LETTER FROM THE

publisher Hello FALL…well, as fall as it gets here in Las Vegas! I’m excited to share this issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine with you. I feel so privileged to be amongst the women on the cover, and I’d like to share with you how that just did not come naturally for me; I really had to step out of my own way to accomplish this. For most of my career, I have been a behind-the-scenes person; helping others as the spotlight shined on them. It is my passion to help others reach new heights and I would feel accomplished as I watched them receive the recognition they deserved. Stepping into the spotlight has been one of the most challenging things for me to overcome. The purpose for me sharing this with you is that I hope it will inspire some of you who want to take a leap to also get out of your own way. It truly is an honor to be a part of the Women Empowering Women feature, as all of the ladies on the cover are leading the way by creating positive change in our community and around the world. They deserve to be celebrated! Now that summer vacations have concluded and school is back in session, we are gearing up for a favorite season of mine. I enjoy the cooler temperatures, beautiful fall décor and great reads while sipping on pumpkin lattes this time of year. As new colors are introduced into our desert landscape, it is a reminder of how delightful change can be.

Photography by Shane O'Neal

There are several featured articles in this issue that will help you ponder your life, where you are on your personal and professional journeys, and suggestions on making improvements to be more aligned with the goals you have set for yourself. We’ve included several business and networking opportunities in order to grow your brand and promote your services on a professional level, as well as philanthropic opportunities, should you choose to donate your personal time to making a difference for the betterment of our community. I encourage you to pause and take some time to dive deeper into the examples offered in order to enhance or elevate your life. The women (and men) who are featured in this issue will both inspire you and give you something to aspire to. If you would like to grow in any of the areas that they specialize in, please contact them and get that process started. There is no time like the present. What are you waiting for? Go for it! Thank you for allowing us to lead, motivate and celebrate you ... one issue at a time. Gratefully,

Stephanie Kocher ‘You can always tell who the strong women are. They are the ones you see building one another up, instead of tearing each other down.’ - Anonymous

LETTER FROM THE

managing editor

Welcome to fall, we made it through yet another scorching summer. Like many, this time of the year excites me (hello, fall fashion and all the pumpkin things), yet can almost feel like an emotional and mental purgatory: caught between where you have been, where you are and where you are going as a new year quickly approaches.

While putting together this issue, I paused to reflect on the subject of happiness and what it truly means. It is a fairly broad topic, as it shows up everywhere from our internal, mental state to our external lives; career and everything in between. The ability to find or create that delight within these areas can be a challenge, but not one that needs to be tackled alone, as we are on this journey together. Within these pages, we continue on with our series on branding yourself with two articles, Scaling Your Brand and Building Your Clientele Through Branding, both of which will help you look at how you establish your brand successfully. We also get back to that internal happiness with The Goodness Experience, Part 3 and Living By Design, and, along the same lines, we feature Mental Equity, which focuses on those who take up valuable real estate in your head. Take a moment and reflect upon happiness and what it means to you. Is it a random, sly smile? A secret shared between two people? Is it found in taking a risk or exploring a new adventure? Is it an unexpected package that randomly shows up? The thing about the state of being happy is that we are so conditioned to think about what it is supposed to look like that we often miss out on the little joys of life because we are expecting it to be some certain way. But the relief is that there is no hardcore way to define what it is, exactly. You just know it when you feel it ‌ or when you don’t. As we live our best lives this fall, I encourage you to take a moment and think about how these topics can be applied to your life each day.

Live Younger

LONGER II PART

Yo u r S t a t e o f M i n d i s Yo u r F o u n t a i n o f Yo u t h By Roselyn Poon

Is your life starting to feel like a ticking time bomb? Well, let’s cut the red wire and turn on your Fountain of Youth. You have the power to decide if you are old or simply of an age. It all depends on your state of mind, excluding debilitating medical issues, and your state of mind is the product of your beliefs. Aging and old age affects all of us sooner or later, the trick is to defer old age to as late as possible. Validate your core state of mind Knowing your core state of mind is step one. It is the sum of your core beliefs, colors your experience of life, and heavily influences your point of view, your decisions and your actions. If you turn on your Fountain of Youth and start living younger longer, you need to revisit some of your core beliefs and, possibly, update them. Often, our firmly held core beliefs are so buried in our subconscious that we do not even know they exist. They were developed and installed into our subconscious as a result of our environment and have been running on autopilot ever since, unless something dramatic occurs that brings them to the surface and into our conscious mind. Case in point, as a child, I never questioned the existence of Father Christmas, until one Christmas my mother said we were going shopping to buy gifts for everyone. Up until then, I firmly believed they came from this jolly fat man in a red suit. Everything in my environment confirmed his existence until that fateful day. Conditions change, your environment changes and you change. Take some time out and really look at your life and where you are going. Start questioning why you think and do what you do when it comes to aging and your life timeline. Are you simply going along with your environment, your family and friends? “Most people age in accordance with their environment; however, normal does not make it right." Just because people around you have accepted the status quo does not mean you have to. Take some personal responsibility for your life and ask yourself what is important to you. What are some of your beliefs concerning aging and old age? For example: • You can’t teach an old dog new tricks • Dementia, Alzheimer’s and fragile bones are all caused by old age • Today’s world is meant for the young

22

Fall 2019 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

• It is too late to change • Once you hit 60 it is all over • Retirement is the beginning of the end Create a list of your beliefs about old age, and then question them, research them, update them or leave them on the curbside. This is your life; take control of your future and reprogram your subconscious with updated living younger longer beliefs. Cultivate a youthful state of mind This sounds easy, but change takes time. Take little steps and add some concerted effort into the mix. I have met some wonderfully exciting people who are well over 60 and still have an enthusiasm for life. Their state of mind and state of being are firmly based on the belief that the onset of old age is within their control. They believe that life is worth living and a much happier alternative to spending the next 20 to 30 years growing older every day. The point is that you need to understand your core beliefs about aging and old age and appreciate the massive impact these beliefs have on your state of mind before you can start the process of pushing old age as far into the future as possible. You need to cultivate a more youthful state of mind. Remember, your unconscious self, which is your state of mind, is pulling the strings, and it has been doing this for most of your lifetime, so putting it in check is going to take some effort on your behalf. You need to keep your beliefs in check and not give into complacency. It is never too late to think about your future and decide if you like or do not like what is coming. The important point is to know that you can have input into your future and it starts with your personal Fountain of Youth; your state of mind. Believe in life and get involved. It is never too late to turn back time. Roselyn Poon is an author, speaker and motivator on all things to do with living younger, longer and extending our most productive phase of life well into what is commonly referred to as our twilight years. Her upcoming book, “Resetting Your Inner Clock,” is scheduled for release later this year.

Most people age in accordance w i t h t h e i r e n v i r o n m e n t ; h o w e v e r, normal does not make it right.

