r e h s i l b PuLetter “Life has taught me I am not always in control. Life is full of experiences, lessons, heartbreak and pain. But, it has also shown me love, beauty, possibility and new beginnings. Embrace it all. It makes us who we are and after every storm comes a clear sky.” Anonymous We are extremely excited to release the long-awaited Spring 2020 issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine. But first, I’d like to check in on all of you; how are you doing? I do miss seeing and interacting with you in person. This has been a very difficult season for so many of us. For some, we feel like we lost control. Others, including myself, were forced to be vulnerable. I’m not sure about you, but I was smiling one minute and having an emotional meltdown the next. I was hurting for so many of my friends and colleagues, their businesses and the overall current state of the world. Our beautiful city, full of lights and excitement, shut down and went dark; it felt devastating. All of this talk about a “new normal” and what that will look like, how long is this going to last, what businesses would survive, what our hearts and souls would look like in the aftermath; no one really knew, or knows, for that matter. … And here we are, slowly reopening. It is starting to look and feel like the city we are so fond of and, although this has been a trying season, there is still so much to be grateful for. I am amazed and inspired by how our community comes together to support one another. To all of the frontline and essential workers: THANK YOU for your sacrifices and your service! We appreciate all of you. We are hopeful that the articles in this issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine will help heal, help alleviate anxiety and fear, and help all of us navigate and cope during these unprecedented times that we are faced with. May you find it to be a comforting resource, as well as a driving force, when and where needed, in your life today. We are featuring wonderful examples of leadership and women to look up to. The women of BOAR are paving the way and changing the landscape of leadership. I encourage you to learn about the programs they offer—it may be just what you need at this time. Although none of us really know what the future holds, we can still look forward to the opportunities that await and there are plenty of examples of how to get started within these pages. Thank you for allowing us to lead, motivate and celebrate you … one issue at a time. Gratefully,
Stephanie Kocher
Himansu Shah MD, FACS Double Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
Las Vegas’s own Dr. Shah explains Today’s Cosmetic Surgery for Real Patients with Real Results. For a well-respected plastic surgeon with a penchant for delivering a wide range of surgical and non-surgical solutions to patients, look no further than Himansu Shah MD, FACS.
Dr. Shah has both, the surgical skills and the personal skills to help you with your decision and make you feel comfortable. He is very skilled and very ethical.”
As a double board-certified plastic surgeon by both The American Board of Plastic Surgery and The American Board of Surgery, patients can feel confident in his ability to deliver nothing less than attentiveness, highly professional care, and stunning results.
A graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology, Dr. Shah earned his medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He is a Diplomate of both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Shah taught at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.
Dr. Shah is a multi-talented specialist who, unlike many plastic surgeons, utilizes both his comprehensive knowledge and welcoming, friendly demeanor to fulfill the needs of patients interested in anything from laser skin rejuvenation to full body contouring. With a mission of “real people; realistic out-comes,” Dr. Shah’s practice is unique in the region in that — while performing all facets of cosmetic surgery — he also is highly experienced in total body lifts and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Shah also performs Brazilian butt lift, liposuction, tummy tucks, face and neck lifts, Botox, fillers (Juvederm®, Restalyne®, Radiesse®, etc) — all the cosmetic procedures we read about daily. Even these more common surgeries have tremendous impact.
Dr. Shah then opened Signature Plastic Surgery — which also includes Signature Dermatology and Signature Med Spa. Dr. Shah can perform cosmetic surgery for the face, breast and body as well as reconstructive surgery. Non-invasive aesthetic services such as injectables, laser and ultrasound treatments, body contouring, facials, IPL and peels are provided by the Med Spa. Care for all skin conditions, for adults and children, is provided by Signature Dermatology.
“Each patient’s own identity is, in itself, beautiful. It’s my job to bring out that beauty.” says Dr. Shah. To do that job, Dr. Shah takes time to talk to each patient, discussing what they want and explaining the best way to achieve a realistic goal. He educates them about their options and offers support throughout every process. This support is evident in the experience described by patient M.T., who went to Dr. Shah for a tummy tuck. She works in healthcare and did her homework before choosing her surgeon. She reports, “I have dealt with surgeons who have outstanding skill, but their interpersonal skills are those of a rock.

ditor ELetter The original draft of my editor’s letter sits untouched, collecting dust in the documents folder of my laptop. It was written about two weeks before the world was flipped upside down as we entered an unknown territory for almost anyone alive today: quarantine 2020. As we reconnect with friends and share our stories of “Life in Quarantine,” we are learning that each of us had different experiences, whether it was pursuing a passion project and turning it into a business, tackling your todo list, learning to work from home, homeschooling or learning something new about yourself or your partner. It was a time for discovery for many; present company included. I started out full of dread based off the idea I would be attempting to homeschool my first grader. But what I learned is that I actually enjoyed the opportunity to spend this much time with her and in the end, I was making slime, doing science experiments and staying up too late enjoying too many snacks. It was the most time I had spent with family without having to rush off to school, work, a lesson or activity. I truly got to slow down and smell those proverbial roses. I tapped into creative skills that had been repressed—or I didn’t know that I had—I learned patience, organized my house and improved my communication skills. If, like many of us, you found yourself in a place of selfdiscovery, you may be wondering what is next and where do you go from here or how do you stay in your lane now. Within this issue of Las Vegas Woman, we cover topics such as “Finding Your Calm: Living Peacefully in a Crazy World” and “Relationships Under Quarantine: Staying Strong While Staying Together” to help you navigate some of these choppy waters. If getting back out and celebrating is what you are most eager for, be sure to read “Girlfriends’ Guide to Getting Out” and our “Warmweather Wines” for some delicious suggestions. As we go forward in new territory and attempt to establish a new normal, I encourage you all to continue the quiet, continue pursuing your passions, continue being grateful and above all, continue being good to yourself.
XO JFlo

Soul CLEANING
(spoiler alert, no harsh scrubbing required) by Jennifer Battisti
It’s the newest sensation—every item, from our coffee-stained T-shirt to a mediocre book, is given pause for us to consider if it “sparks joy.” We are encouraged to press our gratitude into our outgrown shoes, our toddler’s too snug snow coat. We are told to fold the charitable items into cotton origami affirmations and to be thoughtful about their departure from our homes and lives. We fill the donation bags with generous thanks to the materials that gave us their service. We are asked to consider what serves us? What is just taking up space, holding us in the past, keeping us stuck, what clutters our lives? This is intentional living—and this is just our closets. I wonder if this same line of thinking might be useful for the deep cleaning of our thinking, the decluttering of our beliefs. How often do we question whether that decade-old resentment has a place in the cupboards of our mind? Why isn’t that self-limiting belief in the recycle pile? Sacred living comes from attention and ritual and kindness. It comes from unbiased grace. Grace doesn’t buy into our limitations nor does it placate us into staying small. Grace is roomy and generous. By now you’ve heard the term “holding space,” a sort of energetic force field of
SPRING 2020: LVWOMANMAGAZINE.COM
non-fixing and non-judgment that a friend or a therapist might initiate to bear witness to your pain and experience. I have a holding space reserved for my best friend whenever she needs to be seen and heard, but the mutual understanding is we honor one another’s ability and inner resources, so neither of us fix or try to cheer up the other person, unless advice is asked for. I sometimes think that animals are the best space holders, but the worst, I think, can be ourselves, for ourselves. I tend to consider my joyful moments sacred, playing with my daughter, vacations, but when I am feeling scared, overstimulated, lonely, I skate right by sacred and into shame. Holding space for ourselves requires a sort of surrender. Without resistance to the feeling, we can make space for it to be named and felt, to be honored and then we can contend with the thoughts around the feelings, such as “Of course I am lonely, why would anyone love me?” If we are paying attention, we can ask right here in the moment, does this serve me? Is this true? Is this who I want to be? And then we let that sink in. No distracting, no being busybodies, no abandoning ourselves. Soon, even the tedious moments take on a kind of sacredness— we free up space for new ways
of responding to our struggles. What if I met my loneliness with compassion, what if that compassion could include the universal loneliness; that we are all in this together. Certainly I can’t be the only lonely person in this moment. Can I send kindness to myself and these lonely strangers? Curiosity is underestimated, I think. Infusing our personal growth with curiosity can work as a powerful spiritual component. Curiosity is innovative and creative; it’s the opposite of rigidity, it asks your grief in for tea. It gives your fear a pack of crayons. It takes your anger for a hike outdoors. What if we could be free of the emotional, negative thought merry-go-round? Scratching that same old record creates new grooves, curiosity does just that, it creates space for a new way of responding, it uses wonder and playfulness to think up new ways of reacting to ourselves. What if we made our minds and hearts as sacred as the storage unit? What clarity and potential might be revealed? What if clearing what does not serve us allows the sunlight in? An inward effort is never a wasted effort. This season, commit to sweeping the corners of your mind and to let go of what you have outgrown. Bear witness to your big messy heart—your ordinary humanness is sacred.

