокрема, синагога 16 століття "Золота Роза", школа "Бет Хамідраш" та велика міська синагога, усі були повністю зруйновані під час війни й закинуті. Завдяки цьому проекту ці місця перетворюються на меморіали пам'яті долі єврейської громади міста. Меморіал "Простір синагог" – це унікальний міський простір, де люди можуть вільно пересуватися, ознайомлюючись з історією цих місць або затриматись на хвилинку для роздумів. Проект став результатом історичних досліджень, публічних обговорень і співпраці між вченими, міською владою та єврейськими організаціями Львова та інших міст. Проект спрямований на вшанування багатовікової історії єврейської громади Львова та сприяння глибшому розумінню загальної історії міста і спільної спадщини.

ARTISTIC PROJECT OF THE YEAR: BALLET−FEST CHOREOGRAPHY FESTIVAL In April, Leopolitans and guests of the city were blown away by the spectacular Ballet-Fest Choreography Festival. The project began at the beginning of the year and consisted of several stages where the top choreographers and dancers moved on. Dancers from the Lviv Theatre

of Opera & Ballet performed ballets for an all-star jury. The festival aimed to introduce Leopolitans and guests of the city with top-level innovations in the art of dance, as well as to promote the art of ballet by showcasing its diverse nature through unique choreography, techniques,

stories, musical interpretation, and emotional expression. This eclectic festival of dance represented a wide range of ballet styles – from neoclassical to contemporary – and garnered rave reviews from the adoring public and the respect of the national media.

ARRIVAL OF THE YEAR: THE NEW SYKHIV TRAMLINE While Ukraine’s trams still have a long way to go to catch up to “European standards”, Lviv took a small step toward that goal with the launch of the new Sykhiv tramline in November. With the assistance of European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD) and German grants, Lviv finally completed work

on the line to the bustling residential district of Sykhiv. Originally planned in the 1980s, work on the connection was scrapped after the fall of the Soviet Union. Dreams of reviving the much-needed connection were revived with independence. While he area was connected by trolleybus since 1997, the work on the tram-

line that had begun in 2008 was delayed due to lack of funds. External funding was secured in 2011 and work began in earnest in 2014. The new line features 7 of the brand-new Electron carriages purchased by the city just this year and connects Sykhiv residents to Lviv City Centre with a comfortable 25-30 minute ride.

стійно затримувалось через брак коштів. Зовнішнє фінансування довгоочікуваного проекту було отримано в 2011 році, а конкретні роботи на маршруті почались у 2014. In a year that featured both the UEFA EURO football championships and the Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil, it was Lviv-region chess wizard Mariya Muzychuk that stole our hearts. In March, Lviv hosted the Women’s World Chess Championships between our own Muzychuk and China’s two-time champion Hou Yifan. Muzychuk had claimed the World Champion title in 2015 after besting 63 of the world’s top women’s players at the World Championships in Russia. As Yifan was unable to attend that event due to scheduling conflicts, this special woman-to-woman duel was arranged in Lviv. The prize package for the 10-match series was 200,000 EUR, with 120,000 going to the winner. While Muzychuk would end up her title to the amazing Yifan by the score of 3-6, this incredible event attracted the great interest of Leopolitans – who have a great heritage and interest in the “king’s game”. The series featured celebrity Ukrainians invited to make the first move for the ladies, including: Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi; Okean Elzy frontman Svyatoslav Vakarchuk and his father Ivan (the former Minister of Education & Science and current Lviv University professor); President of the National Paralympic Committee Valeriy Sushkevych; and FC Karpaty players Volodymyr Kostevych and Ihor Khudobyak. Muzychuk will aim to regain her World Champion title from Yifan at the World Championships in Iran in February-March 2017.

Рік 2016 був багатий на спортивні події – тут і чемпіонат Європи з футболу і літні Олімпійські ігри в Ріо де Жанейро, але найбільше запам’ятались досягнення львівської шахістки, гросмейстера Марії Музичук. В березні у Львові пройшли матчі чемпіонату світу з шахів серед жінок між українкою Марією Музичук і дворазовою чемпіонкою Китаю Хоу Іфань. М. Музичук здобула титул чемпіона світу 2015 року, ставши першою серед 63 провідних світових шахісток на чемпіонаті світу в Росії. Оскільки Хоу Іфань не змогла тоді взяти участь в цих змаганнях через конфлікт графіків, їх спеціальний турнір був організований у Львові. Призовий фонд серії з 10 матчів складав 200 000 євро, з них 120 000 – для переможця. І хоча переможницею турніру стала китаянка з рахунком 6-3, ця нещоденна шахова подія викликала великий інтерес у львів’ян, серед яких "гра королів" має велику популярність. Перші ходи в партіях було надано право зробити відомим українцям, зокрема, хід е2 – е4 зробили мер Львова Андрій Садовий, фронтмен гурту "Океан Ельзи" Святослав Вакарчук і його батько Іван (колишній міністр освіти й науки, а тепер професор Львівського університету), Президент Національного паралімпійського комітету Валерій Сушкевич, а також гравці ФК "Карпати" Володимир Костевич та Ігор Худоб'як. Наша шахістка матиме нагоду повернути собі титул чемпіонки світу в поєдинку з Хоу Іфань на чемпіонаті світу в Ірані в лютому-березні 2017 року.

