LETTER FROM THE

publisher Can you believe summer is here already? Now that we are several months into 2019, how are you doing with the goals you set at the beginning of the year? One of my goals was to give myself permission ‌ permission to pause; permission to play; permission to just allow life to be what it is; to stop resisting and having to control outcomes. It is something I long for. I have had to come to terms with accepting that I am a work in progress and this mindset is not going to happen overnight. You will find a few articles in this issue that provide guidance in this area. I am excited to share them with you in hopes that we can grow together, if this is something you are also challenged with. While this issue is out, I will reach a milestone birthday and have been looking back on my years. Wow, the things I have accomplished and overcome. If you are like me, I try to be a better version of myself every Photography by B&T Capture/TrinaMarie single day. I can also get caught up in that and not pause to appreciate how far I have come. Yes, there are still so many dreams I have for myself, and I may or may not be where I thought I would be by now, but what I have accomplished to date is something to celebrate. It is so important that we celebrate ourselves, often. This issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine offers many inspiring and educational articles to support you on your journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. From living younger longer to branding tips, to why interaction is so important and many more, my hope is that you will find motivation within these pages and feel guided to become a better you. We spotlight doctors who are dedicated to providing the best medical care in Southern Nevada. They are staying on top of cutting-edge advancements and technology in order to provide you with the latest treatments to help you feel healthy and full of vitality. Dr. Victoria Chen, who graces our cover with her beautiful daughters, talks about how important motivation and mentoring are in her family’s life. While the heat is about to engulf the Las Vegas Valley, we encourage you to pack up and go on a road trip to some beautiful, cooler nearby destinations. Oh, and grab a book or two from our list of great reads before you head out. Most importantly, this summer, do not forget to give yourself permission to pause; to play; to be YOU. Thank you for allowing us to lead, motivate and celebrate you ... one issue at a time. Gratefully,

Stephanie Kocher Happiness is letting go of what you think your life is supposed to look like and celebrating it for everything that it is. ~Mandy Hale

LETTER FROM THE

managing editor While in the thick of the winter, somewhere in between chunky snowflakes, ice in the swimming pool and the cool spring winds, I declared that I will not complain about the heat when summer (finally) arrived. Here we are, with summer upon us and I am diligently trying to stick to my declaration. There are many ways we can escape the heat or celebrate the season and whichever you choose, we have you covered. As we wrap up the brunt of allergy season (it was brutal this year, no?), we talk about the benefits of halotherapy (salt therapy), which is said to clear up the sniffles. Our Coffee, Wines & Dines section covers new hot spots to meet up with friends and enjoy morning cups of caffeinated beverages, patio dining or ideas for new poolside cocktails. In our Summer Escape story, we highlight several cooler locations that you can easily experience with a quick road trip. Regardless of where you decide to go or what you decide to do, our What’s Trending section has you covered for all the necessities to make your summer memorable. Our cover story, featuring Dr. Victoria Chen, inspires as she discusses how she manages her thriving career, along with successfully raising two girls who are excelling in school and in life. And finally, we cannot think about summer without a piece on water safety. As a mother, this was a very difficult piece to write, but such an important message to get across to any and every one who spends time near the water during the summer. Two mothers share their family’s story of experiencing a drowning. Please impart their stories with everyone you know who has a pool and/or young children. Savor what this season has to offer us—heat and all. Cheers!

Bergamot

MORE THAN JUST A NOVELTY SCENT T h i s S u r p r i s i n g S u p e r F r u i t i s Ta k i n g t h e Wo r l d o f Wo m e n ’s H e a l t h b y S t o r m By Jennifer Florendo You are used to buying it in a store, smelling it in candles or essential oils and drinking it in tea. The fragrant, citrusy scent of bergamot is unmistakable. Yet, it is packing more of a powerful punch than just simply being a novelty item or afternoon beverage. The fruit itself resembles an orange by its size and a yellow or green coloring resembles a lemon. What lies inside of the peel is making a big name for itself in women’s health.

“Phytonutrients have the ability to alter many aspects of women’s health. Cardiovascular, metabolic, cholesterol, lipid profiles and unpleasant symptomatology can all be impacted positively with phytonutrients,” said Dr. Haase. “A lot of women have mood swings, an energy decrease, especially in the morning, as well as night sweats, hot flashes and vaginal dryness that are all additional symptoms women often experience.”

Dr. Gerald Haase, clinical professor of surgery at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado, was involved in Cooperative Research and Development Agreements with the Department of Defense and NASA to evaluate the health benefits of micronutrients. While expanding this work to more plant-based nutrients, (also known as phytonutrients), it was discovered that the bergamot fruit could make strong impacts on women’s health.

The bergamot plant, only found in the proper concentrations in the Calabrian region located in the southern tip of Italy, is really unique in how it is being used for health benefits. There, the volcanic ash soil makes for perfect organic growing conditions, without any exposure to pesticides. The skin of the bergamot plant is used in low concentration production of products such as tea, cosmetics and essential oils. The juice from the plant, however, is used for affecting women’s

health. That Calabrian region yields the most potent bergamot fruit, which enables a bergamot polyphenolic fraction (BPF) of 47 percent or greater, which is the most concentrated extract anywhere. High concentrations of the fruit juice are shown to have a positive impact on metabolic function, glucose metabolism, lipid profiles and more. “The reason it can do that is because it has a unique formulation called BPF, which has a particularly high concentration of five specific flavonoids and glycosides. These particular elements are what drives some of the metabolic impact that we see in this formulation,” said Dr. Haase. In recent clinical trials, the BPF affects cardiovascular profiles dramatically. On average, total cholesterol dropped 31 percent, LDLs (“bad” cholesterol) dropped by 39 percent, HDLs (“good” cholesterol) went up 42 percent and triglycerides dropped by 38 percent. “We have also seen many other health benefits,” says Dr. Haase. “Stamina goes up, muscle recovery time goes down and oxygen uptake increases, meaning that your heart rate stays stable. It decreases inflammation and has had a profound impact on metabolism, including weight control, liver function and a decrease in visceral fat,” he continued. BergaMet NA has taken the bergamot extract and turned it into what some women are considering a miracle worker. By using the extract and combining it with other plant components, they have created a product line designed specifically for women’s health.

The addition of maca, which is a vegetable that is produced in the high Andes mountain range in Peru, provides amino acids, carbohydrates, minerals, proteins and fatty acids making it a very efficient phytonutrient. “The other thing it does is have very direct effects on depression, anxiety and stress. That is truly helpful for every woman I know,” said Dr. Haase. “It also helps bone health, which is a concerning factor for many women as they age and bone health diminishes.” Tribulus, a leaf that is grown in Europe, Asia and Africa, is most commonly known for reducing blood sugar and cholesterol, altering hormone levels, and increasing sexual function and libido. In this case, the tribulus gets its metabolic function from steroidal saponins. These saponins have a modulating effect on the immune function of your body. Finally, the last addition to the base is damiana, a shrub that is prevalent in North America and South America and commonly known to increase libido. In the clinical trial, it has also shown to have a positive impact on depression, weight control, and on blood sugar control. All of those are combined to produce BergaFEMME, (see special offer on page 19) which may help women of all ages balance out their hormones, maintain higher energy levels, reduce cholesterol levels and act as an anti-inflammatory. Happy and healthy days are just around the corner.

Note: As with any medicine or nutritional supplement that is ingested, please be sure to consult your health care professional before taking.

HALOTHERAPY The Benefits of Being Salty By Ava Mucikyan

“For her the ocean was more than a dream, it was a place she needed to visit to find herself. And when she returned to the city, you could see the sun in her eyes, the wind in her hair and taste the infinite salt on her lips.” - Jose Chaves Take a deep breath, recline back and close your eyes. You are transformed into a magical salty escape … As you drift away to the soothing music, you can taste the salt on your lips and feel all your stresses just dissipate. You are probably thinking you are on the beach … close, but not quite. You are in a Himalayan salt cave, covered in over 20,000 pounds of pristine mineral Himalayan salt, illuminated with soothing warm lights for the ultimate in relaxation. Since the days of Egypt’s Queen Cleopatra, salt therapies have been known to have therapeutic benefits. Whether dipping themselves in the Dead Sea or taking treks into Eastern European salt caves, sufferers of many different respiratory and skin ailments have benefited from the restorative powers of salts. In 1843, a Polish physician named Feliks Boczkowski first wrote about the benefit of salt mines. He noted that salt miners had much lower rates of lung disease compared to the rest of the population. He attributed their good health to the salt cave air that was saturated with saline dust. Soon halotherapy (“halos” means salt in Greek) became a common drug-free treatment for many chronic lung and skin conditions. A 45-minute treatment inside a Himalayan salt cave is the equivalent to spending three days by the beach. What is Salt Therapy (Halotherapy) and How Does it Work? Halotherapy is a 100-percent natural, drug-free treatment developed by scientists and researchers that brings a once inaccessible natural resource to the urban steps of our community. It is the process of breathing micronized particles of pure pharmaceutical salt inside the salt cave, which is a completely sterile environment. The halogenerator is the heart of the salt cave. It grinds and distributes the pharmaceutical salt into the air, recreating that natural salt cave microclimate. When breathing these micronized particles, they penetrate deep into your respiratory tract, down to the hard-to-reach bottom alveoli of the lungs. The result is a clearing of any bacteria and mucous buildup, reduced inflammation and the opening of constricted airways. Halotherapy provides natural allergy relief, which is a common issue in Las Vegas. It is also known to boost stamina for athletes and singers and is a great way to maintain a healthy immune system. Children respond particularly well to halotherapy, considering their immune system is so fresh. Thus, halotherapy significantly enhances health and body vigor, making it safe for all ages. If you are someone who suffers from any of the conditions halotherapy is known to benefit, you may want to give it a try. It helps treat several respiratory and skin disorders, such as: allergies, asthma, bronchitis, cold and flu, COPD, ear infections, eczema, emphysema, fatigue, hay fever, pneumonia, psoriasis, rhinitis, sinus infections, sleep apnea, smoker’s cough, snoring, wheezing, stress, anxiety and more.