What is

PEACE

OF MIND? By Holly Davis, CPCI, ABD

I asked my 7-year-old son, “What is peace of mind?” His answer was easy, “I don’t know. I don’t care.” It struck me as curious that this is an adult thing to want peace of mind. We seem to be suffering from confusion, whereas it once was so simple. For a child, simply being in life and living one second at a time is a simple, peaceful way of life. So, I asked my husband, “What is peace of mind?” His answer was, “It’s when you have so much on your plate and mind, but you are able to center.” Perhaps, putting too much on our plates is where adults have gone wrong? I did some further exploring on social media and put together a panel to ask about peace of mind and these were some of the answers: “I do not know,” “death,” “having my bills paid,” “music,” “exercise,” “animals and nature,” and my personal favorite was, “a beer garden and fresh cut grass.” Peace of mind is different for everyone. One thing is for certain: we know when we do not have it. Having our needs met is assuring, but it does not really bring peace of mind. Peace of mind is the calm that can be carried with us everywhere we go, no matter what situation we are in. I like to think of peace of mind as being in the eye of the storm, or that space above the storm in the clouds; the higher perspective on life. I liken it to having the world around us rage on, but on the inside, there is stillness. A secret place; a place that one can go to with personal mastery over thoughts. How do you get peace of mind? Thoughts will never cease, but we can change them to be more conducive to peace with a little training. All the

concepts of peace taken from my social media consensus equate to the feeling of lack of resistance and strife. Having one’s bills paid, smelling fresh cut grass, with puppies bounding about, under a sunny sky are instances in life that we can take that tone, that vibe, that feeling and remember it through marinating on it, or quite simply meditation. I lead my life with my thoughts, creativity and quiet. It is a loud, gritty world and taking the time for stillness is where I feel like most of us could benefit. Taking just five minutes a day to shut the eyelids and let thoughts flow is a powerful tool. Once you start on the journey of quieting the mind, you will get better at it as you go. This little bit of mind work allows me to get more done because I feel refreshed and get more answers. The quiet for my brain is like a muscle; it requires being exercised to produce more strength. I make my mornings a time to consider the day, or the week, that is ahead. I think about how I would like to see myself in each situation, rather than allowing life to knock me around like perpetual waves that I merely survive. I do not let life happen to me; I tell it how I want it to be through my mind’s eye. When you don’t have peace of mind, don’t ignore it. Do you ever think, “It’s not so bad?” That is a sign that indeed it is that bad. Why suffer? Why lie to yourself? That is human heartbreak defined, staying in places that are not congruent with your values. Relationships, jobs, towns, homes, cars, cell phones can all be tolerated way too long. I had a friend once who said, “Why don’t you just get rid of the struggle?” It was revelatory…because yes, we can look at all the areas of our own life and make changes. The most important aspect to change for peace of mind is changing ourselves.

How do I change myself?

What Brings You Peace?

Start small: Order something different, go down a different street on the way home, explore the opportunities elsewhere, exercise, seek wisdom and education, get up and go out more, and invest in yourself. Listen to yourself. Ego says, “You can’t do that, who do you think you are?” Or “If you do it like this, people will like you,” but the heart says, “I can do what I am supposed to do, for no one else but me.”

✤ Ask yourself how you feel about your life in every area and analyze (not beat yourself up) and ask yourself what do you feel needs change?

What are you supposed to do here on earth? Get quiet and remember. What were you put here for? What if you don’t know? That is okay. Look for the signs, remember what you love and do more of those things. When was the last time you sang? Do the things you love for peace of mind, like swim, dance, get artsy, be social, read and protect yourself from negative outside influences. Don’t confuse peace of mind with being comfortable. Following your heart is not always comfortable, but it is the right way for you, which always equals peace. Direct your life, bring about what you think about. Lack of peace comes from allowing life to happen to you; be responsible for your own peace of mind.

✤ Write down what you want. ✤ Make some auto suggestions daily, for example: “I am so grateful and thankful every day, and I receive and accept the offer of life that I may truly live.” ✤ Read good books like “The Prophet,” “The Alchemist,” diaries (“The Diary of Ann Frank”), and biographies, or “The Happiness Project.” ✤ Stop allowing so much input by monitoring and limiting the use of electronics, TV, cell phones, laptops and social media that can be a source of distraction. ✤ Be around people who make you feel good. ✤ LOVE yourself by seeing more of your goodness. ✤ Heal the inner parts by seeking professional help and stop ignoring them. ✤ Offer help to others by using your gifts.

UNITED WAY’S EMERGING LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR WOMEN SCHOLARSHIP Helping Two Local Women Get Ahead When fall classes start at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, over 25,000 students will be exploring the campus, meeting new professors and preparing for their futures. Jasmin and Milena Avagyan, sisters and recipients of the Emerging Leadership Award for Women, will be among them as they take the first steps to prepare for careers that will create a better community. United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) supports children, families and individuals in our community from cradle to career. An important part of that mission is ensuring that local students are educated and empowered to enter the workforce, ready to succeed and contribute to our economy. UWSN’s Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) is leading the charge with the Emerging Leadership Award for Women, a fouryear scholarship awarded to two local women so they can attend the Southern Nevada college of their choice. Jasmin, a junior, and Milena, a freshman, both chose to stay in Las Vegas and attend UNLV because of the authentic culture of the Southern Nevada community. “The people here are very united, open and honest, which is unlike anything I have experienced,” said Jasmin. “I made the choice to stay because I know I have the opportunity to give back to my community and make a positive impact here.” They are already planning how they can each make their mark and create a stronger community after college. Milena is impatiently waiting to start her business and management

classes so she can complete a project management certification in the future. “This is something that will never get boring for me,” Milena says. “There will always be room for improvement and a daily challenge!” After graduating from UNLV, she wants to earn her MBA so she can plan and complete projects that are friendly to the environment and attract a wider audience to environmental issues. Jasmin’s major in biology is preparing her for four years of dental school and extensive training after college. Her ultimate goal is to open a nonprofit organization to offer dental care for those who cannot afford it. “I believe everyone has the right to feel confident every time they smile, no matter their income,” she says. She knows that by earning her degree, she can use her knowledge to help others and improve healthcare in Southern Nevada. Growing up in Las Vegas has shown them both the importance of giving back to the community and helping to make it a better place for future generations. After seeing how a committed group of people like the Women’s Leadership Council can change lives, they have decided to follow their example. “The women of this organization have shown me tremendous leadership skills,” Jasmin shares. “I admire the bond between these women and how they showcase their strength in the community.” Milena credits the WLC for her ability to pursue her dreams. “These women each have left an influential and inspirational mark on me and my future actions,” says Milena. “Not only do I get to share the opportunity with my sister Jasmin, but I also get to be a witness of multiple women making changes on a daily basis to improve our community. I will always be grateful to each council member for seeing potential in me.”

