As we enter the season of giving, we wrap up another year. In doing so, we are excited to bring you this issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine, where we focus on celebrating. Celebrating life, celebrating accomplishments, your failures or setbacks, your journey thus far, the steps you’ve taken forward, as well as the steps you had to take backward … we want to celebrate YOU! Within these pages, you will find articles that encourage you to embrace all the changes that life throws at you, and yet still celebrate. We tend to save celebrations for milestones, but why don’t we shift our mindset and celebrate every day? It’s a choice and celebrating usually is a happy, joyous occasion with excitement and great energy surrounding it. Why would we not want that every day? Why limit ourselves? Adopting this new mindset could change our businesses, employees, children, spouses; essentially everyone we come in contact with. She is proof of what can be done with hard work, dedication and grit. We also highlight several game changers who reside within our community; you will want to learn more about them in “People to Watch in 2020.” We have come a long way since the ‘50s and ‘60s stay-at-home wife or mom mentality. Today, there are so many great resources for having both a fulfilling career and family due to technology and social media. If you have contemplated starting a new career while having a family or vice versa, now is the perfect time and the article, “21st Century Super Woman” reminds us of this. While there are many demands for us women during the holiday season, don’t forget to take a little time out for yourself. We’ve shared some great reads for you to snuggle up with next to a fire, and before you start diving into the pages, fix yourself one of the festive cocktails we share or have your girlfriends over and start a book club. How is it that we are not only ending another year, but also an entire decade? Time waits for no one, right? Before heading into the New Year, it is important to not only take a moment and reflect on where you have been, but also take time to celebrate where you are, regardless of whether or not you crushed your goals for 2019. I would bet that you are further along in at least one aspect of your life right now than you were a year ago. Maybe you were holding down multiple hustles or trying to build a business or grow your brand; hopefully the last year has brought you some sort of growth, be it personal or professional. Whether you are in your 30s and struggling to establish a career, in your 40s wondering why you gave up a career or in your 50s and completely starting over in something … let us toast to ourselves! In this issue, we bring you articles that will lead you to embrace where you are; even if the celebration is around the smaller milestones. We bring articles to motivate you for a happier holiday season, such as “All is Calm, All is Bright” and “Breaking the Chains of Codependency.” And of course, we celebrate with “Wines & Dines” and the annual Holiday Gift Guide. Finally, each year, I talk about how I choose a word to be my theme for the upcoming year. In 2019, I chose “me” in order to concentrate more on myself. And that I did. I started daily walks with my new puppy and found myself putting myself and my well-being first, for once. I found plenty of time to have raw, open and honest conversations with myself. I fought with myself, agreed with myself and asked the universe for impossible things, or so they seemed at the time. While my word for 2020 has not yet been established, I can tell you this: I am continuing where I left off. I may not be where I want to be, but I am on the right path. This year was full of new experiences, which would not have happened if I did not take that time each day to focus on myself. Give yourself grace, embrace where you are and cheers … let’s celebrate.

& NUTRIGENETICS How Genetics and Diet Play a Role i n Yo u r E v e r y d a y L i v i n g By Executive Chef Oscar Sanchez and Nutritionist Jane Villela

Nutrigenomics research, the study of the effects of how genetic variations affect one’s nutrition, takes a general look at how many nutrients or calories an average person should consume and how certain supplements can affect them. This explains why certain people are comfortable eating a high-fat diet and have no issues with cholesterol levels. In some, it is different because they must watch what they eat; if they don’t, their health might take a hit. It is recommended that people find the nutrients that can work for them most effectively. This will help determine the nutrients required specifically by their bodies to determine what works for each genetic type. If researched thoroughly, it has the potential to help treat and prevent diseases through nutrition, if the research determines that genetics affect nutrition. Nutrigenomics has the potential not only to cure diseases, but also prevent them through nutrition. When this is discovered as a solution, there will no longer be diet recommendations where people of different shapes and sizes are given a onesize-fits-all solution. It is a work in progress, and many things are being put into perspective about the study of genes and nutrition. Nutrigenetics looks at the relationship between diet and genetics, and how the health of an individual is affected. It is the foundation of personalized nutrition that is made to fit the person’s vitamin and calorie intake. People respond differently to specific diets, and patients with chronic diseases are genotyped and given ways and strategies on how to reduce their risks and become healthier based on their genes and diet.

It is known through research that our genetic composition influences the outcome of our health in response to the environment and our lifestyle. Personalized nutrition is a new way to keep our health in check. Nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics are exploring the interaction between individual genes and the nutrients they need to sustain the body functions. If an individual wants to eat healthily, work out and be fit, the person should know about the nutrients and how they help their body achieve optimal health. There is genetic analysis being done to find out what foods affect you differently and why some flavors cause you to become allergic or taste differently. If a person wishes to live a healthy lifestyle, then genetic information will help them on their journey of a disease-free life. This is because their genetic information highlights how they gain weight and what foods heighten their desire to eat more. It gives an overview of the foods not to be eaten and what will help them lose weight. What is right for one person does not necessarily mean that it is good for another. Genetics on its own does not determine your health and well-being, but it helps determine your diet and nutrient intake. A nutrition specialist can help with dietary needs by educating you on whether certain diets will work for you or not. They test your genes and draw up a conclusion on your food intake and how it has affected your daily routine. Right now, you are a very fortunate woman; you live in the 21st century. Gone are the days when the only women who ran companies, competed in professional sports, travelled the world for business, sat on the board of global and local charities, studied for doctorates and initiated world class inventions were single, career-focused women. Women who had no husband, children or pets, but made great aunties. I should know, because I am one of them. That was last century and, with the 21st century, we have a new world where technology and social change has blown open the box and even cracked the glass ceiling. We no longer have the great divide between the professional woman and the homemaker. Thanks to technology and social media, every woman has an opportunity to have a career and a family on her terms. You can be a “Super Woman” of your own making. Using her own computer at home, our super woman can start and run her own business, attend university, research and support charities, socialize with other like-minded women, home-school her children, attend a rock concert, create her own events, sell her artwork and cookies, locate investors for her ideas, and even find a husband. The list of what she can do from her home is endless. Prior to the 21st century, life for women who, for whatever reasons, stayed at home lived an isolated and lonely existence. I imagine that they would have felt a little left out and out of touch with the world beyond their front door. It was difficult for them to meet like-

