f you’re looking for a dose of inspiration, then you’ve picked up a perfect issue. Our Summer issue is full of stories featuring locals right in our community. Take for instance the incredible woman right on our front cover, Jodi Friedman. She’s a savvy businesswoman in real estate and on the flip side, a Reiki Master Teacher. Clients on both sides of her career rave about her. In fact, when I told my sister who was on our next cover, she said “Oh wow! My stepkids and I have taken Jodi’s healing sessions. She was so intuned to us, we loved it!” That was one of many who have sung her praises. I’ve never had a Reiki session, and with all these walking testimonials, my curiosity is peaked and I think I’m due to try one. Her story, Journey from Real Estate to Reiki Master, is featured on page 56. People To Watch is back this issue featuring four accomplished women in our valley. A diversity of careers is featured through each woman. From UNLV’s Athletics Director, Desiree ReedFrancious, to fashion designer, Rosemarie Macklin of Si Mee Collections, our community is rich with successful women in prominent roles.

I

t is summertime and a time for vacations, recreation and fun. It is also a time to grow as a person, explore new opportunities and celebrate. First, May 1 was Seth and Tammy Grabel’s daughter, Grace, second birthday. What an exciting time for all of us as Grace grows up. While the magazine came out after Mother’s Day, we celebrate Father’s Day with performers, including Seth, speaking about being a father as well as celebrating their own dads. There is our amazing cover story, Jodi Friedman, who has encompassed so much with the business of real estate and the spiritual side. She is an amazing woman and certainly shines brightly in Las Vegas. Speaking of shining brightly, our People to Watch always amazes me. We are featuring the daughter of our People to Watch in the spring issue, who grew up in the business and now works closely with her mother. There is the woman who was working in corporate America who now runs a nonprofit organization to give back. Another woman with an international background shares her love of fashion by designing beautiful cover-ups for swimwear for all women. We are excited to introduce the new University of Nevada, Las Vegas athletics director and the first Hispanic female athletics director at the FBS level. Of course, we love fashion and trends with the latest finds in cookware, makeup, accessories and clothing. Definitely check out Jennifer Florendo’s Trending column and fashions by Eccoci. Chef Oscar Sanchez is an inspiration as chef and businessman who also gives back to the community. Our arts section featuring Art encounter showcases the finest in art. Celebrate Independence Day festivities at the Lake Las Vegas Community with a free event featuring two simultaneous fireworks shows, patriotic music from the Henderson Symphony Orchestra and a DJ and band during the day. The 23rd annual Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade is the valley’s largest Independence Day parade with over 35,000 people expected to attend, 2,500 participants and more than 500 volunteers assisting with parade operations. It features over 70 entries, including traditional floats, giant helium balloons, bands and performing groups, and a variety of kids’ favorite storybook and cartoon characters. The parade begins at the corner of Hillpointe Road and Hills Center Drive in The Trails Village of Summerlin; it travels south on Hills Center Drive toward the Village Center Circle roundabout before heading west on Trailwood Drive. The parade ends at the corner of Trailwood Drive and Spring Gate Lane. New this year: a free shuttle from Downtown Summerlin to the parade start location that will run every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to noon. The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is offering Camp Broadway for students ages 6 to 9 (Shining Stars Camp) and 10 to 17 (Mainstage Camp). The 4th of July annual Pahrump Fireworks display lights up the sky with one of Southern Nevada’s longest fireworks. In the evening bring a blanket or a lawn chair and watch the explosion at Petrack Park. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, visit visitpahrump.com.

Lee Canyon opens for the summer season Friday through Sunday. Activities include scenic chairlift rides, disc golf, hiking, a mini skateboard ramp and patio games. The Bristlecone Bar & Grill will serve food and beverages in the restaurant and on the patio. Scenic chairlift rides on the Sherwood lift offer sweeping views of Lee Canyon. Lee Canyon’s 18-hole disc golf course starts at 9,300 feet in elevation and leads players on a hike down through the resort’s mountain terrain to each hole. Players get to the top of the course by riding the chairlift or hiking for roughly 40 minutes. With temperatures roughly 20 degrees cooler than in the Las Vegas Valley, Lee Canyon is a summer exercise spot for local and visiting fitness enthusiasts for running, hiking and mountain biking on the nearby Bristlecone Trail. TERRY FATOR The VOICE of Entertainment Celebrates 8 years in Las Vegas By Debbie Hall

coming performers pursue their career in ventriloquism. Fator will be giving away two scholarships to the contestants that showcase their best ventriloquist and puppeteering skills.

erry Fator recently celebrated his eighth anniversary at the Mirage by introducing a fully revamped production featuring his most beloved characters including Winston the Impersonating Turtle, the world’s greatest Elvis impersonator Maynard Tompkins, Vikki the Cougar, Fernando V. Francisco, Emma Taylor and President Donald Trump. He added “guest” puppet character Sir Elton John. The new show dubbed “Terry Fator Tonight” takes on the personality of a late night talk show in its theme. About the changing of the entertainment scene on the Las Vegas Strip, Fator stated, “I hope with the new direction that entertainment focuses on talent. I feel sometimes we get lost in spectacle. It is about the people who are entertaining. For example, The Rat Pack—Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin—got on stage, sang songs, made people laugh and entertained their audience. They didn’t need explosions or lasers. I want to entertain my audience so they want to keep coming back.” Fator combines his talents of singer, comedian, ventriloquist and celebrity impressionist. His unique talent of celebrity impressions sung using ventriloquism is amazing as he belts out notes like Adele and Etta James, croons like Tony Bennett, entices like LMFAO and serenades like Aaron Neville. However, Fator always works on new voices and new ways to showcase his gifts to keep his show new and fresh.

To qualify for the Clinton Detweiler Scholarship, contestants must submit a one-minute video showcasing their best ventriloquist skills as well as a short written response answering why they should be chosen to attend the 2017 Vent Haven Convention. All entries must be received no later than May 26. Fator himself will be making the decision on the finalists, and who are awarded the scholarships. Winners will be announced in June. In 2007, Terry Fator won Season 2 of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and was offered a multi-million dollar contract to perform at The Mirage. Last year, it was announced that his contract had been extended to 2021. After 25 years of performing at county fairs and venues across the country, winning “AGT” at age 42 catapulted him into the upper echelon of entertainers, landing him at No. 3 on Forbes’ list of the top-earning comics behind Jerry Seinfeld and Kevin Hart in 2015. Fator has also continued to show his support and appreciation for aspiring ventriloquists by creating the Clinton Detweiler Scholarship, a scholarship that helps up-and-

Performers juggle entertainment with fatherhood By Debbie Hall

P

erformers and others who work in show business love to entertain. It is in their DNA to sing, dance, act, create magic and make people laugh or cry. They also love their families and if they are dads, Father’s Day on June 18 is even more special. Once these performers get off stage, they are sons and daughters as well as parents and one can describe what they all feel: love.

Grabel realizes that Grace will emulate him, and he is striving to demonstrate honesty, integrity and compassion through his actions. He is proud to strive to be the best person he can be and share that with Grace.

Luke Broadlick, choreographer and performer in “Magic Mike Live” now playing at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, is a husband and father off stage. “Love doesn’t have a time or a schedule. So if I can show as much love as possible to every moment I have with my wife, my children or my career I can balance it all out,” he explained.

Seth Grabel is many things to many people including an illusionist, magician, acrobat and actor with comedic overtones. As a performer, Grabel is also finding ways to continually astound and amaze his audience. As a person, he is incorporating his personal philosophy to share with others. As Grabel tells everyone, “transform your reality … define your illusion.” But when it comes to his 2-year-old daughter Grace, she is the embodiment of love. “She is the most amazing experience I have ever had and it is so gratifying,” he said. “She is the sweetest, most charming little girl and she teaches us how to be better people.”

As for his own father, “My dad was a businessman. He woke up at 6 a.m. every morning and worked hard for his family. My life is so different. I am up at all hours and I wonder if I am being as good of a dad as my father. But I love her and I want her to be happy and do anything she wants.”