A DA’S B r i n g i n g t h e B e s t i n H o s p i t a l i t y t o L a s Ve g a s By Cyndi Graham The vibes exuded when walking into Ada’s show guests that it will be not only good, but crazy good. Inviting and friendly with a laidback feel, the cozy atmosphere makes diners want to hang out longer than usual. It was clear that thought was put into every detail of the restaurant. Even the paint color that adorns the sign is an ecopaint consistent with the rest of Ada’s called Kind Green. The restaurant is managed by the lovely Sonia Stelea, who spent much of her career in the high-end restaurants of Chicago and San Francisco. A leap of faith brought her to Las Vegas, and a two-hour interview with Chef James Trees led to her opening and running the bar program at Esther’s Kitchen. There she was given the opportunity to flex her creative muscles, making the cocktails a central part of the experience at the Arts District Italian restaurant. While larger cities are still dominated by men, Las Vegas is ahead of the curve when it comes to female bartenders. “We all agreed that having a stronger, more balanced presence with women is what we needed,” says Stelea. “We are very mindful to hire women, because I have seen people struggle. I feel very supported here.” Given the opportunity to run this sequel to Chef Trees’ runaway hit restaurant, Stelea was encouraged to build a strong female presence at Ada’s. That begins with the celebrated namesake of the restaurant, Ada Coleman. “Coley,” as her customers nicknamed her, was a master mixologist who mixed her first Manhattan in 1899 and soon after became head bartender at The Savoy in London in 1903. Coley left her legacy as the original creator of the “Hanky Panky” cocktail that tops Ada’s cocktail menu list. It is hard to resist a cocktail from the gin cart, which offers tableside spirit-forward cocktails, a treat you will not want to miss. The idea

34

Fall 2019 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

behind the gin cart cocktails at Ada’s is to enhance each individual gin’s elements. “People have a certain idea of what spirits taste like,” says Stelea. “The reality is, advancements have been made and you have very creative people making spirits. The hard job of crafting a great gin is done for us, with a wide range of flavors.” The brilliance of Ada’s creative cocktails may make you wonder if you are even drinking liquor, because the cocktails are created to let the natural flavors of each individual gin shine. As for the food, every dish will not just be enjoyed, but devoured, filled with unique flavors. Special attention was given to the creative pizza menu. Popular choices include the foie gras pizza, topped with duck confit, pistachio butter, truffle cheese and jam and the market salad, featuring peaches, hazelnuts, ricotta and mustards, that you cannot leave without trying. It may be a favorite salad you’ll find yourself craving. For dessert, you will be hard pressed to only pick three of the ice cream flavors for the triple scoop, but be sure to indulge with a sample of the flavors that Best Ice Cream offers at the artisan ice cream counter inside Ada’s. Stelea attributes the atmosphere in Ada’s to “the genuine personalities and humanity in the team,” she says. “There was a huge emphasis on ‘team mentality’ when we hired. It’s people being good people.” It’s easy to feel that care was put into making Ada’s be the kind of restaurant that attracts good vibes. 410 S. Rampart Blvd, #120 702.462.7433 adaslv.com

Champs de Rosé Brut

This elegant California pinot noir is bursting with rich aromas of cherry jam, black plums and sweet toasted oak. Subtle notes of spice and cherry cola enhance the lush fruit profile. The finish is smooth with velvety tannins and balanced acidity. If you are looking for a reasonably priced pinot that will pair with everything from pasta and pizza to burgers and BBQ, this is the one!

J Vineyards California Chardonnay

Canoe Ridge Expedition Merlot

When Las Vegas temperatures start to drop below 100 degrees, it is time to celebrate fall with a fruit-forward chardonnay. J Vineyards multi-appellation wine offers a bright, layered expression of some of California’s most renowned cool-climate chardonnay regions (55% Monterey County, 27% Sonoma County, 18% Napa County). Flavors of ripe peach and juicy pear are enhanced by layers of vanilla bean and toasted coconut. Enjoy with rotisserie chicken, grilled salmon, coconut shrimp and mild cheese.

Canoe Ridge pays homage to the famed explorers, Lewis and Clark. It is rumored they named Canoe Ridge when they journeyed through eastern Washington on the Columbia River. They thought the ridge near the vineyard resembled an overturned canoe. Fortunately, one does not have to travel very far to find this impressive Washington merlot. The wine is big and bold with intense aromas of blackberry, plum and dark chocolate. The mid-palate is dense with flavors of blueberry, cassis and hints of black pepper. The tannins are firm, yet velvety, and the finish is silky smooth. Pair with roast pork, pepper steak and baked lasagna.

YOUR CLIENTELE THROUGH BRANDING R e a l - l i f e T i p s t o H e l p Yo u G e t S t a r t e d By Eileen Guilbeault Branding in any business is essential to stand out amongst the competition, but it is also easier said than done, right? Here are some tips to get your branding off to a great start: Choose your client: Yes, you choose who you work with through branding. Make a list of all the traits your ideal client has: Where do they shop, how old are they, what are their interests, and more. Now, you know what your perfect client will look like. Choose your colors wisely: Install a color picker extension, such as ColorZilla onto your computer and when you see a color that fits the aesthetic you want for your brand, write it down. Once you’ve found it, use it on everything. Your clients will begin to recognize your colors. Logo: Once you know who your ideal client is and the colors you want for your brand, consider hiring someone to develop your logo. There are sites like Etsy and Fiverr that can come up with a design reasonably inexpensively. Or, consider hiring a marketing firm to bring your vision to life. Photos: Branding photos are a great way to keep your image in front of potential clients. People want to see who they are choosing to work with, and local photographers often offer photo sessions that are focused on branding.

These sessions allow you to keep your branding fresh and relevant across all the social media channels you choose to use. Social Media: It can be tricky and time consuming. Choose the social media platform your ideal client uses and stick with it. In many industries, that means starting a business page. Be certain to abide by the rules of your specific industry Know your SEO: You must blog or create videos, even if you hate to see yourself on camera. Those who despise seeing themselves on video must blog. These two methods will get you more exposure than any other means. Ask for help: Find the people who want to see you succeed and ask their opinion if you get stuck. You never know what a fresh set of eyes will bring to your discovery process. The most practical advice is this: Just start and don’t overthink it, it gets easier once you start. And hopefully, you will find the vision for your company and that it was easier to accomplish than you thought it would be. Remember ... you are building the community you choose to work with through branding.

THE GOODNESS EXPERIENCE

Part 3

Happy Thoughts Lead to a Happy Life By Janice Marie Wilson

We all strive to live a happy life. Many books, workshops and videos have been created with the intent of teaching this state of bliss. They all have merit and have taught millions of people better ways to live their lives. So why is the presence of happiness often a fleeting feeling and an elusive goal to maintain? Let us pretend that simply thinking better thoughts is the place to start. It is the starting point where we can begin to guide our feelings to attract people, places and experiences that will bring us more joy and happiness. If you could consciously decide to choose thoughts that make you feel better every day, could you? Would you? We have between 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts in a day, with 80% of them being negative and 90% being repetitive. That leaves us with 10 to 20% that need our focus to create a happier life. What you think is who you become. You are born with an Inner Being that is comprised of the positive attributes of truth, beauty, grace, happiness and source energy. This is your Goodness, your G.O.D. (graceful Orb of Divinity). Believing in this power that is in you, and greater than you, is how you align with the positive energy that creates worlds. Your task each day is to focus on your positive attributes and let go of the negative. You choose what thoughts you think. Sometimes the choice to think good thoughts seems like an insurmountable task. Focus on how you gain the momentum to spend more of your time feeling these good thoughts. If you feel bad, it is because you have disconnected from your G.O.D., your Inner Being. Your Inner Being is eternally positive and good. When you feel bad, it means you pulled the plug; disconnected from the power of your Goodness, (G.O.D.) That 80% has gotten your attention; that is why you are stuck. The solution is to give your attention to thinking better thoughts. Some of us are so overwhelmed with responsibilities

