LETTER FROM THE
publisher Welcome to the winter issue of Las Vegas Woman magazine. This issue celebrates the year we’ve had and excitedly welcomes the year ahead. In looking back on 2018, some words come to mind: change, motivation, fear, success, failure and leadership to name a few. All of those words have had a big part in the articles we featured this year. It was not only a year of tremendous growth, but also a year of challenges. One of the things that keeps me going is being able to connect with our community and our readers. The hope that our articles resonate with someone and can motivate or inspire them, knowing that our events can help people network and make connections that they otherwise would not have been able to make; that is what motivates me each day. Being able to have a voice and a platform to bring people together is a powerful tool, one that I do not take lightly. The articles in this edition of Las Vegas Woman magazine will guide you as you celebrate this season. From our annual gift guide featuring novelties, beauty and organization to our spirited cocktails and seasonal wines. There are articles that will motivate you when it comes to your career, your closet and your intentions for the upcoming year. There are articles that inspire, including our cover feature on Virginia Toalepai, who pursued her dreams, despite having odds stacked against her.

Thank you for allowing us to lead, motivate and celebrate you ... one issue at a time. Gratefully,

LETTER FROM THE
managing editor At the beginning of each year, I give myself a word to focus on, sort of like a mantra. In the past I’ve used “focus,” “joy” and this year I used the word “no.” Saying no meant that I would stop saying yes to things that would overwhelm me, things that did not fill my cup or bring me joy. It also meant I probably offended or upset people during the year, but I held true to my “no” and used the word frequently. I still overwhelmed myself, but it was with things that I wanted to do and things I felt obligated to do. As we head into 2019, I am thinking about what my new word will be. Should it be “focus” again, so that I remember to focus on myself, which isn’t easy when you are a mom, a wife and have a job. Or should it be “growth” so that I remember to set goals and take the steps necessary to achieve them? What about “accountable” to ensure that I stay true to what I say I am going to do? This issue is packed full of articles dedicated to wrapping up the year successfully and positively. From the dressing for success tips to the business trends to watch in 2019 to the strategies that can increase your career marketability to vision boards, we have the stories you need to finish 2018 strongly and go into 2019 confidently.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL Committed to Making a Difference in the Lives of S o u t h e r n N e v a d a ’s Te e n s Jorge. Jasmine and Lin. Robbyosha. Cody. Dana. To some, these may just be names, but to the nine agencies funded by United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council (WLC), these are success stories. These are real people who started on the path to a better life through the community’s support and the efforts of this dedicated group of women.
Jorge
These individuals are only six of the thousands of lives changed by the partners receiving funding through WLC’s investment of $543,114 in 2017. The nine funded agencies were the first organizations selected to support United Way’s CommunityBased Agenda, focusing on education, student success, postsecondary attainment and workforce support. “We saw this as an opportunity to lead the charge in moving the cradle-to-career framework forward,” said Rebecca Howell, chair of the WLC project funding committee. “We laid the groundwork to solve some of our community’s biggest problems with these partners, and we’re proud to celebrate their impact.” In early education, members selected Spread the Word Nevada and their Leaders for Literacy program at Taylor Elementary School. Over the year, 806 families reported reading together daily, providing a strong foundation to increase the proportion of third graders reading at grade level. When selecting partners in student success, the project funding committee chose organizations committed to raising the high school graduation rate in Southern Nevada. Four selected agencies helped 2,486 students across the community get back on track to graduate in just one year. To help students reach graduation day, Chicanos Por La Causa, Communities in Schools Nevada, Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada and the UNLV Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach offered credit retrieval, transcript reviews and tutoring in local schools. These agencies also worked to prepare 4,814 students for life after high school with financial aid workshops and college and career readiness classes during the 2017-18 school year.
WLC members are continuing this momentum and empowering the next generation of female leaders by helping young women pursuing college degrees. Through a partnership with the Public Education Foundation, six women were awarded the Emerging Leadership Award for Women scholarship. “The WLC members are proud to support these young women who are changing our community for the better,” said Howell. “This year was especially inspiring, as we saw our very first recipient graduate and receive her degree.” Members also supported alternate paths to careers with their investment in Tech Impact. Through the IT Works and CX Works programs, Tech Impact helped 66 young adults gain IT certifications and customer service experience, empowering them to build a career. With WLC’s support, 4,268 adults in Southern Nevada found careers as well. Goodwill of Southern Nevada and Foundation for an Independent Tomorrow (FIT) helped individuals build customized career paths and empowered people into jobs that paid enough to support their families without public assistance. United Way plans to continue this success through 2021. Girls on the Run Las Vegas, FIT, Fulfillment Fund Las Vegas, Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Foundation, Leaders in Training, Nevada Health Centers and Sunrise Children’s Foundation were awarded $1,000,000 over three years to grow their impact and solve the community’s complex problems. WLC members and the partner agencies will celebrate the incredible work they’ve accomplished, and the thousands of lives changed at the Women’s Leadership Council Luncheon Fashion Show on March 1, 2019. Join in the celebration at uwsn.org/wlcluncheon.

Seeds to
HAPPINESS Life is a Balance of Holding On and Letting Go
By Ava Mucikyan “You only lose what you cling to.” -Buddha
Sometimes the changes one fears are the changes they need the most. Sure, growth is uncomfortable and painful, but nothing can be more painful than the feeling of being stuck. As you grow up, you realize certain weight needs to be left behind for the journey to get lighter. Most of us are master overthinkers. It is easy to get caught up in our own heads and start to overthink life. Generally, it’s because you have unhealed parts of your soul that have been triggered. The best thing you can do in these situations is to let go. Easier said than done? Of course it is, but it helps to understand that, at that particular low vibration, you are not in the position of healthy judgement. It is best to not attach labels to the situation. Holding on to pain or hurting someone else will not fix the situation. Wishing things were different will not change anything. When you let go, you don’t necessarily forget, you just let it be. As gracefully as you can, with much compassion, just let it be. Every time a thought arises, don’t get involved in the drama of the mind, don’t give it the satisfaction of overthinking; it will drain you without any resolution. Just like a nagging friend, listen to it, tell it that you won’t be participating in that conversation and let go. Here are a few tips on how to let go: Consciously DECIDE to let things go! Make a conscious decision that the painful memory doesn’t serve you any good and it’s time to let it go.
Give yourself permission to feel the sadness, anger, frustration, or whatever feeling you might have fully and completely. Denying yourself the satisfaction to feel will carry on unhealed emotion longer. So, if you are going to be sad, be really sad for a little bit. That will allow you to heal a lot faster than suppressing the emotion. Practice daily gratitude. Make a list of everything you are grateful for and add to it daily. Change your scenery; travel somewhere, it will help change your perspective. Love yourself completely. Forgive yourself for the past. Be compassionate with yourself and mindful of your self-talk. Be gentle, after all you are doing your best. Work with what you realistically have. Identify your present situation (emotional, financial, physical) and make a list of things you can work with NOW. Try not to give in to painful memories or guilt of the past. Other techniques for letting go include emotional clearings, energy healings, affirmations and meditation. Don’t take life too seriously, and don’t attach yourself to people or things: they don’t define you! After all, you can either grieve what you lost, or you can be happy to be given the opportunity to experience life. Remain open to change, be flexible not to break and enjoy this beautiful journey.
The Hemline
IS THE BOTTOM LINE Five Fashion Statements for Success By Janice Marie Wilson, MA
First Impressions Are Lasting It takes seven seconds to make a first impression and a lifetime to reverse it. What are you saying about yourself in the first seven seconds you meet someone? Fashion can instantaneously communicate intelligence, sincerity, trust, success, creativity, empowerment and values. What you wear can enhance your value in the workplace or detract from it. Ever wonder why some people feel more approachable than others? Why someone else closes more business transactions than you? Why you were passed over for that last promotion? It’s not always hard work that brings the success you desire. Take a good look in the mirror. Does your reflection give you a feeling of trust and confidence? If you met someone for the first time looking like you do right now, would you hire, befriend or ignore them? Would you trust them with your time and money? Find success in seven seconds. It’s that simple.