Spotlight On
RENAE AND LEON IUNCO Owners of Emerald at Queensridge by Jennifer Florendo Renae and Leon Iunco met over three decades ago while they were working at the beach. Each made a lasting impression on the other and Renae, to this day, can remember exactly what Leon looked like, sitting on a barstool. It seems like an unlikely combination: Renae, an athlete from Anaheim who played volleyball, softball and basketball and Leon, a guy from Africa who wanted to be a rock star. Leon’s parents encouraged him to set his sights on a career that would be considered more stable. “A doctor, a dentist, a lawyer or an accountant were my options,” said Leon. He chose to become an accountant and then eventually got to live out his rock star life vicariously when he became the accountant for the band Pink Floyd. That job would eventually bring him to the U.S. where he and Renae would later meet. They quickly fell in love and have been inseparable since that first day. Neither with a high school diploma, but both having big entrepreneurial spirits, they knew that they could do great things together in the business world. They both have extensive backgrounds in the service industry and wanted to bring that experience to a new venture together. They began a photography business in California, where they had lived at the time, before deciding to move their family to Las Vegas. “Las Vegas is the wedding capital of the world,” says Renae. “We chose Las Vegas not only for that, but also because it was an affordable place where you can actually own a home and raise a family.”
SPRING 2020: LVWOMANMAGAZINE.COM
Here, they started a photography business, with a specialty in weddings, and formed solid relationships within the wedding industry. Their talent and ambition helped earn their way into several local chapels, with the former Emerald Gardens being one of them. Their love and passion for the industry, combined with their entrepreneurial skills, propelled the couple to their next venture: opening their own banquet and event center. While working at Emerald Gardens, Leon fell in love with the chapel and said that if it was ever for sale, he wanted to buy it. In 2006, that became a reality. Emerald Gardens was up for sale. The Iuncos used their business acumen to get interest from investors, in addition to selling almost everything they had, in order to purchase what is now Emerald at Queensridge. Over time, they have shown their sons the ropes of operating the family business; however, Renae and Leon remain the heart and soul of the business. Kenny has been appointed to general manager; Shane is the banquet captain and Danny takes care of operations, maintenance and repairs. Of course, Chef Boupha can’t be left out, as he is an honorary member of the family, creating unique and delicious culinary creations for each and every event. While some may find it challenging to work with a spouse and be together almost 24/7, Renae prefers it that way. “We do everything together. We know our roles and work together
to be successful,” she said. They focus on “staying in their lanes” at work, as each knows their role and responsibility within the business. They keep their life at home completely different and separate from work. For them, it all works. “It is the most incredible thing to have a partner you want to be around,” continued Renae. Now, with their sons running most of the operation, Renae and Leon can focus on branching out into other areas. They are looking into hosting more fundraising events at their venue along with starting a nonprofit for people who can’t afford cancer care. Some of Renae’s other out-of-the-box ideas include Sunday brunches, holiday parties and even a dog wedding. Count our RSVP as a yes for that.

Relationships Under
Quarantine Staying Strong While Staying Together
With COVID-19 quarantine, the economy and the stress of life right now, relationships can struggle under the strain. Licensed Clinical Psychotherapist Erin Wiley, MA, LPC, LPCC shares tips and insights on keeping relationships strong and healthy during these times. “Like never before, couples are finding they have more time together. Working from home, a lack of late-night meetings, a reduction in travel—all of these combined have meant more time to connect with our significant others,” Wiley explains. “People who are intentional to use this time wisely are shutting off their television at night and working to create greater intimacy with their partner. Meaningful conversation, working together on projects around the house, making meals together, playing games, and having
MOTIVATING
intimate romantic connections are all ways to use this time to benefit your relationship.” Rather than simply survive this crisis, couples can use this as an opportunity to grow a deeper connection with each other, Wiley believes. Here are five tips to strengthen relationships with significant others:
1
Processing feelings Couples should spend time talking about their feelings during this difficult time. Just as important, if not more so, is validating each other’s experiences and feelings. People tend to want to rescue others from difficult feelings, but sometimes people just need space to process their emotions before they can fully move through them to the other side.
2
Conversation
Couples should try and find time to have meaningful conversation, even if it is just 10 minutes a day; talking about more than the everyday tasks that must be accomplished. Ask each other questions about your childhood, your current goals, and future hopes and dreams. Many couples find even after decades together that there are still things to discover that will deepen your knowledge of each other.
3
Exercise Exercise, whether together or alone, is extremely helpful for increasing positive brain chemistry and working out stress. Taking the time to go on a walk outside the house when possible gives couples a change of scenery that is likely much needed. Even if pushing a stroller or bringing the dogs along,
SPRING 2020: LVWOMANMAGAZINE.COM
23
4
walking is a simple activity that gives couples the chance to move together and reconnect through uninterrupted conversation. Take a break from electronics Constantly having a screen in front of one’s face does not allow for quality interpersonal communication. Setting aside a couple hours a night or a day a week to going tech-free really forces couples to prioritize each other with face-to-face interaction. It gives the mind a break and challenges us to find ways to reconnect intentionally with our significant other.
5
Be a helper to your partner
Asking daily, “What can I do to help you today?” is a simple way to make sure you are actively working to meet your partner’s needs. Whether
it is a good, long hug, help with laundry, a listening ear, or assistance with the kids, checking in to see what your partner’s immediate needs are is a way of putting a “deposit” in your love bank. Having a full account means that, when times get tough, you will have a cushion to fall back on for a withdrawal. Many couple counselors, Wiley included, have noticed a dramatic uptick in the number of couples seeking therapy and relationship coaching. “If you are struggling you should reach out to a competent, qualified professional with training, and credentials. Any of us who have been in lifelong marriages can tell you: marriage is hard and takes lots of work,” Wiley believes. “No one inherently knows how to be a great spouse/significant other; it takes years to become proficient at being in a successful relationship.” Without the proper training and
SPRING 2020: LVWOMANMAGAZINE.COM
skills, Wiley does not know how any couple can make the decision to end their relationship. “You can’t know if you can flourish as a couple until you learn the tools to create a happy relationship,” she states. " I would highly suggest that couples who are struggling call and schedule a telehealth therapy appointment with someone who can show them how they might be able to repair their relationship before ending it. And plenty of couples who are not in crisis have started calling for counseling too. This is an opportune time to reach out to someone who can help equip you with the lessons you need to make your romantic life happier and more fulfilling. Erin Wiley, MA, LPC, LPCC, is a clinical psychotherapist and the executive director of The Willow Center, a counseling practice in Toledo, Ohio. The clinical focus of her therapy work is marriage, family, parenting and relationships. She has extensive training in marriage counseling from the Gottman Institute, located in Seattle. Her most recent area of research involves the study of the management and regulation of emotion as it pertains to mental health. erin-wiley.com

Less Hustle
MORE GLOW Avoid the Beauty Burnout by Jennifer Battisti Choosing is hard. Waltz into any department store and your head will spin from the overwhelming selection of products plumped with promises to infuse your life with beauty. It’s daunting, not to mention expensive to navigate the land of hyaluronic bliss, the island of charcoal dreams and peptide paradise. Add to this the constant influx of social media ads with hip packaging and “convenient” subscription options and you are sure to experience beauty burnout. Skincare shouldn’t be bewildering. Beauty shouldn’t compromise our values or our pocketbook. But also, self-care shouldn’t be a buzz word we sometimes act upon. It should not be an impulse buy. The struggle is real: busy schedules, demanding careers, a full family life. Staying healthy should be based in reality; otherwise, it cannot be integrated into our routines. I am a firm believer in a holistic approach to beauty, that we cannot treat and heal the skin without also treating the mind and spirit. I am also a firm believer that less is usually more and so I typically don’t recommend “fluff” products, such as toners, and instead recommend good quality concentrated products with small molecules, such as serums and oils. You’ll get more bang for your buck and also see results sooner thanks to their potent formulations. Science has narrowed down the No. 1 culprit in premature aging, stress and disease: inflammation. The foundation of my beauty and health routine is based on the philosophy that an anti-inflammatory lifestyle promotes beauty. Alkaline foods such as leafy greens, nuts and good fats

(think avocado and coconut oil) combined with anti-stress activities such as meditation, yoga and artistic endeavors help to reduce cortisol production (the inflammation hormone). When combined with a largely organic skincare regimen, the results are radiant skin that comes from the inside. It makes sense then that we won’t get the glowing results we’re hoping for with the latest and greatest serum or moisturizer, if we are ignoring our frazzled minds and eating a diet full of processed foods. Creating a beauty routine that acknowledges the whole person doesn’t have to be extensive or time consuming, below are tips for infusing your life wellness, which always glows, head to toe. The Four R's of Rejuvenation Rest: I am putting this first because we need to normalize the need for a full night’s rest. The culture of pulling “all-nighters” and foregoing rest in the name of productivity is shaming and just plain arrogant. We are mammals! We need to replenish and renew at night. Nighttime is a wonderful opportunity for vitamin-rich serums to work their molecular magic. Tip: Try Eminence Organics Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil. Replenish: We live in a very harsh, dry desert. Water, electrolytes and vitamins and minerals such as magnesium and biotin not only repair the skin, but also the organs so the skin can properly receive the nutrients. Collagen powder and turmeric are both anti-aging and anti-inflammatory. Eat fresh fruits and veggies, limit inflammatory foods such as sugar, wheat and dairy. For topical replenishment, fruit

acids, vitamin C and peptides are all hard working multipurpose ingredients proven to renew the skin. Tip: Try Nuun effervescent tablets in a liter of water for electrolytes and try Eminence Arctic Berry Peel and Peptide Moisturizer kit, plus a weekly Eminence Citrus and Kale mask for environmental damage. Render: The definition of render is to cause to be or become, make, perform, furnish or provide. Render means service; it means action, thoughtful action. If I help someone, if I contribute, I forget myself, my plans and designs, my troubles, and I connect with humanity, and just like that, radiance, energy, and pure beauty! I cannot stress this enough: belonging to a community, to something larger than yourself makes you feel and look more beautiful. It’s an inside job. Find your cause, a way you can help someone else every day. The cells, the biology, your elasticity will follow. Suddenly, that ninestep regimen to relax your wrinkles and firm the skin will fall away for something manageable. The point is paring internal
joy with safe and effective products and real box-free foods. Tip: Try Eminence Stone Crop Oil Cleanser and reading books to children, shea butter lip balm and fostering shelter pups or Eminence Marine Peptide eye cream and helping a co-worker or an aging parent. Reflect: Meditation and stillness feel very counter intuitive. Reflection first requires awareness, dropping out of autopilot and into mindfulness. It requires a clear vision of who you want to be, every day. Morning journaling and meditation are two powerful ways to get to know yourself. Be in nature, color, exercise and connect with your community. All of these activities boost serotonin and reduce cortisol. Go ahead, ignore your planner for a few mornings a week, limit your exposure to media, watch something slowly unfold, book an appointment with the closest available ladybug, marvel at simplicity. Tip: Try Insight Timer Guided Meditation App and YouTube Joe Dispenza talks.