Summer 2019 â—¦ lvwomanmagazine.com

Recall the last time that you made a mistake. Were you hard on yourself or did you give yourself a pass and recognize that you are a work in progress? As women, we tend to be the hardest on ourselves. We will hold ourselves to a level of perfection that is impossible to reach. When you think of yourself as a work in progress, you recognize that you do not know everything, that you make mistakes and that you are still learning each and every day of your life.

1

To fail is to succeed:

2

Find the answers within yourself:

3

Accept it or change it:

4

Take a do-over:

5

You are not who you were:

How could you possibly know what will work best for your life or business if you do not fail at times? When you accept that failure is a part of success and stop giving yourself a hard time when it happens, you shift your mindset. Next time you fail, step back and look at the result and come up with a better plan instead of quitting. This could mean asking for help, education, a mentor, an accountability partner or a combination of these and more.

This is not always the easiest thing to do. Sometimes it is easier to look at fault elsewhere: the system, what you were taught, a person in your life, job or business that did it wrong. It makes a huge difference when you have the ability to stop for a moment and look at what you could have done differently. If my assistant makes a mistake in my social media postings, I recognize that expectations may not have been communicated clearly. Everything changes when you can look at your part in the mistake or failure. Sometimes it will be changing employees, friends or relationships, but first look at yourself and the decisions you have made to get you where you are today. Then recognize you can change them.

It may not always be that simple but think about it. If you have a situation that you are not completely happy with at this moment, does it help to worry about it or obsess over it? More than likely the answer will be no. Instead, make a choice in this moment to accept it for what it is, but potentially changing it in the future. Or make a change. Change the situation, make a different choice or start a plan today defining what steps you need to take. When you look at your life in an “accept it or change it” manner, it takes stress off you and your life.

If you look back on a situation and wish that you would have reacted differently or handled it better, you are not alone. While it might be too late to change what happened, you can learn from it and change how you react the next time. Another example of a do-over would be when the situation allows it, to apologize. Recognize what happened and make a choice to change the circumstances. Being right is not the most important thing in the world, sometimes relationships are more important than being right.

Stop looking backward. Do not rehash the mistakes you made or the decisions you wish you did not make. Your past is exactly that: your past. Know that today you are not who you were then, and tomorrow you may be different than who you are today. As a work in progress, you learn every day from the choices you have made. Step back and realize those choices were made for a reason and give yourself a pass. Spend time in the present and know that you can be whomever you choose to be today.

When you own that you are a work in progress, you give yourself permission to find fault and then find the ways to succeed.

Permission The Path to Balance By Jan Tanaka

We all know what it is like to feel out of balance with life.

PERMISSION to scroll through social media.

When we are managing work, family, me-time, and all other priorities, it is easy to fall into a rut of frustration and stress. We lose our joy, our creativity, our productivity … our sanity … We claim victory if we do not collapse before the day is over.

Yes. I went there.

I understand. I have plenty of balls to keep up in the air every day. I am a wife, a leader and a key decision maker. I have a job, I work out, and I teach night school. I juggle family, chores, social events, and … you get the idea. So how do I keep my cool, keep my schedule and my smile all at the same time? One word: PERMISSION. When it seems like everyone and everything around you is shouting for your attention, you probably feel guilty if you try to shut them out. But the adage that says, “You cannot pour from an empty cup” is still around for a reason. All the things we feel guilty about? I give myself permission to do them. PERMISSION to be still and quiet. When our days are full and hectic, it can be hard to find time to be still and quiet. It helps if you dedicate a little space for this first thing in the morning before the day gets rolling. This takes the form of 10 minutes of meditation for me. It might be journaling, reading, sketching or yoga for you. It is okay and healthy to take a little me-time. Go ahead and fill your cup with a little quiet before you dive into your day.

28

When we are working, we know the world of social media is speeding along without us. We also know we are not supposed to be thumbing through Facebook and Instagram. But deprivation creates its own breed of distraction as we wonder what we may be missing out on. To counteract this issue, I set a timer on my phone that allows me 15 to 20 minutes to scroll to my heart’s content. PERMISSION to take a break. I often take a walk around the building to clear my head or go off-site to get lunch. The change of scenery helps me to unwind and recalibrate. Revisit your quiet time preferences, if you like. Do some stretching or read a chapter of a book. Take a mindful moment with a piece of chocolate or breathing exercises. I also recommend turning your office into your sanctuary with music, decorations, candles … anything that makes you happy. A happy workspace creates serenity amidst chaos. PERMISSION to not finish your task list. Every night I review what I did and did not get accomplished, and no matter where the balance lies, I do not beat myself up over it. I remind myself that I did my best and that my “in box” will never be empty.

PERMISSION to visualize what you desire.

Celebrate what did get done. Find things to be grateful for. Feel into the promise of tomorrow.

As I am getting showered and dressed and ready to greet the world, I imagine how I want my day to go.

Permission is neither a cure-all, nor an allowance for irresponsibility.

Visualize all the details and the feelings of everything going your way. Do not be humble; know that you deserve all that goodness! Consider what steps you can take toward this experience and distinguish between the things you can and cannot control. Keeping a regular calendar or schedule book can help with this by ensuring you are organized and not overbooked.

It is not going to smooth out all the bumps in the road ahead. And it is not an excuse for being lazy or careless. It is, however, the key to both reclaiming your joy and boosting your productivity. No matter what roles and responsibilities you are juggling, you can bring yourself back into balance by giving yourself permission to rest, to make mistakes, to be happy—to be human.

Introducing

KYLE B. RAHN U n i t e d Wa y ’s F i r s t F e m a l e P r e s i d e n t a n d C E O This year has already been a historic year for women in Nevada. We have celebrated the first femalemajority state legislature in the history of our country, and locally, we have welcomed Ms. Kyle B. Rahn as the first female president and CEO of United Way of Southern Nevada. For those who know Kyle, she is an inspiration. She is a go-getter who rolls up her sleeves and gets to work on the real problems facing our community. It is natural for her to step in when she sees the opportunity, most likely because it runs in her family. “My dad was ‘Mr. Basketball’ in Indiana, which is sort of the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy for a high school basketball player in the state,” Kyle says. “He also was state tennis champion four years in a row and he was highly decorated in World War II. After that, he graduated college, became a businessman and was in the Indiana State Senate for 10 years. I grew up with an achiever, but if you knew my dad, you never saw a hyped-up, driven person. He was loving and kind and funny. I think that’s where I get my sense of humor.” Kyle grew up the youngest of five siblings on a farm outside of Muncie, Indiana. Kyle’s family was extremely active in their community, both in business and in improving lives. They founded a local investment banking firm and her father and grandfather led United Way campaigns in their hometown. Kyle started in the family business as a child. After college, she developed the first human resources department at her family’s business then ventured out on her own, taking management jobs in the tech sector and launching her own marketing company.

At 45, she was living in Tyler, Texas, caring for her two sons and her husband’s elderly parents (“the joys of my life”) and running a successful direct mail company. Then came the news that her father was dying of Alzheimer’s. As she managed her grief over her father’s illness, she prayed for an opportunity to serve in the nonprofit sector, and the clear answer was an open position in development at Mercy Ships International in 2007. “Mercy Ships is when I saw abject poverty and mercy in action, people serving on that hospital ship in western Africa for free,” she says, “and that is when I knew I had found my heart to serve.” In 2013, Kyle joined the United Way of the National Capital Area, which “prepared me for the understanding of how United Way should function in a community,” Kyle says. “It historically is the center of the nonprofit community. That is why it is an enormous and important part of every community, not just in America but around the world.” Next came four years as the senior executive of fund development for the National Society of Black Engineers

(NSBE), “working to meet NSBE’s goal of graduating 10,000 African-American engineers per year by 2025,” says Kyle. “I did the same thing at NSBE that we are doing here at United Way of Southern Nevada,” she says. “We are preparing a pipeline where we are supporting our citizens from early childhood education to the workplace. Because Las Vegas is the fastest-growing city in the country, we, the United Way, need to work with our partners to ensure that our people are adequately prepared for the job growth that will come as a result of this explosive population growth.” Kyle is ready to help make that happen. After years of living on airplanes and out of suitcases, Kyle says her move to Las Vegas was “entirely calculated.” “I have never been in a community that has been so warm and kind and open and generous as I have experienced here,” she says. “It is incredible and I love making it my new and forever hometown.”

LA STREGA B r i n g i n g a Ta s t e o f I t a l y t o S u m m e r l i n Executive Chef Partner Gina Marinelli shares her passion for food, family and friends through a culinary journey of Italy at her first restaurant, La Strega. Meaning “witch” in Italian, La Strega’s ambiance will bewitchingly transport guests to Italy the moment they enter. Custom décor and accents collected from abroad create an authentic European setting. The restaurant’s artistic centerpiece is a one-of-a-kind mural inspired by the witches of Benevento and their iconic walnut tree. Spanning multiple walls, the mural was created by local artist Holly Rae Vaughn.