In a busy 2016 year for Ukrainian sports – with the EURO Football Championships, the Olympics and Paralympics, Lviv hosting the Women’s World Chess Championships, and Shakhtar making a run to the Europa League semifinals, it seems only appropriate that we award Lviv Today’s Sports Personality of the Year Award to all of Lviv’s Olympians and Paralympians. In Rio de Janiero competed 206 Ukrainians, including 18 Leopolitans. Ukraine took home 11 medals, including gold in gymnastics and canoeing. And it was on the water where Western Ukraine shone brightest as well. Lviv’s own Taras Mishchuk and partner Dmitry Yanchuk (Khmelnitsky) managed to overcome a sluggish start to come home with a bronze medal in the C-2 1000m canoeing event. Not to be outdone, Ukraine’s Paralympians were a force to be reckoned with in Brazil. The team finished 3rd in the medal count with 117 medals (including 41 gold) and set a total of 22 world records en route to Ukraine’s best-ever performance by an Olympic or Paralympic team. The team featured 172 athletes competing in 15 different sports and came home world-beaters and record-holders! Lviv was especially well represented, with golden performances by Viktor Didukh in table tennis, Andriy Demchuk in fencing, and the powerhouse 7-a-side football team. Lviv’s Anton Datsko also came home with a medal after taking gold in the wheelchair fencing event. But in perhaps his final Paralympic event, 32-year-old Paralympic superstar Roman Pavlyk returned home from Rio with medals from his fourth consecutive Paralympic Games! The former Paralympic champion added a silver in the 400m and bronze in the long jump (less than one inch from gold!) to add to his already impressive 7 Paralympic medals.

Рік 2016 був напруженим для українських спортсменів – європейські футбольні чемпіонати, Олімпійські та Параолімпійські ігри, чемпіонат світу з шахів серед жінок у Львові, успіх футболістів донецького "Шахтаря", що вийшли до півфіналу Ліги Європи, тож редакція Lviv Today вважає доречним відзначити нагородою "Спортсмен року" всіх олімпійців і паралімпійців Львова. На олімпіаді в Ріо-де-Жанейро змагались 206 українців, серед них – 18 львів’ян. Українські спортсмени вибороли 11 медалей, в тому числі золоті – в гімнастиці і веслуванні на каное. Представники Західної України львів’янин Тарас Міщук і його партнер Дмитро Янчук з Хмельницького відважно змагались у веслуванні на каное в категорії C-2 на дистанції 1000 м і привезли додому бронзову медаль. Паралімпійці України також були силою, з якою доводилось рахуватись у Бразилії. В командному заліку українські паралімпійці посіли третє місце, здобувши 117 медалей (в тому числі 41 золоту) і встановили загалом 22 світові рекорди – найкраще досягнення за всю історію виступу наших олімпійських або паралімпійських збірних. У нашій команді було 172 спортсменів, які змагались у 15 видах спорту і ставали переможцями та рекордсменами. Львів був особливо добре представлений – Віктор Дідух здобув золото в настільному тенісі, Андрій Демчук – у фехтуванні. Золото також здобула наша футбольна команда 7х7. Львів’янин Антон Дацко також привіз додому золоту медаль за фехтування на інвалідному візку. А Роман Павлик завоював у Ріо медаль четвертий раз поспіль на Паралімпійських іграх! Можливо, це його останній виступ на Паралімпіаді (йому вже 32 роки), не будемо загадувати, але він здобув срібло в забігу на 400 метрів і бронзу в стрибках в довжину (відставши від переможця лише на 2,5 см!), додавши ці нагороди до своїх попередніх 7 Паралімпійських медалей.

She first attracted the attention of international management firms at a fashion event in Paris in January and was then selected for the prestigious Miu Miu show later that month. The charismatic, cheerful, and ambitious girl is fluent in English and has artistic talents to match her beauty, which gives her a great outlook for a glamorous modelling career. The “elvish” looking Ratner has worked well with the OK'S Models team and has quickly become one of Ukraine’s top models. WINE & HARD LIQUOR REPOSITORY What inspired you to create Enoteca? We are native Leopolitans and, as you know, Lviv is a tourist city with a great number of establishments and entertainments – both for locals and for our city’s guests. For a long time, we had dreamed of opening some special place that is unique to our hometown. It’s like the idea popped up itself – one moment we just started dreaming about our unique space and the next we already had a clear vision of how to bring it to life. We shared our thoughts with our friends at Moot Design Studio, and they supported the concept and agreed to design the interior. It’s not right to call Enoteca just a regular business, because for us it is our second home where we are always glad to meet new and returning guests.

How did you come up with the name? What does it mean? The word ‘enoteca’ is of Greek origin and literally means wine repository of collection of bottled wine. While thinking over the ideal name, we tried our best to depict both qualitative and quantitative features. For us it was crucial that an enoteca preserves truly unique assortments – the same way as we offer a very special and carefully selected product range.