Give Yourself
A BREAK
Become Your Own BFF by Roselyn Poon We humans are great at telling each other what to do. We have entire media campaigns telling us to be kind to animals, be considerate to those who are disadvantaged, don’t bully, help our brothers and sisters, support people who need moral support, encourage people whenever and wherever we can, remind people that if we can do it they too can do it— whatever that means. We are even to the point where we are so concerned about discouraging people who try that we give every competitor a trophy or award. There is nothing wrong with any of this; in fact these social tenets form the backbone of a wonderful society. However, what happens when it comes to how we treat ourselves? Have you ever congratulated yourself on a job well done? Have you ever given yourself credit for overcoming fear and tackling the unknown? Have you ever licked your wounds after losing a battle and checked off all the points you won, even though you didn’t win the war? Or did you continue the battle by beating yourself up further? How would you react and what would you say if your best friend forever (BFF) was in pain due to the following? To make my life easier, let us assume your BFF is a woman; however, everything equally applies to a male as well. She didn’t make the cut in a competition. Would you try to lift her spirits and encourage her to try again, or maybe look for other options, or would you confirm her worst fears in that she just isn’t good enough and will never be good enough no matter what she does? LEADING
Her significant other just ended their relationship. Would you be there for her and when she has stopped crying long enough for you to get a word in, suggest a hot shower followed by a cup of tea and a walk in the park to clear her head? Or would you confirm her feelings that it was all her fault and she just isn’t good enough to keep such a great person in her life?
blame and responsibility for your disappointments and perceived failures? Do you refer to yourself as lame, a loser, a screw up or a lost cause? Would you talk to your BFF using these terms? I doubt it; because for the majority of us, we try to be kind to the people we care about. Rather than berate them, we encourage them and assure them that it is natural to fail from time to time, as we are humans.
She missed out on getting the job. Would you tell her to lower her sights and look at dropping her salary expectations? Or would you help her to realize that the chances of the right person matching the right job at the right time is like playing 3D Snakes and Ladders and that maybe she could determine why she missed out and start working on addressing these issues?
Life is hard enough without you making it more difficult for yourself. It is time for you to step up to the plate, banish your personal bully and become your No. 1 BFF. You need to take on this role because even though you may have a bunch of friends you can run to, they may not always be available, and even if they are, they may be going through a personal issue themselves. You are the only BFF available to you 24/7, and you are the one who genuinely knows what is going on in your life. You have all the information firsthand, you just need to look at your pain from the point of view of your No. 1 BFF.
No luck in the dating game. Would you go along with her point of view that dating at her age is a lost cause? Or would you help her come to grips with the fact that it takes two people to make a date work and maybe, just maybe, the guy is the dud? Regardless of what you would have said or done, the point is that a BFF is generally someone who genuinely loves and cares for you. She is many things: loyal, non-judgmental, respectful, trustworthy, honest and above all compassionate and accepting. A BFF is the person who, given the chance, will give you her hand and pick you up off the floor. How do you treat yourself? Are you your BFF or your personal bully? Do you beat yourself up and take full
Think about what you would say to a friend who was going through your situation. How would you best respond and support her? What tone of voice would you use? Now, step out of your situation and step into the shoes of your new BFF. Allow her to speak to you in the soft, caring tone of voice you would use when speaking to a friend in pain. Treat yourself as you would treat your friends. It takes practice, but let me assure you that giving yourself a break is in fact the break you are looking for to propel yourself into a wonderful future.

Sparrow + Wolf’s Chef Brian Howard aims for impact and it shows. “We’ve survived so many challenges ... This was the time to reset, gain momentum and get to where we were before [the shutdown].” Chef Howard is resolved, but optimistic. “I want to throw a dinner party every night ... Good food, good music and good hospitality.” The modern-American hotspot opened in May 2017, just three years ago, in the heart of Chinatown and yet, in many ways, is an island unto itself, with layers of complexity to a scalable, ingredient-focused menu built upon local, ethical sources like Desert Bloom Eco Farm, located just outside of the valley. Dishes are simple, yet meticulously curated, and drawn upon from the neighborhood, seasonal factors— expect menu changes every six to eight weeks—and even family. Take two out of the newly added 20 dishes, for example: the Smashbang Burger is a deconstructed version of the beloved Chinese dumpling recipe passed down from Howard’s mother-inlaw. The Vietnamese Caramelized Pork Ribs are slowcooked for 24 hours, then smoked over almond wood emphasizing the dimensional use of ingredients in the kind of dish that should intimidate no one. Sparrow + Wolf has been doubling down on the focus, even ramping up improvements to their in-house bakery program and adding cold-pressed juices to their cocktails (see “The Penicillin” and “The Vaccine”). “Mixologists are liquid chefs,” Chef Howard explains. The practice originally started to encourage sustainability while simultaneously enhancing flavor and vibrancy to dishes. Seeing the disconnect, he encouraged the liquid chefs to use many of the same ingredients he and his team were using in the kitchen. “Not only does it diminish food waste,” he

says, “but it helps balance the damage that comes with the buzz.” Even with two-and-a-half months of being quarantineclosed, Sparrow + Wolf held true to their mission while encouraging those in and out of the industry to stay positive and connected to a craft. They fashioned the #SparrowAndWolfChallenge, where each cocktail created (and hashtagged) provided a meal for first responders. The challenge garnered over 3,000 tags from places all over the world, including Miami, Austria, Hong Kong and New York. Chef Howard hopes to see Chinatown venture away from commercial ambiance and encourage a boost of creativity. You can bet his actions mirror his sentiments. When dining at your table, you will likely notice the striking, dutiful mural reflecting the restaurant’s namesake (copied onto the back of the new menus). The artwork is courtesy of Heather Toledo, a new addition to the staff, making her the first artist employed with the restaurant. Her next work, on the restaurant’s street-facing exterior, will be even harder to miss. Sparrow + Wolf has been patient, as an entity must be. “Growth was and is the goal. With a menu that is more scalable, we’re able to bring this to more cities.” Is Chef Brian Howard foreshadowing? It’s possible, but what we know is that year three for Sparrow + Wolf will be their best one yet. Sparrow + Wolf 4480 Spring Mountain Rd. #100 Las Vegas, NV 89102

PASTA SHOP RISTORANTE & ART GALLERY by Cynthia Graham, photography courtesy Pasta Shop Ristorante & Art Gallery
Since opening in 1989, the Alenik family has been cooking up a unique dining experience that embraces a passion for food, wine, and culture. This charming Henderson restaurant welcomes diners in an inviting and friendly setting of warm, rich colors and original local art. You'll find attention to detail with the highest quality in all of their dishes and discover why the Pasta Shop Ristorante & Art Gallery is popular with many locals, deserving its status as an area institution. Long before Las Vegas became known as a foodie destination, founding owner David Alenik started Pasta Shop with an impressive pedigree. The former private chef for Steve Wynn and Frank Sinatra, Chef David could lay claim to serving a who’s who of celebrities and Vegas royalty, including Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, Sylvester Stallone, Muhammad Ali and Evel Knievel among many others, before his untimely passing in 2016. The Alenik family and their trusted staff, including Chef Eddie Martinez and General Manager Gianna Kent, have carried on David’s legacy, keeping to his high standards and hewing to his perfected recipes while adding some worthy updates. They take a simple approach to serving delicious food: always fresh and house made. The menu is filled with classic Italian cuisine with something to satisfy all tastes, including many vegan and gluten-free options. Start with their beautiful artichoke appetizer: composed simply of cold poached artichoke, house-made balsamic vinaigrette and freshly grated parmesan, it is as beautifully plated as it is delicious. A local favorite dish named after the founding chef is Chicken Davida: sautéed chicken breast topped with fried eggplant, sundried tomatoes and mozzarella with polenta served with fresh vegetables. Or