Dessert offerings include The Bomba, a house-made donut filled with coconut budino, and Chianti Affogato, as well as the classic, yet often hard-to-find, savory option of artisanal cheeses. For the picky eaters, offerings include custom-built pizzas and pastas. La Strega also features an expertly curated wine menu from the former Giada sommelier, Stephanie Torres, and a handcrafted cocktail program featuring iconic favorites, as well as non-alcoholic libations made with Italian spritzers and bitters.

The menu showcases personal interpretations of Italian cuisine infused with contemporary, yet simple flavors. Appetizers include raw selections, such as Hamachi served crudo style with chili gremolata, truffle salt and cilantro, and from-the-farm options, like Burrata di Stefano served with spring garlic salsa verde and house-made bread.

The restaurant offers a loggia inspired by the Amalfi coastline, where guests can comfortably enjoy alfresco dining and cocktails year round. Other dining areas include an intimate lounge and a dining room that overlooks an open kitchen with marble counters and gold accents.

The main menu boasts pasta dishes, including Rigatoni Bolognese with wild boar, ’nduja and Grana Padano; Pasta Ai Frutti Di Mare with stewed calamari, lobster and rock shrimp, spicy pomodoro and mint breadcrumbs; traditional pizzas with handmade dough; and entrees such as chicken Milanese with polenta and dandelion greens, stewed mussels with couscous and spring vegetables, and a stuffed whole fish.

Sunseeker Rosé The “Rosé Craze” is still going strong and shows no sign of slowing down. If you shop in any of my stores, you will notice an abundance of pink and blush-colored wines that adorn the shelves. My new favorite is Sunseeker Rosé, made with 95% freerun juice (the initial juice extracted from the grapes providing the highest quality fruit characteristics). Sunseeker Rosé is refreshing and thirst quenching with tons of red berry fruit and a bright, crisp finish. This is what I call the ultimate “Patio Pounder!”

This elegant sparkling wine from Bordeaux is crisp and effervescent with aromas of bright red fruit and subtle floral notes. The palate reveals delicate bubbles with flavors of strawberry, tart raspberry and pastry dough. The wine is light to medium bodied with balanced acidity and a soft, creamy texture. Amelia Brut Rosé can be enjoyed on its own or with a wide variety of foods. It is the perfect sparkler for all your summer gatherings.

Live Younger

LONGER Yo u r S t a t e o f M i n d i s Yo u r F o u n t a i n o f Yo u t h By Roselyn Poon

Aging is inevitable; however, old age is optional because it is personal. You can decide if you are old or simply of an age. Aging and old age affects all of us sooner or later; the trick is deferring old age. There is a world of difference between being a youthful, independent 80-year-old, and one who is forced to live a restricted life, dependent on others to get through the day. The good news is you can do something about your rate of aging; it does not involve spending money, getting a life coach or joining a gym.

Temporary state of mind: This is a transient state and can change constantly throughout the day. For example, you feel happy because you just watched an uplifting movie. However, on the way home someone cuts you off in traffic causing you to brake harshly and become agitated and annoyed with the world— instant state change within seconds. Transient states come and go throughout the day, but your core state of mind is with you 24/7. Know your core state of mind

The magic ingredient is your state of mind. Getting control of your state of mind, rather than it controlling you, is a conscious effort on your behalf. The precursor to resetting your inner clock and slowing down the aging process is to get a grip on the following: • Understanding the power of your state of mind • Knowing your core state of mind Understanding the power of your state of mind Your state of mind colors your experience of life, and heavily influences your point of view, your decisions and your actions. For example, if you believe you are too old to text, you will tell people you do not text, and when someone does text you, your frustration at not knowing what to do will confirm your belief that you are simply too old. Whereas the truth is that everyone has to learn how to use the latest technological tools. Your inability to text has nothing to do with age and everything to do with a growth mindset and a more forgiving state of mind. Give yourself a break. There are two fundamental states Core state of mind: This is your basic personality. You are a glass half full or half empty person. These are your core characteristics that filter and influence your experience of the world around you. Your core state of mind is shaped by your beliefs, and your beliefs are shaped by your experience of the world. If your family members live into their 90s, you will grow up believing that you too will be kicking around into your 90s. Your beliefs dictate your state of mind and subsequently your feelings and actions; because you believe you will live to a great age, you will maintain your enthusiasm for life over the years. That will result in living to become a great age. It is a wonderful positive self-fulfilling cycle.

40

Summer 2019 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

Most of us do not know what our core state of mind is, even though it determines if your everyday life is wonderful, difficult, sad, exciting or just plain dull. What is your core state of mind? Are you a “can-do” person or a “victim?” Are you the type of person who believes age is just a number and has no bearing on your life, or do you secretly cringe at every birthday and subconsciously change your state of being to match the textbook description of someone at that age? Do you regularly say, “I am too old for that!” or “It is never too late to give it a go?” All of your little habits and pet phrases give clues as to your core state of mind, which dictates your core state of being. How do you refer to yourself when speaking or thinking about yourself? If you have trouble working out what your core state is, try asking a good friend to describe you in their words; with the proviso that you will still be good friends afterwards. The point is that you need to understand your core beliefs about aging and old age, and appreciate the massive impact these beliefs have on your state of mind before you can start the process of pushing old age as far into the future as possible. You need to cultivate a more youthful state of mind. It is never too late to think about your future and decide if you like or do not like what is coming. The important point is to know that you can have input into your future and it starts with your state of mind.

Roselyn Poon is an author, speaker and motivator on all things to do with living younger, longer and extending our most productive phase of life well into what is commonly referred to as our twilight years. Her upcoming book, “Resetting Your Inner Clock,” is scheduled for release later this year.

THE GOODNESS

EXPERIENCE Part 2

Te l l a B e t t e r S t o r y – To d a y i s t h e Perfect Day to Begin a New Chapter By Janice Marie Wilson

The only way to have a better life is to write a better story. If you do not like the story you are telling, it is time to “gag the nag” (the Neurotic, Anxiety-ridden Grinch). Start that new chapter. Every day brings you a new world; holding onto thoughts from the past is an illusion. When you let go of your nagging thoughts, you see reality more clearly. You get to see G.O.D. (Graceful Orb of Divinity). You get to see nature, grace, truth and love, which are the constants in life. The NAG is a lie. The NAG will always lie to you; it will steal your happiness and muddle your brain. It makes you feel trapped like a victim—angry and afraid. If you are tired of arguing with yourself, fighting with others, feeling unhappy, lonely, afraid or discouraged, this is how you begin to tell a better story. Things are coming into your experience in response to your vibration. Your vibration reflects

your thinking. Feel good? You are vibrating good thoughts. You are reflecting your G.O.D. Feel bad? Your vibrations are the NAG. You get to pick what you think. Why would you want to feel bad when feeling good is so delicious? The answer is simple. You do not know any better. You are in the habit of believing that your life will become better if you listen to the NAG. You believe that negative thoughts will make you a more successful person. You take the story the NAG is telling as the truth. Look at the law of attraction: Like attracts like. This means that NAG thoughts attract unhappiness. G.O.D. thoughts attract happiness. Your mood and feelings affect how you respond to your reality. The way you feel is how you create the story you are telling. Feel G.O.D and your story is beautiful. Feel the NAG and the story turns ugly. To live your unique story, become aware of how you are feeling. Your story begins inside

of your awareness. That is why you have the power to tell a better story. Discover and surprise yourself by becoming aware of the wonderful G.O.D. thoughts you have. The easiest way to do this is to practice gratitude. Allow yourself to be grateful for the love you do have in your life. Allow yourself to see the beauty and goodness that surrounds you. Focus on the good in every moment, regardless of the turmoil that is going on in the world or your life. Tell yourself the story that will make you happy, even if you are making it up. Stay grounded in gratitude. Being grateful for who you are right now is a start for your new chapter. It is how you begin to live happily ever after. Base your life on the freshness of every moment. Gratitude connects you to the reality of the present moment. It takes away the false power that you have unconsciously surrendered to the NAG. Your authentic power is found in the presence of now, the G.O.D. The constants in life help create a happy story; they are the truth about you. The NAG is the lie. That is why it feels so awful to listen to it. It is not part of your nature—it is an illusion based on a belief about the past. There is not a flicker of love that lives in it. It is unruly, cantankerous and displeasing to you and everyone around you. Live your story, your authentic story. Gratitude opens the portal to receive the blessings bestowed by grace. Your story can change for the better instantaneously when grace is activated by gratitude. Gratitude places you in the goodness of now.

Your story can change. You will never be the same person that you were yesterday, today or tomorrow. Being grateful for who you are now brings you a sense of love and clarity at any time and place in your life. It is the ultimate well of renewal and growth. When you maintain a sense of appreciation for the present moment, your life story gets better and better. The better your story, the better you feel. Your life becomes more beautiful; you feel more worthy. You become more loving, creative and confident. You express the qualities of your true self, your G.O.D. in every moment. You experience goodness and begin to tell your unique story of living happily ever after. Happily ever after is the reason you are alive.

E xercise

Until next time …

Focus on the good you express to others and the world around you. The next time the NAG starts to do her number on you, you will have a treasure chest of protection against her NAG-i-tive barbs. Make a list of the qualities in others that you admire. Start working on finding those same attributes within yourself to be expressed in your own unique way. By appreciating diversity in one another, we find our own individual uniqueness and each piece fits like a puzzle bringing harmony to our world.