What is so special about Enoteca? How does it differ from other shops that sell beverages? First of all, Enoteca offers high-quality service and truly appreciates every customer. In addition to our top-notch assortment of drinks on the shelves, perhaps our greatest advantage comes from the possibility to provide our LVIV TODAY | January 2017

customers with consultation thanks to our experienced and knowledgeable on-site sommelier. So at our place, you can not only purchase a beverage, but you can learn how to serve it properly as well as taste it on the spot in a relaxing atmosphere. While working with our customers, we try to give maximum attention to select the beverage that our customers would most prefer. We strive to create a cosy atmosphere where one feels comfortable enough to stay as long as they want.

Could you tell us more about Enoteca’s team? During many years of working together, we realised that we are all quite different. However, it’s actually a great thing as we complement each other, help each other develop, and encourage each other to reach new achievements. We are united by similar viewpoints, long-lasting friendships, and a spirit that harmoniously creates the pleasant atmosphere that makes Enoteca such a comfortable place. At the heart of the team is our chief sommelier Serhiy Volodymyrovych. What are your plans for the future? We consider developing Lviv’s drinking culture to be our mission. Our next step will be to open the third wine hall to host tastings and thematic workshops. Lviv’s always colourful and rich holiday event calendar once again attracted thousands of Leopolitans and guests of the city to the seasonal markets located on Rynok Square and along the Opera House alley. Merrymakers had a wide range of delicious Christmas treats and delightful folk crafts, while theatrical performances like Voskresinnya’s ‘When Angels Came From the Sky’ entertained the bundled-up crowds. Highlights of this year’s celebrations included the annual ‘Blaze of the Christmas Star’ parade, the ‘Great Carol’ festival, the jolly Santas fun run at the B. Khmelnytsky Culture & Recreation Park, and the ‘Christmas Celebrations’ at the Museum of Folk Architecture & Rural Life. The park also played host to the annual Pampuh Holiday – aka Donut Fest – that has become one of the most unique and beloved events on Lviv’s holiday calendar. НОВОРІЧНО-РІЗДВ’ЯНИЙ МАРАФОН Як завжди барвистий і багатий календар святкувань у Львові традиційно привабив тисячі львів’ян та гостей міста на передноворічні ярмарки, розташовані на пл. Ринок і на алеї перед оперним театром. До уваги відвідувачів, як завжди, був широкий асортимент смачних різдвяних страв та напоїв і виробів народних художніх промислів, а також театральні вистави театру "Воскресіння", вертепи й колядники усіх вікових категорій, які добре приготували свій репертуар до свят. Найбільше зацікавлення викликали щорічний самодіяльний парад "Світло різдвяної зірки", фестиваль хорів "Велика коляда", веселий забіг Дідів Морозів та Санта Клаусів в парку культури й відпочинку ім. Б. Хмельницького, і святкування Різдва у Шевченківському гаї. Там же проводилось традиційне львівське "Свято Пампуха", яке вже давно стало однією з найбільш унікальних і улюблених подій для всіх, хто поважає українські традиції. ATO SOLDIERS GIVE UKRAINIAN CHILDREN A SPECIAL HOLIDAY GIFT Last month, Lviv’s trendy Virmenka coffee shop played host to the unique presentation of the ‘ATO Soldiers Read Ukrainian Fairy Tales to Children’ cultural project. Ukrainian fighters also recorded an audio disc with the fairy tales which was released on St. Nicolaus Day Eve. The project features 18 soldiers who fought in the ATO zone between 2014-16 and represent different cities of Ukraine – Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. The fairy tales on the CD are divided into 3 parts: Folk Tales, Carpathian Legends, and Ukrainian Authors – featuring the likes of MykhailoKotsiubynsky and the worldfamous AndreyKurkov. CDs will be donated to boarding schools and sent to children in the ATO zone via soldiers serving there over the holiday season. An example of what you’ll find on the CD comes from Ivan Gavrilko, a rifleman in the 28th brigade. Before the war he worked as a geologist, but when he was in ATO – and his two sons were waiting for him at home – Ivan would read them stories over the phone whenever he could find the time. This is what drew him to the project – not only to record audio of a fairy tale for his own children, but also for those whose fathers are now serving in the ATO zone. The recordings will be published online in early 2017 so that everyone across Ukraine will be able to enjoy them with their children. ПОДАРУНОК ДІТЯМ ВІД БІЙЦІВ АТО У грудні минулого року у знаменитій львівській кав’ярні "Вірменка" відбулась презентація унікальної соціальної та культурної ініціативи "Бійці ATO читають українські казки дітям". Українські воїни також записали аудіо диск з казками, який був випущений у переддень дня св. Миколая і став приємним подарунком для дітей. У цьому проекті взяли участь 18 військовослужбовців, які перебували в зоні ATO протягом 2014-2016 років і які представляють різні міста України – Львів, Харків, Дніпро, Івано-Франківськ та Чернівці. Наприклад, Іван Гаврилко був стрільцем 28 бригади, проте його основна професія – геолог. Коли він знаходився на передовій, двоє синів чекали його вдома, і коли це було можливо, вечорами Іван читав їм казки

по телефону. Тому Іван вирішив взяти участь у проекті та записати казки не тільки для своїх дітей, а й для тих, чиї батьки тепер служать в зоні ATO. Казки цієї збірки діляться на три частини: народні казки, карпатські легенди та авторські казки М. Коцюбинського і сучасного українського письменника А. Куркова. Компакт-диски будуть передані в інтернати і відправлені дітям в зоні АТО через бійців, які будуть служити там в найближчий період. Крім того, на початку року ці аудіозаписи будуть опубліковані в Інтернеті, так що всі охочі в Україні зможуть послухати їх разом зі своїми дітьми. Оскільки ця культурна ініціатива була втілена в життя завдяки команді кав’ярні "Вірменка", тут завжди можна придбати компактдиск на подарунок дітям.