While the favorites are here in abundance—baked lasagna, chicken Marsala—there’s always something new when you’re ready to fall in love all over again. In fact, you can make any dish new by requesting it “Alenik Style” with roasted Brussels sprouts, avocado, beets and sautéed kale; once a secret menu item that became too popular to keep secret. Their vegan pizza in particular becomes a thing of wonder when ordered “Alenik.” All of this with some wine from a list curated to complement each dish makes dining here a truly neighborly experience. While you are enjoying the art on the plate, be sure to take in the art on display, reflecting the many talents of owner Ann Alenik, whose work has been featured on HGTV and in galleries around the country (the rotating pieces are all available for purchase). Even the tables are art, as each one was individually finished by Ann. It should not surprise that Pasta Shop has received many accolades over the years. They have been rated one of the 10 Best Las Vegas Restaurants by USA Today, received Restaurateur of the Year from the Nevada Restaurant Association, and awarded a Best of Las Vegas rating from the readers of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, among many others. THE TACO STAND TAKES ON LAS VEGAS Southern California-grown Taqueria Brings a Taste of Tijuana to Chinatown San Diego’s staple taqueria, The Taco Stand, opened its first Las Vegas location earlier in June, adding to its four existing locations in San Diego, one in Orange County and one in Miami to date. Best known for slinging authentic, Tijuana-style tacos, this family-owned taco haven is a welcome addition to the Las Vegas culinary scene. Housed in a 1,778 square-foot space along Spring Mountain Road in Chinatown, the new outpost will feature the same popular menu items showcased at its other locations. Co-owners Julian Hakim and Aram Baloyan are well-versed in what it takes to deliver authentic Mexican food. Both originally from Tijuana, the two restaurateurs grew up eating at a dozen local taco stands on a weekly basis, enjoying fresh grilled carne asada with spicy salsas on homemade tortillas. Hakim says, “In Tijuana, tacos were always the go-to option when someone wanted a quick, but well-made meal.” After moving to San Diego, they quickly realized that finding the type of tacos they grew up enjoying was a challenge. That realization inspired the opening of their first San Diego location in 2013.
SPRING 2020: LVWOMANMAGAZINE.COM
“We created The Taco Stand out of a personal need to enjoy a place that served delicious tacos in San Diego,” says Hakim. “It didn’t have to be anything fancy or flashy, just a fun spot to enjoy some awesome food. The model seems to have worked, and we’re thrilled by the response.” Staying true to their vision, Hakim and Baloyan have maintained the same street taco stand vibe at all locations, now bringing those coveted taco creations to Las Vegas locals and visitors alike. Popular menu items include their specialty tacos; Al Pastor, packed with rotisserie-marinated pork, cilantro, onions, cilantro sauce and pineapple, as well as their Nopal Taco, a vegetarian option crafted from flame-grilled cactus, melted cheese, cilantro sauce, tomato and avocado, both of which are served on madeto-order corn tortillas. Complete with a salsa bar brimming with daily-made salsas, there is a reason The Taco Stand continues to draw lines out-the-door each and every day. The Taco Stand Las Vegas 3616 Spring Mountain Rd. Financial Complexities
of Remarriage One Daytime TV Host’s Engagement Highlights This Topic by Melissa Attanasio, CFP®, CDFA®, MAFF®
In November, viewers watched while Hoda Kotb announced her engagement to Joel Schiffman on the “Today” show. The 55-yearold morning show icon and breast cancer survivor shocked her co-hosts and viewers alike with her surprise on-air announcement. Remarriage can open a beautiful new chapter of life. Financially established couples in their 50s deciding to remarry raises complex financial challenges and difficult conversations for the spouses-to-be. Kotb, for example, reportedly earns $7 million annually as host of the “Today” show, while earning additional income from book sales. Her net worth is an estimated $30 million according to Celebrity Net Worth. Schiffman doesn’t have the name recognition of his Emmy-winning fiancée, but the veteran finance executive has compiled wealth and assets of reportedly $19 million. Schiffman already had a daughter of his own from a previous relationship when the two started dating. Later, while living with Schiffman, Kotb adopted two baby girls, the older in 2017 and the younger in 2019. This power couple’s new family dynamic highlights the need for preparation and planning when remarrying later in life. Specifically, prenuptial agreements (keep in mind, I have yet to meet a prenup that has not been challenged) and a separate property detail list of financial assets and liabilities. Financial goals and detailed estate planning should be discussed and secured before tying the knot.
WELL-BEING
Compare Financial Goals and Dreams Begin by having an honest conversation between you and your partner regarding each party’s financial status. Discuss your ideal lifestyle and how it compares to your future spouse’s. Once your visions are aligned, you can then bring the conversation to the present to discuss the cash flow management by creating a spending policy and discussing dynamics needed to get there. This can range from establishing joint accounts, reviewing historical spending for both parties and fixed expenses. When it comes to creating a strategy, the conversation is often best guided by a Certified Financial Planner™ who can provide wisdom and experience in cash flow management, which is often the area of contention for most couples. Creating alignment from the beginning assists in the success for your marriage. A Certified Financial Planner™ can recommend investments, insurance considerations, income tax, retirement, estate planning, and risk management. They can also open the conversation to areas like debt and liabilities that might otherwise be uncomfortable to bring up on your own. Take a Full Inventory of Assets Each partner should create a detailed inventory of their assets. You may have been single for some time and accrued wealth and property since your prior marriage, and it is best to list all separate property. List your bank, investment, retirement, pension, and children’s 529 accounts. This list should also include real estate, jewelry, automobiles,
SPRING 2020: LVWOMANMAGAZINE.COM
as well as anything remaining that is separate property. It is advisable to document all statements prior to the wedding date. If you have been living with your future spouse for a while and have accrued substantial joint purchases or shared expenses, make sure those are discussed and documented as well. Both the separate property and joint asset lists can provide direction for your prenuptial agreement and can be utilized for estate planning to prevent conflict in the event of death or divorce. Establish Property Trusts and a Legacy Plan In remarriage, with each party bringing their own wealth and acquired assets to the equation, separate property trusts are often utilized. It is imperative that each party obtains separate legal counsel as each will need their own advocate. Separate trusts give you the flexibility to change the division of assets over time. You may want to ensure your heirs receive the benefit until longevity has
been established in your new marriage at which point you can revisit the division. Be careful not to concede too much on the front end for the consideration of your beneficiaries. Now that you have a better understanding of the net worth of your estate, you may work with your advisors to determine whether or not you have an estate tax issue. Life insurance may be utilized to reduce this future liability. Whether you are a daytime TV host or a daytime TV watcher, as you enter a new marriage, consider various possibilities and secure your financial well-being and future. Always ensure that your premarital assets are managed properly and not commingled, listing out any joint investments, should you choose to do so. Create abundance. Melissa Attanasio, CFP®, CDFA®, MAFF® and Women’s Choice Award Advisor is the founder and CEO of Abundant Wealth Strategies and Divorce Strategies Group. Abundant Wealth Strategies is a wealth management firm founded in 1992. The firm specializes in financial matters and comprehensive cash flow management for high net worth individuals, amongst them, women in transition.

Power In Numbers
WOMEN COMING TOGETHER FOR POSITIVE CHANGE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY Empowered women empower women. It’s the belief that women should be encouraging each other to be and do their best, and in this new decade, it has become a rallying cry for United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women United. Members focus on lifting each other up to achieve success, but they take it one step further. Empowered women empower women—and their community. As a founding member of Women United back in 2008, Rhonda Clausen was drawn to the group by that very idea. “Women who come from all different backgrounds, walks of life, places in their careers and home and family life—the one thing we all have in common is that we want to make impactful change in our community,” she said. “We know it can be done, we know we can make a difference, and that’s what brings us together.” “One of our members has said that we are greater than the sum of our parts, and I couldn’t agree more,” shared Monte Smith, who led the group as a co-chair. “It’s not just professional networking, it’s not just a social club, it is not just business development. We all are here to make a difference, to make a contribution.”
CELEBRATING
The founding members of Women United led the charge to change Southern Nevada for the better, bringing members together to help improve their community and grow as individuals. Women across the valley took notice, including current Women United chair Michelle St. Angelo. “After spending years looking for a women's group that would satisfy my craving for mentorship, growth and making a real difference, Women United was it! These ladies work hard to impact each other and our neighbors in ways you can’t even imagine,” Michelle said. This impact can be seen in how Women United has empowered organizations throughout the community, like Leaders in Training. LIT founder Erica Mosca was so inspired by the members making a difference that she joined the group herself. “As the founder & executive director of a non-profit supported by Women United in the past, I knew firsthand the strong community impact these women on the move have,” she explained. “I wanted to contribute my on-the-ground experience as well as learn from the multitude of inspiring, successful and collaborative women.” Now that the group has grown to over 100 members from all different backgrounds and stages of life, members are looking forward to the future and how they can leave a legacy
of change for generations to come. It starts with the Emerging Leadership Award for Women, a member-funded scholarship helping local young women pursue their dreams of graduating college. Eight women have been selected to receive the scholarship, along with the support and mentorship that comes from the members of Women United. Milena Avagyan, a freshman at UNLV, says that receiving the scholarship is one of her most treasured accomplishments. “I get to be a witness of multiple women making changes on a daily basis to improve our community. These women have made an influential and inspirational mark on me and my future actions.” Mey Mey Heng, another recipient, values the guidance and experience that members can share with someone just starting out. “We have a wonderful support group of ladies who are successful and have provided great leadership. It’s very inspiring, knowing you have someone there to look up to, to be a mentor and give personal and professional guidance.” By empowering past, present and future members to use their collective strength to make a difference for their fellow members and their community, Women United is creating a better future for Southern Nevada. Her client, Nicole Pluta, said it best: “I thought ‘how are horses supposed to help me deal with all of these dark, emotional struggles I was going through?’ Oh man, was I wrong! Through Equine Therapy, I learned how important it is to build relationships with others. And for the first time in my life, I felt like I was making a deep connection with another being that didn’t judge, look down on, or hurt me, and it just so happened to have four legs.” Laura is certified in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and uses her gentle, well-trained horses to help participants learn how to build trust and create healthy boundaries. She works closely with her friend and clinician, Francine Greenstein, MFT. Together, they have over 50 years combined experience using horse therapy for individuals, groups, families, and couples. And the programs are vetted by the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center to help those impacted by One October. EAP is a unique trauma-informed, proven experiential therapy. Laura said, “The corporate environment can be competitive. Teams can learn much from the horses, such as how to be a “herd” not a “pack.” This philosophy for a team creates productivity and a positive dynamic in the work environment. Laura recently rolled-out a program that’s near and dear to her heart called