“Now that my family and I are here together in Las Vegas things are actually a lot easier than I’ve known since my little boy was born. Being a performer, I’m quite used to being away from home most of the time and it’s been that way for


the past three years, but now I get to go home to my wife and son every night thanks to our Las Vegas residency. Even though there are times that our schedule may cause a few difficulties, I’m very lucky to have a wonderfully understanding wife and a few great friends around me to help ease the load sometimes. When I get home after work I often find it difficult to wind down and go to sleep so when my son comes in at 5:30 a.m. and wants me up to climb an imaginary Mount Everest it’s not too easy, I can tell you.” But Williams balances the day with a nap and would not give up those special times. Jennifer Romas is the producer, creator, choreographer and star of “Sexxy,” the topless revue in the Westgate Cabaret at Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. While some women might not want to share with their father what they do, Romas is very grateful for her father’s continuing support. “My father is huge part of my life and career,” Romas said. “I am an only child and my dad has influenced my life in many, many ways. He has always been there for me. He is my cheerleader, teaching and training me. My family is very important to me.” Romas’ father was a wrestler in high school and college and was a runner up for the Olympic team. He did not make the Olympic team but still showed his daughter his dedication, which she embraces in her own career as an athlete and dancer.

Marc D. Donovan is an actor, singer and voiceover artist who portrayed Sam Phillips in “Million Dollar Quartet” during its Las Vegas run. Donovan took this role and relocated to Vegas in 2013 with his wife, seeing this as an opportunity to start a family. After a year and half of attempting to have a baby, they sought another path.

Attempting to adopt through the foster care system has, according to Donovan, “become more difficult that we thought it would be. It is finally starting to take shape after an emotional roller coaster ride so it has come full circle in a way for me,” he said. “One chapter of portraying a man who was like a father to these legends has come to a close and I am now moving on to the next chapter in my ever changing family including continuing as dad to Oscar.”

Oscar is the baby boy they brought home nearly two years ago from the hospital as a foster child and on April 13 officially adopted him. “He is an amazing little man, and we feel so lucky to have the privilege of watching him grow up.” It was not their first placement and Donovan and his wife had to relinquish their first foster child, a girl, whom they brought home at four days old. A great aunt resurfaced and the child, then seven months old, was given to the relative to be raised.

“We almost gave up, but we tried again with Oscar,” and this Father’s Day they are celebrating being his forever family. There is also more good news—Oscar is going to be a big brother. Donovan’s wife is due July 12. Sergii Matviienko, one of the four men of Atlantis team of gymnasts performing in the show “Absinthe” at Caesars Palace, is from Kiev, Ukraine. Matviienko is father to a young son and is actually working with him to see if he will follow in his father’s career path. “Since I work at night, I can spend time with my son. We go to the park, we bicycle together and there is so much we do. ublicity guru Michelle St. Angelo inspires everyone with her community dedication as a new member of United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council. United Way: Tell us a little bit about your background. Michelle St. Angelo: I grew up in New York City just outside of Manhattan on Long Island. As a kid, I loved school. I was an A student and very involved in extracurricular activities. I ventured outside of the East Coast for college, seeking adventure in the Midwest at Indiana University (super adventurous, right!), where I studied English literature, psychology and dance. I then moved to Las Vegas and worked in entertainment and hospitality as a PR coordinator at a top local agency. I’m still doing the work I love 13 years later, now for Allied Integrated Marketing. In addition to my main career, I’m also a certified yoga instructor and trained leadership and life coach. In my (extremely limited) spare time, I love to be active and explore. Last year I hiked, biked and kayaked across Thailand, and this year I’m going to a yoga retreat in Bali. UW: Describe a typical day in the life of Michelle. MSA: There is no typical day in the life of a working woman in the marketing industry. That’s what I love about it. As vice president of publicity for Allied Integrated Marketing, I oversee specialized hospitality and lifestyle accounts locally, California and on the East Coast. I spent most of my day developing ideas to make a difference in public relations campaigns for current and prospective clients

and reporting on our team’s progress. After work hours, I’m either networking at events, coaching individuals from my home office, walking my dog, cooking dinner or spending time with friends and family. A little evening down time (read: a hot bubble bath with a glass of wine) is also a must before getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep and starting all over again the next day! UW: Why did you get involved with United Way and WLC? MSA: In my first PR job, I had the pleasure of working with United Way as their account representative. I spent several years of my career learning about the difference UWSN made for this community, and I saw firsthand its powerful impact. I was in my early 20s and I remember always admiring the WLC— especially its signature suit drive event, which I helped launch—and promising one day I’d join this league of incredible ladies. Since I’ve joined, I’ve had some fun times, like the WLC Luncheon Fashion Show in March. I’m super petite, 4-feet and 10-inches, so I never in a million years would have thought of myself as a model. I was shocked and delighted when they asked me to be in the fashion show. It was really a fun way to get to know my fellow WLC members, get dressed up and support this incredible cause. UW: Do you have any advice, words of wisdom or messages for the women of Las Vegas? MSA: I’m continually inspired by the women in this community. They’re beautiful, capable and fearless. So, I say keep doing what you’re doing, ladies!

ART ENCOUNTER: Embracing art through the ages by Debbie Hall

Art provokes thought. Some of the art I encounter makes me smile, or evokes emotion. It is something to be enjoyed every day. - Rod Maly

n September, Art encounter will have been a part of the world of art, not just in Las Vegas, but also globally for 25 years. Rod Maly, founder and owner, has continually transformed the gallery and business in keeping with the economy and technology along with his contributions in the art world. It was 500 years in the making but on Jan. 19, 2012 the only authenticated Leonardo da Vinci sculpture, “Horse and Rider,” was revealed in Las Vegas by Rod, who now owns the piece. It is the only sculpture known to exist from the hand of Leonardo da Vinci. Rod’s son, Brett Maly, who is the president of Art encounter and respected appraiser in the art world, admitted that he chuckled when told by one of his staff that someone was calling to speak to him about a Leonardo da Vinci piece he owned. After realizing the caller was legitimate, Maly involved his father, Rod. The owner came from Indianapolis to work with Rod and Brett. “We were skeptical for about two years, but after meeting with all of the experts and doing due diligence, it was authenticated,” Rod said. Due to the owner’s failing health, Rod and his partner Jim Petty purchased the piece. Recently, the sculpture was displayed in Milan, Italy, where da Vinci created most of his work and its reception was overwhelming. Brett is also known as the fine art appraiser on the television show, “Pawn Stars” on the History channel. ances, consultations and questions about finding art, he has written a book, “The Pocket Picker for Fine Art.” “This manual is designed to slip into a pocket or purse when checking out art in thrift stores or estate sales. I felt if someone had a guide, they could check out if one kind of art or print is more valuable than another kind. This was truly a labor of love,” Brett said. The book is available for purchase at artencounter.com. As for “Pawn Stars,” one of Brett’s favorite memories was one of his first appearances on the show. It was at the beginning of the series when the cast regulars were frequently working the floor. Chumlee was stacking a pyramid of mugs and accidentally knocked them over. The Old Man yelled at him and Brett realized that they really acted the way the series portrayed them. Rod has always been a collector of art and after selling his successful computer business based in Dallas in 1991, he and his wife Kristine decided to move to Las Vegas. In 1992, they opened Art encounter, the largest gallery in Las Vegas. The gallery focused on emerging artists to introduce them to the public. “It was a lot of fun working with the artists and that was a miraculous time for us. We developed great relationships with the artists as well as the customers,” he explained. One of those emerging artists was Jennifer Main, who was a junior at the Las Vegas Academy when she brought some of her work to Rod. Now living in Los Angeles, Art encounter still represents her and sells her artwork. “Jennifer brought artwork that was not only artistically pleasing but it encompassed a young girl’s emotions that came through in her artwork. You got a sense of her being. Here was a young woman trying to find herself in the world and expressing her feelings and psyche through her art,” Rod explained.

The facility is now located off-Strip with a viewing room, conference area and the ability to work with any buyers to find the piece and artist they want to acquire. Art encounter offers three divisions including fine art sales, appraisal services headed by Brett and conservation framing. Most important is their reputation. “We have been here for 25 years. We pride ourselves on integrity. Everyone knows when they purchase art from us, it is real and we can be trusted,” Rod stated.