DAVYDENKO’S ‘ACTION’ Notable Ukrainian artist Oleg Davydenko, whose works are in private collections across Europe, North America, and Japan, has brought his spectacular ‘Action’ exhibition to delight Leopolitans and guests of the city. Opened since December 20th, the exhibition is hosted by the Lviv Art Palace and features abstract paintings as well as bronze sculptures. At first look, Davydenko transforms the elemental forms of the sculptures into bodily formations. He renews the content and strength of the traditional, natural forms by establishing new relationships between space, the object, and the viewer. A graduate of the Lviv Academy of Arts and Member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine, Oleg believes that art is inspired by the necessity to depict a human being and will live as long as love exists. Through his works, he attempts to reveal the complexity and multifaceted meaning of the human soul beyond poverty or manifestations of social success. The exhibition will run through February 28th at the Lviv Art Palace (17 Kopernika St.).

"ДІЯ" ОЛЕГА ДАВИДЕНКА Знаний український художник Олег Давиденко, чиї роботи можна побачити в приватних колекціях Європи, Північної Америки та Японії, має що показати львів’янам та гостям міста на своїй виставці під назвою "Дія". В експозиції, що відкрилась 20 грудня у Львівському Палаці мистецтв (вул. Коперника, 17) , представлені абстрактні картини, а також бронзові скульптури. Холодний, на перший погляд, метал митець перетворює в обриси людських фігур. Він оновлює зміст і силу традиційних природних форм шляхом встановлення нових взаємин між простором, об'єктом і глядачем. Випускник Львівської академії мистецтв, член Спілки художників України, Олег вважає, що мистецтво надихається необхідністю зображувати людську істоту і буде жити, доки існує любов. Через свої роботи він намагається виявити складність і багатогранність людської душі незалежно від матеріальних статків чи соціального успіху. Виставка триватиме до 28 лютого. Запрошуємо!

GOOD DEEDS BRING JOY! Just in time for the holiday season, Lviv’s Fujikura Automotive Ukraine signed a memorandum of cooperation with the city’s Ohmatdyt regional children’s hospital to support better conditions for the patients and medical staff. In reality, the company has already worked with the hospital for nearly half a year, where they raised money for the purchase of a phototherapy lamp for the reanimation of newborns through the Happy Kilometre charity run and made a generous 500,000 UAH donation to help the hospital renovate its surgical department’s operating room. “Lviv’s Ohmatdyt regional hospital is Western Ukraine’s top children’s medical institution and provides professional medical help to many critically ill children”, says Fujikura Ukraine’s First Deputy General Director Oksana Lashmanova. “Fujikura Automotive Ukraine decided to contribute to this vitally important issue and organized the Happy Kilometre charity event, which will be an annual event and which will continue to fundraise for necessary equipment and renovations. On the roadmap of cooperation, furniture and hospital facilities are also planned for purchase.” Currently, the hospital has finished about 1/3 of the renovations. The renovations are designed to not interfere with the work of the surgery department, which treats patients from across the region every day. As Fujikura Automotive Ukraine cares not only for the repairs of the hospital, but also for its patients, the company organised a festive holiday celebration, full of jolly contests and workshops, on the eve of St. Nicholaus Day to coincide with the signing of the memorandum. Young patients at the hospital made New Year’s decorations from felt that were used to decorate the main New Year’s tree in the main hall of Fujikura Automotive Ukraine’s office in Lviv. “The health of our children, of our future, is truly priceless and we are tremendously grateful to all the people who sympathise and help us”, said Ohmatdyt Regional Hospital Chief Medical Director Maryana Voznytsya. Наприкінці 2016 року львівська обласна дитяча клінічна лікарня “ОХМАТДИТ” та Fujikura Automotive Ukraine Lviv підписали меморандум про співпрацю, в якому йдеться про те, що компанія опікуватиметься медичним закладом впродовж тривалого часу, поступово змінюючи на краще умови перебування у лікарні як маленьких пацієнтів, так і медичного персоналу. Фактична співпраця між Fujikura Automotive Ukraine Lviv та лікарнею “ОХМАТДИТ” триває вже майже півроку. За цей час Fujikura долучилася до збору коштів на лампу фототерапії для реанімаційного відділення ОХМАДИТу, організувавши благодійний забіг “Щасливий кілометр”. Таким чином зібрали трішки більше, ніж 20 тисяч гривень. Також Fujikura виділила 0,5 млн гривень на ремонт операційного блоку лікарні.