Sessions focus on healing from the cumulative emotional stress and trauma they experience in their every day service to our community. Laura’s clinical team brings the horses for therapeutic on-site visits to the client as well. “I was diagnosed with PTSD in 2015 from being involved in an officer involved shooting that happened years before. I have continually battled anger, anxiety, depression, rage, and nightmares. I have sought out and continue with traditional therapy and counseling, but within the last year I found Tranquility Ranch. I have found that there is value with working with horses. There is something about working with the horses that calms me down, and after working with them, I find a peace within me.” Retired Sergeant Greg Ziel Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department

Living Peacefully In A Crazy World by Holly Davis, CPCI, ABD
41 I am no stranger to ducking at life coming at me full speed ahead with my hands over my head, crouching in a ball and my eyes sealed shut! Life is awfully gritty. Living on this vast whirling planet can, at any given time, bring me to the place of being deluged in trauma, grief, heartbreak, financial ruin, hopelessness and, oh yeah, let’s throw in a pandemic. This is not the time when a person should become apathetic, or learn to “just get over it,” or practice avoidance. “Stuffing it” does not work out well either. I cannot tell you how many times I have felt like I was not going to make it. In tumultuous times, I asked for help. It is not good to be alone. There are times when a human must surrender to good, old fashioned mercy. This is one of those times. I have spoken to so many people who feel that asking for help is not their strong point, nor is it mine. It means letting down the proverbial mask, being vulnerable and trusting. If there has ever been a time in history to have counsel, this is it. Consider this: How different would your life be if you had a person to talk to every week for one hour? What if you had a counselor to talk to about anything you needed to process? How differently would you be going through the COVID-19 ordeal with some support? I will be vulnerable and just come from my own perspective in answering I would probably have more peace if I had a regular counselor. I certainly do have my own story about counseling and why it’s one of my biggest passions. I not only sought out counseling, but also later studied it, because I am interested in change. I love the idea of alchemy and get so passionate with the concept that people can change their circumstances, as they change their minds every day. I am riveted by the way we think and do the things we do as humans— that is why I study behavior. We are fascinating!
Try people watching when you can get out and about safely. But hear me now: The most startling people watching is looking at yourself. No, really… look at you. Analyze what is and is not working. Drop in, and sit for a while with your emotions, values, beliefs, strengths and weaknesses. This is a crucial time in history to clean, sort, rid, rest and take your home back. Do some life inventory as well and get a handle on your emotional well-being. You will probably notice that you haven’t been acknowledged much, by yourself or by others. Yeah, sure you may receive attention in the form of a heart, or thumbs up if you're braggadocious, fake or if you achieve something great on social media. Those numbers are a farce.
There are times when a human must surrender to good, old fashioned mercy. In real life, when was the last time you checked in with yourself? When was the last time someone asked you face to face, looking in your eyes, “How are you?” “No, really, how are you?” There are obvious benefits from being heard, supported and validated. During the pandemic, when I called my clients, they sounded fine considering we are amidst a world crisis. I didn’t see signs of panic, confusion, trauma or lack of direction. I cannot say that was the situation for some of my friends I had been checking in on. I concluded that my clients were doing so well because they are used to being listened to. It is the magic sauce: Listening. My biggest hope is in transformation, and changing thoughts, words and deeds. This concept can change the world from the inside out, and we are desperate for change. We need to look at our own lives and advocate for ourselves. It’s not good enough for you

to simply be alive; you have the right to really live and live well. Here’s your homework assignment: What does well-being really mean for your own life? This is not an issue that should be left to the professionals alone. It is a deeply personal issue of ultimate responsibility. Listening to your own needs, and meeting them is your job and the key to ultimate health. The highest form of well-being is acknowledging feelings. When I am lovingly honest with myself, I can overcome the cycle of being unwell with sober awareness. Most of the rubbish that comes up for me has been inherited, and then when I think I’m all clear, more trauma comes sweeping through. Of my own wellness journey, I can’t allow anything to be more important than my health, especially my mental health. I have lived most of my life finding a way to break the chains of mental illness because suffering is not the only option and I do not want to pass on the illness. This work requires compassion and a life goal of happiness. On a final note, when I seek out help from another, it is the need to be heard. I don’t expect anyone but me to fix me. The amazing dynamic of using your voice to free your mind of the chatter is that you get to audibly hear your story, and perhaps change the outcomes. I already know deep down what I need to be healthy, so do you. In this crazy world, let’s be a part of the calm. “Women need to remember that ‘estate’ is not synonymous with wealth. Far too often, we don’t feel like we need an estate plan because we don’t have a lot of money."
Your Financial
Health by Jeanette Bajalia
Women, more than men, often doubt their abilities to make sound financial decisions, and as a result women often let their husbands, partners, or significant others handle planning for retirement or investing in the stock market.* But 2020 is as good a time as any to change that, says Jeanette Bajalia, a retirement-income planner, founder of Woman’s Worth® and the author of such financial books as “Wi$e Up, Women!” and “Retirement Done Right.” “Most women are going to be responsible for managing their money at some time in their lives,” Bajalia says. “They will be widowed or divorced, and at that point are going to have a steep learning curve if they always left the investing responsibilities to others.” To help give themselves a more secure financial future, Bajalia suggests this year women resolve to: Become financially literate. “I’ve seen too many women suffer because of ill-informed decisions about their money,” Bajalia says. “Many women, especially baby boomers, were never taught as young girls to assume financial management responsibilities.” To become a good steward of your money, she says, it is important to understand various savings strategies and options, and the

FOUR T I PS FOR A MORE SECURE FUT URE risks and rewards associated with those strategies. So, learn about investing and learn how to read a financial statement. “Studies have shown that people who become educated about their financial strategies and play an active role in planning and monitoring their assets end up twice as wealthy as those who don’t,” she says. Schedule a financial checkup. It is important to develop a financial plan that will provide you income in retirement, but don’t just shove the plan into a drawer, Bajalia says. Situations change, and you may need to accelerate savings, reduce risks, or tweak your plan in some other fashion. Meeting with your financial professional for an annual “financial physical” will provide an in-depth assessment of where you are against where you want to be, she says. Create or update a legacy plan. Nearly 60% of Americans are missing critical legacy and estate planning documents, such as a will, a trust, a living will, or power-ofattorney documents, Bajalia says. “Women need to remember that ‘estate’ is not synonymous with wealth,” she says. “Far too often, we don’t feel like we need an estate plan because we don’t have a lot of money. But lack of a legacy plan can create a burden on those we leave behind. For most women, their greatest desire is to leave a legacy and to not be a burden on their children or other family members.”
Get healthy and stay healthy. What does this have to do with your finances? A lot, Bajalia says. The longer you live, the more likely you’ll face debilitating illnesses, and those illnesses come with big medical expenses that can drain your savings. “We want to ensure that in our 50s and 60s we start really taking care of both our physical and emotional health, so it doesn’t have such a devastating impact on our wealth,” she says. “Sadly, most Americans spend more time planning a two-week vacation than they do planning their financial futures,” Bajalia says. “Women who want a quality lifestyle in retirement need to put themselves in control of their own financial destinies, and the sooner the better.” Jeanette Bajalia (womans-worth.com) is the founder and president of Woman's Worth®, where she specializes in the unique needs of women as they plan for retirement. She is also president of Petros Financial Group and is an Investment Advisor Representative with Petros Advisory Services, LLC, a registered investment advisory firm. She has authored three books: “Planning a PURPOSEFUL Life,” “Wi$e Up Women! A Guide to Total Fiscal and Physical Well-Being,” and “Retirement Done Right!” Bajalia is an Ed Slott Master Elite Advisor and recognized as one of 20 Women of Influence by “The Jacksonville Business Journal.” She has over 40 years of leadership experience as a business owner and insurance and retirement income planning professional. She has appeared on CNBC and “Growing Bolder” as well as in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Yahoo! More Than Just Medicine
A Variety of Factors to Consider When Treating Your Overall Mental Well-being by Dr. Tiger Devore
A very common topic people seek therapy for are ways to increase overall health and well-being, and to reduce anxiety and depression, even for just common forms of worry or blue moods/sad times. Sometimes just the passage of time can do the trick. But for many, the feelings may persist and become enough of an annoyance that we seek some activity, such as going out and being with friends, treating ourselves to some pampering, or another pleasant distraction to elevate our mood. If the things we know how to do don’t work, seeking treatment for anxiety and depression may be next. If you are referred to a therapist by friends or a physician, it is important to know that all therapists are trained to rule out existing medical conditions that may be a contributing factor to mental health issues. Good reference books exist that allow for therapists to become informed about many medical conditions that may mimic or underlie psychological symptoms. Most patients want to avoid taking drugs to reduce depression and anxiety and look to other more natural or holistic remedies. But, it is also easy to see a pill as an easy way to “fix sleeplessness, anxiety and depression. There have been significant advances in medication effectiveness over the last 50 years for the treatment of mental illness, and sometimes those drug treatments are the most effective choice for patients living with psychological symptoms. Dietary treatments have gained popularity for treating many mental illnesses, though not without controversy, for everything from autism (spectrum disorders) to bipolar
WELL-BEING
disease (manic depression). More research is making the connection between anxiety and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and depression and malnourishment more evident. Recently, several very good research articles have made it clearer than ever that exercise may be the most effective antidepressant available to patients as a treatment for mental health matters. The results of these carefully designed studies have proven that therapists need to suggest these alternatives to medication in order to be fully responsible for their patients' best options in seeking treatment for anxiety and depression.
Dietary treatments have gained popularity for treating many mental illnesses ... for everything from autism to bipolar disease. In the last few years, more and more research has been pointing professionals in the direction of looking at the connection between gut health and psychological symptoms. We all have many different kinds of bacteria in our gut; they are a necessity to functioning. Two aspects of those bacteria seem to be directly related to mental health issues: diversity (how many different kinds of bacteria) and what kind of bacteria. It turns out that some bacteria release substances that can directly affect mood (called neuroactive substances). The larger evaluation of how the microbes are interacting and producing these substances in your gut is referred to as microbial
SPRING 2020: LVWOMANMAGAZINE.COM
metabolism. Some researchers have concluded that these microbial differences directly affect quality of life, and these conclusions are not based on small study groups but large population samples, so the research is considered robust and not easily disputed. In fact, making sense of how this works has been exposed in some studies in that some microbes were found to produce a close cousin of a human neurotransmitter called dopamine, which is associated with a better mental quality of life. Dopamine is associated with the experience of pleasure and reward in the brain and can help motivate you toward achieving reward. Dopamine release
is significantly increased by the drugs that are most commonly abused by humans: alcohol, opiates, nicotine, amphetamines and cocaine. So are probiotics, those supplements that increase the amount and diversity of bacteria in the gut, the answer to all of our mood problems? Well, maybe, but that hasn’t really been studied as a direct link. All the research I am citing here may point to that conclusion, but the direct relationship hasn’t been studied yet. DR. It was at this point Chastain founded Millennial Consulting, a unique financial training company that focuses on the whole person and offers life coaching blended with financial wellness coaching. Four years later, she is on fire and teaching other women how to enjoy taking control of their money. Chastain’s holistic approach to financial wellness and her 20+ years advising millennials meant that she was the perfect candidate to join Virginia Knudsen, CEO and founder of BOAR, in her new endeavor: NextGen. We asked Lisa what advice she would like to share with our readers and, without hesitation, she responded:
“TODAY is the best day to take control of your financial lives. When that happens, you can start living your BEST life, and that’s what actually matters in the end. You can keep money simple. You can keep life simple. Audit your time and who you spend your time with. This is the key to understanding where your money is going. If you don’t like your financial results, take a look around and make necessary changes in your environment, too. A budget won’t fix everything, which is why we start with your life, vision and values first!”