minded people and find people who might be able to help with fleshing out their ideas. There was no Google or YouTube. People had to go to the local library and seek out community groups. Even with these issues, women still tried to get lift off, but it was extremely difficult. The 21st century super woman has everything at her fingertips. Today, we have online universities, venture capital companies created by women for women, entire directories of home employment specifically for women. Hundreds of websites, blogs, groups, Facebook pages created by women in order to provide support and help for other women. Talk about a global movement. You can research and ask as many questions about whatever interests you in the comfort of your home and with anonymity. You do not have to worry about looking silly or uneducated. You have no excuse for not loving the life you have right now. Just in case you need a little more encouragement to feel great about the space you are in, look at these statistics from the 2018 Guidant Financial Group survey of 2,700 women. Ø Four of every 10 U.S. businesses are owned by women Ø Female-led businesses have grown a spectacular 58% from 2007 to 2018 Ø Businesses owned by women generate $3.1 trillion in revenue Pew Research recently found that more women are staying home with their kids now than in recent history: 29% of mothers now stay home with children, a

sharp increase from 23% in 1999. This is by choice because they can stay connected with the outside world. It is a great time to be where you are; whether you want to be a captain of industry looking at the world from your glass walled corner office on Wall Street, or the next world applauded glass artisan, or the winner of the Mother of the Year Award, or the CEO of your consulting business based in your spare room at home. All of us have access to an infinite source of information, help, support, ideas, training, like-minded groups and inspiration. Take advantage of what is in front of you - it just takes time and your willingness to have a go. This is your time to shine. No one is stopping you. Las Vegas is a small community by national standards; however, we are a wonderful melting pot of people from all over the world. Spices add flavor to our food and as such our multicultural neighbors and visitors add flavor and excitement to our community. I mention this because I believe it is the combination of our multicultural community along with technology that has allowed us to be so incredibly global. Women find it natural to speak to other women, and therefore, we have so many female entrepreneurs in Las Vegas who have truly exciting ideas and projects. I migrated from Australia to Las Vegas over a decade ago and I am proud to say that I have met more amazing, innovative, hardworking and heartfelt women here than anywhere else in the world.

How to Get Through the Holidays with Your Self-esteem Intact By Jennifer Battisti

The forthcoming holidays can bring up several emotions: joy, happiness, nostalgia, and also, grief, loneliness and downright panic. Marketing campaigns typically feed us images of the warm and fuzzy holiday ideas—family, savory winter feasts, a fireplace depicting connection and relaxation, and yet … I don’t know about you, but I’ve been having a very different experience than the ones fashioned for the consumer in us. Last year was my first Christmas as a divorced single mother. When I attempted to erect the three-section, eight-foot artificial tree that I acquired in the divorce, I could not attach the A portion to the B portion without help. This was a two person job. A job I imagined I would have had help with, in sickness and health. I am not a quitter, so I kept trying, determined. I wrestled with the fake tree for a good hour, muscling all of the independent feminist grit I could muster. But it was pointless. I was alone and the holidays were salt in my wounds. The festive act of unpacking the holiday decorations and not being capable of building the basic foundation for all of the “joy” to spring forth from had unearthed my grief, as tangled and frustrating as the Christmas lights. I lay on the ground and had a full-on tinsel-throwing meltdown. I called my best friend in tears. I explained how I could not greet this season in any jolly manner. I could not be merry, because the holidays were already making me feel like a failure. The holidays can feel isolating, financially and emotionally overwhelming, and contradictory to your personal or family value system. Am I the only one on December 24th bewildered in a Target parking lot strategically hunting for a parking space, wondering how I signed up for this? Am I the only one who sees that all is not calm and bright as the days get crossed off the calendar? Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot I love about the holiday season. It is an opportunity to gather with the ones you love, be of service to others, make memories together, but I wonder though … can we get real? About the unrealistic expectations, the demands, the way the holiday season can make us feel excluded? Can we decide our own traditions and set healthy boundaries about our abilities? Can we acknowledge the impossible red-nosed reindeer in the room? A simple setting aside for pre-season reflection can work miracles in staying grounded. Ask yourself if your holiday philosophy is in alignment with your life and beliefs. Perhaps it is changing or evolving. Maybe your kids are grown; what this season might mean is more down time to relax or travel. Maybe you are without family and this season means volunteering at a local charity. Maybe you value experiences over material and this season means hiking with others in our beautiful Mojave Desert. I have to spilt the holidays with my ex-husband, and so the holidays look a little different than they used to. I can use my solo time to see friends, or recharge with yoga and meditation. But it is all winning and it is all going to be okay. This bears repeating: It is all going to be okay! Write down what makes you happy during the holidays and do more of that, cut out the stuff that brings you anxiety. Discuss it with your family: what rituals are important to your family? Lastly, be sure to let your realness illuminate. Our imperfect, messy, enormous, striving hearts need to be seen and shown to others; in the shopping malls, Costco, the airport. Deck the halls with your humanness. It is okay to say “mistle-whoa” to folks who ask you to participate in activities that do not feed your holiday soul. It is okay to need more solitude during the holidays because you are absorbing the frenzy swirling in the atmosphere. Mail out a Christmas card with your real life on it; social media post about your normal, frenzied, and sometimes scared and tired selves. You are extending an invitation for others to show up as themselves as well. Now that is the kind of holiday party I would like to attend. Winter 2019 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

I n t r o d u c i n g U n i t e d Wa y ’s N e w Philanthropic Group for Women What is sisterhood, and what does it mean for Southern Nevada? It means women coming together, using their collective power to make a difference and build a better community. It means women uniting to lift up Southern Nevada and lift each other up. To us, sisterhood has a name: Women United. “A lot of women who are starting out in their careers or may be retiring from the workforce don’t necessarily see themselves as leaders, so we are changing our Women’s Leadership Council name,” shared Lori Algieri, Director of Major Gifts at United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN). “We’re excited to share that we are now Women United, and we invite every woman in Southern Nevada to join us and make a difference as a member.” Women United (WU) has been Southern Nevada’s premier philanthropic group for women since its creation. Members have invested $2.8 million in the community for deserving organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada, Spread the Word Nevada and The Shade Tree. Most recently, WU collaborated with UWSN to undertake an ambitious $1 million, three-year funding commitment with seven partners working to support the community from cradle to career. Last year, members worked with UWSN to provide 1,257 early education scholarships; offer free tutoring to 2,089 students; help 519 students graduate high school; and provide job training to 478 adults. In addition to their funding, WU members have committed over 6,500 volunteer hours since the inception of the group through events like their annual Suit Drive. “This is a tangible way for women in our community to give back and donate

not only their resources, but also their time as well,” shared Algieri. Every year, over 10,000 items of professional clothing are donated to organizations with back-to-work programs for women to help them re-enter the workforce and find success in a new job. While making an impact in the community is the main benefit of membership in Women United, members still make time for networking and engagement. Monthly events for members and their guests bring the group together for professional development opportunities, like social media training, or bonding and connection experiences like shopping events or visits to local community organizations. “We focus on building up our members, whatever form that takes,” said Algieri. “We want this group to be a way for women to connect with like-minded females to better our community and have fun together!” A favorite Women United event is the yearly Luncheon Fashion Show, planned for March 2020 at the Bellagio Las Vegas. Women from across the city spend the afternoon viewing the latest spring fashions, enjoying a delicious meal, and hearing how their investment in the community has made a difference. The Luncheon Fashion Show is a celebration of how women are leading the charge and inspiring the positive change that Southern Nevada needs. At its heart, Women United is a sisterhood of members coming together to strengthen each other and the community they call home. “We are truly uniting for the betterment of our community, which makes this change so appropriate,” said Algieri. “We are thrilled to show Southern Nevada the power of Women United.”