With the gallery for 25 years, Brett was a freshman in college in Texas for radio, television and film with a goal to become a filmmaker when his father sold the computer business. “When my mom and dad told me they were moving to Las Vegas, I wanted to move with them.” While he admits he was not originally planning on becoming an art appraiser, he so enjoyed working at the gallery that he decided to finish his degree in communications at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and go into art. The original gallery, located on Spring Mountain Road, measured over 13,000 square feet. Rod also owned and operated the largest art gallery in Texas, a gallery in the Fashion Show mall and in 2015, opened a gallery in The Forum Shops in Caesars before closing all retail locations. “In 2017, we have changed our business model,” he said. “We deal mostly with invest-

CHEF OSCAR SANCHEZ Bringing a global cuisine to Las Vegas

He has worked in every aspect in the restaurant business including as an executive chef and restaurateur. His new venture is Oscar Catering.

Recently married with a blended family of six children, he wants to educate as many people as possible on a healthier dining lifestyle, especially children. He has a goal to lecture at schools to help guide children.

Born and raised in a small town in Colombia, South America, Chef Sanchez’s sister helped him move to the United States for the chance of a better life. He did not speak English and started his culinary career as a dishwasher. But he was very driven with tons of ambition, wanting to learn everything he could from people that he admired. He became a selftaught chef who wanted to express his love of food by obtaining knowledge of international cuisine. “In Las Vegas, we have people who travel here from around the world,” he explained. “We have also have people living here who come from other countries. I want to offer any cuisine, especially when I am catering a party or special event.” This is one of his goals for the success of his new company. His first career choice was to become a pilot in the Air Force but due to his eyesight was unable to pursue that dream. Chef Sanchez

thought about the delicious meals prepared by his grandmother and mother and decided to become a chef. Following his dreams, he was hired at the Bellagio to assist the chefs in food preparation. Chef Sanchez became the head chef at the Suncoast Hotel and Casino and worked there for five years. There was a position at Caesars Palace and then a promotion as Executive Chef at the Renaissance Las Vegas Hotel where he worked for four years. Chef Sanchez mastered Spanish cuisine and created many new recipes, helping the venue to be ranked as No. 8 as best cuisine in a city with thousands of places to eat. “I decided to open my own place after my

TECOPA TIME FOR A RELAXING ROAD TRIP

W

hile the bright lights, glitz and glamour of Las Vegas attracts over 42 million visitors a year, there is more to Southern Nevada and surrounding areas. Historic highways and rural towns offer a chance to explore the southwest. It is just not desert terrain either, but mountains, rivers and an incredible night sky. Whether into hiking, photography and other outdoor activities or indoor fun, a road trip to Tecopa will offer relaxation and a new perspective. Part of the fun of a road trip is stopping at attractions along the way that might go unnoticed. Surrounded by desert landscape and history, roads to and from Las Vegas are also pathways to history and nature enclaves. Whether a registered historic place or centuries-old farm, these roadside attractions will add to the spirit of the trip as well as give a different perspective of the southwest. Tecopa, California is 82 miles west of Las Vegas and the drive encompasses a different

By Debbie Hall landscape of the high desert close to Death Valley. This is the chance to see different plants, especially flowering cacti, and one can view the Kingston Mountain Range in bloom. On the way to Tecopa, Cactus Joe’s Las Vegas Nursery is 25 miles southwest of Las Vegas in the small town of Blue Diamond, Nevada. The cactus nursery and Asian and Western-themed gardens features cacti, agave, succulents, ocotillo and yucca as well as a Joshua Tree forest, Petrified Forest and labyrinth. There is also a rock and gift shop, southwestern pottery land and wedding chapel. Set up to view, as well as purchase, is concrete statues, metal yard art, unique wooden patio furniture, decorative rainbow glass, rocks, gems and minerals. There is an actual Cactus Joe who is an expert in horticulture and surrounding native Nevada flora and fauna. Continuing to Tecopa, the China Ranch Date Farm & Bakery is on the way and with its underground water; the date trees are blossoming and heavy with fruit. The family owned and operated date farm features date palms, cottonwoods and willows with a stream that runs through the area surrounding the farm. There are 10 varieties of dates with products such as cakes, muffins and bread offered for sale. The ranch has been in existence since the 1850s and the first crop of dates was planted in the 1920s. A small museum was opened onsite in 2009 exhibiting the history of the area along with a gift shop. Once in Tecopa, rest, relax and revitalize at Tecopa Hot Springs Resort located approximately two miles off State Highway 127. With a campground, motel and cabins, natural hot spring water is piped into soaking tubs,

silky ancient mineral waters heated by mother earth. There is 24-hour access with two private soaking tubs located in the bathhouse with showers for men and women. ue Pemberton is an international artistic director, master colorist and world traveler.

She is listed as one of 50 in the book, “Top 50 Hairstylists” by Rick Morton, ranked in the top 40 in the world for platform artists and No. 14 in the world for colorists by BE magazine. Pemberton is accomplished in color chemistry, practical and advanced application, techniques, salon artistry and fashion while also maintaining a keen sense of real world wearability and practical application. Her most outstanding achievements are in color, where she is active as an expert, an artist, leader, mentor and an inspiration among her peers in the industry. Born and raised in a small town in the United Kingdom, she was a cosmetologist by trade at age 16 but continued her studies. “As a young artist I was extremely shy. I had to learn how to talk to clients. By 18, I was fully qualified as a cosmetologist,” she told Las Vegas Woman magazine.

Las Vegas Woman magazine: Why did you want to move to the United States? Sue Pemberton: At 16, my grandma and I toured on a Greyhound motorcoach for three weeks. I knew then I wanted to come back to America. At 21, I sold my Spitfire sports car for 1,000 pounds, bought a ticket to Los Angeles and with $600 dollars in my pocket and a suitcase. LVW: What was your life like in the United States? SP: My first job was at a beauty supply store; I walked in, the shelves were dusty and the store in disarray. I told the owner he needed help and had to hire me. He told me I was cheeky and I replied, “of course I am” so he hired me. I also worked at a health club where they liked my accent and me. I was the receptionist. After awhile, I got my cosmetology license and once I had that, the owner of the supply store made me a workstation, which allowed him to carry professional products while I built my clientele. Realizing I needed more, I moved to Santa Monica [California]. Working at Salon, Ravello, my station was on a platform like a stage. The manufacturer I worked for helped grow my career, and along with my hard work, I became the international artistic director and master colorist. Up until recently, I have traveled the world educating artists. LVW: What countries and continents have you traveled to for education? SP: South America, Egypt, Asia, South Africa, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It would be easier if I told you where I have not been. LVW: What brought you to Las Vegas? SP: The economy. I moved here almost 14 years ago. Traveling all the time, I was never home and living in California is expensive so it made sense. LVW: What are some of your awards?

SP: In the cosmetology world, the North American Hairdressing Award is the Oscar in our field. I’ve been nominated eight times and won two times, 2007 and 2013. The nominations always outweigh the wins, you have to walk into this with a realistic mindset, and my slogan is, “ Life is not about winning or losing, life is about passion!” In 2014 I received the Intercoiffure Award, The ‘Icons of Color.” There were only six of us in the world to receive this award including Gina Khan, Kris Sorbie, Sonya Dove, Beth Minardi and Roy Peters. LVW: What are your future plans? SP: Rather than work for a specific manufacturer, I am going to do it on my own. This allows me to work with several companies. I’ve relaunched Sue Pemberton Color Academy (suepemberton.com). Education is what drives me and I love it. I have put together an education program called the Artistic Journey. It enables the artist to understand the steps it takes to achieve the end result of a color. The classes I offer can be broken down and is tailored to the needs of the group. EYES, MAKEUP AND BUGS Avoiding problems... Bugs in our eyelashes! By Dr. Cynthia Payne