Kimberly Malloy, MS, LMFT is the founder of Center for Relational Health-LV and recently appointed executive coach for BOAR. In private practice since 2009, Malloy’s extensive background in corporate training, providing customer service, leadership, management and all forms of personal development for large corporate and small local companies, inspired her to transition her career focus to therapy and create the Center for Relational Health-LV. Malloy believes that at the root of our personal and professional success—or failure—are relationships that either work well or relationships that need work. She believes health is the never-ending pursuit of wholeness for our minds, bodies and spirits. These tenets are the focus of her company CRH-LV, as Malloy explains that relational health calls upon each of these to ensure our relationships are working optimally. Malloy says it best herself:
“Working with people and hearing their shared stories of transformation is an unbelievable privilege. My clients invite me into the deepest part of their story, often filled with pain, shame, fear, sadness and blame, because they desire to experience life through a new, healthier lens.”

She is also a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator, based in the research of Dr. Brené Brown. She was a co-host on a women’s talk show, “A View from Above,” and recently a 2017 inductee into the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Leadership Hall of Fame. A sought-after speaker and trainer for large groups, Malloy recently joined BOAR as an executive coach, launching a CEO mastermind Group. BOAR focuses on working with the whole leader; personally, professionally, physically, mentally and spiritually, which aligns beautifully with Center for Relational Health-LV’s values. “I love the concept of BOAR. I believe when most people think of a mastermind concept they think of strategic planning and professional development, but BOAR adds the component of emotional health. This piece is different! A company can be financially healthy today, but if the leaders are lacking in emotional intelligence, this will impact the people and infrastructure over time. BOAR is dedicated to the full picture of health for business and personal to its members. This was a match made in heaven for me,” said Malloy. Malloy’s passion is to inspire personal and professional emotional health with truth and generosity.

The Secret to Being Well Isn’t J ust for Kids … Anymore By Janice Marie Wilson
Do you want to know the secret to perfect health and wellbeing? If I could bottle up this secret and sell it, I would be incredibly rich. But, I love you all too much to charge for something that is free. It’s as easy as the air we breathe, the beauty we see and the love we feel. If I tell you now, you have to promise to do this every day, in every way. Guaranteed you will feel what it truly means to experience great health and well-being. It doesn’t require a health club, supplements, special diets or an insurance premium. Did I say it was free?
you were a child exploring your block or neighborhood. Every sidewalk hopscotch art, rock, dandelion, childhood game, tree and empty lot was an adventure to explore. Every activity brought with it a flood of creativity and experiences that were sheer fun. They were glimpses into our souls. Every game of hide and seek, red light green light, statues or tag is rooted firmly in the present moment. We didn’t want to go home for dinner, and we lost track of time. These kinds of experiences continue to be important, even as adults.
The answer is PLAY! Quite simple, isn’t it? Play is living creatively. It’s what fun is, just for you. Playtime is essential for a vibrant life. We fill our lives with more and more stuff, living an action-packed life, going from one activity to the next. How many of those things that we do are for fun? Even the sports we play are competitive and focused on the win. As adults, we often neglect to schedule a little fun for ourselves. Play is when our actions are blissfully free from attachment to outcomes. Every day offers us a chance to kick up our heels, take off our shoes, and even sing and dance a little.
Enjoying activities that have no external goals or milestones to reach enable us to dig deep into our own reservoirs of creativity and connect more deeply with ourselves and others. It is through play, fun and experimentation that some of our best ideas come to life.
Creative expressions, meaning playtime and down time, are key ingredients for a radiant and healthy life. It is important to make time for the moments that offer you real joy. Rest and relaxation need to be scheduled into our day just as much as exercise, eating healthy and regular checkups. The benefits of having fun are enormous. How many of us truly have fun every day? A time when we relax, enjoy a good book, listen to great music or just laugh because we are surprised and delighted with what is happening. Laughter truly is the best medicine. Think back to when WELL-BEING
Just as your body is changing in every moment, give yourself permission to play in the moment. Free yourself from feeling attached to an outcome. Be easy-breezy about what you’re thinking and feeling. Like the wind, feel the freshness of the air and breathe new life into this moment. Let the breeze swirling around you energize and renew you. Leading Execs Come Together to Achieve a World Without Cancer Each spring, 25 female executives gather to make a difference in the Las Vegas Valley and beyond. Given that Las Vegas is accustomed to philanthropy, it’s no surprise that the American Cancer Society decided to set forth a campaign for women leaders to raise funds to fight cancer. What sets this particular group of women apart from the rest is the fact that not one of these top female executives are the same. The Power In Purple participants make up a group of women recognized across a vast variety of industries—sometimes from competitor organizations—working together to achieve a common goal: a world without cancer. The Power In Purple campaign is born out of recognition of the inspirational and influential women in the Las Vegas community needing an outlet to serve. The campaign’s name is a true testament to the powerful women dressed in the color purple, who use their voices to make an impact in the world. Together, these Power in Purple women unite to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) cancer initiatives as well as raise awareness in the community. In 2018, the program was developed by American Cancer Society Nevada staff member, Shannon Moore. After national success with the Real Men Wear Pink campaign, Moore decided that the organization needed to reevaluate and provide a platform for women to do just the same. “2018 felt like a year of women coming into their own, and as I reviewed our portfolio I saw the American Cancer Society didn’t have an opportunity for our executive women,” says Moore. “When I pitched it to a few women, they were overjoyed to participate, and it has been embraced by our community since that date! With its third year in existence, fundraising for 2018 was $40,000 and has grown with the Class of 2020, which is on track to raise upwards of $100,000.”

PURPLE Fundraising efforts for this campaign have included exciting opportunities from home based multi-course dinner parties, roller skating fundraisers at the Crystal Palace Rancho, and even variety show style events with entertainment from the Las Vegas Strip. The events are a representation of the diverse variety of industries and backgrounds of women, their imagination and their network’s interests. It is estimated there may be an additional 35,000 cancer deaths expected this year due to Covid-19 and people’s inability to safely get needed treatments and testing. Cancer patients have been among the most vulnerable during these unprecedented times and we need your help to continue to be able to provide lifesaving research, programs and services here in Southern Nevada. The Power In Purple campaign is currently recruiting women from all industries who are willing to pledge to raise a minimum of $2,500 for the duration of the campaign. For more information or to nominate an individual, visit powerinpurplelv. com or contact Shannon Moore at Shannon.moore@ cancer.org or 775-910-3329. The campaign dates have been extended through August 31, 2020. Anyone can help save lives and raise money. If Power In Purple isn’t for you, please let us know. We are sure to have a campaign or event that fits!