½ ounce creme de cocoa 1 scoop vanilla ice cream

Hot White Russian 2 ½ cups freshly brewed coffee ½ cup heavy cream ½ cup coffee-flavored liqueur

¼ cup vodka Whipped heavy cream for garnish

In a saucepan, heat the coffee, cream, coffee-flavored liqueur and vodka until hot. Divide the mixture among heated mugs and garnish each drink with whipped cream.

Blackberry Mulled Wine 1 bottle red wine 2 cinnamon sticks, plus extra for garnish 5 cloves, plus extra for garnish 2 star anise, plus extra for garnish

Add vanilla vodka, creme de cocoa and coffee-flavored liqueur into a shaker. Drop in about 3 ice cubes. Close the shaker and shake until the liquid is chilled. Pour over ice cream.

Combine the cinnamon syrup, lime juice and cranberry juice in a cocktail shaker and shake with ice. Pour into a Collins glass over ice. Top with ginger beer and garnish with fresh cranberries and rosemary sprig.

1 ounce cream Top with cola

The main idea that lies behind the concept is to break the code of traditional gastronomy by focusing on the plating, ingredients and essential steps of service.” As a result, you can have a great food experience with great service at $55 per person. Their OpenTable profile reflects their approach perfectly, and they are really proud of it. Eatt Gourmet Bistro has been elected top restaurant on OpenTable in Las Vegas for the last few months, with ratings close to perfection. The restaurant goes to great lengths to ensure it remains fresh and exciting in diners’ minds. Their philosophy is to work with seasonal products to guarantee the freshest recipes to valued guests. Menus are typically changed in April and October for summer and winter to make sure that guests can always have a different experience at each menu change, while keeping some signature dishes their clients come for. In addition to those seasonal changes, they add daily specials made with fresh and seasonal ingredients. However, no matter how they prepare their duck or salmon, they are the bestselling entrees. One popular signature dish that remains

on the menu is the lobster linguine, made with Chef Yuri’s signature lobster bisque, and it is to die for. Executive Chef Yuri Szarzewski is also a partner in the business and has been with Kalpokdjian since the very beginning. The pair try to source as many local ingredients as possible. They manage to find seasonal vegetables in a local farm, as well as honey and organic vegan cheese made locally. All of their organic microgreens are grown in Las Vegas. There is also a vegan menu featuring 11 items, and a vegan special every Monday. They also carry 15 gluten-free items on the regular menu, including desserts. To be consistent with their “gastronomic approach,” Kalpokdjian explains, “We thought that offering a five-course tasting menu at a very competitive price would be very relevant to offer a different experience for our guests who just want to sit and relax while Chef is designing something special for them.” Wines are discounted by 50% on Wednesdays. They wanted to share their French wine list with guests as much as possible and created a day to enjoy the wines that might not be ordered otherwise. GRAFFITI BAO BY CHEF MARC MARRONE By Milena DiFiore, Photography by Graffiti Hospitality Chef Marc Marrone’s favorite part of the day is right before lunch. “Right before things get moving and started, it is fun to have a last moment of fun, one-on-one with staff,” he says. It is clear why that moment before the storm is one he relishes in … the guy goes big or goes home.

The intimate spot’s energy is captured in timeless neon and personal anecdotes, such as the bags of the Hong Kong flour used to make the bao buns, and diners dancing the dance of securing the next available table. The constant video loop of ‘80s camp classic “Big Trouble in Little China” is the most apt bit of homage paid to Marrone’s upbringing in New York City. He explains, “There are so many underground and wild, crazy things happening. ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ captured the essence of having a little mystery and fun in the world.” Recounting the many influential Chinese takeout meals in the city with his dad, in addition to Marrone’s constant inspiration from the Asian night markets he frequented, his passion toward all Asian foods is more than apparent. He refuses

With a fine balance of simplistic and complex dishes (see the Singapore-style ramen and feel your eyes widen), it is easy to make your way through the menu and educate your palate at your own pace. But of course, it is hard to resist just about everything there is. Just when you think you have your order figured out, you see the Szechuan chicken dumplings sloshing around in the bath of black vinegar and chili oil dropped at the table beside you and now you are rethinking everything. “Other Stuff” (as the menu puts it) worth mentioning would entail the scallion pancake (but ensure it is the one with the burrata cheese and chili oil) and no doubt the crispy wings. It was all a dream to provide a scalable concept with a comfortable environment that does not break the bank, and Marrone is proof that even the neon dreams can become a reality.

After closing the chapter to his 13-year role at Tao as corporate chef and, in addition to Graffiti Bao, opening two other restaurant concepts within a year (Graffiti Bao’s prototype and nachoria, Piña, at T-Mobile Arena), along with two more in the pipeline, his “busyness” only makes sense to be emulated during Graffiti Bao’s lunch rush. And let’s face it, Graffiti Bao is busy.

We all have the big dream or goal that we strive for daily. Perhaps we are looking to make a mark in the industry we work in, receive a job promotion or even pay off debt. In order to achieve any of this, we must be able to celebrate the small, daily victories that come about. The small victories are just as crucial as larger victories, and we need to pay close attention when they happen. Recognizing and celebrating these moments paves the way for the realization of that big goal or dream. Some of the best teachers are the steps we take while on the way to something bigger; the process sets us up for more success. It is important to pay attention to how the small victory came about and what steps we took to get there. Even if it is as simple as crossing two things off of your to-do list that you needed to get done to drive the big goal; it all counts. Ask yourself each day what you accomplished and how you arrived at that triumph. Applaud each milestone. Celebration is a great motivator. If we take pride in our wins and celebrate the day-today, we will appreciate the long-term pay off. The small victories give us the motivation to continue working toward our goals and dreams. Keeping a positive attitude will also help maintain your motivation and improve your desire to keep moving forward on those goals. Consistency in creating small victories produces repetitive achievements. Every day,