that we do not take the time to think about whether we love ourselves, those around us and what we can do to think thoughts that make us feel good. Life is nothing but a whirlwind of activity that flies by us from the time we wake up until bedtime when we do not have the energy to move. We also use this activity as a protection: if we stop juggling our activities, our world will fall apart. What would happen if you took the time to pray, meditate and think about your day and how you want to feel as it unfolds? You have the choice to think better thoughts. Not by being afraid, but by allowing and accepting only good. You get to choose the thoughts that are good for you. You get to decide what thoughts you think. You get to pick what they will be, but if you find yourself in a downward spiral or the proverbial rabbit hole, pause. Don’t think. Take a moment to meditate, say to yourself, “Everything is always working out for me.” Yes, you can choose Goodness. Control + Alt + Delete and reboot your system. Learn what it means to respond and not react. It takes courage to do nothing in the face of challenges. It takes trust to “Let Go and Let God.” It takes believing in your True Self, to follow your heart’s desires. It takes peace beyond a wish to allow only good in your life. You were born with the ability to do this. You have the choice to connect with your True Self. You have everything you need to feel happy thoughts. Rely on your Inner Being, the power of your G.O.D. You can tell by how you feel and what you are manifesting, if you are succeeding. Good thoughts give good results. Negative feelings produce unhappy experiences. It takes intention, focus, and belief that you can live a happy life. Remember, success is measured by the amount of joy you feel. Now go out and take a walk in the sunshine. It increases serotonin, your happiness chemical. Enjoy the Goodness in you …

DAILY EXERCISES TO FOCUS ON WHAT YOU LOVE

Before getting out of bed each morning, take a few minutes to practice these exercises to help you fulfill your life with happiness and joy. If needed, journal your thoughts so that you can reflect on what you were feeling. Find three things that you are grateful for. They can be big or small. Focus on the feeling that this appreciation brings to you. Now, look at these same three things and feel the love and appreciation they have for you. It could be a beautiful flower that you love; feel that flower loving you. Focus on what you want. If what you don’t want pops into your head, use that thought to clarify what you do want. You can tell by the way you feel if you are thinking about what you want. Think only thoughts that feel good and you will feel good. Today, live from your heart. Write down what you love. Sing what you love. Eat what you love. Breathe what you love. In short, just love. It is the state of mind you are. Focus on the key ingredient to every success: love. Fall

FASHION

This season’s fashion trends are reminiscent of some of the best decades in our lives: the 70s, 80s and 90s. There is no one era pushing the fashion button more than another. This fall, you will find strong purples showing up that mix well with muted olives and floral patterns. It’s a cinch to accessorize with powerful belts in both solids and bold patterns. For that extra sass, wear it around your suit jacket or oversized coat. Small bags are front and center with a mix of waist-belt bags and cross-body looks. Long hems will provide not only a bit of extra warmth as the temperatures drop, but also add extra drama to your look. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns this season, your look should be a reflection of your own personal style. If you look good, you will feel good! The ssful Succe

MINDSET OF A SOLOPRENEUR F i v e M i n d s e t H a c k s t o I m p l e m e n t To d a y By Galit Ventura-Rozen

At the age of 22, I attended real estate school at the same time I was completing my business degree. It was more common at the time for those in my graduating class to get a job and work for someone straight out of college. I chose a commissioned path; a self-employment path, one where I did not receive a paycheck every week and my income was directly related to my productivity, work hours and self-motivation. To be successful, the right mindset is a must. To be successful in a business or profession that you are paid commission, implementing these mindset hacks into your day-to-day will give you the push you may need at times to be successful. 1. Be your own boss: When you work for someone, you have specific hours, days and times to be in or out of the office, you get a lunch break and you have a task list of items to complete every day. This is critical to your success. 2. Boundaries: One of the biggest mistakes I see is those who are paid through commission make is not setting boundaries with their clients. Your client will abide by what you set up front. For example: If you state you only answer calls from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, your clients will not expect a phone call to be answered unless it is an emergency. Same with email, set up dates and times you will return messages or you will be expected to be available to your clients 24/7. 3. Self-motivation: When someone is not expecting you at the office or you do not get a call if you do not show up to work, you will often have to self-motivate. How? Know what your motivation is to work. For some, it is the income so they can take care of themselves and loved ones. For others, it could be passion and purpose for what

they do. For others, it will be all of these and more. Make sure you know what your motivation is for those days you just do not feel like working. 4. Accountability: When you work for someone, you are held accountable to your job duties, goals, quotas and more. Make sure to take time to set up your own accountability and goals. It is much easier to succeed when you know what success looks like for you. Make financial goals, amount of product or clients you will work with goals and future goals. When a task or opportunity shows itself that is not directly related to your goal, revisit it and make a decision that will benefit what you are wanting to accomplish. If your strength is not holding yourself accountable, find someone that will. 5. Know the value of your time: Figure out what your value is with the income you are making, or want to make, and break it down by hour. This will help you make executive decisions to benefit your success. If you are making $100 an hour and are working on putting together a flyer for an upcoming sale, you may want to hire someone who may cost you $30 an hour. This is a big challenge for those who prefer trying to do everything themselves. When you figure out the value of your time, you will then realize your time is valuable and should be spent on the tasks and goals associated with the success you strive to achieve. As a commission-based solopreneur, it is important to step back from your business or profession and re-evaluate how you are doing things today. Are the choices you are making benefiting your end goal? Do you use your time wisely? Or are you in a spiral of not making money and not reaching the success you desire. If so, make one small change that can have a positive impact on your successful mindset.

Ginger Allen YOUR MARKETING LIAISON Marketing and Business Development

Ginger Allen has been hiring, training and mentoring women for over 20 years. Her signature saying is, “I love to help others succeed. My motto for my business is, ‘Your Success Is My Success.’” She started a Facebook group called Network of Women Business Owners to provide an area where women in business could support one another. The group currently has over 300 women. Allen’s company, Your Marketing Liaison, is a full-service marketing agency staffed by like-minded entrepreneurs and focused on providing first-class representation to every client. Services include: business development, advertising and branding, public relations, field marketing, social media, online marketing, networking and website creation. Your Marketing Liaison currently contracts the services of eight female independent contractors, all of whom have their own businesses. Allen contracts them to increase business revenue and mentor them on how to increase their own businesses along the way. Allen is focused on helping small businesses, so she keeps her rates at an affordable level and maintains a high standard of personal service. Allen says, “Because Your Marketing Liaison focuses on small businesses, we are always available to our clients.” She is also careful to keep people’s expectations at a realistic level. For example, she is often asked how long until someone sees a return on investment? To which she explains that ROI takes time, you have to plant the seeds, then fertilize and water them before they bear fruit. “Typically, we expect to see a return on investment between six months to one year and anyone that promises sooner will probably not be able to deliver on that promise.” Over the past 10 years, Allen has also sponsored and supported many women to become sober. She is the oldest of three and helped her mother, a single mom, raise her sisters. She feels that she has been helping women her whole life. Allen is a serial entrepreneur with multiple six-figure businesses under her belt. She is also a licensed real estate agent and is currently the 2019-2020 co-president of the nonprofit organization Clark County Medical Society Alliance. This year, the cause is mental health awareness for youth. Funds from the Fashion Show & Luncheon in 2020 will be allocated to the Born This Way Foundation led by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta. Allen has always supported men and women in business and philanthropy and will continue to do so.