UKRAINE’S WACKIEST FESTIVAL Malanka, or ‘Old New Year Celebrations’, is one of the most popular traditional festivals in Western Ukraine. It’s celebrated on the night of January 13th-14th, which marks New Year’s Eve according to the old Julian calendar. There perhaps is no greater place to check out the festival than in the village of Krasnoilsk, where Malanka is a highly-anticipated party. Locals, young and old, wear traditional masks and carnival costumes while strolling from house to house to sing carols, wish the hosts good luck, and playing pranks or short plays.

Krasnoilsk is located in the Chernivtsi region, just 8 km from the Romania border, and has 5 districts. Each district organises its own marching troupe and commanders to coordinate the preparation of costumes for the Malanka parade and other celebrations. While on Sunday, January 15th Chernivtsi played host for the spectacular ethno-folk festival “Malanka-Fest” in which took part 49 teams. As festival’s highlight came parade of specially decorated motor platforms, which competed for the main prize of 50 thousands UAN. LVIV TODAY | January 2017

Найяскравіше і найвеселіше цю календарну подію, яку ще називають Переберія, відмічають в селі Красноїльськ, де до свята Маланки ретельно готуються заздалегідь. Місцеві жителі, молоді й старі, вдягають чудернацькі маски та карнавальні костюми, ходять від хати до хати, співають колядки, бажають господарям усіляких гараздів, не забуваючи встругнути якусь штуку, розігруючи короткі сценки, в яких дуже легко впізнати тих, кому вони адресовані.

Красноїльськ знаходиться в у Чернівецькій області, всього за 8 км від румунського кордону. Село має 5 районів (кутків) і кожен куток організовує свою власну трупу з власним командиром, який координує підготовку костюмів для параду Маланки. А в неділю 15 січня у Чернівцях пройшов масштабний фольклорно-етнографічний фестиваль “Маланка-Фест”, в якому взяти участь 49 (!) колективів. Особливістю “Маланка-фесту” була присутність великої кількості моторизованих пересувних засобів – платформ, які змагались за головний приз – 50 тисяч гривень.

LVIV'S AKURAT COMPANY CONTINUES TO GROW L

viv’s Akurat company is well-known for its trendy restaurants and popular shops, including: Hrushevsky Cinema Jazz, Panska Charka, Honest Meat, Del Pesto, Kogut Josper Pub, Virmenka Coffee Shop, the Modern Art-Hotel and shops Tinctures from Lviv, which one can find in Lviv, Kyiv, Odessa, Kharkiv, Dnipro and even at famous ski resort Bukovel. The man behind all of these venues is company founder and General Director Taras Kolodiy. He shared with Lviv Today the key points in the company’s history and its roadmap to success.

How did the Akurat company begin? It all started with my hobby of making homemade beverages. At first, I created them for myself and later for friends. In time, this hobby morphed into a serious business project of opening an elite pub where guests could taste the beverages created by my recipes. This turned into the Panska Charka restaurant. Later on, we opened other restaurants and the Modern Hotel. Just last year, we restored Lviv’s famous Virmenka coffee shop. During the whole time though, we never forgot about developing beverages – and we moved to a factory-scale considering that primarily we were producing Absolute Standard horilka (vodka). We first presented those beverages at Panska Charka, and later in our whole network of specialty shops named “Tinctures from Lviv”.

Homemade beverages have become a well-appreciated trend in the last few years. What is special about the ones you create? I’m all for the creation of your own unique product. I’m deeply fascinated with the creation process itself, as it takes over half a year to present a high-quality beverage. I do my best to discover and revive old recipes and introduce them into our

production, while at the same time experimenting with new tastes. Actually, I am among those first producers of homemade beverages in Ukraine, that are certified to make beverages according to all State standards and technical conditions. All of our beverages are made from ecologically pure raw goods that are purchased from Western Ukraine.

Which of your ‘tinctures’ is most popular? Do you have a favourite? Today we produce over 30 different tinctures with different recipes – some sweet, some sour, some bitter, as well as low- and high-alcohol beverages with alcohol content from 27% to 50%. To make it easier for our guests, we have introduced free tastings at all of our shops so that each can discover their own favourites. Honestly speaking, all of our tinctures are extremely popular. That being said, “12 Herbs” was named “Lviv’s Best Tincture” in 2012 and this one is my personal favourite. In addition to the tinctures, and in honour of opening the Virmenka coffee shop, we have also introduced liquors – I prefer “Old Lviv”. As for novelties, I recommend everyone to try our exclusive beverages made with tinctures, such as glogg, punch, hot lemonade, or the “crazy chocolate” drink that are all available at Virmenka coffee shop and in the shop “Tinctures from Lviv” located in Lviv at 24 Staroyevreyska St.

How did you decide to revive the Virmenka coffee shop? Was it your first idea, or did you consider opening a new venue at this location instead?

I’m a Leopolitan and my children live in Lviv, so I do what I can to preserve our city’s historical heritage. For example, during the reconstruction of our Modern Hotel some elements were renewed according to original Austrian technologies, façade of the building which hosts Honest Meat restaurant was restored in joint cooperation with GIZ, the German Society for International Cooperation, while Hrushevsky restaurant works well as both a cinema and exhibition centre.