strive to make progress and create these triumphs, no matter what area they fall into. What can you do to keep the momentum going on a daily basis? Nothing is more effective than consistency and persistence, and those are two areas that should receive daily attention. One of the true tests in seeing these victories is practicing consistency in your work ethic. Effort is a win. The fact that you got in your car and took your kids to school, made that phone call to a potential client, or even wrote two paragraphs about the steps needed for your next big idea; you are already making a dent in your day. The effort that is exhausted daily is worth noting as a small victory. Act as if the victory is already yours. If you do not have the mentality of someone who expects good things to happen, you will not see your triumphs. Even when you cannot see them, celebrate them taking place. Make a point to shape your thinking for a commemoration of the things that have happened and what is to come. CHASING JOY Celebration of Unlearning By Jan Tanaka I’m leaving my job. It is a great job with excellent benefits and healthy wages, so maybe it seems crazy to quit, but I have my reasons. I told everyone that I am leaving because of the stress, because I am trying to have a baby and need a calmer lifestyle. And while that is true, there is more to the story than I was letting on. I am leaving because I am not happy. I have been allowing this job to consume me; there is no extra time for the things that bring me joy; like networking, speaking and writing. But “I’m not happy” does not feel, to me, like an acceptable reason to quit an amazing job. I learned long ago—I was maybe 5 or 6 years old—that my joy and my desires are not a priority. I had asked my grandmother if I could have some chocolate milk, and I wanted to drink it out of a baby bottle. Not because I was a baby, but because it was fun. Because it brought me joy. Because I simply wanted to. My parents did not approve. They shamed me for my desire to drink chocolate milk from a baby bottle. They yelled and criticized me. It did not stop me from drinking from the bottle, however. I continued to do so, but secretly, hiding it under the bed or beneath the covers when they came by. It was clear to me that the things that made me happy were not to be flaunted, not to be enjoyed out in the open, but kept under wraps and hidden away. This lesson has colored my life even through adulthood. Keeping my joys and desires private became a matter of survival and this privacy meant that I grew up fiercely independent. It wasn’t until about 18 years ago when a friend of mine said, “You have to let people love you,” that I realized how much I had been missing … and how much I had been holding back. This revelation came at a time when I was moving, stressed and overwhelmed and refusing help. I was trying to do it all on my own. But I was not only keeping joy from myself—I was also keeping it from others. It brings people joy to help someone else! There is a sense of purpose that fills us when we are allowed to offer assistance and support. We

feel honored when someone is vulnerable enough with us to say, “I cannot do this alone.” My desperate independence was a lose-lose mentality, and I was finally able to see that in all its deep-seated glory. So I began to embody a new lesson: that joy shown is joy shared. As I slowly and deliberately unlearned my independence, I realized that true, genuine joy has no boundaries. You cannot truly, fully, deliciously enjoy something if you are ashamed of it and if you feel you must keep it hidden. Neither can you manifest your greatest desires if you feel the need to keep them under wraps. Like a seed, they require room to breathe and they will not grow in darkness, but only in the light. So yes, I am leaving my job because of my plans to conceive a child. But I am also leaving because I am chasing after my joy. I am returning to a wonderful company that I used to work for and a position that I love. I will have a schedule and a space that allows me the time to pursue my passions. And I know that when I am happy and fulfilled in this way, I will be able to bring so much more good into the lives of those around me, and into the world as a whole. Why does it matter so much where you find your joy? Maybe you love dancing in the rain, and your neighbors think you are ridiculous. Maybe you are happiest living in a van, always on the road, and your family thinks you are nuts. Or maybe you enjoy a bottle filled with chocolate milk from time to time, because it brings you a sense of peace and comfort. Who cares? What matters is that you claim it! What matters is that you are happy! Maybe you will even inspire someone to claim their own joy in the process. And one day, when I have a child of my own, this is the lesson I will share with them, and this is the example I will live for them: that happiness, in and of itself, is a valid answer to any question. A celebration means to acknowledge a significant event, person or time of life. Every moment of your life can be a reason to celebrate. In reality, you are truly the most significant person in your life. Every breath you take is the most significant time of your life. And each day of your life is an event of significant magnitude. This is how we should acknowledge our lives. With this perspective, there is no logical reason to wait on celebrating anything. Each moment that you acknowledge your powerful significance can be a celebration. When you value and realize the extraordinary miracle you are, celebrations can become a way of life rather than infrequent moments in time. This takes a radical shift in perspective. Can you do it? Do you want to do it? Do you believe you can do it? Do you want to learn how? You may think it is impossible. You might believe it is ridiculous to have these aspirations. You may stop reading right now, thinking that I am senseless. The truth is that you were created to live in joy and to celebrate every moment of your life. You can experience so many miraculous moments in time, if you view your life from this perspective. This is not woo-woo talk. You can shift your perceptions about yourself and learn to create this new reality. This way of celebrating life and feeling your significance is found when you live in the “Goodness of Now.” The Goodness Experience allows you to acknowledge everything about yourself as significant. Goodness allows you to feel every experience you encounter as a celebration. You begin to attract only people and experiences that give you reasons to celebrate. You only need to learn to stop the sloppy thinking that makes you feel badly. Activate your imagination and focus to see the good that surrounds you now. Allow yourself the pleasure to feel the exuberance that goodness brings you. Use good feelings as your guide to live the life you want. Feeling good is your compass; it will lead you to amazing experiences and miraculous reasons to celebrate your life. Feeling good is why we celebrate! So if you focus

on how you feel and celebrate feeling good, every moment of your life will be and can be a celebration. Why wait? We celebrate so we can feel good. Why not feel good first and then every moment becomes a celebration? It is simple, but not easy. We think that we have to wait for a special occasion to celebrate. When you view every day of your life as special, your whole life can be celebrated now. This takes practice, focus and a commitment to care about how you feel. You get there by living in your powerful now and not the past. It takes seeing yourself and your life as significant. It takes demanding yourself to be in alignment with your source energy, your goodness, your G.O.D. When you realize the significance of which you are, you will want to find ways of celebrating. You will not wait for a special event or time, because every moment sparkles with Champagne moments that effervesce with joy and happiness. If you are looking for your purpose in life, celebrating life is high on the list. When we celebrate births, anniversaries, new jobs, graduations, marriages, achieving our goals, promotions, endings and beginnings, we feel alive and filled with awe. Every day can be this way when you focus on how you feel and decide to feel good, no matter what your circumstance. Don’t wait to celebrate to feel good. Use your focus to feel good and celebrations will occur magically in every area of your life. Don’t take my word for it. Try it. Feeling good is always a choice; your choice. You can blame others for your poor moods, but in reality they have nothing to do with your free will to feel good. Using this new tool of deciding to feel good is empowering. It is life enhancing and releases powerful chemicals in your body to stay healthy. Make feeling good your goal every day and you will never have to wait to celebrate. Cheers!