MERGING MONEY To D o o r N o t To D o ? E x a m i n i n g t h a t Q u e s t i o n i n Yo u r R e l a t i o n s h i p . . . By Dr. Tiger Devore After sex, money is the issue that couples have the most disagreements about. Do we keep our finances separate or combine them? If separate, how do we contribute fairly on shared bills? If combined, at what point do we have to notify the partner of an expenditure that we intend to make, or have already made? What about saving: how much is reasonable, how much lifestyle do we give up in order to prepare for our future, how do we manage those savings so that they grow optimally? As individuals pair up and unite their lives, sharing money and considering doing so in support of a family is not something that we learn about in high school, unfortunately. Real trust and commitment that is consistently reinvigorated and reinvested in can lead to a wonderful blending of lives with shared intentions and real clarity about supporting the intimate partner as if you were supporting yourself. That kind of dedication and discipline is something that people not only have to agree to, but also put the work into maintaining long after the relationship has been established. If their concerns are your concerns and that belief is shared by your partner, then honest communication about challenges that come up in life can be taken on by the safety of the relationship. That is what we hope for. What if the marriage fails and you are considering divorce? People have common feelings about this, depending on their position in the marriage: Is it really okay that one takes away at least half of the money the other made

while married? Does one think that giving up a career to support another’s does not entitle that person to half of what was earned as a couple? Oh my, this can get so nasty so quickly. When we first meet, love and trust is in abundance. All the things that make us believe in a partner are there when we plan to commit our lives to each other; many still believing, “until death do us part. People and lives change. Most people consult lawyers when they have a problem. Just as it is best to see a therapist when you are taking on a challenge, rather than after you have failed at it, seeing an attorney at the beginning of the marriage to understand what happens if you do not plan for the possibility of divorce can be key to having a great divorce instead of a tragedy. Most business partnerships have dissolution agreements in the initial contract. Marriages should have this as well. This can take the form of a prenuptial agreement; such a document does not necessarily have to be about protecting the partner with greater assets, it can also spell out what the couple wants to have happen if a divorce should become necessary. For marriages that have this agreement in place, the people who are engaged in the relationship do not have to have mystery or fear about what will happen if they decide to divorce, since they already know and have already agreed to it in advance. The threat of divorce can be reduced dramatically by taking this simple step early in a marriage.

Real trust and commitment that i s c o n s i s t e n t l y r e i n v i g o ra t e d and reinvested in can lead to a wonderful blending of lives...

Alyssa

KLEINER

New Soccer Coach Inspires Girls On and Off the Field By Ella Silvestri Las Vegas native Alyssa Kleiner is more than a soccer coach. She is a true mentor and inspiration to the teenage girls on her team. As the new head coach of the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club’s girls ‘04 team (girls born in the year 2004), Kleiner is eager to start the next phase of her soccer career as a coach by sharing her knowledge of the sport while also inspiring the girls to be as passionate about soccer as she is. “My goal for the year is to teach these young women life skills,” Kleiner said. “The game itself will teach them a lot of the skills you need for the real world, when that time comes. Teamwork, organizational skills, leadership, planning, making goals, putting in the hard work to make those goals a reality, all things they can learn from the game and each other. My job is to reinforce these skills and make sure these girls understand that life is hard, but perseverance always prevails. With that being said, the other side of it is showing these girls the beauty in progress and where hard work and grit can take you. The relationships you build within a team, no one can understand it unless you are on that team. There is a certain type of chemistry that happens on and off the field

68

that creates that special passion for the game, and wanting to play and fight for one another. There is no feeling quite like it. I am very passionate for this game, and I wish to teach these young women everything I have learned in my experiences and throughout my entire career.” Kleiner has been playing soccer since age 7. Immediately, she fell in love with the game. She continued to play throughout her whole childhood, and after excelling throughout her youth career, she earned a coveted place on the Santa Clara University team. Her performances and growing experience led her to become a professional player in the National Women's Soccer League in 2015 with a move to the Portland Thorns FC. She then went on to represent the Washington Spirit and the Seattle Reign before returning to Las Vegas in 2018 to embark on the next step in her career: coaching. “Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club is really excited to have a coach of the caliber and experience of Alyssa Kleiner working with our young female athletes,” said Gary Soresman, executive director of the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club. “For female soccer players to receive advice and guidance from a person with this experience in the game is invaluable.”

octor D ALLISON MCNICKLE Yo u n g Tr a u m a S u r g e o n M a k i n g a N a m e f o r H e r s e l f w i t h U N LV M e d i c i n e By Paul Harasim By the time she turned 5 years old, Dr. Allison McNickle, now an assistant professor in the UNLV School of Medicine Department of Surgery, says her parents sensed that one day she would be a physician. Missing bandages gave them a hint. “I was always bandaging my teddy bears,” says Dr. McNickle, laughing. “I had quite the imagination.” Today, as the medical school’s section chief of trauma surgery, she plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the right equipment and latest training is available for surgeons. Dr. McNickle deals with harsh realities at the UMC Trauma Center on virtually a daily basis. Whether it is handling gunshot wounds, knifings, burns, or injuries from horrific traffic accidents, she has developed a reputation for being one of the best surgeons at putting people back together. “If she is there, I can guarantee she will be the one to give you the best chance for a successful outcome,” says Dr. Douglas Fraser, the medical school’s

division chief for acute care surgery and burn surgery. “Dr. McNickle is the person I would call if I was injured.” Not long ago, she dealt with hikers—they had fallen off a cliff—where coordination with a search and rescue team was necessary. “We collaborated well. One hiker was brought by helicopter with broken bones and internal injuries and we were able to give the care needed.” It was the UNLV School of Medicine’s Acute Care Surgery Fellowship, which she completed in 2018, that brought Dr. McNickle to Southern Nevada in 2016 from Chicago, where she had completed a general surgery residency. “I knew I wanted to be a trauma surgeon, from the kind of cases I dealt with, but I felt a need for more training,” Dr. McNickle says.” Dr. McNickle says the training she received from Dr. Fraser was taxing. “He is not afraid to tell you that you could do better.” Science and math were her favorite subjects in the public schools she

attended in a Chicago suburb. The fact that she often found herself in the distinct minority in higher math and science classes, “girls were definitely outnumbered by guys,” did not bother her. “I wanted to learn.” Dr. McNickle did her undergraduate work at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and attended Rush Medical College in Chicago. During her general surgery residency, she soon understood trauma surgery was her passion. “I like thinking on my feet,” she says. During her residency, she handled a gunshot to the abdomen case from beginning to end. By the time her supervisor came in, she had successfully handled the situation. “That was when I knew for sure that this is what I want to do, that I can do this.” Often patients and their families will stop by to thank her for lifesaving efforts at the UMC Trauma Center. “I may have sent them off to rehab on a ventilator and they come back talking ... it is a wonderful feeling to help someone. That is what gets me up in the morning.”