BRANDING 101 The Number One Mistake Most Entrepreneurs Make When Building Their Brands By Ali Craig

We live in the day and age of entrepreneurship. It seems we all know someone who is launching a product, starting a side hustle or playing all-in to live the dream. For the last 20 years, I have worked with brands from around the world, from the moms and pops to the Wall Street elite, and it does not matter where you come from, the numbers do not lie: 66 percent of all new businesses will not make it to their 10-year mark. Why is that? Because they missed the key foundational element their brands need to thrive and grow through the good and not-so-good times that any business will face: Themselves. Yes, you and your story matter so much more to your brand than the logistics of your offer. The number one mistake most entrepreneurs make when building their brand is forgetting to connect potential customers with that story.

Ye s , y o u a n d y o u r s t o r y m a t t e r s o much more to your brand than the l o g i s t i c s o f y o u r o f f e r.

y h w s ' e r e H SELLING LOGISTICS VS. COMMONALITY Everyone loves to talk about the logistics of their offer. How much of this or how fast that, but logistics do not sell. People view logistics after they are already sold on your brand as the logical justification to say “yes” and hire you or buy from your company.

The truth is that it is your story beyond all else that will have people connecting with you and in turn saying “yes” to your brand. And for you to effectively tell your story, you have to know you and most importantly your common red thread. In Neuro Human Branding principles, the common red thread is the core element that ties all of your loves, hobbies, jobs, instincts and education together. On many levels, when defined, this common red thread gives you your true motivation—your “why” in life. Your common red thread could be to help people see and experience beauty, to help people find balance on an internal, as well as external, level. Whatever your common red thread, it is always about serving others. Why does this matter? Because the reason you wanted to launch this brand started long

before you ever realized. I would dare say it started in your childhood, as it does for most of my clients.

This means the story this brand tells has your entire life’s backstory supporting it. The brand may be new, but the passion and commitment have been there for decades. It is that story that your audience can connect with and wants to know. It is that story that has people feeling like you understand them, care about them and are not just selling your brand. That is exactly what you want and need to create a thriving, loyal, and sharing audience in today’s “I will buy it on Amazon,” or “I will Google the answer” audience base. If you want your brand to succeed, you must sell the one thing those big guys do not have and that is heart. Your red thread on why your life has gone the way it has is full of heart, connection and dedication—everything that makes you “you” and everything that an audience truly wants from a brand—connection and commitment.

Dr.

a i r o t c i V Chen Mentoring and Motivating Starts at Home By Roselyn Poon, Photography by Scott Irving / TNG Models

Dr. Victoria Chen was born in Taiwan and experienced a traditional Chinese family environment while growing up, emphasizing education and family. Her professional credentials are exemplary. She graduated as the valedictorian from her dental class at National Yang-Ming University in Taipei, Taiwan, and obtained a DDS degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in Loma Linda, California, where she received the Clinic Excellence Award. She received a full scholarship to attend University of Illinois at Chicago to obtain her orthodontic specialty degree and a Master of Science in oral biology. She has continued to excel in her profession and is the only elite member of Excellence in Orthodontics Organization in Nevada and maintains an active membership in the American Dental Association, Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, Nevada Dental Society and Las Vegas Interdisciplinary Study Club. Dr. Chen has also appeared on television and radio shows including ABC’s KTNV “Morning Blend” and “Danny Vegas Show.” After researching Dr. Chen’s scholastic and professional history, it was both exciting and fascinating to meet the woman who maintains a top-shelf personal life while heading up a thriving dental specialist practice with four practices, is a loving “Caddie Mom,” an author of four books, and an award-winning community leader. Dr. Victoria Chen leaves the Energizer Bunny in the dust. When we met at the photo shoot for Las Vegas Woman magazine, I was expecting an imposing, serious woman who would fit very well in the military. I could not have been more wrong. Dr. Chen really is like a breath of fresh air. Her presence instantly brightens the room and, of course, she has that incredible million-dollar smile that comes from her heart and radiates warmth and happiness. Dr. Chen is obviously excited about life and helping others to see that they have the power to make their own lives just as wonderful.

Dr. Chen and Dr. Huang have published five books for their patients since 2015.

Her two daughters, Angelina and Cameron, were in hair and makeup, and very happy to see their mom. She came fully loaded with their golf clubs, golf attire and dressy shoes for their photos. After they exchanged hugs and kisses, it was my turn to speak with the acclaimed doctor. This lady is the queen of multitasking; fitting that our interview was conducted during her hair and makeup session. I started by asking the doctor what she loves about her life here in Las Vegas and she replied with, “Everything!” She explained that the level of activity in her community is inspiring and gives her endless opportunities to give back to a town and country that has given her and her family so much. Dr. Chen attributes her passion for motivating and mentoring others to her husband, Dr. Allen Huang. Dr. Huang is a wellrespected periodontist and dental implant surgeon with an extensive professional portfolio, and, amongst other things, he is a co-founder of Significance Dental Specialists with Dr. Chen. They both grew up in Taiwan; however, did not meet until they were residents at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the United States. Until meeting Dr. Huang, Dr. Chen was laser focused on developing her professional expertise and career. She had not considered becoming an entrepreneur prior to meeting her husband; however, it was not long before he opened her eyes and mind to the exciting opportunities the world had to offer them outside of their immediate space.

‘Dr. Victoria Chen is the quintessential renaissance Asian American woman. She uses her expertise in orthodontics to help the underserved in the Las Vegas Valley, gives lectures to dental professionals, runs four successful dental offices, while raising two talented scholastic golfers. She is simply an amazing woman everyone should aspire to be.’

--Dr. Phan Nguyen, DDS Dr. Huang opened his own practice just one year after graduating, and encouraged Dr. Chen to do the same. He encouraged her to expand her horizons and get involved with the community around her. Dr. Chen did not need too much convincing and opened her first practice in 2007. She quickly realized that the more she mixed with other entrepreneurs and people who loved helping others grow, the more her enthusiasm for the same grew, and what better place to start than at home. Dr. Chen is the proud mother of two daughters who are equally proud of their mom. In fact, they have voted her Best Caddie Mom several years in a row. Dr. Chen is not a “stage mom.” She is a true teacher in that she leads by example. She does not lecture or demand that her daughters follow suit. She shows them how to create a great life by helping them see what can be achieved by rising to challenges. She can see their potential and encourages them to take leaps, knowing full well that she will be there to catch them if needed.

The girls are exposed to her work life, her on-going professional and personal development and her community involvement. They see firsthand what can be achieved if one is willing to push outside of their comfort zone and get involved. Cameron, at the great age of 10, has already put her mother on notice regarding her practice. Cameron has declared that she is going to take over the family business and has insisted that her mother keep the practice until she is old enough to do so. When asked why she wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps, without hesitation Cameron replied, “Mom is always having fun at work and the money is great.” Cameron is not sitting around waiting until she can take over the reins of the family business. She is an accomplished golfer and currently ranked No. 1 in the Nevada girl’s 10 to 11 age group. On a more casual note, she loves her dogs, Joy and Strawberry, and having fun with her sister, Angelina. Angelina is 12 and holds the title of older sister. She is also an accomplished golfer and currently ranked top two in Nevada girl’s 12 age group. We briefly talked about school and she freely admits that it can be challenging at times, but overall it is fun, and she excels at school. She is very keen to do well and does not require reminding with her homework. During the interview, she was relaxed and thought about my questions before answering. She even asked me some questions about myself. In addition to golf and excelling at school, Angelina has been studying the piano, tennis, math and chess since she was 7 and has already given several recitals and tournaments. Dr. Chen is a great believer in learning by doing; consequently, the girls are already attending public speaking camps and giving presentations to their classmates. I took the opportunity to ask Cameron and Angelina if they had any advice that they would like to give other young girls. Cameron quickly said, “A beautiful smile trumps facial beauty every time.” Angelina took a few seconds to consider my request and then replied, “There is an issue, which I am not very good at but I am working on it, and that is to not care so much about what other people think of me or what I am doing.” I was pleasantly surprised. This young 12-year-old is working through something that many adults have not yet mastered. This young lady is already ahead of the curve. Dr. Chen is obviously doing a great job with these girls. Their level of sophisticated, clear thinking is well above their years, thanks to their loving mom. As Dr. Chen’s business expanded, so did her interaction with other successful business people. One such association was Dr. Dustin S. Burleson. Dr. Burleson is a speaker, teacher, author, orthodontic specialist and provides business training for other orthodontists. Dr. Chen wanted to learn more about business excellence and enrolled with Dr. Burleson. It was through this association that she connected with an organization called Smiles Change Lives, which pairs low-income children with orthodontists who want to help them. The program has treated more than 6,500 children since 1997.

Angelina (right) and Cameron (left) are the top ranked junior golfers in the United States.

Dr. Chen has published four books thus far, including: “Ignite Your Life,” coauthored with Brian Tracy; “The Ultimate Guide to Straighten Your Smile So You Can Look Fabulous - An Orthodontist Mom’s Secret Recipes for Using Braces & Invisalign”; “The Ultimate Guide to a Million Dollar Smile”; and “Who Said I Don’t Need Braces? The Secrets to Look Fabulous”...

