LETTER FROM THE

managing editor Spring is a wonderful time for renewal, rebirth and reinvigorating ourselves. The dreary winter days are long gone, but the sweltering summer days are still weeks away. It is the season where it is not too far into the year where our goals or resolutions are completely shattered, but, if they are, we can still get back on track. At the first sign of temperatures in the mid60s, I want to open all the windows and clean out all the closets, which is a topic we cover in this issue. Also, at this point in the year, I am pretty well versed in using my word for the year, which, this year, is “me.” This is going to be the year I take the time out for self-care and some selfishness, if warranted. It is a season full of love and promise. In this issue, we begin a new four-part series called “The Goodness Experience,” which takes us on a journey to finding and creating joy all around us. If growing stronger in your career is on your to-do list this year, we have all you will need, from creating your elevator pitch to perfecting your networking experiences. If you find yourself in resolution purgatory, you will enjoy our article on checking in on your resolutions. No matter where you are in your goals for the year, it is not too late to get on track. If you are finding yourself questioning a relationship, you will want to read Stand in Love, which reminds us that we cannot fix people, or Stop for Love where we share ideas on putting your relationship first. My hope for all of us in this season is that we find joy in the things around us, focus on ourselves and give ourselves the grace to live each day to its fullest. Cheers!

STANDARDS OF

Integrity

D e f i n i n g Yo u r C o r e Va l u e s f o r Unapologetic Living By Ava Mucikyan

I am not just talking about having standards with men or women, things you buy or hotels you stay at, but more like having a standard blueprint for life. Spend some time crafting your blueprint of life, then walk the talk. It may sound easier said than done, but with a little work it can easily be accomplished. How do you go about creating these standards for yourself? Step 1: Connect with your true self and figure out what makes you happy and gives you joy; not people around you, not your child, not your family, but you. What do you like and what do you dislike? Make sure the “why” comes from your authentic self; the inner child of yours, not the societally programmed you that is worried about others’ opinions. Really spend some time getting to know yourself. The best way to start is to weed out things that you do not like. Let your intuition be your guide and your heart be your navigation system. Make a list of everything that makes you happy and brings you joy. Step 2: Write a list of all the people that you admire from teachers, neighbors, to celebrities and influencers. Then, write every single personality feature you admire about each person. Take a minute to read each one of these qualities out loud and pay attention how it makes you feel. Write

18

Spring 2019 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

down every single quality and trait that you feel strongly connected to. These are qualities that reside within you, and you just need to connect with them. Congratulations, you have officially established your standards of integrity. Now if you take these standards and add the choices below based on these standards, while keeping your dream in mind, it will give you the shortest and straightest formula to your dream. Alternatively, when you deviate from your own standards, or make choices disregarding them, you violate your own integrity, which results in energy drain. Guilt, resentment, regret and remorse start to creep in and sidetrack you. Don’t worry, each day is a new slate. The next time you are presented with a choice, ask yourself: - Is this in line with my standards of integrity? - Is this in line with my dream or purpose? By simply answering these two questions, you should be able to make an educated decision. Harness your energy by living your blueprint and it will keep you on track and help fuel your dreams.

Hormones,

HAPPINESS, HOT FLASHES ... OH MY! W h e n i t C o m e s t o O v e r a l l Wo m e n ’s H e a l t h a n d Satisfaction, There is More to it than Just Hormones By Jennifer Florendo “How are you doing?” a simple question to ask, yet complex to answer for many women when talking with friends and even in their doctor’s office. Too often symptoms like a glum mood, low libido or high anxiety are casually brushed off as simply being a part of life: you are a friend, a mom, a wife, a co-worker, a daughter; full of responsibilities, yet often forgetting to put yourself first and instead taking care of everyone else. So, when a simple visit to the doctor asks that loaded question of how are you, just how are you when it comes to your health? We aren’t talking just your mental health, but also your sexual heath. Treating women’s health is now being looked at in a new way with more plant-based treatments. Research shows that a simple, plant-based phytonutrient can have a big impact on the overall health of women of all ages. Dr. Gerald Haase, clinical professor of surgery at the University of Colorado, has been active in various clinical research trials for over 30 years, but recently became interested in researching how plant-based nutrients can impact women’s health. He realized that when looking at the landscape of patients, there are over 20 available medications for men’s sexual health and well-being versus one approved for women, and this one comes with a myriad of potential side effects. It occurred to him that women’s health is often ignored, overlooked and an afterthought. When it comes to their health, everything seems to be focused on hormones or something that should not bear too much concern until after the age of 50. “That is quite frankly wrong,” said Dr. Haase. “Women’s health is about more than just female hormones. The hormone issue in women is not something that should just be of concern at the age of menopause,” he said. “Hormone levels are affected from a younger age on, often starting in the early 30s. We also have to look at four other areas of well-being in total.” These four areas focus on cardiovascular health, metabolic health, psychosocial health and neurocognitive health, and in conjunction with sexual health and libido, are equally important. Filling that gap is what propelled Dr. Haase to explore plant-based phytonutrients and make the topic of women’s health less of a taboo topic. Realizing that what is normal varies extremely from woman to woman and to examine this more closely, he needed to look at function and dysfunction. “Dysfunction affects women of all ages, it is not just about menopausal women,” said Dr. Haase.

. . .w o m e n ’s h e a l t h is often ignored, o v e r l o o ke d a n d a n after-thought. When it comes to their health, everything seems to be focused on hormones or something that should not bear too much concern until after the age of 50.

That is quite frankly wrong...

“Ten percent of all women have some degree of sexual dysfunction. By the time you get to age 40, it affects up to 30 percent of women, and by age 50-55, up to 75 percent of women are affected with dysfunction at some level.” Dr. Haase’s research has shown that plant-based nutrients have the ability to alter the aspects of women’s health: cardiovascular, metabolic, lipids, cholesterol and the unpleasant symptoms of mood swings and low energy levels. What he discovered was that a simple plant we most often encounter in tea can have a big impact on the lives of women. Bergamot, the superfruit native to the Calabrian region of Southern Italy, has shown to have beneficial effects in overall women’s health. This particular region yields the most potent citrus bergamot fruit in the world, which enables BPF (bergamot polyphenolic fraction) production of 47 percent or

greater, the most concentrated extract available anywhere. BergaFEMME is the perfect place to start for those who are ready to incorporate positive changes into their health routine, bring their energy levels up and increase their libido. BergaMet is the only company whose bergamot extract is approved by the prestigious Accademia del Bergamotto in Calabria, Italy. Here in Las Vegas, BergaMet N.A. has the exclusive rights to distribute BergaMet products to the U.S., Canada and Mexico. BergaMet is available worldwide and is the highest concentrated BPF available. No other company can match the strength of BergaMet products. Chef

CHANH BOUPHA Master of Culinary Creations for Emerald at Queensridge

Growing up in Savannakhet, Laos, Chef Chanh Boupha spent his early years watching his mother cook and having a strong desire to help her. When it was time for him to pursue a career, he chose the culinary path and, in 1977, completed an apprenticeship program on ice sculpting, carving and floral designs. In 1978, Chef Boupha moved to the United States to continue pursuing his dream of becoming a chef. His culinary experience has continued with specialties in all major culinary areas, such as: sauces, broiler, steak, fry station, pantry station, saucier, with his cooking style and recipes inspired by French cuisine. Chef Boupha fulfilled another passion of teaching culinary students at Le Cordon Bleu culinary college for 13 years prior to its closing in 2016. After that, he joined the team at Emerald at Queensridge where he now creates breath-taking sculptures and carvings out of fruits and vegetables; turnips, watermelons and pumpkins are elegantly carved into flowers and beautiful table décor. Additionally, Chef Boupha curates the menus for Emerald at Queensidge’s exclusive wine dinners through tasting the wines and then pairing them with a multi-course menu offering. Going forward, Chef Boupha looks forward to creating menus for the special events at Emerald at Queensridge, including weekend brunch, fundraisers, parties and more.