The revived Virmenka coffee shop is not just a legendary venue where one can drink unique coffee brewed in a cezve on sand, but is also an authentic artistic hub where poets, artists, and musicians frolic with those that partied there 30 years ago for a truly original Leopolitan experience.

Virmenka is quite the experience; for example, guests there can use the “Suspended Coffee”, where you pay for the coffee of a friend or a complete stranger. This can also be done for desserts or liquors and has proven very popular with our guests from Ukraine and Poland. There are also many cultural events at the location, and I should be sure to mention the ‘Lviv’s Holy Garden Republic Anniversary Celebration’, the presentation of Andrey Kurkov’s new book ‘Shengen Story’, and the uniqueto-Ukraine ‘ATO Soldiers Read Fairy Tales for Children’ project.

It’s well-known that the reason that your Modern Hotel is so popular and always booked is because of its convenient location and excellent service. Do you plan to expand work in this area? Yes, we have many plans for the future as the only way to guarantee success in business is to continue to develop. This year we are all set to open another restaurant and we already have plans to open up two new hotels after that. As far as beverages are concerned, we will soon present Leopolitans and guests of the city with new liquors, cognac, and even our very own whiskey. LVIV TODAY | January 2017

EBA INVESTMENT ATTRACTIVENESS INDEX. INVESTOR MOODS IN THE SECOND HALF OF 2016 At the end of 2016, the EBA traditionally asked the directors of the member companies about their Ukrainian business climate vision within the regular expert study – Investment Attractiveness Index. According to this vision in the second half of 2016, the index figure was – 2.85 points (out of 5 possible). For comparison, in January-June 2016 result was almost the same and amounted to – 2.88 points. The index still has not reached a neutral plane - 3 points. As far as there were no significant fluctuations in the index for 2016, it is quite clearly indicates some stabilization in the investment

climate. Obviously, the crisis period expires, the business has adapted to the changing conditions and the unpredictability of doing business and gradually "back to life" with more confident future planning. Most of the respondents (67%) said that it was in the second half of the year unfavorable. In the first half of the year, this percentage was over 11% and amounted to 78%. Another 23% said that the investment climate is neutral – no change. Only 2.2% of respondents said business conditions are very favorable. However, business expectations are worse than they could be. This

is for several reasons. The authorities essentially lost the confidence of business due to lack of fighting corruption and the dominance of personal interests of officials. The pace of reform is slow, not as active and progressive as it should be, according to the business – is, rather, "imitation" of reforms. 29% do not advise colleagues to plan investment projects in January-June 2017, and 12% did not categorically advise this. Instead, 22.5% believe that is still worth investing, and 4.5% of optimists fully support the idea of launching the investment projects in this period.

EBA EVENTS EBA ANNUAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING OF THE WESTERN UKRAINIAN OFFICE

On 9 December EBA Annual General Membership Meeting of the Western Ukrainian Office took place. This time members of the Association met at museum and cultural complex of beer history 'Lvivarnya'. Together with Lviv Regional State Administration, Lviv City Council, and Main Territorial Department of Justice in Lviv Region participants discussed reaching of set in 2016 goals and tried to set up new ones for 2017. Among other, following things were considered: • opportunities for Ukrainian companies to enter European markets; • solution of the problem with queues on the borders; • improvement of investment climate in Lviv region.

The event took place in friendly and festive atmosphere, accompanied by string Advance Quartet and stylish music from DJ Gooch. EBA EVENTS EBA AGRARIAN COMMITTEE MEETING IN IVANO-FRANKIVSK On December 13 regular outdoor meeting of the EBA Western Ukrainian Office Agrarian Committee was held in IvanoFrankivsk on the invitation of EBA member – Danosha. During the meeting, the

participants discussed topical issues of farmers namely, taxes, land rent through long-term contracts and their termination cases, difficulties in communication with local communities, the

media and the authorities. We thank the participants for a productive meeting and willingness to openly share experience in searching the ways of problems solving!

EBA FINAL MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE ON TAX AND ACCOUNTING On December 21 at the EBA Office in Lviv the final meeting of the Committee on Tax and Accounting in 2016 was conducted. Together with ‘Nexia DK’ representatives and Igor Pikhurko, Chairman of the Committee, members had reviewed the

amendments proposed in the Draft Law to the Tax Code of Ukraine of 07.11.2016 №5368 (for improvement of Ukraine’s investment climate) and adopted on 21 December. In addition, participants examined the prospective changes in 2017

Cameral inspection lasts 30 days after filling, documentary – 60 days. There is the Unified Register for VAT refund. Among other hot topics members of the Committee discussed the PrivatBank nationalization. "Uncertainty about the bank had been lasted for a long time (over a year). It has caused some anxiety for clients, especially corporate business. Today this uncertainty had been eliminated, the bank was nationalized. The state guarantees 100% of all returns savings. Q: Dear Mr. Malskyy, I represent the foreign company, which considers the possibility to start up the business in Ukraine. Therefore, at this stage we are making an inquiry on the stages and time frames in order to establish the legal entity in Ukraine. We would highly appreciate, if could briefly describe the procedure of incorporation of the company in Ukraine.