Fashion Boosts Creativity If you are feeling stuck, have an insurmountable problem, or are just plain bored, fashion can help you feel creative and smart. Look in your closet and find the one dress that makes you feel invincible. Find a color that exudes confidence. Apply the shade of lipstick that says, “I know what I am talking about!” Pick out a pair of shoes that will move you forward past any self-doubt. Create a fashion look that shows, “I know who I am and what I want.” If you can’t find anything in your closet, then follow this adage: When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping! That will get your juices flowing.
Fashion Makes You Feel Good “No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, show up and never give up!” Liz Taylor Fashion can give you the boldness to never give up. Dress your best and you can feel unstoppable. Woody Allen said 80 percent of success is showing up. Being fashionable gives you the courage to show up; it empowers inspiration. Shopping for your favorite fashions releases endorphins. When you feel good, you look good. Isn’t that what it’s all about?
No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, show up and never give up! - Liz Taylor Style via Fashion Accentuates Success Fashion is linked to fame, money and success. How you carry yourself, what style you follow or what fashion brands you choose tells a lot about you. A simple black dress can close a multimilliondollar deal. The perfect silhouette can make him fall in love. Yoga pants and a new pair of running shoes can encourage well-being. Happiness can be found in a faded pair of denim jeans. Fashion creates a lifestyle. It reflects what success means to you. A shopping spree may be all you need.
Fashion Leads to Self-actualization Fashion is an adventure. It is the pathway for expansion. It creates growth and purpose. People who realize selfactualization make their own decisions. They change their mind, make mistakes, create new choices and follow their bliss.
Become your own fashion statement and watch your net worth skyrocket.

Bored of me
PROJECT Part Four By Meghan Bailey
Earlier in the year, I went to a Vegas Golden Knights hockey game with my husband and 4-year-old son. We were cheering and enjoying everything a VGK game has to offer, but I also remember not knowing exactly what was going on. I didn’t know the rules or why the whistle would blow randomly. My family left for a snack run, and with the game on break, I leaned over to the person sitting next to me. He looked knowledgeable, so I decided to ask him what just happened because I did not know. Little did I know at the time, but that simple question to a random stranger would end up being a big part of my transformation, and not just as a hockey fan. One year ago, I woke up realizing that my life was no longer a life that brought me joy. A life that seemed pretty on the outside, but inside, I was begging myself to make a change. I embarked on a project that first began as a checklist of new things that I wanted to do. A spontaneous trip, new creative projects and foods to try; but this project would become more about searching for my soul again. Since the start, I challenged myself every day to do something I would not ordinarily do. Whether I ate something different, read about something new to me, talked to a stranger or took a new route to work. While doing something new every day was a good start to the challenge, it never felt like enough. I needed to find the one thing that would bring out the passion for life I once had. It wasn’t until mid-March that the stars would align, and that passion would start to unveil itself. My company had entered a Corporate Challenge and one of the categories was corporate ninja, a mild take on the TV show, “American Ninja Warrior.” I decided to go to a training session with some of my colleagues. After the session, a friend of the same random stranger I talked to at the hockey game was there and invited me to try some obstacles, which I was able to complete. That is when a piece of the passion I was missing came back. Since then, I have been regularly training obstacles and rock climbing. I’ve always loved athletics, but as you get older your options are slim. To be able to find something I could use my previous athletic background on was a breath of fresh air. As I moved into the summer months, I had my fair share of challenges. I would slip back into what I knew to be comfortable. It was the unwavering support and listening ear of my husband, Wes, who would help me figure out what I needed to do to

ensure I could continue to grow and achieve the goal I set at the beginning of the year. We both knew what needed to happen next; but knowing this part focused around my whole existence for the past seven years and it made it more difficult. I’ve always been someone who places self-worth in all the wrong places, not seeing myself for who I am versus what I do. For the past seven years, I had become Meghan, Director of Marketing. But, my job was no longer fulfilling and challenging me to become more and do better. I knew in my heart of hearts that it was time to leave and embrace the world looking for something new. At the end of August, I said my goodbyes and left behind the identity that I had known for seven years. After the hard choices were made, I felt a sense of relief and guilt. The relief came from being able to finally feel that I was breaking down the barriers that were keeping me on autopilot and the guilt that I was somehow letting someone down. It took a couple of weeks for me to understand that the only person I’ve been letting down was myself, and it was time to take steps to change the way I thought. With the magazine on deadline, I still had two months left of my project, but I don’t think this project is ever meant to end. This project was created to help me turn off autopilot, but now it has become so much more. It was about embracing changes in the trajectory of life. Take a chance, make things different, and see where life takes you. Remember that question to the hockey guy? The conversation introduced me to people who have become good friends, one of whom introduced me to the sport I now love and train regularly, and in a roundabout way has strengthened my family bond. To sum up what has been a long year, here is what I’ve learned: First: You can lean on people, but you have to rely on yourself. You must listen to your inner voice and act upon the things that feel right. Second: Good things happen, bad things happen, but the reaction and feeling are yours alone to experience. I’ve had plenty of successes and a lot of failures this year and the one thing I learned was that it was okay to not get too high or too low.
Finally: Not everyone or everything in your life has to play a big part. A coffee with your neighbor doesn’t have to be fostered into more, a pickup kickball game doesn’t have to turn into forming a team for a league. Sometimes you need sprinkles of change that last for that time and place only. Find your passion, live your life and love the people you surround yourself with. A few words of thanks... Taking just a moment to thank those who helped shape my year of growth. To my ninja family, thank you for doing awful, but amazing obstacle challenges with me and sharing your knowledge. To my game night crew, you are one of the gifts I received through this project, thank you for being 100 percent authentic. To my best friends, Brit and Kenna, you are everything to me and I am lost without you guys. To my host daughter, Filippa, you came into my life at the right time and remind me every day that life is about adventure. To my son, Logan, you are my heart and soul; the reason I started this project. I only hope to continue to make you proud. Lastly, to my husband, Wes, you are my best friend, partner in crime and the reason I make it through each day. I am lucky to have you, cheers to forever. Winter 2018-19 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

Phantom Chardonnay
An annual favorite that arrives during the cooler months, but usually disappears by summertime. This distinctive red blend combines petite sirah, zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Intense aromas of wild berries and black pepper lead to a concentrated palate of jammy fruit, mocha, cloves and toasted oak. The finish seems to last forever; but once the bottle is open, it always disappears quickly. Stock up now before it’s gone.