EVENTS IN LAS VEGAS Emerald at Queensridge

Emerald at Queensridge is one of Las Vegas’ premier wedding venues, located in the Summerlin area. Offering a non-gaming, off-the-Strip venue, Emerald at Queensridge is neither a hotel nor a private country club. This exquisite, single-event facility specializes in weddings and receptions, while also an ideal location for holiday parties, birthday bashes, luncheons, awards banquets, bar and bat mitzvahs, quinceaneras and more. Emerald at Queensridge, is taking social events to a whole new level. Expanding its success to include hosting wine pairing dinners and dancing. These dinners combine socializing with wine and dinner to bring a wine club to life. Whether you are an experienced wine drinker or simply trying to taste and learn something new, the dinners are a perfect pairing for anyone. The idea behind the events is to create an ongoing experience for wine drinkers and wine explorers alike by building a resource for guests who want to be a part of a wine-loving community. Owners Leon and Renae Iunco begin their planning by working with local wine distributors to select the wines. “Each grape has a specific palate. For example, cabernet sauvignon pairs well with fatty meats. Whites pair well with seafood or chicken. So, we begin selecting the wines before creating the food menu,” explains Leon Iunco. Once the desired wines are selected, Chef Chanh Boupha custom creates a dinner menu. The evening begins with a champagne toast and amusebouche, followed by the three courses of selected wine and dinner pairings. The dinner portion wraps up with a dessert selection followed by dancing, socializing and photo booth fun. At the event, a representative will educate guests on the featured wines. Emerald at Queensridge is more than just a wedding venue: they are expanding into community events, serving nonprofits for fundraisers and galas, and events such as arts and crafts shows, farmers markets, Easter brunch, and more. Embracing your value has nothing to do with how others see you, it starts and ends with the way you s e e y o u r s e l f.

3Ways to EMBRACE YOUR

VALUE By Galit Ventura-Rozen

Embracing your value. What does that mean? It means you embrace your worth and you do not allow anyone at any time to treat you less than what you deserve. Have you ever walked into a room and right away noticed a woman who stood out and thought, “Wow, she is amazing.”? More than likely, the woman you see embraces her value and what you are experiencing is the effect of her doing so. You cannot expect anyone to know your value if you do not believe it and know it for yourself first. Embracing your value has nothing to do with how others see you, it starts and ends with the way you see yourself. Do you see yourself as smart, funny, beautiful, driven, successful? It is always easier to see the value in the people you love in place of yourself.

3 Ways to Embrace Your Value: 1. Make a list without thinking, or stopping, of all the positive qualities that describe you in your personal and professional life. This list can include any characteristic that you see as positive. This, at times, is challenging for women because we were not all taught to look at ourselves in a positive way and embrace our value. This list is invaluable if you make sure not to stop and overthink what you are writing. One way you can accomplish this list is by thinking of the words people most often compliment you with. Until today when someone says I am amazing, I still struggle to believe it. Why? Because as women we do not commonly see ourselves in the way others do. 2. Listen to that voice in your head. This step may seem a bit odd but think about it: That voice in your head is you. If it is telling you that you deserve that promotion or questioning why you are staying in a job where you are not valued, listen. That voice in our head can be fearful to listen to, but if a thought continues to come up repeatedly about how you are not being valued, are being mistreated or anything similar, you are doing yourself a disservice by not listening. Yes, it can be scary to make a change, or a decision based on your value, but time and time again I have watched the most fearful decisions have positive outcomes. Remember that saying, “When one door closes, another opens.” 3. Own your power. I believe each of us has a gift inside that many do not share with others because they fear judgement. If you are not surrounded by women and men who support every crazy idea you have, find those who will. You own your power by knowing you are capable of more and the things holding you back are you, followed by judgement. It is important to know that there is no possible way you will ever please everyone in your life. It is easier to just stop trying. Instead, own your power and stand your ground when you have an opinion, when something does not feel right or when you know your value, and embrace it. As women, we are natural peacemakers and caretakers and tend to put others before ourselves. Embracing your value means it is time to put yourself first. If you do not, it is possible you will be treated by others at less than your value and that never ends well. It could mean being taken for granted at your job, being treated less than you deserve in your personal or professional relationships, and it can mean losing your drive and motivation to have the life that you desire and deserve. It is important to remember more than anything, “Your life, your way.” Galit Ventura-Rozen, M.A. is the author of “The Successful Woman’s Mindset,” an award-winning international speaker, Business Performance Expert for executives and entrepreneurs as well as an avid influencer and philanthropist. THE GOODNESS EXPERIENCE PA R T O N E By Janice Wilson The day we were born, there was a promise of hope for each of us to have a life of happiness, fulfillment, beauty, freedom and joy. Everything good that one could desire was held in this spiritual promise. No one was left out. At least that is what our parents told us. So, what happened to the happily ever after? We grew up hoping we could do it all, have it all, be it all. But the real world challenged that rainbow-hued promise. What changed? Why did we hit stumbling blocks? When did everything start falling apart? Each of us has hit a “wall” at one time or another. We scream, cry and ask, “Why me? Why did this happen? How can I get my life back on track?” Sometimes we ignore what has happened and become numb. Often, we get busier and hope the problems go away. We talk to friends, have sleepless nights, self-medicate, flounder and wonder if there is any good left in the world. After a few of these failures, we look for advice and approval from others. We hope they will show us the way. We are told by the experts, “No matter where you have been, what you have been through, what you have, or what you don’t have, that promise you were given at birth is still the truth about life.” Everything will be all right … someday. But, somehow and some way, that someday never comes. If you want to find a way to experience what you want in your life now, not someday, then practicing The Goodness Experience is how you can learn to live with abandon, freedom, fulfillment, joy and the expectation of good. Words don’t teach. Experience is how we learn. When you learn to practice the principles of “goodness,” you will discover there are perfect answers for every problem. There is a foundation of truth and love that we all have. When we acknowledge our goodness, we find freedom. You will discover your true heart and become congruent with love and goodness.

Good is in every moment of life. The Laws of Goodness are always active, supporting and sustaining you. They are the proof that God or Good is present in our lives.” Disappointments and hardships can be angels that move us to discover more Goodness in every circumstance. We are never in a helpless position. At any time, we can awaken to the Good we value about ourselves and others. This is how you find fulfillment. When you look at your problems as opportunities to move forward with love, you will experience your heart’s desires. The choice is always yours. Ask yourself: Will you accept being a victim, or will you have the courage to see the Goodness? Will you allow yourself to overcome fear, loss and grief with love for yourself and see that everything is always working for your GOOD. Will you let go of the anger, the bitterness, the hatred that life’s tragedies have fostered and focus on the beauty of your heart’s desires? Will you allow yourself to come out of the prison of self-pity and quit asking “why me” and begin to explore and receive the answers that the Laws of Goodness give to you? Will you choose to live the life you have always wanted? If that is what you want, the answers lie in the exercises that follow. You will begin to: *Live more deeply *Love more fully *Live more freely

7 WAYS TO ACTIVATE GOODNESS

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

What if? Expand your horizon. Make a list of the most wild, outlandish “what ifs?” Use your imagination and have fun.

I am gratitude. Stand in front of a mirror and acknowledge your Goodness—physically and spiritually. Love yourself and acknowledge your power.

I am value. Think about the people you admire. You are as valuable to this world as anyone in your dreams. You are the treasure, so live it.

I a m h u m i l i t y. Remember the deepest feeling of love you’ve ever felt in your life? A time when your world seemed to be in perfect harmony. Think about one of your underlying fears and dismiss it completely from your mind.

I am beautiful. Express your beauty. When you talk to anyone, say your words with kindness, gentleness, care and compassion. With each thought, see beauty in every motion.

I am love. For 24 hours, stop any fearful, angry or hateful thoughts. If an unloving thought comes to mind or unloving words come out of your mouth, reverse them. Restate the unloving thoughts or words.

I am me. Dance at least once a day, even if it is in your living room by yourself or with your pet. Smile at least 10 times to strangers. In time, you will develop a new attitude and will focus on the Goodness that exists all around you. Until next time ... MONTE SMITH L a s Ve g a s N a t i v e a n d C h a i r E m e r i t u s o f U n i t e d Wa y o f S o u t h e r n N e v a d a ’s Wo m e n ’s L e a d e r s h i p C o u n c i l In a town like Las Vegas, which constantly renews and reinvents itself, it can be uncommon to find someone who remembers what the city looked like back in the days of vintage Vegas. Monte Smith, chair emeritus of United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council, is one of those people. When you ask her what it is like to be one of those few native Las Vegans though, she is quick to correct you. “I frequently run across someone who has lived here since the 1960s, and the first thing we do is swap some ‘do you remember when’ stories,” Monte says. “There are some great shared memories of a much different town, but for us kids, we thought it was just like any other.” She got her first taste of how different Las Vegas was in 1982, when her home in the Huntridge neighborhood was rocked by an explosion. It was the night Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal’s Cadillac was destroyed by a car bomb in the Marie Callender’s parking lot at Sahara Avenue and 6th Street. Thankfully, everyone was fine, but it caused quite a mess. Thinking back on this, Monte muses that “our town has come a long way.” She goes on to explain that Las Vegas has grown past those days, and as in any growing city, residents and leaders work tirelessly to meet the diverse needs of the community, many without praise or recognition. Seeing the generosity and philanthropy in Southern Nevada generates inspiration and creates incredible good in the community. A long way from mob activity and car bombs, right?