13 HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

Yo u C a n D I Y i n a We e k e n d By Marty Basher

Rainy weekend? The idea of giving parts of your home a spruce is a good one, but who wants to live with endless construction, to say nothing of the contractor who suddenly discovers a problem that is going to up the total cost to 20% more than the estimate? There are plenty of projects you can undertake yourself to improve your living space, making it more functional and appealing to the eye. And you can get these done in a single weekend. What’s not to love?

1. Bookshelf Bar Cart for the Living Room or Den If you’ve always wanted a snazzy way to store your drinks and fancy glassware, ready to impress your guests when you offer them a libation, this project is an easy one. All you need is an old bookshelf— not more than 40” high—some latex paint, four caster wheels and a handle to move it around with, or two: one for each side of the top of the cart. Just paint the unit and when it’s dry, add the wheels to the base and handles on the top. Once you’ve put out your bottles, your ice bucket, as well as the fancy highball glasses you got years ago but never use, you will have the perfect little bar cart to entertain from. 2. Play Space No matter how much you’d love to make yourself believe that toys will stay in playrooms, they don’t. Instead of the constant battle, why not build a play space? With the addition of some simple shelving and a few bins of your choice, you can turn an unused corner of the living room into an organized play area. While building shelves is quick and easy, there are also kit shelving and some fully built shelving units as well, if building is too time consuming or not in your wheelhouse. 3. Update Bathrooms While replacing faucets is a bit more complicated, it can still be done in a weekend with minimal cost and difficulty, even for a novice. New fixtures can be purchased at any home improvement store and replacing those can both update a bathroom and give it a completely new look. 4. A Custom Closet You Can Install Yourself The ability to buy and install a custom closet, all with easy to assemble parts that are made from high quality plywood, and will last a lifetime, sounds like a unicorn but Modular Closets has a solution for just about every space you can imagine. From a double-sized bedroom closet to an open space below the staircase, there are pre-designed and custom solutions with shelves, dovetail drawers, hanging bars and even tie / belt racks that you can put together and install in no time, without the expense of hiring someone to design and install it for you. 5. Not a Fan of Baby or Pet Gates? A Dutch Door Might be Just the Ticket Dutch doors are the split doors that are on separate hinges, so that you can swing open the top while keeping the bottom firmly closed. If you have a space where you want to be able to see what’s going on inside, for either kids or pets, a Dutch door lets you do that while keeping everyone safe and secure. You’ll need four hinges for your door—whether you are reusing an old one or getting a new one—evenly spaced so that there are two for each half. Then, you saw the door in half, sanding and painting to finish it. All you need to do is hang the two halves, with appropriate hardware for opening and securing them, and voila: Dutch doors. 6. Give Doors and Windows a Fresh Look Add new curtains or blinds to your windows. Bring in fun, colorful patterns and sheer textures that enhance the illusion of space and increase the amount of daylight in a room. You can mix and match solids with patterns, as well as different colors, to bring a room’s personality to life. Paint your doors a color that will help brighten the place up. Even paint the trim around your windows and doors. After you finish painting the door, add a nice wreath to give that finishing touch.

7. Add a Splash to the Kitchen Or a kitchen backsplash. Go modern, or even do minimal. Both are trending, and both can give a fresh and nice look to your home. There are many backsplashes to choose from to fit almost any budget. A great backsplash helps to keep the kitchen looking neat and welcoming. 8. Update the Laundry Room for Beauty and Function Updated laundry rooms are becoming one of the spaces that people look for when they’re buying a property. It’s not just about having a couple of machines in the deepest, darkest corner of the basement anymore. With that in mind, you can spruce up yours by adding shelving, cupboards, a visually appealing wallpaper behind the machines and storage hooks for an ironing board, iron and more. Even better? Secure a folding table to the wall that can be folded down flat when not in use: that way, you’re not using more space for furniture, but the table makes the laundry room more functional and useful. 9. Give Key Furniture Pieces a Face Lift. Looking to replace a chipped, fading dresser, or worn-out table seats? Rather than forking over a couple hundred dollars to buy new furniture, turn old furniture into a weekend DIY project. Repaint, repolish and restain your favorite coffee table, hope chest, office desk, etc. Choose fun, bright colors that make a room pop with edginess and excitement. Take it a step further with stencils, tile patterns and glass mosaic. 10. Add a Library or Reading Nook. Celebrate your favorite literature by setting up a calm, quiet library or reading nook for you and your family to enjoy. This area can be as big or little as space allows, taking up an entire room or a storage bench under a window. Along with standing and wall bookshelves, add a comfy seating arrangement: a sofa, a couple arm chairs, bean bags or indoor hammock. Don't forget proper lighting! Otherwise, you run the risk of straining your eyes and causing headaches. Rugs, house plants, candles and other decor create a cozy atmosphere in your library or reading nook. 11. Replace Old Outlet and Light Switch Faceplates. The little details can make all the difference in a room. A simple, weekend DIY project that will spruce up your house is switching out dirty, cheap outlet and light switch faceplates with new, durable ones. Aim for faceplates made of metal, tile, and polished wood. If you're feeling a bit artsy, grout together colorful glass, pebbles, or other materials for beautiful mosaic additions to your walls. 12. Clear the Clutter From baskets to bins, there are all kinds of neat ways to clear the clutter and make a difference in the way your home looks. Utilize shelves and drawers. Be sure to give each item its own space. 13. Awesome Accents Create a warm and inviting space with some great, yet inexpensive accents for your home. From lamps (even changing out the shades on some lamps) to different wall hangings, your home can be warm and inviting and look like a whole new space. Accent rugs, throw pillows, and even vases of flowers can throw in pops of color. There are projects galore that can go a long way to giving your home a little face lift, without the grand expense and fuss that goes into major surgery. Have a little fun and plan your next project; you’ll enjoy the satisfaction you’ll feel after a job well done.

Marty Basher, home organization expert for modularclosets.com, offers these tips on DIY projects that can be done in a weekend. Modular Closets are high quality and easy to design closet systems that you can order, assemble and install, in no time at all. Visit their website at modularclosets.com.

Brandi K. Cassady, ESQ. | Cassady Law Offices, P.C. Brandi Cassady has been working with her husband, Jasen, at Cassady Law Offices for over 17 years. It was in 2008 that she decided to enroll at the William S. Boyd School of Law at UNLV so that she would also be a qualified attorney in the practice. Cassady has now been a practicing attorney for five years. Cassady Law Offices provide wills, trusts, probate and trust administration services. Her initial motivation to become an attorney was to help the family business; however, she quickly became dedicated to the people they serve. Cassady strongly believes that everyone can have the benefits of estate planning, not just the ultra-wealthy or complex clientele base.

The most common question asked by her prospective clients is why someone would need a trust if they are not wealthy. The second most common is why a will has to go through probate. Cassady approaches every client without complicated legalese and explains why most regular folks do in fact need a trust. She often uses celebrity examples to explain why wills have to go through probate. We asked Cassady if there was anything in particular that our readers should be aware of, and she quickly replied that most people need to have their current trust reviewed. “If the trust is more than a few years old, it likely has outdated tax hurdles for the surviving spouse, which were great at the time, but no longer needed.”