Phantom Red Blend
LIBATIONS |
While winter is typically the season for hearty red wines, there are plenty of full-bodied whites that are well suited for this time of year. Phantom Chardonnay, the newest line extension from the popular Phantom Red Blend, has aromas of toasty oak, baked apple pie and spiced pear. The palate is rich and velvety with flavors of caramel apple, crème brûlée, buttery notes and spicy oak. Anyone who likes big, oaky, buttery chardonnays; this wine is for you. Pair with lobster bisque, chicken pot pie, crab cakes, or macaroni and cheese.
The highly anticipated wine from Dave Phinney has arrived. The name represents the eight-year hiatus he took from making zinfandel when he sold his popular brand, “The Prisoner.” Now free to produce a zinfandel blend under the Orin Swift label, Phinney pays homage to his “time in the desert” with this incredible wine. Aromas of wild raspberry, fig and peppercorn are followed by lush flavors of blackberry, dark chocolate, hints of earth and espresso bean. The finish is bold with chewy tannins, dense fruit and complex layers. It’s been a long eight years, but definitely worth the wait.
Apothic Inferno This limited release red blend from Apothic is always a favorite this time of year. Inferno is aged four to six months in oak before spending an additional 60 days in whiskey barrels. The result is a truly unique wine, revealing layers of dark berry fruit, toffee, spice and smoky maple notes. Apothic Inferno offers bold flavors, rich character and a long smooth finish. It may be cold outside, but this fiery red is guaranteed to keep you warm.

S A M B A L AT T E Since 2010, Sambalatte has been changing the way Las Vegas savors coffee. Owner Luiz Oliveira prides himself on delivering more than a cup of coffee; Sambalatte is an experience. “We focus on the ambiance, consistent quality and education. We build relationships with our producers in Brazil, where I personally visit annually, and are continuously educating ourselves in the industry,” said Oliveira.

With the “farm-to-cup” approach to coffee, Oliveira chooses only the best quality beans and the local artisan blends and roasts weekly to deliver an unforgettable cup of coffee. Specialties include Balaproof coffee, Sambalatte’s take on the Bulletproof coffee craze; Samba Xen, an organic matcha cocoa drink; their new cold brew bottled to go, Samba Rock; and seasonal delights, including a butterscotch gingerbread drink.

Other menu items include various tea drinks steeped from the highest quality loose leaf teas and food offerings from breakfast sandwiches, pastries, salads, desserts and snacks. Sambalatte now has four locations, including the newly-opened Sambalatte at The Smith Center, which will remain open late on show evenings. The décor for this location mimics the lifecycle of a coffee bean; greens, reds and rich espresso. The walls are adorned in reclaimed wood and a coffee belt mosaic tile map, which took over 200 hours to complete. Afternoons will feature a high tea experience, with reservations being required. DESERT WIND COFFEE ROASTERS Desert Wind Coffee Roasters was founded to provide fresh, locally roasted coffee to caffeine fiends and businesses in the Las Vegas Valley. “The Stove is a restaurant for family, friends and new beginnings. A place for families to enjoy good food and conversation. As you move through the restaurant, your eyes are drawn to old cookbooks and memorabilia that take you back in time. The Stove brings back memories of sitting in grandma’s kitchen looking at her teapots with the faint aromas of the home-cooked meal lingering in the background,” said Chef Nunez. “Between the calming tones and the bright greenery of the restaurant, we tried to recreate that feeling of home. “Together, Scott and I have looked to the culinary inspirations of our childhood combined with present-day to inspire our dishes.” Here you’ll find quirky and eclectic décor, including vintage photos and knickknacks donated by both employees and guests. This has allowed the regular clientele to leave a piece of themselves in a space they can call home. Now instead of guests, they are a part of the continuously growing The Stove family. Reservations are offered 24 hours in advance and suggested highly for the weekends. The main dining room is seated on a first-come-first-serve basis. Portrait
OF A DANCER
Strength, Dedication and Determination Lead to Success f o r O n e L o c a l Yo u n g Wo m a n By Garrett Winslow
Alehssia “Coco” Reinhart is an aspiring ballerina who has been dancing since the age of 2. She is now 12 years old and also a mathematician and self-proclaimed logic geek. Many would say that mathematics and dance don’t mix, but Coco would be quick to argue that; both fields require perfection, and both fields require intense study. Her family jokes that math is her first language and English is her second. Every single day, Coco’s commitment starts early, with school from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. However, there’s a twist. Coco is home schooled by her mother, Vanessa. The Reinhart family wanted to have a bigger say in their children’s education and found that the classical Christian model of teaching was the right fit for them. Coco and her brother, Keifer, have learned to own their education. The Reinhart’s have observed that homeschooling gives their children the opportunity to advance through subjects at their own level. Coco is also studying Latin and, in her spare time, studies Spanish as well. Coco just finished up with geometry and is now moving into algebra II. Currently, she is on pace to graduate high school by the time she is 16 or sooner. Six days a week, Coco and her mother make the 66-mile round trip from Boulder City to study with the Las Vegas Ballet Company. Coco and her mother arrive back home most days around 8:30 p.m., unless it is a day where she has a private class and gets home around 9:30 p.m., goes to bed and is then back at it again the next day. The family keeps busy with their work and hobbies; Keifer is a bit of an entrepreneur, which keeps him busy in the afternoons, and is active with cross country and archery. Coco’s father, Kenny, works on the Technical Rescue Team with the Las Vegas Fire Department. Although often busy and running in different directions, this family is very closeknit. I’ve never met young people, in this age group, who are more articulate than these two or have more drive. That’s a testament to the teachings imposed by Vanessa and to this family that talks extensively about a wide range of subjects. When Coco’s father suggested placing her into a recreational
ballet class at the age of 2, he thought she would wind up in a cute little duck outfit, but the instructors recognized there was more talent there and advanced Coco. From the age of 3 she studied ballet and tap for seven years before finding the Las Vegas Ballet Company. There, Vanessa felt very lucky to find and have the opportunity to study with Mr. Kyudong Kwak and Ms. Yoomi Lee, who are known worldwide for their talents as principle dancers and solely train classical ballet students. Coco states that her mentors are strong women on both sides of her family, along with her grandfather, whose birthday was one day after hers. That shared birthday created a special bond between the two; mention him and she gets misty-eyed. However, Coco’s biggest mentor and inspiration is Dr. Merritt Moore, also known as the Quantum Ballerina, who at age 29, is a quantum physicist and a world-renowned ballerina. Some of Coco’s recognitions include a feature as a Hello Bezlo role model and a feature by Dr. Moore as a science art sister, recognizing her as a young woman committed to both dance and the sciences. In June, The Las Vegas Ballet Company performed a full ballet of “Giselle,” where Coco was cast as the lead at just 12 years old. It takes years of drive and determination to become an accomplished ballerina and it takes years of strategic studies to master mathematics and the sciences. It also takes a considerable support team to accomplish the paths Coco has embarked upon. When I think of Las Vegas Woman magazine and their desire to lead, motivate, and celebrate women; I can’t help but think Coco and Vanessa Reinhart exemplify this ambition. Should you like to support and watch Coco’s determination to rise and succeed and witness the strength and tutelage of her support team led by Vanessa, you may do so by following her Instagram @coco_reinhart. You can also support the Las Vegas Ballet Company by attending their performances.
It takes years of drive and determination to become an accomplished ballerina and it takes years of strategic studies...