DR. KASHYAP’S PROTOCOL GIVES US HOPE THAT WE CAN GET OUR LIFE BACK AND ENJOY THE FUTURE. By Roselyn Poon imbalance and how to fix it. Each plan is different for everyone and may involve replacement of hormones, supplements or dietary modifications. The goal is to have more energy, feel better about yourself so that you are eating better, sleeping better, and have better physical, mental and sexual health. Dr. Deepali Kashyap is the founder of Galleria Women’s Health. She is board certified and one of the top female doctors and gynecologists in Henderson. Dr. Kashyap has dedicated her life to helping us deal with the vast array of women’s health issues, ranging from abnormal pelvic bleeding, pelvic pain management, infertility, menopause management and family planning to overall sexual health. However, first and foremost, Dr. Kashyap is a woman just like you and me. A couple of years ago, Dr. Kashyap started to feel that things were not quite right. She didn’t feel her best and was constantly tired. Given her age at the time, she thought that it was probably normal, but after a while she asked her peer group what they thought was going on and surprise, surprise, they told her that it was normal and nothing could be done about it. Just go with the flow like the rest of us. It was at that point that Dr. Kashyap made the life-changing decision to ignore the general consensus of opinion that women of a “certain age” are doomed to a future of being constantly tired and feeling out of sorts, and find out the real truth. Thankfully, Dr. Kashyap subscribes to the belief that normal doesn’t make it right, and she has uncovered a path that gives women the chance to fight against the generally accepted biological aging that most feel is inevitable. a n i r b a S Capannolo Eisinga P R O F E SSI O NAL T E NNI S ST AND O UT T UR NE D NUR SE P R AC T I T I O NE R By Paul Harasim You won’t find many, if any, nurse practitioners with Sabrina Capannolo Eisinga’s background. Nor will you find many with her workout schedule. Today she is a UNLV School of Medicine OB-GYN nurse practitioner, but played professional tennis for five years before deciding to embark on a career in nursing. “I have found that the mental and emotional toughness you need in athletics, which includes the ability to manage stress, has helped in nursing,” says the woman whose playing career included tournaments in New Zealand, Central America and throughout Europe. Now in her early 30s and the mother of two young children, Eisinga was once a tennis sensation in Las Vegas as a teenager. At Silverado High School— she was Sabrina Capannolo before marriage—she was the Nevada state champion in 2001 and named to the high school All-American Team. Prior to turning professional in 2007, she attended Arizona State University on a full tennis scholarship, majoring in kinesiology. Rising to the team’s No.1 spot—she recorded the most overall singles wins on the team from 2003 to 2004 with 28 and rose to the Sweet 16 at the Pac-10 Championships—she beat the NCAA’s defending champion before turning pro. Like most young female tennis stars, she started on a professional satellite tour
with the hope of earning enough points to join the Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) elite circuit. Her wins didn’t pile up enough, however, to join the likes of Serena and Venus Williams on the WTA tour. “It wasn’t a glamorous life,” Eisinga says. “I was traveling by myself, with no coach or physical trainer. I couldn’t afford a trainer. I was always trying to find housing because hotels were so expensive. I was breaking even or losing money ... I got burnt out.” Long an admirer of the healthcare profession, a sister is now a physician and a brother is in his fourth year of medical school, she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Nevada State College and began working at Sunrise Hospital in labor and delivery. She thrived in her position, yet as much as she enjoyed her work, she wanted more responsibility, so she enrolled in UNLV’s nurse practitioner program. When she graduated in December, she was thrilled to join the UNLV School of Medicine OB-GYN team. She says what makes her a better nurse, mother and wife is a three-day-a-week workout program that includes: running three miles; using the stair master for 20 minutes; doing 200 abdominal exercises; and working out for 10 minutes on the endless arm rope machine. When she works out, her husband, former UNLV tennis star Les Eisinga, who now works in commercial real estate, shares child watching duties along with her parents.

“I have found that the mental and emotional toughness you need in athletics, which includes the ability to manage stress, has helped in nursing.” She also plays one hour of tennis each week with her husband and is just starting a thrice weekly weight training program for her upper and lower body that includes lunges, squats and deadlifts. “Workouts,” she says, “help with my overall mood and keep me energized throughout the day.” In her new role, she is delivering primary healthcare to women. This includes well-woman care consisting of annual assessments, including: screening evaluation, immunizations based on age and risk factors, and counsel on preventative care. She directs prenatal management and works with women on family planning, fertility and urogynecology. Doctors deliver the babies. “I’m working more closely with patients, whom I love,” Eisinga says. “I make a difference from the start.” MOTIVATING
Living Younger Longer By Roselyn Poon
TUR NING O N YOUR FOUN T A I N OF YOUT H
How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were? ~Satchel Paige Aging is inevitable; however, old age is optional because it’s personal. You can decide if you are old or simply of an age. Aging and old age affects all of us sooner or later; the trick is deferring old age to as late as possible by introducing lifestyle changes now. The two most important things I learned from Tony Robbins are: • We will do more to escape PAIN than to receive PLEASURE. • We need a big enough WHY to change. Let’s start by taking a serious look at old age and see if we can crank up enough pain to get you to turn on your Fountain of Youth. The following is a brief look at some of the issues that will arise leading up to and during old age. Most can occur at any time; however, they are more prevalent and intense during classic “old age.”

Think about the last time you woke up feeling tired, with blurry vision and muscle soreness. Now, imagine waking up every day feeling that way, with the added knowledge that there is no quick fix. Remember how difficult simple things were when you had your arm, leg or some other body part in a plaster cast or heavily bandaged? I bet that was the longest six weeks of your life. Now, think about having this kind of challenge, thanks to arthritis, every day for the rest of your life. Most elderly people find even the simplest tasks, such as dressing, reading, getting to the doctor, answering the phone, showering and pushing a grocery cart challenging. Paying bills and keeping up with the ever-changing government and medical forms each year is hard enough for you now, so imagine what it will be like 10 years from now. Everyday tasks that you currently have no problem with, and in fact don’t even think about, represent challenges, barriers and limitations for our elderly and maybe even the future you.
Today, your cell phone is seen as an extension of your arm. You have adapted to the current technology, well maybe you understand 80%, but that’s OK because you know how to use the functions that are important to you. However, technology is zooming ahead at a ridiculous rate and if you don’t make a serious effort to stay up with it, one day you will find that you only understand 20% and you are out of the loop. Many elderly people are out of today’s communication loop and may not even speak to another person for days. Imagine yourself isolated and wondering if you would speak to anyone today. How would you feel? How do you maintain your independence when everything around you is constantly changing and becoming alien to you? In the not too distant future, our roads may well be packed with driverless vehicles, with new road rules to accommodate them, and unless your car is electric it may not even be allowed on the roads. Flying cars are set to arrive in

the not too distant future. In 2019, the most widespread conditions affecting those 65 and older include arthritis, heart disease, stroke, cancer, pneumonia, stress and the flu. Accidents, especially falls that result in hip fractures, are also unfortunately common in the elderly. One in eight baby boomers will get Alzheimer’s disease after 65. Alzheimer’s is reaching a crisis point. It steals your memories, your independence, your control and ultimately your life. These are just some of the challenge’s old age has to offer. Is this what you want to look forward to over the next few years? From where I’m standing, there is no upside to getting older any faster than you need to, and in fact, there are plenty of great reasons to becoming younger.
Taking old age seriously and believing that you can do something about it is your weapon of choice for your future.
You have an alternative to old age, and it starts with knowing that you have options. Just because everyone around you has accepted old age as inevitable, and believes that they are already moving into their twilight years, attributing every ache and pain to aging, doesn’t mean you have to. I firmly believe that just because something is seen as normal, doesn’t necessarily make it right, especially when it comes to old age. Normal is the word we use to describe conforming to a standard; usual, typical, average or expected. There is no mention of normal meaning right. The critical first step is to forget about your chronological age. They are right when they say that it is just a number. It allows others to slot you neatly into a category: middle-aged, old-aged, teen-aged, and treat you accordingly. In reality, there are at least three different ways we can gauge your aging; however, the most important is your psychological age. This is how you feel inside and how you see yourself. Your psychological age and your rate of
SPRING 2020: LVWOMANMAGAZINE.COM
aging are controlled by your state of mind, the beliefs you have regarding where you are in your life timeline and what the future will be like. If your chronological age is 65, but you feel 55, then it becomes your choice as to which of the two ages is the controller on your timeline. The trick is that you must truly believe that you are your psychological age. For example, seeing your future and making decisions as a 55-year-old person would. You can’t say you are 55 and run your life as a 65-year-old. I go into the seven steps of reclaiming valuable youthful years in my book; however, if you have created a big enough “why you should reset your inner clock,” don’t wait a moment longer, just accept your new younger age as is. Don’t give your chronological age a moment’s thought from here on out. Now you know that you have options, and options equal power. Break Your Addiction to Codependent Relationships Mindfulness Meditations to Help You Heal by Beverly Conyers If you’ve found yourself in a cycle of codependent relationships, rest assured that there is a way out. Learning how to overcome codependency will take some deep inner work, but with the help of mindfulness meditation, this process can become much easier. Mindfulness, and mindfulness meditation, can help you recover from anything and everything in life. Whether that’s combating self-sabotaging behaviors, healing shame, and reaching emotional sobriety, or battling addictive tendencies and releasing trauma, mindfulness meditation techniques can help. Many of these practices can be applied to codependency recovery too. But first, what is mindfulness? The definition of mindfulness is: “The practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one's thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.” But, what is codependency anyway? Codependence is most often rooted in childhood; becoming a learned behavior that affects relationships. A codependent relationship typically forms with a romantic partner, although it can happen with a friend or family member. The definition of codependency is: “A psychological condition or a relationship in which a person
WELL-BEING
is controlled or manipulated by another who is affected with a pathological condition (such as an addiction to alcohol or heroin) broadly: dependence on the needs of or control by another.” When it comes to romantic relationships, codependent partners tend to put their needs aside in order to support, help, or ‘fix’ the person they’re in a relationship with. The codependent partner typically believes that they will only receive love from their partner if they sacrifice themselves in this way. Also, they often gain a sense of identity, self-confidence, and value from the ways in which they help their partner. In many cases, a codependent partner may stay with someone who is abusive or has a substance abuse problem or addiction. This way, they feel needed and can work to gain their partner’s love. A codependent person draws so much of their own self-worth from their partner that they develop a sort of relationship or love addiction that keeps them in a codependency cycle. A few signs of codependency include: · Valuing others’ approval more than your own approval · Having difficulty making decisions for yourself · Fears of abandonment · Poor self-esteem · Having a severe dependence on
relationships, often to your own detriment · Having an inflated sense of responsibility for what other people do · People-pleasing behaviors · Caretaking behaviors With these meditation techniques, you can learn how to practice mindfulness in a way that can help you heal and overcome your codependent behavior. Here are a few meditations that can help: 1. Feel the pause (To connect with your thoughts) Start by sitting or lying down in a comfortable position and close your eyes. Take a moment to notice the physical sensations, sounds, smells, thoughts, and feelings that come up. Be aware of what’s happening in the moment but don’t try to do anything about it. Breathe as you normally would. 2. Letting go of thoughts (To stop worrying about others’ approval) Begin by lying or sitting down in a comfortable position. Close your eyes, settle in and start to breathe normally. Bring your attention to your breath and notice how it moves into your nose and out of your body. Notice how it feels as it leaves your body. Softly say “breathe” to yourself at the beginning of every inhalation and exhalation. If your mind wanders, recognize those intrusive thoughts as “not breathe.” Without judgement, let the thought
SPRING 2020: LVWOMANMAGAZINE.COM
go and bring your attention to your breathing. Continue this until you finish your meditation. Can you let your thoughts fly away like birds? 3. Relearning your loveliness (To learn self-love) Get into a comfortable position either sitting or lying down. You can close your eyes or focus on a point in the distance. When ready, quietly chant or think these phrases: “May I be free from fear.” “May I be free from suffering.” “May I be happy.” “May I be filled with loving kindness.” Choose the phrase or phrases that mean the most to you and repeat them over and over for two to three minutes. Do this even if you don’t believe them. Even if you don’t think you are worthy. Plant these seeds of self-love so they can grow and blossom within you over time. 4. Change your life (To find self-compassion) Try journaling to explore this concept of selfcompassion. To start, find a quiet place where
you can be alone for 10 to 15 minutes. Use a computer or a pen and paper and fill an entire page with your thoughts on self-compassion. Consider these ideas to get started: What negative self-talk would you need to give up to be more self-compassionate? What does selfcompassion mean to you? How can moments of self-compassion improve your life? How can you practice self-compassion today? If you’re finally ready to break the cycle of codependent relationships by getting to the root cause of the problem, mindfulness meditations can help. These mindfulness techniques can help you get in touch with your thoughts, needs, and emotions. Living on
The Edge by Roselyn Poon
What comes to mind when you think of the type of people who live on the edge? Maybe adventurers, adrenalin junkies, risk takers, extreme sportsmen, gamblers, people who choose to live a life you consider dangerous? What about fringe dwellers? Do words like hippies, freaks or outsiders pop up? Prior to the COVID-19 lockdown, I probably had a list similar to yours. However, thanks to the lockdown, I learned something astonishing that has changed my understanding of our current society to come. I discovered that our elderly, or seniors, are involuntary fringe dwellers living on the edge of society. Note: I said involuntary and it may further surprise you to know that seniors are the largest marginalized cohort in western society today. The principal reason for this travesty is technology. Technology is the agent of change that is transitioning our society at breakneck speed from peoplecentric to techno-centric, and there is no turning back, at least not in our lifetime. This techno-centric way of life is great for you and I, and anyone else who still functions in the mainstream; however, for those who for any number of reasons have been left on the outer edge, it is filled with fear and trepidation.