es, it can happen. Everyone has bacteria and mites living on the skin and this is usually a beneficial relationship but when overpopulation occurs, there is a problem. When they are able to overpopulate in the eyelashes and eyelid margins, eyes become red, itchy, irritated and dry, causing styes, flaking around the lashes, lash dropout and, in severe cases, contribute to eyelid oil gland dropout, which is irreversible. As a person ages, the skin around the eyes becomes more lax (wrinkles) and with the warmth and moisture from the eye creates a great environment for bacteria and mites to live and overpopulate. The mite (Demodex) population also increases when a person gets older. Soap stings, so many people, es-

pecially women, are not cleaning the eyelid margins and eyelashes close to the base of the lashes very well. When one does not wash off eye makeup at night, bacteria and mites are being fed. It is important to not only take off makeup at night but to clean brushes and replace makeup as required. It is hard to look your best with flaky crusties at the lash line. Not removing mascara can also cause eyelashes to become dry, brittle and break off and shed faster. There are a couple of options for cleaning the eyelid and eyelashes. Traditionally, I have instructed patients to use baby shampoo with warm water and scrub the eyelid margin and eyelashes. here are certain points during your career that you will need to step back and re-examine where you are going and what you are looking for. Just like seasons during the year, there are different seasons in your life. Life being as unpredictable as it is can sometimes catch you off guard and the goals you had set for yourself throughout your dream career path may not be working anymore. Here are five key times in your life to re-examine where you want to be. One to Three Years After College/High School

Sometimes you major just to major, other times you know your path. Either way, once the books are put away and it’s time to live in the real world you have to figure out what the real world is to you. Does it mean moving away for a dream job? Taking an internship? Now is the time for you to take a chance and see where the world will take you.

On Your 29th Birthday

You are five to seven years into your career, things may be going great, but there are some things on the horizon that you need to prepare for. Whether it be your personal values, a family you want to start or the inevitable glass ceiling you are going to have to conquer in the corporate world.

Your 35th Birthday, Or The First Promotion You Were Passed Over For in Your 30s

This is a good midway point in your career. You’ve had time to grow and make mistakes. Now it’s time to get down to

Retirement. At some point in your career, there will be a switch that happens. You will start to feel complete in the sense of your career, and you may feel a pull to do other things with your talents besides corporate work. Your finances are sound; you feel that your time in the workplace is coming to an end. When this happens, be honest with what a retirement would look like for you. Will you volunteer? Travel? Take on a less stressful and non-paying job just to get out of the house? When you’ve put your time in, figure out what you want out of time moving forward. No matter when you check in on yourself, know that it is okay to change your path. Life is made with zigs and zags, a straight line never happens. Being a successful corporate working woman one day and then wanting to stay home to raise your family the next is ok. Working in a nonprofit only to realize you like the idea of working in a corporate setting is okay too. It is your path and you only need to please yourself.

UMBILICAL STEM CELL THERAPY EQUALS REGENERATIVE MEDICINE By Dr. Michael Mall

U

mbilical cord derived stem cells have been demonstrated to be the most potent type of stem in terms of regenerating human cells and reversing disease states in over 100 different conditions including Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Osteoarthritis, traumatic brain injuries, neuropathies, diabetes, Parkinsons disease, dementia and stroke injury. The stem cells do not come from any embryonic tissue from unborn fetuses but instead they do come from the umbilical cords, not paid for, after passing the FDA tissue bank screening form, and are the only FDA-approved stem cell product. Although the umbilical cord stem cell product is FDA approved, they are not specifically FDA approved for any specific indication. There are well over 200,000 studies documenting the benefits of stem cell therapy for a variety of medical diseases and over 20,000 studies specifically studying umbilical cord stem cells. Doctors can administer umbilical cord stem cells to patients that have conditions being studied with umbilical cord cells but not make claims of treating that particular condition with stem cells to be FDA compliant. Doctors can only point to the benefits of umbilical cord stem cells achieved in an overwhelming number of studies completed showing the benefits. There are three types of stem cells currently being used: Umbilical cord derived, a person’s adipose (fat) derived and a person’s own bone

marrow derived. Only umbilical cord derived is FDA approved and anyone can receive them since there are no HLA typing markers on these cells. If a person undergoes the procedure to harvest their own stem cells (bone marrow or fat derived), only that person can receive those stem cells back. Also, if a person undergoes a procedure to harvest his or her stem cells, those cells are the same age as the person. Umbilical cord derived stem cells are easy to administer and are essentially zero years old.

The stem cells do not come from any embryonic tissue from unborn fetuses but instead they do come from the umbilical cords... How do they work? The umbilical cord stem cells once introduced into the body through an IV are drawn to areas of damage, injury, inflammation and degeneration by signals given off from those damaged and inflamed tissues. The stem cells set up immunomodulary centers wherever there is damaged tissue in order to recruit cells to repair damage, as well as produce antiinflammatory and healing peptides and proteins to help in the regeneration of tissue. IV, and those cells continue to double every 28 hours to a maximum of sixty-five times producing approximately 600 septillion cells that secrete healing immunomodulary proteins and incorporate themselves into the regenerating tissue. Since these umbilical cord stem cells cross the blood brain barrier, they can regenerate brain and nerve tissues. These umbilical cord cells also regenerate cartilage, bone, connective tissue, muscle, organ tissue and skin. The full effects of regenerating damaged and inflamed tissues can take up to six months to accomplish. It is interesting to note that stem cells from bone marrow have been used in orthopedic and spine surgeries for over twenty years with great success in improving surgical outcomes. W

omen have been fighting for equal rights as long as history can record the battle. However, there are plenty of successful and independent women in Las Vegas, and as they gain financial and emotional independence from men, their sexuality begins to resemble what has traditionally been seen as more male in its expression than traditionally female. One aspect is the phenomenon of older women taking on younger male lovers, once seen only as the territory of older men with younger women. It used to be that older women coupling with younger men remained hidden. Now cougars may get a wry smile, but it is more accepted today. The media really wants to pay attention to Demi Moore and Madonna, the 50-something women with the 20and 30-something man. In the retirement community, the need for companionship and the comfort of love continues after the loss of a long-term partner. Women still outlive men, so its not uncommon for seniors to be in relationships where an older woman enjoys the company of a man who is younger than her, but are really peers in other ways. So what’s the truth? In reality, some prejudices do play out in fact but sometimes its important to realize that these can also be healthy, loving relationships.

Often the high sex drive of the younger man may be just right for the older woman who is biologically more interested in sex for pleasure, rather than for procreation. Just as is true for men, after a divorce, dating someone younger can be invigorating for a woman, making her feel young again after the trauma of divorce. The psychology behind this is that many times after divorce, the newly free person will go back emotionally to the age they were when they last dated, and be a better match emotionally for a younger partner. Some women are very clear that they really want to date a younger man so that they can have the kind of dominance and control in relationships that allows them to feel more secure. There may be other emotional challenges: the younger man’s difference in maturity may be a hindrance to socializing with the peers of the older woman; there are issues of shared experience, like the music or television shows or political history that isn’t shared in the relationship. Sometimes none of these considerations matter at all, and the younger man is simply attracted to older women and always has been. This is a natural category of sexual type, and those relationships can last until the death of either partner, which isn’t always the older woman. SELF DEFENSE FOR WOMEN IMPORTANT CHOICES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR PROTECTION By Debbie Hall