Changing the
TRAJECTORY OF LIVES Kris Engelstad McGarry and The Engelstad Family Foundation By Paul Joncich
Fifty-seven UNLV School of Medicine students gathered recently inside one of the school's classrooms, patiently waiting to meet the woman who is paying their way through four years of medical school.
there, Engelstad said, “(It) made me feel hopeful and encouraged. Too often I get caught up in politics and governance, and while that matters, meeting these young people face-to-face was a reminder that it is really all about the students.”
Without a doubt, many, if not all, were thinking, “How do I find the words to thank her?”
For the students, many of whom would not be able to afford medical school if it were not for the scholarships, this was an opportunity to express their deep gratitude to the person who is helping change the trajectory of their lives.
Kris Engelstad McGarry and the Engelstad Family Foundation funded each of their $100,000 scholarships because she believes in the school’s mission to increase the number of doctors and improve healthcare in Southern Nevada. This would be the first time she would meet the students in person. Walking into the room and seeing them sitting

Enes Djesevic, one of six students chosen to speak at the event, was sitting in the front of the room about 10 feet from Engelstad McGarry, when he abruptly stopped his presentation and said, “…You know, I would really just like to give you a hug!”
The room erupted into applause as the noted philanthropist embraced Djesevic, who would later make it clear that she is “not normally a hugger.” First generation college students do not normally go to medical school either. But dozens of them are enrolled in the UNLV School of Medicine, thanks to generous donors like Kris Engelstad McGarry. To her, the scholarships represent an open door that allows high achievers from economically disadvantaged families to walk through, allowing the students to compete on a more level playing field; eventually becoming doctors, and, as Engelstad McGarry says, “Changing their family trees.” The scholarships are awarded by need because Engelstad McGarry and Senior Associate Dean for Admissions Sam Parrish have a special appreciation for students with a “fire in their bellies.” “Everybody in medical school is smart,” Engelstad McGarry said. “It takes a special kind of person to succeed despite being told ‘no’ your entire life.”
scholarship recipients and the woman herself. “Robert Vargas was adorable during his presentation,” Engelstad McGarry said. “He was an Engelstad Scholar as an undergrad at UNLV and now he’s an Engelstad Scholar at the medical school. He’s first generation. He’s a good example of what we’re trying to do, which is to help good kids do great things.” The scholarships not only help attract the best and the brightest, they also protect students from feeling the crushing weight of student loans. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the median medical school debt is $180,000 and after interest, total repayment can reach upwards of $400,000. Heavy debt often causes students to select higher paying specialties, which contributes to the lack of primary care physicians.
Students Robert Vargas and Kathie Velez told Engelstad McGarry that medical school would have been “completely out of the question” if it were not for the scholarships. Velez, who has worked yearround since she was 16 to help support her family, became emotional explaining what the scholarship means to her. This time, Engelstad McGarry was the one who initiated a hug.
At the UNLV School of Medicine, students spend their first six weeks speaking to residents and learning about medical needs in some of the more distressed neighborhoods of Las Vegas. “They’re doing community service because they have to,” Engelstad McGarry said. “But the hope is they will continue their work in these neighborhoods because knowing the challenges people face will help them become better doctors.” The UNLV School of Medicine is one of the only medical schools in the country where community service is required all four years.
Second-year student Lauren Hollifield presented Engelstad McGarry with a collage featuring photos of the students. Later, Engelstad McGarry would realize that the Hollifield sisters, (Lauren, class of 2021 and Carmen, class of 2022), went to high school with her son. The mixer succeeded in making fundamental connections between Engelstad
Engelstad McGarry joked that she hoped the students would remember her as she gets older and may need medical attention. That brought another rise out of the eternally grateful first- and second-year students, who seemed quite eager to put in the work … so they can get busy returning the favor.

Relationships always seem so great at the beginning, but, as time goes on, that perfect partner can become someone who causes such unhappiness that it has us considering whether to leave. The sad truth is that we often make up the stories we want to believe about the other person before truly knowing them well. It takes six months to two years to stop believing those stories, depending upon how resistant we are to seeing the things we want to avoid. To keep up the fantasy that someone is an ideal partner, many, if not most of us, will ignore, excuse, or rationalize obviously disappointing behavior to keep up the story of who we want them to be, instead of accepting who they are. Clearly, within two years, commitments like shared property or children can get in the way of our willingness to see our partner as less than ideal. So, how bad does it have to get? For most people, physical violence can change everything in a moment. The surprise that at just the right level of frustration, your partner will shove, hit, throw things and injure you can be a shock that helps bring the things you’ve previously ignored into light. That cascade of recollections, combined with the reality that your partner can be violent, can call the commitment you thought was solid into quick question. Similarly, a surprise about differences in beliefs, such as racial prejudices, religion, political affiliations, closeness to family that you love or hate, or they love or hate, even
differences in beliefs about child rearing; any of these can spell significant trouble for relationships as they mature. One of the most common issues for rapid dissolution of a relationship is the betrayal of trust through infidelity, even if it is one chance encounter, or a long, hidden history of one or many affairs. Sadly, another reason for relationship failure is change in physical status: an injury, a disease diagnosis, a change in physical or even sexual capability can trigger distance and resentment in the relationship that can’t be overcome and will result in a breakup. Sticking it out and trying to overcome differences can sometimes be best, since all the investment in the relationship will otherwise be lost. If the differences are too great and the suffering is not going to be stopped, you need to face the truth and deal with the dismantling of the life you were making with your partner. Facing just how much you made up about your partner and how much responsibility you have in a relationship that failed just because you didn’t want to see the person for who they really are is the hard part of facing yourself in your relationship failures. H o w V i r g i n i a To a l e p a i W e n t F r o m P e n n i l e s s t o P r o s p e r o u s Virginia Toalepai, founder and CEO of World Wide Safety (WWS), is the epitome of a positive role model for women both personally and professionally. Toalepai has put together one of the most disciplined and successful teams in the safety consulting industry today, but she began with the odds stacked heavily against her. She started out five years ago, a recently divorced mother of four young daughters, with $12 in her pocket and the idea that she could help make a difference. Today, at 36 years old, she has already founded five successful companies over a five-year period. Her drive to make a positive difference in this world is demonstrated through her widespread charitable contributions, starting her own nonprofit, and her involvement in numerous trade associations, charitable and networking organizations. From her humble beginnings, Toalepai opened WWS in August 2013. WWS assists general contractors, subcontractors, corporations and businesses of all sizes. It has become the largest safety consultation company in Nevada and one of the most successful construction consultation companies in the U.S., a multimillion-dollar operation with 30 employees, and services more than 150 companies and 10,000 workers in several states throughout the nation.
about educating her clients and assisting them with their safety, health and goals. Toalepai is keen on saying she may have the very best job in the world because she helps ensure that her clients’ employees make it home safely to their families every night. She says nothing gives her greater satisfaction. According to Toalepai, “If you desire to be a successful woman in the big business arena, I highly encourage you to do two things: surround yourself with a team that you respect, and that respects you, and always be giving back to the community.” Toalepai has taken an advanced path to business development and networking. She said, “I met just the right people, joined them, found out what they were interested in, what their passion is in life; and I help support them in their pursuit to success.” “I credit much of my company’s success to my amazing employees,” said Toalepai. “They are my company’s most valuable assets. You surround yourself with people who challenge you, are smarter than you, that focus on your company growth, and nothing can stop you!”
With its corporate headquarters in Las Vegas, WWS also has offices in Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Palm Springs and Livermore, California.
Toalepai and her team work closely with countless well-known general contractors, specialty trade subcontractors, corporations and businesses of all sizes in the development of safety training programs and practical hazard controls. These programs include health/safety program development and implementation, safety leadership training, job site safety inspections, regulatory compliance, emergency management, fall protection, construction safety, respiratory protection, forklift training, SDS/hazardous materials/ waste clean-up operations, health and safety management OSHArequired training, and design and implementation of loss prevention initiatives.
Toalepai had a big dream when she came up with the name for her company, World Wide Safety. She had the vision of being the biggest company there is and to be worldwide. She is passionate
“All of us at WWS are passionate about educating our clients and assisting them with their safety, health and goals,” said Toalepai. “That’s why I created my annual Safety Awards to recognize those companies and individuals who are passionate about keeping their employees safe, preventing accidents and clearly saving lives.”