(L-R) – Alyssa Mayor, Angel Williams, Lawrel Larsen, Monte Smith, Soraya Aguirre, and Danielle Domnitz

Seeing this positive change and wanting to be part of it led Monte to United Way and the Women’s Leadership Council. “For me, WLC is a microcosm of our diverse, hardworking and generous community,” she explains. Each member brings different perspectives and strengths to the table. “One of our members has said we are greater than the sum of our parts, and I couldn’t agree more!” Every member has their different interests and Monte considers her interest to be one of the most diverse. “I confess, I am a total insurance geek,” she jokes. As the vice president of sales and marketing at Brown & Brown Insurance of Nevada, she is very well informed about the topic. “Business risks and financial responsibilities to society are always changing, and I’ve spent the last 30 years learning about those risks.” She knows how people feel about insurance, though. In fact, she even shared a tip: “A great way to kill a good conversation is to bring up the topic of insurance.” However, she knows how important her work of staying upto-date and informed is for her clients. “I care deeply that

Monte Smith with student in Spread the Word Nevada’s Breakfast with Books program

my clients do everything possible to protect themselves. In my career journey, I have been fortunate to establish rewarding relationships and now call them friends.” Each of these relationships offers her a chance to enjoy her favorite activity: learning. “Every hour presents me with a new opportunity to learn something from a person or a difficult business problem, a never before encountered circumstance or a situation that requires thoughtful resolution,” she says. She feeds her love of learning with seminars and classes on personal and professional growth, teaching how to do something better or smarter. Learning and growing as a person takes a lot of time, but she also enjoys reading and being active outdoors, usually through running, hiking and snow skiing. “These activities provide joy for me, but more than that, they carve time out for loved friends and continue the physical and mental growth I seek with my other favorite activity of learning. They foster thoughtfulness and inspiration.”

DUTCH BROS. COFFEE

COFFEE |

Dutch Bros. Coffee has been around since 1992, but just recently opened in Las Vegas and brought a new and delicious way for our community to caffeinate. Founded by two brothers whose family farm was shut down, they turned to coffee and caffeine addicts everywhere are beyond grateful. The brothers purchased an espresso machine, started giving away drinks to anyone willing to sample and a business was born.

Their keys to success include three main ingredients: speed, quality and service and a firm belief that you can not sacrifice one to achieve another. Each handcrafted drink is made to order, delivered in a timely manner and with a smile. Signature drinks include the Kicker, an Irish cream breve; the Annihilator, a chocolate mac breve; the Caramelizer, a caramel mocha; the chai tea with honey, vanilla and spices; and the 911, an Irish cream breve with an additional six shots. A vast menu showcases other flavor combinations, including: Gummy Bear (kiwi, lime and white chocolate), Tuxedo (white chocolate and dark chocolate), Ninja (white chocolate and crème de menthe), Dream Weaver (hazelnut and white chocolate), a not-so-hot chocolate for the kids, and many more unique options. While they brew an amazing cup of coffee, the company also focuses on giving back. The company has donated over $2 million each year to its local communities and various nonprofits, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This luxurious chardonnay is from the heart of the Russian River Valley; a region known for producing world class chardonnay. A long growing season and cooling coastal breezes help to produce elegant wines with crisp acidity and ripe fruit flavors. Hints of baked apple, pear and melon are followed by spicy notes of toasted oak. Delicious by itself and quite versatile with food. Try Laguna with poached salmon, pasta with cream sauce, light salads and poultry dishes.

R i s a t a M o s c a t o d ’A s t i Most moscato fans are very familiar with Risata and its iconic blue bottle. It is no surprise that this sweet and sparkling stunner has been the No. 1 Moscato d’Asti for years. Fragrant floral aromas are followed by bright flavors of tangerine, white peach and honey. Although the wine is sweet, it is not cloying or heavy. Risata is surprisingly refreshing and beautifully balanced. Say hello to your new spring fling.

Although Rosé has become a year-round favorite, it really seems to bloom in the spring. Yes Way Rosé reveals fresh picked flavors of strawberry, citrus and peach. It is light, dry and extremely refreshing. This food-friendly wine pairs well with cheese, seafood, salads and spicy cuisine. It also pairs perfectly with family and friends, always keep a bottle or two chilled in the fridge.

Folly of the Beast Pinot Noir This wine takes its name from the infamous Moby Dick quote, “For there is no folly of the beast of the earth that is not infinitely outdone by the madness of men.” A certain amount of skill and determination is essential to produce a pinot of this quality and Folly of the Beast is proof that a little madness pays off. Concentrated flavors of red fruit and sweet spice are followed by balanced acidity and a silky finish. One hundred percent pinot noir aged in 33% new French oak for 12 months.

B a r e f o o t o n Ta p Unless you have been living under a rock, you are probably familiar with Barefoot wines. They have recently introduced Barefoot on Tap. The same great quality wine is now available in three-liter boxes. One box is equal to four 750ml bottles. It fits conveniently in the refrigerator and stays fresh for 30 days. Tip: Think “outside the box” this Valentine’s Day. In lieu of chocolates, give your sweetheart a box of Barefoot. Fall in love with all six delicious varietals.

LOVE

Look Beyond Simply Falling When it Comes to Love By Jennifer Battisti

While steeped in the dopamine ether of new love, it can be easy to get swept up by the intensity of chemistry and connection. New love is wildly exhilarating. You forget to eat, you stare out windows with a goofy grin on your face. Your partner is every song on the radio. You are full of energy and positivity. New love is cunning and powerfully biological. This is where reason and experience are helpful. Loving a person’s soul and loving a person’s circumstances are two very different things. Relationships are a lot like a wishbone that a couple attempts to split, but what sometimes happens is someone gets the bigger portion. Someone needs more support, more healing, more assurance that they will not be rejected. And then sometimes the other person, without realizing it, takes less of the wishbone. They decide to need less. To speak their needs less. To compromise their values. The first problem with this is two broken people do not make a whole person. The second problem is people cannot fix other people. They can support and influence with their kindness and empathy. They can show by example what self-care looks like, but healing one’s soul is an inside job. The danger in entering a relationship with someone who is not ready to be in a relationship is that we run the risk of depleting our own energy supply to assist with theirs. If neither party is ready, then it’s double the danger as both will be deluded into the idea they can “save” each other. I think as women we can still be influenced by the gendered expectation to be nurturing caregivers. This can be amplified if we are still healing from a loss or have a void that our now grown children used to fill. We may confuse love with pity. We may mistake a red flag for a matador cape and use it as a way to prove our altruism, or worse, unconsciously make another dependent on us to secure we will not be abandoned. I know, this sounds awful! But wait, can we go back to the gooey, magnetic new love feeling, which has a way of distracting us from our actual ideals for a partner and a partnership? It can be tempting to just fall in love, to bend and change and accommodate for love. I have been a victim to the spell of neurotransmitters, the thrill of admiration. But we break a different kind of wishbone within ourselves when we do not speak clearly our expectations in a relationship. Many of us are driven, successful, confident women, but put a wounded potential partner in front of us and we will dim our lights to feed their egos. That wishbone is our source, our integrity and it is precious. It is likely the very thing that attracted them to us. The risk is, of course, having to walk away from a relationship or potential one that does not serve us. This is a leap of faith. Communicating about your intentions and your needs feels like a buzzkill in the delirium of new love, but what it can build is the foundation for the rest of a healthy partnership. Lean into the discomfort of those uncomfortable but crucial conversations. It is much more difficult to dismantle a toxic relationship later, and the one relationship we must work on for the rest of our lives, is the one with ourselves. It is braver to stand in love, in truth, than to simply fall.