A

ccording to statistics released by the FBI, violent crime has increased in 2016 with a 6.3 percent increase in urban areas such as Las Vegas. It can be a scary world, but there are precautions and training for women as well as decisions and responsibilities for personal protection. Andeen Rose, owner/operator of ADD Hair & Make Up, recently obtained a concealed carry permit to carry a firearm at all times. Rose works with celebrities and big production shows which means she works all hours of the day and night. “I felt I needed more protection,” she stated. “Sometimes at night, I walk in parking lots with no lights, and my husband also works odd hours, so I decided it was time to take this step to protect myself.” While she took her training at another location she is organizing a class for woman through the 1 Lucky Gal Networking Group. “I learned so much in my class. We discussed the ramifications of owning a gun and the fact that if you pull out your gun, you need to be prepared to shoot to kill, not just wound. But we were also trained to not be the aggressor; that pulling a gun is not the answer,” she explained. There is also the reality that if anyone shoots someone else, they are held liable, and will be taken to jail while the case is investigated. The biggest takeaway for Rose was to keep a business card of a criminal defense attorney in a wallet, NOT stored in a device. The police will allow a business card to be retrieved but will not hand over a phone or other device. While she has always had her own gun, it was her husband who maintained the firearms. After a few mishaps in class, Rose now maintains her own weapons because gun safety is imperative and the gun owner is solely responsible. Stephanie Costello is the lead firearms instructor with Archangel Training Solutions in partnership with The Range 702 and state of Nevada certified carry con-

cealed weapons instructor. According to Costello, “Women are the fastest growing segment in the industry for firearms. I believe there is an element of confidence to shoot and operate a gun safely and effectively.” She stated that with proper training and knowledge of the laws, women can be responsible gun owners while protecting themselves. Costello urges all women to first take an introductory class, which will discuss different firearms, fundamentals of marksmanship, laws and responsibilities of gun ownership. After that class, women can make the best choices for themselves and The Range 702 also offers classes for women only. Patti Stewart, Pearl Director for Damsels in Defense, offers products and services dedicated to equipping, empowering and educating women with selfdefense tools. Stewart is an internationally certified self-defense instructor who emphasizes that “women need to always be aware of their surroundings. People are totally focused on their phones. The first thing I teach is that to be really be aware of everyone and everything and if there is something that doesn’t feel right, a woman’s intuition is always right.” Always carry something when walking to a car, whether a pen, keys, stun gun or pepper spray, she advises. Even if one has a purse and grocery bags in one hand and surrounded by her children, still keep one hand free because if a woman is attacked, she will be pushed to the ground in four seconds. While unfortunate that women must make precautions for safety, it is everyone’s responsibility and with the right training, can protect oneself and their family.

hen someone is able to realize the depth of their spectacular spiritual gifts, they can create an extraordinary life filled with divine creative joy! From an early age, Jodi Friedman knew that she had a special gift to love people deeply by how she was able to inspire them.

Jodi described the experience as a softening of the heart; a surrendering of everything she had known up until that point. Her senses really expanded when she found Reiki Healing and Energy Balancing. Reiki means “Universal Life Force Energy” and out of the many modalities she has studied, this one truly resonates with her.

At certain times in people’s lives they come to a fork in the road, and for Jodi that fork changed the direction of her life and elevated her dreams in an unexpected way. When her daughter was 8 years old, Jodi experienced a spiritual awakening that changed everything in her world. She received what some have experienced as a “Night of the Soul Awakening,” which could be considered a rebirth of their most natural and carefree potential. As an adult, this event was the precursor of her intentional spiritual journey into herself. She had seen glimpses of this path at the age of five with a brain injury in a car accident and later while she was studying at Arizona State University. There she began to receive and write spiritual poetry through automatic writing with one movement of the pen; greatly expanding her awareness of the world around her. It wasn’t until her mid 30s that due to certain life adversities, Jodi found herself surrounded by lightworkers and energy healers.

Her path began with a loving, hardworking furniture family from the Midwest where she embraced their values. The family moved to Las Vegas in search of a warmer climate and business opportunities in the early 1970s. As a child, Jodi’s free-spirited, pied-piper-like imagination helped her to persuade her friends to live adventurously in a carefree independent way. Later in life, her genuine love for people made it easy for her to create two unlikely sideby-side careers as she embraced her natural ability to sell, just like her father did. Her dad Leon worked many years in the retail and furniture businesses and became one of the co-owners of Walker Furniture. Jodi’s mother Norma showed her how to become a strong and independent thinker. It wasn’t until much later in her life that Jodi would understand her life’s true purpose ... to become a facilitator of global healing in the framework of mind, body and spirit through healing from the inside out.

After receiving a Bachelor of Science in special education from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, Jodi found selling real estate a fascinating way to make a living in 1983 in Las Vegas. Despite the slow appreciation of homes and higher interest rates throughout the 1980s and 1990s, she earned a good income for herself while raising her daughter Leya. At that same time she owned a small independent real estate company, Golden Image Realty, for eight years. Finding harmony for her clients was always her goal, using excellent communication systems she plugged into and her inspiring personal development skills. Over the span of a 34-year career, Jodi successfully negotiated for her clients in the ever-changing Southern Nevada market and persevered through the intense bubble and crash of 2006 to 2010. Her natural intuitive ability to understand her clients’ emotional needs made her a

valuable asset to them as she sold many homes in that volatile and chaotic market. One of Jodi’s favorite opportunities was as a manager for Century 21 Advantage Gold; holding the position of director of agent training for 800 agents. This was in addition to selling homes on weekends. Jodi learned to move and shake with the best of the best and never looked back. She embraced her certification as Reiki Master in 1998 and developed her abilities at a time when most people around her weren’t comfortable to talk about the unseen world of healing. As a Reiki Master Teacher, Jodi has given close to 1000 healing sessions since she began working with people in 1996. In 2011, she worked at a Wellness Center (Ganesha Center) for two years and then opened her own spiritual healing center called Intentional Healings. Teaching Reiki certifications and giving Reiki attunements was something she cherished with many students. Weekly Reiki Shares became a large community event that Jodi facilitated where people could look forward to their continuous growth. Facilitating other’s healing, Jodi taught people to open their spiritual intuitive abilities in order to heal on the inner levels. At times, there would be three to four massage tables set up so that 35 people could practice their skills together. Besides Reiki, Jodi taught classes on Manifesting Goals & Dreams, How to Release and Clear Dissonant Energy in the Home & Office Place, and How to Meditate. With 15 or more different modalities in her toolbox, Jodi offered a smorgasbord of healing tools to support clients that came to her for private healing. She offered classes taught by other teachers in her center and healing events including a John of God Crystal Healing Bed that traveled cross-country. Years of letting go of difficult negative emotions through an inner release process of her own pain, Jodi became a clear channel

for healing core wounds. She is a student of Transcendental Meditation and knows how to work through difficult situations from 20 years of doing her own inner healing work. Spiritual wisdom was passed on through her teachers: Dr Wayne Dyer, Neale Donald Walsch, Don Miguel Ruiz and others. “I’ve learned what the Creator’s definition of unconditional love is; I’ve experienced it deeply with John of God in Brazil, while I was in Bali taking a course in Liberation Breathing with Sondra Ray and most currently every day now as I accept the love of God more and more into my heart,” she explained. As a master connector, she understands how to manifest joy by transmuting and transforming energy into love through her intention. She thoughtfully teaches others how to meditate in professional settings such as Keller Williams Realty Southwest in Las Vegas and at The Salt Room in Summerlin and is soon to be involved with the healing

Gigi Roundtree Common Tree

T

hroughout her life, Gigi Roundtree has always felt a connection with people. She was raised in a military family that always loved and respected one another. Roundtree always wanted to help and make a difference in her community. Her parents and sisters have inspired Roundtree by “making me the person I am today.” In 2016, Roundtree realized she wanted to pursue a different passion and started Common Tree, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of the disenfranchised and helping them make a new start in life, by providing resources. With the support of her family, Roundtree left her job as an operations manager and became the founder and president of Common Tree. “I saw the beauty in our community, and it’s people and I considered what can I do to support them, rather than compete. Together, we can truly make a difference for those facing challenging circumstances, through fundraising, community outreach and overall awareness. We can continue to grow as a community that gives, cherishes and loves every-

one who is in need. The more people willing to help our community grow into something beautiful, the stronger we can all be in becoming a deeply-rooted community,” she explained. “The organization raises funds to support their activities, raises the visibility of the need to support these members of the community with the general public, and coordinates efforts to deliver goods and services such as mentorship, school supplies, food, clothing and hygiene kits. At Common Tree, we strive to bring back the idea of a community purpose.” Her family, including her son Elijah and daughter Brianna, has impacted her. “Along with my husband Will and my amazing board members, I know they will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.” The family participates with Roundtree and they understand that life can present obstacles for anyone, including them. Common Tree, which symbolizes roots in the community and connection with everyone, currently works to provide essential goods to the impoverished population of Las Vegas. The mission is that