Over the past few years Dr. Chen’s company has donated over 200,000 braces to the Las Vegas community. Earlier this year, Dr. Chen’s community efforts were acknowledged by the Miss Asia North America Organization (MANAO) when she was one of six women to receive the MANAO Women of Inspiration Award. Founded by Annie C. Evans and Dr. Alice Chen at Red Rock Kids Dental, MANAO’s mission is to inspire young women to follow the MANAO way: Motivate, Achieve, Navigate, Advocate and Own. Las Vegas proudly boasts a large community of women and MANAO is one of the many women’s community groups that work tirelessly to make this a wonderful, livable city for everyone. Dr. Chen believes that one of the greatest benefits of reaching out and working in her community is the opportunity to meet other like-minded people. She loves the meeting of the minds and the positive energy generated when enthusiasm meets enthusiasm. Subsequent to receiving her MANAO award, Dr. Chen is now actively involved with MANAO, Annie Evans and Dr. Alice Chen. There is no shortage of opportunities for Dr. Chen to make a positive difference in people’s lives. She loves inspiring people to use their potential. One example involves a young hygienist who was enrolled in Dr. Allen Huang’s Hygiene Study Club. Dr. Chen did a presentation about writing, which inspired the young hygienist’s desire to one day write a children’s book for her new baby. Dr. Chen encouraged her and provided information on the process of editing and publishing with an emphasis on the value of asking questions and asking for help. The young mother walked away with a twinkle in her eye and a bounce in her step, and at last report she is writing her book. You never know when the opportunity to change someone’s life will arise. Dr. Chen says you need to be out and giving back to your community to make a real difference. She also believes that motivating others to do things makes everything she does more worthwhile. Prior to interviewing Dr. Chen, I had to consult Google to find out exactly what an orthodontist is. Just in case you are not too clear either, an orthodontist is a specialized dentist who focuses on overbites, occlusions, over-crowded mouths, and misaligned teeth and jaws. In simplest terms, all orthodontists are dentists, but only the top 2 percent of dentists graduating from school are orthodontists. Dr. Chen is very keen for people to understand what orthodontics are and how specialists like herself can help people with their misaligned teeth. She feels that there is a lot of confusion about orthodontics and it is important to her that people are in a position to make well-informed decisions based on clear and concise facts.

Obviously, the girls are not responsible for definitions and technical explanations, though I have a suspicion they would give it a pretty good go, but rather expressing their opinions on the power and benefit of having a great smile in daily life. The Secrets to Look Fabulous” (Chinese edition 2018). Dr. Chen explains that the most important talent required to become a successful, published author is self-discipline. I have to agree that self-discipline is a key ingredient; however, passion about your topic is equally important, and this is another area where Dr. Chen excels. She is so passionate about helping people to be the best they can be that she cannot help but write and speak on self-development using every tool available to us. Long-time family friend, and fellow dentist, Dr. Phan Nguyen at Town & Country Dental introduced Dr. Chen to a community program called Serving Up Smiles. It is a free dental clinic for homeless and low-income Nevadans, established thanks to a partnership between The Salvation Army Southern Nevada and the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, a volunteer organization dedicated to medicine and education. Like Dr. Chen, Dr. Phan is very appreciative of his good fortune since moving to Las Vegas and takes every opportunity to give back to his new home. He actively recruits his dentist friends to donate a Sunday two to three times a year and provide free dental services to the program. The mission of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, guided by the four Buddhist principles of kindness, compassion, joy, and giving is a volunteer-led charitable organization that strives to ease suffering on earth by inspiring a worldwide network of volunteers to provide spiritual support and humanitarian services to all regardless of race, nationality or religion. "Dr. Victoria Chen is the quintessential renaissance Asian American woman. She uses her expertise in orthodontics to help the underserved in the Las Vegas Valley, gives lectures to dental professionals, runs four successful dental offices, while raising two talented scholastic golfers. She is simply an amazing woman everyone should aspire to be," says Dr. Phan Nguyen, DDS.

Dr. Chen is a confirmed doer and just being concerned about something is not good enough for her, so she is writing her next book titled “The Orthodontic Bible for Smart Parents.” Her aim is to answer questions regarding straightening our smiles and even some questions we did not know we had.

Every aspect of Dr. Chen’s life is powered by her enthusiasm, passion to help others reach their potential and create their own fabulous life. She motivates her staff by creating a fun working environment with themed weeks where everyone gets to go to work dressed in their favorite baseball team colors or pajamas; her patients to stay with her by giving them a lifetime guarantee on their orthodontic work; everyone in her community to roll their sleeves up and get involved. Most importantly, she motivates her daughters to be the best they can be at everything they do. Dr. Chen’s enthusiasm for growth and engagement is apparent and contagious to those whose lives she touches.

In keeping with mentoring at home, she has assigned Cameron and Angelina the task of writing their own chapters for inclusion in her new book. She wants her daughters to publish their very own books by the time they are 15, and feels that there is no time like the present to get started.

SLIDE INTO

THIS SUMMER

Ta k i n g C a r e o f Yo u r B o d y a n d M i n d By Dr. Tiger Devore

The summer season often gets us back in touch with our bodies. We see it more because warmer weather means fewer clothes. We feel it more because we tend to be more active. We criticize it more because we discover the things we want it to do, but that it does not always do, at least not as well as we might like it to. For those of you who are able-bodied, exercise is a great boon. Those who exercise tend to feel less depressed, as exercise may relieve depression. For couples who exercise together, they get the benefit of raised testosterone levels for about an hour after exercise. Along with hormonal increase comes an extra sense of sexual interest. Anyone who has made progress getting into shape knows the extra confidence that comes along with that new-found confidence: better sex does happen with greater physical confidence; less anxiety makes for better sexual response. For those of you who are less able-bodied, pursuing intimacy and having sex includes some concerns about overall physical health. Is your heart healthy enough for the exertion required for the kind of sex you want to have? If your heart feels like it is beating out of your chest after sex, it is very hard to catch your breath, or if you feel that laying down makes it harder to breathe than standing up, watching your heart health and consulting with your doctor about being healthy enough for sex is important. This is truly what the erectile dysfunction commercials mean when they warn about being healthy enough for sex. It may be that your sexual practices, just like your dance steps, may need to be less athletic than they once were to compensate for the changes that come along with aging.

Many medications can interfere with sex. Heart medications, antidepressants and prostate drugs all have been shown to get in the way of good sexual function. In men, this is about erectile dysfunction, and in women, it may be about decreased levels of arousal and orgasmic potential. Any medication or disease process that is associated with peripheral neuropathy (tingling or numbness in the extremities, usually hands and feet) can also cause decreased sensitivity in the genitals. This is true for people living with diabetes and also those who are treated with HIV medications. Anyone who has had radiation as part of cancer treatment, especially to the pelvic region, is also at risk for decreased sexual functioning. With all the health and wellness information in mind, where does the mind-body connection really speak to sex and intimacy? Romance, sexual excitement and interest, whether exaggerated and unrealistic or not, can fuel our desires, thus making it an encounter we will remember for the rest of our lives. Summer was made for romance, no matter what our age. What is happening between our ears; our thoughts and feelings, our fantasies, hopes and desires, can directly influence our experience of our bodies, especially in the feeling of our sexual experiences. Too often, people want to believe what they are feeling. Therefore, the love and intensity they felt must have been real or it would not have felt like that. New romance is not the love it seems, no matter how earth shattering a first encounter may have felt. As fun and “right” as new romance can feel, we have to remember that it is only fantasy; reality comes some time later.

THAN JUST A WATCHFUL EYE Water Safety Starts with Proper Education By Jennifer Florendo in conjunction with Infant Swimming Resource

Te a c h i n g c h i l d r e n t o j u m p i n t o a p o o l without the necessary survival skills is analogous to standing in the middle of a busy street and encouraging the child to run to you.

Most adults would give themselves a pat on the back for implementing a basic, multi-layer approach to water safety: you have a pool fence, pool alarm, swim vest and responsible supervision at all times, or so you may think. What many may not be aware of are the mixed messages that young children receive while in the pool with that floatation device and responsible adult. The messaging comes from showing young children that water is fun. From the loud splashing and laughing, the colorful dive toys and pool games, to the floaties and the ambiance, we create a setting of fun. And nothing bad ever happens when we are having fun, right? Wrong. For a toddler who has no survival skills, the water can be anything but fun. It can claim a life in mere seconds, regardless of how safe and supervised you may think the young children are. Often, adults can be seen standing in the pool, in water deep enough to cover the little one’s head and encouraging them to jump in … after all, this is fun, right? When encouraging the child to jump into the adult’s arms, they are learning that jumping into the pool is fun. What they are not learning is that jumping into the pool without an adult present can be deadly. At the end of the day, we often remind kids to never jump into a pool without an adult present. However, that message may not be fully understood, and the adult may not be aware that the child is outside and ready to go into the water. The proper tool here is to instruct the young child to never go into a pool without holding onto an adult’s hand. Let this sink in: Teaching children to jump into a pool without the necessary survival skills is analogous to standing in the middle of a busy street and encouraging

the child to run to you. What is stopping the child from doing it again, just without anyone around? Flotation devices give both parent and child a false sense of security. The device teaches them to maintain a vertical position in the water so that they can breathe. What they are naively learning is that this position is incompatible with safety and survival. Without wearing a floating device, a child will sink in that posture. Rather than teaching the fun of water first, children should learn proper survival skills and that the water can be a dangerous place. To start, babies as young as 6 months old can learn to roll over and float on their backs. Once children are of walking age, they can learn to swim, roll over onto their backs to breathe and to flip over again to find the edge of the pool. According to Infant Swimming Resource (ISR), as children grow their safety techniques change. Use this as a rule of thumb: Until the age of 6, schedule a refresher class each time you buy a bigger sized shoe for the child. Drowning is the number one cause of death for children ages 1 to 4, and it can happen in seconds. Please do not wait on swim lessons. IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU... Here, we share two real-life stories of parents who have experienced a child drowning. We share similar stories, with different outcomes, and show just how quickly the unthinkable can happen.

Kristyn and Chase’s Story I turned my back on my son while our 10-year-old was playing in the pool with her friend. He never showed any interest in the pool. We were out there every day and he only liked playing with his toys on the patio. My guard was totally down, until that day. I heard my daughter screaming for me. I ran to her. My son’s lifeless body in her hands. She said that he fell in the pool. I was thinking he fell and hit his head [on the ground]. The pool did not even cross my mind. He has never gone near it.