THE CHAINS OF CODEPENDENCY Learning How to Say No and Set Healthy Boundaries By Ava Mucikyan

“Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves even when we risk disappointing others.” – Brené Brown Are you Facebook and Instagram happy or are you genuinely and truly happy with your life? Do you know the difference? Take a look at your relationships with your husband or wife; boyfriend or girlfriend; children; family or friends. Do you find that you dedicate yourself fully to their happiness, while complaining that you never have time for yourself, yet somehow it becomes their fault? These are classic examples of codependent behavior. Codependency is defined as a behavioral condition in a relationship where one person enables another, such as through an addiction, poor mental health, immaturity, irresponsibility or under-achievement. Among the core characteristics of codependency is an excessive reliance on other people for approval and a sense of identity. Here are some hidden issues behind codependent behavior: 1. People pleasing / low self-esteem / need for validation 2. Fear of being rejected / alone 3. Inability to communicate your needs and set healthy boundaries The majority of families in the generations prior to millennials lived in codependent relationships. The only difference is that before our current times, divorce was shamed so people would tolerate dysfunctional unions. Now they just move to the next union without fixing the dysfunction. Codependent people take on too much responsibility and that is not a healthy behavior. But how can being a naturally giving person be a bad thing, you might think? It is actually a major disservice

to those with whom you have a relationship. It is such a codependent pattern to go along with whatever the other one wants. As you know, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. If you resonated to the above statements, here is your wake-up call: you have a problem. The second step is to figure out what you want in any given situation. It seems quite simple, but most people have a difficult time figuring that out. “Whatever you want,” was often my response pattern to almost every question. This is a very dangerous habit, because all of us have wants, and we need to learn how to access them, and, most importantly, communicate them. Of course, we may often have a hard time knowing what we want. Generally, we grow up being conditioned by our parents, who get to decide what we eat and how much of it, or what we wear, and most of us have not been given much of a choice in anything. Then, you grow up, get married and start catering to the needs of your family. After my divorce, I personally had a difficult time answering the question, “What do you want for breakfast?” I had no idea how I liked my eggs, as I always prepared breakfast for others, and sort of ended up eating what’s available. In 10 years of being in a committed relationship, I never made a meal for myself. It took me almost two years after separating to start getting to know myself. That was an extensive time of self-care, traveling, trying out new things, and reconnecting with the old me, old friends, revisiting places of childhood, spending time alone, meditating and reading selfhelp books. The key out of codependency is creating a life you love and not giving up on yourself for anyone. Coexist, don’t co-depend; set healthy boundaries.

FROM ENTERTAINER TO ENTREPRENEUR By Roselyn Poon

Susi Engl is driven by her passion to help people grow both personally and in business. She is a great example of a successful business person, whether it is a man or woman. It was obvious from the get-go that Susi takes full responsibility for creating her future and she is determined to make a success of every challenge she sets her laser focus on. Unlike a lot of businesspeople, Susi understands that she has to believe in herself, and if her business is to grow, she needs to back up her belief with investing cold, hard cash into promoting her business. Belief alone is not going to cut it. Susi is the CEO and owner of the award-winning LV Craft Shows. The show was originally founded in 1999 by Judi Palumbo, who decided in 2015 it was time for her to sell and explore the United States. Susi took it over in late 2015, but it was much smaller than what it is now. At that time the show had fewer vendors and lower attendance. Palumbo helped Susi a great deal and gave her all of her leads, her website and mentored Susi for the first year.

It was hard going; however, Susi believed in the show and decided that the best way to grow was to advertise. She knew that the main problem was awareness. People interested in crafts needed to know that the show existed and, at the same time, she knew that vendors would participate in her show if they could see it was being promoted. Susi invested her time and money to improve the shows for both vendors and attendees by advertising wherever she could: TV, radio, banners, billboards, social media, newspapers and the list goes on. Over the next couple of years, the attendance went from a few hundred per show to over 1,000 and over 2,000 per show last year. During Easter time, the show attracted 5,400 guests, and the M Resort show had 8,000 guests over the three days. These days, Susi has a new problem, and that is finding venues large enough to accommodate her craft shows. They have become so popular she has a vendor waiting list and is now in the enviable position of being able to limit vendors to those who genuinely handcraft their work. These are the types of problems any businessperson would love to have. LV Craft Shows has won the Review Journal’s “Best of Las Vegas” award three years in a row, and this year they won three categories: silver for “Best Arts and Culture” event, and double bronze for “Best Place to Buy a Unique Gift,” and” Best Antiques and Collectibles.” Susi is always looking to the future and she is now working toward adding more threeday shows with quality vendors at exciting venues while still running some one-day shows, but at more selective locations. Susi’s mantra is “quality over quantity.” She attributes their three “Best of Las Vegas” wins to widespread advertising and an amazing group of vendors who are obviously super supportive. She is not content with her current level of advertising and promotion and is actively seeking some serious sponsors to help expand her marketing so that she can help her vendors get even more exposure and success. Speaking of exposure, she asked me to invite everyone to the big three-day Arts, Crafts, & Gift Festival coming up Nov. 22 to 24 at Texas Station. You have to love a woman on a mission. Susi’s mission started somewhat different to what you might imagine. She was born in 1965 in Munich, Germany into an entertainment family. Her mother and stepfather were actors and her mother also taught dance at her own studio. Susi started

modeling and acting on TV, movies and theater from the age of 4. She also learned to dance and subsequently taught dance, yoga and fitness. All of this before she was 20, when she embarked on her global travels. In 1992, Susi, at age 27, moved to California where at first she taught dance and fitness. However, it was not long before she was the lead dancer in shows like “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “The Nutcracker,” where she was also the assistant director. She joined a dance troupe and was fortunate to spend three seasons in Japan followed by a season on a cruise ship where she met the love of her life and musician extraordinaire, Jeff. Now a couple, they decided to set up in Las Vegas where Susi continued teaching dance, fitness and yoga, while Jeff joined the local music fraternity.

Many years prior to LV Craft Shows, Susi became interested in product promotion and event planning. Susi was a personal trainer to a Las Vegas family, and the mother was a fledgling author of children’s books. Susi is multi-lingual and noticed that some of the author’s French phrasing was not quite correct, and this was the start of her move into publishing. Her client subsequently asked for some editorial help with the children’s book and one thing led to another. Before she knew it, Susi was up to her eyes in the book production and promotion industry. Her enthusiasm to get involved and help whenever and wherever possible is not limited to business. Susi has personally been rescuing animals since 2004 and, in 2016, she joined forces with a dear friend and they co-founded Sir’s Rescue Rangers, a local nonprofit organization. The charity is in memoriam of Sir, her friend’s dearly departed English mastiff. They focus on rescuing animals and placing them in loving foster homes while local veterinarians bring the animals back to good health, at which point the animals are placed into permanent homes. They ensure that the animals are placed into not just any home, but the right home. Susi’s craft shows participate in the fundraising by conducting specific raffles for Sir’s Rescue Rangers. All the monies from these raffles go toward the charities ongoing vet bill at the Grand Montecito Animal Hospital. Since Susi was born into the entertainment industry and started life as a trained dancer, actor and model, her education was centered on entertainment, not business and marketing. However, she never let the absence of formal business training get in her way. She is a wonderfully energized selftaught role model for anyone who wants to grow their ideas and make a difference.