no one should have to be hungry or go without his or her most basic needs. The homeless population is an unfortunate rising statistic, and children are affected on a daily basis. Through its efforts, its goal is to support the less fortunate and raise awareness for the entire homeless population in our communities. Common Tree has also adopted the students of Helen Marie Smith Elementary School supporting students’ needs and bringing smiles to their faces. “This is a small school located on the west side and I felt there was a strong need with mentorship by me,” she explained. Roundtree has big goals and is working towards accomplishing them. R

osemarie Macklin has always felt that confidence played a huge role in her fashion style. The idea behind her beach cover-up brand Si Mee Collections (pronounced See Me) is that confidence and clothes go hand in hand. She understands that each day, women wear clothes that do more than just cover up their bodies. Women choose clothes that represent their personalities, mood, level of attraction sought, ambitions and desires. Si Mee Collections is a collaboration of unique and exquisite fabrics that are purchased worldwide. Rosemarie prides herself in finding the highest quality fabrics that she molds into couture beach cover-ups. These are made to accentuate the natural feminine qualities of women. Rosemarie wants all women to be represented in her collection no matter their dress size. As a result, she worked very hard to incorporate functional design elements into the cover-ups so that they are one size fits all from a size 4 to a size 20. Si Mee Collections has 14 different designs to highlight and emphasize different parts of the body.

Si Mee Collections Jamaican-born Rosemarie spent her early years surrounded by the beauty of the Caribbean, being inspired by its natural beauty of vibrant colors. In her late childhood, her family emigrated from Jamaica to England where she studied European history and always having had an affinity for period pieces in fashion. She attended many fashion shows as a young adult, encouraged by her aunt who was a successful model. Her aunt was instrumental in immersing her into the world of fashion and design. Attending fashion events throughout Europe, Rosemarie was always surrounded by beautiful women who would walk into a room and time would just stop because of their sheer presence and glamour. These memories would later become a part of her creative catalog as she designs statement pieces. Travel and cultural trips have always been a passion for Rosemarie, and after many trips to the United States, she decided to make America her new home. This is where she met her husband, Dr. William Macklin. They both love to travel and have a preference for beach resorts. On one

of their many vacations, she stayed at one of the island’s finest resorts where, in her opinion, many of the women seemed to be trapped in unflattering cover-ups that hid their bodies and mood. “It bothered me to the extent that I wanted to create a beach cover-up line for women of all shapes and sizes. I want women to feel liberated and elevated in their spirits simply because they look fabulous in their cover-up.” It was in that moment the idea was sparked. Rosemarie would design a beach cover-up line that women would want to be seen in and Si Mee Collections was a reality. McKenzie Chambers DK Productions, Inc.

M

cKenzie Chambers was lucky enough to grow up with an incredible role model, mentor and someone who inspires her. Her mother, Kimberlie Chambers, is the founder and executive producer of DK Productions, Inc, Nevada’s premier film and video production company established in 1990 with partner and film director Dimitri Sotirakis. McKenzie is now part of that incredible venture. Born and raised in Las Vegas, she graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration. According to McKenzie, she remembers being on set with her mother when she was just 2 years old and was part of the business growing up. Whether it was picking the extras, selecting the best take from raw footage, or even acting in some of the commercials, she has fond memories of helping her mother. This is what makes her future with DK so intimate and exciting. “This comes so natural to me,” she said. “Growing up around the production business definitely made me have a passion for this work.” Even at a young age, McKenzie has worked as an assistant to a doctor, held positions at UNLV and coached gymnastics and cheerleading in Texas. “I wanted to return to the company because I am one of the partners, and I take pride in that and want to continue to see DK grow.”

While she began her education as a journalism major, McKenzie decided to expand her knowledge base in a new area. Working multiple jobs gave McKenzie the stability, experience and a strong work ethic. Today, McKenzie is the production assistant, which means she has a variety of responsibilities. She works with preproduction in different television shows and commercials, producing projects, writing scripts, voiceovers, working with the cast and crew, budgeting, as well as handling aspects of financial responsibilities. As a millennial, McKenzie can share her point of view with the range of generations that DK has to offer. This helps the company to continue to transform, grow and reach clients and audiences on all levels. University of Nevada, Las Vegas Athletics Director

esiree Reed-Francois will become the new University of Nevada, Las Vegas athletics director on June 1 and is the first Hispanic female athletics director at the FBS level. Reed-Francois has over two decades of leadership experience as an athlete, attorney and athletics administrator and is considered one of the industry’s rising stars. At UNLV, she will oversee all aspects of the athletics program, including general operations, fiscal affairs, facilities, strategic planning and external relations. “There’s a great sense of enthusiasm and momentum in the community and at UNLV, and I’m honored to join this university and work with our coaches, staff and student-athletes to build on the solid foundation in place,” said Reed-Francois. “College athletics have the unique ability to educate, unite and inspire. Together, we will do all of that at UNLV and build a championship culture that leads academically and athletically.” Reed-Francois served as second-in-command to the athletics director at Virginia Tech and was responsible for external relations and day-to-day operations for 22 sports, over 600 student-athletes and 14 facilities. An administrator with an eye toward balancing the complex external and internal facets of a Power Five athletics department, she partnered on budget development for all athletics units at Virginia Tech,

prepared the department’s facilities master plan, redesigned fundraising strategy and revitalized the university’s studentathlete success program. Under her leadership, overall ticket, marketing and licensing revenue rose over 20 percent the past two years and the institution secured the largest corporate development gifts in program history. This included a season ticket sellout for football and marked attendance increases in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, soccer and softball. She was one of just four women in the nation responsible for day-today operations of a Power Five football program and helped orchestrate the most-attended football game in history in 2016 when Virginia Tech and Tennessee met in front of over 156,000 fans at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Reed-Francois earned a bachelor’s degree from University of California, Los Angeles and a juris doctorate from the University of Arizona College of Law. She is very involved in athletics administration at the national level, participating in the Division 1 Athletics Directors Leadership Institute and Fellows Program, the Women Leaders in College Sports’ Executive Institute and as a member of the College Football Playoff Committee’s operations committee.

Susan G. Komen Nevada announced that Tanya Flanagan has been named as board president, succeeding Diane M. Allison. Flanagan, a three-time breast cancer survivor, is also a strong community supporter and advocate, volunteering numerous hours to speak publicly about breast cancer, educating and raising awareness about the disease. Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada announced the appointment of three officers to its Board of Trustees: Scott White, Julie Murray and Walter Spansel. One of the state’s oldest and largest nonprofit social service providers, Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada offers 20 diverse programs, helping over 100,000 people in the community. Murray is currently the CEO of Moonridge Group, which provides philanthropic guidance to nonprofits worldwide. As founding president and CEO of Three Square Food Bank, Murray was instrumental in making the nonprofit a national model for hunger relief activism. Diana Tennyson Nielsen serves on the board of directors for the Las Vegas Showcase House, a nonprofit organization benefiting under-resourced youth of Clark County. The showcase house is the first of its kind to provide an educational project based mentorship program where students are mentored by industry design professionals, architects and trade partners. She is also on the DIFFA Las Vegas committee, Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids, participating in the annual fundraiser Picnic by Design. As principle of Tennyson Nielsen Group LLC, Showroom Services and Manufacturer Representation, Tennyson Nielsen has over 25 years in management. Andson was honored, by Mutual of America, as a 2016 Merit Finalist for the Community Partnership Award and received a check for $25,000. Each year Mutual of America selects 10 organizations, from a national pool of candidates, that have shown exemplary leadership by facilitating partnerships to build a cohesive community that serves as a model for collaborating with others. Andson was selected for their Piggy Bank project, providing students with weekly hands-on banking experiences. Starting from kindergarten, students at three Clark County Schools set savings goals and make weekly deposits at a “bank” that is set up at their school. The Silver State Schools Credit Union keeps those deposits in savings accounts. At the end of fifth grade, students have the option to convert their Piggy Bank savings account into a regular savings account or withdraw their funds. The creative team behind the fifth annual show “One Night for One Drop” as imagined by Cirque du Soleil included Krista Monson, director of creation. Monson oversaw the creative process bringing writers and directors Nicky and Laetitia Dewhurst’s concept and vision to life. She was writer and director for the inaugural “One Night for One Drop.” The production involves over 400 Cirque du Soleil artists, designers and technicians as well as special guests for a one time only performance benefiting One Drop, the foundation of Cirque du Soleil creator, Guy Laliberté.