Cassady Law Offices is a friendly, familyoriented practice. They know firsthand the importance of family life, and to this end, they have made estate planning and probate affordable for every family. Another key service offered is a free consultation to potential clients. Cassady believes that offering free consultations to prospective clients is an excellent indication of the good faith that an attorney is willing to extend to those who are interested in learning more about her services. Cassady is an attorney, wife and, most importantly, loving mother of their four children. Her family constantly motivates her and, in particular, she works tirelessly to set a great example for her daughters. She is obviously doing a great job.

Living by DESIGN

R e s t r u c t u r i n g Yo u r B e l i e f s t o C r e a t e t h e L i f e Yo u W a n t By Ava Mucikyan Belief is an illusion, yet it has so much power over us. Our belief system is an acquired knowledge and beliefs only live in your head. This is both good and bad at the same time. It is bad because all of us have dysfunctional and limiting beliefs that do not serve us and, as a result, hinder our growth. Yet it is empowering to know that by simply shifting a simple belief we can gain our power back. Try this: Pick a limiting belief that you have, such as “I can never … (insert a word/phrase here)” and replace this with “I can … (insert the same word/ phrase).” Pay attention how your body feels when you pronounce each one of them several times. If you repeat anything a few times, it registers in your subconscious mind as a belief and soon enough it becomes your reality. Have you noticed how hard it is to argue with people about things they strongly believe in? Core beliefs get formulated through extensive programming starting from our childhood: influenced by parents, educational system, religion, society, media and so on. If enough of these channels feed into the same idea, it slowly registers in your subconscious mind as a belief. Your mind starts looking for more validation to support the belief, which over time becomes a core belief. Granted, if the belief is not questioned over time, and enough people around propagate the same belief, then you can be convinced it is the truth and nothing but the truth.

different cultural systems and societal conditions, then whose beliefs are right? Depending on where I am in different parts of the country or the world, most beliefs change dramatically. Unless I want to conform, I am left with no choice but to question. Extensive questioning of my own personal beliefs as a foreigner led me to the understanding that beliefs are simply illusions; they are not universal truths. If enough people understood this in the world, we would have more peace. To identify your limiting beliefs, ask yourself, “Where am I stuck in my life?” or “Which beliefs do not work for me any longer?” Maybe you believe you do not deserve to be loved because … you are not pretty or you do not deserve love. Pay attention to your self-talk; is it positive or do you often put yourself down over very minor failures? Dysfunctional beliefs can be disguised in very simple thought patterns, such as “I always get sick before a big event,” “I am shy” or “I can never get anything right the first time.” These may have been your reality for an entire lifetime, but once you bring your awareness to these beliefs and set the intention to release them and replace them with new and positive beliefs, you can change your life.

Many beliefs have been transferred to us from several generations prior, which were influenced by living conditions and limited knowledge available to our ancestors. I call it the “collective consciousness,” which is easy to identify in clichés and superstitions, such as, “Money is the root of all evil.”

Some beliefs may take longer to break as they are wired by habits, and it may take a few rounds of falling into the old pattern to release the belief completely, but do not get discouraged, give it some time. Be especially mindful of anything that comes after “I am…” and “You are…” Make sure to switch to a positive statement each time you mention something negative after these. Set an intention to shift and do the work.

When someone brings up their opinion about something and you find yourself strongly disagreeing, remember it is their belief, you do not have to agree, but you also cannot judge. It simply differs from your belief. If we consider how each one of us has been raised in

Life can be a breeze if you have the right tools. Next time you catch yourself with a dysfunctional belief, pause and intentionally replace it with a positive belief that serves your highest and best interests and watch the miracles unfold.

g n i l a c S

YOUR BRAND

We i g h i n g Yo u r P a s s i o n v s . Yo u r P r o f i t By Ali Craig

Starting a brand is rarely a challenge. You have an idea, and you simply go for it. As Sir Richard Branson so famously says, “Screw it. Let’s do it” becomes the motto of most entrepreneurs starting out.

that makes you money, but does not feed your soul. And though we may view this as being pragmatic and smart business, the truth is this “one way or no way” mentality is killing your brand, business and bottom line.

But along the way, the road to building a successful brand gets tough. You wonder if you made the correct decision. Maybe this was not the right idea after all? Doubt begins to flood your brand. You have some success, but you need and desire so much more. Everything those naysayers said about this being a fluke, unsustainable, or a one-hit wonder comes back into your mind. In those moments, your passion freezes and your fear of how in the world are you going to scale this brand rises. You feel like you are left with choosing between your passion and your profit, if you are truly going to make it.

You see many people start their brands from passion, but when the success does not come fast enough and the sales are not big enough, we begin to switch our focus away from passion and look solely at profit. The truth is you want and need both to scale a brand successfully.

When chatting with thousands of entrepreneurs over the years, as I travel the country speaking at various events, I have found that most people come pre-programmed with the fundamental idea that you can have a business you are ridiculously passionate about, but will not be financially lucrative or you can have a business

78

Fall 2019 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

Passion vs. Profit Passion: Building and scaling a brand is a lot of work for a very long time. And, as I always say, branding is a deeply personal experience. Your personal hang-ups, mental blocks and social stories will color your brand more than any situation, financial issue, or societal shift ever could. We hate to admit it, but, when it comes to our brand’s growth, we can be our own worst enemy. Yes, you need to have the numbers working in your favor, but you also need to be in love with

what you do, because building a brand will test you in ways you never thought possible. Here is the personal test I use with my clients to determine if they have the right brand for them: If the worst day in your life happens: You lose your partner, pet, every relationship that matters to you, your money goes away, and every deep dark fear that you have all manifests itself at the exact same time, will your personal commitment to what you do and who you serve through this brand still have you showing up and bringing your best to the table that day? If the answer is yes, then you have the right brand for you. Profit: If you have answered yes to the above question, let’s look at numbers because numbers matter. Numbers do not just matter to your livelihood. Your brand numbers matter to your ability to reach, grow and influence, which is exactly what you want if you are as passion filled as you say you are. Can you create seven distinct streams of income within this brand? For example, with your coaching

business, you can consult, you can speak, you can create a line of inspirational T-shirts, you can build your social media following up enough to become an influencer, you can become a published author, you can create e-products and you can develop a unique coaching method that you certify others in. All products and services are complimentary to the brand, but they vary with regard to your time, income level and audience reach. For example, selling a T-shirt requires little time on your part, and while it will be a low profit per sale, it can have a wide audience. In contrast, your custom certification program will require a large time commitment from you; it will offer a greater profit and speak to a smaller customer base. This way, as your personal life or business team flexes in size and demands, your income stays on that steady increase. Additionally, by having seven distinct income streams, you are able to provide easy ins for people who are new to your brand, and a variety of offers that withstand highs and lows in the economy. To build a truly successful and sustainable brand, you must start with passion and make sure the profit streams are clear all along the way. Yes, your brand will evolve as it grows. It must, and you must, if you want to live the success you have been dreaming of.