We are living in a new day. We are absolutely able to be free from anything that is holding us back. We can think the way we want. We can move forward, break through barriers and stop long enough to take into consideration where we are now, and how far we have come. It is a shame this is not taught in kindergarten, or on television, but taking a fearless moral inventory of your life is completely acceptable. Let me allow you to congratulate yourself. Longing for days in the past, or have hope for the future is common practice, but tapping into the “you” that you have become is a great practice. This type of thinking could be called awareness. I feel most alive when I am “in the now” conscious of my life. This alert, now, being rather than the strife of do-do-doing is a calming assuring way to BE. Living in the past tends to bring pain, whereas always thinking about the future can leave you feeling fearful or unsure. However, if you are living one day at a time, and appreciating where you are, there is much more freedom. I would like to add, thinking about yourself—and not how others are living—is also a great way to keep a healthy perspective. To take this a step further, think of how much time you have squandered away while wishing things were different? The “if onlys” are a terrible waste of time. How about this, the people that have curly hair all wish they had straight hair, the tall folks wish they were shorter and so on and so on. Let us consider the concept of: It is what it is. Acceptance is a beautiful thing! I would like to challenge you in your finest moment, right now, to consider your life and where you are. It helps when you pull back and get a hawk-eye perspective, rather than nit-picking all the little things. Look from a higher perspective over your entire life journey that led you to where you are now. Next, celebrate. Give honor to all that you have overcome. Notice the amazing talents, skills and pathfinding you did to get where you are right now in this moment. This waking up to yourself is all it takes to keep going stronger. Staying in the mundane and minutia of life is heavy and not quite as productive. To take this “honing into me and my life” concept even further, think about how you are with people. What do you bring to the table? How are you with others? Acknowledging all these aspects allows you to change what you do not like in a compassionate

way. This perspective also helps you to acknowledge you and all you do. This is healthy and necessary. Let’s not waste any more time hoping for better days, shall we? Let’s live in the yes of life and get our heads in the here and now. This allows you to be happy now, not when you win the lottery, lose five pounds, when you finish your degree, when the kids grow up, or when they come back home to visit. You can choose to appreciate, honor and love where you are now. As I write this article, I am on a plane, and I just had the craziest thought, “I am so good right now. I do not need anything right now, I do not have to do anything right now, I am not hot or cold, and I have plenty of room. It is a wonder, but I am alright right now.” Think about that. You can probably catch yourself being so good right now much more often when you are aware of it rather than looking for what is wrong. Catch yourself being proud of yourself. In 1949 only 5.5% of entering medical school students were women, with 6% of the physician workforce comprised of women. In 2017, the Association of American Medical Colleges reported that the number of women enrolled in medical schools exceeded the number of men for the first time. Now, nearly 40% of working physicians are women.

With an abbreviated media background devoted only to her winning pageants, one could easily envision her living a life generally devoid of any gritty personal challenges.

Why the change? Because of people like Alexis Hilts, a member of the third class of UNLV School of Medicine students. She has used her public forum as Miss Nevada 2018 and as a contestant in the 2018 Miss America pageant to argue for far more diversity in all fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

She was 13 when her family life dramatically changed. Her parents’ tumultuous divorce left her caring for her 5-year-old sister. She fed her, took her to school and served as a parental figure.

As so often happens, however, a presumption made off of scant information is well off the mark.

As a little girl, Hilts often asked her father about a plaque on the wall of their home that depicted a lake in rural Canada. Engraved on the artwork were the words, “Hilts Lake.”

Born and raised in Las Vegas, the 24-yearold summa cum laude graduate of the UNLV Honors College is largely known through the media as the young woman who won the 2018 Miss Nevada pageant that sent her as the state’s representative to the Miss America pageant.

Engineering occupations have the lowest share of women at 14%. Women comprise only one-fourth of workers in computer occupations. Only 7% of African-American adults with a bachelor’s degree or higher are in the STEM workforce. College-educated Hispanics are just 6% of STEM workers. After researching the disparity of minority representation in STEM, the young woman who earned bachelor’s degrees in biology and political science with a minor in neuroscience, created the “More than a Princess” program to encourage students, particularly women, to pursue careers in STEM. She went into area schools to introduce students to figures in the sciences they may not have heard about.

“I want all young people to see what they can accomplish,” said Hilts.

The body of water was named after her grandfather, who had been a physician in a small Canadian town. “From a young age I have wanted to be like my grandfather, a physician with a profound impact on the community,” Hilts said.

Born in 1921, she went on to do groundbreaking work on the causes of heart attacks. Hilts has come to realize that everyone is facing their own battles in life. “My grandfather battled cancer ... GO WHERE YOU ARE WELCOME The Art of Being Happy in the Now By Dr. Tiger Devore If we are constantly taking exception to where we are, what we have, how we look, or what we have accomplished, then there is no escaping the lack of satisfaction or happiness with the moment we are experiencing. Patients will often say things to me such as, “So much is good in my life, but I will not be happy until …” They insert something, whether it's improving their body or meeting the right person, getting the right job and income, or completing the divorce, that “something” will be between whomever I am sitting in front of and their ability to enjoy life. I watch people struggle with acceptance from others, be it in their social circle or their online presence, and everyone looks for a reason or a thing to focus on improving; something they need to do in order to gain the status that eludes them and prevents them from the life they really want. Worrying about identifying and accomplishing that “something” guarantees that right now will not be satisfying. Many people will allow themselves the excuse that waiting for the “when” to arrive is better than admitting they simply do not like the way they are right now. Don’t get me wrong, self-improvement is a good and useful effort toward a goal, but to count oneself out of enjoying life in the meantime is dangerous to the self and to building a sustainable self-esteem.

communicating to us that if we have something, there is a good chance we will lose it and need to protect it, or there is something we need that will make us more appealing to meet that status goal. The remaining advertising is directed toward comforting us, with toys or food or another distraction, so we can take respite from all those other fears. If we are not running from the fear of general rejection, what else is possible for us? The alternative is directly in opposition to the culture of needing to buy another thing to make us feel good. Liking who you are right now, as you are, with no apology or militant demand of those around you to like you too is a great place to start this change of thinking and being. All those goals that were intended to be appealing to others, all of those can be used as enticements to the self, rewards to the self, the wish to set a goal and be happy with having accomplished it for yourself, not for an external audience. When I hear people looking at the numbers of followers they have on social media, or how long it has been since they have had a date, I really have to ask, “How many do you need?” So often the requirements are set for the attention one seeks from a rarified crowd of idealistic others, making most of the available others unqualified.