NAVI GA T I N G T ECHN OL OGI CA L CHAL L EN GES DURI NG T HE PANDEM I C Think back a couple of months when you first heard about the virus on the news or social media. The key points that the media stressed was the vulnerability of the elderly, anyone over 60 years of age, and the speed with which it was spreading. Like me, you probably raced to your PC or iPhone and started trawling through Google, YouTube, news feeds and the social media channels you usually spend time on with the aim of finding out exactly what was going on and what you needed to do to avoid the Grim Reaper. You discussed it with everyone you came in contact with and your thirst for information may have even inspired you to actually reach out to anyone you knew who was in the medical field or the front line. I bet that within a couple of days you were wired into the information channels and organizing your life saving strategy. I know this because I was right there with you. It wasn’t until I was invited to talk about face masks on a local news program that I learned what was going on in the non-techno world of the elderly. Following the broadcast we were inundated with telephone calls from scared seniors who wanted to buy personal face masks. They were so grateful to hear that there was a local company making masks that they could buy over the phone. I learned that most of them had zero access to technology and were terrified
to leave their homes because of what they had heard on the news. The most vulnerable sector of our community was isolated and fraught with fear. I talked to people living alone who had no relatives to ask for help; others had older siblings dying of cancer with no way to get masks. There were times when all I could do was cry when I got off the phone. One lady called to place a second order for masks because the first order she received was the wrong size. I could barely hear her trembling voice as she explained what had happened. She wasn’t asking for a credit or another order for free, she automatically assumed that it was her fault and she wanted to make sure we were not angry with her and allow her to place another order. I checked her order and called her back to explain that it was our fault and we would ship the right size to her free of charge immediately. She was so happy you could instantly hear the relief in her voice. All was good in the world again. Many seniors had ordered masks to give to their neighbors and others living in their community. Violet, a beautiful little lady, kept ordering masks, and one day when she called, I happened to answer the phone. I discovered that she kept giving them away to others who didn’t know how

to get to the shops, or order on the internet and desperately needed masks. In her last order, I included a special purple paisley mask for her, and she sent me the most beautiful heartfelt thank you card. The wonderful seniors I came in contact with are intelligent, clear-thinking people who are living on the outside of our new techno-world. They have been practicing isolation and social distancing longer than we have; for some it has been decades. They know they are not as robust as they once were, they just need us to remember they are here and that they need a little help from time to time. I am known for writing upbeat stories and, believe it or not, this is upbeat. In the end, they could get their masks without fear of being scammed or taken advantage of. They were able to help themselves and each other and I believe they went to bed feeling a little bit better about themselves and their world. Remember, the one thing we all have in common is that one day we will fall into the category referred to as the elderly, unless of course something untoward happens beforehand. Either way, be prepared. Roselyn Poon is the author of “Reset Your Inner Clock and Live Younger Longer, available on Amazon.

Handling Difficult Conversations with Aging Loved Ones
77 If the recent times had you spending more time with your family, you might have noticed that some aging loved ones may need to consider senior care, you are not alone. While these issues are often brought to the forefront during the holiday season, the conversations typically happen yearround as families have to make difficult decisions about senior care. “Every New Year, we see a huge uptick in interest and demand for senior care options, including assisted living,” says Jim Rosenthal, CEO of caring.com. “It’s common for our partnering communities to see an increase of more than 30% in the number of inquiries and visits in January and February.” Signs that your loved one may benefit from assisted living services include difficulty eating, dressing, bathing and incontinence. This is not an exhaustive list; if your loved one shows any signs that they are struggling to maintain the level of health, safety, and hygiene that they have had previously, it is likely time for your family to start the conversation about getting some type of senior care. It can be hard for some seniors to accept that they need help—the thought of losing one’s independence or moving out of their lifelong home and into a residential care facility may make them resistant to the idea of getting care. Many people find the conversation about assisted living to be difficult, albeit necessary. While the following guidelines will not eliminate all of the challenges associated with this topic, they can help you better handle these tough conversations and the overall process. Do Your Research Ahead of Time It may be tempting to make a comment to your parent or sibling as soon as you notice your loved one doesn’t move as well as they used to or has lost weight. But, don’t impulsively bring up the need for care. It will benefit all parties involved for you to take some time to think about the situation and research the types of care that you think may most benefit your loved one. Researching costs and the pros and cons of different care options, facilities, and providers will prevent you
from wasting time and energy discussing an option that isn’t feasible or practical for your situation. Start Small Part of your research process should involve thinking about how to broach the subject of getting care as delicately as possible. It’s a good idea to start small by first asking your loved one about how they feel they’re managing housework or any health conditions. If they seem resistant to the idea of care, start by making a suggestion for a small change, such as hiring a weekly housekeeper or purchasing a medical alert system for your loved one to use. Choose Your Words Carefully When discussing the idea of moving to assisted living, be sure to focus on the positive aspects and the ways in which it can improve your relative’s quality of life, such as the amenities and social

Don’t repeatedly bring up what your loved one can’t do on their own, but rather all of the things that assisted living can bring to their life. Additionally, emphasizing that you want to help your loved one and don’t want to force anything on them can help them remain calm throughout the conversation. Make sure your loved one knows that you want them to retain as much independence as possible, but also want them to be healthy and safe. Listen to Your Loved One’s Opinions and Try to Be as Accommodating as Possible Within reason, do your best to take your loved one’s opinions into account regarding their care. living options rather than residential care. If cost is a concern, as it is for many people, be sure to look into your state’s Medicaid waiver programs, which can give seniors more flexibility in choosing their care. While still making sure they’ll have the assistance they need, try to honor your loved one’s preferences to make the transition to assisted living, whether in or out of the home, as smooth as possible. Be Patient Remember that it can be very challenging for someone to accept that they need help, and don’t get angry if your loved one isn’t receptive to the idea at first. Understand that you may need to bring up the topic several times or present your loved one with several different care options until you agree on a plan that you both are comfortable with. Don’t be discouraged if it takes some time. It takes many people at least two to three months to find care for their loved one following the initial conversation, and for most, it takes even longer. In some situations, such as if your loved one has a major health condition that they can no longer manage independently, it’s important to find them quality care as fast as possible. But, when circumstances allow, taking your time to explore several options to find one that works for both of you is worth the effort. Caring.com is a leading senior care resource and referral service for family caregivers seeking information and support as they care for aging parents, spouses, and other loved ones.