Introducing

LUMIFY A New Solution for Whiter Eyes By Dr. Cynthia Payne

TM

Many people are concerned with how red their eyes appear. They want to make a more positive impression when they see someone by having a more cosmetically white eye. Making eye contact when we first see someone creates a basis for intimacy, trust and a way for someone to express how they feel by squinting or opening the eyelids or with brow movement. Redness of the sclera (the white part of the eye) can occur for many reasons. A few of the most common reasons are dryness, allergies, or an overpopulation of bacterial or mites in the eyelashes. Dryness is very common here in the Las Vegas desert climate. Sometimes simply drinking more water for better hydration will improve dry eye and associated redness of the eye. Women have more of a problem with dry eye as they age due to the hormonal changes that occur. Certain diseases, especially inflammatory diseases, increase dryness or redness of the sclera. Many medications are also associated with an increase in dry eye. Allergy eyes are red, puffy and itchy. A bacterial or mite infestation of the eyelids will typically be associated with red eyes, red eyelid margins and scaly flakes at the base of the eyelashes. Bacterial or viral infections of the eye (pink eye) are some other causes of a red sclera. The first step in treating red eyes is to have a comprehensive eye exam with an eye doctor (an optometrist or ophthalmologist) to determine the cause of the redness and the appropriate course of treatment. For dry eye, artificial tears or other dry-eye therapies may be required. An antibiotic may be prescribed for a bacterial infection or allergy eye drops for an allergy-based red eye. If the eyelids are infected, proper hygiene with lid scrubs and a prescription drug may be utilized. An eye exam is required to assess if there is an underlying pathological cause for the redness of the sclera. To cosmetically improve the appearance of a mildly red eye, there is a new eye drop available without prescription to make our eyes look whiter. It is called Lumify and only needs to be used just once every eight hours to have a long-lasting effect on the sclera without the “rebound redness” that we often see with the frequent use of popular name-brand eye drops. It also works more quickly than older “get-the-red-out” eyedrops. Lumify whitens the eye in about one minute. Lumify is available without prescription at all major drug stores. The contents of this article do not constitute medical advice. Please see an eye doctor for any eye conditions or concerns for appropriate care. Cynthia Payne, OD accepts appointments for eye exams at Trendsetter Eyewear, 1225 S. Fort Apache Rd., Ste. 145, Las Vegas, NV 89117. Call 702.479.5222.

The Art

OF THE ELEVATOR PITCH I t I s N o t J u s t W h a t Yo u S a y, I t I s H o w Yo u S a y I t By Scott deMoulin and Dallyce Brisbin Jim Carey once said, “The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is.” The ability to communicate effectively and motivate someone to continue connecting with you is one of the most important skills you can master. Learning how to impress with less, communicate with clarity and become more engaging in your interactions will significantly influence your level of success in business and in life. In today’s fast-paced, sound-bite world, the options for connecting continue to expand, while people’s time and attention spans continue to shrink. Now more than ever, your ability to make a memorable and meaningful first impression is essential. In business, opportunities for meeting new prospects in person

are greater than ever, especially here in Las Vegas where we host more than 42 million visitors each year, in addition to the 2 million local residents. Communicating in a succinct and captivating way requires both strategy and practice. One such strategy is being able to wow someone when they ask what you do. This can be accomplished by learning to deliver a brief, but compelling, synopsis known as the elevator pitch. The idea is to effectively pitch yourself in the time it takes to ride a few floors in an elevator. An effective elevator pitch is one that goes beyond the one-word answer but does not try to give a dissertation either. It is a high-level primer designed just to spark enough interest in the recipient so that they want to know more.

First, let’s look at some examples of what not to say when asked, “What do you do?”

When networking or socializing: “I’m a realtor.” (or insurance agent, chiropractor, coach, consultant)

You have done little to create interest or demonstrate how you are unique, and your listener may have a negative assumption or reference of others with similar titles. There are several different styles of elevator pitches. One style we find to be highly effective and engaging is to begin by responding with a question such as “Do you know how” … or “Did you know ...” followed by, “What I do is …” Here is an example of what you can say when asked, “What do you do?” “Did you know that people who attempt to sell their home themselves take an average of 38 days longer, at an average price of $18,000 less and they increase their odds of a lawsuit?” “What I do is use an exclusive marketing plan I created to eliminate stress by selling your home faster, for more money, all while shielding you from the headaches in dealing with buyers or lawsuits.” To achieve positive results, you need to know what to say, how to say it and the best order or syntax for delivering your message. An elevator pitch can also be a powerful sales tool in situations such as working a trade show booth or in direct sales.

Here are some examples of what not to say in a sales opportunity:

“I help you lose weight … sell your house … make more money … get out of pain … improve your relationship … grow your business … be happier.” It is important to refrain from leading with your solution before you have identified a potential problem or need your prospect might have. This can position you as pushy, needy or a “typical salesperson” with “commission breath.”

Here are some examples of what you can say in a sales opportunity: “Did you know over 70 percent of the U.S. population is overweight, with 32 percent classified as obese? Even those who think they are healthy can experience challenges from toxins in their diet or environments they are not even aware of.” “What we do is help you achieve your ideal weight without yo-yo dieting, while you cleanse and eliminate the toxins in your system.” When you share the problem you solve first, you cause your listener to salivate for an answer prior to sharing your solution. People make buying decisions with emotion and justify them with logic.

Communicating in a succinct and captivating way requires both strategy and practice.

Contrary to what most people believe, it is not what you say that is most important. The key is that the recipient interprets what you say in the way you intend. People do not buy a product or service just because of what it does or how it works. They buy the feeling that you, or your product or service, give them. Successful business and sales people focus more on the feeling you leave them with, beginning with your first interaction. People want to do business with people they trust. If your prospect perceives you as credible, which is made up of knowledge and trust, they are less likely to push back or object and more likely to say yes to your offer or opportunity. When you are effective and engaging in your first interaction with someone, the door to a world of potential new connections and opportunities opens. Your communication ability is one of the most important skills to develop. Spending time crafting and mastering your elevator pitch is one strategy that can help you become more effective with networking and direct sales scenarios. d r a d o G LEEANN

Finding Love Fulfilled More Than Just Her Heart By Jennifer Florendo

And they lived happily ever after … while that may be a strange way to begin a story, one can easily imagine that is the way the story pans out for LeeAnn and Michael Godard. Both come from humble and checkered upbringings, yet the couple has shared a longing for that “white picket fence” life and are bringing that to reality today. LeeAnn was born in Colorado Springs, CO to a single mom, as her biological father left before her birth. With two young babies and no additional support, LeeAnn and her family moved to Louisiana to live with her grandmother. “I didn’t have much of a stable life, but my mother always did the best she could with what we had,” said LeeAnn. The move to Louisiana brought more change and unpredictability into LeeAnn’s life, from a baby sister to her mother enlisting in the Army and the later physical abuse to her mother, which often trickled down to LeeAnn and her sisters. “One particular night in 1980, things got completely out of control. I witnessed, along with my sisters, my mother in the fight of her life,” she says describing a physical encounter between her mom and her stepfather. “He left her for dead and we never saw him since. After weeks in the hospital, my mother got back on her feet, now as a single mom.” More change came the following year when LeeAnn’s mother received military orders for a deployment in Athens, Greece and the entire family, including a new stepfather, started out on a new adventure. “I had an absolutely incredible experience while living there. I enrolled in a GreekAmerican school, learned the language and a new world. It was probably the happiest our family had been in a long time,” she said. Four years later, at the age of 12, LeeAnn returned to the United States, where her mother was stationed in Fort Huachuca, AZ. Her excitement to return to an American civilian school was quickly crushed on her first day. “On my very first day, I got into a fight. It was awful. There were hordes of students gathering around my locker to see ‘the new girl from Greece,’” she recalls. “It was a battle literally almost every day for months. It got so bad I thought about just taking my own life and getting all of the misery over with.” Her family moved to another town where she enrolled into a different school and, except for typical teenage rebellion, life seemed to be moving in the right direction, until it wasn’t. Her mother began a tough struggle

with alcohol dependency and, at the age of 17, LeeAnn received power of attorney over her younger sister, after her older sister moved out of state. This forced her to grow up quickly; she eventually dropped out of high school to work odd jobs in order to support them. There was no way to tell at the moment that this unfortunate circumstance would prove to be a blessing later in life. Her mother entered Alcoholics Anonymous and met Nils, whom she later married and today are the solid parental structure LeeAnn has always wanted. “They both are sober today for more than 25 years. They both have been my rock since then and I have the mom and dad I’ve always wanted. Although Nils is considered my stepfather, he is the only man who is my dad,” she said. “All families struggle through good times and in bad, and I feel it is truly those situations that bring people together, in most cases.” She gained strength from the challenges experienced earlier in her life, which became a trait that bonded LeeAnn and Michael later. At the age of 20, LeeAnn got pregnant and had her son, which got her thinking about the future more than ever. “I realized I was going nowhere fast, being a high school dropout and a young mother. Although my son’s father was a hard worker and a good man, we just kind of grew apart,” she said. LeeAnn packed up and moved to Tucson, AZ where she worked for a florist and at a hotel to support her family. She did not recognize it at the time but working behind the front desk at a hotel would land her in a new career. She moved into the sales and marketing department, where she negotiated contracts for conventions and groups, and she excelled. “I continued to make my mark and move up the ranks of various hotel chains. I was good, and I knew it. I started to get my confidence back and was recruited to assist with opening my first hotel as senior sales manager in 2006 and then another in 2011 as director of sales and marketing,” she said. She had a long and successful career starting at the bottom and working her way up, owning a home, cars and living off a six-figure salary when her sister suggested that she find someone. “My sister, Terri, said all I do is work,” said LeeAnn. “She signed me up for this dating app.” Spring 2019 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