If my value and ability to be found acceptable to others are built on a status to accomplish, my chances of being able to maintain that status, let alone accomplish it, puts me in the position of being very unstable. So many of those things may not only be difficult to attain, but even more difficult to maintain.

People may have to get used to going where they are welcome, where the others they meet are happy and interested in meeting or dating them, or where they want to work or demonstrate accomplishment is really within their grasp, as opposed to having expectations set so high that satisfaction in daily living becomes simply impossible to achieve.

Much of our culture is built upon capitalizing on the insecurity borne from “you are not there yet” general message. Most advertising is built upon

This Winter Greet Guests and Buyers with a Great First Impression By Rhianna Miller

Nothing says welcome like a front porch, and your front entryway speaks volumes about your home—make it warm and welcoming with a few simple tips. Give your door a fresh coat of paint, update house numbers and lighting fixtures and hang a winter wreath on the door. If your home has a covered porch or entry area, add a bench or other seating and dress them up with a cozy marshmallow or faux fur throw and outdoor pillows in warm winter leaf like hues with plaid or cooler weather designs. Add some outdoor lanterns to give the space ambiance and a feeling of warmth. Accessories such as a box of logs or a big jar of pine cones will complete the cozy look. Place a couple of season decorations, like snowmen, on either side of the entry and include a stylish welcome mat in a winter theme to show buyers and guests that they are entering a warm and inviting space. These gestures are easily the most important to your overall curb appeal and can make all the difference.

Make a good first impression. A prospective buyer’s first impression of a home is the exterior. Make sure to rake any leaves, trim bushes, clean gutters and use seasonal flowers or greens to keep the exterior looking fresh. Remember, curb appeal is as important as the interior. It is the first thing that your potential buyers will see. Winter mulching. Use rubber mulch to beautify flowerbeds, shrubs or just about any outdoor area that would typically be covered with traditional mulch. Rubber Mulch will keep moisture where it needs to be and prevent weeds from taking hold, while keeping soil temperature even for tender plants. In addition, it will not blow away and is weather resistant, so it will stay put and look good no matter what the season. With Rubber Mulch, you can also select from a variety of colors to design the aesthetic look of winter. Plant evergreens and boxwoods. Plants that retain their green during winter add a freshness that is hard to come by during the colder months. Plant hedges and bushes around your home and add pots to your front porch. Don’t forget to keep them neat and trimmed. Paint away. A fresh coat of paint is a very cost effective way to freshen the interior of your home. Select rich shades of brown or cream that provide a cozy and neutral backdrop. Use accessories like pillows and throws in warm, winter-like tones to add pops of color. The smells of winter. Find opportunities to use winter scents, including berries and pine, in your home. Candles can be an effective way to fill your home with a winter scent, just be sure to burn them for a while before guests or buyers get there. Light it up. As days start to get shorter in winter, the importance of well-lit rooms becomes paramount. Before any house showings, make sure to turn on all lights, open the blinds, open the shutters and push back the drapes on every window. If there are any rooms without windows, make sure to accessorize with lamps. If your home has an electric fireplace, turn that on as well to invite guests to relax and imagine themselves living in the house. Add space. Natural or artificial light makes rooms look bright and big. Warm accents, like decorative pillows, vases and house plants tend to make people

relax. Decluttering and organizing is crucial if you want to make the rooms in the home look more spacious. Do a deep cleaning of the entire home. You would be surprised at how closely prospective buyers will look at baseboards, cabinets and sinks. Along these same lines, go through the house and declutter. Organize household items and keep them out of sight. Make the fireplace a focal point. This is the time of year that potential buyers can most see themselves cuddled up on the couch with a good book. Consider staging a small sitting area around it. Exterior maintenance. Tend to needed updates. Power wash the exterior to clean up the vinyl and wood siding, repair any loose shingles, replace roofing that is leaking or damaged, clean gutters and downspouts, repair or replace old windows, and seal cracks with caulking. Remember that maintenance is important even if the updates are not visible by driving by your house. Fix-up windows and trim. Replace broken glass, fix the caulking, scrape and paint the trim, and clean the inside and outside of the windows until they shine. Brackets and decorative moldings can also really make your exterior pop and are easy to install. Add a couple of window boxes to offer a cottage-like, homey appeal. Add outdoor lighting. Consider adding outdoor lighting that will add interest and warmth to your home during the darker months when daylight is limited. The outside of your home may look dreary and dark, but updated wall mount lighting and hanging lanterns will give your home a much needed warm glow during this time. Think about adding lighting to the landscaping and walkway, a hanging pendant light to the front doorway and additional lighting near the garage. Do not forget about your driveway and sidewalks. Keep the driveway and sidewalks clear of leaves, branches and debris. Make sure your driveway and sidewalks look tidy, even if they are not in their spring or summer prime. Rake up the leaves and make sure all your summer décor is put away for the winter months, along with dead summer plants and planter. Fill in any cracks in your driveway to prevent further damage from the weather.

She is trained and specializes in newborn photography. One of the biggest takeaways she learned from her training is newborn safety. This is an absolute must for herself and her assistant when they have any newborn in the studio. Teri absolutely adores all the little ones who come into the studio to see her.

During the consultation portion of the appointment, clients, in conjunction with the artist, select from a number of available options, such as airbrush or traditional foundation, false lashes and clip in extensions. While this is a personal choice, of course, let’s face it, more hair equals more options!

Her motivation is her clients and giving them an experience of a lifetime. Teri takes this responsibility very seriously and starts building relationships with clients from the very first conversation. They trust in her to capture their memories and she strives to create those moments in time; from flying in the air to walking hand in hand with the family. She has an associate degree for business management and photography, and is currently going to school for her bachelor’s in business management. Marcella Williams has stretched her passion for organics and clean eating beyond her own kitchen as co-founder and COO of The Juice Standard (TJS). Williams oversees the company’s human resources and ensures that employees channel and represent TJS’s standards, core culture, and dayto-day, customer-driven environment.

In 1999, Dr. Renee Coffman co-founded Roseman University of Health Sciences as the first pharmacy school in Nevada. Celebrating its 20th Anniversary, the Henderson-based, nonprofit university has grown to educate new generations of competent and caring pharmacists, nurses and dentists to strengthen healthcare in our communities.