I want to empower these Las Vegas kids by offering job placement and mentor them to pay it forward and be successful as contributing members of our community.
WWS will be hosting its Third Annual Safety Awards on January 17, 2019 at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort. The celebration will be a traditional luauthemed affair, kicking off with a cocktail mix and mingle beginning at 5:30 p.m. The dinner and luau show will start at 6:30 p.m. The awards presentation, recognizing more than 40 organizations ranging from small boutique operations to large corporations that are committed to putting safety first, will follow. The luau show features a performance by Toa Luau, is hosted by “Cousin Billy,” with TV host/producer Courtney Perna from “Las Vegas Now” on KLAS-TV 8 emceeing the program. WWS’s previous Safety Awards have attracted sold-out crowds with hundreds of attendees at each event. “It is my pleasure, and I consider it a privilege to award these local businesses and individuals that have demonstrated their commitment to safety excellence,” said Toalepai. “I am honored to host our annual Safety Awards to recognize those who make safety a priority by excelling at building, facilitating and promoting safety programs.” Additionally, WWS will honor two dynamic, non-profit organizations with funding as its “Giving Back” recipients. WWS has opened nominations to the public for these awards. Visit their website at worldwidesafety.org if you know of a company or individual deserving of this recognition. Though WWS keeps Toalepai busy, she is also the founder of 300 Productions, a music and record label, entertainment, film production and artist management company and LURYSHOC Cleaning Solutions, a cleaning company; she has created a nonprofit organization, RYSHOC Family—a name created off the first two letters of her children’s names—that offers career training to kids and youth, some who have been in foster care; and currently working on plans to build a hotel in her homeland of Samoa. Toalepai is the ultimate female serial entrepreneur.

Toalepai created her nonprofit, RYSHOC Family, in 2017 to engage at-risk and homeless children and youth by helping them create a future they deserve through life skills, career training and higher education scholarships. “I want to empower these Las Vegas kids by offering job placement and mentor them to pay it forward and be successful as contributing members of our community. Along the way, I strive to make them feel loved and embrace them like I do my family,” she said. Toalepai says she is currently working with a grant writer to obtain more funding for RYSHOC Family. Toalepai has also just launched a #SafeKids2018 drawing contest where school-age kids submit drawings portraying safety first. She will be providing three $1,000 prizes for schools (grade school, middle school, high school) in the Clark County School District. In addition, the three winning kids will receive a $250 Visa gift card, trophy and certificate, and their schools will receive plaques. She has been featured in numerous articles and writes a weekly column for the Samoa Observer, based on how women can use her success story to boost their businesses. Topics for her column include success of a woman running a construction consultation company, tips on how to be a successful business person, work of WWS and women in leadership roles. Toalepai will be breaking ground on a beach-front hotel she is building in her homeland of Apia, Samoa at the end of this year. The first phase of the new hotel will include eight modern, private villas all overlooking the ocean, a guest lobby, pool, bar and two ballrooms for special events. “I’m so excited about my hotel in my hometown,” said Toalepai. “It gives me one more excuse to get back there often to see my family and friends I don’t get to see often enough.” The official name of the hotel and project cost have not been released yet.

According to Toalepai, “It will take more than just women desiring to overturn years of inequality to create more leadership opportunities for female executives.” But she says, “We women can employ key strategies to help combat the leadership gap and move our workforce towards more balanced leadership: be confident, take control, speak up, generate revenue and ask for money.” Toalepai sits on the board of directors for

YOUR FAMILY'S HEALTH Knowledge is Power Be Your Family’s Healthcare Hero It is flu season, and it is a great time to take a step back and reevaluate healthcare needs within your family. Healthcare can be daunting and, oftentimes, we do not spend enough time planning for the unknown until we truly need it. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women make approximately 80 percent of healthcare decisions in the United States and are more likely to be the caregivers when a family member falls ill. Know Your Options Illnesses are the parts of life that we cannot always plan, but what we can do is to know when to go to the emergency room or urgent care. The severity of the medical issue is the key in knowing where to seek help. If the condition is life-threatening, go to the emergency room. If the healthcare need is a minor illness, then an urgent care center may be enough. Find Your Champions You can be the biggest champion of your personal healthcare, as well as that of your family’s healthcare,
and be the best advocate for your needs. Yet, it is important to have a primary care physician, local emergency room, local urgent care and specialists whom your family trusts to ensure that you are receiving the best quality care possible. Be Consistent As your family’s healthcare hero, ensure that you are taking preventative healthcare measures. Get an annual physical; know your health numbers (cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and weight, according to the American Heart Association); remain active, exercise and eat healthy. These practices are key to maintaining good health and will assist in your longevity to live life to the fullest! YOU ARE MORE
than just a sheet of paper Three Strategies to Increase Your Career Marketability and Confidence Beyond Your Resume By Jan Tanaka
The day I facilitated my very first leadership module, I was a little nervous, a little excited, and a lot sick to my stomach. I walked into the training room, took a deep breath and began my presentation. About an hour into the session, an older man raised his hand questioning my knowledge. He questioned my right to be where I was: at the front of the room, leading. For a moment I fought the tears. Then I fired back. I explained that, while I may not have known everything there was to know about that day’s topic, my life experiences had taught me a great deal about leadership. By the end of the module, he had become one of my biggest career supporters.

UNCOVER UNIVERSAL INTELLIGENCE
Universal intelligence is gained when we implement our everyday experience and knowledge within our career. Create an “experiences timeline,” your “life resume.” This is a personal inventory of critical experiences that have occurred in our lives, linked to lessons learned and leveraged to demonstrate your knowledge and skills. “Experience is the Teacher of all Things” For example, consider all your leadership positions in the past. This can include parenting, a sibling or even the head of a group project. What experiences have you gained that are relevant in the workplace?
BUILD YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Your board of directors is a team of people who represent your personal interests. There are three positions I want you to ensure you fill: a mirror, a mentor and a sponsor. The mirror is your professional best friend; someone you can open up with, but who will reflect hard truths. They will keep you aligned and on track. The mentor is someone who is where you want to be. They act as an advisor, sharing their knowledge and experience. The sponsor. My favorite definition of sponsorship is from the book, “Knowing Your Value,” which states that “sponsors will do more by using their connections and their influence to advocate for an employee.”
PROMOTE YOUR PURPOSE
Why would someone want to promote, hire or recognize you? Your response should reflect your purpose, not your position. This opens you up to greater opportunities. People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it. That is a powerful statement from Simon Sinek, author and speaker. With this mentality, a front desk agent can boast that they set the tone for the guests’ entire stay. A restaurant host becomes a dining experience expert. A mother realizes that she’s a personal development coach and event coordinator. I once shared that my mission is to bridge the confidence gap for women in the workplace. If I had just said, “I’m a corporate trainer,” I wouldn’t be where I am today. I am here to encourage all women to embrace their whole selves and use their stories to build marketability and confidence in their careers.
So I ask you, beyond your resume, what story will your career tell? Winter 2018-19 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