At the same time, in Las Vegas, Michael Godard’s daughter was beginning to question what he was going to do with the rest of his life. She filled out the profile for her dad and was luckily matched up with LeeAnn. “We started chatting in February 2016 and started sending videos back and forth to get to know each other and discovered how much we truly have in common and that our moral compass seemed to be pointing in the same direction,” LeeAnn said. She knew right away they had a deep connection, but she was not going to make it easy for Michael, even as he attempted to pull all the stops to impress her. LeeAnn came to Las Vegas for a sales and marketing convention and decided to meet Michael face-to-face for the first time. She wanted to make sure that they got to know each other organically and made the most of her first visit to Las Vegas to meet him. “I said to Michael, ‘I will meet you for one drink. If I like you, we will go on another date. If not, we will be friends,’” said LeeAnn. She recalls their first date, when Michael said he would pick her up at a Strip property valet. “He told me what car to look for … and I waited and waited … and eventually saw it drive by without stopping” said LeeAnn. Michael shares his side of the story, “I was all sorts of confident until I pulled in and saw her and I just could not bring myself to stop, so I kept driving,” he said. He kept driving, not because LeeAnn did not look as stunning in person as she did in her online profile photos … she did, but Michael knew in that instant this is the girl for him and needed a moment to compose himself, while LeeAnn thought that she was being stood up. Michael came back around, owned up to his nerves as she got into the car, “I said that I needed to get this out of the way now and I kissed her,” said Michael. While they would like to say, “The rest is history …,” that would downplay what LeeAnn is contributing to our community today. For LeeAnn, something felt different as well. What she did not know in that moment was that meeting Michael would change her life in many ways. “From the moment we met it was love at first sight for both of us. Although this is not the first relationship for either of us, I still feel deeply in my heart that had I not gone through the struggles with past relationships, I cannot appreciate the one that I’m in now,” she said.

She continues, “I see it as we have two different roles. Michael enjoys being the macho breadwinner, but you know what, I am the nurturer, I am the person who takes care of his schedule, organizing appearances, packing and more. I am the person who would tell him he is working too hard and to take a break, I am the person who loves his daughters as much as I love my own child, as he does mine.” While Michael’s career comes with bright lights, big names and responsibilities, LeeAnn remains focused on putting quality into the down time they have, while not diminishing the opportunities they have been given. “We travel so much that one of the most enjoyable things for us is just to have some relaxation at home because we work so hard,” she says. “At the same time, we get to see the entire world and that is one of the things I truly enjoy. The two of us could go to someplace we have never been before and spend an extra day or two. We enjoy each other’s company and truly enjoy other people and experiencing other cultures.” There is also a loving and playful aura about the couple. When we sat down to do the interview for this story, the laughs never stopped, and the duo easily finished each other’s sentences. “He has a great sense of humor, which makes me very happy … I am constantly harassing him,” LeeAnn says lovingly. Although she is happily married, maintaining a sense of self and independence is important for LeeAnn. “I’ve always enjoyed taking care of other people, and giving back to my community,” said LeeAnn. She also knows that as such a giving person, having balance is just as important. “I also want to, at least for my own sense of confidence, have a sense of independence," she says. “I feel like my independence means everything to me.”

From the moment we met it was love at first sight for both of us. Although this is not the first relationship for either of us, I still feel deeply in my heart that had I not gone through the struggles with past relationships, I cannot appreciate the one that I’m in now.

The past struggles in life and relationships are one of the traits that bond LeeAnn and Michael so closely. Yet, they still feel like this is too good to be true and that someone is going to pull the rug out from them at any time. When LeeAnn met Michael, she was looking for someone who not only complemented her, but also appreciated her values. She found both. If there is a quality one seems to be lacking, the other can easily make up for it. It is apparent in the ways they speak about each other. Once they knew that this was the relationship for them, LeeAnn had some decisions to make about what would be next for her. Michael’s career as an artist keeps him busy with projects, frequent travel and appearances. For LeeAnn, she would much rather lay low and stay behind the scenes. “I am someone who would rather stay on the down low. I have never liked attention, I still do not like attention, but it is something that I am happy to adapt to in our marriage,” she said. While the adjustment has not always been easy, it has been worth it. “It has been a little bit of a strain at times, but at the same time, we love each other so much and the way that we decided to handle this is as a team,” says LeeAnn.

While it may seem to some that LeeAnn gave up a career to be a wife caring for her husband’s busy schedule and needs, it could not be more opposite. Prior to meeting Michael, LeeAnn worked with multiple nonprofits in Arizona along with serving on the board of the Military Affairs Committee and as an honorary commander for the 755th Operations Support Squadron in Tucson. Since meeting Michael, a door opened for LeeAnn to use that passion in a way that was not possible before. “This has given me the opportunity to be a bigger part of raising money for: St. Jude's; the NSPCA, which is a no-kill animal shelter; Wounded Warriors, which are those suffering from PTSD and more.” Giving back to the community is a wonderful part of their lives together, but one of the ways they give back to society begins right at home with their families. Uniting in marriage meant blending two families together, which they seem to have done seamlessly. “Today, it is not unusual to be Story continued on page 57

in a second or third marriage and be part of a blended family. We share an equal love of our children and have made that a priority, and it has worked out extremely well for us. I am not saying that it has not had some obstacles, but overall it has been wonderful,” she says. Michael came into the marriage with two young daughters, in addition to two older daughters, one of whom he lost to brain cancer at age 16. LeeAnn brings a son into the marriage. “Michael now has the son he’s always wanted, and I have two little girls that I never had the chance to have myself. The love this family creates makes it so amazing and makes us feel so alive,” said LeeAnn. While she may not have given birth to his little girls, they are the little girls she has always dreamt of having. “All I truly want is to have a positive impact on the girls. I want to help them learn to be happy and our relationship be a marker of how relationships should be when you are truly in love.” Both LeeAnn and Michael recognize how important their past is when creating a new future for their children. Her childhood lacked a sense of security, stability, and being surrounded by unconditional love. Even with demanding schedules, giving their kids a better life than they had experienced growing up is a top priority for the couple. She envisions this grueling schedule will last a few more years before they are able to slow down and enjoy their family time together even more. “I will tell you this, I cannot wait to be a grandmother, and I am so looking forward to the day when my son or my daughters have babies. That is one future plan,” she says excitedly. Like many women, LeeAnn acknowledges that there are daily challenges in finding that balance many of us crave. “Finding balance is a difficult issue. First and foremost, you must have your priorities in order and understand that in order to make things work, there does have to be some sort of balance,” said LeeAnn. She states that, for her, she is Michael’s wife, which means that she supports him and all his endeavors, from preparing their touring schedule, to making sure he is prepared for his shows across the world. It can be challenging at times, as sometimes shows run back to back with no downtime. “But I also try and find a balance because I know my husband well enough to know he will work himself to death if he is allowed to. That is where I come in and say, ‘Honey, enough is enough.’”