L a s Ve ga s Wo m a n M a ga z i n e Cover Party Photography by David Orlov, James Lutz and Brandi Doss Once again, over 2,000 guests attended the Las Vegas Woman magazine’s Fall Cover Party, which was held at the beautiful Emerald at Queensridge. Swag bags were given out to the first 200 guests with samples, coupons and goodies. The reveal of the cover, featuring the eight women highlighted in the cover story, “Women Empowering Women,” took center stage at the event. Delightful cocktails were provided by Deep Eddy Vodka and Lee’s Discount Liquor, delicious bites were provided by Diamonds Events, Oscar Catering and Emerald at Queensridge. High Flyin’ Entertainment kept the energy level high and a special performance by Aussie Heat entertained the crowd, along with the fashion show featuring Eccoci fall fashions, while Macy’s Fashion Show provided a pop-up shop and mini makeovers. Wonderful raffle prizes were awarded to several lucky winners, including gift certificates, jewelry, clothing, food and wine, and several items featured in “What’s Trending.” Thank you to all sponsors and guests for your continued support of Las Vegas Woman magazine. Guests enjoyed a stylish afternoon of Champagne and brunch; live jazz by Eddie Charles and Millard Jackson; powerful speeches by Captain Sasha Larkin, LVMPD, The Embracing Project founder, Esther Brown, and program director Toshia Shaw, followed by a sophisticated fashion show featuring designers Anne Fontaine, Bunker Bradley and Blazzain Collections. Proceeds benefit “The Embracing Project,” a local nonprofit providing healing services to children and youth who are survivors of sexual exploitation, sex trafficking and violence. 2019 Nevada Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame Induction Photography by JYJ Photography and Infinity Photos The Nevada Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame inducted 35 new members for 2019. The Hall of Fame was first created with the goal to bring added respect, honor and appreciation to the employees of radio and television stations who have worked in the broadcast industry for a minimum of 20 years. The Hall of Fame showcases excellence in broadcasting, with each name representing a very unique talent, a special skill and a journey taken.

United Way Day of Caring Photography by Theresa McNally and United Way of Southern Nevada Over 1,100 volunteers completed 52 projects at 35 organizations and schools throughout the Las Vegas Valley. Bringing the community together to build hope and healing, this community-wide act of kindness wrapped up 1 October Remembrance Week. By uniting together, volunteers helped the community move forward and build resiliency at nonprofits, organizations and schools. Thanks to the generous support of Day of Caring sponsors, including KTNV Channel 13 Action News, Las Vegas Review Journal, Caesars Entertainment Corporation, Chase Bank, Nevada Volunteers, and Wells Fargo. Volunteers completed projects that otherwise might not have been finished, or even started, without their support.

JDRF Cork & Soul Photography by EDISON @stardustfallout The JDRF Nevada Chapter once again put on an exciting fundraiser to benefit those living with Type 1 diabetes. The event, emceed by Las Vegas Woman magazine’s Jennifer Florendo and 8 News Now Chief Meteorologist Tedd Florendo, drew over 1,000 guests to Tivoli Village for an evening of food, wine, beer and spirits tasting. Guests enjoyed entertainment on two stages, including Christy Molasky with the Paul Lowden Quartet, Zowie Bowie, Pop Rebels Band, Lannie Counts with special guest Clint Holmes, DeeVus featuring Michelle Rohl and Dianna Johnson, Elvis Lederer and Michael Peterson.

When struggling brands come to me, nine times out of 10 the brand owner has no idea why they are failing. They have done their research, are checking items off their to-do lists and are trying the latest marketing tactics. After 20 years in the branding industry, I can tell you that most brands do not fail from a lack of doing. One last Facebook post that pushes you from three to four posts a day is not making or breaking your brand. It is not your industry or even your lack of audience that is causing your brand to struggle. The struggle is happening because you built your brand on statistics, not people. Statistics come in all shapes and sizes. From data mining to ROI to niche and avatar branding approaches; all are based on facts and actions with no thought of the motive. This is one reason why I minimize my media appearances of body language analysis in the political season; because one clip with no context does not tell you the truth. An entire bunch of statistics, habits and likes, out of context, will not tell you the truth either. It is the motive behind the action that is the true driving force. The other reason why building a brand, launching a product or doing pretty much anything based off statistics is the wrong idea is simply because the information is old. By the time you read the latest research, months, if not years, have passed since the actual moment the data was collected. Now, this never used to be a massive problem, but we used to use dial-up phones, send letters via snail mail, and update a brand’s message and visuals every four to six years. With the influx of information online and via social media, your brand’s message must evolve both visually and verbally every four to six months to stay up to date with how fast society is shifting as a culture. Building a brand or launching a new product based off the most recent study will have you constantly chasing your

audience because you are building for who they once were, not who they are now or who they are becoming. And no one wants that. If the beloved statistics and studies are not the way to brand building success, then what is? The answer is simple: It is people. Yes, the one common element no matter what you sell, even if it is pet products, another human being must say “yes” to you. And though the media may want you to believe that we have massive cultural divides, the truth is people are more alike than different. This is why Neuro Human Branding® is the only smart method to build a brand on. Though, as people, we like to think that we are these complex, completely unique beings, the truth is that our biology, psychology and social stories make us all scared or amused by similar things. When a brand understands and speaks to these elements, your messaging, be it visual or verbal, is on point because our biology, psychology, and social stories are hardwired into our DNA and subconscious mind. What does Neuro Human Branding® look like in action? Here is a look: Biology Is your ideal customer a hunter or a gatherer? Traditionally, a hunter is a man and the gatherer is a female. And though we still have biological tendencies towards this, it is not always the case. So, what is the deciding factor on if biology will win? Motive. If your audience is obsessed with being the best, then they are primal while working through their hunter sides. Whereas, if community and acceptance is more their speed, then the gatherer mentality is where their primal, instinctual behavior is coming from.

When you understand such a simple motivation as the hunter or gatherer instinct, you can then begin to craft your message, offer, and price to feed such basic needs. Psychology and Social Stories Though technically two distinct categories within Neuro Human Branding®, they both deal with the subconscious minds of our audiences. It is here in the subconscious mind where people make their choices and actions. Yes, human beings are anything but logical. Within the subconscious mind, there is a seven-second window of where a subconscious thought arises and the time this thought crosses over into the conscious areas of the mind. It is in this seven-second window where all brands want to be. If the relationship and attachment your audience has with your brand is strong enough, the subconscious thought will arise, and they will instantly think of what you do. Yes, your brand will be top of mind for your audience. And, yes, this is where the phrase “top of mind” comes from. Because if your brand does not pop up within that seven-second window and your audience’s need goes into their conscious mind, this means your audience is in pain. And like you, most people do not act the nicest, appreciate those extra efforts, or truly wish to build a relationship when they are in pain. By building your brand in a way that speaks to the subconscious mind of your audience versus the logical one, you can eliminate the pain, be top of mind and be beloved by your audience. Brands do not fail because of lack of action. They fail because they take the heart out of the relationship they are creating with their audiences. To truly have a thriving, beloved and profitable brand, you must create a relationship experience with your audience, not a transactional one.