Nicole and Levi’s Story Last April, my husband asked, “What should we do about Levi and swim lessons?” Levi had just turned 3, and, as we talked, he ran around while tormenting his older sisters with a plastic tube turned into a sword. We both said, “He does not seem ready” and decided to wait until Levi turned 4. Six weeks later, I pulled his lifeless body out of a pool. He will never turn 4. Please enroll your toddler in the right swim lessons that focus on survival. Not all swim lessons are created equally.

It was 30 seconds; that is all it took to almost lose him. The guilt, what ifs and memories of that day have impacted me more days than not after this accident. Forgiving myself seems impossible.

I understand the hesitation around swim lessons. I used to be a typical mom of three kids, forced to weigh every decision on time, finances and my own parenting energy, which all seemed stretched too thin.

Chase just turned 3. He finished his survival self-rescue lessons in October of last year and just finished his refresher lesson in February.

Time? Let me tell you about time, about this lifetime without my son, about every bedtime kiss he will miss. You do not want this eternity of time that stretches before me.

I wish there was more awareness out there about drowning prevention. I wish people would not be scared off by the cost of lessons like we were when I first investigated them when he was a few months old.

Money? Many nonprofits offer scholarships. Exhaust every option; budget and beg. The cost of swim lessons is a fraction of the price of a funeral.

Kristyn, the daughter of Las Vegas Woman magazine publisher, Stephanie Kocher, is sharing this story to raise awareness of water safety.

Tears? Your child hates swim lessons, even though the instructor is gentle yet persistent? Well, crying means breathing. On the night my world ended, I only heard silence by the pool. I would have given my life to hear my son crying. Jonathan and Nicole Hughes lost their son the same day as the daughter of Olympic skier Bode Miller and his wife, Morgan, who tragically drowned in a backyard pool. There Is

NO WE IN YOUTUBE The Influence of the Internet o n Yo u r Q u a l i t y T i m e By Jennifer Battisti

The other day my 6-year-old daughter asked if we could buy a birthday present for baby Blake. I asked her, “Honey, who is baby Blake? Is it a friend at school’s younger sibling?” To which she replied, “No mommy, baby Blake, from the Shot of The Yeagers.” I felt the chilling sensation usually produced by a sci-fi movie. The Yeagers are a wholesome YouTube family I have allowed my kid to “subscribe” to. This evolution from television to prefabricated reality TV, felt, at first, inevitable. I monitored her usage and applied parental blocks. Even so, I began to notice a disturbing preoccupation with the pixelated parents and their five children who spend much of the show navigating box mazes and building living room ball pits. On more than one occasion, my daughter griped that our meager family of two never orchestrates carnival games in the kitchen. While investigating the effects of my daughter’s technology trance, I also had to (gulp) get really honest about my own digital dependency. On any given day, how many times had I checked my social media, my insurmountable email? How automatic was my scrolling? What was being sacrificed from the time spent engaged in these activities? And the most difficult question I had to ask myself: had I been mindful about the influence the internet has on our family? The solution, I think, is not to shield our children or ourselves from the use of technology. This sort of prohibition typically leads to a later infatuation with the “taboo” idea of whatever we were deprived of. The solution is balance and also conversations about what we value. If we let our children participate in the discussion about what we value, we might be surprised when they conclude that quality time together, board games, cooking meals, even stillness are activities that are important to their value system. The opposite of internet connection is

66

Summer 2019 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

old fashioned, “real life” connection and, I think, is also the antidote to the desire to check out of the present moment. When I asked myself what was beneath my incessant scrolling, following, downloading, it was usually one of two things—I was longing for something, a conversation with a friend, sunshine, affection, inclusion, or I was resisting something—boredom, sadness, loneliness. The goal is not to satisfy all of my cravings or avoid my feelings, the goal is just to know what I am made of, to be awake, and then I can meet myself with compassion. I can meet others with it. Sometimes that is enough to let go of the Googling, the checking, the posting, the striving. I can be an example for my daughter of what honoring feelings looks like. I think at the center of our desire for social media belonging is the basic human need to be seen and/or heard by others. If our kids are receiving the flesh and blood variety of human connection, they will be less likely to be captivated by the synthetic variety, and then technology will be an additional way we communicate, not a replacement for it. So when I asked my daughter what was important for our family, she said bike rides, yoga, and arts and crafts. Whoa, Fortnite did not make the list! We can check our phones later, really we can. We can be curious about our attachments, we can invite our kids to be curious about their attachments and we can talk about what we want to give our attention to. We may not be able to construct lava pits and slime wars in our living rooms, but we can create space for the moment-by-moment ordinary beauty of life with our children and ourselves, those moments for which no hashtag will ever measure up. Now this, I think, is the kind of idea worth subscribing to.

r. Cynthia Payne is a board-certified optometrist specializing in the treatment and management of ocular disease and owner of Trendsetter Eyewear. She enjoys working with people to improve their vision, assess the health of their eyes and treat eye disease. She also provides pre- and post- operative care for patients at LASIK of Nevada in Las Vegas and Reno. Motivated by the freedom optometry provides, from the ability to practice anywhere, choosing to be self-employed or work for another doctor full time or part time, to working in research and teaching; Dr. Payne loves having the choices that optometry offers to her. Dr. Payne has been practicing in private optometry since 1997 and opened Trendsetter Eyewear in 2011. She is a Distinguished Woman of Nevada member. Dr. Payne attended the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, where she earned her doctor of optometry. A graduate of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, she received a bachelor’s degree with a major

in biology and a minor in chemistry. She also completed one year of graduate study at the University of Tennessee, Memphis in neuroscience and worked for an additional two years as a research assistant in cancer pharmacology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. Dr. Payne provides routine eye exams and is skilled at diagnosing many ocular diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and others. She routinely treats diseases of the anterior segment and her extensive optometric experience enables her to fit and recommend all specialty designs of contact lenses, including hard-to-fit patients. One of the healthiest choices a person can make for their eyes is ultraviolet protection. Optometry is somewhat unique in that there is both an optical component and a health care component. In the optical field, some of the newest options are digitally designed eyeglass lenses (computer designed for optimized

vision) and more contact lens options that are healthier to wear (more oxygen transmission, stay cleaner, better for dryness). In the health care field, managing dry eye has become a major challenge. There are new technologies to help patients: artificial tears and eyelid oil gland treatments. There is also a new focus on counseling for nutritional practices and blink awareness to try decreasing dry eye symptoms. One of the healthiest choices a person can make for their eyes is ultraviolet protection. Ultraviolet increases the incidence of cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium and skin cancer. Choosing sunglasses or eyeglasses with UV protection helps decrease the risk of these diseases of the eye (and wrinkles). All the things that are good for the rest of the body also apply to the eyes; like not smoking, maintaining a balanced nutrition, and routine exercise. Genetic wellness testing can help someone eat foods that work with their DNA to optimize their health.

r. Laurie Bloch-Johnson has been practicing for over 30 years, creating a beautiful, natural smile for her patients as well as maintaining good dental health. According to Dr. Laurie, even small improvements can make a big difference in a smile, how someone feels about themselves and how others see them. There are no “typical” patients, as she treats teenagers to those over 80 years of age. Her patients come from all walks of life and come for a variety of reasons. “The shape of the tooth is just as important as the color,” she explained. “I look at the whole patient, including their face, color of their eyes, skin tone and even their personality.” It could be changing pointed teeth, dominant gums or even closing a small gap. It can make the difference in creating a beautiful smile. Dr. Laurie’s Exceptional Dentistry is a fullservice dental practice that includes full mouth reconstruction, dental implants, TMJ

disorder, including treatment for snoring, treatment for migraines, headaches caused from bite problems, veneers and periodontal laser management. Her practice offers smile design, smile makeover, dental facelifts, instant orthodontics, porcelain veneers, crowns inlays and onlays, tooth bonding, tooth-colored fillings, porcelain fillings, teeth whitening and gum contouring. She has worked with her master dental ceramist for almost 20 years, and he is available for custom shading and discussing the process with clients. Her practice mission is to see one patient at a time. The initial visit takes about 90 minutes, and Dr. Laurie spends about 45 minutes with each of her patients. Investing that much time and detail allows the patients to make sure that Dr. Laurie is the best possible fit. During the initial visit, there is an examination of the mouth, teeth, jaw joints (TMJ) and masticatory muscles. One of the many uses for the 42inch television in each exam room is that, as a camera takes photos of the mouth, the patient

Some of the different types of technology include digital X-rays, intra-oral cameras, computerized bite analysis and lasers for soft and hard tissue applications. Dr. Laurie is passionate about dentistry and absolutely loves her job. He feels that the ability to change people’s lives is an amazing and gratifying gift; it keeps him in the forefront of his field. He is constantly evaluating new treatments and offers the use of biologics such as stem cells, amniotic tissue and now exosomes to treat many chronic and acute problems. Acoustic wave therapy is also a great tool not many doctors offer currently, but it is readily available from Dr. Bregman. The use of peripheral nerve stimulators for chronic nerve pain in the legs and feet is another new and very exciting treatment available from the center. Other doctors often refer nerve patients to Dr. Bregman for treatment of their neuropathy

and nerve problems. Dr. Bregman prefers minimal incision surgery and non-surgical means whenever possible. Patients from all over the world seek him out for his expertise in the field of nerve problems. Fellow doctors from around the country, in the treatment and diagnosis of nerve problems, seek out Dr. Bregman for teaching opportunities, and he has become a leading expert in pediatric surgery including toe walking and flat feet. Dr. Bregman emphasizes the importance of connecting with a specialist when you are experiencing pain in your feet or legs and not to rely on your primary healthcare provider to treat the feet. He feels that while they are probably very smart, and great at what they do, they cannot possibly provide the same care as a good foot care specialist.