Spencer Stewart, chancellor of WGU Nevada, announced that Frances Richards is a student faculty mentor for the online university. She helps guide students towards academic achievement and serves as a primary source of information about academic program operation and the policies and procedures of the university. With 15 years of experience in the industry, Richards has a doctorate and a Master of Business Administration as well as a Bachelor of Arts in speech with an emphasis in broadcasting and film.

Ka’imilani Quipotla is an 18-year-old senior attending Bishop Gorman High School. The young entrepreneur sells recycled apparel online and the Wall Street Journal scouted her for a fashion column about young consumers in the online market for recycled apparel. Quipotla is active in community service including volunteering at Three Square. Quipotla plans to pursue international business at the University of Nevada, Reno after she graduates high school.

Mary Vail has earned a Certificate of Social Sector Leadership from Philanthropy University. Powered by BerkeleyHass, the university is an educational initiative focused on providing organizations and individuals the tools needed to maximize their impact on the world. Vail was a member of the inaugural class to participate in the academic program and completed the seven foundational courses to earn the certification. Following the program, a fellow classmate asked Vail to mentor him in launching a social initiative in Kenya focused on empowering vulnerable children and widows.

Heather Vale was named one of the Top 10 videographer finalists in the inaugural Las Vegas Wedding Video Awards. She has been working both in front of and behind the camera for over 20 years; while modeling she took up photography as a hobby, and after becoming a television show host and producer, she often hoisted the TV camera onto her shoulder. Vale focuses on telling a story through content and has now worked steadily in all media: TV, radio, print and online.

Colliers International Las Vegas has hired Alexia Crowley, CCIM, LEED GA as a senior associate in the Medical Office/Healthcare Properties division. Nancy King, CPA, has joined the Silverton team as the director of finance. She has worked in public accounting as a tax senior. Kimiko Peterson is director of advertising, public relations and social media for Silverton Casino Hotel. Local Ladies Amanda Schneider has opened Nosey Dogs, a private, confidential and discreet narcotic detection company for residential and commercial customers. Schneider created the business when she had to deal with the addiction of a close family member and was researching ways to help without criminal charges. Professionally trained canines are able to find drugs hidden in homes and businesses. Nosey Dogs is not affiliated with law enforcement but offers a service, which allows the owner(s) and/or family members to make decisions if narcotics are discovered. In her new role as development director for the Southern Nevada Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, Catharine Rinehart brings a wealth of creative and organizational skills to the job of fundraising and education on behalf of the charity. She previously worked for the American Red Cross and began her professional career working in marketing and public relations for an architectural firm. Rinehart was responsible for the 2016 Jingle Bell Run and has already started working on the 2017 run.

Dr. Carli Snyder, a board certifiedclinicalpsychologist who specializes in young women’s health issues, has founded Girl Nation, a nonprofit organization, to provide girls a safe place to be empowered and have a voice. Girl Nation workshops are for second through eighth grade girls. Attendees learn to develop healthy relationships with other girls and become confident leaders. The Hydrant Club, a canine social club and training academy located in downtown Las Vegas, celebrated its two-year anniversary event during national pet month. Pinot’s Palette artist Larissa Sweetland-Levings is a creative interior designer and owns her own company, Sweetland Interiors. She works on furniture refurbishing, custom artwork, sewing, photography, theater and fashion. As a child, she sold her first painting when she was in the fifth grade at her school art festival and she has been hooked on creative endeavors ever since. Nicole Munoz was recently hired by PR Plus as coordinator. A recent graduate from University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and media studies, Munoz’s duties include composing and distributing press releases, assisting account executives and management with all public relations activities, work special events and executing day-today PR activities for designated clients. HELP of Southern Nevada received two awards from Workforce Connections including the 2016 Champion Award in the Organization Category and the 2016 Champion Award in the Individual Category, which was awarded to Denise Gee, chief executive workforce officer at the nonprofit. The Champion Award is awarded to those organizations or individuals who have clearly demonstrated their consistent outstanding skills, abilities and leadership contributions to the workforce development community. Hutchison & Steffen announced that Shannon R. Wilson has become a partner. Wilson, a member of the firm since 2006, practices in the firm’s litigation department, focusing on family law, but also practicing commercial litigation and insurance defense in the firm’s Healthcare Professionals Advocacy Group. Dona Fonte and her partner Nick Friel operate Kona Ice truck and partners with schools throughout the area to host Kona Days, which allow administrators to raise money for underfunded programs and initiatives. To date, Fonte and Friel have raised $3,500 for local schools, youth sports leagues and families in need. They presented a $2,300 check to J.W. Bonner Elementary School. The truck features tropical tunes and cups of flavored shaved ice. Carole Fisher, president and chief executive officer of Nathan Adelson Hospice, announced that Rosamari McNulty has been promoted to the position of vice president for Employee and Volunteer Solutions at the state’s largest nonprofit hospice. McNulty has been with Nathan Adelson Hospice since 2009. Prior to her promotion, she was the senior director of Human Resources and Volunteer Services for the hospice. A contractor’s license is different than a business license, which is maintained by the Secretary of State’s Office and does not carry the same protections offered by the NSCB. “Any electrical, plumbing, heating, refrigeration or air conditioning service must be done by a licensed contractor pursuant to state law,” Grein explained. “Homeowners should

also know that if the value of the work being performed—including labor and materials— is more than $1,000 or requires a building permit, a contractor’s license is required.” Verifying a contractor’s license is easy and can be done online at nscb.nv.gov, by calling the NSCB at 702.486.1100 or by accessing the NSCB’s mobile application, which is free for Android and iPhone users. The information you’ll receive will indicate the status of the contractor’s license, the monetary limit (maximum value a contractor can bid on a single project) as well as any disciplinary history the contractor may have with the NSCB. Contractors must undergo a criminal background check, demonstrate their financial responsibility to engage in work, show a minimum of four years of recent experience in the trade they are requesting to work, as well as W o m a n M a g a z i n e .V e g a s » 7 8 » S U M M E R 2 0 1 7

pass licensing exams that test their knowledge of various construction, building, and insurance laws in addition to the skills of the trade(s), among other requirements such as insurance and bonding. These requirements promote integrity and confidence in the construction industry. When you hire a licensed contractor, you may be eligible for the Residential Recovery Fund, which affords homeowners of single-family residences up to $35,000 in financial recourse if damages are incurred during the course of a project. When hiring a contractor, have a clear vision of the work you want to be done, the intended outcome and discuss your budget. Ask friends and family for contractor referrals. After verifying they possess the proper


contractor license(s), obtain at least three bids and review. Make sure each bid is inclusive of all costs for all the work to be performed, along with quality materials and permitting costs. Remember that the lowest bid is not necessarily the best bid.

Once you have chosen a contractor, insist on a detailed, written contract that includes colors, model numbers and quantities of materials to be used, as well as a work and payment schedule. Ask for and verify the license of any subcontractors that may be used, and ensure payments are commensurate with the work completed. When you turn to an unlicensed contractor, who often comes in with a less expensive quote or too-good-to-be-true promises, you may not realize the protections you are los-

ing, the liability and risk you are assuming, or the added expense you are likely to incur in the event the work does not meet your expectations. Some unlicensed contractors are true scam artists, equipped with smooth talking salesmen, high-pressured sales tactics and dubious schemes or business practices that often involve diverting the homeowner’s attention from what is actually taking place. Grein urges homeowners to never let individuals into your home that you do not know or have not personally solicited for a service. In some instances, homeowners have reported being robbed. A salesman will enter your home to give you an “estimate” while another worker will use the restroom or walk the home taking items of value.

Grein urges homeowners to exercise caution when they encounter these tactics from someone offering home repair services: • “Today-only” pricing; • Demands for large down payments and cash transactions; • Offers to use leftover materials at a discount; • Unwillingness to draft a written contract or bid.