WONDERFUL F o c u s i n g o n t h e P o s i t i v e R e s h a p e s Yo u r O u t c o m e s By Tonya Twitchell In my home, there is a sign that reads, “Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen.” This sign serves as a constant, daily reminder that the expectations and assumptions we bring to each moment matter. They shape our energy levels and excitement. They shape our ability to see and tap into solutions and possibilities. They shape our willingness to grant forgiveness and grace when we and others misspeak or misstep. Where in your life is it easy to be optimistic and energetic about the moment you are about to step into? Where in your life is it more challenging, perhaps seemingly impossible, to assume and expect that something “wonderful” can and will occur? When was the last time you approached a potentially challenging conversation, meeting or interaction with the certainty and knowingness that something positive would inevitably result? In our lives we all tell stories. We tell stories about events, about ourselves and others, and about what is—or is not— possible in our lives. What we forget, at times, is that the stories we tell are self-created—and often self-fulfilling—and are based upon the assumptions and expectations with which we start. What we forget is that there are always multiple versions of every story. There are multiple ways that the story can be told and multiple ways that each moment can play out. The origins of our stories are our expectations and assumptions; the outcomes and results that become possible are shaped and molded in the moments before we step into the actual moment itself. The assumptions that we bring to each new moment either point us toward possibilities or they position us toward struggle and lack. They either remind us that we are powerful, capable, creative beings or they defeat us, and others, before we even begin. Reflect upon a difficult conversation you recently had with an important person in your life. This person might be a customer, co-worker, relative, or spouse. Think about how you prepared to step into that conversation. What were your assumptions and expectations about the other person, his or her perspective and the outcome that might result? What did you assume would be present in that conversation? For example, were you expecting that person to be angry, withdrawn or combative? How did you expect
that you would feel during and after that interaction? Taking this one step further, what were you feeling in those moments before the conversation? What physical sensations did you experience? What were you thinking? How were you sitting or standing? What was your energy level? How certain were you that you could “solve” or appropriately address whatever needed to be resolved? Now imagine that you could go back in time and reset or redo those preparatory moments. Imagine that you assumed “the wonderful.” Say the word “wonderful” out loud and notice what your body automatically wants to do. Did you just smile? Perhaps feel a bit lighter or more open? How much more energy, certainty and positivity might you have been able to bring to that moment if you had expected nothing less than “wonderful” rather than whatever mindset you chose by default? Focusing on “the wonderful” does not make challenges or obstacles go away. Focusing on “the wonderful” does not guarantee that life—or even that moment—will be wonderful or great. Focusing on “the wonderful” is not a magic pill or magic formula. Focusing on “the wonderful” is simply a way to give yourself and others a fighting chance. The next time you notice yourself assuming or setting an expectation, I invite you to choose “the wonderful” over what your current default assumptions may be. Allow honoring yourself and your possibilities in a different, more intentional way. Discover for yourself the physiological, energetic and psychological differences that exist when we step into a moment focused on positive outcomes (“the wonderful”) versus negative outcomes or a less intentional default state. As a mentor of mine once reminded me, in our lives most of our suffering is of our own making. Much of our suffering occurs in the moments when we are making up a story or forgetting that another version of the story could exist. As you prepare to step into your very next moment, allow for honoring and championing yourself and your possibilities. Position yourself for success, choose “the wonderful,” and suffer only when it is truly appropriate, and only after you have exhausted all other possible versions of the story. Assume your “wonderful” is waiting and allow yourself to relish and enjoy and celebrate the moments when it is!

Grief seems to speed dial previous losses in an effort to conduct an awful conference call on your heart...
What
REMAINS Life After a Loss By Jennifer Battisti Losing is hard. Letting go of a career, a stage of life, a relationship, or the heart-gutting anguish of losing a loved one. It all stems from the universal human truth that we will lose. I recently had to say goodbye to my Labrador retriever. Even though he lived a long life with me, losing him was devastating, exhausting, and, it turns out, embarrassing. That’s right, I felt ashamed of my tenderness. I find it strange and alarming that euthanizing a beloved pet has brought up the internal urgency to just get on with it. As if this deeply human experience should be dealt with in the same manner as laundry day—in a neatly assembled fashion of washing, drying, folding; the stained fabric back in order before day’s end. What remains after a loss is often messy and sometimes bizarre. What is most disturbing is that I do not hear anyone talking about it. There is the amnesia. At midnight, I stand at the open fridge, my bewilderment strobed in honest wattage. The predictability of the hinge, the obeying bulb flooding the darkness with the demand of my wrist. It feels like the only power I have. This is the hour distraction cannot fix. The hour when I cannot remember. The hour I stand holding the stupid square of cheese in my hand, pill dissolving in the curled fist of the other. There is no animal to give the medication to anymore. The habit of love is difficult to break. Night presents me with the possibility of animated denial, a phase of the moon only the grieving can see while the oriented sleep unburdened outside the grip of the boogiemen of bargaining. The pamphlet I received on grieving calls my delusions “grief bursts,” confetti poppers of bereavement that explode when I think of our 15-year, fur-laden union. When I realize there is nowhere to store the gravity of my dog’s absence except my two hollow lungs, I am stranded in that moment. The game of death, distraction and denial is as flimsy as the consolation trinkets we hold onto—the locket of fur, the clay mold of the paw. I go to the farmer’s market. There are dogs. Everywhere. Every paw, every fierce hindquarter alerts me of the bounding emptiness, the permanence of death. I wander into a booth with hanging crystals and burning incense. There is a rootless plant for sale, the Rose of Jericho. It looks like a dead brown fist of leaves, but the energy healer assures me, once placed in water, it will unfold and soften. The leaves
will fan out in lacy green stems. The healer tells me this magical plant will do that indefinitely: clench into a dry ball when out of water, release again, ripened with health when immersed. I am told it will never die, which I am suspicious about and chalk up to hocus-pocus, but still, I buy two. Its promise to absorb negative energies lends me enough willingness to follow through and witness the transformation. The resurrection fern fattens in the bowl as it plumps with water. I am impressed. Grief seems to speed dial previous losses in an effort to conduct an awful conference call on your heart—the death collective, which at first feels like salt in your fresh wound, but I wonder if grief is a wound that never heals, never truly scars, but instead expands and contracts when placed in the liquid of loss. I try to, for the first time in my life, not look away. I tell the truth when people ask me how I am holding up. “This is hard,” I tell them, needing to hear myself say it as a confirmation, but also to normalize the grieving process. When the vet calls to tell me his remains are ready, I cannot find time in my over-scheduled week to pick them up in a way that honors this bruised, transparent time in my life. I pick up his ashes on the way to get my brakes done. I sit in the Subaru service lounge with the little cedar box in a paper bag next to me while I wait. I feel guilty for carrying my grief in a to-go bag. Losing makes you brave. I go rogue on my grief/shame and Instagram my current feeling, hashtag and all, not to trivialize it, but because I know there are others holding the square of cheese at midnight, cursing muscle memory and dysplasia, that abnormal dislocation; the disruption of the emotional universe they once shared, with their loved one, that important stage of their life. Loss is loss. Empty nest, aging, divorce. They are different breeds of deaths. What if we leaned into it, became curious about it? What if we were investigators of our experience instead of fixers, or runners or liars? What if we admit that during the agony of loss, there is also joy, levity and even peace. Death also contains its counterpart: life, memory, love. It reminds us of the power of connecting. There is something living in the state of loss. What might we find out about this rootless plant we carry—how the unfurling again and again after a dry spell opens a space for us not to get through an experience but to fully be with it.