LeeAnn and Michael celebrating the birthday of one of Michael's fans, Cashel

LeeAnn and Michael have had their fair share of challenges in their lives but know that they are in a position now where they can help so many through their status. They share the story of Michael’s daughter Paige, whom they lost to brain cancer at the age of 16, to many who are in similar situations within their own families as a way of having hope. “We have met so many people who open their hearts to us, but do not have the means to raise all of the money that may be needed for their situation,” she continued. “So many fans and clients have supported us through Michael’s art,” says LeeAnn. “We are connected with so many incredible people and resources that if someone needs anything, I can call some of our friends and say, ‘Hey listen … we know somebody who is suffering from a particular disease and we would love for you to help us contribute …’ and we pool our resources together and get these families the help they need.” LeeAnn and Michael shared the story of a friend whose daughter was hospitalized. They reached out to Michael to see if he can cheer their daughter up with a phone call. “He said, ‘I can do even better than that’ and placed a few calls to other Strip headliners and friends. Before we knew it, the girl had get-well messages from Carrot Top, Criss Angel and more,” said LeeAnn. Once their daughter recovered, LeeAnn and Michael invited the family to Las Vegas, where the daughter was able to meet her favorite performer, Criss Angel. “We are able to do this because we have the resources. We have the support, the love, the friendships and the connections. It is not just an opportunity for us to give back, we feel it is our obligation to our community to help,” said LeeAnn. And that is how happily ever after started for two strangers who met online, fell in love and made a commitment to not only themselves, but their community to make a difference. Angel Kiss (left)

Never Give Up (above)

On the 10th Anniversary of the passing of my angel, Paige, who left this world at the young age of 16 to be with other angels, I wanted to create something to convey her innocence, sweetness and beautiful spirit. This painting reflects all those things I love about her and just as her memory is eternal, my wish is that this painting will continue to touch the heart of each person who sees it.

Remember that cancer is just a chapter in your life, never your whole story. Once you become fearless, your life becomes limitless. Giving up is not an option. At first glance, the lemon seems a bit overwhelmed, but the shadow shows the lemon’s true nature and the twist in the glass morphs into a cancer symbol. This painting is about the courage of all of those that join the fight against cancer.

Stop FOR LOVE

R e p r i o r i t i z i n g Yo u r T i m e t o R e c o n n e c t w i t h Yo u r S i g n i f i c a n t O t h e r By Dr. Tiger Devore

The fairy tale starts out like this: we are attracted, we meet, we date, we fall in love, and we start making a life together. Then, the reality hits: we set goals, we work hard, we have kids, we have no time to remember to connect emotionally and sexually with our beloved partner. Intimacy and sexuality often suffer; we might take less care of our bodies, gain some weight, lose our sense of being sexy, even to ourselves. Does this sound like you … and everyone you know? Even with the most in-love couples I work with, remembering to set time aside for closeness and intimacy seems to be the last place where precious time gets prioritized. I've learned that as powerful as a therapist’s suggestions may be, patients often simply resist. I cannot just tell a couple looking to regain their lost romance that they need to put more time aside for sex and intimacy and then it will instantly happen in their daily lives. Like so many other things we want to commit to because they are good for us, we will not do it unless there is some other motivator put into the mix, even though regaining intimacy really ought to be worth it. The same goes for looking and feeling better. We know that in order to do so, we must give up fatty food, drinking too much wine and start getting some exercise, but how many people do all that so easily? It is about creating a habit: changing how we think about our schedule, making a commitment to something we have decided to make a priority. So how do we trick ourselves into making a change? We can sometimes do this by creating a new tradition. This season, how about putting the word out to friends and family that you and your significant other are planning a getaway for a week or weekend? Recruit babysitters, if necessary, but start arranging the resources for you to be able to enjoy some time together without the distractions of all the unopened mail, the laptop, or the cell phone that are always within your peripheral vision at home, cueing you to check that text or email you looked at five minutes ago. This weekend away is about a romantic setting, a comfortable room, easy access to food and drink, and time with just you and your loved one to get reacquainted. No distractions and very little planned other than to be with each other. Sounds scary, right? You will both have to face how unfamiliar you are with playing with your significant other this way since you have probably been avoiding it for a few years now. It would be easier to get busy sightseeing, but that is not the point of this. I must press patients to do some preplanning to include what they would like to have in their life with their partner, the feeling they used to have, the familiarity of their partner’s body they have forgotten, the appreciation that made taking time so easy when they first met. I will also ask that the couple do some shopping together. Buy some lingerie and bring along the lubricants or other supplies that make intimate contact more fun. Take the opportunity for each of you to bring along something new that your partner might not know that you would like to try out. This experience should be playful and celebratory. And … who knows … If the romantic weekend works out, this may be something you will make happen every couple of months, instead of once a year.

MESS

Decluttering and Deep Cleaning Bring About a Sense Of Renewal, Just in Time for Spring By Marty Basher Most of us have stress in our lives, it is pretty common. So, it is important that we do what we can to limit unnecessary stress, such as messy environments. A messy desk, car or house can really impede your ability to function at your optimal capacity. Take the time you need to get rid of stuff or put things in their places. There is plenty to be stressed out over—don’t let messiness be one of them. Cleaning up a messy environment gives a real sense of accomplishment. So many things we do today never really have an end date and do not provide a measurable point to stop and say, “job well done.” Cleaning your home, for instance, can give you that “job well done” feeling. It does not take too long, and the finished product is a nice, tidy living space that will give you a “well done” pat on the back.

Spring 2019 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

Clutter can be unhealthy. A lot of clutter may include things that are toxic, chemical laden or simply just dust-collecting devices. Cleaning out things that you will not use, and probably do not need, can reduce dust, mold and other airborne irritants. Simply cleaning up and decluttering can have a huge impact on the quality of air that you breathe in your home. Clutter is distracting. A cluttered home can be especially distracting, taking your eye and mind off tasks you want to work on. Clutter has been shown to reduce focus in most adults. Trying to concentrate or complete a task in a room that is full of clutter and distractions can increase the time to completion quite significantly. It just might be that your cluttered home is the reason you keep losing things and spend extra time looking for them.

If your clutter is on a larger scale, you may need to ease into the idea of decluttering. Sometimes, the problem with decluttering is the emotional attachment we feel to all of our stuff. If this describes you, then start with this one tip: Begin by decluttering the least emotional items. Take it one room at a time and first remove items with little or no emotional value. Before you know it, you will be moving on to more items and soon be clutter free.

Organized and decluttered closets are one surefire way to a more organized life. You will save time and energy by not having to painstakingly piece outfits together every morning or search for lost items. Plus, your mind will feel decluttered knowing that behind your closet and cabinet doors, everything is laid out exactly as you need it to be.

Here are a few ways to accomplish getting your closets into shape:

1

A hanging shoe organizer is not just for shoes. Attach a clear shoe organizer with pockets to the door of your clothes or linen closet. In a closet, use it to store socks, gloves, swimsuits, scarves, ties and more. For the linen closet, store cleaning products, lost socks, a roll of garbage bags, sponges and scrub brushes.

2

With just a few minutes of your time, your clothes closet can be organized and coded to make getting dressed a breeze—it does not matter whether your closet is big or small. Start by categorizing all the shirts. Once pulled together, file them by short sleeve and long sleeved, then match up by color. Next, do the same with pants and skirts. Now, when it is time to get dressed, you can simply look for a shirt by sleeve length and color. Then you can quickly pair it with a skirt or pants of choice. No more sorting through racks of clothes looking for a missing item stuck between two totally unrelated things.

3

If you are dealing with a small closet, think outside the box and create more space by building vertically. Add storage cubes on top of a shelf. Add a second hanging bar if you need more space to hang clothes. Storage bins fit nicely under hanging clothes rods to store off-season clothes.