While few resort to violence or thievery, unlicensed contractors are also more likely to target seniors or other individuals they believe they can intimidate. Always contact the NSCB with questions or concerns about the work being performed in your home or if the contractor is not responsive. You have four years from the date the work is performed to file a complaint for remedy, so keep your documents organized. Y

ou’re an established, successful professional and decide that it’s a good time to give back and become a mentor. After all, you probably had one or two along your professional and personal journeys and those people had a strong and indelible impact on your life. As a successful woman, sharing strengths and challenges is one of the best ways to pave the way for the next generation to become leaders and create their space in the world. It’s also yet another rung on the corporate social responsibility ladder; investing in the lives and the successful career paths of the next generations of leaders benefits all of us. Here are a few ways to maximize your mentorship experience: Be sure you have the time to give. Time is always at shortfall, it seems. Becoming a mentor means being able to give of your time in a meaningful way, so be sure when you decide to dedicate yourself to an individual or group, you aren’t looking at your phone and trying to multi-task because you didn’t have the time. Chemistry matters. Whether you go through an organization to match you with a mentor, or you have one

within your organization or in your personal network, be sure you’re not wasting your time with someone who isn’t going to give their all. Look for motivation, tenacity, eagerness and a willingness to accept open feedback and constructive criticism. Conduct an appraisal a few sessions in and ensure that you and your mentee are communicating well and have an established rapport. If not, it is okay to recommend another mentor or move on. Set goals. Mentorship isn’t a therapy session, or an in-person version of What Color is My Parachute? You and your mentee should set clear, specific and measurable goals for your relationship and keep an open dialogue about the progress of the mentor/mentee relationship. This will keep both of you productive, on track and efficient with your time together. Emotional intelligence can be part of the mentorship process. While you may be mentoring someone in the same industry or career path, mentorship can also be a valuable lesson in emotional intelligence. Learning how to react to

difficult situations, self-management, empathy, leadership and building relationships, to name a few, are critical components of professional (and personal) development and can be nurtured by you as a mentor. Finally, recognize that the mentor/mentee relationship is two-way. While your mentee will gain valuable insight and knowledge from you, it can be a rewarding experience, during your conversations and meetings, to identify gaps in your knowledge base, identify efficiencies and gain new perspective on topics, issues, technology and more. Mentoring can be rewarding on a personal level, but it can also enrich and encourage your development as much as your mentee. As Phil Collins once said, “In learning you will teach and in teaching you will learn.” The Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce is the largest business organization in Nevada. oday we all post photos of what we ate, our feet as we sit on the beach, our pets and certainly our selfies. This is a time when we are communicating our lives, feelings, political stances and major events using social media. When Betty White hosted NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” as part of her monologue, she told the audience, “I am part of the generation that believed it was rude to make people look at photos of their vacation.” Those days are truly gone. According to Hubspot, 92 percent of marketers in 2014 claimed that social media marketing was important for their business, with 80 percent indicating their efforts increased traffic to their websites. According to Social Media Examiner, 97 percent of marketers are currently participating in social media but 85 percent of participants aren’t sure what social media tools are the best to use. Social media is an important part of an effective marketing plan. According to Lifewire.com, Facebook is still No. 1 with an estimated 1.59 billion users. Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest follows with Snapchat growing in popularity with teens and millennials. There are now web stars on YouTube with many of them getting paid by advertisers to promote products and services to a new generation. There is increased visibility for brand recognition on social media. Consider them as new channels to showcase your business, product or service. For example, a frequent social media user can become aware of your business after reading it in a newsfeed.

According to a report published by Texas Tech University, businesses that engage on social media channels receive more loyalty from their customers. Another study published by Convince & Convert found that 53 percent of Americans who follow brands and companies on social media are more loyal to those brands. When you build a following on social media, you have the chance to reach new, recent and old customers, and you’ll be able to interact with all of them. Every image, video, comment or post is an opportunity for someone to react, and every reaction could lead to clicking on your website or engaging with you in other ways. Identify business goals and your social media strategy should serve the goals you set. Marketing objectives aren’t useful if specific parameters aren’t defined to measure success. For example, if one of your primary goals is generating leads and sales, how many leads and sales do you have to generate before you consider that goal a success? If a business is suffering from low engagement on their social profiles, it’s usually because they don’t have an accurate customer profile. Knowing your customers will define and target the right people with the right messages. This includes age, occupation, income, interests, problems, obstacles, habits, likes, dislikes and motivations. Social media is one way we reach out to the readers of the magazine as well as promote our sponsors. It is part of our overall marketing plan and it should be part of your business plan for success.

ew Vista, a Las Vegasbased nonprofit serving persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, leads the charge in generating volunteer opportunities for people with IDD, empowering people with disabilities to be involved in their communities. The New Vista Gives Back program connects members with other nonprofit organizations and community partners to provide volunteer opportunities. The program matches youth and adults with IDD with volunteer options that match their interests and abilities.

An unintended consequence of the team members’ service is that not only are they able to make a difference by lending support to a charity, but they deliver a powerful message through their willingness to participate. Members are truly at the center of social change, when they work side-by-side with their typical abled peers. Members of New Vista Gives Back lead by example, creating an awareness of the IDD community. One of the best ways to make new friends and learn about people of diverse backgrounds is to commit to doing a shared activity together. Of the many volunteers that have chosen to offer their time, over 90 percent return to help the cause again.

With its robust volunteer base, it seems for this cause, that strength certainly comes in numbers. “We have really cultivated an absolutely amazing base of bighearted volunteers over the years.” Board of Directors Chair Craig Herrmann said. “Being an established nonprofit serving the intellectually challenged for over 30 years, we’ve come to realize that our community is built upon those willing to give of their time, talents and treasures. It is ultimately people that care enough to spend their free time giving to others whom a great charity is built through.” Volunteers are the lifeblood of a nonprofit organization. Charities rely on the efforts and support of their volunteers to further their mission. Perhaps the greatest benefit people derive from volunteering is the satisfaction of incorporating service into their lives and making a difference in their community. Giving in even simple ways can help those in need and improve health and happiness. The New Vista Gives Back team participates in a variety of ongo-

imply stated, our life on this very day is a gift to be enjoyed to the fullest and not some silly problem needing to be solved. The gift of today comes loaded with infinite possibilities and endless opportunities. There’s not enough time to meet all of the awesome people or go all of the great places or do all of the fun things. Yet, with all that we have already been given (which is clearly and evidently too abundant) many or most of us are still trapped like prisoners inside of a false, erroneous or illusionary sense of scarcity and lack and this keeps us wanting to get this or needing to get that. Once we shift from trying to get (as if we lack something) into simply receiving with open arms all that we have already been given, then and only then, will we ever get what it absolutely means to be alive. We are alive during the greatest time in human history. We are doing things that far exceed the imagination of our most brilliant ancestors. Our homeless people eat better today than the Kings and Queens of yesterday. Right now we have another chance to improve our attitude. Life itself is a perfect mirror reflecting our attitude, perception and belief. This is why ANYONE with a bad attitude is guaranteed to be miserable.

Mark Shunock, who burst on the Las Vegas scene as one of the stars of “Rock of Ages,” now makes a cameo in “Magic Mike Live.” He is also the founder of Mondays Dark, a bi-monthly variety show where 100 percent of ticket sales benefits a different local charity. Mondays Dark has partnered with over 40 local organizations and raised over $400,000 with all money staying in Las Vegas. He also opened and operates The Space, a community-driven charity-based arts complex. The Space consists of a multi-purpose 3,000-squarefoot performance space, Black Box Theatre, two rehearsal studios, podcast/recording studio and piano bar/lounge. 1 Walk us through a typical day in your shoes. Morning yawns. Voicemail check. Iced black coffee. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. I am at The Space planning and producing events and making sure our Mondays Dark featured charities are working hard for their $10,000. Magic Mike shows is Wednesday to Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. so I head to Hard Rock from The Space those days.

Not really. What I love that’s currently happening. People used to say “Hey! You’re the Rock of Ages guy!” Now they say “Hey! You’re the Mondays Dark guy.” I like that a lot.