On December 15 at the Kavalier Boutique Hotel, regular meeting of the Customs Committee was held. During the meeting, Oleg Kyryievskyi, the Head of the Customs Committee and Advice Group Partner shared practical experience in resolving customs disputes, including disputes concerning customs value and goods classification. Valuable advice for participants were provided based on the case study from Advice Group dispute resolution team. “It should be noticed that qualified administrative and prejudicial complaint process is a precondition to a successful resolution of customs dispute. Moreover filing additional documents to customs authorities under some circumstances might also benefit to the case result”, – answered Oleh Kyryievskyy on the question on what we should pay attention having customs value and goods classification disputes. Most of foreign investors choose to start up the business in a way of incorporation of a limited liability company which may have one member (single-member company) or several members. Members of a limited liability company can be legal entities or individuals, both residents and non-residents of Ukraine. Please note that only a company with not less than two members can act as sole participant of a single-member company. This means that a company in Ukraine can be established only through including another member if the intended mother company has only one participant. Documents required for the incorporation of the limited liability company generally includes the following: 1. Minutes and charter of the company being incorporated (execution and notarization); 2. Extract from the trade register of members – for legal entities; 3. A Power of attorney for local representative for signing the corresponding documents and to carry out registration procedures; 4. Individual Ukrainian tax payer codes of individuals, if they shall act as the company’s members, as well as for those who will participate in the management of the company; 5. Copies of passports of the individuals who will be the (i) members; (ii) directors; (iii) ultimate beneficiary owners of the company; The UBO is defined as the individual who has the direct or indirect possession of 25% or more of votes in the company. An agent, a nominal shareholder or an intermediary is not the ultimate beneficiary for Ukrainian law purposes. 6. Ownership structure of the founders/members(s) – legal entities – up to individuals owning 10% and more shares or votes, held (directly or indirectly) together with copies of their passports, addresses will be required. Once all the required documents are collected the stages of the incorporation will include the following ones: 1. Registration of the new LLC, assignment of director and obtaining the seal. 2. Opening bank accounts of the new LLC. 3. Preparing and submission of the documents for registration as a VAT payer or in other state authorities (if needed). In case you have an intension to hire the foreigners on the management (or other) positions of the future company please also note that corresponding work permits are to be obtained prior to their employment and after the company is established. In general the whole procedure of preparation of documents and the registration action shall not be more than 1 month, however, depending on the peculiarities of each separate case can take less or more time.

FIDE World Rapid Chess Championships: Double Gold for Ukraine Ukraine won both the men’s and women’s gold medals at the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championships in Doha, Qatar as both Vasyl Ivanchuk of Ternopil region and Lviv’s very-own Anna Muzychuk walked away on top after 3 days of play. The 26-year-old Muzychuk had an even finer weekend, retaining the World Blitz title that she won two years ago in Khanty-Mansiysk, while adding the World Rapid title to her already impressive resume. Anna is the older sister of former FIDE World Chess Champion MariyaMuzychuk, also of Lviv. On the men’s side, five different GMs sat on 10 points before the final round. Ivanchuk won his final game and was crowned champion on additional coefficients beating, among others, world champion Magnus Carlsen. Ivanchuk finished with 11 points after 15 matches, the same as Russian Alexander Grischuk and Carlsen, who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Ivanchuk is a Grandmaster and Ukraine’s strongest chess player since the late 1980s. His long list of accomplishments include winning the Second World Team Championship as part of the USSR team (1989) and the Fifth tournament as part of the Ukrainian team (2001). He has also been crowned European champion (2004), World Chess Olympiad champion (in 1988 and 1990 for the USSR and in 2004 and 2010 for Ukraine), and has twice finished as a finalist at the FIDE World Cup (2001, 2002). He has also been ranked #2 in the world on 3 occasions, most recently in 2007.

Чемпіонаті світу ФІДЕ зі швидких шахів: Все золото України На чемпіонаті світу ФІДЕ зі швидких шахів в м. Доха (Катар) українські спортсмени і спортсменки здобули золоті медалі. За три дні змагань тернополянин Василь Іванчук та львів’янка Ганна Музичук стали чемпіонами. Двадцятишестирічна Музичук захистила свій титул чемпіона світу з бліцу, який вона здобула два роки тому в Ханти-Мансійську, додавши ще й титул чемпіона зі швидких шахів до свого послужного списку. Анна є старшою сестрою колишньої чемпіонки світу з шахів ФІДЕ Марії Музичук, що також мешкає у Львові. Серед чоловіків п'ятеро гросмейстерів набрали по 10 очок перед останнім туром. В. Іванчук виграв свій фінальній матч і став чемпіоном за додатковим підрахунком очок, перемігши, серед інших, чемпіона світу Магнуса Карлсена. В. Іванчук завершив турнір, набравши 11 очок після 15 матчів, так само, як і росіянин А. Грищук і М. Карлсен, які посіли 2 і 3 місце відповідно. Іванчук має звання гросмейстера і є найсильнішим шахістом України з кінця 1980-х років. У його довгому списку досягнень, зокрема, перемога на Другому командному чемпіонаті світу в складі збірної СРСР (1989) і п'ятий турнір в складі збірної України (2001). Він також став чемпіоном Європи (2004), чемпіоном Всесвітньої шахової олімпіади (1988 і 1990 роки ще в СРСР, і в 2004 і 2010 – в незалежній Україні), та двічі виходив у фінал чемпіонату світу ФІДЕ (2001, 2002). Його також тричі визнавали шахістом № 2 у світі, востаннє 2007 року.