Mental

EQUITY

How Clearing Resentments Can Benefit the Appraisal of Our Health By Jennifer Battisti

We’ve all heard the slogans—how holding onto resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. We’ve all been mentally terrorized by letting others take up real estate in our minds. Spinning scenarios about imagined outcomes, recycling arguments, gossiping about past slights, all of this attributes not only to mental exhaustion, but also, chronic inflammation, which is the prerequisite for illness, disease, aging, and even insomnia and belly fat. Makes you want to start the eviction process immediately, right? But why is it so difficult to let go? Why is it so tough to implement the floorplan for empathy and forgiveness? I think we have to first understand the payoff of resentments before we can choose not to take the bait. There is something so chemically delicious about feeling victimized. There, I said it. Truth is, we behave in unhealthy ways because the ego likes it. The ego likes to make something wrong, so that it can be right. It is the nature of the ego; to separate. The last thing the ego wants is an open house, where everyone meets others with compassion and freshly baked cookies. Fortunately, pain is motivating, and after I spend enough time punishing someone in my mind for being human, I hurt too. It does not feel good in my body to keep that fire smoldering. We can outwit the ego with wisdom. The ego only exists in the past (where all of your grudges are) or the future (where all of your fears live). The ego cannot survive in the present. The present moment is like homeowners insurance for your whole being. Try it out. Next time you are reliving a heated fight from that morning, or imagining a future conflict in your mind, focus on your breath. Where are your feet? What is the weather like? This is essentially a trick, but the ego is sneaky and cunning. This is not to suggest that we stuff or repress our feelings. That would be a little like never changing the air filters and expecting clean air.

Fall 2019 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

First, we welcome our emotions; we validate them, in the moment: Wow, I am angry, scared/feeling undervalued/so totally frustrated! Second, we give our feelings space; paper is my favorite place. I can really get honest about the nature of the hurt: I am mad at ______________ because he/she violated my _________ (usually trust, confidence, our friendship, my boundaries, time). The story I am telling myself about this incident holds the keys to my peace of mind. The real, vulnerable, gut-wrenching honest truth. Which is usually something about my not feeling worthy, not being seen or heard. Then I become generous with my thinking. I realize that causing harm is rarely intentional. It is rarely even about me at all. I imagine how it might be to be the person I am angry at. I consider that they might be struggling in ways I am not aware of. Once I arrive here, the resentment loses steam and it becomes less about the other person and more about me and about my relationship with myself. This is the only relationship we have any power over. I can begin to see how all of us are tender egos trying to feel seen and suddenly, humanity sets in and just like that all the windows have been opened and the sun is let in. This is not to say we don’t speak our heart’s truth when we are hurt. Many grievances can be traced back to unrealistic or unspoken expectations on our part. The key is to communicate clearly and directly about your expectations from the start. This is not always easy for women because society can still label it as “bossy,” or “harsh.” In reality, I admire women who own their truth and speak it respectfully. It shows they value the relationship if they have taken the time to set appropriate boundaries. This honesty works like the homeowners association for all of your relationships. Then you can get back to enjoying your community, back to planning that block party, just be clear who’s in charge of the chips and dip!

...we have to first understand the payoff of resentments before we can choose not to take the bait.

CORPORATE PARTNERS: CELEBRATING OVER

40 YEARS

Educating, Empowering, & Promoting Women www.nawbo.org/southern-nevada

3 Ways YOU CAN BE EMPOWERED a n d E m p o we r O t h e r Wo m e n By Galit Ventura-Rozen Just the other day, I connected a fellow female entrepreneur with a potential paid speaking opportunity. The first thing she said was, “Thank you for the opportunity, what can I do for you in return? There was no money made from the connection, and it was purely done from wanting to see and support fellow women speakers. This is not to be mistaken as not knowing my value, but, as women, I believe it is our duty to do our best to uplift, promote and support women. How can you do the same? Here are a few ways that are effortless, I promise you will feel so good afterward, and it gives you an opportunity to pay it forward. Mentor a woman who would be interested in learning about your profession, business or area of expertise. I am positive there are women out there who would love to know how to get into the business you are in, the job that you have, or your expertise. You can reach out to the local colleges, universities, and high schools and ask. I am sure that you will have a line of people waiting who are interested. There are also many volunteer mentorship programs available all over the city that would be more than happy to connect you with a younger girl or woman who would love to have the guidance you have to offer. I believe each of us has a gift that can be shared, and we should bring up the next wave of women professionals.

Hire women and work with women. Another way to increase and empower women is to hire them and work with them. In one of my businesses, I have four virtual assistants who are women, have worked with multiple coaches who are women, and delegate out graphics and more to women. This does not mean that I don't work with men, one of my other businesses happens to be largely male dominated. I have chosen in my female-focused business Empowering U to surround myself with women who I can empower and women who will empower me. Competition. Stop thinking of others as your competition. I have not once felt that a woman is taking business from me or is a detriment to my success because I am hired to show her my secrets to success with my business and speaking. Have confidence in your abilities to be successful and recognize other women are not your competition; they can complement you, offer you referrals and even show you how to shine more. When you let go of the idea that another woman is your competition and instead recognize there is enough room in this world for both of you to be successful, that is when you are truly empowering other women.

Ignite

YOUR CAREER Find the Spark that Lights Your Fire By Claire Friday One of the worst feelings in the world is doing something that you hate, or working at a job that doesn’t fulfill you. Transition can be difficult, but finding what you love to do, or what makes you excited when you wake up in the morning, can make your career feel more like an adventure and less like a job. Many of us don’t know where to start when it comes to finding our passion or even on how to monetize our skills into something that can be profitable. You don’t need to have all of the answers right away. Start with a few simple steps: Realize what you are really good at. This may take some time to map out, but the way to start realizing what you are good at is to be aware of yourself and what you can do. Write down the things you love to do and also write down the things you do not like to do. What do you do on a daily basis that makes you excited? What can you see yourself doing with the skills that you have? If you get a mental block, ask people who you trust what they think you are good at and compare it with your list of skills. You might be surprised at how positive this exercise can be. Find role models. The quickest and most effective way to find the career spark that

ignites you is to find other people who are doing what you want to be doing. Find people who are moving on a trajectory that you want to jump on. Talk to them. Get to know how they got to where they are and how you can learn from their journey. You never know—they may be the one to give you the key to your important next steps. Carve a path that makes it possible to do what you love. There are no rules, and there is no one-way to do something. Our journeys are what shape us into the people we are supposed to be. If you don’t see a way to make your passion a reality, find a way. If everyone took the same path to where they want to be, no one would be eager to make their path their own. That is what makes it special. It is your journey and no one else’s. Carve a path that is your open road where no one else can push you out of your lane. Do not stop moving. Always be curious, always ask questions, attend events, and immerse yourself in the areas that bring you the most joy in your trade. Keep the next steps in the forefront of your mind. Constant motion and perseverance are the character traits that will build your passion as you continue on your journey.

Claire Friday is a special events producer, writer and career consultant who resides in Las Vegas. She writes a weekly blog entitled Done By Friday that focuses on career advancement advisement and success strategies for the self-employed entrepreneur.