He also believes in open communication with his patients. If a patient emails him, they will hear back usually within hours, if not minutes. Dr. Bregman received his DPM from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in 1994, followed by a Cambridge Hospital/ Harvard-affiliated residency in 1996. His accomplishments and affiliations are extensive, including a past presidency of the Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons, member of APMA, ACFAS, AENS, Nevada State Podiatric Medical Society, and Pediatric and Trauma Fellowship training. r. Tiger Devore, columnist for Las Vegas Woman magazine about relationships, sex and gender issues, is a respected expert and caring physician. With over 25 years of practice and expertise, Dr. Tiger strives to help couples or individuals who are experiencing problems. This includes changes in daily living or just dissatisfaction with quality of life, going through transitions as they age, changing jobs, entering or leaving a relationship, going through separation or divorce, death of a partner and approaching dating after a loss. He also works with couples dealing with infidelity, whether to repair or leave the relationship. Often mistaken for a personal trainer rather than a clinical psychologist, Dr. Tiger is frequently asked for solicited advice. “Oh, I think we need to talk” is heard most when telling someone that he is a psychologist and sex therapist. Being a sex therapist comes with some misconceptions about what he does versus what he doesn’t do. “Sex therapists do not ever

sleep with their patients. Even though we do help with sex and relationship problems, we do not become personally involved with our patients in that kind of physical or emotional way. We do psychotherapy, which is just talk therapy,” Dr. Tiger explained. “Some patients have called the work with me ‘sexual finishing school’ where one gets the chance to learn everything they never got to learn about sex and find out where any problems they have with sex and relationships might have come from and work them out in the course of the therapy.” Dr. Tiger works closely with patients who have experienced a personal trauma to recover and let go of their unreal set of fears. “Too often a terrible thing that happened long ago can make it very hard, if not impossible, to enjoy something wonderful that is happening right now, because it reminds us of that old terrible thing in our history,” he said. “Real change in thinking can happen in relatively a few years; so many prejudices in psychotherapeutic theory and practice, especially in the field of sexuality, have become the stuff of foolishness in mainstream practice, even though you can

always find a practitioner who is holding onto old, debunked ideas.” He has worked in sex research clinics at both the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Human Sexuality program at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Tiger wrote a sex education program that was adopted by counseling center and health center staff at the university level nationally. Other areas he serves include the National Institutes of Health as a crisis counselor at its AIDS treatment and evaluation center at UCLA, incarcerated sex offenders, and has been an expert witness in court. Recently he worked with the Clark County School District, state legislature and various communities to implement programs for people who might not otherwise have access to services and help needed. “I love my work, and love seeing the people I work with live well. r. Paul Lanfranchi is the principal of The Lanfranchi Center, specializing in facial cosmetic surgery. Dr. Lanfranchi and Team TLC have been exclusively performing facial rejuvenation procedures for over a decade here in Las Vegas. Unlike most general plastic surgeons, they specialize and focus only on the face and neck. Having refined this facial subspecialization for many years, they have mastered the experience, delivery and outcomes for their patients. Dr. Lanfranchi prides himself in delivering the highest possible quality of care, partnership and results for their patients in the safest manner possible. Dr. Lanfranchi and his team of specialists have created a unique cosmetic surgery model to decrease the risk and cost of having authentic facial rejuvenating surgical procedures here in Las Vegas. They use local anesthesia, as compared to deeper sedation via an IV or general anesthesia, which they feel increases stress on your body and puts

it at risk for systemic, even sometimes fatal, complications, such as cardiac or pulmonary/ lung issues. According to Dr. Lanfranchi, their simplified, yet safer, process provides great results without unnecessary risks, allowing them to serve a larger demographic. Patients in their 70s, and even most with moderate medical histories such as smokers, diabetics and those with high blood pressure are often candidates. One of the most common questions people ask him is, “Will I still look like myself after the procedure?” Dr. Lanfranchi explained that after the healing period, most patients say that they look like a younger and refreshed version of themselves, and in 10 years of practice, they have never had a patient state that they did not look like themselves or looked “plastic” after having any procedures performed. The Lanfranchi Center does not chase trends because they eventually turn out to be either

dangerous or ineffective. Instead, they focus on timeless treatments that have stood the test of time and will still be the top procedures sought by patients 20 years from now. The primary services offered include full facelift for men and women, lower facelift and necklift, revision facelift, upper/lower eyelid lift, brow lift, chin and lip augmentation, facial fat transfer, neck liposculpting, and fractional CO2 laser. Dr. Lanfranchi was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in biology with honors from Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey, followed by Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Stratford, NJ. enter For Sight is a comprehensive ophthalmology center that treats patients of all ages for a variety of conditions and eye diseases. In 2013, Dr. Eva Liang and her husband, Anthony Ausband, opened the practice to deliver what they call “20/Happy” results. is a renowned pediatric ophthalmologist with a career spanning over 22 years. Before joining the practice, Dr. Selim was the pediatric ophthalmologist and chief of the ophthalmology division, Children’s Hospital Oakland, California. Dr. Selim loves working with children and is a pediatrician, as well as a pediatric ophthalmologist. Addressing patient’s concerns is of the utmost importance to both him and Center For Sight overall. Two of the most frequently asked questions he receives concerns strabismus, commonly referred to as eye misalignment or crossed eyed. Patients want to know if strabismus can be fixed, and will strabismus surgery help them to see better? The answer is yes to both! Dr. Selim explains, “Surgery can fix the appearance and functionality of strabismus in children and some adults. It seems 95 percent of adults are told that it cannot be fixed, but this is not always true. Within the last five years, there have been advances in surgical techniques for strabismus surgery. These new techniques are more effective for incomitant strabismus. In addition, we can do small incision surgery to correct small deviations in adults.”

The practice is comprised of the following doctors: Ophthalmologists Dr. Eva Liang, MD – Comprehensive Ophthalmologist with special interest in cataracts, cornea, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, oculoplastic including ptosis, blepharoplasty, entropions, ectropions, and lid lesions Dr. Jeff Hart, MD – Medical Ophthalmologist with special interest in Dry Eye Disease Dr. Jeylan El-Mansoury, MD – Comprehensive Ophthalmologist with special interest in neuro, pediatrics, cornea, oculoplastic surgery, and anterior segment surgery Dr. Michael Pernula, MD – Comprehensive Ophthalmologist with special interest in cataracts, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, pterygiums, and blepharoplasty Dr. Reed Jaussi, MD – Medical Ophthalmologist and Glaucoma Specialist Dr. Ruben Salinas, MD – Adult Medical Neuro Ophthalmologist Dr. Selim Koseoglu, MD – Pediatric Ophthalmologist Optometrists Dr. Adam Schwartz, OD – General Optometrist specializing in difficult contact lens fittings Dr. George Bouras, OD - General Optometrist Dr. Tina Licina, OD – General Optometrist

DR. ROOMAN AHAD C h i l d N e u r o l o g i s t w i t h t h e U N LV S c h o o l of Medicine Department of Pediatrics By Paul Harasim

In many ways, Rooman Ahad typifies a working mother with two young children. She gets the kids dressed for school, makes breakfast, packs their lunches and then drives her little ones to preschool or grade school before heading off to work. After work, she picks up the kids from after-school care and then proceeds to make dinner (her husband helps when he can). After dinner, she helps the oldest with homework, reads a book to the youngest, engages both children in creative play, shuttles them off to baths and settles them down for bed. “I’m a busy lady,” she says, grinning. “But I love my time with my family away from work. My husband’s time is not his own right now, because he is on call as a chief resident in adult neurology at Valley Hospital. If someone arrives at the hospital with a stroke or some other emergency where his specialty is needed, I have to deal with many things myself,” she explains. “When everything is going right, everything works. But if one of the kids is sick or the car breaks down, then I have to try to get a babysitter and rely on friends, and I am trying to keep my head above water. It really does take a village to raise a child.”

For me, it is not a job. It is a calling, something I very much want to do. Yes, Rooman Ahad’s life seems fairly typical for a working mom—until she morphs into her role as Dr. Rooman Ahad. Then, she is a child neurologist with the UNLV School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, the division head of child neurology and a physician who is responsible for providing medical care for children with many conditions, including; ADHD and Tourette’s syndrome, seizures and epilepsy; and developmental disorders such as cerebral palsy, sleep problems and autism. She is also an assistant professor of pediatric neurology, training future physicians and working on research that appears in the world’s most distinguished medical journals. “I also call my patients my kids,” Dr. Ahad says. “I love helping them. For me, it is not a job. It is a calling, something I very much want to do.” Pediatric neurologists devote their careers to the welfare of children, advancing their knowledge of the developing nervous system, perhaps the most complex biological system in nature.

The only board-certified child neurologist in the state of Nevada with supplemental clinical fellowship training, Dr. Ahad did her residency in child neurology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Studies show that the number of pediatric neurologists is at least 20 percent below what the U.S. needs. Dr. Ahad divides her time between the UNLV Medicine Ackerman Autism Center and the UNLV Medicine Pediatrics Center. “I would like to see more multidisciplinary clinics like that at the Ackerman Center,” she says, “where children with disabilities can be evaluated by multiple clinicians at one time and the clinicians can come together to create a treatment plan. I think taking a multidisciplinary approach is the gold standard for the best way to treat children.”