SHE'S BRINGING
Happy
BACK
A L o c a l Wo m a n ’s Q u e s t t o R a i s e Awareness for Mental Health The Bringing Happy Back Experience is bringing a long-time vision to fruition for founder Tonya Farrens, marrying her dedication to being a vessel of positive support with her aspiration to produce a concert for her late father, Wayne Farrens. Sr. Farrens is a suicide survivor, having lost her father to his own struggles after a lifetime of sharing music and travels together. The news affected her greatly, causing her to lose focus and motivation to take care of herself for a short time. In talking with other survivors and having open conversations, she recognized the power in recognizing the community of people who share her plight, who understand what she is feeling because they are feeling it too.
80
Winter 2018-19 â—Ś lvwomanmagazine.com
Farrens started taking proper care of herself again and continued to talk with people, uncovering more of herself and others along the climb to a better mental state. One day a man overheard her having one such conversation and decided to share his own story of survival, which he had kept to himself for over 30 years. She identified with him, seeing how the ability to feel safe speaking about it immediately had a positive impact on him. Farrens knew then that she needed to do more to create a forum for people to communicate their losses – and their victories – as well as a means to spread this message for anyone dealing with issues on either side of the battle. Over the years, Farrens has worked in executive roles for Cirque du Soleil, BEST Agency, and even toured with best-selling authors. As a veteran of the event and entertainment industry, and now running a production company, Farrens knows how to plan a night filled with fun and can get the right people onto the stage to put on a good show. Her father inspired this love in her from a young age, spending much of her formative years as a touring musician and opening for bands such as The Who, Iron Butterfly, and Deep Purple. Farrens, the oldest of five and growing up privy to the rock and roll life, developed a passion for music and entertainment herself. This shared love for the arts served as a strong bond for Farrens and her father as the two, living a long distance apart, would exchange new music and new favorite artists with one another. This was a ritual that never diminished. She grew up developing that passion into a career and now a purpose, seeing no better way to honor her father or open people up to feel comfortable about talking than by sharing great performances from some of the best entertainers worldwide.
Bringing Happy Back Producer, Tonya Farrens
On January 31, 2019, Farrens is putting on the Bringing Happy Back Experience, a benefit production to both raise awareness and money for mental health issues. Taking place on what would have been her father’s 73rd birthday, BHB is an event Farrens knows her father would have enjoyed, with a lineup of world-class entertainers and musicians. This one-of-a-kind event will encourage the community to share personal stories, experiences and talents with the sole purpose of helping others find their way back from tragedy, depression or adversity. Las Vegas will unite to assure the rest of the world that their lives matter, empowering people to fight for their lives, ask for the help they deserve, and get their happy back. The inspiring show will be performed in front of a live audience and will also be streamed globally to veterans, military bases, first responders, wellness facilities and over 200 college campuses, including UNLV, San Francisco State, Princeton University, and UCLA. Farrens wants to showcase that nothing compares to the scale of entertainment this city has to offer. For her, it is not only an unsurpassed level of astounding talent, but also a beautiful community of internal support. “I would give anything to have my dad here, but I don’t. However, what I can do is make the best of a tragic experience,” Farrens said. “I can use my voice to give voice to those too shaky to use theirs right now. This is the greatest honor in my life to date.” For more information about the event please visit tonyafarrens.com/ partner or call 702.426.2488.

A Goal
REALIZED
How Perseverance, Determination a n d D r i ve L e d T h i s L a s Ve ga s L o ca l to the Job of Her Dreams By Andeen Rose Clark Las Vegas doubles down in the world of racing, boasting two major NASCAR races a year and is the first NHRA Top Fuel track west of the Mississippi to host the first inaugural four-wide track. This year, for the first time ever, the track is sold out. As the sport continues to grow its audience in Las Vegas, there is one shining star who stands out: KJ Hare, a Las Vegas casino host. Her client list reads the “who’s who” of the racing world. Moving from California to Las Vegas 12 years ago to be closer to her family, Hare had a goal of becoming a casino host. She was determined to see this dream come to fruition and knew that she had to start somewhere, so she did. As a hostess at Lawry’s, Hare quickly advanced in her profession. By chance, she moved over to Rao’s inside Caesars Palace where she spent the next four years cultivating her connections. After accomplishing all that she could at Caesars, Hare left to become a part of a brand new hotel, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, where she started out as a concierge and quickly learned the ins and outs of what it takes to entertain the gamblers. Hare had a growing list of friends staying and gambling at the property and, to enhance their stay, would introduce them to the marketing department who would provide the comps and fulfill the guests’ needs outside the scope of her job. Hare had been developing these friendly relationships and felt it was time to ask for the job she had set her eyes on years before. She went to a long-time friend and mentor Casey Cohen and stated her case. Exactly one year from the date of hire, her dream came true. Hare had earned the role of casino host. During her off time, you can find Hare at the track, any track, as she loves racing, “Anything motorsports, NASCAR, Indy, Drags, you name it,” she said. “As long as it is loud, powerful and fast, I’m a huge fan.” Which takes us to her niche, Hare’s guests consist of some of the top drivers in the world. She has built strong relationships in the racing community, a tightknit family that works together to help each other out. Make no mistake, it is competitive, but they always have room to help a friend. Her love of racing has turned into the dream job of being a casino host in Las Vegas. Last year, she strongly suggested to The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas that they should become a NASCAR sponsor. They listened, sponsoring the iconic #43 car driven by Bubba Wallace, owned by Richard Petty Motorsports. She is at the top of her game and travels around the United States to not only support her drivers, but as a diehard fan. When asked what she does in her free time, it is fairly obvious, “I go to the races, I’ve yet to miss a race,” said Hare. The race industry is growing in Las Vegas and Hare has chosen hard work and determination to build her brand and her guest list on her terms, never using gender as a catapult for her career. Something she prides herself on is refusing to see gender, “I know my business and I see myself as an equal, and I do what it takes to get the job done,” she says. Diehard race fan, Raiders and Vegas Golden Knights fan, Hare can see an incredible future of growth for Las Vegas and her guests can be assured she knows how to take care of them; she walks the walk and talks the talk.