4

One of the easiest ways to store belts and scarves is by hanging them from shower curtain rings. They are inexpensive, come in big packs and perfectly hold those items that may not have another place to go. Simply snap the ring into place on your closet rod and it is ready to go. The Best of

BOTH WORLDS Thriving in My Role as Aunty Before Mommy By Jan Tanaka “When are you going to have kids of your own?” My husband and I receive this often as a substitute for “Hello” from friends and family. It’s not that we do not want children, or that we are not trying. It just has not happened. Yet. And at 38 years old, others worry on my behalf that I will never be a mother. The truth is, I have never really worried about it myself. I would love for us to have a child of our own, but it is not a requirement for me to enjoy my life. And for now, I hold the title of “Aunty,” which is a greatly underrated, yet deeply rewarding, role for non-moms to play. I get to be the best “Aunty Jan” I can be to my four nephews, three nieces and my godchildren. I get to pick them up from school, teach them new things, watch movies during sleepovers and take them on adventures. We get to eat junk food, stay up late and run around acting crazy. All while still ensuring their teeth are brushed, their homework is complete and that we sneak a vegetable or two into their meals. For as long as I can remember, my own aunt played a crucial part in my life. She helped to cover our school expenses. She calls us on holidays and birthdays. She even stood in at my wedding when my mother was unable to attend. My aunt has always loved us like her own, and I used to wonder how she could love me so much. Now, as an aunt myself, I understand. Raising a child is not easy. There is so much to worry about, so much to do. Motherhood can take over and my role as aunt supports my sister in many of those responsibilities. I can help give her a break to come back to herself. My role gives the kids a different kind of support. They come to us when they are feeling hurt or sad, happy or excited. They share with us their milestones. Being an aunt also prepares me for motherhood. My husband and I are often called “weekend parents” because every weekend the kids sleep over. They have their own rules and routines at our house. And because, as their aunt and not their mother, I don’t see them every single day, it makes these times just a little more special. I have the best of both worlds: I get to love these kids hard, much like my aunt loved me. And just as I loved her back, they love me fiercely in return. I get all the perks of being a part of raising them. But for now, at least, I still have my personal non-mom freedom. When or if I ever have children of my own remains to be seen. The love I receive from the children already in my life is genuine, unconditional and immensely gratifying. I count myself blessed beyond words to be their Aunty.

LISA FERRELL I love to inspire women to step out and just do it; conquer whatever is holding them back and to reach their goals, whether it is becoming a better speaker, leader, influencer or taking on that big, scary task they always meant to accomplish but didn’t quite have the courage to face. I have a no-nonsense approach; I am an honest and authentic tell it like it is girl who encourages people to face their fears head-on and understand that being uncomfortable is a cornerstone to the best growth.

affiliations and business have allowed me to help a vast array of women who are craving guidance, leadership and that safe place to tell the truth.

Last year I realized I was playing too small. I had a brainstorm to open up space for a small, close group of women to come and share intimate matters in what I call, “Women & Conversations.” It starts with an organic, powerful question, no agenda and the room elevates very quickly.

Most women feel that they have had to live up to certain standards or roles someone told them to play, and they are afraid to stray from these confines. I call this predicament FIMAGE, or “fear of image.” I help them get beyond their FIMAGE to see who they really are at their very core.

So far, every 90-minute conversation has created breakthroughs and “ah-ha moments” cracking open the hearts for women to start the healing process. My associations,

I have been mentoring women in Las Vegas for the last 15 years. I take leadership seriously and always appreciate masterminding with great leaders who inspire, support and hold

So many of us live our lives from the past, which stalls our present and distorts our future perspective. Through committed leadership, I help women reshape their current and future worlds by not staying stuck in what happened to them—the event, the tragedy, the unthinkable.

me accountable. My desire to continue growing my leadership works on all sides. It offers me CANEE “constant and neverending evolution” from a life and leadership perspective. I know that my work in this world is with women on a worldwide level. I love the thought of bringing women together and am committed to growing and connecting with them. Would you like to drop your baggage and set yourself free with a proactive vision for your life and CANEE? Do you know what you want and what you love? Are you playing too small? My passion and love is closing win-win deals, mentoring and being a difference maker in the lives of others. Stay tuned for my first Advance (retreat) coming in the fall of 2019. LINDA SMITH Accomplished philanthropist and advocate for people with disabilities, Linda Smith, most well known for her role as senior executive vice president at Opportunity Village, has made her mark in the world of charitable organizations, having raised almost half a billion dollars in her time there and millions more for nonprofits worldwide. In 2016, after years of building worldclass programs, state-of-the-art campuses and earning international recognition for Opportunity Village, Linda decided it was time to go out on top and resigned from her position. “I had an absolutely terrific time at OV. When I left … not having to work the 12hour days that I did for 38 years, I had time to actually think about writing the book my friends had been encouraging me to write,” said Linda. Linda comes from a dynamic past that includes moving from England to Canada, going from homeless to a self-taught dancer/ actress/model, a marriage to a Las Vegas Strip performer, living life in both Canada and the U.S., and eventually becoming a fundraising legend. Her memoir, “Unwanted,”

launches in March and chronicles her life story of perseverance, survival and success. While on a plane to Canada at eight months pregnant, the trajectory of Linda’s life was changed: an hour into her flight, she went into labor with her son Christopher who rerouted all her life’s plans. Two hours after landing, Christopher Smith was born with Down syndrome, something that Linda had never expected. “I just knew I was going to have a healthy baby and here came a Down syndrome baby. It changed my life, starting me on a lifelong journey to fight for his rights.” Bringing Christopher into the United States in the 1970s was full of challenges, including him being labeled as an “undesirable alien” by immigration officials at 18 months old. That label led to her storied career in disability activism and ultimately creating a foundation in his honor. The Christopher Smith Foundation was created to provide support and resources to both families and caregivers. “There is a caregiving crisis in the U.S. with 27 million people in need of long-term care. It is hard to find people to look after those with disabilities. Not just disabilities, but seniors also,” said Linda in speaking of our community.

Leaving Opportunity Village gave Linda the opportunity to pursue finishing her book and helping more people and organizations in the world through her consulting business and foundation. Linda’s role within our community has made an everlasting mark, yet it was one that she would never have wished upon herself. “Were it not for the birth of Christopher, I would probably just be an old dancer. Instead, he changed my life and rocked my world. I feel very privileged to be the mother of Chris, a child, whom at first, I would have given anything to avoid having. It has been an amazing journey, one I would not change.” The proceeds from Linda’s book will benefit The Christopher Smith Foundation, which helps families and caregivers in our community to receive respite care, volunteer resources and education for those interested in becoming caregivers. Dr. Jennifer

BAYNOSA

BREAKING TRADITION

By Paul Harasim

Dr. Jennifer Baynosa often heard as a child that one day she would find a nice man, fall in love, get married and have a family. Taking care of her children and her husband, preparing their meals and washing their clothes was the future that would be hers. “I grew up in a conservative Hispanic family,” says Baynosa, today an associate professor of breast oncology surgery at the UNLV School of Medicine, as well as the general surgery residency program director. “Women were basically seen as caregivers in that culture.” However, her mother saw a future where there would be more options for Baynosa and her sister. “She wanted us to be able to stand on our own two feet, not to just depend on a man,” says Baynosa, whose father, an elementary school teacher, helped instill a love for learning in his daughters. If she wanted to be a traditional homemaker and stay-athome mom, that was fine, Baynosa’s mom said, but it should be her choice. That philosophy is one that Baynosa holds dear today. “I was lucky to have a mother like that, who believed you should be able to do whatever you want to do in life” Baynosa says. “It is what I believe as well.” At the University of California San Diego, Baynosa was an honor student. While at the USC medical school, she initially thought she’d go into pediatrics like her older sister. But she realized she appreciated treating adults who could better explain what was troubling them. She decided to do a residency in general surgery because she liked the fact that most surgery “dealt with problems you can fix. If I take someone’s bad gallbladder out, I have fixed the problem.” After a general surgery residency at the University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine, where she met the man who

would become her husband, she completed a breast surgery fellowship at Stanford University. It turned out working with a team of doctors to help a woman overcome breast cancer gave her immense satisfaction. Medical, surgical and radiation oncologists working together, she says, goes a long way toward helping women beat breast cancer. Today, Baynosa is happily married to Dr. Richard Baynosa, the chief and program director of the division of plastic surgery at the UNLV School of Medicine. They have two girls in elementary school. Her eldest, an 8-year-old, talks of becoming a teacher.

I was lucky to have a mother like that, who believed you should be able to do whatever you want to do in life. There are times when Baynosa and her husband, who does breast reconstruction surgery, are in the operating room together. As she finishes up a double mastectomy, for example, he will begin his work. “It’s nice to work as a team together,” she says. Baynosa says she’s proud that the UNLV School of Medicine has women in teaching roles to help young women wrestling with questions about family and their professional lives. They act as important mentors, she says, for female students. “I’m super excited to be part of the new UNLV School of Medicine,” she says. “The vision of Dr. Barbara Atkinson (founding dean of the school), of having a true academic medical center in Las Vegas so people don’t have to leave town for quality health care is one that I share. We want to be a center that can take care of all the health needs of the city’s population.”