ON TARGET The Jaguar F-Pace There is nothing more fun than a road trip, especially when you find yourself driving the 2019 Jaguar F-Pace. The new F-Pace is Jaguar’s first sport utility vehicle and out of the gate, it hit the target. With styling cues from the F-type sports car, which includes similar signature headlights, cat-like rear haunches and a sleek leather-wrapped interior, its sporty driving performance will not disappoint. The seats are plush, the ride is quiet and smooth and the steering is spot on, which makes this an excellent choice for long-term driving excursions. All-wheel drive is standard for when the weather does not cooperate. The new Jaguar F-Pace offers 13 different trim levels and multiple engine choices, from a thrifty and full-of-torque diesel to a 550-horsepower Land Rover SVR derivative. Even with all of this performance and luxury, the Jaguar F-Pace does not miss out on practicality. With nearly 34 cubic feet of rear storage space and almost 64 cubic feet in total, you can load up three of your closest friends for the journey, without worrying about luggage space. Anyone up for golf? The Jaguar F-Pace starts at $45,795. For more information on the F-Pace and other vehicles, go to jlrlv.com.

The Power OF INTERACTION Daily Doses of Social Connection Keep Humans and Businesses Healthy By Dallyce Brisbin

Did you know that social connection with colleagues and clients is good medicine for our bodies and our businesses? While an apple a day definitely has merits for keeping the doctor away, research shows that positive social engagement also has a powerful effect on our immune systems. Humans are social creatures by nature. Most people typically associate the term “social” as referring to their relationships with family and friends outside of work. But what about the importance of social interaction in the workplace? The value of this is often overlooked, and sometimes even frowned upon by employers. However, if you consider that over the course of a lifetime the average person will spend 90,000 hours at work, it makes sense to cultivate business environments that foster positive social connection. This can have a significant effect on the overall well-being of

the staff, vendors and customers, which also impacts the company’s financial bottom line. There is an accounting theory called triple bottom line for companies who want to measure and grow their overarching impact beyond just their monetary bottom line. It focuses on what is referred to as the 3Ps: people, planet and profit. It is embraced by businesses that recognize that health and longevity are determined by a web of interdependent components, and requires them to consider the impact of their decisions on the people and the planet while they grow their profitability. They understand that the healthier their people and communities are, the better opportunity they have to thrive as a business. They recognize that they are part of an ecosystem and do not operate independently from the world around them. People are the lifeblood of business; this includes employees, owners, vendors,

customers and community members. When people feel valued, respected, included and supported, they tend to respond by becoming engaged, inspired, active and loyal. Studies show that happy employees tend to be more effective at their jobs and healthier overall, which means they are less likely to call in sick. Joy and happiness can spread through an office just as easily as a flu virus, and feeling socially connected has been proven to boost your immune system, which actually makes you less likely to catch the flu. No business can survive, let alone thrive, without vendors and customers. The social interaction between a business and its customers is another connection point that can have a significant impact on someone’s well-being and create a ripple effect of positivity. When serving a customer, we never know when we might be the only light in someone’s day. For example, when a senior talks a little too long at the register, remember you may be their three minutes of social connection out of an entire day. Enjoy the opportunity to connect with them rather than resist it. When someone is cranky or complaining, they may be frustrated with something that did not go as expected or something else in life. By responding to challenging people with respect and kindness, a sincere effort to find a fair resolution is often all that is needed to disarm the upset. Many times people just want to be seen, heard or acknowledged with honor and respect, rather than dismissed. Vendors also love to work with businesses that make doing business fun and exciting. As fellow business owners, we often tie our reputations and our financial stability together. The stronger our relationship connection, the more likely we are to have flexibility with each other when things do not go as planned. You can also foster positive social connections as a customer. It is fun to be the customer who people love to see and love to serve when you use or visit their business. You never know

...the average person will spend 90,000 hours at work, it makes sense to cultivate business environments that foster positive social connection.

the ripple effect you can create by smiling, making eye contact, stopping your busyness for even a few seconds to actually be present with the person in front of you, whether that person is a colleague, a customer or the owner or an employee of a business you are patronizing. Businesses are also community members. Communities tend to come together in times of celebration and times of sorrow and businesses keep the lifeblood of the community flowing every day. Participating in municipal events and supporting local causes is an important way for businesses to foster positive social engagement. The more inclusive and connected a community feels, the healthier it becomes across the board. Look for ways to be more inclusive and embrace opportunities to mix things up from your daily routine. Grab lunch with someone different, welcome a new coworker and help them feel included, or coordinate a fun team building outing. Ultimately, it is our presence that is the greatest gift we can give. The golden rule “treat others the way you wish to be treated” is just as important in business as it is in life. We generate and foster goodwill by honoring others, even if we do not feel we have much in common or we find them pushing our buttons. Business environments can be a great place to practice different ways to be fully present with people, and efficient with your time and mindful of your ability to influence the health and well-being of those you interact with every day at home and at work.

ESCAPE Story and Photography By Garrett Winslow

With over 40 million visitors per year, it is no secret that Las Vegas has much to offer. However, many tourists and locals alike might not be aware of the hub Las Vegas is for outstanding road trips.

Duck Creek, UT

Southern Utah

Outside of the famed Las Vegas Strip and the Fremont Street Experience, many are not aware there is another side to our city: A side that inspires adventure. Within a short drive of the Las Vegas Strip, there are numerous remarkable places to visit. Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire and Mount Charleston are some of the more widely known locales. However, are you aware the Desert National Wildlife Refuge is the largest in the lower 48 states and only 30 miles from the Fremont Street Experience? Or the Techatticup Mine in Nelson, Nevada is only 45 miles from the new Raiders Stadium? This mine was the largest gold mine in the Colorado Mining District and offers daily tours. Surprisingly, many locals are not even aware of the magic that lives outside of our beloved valley. Well within a short three- or four-hour drive, this region is bursting at the seams with cool places to go … yes, the pun was intended … Here is some

Grand Canyon, AZ

inspiration for you to grab a hold of your adventurous spirit and take a road trip. Crank up the stereo and head north for the hills Going north out of Las Vegas, we reach southern Utah. Within a short two-hour drive you will be in the beautiful mountains teeming with tall, green pines, and the requisite mountain lakes and streams. Just a few of the locations to explore are Cedar City and the surrounding mountains. There’s Duck Creek Village, Aspen Mirror Lake, Navajo Lake, and Cedar Breaks National Monument. A little closer and also beautiful is Pine Valley, Utah. Heading east Just a 3 ½ hour drive east, you will find Williams, Arizona. It is right on the famous Route 66 and the gateway to the Grand Canyon. Surrounding Williams is also Sedona and Sycamore Canyon. Right outside of Flagstaff is Grand Falls, a waterfall that is taller than Niagara Falls at 187 feet. Also in Flagstaff, you can visit the Lowell Observatory. The drive times to Duck Creek Village, Utah and Williams, Arizona are the same and both locations offer the cooler mountain air and affordable lodging. To the south South of Las Vegas we have Lake Havasu, a mecca for water sports and home of the London Bridge. Out west West of Las Vegas, we have the beaches of southern California, which is about three to four hours of a drive. Malibu, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach and Crystal Cove are just a few of the must-see locations. Whether it is the mountains or the beaches that tickle your fancy, one thing is certain: Living in Las Vegas offers far more than meets the eye.

S i m p l e W a y s t o K e e p Yo u r F i t n e s s o n Tr a c k T h i s S u m m e r By Megan Buckley

Here are five easy ways to stay on track this summer:

stick to fitness goals if they do it with a friend. Not only is the experience much more enjoyable, but it can also work as a great way to be held accountable. When you are not quite feeling like going to the early class, you know your tribe will be checking to make sure you are up and ready to go. This is also another great way to bond and build stronger relationships. Now what about those kids who are out of school …

1 Build a new daily routine. If your hours change at work during this time or your kids are now out of school, your normal routine is disrupted. Instead of using it as an excuse, use it to create a new routine. Determine what days and times work best for you to get to that class you love or complete an at-home workout. Write it down on a calendar, put it in your phone and set multiple alerts if you have to. This takes us into our next tip …

4 Engage in activities with your kids. Whether it is swimming in the pool, jumping on the trampoline or going for an early morning bike ride, there are many options to stay active and incorporate the whole family. Not only are you leading by example, but you are also doing something fun with them and those are memories you all will cherish. When was the last time you played some water volleyball? Who cares, you just burned 200 calories and showed your kids that you still got it.

2 Schedule a gym date with yourself. If you do not like it when your spouse or friends cancel on you, why would you do it to yourself? Self-care is a must for overall health and well-being. It is not selfish to take a little “me” time; if anything, it is a necessity. You would not expect your car to continue running on low gas or fumes forever, right? Same goes for you. Sweat it out and reset to refresh the system. If going solo to the gym is not your thing …

5 Plan ahead for events. Summertime means pool parties and barbecues, which also means temptation; over indulging on extra beverages or unhealthy finger foods is easy. To avoid giving in too much, have a small healthy meal before you go so you are not as hungry or offer to bring a fruit and veggie platter to the potluck.

Resolutions, what resolutions? By the time summer comes around, it is easy to forget what goals and resolutions we set for ourselves just a few short months ago. Between the heat, the kids being off school and daily motivation simply beginning to wane, it is easy to slack off.

3 Find—or grow—your fit tribe. Many studies have shown that people are more likely to

Whether your summer is a free-for-all, you stay on your routine like glue or you are somewhere in between, remember to give yourself some grace … you can always start again tomorrow.