FADE AWAY... F o u r B u s i n e s s Tr e n d s t o Wa t c h i n 2 0 1 9 By Dida Clifton
There used to be two major retail book stores in the U.S. Can you name both? Borders and Barnes and Noble. Borders was unable to keep up, so they were forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2011. Yet, Barnes and Noble is still in business and thriving. When Barnes and Noble was investing in the future of online and digital, Borders chose to invest in more retail locations that sold CDs, hardcopies of books and DVDs. Keeping up with the external changes is vital for any business. Where we work, with whom we work and how we do business are all changing. Are you ready? Here are four trends we saw in 2018 that will continue changing how we do business and how it affects our lives in 2019 and beyond. 1. Virtual offices, co-working spaces and remote workers When I started my virtual bookkeeping business 17 years ago, there were very few people who knew what a virtual assistant was. With today’s technology, people from all over the world are working together remotely. This trend will continue not only because of the technology available to us, but also because it can be much more efficient. The new generation of millennials and their desire for “work experiences” will call for it. 2. New workforce By 2020, millennials will make up one-third of the adults in the U.S. This generation is not satisfied with a 9-to-5 cubicle job. They want more freedom
84
Winter 2018-19 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com
to produce their work while enjoying their lives. Take it or leave it, this is the new workforce. While millennials get a bad rap, they’re not all as lazy as advertised. They just want to do things differently. 3. A very diverse, younger and older workforce It’s not only the younger generation that you will need to understand: employees are projected to stay in the workforce longer. Not because they have to, but because they want to. We’re living longer, and retirement may not be something that happens at 62. This means that five generations of workers will work together in collaborative teams. 4. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Development of more augmented reality, conversational chatbots and smart voice will have us talking to and depending on computers. One in five workers engaged in mostly non-routine tasks will rely on AI to do their jobs. In a new report on data and AI trends by Gartner research, AI will become a positive net job motivator, creating 2.3 million jobs while only eliminating 1.8 million jobs by the year 2020. Are you prepared for how flexible the 2020 workforce will be and ready to embrace virtual? I’ve been ready since 2001 and am so excited to combine real professional staff with technology to help grow small business faster, better, and smarter. VISION BOARD S e t t i n g Yo u r I n t e n t i o n s , G e t t i n g C l e a r, a n d A c h i e v i n g Yo u r D r e a m s By Jodi Friedman Have you ever created a vision board? If you have not yet, you might be wondering what all the excitement is about. If you are one of the many who believes in their power, then you know exactly why you continue making them: to bring more focus and reflection to your successful life.
How can creating a vision board become an incredible, lifetransforming project that leads you to a better life? The real key to a powerful vision board that will manifest amazing potential is to create your board with intention and clarity. Getting clear about your purpose, your job and your relationships is a must. Also, get clear about what is blocking you from happiness right now in these areas. What daily habits keep you stuck and away from your dreams? Be open to releasing the blocks you have in order to make space, so your new expressions have room to manifest. I have made at least 10 different vision boards where everything placed on them had been manifested. This is why I am so passionate to share my knowledge with others. In my experience, in an open and positive workshop environment, people can share enthusiastically to create a powerful and effective vision board. The first step in attracting your dreams is to allow yourself to be creative and recognize what desires live deep inside of you. Be careful what you ask for and be intentional. A vision board is typically a poster board of your glued images evoking positive feelings that you would like to have more of in your life. The idea is that when you surround yourself with images of who and what you desire to become, your attention focuses easily as you get out of your own way. When you start becoming extremely clear about what you wish to experience, you will notice how your attention to your desire will bring it to you. This is the Law of Attraction at work; a universal law that works naturally. You can achieve the results you are looking for, and more, by also creating a daily trigger to attract your desired outcome.
Here are some basic steps to create a vision board where you can manifest your dreams: • Decide in which areas of your life you want to create change: relationships, health, career, hobbies, financial, spiritual, romance • Using your intention and journaling your feelings; create clarity around at least three to five areas that you are ready to shift • Find pictures that describe the things that you’re choosing. Create or find phrases that clarify your goals and dreams • Listen to soothing music as you flip through magazines or pictures you already have • Cut and paste pictures onto different areas of your board that stimulate you to start the creation process • Add phrases or positive sayings to support the pictures you chose • Place your completed vision board in a place where you can see it daily • Affirm your vision every day and ALLOW the energy to flow as you draw in the things you desire
The Super Glue To Manifesting Your Dreams The way in which you can access the secret sauce to your goals and dreams lies in one area not limited by your conscious mind. In my vision board workshops, I take clients into the treasure box of their subconscious mind, where authentic truth and compassion live. Once tapped in, a person’s inner guidance can encourage them to take a deep dive into the unknown. Can everybody do this? Yes, they can! By allowing their thoughts to relax through breathing techniques, they can bring out what has remained hidden below the 60,000 thoughts they have every day. And here is the final ingredient: Once you are clear in your intentions and how you will feel having it, act as if you already have it. Create that experience in your thoughts, words, and actions for yourself and you become your new design. Your subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference when you tell it and show it that you are truly happy. Get quiet and slow yourself down to change your direction positively right now. A great new vision board can change things around you; making life more fun, fresh, and easy. Just Breathe and Be. Do. Have.

PARKINSON'S DISEASE One Local Nonprofit is Filling a Void and Being a Friend to Those in Need By Jennifer Florendo
An estimated 60,000 individuals are diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) each year. That equates to one person every nine minutes. Parkinson’s Disease is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder, specifically a movement disorder, affecting the dopamine-producing cells of the brain that control muscle movement. When those cells die, symptoms of PD appear in patients, including rigidity in movement, tremors, instability, gait problems and reduced facial expressions. Finding support groups and resources for the approximately 20,000 Las Vegas residents who live with PD was a challenge. That changed in 2014 when Jamillah Ali-Rahman founded Friends of Parkinson’s, Inc. and committed to filling that void in our community for those affected by PD. “In Las Vegas, there are tens of thousands of people living with PD, but they didn’t have a dedicated group to provide support and resources for themselves and caregivers,” says Ali-Rahman. “The number of instances of PD is growing at an alarming pace. As it stands, those living with PD will more than double the number of patients by 2040.” Friends of Parkinson’s is a nonprofit organization that provides support, resources and lifestyle management to those affected by neurological disorders and the neurological community related to PD in Las Vegas and surrounding areas. The events are designed to create engagement among the movement disorder community in a safe and comfortable environment where patients may not otherwise be encouraged to leave their own homes. These support groups are professionally facilitated and are offered at no cost to the participants. Through fundraising events, including the annual Funny Bunny Run in the spring, the Sock Hop

in the fall, and other related events including two medical symposiums and educational opportunities, Friends of Parkinson’s builds hope in the neurological community. Ali-Rahman is often asked about her connection to PD and the answer is a little surprising. “No one in my family has PD. I just simply knew the statistics and knew the need for an organization like ours to help our community. And we are growing rapidly; we just opened an office in Pahrump to help even more members of our community,” says Ali-Rahman. "And I love what I do.” Ali-Rahman’s perseverance for raising awareness about movement disorders propelled her to author and publish a book, “Living Well With Parkinson’s Disease: A Beginner’s Guide,” which is available locally by contacting the Friends of Parkinson’s office and online through the website. Friends of Parkinson’s was clearly born out of passion and continues to grow with the hard work and dedication of the board members. This can’t be done without the support of a strong and dedicated board. Board members include: Dr. Eric Farbman, Neurologist, Movement Disorder Specialist; Dr. Merrill Landers, PT, DPT, PhD, OCS, Chair and Professor, UNLV, Department of Physical Therapy; Jacqueline C. Jones, MSW, LSW, Social Worker; Mark Zobrist, Attorney at Law, Retired; Emily Higby, CEO, Asian Community Resource Center. “There’s nothing like giving back to make a difference for the community.” For more information on Friends of Parkinson’s, please visit friendsofparkinsons.org or call 702.381.4141.

NEW ALL-ELECTRIC 2019 I-PACE
ELECTRIFY THE PACE The revolutionary design of the I-PACE is both true to the spirit of Jaguar and the I-PACE Concept. From the pronounced front wheel arches to the rear diffuser, every supercar-inspired styling element allows the I-PACE to slice cleanly through the air for improved range and stability. The bold grille curves inwards - reducing drag by channelling air through the hood scoop and out, where it passes over the roofline that is curved for optimum efficiency.