Introduced in 2018, it is a dream on the eyes. This, affectionately, is the caviar part. Surrounded by opulent leather and optional wood trim, the luxurious isolation for the outside is simply incredible. For those wishing for greener faire, there is optional premium textile seating surfaces and other renewable finishes. On the mud side, you can expect as standard equipment the best off-road capability in its class with optional air height adjustable suspension and the system known as Terrain Response (standard), which essentially adapts itself to conquer the harshest road conditions imaginable. The standard InControl Touch Pro Duo is a two-screen infotainment system. It is made up of an upper screen where the most important data is available to the driver, such as navigation, cell phone, and music source. REBRANDING AT ANY STAGE C r e a t e Yo u r O w n U n i q u e S t y l e a n d N i c h e t o S t a n d O u t By Jodi Friedman

As a real estate broker in Las Vegas, I enjoyed a certain amount of satisfaction working with buyers and sellers for more than 30 years. Real estate agents tend to brand themselves with their company’s values through education, determination and consistent tried-and-true systems. Marketing is meant to get the product known, which, in reality, is you. You are the product; selling your wisdom, knowledge and ability to get things done with the least amount of stress in the shortest amount of time for the client. Branding, then, is really about your reputation and how the public sees you. Back in the 90s and early 2000s, I remember being dazzled by agents who utilized billboards to get themselves in front of the public eye. That was unique and different in those days, to say the least. It helped them create instant recognition, and over time the public would form an opinion of whether their services merited their image … or if they did not. My career took a fork in the road when I realized that I was ready to step fully into my purpose of sharing alternative and holistic work, so I decided to receive referrals for clients and stop personally selling real estate nearly two years ago. To move into a new career in holistic health and wellbeing in my 50s, a special type of branding was desired to become known. With a small private practice of reiki healing and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) coaching, not many people knew that side of me. They also had no idea that I coached women to

take a stand in healing their pain so that they could see themselves with a whole new set of lenses to achieve their unique purpose in their lives. I decided to look at this from a whole new vantage point. When the opportunity arose, I chose to be courageous and innovative. I was branded on the cover of Las Vegas Woman magazine in the summer 2017 issue. This bold stand helped me lean directly into my energy work and healing facilitation. With that came a full article on changing my career to step joyfully into my dream. Recently, I was cast as an expert thought leader in the film called “Becoming the Keys,” an inspirational movie about overcoming adversity through seven transformational keys. This epic movie stars don Miguel Ruiz of “The Four Agreements,” Dr. Joe Vitale of “The Secret,” and Brian Tracy, author of the bestseller “Psychology of Achievement.” The movie is being distributed on Gaia and is also available on DVD. When you brand yourself, think big! Be bold and do not let anyone else’s ideas keep you small. Be the best version of yourself, no matter what that is. Find your brand by finding what you truly love ...

RESOLUTION

Check-in

The early springtime is one of my favorite times to review my New Year’s resolutions and annual goals. Enough of the year has passed that the “newness” and sense of “I must, or am supposed to, set goals and resolutions” has worn off, and the reality of the year we are now fully in is just beginning to hit. For me, everything sounds good and exciting—and possible—in the final hours of December and the brightness of January’s early days. The future and everything that will or could transpire is perfect and my expectations and visions of myself are nothing short of perfect. In those pre-reality of the year moments, I am perfect. My intentions are perfect. How I achieve my goals will be perfect. How I stay grounded in myself and on track and on purpose, you get the point.

resolutions in the first place. There was a reason why that goal or resolution mattered and belief around our ability to successfully achieve that resolution or goal.

According to studies that have been done, January 12th is the fateful day when most people’s resolve and commitment to their resolutions begins to falter. By the time we get into February, 80 percent of us will have abandoned the resolutions we set. Why, then, do I love the months of February and March? Why are these the months that I am most interested in reviewing those likely failed resolutions and goals? I love them because this is where maximum learning and opportunity are present. This is the moment in time when we have grounded, recent data (I often refer to it as “evidence”) of what worked and, more importantly, of what—and when—we get derailed or off course with the goals and resolutions we so intentionally set.

It is during this time of year that I often dust off one of my favorite self-evaluation exercises. This exercise, one I long ago borrowed from other wise people I know, is called “Stop, Start and Continue,” and the essence of the exercise is this:

Assuming we did not choose our resolutions through a random selection luck-of-the-draw approach, there was some intention, and thinking, around why we set those goals and

2. Knowing what you now know, what do you now see that you will need to START doing or believing if you are going to move forward with and achieve this resolution or goal?

Spring 2019 ◦ lvwomanmagazine.com

The fact that we “fell off the wagon” or “abandoned” our resolution is not what matters. What matters is the story we told and became attached to about why we were no longer able or willing to stay the course. There was something that invited us to fall back into our usual, more comfortable habits and patterns. Something that we did not anticipate or properly prepare for or navigate through or around that kept us more firmly rooted in the “land we have always had and known” and not farther down the path we said we wanted to be on.

For each goal or resolution you set, ask yourself the following three questions: 1. Knowing what you now know (thank you learning and failures from the first 30 to 60 days of this year), what do you now see that you will need to STOP doing or believing if you are going to move forward with and achieve this resolution or goal?

3. Knowing what you now know, what do you now see that you will need to CONTINUE doing or believing if you are going to move forward with and achieve this resolution or goal? The beauty and genius of this process is two-fold. One, you have actual data from the first 30 to 60 days of the year to answer these questions in a grounded, specific, actionable way. Two, once you have answered these three questions, you have a clear, specific, actionable roadmap of what it will take to achieve each of the resolutions and goals you initially set. Now for the most important part. Sometimes, in order to move forward, we have to give ourselves permission to let go of and release things that no longer serve us in our lives. This requires courage and truth telling, and a willingness to set aside the tendency or temptation to make ourselves “wrong” or “less than” because we are letting go of something that no longer matters to us or aligns with who we want to be or with the legacies we want to create in our lives. For me, I don’t care about what other people think my goals should be or must be. And my wish for you is that you allow yourself to be unapologetic, honest and selfish as you review the goals and resolutions you have set. Allow yourself to tell the truth—to yourself, at least—about the goals and priorities that are most important to you. Allow yourself to be honest about your capacity and willingness to take on and achieve the goals and resolutions you previously set. If they still serve you and matter to you then go for them. Stop, Start and Continue your way to success. Know that you will get off course at times, and that is normal. Simply pull out these questions, review the most recent “evidence” and data, and reset. If, however, you have a “should” goal or resolution on your list … if you are staring at a goal or resolution and it is neither important to you nor likely to bring you joy, allow yourself to consider saying “no” to it. Allow yourself to consider “stopping” this goal or resolution in pursuit of the more important goals and opportunities in your life. In this life, there are no guarantees. There is no certainty or guaranteed timeline that we get to live. We have today and hopefully some future days and moments. Allow yourself to check in with yourself and the goals you have set. Review the “evidence” and data to support you in seeing the “truths” that you may not have been able or willing to see. Decide based on today, this moment, what you, and you alone, are really interested in and up for. Stop, Start and Continue your way into your very next moment and into your life’s legacy and definition of success. Tonya Twitchell is a champion of people and possibilities. NETWORKING

Whether you are hitting the networking scene for the first time or are a s e a s o n e d p r o f e s s i o n a l , t h e s e t i p s w i l l h e l p m a ke t h e m o s t o u t o f y o u r t i m e .

1. WHO ARE YOU?

Prepare a “sizzler speech,” a 10-second blurb about who you are and what you do. You start to lose the attention of your listeners after 10 seconds, so keep it brief. If this approach feels too scripted, think of a fun anecdote about why you love your business or industry. Ensure you show genuine passion for what you do; your audience can find it infectious.

2. SMILE.

Studies show that people are more comfortable talking to strangers who display positive body language, such as smiling. When approaching a conversation or new acquaintance, take a deep breath and hide any nervous jitters you may have with a warm smile.

3. LISTEN, DO NOT SELL.

Now is not the time to push your sales pitch onto a stranger. Nothing will stop a conversation faster. Now is the time to be an active listener, ready to learn about who the other person is and what they are working on. Want to make a lasting impression? Find out how you can help the other person. The more interested you are in others, the more interesting you become.

4. PUT THE PHONE DOWN.

One default at networking events is to often keep your eyes glued to the screen waiting for someone to approach you. This habit is not helping anyone, least of all you. If you really want to mix-and-mingle, act like you are ready to meet people before you even walk into a room. This subtle shift in body language projects confidence that will make others more interested in chatting with you.

5. FOLLOW UP!

This simple, yet critical step is often the most neglected. Whether you send a LinkedIn request or a formal email, stretch beyond your comfort zone and nurture those newly formed connections.