Lviv’sHalychyna Sports Palace was home to over 350 Ukrainian rhythmic gymnasts on December 17-18 as part of the Winter Fairy Tale competition that traditionally marks the beginning of the holiday season. Featuring 38 teams from nearly every region of Ukraine – as well as from Poland, Moldova, and Slovenia –Winter Fairy Tale 2016 continued the long tradition of attracting the region’s top rhythmic gymnasts as part of its goal to promote a healthy lifestyle for young athletes. Lviv’sown Yuliya Bekerska took home top honours, while Rosina Nguen and Yaroslava Dukh placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. As the competition took place before St. Nicolaus Day – a special holiday for Ukrainian children – all participants were awarded with memorable prizes and sweets.

Традиційний турнір з ритмічної гімнастики "Зимова казка", що відкриває сезон зимових свят, зібрав понад 350 учасниць у львівському Палаці спорту "Галичина" 17-18 грудня. Загалом виступило 38 команд з багатьох регіонів України, а також з Польщі, Молдови та Словенії. Ці змагання продовжують традицію виступів найкращих гімнасток регіону з метою пропаганди здорового способу життя серед молоді. Львів’янка Юлія Бекерська здобула найвищу нагороду, а Розіна Нгуєн і Ярослава Дух і зайняли 2 і 3 місце відповідно. Оскільки змагання відбувались якраз напередодні дня св. Миколая – особливого свята українських дітей – всі учасники отримали пам'ятні призи та солодкі подарунки.

Dance tournament: Lviv Winter Cup-2016 During December 24-25th Lviv played host to the Lviv Winter Cup-2016 Dance tournament which took place at Halychyna Sport Palace. As event’s organizer came Lviv’s Dance Club Foxtrot which managed to bring together over 300 dance couples from around Ukraine in various age categories. Participants presented dances in each of the Standard and Latin programs. Organisers hope the event promoted how dancing, sport, or other activities, can greatly enhance the physical and mental well-being of participants – regardless of their age, ability, or level of interest.

World Para Nordic Skiing and Biathlon Championships: Debut race for Ukraine Recently added as a World Cup venue, Lviv region’s Western Rehabilitation & Sports Centre in the beautiful Carpathian Mountains hosted the World Para Nordic Skiing & Biathlon Championships from January 12-20. The event brought together over 120 participants from 19 countries from as far away as Brazil, China, the UK, Japan, and Norway. The sports centre was established by the National Committee of Sports for the Disabled and is located in the village of Verhyne, which allows athletes to practice both downhill skiing and the more gruelling cross-country biathlon. The site was chose as it offers a wide variety of different skiing conditions and is located only 10 km from the Polish border. Paralympic sport continues to grow in Ukraine, where the country finished 4th on the medal table in Sochi 2014 and 3rd in Rio 2016. The country also has high hopes for the Pyeongchang Paralympic Winter Games in 2018, and the event in Lviv’s Carpathians acted as a great “warm-up” for that competition.

Кубок світу із зимових видів спорту серед паралімпійців: Дебютні змагання для України На базі Західного реабілітаційно-спортивного центру в с. Верхнє Турківського району Львівської області 12-20 січня пройшли змагання Чемпіонату світу з лижних гонок та біатлону серед паралімпійців. Загалом прибули 120 учасників з 19 країн, зокрема, з Великобританії, Бразилії, Китаю, Японії, Норвегії та інших. Спортивний центр, створений Національним комітетом спорту для людей з обмеженими можливостями, розташований в мальовничих Карпатах і надає спортсменам прекрасні можливості вправлятись на гірських лижах і в змаганнях з біатлону на пересіченій місцевості. Місце було вибране завдяки наявності широкого вибору різних трас для різних видів зимового спорту а також, зокрема, завдяки близькості від польського кордону – всього 10 км. Паралімпійський спорт в Україні постійно розвивається і отримує нову матеріальну базу з кожним роком. Посівши четверте місце за кількістю завойованих медалей в Сочі 2014 року і третє – в Ріо-2016, Українська паралімпійська збірна має великі надії на зимову паралімпіаду в Кореї 2018 року. Ці змагання в українських Карпатах дають нашим спортсменам чудову можливість належно підготуватися до майбутніх змагань на всіх рівнях.

Танцювальний турнір Lviv Winter Cup 2016 відбувся у Львівському Палаці спорту "Галичина" 24–25 грудня. Організатори змагань – Клуб спортивного танцю "Фокстрот" – зібрали понад 300 танцювальних пар з усієї України в різних вікових категоріях. Учасники виконували танці в стандартній та латиноамериканській програмах. Одним з головних завдань турніру було заохочення широкого загалу до мистецтва танцю, як різновиду спорту або діяльності, яка може значно поліпшити фізичне і психічне благополуччя і здоров'я тих, хто ним займається, незалежно від віку, здібностей або рівня інтересу.
